Pizza
Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.
Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.
Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

This place was absolutely terrible , worst dining experience of my life, the pizza is like a hot steaming piece of shit, and what's up with the Mexican guy on the sign? You walk inside and it's like walking into a brothel, it reeks of cheap perfume and and body odor, the food literally tasted like someone just fried up a dogs asshole , then threw tomato sauce on it and put it on a plate in front of my face.

Great thin crust pizza and horrible service. But, I have gotten used to the service by now and it's a small price to pay for the great food. I'm not actually sure I've even ever seen any of the wait staff smile in over 10 years of coming here. Would have given it 5 stars if the service was better. This place is small and there is always at least a half hour wait no matter what time you arrive. It's on street parking with a tiny lot across the street so come prepared to circle the block a few times. They do have discounted daily specials and the spaghetti and meatballs on Wednesday night can get particularly crowded. It's their regular sized serving for just $5.50! Such a great deal. Do try the Joe's House Salad with chopped bacon and egg and house made dressing. It's enough to share.

Clears throat.... Mom and pop spot in Northampton. Local gem. Club soda, $2.00. Pizza was amazing. Clams were not bad. Spicy sauce was watery....:( Beers? Cool ish, not cold. Service? Errrrr... I think the entire meal took 2.5 hours.

Not the best decor inside or outside but you're here for the food. We were seated right away at 5:00 on a Thursday in July. Waitress was pleasant, we entered in the dining room door but there was another door for the bar area which was filled with locals. Ordered a loaf or garlic bread and Cesar salad which was decent, fried mozz which was awesome. My entree was the pasta pesto which was bland and daughter had the small pizza which was just ok-but we're from NY, knowwutImean? Cute spot overall, just don't expect true Italian food
(4)Emily B.
The food is excellent - amazing meatballs, tasty salads, and the best thin crust pizza anywhere. However, after many years of dining at Joe's, I think I'm done. The food may be great but the dingy, cramped atmosphere and grouchy waitresses ruin it for me. I've been going to Joe's for over 20 years and I don't think I've ever seen one of their waitstaff smile. I feel guilty asking for an extra napkin or a soda refill. I'm not sure if they train them to be unfriendly or what. To me, the restaurant itself and the service are part of the dining out experience, and part of your bill, and in this case neither are worth it. Anyway, if you must, just get take-out.
(2)Melissa L.
A little divey, but whatever. Gf found chicken bones under our table, but I told her to ignore it. There were regular just sitting at the bar, chatting it up, while sports played on the TVs. The decor was nice - they had menus from like a really long time ago hung on the walls. I almost thought they were real, until my gf pointed out that the pizza pie probably isn't $3 anymore. But still, the food was pretty darn cheap. We got half a loaf of garlic bread with cheese (fatty and delicious), and a whole mushroom pizza pie (the small 10" one), with an Angry Orchard cider and ginger ale for about $20 total.

This place has been open a long time and after you eat you will definitely know why! Joes pizza is just flat out delicious and there new gluten free crust is outstanding. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. Make sure to get there early because this place gets packed and stays busy. If you don't like tight spaces and moving with a beer in your hand while waiting, then I would suggest you go to another restaurant like "Toasted owl" or "spoleto" we're there not busy and you Can choose whatever table you'd like. Definitely go for the mussels and pie!

Let me set the stage - expectations were set that the servers are blunt and a tad bit cranky, but I was told that this behavior is part of the charm. Well....they delivered the bluntness and cranky and then added a layer of incompetence. I am not an atmosphere snob and I can appreciate a dive, so the environment did not phase me. I was given a tip by some trusted locals to get the pizza and fries with bleu cheese dressing on the side. So, that's what we ordered. The service was not only rude, (which we expected), but it took 24 minutes to get a menu after being seated, then we had to bus our own table and waited 35 minutes for the bill. My husband had to go to the bar to get our drinks. *Note - it was not busy. While waiting for the check for our extended stay, the server was laughing it up with a table 2 booths down and I was shocked! Did she lose her theater focus? She's supposed to "be on"! She eventually came back and proceeded to give us menus---we already ate...?!!!!!!! Listen, go the and order takeout. The food is great which is what is preventing me from rating this place a "1".

Having a great experience here on a bustling Monday. I'm traveling solo, so seated at the bar. Friendly bartender (Chris), calling people by name as they walk in. Several of the wait staff are doing the same. This is definitely a locals joint that's been an establishment in Northampton for many years. Italian dishes were more prevalent on the menu than I expected. I thought it was just pizza and spaghetti, but I was pleasantly surprised with the options. I read on Yelp about the garlic bread, so I ordered that, a side salad with house dressing and the fettuccine puttanesca. Sadly, I can't eat all of the gigantic portions, but it is all exceptionally good! Seriously, come in here and just order the garlic bread with cheese. It will make you happy when you're sad. It's amazing in all it's melted, cheesy, buttery goodness! The puttanesca comes with three levels of spice. I like spice, but wasn't sure what I was in for, so went with medium. I think this is perfect, just on the verge of being too spicy. There are big capers and olives. I love it! The house Cabernet is great on the side!
(5)Fox E.
The food is OK here- I will be returning to try more dishes and I liked the actual space. It just felt like having dinner over at my grandmother's house who just made an OK dish except at my grandma's, I don't pay.
(3)Rob M.
Stopped in here before a concert last night for a quick bite to eat. Food was good, server was very friendly. Food came out quick too! It is an eclectic dining room with lots of older decor, a little on the small side. Had a grinder and fries mozzarella and I would definitely go back to try some Italian dinners!
(4)Jen M.
Thank you, Yelp community, for pointing me toward this place I had walked by so many times. Food is delicious, service great, I love the atmosphere...lots of history there. You cannot leave without trying the garlic bread.
(4)Tai-Lan H.
I'd heard so many good things about this place and was totally psyched to go. Ok so it's a little divey, that's fine. The ambiance is old school and kind cute. The server wasn't exactly friendly but I can deal with that. My issue was the food. Ok it's huge portions for super cheap which is great, what kind of college student doesn't love that. I got the spaghetti and meatballs and the spaghetti wasn't anything special, the texture didn't really do it for me and the meatballs I couldn't even stomach. There was just something about them that made me regret each time I put a bite of them into my mouth. Bleh... No good. The sauce was nothing special. All in all it was cheap but actually far less tasty than what I make with a box of pasta and a bottle of sauce. Perhaps I should have gotten the Pizza?
(2)Mike D.
Last time I went, I ordered the Chicken Piccata. I took one bite and sent it back. Not because it was bad, but because it was un-freakin-believably good. Too good. Otherworldly good. I sent it back because I knew, had I finished the dish, I would have nothing left to accomplish on this earth and my life would be rendered totally meaningless. It was a combination of chicken, capers, pasta, white sauce and black magic concocted by what I can only assume is a demigod operating the kitchen. I ordered a gin martini. It came with the traditional ingredients, but it tasted as though John Taffer, host of TV's Bar Rescue, had made it himself with gin procured from some sacred, holy distillery in a more ancient part of the world and garnished it with olives grown from volcanic ash beds on the side of Mount Vesuvius. My companion ordered (and received) a tequila sunrise that tasted as though the bartender had actually quantified and bottled the evening sun setting far across the mighty ocean. Just as I was preparing to pay the small fortune that this meal fit for a king likely deserved, the check came. It totaled $23.50. At first, I thought it was a misprint; my mind grappled to explain how so much perfection could come at such a low price and how the bitterness of raw economics failed to capture the veritable symphony of taste injected directly into my soul in that dimly lit cathedral of food. If you've never been to Joe's but are able to read this Yelp review, your priorities are in total disarray. Caveat: be prepared to wait. Don't go to Joe's when you need a quick dinner. The place is mobbed from the second the OPEN sign gets turned on and stays mobbed deep into the night. If you can't handle that, try McDonald's or better yet: stay home.
(5)Moe B.
Ok, here goes. I'm about to criticize a beloved Northampton institution, full of color and history and quirky coolness. I've frequented Joe's often over the years. But the older I get the the more difficult rather than pleasurable the experience has become. First of all, it is impossibly and uncomfortably mobbed most of the time. Standing cheek to jowl with mobs in a large shouting scrum waiting (and waiting and waiting) for your name to be called. Then the food. Not so good. Hastily and sloppily prepared limp pasta. Over oiled blandish entrees. The kitchen must get overwhelmed. The pizza is still the best in town and gets four stars on its own. Stick to that if you must go. The waitresses are harried and get the orders messed up pretty often. All in all, a deafening frustrating experience where the food Is not worth the wait and aggravation. Call me grinch, but Joe's kinda sucks.
(2)Matt S.
Very cool place, unusual and comfortable. Food was very good, simple but done well. We enjoyed Ray's house salad, meat balls, veal parmesan w/ spaghetti and a pepperoni pizza. Service was so-so. Bar area looked like a good crowd of locals... I'll be back at some point for sure and partake.
(4)Ophelia M.
Ahhhh... Joe's.... How I wish you weren't 2000+ miles from my house! Came here on the word of Yelpers, and I'm so glad we did. I enjoyed their oven baked lasagna, which was an ample cheesy delight. Their dinners come with warm bread and a garden salad (both of which were delish). They have a full bar and though they don't have a signature cocktail menu, they do mix all the standards. A warning though, they offer a healthy pour, so proceed with caution. It's a bit cramped and was slammed with people when we were there. The ambiance is on the divey side of things. But hey, it's slammed because they are serving up some serious Italian eats with the impeccable service to match. Places like this exemplify Yelp at its best for me. It's that little hole in the wall that the locals know and love but without Yelp, I may never have found. Thanks Yelpers! And for those who haven't yet, get to it!

Went with friends a couple of months ago for the first time. The service was very slow. Took us over 2.5 hours from the time we sat down to the time we were able to leave. We wouldn't have minded so much about slow service if our waitress hadn't been a) absent for much of the time and b) acting angry she even had to be at work. Maybe it was just a bad night? My wife had baked ziti which was actually pretty good. I had the lasagne and I, um... there was so much CINNAMON in the sauce, I gagged. Who does that? I could see a pinch of cinnamon in say, chili, but lasagne? I feel whomever made the sauce must have accidentally mistaken it for... for.. I'm not even sure how that could have been mistaken for anything else, actually. I wanted to get something else but we never saw our waitress and I didn't want my table mates to have to wait longer, so my table mates graciously shared their food. :) Our friends love this place but I gotta tell ya, they didn't make a good first impression.

Third stop on a nice date night with the hubby. We had heard good things about the pizza here. We weren't greeted until we waited a few minutes and were then told to just seat ourselves. It felt like we were bothering the waitress. Ordered beer and pepperoni pizza. The pizza was different but good. Thin crust. Don't understand the Mexican themed dinning room though.
(2)Milton G.
Local and the food is amazing! Priced perfectly and the portions gigantic. My friends and I have yet to stop raving about this place. The waitress was awesome and so fun to see the local crowd come and hangout there.
(5)Chompawomp B.
The food is thoroughly mediocre but it's great they are still around in the yuppification of "Noho"... They should keep the sign, focus more on booze and redo the pizza.
(3)Bryce A.
Three words. Cheesy garlic bread. This is my favorite place to go out and eat in the pioneer valley. The wait can be pretty log sometimes, so definitely have a couple drinks at the bar while you are waiting. The daily specials are awesome. If you are in the area please check this place out.
(5)Louisa L.
I'm not a big fan of Italian food or even of pizza, but I am a very big fan of Joe's. First of all, this is thin-crust pizza. If that's not your thing, this won't be your place. If that is your thing - pay attention. I am lucky enough to live right around the corner but I would travel from much further to get a pizza - every one I've tried has been fantastic, one of the amazing pasta dishes (I love the pesto and the mussels with white sauce), or the fried calamari appetizer. Every day of the week has a budget special, but the prices are reasonable across the board. Expect a wait, but it's worth it - and grab a beer from the bar while you stand and take in the strange, cozy atmosphere. You gotta go to Joe's!
(5)Greg B.
really enjoyed it. We were seated quickly during a busy night. The pizza sauce has a sweet flavor to it that I enjoyed. The toppings were loaded. Great hidden gem in town.

oh how the mighty have fallen !!My wife and I had supper at Joes tonight, now to preface this ,I have been going to Joes on a regular basis since the late 70,s.I ordered a buffalo chicken pizza and my wife pasta Alfredo.Lets start with he wife's meal. With her dinner she got a salad. The fixings were far far from fresh, tasteless and seemed as leftovers ( as did much of our food but more on that)come on Joes we are surrounded by the best produce right here in the valley use it !!!!!!!!!. With her meal also came bread which was stale, again left overs? My pizza: chicken was dry , way dry ( leftovers again ?),when I have had this pizza in the past the chicken has always been juicey and excellent not this time. Now buffalo pizza means spicy right? nope not what so ever. And last but not least the service. My wife received her entree and I waited over 25 minutes more for my pizza while people around me that had ordered after me were getting theirs. was my waitress around so I could make mention of that ? oh no didn't see here for 30 minutes !!!! I hope this is not the results of a different family member taking over the establishment, you have always been so wonderful Joes whats happening to you?!?!?!oh and was that one of the cooks getting stoned in his car in the parking lot before it opened?
(1)David P.
A Northampton classic. Have always loved Joe's, great pizzas, EXCELLENT fried calamari. Highly recommend the mushroom salad. HOWEVER, something hasn't been quite right the last few times. The sauce served with the calamari was cold as if it just came out of a deep freeze, while the pizza was simultaneously undercooked, in spite of the vegetable toppings being overcooked and mushy.
(4)Jennick S.
No one greeted us when we came in, and since it was our first time there, it wasn't clear to us where we should wait, or who was hosting. The server was terrible- she didn't make any sort of effort to be friendly, didn't bring us items we asked for, didn't check in on us, and was seen using her bare hands to manhandle people's leftovers while she was wrapping them at a countertop. The food was quick to come to the table, but not worth the money. One dish was watery and bland, another was huge and "hot" but had no real flavor other than spicy. the pizza was greasy and had the smallest amount of toppings possible. I don't understand the cult-like following for Joes- I won't be back, for the amount of money we spent, the food and service should be way better than it was, especially with the superior competition within walking distance.
(2)Peter M.
Kinda cool atmosphere. There are old murals of Argentinian gauchos on the wall which is a bit strange in a pizza & pasta place but if you read the menu it explains why. I had the ziti with homemade sauce and meatballs for about $8.50. Good size portion and tasted good. The sauce was mostly thick and chunky and delicious but I could have used more of it. A lot of the sauce separated though and the resulting tomato liquid kinda sits on the bottom of the dish so I wish the sauce had been thicker throughout the dish but again, the flavor was great. The meatballs (two of them) were big and tasted homemade. I'd go back for sure. What my ratings mean: 1 star: Horrible. I'm annoyed I wasted my time and/or money here. 2 star: Not bad but nothing special. A decent place if you can't find something else. I'd equate this to something like McDonald's. 3 star: I enjoyed my experience there and would go back to try or do more things there. 4 star: I loved it and would be excited to go back. I'd also recommend it to a friend. 5 star: A real gem of a place. A must on anyone's list.

I have lived in the area for over twenty years and was only introduced to Joe's Cafe a month ago, and I feel cheated. Cafe is off the main drag and hidden out of sight, but definitely a local hot spot (to those who have found it). Small place with family style or bar seating. Be ready to wait for a table and if in the main room to have people waiting right over where you're eating. However, don't be discouraged the pizza is worth the wait. Homemade meatballs are delicious and can be ordered as an appetizer. BBQ chicken pizza and anything with the pesto is great to order. They also have a wide variety of other pasta/italian dishes. Haven't test them yet but I'm eager to get back to Joe's and try more of their menu! Parking can be difficult to find, they do have a private lot but there are limited spaces. Street parking is available but depending on what time you go be prepared to have to walk to get to the restaurant. It is in a residential location, beware of private lots/reserved residential spaces.

Just had the the most CRAZY GREAT mushroom salad! The mix of sweet and savory was ultimate perfection. The pizzas are thin crust heaven. A hidden gem!
(5)Kyrie B.
I absolutely LOVE Joe's pizza. They have great Italian food at unbelievable prices. The atmosphere in this restaurant is adorable and cozy. The food is fast and delicious....but UNFORTUNATELY, the service is often TERRIBLE. I love the food and atmosphere so much that I keep trying to give it a chance...but every time I leave there I tell myself "I am never going back there again....the service was terrible." The restaurant actually seems over staffed. The servers are often standing around (which is fine.... But..) I've never seen such slow service. They take forever to come over. They take forever to bring you drinks (if they actually remember which is rare), they never come to check on the food. You literally have to beg them for the check, even after waiting patiently for 45 minutes. There's been times where I've made eye contact with services for a check and they just look away. I'm totally torn because I love the food. But the service is intolerable. I don't know what's more traumatizing, the servers attitudes towards customers or the time it takes them to do their job. Food ***** five stars Service * barely even one star
(3)Jim M.
Went Sat night with another couple. Have not been here in 46 years. Really...when I was in high school. Guess what. They still make a great pie. Crust not flat bread thin. A bit thicker with a nice chew. Also has mussels. excellent food. Got there at 6:45 sat at 7:00. We had no problem with that but I could see if you were not aware of this it would be a problem. Especially since you are basically hanging in the aisles or jammed bar. But it is part of the Joe's experience. Intimacy is tough to find here. But if you want to people watch and talk with others they have it. I won't wait 46 years again to come back.
(5)Paula P.
Consider it a right of passage when the locals stare you down. The pizza is #1 in town. Decor is fugly and you are squished into your table like a sardine...but if you embrace it, you'll find it charming.
(5)Ranny D.
Amazing. Definitely the best pizza in the region. Order anything in the menu with no hesitations.
(5)Rhea B.
Love the atmosphere. A real, old-time place. Good food of the bar variety, good service. I will be back many times.
(5)José T.
I love going to Joe's. The pizza is very tasty and the house salad always hits the spot. In the winter the tables near the doors are unpleasant because people hold them open forever and you freeze your butt off. But overall the place is a great value for what you get!
(4)Karin N.
Can't beat the spag and balls on Wednesdays! Love Joe's house salad and soup. The worst I can say is it is often crowded and seating can take a bit...parking not great either.
(4)Dave T.
so I've heard so much about this place we finally decided to try it last nite (3/11/14) ...there are only two words that can truly express our experience...NEVER AGAIN!!! ...for fans of this "restaurant" who think this is great Italian food, you need to get out more often!!! my son had a pizza that looked and tasted like it came out of a box, my wife had tortellini soup that had broth that tasted like something you'd find in a ramen noodle cup and I had the lasagna that was palatable but not worth the $14.95 they nailed me for!!! ...and the service??? HORRIBLE!!! ...I've had better service at a Friendly's!!! maybe this was a great restaurant in the past but todays version is pure CRAP!!!
(1)E. M.
I really like the atmosphere here, and they make great pizza. It is always bustling with long-time regulars, and feels very cozy.
(5)Sean O.
Oooooh, champion value. Great old-style atmosphere. Pizza is marvelous, and the meatball flavorful. And it's good value. Take that Northampton!
(5)Bethany S.
Joe's was my Monday night staple for almost a year, and I still try to get down there at least once or twice a month. You'll know it by the sombrero! Be prepared for a wait -- there are almost always people waiting outside before Joe's opens, and between 6pm and 8pm it's packed. Joe's offers a special Sunday through Thursday nights, so if you're going for the first time, go on a Wednesday night and try the $5 spaghetti and meatballs. The meatballs are the size of your fist and are the BEST I've ever tasted. Joe's pizza is also excellent, offered in a wide variety of sizes, from the one-person-sized "Little Joe" to a family-sized version. Try the white spinach pizza, or just the plain cheese. Other recommendations: the baked ziti and the chicken marsala. Take a couple friends and look for the sombrero!
(5)Max H.
Warning: If the guy on the sign for a restaurant is wearing a sombrero and it's not Mexican food you may want to go somewhere else. So where to begin... My day wasn't going too great as it was; my wife and I were about to move here and we had been house hunting all day for the last 2 days so we just wanted to sit down and get some good food into our bellies. To top it off my mother in-law and her boyfriend came up to help/give us unsolicited advice on houses like it was their money that would be buying it. Since I wasn't familiar with where to go we looked on Yelp to see what they recommended. This place had great reviews so we decided to give it a shot. The place was so packed that we had to wait outside for 35-40 minutes before we could get a table. After being seated it took an extremely long time to get our drinks much less see our waitress. I got an angel hair pasta with mussels in a garlic white wine sauce and everyone else shared a pizza. We must have been waiting for over 45 minutes, I was starting to think maybe I was indeed quite famous and I was getting punked by Ashton Kutcher... everyone else around me seemed to be enjoying themselves. Not once did our waitress apologize for the long wait... and she failed epically at keeping our drinks filled while we waited. Finally the food arrived and we started eating. I love garlic but it tasted like they misread the recipe and put 3 heads of garlic vice 3 cloves it was atrocious. The "famous" thin crust tasted like something I would be disappointed with if I bought it in the frozen aisle of a grocery store much less a highly touted pizzeria. After we were done with over half the pizza left the waitress asked if we would like a box for the rest and I practically shouted NOOOO (like if your holding on to someones hand at the edge of a cliff and you can't hold on any longer... yep just like that). Without batting an eye she gave me the check not even thinking to ask how the food was. I felt like I was a homeless person in Tiffany's asking to see their most expensive ring.... how you can be that inattentive without it being intentional is beyond me but I will never go there again and may even do drive bys with a bullhorn trying to steer as many people away from this travesty as I can.

Ate here last night, and wow! Last weekend, my friends, in disbelief that I nor many others had ever eaten at Joe's, insisted on getting together a group dinner. Completely blew my mind. It's an adorable little hole-in-the-wall joint right outside downtown Northampton with fun kitsch college decorations (though it's definitely not a college-kid place, much more a family restaurant). The tables are tucked in every corner of this (relatively small) building, and while the waitstaff may not be the quickest, they're super friendly. Though, to be fair, the place looks like it's almost always packed, which accounts for the wait times (around 45mins for us)--they were probably packed to the gills in the kitchen. Wait times aside, the food more than made up for it. I didn't have the pizza (that's for next time), but instead opted for one of their pasta meals (Baked Ziti), which was heavenly. It was smaller than I had originally expected, but that actually made it the perfect size--hooray for pasta folk who actually understand portion sizes--though it was so good I wished I had some to take home. My boyfriend got their Spaghetti and Meatballs (their $5 Wednesday Special), and couldn't stop talking about it. After trying a tiny piece of their melt-in-your-mouth meatball, I'm inclined to try it next week. No hard decisions yet, but I'm thinking this may replace Spoleto and Viva as my go-to Northampton italian restaurant. Love it.
(5)AM P.
Service was better the second time around. Very attentive and quick. We were one of the first tables in the restaurant, though.
(4)Richard W.
Joe's is everything that an American Italian restaurant should be. Cozy, slightly worn decor, very friendly staff, and always packed with unpretentious local folk. The antithesis of "noho", this is "hamp" at its best. The food is delightfully greasy and delicious, and the portion sizes are comically gigantic. Joe's might seem to be in the average price range, but for me it's downright cheap, as I'm almost never able to eat more than half my order, and therefore have a tasty lunch the next day at no extra cost. Oh, and try the veal parmesan grinder.
(5)Rob S.
If you love neighborhood places that make their own food and fight the "chain" feel with every inch of their soul...Joe's is a must!!!! It's small and not a great spot to bring an active 3yr old at the dinner rush (I do it all the time and curse myself) - but let me tell you...GO!!! It will make you remember what is was like to go out to eat before the chains took over the world!
(5)Jenn X.
We went back as the pizza is good to give them a second chance. This time some of the staff recognized us and mentioned they had not seen us for a while. We discussed the previous visit and they corrected the situation. We have been back twice and both times with good service. The bottom line for Joes: go early or get take out, get the pizza and avoid other fare on the menu.
(4)Maureen J.
Went to joes tonight 1-30-13 walked in with my wife and two grown kids stood by the waitress station while she ignored us and two other parties walked in and got on some sort of wait list that I knew nothing about and the one party that signed up ahead of me said I should have made reservations with four people as I looked up on the wall at a article that said no reservations I'm going to myself what the fuck are you talking about fuck the greeter at joes that place sucks on top of that it was my ninetieth anniversary we went the fishhook and it was very good

This is an excellent college-town pizza and Italian restaurant, suitable for families, students, friends, and romance. Loud and proud, cozy and warm. Great pizza selections and good, friendly service.

Went for the first time and the last. Salad was too soaked with dressing they should not saturate it. Pizza was so so as was the service.
(2)Peter E.
This place deserves 5 stars for the ambience, but I don't like giving 5 stars, and their pizza is only four star worthy. (ya can't give 5 stars without it going to their heads)

You want to go someplace where the meal is real? Here's where you go. italian is the specialty. There's a wait but it's worth it. It's that old fashioned restaurant with wood panelling and red leather booths. You will need to take your dinner home because you won't be able to eat it all. It's hot, it's fresh, they make every dish as ordered. No pre-made stuff. Family atmosphere, All things good.

YUM! I felt like I was transported from Northampton to Brooklyn upon walking in. The Italian bread was hot and fresh, the salad was fresh and tasty, and the spaghetti was enough for several meals AND it was delicious to boot!!! Loved the decor and the checkered table cloths. The pizza looked really good, too. Maybe next time!!!

This is, I would argue, the best pizza in Northampton and the surrounding area. The pizza is thin crust, always perfectly done, and the kalamata olives are one of the best options. I have been coming here for years and it is worth the often thirty- or forty-minute wait. Sunday is a mussels special, which is very good, and Tuesday is Little Joe day, meaning $4.50 personal pizzas (plus toppings), which is pretty amazing. I appreciate the local brews (BBC) on draught. The service is curt -- it's always very, very busy -- but I have always been very satisfied with it. Meanwhile, the sixty-year-old murals of Argentinian cowboys all around Joe's gives it kitsch as well as a reminder of its staying power.

I highly recommend visiting on one of their specials nights. Even their salads are good. I was expecting the kind of pathetic, iceberg lettuce fare you usually get at pizza joints, but was pleasantly surprised to be presented with a *real* salad full of delicious veggies. Yum.

Seriously locals what is with this place? It ain't that great. When I was there i got the garlic bread and lasagna...now I know this is not what Joe's is known for but never the less if this place was decent they should be able to pull that off, right? Nope - the lasagna was limp like a wet noodle - in other words weak. This thing was the deflated tire of lasagna. What a waste. Where was the filling? Did you guys run out? I gotta say the garlic bread was excellent and my beer was cold. I did enjoy the atmosphere. It was really cozy just one of those places you can really relax at - a real dive (I love dive's). I really wanted to like this restaurant and was just disappointed. I will give this place another go and order their pizza or spaghetti and meatballs.

One of the stalwart vestiges hanging on from a pre-sushified, pre- ultra precious Northampton. Tucked away on Market Street in a dingy, dark, low, old building, they claim to have served over a million pizzas, and I'd absolutely believe it. The logo on the sign is not supposed to be Mexican, but an Argentinean Gaucho, essentially South American cowboys of Italian descent. One of the cheapest, most satisfying places to eat in Northampton. Every weeknight features a different special, from personal sized pizzas to spaghetti and meatballs for about $5 if I remember correctly, and mussels every sunday (too bad I'm allergic to shellfish). You can feel your arteries harden as you eat here, and you'll love every bite of it. The pizza is greasy-good. The garlic bread (order small - small is large enough for 2-3) would be best described as a butter sponge. Wash it all down with a Berkshire Steel Rail, or a Wachusett IPA, and you're in heaven. Don't miss this if ever spending time in Northampton. Not fancy, but one of the absolute best places in town.

Everybody that comes to NOHO has to go to Joe's at least once. Why? Because it's an institution. We have been going there off and on for years and the food is good. They have an anti Pasti that's decent enough and a Linquica pizza you can't find anywhere that's as good. But the service can be a little slow and it can be a little crowded and the wait staff (depending on who you get) can be a little cranky. SO once and see for yourself.
(3)Andrew B.
Joe's is one of the best pizza places in the area. It's a little small and everyone in town and the the colleges knows about it so expect a wait that can start to go down the street on busy nights. When you finally get your table start your meal with the cheesy garlic bread. It's so cheesy and buttery it's amazing. From there all I've ever had was their pizza so I can't comment on the pasta, but the pizza is delicious. It's a good size and not ultra filling, so you'll be able to finish it all and not have to worry about boxing up your leftovers and still feel full. I forget exactly what their prices are but they are reasonable. Joe's Cafe earns it's self a 4 / 5.
(4)Andrei B.
Northampton's best institution of community and food. Great neighborhood spot with a classic, old school feel, reasonably priced and super tasty pizzas, and a bunch of good people.
(5)Ajay S.
Divey but very good pizza.

My husband and I rarely get a kid free night out. But when we do, we always go to Joe's. We love the old school -nothing- ever -changes atmosphere. We have both been going to Joe's since we were small children. Joe's never disappoints. We stopped at Joe's on Saturday night, it was seriously one of the best meals of my life. Fried mozzarella is a must every time we go. Crispy ooy gooey deliciousness...The salad was fresh, crisp and delicious. My husband loves the roasted red peppers that come on the salad. I got the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken added. My husband got the chicken saltenbocca. Both our meals were piping hot when brought to the table. Both meals were equally scrumptious. We also had enough leftovers for another whole meal. Oh and the garlic bread! Buttery, cheesey heaven. Thanks Joe's for a great meal as always!
(5)Kristen S.
The only reason I am not giving Joe's a full five stars, is because of the horrible service. I have eaten here before and have never been treated so poorly till last night. Our waitress was a sour, miserable person who ignored us and our requests. We were served dirty wine glasses and left to fend for ourselves. I even had to get up to go to the bar for ice when our waitress, after ten min, had still not brought us any for the wine which was barely chilled. Our waitress only came by once during the hour we were there. Fortunately, one of the other waitresses noticed we were trying to get someone's attention, despite our original waitress standing in the corner playing "thumby war" with a coworker, and was able to bring our check. We couldn't get out of the restaurant fast enough. At one point, I wondered if I knew our waitress and perhaps had slighted her in the past and therefore deserve such bad treatment. But no, I hadnt, because I would remember her rotten face and attitude. I will return, eventually, because the food is so good, but should this individual be my waitress again, I will leave the establishment. I'm that upset.

Holy pizza heaven, batman. This Northampton, MA gem is definitely going to be a staple in my trips with the man-friend home to visit his family. This is one of those... eclectic hole-in-the-wall places that you know has a long standing reputation in the community for being amazing. The portion sizes are generous and the pizza crust is to die for. Seriously, how do they get it so thin and incredibly crispy??!? They have a wide range of specialty pizza options as well as other amazing dishes and appetizers. The fried calamari was perfectly seasoned and fried to perfection... not greasy at all. Again, I ask you...............HOW DO THEY DO IT? I can't wait to go back
(5)Liliana C.
The pizza that we've had here has been amazing--thin crust and delicious. Definitely greasy, but oh-so-enjoyable. Well-complemented by the BBC beer they have on tap. Also, as per suggestion of previous yelpers, go for the cheesy bread! It oozes butter.
(5)Matthew G.
I love Joe's. Great Italian-American family joint like the kind I went to when I was a kid. Thin crust pub pizza. I always get olive and pepperoni and a Joe's house salad. It's not a sophisticated type of dining experience. It's a down home, cozy, old fashioned place with simple, delicious food and nice service and reasonable price.

I'm a fan! I have been going here for a few years, when my ski buddy first introduced me to the place as a stopover on the way home from the mountains in Vermont. Northampton has many great restaurant choices, from cool little hole-in-the-wall joints to fancy dining rooms. We've eaten at many of them, and had never heard of "Joes." Now I think we eat at Joe's more than any other place in town. Many other reviewers here had a problem with the atmosphere, even if they didn't phrase it that way. But it is something to be considered. This is not the place to go for a quiet night out, or an intimate dinner. This is a hard-core Italian joint. A rough-and-tumble free for all of a restaurant. If you're willing to put up with it, Joe's will reward you with some superb Italian food. This was an old store or market or something a billion years ago, so it is divided up into four "dining rooms." Two of them are quite small, one is downright tiny; you and four other tables. Intimate probably isn't the right word. Speak softly, listen intently, and you'll hear some great stuff from the people sitting two feet away from you. Tucked in the corner, you kinda feel like the kids relegated to the folding card table at Thanksgiving. As for getting a good table, timing is everything at Joe's. We race back from the slopes on Sunday evening and try to make it before 6:30. Anything after that and you can plan on standing around in the very cramped, crowded, dark bar/dining room, as the hostess(es) give tables to people who came in ten minutes after you did. Be vigilante...we've been told it would 30 minutes for a table, but were then summoned to a booth before we could even order a beer. Hint: if you have a choice, don't get a table near either of the front doors. At the curbside, the two main dining rooms open directly onto the street. IOW, no airlock, no entranceway...when someone opens the door, you're going to get blasted with cold air in winter, warm car exhaust in summer. The fact that there are two front doors is another problem, as some people enter into the second dining room and wonder why the hostess doesn't notice them. The main entrance brings you to the bar side, where the late-comers are hanging around waiting for their tables. It is so small that, when crowded, you'll likely have people's butts hanging over your table while you eat. But you know what? It's still a great place! The point is, GO EARLY. Joe's gets crowded, and for good reason. The food. Joe's food is why you put up with the bullshit. Certainly not the decor, which hasn't been updated since sometime around World War II. On Sundays, they do a Zuppa de Mussels special which is awesome, and cheap. The linguine and white clam sauce is exquisite. The chicken parm is perfect, and you'll take half of it home. The pizza's are the very definition of the pie. If you let the loud, busy dining room get you down, you won't like this place. You eat at Joes for the food. And don't forget Joe's House Salad. One of the highlights, and the first thing we order every time we go. Tucked down a side-street that most Northampton visitors probably don't even know exists, Joe's is a sweet spot. This is five-star food in a one-star location, so I'm averaging it out. Eat at Joe's. As long as you know what you're getting into.
(3)Steve W.
The pizza is excellent. Avoid the pasta. The meatballs were piled on the pasta in the middle. Proportions were wrong. Sauce too spicy.
(3)Katrina C.
Everything we were looking for: friendly atmosphere, quick service, nice bar, huge portions, didn't feel rushed despite the long line of waiting customers. This place was simply a great, old-school restaurant. Highly recommend!
(4)Ashley N.
Amazing! My favorite restaurant in Northampton. I've never been disappointed with my food. Delicious pizza options. The specials are always a great deal. I highly recommend chicken Parmesan, lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, and the house salad.
(5)Robert J.
I've been going to Joe's for 35 yes and I love it! Get a pizza a house salad and a few beers you're all set for a night on the town. Waitstaff is down to earth and friendly, the place is local and has a lot of Hamp people always there so its nice to see familiar faces. You might have to wait a bit if you have a party more than 4 so keep that in mind. You know its good if you have to wait. Also get the zuppa mussels in red sauce!
(5)Laura T.
OMG!!!! Awesome!!!! I went for the first time last night!!!!! MMMMM Pizza!!!, Delicious and crispy thin crust, Giant Home made mozzarella "sticks", The fried Calamari with the homemade sauce; wonderful. The waitress, a super nice girl made us feel welcome. Going back!
(5)John B.
Subconsciously ordered a Bud...not even sure how that came out of my mouth, Joe's is just that kinda place. Regular pie was OK, but the Buffalo chicken pie looked like a dog's dinner.
(3)A Z.
A traditional Italian place. good pizza and pasta selection. friendly staff
(3)Alex H.
Best place to get pizza and pasta. This isn't fancy and it's certainly local. It gets 4 stars just because it was my local pizza place while I lived in town. Holds a soft spot in my heart. This is no Spoleto's with the fancy wine menu and chic Italian food. This is down home pasta, pizza and beer with friends. Win!
(4)Courtney R.
Joe's Pizza is a cozy little "dive" restaurant. Great pizza, great fresh salads, crispy fries and wicked good garlic bread...hard to get a seat on busy nights, however. Great weekday specials and the service is standard. Bathrooms are small and the booths and tables are a little rugged. Could use a bit of an update. However, Joe's is a good standby in Northampton for a quick casual bite.
(3)Jenny J.
I've been eating here my whole life. The place is funky and crowded with old and worn decor (been the same for as long as I can remember), but the food is fantastic. Yes, the springs poke into your butt from beneath their aged vinyl upholstery, and the murals on the walls are faded, but the food makes it all worth it. Don't just stick to spaghetti and meatballs and garlic bread because, while they're great, Joe's does lots of things surprisingly well. Grilled asparagus is one of our faves, the salads are so much more than your standard iceberg fare, the piccata is seriously awesome, and the mussels.... ahhhh, the mussels! Actually, they need their own paragraph :) Sunday night is mussel night at Joe's. The wait is long for a reason... You can choose from red sauce (chunky garlicky fresh tomato) or white sauce (white wine garlicky lemony). We, of course, get at least one of each! They arrive in big saute pans and we enjoy them family style, soaking up every last bit of sauce with hunks of warm bread. In fact, we've been known to go at the red sauce with spoons and eat it like a chunky tomato soup. Yeah, it's that good. Don't worry, everyone in the restaurant will understand. If you get any funny looks, that's how you can pick out the tourists. Just smile and hope they'll think this place is too weird and won't come back, and maybe that will cut down the wait a little. If you're in town on Sunday night and you like mussels, you've gotta give Joe's a try. Pretty soon you'll be a Sunday-night regular, happily contorting in your booth to avoid the springs.

I'm giving this 3 and a half stars, mostly because the pizza is good for Mass. but not really that amazing in the general scheme of things. One of the better pizzas I've had in Massachusetts. Thin crust, pretty good toppings (although the sausage wasn't very flavorful) and fairly friendly service. The place was pretty busy when a friend and I arrived at 5pm but we didn't have to wait more than a couple of minutes. Our food came out fairly quickly. The prices are fair, not too pricey for a sit down place and it definitely has a local vibe with lots of families eating there. Definitely get the cheesy garlic bread! Unless you're afraid of a lot of oil and butter in which case, you probably shouldn't come here.

Joe's is..... A real "old" Neighborhood Italian Restaurant The maker of the best thin Crust Pizza, end of discussion (Roberto's right down the street is second) Packed, every night Joe's Isn't A place you know about until a local tells you about it, or takes you there Fancy, organized, new. A place to take kids when it's busy. A gem that has been in this Old Italian neighborhood longer than most of the houses. They do food the way they want, and if you don't like it, leave (no-one cares) My Great Grandmother used to go here. Pizza is thin, has just the right amount of toppings, slightly overcooked (it's supposed to be), and addictive. The walls are painted with frescos of gringo's (Read the menu for the story) and it's so packed that that you'll find people waiting between the tables for a place to sit. How the wait staff gets from one end to the other is anyone's guess. I lived in the building behind Joes for a few years, and never got tired of the smell permeating into my bedroom window. There are two "old school" pizza places in this town and the town is divided. Either you like Joe's or Roberto's. They both make thin crust, and they are very different. If you don't like this place, you'll like the other, and vice versa. Must Try - Pesto Primavera
(5)Jennifer B.
Joe's is good and frequently extremely crowded. It is not my favorite pizza place in the world but def the best option in Northampton. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable but when the bar is crowded people wait beside the tables which can be annoying when you are trying to eat. The ingredients on the pizza is very good but I think the cheese could be better. I like the thin crust on the pizza and the sauce is excellent. You can call up for to go which I appreciate. I am also a big fan of their boneless buffalo wings which are very tasty. The staff here rocks and is very friendly.
(4)Keith B.
I've been coming here since I was a kid. It hasn't changed much at all -- which is a good thing. No frills (but memorable) atmosphere and delicious pizza. Not everyone loves it, but you might.
(5)Moranda B.
Typical italian food. We ordered A LOT. We ordered some sort of salad with sliced eggs, pepperoni, olives, etc. It was good and there was a nice balance of veggies, not too much lettuce! The mussels with white sauce were divine. The garlic bread was super buttery and garlicky and oh so delicious. The spaghetti needed salt REALLY badly. They give you a huge plate but there isn't nearly enough sauce for all the spaghetti. They should make their plates smaller or they should put more sauce! The sauce also needed more seasoning in general in the sauce. We got buffalo chicken pizza which was okay except the chicken seemed like it had been cooked with no flavoring and then saved for a while, it had no flavor and was dry. It needed to be seasoned even though it was on the pizza. Overall it was pretty good though.
(3)D. B.
I've been here a half dozen times or so and have never had a bad meal there. I usually get the pizza and they are delicious! Thin crust, light sauce, fresh toppings...... Just an all-around good pizza.
(5)J S.
Ate here for the first time tonight. We were able to get there early (5:30) so we only had a 15 minute wait. This place is really neat on the inside. However there's really no good place to wait for your table which makes it feel small, cramped and inconvenient but in a strange way that just adds to it's charm. We ordered two pasta dishes and a pizza. Both pasta dishes were ok but the pizza on the other hand was very good. Next time we're not going to bother with the pasta and just order pizza, lots of pizza.
(4)Isa D.
hmmmm.....maybe it's because I'm from New Jersey......I don't know - just wasn't overly impressed - found it to be "not awesome". Prices are great - food was just ok. I had a dish with scallops and pasta - husband had the lasagna. Both were just ok. Maybe the pizza is better? My husband had the garlic bread and really liked that. We will probably give it another try since it is such a local favorite.

Every visit I make to Joe's is served with a heaping helping of nostalgia. See the end of that brick row house behind the restaurant in the pic taken from the street? Yours Truly once dwelled within that building, as well as have untold hundreds of other cash-strapped home-sharing collegians over who knows how long. Each night when money was tight - as was usually the case at the time - it was exquisite torture to be downwind from the pizza ovens at Joe's. Then when cash WAS in hand it was a sweet place to while away a night in with a friend or three in tow. Oh yeah, the food was fantastic too. Whoever posted that Joe's "needs an update" doesn't get it. There's no need to change anything when what you have is good. Not a thing there was different than from when I'd had unrewarded drooling set off on countless nights all those years ago, except for a different ceiling and light fixtures. The dubiously authentic, let alone dubiously PC, wall art BELONGS there. So does the sign in front. Since I was saving my stomach for Paul & Elizabeth's the day I stopped in, I reluctantly confined my consumption at Joe's to a couple of beers. But the plates which passed me all looked to contain good eats and lots of 'em. Everybody there was enjoying themselves, too, including the supposedly inept and unsociable employees. I would've put five stars on this review, but between not having anything to eat and realizing that nostalgia came into play I stopped m'self.

I'd heard there would be a long wait, but wanted to try the pizza, so I thought it would be smart to call ahead and order for pickup. I was told twenty minutes. I arrived in twenty minutes, sidled my way around all the people standing and sitting at the bar, and finally got an employee's attention (after many polite attempts) to let her know I was there to pick it up. I paid, and then proceeded to wait, standing, for a really long time. I'm not sure if I was forgotten about, or if they were just really busy in the kitchen (the front of the house was certainly busy!), but when I was again able to ask after 30 minutes of additional waiting (and trying to catch a server's eye), I then waited another 10 minutes for my pizza. I would have just left had I not already paid and then been made to wait so long. Not sure why a simple cheese pizza required an hour wait, standing in the crowded room, even after I called ahead. No server ever said "sorry" or offered a discount or anything, and other patrons even commented on how long I had been waiting. Definitely would not return or recommend.

Favorite place! Get the fried mozzarella for an app. Antipasta salad for the fam & Little Joes House Special pizza for dinner. Favorite daily special... Mussels! Bravely ventured from my usual house special & went with the BBQ chicken pizza...not disappointed. GO!
(5)K C.
Ordered a sausage and mushroom pie to go, and also an Italian sub. Great sandwich and the prices are amazing. WI return and try to eat in. Nice place, service was fine!

Joe's Cafe is a quintessential Italian-American red sauce joint. Naugahyde booths line the sides of the small, dark dining room. Faded murals of what appear to be early nineteenth century Spanish settlers engaging native Americans in the desert southwest adorn the walls (if that seems somewhat incongruous, I thought so too). There's a noisy bar in an adjoining room. The clientele sports a lot of gray hair, although younger families with children are frequently in attendance too. College kids and hipsters are nowhere to be found, preferring no doubt the trendier eateries a short distance away in the center of town. The service leaves something to be desired. The staff is very good at ignoring you; it's as if you become invisible whenever you want or need their attention. When I approached the hostess upon arriving to inquire about getting a table, she deliberately kept her back to me for several minutes while taking orders over the phone. I say deliberately because no matter how I maneuvered to try to get into her line of sight, she twisted and turned just enough to keep me out of it. Anyone watching might have thought we were dancing the rumba. (As an aside, I've always felt a customer who's physically present should take precedence over someone on the phone, but surprisingly that's almost never the case.) And when I was done eating, I practically had to stand up and do jumping jacks in the aisle to get the waitress's attention for the check. On a warm afternoon, I was told they don't serve iced tea, which I found odd. Pizza seems to be quite popular here, although it's not to my taste. The crust is of the super-thin, cracker-like variety. I like a crust with a little body, a little chew -- like the kind at Pizza Paradiso up the street. I also can't recommend the spaghetti and meatballs. The spaghetti (capellini, actually) was mushy, as were the meatballs, which tasted vaguely livery (some recipes for meatballs do call for the addition of ground chicken liver, but not any recipe I would make). The sauce was little more than diced tomatoes in juice, which slid off the pasta and collected in a watery pool at the bottom of the plate. And it was sour, as if it had been spiked with vinegar. I do like the house salad -- a big plate of mixed greens topped with Bac-o bits, dusted with parmesan cheese (the kind from the green can; emphasis on "dust"), with a tangy, mayonnaise-based dressing. The best part of the salad is a big slice of an extraordinarily good out-of-season tomato (I wonder where they get them). Other things on the menu I've tried and enjoyed are the chicken parmesan and the lasagna -- both worth ordering, especially if they're on special, as each is once a week. But the bread served with dinner is mediocre at best -- insubstantial and cottony, it seems to go stale as soon as it's set in front of you. Prices here are moderate -- not bad for Northampton. But if you're in the mood for spaghetti, I'll bet you can make it better yourself at home.
(2)Jessica K.
I have to agree with Darryl C. - Joe's is a Northampton institution that my husband and I frequent whenever we visit friends here (and by the way haters, we're also from Jersey). The food is out-of-this-world (the thin crust pizza is beyond) and the atmosphere is fun, lively and totally worth the wait. As far as the service goes, I've never seen waitresses work harder. They literally never stop running and are always friendly and cool. We;ll be back again next month and will definitely be dining at Joe's.
