Absolutely awesome. From the drink selection, to the interesting assortment of charcuterie offerings, to the really fantastic salads. Everything about Sycamore is awesome. I had one of the best dishes I have ever had. It was a chorizo croquetta. Talk about comfort food. Oh man, I'm having chorizo croquetta dreams. What surprised me the most were the deserts. They were light, delicately flavored and really complimentary to the meal. Okay - truth be known, I only partook in one desert (flourless chocolate cake), but it was AWESOME. And, I don't eat deserts (by-and-large). I will definitely be back. I loved the overall style, scope and experience at the restaurant. Oh, the service was great!

My favorite restaurant and my wife's too. We like to go out to dinner. Have tried l'espalier, number 9 park, craigie on main, just to get an idea of what we're into. But we always end up back an Sycamore. Food is always excellent, service is always personable and generous. We like to sit at the bar. Scott and Zach both make for an experience that is above and beyond what you'd find at restaurants costing much more. Go here. And get the beignets for dessert.

Another great meal at Sycamore! We were lucky to grab a 5:30 table on a Friday night at the last minute. We had the citrus salad with grilled avocado, pistachios, and black olive tapenade which was amazing. Then we had the fluke with vidalia onions and winter greens which was lovely, though I didn't taste the marcona almonds which were supposedly included. We had the bacon cheddar brussels sprouts (with duck fat!), which were rich and delicious, though a but heavy and some pieces of the bacon were tough. I keep going back to this place because they have interesting dishes, and even when they aren't total hits, they aren't misses either.

We showed up late on a Sunday night, sat at the bar and chatted with the staff. Friendly, funny and smart crew b Ordered the Bavette Steak with carrots. Unbelievable. Cooked to perfection with incredible mix of spices. My buddy had the chicken and broccoli. Said it was awesome. This place is a must. The bar is always first come first serve, but reservations are helpful on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

I've had dinner a few times here now, both alone and with others, and I have to conclude that this is one of the best restaurants in the greater Boston area. Locally sourced ingredients, highly thoughtful beer/wine/cocktail program, rustic new American bistro-sh food, blah blah blah, you've heard all this before, there's a million examples of this in Boston now. However, what propels this restaurant to a higher level is the true authenticity and warmth emanating from both front and back of house. You can tell the kitchen cares about this food, cares about getting it right. Just tonight I had some of the best roast chicken I've ever experienced, rivaling fine dining experiences in Boston and New York. Not every single thing coming out of the kitchen is necessarily that mind blowing, but you are going to be consistently happy with what you get. Their boards for two are always reliable and will usually provide plenty of food for two stout appetites, so order with care. The front of house staff are engaging, educated about the offerings and about food in general, and just plain pleasant to interact with. Much love to the bartender and his excellent post prandial cocktail that I had tonight, involving cold brew coffee, espresso liqueur and mole bitters. In general the cocktails here are head and shoulders and torso above anything else in the suburbs, and 95% of what's in Boston. This place is small, so if you are coming on a weekend with more than two people without a reservation, be prepared to wait. No worries though, just relax on the bench outside and peruse the menu, knowing the wait will be worthwhile. Overall, if you need a restaurant reference point, this place puts me most in mind of a mini Ten Tables or Craigie on Main - which is high praise in my opinion. Keep doing it right Sycamore, I will be back for sure.

Sycamore has been pretty hit or miss for me. It's usually either amazing or just average. Unfortunately this visit drifted to the latter. That being said, still love the quality service here. The highlight of the evening was the fried green circle chicken with black eyed peas and greens. Wow this was probably some of the best fried chicken I've had. You get two giant pieces: one dark meat, one white meat. The greens and peas accompanied the chicken so well too! Another highlight was the beignets as usual. Always flawless. In terms of items that weren't so great.....mushroom croquetta, charcuterie, corn agnolotti, and the blue fish. I'm used to be being blown away by Sycamore's dishes. But these just weren't cutting it for me. Tasted like I could've made it myself. Regardless, I'm still open to coming back

Lovely place for a fancy dinner out. On the last visit, the corn pancakes (no, not cornmeal, but like pancake batter with corn in them) were a surprisingly tasty vegetarian entree, and their sweet corn soup was refreshing and delicious. The pan-roasted fluke was like a fish cloud of light flakiness, but the steak was just... okay. A good night out.

To celebrate a long week at work, I pursued this French restauraut for their duck board I read abouton Yelp. Apparently that was a former special, so I had their lamb chops instead. I had it with a glass of reisling. It was delicious. They serve some house bread with olive oil. It is a little pricey but definitely worth it for a nice night!

My wife and I went to sycamore last night for our wedding anniversary. We started with some cocktails. My wife had the ghost of Mary which was a martini like drink but tasted like a Bloody Mary. Amazing! I had the dadbod because I have one and it reminded me of a very good Manhattan The food was outstanding. We started with the soft shell crab was homemade kimchi. Very tasty. For our entree, we shared the pork board, which was shank, tenderloin and sausage. The shank was crispy on the outside and meltingly tender inside. The tenderloin was cooked perfectly and went so well with the almond romesco. The sausage was flavorful and juicy. For dessert, we got the beignets and they were so light and delicious. We had a fantastic time, and our waitress was excellent and even gave us a few glasses of port on the house with our dessert. I would highly recommend this place for a fun night out or a special occasion

I went to Sycamore on a Saturday evening. The place was lively and filled completely, but our waitress never missed a beat. I ordered The Fall Guy for my drink, which was a little disappointing. It had a nice apple taste, which was quickly replaces by a burnt-rubber aftertaste. How that got a rubber taste in a drink, I'll never know. My date and I ordered the charcuterie plate to share for our appetizer. It was phenomenal! Even my boyfriend, who openly dislikes liver couldn't stop eating the whole plate. For our entrée, we specifically came here for the duck board, but it was not on the menu that evening. Instead we opted for the Game Board, which included bison steak, venison sausage, and wild boar. All of which had there own accompaniment of various starches and vegetables. We loved the dish! Each bite had a completely different flavor from the next. I would highly recommend it! My boyfriend ordered the apple crisp for dessert, and I got the warm, sugared beignets. I've had beignets in New Orleans, and let me tell you, the beignets at Sycamore blow Cafe Du Monde of the water. You have to try them! Overall, the experience was wonderful, and I'd love to come again to try everything else on the menu. The chefs are really doing something right!

My new favorite restaurant. We started with the soft shell crab and the strawberry salad and then had the pork board as the main meal. Delicious flavors and wonderful combinations. Dessert was the angel food cake and chocolate cake. Probably the best dessert I've had in a long time. For wine, I had a rosé from Lebanon. Truly unique and memorable. She enjoyed the blackboard red. We will be back.

Love Sycamore... One of my all time Boston-area favorites! I try to get there at least once a month. The Zucchini & Basil chilled soup is "to die for..." but the menu is seasonal so I can't promise it will be on the menu when you go. No worries... Everything on the menu there is awesome. In fact, it may not sound it, but the Bluefish Pate small plate is excellent - be adventurous :) If you like Martinis and/or Bloody Marys do not miss Scott's "Ghost of Mary" -- a vodka martini (think Bloody Mary in reverse) garnished with housemade spicy dilly beans -- it's awesome! My only criticism... It's small! Come early (or late), or plan to stand in line outside. :(

I made my way to the corner seat at the bar in Scott's (their bar manager extraordinaire) section. The experience being served by Scott is quite unique. He knows what you want, by the words you utter. For example, "I want something refreshing and not too strong." Soon after the best tasting Cranberry Collins with its 3 tart berries on a black plastic pick arrives. Perfect. Then voila you have thick cut crusty sourdough and silky smooth house butter with a hint of fleur de sel (I believe). This place knows food & drink. Despite eye balling the sun choke soup and potato gnocchi, I was nudged towards their signature "duck board" platter which reads "2ppl/66," at the top of the box it appears in menu center. Duck four ways myself, why not? A quick call to a regular at Sycamore and the second thing out of his mouth was, "so you gonna have the duck board?" I hung up, noticed said platters arriving to parties on either side of my perch, as I prepared form my own Man v. Duck battle. We discussed my impending challenge, and instead of skipping starters, I went with both the bluefish pâté and the chopped liver. I wanted something to spread on that amazing bread. Ironically, they both come with their own crostinis (I ate everyone). Both were worth the space in my stomach. The pâté was smooth and cream cheese like - white fish salad on steroids. The liver would make any Bobbie jealous; light and airy textured, having only four ingredients. The last one we debated. The answer was 'shmaltz'. Enough kibitzing, there was more to be sipped/nibbled. Scott brought me a twist on one of my favorite drinks called 'the ghost of mary', a cheesecloth strained tomato water and lemon vodka garnished with a crunchy yellow dilly (wax) bean. I would use this essence to get me through the 'D' board which arrived on two plates; the smaller a poutine of Vermont cheddar, savory gravy and an almost pulled duck. The larger square platter consisted of the duck the other three ways; glazed duck wings on top a pile of shaved brussel spouts and kohlrabi slaw, a grand portion of duck breast confit (divinely crisp skin) over an American chestnut puree and finally, spiced duck Andouille sausage, layered on a rectangle shaped, cake of Ansen Mills grits. Patrons and staff where eyeballing my eating challenge, which left only a small box of poutine base, a slice of confit and two slugs of sausage = a light leftover snack. With barely room for the tip of my meals cap, I saw blended foaming coffee numbers (espresso liquor and mole bitters) arrive to my left and behind me (the same couples that had ordered the duck board for 2). The blended coffee drink named after a firearm, was much needed to snap me out of my post-campaign 'oh' so full belly. There was no room for 'death by chocolate' of any sort, I had just survived 'death by duck' and was pretty darn satisfied. How could I forget Matt for bringing me a warm rolled towel and two lemon wedges for washing up (plus thanks in order to the whole synchronous team). With that...Here endeth the lesson of a 'Sycamorean' dining experience.

Don't go here, it's too hard to get in already! Love this place. I just relocated from San Fransisco and wanted a high end neighborhood eatery. I've managed about once a week here and see no reason to go anywhere else. The menu varies enough to keep from repeating dishes. Favorite dishes include the chicken and favorite appetizer was the clams, however they where only on the menu once. I always order the chocolate desert and it never disappoints!

The creative and smartly composed menu at Sycamore is always changing, but one thing that has rightfully stuck around is the cassoulet. Bursting with toulouse sausage, moulard duck confit, braised pork, and tarbais beans, and tossed with a generous helping of buttery breadcrumbs, this ultra-rich, three-bites and you're full dish is simply too good to pass up (you just might want to start with a salad first). From the food to the service and the ambience, the experience at Sycamore is quite lovely. The restaurant itself is pretty small and fills up quickly, so I'd recommend making a reservation before it does. There is some nice bar seating as well if you'd just like to stop by for drinks and nibbles. I don't order drinks very often, but the Southside Fizz, made with Berkshire Mountain Gin, egg white, lemon, and mint (two-ways) was calling my name. It did not disappoint. Given the inspired drinks, appetizers, and entrees, the dessert selection was a bit of a letdown. I opted for the flourless chocolate cake with pumpkin ice cream, and it was sadly unremarkable. It was, however, the only lowlight of an otherwise wonderful meal.

They just got "Best of the West"...of Boston, that is. With Chef Dave Punch and Chef Lydia Reichert, biodynamic wine expert and GM Mr Zach Lieberman, and brilliant bar manager and general guru, Scott Shoer, this is one of my favorite contemporary bistro places to dine. The menu is farm fresh and constantly changing. It gets busy and often is booked up, so I recommend calling for a reservation for more than 2 people. Fantastic cocktail menu and desserts are not just beautifully plated, they are delicious. I hope you get a chance to check this place out.

I have found an amazing gem of a restaurant! This is "Chad's Eats" review of Sycamore Cuisine: New American, French Location: Newton, MA Parking: Abundant street parking and there seemed to be lots nearby that could be used. The meters were buried in snow but luckily it didn't apply as on weekends parking is free after 6:00 PM. Not sure of weekdays Decor / Ambiance: Low lit romantic, creative use of ambient lighting which comes up from behind the seats along the wall. Great bar along the right as you walk in, dining to the left. As we walked in I got that feeling of "Oh yeah this is a cool place". Nice vibe, playing old classic funk in the back. Not to loud but just enough to dig it! Open kitchen with a great bunch of focused chefs in view making wonderful foods. I particularly liked how each one had there own distinctive look. As this business of being chefs has become almost rock star like, it's not uncommon to see a chefs appearance to accentuate their personality. I sat so I could watch the wonderful show. Greeting: Super friendly, we had 7:30 reservations that we arrived right on time for. We waited about 10 minutes for our table and the hostess gave us a drink menu. We ordered quickly and were given our drinks promptly. The bartender brought them over to us rather than reach across the folks at the bar which I found to be a great gesture. The entrance can be a little cramped if waiting for a table. Waiting outside was not an option in the winter weather but in warmer months I am sure that's where folks could wait. And trust me, it is worth the wait if you must! Menu mix: This menu clearly represents the culinary fortitude that is so strong in this kitchen. A great selection. Water / Bread service: Fantastic, awesome ramekin of whipped butter, bread was warm and crusty and fresh. Bread is served from the staff from a basket which the hold and present you with as much as you wish. I got seconds! Water was tap served in a bottle that was left on the table. Tasted as good as spring water. Our glasses were kept full by the attentive staff. Drink pour: Good wine pours, my rum was a measured pour and certainly acceptable. Food quality: Talent, talent, talent and oh so creative. This food is remarkable. It's not a large menu but you can safely bet that anything you choose will be a home run. We started out with the sweet potato muhummara which came with a grilled Naan type bread. We also got the winter citrus salad...cured black olive tapenade, grilled avocado & pistachios. This salad actually inspired me to create a similar salad at my school.I think my students would enjoy this very much. We also got the charcuterie plate. I remember this had summer sausage, a liver mousse and a chopped meat terrine I believe? Forgive me for not recalling exactly but it was wonderful (see my comments below). For our entrees I got the painted hills bavette steak...hand-cut frites, porcini butter, watercress, red wine jus 28. My wife got the loch etive sea trout...maine mussels, macomber turnips, leeks, butter lettuce velouté 25. Both were "Friggin" awesome.... Please note that I only use "Friggin" when I must indicate that something gets an additional push on the remark. The food at Sycamore is beyond awesome, or fabulous, and or fantastic so I strategically place "Friggin" in front to emphasize my feelings. Service: This stood out right away as soon as we came in the door. Throughout our entire meal we were well taking care of. Nice team work. At the end the kind hostess that took care of us when we came in asked us how our meal was. I told her we were thrilled and that she was so pleasant and kind. Value: For this class of food which is very creative, elegant and artistic I think it's a great value. I think closer to Boston you'd be paying far more and 35 bucks parking on top. So all around I am pleased with the value. Bathrooms: Impeccably clean! Beautiful and well maintained Would I return? Absolutely Comments & Tips: I highly suggest making reservations. Also I recommend getting the charcuterie. It changes frequently and features a variety of various house cured meats, sausage, pâtés, terrines and such. Comes with assorted pickled veggies and stone ground mustard. Grilled bread to help build little assembled bites.

Chef Dave and the team have created one of the best restaurants in the Boston area. The food is too good for words. The drinks are great and deserve mention, too. Service is wonderful. Sycamore is one of my favorite places to be.

One of the best dining out experiences ever. The food was excellent and our waitress was definitely very informed on the wine and gave excellent recommendations and pairings. Its a small restaurant with limited seating a little close together, but it was very worth it. The atmosphere and the food were excellent. Theres a small window to see in the kitchen and you could tell the cooks worked very hard and quickly to get the food out on time. And it did! highly recommend going here.

Went there at 9pm on a Friday for just apps & drinks and it was packed! The bartender was superb. PERFECT martini! Also had the Rock & Rye (their version of an Old Fashioned). Great drinks! We had the charcuterie plate, and the foie gras was very good with the other two spreads being ok. The complimentary bread was nice. Service was very good! Very attentive. We had a nice time. 5 stars for the drinks & service, 4 stars for the food & ambiance.

Sycamore gets everything right. They care about the details (even the salt shakers prove to perfectly compliment to the tablescape), their customers, and good service. To find a vegetarian entree offering in a beautiful restaurant that is original, not centered around cheese or covered in puff pastry, but still tasty and satisfying is a major win -- Sycamore gets it right. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, the design of this space is incredibly thoughtful and it shows, the light fixtures are OMG. They have maximized the square footage here in the best way. The food is locally sourced and therefore, the menu is always changing. That was a hard one to get past after experiencing the best vegetarian tasting board over the summer but luckily their creativity ensures you will always enjoy your meal. A big test of a space's success for me is the acoustics; I really feel this to be an area so many great restaurants neglect much to their own detriment. Given the cozy size of Sycamore I was concerned about this, but not for long, they clearly put thought into not just the aesthetics of the space but the overall experience of the diner and to that I say, well done! I really enjoy a place that gets it all right: gorgeous decor (in my dreamworld: this is exactly how I would design a restaurant), low key but attentive service, amazing wine selection, small yet inviting, refined and elegant but not pretentious, and just delicious. Don't miss it and thank you Sycamore! ps: I've been here with my bestie and my baybay - a great spot for a meal with anyone you care about!

I love this place really. I had one of the best--this is going to sound weird--vegetable crudites I've ever had. They even refilled the slightly warmed and pleasantly dressed little gems of summer when our vegetable to dip ratio fell out of balance. The cocktails were, well okay, the whole grilled fish was pretty forgettable. But the starters and sides were fantastic. Our carrot with Labneh (which was the dish the waiter suggested) was worth the lactose intolerance I didn't mention (I figured since I didn't tell him about my allergy to start it was my fault). Also how awesome is it to have a waiter bring you a side of carrots when you ask them to surprise you? Normally they would just bring out what overpriced out of season lobster or steak dish they can jack up your ticket. No, not here. Love it and I'd go back again--I just wish it wasn't sooo far away.

This place has delicious food, laid back atmosphere, great service, and amazing drinks. We had the oysters, rillete, salman, bierwurst, steak fritter, and duck board for two. The meal was spread out time-wise very well and we didn't feel rushed or hungry for the next course. Our server and kitchen worked well together. The drinks were made by the mixologist; and he has a good sense of humor. We met some new people at the bar, including John Dewar himself. It was a great night with lots of fun.

Definitely one of my favorite restaurants I've been to in recent times. Sycamore is intimate, romantic, and still upbeat all in one. The chickpea fries are celestial and the drinks are strong but blended well with flavor. Highly recommend this establishment for repeat business or newcomers alike.

This place should get zero stars but it makes me give a rating! My friend and I decided to go into Sycamore to grab drink to get out of rain while we waited for our other friend. We were on the corner by the bar to order drinks. There was a 7 year old sitting at the bar. Pretty sure a kid should not be seated at the bar. There was plenty of space on the corner for us. After receiving our drinks and placing them on the bar for one second. The male host condescendingly said to us "girls, come hangout over by the wall" behind the hostess station. We were not hovering people seated at the bar or in the way. He could have said excuse me, do you mind moving over while you have your drinks? He talked in a tone as if we were children and did not want our business. We ordered cocktails so we were spending money. We quickly finished our drinks and paid the tab. Normally, I would just brush it off but the customer service rubbed us the wrong way. and definitely will not be going back or suggesting that place to anyone.

The drinks are the only reason Sycamore isn't getting one star. I love French food, and Sycamore simply doesn't stack up. Honestly, I saw lots of bourgeois white folk who associate price and dimmed lights with quality and taste. I am completely serious: we sat next to a "sugar daddy" and his escort. Anyway, under seasoned, overcooked meat; burnt greens; pushy service--really a let down. I went in to Sycamore hoping to find a new favorite local French bistro, but left with a stomach full of disappointment. If you don't know any better, give it a shot. If you are a fan of French food, don't bother.

This place is probably my favorite restaurant right now. I have been here maybe four or five times and everyone of them has been an absolute delight. I have not been served one morsel of food that wasn't absolutely delicious on every level. In addition to a fantastic kitchen team, The waitstaff are exceptionally attentive and the bartender is so ridiculously skilled that if I were to go into detail about how good the cocktails work, we would be here all day. The menu is ever-changing what is consistently delicious.

Food was good but not great. Management was very rude and too much attitude for us to return. Bread was a little stale and appetizers were ok but on the bland side. Same with the main dishes and desserts were flat.

A friend and I had the pleasure of dining here last night. Our waitress was excellent, friendly and attentive without being overly so, and the food was also very good. I had the halibut, which was perfectly cooked, and my friend and I shared the steamed clams, a salad, and the sausage appetizer. I was pleasantly surprised by the sausage appetizer, which had a bit of a barbequed flavor, and the bread was also delicious. I had the beignets for dessert. They were good, but not as light and fluffy as they could have been. The steamed clams were undercooked, and I felt that most of the offerings went a little bit overboard with the nuts, but we really enjoyed our meal, and we look forward to returning the next time we win the lottery.

My fiancée and I tried Sycamore for the first time this past weekend and were not disappointed. The cocktails were excellent, the menu was unique, and both of our meals were very delicious. Service was brisk despite the crowded Saturday night rush, the staff were knowledgable and friendly throughout the evening.

We were greeted by the friendly hostess upon arrival without reservations. She immediately took our name, managed our drink order and made sure we were set while we waited for our table. We were seated at the corner of the bar with a view of the rustic contemporary design and vibrant scene. The menu includes a variety of farm to table options which rotate regularly. We started with the popular charcuterie which included a variety of pate curations quite different from your normal meat, cheese and olive spread. Main courses included the vegetarian leek pancakes and steak with a potato hash. Each of the courses were excellent and we'd recommend Sycamore for both a casual outing with friends or for that romantic evening with a significant other.

We love Newton Centre and are always on the lookout for new restaurants here. We've been wanting to try Sycamore for a long while, and finally had the chance to have dinner here. We had a 6 PM reservation for 2, but we actually had 3 people because we brought our 11 month old. Even though every table was already accounted for, they still made space and pulled up a high chair for our kid. The host was kind enough and the busboy was the nicest guy I've ever had serve us! He kept asking if the baby needed anything--bread, milk, baby spoon, plate. Thumbs up! The spanish chorizo croquettas were amazing. Hot, crunchy, bursting with flavor! The peaches and cream salad was to die for!! AGH I could eat it everyday. The perfect amount of ricotta cheese, fresh herbs and sweet peaches!! With salty pieces of cured meat and pistachio butter?!? Delic! And the cavatelli was so dang good! I love how they just use market fresh ingredients.. they subsituted the broccoli for fresh corn and peppers. Mmmm combined together with the pecorino cheese, I want to try making this at home! We ordered the pesto steak with crispy potatoes and the veggie platter with barley and mushrooms.. both were large portioned and you could just taste the difference with fresh ingredients. The dessert menu was very well rounded, but we only had room to share one. We got the blackberry semifreddo. It was a little on the creamy side for me, but we still polished it off with no problem. The accompanying butter cookie was A+. We were stuffed beyond capactiy, but next time I'll be back for drinks and the fish board!! Oh! We also got a what's up from the chef.. he was super nice and asked how our meal was :)

My husband and I recently celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary at Sycamore and we had a wonderful time. Everything from the ambiance to the food to the staff was perfect. It is clear that they take great pride in the front and back of the house and really want to make each visit memorable. Everything from the complimentary champagne to start the meal, to the perfectly cooked food (we had the ribs and the steak) made our trip to Sycamore an anniversary dinner we will not forget.

This past Friday was our first time ever at Sycamore. We were lucky to get one of the last available reservations. The hostess was super attentive and personable. We arrived early, so I figured I'd get one of their cocktails (they sounded great). As I tried to figure out how to approached the bar, the bartender (who was already fully busy with an entire bar of diners as we as mixing all the cocktails for the place), addressed me quickly and said someone would be right with us. I ended up with one of the best pimm's cups I've ever tasted. The Valentine's Day tasting menu was a dream - the components of Rabbit & Foie Gras terrine were perfectly balanced, the toasted nori butter was the most interesting and surprisingly tasting thing that we've eaten in a while! The quail was comforting and the red chicory made the dish. We loved both the Rum Baba and the Key Lime Parfait. The wine pairings were perfection. The Lamb for two was homey and savory and comforting. And Allison was one of the best servers we've had in a long time. The meal was worth every penny! And we're looking forward to going again (and trying the Duck Board!) - great service, great drinks, great food! Thank you, Sycamore!

Dang! The food here was SO good. I had the corn pancakes and they were delightful. We were seated without a reservation. The waitress was witty and funny. I wonder if she's that cool with all of her patrons? The bring you bread here by the slice. Just when you think you're done, another piece appears. It's just something else. Good ambiance. The chefs look cool behind the glass thingy too. Would have given it 5 stars if they had a vegan option. Which they may have. But what is 5 stars anyway? Think about it.

My boyfriend and I went to Sycamore last Sunday night after the restaurant had been recommended to us by numerous friends. Our server, Kasey, was very knowledgeable and helped us pick delicious items for our meal. This restaurant's food definitely lived up to the recommendations we received. For starters we ordered the Equinox Farm Greens salad and Chorizo croquettes. I thought the salad was delicious, although my boyfriend was not a huge fan of the poached pears. I ordered the Scosmopolitan off of the cocktail list and was pleasantly surprised by the flavor mix of aperol and blood orange. For entrees, I ordered the steak and my boyfriend ordered the rabbit. My boyfriend's rabbit was gone so fast I almost didn't even get a bite. I thought my steak was great, too. We ordered the beignets for dessert and my boyfriend would not shut up about how much he liked them. He said he would go back just for dessert anytime. We both recommend Sycamore and are glad for the (relatively) new addition to Newton Center.

Simply the best food in Newton! Menu for Foodies, for the Adventurous Only! Make a reservation way ahead as it is a small, cozy space, but we'll worth the wait!

We had heard about Sycamore and then saw it made Boston Magazine's Top 50 restaurants so we decided to try it out. We went on a Saturday night as a walk-in couple, thinking if we couldn't get a table we'd just grab a drink at the bar and move to another Newton restaurant if necessary. Upon arriving there was a two seat table by the window in the bar area and we were seated immediately. Food wise, Sycamore was a clear 5-star choice. I never recall seeing actual "chopped liver" on the menu (here it is a snack item). Yes, there is often a pate of some sort, but not as basic, venerable chopped liver. While we all think our grandmother made the best chopped liver, Sycamore's version may change your mind. The texture, taste (a little extra garlic than my grandmother's), etc. were all excellent. Our other starter was the roasted heirloom carrots, which is not something we would typically choose (plus, I am a bit tired of the recent heirloom label on everything), but the preparation looked very interesting with a walnut-miso puree, dates, and mustard greens. The carrots were cooked to perfection, and the flavors filled your mouth. It turned out to be a great choice. For the main course we had to try the seasonal "board". Right now it is duck based, and all aspects were delicious. The duck legs were perfectly prepared and the sausage had great taste, even for non-sausage lovers. The other duck preparations were equally as good. The "board" rotates periodically - fish, pork, vegetarian, etc. and I think we'd go for it no matter what it was as it allowed the kitchen to show its talent and versatility. Service was attentive but not overbearing. I appreciated the opportunity to try a taste of one of the wines available by the glass which the waitress recommended, and even more importantly, she was not at all upset when I said I didn't care for it and went with a different selection. There were some interesting cocktails as well - we can recommend the Flight of the Concords with concord grape puree - tasty and not too sweet. The noise level can get loud given the size of the bar/dining room, so it may not be the most intimate place (also there were several kids in the restaurant - something I try to avoid on a Saturday night). But food wise, Sycamore is worth the trip, even if you don't live out on the west side of town.

We really enjoyed our dinner here. We had reservations midweek, during a record midwinter snowstorm. We were surprised to find Sycamore full of diners! Boston was pretty much deserted this evening! We soon found out why -this place is worth the effort. The menu was creative and enticing without being too precious. Our waiter was happy to explain when I asked questions that were not particularly sophisticated (I am NOT a "foodie" although I certainly appreciate good food). The portions and prices were attractive. I loved the ambiance and size of the restaurant. Drinks were creative and heavily poured - I like it. Waiter loaned me a lighter - I love it. We will be back. They made us feel welcome and made our tummies happy. Smile!!

Comfy and delish. The cozy atmosphere was great for a mid-week dinner. House red wine was juicy, flavorful and inexpensive, always a great way to start a dinner! Our server generously offered us a taste before purchase, which is an art that a lot of suburban restaurants have forgotten about. Oysters were fresh and prepared with lime and ginger. Steak had a peppery crust with super tasty fries. The gnocchi was a little under seasoned but still soft and pillowy.

very overrated. The food was good but not great. barely warm. We ordered the mushroom croquettes which had delicious flavor. The bread was excellent but the butter had so much salt as did the the mushroom croquettes - and I love salt. Fluke was so fishy it tasted like it was several days old. they immediately let us order something else for no extra cost. The scallops were very good but seemed like they were warmed up an hour before. They were lukewarm at best. The beignets were delicious. All of this added up to a decent meal but not for the price and certainly not for such a presumably exceptional restaurant. I would rate it good but not great and some of the things just mediocre. the room is all hard surfaces and even when there are just 10-15 people in there it is hard to hear your tablemates. Typical of a "trendy" restaurant which wants to create a buzz. Having recently moved from NYC we are astounded that this had NY prices and mediocre food. All in all we are very disappointed in this.

Wow. My wife and I dined here last night on their 6th day of operation. The renovation from the old John Dewer butcher shop is great. The exposed brick walls and dim lighting set the mood just right. We were seated next to the large plate glass windows which we enjoyed. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. He has followed the chef/owner from his previous two, Ten Tables restaurants. We started out with two glasses of the Cabernet which we enjoyed. I don't recall where it was from. We preferred it over a Pinot we had also tasted. The winter salad and the turnip soup were our starters. The soup was accompanied by a crisp with a wonderful smoked trout spread. Both the soup and salad were perfect. We shared the scallops for an entree. They were amazing and cooked in some type of wine reduction I believe. Our desserts were the chocolate cake and the lemon custard. Along with the french press coffee, we were in dessert heaven. There are two things we think could be improved. Both the bread (Iggys style) and the chocolate cake should be served warm. This seems like an easy change. We are very happy to have Sycamore in the neighborhood and look forward to returning very soon.

Ming who? Tsai what? Move aside. Seriously. Sycamore owns it. In the food desert that is suburban Boston, Sycamore owns the oasis. I see palm trees everywhere, call me T.E. Lawrence. Bar program is off the hook. OFF the hook. Compares to Ashley Christensen's Fox Liquors in a big way (hard to beat but close). Desserts are amazing, properly apportioned and service is all there. Seriously, this place is in my backyard, had heard about it and just had not made it out. Why was I trekking to Boston, Cambridge. . . and Wellesley? Oh, and Ming Tsai? Not impressed. Outta here.

Sycamore is a true Newton gem. Fantastic food and service, and constantly changing menu. Everything is top notch. We have sat in the dining room and at the bar and been consistently pleased with our experience. Definite recommend. (And don't pass on the desserts!)

Had a phenomenal dinner at Sycamore. The place is very compact but the feel is not too crowded. The high ceiling and sound dampening decor allows conversation which is important because you will want to talk about the food. Started this visit with two cocktails, the Ghost of Mary and the Family Jewels. Both were really well crafted and addictively tasty. By "well crafted" I mean you can taste all the ingredients - there's a sort of transparency of flavor so you can focus on the individual parts or the whole - great balance, inventive flavor profiles. I don't know how he does this, but makes for a very satisfying cocktail. Then again maybe that's why he won best bartender in Newton from the local paper. On to the food. The bread was wonderful and it's always encouraging when you get really good bread. It sets the stage. We were off to a good start. We ordered the Pork board. It serves two people. It included about 4 different pork cuts in three different forms; pork chop on smashed potatoes with broccoli rabe, pork belly with sauerkraut and mustard sauce topped with a light crunchy slaw, a cassoulet with pork sausage and one other pork cut that escapes me. Everything is made from scratch. Each cut was prepared perfectly. Any one of these alone would have been a great dinner. It was fun to have so many different flavors to explore. I want to say that the cassoulet was the bomb (smoky pork, rich creamy slow roasted beans and panko-like crunch... perfect) but, the other cuts were equally as amazing. Basically the best pork chop I've ever had and the pork belly super rich but not cloying. The sides that come with the pork cuts are also exceptionally good. The potatoes under the porkchop - to die for!. We paired all this with a red wine recommended by one of our servers (should have taken notes) which was an perfect pairing. Although the two of us were completely (and wonderfully) stuffed by the pork board, I had to try some dessert just to check it out. Went with the sugared beignets. I have to agree with previous reviewers they were the best beignets I've ever had (been to Cafe DuMonde, etc). These beignets are like the crack of pastry. Served with a caramelly-orange tinged dipping sauce. Ridiculously delicious! The service was excellent we were never in want of water, bread or anything. Moreover on two occasions our servers helped me to order better than I would have on my own. I love it when the servers can help you figure out what you really want by combining their own opinions, their experience and some questions about your general preferences. All in all it was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. A memorable dining experience. Hats off to the chef and crew for a great time.

Love sycamore's vibe- intimate, exposed brick, small bar, etc. (more polished than 10 Tables, though feels 10 Tables-esque). If were blindfolded and guided into the restaurant, could easily be convinced you were in the South End - not suburban Newton. Great, creative food. Shared the Beef Board (which was beef like 5x different ways) - filet, marrow, pulled, Reuben sliders with handmade corned beef, etc. Tasty and creative. Despite its small size, sycamore would be reasonable for up to a party of four. Would definitely return.

Glad to see restaurants of this caliber moving into the 'burbs. Got the fish board for 2 and it was fantastic. Halibut cooked to a perfect temp, simply seasoned. Just a perfect piece of fish. Grilled Octopus was so tender, a rare find. Tuna conserva, simple, perfect. Friendly staff to match great food. No need to drive to Cambridge or Somerville.

After 3-4 attempts to make reservation at this place, finally was able to try it on a Wednesday night. I received three emails plus one phone call from either OpenTable or Sycamore to confirm my reservation. They range from subtle reminders of my reservation to mild threats of charge $25 per person for party over four if no show. That, to me, was a little too much. Now, on the actual visit. The whole experience was pretty good. The host was nice, our waitress was helpful. The food was above average, on par with what they are charging. My husband had the rabbit sausage, and I had the potato soufflé. The sausage was quite good and tender, great sauce. The soufflé portion was way too small even for a small girl like me. All in all, we had three appetizers, two entrees, plus two pieces of bread which they only give you a second if you ask for it, I still came home hungry...maybe I just eat too much... Overall, not a bad place for a special night or client dinner. Not for everyday casual dinning, not unless you usually spend $55 per person (with no drinks!) on a meal on a weekly bases. I like the place, but it does have room for improvement.

It's great - go try it, and try it again! Became a fan for the first time December of last year. The staff members are uber fantastico. The spanish chorizo croquettas are always amazing! I tried an array of plates since inception. The board of meat is fabulous, the small plates are always good AND the drinks are spectacular!

Went to Sycamore for the first time and I was pleased that they are very accommodating to food allergies. I had the amazing gougères - choux pastry made of choux dough mixed with cheese! So delicious so we ordered another round. The food is always changing but leave room for dessert, their beignets are out of this world. The staff is great and everyone made an appearance to our table at least once to help. The host, bartender, every waiter, and the chef seem to work as a very cohesive unit to provide the best service possible to the guests.

Since March, Sycamore has a special Monday late-night menu from 9pm to 11:30pm called "Big Trouble in Little Sycamore". They were featured in Boston Magazine's ramen calendar, so a friend and I ventured out to try this suburban ramen a few minutes from Newton Centre station on the D line. The decor and atmosphere is trendy, with those vintage-looking tungsten bulbs where you can see the filament glow burnt orange, and cookbooks lining the window between the restaurant and the kitchen. They were playing Star Wars Episode IV on the TV, on silent at the bar. The bar side was moderately loud and convivial; the restaurant side was more subdued and fitting for a meal. We ordered as appetizers the rice cakes (decent, but not memorable) and the sausage (incredibly juicy and succulent). We also got a half liter of the house red wine for $18, which seemed like an incredibly good deal. Finally, the long-awaited ramen came out, served inside with a soft-boiled egg, a head of bok choy, two soft and tender slices of pork, and a bit of kimchi. I cannot find anything to fault about the taste. The egg is really good (and next time I will ask for an extra egg). When you eat the pork fat in the ramen, close your eyes and let it rest on your tongue, chewing slowly. That is my decadent experience of the week. We left full but wanting more. And that's the mark of a good dish. I think the ramen is served until 10:30pm, and snacks up until 11:30pm - so be sure not to come too late.

I've readjusted my rating for Sycamore from 5 stars to 3 after a second visit (I expect readers to take an average here). While our first visit was quite spectacular, our second was good...but merely good. Again we visited Sycamore for desert and wine, though for our second visit the desert item was far less impressive and it seemed the quality of service had dipped a bit. The entity tending bar, for example, was so loudly gabbing with patrons about the private lives of apparently mutual acquaintances that we could hardly conduct conversation at our own table at reasonable decibels. I'd like to return, but I'm not as excited as I once was.

We love coming in and going to the bar. Great selection of beers and good cocktails. I tend to prefer the small plates / appetizers. Only knock is its a bit expensive for what you get. But certainly a place we will continue to go to. (I'm also a hard rater - A 3 means I like the place and will definately return.)

What is not to love about this place? Unpretentious great food done and serve right! Try whatever meat board they have, depending on the season and you won't have regrets. Ours was a pig board- all cooked to perfection. The Kale side dish is amazing, has an extra dimension and depth. Lamb dish 3 ways was heavenly! Our cocktails were delightful, crisp and clean! Service is great, attentive and not pushy with great understanding of their food and menu!

Don't walk...RUN to this restaurant. What fabulous food, expertly cooked and served in a warm, friendly environment. As we left sometime after 10 on a Tuesday night, we were charmed to see neighborhood folks hanging out and chatting with the bartender and chef. Loved this place, will be back very soon. Thank you to the staff for a wonderful experience.

As a overly stubborn chef who is typically dissatisfied. Sycamore exceeded my expectations. Because the food is simple yet executed to perfection I can honestly say that it should be praised for its strait forward approach. Each dish exceeded my expectation. I was in Boston area for 1 week and are their two times. Must must Must must eat here. Oh yeah - cocktails are flawless too!

Went here with my dad on a Friday night - place was packed but they found us two seats at the bar. What a treat! The food was delicious, and the bartender not only made AMAZING drinks but kept us laughing the whole time. He even made us some special drinks that weren't on the menu (one with homemade honey, it was awesome!). great place to go for a date night or night out with friends - but make a reservation first!

Natalie at Bodywise Healing is a pleasure to work with and be worked on by. While I have seen her only once, which may not be enough to go by, I am very likely to return both because the studio where she is located is a very relaxing and healing place, and because she listens and intuits what one needs so well.

We had a memorable dinner at this new restaurant that has taken Newton Center by storm. Living in Watertown it is an easy drive to Newton Center and everyone has been talking about this restaurant. This restaurant was started by another amazing restaurant owner from Cambridge. The owner also ran "Ten Tables" in Cambridge which was another of my favorites in the area. They have unique and gourmet menu items with unusual ingredients but they are just phenomenal. I started with a beautiful winter citrus salad and en had the Spanish seafood cassoulet. It was wonderful. They also pride themselves on having many wine selections from small wineries. That is a nice option to try some new wines you may never persist sample. The Hudson valley duck board looked interesting and I am very much looking forward to going back to try that menu item. The decor is wonderful and it is very hip and modern and fun all at the same time. This is a marvelous spot for date night, men, if you really want to impress your lady.

We came to Sycamore for Scott's great cocktails, specifically the Ghost of Mary, as well as his knowledge of food and his self-effacing, dry sense of humor. It was our first time at Sycamore, and it became an experience that, although it was not quite my girlfriend's birthday, and our visit was spontaneous based on the day's activities, she proclaimed that this was her birthday feast, because nothing was going to top it. We ordered the heirloom tomato salad, and the Southern Board, and we were completely blown away by the fresh ingredients...we devoured the pulled pork sliders, perfectly fried fish and fried whole (!) okra, fried green tomatoes, and house made pork sausage...which was seasoned and fatty enough for tenderness with extraordinary flavor. We even had some sausage left over, which ended up being the standout in a breakfast scramble, two days later. All of that said, the most stellar components of our experience were the service, the atmosphere, and the cocktails. I mean to say that we really loved the food, but we were there intending to relax and enjoy ourselves...and we achieved that without any effort, thanks to the amiable, neé family-level-welcoming staff and beautiful design of the place. We sat at the bar, as we normally like to do, so we were treated to great conversation whenever it was appropriate for our dining... and every suggestion and chance for incidental service was well timed. The excellent drinks, both delicious microbewed beer and booze, Scott's humor, and rapport with his colleagues made us smile all throughout the dinner, and we have no choice but to return, hopefully soon.

Place has only been open for a few weeks and I can already say that this is the best restaurant in Newton Center. Food, cocktails, beer, and wine are all top notch. I would guess that they are going to be rotating what's on their menu, but if they have scallops and beignets for dessert, definitely give them a try. Atmosphere is great. Dining room has a nice view into the kitchen & the bar has a very cozy and relaxed vibe. Definitely a great place to dine and hang out at. Anyway, hopefully they can keep it up...Really love it so far.

We wanted to try Sycamore for our anniversary and we're very glad we did. Pros: Fantastic food. Wait staff was all very friendly and professional. Our waitress served us complimentary champagne when we she found out it was our anniversary. Then she made great recommendations on a white wine and beer (Brooklyn Sorachi Ace) and things only improved from there. We ordered the Duck Board, which was both delicious and (despite one review here) delivered more than enough food for two people unless you expect Longhorn Steakhouse portions. We did manage to save space for a shared serving of beignets, served piping hot with "milk jam" (essentially dulce de leche) for dipping. Everything was cooked perfectly and was absolutely delicious! Cons: The bread is tasty--crusty and dense--but is still served cold as other reviewers note. The place is small and gets crowded very early, even midweek, so you'll need a reservation well in advance. Even with the recently installed sound baffles, the dining area is quite loud. Go for a fun date with great food, but don't expect to whisper sweet nothings and be heard over the other conversations.

We read the (mostly positive) reviews and decided to give he place a try one Friday evening. Nice space. Courtesy service. The food was average at best. I had the skirt steak for main and it was underseaoned. The steak was of poor quality and badly butchered.

Go here. This place has a warm, cozy atmosphere from the minute you walk in the door. We were immediately greeted by friendly staff. We were early and had time to grab a drink at the bar, with a very nice bartender who introduced me to a new drink -- the cucumber rose. The small dining room has high windows into the kitchen, so you get to see some of the action without hearing all the noise. Waiter was friendly, personable and attentive. We had 2 snacks -- the chorizo croquettas and the warm gourgeres. Both were 4 pieces/bites and were delicious. Main plates were the stuffed quail and the daube de bouef (a stewed meat with veggies and parsnip puree). Both were home runs. In general, this place had great food and staff that conveyed quality without making it seem like they were trying too hard. Two small suggestions for the restaurant: 1) serve your bread warm, as others have suggested, it will make such a difference 2) work on improving the heat in your bathrooms. Those seats were chilly! I can't knock off stars for those 2 small items. Good work Sycamore!

Everything was absolutely phenomenal. Had a reservation at 7:30. Good thing I did because the place was packed! We had oysters and the pig head for apps and monk fish and beirworst for entrees which there were no complaints about. Drinks were on point as well. Staff was friendly and attentive. I can't say enough about our visit. You will not be disappointed.

My fiance and I tromped through the snow left by Blizzard Nemo to dine at Sycamore and celebrate our four year anniversary last night. It was the perfect restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. And, I am absolutely delighted to add to my list of favorite restaurants in Boston! The restaurant itself is warm and cozy. The space has exposed brick, cookbooks stacked on bookshelves, and three large windows that allow guests to watch the cooks prepare delicious meals. It felt comfortable and a place where I would want to sit with friends all day. When we walked into the restaurant, we were greeted by a host who was smiling ear-to-ear. As soon as we mentioned our name (we made a reservation in advance), he congratulated us on our anniversary. We were then taken to a window table. Within minutes, our server came by to pour us two glasses of champagne on the house in celebration of our anniversary. It was such a nice gesture, and the champagne they poured was fantastic! In addition to champagne, we could not resist their drink menu. I decided on the aviation variation ($11) which was a delicious cocktail of Berkshire mountain gin, lemon, St. Germain, maraschino, and creme de violette. I could happily drink it all day. My fiance, who loves craft beers, choose the Rising Tide "Ishmael" Copper Ale ($14). To start our meal, we ordered the salt-cured foie gras with grilled bread and membrillo ($7) from their snack menu. My fiance and I typically order foie gras whenever we are celebrating a big event whether that be an anniversary, birthday, work promotion, etc. This was one of the best foie gras dishes we have ever had. If you like foie gras, you need to order this dish. For our main course, we split the pork special, which was pork prepared three ways: pork loin with peaches and polenta, pork sausage with a wonderful mustard sauce, and pork belly. Yum! The dish is quite large as it is meant to be shared and we devoured it, leaving nothing left on our plate. If this is still a special when you visit, you need to order this. I promise you won't be disappointed! With our main course, we also ordered brussels sprouts with bacon lardons and cheddar ($6). I am one of those people who love brussels sprouts and order them wherever I go. These were perfection. And, I have no idea why more restaurants don't serve brussels sprouts with bacon and cheddar more often! While we were quite full, we decided to split a dessert: yogurt panna cotta with kumquats, pomegranate, and walnut cookie ($9). It was the perfect way to end the meal. The panna cotta was light and creamy and went perfectly with the sweatness of the kumquats and bitterness from the pomegranates. The walnut cookie was also fantastic. I kind of wish you could buy these cookies and take them home! All in all, we absolutely loved the food, service, drinks, and ambiance at Sycamore. I am so very glad it has moved into Newton Centre and I am so excited to try more items from their rotating menu! Note: While Sycamore does not have valet parking, there is a huge public parking lot a short distance from the restaurant. It is also a very short walk from the Newton Centre green line stop.

Sycamore is a great new place in Newton center, and proved to be an awesome meal. It is nice that it isn't located in the heart of Boston or Cambridge, and is thus a great contender when you want a delicious meal and don't want to travel into the congested city. We had to make a late reservation (9:30) but the place was packed. When we left at 11 it was still pretty crowded. The ambiance inside is extremely homey. There is lots of exposed brick, candles, cookbooks, wooden tables, etc. There are 3 windows that allow you a glance into the kitchen. I agree with another Yelper that it would be nice if the bread was served warm. I had a couple of beers and the GF had a cocktail. Expensive, but similarly priced to other places of this caliber. Slightly annoying is that we got duped on paying for water. The person who seated us asked if we wanted 'regular' water. We said yes. The waiter then came up after and asked if we wanted 'still' water. We thought this was the same thing, as different restaurants serve tap water as still (but some don't). Anyways, it was a damn good bottle of water for 6$. But seriously, only asshats pay for 1000x filtered water. The service other than that was great. Efficient and knowledgeable without being pushy. The food was extremely good. My girlfriend and I split the gougeres, the pork pate, and the duck board for two. The gougeres were small little pillows of goodness, certainly not as dense as others I've had. The pate was also great. Porky and fatty, with the usual accompaniments to cut through the richness. The duck board.........GET THIS. Housemade duck pastrami, sausage, breast, and leg confit. EVERYTHING was great. The breast and the confit had perfectly crisp skin, and my girlfriend and I housed the whole thing in about 10 minutes. We also each got a dessert, which was good but not memorable. So why not 5 stars? Well, for one this place is LOUD. As I mentioned the place is small and homey, but the acoustics in there are not meant for normal voices. Multiple times throughout the night (even after shouting) my dining partners and I couldn't hear what each other was saying. Our waiter also had a hard time hearing us (and vice versa). It certainly put a damper on the experience. Also, this place is expensive. I know we're close to the city, but it's still frustrating to eat bread+gougeres+pate+duck board and still be hungry after, especially at that price. Minimal critiques, but certainly enough to merit some deduction. Apart from that, I really enjoyed Sycamore. It is close by, and I am eager to see what else the chef has to offer in the future.

Best Service I have had in a long time! As soon as we got in we were greeted warmly. We had to wait for a table, which was fine. So the manager helped us choose some drinks. While we were waiting 2 other people checked on us to make sure we were all set. We got our drinks. I liked mine, but my date did not. She was content to drink it but the host insisted that they make her another drink. Practically grabbed it out of her hand haha! It was appreciated. The next drink they brought her was great! Once we sat down, our server (Jason) gave us great service. Personable, knowledgeable, and attentive. All the food we had was great! So without boring you with all the details, just know whatever you order you will probably love! On top of it all the atmosphere is great! It may not be the place you go to regularly as it a high end place (our dinner plus drinks and tip was $200), but every dollar is well spent. Well done Sycamore!

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the Boston area. The food is impeccable, especially the small plate starters and the meal boards to share, which never disappoint. The staff is attentive, but not pushy in any way, and always happy to greet you, make recommendations, and provide a laugh. The bar is the place I enjoy sitting the most, as you get a view of the restaurant, but also all the food coming out of the fast moving kitchen. Cannot recommend the expertly-mixed cocktails enough - Scott is amazing - Ghost of Mary is one of my all time favorite drinks. The wine list is great, and I've never been steered wrong with any of Zach's recommendations. I've been here several times, and always look forward to returning.

Our new favorite restaurant! They did everything right. We ate at the bar - engaging bartender, great staff. Every bite of every dish was fantastic. Bread was great, oysters with the melon/lemon were unbelievably good. The summer farm board was some of the most delicious food I remember eating in a long time. Who knew fried green tomatoes could taste THAT good? And the eggplant involtini was delectable. Try it - it is a wonderfully satisfying meal for two. Can't wait to go back. What a nice addition to Newton.

My wife and I found a new go-to spot in Newton Centre. Sycamore is an in-demand reservation because it has damn good food (and it's not a large restaurant). We ate: - Pickled garden vegetables - Green garbanzo hummus (delicious take on a classic!) - Equinox farm greens - Fresh peaches and herbs (missing something - perhaps a dressing?) - Assiette of summer vegetables (loved the sweet corn) - All natural flank steak (wife said her meat wasn't the most flavorful, but the crispy potatoes were spot-on) I reserved through Opentable and noted my vegan diet. The host and our server had already discussed modifications with the chef prior to my arrival - much appreciated!

We went on a Thursday evening during opening week and are very happy to welcome this new foodie restaurant to Newton. Not yet over flowing, but I can see this being a neighborhood hot spot and one that folks from other towns will seek out for a fine dining experience. - Service was attentive and informative with guidance; the waiter even made some spicy ketchup appear at request - The food was very good to excellent. We shared Winter salad, sea scallops and steak frites. The menu was (this night) American with French influence, creative (seafood sausage!) but minimalistic (not too many items nor over the top on ingredients) - Menu and beer and wine list are finely curated without overwhelming - Atmosphere was very warm and decor simple, but very pleasing (exposed break walls, nice lighting). Two items for improvement: 1) One main (scallops) seemed a bit scant on the sides and an encouragement by the waiter to order a side would have been nice; Steak frites did not lack on the frties. 2) The main dining room (there is a separate bar room area) a little awkward as you are fully exposed via full windows to the street. It seems like it could use some dressing up or smoking of glass perhaps.

Honestly, I am done with pretension, uppity-ness, and tiny expensive portions. Mind you, there was a time when I was into "the scene," but no longer. I am in the food business and I know how much I am paying for the rent of "said" restaurant. Sycamore is perfect for the wealthy, bored crowd who can afford to sit and eat an ounce or two of tenderloin for an outrageous amount of money. That is who would enjoy the very nice atmosphere and ambiance. Food was no big deal, and menu was totally pretentious. In this hard economic climate, I recommend going somewhere where you truly get what you pay for.

Food quality and presentation were nice, we ordered the duck board for two, but we didn't get the whole duck which was disappointing and a bit misleading, we expected the WHOLE duck! One entire thigh/leg and one breast were missing and for $65.00 we felt it we should have received the whole bird, it came with nothing but a very small portion of sauteed spinach-suitable for one. App portions were small and the wine list was expensive... there was only ONE bottle for $33- which tasted acidic, we ended up having to spend $50- to get something acceptable. Most wines by the glass were $12-$15 dollars... Our waitress was a bit awkward and clumsy. Desserts were small and pricey for what you got. It's really about value, I don't mind spending good money for a nice meal; but I want t o feel like I got my moneys worth. I didn't feel that here... I wouldn't rush back anytime soon but would return. We were still hungry when we left....It wasn't as noisy as others have mentioned here; we had a nice conversation. Tables are a bit close to each other and people can eavesdrop easily...I would not pop a ring here or discuss personal matters.

Our favorite restaurant. We try to come here often and are never disappointed. Have never had something less than absolutely delicious. I still remember the lamb sausage and the pig's head salad, both from one of the boards. We love the cocktails, both on the menu and by request.

My sisters, mother and I went to Sycamore for a nice dinner and it was amazing. The atmosphere was pleasant. The food was delicious and the service was amazing. I would definitely recommend trying it but booking a reservation I think is your best bet. I will be back soon!

Lost our reservation. Didn't handle it well at all. Wait was to be 20 minutes and after over an hour had to leave. How does this happen in this age? I have to give this place a star in order to post. Sorry sycamore.

Excellent food, a bit of a trip from Boston however worth it. The bar is well staffed and knowledgable, excellent with pairings for food as well. They make really nice food and have a great small restaurant environment. I very much loved the mousse, as well as the amazing chowder.

Sycamore is a lovely small restaurant with great atmosphere, wonderful drinks, and great food. The open kitchen is well done allowing diners to see the action without having to hear all the noise that can go along with it. The service was spot on. A shout out to Matt who was our server, who did a great job. He answered all our questions with a smile. Sycamore has a wonderful menu, we had leg of lamb and steak frites and both were top notch. Sides of cauliflower gratin and roasted brussell sprouts were great. Rabbit turine and agnolotti for starters. The cod croquettes from the snack menu were also wonderful. Warm chocolate cake and goat cheese cheesecake for desert. From start to finish, a great meal. Looking forward to going back.

I hate to review Sycamore because I want it to stay an amazing hidden gem! That said, we love it so much we want to support this fantastic establishment. This is hands down one of the best restaurants in Boston. We love everything about it except that it's in Newton. Fantastic drinks (bartenders are very knowledgeable!), exquisite food and overall amazing customer service. We are so happy to have Sycamore!

truthfully this is a 4.5 star review. we've eaten here twice now - both times were spot-on. maybe because the place is small...the food quality, the service and the ambiance are all really great. the menu is creative, the bar (albeit small) is very nice, and the location is great right in Newton Ctr (also walk to ice cream at four different options nearby). the only negative might be the small size - and thus the difficulty of getting a table (although we highly recommend sitting at the bar). enjoy.

This place is cute and cozy. It's on the smaller side so reservation is definitely recommended. We had a 6:30 reservation and we were seated right on time. Our server was pretty good, he came to check on us immediately and took our drink orders. I ordered the spicy chorizo for my appetizer and the chorizo was delicious. My friend and I decided to share the Southern board for our main meal. We were so happy with our choice. It was delicious and we get to try different things, such as the pulled pork sliders, crab cakes, southern fried shrimp, smoke sausage and fried green tomatoes and okra. Every single one of them was delicious. My other friend ordered the Shrimp and Corn chowder and that was delicious too. I ordered the sweet corn crème brulee for dessert and wasn't sure if that would work but I was surprised that it was pretty tasty. The service and food were definitely spot on and I would definitely come back again and try the other food that looks interesting.

Just came home from an evening at sycamore. We had a top drawer culinary feast. This is a small place and fills up quickly. Reservations are absolutely necessary. We sat at the bar and Scott, the bar manager made it delightful. Even as he did 10 things at once (talk about multi-tasking), we never felt abandoned. Our meal began with a blood orange martini and a novel Bloody Mary called ghost of Mary. Both were excellent. The chorizo croquetta was fabulous. Our main course was the lamb board, a dreamy combo of lamb sausage , lamb ribs, leg of lamb and another delectable lamb dish, all served with various perfect red rice, and other veggies. The chef brought us a special treat: grilled lamb liver. Amazing. Every and I mean every one of the lamb dishes was fantastic. Every veggie that came with the lamb perfectly paired. You want to know about dessert? Of all the best choices, Scott recommended beignets with a dulce de leche sauce. He was right. The little beignets were tiny pillows of pure pleasure. In summary, this is a must for foodies, not just suburban sorts; I'd put this up against any urban eatery. Yes it's noisy. Yes it's hard to get parking in Newton Centre. And yes: it's worth any hassle to dine at Sycamore.

House churned butter with rock salt for topping fresh baked crusty bread. The ragu pictured is excellent. House red is a Tempranillo. Buena Vista Social Club playing as background music. A good experience...

Certainly one of the best I have been to in a long time. Something unique about this place ; food and staff are top class !!We couldn't get a reservation as it was last minute but we sat at the bar after 10 minutes. This was actually great as the entertaining barman kept everyone amused. Impressed when I saw bar staff hold wine glasses up to the light to ensure they were clean. Everything in fact was spotless. Nice to finally see clean bathrooms in a restaurant Both my wife's and my food was excellent. Tried 3 appetizers and 2 main courses ( pork and chicken- excellent). Dessert which I don't normally try was great. Cranberry bread pudding ( or something like that :) ) I'm going back soon !!

I went to Sycamore last Saturday night. Made a reservation at 5:30 and was promptly seated. The space is awesome - small bar area and then a small dining area. You can see into the kitchen and you feel like you are at an upscale neighborhood restaurant. We started with the marinated olives and the white bean purée. Very good! I was a little disappointed in the braised beef. For being slow cooked for so long - it lacked some flavor. The carrots were absolutely delicious but the pierogi was just ok. My girlfriend had the cobia which is a dense meat white fish. It had an Asian flair and it was very good - much better than the beef. Finished off with the beignets. Very disappointing. We didn't even finish it - wasted calories. Overall I was pretty disappointed in the food. But I want to come back. I know there are other dishes that I would love to get. The service was fantastic. I'll just skip the dessert next time!

What a wonderful addition to Newton. We have dined at both 10 tables locations and I have to say this was better then both! The menu was creative and delicious. The atmosphere was warm and cozy and I love the fact the bar will be open till midnight 7 days a week. This will become a frequent spot we visit!

We were at Sycamore on Superbowl Sunday for dinner. We had made online reservations as we were in from out of town visiting our future son-in-law. Due to some unknown snafu, our reservation did not show up in Sycamore's system. However, the restaurant graciously accommodated us on a very busy night - and we had a superb table to boot! Thank you Sycamore!! It just got better from there. We sampled some snacks and the warm gougeres were delicious - savory, warm and oozing wonderful cheese. My husband had the Steak Frites. The steak was cooked perfectly to his request and the fries were crispy and plentiful. I had the Mediterranean Chicken which was tasty and extremely moist but was missing the green olives that make this type dish so distinctive. Our soon to be son-in-law had the Seafood Stew which was full of shrimp and mussels, was very hearty and perfect for a cold, rainy night. All in all, three excellent dishes. The highlight, however, were the desserts. We shared the Hot Chocolate & Beignets as well as a Peanut Butter Bar with Banana Ice Cream. Both were fantastic but the Beignets were amazing. Not the type of beignet you'd get in New Orleans - the light, fluffy variety dusted in powdered sugar. These were dense, rich, and dusted with granulated sugar but the dense texture is necessary for a deep dunk into the incredibly thick and velvety hot chocolate. The service was outstanding and we never felt rushed even though we knew they were squeezing us in. We'll definitely be back.

An absolute surprise in newton. Great menu and fantastic staff. In its genre plays at a national level and certainly not defined by its association with JP/camb ten tables.

Sycamore has wonderfully delicious, beautifully prepared and presented, graciously served food. The only drawback is that it is too loud to have a comfortable conversation. Brick walls bounce noise. How about some sound baffling? Farmstead Table has done a fine job of the menu and the sound levels are conducive to conversation. Sycamore would help itself enormously if it added acoustic tile to the ceiling, or anything to cancel out some of the background blare. .

Had a delightful dinner at Sycamore last night. The service was excellent; waitstaff is knowledgeable and there when you need them -- just the right amount of attentiveness. Nice pace for the meal, too; courses arrived with a little time in between, but not too much. We started with the oysters, which were fresh and sweet. Then we shared the meat board, which was a combo of petite filets, a Reuben sandwich with house-made sauerkraut, a house-smoked kielbasa with mustard spaetzle, and marrow with oxtail. All items were so good and cooked to perfection. I've never had kielbasa so moist and flavorful. For dessert we had the apple crostata and beignets, both of which were excellent. Sycamore is defintely on my list of restaurants to re-visit.

Service is inconsistent, presentation is unremarkable, food is ok. Room is small and also unremarkable. Be aware their policy is to turn tables every 1 hr 45min, so everything is rushed.

Doesn't get any better!!!! The food was AMAZING and the drinks were just as amazing if not more amazing. Have been there twice and wish I lived closer. Fresh, local, creative, delicious... you must go if you haven't been!

The food is delicious and service is superb! We were able to sit at the bar after waiting for 30 minutes since we don't have a reservation. Not ideal but the food had made up for it. The ingrdients were fresh and plate was nicely presented. Little pricey but well worth it. Will definitely be back!

First experience at Sycamore on New Year's Eve. Staff accommodated our party of 2 with short notice. Gracious and attentive service, though a bit forgotten by the end of the meal when the restaurant was near peak. Agnolotti: excellent. Steak frites: a superb rendering of a classic bistro dish. I tried the New Year Eve prix fixe menu. All dishes were nicely prepared but lacked a depth of flavor and complexity that I expected from a special menu. The kitchen is still working through some issues as several tables, including ours, waited quite a long time between appetizer and main course. We also waited 15 minutes for a chocolate torte (that was prepared in advance).

We make it a point to try all new restaurants in the Boston area but we were not able to get into the very busy Sycamore until tonight. We can say that Sycamore is in our top 3. For starters, the bread and drinks are amazing. We had the best swordfish we've ever eaten and the bluefish pate was to die for. The cauliflower side with raisins, pine nuts and capers is exceptional. Jason, our waiter, is superb - not only incredibly funny, friendly and adorable, but also a really great waiter. Good thing we live within walking distance, because Sycamore is going to become our new neighborhood spot.

The pig board was amazing, much more interesting and sophisticated than I was expecting. Fantastic vegetables and grains accompanying each version of pork and importantly, pork fat. White wine as recommended by Tim was terrific. Serious but relaxed place for drinks and food. Great service!

What a find! Inventive dishes, fresh, seasonal. Fun, funky cocktails. Room is nice - informal, low lighting. The aspargus and baby shrimp appetizer with grilled ramps was so delicious, as was the heavenly (but rich) parsnip soup with duck confit. Yumsville. Service was not great (kind of slow), but okay.

I love the lighting but that is about as good as it gets.Limited vegetarian options and only selective guests get preferential seating. The staff doesn't get it and with so many other restaurants to choose from I would pass here.

Great atmosphere, but the service really takes the cake here! I took a friend to celebrate her birthday; I mentioned this when making the reservation but completely forgot to say anything the night we arrived. Well, they certainly remembered and when we ordered dessert, brought it out with a candle and a flourish. It was very thoughtful--and reflected the general tone of the evening. As others have mentioned, the exposed brick and wood give it a really warm feeling. Our waiter was a delight and very attentive. The food was delicious as well--the yogurt panna cotta dessert was amazing. The drinks were great--they don't have a huge list of cocktails but they've obviously put a lot of thought into the ones they do have.

Sycamore is a great place for nice dinner out. It has a casual, relaxed atmosphere with fresh, delicious food much of which comes from local farms. A great place for a nice dinner out. One of the cocktail specials even had an ingredient from the server's garden. We could not get a reservation one day ahead, even for a Wednesday night, but they were kind enough to put us on a wait list and to let us know that there are a few high bar tables with the full menu that aren't reserved. We went without a reservations and got a bar table easily, though we did go pretty early. (They actually did call us, probably to offer a last-minute reservation, but we were already there and did not hear the phone. The place is a bit loud, but not enough to bother most people.) The staff seemed happy and the service was great. We had oysters on the half shell and the summer farm board, and all was really fresh and tasty. They had a good craft beer selection, draught and bottled, and some creative cocktails. We did not try the desserts, but there were some great sounding ones using local seasonal ingredients. The prices were very reasonable considering the quality of the food and the originality. I expect that Sycamore is definitely going to be around for a while, and we'll be going back.
