Decent sandwiches with an unsolicited side of endless personal anecdotes from the owners Trutony's Deli is a tiny Italian-American delicatessen located in the Langley Variety store on a residential block of Newton just off Route 9. If you don't know the neighborhood, finding this place can be a challenge, thanks to a nearby off-kilter street sign. But if only for nostalgic reaons, it's worth seeking out: Trutony's is the sort of idiosyncratic local joint they're not minting anymore. When mom-and-pop businesses like this disappear, they don't come back. Inevitably, their replacements are soulless franchise outlets. The Langley's variety-store wares are a bit thin, so the main reason to visit is the deli case, loaded with a broad selection of Boar's Head deli meats, some housemade salads, and hot entrées like chicken parmesan ($8) and stuffed shells ($6.50). I found the generous signature sandwiches the most appealing, each piled high with cold cuts methodically sliced to order. The Tony's Special ($7) is overstuffed with spicy sopressata, copa, provolone, and roasted red peppers. The Honey Bee ($7) boasts a thick stack of turkey, ham, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and honey mustard. A chicken-salad sandwich ($6) is simple, not overdressed, and very good. These can be had on rolls -- plain, unsalted Tuscan or sesame-seed-encrusted braided ones -- that owner Tony picks up daily from North End bakeries. Both are authentically Italian-American, thus a little softer and less crusty than I prefer, but they're fresh and better than machine-cut breads and wraps. The customary assortment of mass-market chips and soft drinks are available. If these sandwiches don't sound innovative, it's because they aren't. The real appeal of Trutony's is the inimitable flavor of a shop where the one place to sit looks like a busy family's kitchen table strewn with newspapers, and there are daytime junk programs on the tube. If it's slow, the owners are likely to sit across from you and share extended (I mean endless) anecdotes about their alleged close personal friendships with local sports stars, including Jason Varitek, a neighbor and customer. That's the kind of homey accompaniment to your lunchtime sandwich that you won't ever get at Quiznos. Depending on your tolerance for other people's brushes-with-fame stories, that might or might not be a virtue.

I have now ordered from Trutony's Deli at least half a dozen times and am convinced that this is the best option for lunch/sandwiches in the Newton Center area. Good customer service, free delivery, incredible tuna/bread/meatballs/etc, huge sandwiches, reasonably priced, and super QUICK! I much prefer Trutony's to the other sandwich/sub shops in the area.

Here's the deal - when you walk in the door, you're an old friend. Come once a week or more, you're family. The sandwiches, while good, aren't the reason to come to this deli. Tony makes his calzones and pizzas by hand, with his own special recipe dough that's out of this world.

Isn't it always the little hidden secret that is delicious gem? Tonight I went to a catered event by Trutony's. His lasagna rumored to be his claim to fame, I have to agree! Chicken parm, not traditional but still very tasty. Meatballs all beef , over all job we'll done! I look forward to tasting the menu on a more personal note. Keep a look out for the green awning, left side towards route 9.

Found this place on yelp. While definitely a mom and pop the place skeeved me out because of the cleanliness and how they prepared the food. The sandwich was fine, something you could make in your own kitchen. Not a fan.

Honestly in this area. The small area near route 9. This is AMAZING. Sandwiches are huge and stuffed with deliciousness. I work at the atrium mall, and employees who used to work here would tell me to go to this place... and it doesnt easily show up on google so I had to find it. And it was worth it. My sandwich is freshly made delicious. Everything I could have asked for during my lunch break. Thanks Tony!

Excited to find out they use Boar's Head meats but it went downhill fast. The woman who works here coughed repeatedly into her hands as she made my sandwich WITH NO GLOVES ON. The health board should really inspect their practices. This is disgusting. When I got home I opened my sandwich (no intention on eating it) to find the woman had a few strands of her hair fall into my sub. I'm not kidding. I wish I was.

simple and delicious. they use high quality boar's head meat, and all of the breads are soft and fresh. the first time, i got a turkey sandwich on the braided roll with spicy mustard, lettuce, and tomato. they use a really nice grainy mustard, and instead of using regular sliced tomatoes, they make a chunky tomato spread with herbs which i really enjoyed. the roll was soft and fresh, although the second time i switched to wheat bread and liked it better since it was not nearly as large of a portion (i don't like sandwiches to be too bready). i also added cucumbers, pickles, and onions the second time. my boyfriend got the "newton" which was roast beef, horseradish, lettuce, tomato, and cheese...gone before i had a chance to ask for a bite. tony was friendly, which made the experience that much better.

My official update - awesome. By the way - Trutony's.. owned by.. Trudy and Tony. Hence.. the name. I still haven't had the Rollazoni or whatever it is, but Tony makes some calzone-esque dish that is supposed to be fantastic. Round two - Tony's Special and the Chix Salad - which they proclaim to be the best in town. And.. it is! It really, really is. Damn good chix salad. Downfall though - those fluffy sesame seeded rolls. Does anyone really like them? And why? And onto the Tony Special... this one comes right out of sandwich heaven. Not only does it weigh about 12 pounds - but it is loaded with incredible, authentic italian meats, cheese and.. a magical dressing. Their 'secret' formula made me dive head first into this sandwich. It was something else. This one is served on MUCH better bread - as you can see in the pictures. One of these sandwiches could feed two (hungry) people. It was heavenly. ESPECIALLY if you save half of it in the fridge and eat it cold the next day .. everything sorta melds together. MMmm. Oh - it looks like they have some great entree's ready for catering, too - pastas, meatballs, etc etc. Will be back to sample even more.

I recently discovered this place after I heard a few people talking about it and how big the sandwiches were. Now I've been all around Newton to places like Sandwich Works, Citrio, Bakers Best...and all those sandwiches but are overpriced for what you get. Trutony's doesn't cut any corners. The Tony's Special, an Italian sandwich, gives you loads of deli meats mixed with the perfect red peppers to give it that extra kick. The bread is hand made, the meat is cut right in front of you, and Trudy and Tony will give you a good conversation about the Sox while they're making your sandwich. And the kicker - you probably won't need more than $7.00 for an excellent meal. This is the definition of a Mom and Pop place and I can't say enough good things about this place. Go here before running off to those trendy village places...you won't be disappointed!

Love this place!! When Tony makes the sandwiches you can tell and feel the love and passion they have. First time I was there it was maybe 5 years ago when I worked near their shop, now I drive out of my way to go here. I got my husband hooked and even though he has tried a couple of other sandwiches they make he ends up drooling about the Tony's Special!! As if their subs need anything else ... The cherry on top was meeting V-tek twice!!! Again 5 years ago.

Great subs!! Perfect take out place. No ambiance. Random bills and pieces of paper laying around at first made me question leaving. But Italian sub was outstanding
