Popped in on a Monday night to enjoy an empty restaurant. As before, staff was uber friendly. They allow you (with no attitude) to try the soups, which is really nice. I tried the Chili carne, which had good flavor, but was waterier than I like. I ended with the clam chowder, Clam chowder: thick and really well flavored, potato/clam ratio was higher than I'd like though. My girlfriend got the mushroom soup: really nice, well flavored and not terribly creamy I couldn't resist getting a brownie: really good, good mix of rich, chocolate, and fluffiness

Amazing. When i am feeling under the weather this is my go-to. Changed my world the first time i tried the split pea soup.

Awesome tasting soup. You can also get sandwiches/wraps and fruit. Even on a hot day you can't go wrong with some good soup.

The soup is great always hot and fresh. People at counter are friendly and fast! Nice to come here to warm up and take a load off

Great place for a quick healthy meal. I usually get the chicken soup with noodles, but they also have some seasonal soups that are great such as Habanero Tomato and Thai chicken soup. You can't beat the price, and they will let you sample any of the soups. Love this place.

Hubby and i went here for a late lunch while visiting Salem and after walking on a chilly afternoon to warm up and being a huge fan of clam chowders, i thought this was the place to go. As soon as we enter we were greeted by a friendly staff and he offered me a tester for the clam chowder before ordering since my eyes were fixed on that soup, i tried it anyways and as expected, the taste was great. Hubby ordered the same thing and we both got the pint size without any bread so i won't get full that fast and be able to finish my soup. They have corn in it and though i'm not a fan of corn i still finished the entire thing. It was was very satisfying in the end and both hubby and i were glad we came here.

This place stands out as it always has fogged up windows from all the hot soup! The lobster newburg is amazing, so is the clam chowder, always fresh and yummy! The only bummer is the short hours... Also try the rolls, so yummy for dipping!

  • Jack R.

A little disappointed. Sampled their lobster Newburg and their chili before settling, and I do mean settling like you would for a woman during last call at the bar, for their corn and clam chowder. Once again a lukewarm chowder with very little flavor other than the cream. Honestly, had it not said "corn" I wouldn't have noticed it in the soup. Lackluster chowder. My search for the best MA chowder continues...

This place has great soup. I ordered the Chili con Carne and devoured the entire cup greedily. That being said... No amount of amazing food can make me forget about the service itself. That is JUST as important, and seeing as they've been in this town for so long, you would think they know better. The only worker I saw that day was the boss man. He was a bit stand-offish and kept questioning my choice, with comments such as "It's spicy" and "It has meat in it." I found it quite frustrating since I read the board which lists the ingredients. I didn't say a word though, I thought that might just be his personality. Then, two other groups came in after me, all males. He was kind and talkative with them! Didn't bat an eye at their orders. Really? I don't know if it's because I was a female there alone or what, but I don't appreciate being treated so differently.

We walked in for lunch having not been in the area before. The shop is cute and not too busy. We went to the counter to order and they told us to try some samples. They said try as many as you like. I decided to get the lemon zest chicken with orzo (which came with a bread roll or oyster crackers). It was delicious. The perfect amount of sour with a nice spinach taste that's not overwhelming. The orzo was soft and doesn't even really need to be chewed. The chicken didn't interest me. It was okay but I usually find chicken in soup to feel dry and not as flavorful. But the soup as a whole was one of the best I've had. I followed my family into the place not sure I even wanted soup and left feeling like I got a unique taste of Salem. The only other complaint is that they don't have ice water in a cup.

The New England Soup Factory is a cute place for a little quick bite in Salem. They serve a variety of tasty sandwiches, soups, salads, and snacks, and all within a cheerfully painted small space, with a nice view of the comings and goings on the main street. The woman who helped my mom and I on the day that we ate here was super nice and happy to give samples. This was especially helpful when deciding if we really wanted to eat a big bowl of soup on a hot summer day. The verdict: The soup was good, but we'll have to come back when it's colder to really enjoy! The avocado chicken wrap was fresh and flavorful, and I enjoyed the tomato mozzarella salad we ordered as a side. They also have a nice selection of chips and drinks from the local area. Now that I'll be working in the area, I'll definitely plan on coming here more often.

I would say pricey but fresh. Not the best clam chowder just OK, mine was barely warm and watery. The chili is very good and hearty, sandwiches are fresh and good nothing to write home about. I have had better chowder from a can. we came because all the good reviews, what a bummer.

The lobster newburg was out of this world! This place is very clean and reasonably priced! Great stop for a quick lunch.

Quality soups, prepared eith care. The humble shop has a homespun feel. The offerings range from ordinary to extraordinary. Worthy light meal.

This place was odd but the soup was really good. We got the clam and corn chowder and really enjoyed it. We got it with a "French roll" which was a little block of ciabatta (not great). But the chowder was awesome!

Great place for a soup before visiting the town! There is good parking on the street nearby or park in the structure near the theater and walk over. You can sample the soups prior to ordering. My favorites were the chicken noodle soup with puff pastry top and the clam chowder. The soups come with a roll or chips and they have 8 to choose from. Highly recommended while in the area for a warm meal that won't break the bank! They also have an ice cream and dessert case for those of you who want something sweet afterwards!

  • Jill D.

I don't know why this place gets such great reviews. I keep trying to give this place a chance, because I work nearby and its convenient. Last time I was in I ordered a soup and got back to the office to find there were ingredients in the soup not listed on the board. Today, I ordered chicken soup w/out noodles. I am sitting here with a $6 cup of broth with two carrot slices and maybe a few tablespoons of chicken. What a waste.

Excellent tuna sandwich on the freshest bread. Delicious HOT soups. Friendly prompt service. What more can you ask for? Perfect choice for a quick lunch on a cold day. Kids loved it too.

The smell alone was divine!! I have eaten here several times and am always stuffed. The soup is wonderful and not the typical flavors. The bread and sandwiches and fresh and prices good for the quality.

Love this place in Salem. We decided to go here after all of the restaurants in Salem in October were completely crazy. So glad we did. We got the chicken soup and it was delicious! Best chicken soup I've had in a long time. Tasty, with a little kick of spice. The staff is super friendly and they offer samples for you to try. Perfect meal for a fall day!

This place is just awesome. Always have fresh soup and other food at cheap prices, clean place to sit and eat, and a super friendly staff. Personally I also recommend the Lobster Newburg.

  • Rachel M.

The service was great. The chicken pot pie soup however was not all that I had hoped! Weird consistency and the pastry on the top of the soup was not very flavorful. Bummer! Maybe the other soups are better tasting. :(

Good selection of soups. Incredibly friendly and helpful staff. I was traveling with a large group who couldn't decide what to eat and the staff gave us a local restaurant recommendation even though it meant sending business away. I came back for the soup and the service within ten minutes. I got the curry carrot nixed with the butternut honey. It works!

While waiting for the witch dungeon museum down the block, we stopped in for ice cream. I got the sugar cone with graham central station and it was prob the best ice cream flavor I ever had. If you have a sweet tooth for ice cream, this place will satisfy it.

I really liked this cute, little find in downtown Salem on Washington St. The service was good, the food was delicious, and it's a great people-watching spot. I got two homemade soft pretzel sticks with delicious honey mustard sauce, chips, a veggie wrap, gazpacho, and a water. The wrap was so big that I took half of it home. The pretzels were amazing! It's a cute spot, and it's very cheap too!

I honestly happened upon this restaurant while visiting Salem for the first time with my boyfriend. It is a quaint little place to grab a quick but delicious bite. I got the vibe that this is where a lot of locals go for lunch. They were extremely accommodating and understanding of my nut allergy because one of the girls working had a nut allergy as well so I felt very comfortable eating there, which is rare for me in a restaurant. I ordered the chicken pot pie soup and LOVED it. I felt like I was eating homemade chicken pot pie - they even gave me a warm biscuit! I would definitely come back here the next time I visit Salem.

When one comes to New England, Massachusetts especially, it is priority to have a nice hot bowl of New England clam chowder. The New England Soup Factory has clam and corn chowder and may I just add... IT WAS THE BEST BOWL OF CHOWDER I HAVE EVER HAD. The roll was a little small but for the size of the bowl of soup it was perfect. The bigger the bowl the more rolls you get. There were many sizes from a small bowl all the way to a gallon!! Definitely wish I could find a way to bring all the soup back to Chicago because I could live off of their clam chowder..... Best thing ever.and the service was very welcoming as well! The seating was limited if you came during a busy hour but when you get there at just the right time it's a the perfect stop on a chilly day to a warm up with a great bowl of soup. My boyfriend and I are definitely going back because their soup was top-notch! Panera who?

A haven in Salem Center--a place where if you need a bite, there's something to please everyone in your party. It's also a bargain, which helps when you are in Salem which can be expensive to visit. A stop here will rejuvenate everyone, and not take too much time away from your day of sightseeing. Not fancy, but clean, pleasant, and friendly. The lentil soup with lemon was delicious, but everyone in my party had something different and all of us were happy.

If you are in this area and you like soup and sandwiches you MUST try this place. I had the lobster Newburyport and my wife had the Lemon chicken Orzo soup which was wonderful. I had the Tuna supreme which I thought was wonderful, the bread made it. My wife had a turkey sandwich that was good, but a little too salty. Over all this small establishment is so far the best food of our vacation so far and we have been gone nine days!

Extremely hospitable staff, friendly. They let my husband have tastes of 4 soups before he could decide on one. My risotto asparagus soup was flavorful, and the lobster bisque was quite yummy. No frills here, using paper and plastic, but keeps the costs down.

They are super nice here to their customers! I was originally going to get the NE clam chowder but after i sampled the pumpkin sausage i wanted to switch even though they had already poured me the cup, but they happily changed it for me and the french rolls were delicious as well! I'll come back again for the great price too! $7 for 16oz

Good soups! I actually returned to this place recently after vowing to NEVER go back based on the evil manager that worked there. He treated his employees terribly! Hoping they have new management, because when I recently returned I noticed he wasn't there.

We were in Salem this Halloween (and yes, it really is like Disneyland) and stumbled into this place. To be honest, we were a little worried since there was only one other couple inside, but the reviews here gave us faith. And you yelpers have come through once again! There were about half a dozen soups to try. The wife got a turkey sandwich with a clam and corn chowder. I wasn't too keen on corn being in the chowder (it was basically NE clam chowder plus corn) but it wasn't bad. I got a bowl of lobster pumpkin soup which was great. Not too much actual meat in it, but the flavor was spectacular. They looked to have quite a selection of salads and pre-made sandwiches for those who aren't coming for the soup. We will probably be back the next time we find ourselves in Salem.

Chili with a kick, creamy lobster newburg, a solid chicken noodle veggie, and absolutely delicious Hamlet sandwich with a spicy honey apricot mustard - all pleasing and satisfying choices in Salem on a crisp October evening. Wraps are a generous size but sandwiches are quite small. Not much in the way of seating and ambience, but a friendly staff with an original selection of soups and sammies for a variety of tastes. Hit the spot.

  • Michael F.

My fault for ordering something other than the soup. You don't go to a rib joint and order the pasta. My wife and I had the turkey and havarti roll ups and my daughter had the chicken noodle soup. The roll ups had plenty of lettuce and tomato but hardly any meat or cheese. I mean one slice of each. It was thin. Back home we call them wraps and they are stuffed. We were disappointed. Needless to say, the soup was a big hit. Tasty with plenty of noodles. I've learned my lesson. Service was very friendly. Prices very reasonable. I would go back next time for the soup even if was in August.

Just ok. We had chowder with corn. Thought it was watery with too much pepper. The staff was friendly and courteous.

Anything, ANYTHING on his menu is outstanding. The days he serves Israeli Couscous with lemon something (I can't taste it but can't remember the name!) I'm on it. He updates his website daily with the specials. Looking from the outside it doesn't look like much, but trust me, go for the soup.

Went back today. Haven't been in a couple years and it's still amazing! Had the Newburgh again and my brother had the chicken noodle. Both delicious! So many different and unique items on their menu. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Can't wait to return!

  • N P.

Ok, cute and casual place. Sandwich prices are great... Soup and sandwich a little on the salty side... They call their smallest size a bowl ( the bowl ate the cup???).. Service was ok, person was hiding in the back rom and only came out AFTER a customer entered the store.....

I stick with the chili! I was never really a chili person until I started eating at the New England Soup Factory. I lived in Salem for two years and really fell in love with this small soup restaurant. If you get a bowl instead of a cup you get an extra little loaf of bread to dip in your soup (or crackers is you prefer). Pricing was fair for the area and the soup itself was always great. They have a really great variety and always have a vegetarian and vegan option. My only complaints would be that the space could use some updating. I stuck mainly to soup, so I can't really comment on the other food options but I have heard that the soup really is the best that they offer. When I moved away from Salem last fall, a friend got me the New England Soup Factory cook book which, although not the same, helps me get my fix of great soup!

  • Brynn C.

Loved this place! Small, but efficient. The Corn and clam chowder was literally the best soup I've ever tasted. I have no idea how they get that much flavor in their soup. The Lobster newburg was a bit too salty for my taste, but it had bits of lobster and a good base flavor. The rolls were awesome! I'm taking one star away because the menu seemed more confusing than it had to be. Wasn't sure if I could/should get a side salad or side, or where everything was.

    (4)
  • Boris P.

Love the place!!!! Been going there for years. Polite, clean and attentive owner and employees. Love the spicy lobster newburg and also the spicy shrimp curry (coconut?) soups. Chicken salad sandwich and a soup is a perfect lunch for me. I would recommend this place to anyone anytime. I notice some people complain about the rolls there..They are awesome AND tough to chew through but they are supposed to be that way. I love the rolls there.

If we can give this place -1 stars, we would. We went the weekend before Halloween with some friends to see the Salem festivities, and this place made our experience in the cute little town a bit "horror-ble". Together, we ordered - two lobster newburgs and one chilli. The chili gave us indigestion and the lobster newburg was so salty it was inedible. Also, the lobster newburg should be called newburg. There was literally 2 very small pieces of lobster in a 16 oz container! 0 stars for food. The servers themselves were nice, but the manager was terrible. He treated the other workers there terribly and spent most of his time yelling at them, and he was not nice to customers. After we had ordered, he started offering samples to subsequent customers. We were never offered the chance to try these, otherwise, we wouldn't have wasted our money on this inedible meal. -1 stars for evil mustached manager! The bathroom was also overcrowded with random people from the streets. It's nice to offer your bathroom to non-paying people, but please give usage priority to paying customers. Also, no toilet paper in the bathroom. Not sure how this place even gets 4 stars. It's awful. Avoid at all possible cost!

I've been going for a few years and their soup is a guilty pleasure. They just added hot and sour soup! Saving it fpr the next time I go.

This was my first trip to New England Soup Factory and it will not be my last. The vegan soup options are flavorful and hearty, something that can be rare in vegan soups. The staff working knew their food and were able to answer questions about what ingredients were in the products without hesitation. Overall I was impressed by the speed and level of customer service provided by this establishment and I will be making a return trip next time I have soup on the mind.

I am a fan of soups and chowders, so whenever it's drizzly and I find myself in Salem, I am essentially compelled to visit the New England Soup Factory, and I am never disappointed. The restaurant is tiny, so finding seating can be tricky if you go around lunch, but for mid to late afternoon, it's perfect. The gentleman that owns it is very nice, and usually he's in the store serving up the soup. The staff allows you to try a free sample of the soups they're offering, which is awesome and has helped me decide on a soup in the past! They also serve very yummy and varied sandwiches, although I mainly go for the soup. If you happen upon a day where they're serving beefed or vegetable stew- do not hesitate, buy it! I wish they were more restaurants like this. Unique, with a nice staff, great food and a really pleasant atmosphere to eat in. I usually get take-out, but the times I have sat down to eat I've found it very relaxing. Prices are more than reasonable for the great food you're getting. Give it a chance if you're dying for some soup!

When its cold and you've just walked from the train stop to the House of Seven Gables and are on the way back, nothing is better than a nice cup of soup. This place has about a dozen varieties each day and we had the white bean/pumpkin (slightly sweet) and the triple strength chicken. A little pricey, but very hearty.

  • Mark M.

We swung through Salem en route up the coast and chose this place because of the great reviews on Yelp. I was with a decent sized group (7) and we all got different soup and sandwiches and all RAVED about their choice (and thankfully shared with others). It's worth noting that they don't put the noodles in the chicken noodle soup until you order leaving the noodles firm, fresh, and retaining their structure. The chicken salad was perfect: chunky, perfect amount of dressing, and on perfect bread. The staff is also super friendly. This place was A+.

  • Chris L.

We stopped in during a Halloween weekend visit to Salem, and was glad to have a hot tasty lunch to stave off the unseasonably cold weather. The soups were fresh, and I sampled all the vegan and vegetarian options before settling on a delicious harvest vegetable soup. Hubby got the New England clam chowder and loved it. We both got the half-wrap and soup combo - some of the sandwiches are pre-made in a deli case, but mine was still very fresh and tasty. The counter guy was friendly and quick to offer little taster cups of any soup. I'd have given 5 stars, but the seating area was freezing and not as clean as I'd have liked... Still, souper good stuff. Wish this place was closer to home - I'd be there all the time.

My daughter & I went to Salem, MA in August. NE Soup Factory came recommended by the good people on Yelp. So we went, we devoured, we loved it. My daughter had the NE Clam & Corn Chowder & I had the Lobster Newburg. Couldn't ask for a better lunch. It was a bit more then I had expected to pay, but worth every penny. Looking forward to our next trip to Salem. Believe me, NE Soup Factory will definitely be on our list of places to eat. I also want to extend a special thank you to all of you people out there in YELPville for the recommendation. You guys rock.

A convenient little soup place if you live in Salem. Lobster Bisque Review: SAVOR IT. The soup isn't as fresh as I'd prefer, but you can't beat the lobster per spoonful. I think the flavors could be more dynamic, but it was the perfect take away lunch on a gross rainy day last May. I need to get out to Salem and try it again!

Yes! Good soup for you! Love this gem in Salem. Their salads are terrific as well. All the soups are amazing and they change daily. I got Sweet Potato and caramel onion today and loved it. The bread is always soft and fresh. Line out the door goes fast. I went again yesterday and got the Tomato and Portuguese bread soup. So delicious! Bowl is around $5 w/ bread, pint is $6. Healthy lunch place. Love!

Soups on! oh, and sandwiches too... The price is what is the bad part here. The soup is great. But the chowder is not. (surprising considering its the NEW ENGLAND soup factory)

Awesome clam chowder! Definitely recommend the clam chowder and a small sandwich to go with it

    (4)
  • Sadaf H.

These guys have the best lobster newberg and chicken pot pie soup! Their sandwiches aren't as awesome, but i go there mainly for the soups. I agree with TH about the menu being hard to navigate, it needs to be organized better. Also i think they could use a dehumidifier. There's always a ton of condensation on the windows.

DELICIOUS! Such a great location. Right in downtown Salem. I've never had anything here I didn't love. It's amazing. The servings are always hearty and they are willing to give you a sample of any soup. Fantastic service and an excellent product will keep me coming back time and time again.

On a chilly fall day or a brutally cold day, I crave nothing more than a giant bowl of soup. Oh look! New England Soup Factory! Problem solved! Although there are not as many soups as you may think would be there, this tiny little soup stop has the right selection of soups with sandwiches and bread to accompany them. There are combos you can choose from to get the best deal for what you want to eat. However, the menu is difficult to read at times and knowing what soups are available may need to be clarified by asking an employee. Finding a table to eat at can be hit or miss depending on when you go. All I know is that chicken noodle/chowder/whatever soup tickles your fancy... this is a good spot to get it. Located right in downtown Salem, New England Soup Factory is easy to get to and can pack your order to go if you need to catch a train or if you just want to enjoy your soup as you meander about town.

  • Lia M.

I love the soup here! I've only had the chicken noodle (on multiple occasions), but it is delicious. You can sample the soups before buying, which I do, but I always go back the chicken noodle, which is my favorite. Another reviewer mentioned the rolls are not great, and I agree - just OK. I also do not recommend the salads or sandwiches, as those aren't anything great either. But the soups are delicious. It is tiny inside, so I would not come here with a big group.

  • April P.

Honestly soup is not my thing. I will have some once in a while but i am never craving a big bowl of soup. The soup here is pretty good though. I've had the lobster newburg, which was spicy and smoky in flavor. I had one that was Thai inspired..can't remember the name but it had squash and peanut flavors. Also a little spicy, which I appreciated. The sandwiches are nothing great, and next time I will skip getting one. I had a caesar salad once too, and it was just a pile of romaine lettuce, some croutons and a side cup of dressing that was so thick i had to spread it on my lettuce. Long story short, stick to the soup.

  • Sean L.

When my girlfriend and I want soup, this is THE place go. I have yet to be disappointed by anything they serve. The soups are fantastic, and the salads/wraps are great too. The only real negative is the price. Two medium cups of soup and a soda come out to nearly $20. That's pretty steep for soup. It is delicious though.

Looking for a quick, yummy lunch (or dinz) on a cool New England day? Look no further than the N.E. Soup Factory in Salem. Granted I've never ventured from their soup menu, but why would I? It's not called the crummy sandwich and wrinkly salad company... I love that they let you try out all the soups AND that they have a soup hotline that lets you know what soups they are serving that day. Service is pretty average, decor is slightly scary, but the soup is where it is at. Enjoy!

This may not be the most exciting of menu offerings, but does that really matter? On such chilly and wet days as we've had in New England this winter, soup is, indeed, good food...and what's to be had at the New England Soup Factory is MUCH better than anything out of a red-and-white Campbell's can. I've been three times, and have had the chili con carne (a medium cup), the chicken vegetable (a quart, their most popular choice, and with noodles - as I was sick with bronchitis, this was perfect comfort food) and the Lobster Newburgh bisque (a quart - wonderfully creamy and peppery, and very warming on a cold winter's day). You can choose from different kinds of bread - 3 mini-baguettes, 3 rolls, or 3 packs of oyster crackers - and the Salem location also has baked goods on offer for dessert (I chose a blondie this last time, a lovely treat). I'm looking forward to trying a few more varieties of the house specialty on future visits. Definitely worth your time and money.

Love.love.love.love. Plenty of soup for you! If you get the chance try the curry crab soup, it is off the chain. Other A+ choices are: chicken pot pie, beef stew & the lobster newberg. Always pipping hot and made with the best of the best.

Totally Yummy. Soup samples are great! Bread is OK.. I like their vegiterian wrap - veggies are ALWAYS fresh. Very affordable and fast. I live in Salem, and this is one of my favorites. Try the Chicken Pot Pie soup or the Lobster Bisque. To die for!

Soups we've tried are: chicken noodle, lobster newburg, and carrot ginger. Soups are good, if on the salty side, but sandwiches are very sparse. You would think there's a run on lettuce, they're so light on fillings! (but heavy on price). I go here for unusual soups, but in general you can get excellent (and not so salty) soups from Cafe Kushko next door, or Gulu Gulu Cafe. Also, the sandwiches at Kushko and Gulu are much heftier than the Soup Factory.

I am so depressed that we do not have anything close to this out here in So Cal. The New England Soup Factory did not disappoint !! For $25 my gf, her godmother and I were able to fill up on phenomenal soup with drinks. They both had the chicken pot pie which came with a little biscuit on top. I of course had to get the New England clam chowder and it was better than I could have hoped for. Creamy and rich with huge sized chunks through out. My gf and also split a beet salad which contained fresh organic beets tossed with onions in a raspberry vinaigrette. How I wish they had a location out my way but something tells me it would just turn into a bastardized west coast version. Thanks New England Soup Factory for warming up our cold bones before the evenings ghost walk.

Great veggie soup and sandwiches. The bread could be a bit fresher but the vegetables were absolutely fresh. The dressing was - as my partner puts it - divine. Also try out the sodas they stock. I recommend the ginger pear variant of Tommy's Naked Soda.

There's few places that I get a 1000% good feeling about when I think of going there. But New England Soup Factory is one of them. First, soup just has a special place in the hearts and minds of everybody. It's fillings; it's hearty, it's generally warming, and there's just so many kinds that have become time-honored traditions. New England Soup Factory has like 8-10 different kinds of soups/stews ready for you to sample. They're never hesitant when it comes to handing out the samples, either... you wanna try it? You got it! They seem to have a set of pretty regular choices with 1 or 2 that get changed around every now and then for variety. The New England Clam Chowder is delicious as is the "Chicken Pot Pie" soup. Both do great justice to the tasty traditions that their names conjure up. There's usually like a Lobster Newburg flavored soup and some kind of split pea w/ham. You can also find lentil soup and some kind of curry based soup whose name presently eludes me. Bottom line, you will NOT be disappointed trying the New England Soup Factory. In fact, I recommend that you not only get your soup for that meal but that you also get 1 or 2 to go so you can continue to try them in the comfort of your own home. There's also a refrigerated case that contains some fresh, healthy salads and sandwiches. A friend once got a vegan selection from it but I'm not sure if they do that all the time. The seating area is not the main attraction. It's pleasant and meant for you to just sit down and suck down your soup. Which, by the way, is always accompanied by either a regular, or wheat, baguette.... yeah, free bread and butter for you soup enthusiasts who want to add just a little more density to the experience. Free town-sponsored WIFI and, oh yeah, they also have drinks, cookies, and one of the most friendliest, accomodating, pleasant managers you will EVER, EVER meet... ;) Happy slurping!

Great place for a quick lunch or a snack. It is hard to please my bestfriend who is a vegan, but she was overjoyed by the selections of bean soups and beet salad. I on the other hand had a fantastic mozz. and basil sandwich and a bowl of the spinach parsnip corn chowder. What I like best about the NE Soup Factory is that they allow you to sample soups before selecting. The lady behind the counter was extremely friendly and helpful, and this might just become my new soup spot!

VERY small place with reasonably priced sandwhiches and soup. The clam chowda' with corn was VERY good and filling and the tuna sandwhich was good but nothing out-of-the-ordinary.

I went here shortly before they closed on a weeknight and I was the only person in the place. The woman who took my order was very friendly and was happy to give out samples of the different soup varieties. I settled on the classic New England Clam Chowder and it didn't disappoint. There was a perfect hint of black pepper and I especially liked the kernels of corn for the added texture and flavor. I am from the Midwest and we don't have much of a selection for soup shops. This place was a welcome change of pace.

This could be bad, and I mean very bad to know about this place. I have a feeling I'll be coming here weekly. Feeling very under the weather today, dizzy and lightheaded I headed out for some sustenance and remembered reading about NESF. Better to buy then prepare is my motto. You know it's going to be good when you walk in a place and your glasses fog up because it's so toasty warm inside. I decided to try the lemony lentil *vegan* and the curried carrot apple with honey *veg* soup thinking I would have one for lunch and one for dinner. Well, they are both gone and it's not even 2pm! The rolls were fine since I just break it up and soak it in the soup, hard before maybe.....but certainly delicious afterwards! All I can say is I may still be dizzy and ill but I'll be dreaming of more soup while I take my nap!

Went on a cold Saturday in February, my wife had the clam chowder, I had the lobster newburgh. Both were as close to perfect as you can get! The staff was helpful and friendly. This is a must for a lunch stop in Salem.

You may be a tourist in Salem, but you don't have to eat like one! This friendly little soup shop with cute and colorful plate decor will make you feel like a regular instantly. The staff was friendly and gracious from the moment we walked in and had no problem giving us a load of samples and little styrofoam cups of water, and they didn't even get annoyed when my family took a little while to get our act (and our order) together. The soups here are delicious and you can try as many samples as you like. I didn't even need to utilize this however, because every member of my family got a different soup and I tried them all! The vegan soup had a major kick and the pumpkin white bean was creamy (but had no cream) and flavorful and delicious. The barley mushroom was also hearty and warming on a cool day. I opted for the chicken pot pie soup, with a cute little flower of puff pastry on the top and bottom. It totally hit the spot for me. The other prepared foods were great too- the Thai noodle salad was simple and pleasant with ginger and green onions and peppers. There was a nice wrap with turkey and Boursin cheese, among other delicious items. There was also plenty of fresh fruit to choose from. This place would be perfect for a quick lunch, to eat in or for takeout. I'll have to try the Newton location, as it's a bit closer to home for me.

The soups here are all fantastic. They win awards. The man behind the counter who seems to always be there is so friendly and has no problem giving out a million samples to everybody that walks in. They're best seller, the Triple Strength Chicken Vegetable, is probably my least favorite. I got the Pot pie soup and although it was really good and it did inf act taste like eating a pot pie, it was too heavy to finish. The Chili is very solid, no frills chili that fills you up so good you won't care you just ate a whole cup of beef. Next time I go I will get the lobster bisque. My favorite is for sure the Mulligatawny .

I had the best tuna sandwich there yesterday that I've ever had. I don't know what they put it in, but it was magic and I might go back today. I also had the vegan barley soup, and that was also delicious. The two people working there were friendly and efficient. Definitely check it out!

Just stoped in there today for lunch and, as a big soup fan, i was impressed. I had a very creamy lobster soup that, because i splurged for the 16oz, was around $8 yet worth it. With it came a rather hard and bland roll that was worthless. For a sandwich i had a Jamaican jerk chicken salad sandwich which was good but far too small to really keep anyone full. My lady had a fairly simple chicken noodle soup (props to them for using thin spaghetti noodles though) and a good yet forgettable italian sandwich. Overall i would go back, but it wouldn't be anything i would go out of my way to get to (ps, its a much better idea to use the chips they have as oyster cracker rather than dealing with their bread. I used jalapeno chips in my soup and it was A+ delish)

This soup is so good! I've had many varieties and they are consistently wonderful. My favorite would have to be the thai butternut soup. I can't get enough of it! Their salads and fruit cups are always fresh and tasty too. The service is outstanding and they will offer samples of all kinds of soup while waiting patiently for the tough tough decision. Sadly, the rolls that come with the soup are always pretty tough and flavorless. I also am slightly disappointed by the slight eco-unfriendliness. They only serve on disposable tableware for dining in and they won't refill their cleaned plastic takeout containers. They serve many bottled beverages but do not offer recycling either. I'm not the earth police or anything but I noticed. I still love this place and go often.

The soups are wonderful, and the service is fast and friendly. My favorites tend to the the spicy ones. I wish we had one in Gloucester!

Great food here for the price. I got a 12 oz soup, half a sandwich, and a water bottle for $10. It was enough food. Really liked the chicken & avocado sandwich. I've had better clam & corn chowder but it was still pretty satisfying. would definitely go back.

Yum Yum Yum this place is so great! I only go here when it rains all day or when its crappy out because there soups make me feel so good!! I love the customer service by the employees here they are just completely friendly and down to earth!! The atmosphere is just so happy and bright!! But I would prefer to go over eat it because its kind of a small place sit don't look so comfy but dont let the detour you from this place!!

thai butternut squash soup...spicy chickpea butternut soup..curried crab coconut..portugeuse bread soup. nothing is better when its cold outside like new england soup factory. i have to say ive never had a soup i did not like here mostly due to the fact that they let you try samples before you buy! GENIOUS!! some just are not my thing but theres always at least one i enjoy...and i will say i look every day at the soup of the day online menu to check for thai butternut squash soup...this is must have soup, i mean i even listed is as my last meal here on yelp it is that much spicy goodness! give it a shot and you will not be disappointed

The employees here are super nice, and the soups are the best I've ever had. They have vegetarian AND vegan offerings daily, which is a super plus. Two thumbs up for sure.

  • Lauren F.

New England Soup Factory has a wide variety of interesting soups. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is that I think the prices could be a little bit cheaper. They have some great vegetarian or vegan options, like spinach and split pea soup (vegan) or lentil vegetable (vegan). All of the soups are labeled as to whether they are non-vegetarian, vegetarian, or vegan, so it's easy for anyone to pick out something suitable. For carnivores, the Italian beef stew or chicken pot pie is delicious. My husband loves the chile con carne, with kidney beans and ground beef. The sandwiches are also good, particularly the Hamlet, which has a nice apricot mustard sauce, and the chicken salad. For side dishes, try the cold sesame noodles or the sweet potato salad.

Came here about a year ago on my way to take my Millers Analogy Test at Salem State. Really good soup! They let you sample soups so you can make the best choice. I had the sweet potato with caramelized onion- it was amazing. If you're walking around Salem on a chilly day (or any type of day), visit this gem!

I go here every now and again for lunch and it's OK. Most often the soups are WAYY too salty. I like the fact that they have vegan/vegetarian options that are clearly labeled. My favorite is the Thai Butternut Squash- spicy and flavorful! I have gotten salads and sandwiches before but was not very impressed. It's also kind of expensive, so I don't make it a habit to eat there.

I go here often and have really enjoyed the amazing variety of soups! The only downside is the atmosphere. It feels like you're eating in a sub shop. But still the food is fabulous and shouldn't be missed.

This place has the best tasting soup I've had in my life thus far. Reasonably priced, helpful staff, interesting location, its got it all. Except the store itself can only comfortably hold 6 people on a good day. Their selection changes but a Vegetarian and a Vegan option are always available (and delicious) and they always have what look like fresh made salads. I've never had one of their salads so I don't know how fresh they are. You can buy soup by the bowl, the pint, the quart or the gallon. Fresh or frozen, you can take a few gallons how and have soup every day for a month or use it all at once in the bath. Really, the soup is that good.

  • Tiffany M.

It was ok. I had high hopes. The chicken pot pie soup was just ok. The pastry is like a pillsbury biscuit...not impressive.

  • Tony M.

I love it that you can sample the soup before you commit to a bowl or cup. I never get past the first sample. As soon as I try something new, I'm hooked and need to have a bowl. The flavors are great! Every soup I have had there has been a knock out.

    (5)
  • Jonathon S.

We love NESF. Whenever we go, I taste other varieties, but invariably come back to Chicken matzoh ball. The only thing I'd say bad is that sometimes the soups are over-seasoned. You take a sample - its delicious, but when you get a bowl, you realize how salty it is. The Newton location has better seating than Brookline - but we like both.

After an excellent review on the Phantom Gourmet I decided to try this place. It is very cute inside, bright paint on the walls and clean. The first thing that happens when you walk in is that you are offered a sample of any of the soups that they have that day. It's a nice way to try something new without having to buy a whole cup. The soup menu changes daily, but there are always fresh and delicious salads and sandwiches to compliment what you choose. My all time favorite is the the chicken soup, while you may think it's pretty ordinary, it's totally knock your socks off tasty, and you can get it with a giant matzo ball, with noodles, or the way I get it, with both. The service is really great with the employees always going out of their way to make sure your happy with your food. They have drinks available in a reach in, but I think that's all. Other favorite there are the salad dressing which are (like the soups) made from scratch, the chili, the chowder, and very occasionally they have a Bing cherry soup that is to die for. Eat inside or take your soup for a walk to any of the benches or fountains in the area for some people watching.

Not cheap, but well worth the money for some of the best soup you can buy. Do you know that scene at the end of 2001 when the stars go streaking by?? That's the feeling I got when I first tried their chicken soup. It is the most intense and flavourful chicken soup on this planet and you can have it with a Matzo Ball the size of a baby's head!!!!! The place is small and unassuming. If you blink, you'll miss it, but everyone should go there at least once. It's also vegan friendly and they make a mean mozzarella/tomato salad!! I couldn't reccommend this place more.

  • Sue K.

the best soup EVER. they have a regular menu of traditional soups including chicken noodle, clam chowder, beef stew plus a few rotating options that change with the seasons. the chilled soups and gazpacho are refreshing in the summer and nothing beats a hearty root veggie or squash bisque for fall. you just know time and labor went into perfecting their recipes because they have such wonderful flavor combinations with spices that marry divinely with fresh quality ingredients. there are new england soup factory locations closer to boston, but i especially love this one. the shop is cute and inviting with friendly employees who encourage you to sample different flavors. a bowl of their lobster bisque is my ideal "warm-me-up" break from a crisp fall day of museums and leaf peeping in salem.

I went with my boyfriend to Salem today and after mulling over a ton of options I thought soup was a great idea. The soup was a great idea! I can't say the chicken pot pie soup I had there was not bad, not bad at all! My boyfriend on the other hand, ordered a turkey and Havarti cheese roll up- he says it tasted like a "turkey and Havarti a**hole." I immediately asked for something else when he bit in and was not impressed by the non-fresh condiments and single piece of turkey. He ordered the chicken pot pie soup, same as me and thought it was A-Okay. It was definitely good. I however also made a mistake ordering the soup and salad combo- ughhhh. The garden salad had wrinkled veggies and was just ehhhh. So if you just want soup and or/a soda (Coke products here :) )... then it is good, otherwise don't waste your time AND MONEY!!!

winters in salem are slow, icy, and generally a bit nasty. and there's no greater cure than a visit to this little shop. they generally have about 7 or so soups, and are happy to let you sample until you find your cure for the shivers. service is wonderful, and the quality of the product is enough to have me revisit a couple times per week when it's below freezing. definitely worth the price. my favorite is probably the chicken vegetable, and then second the corn chowder. but they i've also tried their chicken pot pie, a few different split pea soups, and the italian stew. this is one of the few places that i can say i've never been disappointed in. enjoy.

WOW! This is a great place. I found it on Yelp while driving through New England on a cold rainy day. The selection of soups is unbelievable and everyone in my party of 5 women found something that suited them. The chicken pot pie was very unique and wonderful. The staff was eager to explain the menu and gave us samples. I'm not a big soup fan but this place has changed my mind. They are doing some remodeling on the facade and we would have never stepped inside if it hadn't been for the yelp review. The decor is simple and yet charming. There was a constant line of customers which didn't surprise us since the food was delicious.

So far I've tried the thai butternut squash soup...so good! And the chicken with matzo ball soup. If you're getting the chicken soup you must get it with the matzo ball, it's really good. And then they have this strawberry thing. It's fresh cut up strawberries and mint leaves. With a dip, I think it's sour cream, rum, sugar and cinnamon. Soooo yummy!

I stopped here one day while waiting to meet my sister, originally I was looking for a place to sit and read but I went in and it was so packed that was impossible to get a seat but since everything sounded so good I still ended up ordering some soup. Now I can't stop thinking about their soup! I'm so happy I stumbled onto this great place.

The soups here are great. I have had the chowder and the chicken noodle. Both are amazing. The chunks of chicken and veggies in the chicken noodle is to die for. The rolls are great as are the sandwiches. I have been here a few times and have never been disappointed. It is small, so its not a good place to go with a big group but it is great soup!

I hate that this is a chain restaurant, but otherwise I love it. I always get the same thing: chicken soup with a matzo ball and a little noodles. It's my ultimate comfort food. Case in point, it was the last thing I ate before I gave birth to my son and the first thing I ate the next day. Whenever I don't feel well, I always want this soup and, quite honestly, their matzo balls may even be better than my mom's...

  • Tara M.

We were very disappointed with quality of the food and the price. The soup was EXTREMELY salty (we will be drinking water all night) and the Caeser Salad had paper thin slivers of chicken that were so small I nearly drove back to demand a refund. We will not be returning to this place.

  • Missus F.

you can go in here on a 20 degree day, sit at the table directly in front of the door, and not get cold because it's so warm and cozy from all the soup. i'm an advocate of this place. i appreciate being able to sample soups before i commit, since there's a great selection. the worst thing about this place is that the soup is so hot that you have to wait a bit before eating... a fat kid's nightmare! when it finally cools off, it's heaven.

  • Colleen C.

delicious hot/cold soups served up with a smile. the owner and staff are helpful and friendly. very small, clean and cozy. when the rolls are fresh, it is a wonderful addition. the deli sandwiches look like they are made way ahead of time...stick with the soup; very filling.
