Today I had a late lunch at the Daniel Webster Inn. I arrived at 2:40 and was informed that I could not sit in the garden room because brunch was over. Not a problem since I did not come for brunch, but I did not understand why I had to sit in the tavern. The waiter came over promptly and asked us what we wanted to drink. We had water. He promptly served us water, but did not give us rolls which I thought we usually get. After ten minutes he asked us if we wanted rolls and came back and said they were out of rolls and said I could get the cheese and crackers in the corner of the bar which I had to get myself. My daughter ordered the special chicken sandwich and I had a hamburger. He didn't inform us of the choices like fries or pasta salad in which case we received fries and he did not ask me how I would like my hamburger cooked, however I told him I wanted it cooked medium. When I received my burger it was cooked rare, so I had the waiter take it back. Five minutes later it comes back mostly cooked medium, but I left a quarter of it because it was still rare. Now, I can understand closing the garden room to clean it, but I could still see a lot of people in it and what kind of restaurant runs out of rolls. I had a coupon to receive eight dollars off of lunch. Our waiter came back and said they could not take the coupon because it was torn in half. I informed him that the other half was for dinner and was sixteen dollars off. He went to speak with the manager and came back five minutes later to inform me that they wouldn't except the coupon but would make an exception and this was after I informed him again that some of the coupons in the south shore dinner book are for just lunch or dinner, but this was for both lunch and dinner. You see, their should not have been an exception as this was the coupon to use. Obviously your waiter was new. He was slow, was not efficient and insulted my intelligence questioning me about the validity of the coupon. The meal was terrible the second time around to being undercooked in sections and overcooked in others resembling a hockey puck. I will think twice about coming in here again.

We enjoyed several fantastic meals in the tavern and the restaurant. Highlights include the breakfast granola and the cream of cauliflower soup at dinner. Seafood entrees are great at dinner and they make great cocktails too. I particularly enjoyed the Cape Codder made with blueberry vodka. Service is very friendly though not always attentive.

I agee that the brunch is excellent. But in general I've been disappointed too many times in the Tavern to rate this restaurant well. The service and food is below par. Not a good value.

This review is for the restaurant. I met my parents there on 8/15/10 for Sunday brunch. We were told that the only seating available was in the tavern. That was fine, but they were serving only breakfast and an odd "Betwixt and Between" menu, without absolutely no fresh fish available. Cape Cod - fish - it's sort of a no-brainer, isn't it? My parents ended up having breakfast. I had a burger and fries. My parents were embarrassed that they had chosen this place, after remembering that it used to be great. We all left thoroughly underwhelmed. Go elsewhere...there are much better places on the Cape.

I am pasting a letter we sent to the management FOUR TIMES (in 2 different versions). This probably says it all but I would just add that in this day and age of social networking and instant response and feedback, I can only conclude that it must be arrogance that would prompt them to not respond AT ALL to our experience. Unprofessional and discourteous in my opinion. Dear Sir or Madam, After a long drive from New Hampshire, we stopped at your tavern restaurant tonight for a light dinner. My wife and I both ordered the veggie burger with fries after reading on the menu that many had commented that yours is among the best. We also each ordered a beverage. We waited what seemed like an unnecessarily long time to receive our orders but we commented to each that that would not be an issue if the burgers turned out to be good. Unfortunately, that was far from the case. The burgers tasted (and resembled) mashed rice blended with over cooked broccoli. They were too moist to stay together while eating but more importantly, they were devoid of any flavor beyond rice and broccoli. I poured (not sprinkled) black pepper on mine in an attempt to improve things. We also noticed that the cheese was not melted and there was not enough mayonnaise to cover the packaged sliced bread. As vegetarians for a combined 47 years, we always appreciate finding a veggie burger option on the menu but in this case, we both felt that we could have made better ones on our own (and we are lousy cooks). Finally, we were not even offered refills of our beverages. All in all, this was a very disappointing $33 expenditure. Thank you for taking the time to read this with the same sincerity with which it was written. __________________________________ Visited, September 2014, traveled as a couple

The food is solid: never had anything bad here, never had anything outstanding. The service is the reason I keep coming back: it's an old-school kind of thoughtfulness you don't really find many places these days. For instance, when I ordered a Jameson's neat, the waiter automatically brought me a small glass of unchilled water just in case I wanted a chaser -- without me asking. That's the first time in probably 20 years I haven't had to ask. Small thing, I know, but to me, that says it all... The tavern room has a lot of atmosphere.

We ate lunch today in the Tavern. We had an Open Table reservation so we were seated immediately. The restaurant was busy. Our server was very attentive and friendly. We shared a veggie pizza that was great. We also had a glass of wine and a salad. The wine and food were very good. Nice lunch spot on a rainy, cold Cape Cod day.

We were greeted by a very dour receptionist at this hotel, who was very businesslike checking us in, with no charm at all. It was 9 pm and we had just arrived from New York. We ate in the Tavern, which was open till 10. I had a lobster/brie sandwich, $15., but you needed a microscope to see the lobster! They very nicely substituted asparagus for the fries, but the order contained 4 small spears. Very disappointing. The room was adequate. However, the wifi, although free, was very slow and often non-existent. maybe because both windows in our second story corner room faced a wall. This is not an inexpensive hotel, so I really expected more. Also, this is not a bed and breakfast. They provide a $15 coupon per room as a credit toward breakfast. The breakfast room is lovely.

If I could give this experience less than 1 star, I would. I've lived in Sandwich most of my life, and have eaten at the Dan'l Webster several times. Previous to this visit, the last time was about 2 years ago and it was wonderful. I prefer to eat in the tavern, because its less stuffy and formal than the main restaurant. So...one night after trying to go eat at Tomatoes, where there was a 45 minute wait, I remembered that I had seen online that the Dan'l Webster had updated its menu and things on it looked fabulous. So we headed over. BIG MISTAKE. We went down to the Tavern and were seated quickly, and then left alone for almost 15 minutes. When our server finally came over to us, he took our drink order and then wandered off. When he brought the drinks back 10 minutes later, we asked him "What's your favorite thing on the menu?" He chuckled, leaned down, flipped over my menu page, and replied "Here are all of our entrees right here." Great, super helpful thanks. Then he just walked away again. There were a lot of really delicious sounding items on the menu and I was super excited once I figured out what I wanted. We ordered a cranberry and spinach salad to split, and it was decent - but really, how can you mess up a salad? THEN, I ordered for my entree: "Sweet Pea Ravioli 20 demi 14 Scented with Meyer lemon and fresh tarragon. Complemented with a silky mild curry and carrot purée, baby carrots, pea tendril, arugula and toasted almonds. " Sounds delicious right? WRONG, so wrong. What came out were four ravioli, completely sauceless, covered in wilted spinach, with single raw carrot, a handful of defrosted frozen peas. There was ZERO sauce anywhere on my plate, and the ravioli outsides were hard and dry. Yuck. When I got the courage to cut into one and taste it, all I got was a puree that tasted like canned peas. NO meyer lemon, NO tarragon flavor, NO curry-carrot puree, NO toasted almonds. My guest ordered: "Seared Yellowfin Tuna 10 Cumin crusted, rare pan-seared tuna with wasabi crème fraîche, tobiko and an avocado tomato salsa. " Also sounded fabulous. Mistaken, again. What came out was a completely dry, completely cooked through piece of tuna, laid over a cut up, squishy, and browning avocado mess. The tuna looked and smelled disgusting, but we braved it and cut in anyways, hoping for the best. So sad. This piece of tuna was horrible. So dry, so lukewarm, so not seared, and so overwhelmingly cumin-covered it was impossible to taste anything else. The avocado mess underneath was nearly flavorless. Best part of the experience - when our waiter came by we had both pushed our nearly untouched plates to the side of the table and were not eating. He asked "How is everything?".............right. So delicious I only wanted 1 bite? We told him both plates were awful and nearly inedible. All he did was pick them up and walk off. 5 minutes later he drops the bill on the table and says "Pay for what you want I guess." and leaves. EXCUSE ME??? No apology, no questions, no offer for replacement, no management visit, nothing. Just "Pay for what you want I guess." We paid for our drinks and went over to the BBC, which was, as always, delicious. Needless to say, will never be going back, and I now tell everyone who mentions this place that both the food and the service are appalling. Too bad, it used to be a really great place to eat.

Had lunch today in the Tavern and it was great. Super moist turkey burger with walnut truffle oil, Jarlsberg cheese and cranberry garlic mayo. Washed down with some Makers Mark as a bracer and was ready to hit the frigid beach.

Went here for lunch on a random Sunday and sat at the bar in the tavern. Most people arriving seemed to be attending for Sunday brunch. The tavern is separate from the main part of the restaurant and has a quaint, old-world feel. The buffalo burger was great! It is actually made of real buffalo meat and served with a special BBQ Sauce. Very tasty. Decent beer selection and some flat screen TVs. Important note: they have free slice your own cheese and crackers in the tavern. Free is always good, isn't it?

Stopped in at the Tavern for lunch!! The Service was great the food, outstanding! Salmon Caesar Salad. Fresh and delicious! My husband loved the Lobster Salad plate with the Maple Cider dressing. Appetizer was scallops and bacon with a honey Dijon dipping sauce. Sooo good!

A wooden tavern inside the hotel. Enter through the front and then down toward the back. A fun location where you can forget the time of day

My family and I had some of the best food we have ever eastern at this restaurant! The sweet potato ham soup was amazing! The almond encrusted salmon was so juicy, so delicious, it seemed fake. You can't find a piece of salmon like that in NY where we are from. The chicken with the avocado honey glaze was stupendous as well. This food alone was worth 5 stars, but the decor in the dining room put it over the top. Traditional new England feel with the awesome Coi fish pond and shrubs were wonderful. Our server Dan was so professional and on top of every thing. Or experience could only have been improved with less saggy seats. Very livable with how great everything else was.

For the price ... meh, I sure have experienced better. I found the service to be in the 2-3 star range. It's not so much a B&B, since you have to pay for breakfast anyway. Food is not bad but not outstanding. Left me wanting more for the $$$ spent. Def did not live up to expectations. Not sure what else to say.

Reviewing a lunch in the bar room which was quite good and just what we were looking for in the middle of a day of puttering around on the Cape. The bartender was very friendly, prompt, knew a lot about the menu. The bar room had that "Old New-Englandy" feel--dark paneling, fire in the fireplace. Comfortable. There is a tavern room adjacent to the bar room that has a more dated feel, kind of like your grandmother's kitchen. I wouldn't really want to be seated in there. I had their lobster chowder which I highly recommend...very, very good. My scallop-cake sandwich was just so-so, maybe could have had a bit more flavor, but fine. Not a broad selection on tap, but the beers they had were good ones. Prices were very reasonable. All in all, a safe bet for a good lunch.

I am writing my review for the hotel and the restaurant. Both of which I enjoyed thoroughly. The grounds are well maintained with beautiful gardens and patios. The location is not far from shopping, antiques, historic buildings and great little taverns with good food and music. The room was cozy with comfortable bed and adequate space. The staff was friendly and most of their menu is organic. I had a great time and would go back for a stay!

Missed the Saturday lunch but decided to go for the tavern bar menu and was pleasantly surprised. Excellent beet salad, French onion soup and lobster roll. The service was friendly, helpful but a bit understaffed. Would return again for a bit of history and good food.

Met up with some old friends today and chose to have lunch in The Tavern vs the nice dining room so we could comfortably enjoy each others company and not feel we would disrupt anyone with our laughing and giggling as we typically do when together. I love the Tavern's atmosphere....always cozy and on chilly days they have a large hearth fireplace going - and today was no exception. We had an awesome waiter, Brian, who was very attentive however as my friends and I were talking so much, we just ordered drinks for the first hour or so. Brian was accommodating and at no time showed annoyance towards our 'dallying'. When we finally got around to ordering our lunch, we all selected one of the specials - a chicken salad with cranberries and walnut, layered on apple slices on toasted whole wheat bread!! OMG - it was just awesome and I would LOVE to see this item on their menu. I've posted a picture as well. My friends and I ended up staying for FOUR HOURS with more drinks and catching up. Brian was still very attentive while he also covered a number of other tables in the room. It was so nice to be able to enjoy my friends without feeling we might be nudged along for overstaying our welcome. We were certainly watching other tables and would have moved to the bar if we felt we were keeping new business away from our waiter. All in all it was a great experience...one of many that I have had eating in both the Tavern and the Dining Room. The staff did experience a little smoke from the fireplace during our stay...wasn't sure if it was bad wood they put on or the flu was not working. But, they did have to close it down to stop further smoke from filling the Tavern. Was unfortunate - but we were experiencing a very windy day and maybe that had influence on the chimney's drawy. Please note, this is a very popular spot on week-ends with groups of diners there to attend weddings, showers, women's lunches and the like. The parking lot can get full quickly. If you have a senior in your party, the Inn provides I nice drive-through carport where you can drop people in your group to avoid walking in from a far back parking space. I will certainly return again as I know I can always count on great service no matter what area of the Inn I may be dining in.

I had dinner here with a small group, I feel Iike since this is on the Cape that I should cut it some slack but I want to give an honest review: On first arriving in this large old hotel, you get the sense that this was once an elegant place that has seen many bad renovations through the 70's or 80's and hasn't been maintained since. The dining rooms are sadly outdated, with worn carpeting, filthy ceilings, and delaptated furniture. The place had just an overall bad smell to it. The wait staff, although friendly and attentive seemed to be unaware of proper table - serving etiquette. Some of them smelled like cigarettes. The food: we were all underwhelmed with our dishes. I ordered the serloin steak. It was nicely done, they should have removed the excessive fat. The baked potato and broccoli were just that, no seasoning. Just served plain. flavorless and bland. $30. The Daniel Webster is an expensive yet depressing experience, but it seems to be popular with the over-eighty crowd. But for people who can still see, taste and smell... it is sub par.
