We were very disappointed - even angered. We don't eat meat and what we ordered wasn't even sufficient for an appetizer. For the money we paid, we shouldn't have gone away hungry. What a joke! The place looks nice and is in a trendy area. I acknowledge that most people think it is a good place - but I presume they got meat dishes and our experience was vastly different. I have been in Tapas places where one could make a meal of what was served. Not here. Not close. The service was good. The food? What food? It almost seemed fraudulent.

This was the first "date night" restaurant we've been to since State Road in MV and must say that if you consider yourself a foodie, then this is a must destination. Stand outs are the squid tacos, chicken wings, octopus and scallop empanadas. We finished the gluttony with cheddar honey ice cream and brownie fritters. Amazing cocktails to boot. Shout out to our man, Alvin.

I really wanted to like this place: it has interesting/unique flavors, small plates and opportunities to try a lot of different things, an outstanding waitstaff and superb service, well-executed cocktails, a cool vibe, and a philanthropic bent (they paired with Reserve to donate $ to DFCI the evening we were there). But I couldn't help feeling like the experience didn't match the very large price tag, and left fairly disappointed (and not as full as I'd like, for the price). Cocktails are their strong suit; they have a small list, but they're well executed and well priced. My $10 strawberry basil margerita was delicious, and my $10 special after-dinner cocktail (can't remember the name, but it was bourbon + coffee + montenegro whipped cream) was the best thing I had all night. Also worth mentioning is their complementary freshly baked rolls that come with tapenade and honey butter, which I could have eaten all night and have been happy. For two, they recommend 5-6 plates of food, so we ordered: -Pig ear nachos ($10): recommended. Worth the price mainly for uniqueness, but also taste- I could devour multiple bowls of these with a beer and not be sorry, they were very satisfying with traditional nacho flavors (sour cream, tomato, lettuce, etc). -Asparagus in a snuggie (~$12): skip. This was a small bundle of 4-5 spears of asparagus wrapped in a spring roll wrapper in a very sour sauce. The price is neither worth the amount nor the taste. -Oysters a la Parmesana ($12): skip. Tasty, but 2 oysters for $12? Who can afford it? -Lamb anticuchos ($12): recommended. Still too pricey IMO for two small skewers of lamb and veggies, but the flavors were excellent and it was cooked perfectly. -Papas fritas ($6): OK choice if you're in the mood for fries- these were the cheapest thing we had, and they were pretty solid (although nothing terribly special). -Pistachio ricotta cake ($8): skip. Not as tasty as the description promised, plus the portion was way too small for the price tag (it was basically in an overblown baby food jar). I think with any small plates place, some items are just naturally a better value portion/protein/price-wise, and it's often hard to tell that without some trial-and-error. At Comedor, unfortunately it seems that most of their items are portioned really too small IMO, and often the quality and taste just doesn't overcome the huge price tag (especially compared with other restaurants). I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place for cocktails and snacks, but might reserve a full-blown dinner for a night when a very rich friend is paying.

We had the most wonderful dinner! Suggestion (as we did) was to have the waiter pick their choice from each category! We got two vegetarian dishes, one meat, one fish and dessert. All of them were insanely delicious however I am still dreaming of the tempura brownie bites which they paired with avocado/mint ice cream. Staff was wonderful, gave great suggestions, and the environment was great! Oh and I can't forget about the grilled cheese, never would have picked which made me even happier to have because it was incredible.

Been to this place 3 x! Great drinks, all handcrafted so be patient, great variety on wine list. The service is very good even when they're busy! Strawberry basil margarita is a must! Food is very good, small plates, had the lamb sausage skewer, Jonny crab cakes- these were so so, sauce was good but couldn't find any crab in them. Had the mini grilled cheese, Octopus- very good not overcooked, roasted artichokes w/ mushroom, need to stuff these w/'something as they're missing something. I hope this place stays in business Bc it's excellent

I mean, it may be a good place in Newton Center but overall it's only fair. The food was fine. As other people have said they have a lot of options which is great for a group but none were particularly good or stood out as great. Nothing was bad either. I feel like that's what two stars is. I did like the setting--it's a cool restaurant with open space and a nice looking bar area and the hostess and manager were nice but our server was not that nice. I thought it was a little overpriced for what was provided. I would not recommend coming here and do not make a special trip at all. We had about 12 dishes and the only thing I thought was above average was the free olive bread with this delicious honey butter.
(2)Lauren F.
Amazing food and super fun. Really great service and relaxing. The bar is nice to sit at, but it is a small restaurant so I would strongly suggest a reservation. Must try the tempura brownies.
(5)M K.
Amazing food- creative and flavorful and delicious!! So good. The staff and service are excellent too, warm & friendly.
(5)Karen W.
We have several great meals at Comedor. Everything is freshly prepared, well seasoned and incredibly tasty. There were interesting combinations which worked well together. We particularly love the artichokes and mushroom dish, the new asparagus crepe was wonderful and the beet salad was great as always. We enjoyed several seafood and and meat dishes as well. The desserts were very interesting and despite some unusual ingredients, quite delicious. Excellent wines by the glass and great choice of beer. We had a long wait at our last visit and the management went out of their way to accommodate us and welcome us back this time. A great addition to the local food scene!

My girlfriend and I went here on the early side on a Saturday night. The restaurant had a few people in it which was nice, I could see it getting loud. It had good service; our waitress was nice. The decor of the restaurant was spare but not cheap looking (for the most part). The restaurant is farm to table and the bartenders/cocktails seemed original and well-done. We did have wine though, so that's just an impression. We ordered five tapas plates: the pork meatballs, the kale salad, the papas fritas, the crab johnnycakes, and the burger. The johnnycakes were the worst plate. The meatballs were the best. In general, the meat was the best part of the meal. The kale salad and fries were delicious but nothing mind blowing. In general it was a good meal, and I would eat some of the plates again. The johnnycakes were a waste of money, and they need to rethink the flavors that went into the dish. This place would have received four stars if it were at 2/3 or 3/4 of the price it was at. For five plates and one glass of wine each, it was almost $90 tip included. I just think the 10-14 dollar tapas plates overestimate the quality and construction of the meals.
(3)Winnie Rose N.
We sat at the bar. Drinks were great and bartenders were very friendly. We shared a few plates - the chicken wings were delicious! Plates were small, but reasonably priced. We will definitely be back soon!
(5)Kunal C.
Great ambience, outstanding food! The portions are small, tapas like, we ordered 6 dishes between the two of us and enjoyed every single one. Our favorite was the lamb skewers with peas. The food menu changes often so you may not see some of the dishes mentioned by other reviewers. The drinks menu is small but quite good, tried the old fashioned and the suite. The place seemed busy but you should be able to get reservations on the same day, at least until the foodies discover this little gem of a place. T is close by and there is plenty of off street parking.
(5)Raul o.
Really spectacular food that I would put ahead of other Boston area tapas places like Toro and Barcelona.
(5)Tom B.
My wife and I have been here several times now, once with my in-laws and twice with our toddler. The service has been phenomenal and the food outstanding. We are vegetarian and there are ample delicious options for us (and plenty of meat and seafood choices too). The decor is light and airy. But I keep coming back to the service, which has been unfailingly welcoming and warm. This has quickly become our favorite restaurant.
(5)Mike A.
Very much enjoyed out meal here. There are many options for everyone, vegetarian, meat lover, or seafood lover. The plates are all around $10, and expect to eat 2-3 a person. I recommend the Pork loin, the scallop empenadas, and the grilled cheese. Everything was good. Drinks were good as well -- I had two and both were made well; especially the old fashioned. Service was wonderful -- everyone was friendly and had good suggestions. We'll be coming back soon!

Had a great dinner at Comedor last night. I've only taken the T outbound toward the suburbs twice in the last 5 years. The only reason I thought of this is because as we headed toward the D line after dinner, I realized this is going to become a more regular trip... Thanks to the deliciousness of Comedor. MUST TRY: Pescadito Frito and Carne Mechado. Those were the favorite tapas of the night- so flavorful. And... The ice cream. OMG the ice cream. We rarely order dessert, but our server offered us a taste of the ice cream to help us make a decision. The selection changes weekly and last night it was Olive Oil flavored. Now, I scooped ice cream for 8 years and a self-proclaimed ice cream aficionado. I think this may have been the best ice cream I've ever had. We thought it almost tasted like a sweet cheese it was so creamy. The only odd thing we noticed was the average age of the diner at Comedor. Everyone around us was middle age and older. Quite a different crowd than at a typical Boston restaurant. Maybe it's a Newton thing? Regardless, the quality of food+drink were excellent and I'll be back!
(5)Jenn B.
The food was delicious and is cooked to order so it's always fresh. From the host to the servers, everyone was very friendly and welcoming. They all seem to be working as one big team. Highly recommend the lobster dish and the Irish burger if it's still on the menu. The chorizo mash was amazing. Definitely worth the drive if you live in the city.
(5)Melissa W.
Every bite is better than the last! The staff is knowledgable, friendly, and fun. They're always willing to make a suggestion and you would do well to take them!
(5)Louis R.
Excellent food and service. Staff well trained, attentive and knowledgeable. Its attention to the small details that make for a great dining experience. This isn't a five star restaurant but I am giving them five stars for doing what they do well. Small plates with a Chilean spin. Yummy, fresh food tastefully presented in a welcoming atmosphere.
(5)K. H.
I don't even know where to begin with all the good things to say about this place! My boyfriend is Chilean, and we were both SO excited to see how authentic the food would be. Well, it was spot on! He even said certain dishes made him feel like he was back home. My personal favorite was the scallop empanadas, but pretty much everything we had was amazing! I highly recommend getting a pisco sour for a drink! The staff was incredibly friendly and very accommodating! We cannot wait to go back. The only thing we would change would be a little bit larger portions (small plate style dining)..other then that this place is perfection.
(5)Elizabeth R.
Second trip. My first meal 5*. Last night, 3*. The first time I ate here the meal seemed nicely timed and I had a great dining experience. Our drinks came out first, then tapas more or less one by one so we could enjoy and savor. Last night the food came well before the drinks, and all the tapas were all brought to the table at once. We were in and out in less than an hour and I felt very rushed. It was later in the evening (8:45 reservation) so maybe they wanted to close up shop and get home. The food was ok. The beet and Kale salads were very good. Swordfish seemed a little overcooked. Artichoke was excellent the first time I had it but last night it was cold by the time I got a chance to eat it. We had a brownie thing for desert that I would not recommend.
(3)Namcy L.
Food was amazing small plates enough for two to get a bite but not much more Service was good but food came out slowly from open kitchen Restaurant is super noisy so not for intimate dining.

Been to Chile many times, lived there too. This place not only does NOT serves Chilean food (neither based, nor inspired) Visited This place twice and the first visit was better than the second (both times mediocre, I could order just a drink. Been there with friends despite having warned them... They were dissatisfied as well most of them having been to Chile) The bad attitude of the old lady who plays hostess and the rude waiter makes this place a No, No on my list. They were not willing to accomodate a Gluten Free diet after we called ahead of time to check with the chef and were assured that we'll be ok. Based on what they served and the impression of 6 of the 8 people I have been there with (2 of my friends will eat anything and be satisfied with a Mc Happy Meal). Prices are too high for the menu, maybe they need that to pay for the high rent and fun decore of this tiny place in the heart of Newton. I wanted to like you guys. Meh minus!

Went here for dinner. Still packed at 10pm on friday. They take reservations = awesome. The food is very flavorful. We had - papas fritas (french fries): nothing special IMO - beet salad: refreshing, yummy, crunchy with pistachios - pescadito frito (fried fish): nothing special, fish nugget is a bit tough to chew - burger: pretty good - estofado de pollo: good flavors - semola con leche (pudding like): best item of the night! Layers of flavors melt in your mouth. The service is superb. The dishes come out a bit slow because they do have a small open kitchen and less staffs. Drinks are great. We tried the margarita and mahattan. Manhattan is strong but not too overrpowering. Margarita is refreshing but could be stronger.
(4)Meaghan B.
Just delicious. I'd heard good things before going so I had high expectations and Comedor didn't disappoint. We got a drink at the bar since we arrived a few minutes early for our reservation. We ended up getting 6 plates (for 2 people) and tried to balance it with a couple heavier and a couple lighter items. It was definitely enough food and I was almost too full to enjoy the tempura brownie dessert. Food to try: Pimientos de Padron, Lamb Cazuela, Crispy Mussels. Everything we had was delicious but those were our favorites. Drink to try: Komodo Dragon I'm looking forward to going back sometime soon!

I was so excited when I saw this restaurant open. I was so prepared to love it, especially because I adore tapas. I read the bios of the owners on the website and had high expectations. But unfortunately, the food fell flat on our visit last night (6/10/15). Really flat. I ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, which was mediocre at best. For food, we ordered: -Ostras al la Parmesana- This was our first tapa. Essentially, it was an oyster covered in cheese. All I could taste was cheese. I was very unimpressed by it, but I kept an open mind and hoped the others would be better. -Burger of the Week "Fancy Burger"- This came out next and was anything but "fancy." The server said the chef prepared it medium-rare. No problem. This burger came out completely over cooked, probably medium- well. It was served on a Iggy's roll, which we thought was odd, and with a sweet dressing (essentially honey mustard). It did not taste good- now I was starting to get worried. -Spicy Pistachio Chicken wings- This was one of the better tapas. But it is hard to screw up a chicken wing in my mind. -N.E. Baked Hake- This was extremely salty and almost inedible. I did not get the concept of having a standard potato salad served with it. -Roasted Artichokes and Mushrooms- This was solid. Fresh vegetables with a slightly spicy white sauce. Good but not amazing. -Ninos Envueltos- This was one of the last to come out. To be frank, it was terrible. It was essentially store bought quinoa with veggies wrapped in zucchini. It reminded me a lot of something you would get at the Whole Foods Salad Bar. Ugh... now, I was super bummed. Overall, our experience that night was not good in terms of food. You can get much better tapas at other restaurants around the city for better prices. I will say that the service was very good. The hostess and our server, Andreas, were very polite. I also love the ambiance of the interior. Maybe we did not order well, but I was so disappointed. I am definitely open to giving it another try!

There's a unique "duende" about Comedor that even differentiates it from other 5-star ratings: everything about this place (from the portion sizes to the cocktails to the layout & atmosphere of the space itself) seems to be governed by a philosophy that everything should be done in a focused, measured, thoughtful manner such that it can be savored and appreciated--the value of quality over quantity. You can tell that the chefs/owners have their heart in this place, and the menu is truly a way to express the art of cooking...there are restaurants in the business of being a restaurant who have cooks and chefs, and then (less often) there are people who are natural chefs first, and subsequently open a restaurant as a canvas for their art....Comedor the latter. Everyone raves about the food, but don't miss the equally astounding care to cocktails; there is uncommon care in both the design & execution of the drink menu. Three things not to miss: 1.) the burger, which changes weekly...not quite a "slider", not quite a burger...just enough to be perfect. I think it's served on an Iggy's french roll. 2.) Jacob's Collins...a often-switched up version of a collins drink, depending on what infusion the chef as prepared. Last week it had a sprig of rosemary. 3.) tempura-fried brownie (can't say enough about that last one...normally dessert in a restaurant is outsourced and is a waste of time/money/calories...this..THIS one is not.
(5)Daniel D.
amazing cocktails and menu. perfect place for any date. a little higher priced than i would expect but it's very high quality so maybe it's justified.
(5)Sarah H.
Went last night. We sat at the bar and had a phenomenal meal. The bartender was excellent as well - the cocktails were delicious and every one of his recommendations was on point. Can't wait to go again!
(5)Kailene K.
We made a reservation for a Thursday night, unfortunately we were not seated until 40 minutes after our reservation and there really isn't a waiting area. It was very bright and nicely decorated but too small an area for the amount of tables. We could barely squeeze into our seats and my friend had to keep moving (mind you he is very skinny so not taking up much room) so the waiter could get to the corner table. We were squished in the middle and thus the waiter had a hard time talking to us. I heard him telling the people on the outside what everything was that came with the butter and was pissed that he just set it down on our table and walked away. It was too loud too. As for the food, it is okay, nothing I was dying over nor nothing would make me endure that atmosphere again. Everything seemed a little over salted. I was hoping to find a good tapas place without driving all the way to the South End or Brookline but alas I will continue that drive because this place did not fulfill anything.

Welcome to the neighborhood Comedor! I'm a business owner in the area and a well known "foodie"! My husband and I love to eat out and this is a new star on our list of "places to be"!! Great atmosphere. Open contemporary space but warm feeling. Really nice people and excellent food. ( a tiny bit noisy) Not a huge menu but plenty of interesting choices to share tapas style. The scallop sashimi on shredded Brussel Sprout salad was great! Actually everything was good. My hubby and dad don't eat white carbos so I was a bit sorry that the mushroom hash had so many potatoes but whatever they won't die if they ingest a few spuds. This is gonna be a go to place for us and plan on bringing many foodie friends. Kudos Comedor! We needed you! Hope we all come to see you so you make a true success here. Glad to have you! Erica
(4)J P.
well at first we couldn't find the restaurant so we asked a passerby if she knew where it was. She told us and said it wasn't very good! Undeterred we went anyhow and thank goodness we did - it was awesome. They serve small plates which I like. I had the swordfish with sunflower seeds, it is new on their menu and my friend had the oysters, then we ordered the shrimp with citrus, all very good, infused with subtle flavors and aesthetically appealing. They were just making an ice cream and I tasted it - orange and mild habanero, unbelievable scrumptious. A delightful and different evening.
(5)Nicole W.
Great food and great service. Friendly little modern American-Chilean style neighborhood restaurant. Portion sizes are modest, but each dish is composed with a complex array of delicious flavors, leaving the palate satisfied. I could keep going on about the food - especially the desert (porcini mushroom and honey ice cream made in house- divinely rich, the perfect combo of sweet and savory), but the service deserves just as much praise. Alvin (owner, I assume), personally talked us through the menu, vividly describing each plate and making fabulous recommendations. The rest of the restaurant staff, as well were friendly and upbeat. Great experience, can't wait to go back!

Celebrated a double birthday dinner last night at Comedor. Having lived in Chile, I was intrigued about how they'd bring the Chilean into the American.. They did so with spices like Merken and chimichurri sauce. We ordered 10 tapas for a group of 4, which was a good amount. Some were better than others: the ribs! the provoleta! Others, like the squash, not so much.. The 3 leches cake and the Chilean wine carafe were both excellent. Why not 5 stars? The lights were bright and the music was kind of loud/jarring (not really dinner music..). The wait staff was kind of flighty, or maybe just tired. But the place is very nicely decorated and feels trendy, the open kitchen is great, and I'm glad we braved Friday traffic to try this new spot.

Amazing family operated addition to the Newton dining scene. I tried most of the menu and loved it all.
(5)Michael R.
Being the former founder of a city/regional magazine there are two things I know really well: small towns and the independent restaurants of said small towns. They are always founded on a dream, fueled by a passion and funded on a bootstrap. Experiencing them can sometimes be heartbreaking and oh so rarely heartwarming. Comedor happily fell into the latter. From the warm welcomes from a familiar hostess to a small 50-seat dining room that is artistically decorated with a simple yet impactful artistic design, you know from the first step that something unique was about to happen. We were visiting close friends in Newton (a quaint burb of Boston) who new the chef from the local food scene and we were delighted to try something new that they were excited about. The open-air kitchen design supplied front row seats for my fellow foodies and I (note: a kitchen seat is always the best seat in the house, you get to see the action and interactions and treats from the chef and staff are commonplace). Sitting court-side one can't help but be impressed by the hulking stainless steel heart of the kitchen. Hood, slamander, stove and stations all glowing with a brand new new-car sheen. This is a kitchen that can kick out some serious grub and it was obviously built for speed. Best of all, it seems like this tightly knit crew has taken it for some serious test drives. The wine list was varied, well appointed and affordable. Nice. The menu was easily organized by category with descriptions that painted wild visions of deliciousness. Even Nicer. We sampled what must have been everything on the oversized-tapas style menu with nary a miss in the whole bunch. Highlight dishes from my recollection included the roasted corn tamale with a wicked verde sauce, wild mushroom hash, a colorful beet dish, scallop sashimi and spiced pork ribs. The very unique Provoleta Asada (a cassoulet of melted cheese and a fresh herb chimichuri served with toasted bread for dipping) was in particular heart skippingly unique. Undoubtedly Newton has a new shining star for all the locals to love and support. But it is the draw of big city Bostonians that will put these adventurous new owners at ease. Boston-based city dwellers should rest assured that this experience is well worth the drive. Heck, I felt it was worth flying from LA to experience.
(5)Stephie F.
Food, drinks, server, atmosphere were all great. Some of the dishes had a long lag time coming out, but we didn't mind. We will definitely be back soon!
(4)Pamela T.
I liked the food at Comedor quite a bit. The service was a little off, but our server was very nice. What I didn't like - was the noise. I don't mind a nice "vibe" but I don't like screaming at my dinner guests. It was so loud the server couldn't hear us without saying "I am sorry I couldn't hear that," leaning in and having us repeat ourselves. I might come back on an off peak day and an off peak time, but will probably not be a regular customer. It's too bad.
(3)Sanjay V.
Good addition to the Newton food scene. Good food , good service , would have given 4 , but very very very noisy!!',they need to do something about the noise levels , perhaps using sound reducing panels or whatever .
(3)Stephanie L.
We had a great experience between the food & customer service & general atmosphere. Everything we ordered was great; we got: pig ear nachos, bay scallop empanada, roasted artichokes + mushrooms, burger of the week, crabcakes, and their special ice cream (it was a mix of various flavors, including olive oil! Weird-sounding, but surprisingly delicious.) The place is admittedly pricey especially for a tapas restaurant, but if you're okay with that then I highly recommend Comedor.
(5)Jamie S.
Prefaced by the fact we were there with a very large group for a special occasion brunch. Roughly 30 people. The restaurant was nicely laid out. I loved both the décor and the fact the kitchen and bar are open to the room. The brunch menu was limited, but looked delicious! I knew in advance that the chef and his wife had previously been sous-chef of my 2 favorite restaurants, 51 Lincoln and Waban Kitchen, and had no doubt the food would be excellent. It was. Everyone loved their food! As someone with food allergies (dairy and gluten), my options boiled down to 1. Eggs and Bacon. Not exactly an exciting sounding dish in a Chilean-American restaurant, but man was it good! 2 perfectly poached eggs. 2 pieces of ultra-thick, crisp bacon. Small side of mesclun micro-greens. Under it all was this divine sweet Chilean chili-sauce. So good! What we were not prepared for is that Comedore serves its offerings small-plate style (think Tapas). There were also several specials, which the servers walked around table side to offer. Unfortunately I could not eat any, but most of the people at my table took advantage. The favorite was by far the jamón tostada, followed by the crab-stuffed Johnny cakes. My husband had the empanadas stuffed with local cheddar and drizzled with local honey and chili pepper. Smelled so good. The orange juice was fresh pressed and generously poured. You could tell the restaurant was going through new growing pains. Perhaps because there were so many of us, but the dishes came out in batches as they were ready. For some at my table, those that were served first were long done before the last few received their dishes. That was a little odd. I would definitely plan to give this place another go. The dinner menu looked really good!
(4)Lee D.
The food is horrible and prices are outrageous for what you get. You get a tiny plate with bite size portion of what does not taste good and does not look good. The whole idea of tapas style restaurants is that your get to try a lot of different items at reasonable prices. Usually it is fun and great food. You get neither here. Tiny below mediocre tasting plates at $15 - $20 dollars that simply are not worth the price. Food is simply unsatisfying and service leaves a lot to be desired.
(1)Taupe F.
We loved Comedor. Great food, great atmosphere, succulent food, and friendly service.
(5)Jeff B.
We went with another couple and had high hopes, because the menu sounded great. The food was good, but not spectacular. I don't recall the dishes....sorry! It was loud. LOUD. We couldn't hear each other across the table. LOUD. Service was uneven. Our waiter disappeared for long stretches and was difficult to flag down.
(3)Lee O.
pretty gosh darn good all round, when it's this good it doesn't need a review, you just go an savor the world of Comedor. do it.
(5)Matthew S.
Felt like something different and came across Comedor on Yelp. This place is FANTASTIC! The quaint, modern, eclectic decor grabs you right away. My wife and I have never had tapas until our visit. Let me put it this way...we left feeling satisfied, but not overfilled (we shared 3 plates), our palates were overjoyed and our spirits divine. Our server Manny was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and super friendly. He said the staff samples all of the meals so they can speak from experience which clearly showed. Its tough to limit the number of plates you order because you want to try everything! I'll close by saying that you HAVE to try to tempura brownies...UNREAL. Can't wait to go back!
(5)Kim S.
It doesn't get better than this. Ever. Everything here is out of this world, including the service. Bravo!!!
(5)Emily F.
Amazing. Definitely go. The food is out of this world. The staff is amazing. The owners are great and knowledgeable. The best food ever.
(5)D G.
Great food with fresh ingredients and a fun, lively atmosphere. Eat at the chef's bar to see the husband and wife team in action preparing the meals, or make a reservation if you want to linger a bit longer at a table. Eric the bartender makes an excellent Mint Julep
(5)Debra K.
They did a beautiful job on the inside. We sat at the 'Chef's Bar' and watched them cook. It really makes dining out more of an 'experience'. There's a great casual vibe and the service was wonderful. It's all small plates so you can try a lot of things. It was all good, but we especially liked the duck meatballs (I'm not normally a big fan of duck, or meatballs!), the tomato salad, the tamales and the mushroom hash. The scallop sashimi was good too, but honestly the brussel sprouts were the best part (and somewhat overpowered the scallop). The beet salad (like everything else) was very fresh. The brownie dessert was also divine. Can't wait to go back and try some other things.
(5)Fernando S.
Totally disappointing, at least for this price point. It's a weird in-between tapas and a (fulll) dish, that ends being none of the two. We ordered about 10 "dishes" most of them only OK, not really tasty. Portions were small, and the dishes came with odd delays (the first one about 10 min. or more before the next!). Everybody in our party left quite unhappy, even surprised. We all love fusion and ethnic food, and here there was clearly an attempt at this, but objectively it just did not work well. Sorry for not being more positive, but except for a nice greeter, even the service was poor!

Wow! The flavors of these dishes were so delicious. My taste buds were dancing. Enjoyed meeting the husband/wife team who were both so welcoming and talented! Prawns in a blanket dish was my favorite. Actually, everything was amazing - pork belly empanadas with a refreshing apple hazelnut salad, ribs with a mustard sauce, and mushroom hash with a perfectly poached egg on top. We are definitely going back! Loved the ambience and our waiter, Andres, was so attentive and charming. Our new fave!

I've visited this place twice now and it's definitely a unique and great addition to Newton Center. I would just like to start by mentioning that the bread they bring out and the butters for it are AMAZING!!! The first time I went I had the scallops empanada and the roasted artichoke and mushrooms. My friend had the quinoa. The scallops are not what you would except. They are wrapped inside a dough with a sort of spicy red sauce and fried. I've never had scallops cooked like this and it wasn't quite what I had envisioned, but they were good nonetheless and I ended up ordering them again the next time I went. The artichoke and mushrooms were good, not great, but good. The quinoa was also an interesting dish. It was wrapped in I think zucchini and the presentation was quite pretty. On my second visit, I brought my vegan friend, who really appreciated all the different vegetarian options (much better than a lot of other restaurants). We split a whole bunch of different veggie dishes, which were all in the good to great area. My only complaint about this place is that the dishes are all good on their own, but nothing really seems to 'go together.' I guess that is the point of tapas style eating though. In addition, for what you are getting and portion size, some of the dishes are a tad overpriced. Also, it does get quite loud in there if you visit during dinner time on Friday or Saturday. They also have a really cute (although quite small) outdoor seating area which is great for the summer. All in all, Comedor is a great addition to Newton Center, I look forward to visiting again in the future!

The food was great but with the small plates... suggested you guys order more than you want
(4)Alan N.
My wife and I tried 3 seafood and 3 vegetable dishes. Every one was delicious and different. The service was excellent. On a crowded Saturday night, however, the restaurant was very noisy, the only reason for giving only 4 stars.
(4)Rob G.
Wonderful meal. Casual but very creative food. The proprietors are really sweet - a husband and wife team. Highly recommend the crispy mussels and mushroom hash. A real gem that is as good as any restaurant in Boston.
(5)Valerie G.
Excellent ambience and perfectly crafted foods. The selection of foods is small yet diverse. The various tapas compliment each other well and the service is friendly and welcoming.
(5)Carol S.
I love the creative dishes and watching the chefs from the bar. The noise level can be unbearable at times, meaning that I've had to literally shout so that others sitting next to me can hear me. I've found that the menu items can be hit or miss, but the hits are stunning. I wish they had a few lower priced reds by the glass.
(4)Aaron B.
Great food. Great service. We will be back again. Loved the spicy wings, mussels, and ceviche.
(4)Todd C.
Horrible! Awful! This place is terrible! It's a total rip off. Tiny, no, minuscule servings for as much as a dinner elsewhere. Think $15 for 3 tablespoons of rice. And the food was mostly fried and pretty bad. I feel like I get completely ripped off. DO NOT GO HERE! I dropped over $70 and had to go to Chipotle after - for better food, more food, at a better price.
(1)Ted D.
A spectacular, spontaneous snowy evening sitting at the bar. The waiter was friendly and patient, walking us through the menu and making suggestions, we split several dishes, including incredibly flavorful octopus "bites", a scallop empanada that defied comparison, a beet salad, the slider special, and a Brussels sprouts with chorizo that utterly converted a life-long hater. Finished with a ridiculously good homemade vanilla ice cream with jalapeno(!). Ask the chef (who's cooking 10' from you) to do something a little different--and no problem. Portions are perfect for sharing and tasting. The cocktails were not to be outdone....original, generous and outstanding. Just like the chef, the bartender encouraged us to experiment with their recipes, the results of which were amazing. Cannot say enough..my wife and I eat out a lot, and can't remember a more interesting and delicious meal.
(5)CC C.
Excellent spot in Newton corner. Tapas style with options for any appetite. We ordered the artichoke/mushroom plate, spicy pickles, crab cakes and lamb sausage. Our meal was excellent and we finished with the homemade ice cream.

Went last night with a few friends. Place has a great vibe, terrific wait staff. We sat at a table but I will definitely sit at the bar with my husband. Food was different, fun and tasty. The fried mussels were fabulous, the prawns were awesome as was the mushroom bolognese. Those little challah rolls for sopping up the sauce is brilliant, especially since you're in Newton. Going back for sure.

Wanted a quick foodie fix on a cold winter night without having to make my way to Back Bay or Cambridge (living in Brighton). In less than 15 mins on the T I was at Comedor (located right off the Newton Center subway stop). I don't usually enjoy alcohol but waoh their Diablo Blanco Chilean version of white sangria is so fruity and more importantly tasty! (you feel the effect afterwards ha!). Place isn't big so make a reservation especially if you have a party larger than 2 and restaurant can get busy. They do have some bar seating but not sure if you need to reserve for those. Creative tapas at reasonable pricing. Many vegetarian tapas. Server was attentive and nice and had great recommendations Had the following for dinner: BRUSELAS PICANTES (chorizo, merkén, cremé fraiche) pretty good but had similar dish somewhere else before LAMB CAZUELA (kimbe carrots, yukon potatoes, chilis, cilantro) love it, juicy and tender and the juice from the lamb is so tasty CALAMARES RELLENOS (camarillio black lentils, almond, caviar) must try, one of a kind item, tasty and beautifully presented PEEKYTOE CHUPE (maine crab, artisinal cheese, mesclun) for cheese lovers, tasty but not the most calorie friendly JAKOB'S ICE CREAM Bourbon ice cream for the night (flavor changes weekly!) I am already looking forward to going back. So lucky to have such an awesome restaurant near home.
(5)Edmund E.
Been here twice. Loved both times. Welcome addition to the area!
(5)Alissa G.
This place is beyond incredible. Everything we had (dinner, drinks, dessert) was amazing!!! And as an added bonus, the kitchen is right in the middle of the dining area, so you can watch all the chefs work while you eat. We are definitely going to make this a regular spot to dine.
(5)Tim N.
Amazing place! We've had a wonderful time with super warm atmosphere and delicious food. The ice cream is home made at the restaurant each week! Amazing time.
(5)Melissa M.
I ate here Sunday evening with a friend. The high quality of the chimichurri plate and burger slider were enough to convince me to come back. The wait staff was also quite friendly. My only qualm was that their cocktails were lacking in both selection and taste quality. I ordered the daiquiri listed on the menu and it was quite tart. Later I had this apple cinammon spiced drink from the menu that tasted like it had cumin or some unsavory spice that didn't resemble the apple taste they were going for, so I'll stick with the wine list in the future.
(4)thomas c.
Wow. The food here is amazing. The braised ribs were amazingly tender, the mustard sauce out of this world, and some of the best fries I've ever had. And then a locally sourced rabbit empanada with a heirloom carrot salsa!?!? Everything was cooked to absolute perfection and presented beautifully. And it's not just about the food here either, the craft prohibition style cocktails are out of this world. It won't take long for lines out the door to be an every night occurrence here.
(5)Ingrid B.
My new favorite place! My husband and I live in Newton Centre and discovered this place less than a month ago when we were dropping a friend off at the T. We stopped in for a drink (expertly made cocktails and really delicious wine selection) and were very pleasantly surprised. We have been back FOUR TIMES! The staff is super friendly and the food is amazing! I really like how the menu changes and sitting at the bar is such a treat. I love watching the magic happen! Everything about this place is handpicked/handmade/one of a kind!
(5)Ali G.
I came here on a whim and had a great experience. The service is absolutely amazing!!! Probably some of the best service I have experinced in the city and definitley in newton. my waiter michael was so enthusiastic and attentive. The food was very tastey and fresh. I had the rabbit empanadas and the roasted zuchinni stuffed with quinoa. When you come here you will get tapas style where there are small plates but larger than your average tapas plate. The food is on the higer end but still manageable for a nice night out. Wine was very nice and really liked watching the kitchen with the open layout. Good date place or friday night out. Hopefully they can keep providing good food and service as they get busier because they definitely will get busy!
(4)Karen S.
The most fun, nice vibe, creative restaurant in Newton! Oh, and by the way, the food is AMAZING! This is the type of going out experience people want! Eating at Comedor was like being transported to Portland, OR-the foodie capitol of the US (where I am lucky enough to visit fairly regularly). The food is unique, delicious and everyone is fun and friendly. The excitement that the staff brings to the place is contagious. My husband surprised me for my birthday and we had 10 people at Comedor all sitting at the bar (including my 88 year old mother-in-law who loved it). They had just recently opened and this was their first party(I'm a bit overdue in writing this review). My husband worked with them on the menu ahead of time and it was great as no one had to decide what to order. They brought the plates to share at a nice pace with explanations from the wonderful waiter. The bar ended up being really fun as we could get up and move around stealing bites of each other's food. The small plates were a perfect size and everything was delicious! The inventiveness of the dishes was really great with the shaved pumpkin salad, lamb meatballs and tempura fried brownie dessert getting great reviews from all (actually everything was really good). The owners were as busy as could be but were sweet enough to come over and wish me a Happy Birthday (and let us sample a ricotta-type cheese they had been making all evening). Then, the guy who had helped my husband with the planning ran out and wanted to wish me a HB. None of this was b/c they had to-you just feel they want to share their excitement. The only slight negative-it's a bit noisy. Here's to Comedor! Thank You for picking Newton.
(5)Natalie K.
Excellent tapas . We ordered the beet salad, shredded beef, linguica, French fries, burger of the week, sweet potato buns, squash , artichokes and mushrooms . All dishes were great, nicely presented . I also ordered an apricot margarita that was neither sweet not sour, but perfectly balanced and easy to drink.
(5)Rachel R.
Yum! I dragged my husband who was apprehensive since he hadn't heard of Comedor, but we really liked it.
(4)Mike D.
The fried brownie was amazing. The drinks were great; no skimping was done on the alcohol! Wait staff was attentive and friendly. It's a small-plates setup, so you order several menu items and they come out as they're ready. My favorites were the lamb meatballs and the fried brownie--definitely recommended!
(5)debbi d.
Beautiful execution of a great concept. Small bites that are devoured once they arrive. Service was great - spacing perfect. Our favorites were the duck meatballs, mushroom bolognese, and the spareribs. Wonderful honey butter and olive tapenade for the rolls...Cheerful setting - airy - noise level energetic. We will be back to try more. Thank you Jakob and Fernanda! nice job...we wish you continued success and look forward to following you on the Boston restaurant scene.
(5)marjorie m.
Attractive looking place. We had four dishes plus dessert. 4 stars for sure for the fried mussels. The zucchini, duck meatballs, and ribs were only so-so. The cinnamon toast dessert was tasty but - heck - we can make that at home The service was very speedy and pleasant. The staff was so enthusiastic it almost bordered on mania and felt a little rehearsed. This will probably change as they settle in. Anxious to go back and try the rest of the dishes and see how the place develops.

Great place to go for small groups or date night. Fantastic bar and really good food! I'm a huge fried food fan but here, you can have it all because the vegetarian options are amazing. The beets (and I dont really like beets) are ridiculous. They're poached in champagne vinegar with other stuff and tossed in a tarragon vinaigrette. I love lamb and their lamb cazuela was amazing. The fried mussels are great as are the pickles (go spicy). They switch up on burgers. The ones I've had were great and the papas fritas (french fries) are really really good. For dessert, there's a fried brownie which put me over the edge and any ice creams that the chefs make will not let you down - I liked the jalapeño vanilla (sweet and grassy then heat). They have a great drink list (bourbon) as well as really good wines at moderate prices. The vibe can be a little loud (but that's kind of why your there) and temp control (sometimes too hot for me) can be a small issue but this place is just a rockin' good time with an open kitchen where, if you sit at the chef's bar, you get dinner theater. We've been several times and never had a bad meal.. Suggestion, unless you want to take your chances at the bar, make a reservation.
(5)Court D.
Such a cute little restaurant!! The tapas style was great and so were the drinks! The waiter was awesome and made sure to ask us specifically about any allergies (which we would have forgot to mention!). I would for sure go there again - and plan to soon!
(4)Stephanie H.
We were underwhelmed. The food was ok, not remarkable, yet the prices were outrageous. The ambience was fun and service good, but we won't be going back.
(3)Ashley W.
Comedor was fantastic. I went on a Friday night with 2 of my girlfriends - the place was busy but the manager pulled an extra chair up to the bar so we could all fit. Service was upbeat & fun. All of the food we tried was delicious. It's a great atmosphere.
(5)P F.
Another great meal. Lots of new selections. Waitstaff is attentive and helpful. Chef came over to say hello. A delicious evening.
(5)Sabrina R.
So happy we discovered this new spot in Newton Center. Everything, from the first bite of peppers in honey and cashews to the last nibble of homemade ice cream, was perfection. The open concept kitchen is so much fun -- sit at the bar if you can and watch the pros do their thing. The décor is bright and energizing, modern without being uncomfortably edgy/trendy. The food is all small plates, divided into fish, meat, vegetables and sweets. If you are an adventurous eater, ignore the menu and let your server suggest something. Every bite was delectable. Oh! Treat yourself to a up of fabulous coffee with dessert. We will be back -- SOON!
(5)Debbie W.
Had a fantastic dinner here, with great food, very friendly staff. The only ( and it was minimal) weakness was their cocktail menu. But the tastiness of the food and the variety of options more than made up for it. Plus, they honored our reservation and we didn't have to wait. Our waiter was a hoot and the manager was lots of fun. Can't wait to go back!!
(5)Maria C.
I reviewed Comedor the week it opened and thought it was terrific. I've since eaten there several times and had the best meal ever there last week. The food was just amazing! Super creative pairings perfectly prepared. I love how the menu is ever changing and is inspired by one of the owners Chilean roots while taking advantage of seasonally available items. Some highlights for us last week were the Bay Scallop Empenada and the spicy peppers. The burger of the week was juicy, high quality beef full of flavor and the homemade pistachio cake and ice creams are to die for. The service is super friendly and the cocktails are delicious and creative along with a great beer and wine selection. Our server, Andras was as delightful as he was efficient. This guy is special. You get the idea at Comedor that every person really cares about your dining experience from the chef owners preparing your food in the open kitchen to the servers and bartenders. Having enjoyed some wonderful farm to table restaurants in Newton including Farmstead Table, Sycamore, 51 Lincoln, Waban Kitchen and others, I can tell you with assurance that if you like them you will LOVE Comedor.
(5)El M.
Delicious. Came late just as kitchen was closing. Not only was everyone hospitable, but the food came out at a nice pace and we were never rushed. And oh the food.... I only wish this place was in California (where I live) and not Massachusetts.
(5)R S.
The food was fine, a little too salty and heavy on the flavoring, drowning out (vs. enhancing) the natural flavors. It was an okay meal, but next time we're in the mood for tapas, we'll make the trip into the South End and eat at Toro. This place doesn't hold a candle to it. Finally, the smell of dank mop was pervasive when we sat down. They should clean the restaurant at least a few hours before the dinner seating as we almost left due to the smell. We will not be going back.
(3)Inna H.
love this place, small plates, small place make sure u have a reservation , the bartenders are awesome!!
(5)Jason K.
This place was amazing!!! I loved everything I ate there. Shout out to Jeff our waiter for the evening; he was what really made the evening for us. The sodas are really cool and different. Don't miss the burger or the empanada. The tres leche cake was fantastic! Such a good restaurant! :) :) :)
(5)Lyn P.
Great menu and atmosphere, I personally love the crispy mussels and the heirloom carrot salsa. The mushroom bolognese is my favorite. The staff is friendly and service is great. Will be a regular spot for me. Local form Provincetown
(5)Brett W.
This place was great. Staff was incredibly friendly and took care of their guests. Ended up having the rabbit empanada, pickles, fried brownie bites, and fried mussles. Just out of luck the staff served us an order of pork ribs by accident which tasted very good as well. With 4 beers and all the food the meal came to $63 which was not bad. I would encourage you to make a reservation as the place is busy.
(5)Sammie B.
Fun place ( a little loud) good food! We liked the beets, the mushroom bolognese, the hamburger and fries , and the mushroom hash was delicious . Definitely make a reservation otherwise you can be waiting a while.

Sexy nod verb 1. to raise and lower one's head in approval or understanding of how daaaammmnnnnn fiiiiinnnnnneeeee something is noun 1. the act of nodding one's head to indicate or signal pleasure to the point of ecstasy at something I didn't stop giving the sexy nod throughout brunch at Comedor. I was blown away by how sophisticated and balanced the flavors and textures in the crab johnnycakes. It started out salty and a little crunchy-bready, and then got soft and spicy, and savory again. I'm pretty sure I actually made out with my pistachio donut at one point too. The donut was unexpectedly but delightfully not sweet, but nutty and creamy. Brunch is served tapas style, so I would order 2 plates per person. The patio was lovely to sit in, but the interior also provides a spacious dining ambiance and great art. The modernist ethic is reflected in their food as well-- eggs were cooked sous vide and were very impressive. Great service too! We stayed way past the brunch hour but they kept taking care of my party and seemed happy to do so. They were also super accommodating of food restrictions. I had a lovely experience here! I can't wait to come back.
(5)Joanna V.
Really nice decor and environment (if not a little noisy). Good beer/wine selection (warning: I'm not super picky) and I thought the menu was great. It could use a bit more meat entree options. We had a brand new waiter who was not good at all but did tell us immediately that he was in his third day on the job so we cut him some slack. We'll be back with, hopefully, a more seasoned waiter.

I have been meaning to write this review for quite some time now...So here it goes: We went to Comedor (dinning room in Spanish) a few weeks ago with my wife and my extended family. Here is the skinny on this wonderful new addition to the blossoming dinning scene in Newton. The Good (1-10 scale): -Summer kale + raspberry salad=8 -Bay scallop empanada=9 -Spicy pistachio chicken wings=9.5 -Hanger steak=9 -Beet salad=8.5 The Bad -Lamb anticuchos=7 In all fairness I must disclose that I gave this dish such a low rating simply because I was not exactly aware of what to expect. What do I mean? This dish is perfect for the meat lover who is craving a gamey (I know it's not a real word), organic taste of lamb. Maybe my pallet is not refined enough to appreciate the subtle dichotomy of tastes this dish brings. I was was warned that this lamb sausage is very "taste forward." However, I simply did not enjoy it as much as the next foodie might. It was a bit dry for my taste. For the true lamb lover out there - YOU will love it! The Ugly -The wait for service While the wait staff is GREAT, very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, we had to wait 8 minutes just to get water brought to our table. This is a small price to pay for a scrumptious meal. Yes, the place was busy, but nevertheless there was ostensibly sufficient staff on hand. I am only lamenting about this point in hope that the ownership notices my review and emphasizes the paramount importance of bringing food and water to the table ASAP. -Too many dishes missing from the menu We ordered the Striped Bass. 15 minutes later we were informed that they were all out. Ok, no problem. I can understand that a restaurant that just opened might not have ordered enough fish, or perhaps there was a shortage, or they did not get their whole order delivered. But a few minutes later we were also informed that they were out of the roasted broccoli and mushrooms. This was a disappointment to me. Not the end of the world. I just wondered...if you see that you are getting low on broccoli, why not send somebody to get 10 pounds to the whole foods that is 3 minutes away??? I have never ran a restaurant, but surely you can spare a waiter for 10 minutes and have him/her run over to the store. In conclusion, this place is wonderfully delicious. The minor hiccups will surely be rectified and avoided in the future. I would 100% recommend this cozy establishment. And I will be back! I just really hope they will have the B & B this time. I have dined at restaurants all over the world with prices ranging on both ends of the spectrum. I had a mediocre minestrone soup ($35!!!) at the Burj Al Arab (Dubai). For those that think I am insane, well, it was the cheapest appetizer on the menu. The meal was well over $900 for four people. I have also had the most delectable pad thai ($1) from a street vendor in Bangkok. The point I am trying to make is that this place is not that pricey, as I have read in some reviews. I actually think it's very fair. So go! Eat! Enjoy!
(4)Victoria J.
My mouth was amazed with each bite I had a Comedor. Especially delicious was the tomato and ricotta hot cake! The pairing of sweet and spicy with each dish was unique and I will definitely be back for another visit soon!!

It was 50th birthday party and my extended adult family took me here and I truly enjoyed the experience. I do love a tapas and this was a Chilean take on tapas. The cocktails were extremely well executed and the $10 price while not cheap is pretty much on par for the area. I started with the strawberry basil margarita and moved onto another drink that my friend had made with bitters. When they say small plates, they mean it and if you are with a group you will need to get at least two of each dish. Since it was my birthday, I did not see the bill but I can just imagine it was pricey. We tried a lot of dishes so here goes: Pig ear Nachos - interesting texture and flavors but not my cup of tea Lamb Anticuchos - I do not enjoy lamb but I really liked this dish Spicy pistachio chicken wings - yes, definitely must try Hanger steak - very good and very interesting with strawberries added Beet Salad - wow, I thought this was the best and most flavor dish of the night Papas Fritas - this is basically french fries with cotija cheese. What is not to like about that? Roasted artichokes and mushrooms - Not my favorite vegetable but it was pretty good. We tried all the desserts - Tempura fried brownie, Pisatchio Ricotta cake, and the ice cream of the week (I forget the name but it was orange-y with a habanero finish). Of the three, I enjoyed the ricotta cake but it was small. I agree with some other reviews that it does have a feel like you have stepped into a different world and you will glad of it.

Stepping into Comedor is like entering a restaurant in another city, one that is sophisticated, modern, and a destination. (Nothing personal, Newton!) The people who work there are extremely nice. We were early for our reservation and our coats were taken and we were led to our table immediately. Alex, our waiter, was very friendly and told us a bit about the restaurant and a lot about the food. The tables, lighting, and art are all lovely. I noticed that there is quite a lot of bar seating, great for waiting for a table, eating alone, or watching the chefs work. There is a TV, but we were reassured they only put it on for "important" games. Cute. On to the food! The menu is partly in Spanish, in keeping with the Chilean inspiration for the restaurant. I like a surprise, but our waiter was happy to translate for us. I started with a Manhattan with a hint of fig, garnished with a little fig on a stick. It was so unusual and delicious that I had three over the course of dinner. The meal starts with complementary mini challah rolls with olive tapenade spread or honey butter. I ain't no challah back girl (apologies to Gwen Stefani) and they were delicious. We ordered the shrimp ceviche, which was fresh and delicious. Next came the bay scallop empanadas, which were two to a plate. They are packed in rich, flaky dough and melt in your mouth. The sweet potato buns were really interesting, two little sliders filled with white bean puree, radicchio, and mustard seed salsa. The best item we tried was the sautéed calamares rellenos served with Amarillo black lentils, almond and caviar. The lentils overpowered the caviar taste, but the calamares were delicious and not rubber bandish at all. Our last entree was the carne mechada, served with spaghetti squash, piquillo pepper crema, scallions. Then my husband ordered coffee and I started pitching him on the tempura brownie. The waiter told us they make their own ice cream there, and had a whiskey flavored one that evening. WHAT A CONUNDRUM! We split the tempura brownie, which had incredible dark, melty chocolate and the waiter brought us cute tastes of the ice cream. We really enjoyed our Saturday night date and look forward to our next visit.

Saw Comedor on a Phantom Gourmet rerun, and as usual, I think you can actually pick out the 10% of places PG covers that really are "worth driving to", and this is definitely one. Supposedly Chilean (wife) - New American (husband) fusion. All-around, the wine, cocktails, and dinner were very nice. Creative dishes, but not quite refined enough flavors to reach the next level, so 4/5 stars. My DC happened to be a pescatarian (this is a good place for pesc/veg diners, since 2/3s of the menu is fish and vegetable small plates), so the only meat dish I tried was the crispy pig ear nachos, which was good, but not as good a it sounded, and I probably wouldn't order it again. Scallop empanada, local tuna crude, razor clams with nuts, crispy broccoli & mushrooms, and french fries were all good. My fav was probably the empanada. The buns from Rosenfeld Bagle Company were also delicious, served with room temp honey butter. But the best thing was the weekly changing ice cream special, which this week was salted local cream, which was absolutely killer (we skipped the tempura brownies that everyone recommends). Apparently last week they had chocolate and cheddar ice cream, and I'm still pissed about missing that. An attractive restaurant, with a bit of outside seating, and lots of kitchen/bar counter seats too. Service was excellent (even our 3-days-on-the-job server). The only downsides were it's a bit difficult to park and the restaurant is quite loud. Reservations via Yelp SeatMe.

Awesome dinner last night. Menu changes as they source most, if not all items, locally. Small plates for sharing--we had razor clams, swordfish, lamb meatballs, broccoli rabe and yellow peppers. Each dish was beautifully prepared and the tastes just worked. Definitely would return. Our waiter was excellent.

Great selection of delicious veggie centric dishes and fantastically crafted cocktails I'm a fan of tapas style meals, they're a great opportunity to experience a wide variety of flavors, and those menus are a great demonstration of a chef's ingenuity. In my large party, we ordered half of the dishes in the vegetarian selection. The beet salad was my highlight, great combo of natural sweetness and fresh cilantro and always delicious pistachio. The niños envueltos were a very close second, having very clean flavors and then a nice earthy depth from the subtle portobello slices. My only issue was the papas fritas, which were much too salty for my taste but pleased some others in my party. Also memorable were the breakfast empanadas. Didn't venture into the dessert but I am very intrigued by the pistachio ricotta cake, so I will be back for that. While I only glossed over the wine list, I got a great riesling by the glass for my mum and I spotted another good riesling by the bottle... So thumbs up there. The cocktails, however, were excellent. Beautifully balanced and genuinely delectable, ordered the Bourbon+Cider (can't remember if that's the exact name) and the Love+Fernet (so woodsy and herbal and tasty). I'm finding that the decor of new restaurants is now uniformly: industrial with wood accents, I'm not complaining though. I really like the uncomplicated, open space and natural tones. Finally, hospitality was good, but I don't think our server introduced himself. He was very attentive though, even as the place filled up.

Comedor arrived on the culinary scene in Newton with high hopes. Bringing a burst of South American culture to an upscale neighborhood, the little Chilean spot tries to present its take on tapas through original dishes and unique, foreign flavors. Unfortunately, there's a catch: the price. While Comedor offers good food, it's not consistent enough to justify its steep cost. A few positives jump out. The service at Comedor is great. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable, and the staff is kind, accommodating, and knowledgeable. The food is served in an intimate dining room from an open kitchen, creating a cool, lively vibe. Food-wise, a few tapas are sure to impress, like the beet salad, the lamb skewers, and the pork meatballs. These dishes are fresh, popping with delicious spices and Chilean flare (lots of cilantro and lime). In fact, they're so tasty, you wish they were bigger. And this remains a sticking point throughout the meal. While tapas dishes are traditionally small, Comedo might overdo it. The small plate sizes don't match their hefty price tags. What's more, the rest of the tapas leave your tastebuds hanging (the shrimp ceviche is too plain, and the fish, overcooked). To boot, neither the wine list nor the bar scene are anything to write home about. So, while Comedor's menu has a few gems, it might not be enough. The food takes many risks with flavor, and tries hard to convince you that it's tasty. By the end of meal, it may have worked. However, this uphill climb is sadly and swiftly undone by the amount on the check.

Visited Comedor during a visit to Boston for business. This place serves some great tapas! My friend and I ordered the beat salad, spicy chicken wings, and the burger. The best part was the dessert of deep friend brownies!! Ohhhh man, that was some good dessert!! I really enjoyed my dining experience at Comedor, and I hope to dine here again if/when I visit Boston again.
