Solidly delicious pizza every time. I'm typically a pizza purist and prefer to eat a no-frills cheese pizza, but Engine House buffalo chicken pizza is hard to refuse. We have never had an issue with service or delivery, as it seems many other reviewers had, so theres that. Some of the best pizza I've found in eastern MA, for sure!

Came here for pizza and beer. Cashier/waitress nice enough. However, they serve their draft beer in a plastic cup. I am a beer purist so beer should be served in a proper glass.

Save yourself the headache. We ended up waiting 2 1/2 hours for 1 cheese pizza for delivery. I called 4-5 times and each time they said "he just left". Pizza was OK at best. I should of listened to the other yelp reviews.

Engine House has always been my favorite place to get a salad from. Fresh veggies, good dressing a homemade pita bread! But the last two times I've ordered have been a nightmare. The first mistake they made was sending a salad without dressing. I called, they said someone would come out with some dressing. I had to go out to a dance recital before it arrived but turns out it never came. My boyfriend was home all night. The next day, i called and they were super nice and credited me for the mix up. So we ordered again the next week. Well, our salads arrived without pita bread. I made a point to ask for dressing when I called and used the credit from the previous order. They did send out the pita bread but it was still pretty frustrating to have two mix ups! We probably will not be going back for awhile.

I love going up to Salem and meeting up with friends I have up there. The engine house is a great place to go if you want some good food and don't want to drop tons and tons of money. Dinners are under $10 bucks usually comes with a salad and the portions are great. Fountain drinks decently priced and you f=get a free refill. The waitstaff are very nice and they are attentive. They get busy and sometimes you have to wait a few extra mins but isn't very long. They do serve alcohol if you want a beer and such. Try the pizza as well bc its pretty good . They have good serve and the service is good too.

I've had pizza here a couple of times and while it is not the best thing I've eaten, it will do in a pinch. It is kind of a cheap NY slice place in Salem.

I live above this place. We order out from here often but never really go in to eat. Well, I took my daughter with me and ate in one day last week. The service was TERRIBLE! Two teenage girls jabbering the entire time about very personal topics for all the patrons to hear. The scatterbrained and "I clearly don't give a crap about my job" manager came in spouting off orders that made no sense, even to me as a customer and the employees made no effort to hide their distaste of him as soon as he left the room. A family beside me was so upset about how long their food was taking to come out that they were causing a scene. It was totally warranted! My food was to go (we had been sitting there for 15 mins) and they only brought my pizza out. I asked where the rest of my food was and was told they were out of fish (I had ordered a fish sandwich as well, plus 2 grilled cheeses and fries). They forgot to make my grilled cheese so I had to wait another 10 mins... They brought those out and then I asked where my fries were... Oh, forgot to make those as well! So after waiting another 5 mins for those, I left. The manager was out side BLOCKING TRAFFIC while he was unloading soda from the back of his beater and I complained to him. He replied that they must be having an off day and shrugged. No apologies. Nothing. He was so lousy. Literally did not care AT ALL. Well, we'll never order from there again. The pizza is ok but the rest of their food sucks. It's also nasty in there. Like, really nasty.

I have eaten in this restaurant two times. The first time I ate here I had pizza and it was fairly good. The restaurant is somewhat in disarray the benches need some help and the light globes are held together with tape. The second time we placed our order and waited at least 20 minutes before I went up to find out where our food was. The lady at the counter said, "you didn't get it yet?" About 5 minutes later then order came out and was incorrect. That required a redo. I had a dinner (chicken, broccoli and penne) that was recommended to me by the lady taking orders and it was canned products. Lousy sauce, frozen broccoli and watery noodles. I am not sure if this was an off night but I was not impressed and think I can find a better local place for pizza, etc. the next time I am looking for the next type of cuisine.

We used to LOVE this place! However, due to change of ownership I guess? They have gone WAY downhill. It's a great loss to us, and too many, many other people, I'm sure!

Although I usually trust the instincts of my fellow Yelpers, Engine House was recommended to me by someone I know, and being new to the area, I decided to check things out. I should have followed my gut. I wouldn't say this place is bad, I just didn't find anything outstanding about it. I don't mind that you order from the counter as soon as you arrive, but the menu is quite extensive so unless you know what you want right away, you awkwardly stand there while the counter folks stare at you. My husband and I just ordered simple pizzas and garlic bread. Although we knew the pizza would take about 25-30 minutes, we were willing to wait as we weren't completely starving. First came the garlic bread. I actually thought it was a joke. It was 2 long, slices that looked more like pickle spears than bread, and it tasted like I had taken some wonder bread and stuck it in the toaster. I wish I had taken a picture. The pizza wasn't bad, but the sauce was a little soupy and tasted a little too "herby". Again, I wouldn't say it was bad, but nothing jumped out and begged me to come back and make this place a regular spot. It was busy in there so obviously many people enjoy it, but with the variety of restaurants Salem offers, if I do come back I'll try something else.

Engine House has new owners... I am guessing they are the new people behind the counter, they never smile, never say hello, and they look like they don't want people / customers to "bother them". The pizza has changed, the pasta dishes have changed. This was our place to get food from... But, NO MORE... What a shame...

I LOVE this place! It's my favorite place in Salem for subs. Although their pizza and calzones are delicious too. I highly recommend their buffalo chicken calzone, Hawaiian pizza (with or without jalapenos)... can't really go wrong with anything you order from this place. The staff is always friendly and the service is fast.

What happened?? These guys used to be my go-to when I lived in Salem. I switched to them after Mandee's became too inconsistent and wished I had never ordered from somewhere else. Others have hinted that they've gone downhill in the past year, and I totally agree. The last few pizzas I've gotten from here have been under-cooked, wayy over-cheesed, and the dough paper-thin in places. Though the rest of the stuff on the menu still seems to be great (esp. the chicken fingers!), when anyone thinks of Engine House they think of pizza. I don't have any complaints about the staff - they're all friendly and helpful. I still love to go here, but I'm losing faith in the pizza quickly. This place is a Salem institution. Engine House and a PBR should be a national pastime, so I really hope they get it together soon. Plus I'm only one box coupon away from a free pizza!

  • Anthony R.

Wish there was less than 1 star! This place has gone down hill in the past year. It should receive 5 stars for the WORST counter staff ever. Every other order is a redo, the food quality is absolute crap! They staff will remake your food but who wants to wait for that? Trust me, go elsewhere! They should all be ashamed of themselves for destroying a Salem legacy!

I set myself up for a disappointment I suppose.. Looking at the outside, I felt that this place might just be a new staple location during our Salem visit. That being said, I was disappointed to say the least. I'll preface in stating that my pizzology include have locations all over RI, MA, and the better establishments in CT; and Engine House's pizza was a soft 6 out of 10. A little on the oily side and sauce lacked character. We had a large cheese. And a side of fries. I didn't bother to see if stays open until 1-2am, but this is the kind of pie that would hit the spot after an all night pub crawl... However, I'm a semi- new dad and new hubby, so pub-crawls are typically no longer on my itinerary. In all, with other better pizzerias in the area, I'll just say there are better options...

My favorite pizza restaurant on the north shore. Great hand tossed pizza and an always friendly helpful staff. The Fire Chief Special is my favorite pizza, though a plain cheese is great as well.

As soon as we walked in we were disappointed that it was uncomfortably cold! It set the tone for a slightly uncomfortable meal. When it's in the teens out turn up the heat, please. That said the pizza is pretty good. It's greasy wildly unhealthy but pretty freaking tasty. The yelp check in got me a free fountain drink with purchase however all drinks are only allowed one free refill. That alone gets one star taken away. It's not a bad restaurant we've been a few times now I just didn't like being cold. And with the amount of food we got limiting our refills made us feel like we were being nickel and dimed. If all you're concerned with is the food this is a great place to stop. If you're looking for an enjoyable experience maybe you should look elsewhere.

I went in with a group of students for lunch. They were very friendly and patient with all my students while they ordered. All of the food was great too! I ordered a Greek salad with grilled buffalo chicken. It came with delicious bread and plenty of feta cheese. It was just the way I liked it.

We walked in on a Friday night and ordered a small mushroom pizza and two beers. I've eaten a lot of pizza in my day, and this was one of the best I've ever had. I'm not being paid by Engine House to write this, but if I was I would request to be paid in pizza. I cannot comment on delivery or any other menu items.

UPDATED!!! From one star to 5 star. My husband went in to see the owner, Paul, and he was extremely accommodating. He heard my husband out, offered us a free pizza with whatever we wanted on it, and let us know that one of the players in this whole debacle was no longer with the company. I hope it was the "manager" Chris, because by watching him for a half hour while I waited for my pizza, and then witnessing him work again when I stopped in to see if I had left my wallet there, I could tell he didn't have the customer service skills to manage a restaurant that's looking to keep repeat customers. After our experience, with Paul, we will certainly return, as the pizza is NY style, and once I get a hot one, I'm sure it'll be delicious. Thank you Paul! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I waited for 30 minutes standing, waiting for my pizza to be called out to take it out. Turns out the one I had been staring at the whole time was mine, and they offered it to me cold. I asked if I could get a fresh one, but then told her I'd just take the one because I had no more time to wait. She apologized, told me she'd get me a fresh pie, to write down my number and they'd call me. Well, they never called and when I called them they refused to make good on the deal. They offered me 10% off and basically told me to screw off. We'll be calling the owner in the morning on the principle that I took the pizza to not makes waves and because I was offered a free pizza. So we'll see if they make good on it - but if they don't one star is one star too much. Assholes. The pizza was fine but takes WAY too long - everyone sitting there was waiting like 30-40 minutes for pizzas and I kept hearing them tell people delivery time was over an hour. They should get over themselves - the pizza isn't good enough to make up for the idiots running the place.

This place caught our eye in Salem and thought it would be an original new pizza place..the inside is nothing special. Their pizza is not the best around but It's not the worst either..

Unfortunately the good pizza here is negated by the fact that they are completely incompetent. I used their online ordering, and was told 40 minutes until delivery (7:20 pm.) An hour later I called and asked where the food was. I was told the driver left 20 minutes ago and should be right there. 15 minutes later I called back and was told again the driver would be there any second. 15 minutes later after that I called and cancelled my order. It was 9:00. The person on the phone said, "You know she is going to be there any second right?" Well considering she had my food in the car for well over an hour it is probably cold. The food is expensive enough. I don't want soggy fries and cold pizza. Next time I'll stick to someone who actually delivers.

Decent pizza, would recommend to anyone to just try. Only down sure is that there is nothing that makes this place stand out from other pizzerias in town, just most convenient at time.

I have made the mistake of eating here for the last time. When I first started working downtown, Engine House seemed like a viable place to do business, and snag lunch from every once in a while. Originally, the food was definitely of par, but it's the service that really gets me. A few months back I ordered two pizzas to be delivered to my home, while I was at work. I figured I would race the delivery driver to my house, and have time to have lunch with my father (who was waiting for me til I got out of work) on my break. Obviously, I won the race...by FORTY MINUTES. That means that for two small pizzas and a 2 liter, I waited a solid hour and fifteen minutes for a delivery that is literally a straight shot up Lafayette St. When I got the pizzas, they were cold, partially burnt, and looked like they were tossed around in the back seat before they even thought about delivering them to me. The total came to $26 (ridiculous on it's own), but I told the driver I wasn't paying full price and left him a $20. Upset, I bothered again to give them another try. I ordered a buffalo chicken sub, with bacon and cheese, but all I got was a regular, plain chicken sub. When I came back to return it, they told me they charged me for a large sub and a pizza, for no reason whatsoever. I was refunded, but still PISSED. I didn't even want a sub that was made correctly, they completely lost my business. However... More recently, I called ahead to tell them I wanted two slices of cheese pizza. A fairly simple order, but they STILL managed to screw it up. They told me it would be ready in five minutes, so I showed up in ten. When I got there, they said it still wasn't ready, because they literally just put it in the oven. Despite what I had to say about them, I still went ahead and gave them business again for a single slice of pepperoni pizza. When I got in to get it, I stood in line (with nobody in front of me) watching the girl behind the counter mow down on some kind of sub, who tried talking to me asking what I wanted. I told her twice the same, stupidly simple pepperoni pizza slice order, but for whatever reason she could not remember for her life what I said. The cook in the back heard me, and once she finally swallowed her last bit I got my pizza. When I went back to work to chow down, I noticed a big pool of grill grime that my cheese had melted into, and a few lovely blotches of burned dough on the bottom. Needless to say I didn't eat it, and wasted yet again another couple of bucks at Engine House Salem. Don't waste your time here, they thrive on screwing up.

Even this New Yawka must admit that this place makes one helluva damn good pie! I used to frequent Salem and while I was there, we always ordered pizza. I have had some of the other places but for me, Engine House pizza is the best pizza in the area. Great stuff!

I was on a recent business trip and popped into this place with a friend. Met the new owner - nice guy. The decor was okay (he said they were going to remodel soon) but the pizza and the steak & cheese sandwich were excellent.... I highly, highly recommend this place...!!

This has been my pizza joint ever since I moved to Salem a year ago. I find the pizza tastes really great and the slices are pretty big for the large pizza. Two topping large costs about $12.25 which you cant beat. I wish the ham wasn't a specialty item though. We've never had an issue with the delivery but we prefer to stop in and pick it up. Never had a problem with any of the staff however they usually get our name wrong on our order when calling it in ahead of time so there are a few times when we would have to do a little investigative work. Normally this would be a problem but my girlfriend usually calls it in and her name can be hard to understand over the phone. The subs aren't bad and the chicken tenders were REALLY good! Nice thick tenders with really good breading. This place loves to give weekly offers on Facebook and they have a punch card awards program that could get you a free large pizza and coupons on the box if you collect 10 of you get a free large cheese pizza. It's pretty hard to go against that. We eat here almost weekly and it hasn't let us down yet!

Well, i'm not gonna lie- I do like their Pizza. However, they some of the biggest jerks in salem on their staff. last weekend, my husband and I ordered a pizza from there. about 20 minutes later the delivery girl shows up and buzzes the door. I came down to answer a minute later and she was trying to call my cell phone on her cell phone. when I answered, she said "oh, I just tried to call you" and stuck her cell phone in her pocket. Well, apparently she didn't turn it off. So after a brief pleasant chat with her, I came upstairs with our pizza and a few minutes later my phone beeped like I had a message. For the next 10 minutes, I listened to her (and what must have been her boyfriend) conversation in her car. It went something like this: Idiot Boyfriend (here by known as IBF): "So was it some black guy that answered the door?" (I live in the point) Engine House Delivery Girl (here by known as EHDG): "No, it was some fat white girl" (now i'm not skinny by any stretch of imagination, but she works as a pizza delivery girl and was wearing a scrubby sweatshirt and was at least 50lbs overweight herself) IBF: "Is this root beer?" EHDG: "Yeah, it was free so shut up. It's funny how you know what someone is going to look like when you drive up to their house" IBF: "I know. Hahahaa" EHDG: "Remember that one white house that I told you about where I know the guy kills little kids" IBF: "yeah, that guy is a creep" This conversation went on for about 10 minutes, until she pulled up to her next delivery house and realized her phone was on. I'm furious that I gave her a tip. Tip to Engine House: fire your rude staff and your pizza would taste much better.

I ordered a large-size pizza today from here after hopping between a lot of options and was hoping that it would be good. After I ordered online, I saw my total $17.12 and the email confirmation also affirmed that. However, when the girl came to deliver the pizza she demanded an amount 19.12 and had a receipt for the same too. Anyways I had to give her $20 and when I expected her to return the change, she just walked away. I was a little bit surprised since I have never seen people do that here. Anyways, I thought atleast the pizza must be worth 20 bucks. But, yikes, it just turned out one of the worst ones I have ever had. The crust was very much just dough, not roasted properly at all and so were the veggies on it. Please find some other better Pizza house if you care for your money!

Here's the thing: I usually like local joints! But as much as I tried to enjoy my meal here, the Engine House seemed determined to get just a single star. The staff completely lost our order, so it took over an hour before the food finally came. Thank goodness they comped everything, because the food itself sure wasn't of a quality worth paying for. The locals seem to like this place so maybe we just came in on an off night, but in any case we'll be passing the Engine House by in the future.

Very clean! You can watch the pizza being made through a window on the Main Street. This means you can see the kitchen and thankfully, it is spotless. The tiny dining area was also scrubbed clean. Huge slices! One was almost the size of a small pizza, enough for me for lunch. It wasn't the best pizza I've ever had, but the crust was thin and crispy, which I like. Staff was very friendly. I will definitely be back.

This is our go to pizza place in Salem. Fast and friendly service, delicious simple pizzas. It's nothing fancy but the prices are right. I still haven't tried the subs, salads, etc. I'm all about the pizza!

The pizza here is fair food. Better than that of papa gino's, but it is no Flatbread Pizza. Overall pretty yummy and satisfying when you are in the mood for your traditional pizza. _____________________________________________________ My only major complaint is that last night my boyfriend and I ordered calzones from here and we asked for a delivery. My boyfriend said the street and our order very slowly and deliberately. We specifically said Beverly (doesn't sound anything like Salem) She said the order back to us and it was all correct and told us our total was $36.49 Problem 1: 15 minutes later we get a call from the girl asking what town we live in. We say Beverly and she says that the Engine House doesn't deliver to Beverly (Would have been nice if she was paying attention in the first place) So my boyfriend told her we would come pick it up. Problem 2: After he got off the phone, he told me she was unenthusiastic about hearing that we were willing to come pick it up. (Never thought picking up food that employees worked hard to put together could be a bad thing) Problem 3: When we went to go pick it up. My boyfriend purchased the food and got handed a pizza box and for a little while he stood around, so the girl asked "Did you order something else?" /Yes why else would he be standing there. Did I mention, this girl was the same one that took his order. Problem 4: When we got home we had our calzones and both of our calzones had toppings that were missing. We ordered a four topping calzone and got a two topping calzone instead, and with the wrong toppings. We were still charged $36.49.

Pizza is great. In my top 3 for North Shore. The cheesesteak sub was one of the worst things I have eaten in a long time. Bland meat and cold bread. No love given to making it. Completely the opposite of a Papa Gino's cheesesteak that I had a few days later. Seems strange given how awesome the EH pizza is. Staff has always been friendly. Love the atmosphere and location.

This is strictly a pizza review for Engine House. The pizza is good but it's just a little to greasy. I also really wish they had jalapenos or a spicy sausage to add some kick to their pies. For some reason, grilled chicken is considered a specialty topping and costs an extra $2.50. Having said all that, the people are very friendly and the pizza is quite affordable. A large two-topping pizza is only $12.25. They are also really active in Salem, which is always great to see. I will definitely continue to support Engine House Pizza.

Ahhh...the old Engine House. Great place in Downtown Salem to come have a cheap beer and some pizza. They do have a full menu with north shore sub shop style grub, but you might want to stick with the pizza. A very distinct pie; it falls somewhere in between Boston "North End" style pizza and that greasy pizza from your childhood you just can't get enough of. They supposedly use a special kind of mozzerella cheese, and it does taste pretty damn good. Real chewy. And sometimes if you're lucky you get a couple big bubbles from the crust coming through the cheese...mmm... This is a definite must try for any out of towners. Skip the Upper Crust and come have a slice or five here. Oh yeah, they also deliver and they do have real good fresh chicken fingers, if that's your thing. Cluck cluck!

Its good pizza for downtown Salem. Service is a bit slow, I been here several times and constantly we wait for our food. I do understand Pizza takes a bit of time to cook but it seems slow.

a strictly pizza/sub shop that has beer on tap? sold. PLUS keno? be still my heart. I wish so very much that this place would transport itself to Quincy, MA. the pizza is great, and i pretty much enjoyed everything about it. go here!

  • Josh T.

It's a good, solid pizza and has been one of the town favorites for years. The other menu items are good and the portions generous. The subs in particular are usually very good - this is my favorite cheese steak in Salem. Eating in there is a lot of fun - nice ambiance for a sub shop and you can get a beer with your meal. Also nice. The downside is that over the last few years the quality has been inconsistent - once in a while now we'll get a real clunker of a pizza or meal from them. Still well worth eating there despite that risk, but they've been a safer choice!

  • Julie H.

I like this place. It gets busy when Salem is busy (like around Halloween) and you can't get close to this place. So try to go anytime other than in the fall. They have draft beer and good pizza. Worth stopping here if you're in the area. Parking is always a B***** in Salem, so you might have to drive around for a while and walk, but you'll eat so much that you might get to burn some of the calories off! YUM!

Good Pizza, Cheap Prices and Speedy Service; that's what I experienced when I went to Engine House a couple of weeks ago. No complaints. I would definitely go back there for quick bite to eat.

Engine House is favorite lunch spot in Salem. The pizza is served steaming hot and piled high with cheese. The sauce isn't too sweet and the crust is perfectly crunchy. We usually stick to the basics of sausage or pepperoni, but even their buffalo chicken is delicious with a side of bleu cheese dressing for dipping. The staff is pretty friendly and pizzas are made fresh to order. You can buy drinks (soda or beer) by the glass or the pitcher. If it's warm out, I suggest taking your pizza to go and having a picnic down by the water. Bring extra napkins!

  • Kate G.

This place is so tasty. The pizza has a wonderful just spiced right sauce and the cheese is savory and bubbly. The staff is super friendly and the price cannot be beat especially since the location sits in the center of where all the tourist trap places are. You can't get a better 10 dollar large pizza in the area. They also have scratch tickets and great weekday specials to save you some extra dough. Definitely make this your easy, cheap, and tasty dining option if you are in the area and don't want to spend an arm and a leg for great food.

Solid pizza joint. Pizza was pretty good and service wasn't bad. This place claims to have the best pizza in Salem, I would have to balk at that. Good pizza for sure, but the prices are a little high and no delivery unless you get catering.

Um. Engine House: $3.07 for a slice? Puhleeeze. Forget the 100% hike (!?!) but the .07?! No need! All over Salem, restaurants are robbing people for shitty food. There is also a trend of $11-$12 hamburgers. What?! Bell Verona and Seaport Cafe are the only restaurants with unique character, menu wise. Everything else? Bland. Lame. Uninspiring. I'll pay robbery rates if the food is.... good. Just saying.

Great cheesy thin crust Italian style pizza! They also have slices at all times. Typical sub and pizza place and the atmosphere appropriately matches. They also have beer, sports on TV, and Keno for those interested.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! While I like one of your competitors and was looking forward to them tonight....THEY FAILED! I waited an hour and 45 minutes. Called them two times. No pizza. Found out they thought I was picking up. Why if I was calling? You all delivered in 15-20 minutes after hearing my story AND....you were less expensive, same pizza toppings. YOU ALL ARE GREAT! Many thanks. Too bad it tool almost 2.5 hours for my dinner. I should have called you first!!!

First time visiting, ordered had a large pepperoni pizza.. Too dry, needs more sauce.. But I will go back to try something else instead : /

You want pizza in Salem go to the engine house. There pizza is simple and to the point. Friendly people with great decor or fire department related gear and junk. The place is near and dare to me. My late father used to take the family there. I havent really tried anything else but there pizza and there buffalo chicken calzone(da bomb) . All these haters don't know good pizza. Let the haters hate on Yelp but the engine house is a great place for some pizza.

I'm sad I had waited so long to try Engine House. I went into Engine House and found myself in a quaint pizza shop with booths, bar tables, a couple tv's, and beer. Oh yes. The green pepper and onion pizza is my favorite! I also enjoy the fried zucchini sticks but I always have to ask for marinara sauce because they serve them with a horseradish sauce for dipping. The service is typically good. I have been here about half a dozen times and have never left unhappy.

This is one of the best pizza shops in the world, with fantastic service, fountain drinks, beer & T.v. for watching all the great Boston Sports Teams; while enjoying the Best #1 Pizza IN SALEM; as i write this email, i'm waiting for a delivery of Engine House to my work in Salem, can not wait for the tasty pizza to arrive, take my advise, on many things it is not good to offer blind advise, but this is the best pizza shop in Salem.... note that i am customer, live in Salem for five years and can say without hesitation this is a fantastic pizza shop keep up the great work at manufacturing the most delicious pizza in this historic City that is my home, until Ecuador in July God Bless America & GOOGLE

I get takeout from here regularly and they never disappoint. I waver between here and Upper Crust depending on whether I want fancy thin crust (Upper Crust) or just good quality Italian pizza (Engine House). Slices are great if you're in a rush, Pizza is always good. Mozz sticks are just OK, Cheese steaks are yummy, as is Chicken Parm sub. I don't do delivery, just had too many bad experiences with too many places, but for takeout, Engine House is top notch.

I am not a big pizza fan...it takes a lot to impress me, and I have to say that the pizza at Engine House is VERY good. Crispy, flavorful crust with fresh and tasty toppings. The cheese was good quality and my peperoni wasn't greasy. The young folks working there weren't very friendly, but they got the job done. The place itself is kinda bland with lousy seating and they had 60 Minutes on the TV; not exactly great fare for a pizza joint, IMO. So, for all that they lose a point...but the pizza itself was excellent. I'll certainly be picking up pizza there in the future.

good salads, fries, and chicken parm subs, bad everything else. Their meatball subs are disgusting.. I couldn't even finish it when I tried. Everything else here I've tried has been mediocre at best. Their pizza is worse than almost every other place is Salem and the people here are incredibly crude. If you want a good sub there are plenty of other places to go (Niko's, Dina's, Mandee's, etc) Strangely enough there aren't many good pizza shops in Salem. Crusty's is good, but I think their only open in the spring and summer. Mandee's is also good, but has bad service. If you want a real treat than take a drive over to Beverly's Little Italy. Avoid this place at all costs.

Seriously I love Engine House. I love Engine House so much that after 23 hours of labor, 2 hours of sleep, and 9 hours of constant visitors... when the fiance asked what I wanted to eat the first words from my mouth were "the biggest pizza you can get from Engine House!" We used to come here when we first started dating 8 years ago. Back then you could still smoke inside of establishments. So you could order a pitcher of beer, a large pizza and have a smoke in between. So much fun. The pizza is awesome! It isn't the typical Greek-style pizza you will find at the local townie shops. It's real Italian-style pizza. Haven't tried anything else from there... I'm a bit obsessed with their pizza.

I love Engine House! I live in Cali and every time I come to visit Salem, I must have a meatball sub or the Italian sub. Pizzas are great here as well. But I love this place.

I've been going here for years, even before I moved to Salem. It's a good place to grab a bite when you're out with friends--it's open late (for Salem), they serve beer, and there's sports on the TVs. The pizza is good, not incredible, but good. It's more of a "traditional" pizza, not "gourmet" like Upper Crust. They've also got subs and Italian "plates," which are OK, not as good as the pizza. Good fries though.

I used to grab a slice here once in a while, so when my favorite calzone place was closed I decided to give them a try. The plus: they have ricotta cheese, which, for some reason, a lot of places in the area don't. The negative: everything else. I ordered a spinach calzone with ricotta and mozzarella cheese. The large calzone that I got was cold, tiny, and had hardly any spinach in it. In addition, the cheese wasn't melted. It was pretty gross.

one of the best pizza places in Salem and the local area. Get the meat lovers and a draft beer and you're in for a good cheap night out - seating is a little limmited inside, but they do a ton of takeout as well

Yikes! The quality of the pizza I had tonight was awful. They skimped out on the crust.I asked for extra sauce they ignored it, I ordered two toppings and it literally looked like they tossed a small amount of it on one quarter of the pizza. It was my fault to not look at the pizza before bringing it home. After years of going there with a heavy heart I think I will have to seek a new place nearby for my pizza needs.

the three stars are because it's a sub shop that sells beer. they actually have some good beers on tap, too. other than that, this is a standard, slightly-above-sub-par sub/pizza shop. you can't beat the fact that you can get a slice of pizza and a beer for under five bucks, but you can get better pizza elsewhere. the subs are normal. they don't excel. the salads are alright. it's a pile of lettuce with maybe two slices of tomato and some onions and some olives out of a can that my boyfriend says don't taste too great. i don't think olives taste too great ever so he's a better judge. the only reason i think the salads are alright is because this is probably the closest to a good antipasto salad i've had in salem thus far. the best antipasto salads come from leonardo's in gloucester and i'm having a REALLY HARD TIME finding a proper substitute but i'm going to continue to give it the old college try. for some reason i like random italian meats rolled up on top of my lettuce. i would never eat any of these italian meats separately in any way, might i add, but holy CRAP, do i love a good antipasto salad. the fries were just fries. nothing really stands out. the atmosphere was okay and the service was more than decent.

I think this place deserves 4 stars for it's "delivery-style" pizza. It's quite tasty and relatively inexpensive. I think it's the sauce that makes this pizza :)

I was very disappointed with the Engine House pizza I ordered for lunch. It was the Fire Chief Special Large. It was supposed to come with anchovies, but one never even swam thru the sauce, the ham was bland, the green peppers raw, the onions raw, the cheese barely ok. I have had better pizzas in Salem from Dominos

Unbelievable pizza and sandwiches. Great location -- within walking distance to Commuter Rail, Pickering Wharf and touristy stuff. Pretty cheap too. Stay away from the barbeque sauce fries. I know, right?

I've never had pizza so good! If there was a Boston pizza, this is it. It's the perfect mix. Between thin crust and Chicago, crispy and flavorful. The counter service was what you would expect from an old mom n pop pizza joint- honest and to the point, yet proud. Selection is huge, hours so conveinent and ingrdients clearly all fresh. You totally can't go wrong. I don't know why you would complain- your going to get everything you could want from a small town sub shop, take it for what it is and enjoy.

If I was in college still and I needed at steak bomb or emergency pizza at 10pm to feed my mind or munchies, this place would be my jam. They serve pitchers of beer, the place has an odour of pizza and deep frier greese, and is surrounded by firehouse memorabilia. There are tables and booths with hanging lamps for eating in and slices are always available for on the go. Pizza is Italian style and decent because it isn't made by Greeks! I will say that my pizza was over done and the crust was so crunchy that it was like Motza. (This could be also due to the fact that we were late picking it up). I've had slices and they were much better. Overall a good sub and pizza shop on the northshore. Not the place you take a date to, but the place you order pizza in from.

More popular than ever, it can be a little hard to find a place to sit here on a Friday or Saturday night in the evening. Nevertheless, it usually doesn't disappoint; the pizza is a known quantity, not gourmet, but solid and you always know what you are going to get. Price reflects the value.

--- your typical pizza place with sports on the t.v. and your once in a while nice* counter help... cheap - open late - things to remember: they will only serve you 1 pitcher of beer ( this is the truth folks)

  • Zachary A.

Great place for a pitcher and beer. Pizza is the best in Salem.....probably my favorite in Mass next to Santarpios. Pretty basic subs and pasta dished but everything is super cheap.

  • Kathryn M.

Generic pizza place atmosphere, dim lighting and expect to leave smelling like grease. My second favorite pizza in town, but its only good piping hot. If you're getting the same drink as someone in your group you might as well buy a pitcher. The radio is on as well as two TVs on two different stations at all times. Sometimes two radio stations too. So if any of the programming annoys you its easy to block out.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
