I've been coming to this place for years now. I grew up with Su Chang's being the place to order when we wanted Chinese food. The food is delicious and not greasy. They're also very quick. The people that greet you are always smiling and welcoming. I have an hour lunch break at work- I meet my parents and sister. We have water, tea, soup, and we each order a combination plate ordered from the lunch menu which is cheap. The total bill is about $30. They also make sure your cup of water is always filled to the top. I highly recommend this place. You won't be disappointed!

Picked up takeout and we were sorely disappointed. Out of everything we ordered nothing tasted as good and fresh as it normally does. My wife had ordered chicken and broccoli and there was a bone in it. We threw everything out after that.

We have been passing Su Chang's for years on our drive to a nearby mall, but it was never the right time for dinner. Tonight, we made plans to go, and so glad we did. The food was fresh, delicious, and delivered quickly (although we were there before the dinner rush). Our 11 yo son chose beef teriyaki skewers and Peking ravioli (dumplings). Both were good, but the ravioli were a standout. Homemade wrappers thick enough to hold a generous portion of pork. They were the most "stuffed" dumplings we've ever had. My husband and I shared the spicy green beans and the Hunan style pork. We really enjoyed both. The service was friendly and we really enjoyed our meal. Only two tiny drawbacks. Our waiter could not tell us the ingredients in the mai tai and the pineapple served at the end was canned. Minor complaints for an otherwise great meal. We will be back.

This was some of the best Chinese food that I have had in a long time. The boneless ribs were hot and delicious strips tightly packed in the container. The crab ragoon was crispy with plenty of filling. The egg foo young was perfectly cooked with crispy edges and plenty of sauce on top. The chicken wings were fried fresh. The chicken fried rice was fresh, full of flavor and lots of chicken. The brown rice was cooked just right and not gooey at all. My favorite dish was the Chow Foon noodles with seafood. It was full of squid, scallops and shrimp with vegetables and soft small squares of noodles in a light sauce. My grandmother was especislly fond of this dish too. I ordered chinese broccoli and they made it for me even though it is not on the menu. I had it with garlic sauce and everyone raved about how delicious it came out. My grandfather liked the orange chicken. They were nice to put the sauce on the side so that we could add it as needed. I only wished we had eaten there. The restaurant is beautiful and the staff were accomodating. Celebrating with my grandparents who will be married 76 years this month was priceless. I couldn't have asked for better food. Thank you to the loal Yelpers for reviewing this place. I doubt there is a close second in the local area.

Honestly the best Chinese food around. Blows Kowloon and Mandarin away. Wonton soup is divine. Food has authentic taste and the restaraunt has an authentic atmosphere. The water cup fillers are on point and you will never run out. Also, the owner is super nice and comes around to check on your food. Give it a try, I guarantee you will come back!

Food is yummy! Service is friendly! My new go to Chinese restaurant since I'm now disgusted with Green Tea. If only they got dessert tho, like maybe some green tea fried ice cream, that would've been a 5 star!

Best Americanized-Chinese food in the area! Ambiance and service is 5 star-worthy. While many review servers as "rushed" I found them very attentive and polite- my water glass never dipped below half full. The prices are very reasonable especially given the value of the venue and service. I've gone to this restaurant many times and have never been disappointed. I would recommend for either a quick bite for a few or a large dinner party!!

Food is amazing! Full bar! The older gentleman behind the bar is a riot! What more could you ask for?! Go here for really good, strong drinks and even better Chinese food! It can't be beat in the north shore!

Su Chang's has the best Chinese in the area. The service is great and the atmosphere is comfortable. My husband and I often visit the bar for a nice cocktail and we are never pressured to leave. The bartenders are extremely accommodating and make outstanding drinks. Recently I ordered a strawberry Daiquiri which was simply delicious. The wonton soup is always fresh and tasty! The beef teriyaki and other scrumptious appies are amazing and excellent, at every visit. I highly recommend Su Chang's, a great neighborhood comfortable bar/restaurant without hesitation. Cheers!

I moved to peabody about 3 years ago and have been looking for good chinese. All the places in peabody are decent at best. Just tried su changs for the first time and it was delicious!! They even used the little baby corns in their lomein and chicken with veggies. I havent seen a place use those in a while! Every thing was fresh and tasted amazing! We went around 5pm, we were seated right away, and our food was ready incredibly fast!! The restraunt was clean and the waiters were friendly and checked on our table frequently..On top of that the price was good. We ordered spare ribs, lobster sauce, wonton soup,lo mein, rice, chicken with veggies and two cokes our total was around $50. Not to mention we left with enough left overs for tonight and lunch tomorrow. Definitly recommend this restaurant!!

Positively superb Chinese food. My wife and I just moved to the NorthShore and have been looking for a decent Chinese restaurant. Most are fair but nothing like what we were used to getting in Chinatown when we lived in downtown Boston. This place is clean, the staff is incredibly friendly and engaging and the food is excellent. The Wonton soup is how I can typically tell how a Chinese restaurants food is going to taste, these guys nail it. Light, super flavorful broth with excellent wontons, strips of pork and bok choy. We have tried the Peking Duck which is excellent, the Shrimp with peapods is excellent, the string beans with ground pork is superb. Appetizers are excellent however the hot appetizer platter is a bit pricey. Go with a big group so you can try a number of different items. We went with 12 people and got a good sampling of several dishes. Every dish we had was excellent here, its become our new favorite on the North Shore after a year of searching, and search we did! No wonder they are always busy!

My family took me here for my birthday and unfortunately we asked a few people if reservations were necessary before we came and we were told no, but, when we got there, we were then told that reservations were recommended so I advise to anyone going at night to call ahead as we waited approximately 45 minutes between trying to find a park and waiting for a table of 7. The bartender took a long time to serve us while we were waiting so I was not pleased about that. The staff could use a little help in being extra warm and friendly but they weren't bad or very very good. After being seated I must say the service was very prompt and the food we ordered came out without a long delay especially as we ordered at least 8 dishes. Everything was good including the peking duck which usually takes a while and not a lot of restaurants can offer this. My favorite was the spicy beef but everything was quite good and it was a most enjoyable dinner. For the price, I'd say to was a bargain given the ambience of the place. Absolutely would go back again!!!!!!

This is the best choice for dining Chinese on the North Shore that I am aware of. Service is terrific. Food fresh and really tastey. The Hot & Sour soup is the best since Weylui's went out of business. Atmosphere is upscale from the typical Chinese restaurant. Price is reasonable. Selections are typical, but quality is great. This is a must for a great dining experience of Chinese.

If this is the best, or even one of the best, Chinese restaurants on the north shore, I don't foresee eating Chinese in the area anymore. We ordered take out, so we didn't interact with the staff much, but what little we did, they were very nice and that aspect was just fine. The food was pretty much standard quick Americanized Chinese food - for half the price, in the middle of the night, I'm sure a drunk college student would be very happy. For what we paid for it though, this was pretty boring. My General Gau's chicken specified sauteed red peppers came with the meat, but they were completely absent, it was just meat in sauce. My husband ordered beef with tangerine, and while I wasn't surprised to not see chunks of tangerines in there or anything like that, there wasn't even a hint of citrus to the sauce. Both dishes were supposed to be crispy, allegedly, neither was - I can allow for some softening while we drove home (a 5 minute drive) but I would think there would be *some* texture left, there was not. We also ordered the green beans, on the recommendation of some reviews on here. I was glad we got them, so there was at least some form of vegetable involved in our meal. They were not nearly as transcendentally incredible as was stated though - just very overcooked green beans in a lot of syrupy sauce. Not like "they cooked extra while we were getting them home" overdone, but more like they'd sat under a heat lamp for six hours overcooked. Also, it's my own fault for not reading closely enough, but none of the meals come with rice. That has to be ordered separately, which we did not realize, so we didn't get any. Not a big deal, but a bit of a bummer, especially considering the prices. I guess I'm spoiled by places that at least include one order of white rice, but again, that was my own fault for assuming.

I usually judge a Chinese resto based on the quality of their hot & sour soup. Su-Chang's is spicy with enough sour to counter the pepper. One of the best ever.

  • Lawrence C.

Su Chang is pretty good. I like the scallion ginger sautee lobster. taste good and good cooking. all shell are cracked and cut into small pieces. Onion pancake is good also. its deep fry flavor vs the regular pan fry flavor. Overall is pretty good as a Chinese restaurant in a sub urban area. I will say the China town restaurant is better in term of taste. but China town is almost one hour away Peabody

The food was good* shoulder shrug* waiter jack was very pushy and in a rush...took plates while still chewing mid bite for apps...food was delivered in an expedited manner yet the waiter made it seem like we were holding another table of patrons up yet resturant was moderately full with an abundance of available tables. Pan fried noodles come with an overwhelming amount of bean sprouts yet lacking meat/poultry. Crisp beef with tangerine was to die for it is a must have. Crab Rangoon very fresh tasting and many to indulge on per single order. General Gao chicken could have used an extra kick of spice yet was decent. Spring rolls were very good but serving size was 2 so stock up. Drinks were very inexpensive yet very delicious so stock up on those too LOL!!! The woman the owner, made a point to greet each guest at each table which is a big plus in my book

Some of the best Americanized Chinese you can find in the North Shore. We made a reservation for 15 for a birthday celebration. We we're sat in the back room right away. The staff were very attentive and patient while we decided what to order for our entire party and especially when we asked 2-4 times for them to turn the temperature of the room up/down. We ordered quite a few menu items for the table. The crab rangoon were one of the best I've ever had. It's nice to actually see crab in your crab rangoon. The lemon shrimp is labeled as a "special" as it should be. I wasn't sold by the description but after tasting it I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not one for spare ribs but I did notice that Su Chang's "Hot Plate" includes the spare ribs on the bone and not the lesser spare ribs strips. All the standard fare here takes one big step up from your favorite takeout spot.

My husband and I eat a lot at Su-Chang. The best Chinese food around. Waiters are nice. The owner even nicer. The portions are big. We always take home a doggy bag. The prices are good too. In all no complaints. Love it!!

With tons of Chinese restaurants out there Su-Chang's is special because their food always taste fresh and very good. Something to say about the Cantonese style of cooking. They are certainly paying attention to what people want and expect. Prices are reasonable, service is good and the establishment is always clean!

A lot of people say this is the best "Chinese food" on the North Shore, although I would note a few caveats: - there are more "Chinese restaurants" in the US than there are Wendy's, McDonald's and Burger King's combined - "Chinese food" in the US is more American than ... hamburgers. - most of this stuff is very Americanized So for authentic Chinese food, I usually go elsewhere (like Sichuan Garden, Woburn or Sichuan Cafe, Framingham or Chinatown ... mostly Cantonese-style though). However, based on "Americanized Chinese food", Su-Chang's is okay to good. It's the sister restaurant to Royal East in Cambridge, owned by the same people and the same menu. I usually like their crispy salt and pepper pork and tangerine beef. Consistent quality of food. Pretty good service. Very clean.

  • Jow O.

Really good "Chinese food" on the North Shore. Why the "quote" you ask? Well, if you've had real Chinese food you would know. 1 star for service 1 star for friendliness 1 star for cleanliness 1 star for overall value Would definitely come back. Hard to find a nice, clean tasty and friendly chinese food spot!

Read the reviews for this restaurant on Yelp and decided to give it a shot. The outside of the place is very pretty, looks like a very big house. The parking lot was very big but DARK at night. The car parked to me had kids hanging out when we left and a guy was sitting on the roof of the car. I'll have what he was having.... The restaurant has carpet that looks like it belongs in a banquet hall. The walls are VERY WHITE and lack much art or decorations and they have sheer white curtains. The place had a very blah look and a bit of color would help in my opinion. Being more serious, let's talk about the food. I went with my mom and we shared a few items which we get at all Chinese restaurants in an effort to rank them from one place to the next. We were very surprised that they DO NOT have egg rolls on the menu, only spring rolls. We ordered: Hot Tea and Water were brought over the minute we sat and the tea was very good. It was not watered down. Hot and Sour Soup which was very flavorful with good color but was a bit overwhelming in palette heat. I didn't finish it as my eyes were watering somewhat. My mom had the Wonton Soup and thought that is was very good. The broth was a light yellow color and she liked it. Chicken with Broccoli with non spicy brown sauce. This dish was pretty good and was a very large sized portion. We both liked this dish and thought that it was comparable to the flavor at Mandarin Danvers. However. the portion size was larger while the price was only $2 more if that. I took the leftovers home and enjoyed them cold out of the fridge later that night. The restaurant had Lemon Shrimp listed so we asked if they could do Lemon Chicken. The server said OK and I will tell you this dish was terrible. It was sticky and so sweet that I felt it in my teeth. My mom felt that she got a hint of the lemon flavor but I can't say that I did. Maybe that was because I was still dealing with the heat in my mouth from the soup. Again, the portion was a good size and we took the left overs home. When I went to go eat it later the honey was so thick that it actually tasted sweeter. I was not a fan of this dish and would not order it again if we came back. We saw several tables getting a dish while we were there and though that it must have been the fried wontons which I love so we ordered them to go. When I opened them at home I realized this is NOT what everyone was ordering and figured it must have been the crab ragoon. These were greasy but pretty good. I liked the flavor and I think that we had between 8 and 10 in the container. I would go back again but still think that Mandarin Danvers is a better bang for the buck with less "style" and a slightly smaller portion size.

Clean Chinese restaurant with more modern decor including white tablecloths. The restaurant looks like a house. Tried their spareribs, the Yang Chow fried rice, Chicken vegetable fried rice noodles, and pot stickers. Everything tasted fine and a little more authentic. Good service.

This was my first great experience in quite a while. The food was excellent and the service was second to none. I was impressed by the preparation of the dishes and the quality of ingredients. Try the spicy crispy beef...Not many Chinese restaurants will do this dish, but Su-Changs does it well!

It was ok. I find it hard that this is the best on the North Shore. I've had better on the North Shore. Service was average, the server wasn't overly chipper or enthusiastic, just average which doesn't bother us. The food came out quick. I got the chicken/broccoli combo plate with the pork fried rice and spring roll. It was average. The pork fried rice was just that...pork and fried rice, nothing else mixed in, no egg, onions or anything else which I felt was plain and boring. The chicken and broccoli had a sweet brown sauce that wasn't very strong in taste. The chicken tasted rubbery but the broccoli was fine. The fortune cookie also tasted stale. The Egg Drop soup and Crab Rangoon was pretty good though! Overall it was very plain and there wasn't anything above average. The rating drops below average with the rubbery chicken.

This place is really good. If you like Chinese the food here is high quality. The restaurant os clean and the food is delicious. I have been here 3 times now. I like to try a place a few times before writing. Tonight I am having pking ravs. They are quite awesome. Crispy, with a clean taste. I also got crispy duck. It was crispy as advertised and moist I was not 100% crazy about but that may be me. I do not usually get it. The only down side is that the staff is not wicked friendly. But again, the food is great and the place is clean. Very clean!

Been going for years. Gourmet Chinese treats in lovely restaurant. It's incredible, fresh, fabulous food. Good service & Su's warm, welcoming charm. (She says you must have noodles on your birthday!) sent them to our table in the past.

Unbelievable take out!! As busy as the place is, they ALWAYS have their act together! No waiting... Only challenge is the parking lot on a Sat night can be hairy but it's totally worth dealing with it. A+++

Excellent restaurant. My boyfriend and I enjoyed a great meal here on Christmas. We started off with the wonton soup. Best wonton soup I have had by far. For our meal we had chicken with peanuts with broccoli and general gau's chicken. Both were out of this world. Portions are great sized. Pork fried rice comes with meal and is so large almost like a mountain! I would recommend this lovely place to anyone who enjoys great Chinese food. I will deffinately be coming back here!!!!

One of my favorite restaurants. Clean Great Food Good Prices Great Service First, I would like to mention that It is always extraordinarily clean. They have snow white tablecloths and napkins, I even hear that they have a special laundromat in the basement, (but this is unconfirmed) Cleanliness also extends to all silverware, plates, and even the windows. Now, the food... First, you get a free bottomless pot of hot, house-brewed Oolong tea. Now, what's slightly unusual about ordering here, is that you do not order for yourself, you order for your table. A plate of pan-seared noodles for instance, is to be shared among the whole table. Soup - which is only 6 bucks can fill 4 large bowls. Speaking of soup, be sure to try the "Sai Su Minced Beef Soup, it is awesome! To reiterate. this is not a restaurant where people order for themselves. So groups of at least 3 are preferred. All food is always ALWAYS prepared fresh, nothing is frozen, nothing is made outside and then reheated. The soup that I was talking about, every time I eat it, it tastes a tad different. And by that I mean it is a little more thick, a little more salty. This indicates it is made by a chef, from scratch. the Crab Rangoons are always brought on a plate straight from the fryer, and are very hot, not to the point of being unbearable, just hot enough for you to know beyond a reasonable doubt they are fresh. All of the food here is very good, it is just a matter of if it is to your tastes. Everyone must find their favorite dishes, and go with them. Some plates can be a tad bland, but there is salt, pepper, sweet/sour sauce, and really spicy chinese mustard provided. Finally, I want to talk about service, which is amazing. First, as far as I know, you are not assigned a waiter, but they all know what you need and or ordered. Therefore, you can flag down anyone, and not have to wait for your specific waiter to stop by. Service is fast, as soon as everyone closes their menu, a waiter comes up to take your order. Appetizers are brought soon afterwards, as soon as you finish one, the next is out before you can say "SuChangs" The number one thing about service, is customer care. For example, as I mentioned, My family and I order the Crab Rangoons. According to the menu, a table is supposed to get 10. There are three of us in my family (myself included), so instead of, per the menu, bringing us ten, and having us fight over the last one, they ALWAYS bring twelve without the price going up. Another thing is that a woman who is the owner, or manager usually walks around at dinnertime and asks people how everything is. As a tea lover, I asked if I could have some of the loose tea they use in their bottomless pots. While they could not do this, she said If I brought a Thermos, they would happily fill it up. I must say, however, that they are very conservative when it comes to decor, but this leads to more focus on the food, and less focus on decorations.

So, it's better than PF Chang's but that's not saying much. Heading in I scoped out that 90% of the tables were seated with geriatrics, which usually means huge portions and low prices. I noticed that both blue hair tables near us shared apps and an entree, which told me without opening the menu that the prices are high. My noodles were under-seasoned and, well, boring. I had to add salt, and I rarely ever add salt to anything. The scallops were way too salty. The tea tasted like it was the 2nd or 3rd brewing of the leaves and was really watery. The best thing we ordered? Spicy garlic beans. They were pretty awesome. There is a reason the blue hairs were able to share and app and entree and leave with a moderate bill, the portions are that huge. We had mountains of mediocre food. Except for the beans, they could have brought me a bigger plate of those, damn are they good. The place is clean and service was good. It's too bad they can't get the food up to the level of service, if so it would be a 5 star kinda place. Also it's crazy loud in here, why is it so loud? I have no idea but I think it's time some people turn up their beltone. (From reading other reviews I'm hopeful we went on an off night, but even still I'm in no hurry to go back. There are a million other places with better food within a short drive.)

Very nice restaurant and staff. The food however is from what I can tell so breaded and deep fried it's like eating at a ball game or Walmart. If you want sugar, salt and deep fried, this is the place for you.

Good place for a business lunch. My colleague suggested their pork ribs. They went very well with the fresh garlic vegetable (if I only knew the name of the dark green stem and leaf vegetable) .

Delicious food and wonderful service! I swear they replenish your water every time you take a sip. The food is nice, and not fast-food style at all. There is tea on the table at all times and it is sooo good! The only downside is that they have no dessert, but they do give you pineapple chunks with your check.

Recently, I was driving through Peabody at lunchtime and realized I was near Su Chang's. It had been quite a while since I'd been there, so I stopped by. The waiter brought over a nice pot of tea and asked if I was ready to order. I was leaning toward ordering a spicy fish dish so I asked whether the garlic fish had a spicy black bean sauce and he said no but they could make it that way. Nice! I ordered it with brown rice and a wonton soup, requesting a level 2 heat for the fish (of a scale 1-5).The meal was delicious! The portion was enough for two, and I ended up taking half of it home making a great lunch for the next day. I will definitely go back. Don't let the classy decor deter you from going to this restaurant. They welcome everyone with a smile. I happened to be wearing jeans and a long sleeve T shirt.

A friend of mine took me here for dinner one day and it was amazing. I don't remember what I had except for the spicy green beans. After I tasted them, I'd decided that this was the best Chinese restaurant on the north shore. For whatever reason, I didn't come back for at least a year or two. I ate there tonight. The restaurant is bustling, almost loud, but the energy and light in the room just feels good. Lots of families and kids, elderly people, you name it. The waiter was pleasant and friendly. I asked him for a recommendation. Specifically, I asked him for a specialty. He seemed confused. So I asked him what was the most popular. He was still confused. So I asked him what dish people asked for the most and kept coming back to order. He recommended the salt and pepper scallop. So I ordered it, along with spicy green beans. My dining companion ordered some sort of rice stick noodle dish. Our meal, including a Coke, cost about $37 plus tip. My salt and pepper scallops were nothing to write home about. They tasted pleasant, but a bit salty and they were a little overcooked for my taste, but they were not yet rubbery, so it was okay. My partner's rice stick noodles desperately needed salt and the pork tasted a bit dry and perhaps a bit old. Other than that, it was an acceptable dish, though nothing I would order again. My spicy green beans were just as wonderful as I remember them. It's one of those dishes that will keep me coming back to this restaurant hoping that I find a dish that is just as spectacular so that I can fall in love with this restaurant all over again.

Nicely done upscale Chinese. We had garlic scallops with snow pea pods, shrimp fried rice and hot and sour soup. Scallops were excellent! The service was attentive and everything arrived with decent timing in between courses. Prices are also decent-and we are leaving with enough for lunch tomorrow!

Loved it! Crab Rangoon was delish, especially with hot mustard. Chinese spinach was fresh with just the right amount of garlic. Shrimp with peanuts-- good flavor, good spice. Chicken Gau was fried, but not greasy. Ask about specials. Take out: exactly 10 minutes. Restaurant was inviting, clean and spacious.

Can't wait to come back here!!! SO GREAT. I think it looks fancier outside than it really is. Parking isn't fantastic, but who cares? This food is to die for! The crab rangoons are so savory! Best I've ever had. I went with a party of four and we just split about 6 dishes (2 apps and 4 entrees - no drinks). It came to roughly $15 each. Not too shabby.

Sometimes good sometimes so so.. After my last experience..Im done with them..Chi town only! pan fired noodle suppose to be crispy they were soggy and the spicy shrimp no shell,,just fried and loosely sprinkled chopped green peppers over...rediculous..All done thank you!

This is a great restaurant. The tablecloth was very clean. the off street parking was basically flat. The service was ok. The noodles came out in long strings. The soup was not challenging. The duck was not so crispy that it would cut your mouth, in fact, not very crispy at all. The flavors were not challenging or exciting. If 3 was meh, it could be a 3. But it is not really "a-ok". Perhaps we ordered the wrong things. we thought that might be the effect. We would happily go back if someone else was paying. Ok, -1 star for being clean and westernized. If you want westernized, then treat it as a 3 star. I prefer huton duck and food.

love this place! food always tastes fresh and they make a mean mia tia! i love the crab rangoons and lomein dishes, service is always very friendly and the owner is almost always present asking if we need anything or if we have any questions. don't let the fancy decor scare you away, this place is very reasonably priced. cons: parking! WHAT A NIGHTMARE. when people want this chinese food, they get this chinese food. not to mention they don't care side swiping or squeezing into a space they have to get out of the passanger side door. parking lot is very tight and has an odd design. def not suitable for people with trucks or large suvs on a friday or saturday night. other then that, awesome. always talking about this place. :)

This is a great restaurant to meet and socialize with your friends. The food is outstanding and appealing. The bartender makes great drinks and the selection of liquors is amazing.I would have to agree with the others and say that Su Changs is the best on the North Shore. The plates are so appealing and the food is delicious. I love the spicy green beans and the spareribs on the bone are so full of meat . The main meals are wonderful and full of flavor and spicy. I will be back ! Rest room is cleaned and the atmosphere is nice. The owner does walk around to the tables and makes sure that you are happy ( this is a plus) . Try this restaurant you wont be disappointed. CA

My first time here and it was awful. I'd give it 1-star but my girlfriend said the scalion pie and chicken lo mein was ok. I got the general gao's chicken and hot and sour soup. The general gao chicken was HORRIBLE!!! They give u these oversized chicken pieces that are 1/2 dark meat and full of veins. They give u 15 of these. I ate only 3. The hot and sour soup was good though. This place has good curb appeal, but their food quality is sub-par. I'd be skeptical of some of the other reviews on here. I'm never going back, and I don't say that very often.

Chinese food is different in the Boston Metro area as opposed to New York or even the West coast. That said this is my favorite place to go for Chinese food! The Mango Wonton's are great and so is the orange chicken!

I've been going to Su-Chang's regularly for about 13 years. I live fairly close to the restaurant and my boss at the time, who lived in Andover, told me this was the only place she went to when she felt like Chinese. I figured it must be good so I went with my husband soon after and we were hooked. The inside isn't super trendy (they haven't redecorated since I started going there) but for a Chinese restaurant, it's very nice. Even though this place is usually very busy, I don't think I've ever had to wait for a table. The servers are all very polite. I don't recall ever once having bad service, which is pretty good considering that English is usually not their first language, and we don't speak any Chinese. Most of them have a pretty heavy accent, but we never had anything lost in translation, you could say. The service is fairly quick, even when they're busy, and you never have to ask for a drink because they give you plenty of tea and water. We go here about once a month on average so I've tried almost everything on the menu. Like most Chinese restaurants, their menu is absolutely huge. There were maybe one or two things I wasn't crazy about but the vast majority of the time the food is delicious. It's served family style, so we each pick out an entree we like, then we sample each other's food. It is a little pricey for Chinese (the bill usually totals about $60 for four of us) but they give you a boatload of food. Unless you have an absolutely massive appetite, you will leave this place with enough leftovers to last about a week. So, in my opinion, it is worth the extra money. The only downside to the restaurant is the parking. The parking lot looks big, but it's cut out very odd and it's certainly not enough to accommodate all their customers. It was just me and my kids the last time we went and there were no spaces to be found. I didn't want to just park in front of other cars and block them in like some other people were doing, so I had to park on the cul-de-sac beside the restaurant. The neighborhood and Su-Chang's don't want people doing this, but I felt I had no choice, because there was absolutely no where else to park. I'm not sure if there's anything that can be done about this situation so I'm not going to dock them any stars. Just be forewarned: If it's on a busy night, you'll probably have a very hard time finding a place to park. The last time I was there, I ordered the egg noodles with pork, chicken and veggies and it was fantastic, as always. They cook their vegetables al dente, instead of serving them nearly raw like most Chinese restaurants do. Since my family cooks veggies until they're limp rags, I prefer Su-Chang's veggies over other chinese restaurants. Probably the best thing on their menu is the crab rangoons. They always come out hot, with a crispy outside and creamy delicious inside. One serving is ten rangoons, and two servings is about 30-40 rangoons (yes the math is bad, but at least it's in my favor, so I don't care), so you probably don't need to order more than that unless you have a huge party. The seafood and tofu soup is the second best. It's usually chock full of chewy yummy calamari, tofu, and egg whites (I think). My favorite entree is the sesame beef. It's usually cooked to perfection, tender and drizzled with a yummy sweet and sour sauce. I've been there for lunch a long time ago and I believe the menu is much shorter, so if you want variety, I'd go there for dinner. They also don't serve desert, but you get some pineapple chunks when you receive your bill. But like I said before, unless you have a massive appetite, you won't want desert anyway. I definitely recommend this place, it's more than worth it.

Nothing new or unique about the building itself, but as far as i could tell it all seemed clean and well maintained. The food is probably my favorite chinese food nearby. I go there a lot and I have always had fast and consistent service. If you have the time, but still want to eat at home, I recommend going with your group and order to go instead of calling ahead. Why? The usual bartender (Ken) is one of my favorite bartenders in the area, making me wish it was a bar instead of a food place. Makes a great Mai Tie, and I do not even drink them anywhere else.

After having our New Years meal down the street at a Chinese place on route one in Peabody our food there was cold greasy and not cooked to order and a limited menu also our chicken cashew and another dish we ordered ended up that the chicken was bad long story short we left there still hungry we only ate our greasy appetizers .we then went bowling and on the way home placed an order at su changs for noodles, chicken cashew, terriaki, and rice all were cooked to order and fresh and hot,we should of went here instead .we will next year for sure very friendly even when taking out everything was right,

My father loves this restaurant and it just happens to be about half way between our homes so we meet here for lunch a few times per year. The service is always friendly and attentive; my husband accidently spilled a bunch of Cheerios on the floor as soon as we arrived today and they did not even blink. He kept apologizing and they kept insisting that it was fine as they swept them up. The food is consistently good. I find it very difficult to find Chinese food that is not greasy or heavy and Su-Chang's always delivers piping hot food that is neither greasy or heavy. We enjoy their house specialty dishes as well- yum!

A real chinese restaurant outside of Chinatown and I found it! This is no pupu platter, chop suey, fortune cookie giving kind of place. Oh correction, I just looked at the menu and they have that kind of stuff there. Moving on. My review is only based on the traditional 10 course meal served during big celebrations. Typically when I go to an americanized chinese resturant, the food is mediocre, at best. This place is different than those, by serving authentic, tasty dishes (although still not comparable to Chinatown. It's definitely more upscale than most chinese restaurants. If you want the convenience of parking, if you like cleanliness, and if you live in the north shore, then this is the place to go to for chinese food.

SuChangs is great if you are going with many friends. Usually lunch menu is cheaper than dinner menu but I definitely recommend dinner menu for better taste. Here is my favorites; the best one is 'Crispy Spicy beef with tangerine'. You will not regret with this order and if you have any kinds of fried rice or fried Romain, you will have enough dinner with low cost for lots of friends.

I love this place. We came here very often when we lived in Peabody. Service is supurb. You take on sip of your water, and they are already refilling it. Prices are very cheap, and the food is so good. Fave aps - crab rangoon (you get a lot of them) and peking ravioli - these are to die for. The best chinese restaurant on the north shore if you ask me. The only downside is that they don't have deserts, although you get a plate of pineapple with your bill.

This place is pretty close to abysmal, but not quite there, so it squeaks by with two stars. First of all let me establish that I have only been there for lunch, and only ordered off the lunch specials menu. First off, this place is dirty! There are always flies buzzing around.. gross! The wait staff is always friendly, and has never messed up our food, and we always have water and tea very quickly... in fact, everything is served very quickly... The lunch specials are decent, but not great... the lo mein isn't made with lo mein noodles, but it is ok tasting. The fried rice isn't even close to tasting like fried rice, it is bland and usually cold. The soups (egg or hot and sour) are ok, but not great. The lunch specials are really cheap though, so maybe the other menu items are better... I have eaten here a dozen times (my team likes to eat lunch here), but I must say, after the first time I would have never gone back if I could. Repeated visits have just ingrained my dislike of this place.

One of the very few good chinese food places. Delicious lobster sauce. I only found hair in one of my orders here ONE time, which really isnt so bad when it comes to chinese food.

An elegant building inside and out, excellent service, fresh food that is much lighter and more creative than traditional chinese food. I love the white linens and comfy seating, Su-Chang's is a completely different experience than 90% of the asian restaurants out there, with paneling on the walls and one-peice benches made of melamine. The chinese eggplant stuffed with shrimp pate is divine...

Good Chinese food. Not the best but good. Classy. Two large but intimate dinning rooms, a very small bar/lounge & a small (holds maybe up to 50 people) function room on the 2nd floor. Daily specials. Very good service. The owner (I thinks she's the owner & she's not Chinese) makes frequent rounds to check on the dinners personally. (nice touch) The best crab rangoons anywhere. My former employer would "treat" us to their food once or twice a year (always the same stuff! ) Food less than good in those large quantities. Might not be good for very large groups. The only other thing bad I can say is they tend to stand around in the dinning rooms, & it gets a bit creepy some times because it feels like your being watched. Can be busy but I've never had to wait for a table. Give it a try if you haven't already.

Based on all the reviews we ordered from here tonight. Had crispy beef, and veggie fried rice which were I would say just okay. Also had Chicken and Broccolli which I thought was a standard safe choice. Was so incredibly fishy I spent the next ten minutes dry heaving. Never again.

To the people who gave this rating less than 3 stars, you should be flagged like a scam on craigslist !!! I have been to this place numerous times....the only tiny issue I might have had was the service was not as good as other times I ate here. The food is always delicious and THEY ALWAYS GIVE BIG PORTIONS. The price is extremely reasonable for food that is extremely good...for that, I give 5 stars to Su-Chang's. You can go to many walk in/take out chinese places...but this sit down restaurant I would drive for miles and miles just to enjoy a good dinner with family or friends.

We have been here twice, and plan to return. Fresh, and authentic Cantonese food which can be hard to come by in the area. The service is attentive and timely. When the check comes you pay for what you get, it doesn't break the bank, but it's pricey.

Well-lit and bustling restaurant with great Chinese food. I came with my family and we ordered 2 appetizers-Peking duck ravioli and crab Rangoon. The sauces that came with them were delicious, especially the chilie sauce. We also got- pork fried rice, shrimp with vegetables, beef and onions, and general tso chicken. Everything came out extremely quickly and service was great. Ill definitely come here again.

From my lifetime experience of Chinese restaurants...let me say two things about Su-Chang's that are so unique to this place: 1) one the cleanest Chinese restaurants you will ever go to 2) very well trained Chinese staffs you will ever meet Now these two facts alone puts this place at a 4 star level because it's a rare thing in Chinese restaurants (i'm not trying to be raciest but honest) Of course the food can make it go down a star or go up a star. It's good food. It's clean, fresh and seasoned well. If you are sick of greasy and MSG filled Chinese dishes, you will find this place to satisfy your health needs. Whatever you get, you won't be disappointed. Spicy Crispy beef, corn chicken soup, shrimp eggplant...all freaking awesome. The reason why I won't give 5 stars is that there is no wow factor in most of their dishes.

Simply amazing Chinese food. I was visiting a friend in Boston, and he brought me to Su-Chang's--so glad he did! The crab rangoon was the best I've ever had, as were the scallops with vegetables. The staff was very attentive (but not in an overbearing way), and the prices were very reasonable. I will definitely return to Su-Chang's on my next trip to the Boston area!

I'd give this place three and a half stars if I could, but four can't hurt since I love their pork fried rice. And their General Gau's... not to mention the Spicy Chicken with Peanuts which is also good with pork. They have a nice establishment and the wait staff never lets my water glass be empty. I've never had a problem getting a table here, though I pretty much only go during lunch time. I will say that their Crab Ragoon has gotten much better than it had been a few months ago. We'd ordered take-out and somehow, I'm not sure how this is possible, the Crab Ragoon tasted sweet. Yes, I know that sounds weird but that's what happened. I tried it again the other day and thankfully all is right in the world because it tasted as Crab Ragoon should: savory and delicious. They have really good prices for lunch and a nice selection of beers to choose from. What more could you ask for?

The best General Gau's...anywhere! Su Chang's is one of the best Chinese restaurants on the North Shore - dare I say, the best? High quality ingredients, upscale but comfortable atmosphere, and friendly service yield a delightful experience each and every time. I have been eating there for years, both in the restaurant and take-out. My favorite dish there is definitely the General Gau's chicken, though I can readily recommend anything on the menu. No one comes close to making it like Su Chang's. Believe me, I've tasted many versions of the dish, and Su Chang's continues to outshine them all. The chicken pieces are big and tender, and the sauce is perfectly balanced: a bit sweet, not too spicy, and surprisingly light. Perfect with Pork Fried Rice, Peking Ravioli, maybe some boneless spareribs. Ahh, what a meal. Su Chang's is a perfect night out for couples, friends, and family. Weekends are busy, so consider making a reservation!

One of my favorite places for Chinese food. This place is clean and spacious and has some of the most attentive service I've ever seen. I swear the water in my glass doesn't go below a sip or two before they fill it again. The food is delicious and the price can't be beat.

Curse you, Su Chang! Scallion pancakes = no flavor Peking ravioli = no flavor + mushy Fried rice = no flavor Chicken Lo Mein = no flavor + mushy Honest to god we're so mad at all you 3+ star reviewers. What have we ever done to you? Desperate, we were for Chinese food after months of avoiding it following too many bad takeaways. Desperate, we tell you! And this is what you'd have us believe to be the best Chinese food on the north shore? Well, perhaps it is, but that doesn't mean it wasn't absolutely horrible. Lordy! A couple bites of each item and we literally put our forks down. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm a big fat man and that just doesn't happen! God, we're still so dejected and this happened last night. I mean, where do we turn? Is there a support group? For the love of Loomis, we swear we are finished with Chinese food until our next visit to SF. And you, the rest of you, shame!

This is my first review ever. I usually don't like to waste my time doing something like this, but I felt that I just had to warn other people. The reason why we decided to try this restaurant, was all the great reviews. Well, what a disappointment. This is definitely one of the worst chinese places that I've been to. Me and my wife went there for lunch, and ordered crab rangoon, general Gau's chicken, shrimp with lobster sauce, pork fried rice and couple of soups (hot & sour and egg drop)... The only things that were okay were the pork fried rice and soups (but those are hard to mess up). Chicken tasted like it was made from previous chicken leftovers, and was really hard to chew. Ground pork in lobster sauce was the same way. Shrimp smelled and tasted like chlorine - disgusting !! Crab rangoon was really greasy. I understand it is deep fried, but it shouldn't have oil dripping from it. We probably ate quarter of food that we ordered, mostly rice and soups. I think that all these 5 star reviews were left by people, that usually eat chinese at mall food courts. As it is mentioned in previous review, portions are generous, but then they are in most chinese places. If you want love big portions, so you can stuff your gut with doesn't matter what, this place would be great. I prefer quality, not quantity, that is why will never go back to this place, even if every other chinese restaurant closes.

Su-Changs is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants...and I don't have many. This is my go to place when I want to treat out of towners for Chinese. The restaurant is super clean and food is fresh and cooked to order. Waiters can sometimes be standoffish but it could be because of language barrier. Other than that I urge you to try this place, you'll love it!

Don't really ever go for Chinese food because of the poor quality of food most places serve. What did we think about Su-Chang's Restaurant?...Great food is the first thing that comes to mind! We ordered sweet and sour chicken, boneless spare ribs and beef fried rice and they where all exceptionally good tasting. The spare ribs had a great tasting sauce on them and where not all dried out and tough like other places we have ordered them before. The sweet and sour chicken was very good as well. You could tell that they where freshly cooked and their red sauce is different than any other place we had got it before. Not sure if they make it themselves or what but it was better tasting and was not as red colored like most others serve. Thought we would try this place because of its other good reviews. The wait staff and the inside decor is very nice as well. Will be back! We give Su-Chang's 5 Stars for its quality food we where served.

Disappointing. Friendly fast service (we had take out) but the food left something to be desired. I had general gau's chicken which was fatty and not appealing. Maybe I'm too Americanized but I like it better when it's like a boneless chicken wing. Moo Shu pork was good with plenty of hoisin sauce on the side.

Here's the thing about Su-Chang's: It's good, very good, but it all depends on what you order. I've had great meals here and not-so-great meals here. For the most part, everything tastes very fresh. But there will be those odd, random days where something tastes like they made it the day before, or the sauce is exceptionally goopy (like it was reheated). These random days really only come once in a while, but they do come... Good news: Today was not one of those days! We had an awesome array of food that felt so very fresh. The sauted Chinese spinach is always good, and tasty enough that my anti-veggie husband eats a big helping. The pan-fried shrimp have a very light batter that is a touch salty, but eased out with heaps of slivered ginger - this is my favorite dish! The beef lo mein and pork fried rice were very good today as well. I continue to go back to Su-Chang's because it's (1) close to my home and (2) some of the best food near the North Shore Mall. (Ladies and gentleman, there really is no good food there. The Cheesecake Factory is passable. Legal Seafoods is so over-priced. And, don't even get me started on Joe's American Bar & Grill.) The good news is P.F. Chang's is supposedly coming into the mall when Nordstrom's does in the Spring. Then, people will REALLY have to debate over the best Chinese on the North Shore.

Mmmmm.....the scallion pancakes are yummmy! This place has some of the best Chinese food outside Chinatown. I wish it was closer to where I lived. This is also a great place to have a birthday party or special event. They have a nice upstairs room that we've had many a 50th birthday party and other special events. BTW-the mai tai's are strong!

Okay, I'll be honest up front and say that I know the owners....but the reason I know them is because I go there often and the reason I go there often is simple: 1. Exceptionally clean 2. Great service staff 3. Food is outstanding 4. Prices very reasonable considering the quality 2 little known secrets......1) EVERYTHING is cooked to order...no steaming pots out back that they just scoop your food from....2) they have many items not on the menu....just ask!

THE GOOD: food's decent, some interesting choices on the menu, nice environs, full bar, inexpensive (total tally was $39 for two people with leftovers for a couple days), orders come out FAST THE BAD: drafty! they needed a space heater near our table. this means your food gets cold quick. bar area has very little seating. parking lot is a little small THE UGLY: the menu is nearly identical to that of the Royal East in Cambridge. The layout is the same, as is the flavor text about Cantonese cuisine; the menu items are almost the same set; AND I have heard secondhand that they even share some of the same staff! However, the food is much better in Peabody.

It's a good mandarin restaurant that has a nice decor that is clean and not dingy like some chinese restaurants. Price is also very fair and a good value. The food overall is above average. My only negative comment is that they use too much baking soda to marinate their meats. It's a technique some chinese restaurants, especially Chinatown, use to tenderize the meat. If overdone, it gives it a funny taste and texture.

When it comes to Chinese food on the North Shore, Su-Chang's may very well be the best. For awhile, I forgot they were there because I don't drive down Lowell Street that often, but I decided to pop in there recently for takeout and cursed myself for letting them slip my mind. Everything was simply amazing and not super oily like you get at most Chinese restaurants. It's gorgeous inside, but luckily for the informal they have swift and friendly takeout. I haven't sat down in there in awhile, but from what I remember they always a had friendly and compentant waitstaff. There's not much to say that hasn't already been said, but if you haven't been here and you live on the North Shore, you need to give them a try. You'll be hooked!!

The best Chinese food anywhere. Peking Duck is always available, no need to pre-order. We took a young man from Hong Kong here and he said it was the best Chinese food he'd had in the States. Fast service, excellent management and good prices. Good for takeout or dining in.

This upscale Chinese Restaurant serves delicious authentic food. The restaurant architecture is that of a beautiful colonial home, and if I remember correctly it is a replica of a home of some prominent historical person in the North Shore. I'm local to the area, and heard this a while back. I could be wrong. Anyway, the decor is not what you would expect of a Chinese Restaurant (white linens, china, etc). Your best bet is to come here on a weeknight to avoid the wait and parking hassle. There is a big lot, but it gets crowded and there really isn't any other place to park in the area.

Speaking as a discerning Asian diner, Su Chen is second to none when it comes to serving up truly authentic and delicious Chinese food in a classy setting in the North Shore. It is the one place my family and I go to for a guaranteed great meal without breaking the bank. The interior of the restaurant is tastefully decorated, without the gaudiness that plagues many Chinese restaurants here in the States. High, vaulted ceilings and light colors make it a delightful place to enjoy a meal. Service is very attentive and helpful. The staff is friendly and makes an effort to recognize you if you are a regular. On busy nights, there are long waits for a table, although one time when we showed up on a Saturday night, sans reservation, and with a large party (eight people) in tow, we were ushered upstairs to our own little dining room. I was very impressed that they went out of their way to earn our business. Perhaps the main reason we coming back is because the food is simply outstanding, and very close to true Chinese food. If you're used to greasy, MSG-laced Chinese takeout, you might be surprised by Su Chang's offerings. Our first course usually includes the excellent seafood and tofu soup. Another must-have here are the salt-and-pepper pork chops. Most of their seafood offerings are excellent as well. You server can fill you in on the chef's specialties, and what on the menu is particularly fresh or unique. Go ahead and step out of your comfort zone; forgo the orange chicken and try something you've never heard of before. Basically, if you've grown tired of seeing restaurants take General Tsao's chicken and try to pass it off as real Chinese food, go to Su Chang. It's one of the best restaurants of its kind outside of Chinatown. Reservations recommended.

  • Danny F.

I really have to give Su-Chang's props for having a few truly authentic Chinese dishes on the menu, along with totally Americanized fare, which is as greasy and disgusting as you could wish for. Anyway, the Sai Wu (West Lake) minced beef soup and boneless ribs are truly crave worthy. I almost always have those two dishes plus one other dish when I go. The soup is so fragrant that you could smell it all night after your meal. And the boneless ribs are mind-blowing. Nobody does it like Su-Chang. The meat is thick and tender and juicy to the max, and not at all the skinny greasy strips of nothing you get usually. These two are the standouts. Everything else can be a hit or miss, but if you stick with the lighter fare, you will have a very lovely meal.

As others have mentioned, their crab rangoons are outstanding. Unfortunately, everything else I tried was mediocre to decent. Service was excellent, though, and it's very clean. I'd go again.

I really didn't care for the food here. I thought it was flavorless & bland, but maybe I used to more greasy, take-out places. However, the service is nice, everyone is friendly, it is upscale, & does have a function room. Personally, though, the food isn't for me.

  • Marianne R.

Best Chinese food....the crab rangoon are SUPERB....but so is everything else. Great quality of beef. The only thing that I don't like are the chicken wings. I have to add that I have a friend that lives "across the pond" and this is his favorite restaurant so when he comes to visit we have to go at least twice.

  • Geoff M.

I'd say this is about the best Chinese food in the area. When it comes to Chinese I usually look for takeout, but dining in at Su Chang's is a very pleasant experience. The service is very attentive as well. My wife and I played "the water glass game" there, where we tried to end up with an empty water glass. It was nearly impossible to do. It seemed there was one bus boy whose job was to only make sure that no water glasses sat empty, or suffer a severe beating in the kitchen. Short of chugging the water in one gulp, my glass never got below a quarter full, and I tried. As for the food, the steamed ravioli are fantastic, and the general gao's chicken is very good as well. not crazy sticky and sweet, but light and crunchy. The food seemed very fresh, and didn't sit in the pit of your stomach like some Chinese food. Highly recommended.

I can't say enough good things! Su Chang's has a very nice, sophistocated atmosphere - white tablecoths, very clean aesthetic. The servers there were incredibly polite and attentive. Even though it's more upscale than your average sit-down Chinese restaurant, there was no stuffiness here. I saw people in all kinds of clothes - From borderline formal wear to dads with their kids, straight from softball practice. No one looked out of place! The food was wonderful, with enormous portions. I split a Peking Raviolo thinking it would be maybe 4 pieces at most. I think it was more like 8! For $6, you can't really beat that. The 4 of us all got an entree and kind of shared. I don't think anyone's was over $8.50 and we had way too much food. (We finished it all, mind you). They had a large beer and wine menu, which was also reasonably-priced. Gotta love a $4 glass of wine!

Where's the MSG? This is another attempt to bastardize authentic Chinese food. White table linens, prompt service, friendly staff, and no cockroaches crawling on the wall and YES, they serve Chinese food. It's like going on a perfect blind date. At first you're expecting the worse: she's ugly, not sociable, cankles, yellow teeth. But when you finally see her, you're praising God (even though you don't believe in one), a long sigh of relief that she's the complete opposite of what you're superficial heart was afraid of. Moreover, guess what? It didn't cost you an arm and a leg!

Being a Chinatown diner who prefers Peach Farm and Best Little Rest., Su Changs does the job when I want decent Americanized Chinese food on the N. Shore. Unfortunately, that's not saying much since there is not much to choose from. PF Changs is faux-authentic and over-priced; Fortune Palace is most unfortunate...just being better than the rest makes Su Changs the "best" on the N. Shore.

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant. Despite what others said, I actually like the food a lot. Service is outstanding. Prices are reasonable. You can have a casual dinner there as well as a big Birthday party (my family had both on a few occasions and we were never disappointed). Try their crab rangoon for an appetizer - it's definitely the best in town. The owner walks around and talks to people. She's very friendly and will recognize you if you come there a few times - I think that's very nice. They do get very busy during dinner on weekends. If you'd like to have a party there, let them know way in advance as those get booked quickly (for the private big room upstairs).

Su-Chang's, Su-Chang's. I have been hearing of Su-Chang's for over a year now and have been excitedly awaiting a visit to Peabody to check out what I've heard is some of the best Chinese food around. I absolutely loved the brightness and cleanliness of the restaurant. It's white table clothes and nice place settings felt very elegant. The fresh slice of lemon in water glass turned me on. What can I say? It's the little things in life. Hubby and I ordered some pretty standard fare but there was nothing standard about this fare. The spring rolls we ordered came out piping hot and they were fresh, light and delicious. After the plates were collected and our water glasses had been refilled by an attentive waiter, the main fare arrived. The scallops and veggies were downright scrumptious, the chicken and broccoli was good and the veggie fried rice was very above average and huge. Both hubby and I walked away feeling very satisfied and happy. Happy that Su-Chang's wasn't a let down and for me, at least, does live up to all the hype I've heard. Even with a fridge full of leftovers, I'm looking forward to my next trip. Yummy.

I used live right down the road from Su- Changs. It's a great chinese restaurant, I will not Chinese any place else. I have eaten in the restaurant many times which is bright and clean but prefer to do takeout from here. The food is really good, the best hot and sour soup and the General Gau's shrimp (this item seems to be a permanent special) is to die for!! I would have given 5 stars but the wait staff is not my fav and why don't care to dine in.

I have been to Su-Changs multiple times. I am usually very happy when I leave but the last time I was there I felt like I was being rushed. The Atmosphere was clean and very inviting, The service on the other hand was sub-par, it took forever for us to get water and when we finally did the waiter was no accomidating to us at all. The food on the other hand was lackluster and not as good as take out. Not the best but not bad. The reason for two stars is that I have been here before and was happy

I grew up with authentic Chinese food in Asia. This restaurant so far is the closest resemblance to what I had back home. Very very great food. There are some appetizers that aren't as authentic but overall thumbs up.

Absolutely some of the best Chinese food. Good service and plenty of seating. They have a function room above the restaurant. Try the salt and pepper squid. It's not on the menu, you just have to ask for it. It's not quite like calamari, but it is fried and a hint of spicy. Yum, Yum. When I go, I can't not order the crab rangoon. Order the crab rangoon!

I was looking forward to trying this place because of the positive feedback and particularly because they had Suan La Chow Show on the menu. Delicious pork stuffed wontons served on a bed of bean sprouts with a spicy sauce. See the reviews for Mary Chung in Cambridge if you are not familiar with this dish. The restaurant itself is very attractive, resembling a private residence as opposed to a typical dining establishment. Inside it is comfortable and tastefully decorated. The food was a huge disappointment. Started with the hot & sour soup which was quite good and the best part of the meal. The much anticipated appetizer showed up with the main meal which consisted of a shrimp curry dish and eggplant stuffed with shrimp dish. The shrimp curry could have used more curry and less onion. It came with chicken wings that were undercooked. The eggplant dish was rather bland. The Suan La Chow Show was terrible, served with an unpleasant tasting sauce that made the dish practically inedible. The Suan La Chow Show anti-defamation league should show up here and yank this item from the menu. Odd thing is this place was packed. Maybe it's just me.

What a disappointment. I was so excited after reading all these reviews. The service wasn't good and the food quite average. No need to return (for awhile anyway). Sorry......

This restaurant is a great place to go for really good Chinese. The food is outstanding, excellent presentation, very tasty food, not salty at all like some Chinese restaurants can be, (Probably from the over use of MSG, which this place does not use), friendly staff, it is also available for functions, (You would probably want to call ahead for details and reservations.) The dishes are moderately priced, the interior is warm and welcoming. My only complaint here is that it is a bit over-lit, but, other than that, I had a very positive experience here and I do suggest checking them out, well worth the drive, however, if you don't want to make the drive (Depending on where you are), I can also suggest that you go to Royal East in Cambridge, which is owned my the brother of the owner of Su-Changs. If you go to both restaurants, you may notice some of the same staff in both restaurants.

Best local Chinese restaurant, and probably one of the best on the North Shore. I know nothing of authenticity (though I'm happy to read in other reviews that it is quite authentic), but I know quality, and this is very, very good. I agree with the other reviewers - this is a great place because it can serve as either formal or casual. The tables all have white table cloths, but you can make it as special or not special as you want. The prices are all fair, and I have yet to be disappointed by a dish.

My husband and I stopped at this restaurant for a late lunch/early dinner this weekend. We just happened upon it as we were looking for the Barnes & Noble in the area after taking the wrong exit off the freeway. We were seated quickly and had glasses of water and a pot of hot tea within a couple of minutes. Our waiter was nice and did not make any mistakes with our order. I had won ton soup and the Moo Goo Gai Pan. My husband ordered the Peking Ravioli (essentially potstickers) and the General Gao's chicken. The won ton soup was good - not bland, good dumplings. My husband's ravioli (potstickers) were good as well. They were prompt about picking up our dishes and refilling our water glasses throughout the meal. I tend to judge new (to me) restaurants by "standard" dishes - at Thai restaurants, I order Pad Thai. At Italian restaurants, I order Lasagna. My standard dish at Chinese restaurants is Moo Goo Gai Pan. I look for vegetable and meat quality and overall taste. Their Moo Goo Gai Pan was very flavorful, but lower on the vegetable and meat quality than I'd hoped. The mushrooms were canned, and the chicken was fairly good but they were all very small pieces, making me think they were from parts of the chicken I didn't want to think about. The chicken in my husband's dish was worse - the chicken and batter were formed into little balls (I'm used to General Gao's chicken to at least look like chicken pieces, not golf balls), and there was a great deal of fat and gristle - enough for my husband to start to cut the golf ball things apart to try to separate it out and create a pile of inedible chicken parts on one side of his plate. I was brave enough to try it - the flavor was good, but the chicken quality was definitely not. The portions were very large - we each had 3/4 of our plates to take home with us. They were prompt in bringing our bill and fortune cookies. In addition to fortune cookies, they brought a small plate of chilled diced pineapple (also canned) with two toothpicks - this was a nice refreshing mini-dessert. Overall, the food was flavorful and the service was very good but the meat quality leaves something to be desired. Not a bad place if you're just looking for a quick Chinese food fix, but not a place I'd recommend as upscale or "fine dining".

Su Chang's is one of the best for Chinese food...the food is fresh...cooked to order...not your typical Chinese food restaurant...service is excellent and many times the owner will come by and help you order or send something to the table...prices are reasonable ...REcommend!!

Upscale Chinese. Nice interior. Great food. Friendly service. Accommodates large parties. If you are looking for someplace to sit down and have good Chinese food, I would recommend it. Reservations recommended as well.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
