Moshi, moshi! The sushi at Yoshi's is very fresh. The service is friendly, but sometimes slow (this one waitress always forgets to bring our order of extra ginger/wasabi). The atmosphere is cozy. It's much better quality than the sushi spots at the Porter Exchange Mall. I highly recommend the spicy seafood Udon soup! If you live in the area or go to Tufts, then you should definitely check it out. Otherwise, it's about an eight minute walk from the Davis T going up College Ave to Powderhouse Sq.

lovely and unpretentious. doesn't look like your average souped up chic japanese place but you won't be paying extra for fancy fringework, just good honest japanese food. the decor is simple and casual and the restaurant is quite clean. the service is friendly with a touch of shyness. their dinner bento boxes are a great value and are really delicious - i'm a big fan of the rolled omelets that come with these. the sushi is about as fresh as they come. (trust me, i've seen un-fresh sushi and this isn't it) they may serve some kinds of sauce from a bottle but lots of restaurants (like overpriced wagamama's) do that, and anyway that's what you'd do in a typical japanese home for many dishes -- soy sauce after all is a bottled sauce and even the hautest of haute cuisine establishments don't brew their own. basically, if you're ever looking for some well-made, homestyle japanese eats for a good price, this is a satisfyingly good place.

We've done take out from Yoshi's a few times, and it's always really good. The sushi is great, and the bento boxes are great value. Definitely worth checking out.

This sushi was beyond terrible; I literally spit out the first piece of two of the rolls. I ordered the volcano roll, red sox roll, somerville roll, and salmon nigiri. The salmon especially tasted funky. I requested no cucumber in my rolls, which they did not honor. The somerville roll was borderline alright. I'll continue to stick with Taipei Tokyo, which is infinitely tastier and their fish is always flavorful and fresh. I'm sad to have spent $42 - !!!!!!!! - on this terrible meal.

Just got delivery from Yoshi's. Fan of Korean food. What I ordered was beef bulgogi, what I got was an American steak and cheese minus the cheese and with rice substituting for the french roll. And to get kimchi with it, I had to pay $2.50 extra for a "side" of kimchi (which was actually a half pint -- a decent portion). No self-respecting Korean would EVER eat a Korean dish without kimchi and to make you pay to get some kimchi with your bulgogi is mercenary. But it is outright fraudulent to call what they serve as "bulgogi" a "Korean dish." The beef was cheap sliced beef, out of the same box (20-25 lb box of $2/lb beef) that every cheese steak cart uses on the streets, and/or at festivals and events where idiots happily pay $8 for a steak and cheese; the difference being that the steak and cheese will come with cooked green peppers, and be smothered with grilled mushrooms and onions, and a nice French roll. What I got was boiled - I think, as I could not identify ANY evidence of grilling whatsoever -- not on the beef, (there were no mushrooms and few onions), and not on the half-cooked, yet overwhelmingly pervasive green peppers, broccoli, zucchini, and carrots -- NONE OF WHICH BELONG IN BULGOGI... And wtf was with the half a red tomato (fresh)? It was like a generic Chinese stir fry, without the frying, but with a half of a fresh tomato -- wtf? Yet no kimchi, without paying an extra $2.50. The country of Korea has very strict standardized dishes (with regional variations), but none that vary this far. They might get away with calling it a cheap, quick "interpretation" of a Korean but is insulting to both Koreans and potential diners to call this "Korean beef bulgogi". That said, the beef was tender, though flavorless (thank god I sprang for the side of kimchi); most of the vegetables were cooked properly (and I'll probably throw the fresh tomato on a sandwich tomorrow). The correct beef would be sliced steak/rib meat and be marinated with something thicker than water, something that remains on the meat throughout the grilling process (which is why boiling the meat renders it flavorless, the water washes it all off, and there is no carmelization from the grilling process). The correct way to serve bulgogi is to thin slice some steak, an onion, and some mushrooms; marinate with korean sauce, sesame oil, some fresh garlic, and maybe a little ginger - flash grill it and garnish with some sesame seeds. If you want to do it up right, you serve it with rice, kimchi, red lettuce leaves, and some bean paste (and it is optional to include additional side dishes). It is properly eaten by taking an red lettuce leaf and wrapping some bulgogi in the leaf, with some onion, some kimchi, and some bean paste. Wrap it up and eat (and you can either include the rice, or take a bite of rice in between bites of bulgogi - this is the standard practice). I also ordered the unagi (eel) sashimi. That's the warm one, covered with a sweet sauce. The portion was acceptable, but it arrived cold/refrigerated. Of all sushi/shashimi, unagi/eel is supposed to be served warm (it's pretty disgusting cold). Thank god I have a microwave -- but why should I have to warm up a dish that I just paid (and tipped) to be delivered hot? Oh, and the delivery was quick and efficient, and polite as was the sweet young lady on the phone. Final analysis: They have the potential to be a good restaurant, if not a great one, but they need to do more research on the proper techniques to cook, garnish, and serve the dishes on their own menu. They need to send kimchi with every single Korean dish. They need to keep broccoli, fresh tomatoes, and other odd crap out of dishes traditionally without such things (after all, this isn't a "one-size-fits-all stir fry" -- I can order a hundred 'variations" of the same crappy stir fry from any of dozens of crappy restaurants, but if you're going to advertise a REAL dish, then SERVE IT; Korean bulgogi for example. They need to actually grill dishes meant to be grilled. They need to send hot/warm dishes actually hot/warm. I'm in their delivery area and there are few, if any, restaurants that actually can and do deliver decent Korean food.... so I'm hoping that they get their sh*t together.

Gotta love yoshis. Whether you eat there or get delivery, the bento box deal can't be beat. Pretty chilled atmosphere in the restaurant.

My roommate and I order take out from here all the time. They normally come well within the delivery window, if not earlier, and the one time they were late (day after Juno and apparently no one wanted to continue eating all the food they stood in the grocery store line for hours for), they called me back to ensure the food was delivered and the order was correct. Their sushi is always fresh and quality. I love that you can add cucumber or avocado to any roll. My friend ordered the yakitori and said it was okay, definitely not as good as some other places. However, we all agreed that the sushi was lovely.

I have a feeling the sushi quality is directly related to the day you dine, judging by the (surprisingly) glowing reviews of it. Went on a mid-week evening and the rice under the nigiri was flat out inedible. Like a gummy, pasty mush. Grocery store sushi rice is better prepared. and that's me saying it's all gross. That nasty.. Might have been related to what seemed to be a kid in his twenties (aka no way he's a trained sushi chef) making it behind the sushi bar. The fish looked like it'd been cut with a butter knife. My ikea knives cut better. Udon was meh and had really weird add-ins like green peppers and sauteed onions. Didn't satisfy an udon craving for sure. Womp womp. Also worth noting that my friend pointed out that it seems the family running the place is Cantonese, and yet they serve Japanese and Korean cuisine. She thought that was interesting, and maybe related to peppers in the udon...? Should be noted: I'm not a college student, eat great sushi often, live locally, but hey maybe the apps and bentos are a college kid's dream as they are cheap. Just my two cents here. I left here disappointed for what I thought I would be eating is all. Sigh... maybe one more try on a weekend night before I call it a no go for me.

We've never gotten delivery and have only eat at Yoshi's. Seems like most of their business is delivery, as we're usually the only diners whenever we eat there. Their sushi is actually quite good. The menu boasts cheap, affordable, and generous serving-ed sushi and include both classic sushi and more elaborate rolls. The sashimi is surprisingly good quality as well. I'll come in for their kickass lunch deals. BUT, don't order ANYTHING besides sushi from their menu. I don't trust restaurants that try to tackle a hodge podge of cuisines, and Yoshi's is no exceptions. They have various Korean and Chinese dishes as well, but I would only get meals from their sushi bars and not their kitchen. We ordered chicken yakitori and it was so rubbery it squeaked when I chewed it. Seems like the kitchen reheated chicken and dumped goopy soy sauce on it. Questionable at best. Sushi = good Anything else = bad Also, I'm not sure if this place is BYOB, as they have a drinks menu.

Ive dined here a few times, gotten take out religiously , and the ambiance and service have potential .. But when it comes to the food- it's the best around for the price. They crank out high quality sushi and well executed dishes and charge a respectable amount. Their rolls are great, sushi and sashimi are generous quality cuts.. Always fresh. Their delivery is the quickest and most reliable and their employees are always uber friendly and courteous! Definitely the best and most consistent sushi take out ive had out of any metropolitan city ive lived!

I have never reviewed Yoshi's?! Well, here we go: Nestled in Powderhouse Square, Yoshi's is home to some creative sushi, albeit the typical sushi you are probably used to around here. I like their teriyaki bento box which comes with the salad you are used to with the french type dressing, six pieces of sashimi (if you choose that option), miso soup and rice. The servers are nice and I normally get delivery and they are fast. Kiss the fire maki and under control maki are too good options. The prices are reasonable. But I got mention the salmon sashimi... Twice now the salmon has smelled funky fishy to me. I know it's fish but both times it smelled a bit off. So two stars it is.

I had no idea I had such great sushi so close to Teele Square! Yoshi's is not as first-date worthy as Genki Ya or as trendy as Ginger Exchange, but it has great high-quality sushi at competitive prices. The waitstaff was attentive and friendly. The lighting and decor is stark, but the restaurant is very clean and inviting. Davis, Teele and Powderhouse really benefit from this restaurant. So glad I found out about it!

We go to Yoshi's probably more than we should. It's now pretty much a Saturday lunchtime ritual and then no one eats for the rest of the day. We have a problem, we know this but... it's so good. I am a creature of habit so I always order the Chicken Teriyaki Bento while my fiance really likes the Pork Bulgogi Bento. We order the Vegetable Gyoza as an appetizer (fried, not steamed---I don't know where it all ends up on him, but I'm guessing the fat molecules skip him, travel across the table, and I absorb them instead). The chicken is cut into small pieces and the sauce is delicious. The Bento also comes with some Tempura, a Gyoza, Sushi, and some salad with a delicious French dressing. We basically don't eat until Sunday. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I can't operate chopsticks to save my life so the waitress always gives me a fork. (I know, I know.) The bathroom always has Japanese Cherry Blossom soap in it (which I think is cute and I love that scent!). At Christmastime, we received a $5.00 Gift Certificate--whether it was for loyalty or because of the holiday we don't know--which was a really lovely gesture. We ended-up using it when we brought the future in-laws there for lunch during Christmas Week. Yoshi's is a real gem! Easy to walk up to from Davis or Teele Square. We live on Winter Hill so we sometimes walk, sometimes drive and then go for a loooong walk.

Ordered delivery from here. I got the Dinner Bento Box with Sushi and Chicken Bulgogi. My wife got the Bi Bim Bap. Food came fast. The Bi Bim Bap tasted good... but contained TWO TWIST TIES. The sushi and chicken bulgogi tasted pretty good and were twist tie free. Won't be ordering from Yoshi's again. :-(

Definitely a good sushi option for the Davis Square area - not as creative as some other sushi restaurants, but reliable quality and the staff is very nice. Good lunch specials, too!

I'm a fan forever because Yoshi's turns up the volume when the Sox are in the playoffs, they let me sit at the sushi bar for up to two hours watching the game, and make really fun and filling makis. I like thinking of their makis as comfort food- big size, good crunch, flavorful. We're not talking high-end Japanese here... we're talking people who are trained to roll big. Why not have a place like this for sushi? It's just the perfect place for late night cravings and an alternative to regular sports bars. I probably ate about three servings of the "amazing maki" special, which by the way is described as such from their menu: "spicy crunch tuna with tobiko and cucumber deep fried into a golden color and served with scallion and house special sauce." The special sauce is super spicy!!

I ordered here twice. Can't say that it was a good decision. The sushi wasn't particularly fresh, and the delivery took a while. There are better places to get sushi from, even delivery. This review is only for delivery; I have never actually gone and eaten in the restaurant.

Yoshi is a place that I had been meaning to try for a while, so I finally set some time aside and took my girlfriend to the restaurant to see what it was like. The place was cozy, the staff friendly, but the restaurant itself was warm and I found myself sweating while eating lunch... Speaking of lunch, as we ordered, we had a ~5 minute conversation with our waitress asking what the ingredients were in a few dishes, and that it was critically important for them to not serve us anything with shrimp in it since it would trigger a life-threatening allergic reaction in my girlfriend. Having felt we safely vetted the menu, we put our orders in. Once we got out meals, my girlfriend noticed that the dish came with 2 dumplings that were not mentioned in the menu. And, wouldn't you know it, there was shrimp in it... Now, I can appreciate that they gave us some free miso soup to make up for the snafu, but really, we had a pretty detailed conversation with the waitress that shrimp was effectively poison, and it had to be avoided at all costs. It'd be easy to say that this was just a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing, but when we were ordering the waitress already consulted with the person preparing the meal asking if another dish had sushi in it. (Its worth mentioning that Yoshi's was basically empty at the time...) So, if you have any food allergies at all, steer clear. If not, its a pretty average experience otherwise.

Yoshi's definitely one of my top choices whenever I am near Tufts campus. I always go for their three maki roll lunch special (4/5) which comes with a bowl of miso soup (3/5). Good food quality (4/5), very reasonably priced lunch especial ($ in a $$ sushi joint). I must add that the waitress is always super friendly and attentive (5/5). Overall, I think a 4/5 rating is a fair one when it comes to my personal experience.

The food gets a solid 3 stars, but their menu blatantly lies. I've ordered delivery from them multiple times and gotten screwed out of things supposed to be included in the Vegetable Tempura lunch bento. The menu states "All served with miso soup, salad, rice, shumai, gyoza, vegetable tempura and 3 pieces of California roll.", yet they leave out the shumai and gyoza. Their explanation is that gyoza and shumai are not vegetarian and thus are not included. Okay, maybe that is legit if you include that on the menu. Maybe. But now they've left out the salad, shumai, gyoza, tempura, and california roll when I ordered the bi bim bap lunch box. Unacceptable. EDIT: They did bring the other stuff after much complaining over the phone.

Well. What can I say. Their food tastes pretty bad. Can't recommend to anyone who is serious about what they eat.

Why was it so hot in here? For a place that serves sushi which is of course raw fish that isn't supposed to be cooked, we were all a little confused about why it was so warm in here at lunch...I know it is winter out sort of now, but that has got to lead to a mighty high heat bill! But onto the real reason we came here--the food. Their lunch specials are quite affordable and with slim pickings around the Tufts campus for lunch, this is a great option. Most lunch specials are $7-9 including bento boxes which one of us got and it was plenty big for lunch if you ask me and two sushi roll specials including miso of course. The miso was pretty tasty and my sushi rolls were good too--got the salmon avocado and the spicy tuna maki--but was it the best sushi in the world? No, definitely not. But it wasn't bad either. And for $8.50 for two rolls and a miso? That is a steal for any sushi place if you ask me. Plus they have pretty fast water service here too, which is another bonus in my book. And it is fast overall service too, meaning if you just need a quick lunch break from the hustle and bustle of school and work, Yoshi's will be there to take care of you.

I'd give this place 3.5 for food quality, but the service was top notch, with our server constantly coming back to check in on us and anticipating what we'd need before asking her...she even overheard it was my husband's birthday and brought out a slice of cake! As for the meals, we had the dinner boxes, which is a huge quantity of food for about $16! You can choose your sushi option (e.g., sashimi, maki, handroll, etc), and then a hot option (e.g., bulgogi)...it also comes with 3 tempura pieces, salad, and miso soup! The food was not too shabby, though not quite authentic, but I still thought it tasted fine, however my husband wasnt the biggest fan. Others in our party also raved about the spicy bulgogi as one of their long-time top fave options.

We ordered twice there. First time they couldn't write down my address. I had to spell it at least 6 times, then they still wrote it down wrong. It took about 55 min to be delivered. Second time, thinking they now have my address , we wait over 1hour (!!) to get out food delivered.

As an Asian, I feel like the reviews thus far are from a uniquely American perspective, and perhaps don't really consider what truly good Sushi/Asian food in general, tastes like. While the food here is acceptable, there are still many places that are better in terms of quality and price. While the sushi here is okay, most of the hot dishes- especially the korean stuff and the noodle dishes- are sub par compared to what one can make on their own, or get elsewhere. The prices are not great here or anything. I think a lot of people especially at tufts are enamored by the fact that it's the closest sushi joint to campus, but the reality is that it just isn't that good. Service however was decent, Consider Snappy Sushi or Taipei Tokyo, both located in Davis Square

  • David M.

Wow.. I've been coming here for 5 years, how have I not reviewed it. The best recommendation I've had for this place was from a woman who was 8 months pregnant, and could not wait to go back to Yoshi's once she had her kid. She was excited about having her first child and all.. but you know, It's sushi! This is a great little sushi bar with ample table seating. The fish, when its good is amazing, but occasionally the tuna or salmon can be a bit bland, but that's rare. The rolls are done to perfection. While the prices are a tad high, the combo plates are really filling. To clinch there five star rating, the last time I was there (at 4pm on a saturday to get take out) they threw in a free california roll.

I order sushi frequently from my "go-to" delivery place but occasionally I get bold and try somewhere new. The delivery showed up on time but I didn't get my sushi fix from this experience. It was kind of dry and bland. The sushi didn't have any of the delicate texture or taste good sushi should have. It's too bad because they have a nice location near Powder House. They might do well because they're so close to tufts but really, there are other sushi options around that are infinitely better.

Good sushi! We got it delivered, so I can't comment on the restaurant itself. As a disclaimer, we're a vegetarian and a vegan, so no raw fish or meat for us. We had the veggie options (sweet potato roll in particular was divine) and the miso soup - all were very good! Each piece of sushi was surprisingly big, too. Delivery came on time and order was accurate. We did the lunch special for 3 rolls and miso soup which was like 11 bucks, then ordered two additional rolls (to feed two adults) and were very satisfied!

I love Yoshi's for takeout. The food is fast and fresh. I wasn't particularly impressed by my in restaurant experience. Since when does a restaurant include the tip into the total for 1 person? (and when my bill was only $14 they added another $4 for the tip--I never tip 28% anywhere!) The food was as good as my takeout. However, I didn't like the fact that I swear I saw green tea ice cream on the menu (aside from the mochi) and then they told me they didn't carry it. I also wish they would get rid of their carpeting. It seemed to have a nasty mildewy smell to it. Anyway, Yoshi will still be my go to sushi takeout spot. I may stick to Snappy or Yoki for my eat -in dining experiences.

Ive only gotten delivery from Yoshi's, so I can't comment on the restaurant, but I do love their sushi and keep repeat ordering. I think there are 4 types of Sushi restaurant, nasty, acceptable, delicious, and WOW!. This place is in the delicious category, the only places I have eaten at that were in the WOW category have staff buyers in Japan who pick and ship fish daily and the average cost is about $70 a person. This place is very reasonably priced for the delicious category, and the sushi is soooo good.

  • Daniel H.

Everything they make is pretty damn tasty. I am giving it 3-3.5 stars simply because the dinner menu is a bit over priced and there's just better sushi and japanese food around if that is what you are looking for. 5 STARS for LUNCH MENU. Absolutely great deals at lunch. If you are super hungry I'd stay away from the sushi and get something like spicy chicken bulgogi. It's about three times the amount of food and the quality is not compromised at all. However, the sushi is still reasonably priced. Yoshi's is BYOB. Back in the day (5 years ago or so) you could just bring your booze to the table with you. Now they take it and serve it to you. This is sometimes extremely slow, especially when it is busy at night. I went with a group of friends and we were all sailors so, suffice it to say that they didn't quite understand our consumption patterns. Water under the bridge, and the fact remains, you can bring your own booze. Where else in Medford or Somerville can you do that? Please, tell me if you know... I'd say they are typically understaffed so don't go if you are in a rush...but the quality, again, is never compromised.

I happen to walk by this place every time I head into work. And, of course, every time I walk home from work as well. Go figure. After walking by this place for a good solid 6 months, with their "All you can eat Sushi Tuesday" banner, I decided to give it a try one night. My friend and I had just gotten back from Providence, and much like a traveler in the desert, we staggered into the first watering hole we could find. Much to our dismay we found out right away they did not serve alcohol. Right there, takes a star away in my eyes. While you could bring your own, some times you just don't want to have to plan that far in advance to get your drink on with some cheap sushi. There was something, aside from no alcohol, that just rubbed us the wrong way. One of those rubs that leads you completely unsatisfied and eating a cheese sandwich before bed. The sushi itself wasn't much to write home about. It was moderately priced but nothing stood out about it. The new california roll tasted just like a new california roll. The sweet potato roll was definitely too hard(I prefer it to be mushy!), and my friend burnt her tongue on the shumai. Something, 4 months later, she hasn't quite gotten over. She holds a grudge.. Before we wrote this place off completely, we gave it another go while having to use the laundromat next door. Again, same situation. Food wasn't anything great, and out of the 3 tables besides our own that had people seated at them, 2 of them were employees eating. We finally decided what it is about this place that had us rubbed all sorts of the wrong way. The atmosphere. Some thing in the air doesn't feel overly welcoming. It could just be the music they play. Celine Dion, Mariah Carey.. Doesn't aid in the digestion. at all.

I got delivery sashimi and miso last night, was at my house well before the promised time and absolutely YUM! 4 stars because they forgot a miso (dinner came with one, and we split the meal, so ordered 1 extra) but they are getting this review because I called the delivery driver 5 min after he left to tell him I wanted a refund or another miso, and within 15 minutes he came back with another piping hot miso and a profuse apology. Hey, shit happens but I was really impressed that he came back. I'm sure it would have been much easier to refund me. And the miso was soooo good!

Just went here for the first time even though I've lived around the corner for 3 years. Never knew it was here but so happy I do now. Had such a good time when I was there, rolls were crazy delicious and super inexpensive for how good they were. Staff was friendly and wicked attentive and even gave us free dessert (Probably because we gorged on 6 rolls.) Definitely recommending it to everyone and can't wait to go again, so happy there's such a good place so closeby!

I called up Rosalina, Bowser and Birdo and told them to meet me at Yoshi's. I had never been there before and wanted to check it out. I hopped on my dolphin dasher and was there in minutes. I saw Bowser's off-roader outside so I knew I was at the right place. The place is small and cute. They offer sushi as well as cooked Japanese and Korean dishes. The steamed gyoza were delicious and disappeared very quickly. The veggie tempura was good too. The pork katsu was well prepared and not over-fried into oblivion. The "chicken bulgoki" which was really a chicken bokum (a stir fry, not grilled) was tasty but could use some veggies to mix it up a little. Service was decent and friendly and the prices were reasonable.

Yoshi's used to be great, but has gone downhill recently. It all started when they substituted tuna with imitation crab in one set of rolls without asking. It was a to-go order, but they did have my phone number! The next time I was very specific that they shouldn't replace without asking, so I got what I ordered. But the eel was a bit crunchy and when I looked closer, I could see visible bones. I'm not experienced at sushi, but it didn't seem right to me. Then recently my roommate (ever hopeful even in the face of adversity) ordered brown rice sushi, only to find that the brown rice was so undercooked it was basically inedible. It's too bad :-(

3.5 stars. Yoshi's is SO not bad. That's not a knock, because I think this place is fantastic and I keep going back. Sure, there are better sushi options in the Boston area, but Yoshi's is very solid, quality food. I have found everything to be fresh and tasty, the service to be prompt and attentive, and you simply cannot beat the price. Really, you can go here and do a serious sushi pig-out and not break the bank. I wouldn't put it in my top sushi places, but I would put it in my very top places for a casual, good meal, at a very reasonable price.

Got food there from Foodler delivery. Food came relatively quick and comparable to many other sushi joints. One thing of note is that both my husband and I got sick after eating their food, otherwise I would have given them at least 3 stars

This is my go-to spot for sushi takeout. Delivery is always pretty quick and my husband and I are always happy with our sushi. We've tried other places for takeout, Taipei Tokyo and Blue Fuji, and we still prefer Yoshi for speed and quality. They're dinner combos tend to be good options too - we love getting the Sushi Regular or Deluxe, and find that most times we get a good selection. Occasionally, we get stuck with a shrimp or egg, but usually it's fish. Overall, a good experience and we'll keep on coming back (or having them come back to us).

I decided to update to a 4. I still stand by my prior review. The distribution and configuration of ingredients totally depend on the sushi chef you have, but, it's never terrible, just sometimes better put together than others. However, I went back last night and decided this review needed an update. Why? Because after eating at like every other sushi place in the area, this one is actually the cheapest and when it comes to fish quality, I've never had bad fish here, which I can't say for other places...they even have raw scallop that is cheap and not deadly! Though, I would stay away from deep fried things, their oil doesn't always taste the freshest. Also, I noticed on the way out last night that they offer 10% off with a Tufts ID. I've been here probably 5 - 10 times and never noticed that. I'm a little annoyed with myself for all the money I could have saved. (Especially off of the $62 bill we already paid last night). Grrrr. So, just a heads up, if you have a Tufts ID, show it.

Yoshi's is like the booty call of Japanese restaurants. They aren't the best, but they are convenient, and they are a fine solution when I'm feeling lazy. The lunch specials are a good deal, and perfectly serviceable. If they are on your way somewhere else, don't be afraid to stop.

Oh Yoshi, how I love thee. Let me count the makis... I've reviewed a handful of sushi bars, but this place is a hidden Gem of sushi in Davis square. The quality of fish is always top notch, and cheap! I've eaten myself stupid with sushi for about $20 bucks here, which is a damn rare feat! Also, Tuesday from 5-9 is ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI for $26 or so. Let me repeat this for the people not paying attention... ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI. An added plus: since as long as this place has been around, they've been BYOB. At first I thought this was just "meh" but it actually turns out cheap and fantastic if you're with groups! You can hike over from Downtown Wine and Spirits and keep yourself and entourage of sushi craving fanatics "well spirited" without the ridiculous prices of the bars down the street. The place itself is quaint and has an amazing and attentive staff. I've never had to wait to be seated, and I've always been served within 10-15 minutes or so. I'd confidently put this place up against any sushi place in the area for quality, price, convenience, and service. Go-YoSH!

Table next to me orders teriyaki chicken and then they bring it out on a sizzling hot plate that's sizzling vigorously with the right amount of smoke - it looks exciting and delicious. I order the same thing and they bring it out on a dead plate, no sizzle, no smoke; very disappointing and it looks like it was left out to dry - what's worst is that is how it tasted - dry and bland.

ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI. Need I say more? I live about three steps from Yoshi's, and have seen their banner advertising this special (tuesdays from 5-9 only) 18,000 times. Last night I was starving and up to the task. All you can eat sushi can be questionable, and as my boyfriend and I walked into the totally empty restaurant, I was weary. My doubts were diminished after eating my first piece of maki. This stuff is not just decent, it's really GOOD! I mean, it's not one of the fancy-schmancy upscale sushi places, but I definitely enjoyed it. I was worried we'd only have simple (boring) rolls to choose from, but there was a good variety, including a spider roll (fried soft shell crab). They also include a selection of appetizers in the $27.95 price. The only catch is, you have to finish what you order, and there's no take out leftovers. So if you don't clean your plate (or come close to it) you have to pay a $10 penalty. I definitely over ordered -- my eyes are always bigger than my stomach. I took that penalty as a challenge, and stuffed myself with the remaining maki on my plate (those damn sweet potato rolls are HUGE and so filling!). Next time, I'll order one less maki. But go here. It's absolutely a great value.

"Meh." That was my first impression of Yoshi's. And my second. And my third. There's nothing bad to report, but nothing good either. The menu is small and mediocre, but the food is good enough. Why did I go three times, you ask? My friend is a big fan, and when she takes me out for sushi, I don't complain and where we go. Then I found out, Yoshi's delivers. Delivery sushi - plus one star for Yoshi's! That lasted for about six months, and then about a month ago Yoshi's took a turn for the worst. I don't know what changed, but all of a sudden the quality of the fish they served took a nose dive. My last order of maguro was so pale it was almost white (this is regular maguro, not shiro maguro). Maybe it has something to do with the area's supplier - I've noticed problems with the quality of the fish at several other local sushi restaurants. Whatever the reason, I'm taking that star for delivery back. Yoshi's remains "meh."

So I'm at home and drinking hot tea to try and get the Yoshi's aftertaste out of mouth. I wish I would have ordered more Korean dishes. Though the sushi kind of sucked, our scallion pancake was on the decent end of good. I'm just glad we didn't order too many raw fish items because even the inari tasted like it was beyond shelf life. So... for the curious who have walked by Yoshi's a hundred times --- you should just keep on walking. There is a reason the joint is more or less empty. plus it isnt even cheap.

My boyfriend loves this place (especially the Red Sox maki) but I have mixed feelings. Sometimes I think the sushi hits the spot, and sometimes I think there's better sushi elsewhere (Fugakyuuuu) but for the prices, definitely a steal. I try to stick to the basic sushi rolls here, as all the specials are smothered in Eel and the thought makes me gag. Related: When I first started going here, it was BYOB, and boy, was that a draw. Then, one day, the waitress said they were no longer BYOB (hello Somerville police). Suddenly the "special" appeal of Yoshi's had lessened just so, and I didn't go back for awhile. Went here again last week and was reminded that it is pretty decent for a cheap sushi restaurant, and THEN saw that the boys next to us had whipped out a six-pack and the waitress got them some glasses. So... if in fact Yoshi's is once again BYOB, definitely go here with a bottle of wine on a Summer night, but if your heart is hardened to OK sushi and you can only eat the very best, then... maybe not.

Just another reason to stay close to my old college stompin' ground. I've never had a bad experience at Yoshi's, and if I have to order the Super Dragon Maki every time I eat here, I'll be fine with that. I just noticed they have All You Can Eat Sushi on Tuesdays, so looks like I might get that wish. If you go to Tufts, this place is a 5-minute walk from campus, toward Davis. Go educate yourself in something that really matters - GODO sushi!

I expected more of this place. It is very close to my house, so I gave it a try. I was disappointed. First, the online menu doesn't have the makki on it. When I ordered takeout, i asked what the makki prices were. The person on the phone did not seem to understand what I was asking, even though I kept saying that the makki prices were not on the online menu. Finally, I asked if they were the same as the sushi prices, and she said they were. Predictably, they were not. More importantly, the food was disappointing. The cut of tuna used to make my makki included lots of inedible white connective tissue. I had to keep pulling the INEDIBLE white stuff out of my mouth. Fortunately, I was home and not seated in the restaurant. The spicy tuna and spicy salmon was just ok. And my seaweed salad was just terrible. I couldn't finish it. If you don't have a car and you live nearby, it is acceptable. If you have a car or bike, I highly recommend Sei bar in Medford. Prices are comparable and it's worth the extra trek.

I wish I could write a positive review about this restaurant, but I can't. I visited it for the first (and last) time this past Saturday, and the service was so terrible that I will never go there again. I went there because I was on my way to see theater at Tufts. I arrived at Yoshi's shortly before 7pm; having read the menu posted outside, I thought I'd have sufficient time to get a bowl of nabeyaki udon, and go on my way to the theater. It was 6:55 when I sat down in the restaurant. I waited a good 10 minutes to be given a menu, and actually had to ask twice for water, which I consider pretty basic. (I know that single females have a reputation for being cheap on tips, but I ALWAYS tip waiters/waitresses, no matter how bad the service.) I placed my order for nabeyake udon, and waited. And waited. And waited. At about 7:20 pm, one of the staffers came to my table with a bowl of miso soup; it wasn't what I ordered, but at least somebody acknowledged that I was sitting there, waiting for the food I ordered. At 7:35, I decided that I could make my choice: wait until the kitchen, or the wait staff, brought my what I had ordered nearly half an hour ago, or I could see the theater performance that was my reason for being in Powderhouse Square that evening. (A note here; I don't have a car, so I'd have no place to put what I ordered if it were packaged up as a to-go order.) I went to the cashier and explained that 1) I had theater tickets, and couldn't wait any longer and 2) I could not bring food into the theater. The person who was cashiering was civil enough, and tried to write off the bill, but I insisted on paying for the miso soup that had been brought to my table, which I did.(No tip for the waitress, though.) I don't know if the problem is in the kitchen, that they are unable to produce simple food, or with the wait staff, but when I enter a restaurant, have to ask twice for water, and can't get the food I ordered after a half hour wait, that restaurant hasn't just lost a sale, they've lost a customer. Permanently.

Went here for Sashimi on my lunch break the other day. The place wasn't crowded so we sat right away. I had: Tuna, White Tuna, Salmon and Yellow tail. I thought the fish was great and really fresh. There was only 1 waitress : 4 tables so it took a while to get our check. I feel like restaurants should have more staff on hand to staff working lunches-people need to get back to work, son. So other than the service issue, I think this is a pretty standard sushi place.

I could eat sushi for every meal of every day, so yes, I consider myself a bit of a sushi snob. With good reason. Yoshi's is great because it's BYOB, they have very good and fresh sushi/sashimi, and it's inexpensive. They don't charge a corking fee and provide wine/beer glasses. I've been there several times now with my boyfriend and friends and we've all loved it. I especially love the Fashion roll, spicy tuna, salmon and maguro sashimi. Mmmmm! The only other comparable sushi place I've found in the area is Hana Sushi in N. Cambridge. The only reason for 4 stars is the lack of ambiance. Otherwise, the sushi and service are great!!!

Three stars for the food, plus one for the fact that they deliver to my house!! SUSHI delivered to my house!! The first time I ordered from Yoshi's, I was totally impressed by the quality of the fish in my chirashi dinner. I thought it was just totally delicious, and fairly priced. However, the second, third, and fourth times I ordered from Yoshi's were all the same: not quite the quality of fish I would hope for, in a way that almost made me a little nervous. Still, a great asset to the neighborhood! DELIVERY SUSHI, MAN!

Sushi is lacking in Somerville. Taipei Tokyo is tremendiously overpriced, and Shino Express has been "opening soon" for about six months. So that leaves Yoshi's. It's a good thing Yoshi's makes a good sushi roll. I have eaten there several times, and I have had delivery from there. I ADORE the BYOB. I mean, why not? With all the overpriced alcohol in restaurants lately, I am surprised they don't use this as a huge selling point! The thing I like is that you pay for what you get. I don't necessarily mean that about the food itself, but the ambience is simple and neat. It doesn't have the allure of Osushi in Back Bay, but if you're looking for a bite to eat with a friend, you can't go wrong here.

BYOB, and for that alone, I love this place. There just are not enough BYOB's around here. They'll even open your bottle and pour your drinks for you. The atmosphere is also cute, so grab a bottle and bring your honey here for a date! For food, I recommend trying the lunch/ dinner box, where you can mix and match items (like tempura, sushi, tofu/ chicken teriyaki, salad, etc) for around $16. It's a ton of food and will fill you up. I'll warn you though-- I didn't think the fish was fresh at all. My first visit, I went all veggie and had a wonderful experience. On my next visit, I ordered some of the sashimi, and regretted it. I ended up leaving a couple pieces of fish on my plate, just to be on the safe side. Overall though, despite the strange fish incident, I've still really enjoyed my meals here, and find it a nice place to just chill with a friend over some wine or some beers. Perhaps it's that I'm always drinking when I'm here that I like it so much? Whatevs, I'll be back.

Its really hard to find a place that delivers sushi, which is one of the reasons that I really like Yoshi's. The sushi is of good quality, not as good as Taipei Tokyo, but cheaper and theres more of it, leading to a pretty good value. The atmosphere of the place is ho-hum, there are some attempts at decoration but the place looks pretty plain. The sushi bar itself looks out of place. Since Im a Tufts student, its location is great! A 5 min walk from SciTech and I am at the front door. Beats a 10-15 min walk down to Taipei (esp. in the wintertime), plus I probably wont get yelled at by that crazy guy that hangs out by the bus stop. Overall, I would greatly recommend this place if you dont wanna spend a lot and still get a decent amount of sushi.

I ordered sushi takeout from here once. It took about 10 minutes longer than they said it would and once I got it home to eat it, I was less than impressed. The fish had an off texture and some of the rolls fell apart. I won't be eating sushi from here again when there are much better options in the area.

I have never dined at Yoshi, but I do order takeout quite often. I'd rather eat my sushi at home, naked, in bed. Yoshi's sushi is always pretty fresh. They have a really simple menu but it works. Try the sashimi apppetizer. Also try the spicy seafood soup. The shrimp tempora rolls and spicy udon noodle soup entree are also yummilicious. Also, they are now BYOB and the prices can't be beat. Ain't nothin wrong w/ dat!

Every experience I've had at Yoshi's has been a wonderful one. I don't know much about fine sushi, but I do know about filling my belly with yummies. I think I've always ordered the boxed meal and I've always left pleasantly stuffed. Yoshi's tempura isn't too greazy, and the staff is very low-pressure and accommodating. That's what hits the high note with me. I've brought my mom here and let her make an ass out of herself with chopsticks, but she enjoyed the food none-the-less. She even reviewed the sushi as "better than the cafeteria at work!" So there you have it. My only complaint is that Yoshi's can be a little drafty in the winter, so bundle up and stay bundled.

A good local spot for fresh sushi. The service was friendly, though bashful. Rolls aren't crammed tight so you can't fit them in your mouth, but aren't skimped on either. The interior is actually cozier than I'd expect, but largely unremarkable. The restaurant is always pleasantly full on nights and weekends. Good for take-out too.

It's your neighborhood sushi place that you'll drive to even if you don't live in the neighborhood. Their sushi is fresh, and the owners are very sweet people. It's perfect for parties of 2 or 4, and makes for a nice quiet meal (unless Tufts is in session--then you get to hear college kids complaining about their workload). They pay exceptional attention to every sushi roll they make. And it tastes better that way.

You can't beat Yoshi's for a great deal on good sushi in Somerville. First of all, Yoshi's is BYOB (and there's no corking fee), and their sushi is delicious. Their maki rolls are very reasonably priced, and their fancy rolls, like the Spider Roll and Rainbow Roll are definitely worth the couple of extra bucks you'll send. My boyfriend and I go often, and usually get an appetizer and six rolls (and bring 1-2 bottles of wine) and the check usually comes to just over $40. The wait staff is generally pleasant and is pretty good about refilling water glasses and taking your order when they see that you're ready. And they also don't kick you out as soon as you're done eating, which is nice when you've still got another bottle of wine to kill. All in all, one of my favorite sushi places around. And the bonus: if you order enough sushi, your order comes on one of those fun boats, which never fails to bring a smile to our faces.

I cheated on Montana Sushi* and now I feel kind of dirty. It's not that Yoshi's isn't good. It's just that Montana's is better... This review is for delivery only. Sometimes I think I'm going to Montana's too much, so I'll pick another cuisine or try to head someplace different. Yoshi's delivery is pretty solid and the price is right. They listen for my order and I never have to repeat myself. They deliver in a reasonable amount of time (under a half hour when they say 40 minutes) and the food comes piping hot if need be (oohheee souuupp).. but.. their dinner boxes make me long for Montana. The dinner box I had recently, consisted of bulgogi and sashimi. Dinner boxes generally come with salad, miso soup, and a scallion pancake-esque mabobber all for $15.95. It was good, but it wasn't great. Montana bulgogi is better. I've had the Alligator and the Alaska maki and found the sushi to be of good quality.. but Montana.. 3.5 stars rounded to 4.. because delivery sushi is just amazing sometimes. *I don't like advertising for other restaurants within a review.. hence the fake name. lol ==================================================== Note: Lunch Hours: Monday-Saturday 11:30 AM-2:30 PM Dinner Hours: Monday-Thursday 5:00-10:00 PM Friday-Saturday 5:00-10:30 PM Sunday 4:30-10:00 PM Delivery to Somerville, Medford, North Cambridge. $20 minimum.

I had walked by Yoshi's many times and decided to try them because I really hoped there would be a decent little sushi place right by where I lived. Pretty disappointed. I ordered the chirashi which came with miso soup, tofu triangles, shumai and gyoza. Gyoza lacked flavor, the shumai were decent but most definitely premade and thawed, tofu triangles fell apart when you tried to eat them (have they ever heard of corn starch?), the miso soup was bland, and worst of all my entree, the chirashi. The fish itself didn't look so good to start with and was cut rather bizzarely. And the sushi chef had the bright (or not so bright) idea of taking slices of lemon and lining them up on top of the fish, so every single slice of sashimi tasted like -- you guessed it -- lemony fish. Won't be ordering from them again.

Yoshi was amazing - not only are they BYOB, but they have delicious sushi, too! The Super Dragon Roll was great, and their other basic rolls were pretty tasty, too. I have a feeling I'm going to find myself making the walk to Yoshi with a bottle or two of vino a few more times this summer.

There are actually some decent non-sushi items on the menu, but my experience of Yoshi's is primarily as a sushi joint. When I first moved to the neighborhood, Yoshi's felt like the only game in town, and I'd go whenever I had a craving for sushi. Even at the time, I felt like I was getting cheap, unexceptional sushi and paying a few dollars more than I would have liked. The fish often felt a little colder than it should, and never tasted particularly fresh. Also: the servers often acted irritated to have us there, especially if we weren't ordering drinks or didn't order a certain amount per person. I am typically sympathetic with waiters who feel this way, and I always try to order an appropriate amount. But this attitude feels a little disingenuous coming from a sushi joint in Powderhouse Square where it's nearly impossible to spend less than $15/person. I always get the impression that Yoshi's is trying hard to be a little bit nicer, a little bit more formal than they are...an aspiration that, sadly, isn't reflected in the food. Now that Snappy Sushi has moved into Davis Square, you can get better sushi and good service for roughly the same price. So if you're a first year at Tufts who isn't ready to venture half a mile beyond campus, Yoshi's is probably the place for you...but then again, the difference between Yoshi's and the prepackaged sushi they sell in the campus center isn't so great as to justify a trip down the hill.

I've never actually eaten in, but I've gotten delivery twice. More sushi places need to start delivering, by the bye. It's amazing that I can get a craving for sushi and then BAM, it's there. It took longer than they told me, so by the time the guy came last night with my sushi, my stomach was practically eating itself. I ordered three maki rolls: spicy tuna with cucumber, salmon with avocado, and a lobster roll. The first two were pretty standard, but they tasted fresh. The lobster roll was a bit of a letdown, though...the meat was kind of tough and I just wasn't too crazy about the flavor. I'll def order from here again, but I'll try something else next time.

I've eaten here twice now and I find the food is alright. The Bulgogi was a bit too salty but not so much that I would complain. The sushi was good. I am planning to try the udon when I go next. The reason I like this place though is because it's close by, decent food, and nice staff and service.

I ADORE this place! It's a must-do for when I come to MA. the service is excellent, the sushi is really fresh and they have a large assortment. My favorite is the lobster roll though. and pretty much the best part is they are BYOB, so you save a buttload on drinks!

BYOB makes boozy su sad. this is why i should line my sweater with grey goose nips or strap a flask to my thigh- for the times when i don't check yelp.com beforehand, sit down in a restaurant, order a plate full of sushi, and try not to let slip the fact that i'm a crestfallen alcoholic when the waitress breaks the bad news. blast! yoshi proved fresh, tasty, simple, and affordable. the dining room is plain, but cozy. the staff was quick and friendly. i was satisfied, but not enchanted. if i'm in the area and i happen to have a jug of hooch on hand, i'll stop in again. loved the asparagus sushi. :) plenty of veggie options.

After a long week at work, I found myself craving sushi; however, my husband does not like it. I searched Yelp and found Yoshi's, which also has good options for the non-sushi eaters. I got the dinner bento box. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars - the salad was as expected. I got my box with the shrimp tempura - the tempura was spot-on! I liked that the shrimp were a manageable size - not those space alien - 7inchers. There was also some weird potato and onion thing - which tasted pretty much just like potato and onion, so I didn't waste any more than a bite on that. To complete the box, I got the Nagiri. There's no way around it - the fish was second rate. 2 pieces of tuna, 1 piece salmon of pretty salmon, 1 piece of ugly salmon, and 1 piece mystery fish with the skin still on. I could not for the life of my identify the mystery fish! All I can say is that he tasted like ocean. My husband had a Korean dish of chicken in chili paste. Again, it was a little pedestrian. When I go out to eat, I expect chicken to be prepared in a professional manner, not just generic bulk cooked chicken dunked in a sauce to differentiate it from other menu items. That being said, they did have plenty of options for non-fish eaters, which is a huge plus with my crowd. We both agreed the miso soup was very good, and the waitress was very polite. All in all, I'm not sure if I'll go back - if I do, I'll need to go with another sushi eater to try some of there more exciting menu options.

Been here twice now - once for dinner with a bachelorette party group and once for dinner with a couple friends. Both times, I left very happy. The sushi is delicious, fresh and they have a large variety, including a lot of cooked sushi for those who are not fans of raw. They also have other entrees for those who do not like sushi at all (teriyaki dishes, noodles, etc.). The space is low-key and always filled with local students. The best part - it's BYOB! No corking or pouring fees, no 400% markup on an $8 bottle of so-so wine. It's amazing how much cheaper the check is without the booze on it. The last time I went, they brought us mochi ice cream AND fortune cookies with the check. BONUS. First time I ever had mochi and I was blown away. The service is a little slow, but chill. Just sit back, relax and enjoy just hanging out with your friends. Everything else at this place makes up for it in spades.

Definitely NOT the best is Davis. Sushi is okay but everything else is mediocre. Not impressed. Also the service took FOREVERRRRRR! We waited about an hour before anything came out. One nice thing is I ordered a bubble tea and they ran out but the waitress gave me a $5 gift certificate. That was only after our food took forever to come out though... not very impressed.

We were in it to win it for the Korean- so we didn't mess with the sushi. The garden salad was odd. I love my standard Japanese resto salad with ginger dressing. This one was all romaine, broccoli and red peppers- with dressing on the side. Odd. We got miso soups that we didn't order. I have a feeling that the waitress was understanding every other word we said. Got the pan fried tofu, bulgogi and kimchee. All were good. The bulgogi was perhaps a scooch too sweet for me and needed the kimchee. The price was right and the setting fine enough. Both my dining partner and I had to have about 15 tums each throughout the night. Not blaming Yoshi, just sayin.

I'm a fan of their nebayaki udon. Hot and warming on a winter day. Perfectly brothy, chickeny, and eggy. Yum yum yum. Their sushi's okay - of all the ones we tried - we only liked their Philly rolls (cream cheese, green onions, smoked salmon).

I've gotten takeout and sat in for dinner. Nice fresh sushi, good service, clean and pleasant atmosphere. I'm pretty predictable when it comes to sushi, give me edamame, shumai and a dragon roll and I'm a happy girl. Split a couple more rolls with my BFF Melissa T. and was perfectly satisfied.

WHAT HAPPENED TO YOSHI'S?? New owners? New management? They closed for a month in the summer and re-opened with mediocre sushi. It's all different now too - the spicy makis are full of cream, the fried tofu isn't the same, tekka don isnt' the same - even the menu style is different. I'm heartbroken :(

This is the sushi place I frequent most. Again coming from Cali, I think this place is just ok, but good enough for around here. The selection is boring. fresh enough, but simple. The reason I give it four is because it is consistently good (and BYOB). The edamame is always warm and salted just perfectly, The fried gyoza is perfectly fried on the bottom. The unagi has just enough sauce on it and the teriyaki chicken isn't fatty. The sushi rolls are on the back of the sushi menu and I don't have a favorite. BUT the Korean bowl option here gives this place an extra star Ok Dol Bi Bim Bab is very good, and I have had korean food in other cities and this is worth trying if you have never had it. Overall, I come here when I want sushi.

I LOVE Yoshi's! While the decor leave something to be desired, the sushi as well as the BYOB is incredible. I have brought everyone i know and love to this restaurant, and frequent it weekly. The staff is always super friendly, the food is incredible, and they have a specials list that will get you to try new combinations of sushi you might have otherwise looked over. I have never tired their Koren inspired menu, but i hear great things, and it is also a great affordable option for the people you might bring with you that have a fear of sushi. Highly Recommended. Try the Black Dragon!

I went here with my roommate to have some cheapy sushi and drink our BYOB wine!!! The meal totaled about $30 for the both of us with tip. But the best part was, we were able to bring our own wine with us, and they didn't charge a corking fee! The sushi was tasty; the portions were good. We enjoyed a roll that was made with cucumber opposed to seaweed - absolutely amazing. This is a great spot for a casual night out and good, not overly expensive sushi...

Pretty decent sushi, at a reasonable price. Well, for sushi that is. It's not the best, and the quality of the fish isn't the best, but you're not paying those prices either. The staff are mostly nice, and friendly. The brevity of this review is a statement in itself. Not thrilling, but nice. They deliver too, although I don't know if they deliver to where I live yet. If they do, that'll earn another star.

One of my favorite sushi places in Boston: unpretentious, super friendly, clean, fresh and well priced. As undergrads, my best friend and I had a weekly lunch date at Yoshi's. $10 for a great meal definitely beat $7 for something crappy and unhealthy on campus. The owners are super nice and are a big part of the reason why I still drive out here. One year, I stopped by on my birthday for a quick bite before heading to the theater and he made me a sushi cake topped with a candle. Seriously, what more can I ask for.

3rd time calling to get delivery and no answer about a week apart....usually answering the phone is a pretty good policy

I would almost give 3 stars for Yoshi's if all they did was specialize in sushi, since after trying their Korean dishes I doubt I'll order anything BUT sushi from them again. Having spent several months in southeast asia, I've become a HUGE fan of bulgogi and bibimbab, and I have to say that Yoshi's is the worst Korean food I have ever had. The spicy pork bulgogi was overcooked to the point of mush, and the sauce was equally unpleasant. A friend got the regular bulgogi, which had the consistency of leftover ground beef. Everything on the side (miso soup, side salads, california/tuna rolls) was decent but nothing special, thus two stars instead of one.

Consistently the best place for Sushi in the Boston area. Yoshi's rolls always taste great, are clearly quite fresh, are well rolled, and are more than reasonably priced. I'm not saying that this sushi will make you fall to your knees and thank god for these bite-sized morsels of heaven, but they do have some pretty damn good rolls at a good price. The most recent time that Kira D. and I went to Yoshi's, we got a boat. Now, anything is going to be better when served on a boat, but the great thing about this place is that the food is good no matter what. Their eel-avo is always creamy and warm and tastes oh-so-fresh. Their fashion maki knocks one out of the park (this roll convinced me that cream cheese in sushi isn't the work of the devil). Recently, one of their specials was a fried lobster roll. This roll is the definition of decadence. Not only is it FRIED LOBSTER, but each piece is 2 or 3 bites. And all this for about $11! Oh Yoshi, I'd love to meet you and shake your hand for that one. The last roll that i'd like to point out is the beauty of the black dragon roll. Spicy tuna, cucumber and tempura covered with eel and black tobiko. I challenge you to describe me a better roll. These are fresh, generous, delicious pieces of sushi joy in a very unassuming buidling right off Powderhouse. The service has a tendency to be a little slow even when not crowded, but it's worth it - quality and consistency at a good price.

Non sushi eater review: Being right down the street, we've been to (or gotten delivery from) Yoshi's many times. Sushi: Not bad, not great. Good for a sushi-fix if you are one of those people that happens to crave it, or happen to date one. Beef teriyaki: Ok. Sometimes good, sometimes not. Way too fatty. They cut it so you can eat with chopsticks, but then don't finish the slices right through. This is a pet peeve of the beef-teriyaki-eating-sushi-wanna-be. Really, you are not helping with my attempt at hip-ness. And I need all the help I can get. They have some Korean on the menu as well, and this is probably what I'll try next. It's tough to fail at beef teriyaki, but I have to say no at some point. Bolgogi anyone?

I was excited to find a sushi restaurant in somerville near davis, and last night was the first time I ordered take out that I picked up from Yoshi's on college ave. + : + reasonably priced (2 orders salmon sashimi, 1 tuna nigiri, 1 karate maki 1 spicy tuna maki 1 edamame for 29 bucks) + friendly staff + very delicious and well cut salmon sashimi + they were out of yellow tail so they threw in a bunch of extra salmon sashimi for free...really cool of them. - : - i called in an order and they said it would be 15-20 minutes. i got there after 20 minutes and they had not started my order with only one other person in the restaurant. it became apparent that someone had ordered a party boat for take out, which i completely understood, but he should have told me 35 minutes or 40 minutes on the phone so i wasn't waiting awkwardly in the restaurant for 20 minutes. - due to the above situation, the rolls were sloppy (but tasted great!) - there were BONES in a piece of salmon that i ate! in a lifetime of sushi i have never gotten a bone in my sashimi, which really was totally unpleasant. somehow the good outweighed the bad and i will be going back for more in the probably near future.

and Boston continues to disappoint me with their sushi. For moderately priced sushi I was expecting a lot more. I ordered four rolls and not one stood out. One roll came with spicy mayo and I had to down a glass of milk just to keep my throat from closing. Just bad bad bad. Douzo is definitely my go-to sushi place even if it's twice as expensive. *But to give props where they are deserved the guy who took my order was really nice and made sure NO fish eggs made it on any of my food. He gets the star.

I'm really struggling with this review and I feel kind of bad giving this place 2 stars. But with sushi, I am a quality over quantity kind of gal. I am appreciative that most of your sushi is $4 for two pieces, but less so when the quality suffers. The rolls were okay, though the "over size maki" really were over sized in an obnoxious way and fell apart as I tried to maneuver them into my mouth. Ultimately, there are just better options in the area and I am ALWAYS willing to pay a little more for high quality stuff.

Sushi? Delivered to my house? Hell yeah! I had ordered once before and had it delivered and it was pretty delicious. Then one night recently a bunch of us were hanging out at my apartment and all had a hunger deep within ourselves. What did we want.... not pizza, not Chinese, then what? That's when I remembered. Yoshi's delivers! We ordered something like $65 worth of sushi and goodness. My seaweed salad was pretty good and the rolls. Oh the rolls! We ordered several of their specialties. It was an excellent choice. Everyone loved it and quickly devoured every last bit. When we ordered they said 40 mins and arrived approximately on time. I was so pleased. I will definitely order again. They get four stars because I have had better.

Came in for dinner on Saturday night. Our party of 4 was seated promptly by a pleasant waitress. Service was good, water was always full, meals arrived within a few minutes. I had the Bi Bim Bap, which was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend for Korean, but the sushi looked great too.

Yoshi's is the closest sushi place I live near that actually delivers. While I usually just go pick it up, I can have sushi delivered right to my door in 25 minutes! While the sushi isn't extraordinary, it's decent quality, reasonably priced, the atmosphere is nice, and the waitstaff there is incredibly friendly. I've had a few other things on the menu as well that were all decent- my boyfriend gets the beef teriyaki a lot and the meat looks a little fatty but he seems to enjoy it all the same. While the food's not top notch, this is a good alternative to driving to Watertown (see Sushi 21 review) if you live in somerville-arlington and need a sushi fix. Note: if you want some Sapporo with your meal, bring it yourself, this place doesn't have a liquor license.

I LOVE sushi and lived directly --- well, w/in a block --of this place so I was very excited when it opened. I've gotten food here three times and food poisoning twice. The first time I got sick, I'd arranged to meet here with a friend and we ordered a very large plate. I had squid and knew something was wrong as soon as I put a piece in my mouth. I didn't swallow it but later that night - and for the next day - I was very ill. It took me a while but - because it was convenient and I wanted to give them another chance, I tried the sush. I got it To Go, this time and it was fine. I wasn't worried for the third visit and I should have been. I spent all night in the bathroom. I don't know what the problem is but there clearly is one. I haven't been back, obviously. Maybe things have changed but maybe things haven't, either. I see the shop every day and it's never full which is weird considering it's right beside Tufts. Maybe the word is out.

meh. until recently this was our only choice for sushi in the Davis Sq. area. Now sushi restaurants are becoming the new Italian in Davis.... bf and I always felt something was lacking here. sushi is usually ok, but not fantastic. I do like the lunchboxes to get a little variety of tastes though - and they are reasonably priced around $15. But this place never quite compared with the places I really love like Ginza and Fugakyu and now that Taipei Tokyo is open - we go there more often. and it drives me nuts the green tea they have is just a tea bag in a mug with hot water. I want loose tea leaves not a tea bag like I could buy at a regular grocery store from lipton. But the pluses about this place are: friendly and attentive staff, reasonable prices, lunchbox options, and they deliver.

A decent sushi restaurant. Good choices on the menu at reasonable prices. They seemed to skimp a bit on some of the sushi (especially the caterpillar role). The scallops were not the best I've had either. Other than that I enjoyed it for the most part and might return again.

Decided to try this place out because of the name of the restaurant, i kept picturing yoshi from super mario for some reason. anyways, the sushi here was okay...the rice did not seem fresh... ordered a bunch of rolls...the eel was not as tasty as other sushi joints. fast service...our sushi was brought to us in no time. the waitress wasn't that friendly, it seemed like she wantd us to gulp down our food in a minute, kept glancing over with them not so friendly looks...

    1) BYOB. check! (and they bring you glasses) 2) yummy rolls. check! 3) affordable price. check! 4) friendly service. check! 5) atmosphere..."meh"....not horrible, but not downright cute or anything... TOTAL= 4 stars!

Yoshi is one of my favorite. Very quiet and small. you get a lot of attention from the waiter. Some people don't like a sushi restrurant if it's not owned by Japanese, but I think as long as it tastes good with good service, why not. Their secret weapon is sushi warped with cucumber but seaweed. Very Crunchy, that's one of my favorite. Two thumbs up for this restaurant.

This sushi restaurant is located at the end of College Avenue, where it intersects with Powderhouse square. Though not a sight for sore eyes, the sushi is fresh and the service is fast. I order to go at least two times a month.

This place is up and coming. BYOB. The waitress comes over and opens the wine bottle/supplies the glasses. Or heats up your saki. They have deals like the "lunch box" and 3 rolls for $15 that are sweet. The sushi is good. And they deliver - but it can take up to an hour, even on a Tuesday night, which is kinda bogus.

Pretty good sushi at pretty good prices. We were meeting some friends who had just been to a talk at Tuft's, so Yoshi's was very convenient. I enjoyed everything I had there (sundry sushi, spicy tofu, and bites of some other entrees that other people ordered). For anyone in the Davis Sq. area I would definitely recommend Yoshi's, otherwise you can generally find sushi that's at least as good closer to Boston (Porter Sq., Inman Sq., &c), and of course in Boston proper as well.

I was jonesing for some raw fish and rice for dinner. Thus, I ordered sushi for delivery for the first time earlier this evening. All I can say is WOW! Very prompt, courteous, yummy food, AND they deliver to Medford. What's not to like?

  • Anonymous P.

Not bad. Both the salmon/avocado maki and the unagi don were done well for the price. I can't vouch for the freshness of the fish in general. One really great thing was their little pickled carrots. There were only two, but they are loaded with unique flavor.

Absolutely the worst sushi experience I have had in my life. The fish was warm and plastic-smelling while the rice was cold and crumbled at the slightiest breath. Slightly better was the yakitori, which was well-cooked, but the sauce came straight from a bottle. The room is small, crowded, and was packed with college kids. The waiters did their best, but it was obvious they were short-staffed on a Saturday night. All of this might have been mitigated a bit by the presence of sake or beer, but Yoshi's doesn't want me to get a bit of enjoyment out of the meal. Better choices in the area include any of the spots in Porter Exchange, especially Bluefin.

  • Adrienne B.

Good basic sushi. I like it as a change to the usual Blue Fin that I get. I like that they deliver, but it takes forever. I called on Wednesday and they said 15 minutes- it came an hour and 15 minutes later. I'd lik to go in and try their other offerings some time. I'll probably keep ordering since they deliver, and I'm still on the look out for something better.

If you're nearby, it's a quick place to grab some miso, sushi, and whatever other Japanese fare in a nice, convenient venue. The prices are a little on the expensive side, especially considering the sushi pieces are certainly smaller than normal size, but the service is friendly and attentive and the decor inside is simple but appealing. I would rate this 3.5 if I could, but alas. No option. Like another reviewer said, I wouldn't go out of your way to go here, but if you're near Powderhouse Square or go to Tufts, try it out.

This was my 1st sushi experience a couple of weeks ago. First, can we talk about the name Yoshi? Totally cool. But there were no Nintendos in sight. They were very helpful, but no wine or beer, and surprisingly no sake. The waiter was nice and young, and put up with all my questions and weird faces. There was also an old Studebaker parked out front that was for sale for $30,000. A little out of my price range and the man that owned it thought I was tampering with his vehicle, which I was not. Yoshi's is also down the street from this weird creepy old nightclub I am convinced is owned by the mob since it's been vacant 30 years or something. Thumbs up for Yoshis.

This is a cute little place to go get sushi. They have other meals too, but I've tried a few and I was not really into them. Stick with the sushi! And, you might want to ask them to go easy on the wasabi. The tend to put a lot in all of the sushi.

sushi in a tiny setting to grab on the go when en route to davis, from davis, or just waiting on your linens at the laundromat next door. moderate prices, friendly waitstaff, and very fresh tasting.
