Leone's is way better than you would expect from the price and location: The sauce is tangy (a rarity among cheap greasy pizzas), and the crust is perfectly bready but crunchy on the edges. It's also really thick--this pizza fills you up quickly! Leone's weak point in the pizza trifecta is the cheese: although the mozzarella flavor is there, the cheese tends to form thick clumps instead of melting nicely. But at $11 for a 16" cheese pizza, I can't complain too much. Although I have an aversion to green peppers, I still managed to stuff my face with the Leone's Special, which is generously topped with the aforementioned devil vegetable as well as mushrooms, Italian sausage, and pepperoni. All the ingredients tasted fresh and high quality, except the pepperoni, which was flimsy and bland. For gourmet pizza, I'll go somewhere else, but Leone's is tasty, reliable, and a good value. Plus I'm tempted go there again just to see the cute boxes!

Let me preface this review by saying, for me, there are two types of pizzas -- gourmet and cheap late-night greasy pizzas. Leone's is the latter. We were in the mood for good gourmet style pizza. Our current go-to place is the Pinky's. After reading some reviews on Yelp, we've decided to try Leone's. Leone's pizzas are super doughy and cheesy. Some people might like this (evidently, a lot of people do, but not I). The topping choices are about as basic as it'll get. CASH ONLY We ordered a pepperoni and a steak & cheese pizza. The pepperoni pizza was decent, but the steak & cheese was pretty disappointing. The meat was barely used to make the pizza. They literally sprinkled a handful of meat and that was it. And they use so much cheese, when you pick it up, an inch of cheese just falls apart from the slice. For me, the pizzas were way too salty, doughy, and cheesy to be well balanced. CASH ONLY This pizza is not for a king. It's fit for a college student who drank too much and need something greasy and doughy. CASH ONLY If you're looking for gourmet pizza with a variety of toppings to choose from, try the Pinky's instead. It's definitely more expensive but it's also better quality. And they take cards. CASH ONLY!!!!!!!

Mmmm. Bready pizza, when quality bread is involved, is filling and delicious. That's what's here at Leone's. Honestly, I haven't tried anything else besides the Sicilian cheese with mushroom, because it's perfect. Half a tray equals one pizza box (pieces are cut into squares... some with some without crust). A full tray just barely fits into my fridge... or two pizza boxes. Don't despair if your party fills up with two slices while it's fresh from the oven... 5 minutes in a toaster oven restores it's chewy goodness back to original state from leftover status. Our new go-to place because we can order enough for dinner all week long and it tastes like the day we got it. Sure, maybe it's not the healthiest thing... but we all have those weeks where you've got to do what you've got to do.

It's just so good. One of those hole in the wall places that we appreciate and love because they have been doing the same thing for so long. It's a legend.

One of the most unique pizzas I have ever had. Unbelievably cheesy and with a perfectly squishy crust and tons of oregano. Can't wait to have another slice!

This is hands down best Sicilian pizza anywhere ! I've been going here for years it what a pizza should taste like dough is perfect and just the right amount of everything .

Working in Somerville and looked this place up on yelp. And we were a party of four that ordered sandwiches. From Italians to meatball Parma they were awesome. I must say I would put that meatball in my top five. Tender great sauce excellent! !!!!!

Love the food, the staff and the speedy service. Leone's is the best pizza around

I lived less than a block away from this slice of heaven, and I could always count on a happy full stomach. When I went out of country for an overseas tour, this was my definition of coming home to America. Really think pan pizza. Very soft and full, amazing sauce, and way too much cheese (which is exactly how I love it). They rock with Subs and most things that fit under an American Italian food flag. Though I no longer eat pizza as regularly, I would "cheat" on my paleo lifestyle when in Boston (or Somerville) for this pizza. Nothing on the West Coast like it.

  • Bob D.

Absolutely the best! I have been going since I was a kid and it is as delicious now as it was then. I haven't lived in Somerville for years but never miss an opportunity to stop in if I am in the area. Their Pizza is amazing! They make an eggplant and Italian cold cut sub that is out of this world. You also cant go wrong with straight eggplant parm, meatball, steak and cheese or any of their egg subs.

  • John C.

Great sub and pizza joint two blocks up Broadway from Dunkin Donuts on the corner of Broadway and McGrath O'Brien Highway. Great Italian sub. The pizza is also great, old school Italian. Call ahead. Cash only might be the only drawback. A simple old school classic pizzeria and sub shop.

  • Gerard D.

A SOLID choice for pizza, their thich fluffy crust and good sauce definatly hit the spot when its a thick crust is what im craving. Its a great take out spot but if your looking to dine in its good if your in a hurry to eat at the standing counter. They make a good calzone but I tend to prefer a thiner crust personally but thats not for everyone. Parking can be an issue but if you park on the other side of the street their are ususally a decent amount of spots available.

    (3)
  • Justin R.

The pizza was pretty weak. We got a large round (I guess they specialize in square?) and the sauce really just killed the flavor. Too sweet and too much. The crust has promise, but it was really flimsy. Try Pini for a better slice...

    (2)
  • Di L.

Oh sweet baby Jesus, that crust! I haven't had decent deep dish pizza since moving to the east coast, and now here it is right at my door step. Leone's is fit for a king; it says so right on the box. So chewy, cheesy, dense and dreamy. A slice is a feast unto itself! And $16 for a half-tray? That's $2/meal. They accept cash only, but tax is included in their prices, which are all whole dollar amounts, so you don't get piles of change back. That's nice because you don't want to be handed anything but the thing you NOM NOM NOM!

  • Daniel C.

No idea how this is getting 4.5 stars. Pizza just not good. Bland sauce, too much cheese, soggy crust. Except the edges - the edge crust is pretty tasty. If you've ever had pizza on Amtrak - this pizza is only a little bit worse.

  • Chris J.

Awesome pizza with fast and friendly service. We have been looking for a go to pizza joint since we moved to somerville and Leones definitely that place. Sicilian is the go to pizza here and just as good cold the next day. Steak and cheese was also delicious.

The staff is very, very nice! The food is delicious! Love the Sicilian slices! I would have to rate Leone's as having the BEST pizza in Somerville. Their subs are very good as well! Definitely worth a trip back over and over again!

I wanted to put no stars. So phone is constantly busy. I ordered because of the rating. Also lack of alternative. But this was the worst I've had quality wise and disastrous service. I ordered green pepper on one pizza and broccoli and chicken on the other. It cost 39$. The chicken was breaded, which the guy had no excuse for but apparently that's standard after talking to the guy that wouldn't replace it. The broccoli wasn't cooked. The green pepper, wasn't cooked, it was LOADED, like the, was I not completely respectful on the phone or something, kind of LOADED, with pepper. Red pepper, yellow pepper and green pepper, all completely raw like the kind you find in salads. Were they just busy or enjoying their ride with good ratings here and enjoying some steady business? Now I'll be fighting with my wife for the rest of the night due to my inability of ordering pizza.

Grew up on Leone's. Live out of state now and I miss it often. Love getting a sheet when home. Or a slice. Even getting it wrapped for the plane to enjoy back home. Mmmmm.

I am late to the game here, but hey, better late than never. I recently learned about Leone's from a chef friend; she and i both have a great devotion to Regina's in the North End (only) but Leone's does a really delicious square thick crust style. The crust has an excellent chew and delightful crispy edges; the quality of the cheese and toppings is fresh and tasty, the sauce works well with all the rest. So far, I have kept with my low salt regime with just vegetable toppings, extra sauce and extra extra extra well done. The brothers who run it couldn't be nicer (one was actually a career school principal before recently retiring, and now he helps his brother out a bit in the shop) and it gives me a warm feeling to think of all the history there.

Leones has the BEST pizza ever! I grew up in the Ville but moved out of state over a decade ago. Whenever I visit I HAVE to stop at Leones! I also beg anyone who comes to visit up here from MA, to stop at Leones and pick up a tray for me! I only miss three things from the old neighborhood, good Italian bakeries, good Chinese food and LEONES!

Best Eggplant Subs anywhere- I wish that I lived closer so I could get there more than 3-4 times a year but it's one of the few places that is just as good as you remember- and I've been going there for over 30 years! Nick and everyone there is great. I had a sub from there last week and can't wait for another one!

I was born and raised in Somerville, and have been going here for eons. I go for one thing, and one thing only....the Sicilian pizza. Seriously, so good, that it will make you wanna smack your momma. Some long-time places go (RIP Primo's), but if Leone's ever closes it's doors...I will totally flip out. Flip out, I tell ya!

Order the pepperoni Sicilian with extra sauce...AMAZING!!!! Crust is perfect, sauce is delicious and the toppings are too!!! Love love love their pizza!

I agree with all these 5-star reviews! I was craving deep dish pizza, started searching on Yelp and found this gem!! The staff is so friendly, they actually helped me navigate my way home since I wasn't familiar with where I was. The pizza is delish and CHEAP. I agree with whoever said "just go with the cheese". You don't even need any toppings. Definitely will drive a little out of the way after work to visit this place again!

I've been going here for over 20 years and figured to toss my recommendation onto this pile of recommendations. LOVE this place, love the food, love the people, love the menu. All simple and fresh. I'm not a big eater, but have to grab a slice of the pizza with my sub every time I go just because it's SO good. My favorites are the Italian sub, Salami Steak and Cheese, and meatball sub. Delicious!! They used to even send a few slices of roast beef home with me for my cat. Can't be beat.

I can't believe I've never written a Leone's review. I'll keep it short and sweet: -most delicious pizza EVER -friendly, funny service -total townie joint -cash only -no delivery -order by the slice, 1/2 tray or full tray (Sicilian style...even if you're not a fan of this style, get it, you won't be disappointed) -subs are decent, but it would be a shame not to get their pizza -some room to stand at a counter around the shop to eat, but most get it to go -did I mention the pizza was delicious?!?!

    I. LOVE. THIS. PLACE. The best sicilian pizza in the greater Boston area. Everything is fresh and cooked in front of you. All the guys working there have been there forever and always have a funny joke or story to share. The owner is just the sweetest, the last time I was in there he said to me "Don't ever eat at a restaurant where the owner doesn't eat at. Everything I make here I bring home to my family." A great local, family owned restaurant that you definitely need to try! Cash only.

AMAZING! Just moved to Boston from the West coast and never had pizza this good over there. The crust is perfection.

  • K S.

I knew instantly from the yeasty smell of the dough that this was going to be good. A slice of sicilian pizza served right up. I got a corner and the crust was perfectly crispy, plenty of cheese. It hit the spot. A great value too. The place is very clean and all white like an old school italian pizzeria or deli. You can tell they love what they do and take pride in their food. With so many fly by night pizza shops serving assembly line pizza, it's great that this place maintains the art of making actual pizza.

fantastic subs. Only takes cash though. FYI

Best pizza around!! they've been around for 60 years, so you know they're doing something right. I'm a huge fan of their spinach pizza. It's unreal. Asides from the food, the service great. The owner is very nice and personable with the customers

A Somerville Icon to say the least. Sicilian style square pizza that rocks! I prefer well done to get it a little more crisp. This place is old school. Menu has been the same as long as I can remember. No they don't deliver but who cares. No they don't have every style sub you can imagine but whatever. They know what they are good at and they stick to it. Multi generational family owners that we grew up with. It just feels good when I walk in the door. Maybe it's because I grew up here that Leone's holds a special place in my heart like so many other born and bred Villens. I get a little defensive when people write bad reviews without really much thought. If I went on my FB page right now and posted HIT LIKE if you like Leone's I bet it would be at least 100 people.... Ok I just posted it. Will update my review later with the results.... Less than 8 hours from this post I've had 80 people click LIKE. That is about 10% of my friends list. Not bad considering most fb posts get lost in the shuffle most of the time. Give Leone's a shot. You will love the pizza!

Spinach calzone is probably the best vegetarian meal you can get for less than $3 - crust is fresh, chewy and crunchy. Italian calzone was a hit with gf as well.

Leone's is by far the best meatball sandwich I've ever had. I haven't lived in Massachusetts in 8 years but with each trip home there is at least two trips to Leone's. Friendly staff and great food.

  • Johnny D.

The rating: This one was easy, five stars for the Sicilian style pizza alone. Throw in the best steak and cheese sub and five stars seems a little low. Why I chose to eat here: A family institution at my parents home, and now my own home as well, I can't tell you how excited I'd get when my mom would surprise us with a half tray of pizza and subs on her way home from work. The food: How can you put perfection into every single pizza you make? I have no idea, but here they make it seem so easy. This is not your traditional slice of pizza, first of all it is square, like a Sicilian pizza should be. The crust is thick and soft, almost doughy, covered in a simple and elegant tomato sauce with a generous, oh so generous amount of cheese and sprinkled with dry oregano. Sounds pretty basic right? Maybe, but it is the execution, the way the flavors work so well together, the way that no element over powers another, but work together to create a harmony in each bite. In fact the cheese pizza is so perfect I have never in 25+ years bothered to add anything as a topping, ever. If you don't want to order a full tray (two pizza boxes), or a half tray, just pick up a slice or two, which are always readily available, but regardless of how much you order, you will want more, maybe not right away, maybe you will be to full for another piece, but soon the craving will kick in and you will be back. When you do come back, you should probably get yourself a steak and cheese while you are there. I cannot explain what makes it so good. They don't tout pounds of meat in each sandwich like some places, but the portion is not small by any stretch. Nor do they have a million varieties of steak and cheese sandwiches, though you are free to add what you like. No gimmicks, but just like the pizza, this sub is perfect in its simplicity and execution. Chopped steak, American cheese, soft baked roll, that's it. I add grilled onions myself, but rest assured it isn't needed. The only caveat to all this gushing is that I am not enamored with the Italian sub. I have only gotten it once and was just not impressed by the selection of meat, which if I remember correctly did not include capicola, or prociutto. It wasn't terrible, but it also was not up to the lofty standards they set for themselves. But with highs that reach so high, a single low cannot mar an otherwise brilliant food experience. The service: Leone's is pickup only, with a couple of stand up counters and a stool or two to eat at in a pinch. No delivery, no tables. The staff is always friendly and efficient, and the owner is almost always there. The service has never been anything but above par, and in all these years that is no mean feat. The final rundown: As stated earlier, Leone's is an institution in my home, try it once and it may just become an institution in yours as well.

The 5 stars is definitely for their pizza. As the other yelpers have said - it is amazing. I believe a good pizza starts from the dough. This pizza is perfection. I've lived here (not even a mile from Leone's) since 2008 and I'm wondering how I have never heard of them until now. Probably because they don't deliver. Anyway the cheese and sauce are also delicious. I can't speak so eloquently about why like the others can but this pizza is damn good! They are CASH ONLY - not enough people mentioned this in their yelps so I thought I would put it in all caps. Luckily I read all the yelps! I tried to order fries and they don't have them. A sub shop with no fries or onion rings. That didn't bug me though - they focus on what they do well and that's the pizza and subs. The steak bomb was good but not amazing like I thought it would be. Maybe an off day. I just wish the cheese was distributed around the steak more. Nice touch with the salami in there though - more than just the pepper, onion and mushroom. I liked that a lot. The meatball sub was DEELISH. I'm Italian. My nonna come in from Italy and maka the meataball. I also now maka the meataball. I have the utmost respect for these balls. Damn good. Traditional Italian. Utmost respect. This is an Italian family and they know meataballs and that's what they put in this sub. Worth every penny. Get one.

Whenever I'm in the mood for a high-quality sub made quickly, Leone's is my first and only destination. They offer a wide variety of subs, sandwiches, salads, and pizza, mixing both staples like meatball and Italian with variations I've not seen before that often incorporate eggplant. Though I tend to order the same thing, their Italian, a friend generally tries something new each time and has never been dissatisfied. Their subs are large enough that I always have leftovers, and the quality of their ingredients far surpass the competition (both chain and non). The staff is friendly and efficient, and is able to remember enough about their regulars to carry on pleasant conversation while preparing their food. Another highlight of Leone's is its hours; I have, on more than one occasion, stopped in at 10:30pm and left with a satisfying sandwich. My one and only complaint is that they offer no seating, a side effect of the narrowness of their location. Instead, a series of counters line two walls. I've yet to see anyone use the counters during my visits.

If possible I would live here....................try the meatball &eggplant parm sub.....yes I said it...........together..................it's great................some of the best homemade meatballs around. Three thumbs up bring cash....no cards accepted

What this place lacks in physical size (it is super small), it makes up for in big taste. That steak bomb sandwich was out of this world, and probably should've been split between three people. Avoid this place if you are try to cut back on grease, fat and calories. Thankfully I am not one of those people, so I'll be returning for another steak bomb soon!

  • Lou G.

I was always a huge fan of sicilian pizza, but the guys a Leones just take it to a whole new level! I'd never really go out of my way for Sicilian, but with something this delicious where each slice weighs almost as much as my head it's hard not to. Even the gentleman in line who started talking to me unexpectedly told me about how he had just taken a ride in from methuen just to get his fill. And after having read some of the other reviews it's obvious he's not the only one. I could go on and on about the taste and texture of the pizza but i'm sure you could easily find another review to answer those questions, but my suggestion is just to go in and get some yourself.

5 stars across the board - absolutely delicious sicilian pizza; best I've found in Boston! parking is all on street and its all take-out but its definitely worth it. If you haven't had Leone's, you MUST try it.

I really wanted to have found the (angels singing) sicilian pizza. But instead the only thing that was tasty was the mozzarell....Sauce had a PH on par with lemon juice and dough incredibly yeasty, and i like yeast. Folks were nice enough but i'll stick with Galleria Umberto in The North End and Luberto's in Revere.

Love this place! My parents grew up in somerville, and we moved to the cape. When ever someone heads to boston we make a list of subs sometimes up to 20 to bring back home. Eating a sub now and watching the bruins.

Its the best steak bomb in town. And, in the quickly modernizing Somerville, its one of the representatives of Old Somerville that I always try to seek out.

I've been meaning to stop in here forever, and finally grabbed a couple of slices on the way home from work tonight. It was really delicious Sicilian pizza, not quite like anything else I've had. The crust is spongy and much softer than I was expecting - it's thick but almost melts in your mouth. Sauce, cheese and blend of spices are near-perfect. It's definitely super greasy and probably about a billion calories per slice. I usually try to go for less greasy, thin crust when I get pizza, but if you're going to splurge, this is the place to do it. I also agree with what others wrote about the guys who run the place - they couldn't be any friendlier; great people. UPDATE: great subs too!

  • Andrew E.

I'll keep this short and simple - they use real mushrooms. I'm tired of all these other places using canned mushrooms. In my opinion, fresh ingredients are key to having a solid take out meal. If someone is throwing canned mushrooms onto a pizza I might as well do it myself. But this place does not cut any corners, the pizza has excellent sauce and cheese and a perfect chewy-crunchy crust that makes me very happy. Not to mention, the people running this place are genuine and you can have a good conversation while waiting for your meal. Even though this place has less than 15 reviews, the place has been around for 55 years and go here when looking for an excellent pizza. PS - Bring cash, they don't accept credit cards.

I lived in Rhode Island where square pizza was the norm. I know how to order by the trayful, choose my basic toppings, expect no delivery. The best of the square pizza is just like that. So I followed the yelp trail to Leone's one day with high hopes. Leone's looked promising outside and in... old neon sign, fast talking no bullshit Italian dudes at the counter, 1970s decor, no frills menu on the wall in plain black letters, lots of people streaming in and out. Ordered a half tray. Came back 15 minutes later and took it home. Smelled my car up real nice. Couldn't wait to sink my teeth into it. BUT dang it. Got home and it just didn't blow my mind. Sauce needed seasoning (tasted like the stuff you get straight out of a can). Dough was thick but undercooked. Benjamin is right - school cafeteria style K-5 - which is not a bad thing... it's just not the super-magnificent thing I was expecting.

If you remember mccain ellio's pizza, you may recall the added insult to injury that occurred when you tried to eat those rectangles. If the entire top layer didn't slide off by bite two, it only delayed the realization that no matter how you cooked it or how you approached eating it, it wasn't worth it. Leone's is the precise opposite experience. Unlike a pan of brownies, the edge pieces are just as delicious as the middle. Though most pizza can still satisfy when cold, theirs is satisfying AND flavorful. But really it's their balance of crust to topping that delights. Sicilian style done well results in the best of both worlds without compromise. They could put a-b-c fruit stripe on their dough and I would probably still buy it.

    (5)
  • Sydney W.

This ranks at the top of my list for square pizza. IMO its best just to get plain cheese or just 1 topping and not get anything fancy. The pizza has sooo much flavor - you just don't need anything else. Note that you order by the tray... 1/2 tray gets you 9 huge slices which is just about equivalent to a large pizza elsewhere. Their steak and cheese is definitely worth an honorable mention since its really stuffed with steak. Don't wait too long to eat it though as the bread can start to get soggy.

Let me start by saying this place is one of those neighborhood places that has great Sicilian pizza and great staff. The subs are less than amazing but if you want decent food at a low price, this is the place to go. On top of it all the place is spotless and they actually apologize when they have to raise the prices (which is almost never). Ask for one slice and if there are two left on the tray, they always throw them on for free. Where else do you get that? No where! I love the old woman that works during the day. She always has a smile on her face and is generally concerned about the service the customers get. Ask her what Somerville looked like 80 years ago and she'll tell you. I love her and the pizza is good too!

  • Andy C.

Their white pizza is the most delicious thing on earth. Fresh ingredients mixed together perfectly, thrown in the oven for the perfect amount of time. When I lived down the street, I put on like 10 pounds-- almost all of which came from here. Stinks that it's cash-only, but I can get over it. I haven't tried the subs, but I've heard good things. Don't let this place pass you by if you're in the area--

The best Sicilian pizza (takes the cake over close second Pinocchio's in Harvard Sq). A no frills place. They have some counter space if you want to eat in, but go in, grab you slices, and go enjoy the warm cheesy square goodness. Servicewise, they have some wisecracking lifers that make you laugh and you can tell they like what they do and know everybody. Support this joint!

I am giving Leone's 5 stars just for the sicilan pizza. Best I've ever had. Don't know about anything else but who need anything else? Do yourself a favor go pick up a pizza . Bring cash.

I read about this place on Yelp and had to try it. If you are in the mood for pizza but don't want the run of the mil "House of Pizza" / "Papa Gino's" slices then this is the place for you. They make the square pizza's in a big pan which is a nice change of pace. The sauce was flavorful which you don't find around here all that often in pizza joints. I have only had the peperoni slices here so far but they are great. I would rank it the 2nd best pizza place in the Davis Sq. / Somerville area behind Pini's. The people working the counter are very friendly and sociable as well.

It's a luxury being a five-minute walk away from Leone's. They just have the best sandwiches in the area. Their bread is almost always amazing, and they seem to use quality ingredients. I can also highly recommend the pizza. They don't skimp on the cheese, so it's not for people with coronary artery disease, but it's really good Sicilian pizza. The slices with toppings seem to be almost twice as expensive as the cheese, which I can't really figure out, but it might be worth it. They were a little baffled when my mother-in-law ordered a salad, but they did figure it out.

My grandparents ordered from this place forever, and the owner Nick always took great care of them. For subs, I won't order from anywhere else, and their silician pizza is so famous, that people who travel from my company up from Conn; ask me for directions to this place. It's small, but I never find the place empty; and their always orders being placed. No delivery though. so WARNING: parking can be hazardous (yes the meter-maids have digitized parking tickets and are constantly on the prowl!) and a slice that cost you $3 could end up being $27. As far as I know it's CASH ONLY, (check out the old school register) BUT MAN, IT'S WORTH THE HAZZLE OF PARKING.

From the outside, Leone's doesn't look like much. Inside though, there's a great combination of good food, great service, good portions, and good prices on Sicilian Pizza and classic subs. Liked: Sicilian Pizza was great Steak and Cheese and Eggplant sandwich had great portions Counter service was helpful and nicer than you'd expect from a normal sub-shop. Disliked: Steak and Cheese needed more salt Eggplant sandwich needed cheese As other reviewers have correctly pointed out, the square sicilian pizza is where it's at. It's a good deal at $1.75/slice, $12/half sheet (probably equivalent to a 14" large pizza), and $24/full sheet. If you like pan pizza, this is a must try. The subs were still very good, but not really excellent enough to warrant 5-stars. The cheesesteak was good, not too greasy, but not amazingly flavorful either. The eggplant sandwich was also good (you could taste eggplant which is rare but good in an eggplant parm), but needed additional cheese on it. The portions on both were excellent for the price $6.50/large. Leone's is the type of place that's great to have in your neighborhood as an option. I wouldn't necessarily travel out of my way to go there, but if you live in Winter Hill, it should definitely be high on your list of go-to places to grab a quick slice or sub.

After yelp searching for the word "sausage" near Somerville, MA we stumbled upon this local gem. Got an amazing sausage sub with peppers and onions----YUMMM! Making the experience worthy of 5 stars was the fact that the owner and cook chatted it up with us while we waited and gave us advice about some other great local places. We will definitely be back!

The Sicilian pizza here is the best you'll find outside of the North End. The crust is thick and tasty, the sauce is excellent and over all this is the best non upscale pizza we've found in the Cambridge/Somerville area. It's also a great way to feed a bunch of people on a budget. A half tray is ~$10 depending on what toppings you get, and the quality is very good. Their meatball and chicken parm subs are also not to be missed.

The pizza here has been a staple in MANY family parties! We get a tray or two( which feeds ALOT), and ask it to be double sliced! Friends of ours from all around actually request we bring it to them when we visit! The service is always helpful and VERY pleasant!

Been going to Leones for years, there subs are the staple of how subs should be made the eggplant/italian combined for me is the best. add one their delicious slices ok two I am kind of a glutton. and you are very happy. there is a reason that Leones has been in business so long they are the best hands down Somerville has a lot of good sub shops and for Leones to be the best that is saying something.

Had the eggplant with italian cold cuts, great combo. Stopped back in for a slice of spinach pizza, amazing. I am hooked. When was the last time that spinach pizza came with fragrant garlic that was in every bite? Plus the guy threw some crunchy eggplant slices on top of my pizza as I originally thought the spinach pizza was an eggplant one...super nice. Oh, and the first time we ordered (thanks to yelp) my guy dropped both our subs bc (take note!) the paper bag tore. So mindful when you carry out to hold like newborns so that these amazing guys don't have to do your sandwiches over like they did for us at no extra charge...yes, I know! AND I live down the block from them!!!

Great Sicilian pizza. I go to the fencing club behind the shop and it's become my post-fencing tradition to grab a few slices for home. I highly recommend getting sausage, they get it fresh and it's unlike any other I've had on pizza. While putting together the club we got a half-tray of some combo that I think was sausage, peppers, onions, pepperoni, and maybe mushrooms. It was heavenly and I think it was on my mind for a solid week afterwards. Sarcastically friendly staff makes it a fun place to pop into. Haven't tried the sandwiches yet, but heard good things.

I've gone here two or three times to get a slice while on the go. The place is a little minimal and dank, but that's how I like my pizza joints. No bullshit involved. The guys at the counter were surly and cool. But the pizza was not great. It reminded me of school lunch pizza. And my elementary school was given a choice - to have a gymnasium or a cafeteria. We chose gymnasium and had our school lunches brought by a heated truck from another school. So, yeah, the pizza is not great here.

I've been going to this place for years. Mostly when I get a craving for their pizza which has always been really delicious if you like a cheesy pie. Based on the pie alone I'd give it four stars. But I got an Italian sub the other night and it wasn't all that good. The bread was kinda stale and that really ruins an otherwise good sub. So I suggest pay closer attention to detail, offer the freshest products and you'll truly deserve four stars.

stopped in today after reading reviews on yelp about the pizza here. i had a slice.. it was a decently sized for the price of $1.75. the pizza was shaped in a square, and i asked for a corner slice (i like crust). the guy who served me was nice and greeted me and my partner with a smile. our total order was $7. we got two slices of pizza and a coke. i really liked the pizza. it tasted fresh, it was fluffy and tasty, the crust was crispy, but not too (crispy or hard or too bready) and overall the pizza tasted really good! after we left, i planned to come back again before closing to get another slice (theyre open till 11!) its not the best pizza in the world, but it definitely ranks high on my list, good taste, awesome price, open late. i will definitely be coming here often since i only live down the street.

After traveling to London, our basketball team at Emmanuel College got Leone's pizza since we were so hungry! It was such a hit and everyone loved their pizza so much. This pizza hit the spot and we will definitely go to them again. Thanks Leone's for providing such great tasting pizza for our very hungry team!

I had the steak and cheese here. Not only was the steak lean, they cooked it perfectly. I asked for extra cheese (some places don't give you enough), and it came with plenty! I will be going here more often as it is right near my place.

The Sicilian pies have been very good in the past. Tonight I tried a round, standard pie for the 1st time, and was surprised by how similar it was to a Sicilian. Unfortunately, it was undercooked, and had huge slabs of cheese in some areas, and none in others.

  • Ladyjane S.

WOW... this pizza really is amazing! I like Sicilian but this is definitely the best of its kind that I've tried. My sis and I split a 1/2 tray of mushroom for $14. I could only eat a piece and a half and that still leaves 2 and a half for me to enjoy tomorrow! So worth the price for fresh, chewy, crispy, doughy, cheesy goodness! I will definitely be back for another carbfest!

  • chelsea h.

despite the fact that the sub selection is limited (old school steak and cheese, steak and pepper... etc) they are DELICIOUS! whenever i go there i get a steak and cheese, with peppers and onions and extra cheese, and unlike most other sub shops ive been to- they actually gave me extra cheese! i had the pizza- and pizza happens to be my fav food- but wasn't too impressed- not bad, but not stellar either. i stick to reginas and umbertos in the north end! the atmosphere\ decor is plain, and the do not accept cards- only cash (back to the old school) but the people are super- nice, and they know almost everyone that goes in there. go here for a sub and a fun chat with the people that work there!

i live up the hill and eat here a few times a week. it's cheap, it's good, and it'll fill you up. slices are pretty good, especially if you're lucky enough to get a couple from a hot pie. meatball subs are the business, i crave them whenever i'm away from home...

Legendary place on Winter Hill, that has been doing it right for the decades. It is small, old school, and excellent. Their Subs are bomb, and their pizza is excellent. It beats any and all chains that exist. Been getting their Pizza for Christmas Eve for decades now. You can't beat it.

Okay, so I don't, as a rule, like sicilian pizza. I'm more of the thin-crust sorta guy. I tried Leone's though, and it's AMAZING! Best pizza I've had in the Boston area, and boy have I been looking. It's not gourmet with lots of fancy toppings. It's just really really good pizza. The sauce is great, the cheese is great. Pure yum! I've only ever gotten the plain cheese or the pepperoni, so I dunno, they may have fancier toppings, but I haven't felt any need to order it. Just cheese is phenomenal. I do wish they took credit cards, and maybe even delivered, but at least it's not too far away.

  • Michael J.

Hands down, the best Sicilian pizza in the area. The staff is friendly and the restaurant is always clean. I haven't tried the subs yet, but if the pizza is any measure of overall quality, they are probably outstanding. Check this place out if you live anywhere in the area. Hell, drive there if you don't, it's that good.

Sorry, nope. NOT the best Sicilian. Not bad at all, but my fave remains Galleria Umberto in the North End. Those squares are sublime. PS - Check your change. Manual system no workie for the inky dude working the register.

After living in Somerville for years, I finally tried this place out. And boy am I happy I did! This place is a must for anyone that lives in or near Somerville. I always hear people rave about Bob's in Medford, but they don't even compare. I ordered a small hot pastrami and it was the size of a mountain! Very generous portions. This place is a true sub shop with endless options and combination's. It was absolutely delicious. I didn't get to try any of the pizza but several orders went out while I waited and it smelled amazing! I can't wait to go back!

for sicilian? the best in town. the sandwiches are great too! the employees are fantastic and nice. this place is also dirt cheap which rocks. i am apprehensive about writing the review as i want to keep this place a hidden gem but its that good, everyone should go IF you like sicilian. please note, there is no place to sit. you either have to carry it out or stand at a lil' 1/2 counter to eat it. PS - get a slice and the italian with everything and you will be full and VERY happy.

Remember the soup Nazi? That's his pizza brother. Not a huge variety, and a little rough around the edges where service is concerned, but what they do have is very, very good. A hearty, well done pizza with all the trimmings. Takeout only and no credit cards.

The most amazing Sicilian pizza. I don't know about you, but usually I douse my pizza with red hot peppers, parmesan, oregano...the works. This pizza I wouldn't touch--Absolutely nothing could make it more perfect.

If you like sicilian pizza, you should definitely go to this place. You can get a half sheet for $9 and I promise you it will be the best pizza you ever ate. It is so good! Their calzones are great too. I suggest the steak and cheese calzone. It's the best.

  • Thomas F.

Wish I could give it 10 stars! Food is always fresh and awesome. Pizza is the square thick sicillian kind, so soft and delicious. Subs are packed, they are not stingy with their fillings. And they even do catering trays. I got a lasagna roll tray and it was fantastic! You can't order anything bad here! GO TO LEONES!! Enjoy Life!

I've had A LOT of pizza in my day (especially living in Providence the past 2 years) but my god, I cannot believe I have yet to review my FAVORITE PIZZA PLACE EVERRR This was a staple of my childhood. My family grew up in Sommerville and there was no question.. when it was anyone's party, we ordered Leones. I usually don't like square pizza, but no where else is this good. Its ridiculous. Also, their Italian Sub is gigantic, delicious and (if I wasn't so scared of what my ass would look like if I did) I'd eat it everyday.

After living a few blocks away for 4 months I finally tried Leone's for lunch and immediately regretted that it took me so long to do so. We walked in off the street on a Saturday early afternoon. I had a ham and cheese sub and my wife had the chicken parmigiana sub. Both were delicious with fresh bread, veggies, sauces, etc. The service was excellent, quick, very friendly and authentic. We're looking forward to returning soon to try the calzones.

I used to live in Somerville and still work there so this place is a frequent stop. No matter what sub I order I MUST bring home at least one slice of pizza for my wife along with one of my own. On the rare occasion when a tray isn't ready, I'll wait. My usual order is an American with everything. The cheese meatball and the steak and cheese are also top notch. Great place and great staff that's been there for years. I'll usually park across the street in the old Star Market parking lot and walk across Broadway rather than look for a spot in front.

  • Jamie H.

i stopped by leone's on the way home with my parents, and what an unexpected surprise...it was delicious. as an added bonus and reason for the 5-star rating, it's really cheap too. we got a few slices each of cheese and pepperoni pizza, plus a garden salad. the pizza is silician style, with a sweeter sauce. the crust is thick, chewy, crispy, and soft all at the same time, and able to support the cheese and toppings. i liked how the cheese had a nice oregano flavor and wasn't put on too heavily. i was surprised with how good the salad was, full of spinach, lettuce (not iceburg), a full tomato, green pepper, red pepper, pepperoncini, and olives. most quick pizzerias just give you iceburg and a few colorless tomatoes. not here, it was huge and only $6. get your pizza for takeout or delivery, as there is no room to sit down. we stood at the side counter to eat before we got in the car, but it's definitely meant to be a take-away spot.

A few weeks ago I went in with my sons there was a man behind the counter I don't know if he was the owner but he was treating one of the employees very bad yelling at him in front of customers and getting frustrated. That he was preparing the sandwiches all wrong I felt it was so rude . I felt bad for the young kid behind the counter and when the man took over to make them .at this point ididnot evenwant Them an more I won't go in the food was not eve good all cold tasted not fresh

So good. My girlfriend said, "I don't want Pini's tonight." Urrr-- since Pini's was the only decent place to get pizza that i knew, I came here to Yelp, and bumped into Leone's-- almost ignored it, but then some of these earlier reviews caught our eye. This is a low-key, deliver-only (unless you want to stand and eat your slice), masterpiece of a pizza joint with a classic old school attitude to match their awesome vintage signage Read other reviews for more rhapsodic waxing, but they are right SICILIAN- amazing. The crusts is soft and airy (which is an odd way for me to describe pizza, but it's true), and yet crispy and hearty at all the right moments. Their sauce is fantastic. MEATBALL-- this is the best meatball in the universe. or at least in somerville. i don't even like meatball pizza. well, now i do.

Decided to stop there one night with a friend and that was after I've driven past the place about a hundred times; proceeded in and ordered one of their subs: a pastrami & egg sub and took it to go. The sub itself was very good and prices very reasonably; from memory, I don't think that I was able to finish it, it was pretty big. The staff was really friendly and parking on Broadway is fairly easy to get but unfortunately they don't offer any seating there, just a few stand up and eat counters. From chatting with the staff there apparently they've been in business for over a generation and have been there for a very long time; it's very impressive and cool to know that such places are still striving after so many years. I will be back!

  • John S.

The ingredients are fresh, the sandwiches are made with speed and pride, and the prices are right. Leone's is one of my favorite Winter Hill locations. I'm not saying the quality of the subs alone are worth moving here, but if you just happen to move here, you'll be going to Leone's once a week like the rest of the locals.

The in-house Sicilian pizza snob says the pizza is good, if not quite as good as Victor's (in Ball Sq) but I have to say my chicken parm sandwich was pretty nasty. If you're expecting a fried, pounded chicken cutlet, that is not what you are getting here. Not worth the calories.

I consider myself a pizza connoisseur growing up in Boston, spending most of my childhood in the North End. Leone's is 1 of the best pizza's in Boston, you have Leone's, Regina Pizza North End location and Umberto's on Hanover St. Their square Sicilian is heaven, heaven sprinkled with Oregano!!!! I always bring trays of the " heaven" I mean pizza to family functions, Sunday football and Superbowl Sunday. They will always ask you how you want the tray cut, if you want smaller slices. Cash only, stand only, always friendly staff, owner is a friendly guy and the place is always spotless. Be careful Leone's Sicilian is an addiction!

Really great place to stop by if you just want to quickly grab a slice. I love their sauceless spinach slice, I don't know what it's called, but they don't always have it. No problem, though, their cheese is also amazing! Got a sub for the first time tonight, eggplant parm, and it was delicious, but they didn't melt the cheese. It was the awesome tomato sauce that put this sub above most of the other (many, many) eggplant parm subs I have had. The people who work behind the counter are really nice and always help me out with a smile. Great place!

By far my favorite pizza! My family has been ordering there for years. I was never a fan of square pizza, but it is like no other. I usually am satisfied with just the cheese because its that good. I tell everyone they have to try it!

I drive past hundreds of sub shops on a empty stomach just to have their steak bomb, steak & cheese, or chicken parm. It is cash only so hit a ATM before you head in. The portions are HUGE! I've been comparing their steak bomb to all others for decades & all others have fallen short.

Unbelievably delicious subs! Try the eggplant / meatball combo...I'm pretty sure they serve them in heaven. The pizza squares are awesome too! Great local spot, can't go wrong!! The world needs to know about Leone's!!!

The spot is a landmark on winterhill. Two seats and a counter around which to get oiled up. The large egg, salami and cheese sub with salt, pepper, grilled salami and mayo was as gut busting as it sounds. Perfect after a night of drinking or to cure a hangover the next day. Have yet to have the pizza but a darn fine sub I did.

6 STARS! LISTEN TO ME! Ok hi hello. This is by FAR the best pizza on any planet I've ever been to. I'm from NYC, and this destroys even the best places there. Building it up too much? Nope. I signed up for Yelp JUST to review this place. The crust? Lets get this out of the way: it's Sicilian, so it's not gonna be the crispiest crust, but the crust is DELICIOUS. It's soft, dense and melts in your mouth. The pizza box weighed like 800 lbs, so I knew this was going to be a mouth party. The cheese? It's like velvet. Have you ever eaten VELVET? Please don't...eat this instead. Buttery honey velvet cheese. The sauce? PERFECT. Not too sweet, not too salty, not overspiced, consistency is exactly as it should be. I'm Italian and I make tomato sauce all the time. Trust me, this is good. Toppings? Real mushrooms, real onions, chunks of tomato, and strips of chicken. The chicken was mediocre, but this place is known for its amazing meatballs, so I'll go that route next time. The owner is a doll. He came out just to talk to me because this was my first time going. Very friendly staff. No delivery and no dine-in, only pick up.... but obviously completely worth the trip because they're thriving. OVERALL: I felt like I was biting into heroin. A wave of happiness rushed over me as my teeth sunk into this pillow of delicious heaven. I'm 105 lbs, and now that I've discovered this place I'm expecting to shake hands with 5 extra permanent pounds.

Best pizza I've ever had, and I've had some fancy pants pizza in my life. I went in an hour before close, and was not only greeted by a bunch of gracious Boston boys, but given a free slice of a new kind of pizza I hadn't tried yet. Such friendly staff, deliciously well-seasoned pizza, and its just that good. Look at the other reviews! This pizza is amazing- no skimpy toppings, lots of cheese, good seasonings, and a crust that's practically a breadstick. Does it get any better?! This is our new favorite pizza place, and I would never hesitate to go back again. These guys definitely know their pizza.

I just moved a few doors down from Leone's, and after reading some of the reviews here and needing some food while moving in, I stopped by for a sandwich. First thing I noticed was how friendly the staff were. They joked about me calling it a hoagie (I'm originally from Philly), and were overall extremely nice. When I order without cheese, they will offer another kind of meat to add to the sandwich as well. It's a great place to grab a sandwich, and living so close I go there probably too often. My last time I was there I met the owner himself, and he was extremely nice as well. I've only been there a few times but they always ask me how I'm liking the area and how my move-in is going. Unfortunately, I can't comment on the pizza, as I'm lactose intolerant.

  • Sinddy D.

Are they willing to fry you something...NO. is the steak and cheese really flavorful, cheap, and awesome? YES! The service here is awesome and they always make you feel welcomed. I use to work across the street from this place and it always delivered. I am a big fan of their sandwiches and salads...especially the breakfast sandwich- egg salami and cheese is super cheap and tasty. I am a big fan of the garden salad with chicken and peppercorn ranch dressing. This is not a eat in place and it is popular with the workers/ folks trying to grab a slice or a plate-special. It is a mom and pop shop, the owner is really friendly and very involved in the community.

I went here today with my wife because we had a small sample of their delicious pizza at a family party a few months back and I had been craving it ever since. This was our first visit to the actual establishment and I was shocked to discover "CASH ONLY" printed on the menu above as soon as you walk in the door. Naturally, I had no cash on me and my wife only had $8. As we were conversing amongst ourselves deciding what we were going to do, the gentlemen behind the counter interrupted us and asked us what we'd like. I informed him we were unaware it was "cash only" and told him we only had $8 and needed to go to an ATM. He promptly responded with "what would you like" so I told him and he gave it to us for FREE despite knowing we did NOT have enough cash to pay him. This is an establishment with fantastic food and superior service. Owner is an absolute class act. You simply cannot go wrong here!

I have tried all the rumored best places to obtain an Italian Sub sandwich. Leone's has it over all of them from Somerville to Stoneham and beyond. Also, their pan pizza is excellent. The family tradition has shown for many years and has always been a stable in Winter Hill.

  • Mollie W.

I love this place. It's a little piece of home-y cafeteria style pie, and I mean that in the best way possible. It's like sicilian pizza meets all the things you love about Nana's sauce and the pizza your elementary school served on Fridays. Staff is really friendly, and the owner is a second generation of the Leone's clan. He's also a fun to talk to retired principal...so maybe that's why it's school pizza perfection as well. I haven't had the subs but when the pizza is a mere 12 dollars to feed two hungry people dinner AND lunch, I don't know when I'll decide to get one. That eggplant parm looks oh so tempting though, as the aforementioned principal gave me a sample of the eggplant to try!!! I'm getting it tonight! YAY SQUARE PIZZA!

  • Melanie S.

Let me start by saying that I began eating this pizza in the womb and I'm not entirely sure my mother would choose me over a full tray of Leone's. And, don't get me wrong, she loves me a lot. Despite my jealousy, I must say this pizza is truly phenomenal. People who cry about them not having salads are clearly confused and need to reassess their places in this world. The staff is awesome and I can tell you the same few people have worked there since I couldn't come close to seeing over the counter. They only take cash and they don't deliver, but it's worth the drive and the trip to the ATM. Don't be a chump, just do it.

I wish I had two more thumbs so I could give Leone's four thumbs up. Growing up on thin crust pizza I had the propensity to turn up my nose at Sicilian style pies. That is, until I tried Leone's. Its true that all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. Similarly, all Leone's slices are squares, but not all squares are Leone's. In fact they aren't even close. Drop what you are doing and go there immediately; I don't care if you just got back from lunch or dinner, it will be worth it. Slice and a sub? Hell Yes! I'll let you choose your own pizza topping(s), but heartily recommend the steak & eggplant and meatball & eggplant subs. I would, and did, walk an hour each way through a Nor'easter to get me some Leone's. Their box says "Pizza and subs fit for a King," but I'm not sure kings deserve to eat this well. Glad as hell that I can. PS - Aside from top notch food, Nick dishes out sound dating and marriage advice. I wish I listened to him earlier about my ex-gf...he is less of a restauranteur and more of a prophet.

The meatballs are excellent. The sub was let down by the mediocre quality of the bread and the resulting lack of sauce. The bread is too soft to carry enough sauce; a crustier loaf would do wonders for these subs. The pizza was okay, if you like a very bread-y slice.

The first time I had Leone's pizza...oh god...I'll never forget it. I ordered a full tray--half spinach and half pepperoni/meatballs. I don't know which one made me jiz in my pants more. So much garlic in their sauce....drool. I don't know how they make their dough but I have never had anything like it. It's so fresh and slightly gooey (not in a gross uncooked way)...Now I order it about once a week and it hasn't disappointed. Their cheese steaks/steak bombs are also pretty awesome...but as awesome as their PIZZA!!!!! I also want to say that their sicilians aren't SUPER thick but they are PERFECT--I hate the sicilians that are too thick for the amount of toppings. Oh man...I'm totally ordering right now... P.S. I can't believe there are people out there who won't support a local mom and pop simply because they don't take cards or deliver. You people are missing out.

Probably my favorite Sicilian pizza. I've had subs, too, and they're good. I almost always get the Sicilian pizza though. Delicious. Try it out! Also, great prices and incredibly friendly staff! They get to know you, here.

The food here is good (though I am not wowed). I would probably give it 3.5 stars, but decent prices bump it up to 4 stars. It is a take-out kind of place and no seats, though there are places for one to stand and eat. Service was quick. The sicilian pizza was good, though I feel there could be a bit more taste to it (a bit on the sour and bland side). The eggplant steak sub was huge even though I ordered the "small" size. A lot of eggplant and steak! The eggplant was very good, but the steak again lacked seasoning. It would be so much better if the steak was better seasoned...

I grabbed lunch at Leone's yesterday and I think I'm still full. You can't go wrong with Leone's. The pizza is phenomenal. The subs are second to none. And the folks behind the counter are always friendly and provide great service. If you're looking for a recommendation and don't mind feeling guilty afterwards, go all out and grab yourself a steak bomb. It's makes Thanksgiving seem lame. It makes Girl Scout cookies seem like any other cookie. And it makes McDonald's fries seem plain. Do it. DO IT! Can't say anything bad about Leone's. And if you do then you probably won't live to tell people. Just sayin'.
