I would like to point out the first review I left for The Jewel in the Crown was back in 2012. Since then I have been living in NYC and have tried numerous Indian restaurant that have not, and probably will never surpass The j=Jewel in the Crown You can't beat the wonderful customer service, the half price lunch menu and the absolutely fantastic cooking! My favorites: Chicken Tikka Masala Lamb Saag Aloo Parantha Basil Garlic Naan (specialty!) Other great options: Lamb Rogan Josh Lamb Korma Vegetarian Tikka Masala Vegetarian Samosas Butter Chicken that will melt in your mouth Don't forget a side order of Raita! Also try the taj mahal or flying horse beer and stiff drinks from the bar.

After reading some of the posted reviews i went into the restaurant with high hopes. I was greeted with "What can i do for u?" Id like to sit down and have dinner was my response. The restaurant was about 1/3 full. We waited about 10 minutes before a waiter came over and provided us water and left the menu's. About 10 minutes later we were still waiting for him to return. When he arrived he asked if we had made our selections yet. This wasn't going well at all. We ordered and waited for our food to arrive. The curried mussels looked like a great appetizer. The four mussels arrived in a nice curry sauce. For 10 dollars i think they though they were selling me Oysters. My Tandoori Mixed Grill arrived 15 minutes later and it was cold. It evidently sat in the kitchen forgotten for some time before being brought to the table. The lamb was overcooked and dry. After finishing, we waited another 10 minutes and then i got up and asked the waiter for the check. Five minutes later he was seating a party beside us. I looked at him and requested the check once again and this time he brought it. I would have to say that those writing reviews for this place are either family or close friends. The food is mediocre at best. The service was poor. Perhaps Sunday evenings is a night off for regular staff? Visit at your own risk

I absolutely LOVE this place. At a lot of the Indian restaurants I've tried, I find that many of the dishes taste the same. Here, that is not the case. Everything has its own flavor, and everything is very fresh tasting. Servers are very pleasant as well. My favorites are the vegetarian thali and the chicken tikka masala...garlic naan is also a big hit with my family.

Unexpected tasty dishes! Start with the mixed appetizers, get a bread basket and then start on the dishes -- fish masala (with haddock), biriyani, and the special chicken sizzling (like a tikka masala sauce served on the side). Don't forget a dosa! Masala dosa. And a glass of Chenin Blanc. Atmosphere could use a little love, but overall clean, friendly service and good prices.

Bad service. Was a slow night and waiter didn't check on us once. Garlic naan was dry and not fully cooked. There were lumps of raw dough. Lamb curry was dry and bland and I couldn't cut the meat with a knife let alone chew it. I told server and he said its supposed to be like that. Seriously??? The curry tasted only of tomatoes and no other spices. Rice was dry and almost chipped my tooth. Water tastes gross straight from tap and had a weird smell Location is good in downtown. But that all it has going for it.

Don't bother going here if you're young, they will treat you like crap. I went in hoping for good Indian food, and it was. When we had left overs they brought us containers and a bag and just dropped them at our table. I thought it was pretty, standard until the normally adult-aged couple next to us has their left over nearly packed and bagged by the SAME waiter that just dropped empty containers at our table. I will NEVER come here again. If you feel the need to discriminate, all I can hope for you is bankruptcy and unemployment.

One of my favorites in town. The staff is very pleasant and helpful. The food is excellent. We have been eating here and getting take out for years. Service is usually good but sometimes can be a bit sub-par. Food is always good quality The amount of spice is just right (can get food mild, medium, or hot). Even my Indian friends find the food very good. Variety of menu items from lamb to chicken to veggie favorites.

Great service, awesome meal! I had chicken saag and my partner had saag paneer. Both were delicious (they're almost the same thing anyway!) They have an extensive naan menu. We opted for the basil-garlic. Very good! Too bad we just found this gem because we're moving to Seattle soon. I imagine we'd frequent this place often!

I have been here twice, once for lunch and recently for dinner before a play at the Firehouse. Both occasions the food was well prepared, interestingly spiced and plentiful. Service was warm and welcoming, if a bit on the quirky side, but in a pleasant way. We were never sure what the junior waiter was saying, although he certainly wasn't shy about it. And when we noted to the host that we had received two different versions of the daily specials he just agreed with us and said that one was more accurate than the other. Hmmm. Naan was hot, appetizers and entrees tasty, even the raita was top notch. And they had a nice selection of wine by the glass, which you don't always find in Indian restaurants. I wouldn't hestitate to dine at the Jewel again anytime I was hungry in Newburyport..

Went here Friday night for Valentines day, was really looking forward to trying this place with all great reviews.. first of all I am a vegan so love Indian food as lots of options for me! Ordered drinks first and my boyfriend ordered a beer, beforehand he asked about the Indian beers and wanted a nice dark beer as he likes stoughts and hoppy but does not like light beers, so after a lengthy conversation with the waiter he gets a Flying horse, beer not knowing it's Not dark and it's a lager, which he doesn't like nor ever drink! Bottle is opened already and waiter pours it and we both say this is Not a dark beer and he proceeded to tell us yes itbis n alcohol content is higher than other beers, no it's 4% per bottle, we ask for different beer but No they won't exchange it even though it was waiter whom said yes dark beer! So he drank a little less than a quarter of the bottle as it was also rancid as exp date was 11/13!! Really? So we decide ok let's just order our apps and me again being vegan and asking about the Veggie sampler app is told no meat and good choice for me, app comes out and it is the Meat app sampler!!! I took something that was chicken on my plate not knowing till I cut it open and my boyfriend states that is not veggies that is chicken called waiter back over and get blank stare as to why we have issues with Wrong app given to us! He says and I quote "what do you want me to do about it"!!! Uhmmm really?? We ordered 1 thing and it wasn't what we ordered! It had a veggie somosa on it and a potato pancake so he says it has 2 veggies on it!!! It Wasn't What We Ordered!! So we decide to just keep it as we are Not going to get our original order we can see so I ate the 2 veggie items that actually were not even flavorful! We decided to not order dinner and head over to another place if we can as we new 1. We would Not get what we ordered 2. Food wasn't even good 3. We were disgusted with lack of service in getting our order wrong and not even correcting it! To top it off they then change bill to reflect the meat app We Did Not Order n had audacity to charge the 2 bucks more for something we Never wanted to begin with nor offered to take off bill or half price! We didn't even finish it as I couldn't eat anything but 2 things on it and we were disgusted by the lack of service and just wanted to leave! So I would Never go back to this place but instead go to the other Indian place not too far from this one! WORST Service, food and Experience I have ever had in any restaurant hands down! If you want decent Indian in Newburyport Don't go here try Mr. India instead! Wish we had actually gone there instead of trying a new place! Never got our dinner as most places were filled up we tried! I would give No stars if I could!

We enjoyed this place very much - we had the tandoori chicken, which was moist and very flavorful. Also had the honey ginger chicken special, which was also wonderful. Service was great and we enjoyed this authentic cuisine very much!

Loved this place! Great Indian food. Very nice service, friendly and quick. They brought out the food with a small flame underneath it to keep it hot while you eat, very nice. I ordered Baingan Bharta, Kabuli Channa, Garlic naan, and Mango Lassi and all were delicious. Wish this place was closer to my house so I could go there more often

I had an excellent experience here for lunch on a weekday. I usually get take out and have always been impressed with the food, however, the service when dining in was also superior to most restaurants even in Boston during lunch time. The food was perfect and well presented. It came out in perfect timing throughout the lunch. The servers were extremely friendly, attentive and inviting. I enjoyed the minimal but pleasant decor and lack of televisions. The music was nice and perfectly in the background. I had the Chicken Tikka Masala lunch special which was a great value and plenty of food. I also had Vegetable Pakora and an order of Naan. I was shocked the bill was so low! It was a filling, excellent quality meal at fast food prices. I've had many of the dinner sized portions for take out and have always been pleased by this restaurant. I've never been disappointed by the food. I usually have leftovers with the dinner portions, especially with an appetizer and Naan. I highly recommend this restaurant if you get a craving for Indian cuisine and you're in the area.

I've either had a great experience here or an absolutely terrible one. It changes with the wind. My first time in was great. The staff is always friendly and it's tucked away off the main drag and quiet inside. No blaring TV's or music make it a great date or hangout spot. The food was very good The muligatawny and crown mixed appetizers are a great way to sample or start your meal. Keema and chicken curries were favorite entrees. My last trip in with a group of 5, we were essentially thrown into a very tight corner table and forgotten about during a Saturday night dinner service. We waited for the waiter to take out order for 15 minutes and the food took almost 70 minutes to come out during which time we had to go find the waiter to even refill our water. The food was terrible. Between the 5 in our party we had overcooked lamb, undercooked chicken tandoori, a few mixed tandoori grills where some things were overcooked and others undercooked, obviously having been not cooked together. No apologies were given, they didn't even ask how the food was at any point after it was brought and we again had to chase down the check at the end. One bad service can certainly ruin a place for a customer and the last time there was so bad that's exactly what happened. I will be going to Mr. India from now on (you should too) as it's better food and even a bit more affordable. There are far too many other quality restaurants in Newburyport to recommend this place to anyone or to bother coming back myself.

I LOVE Jewel in the crown. Everything I get always tastes super fresh, authentic, and simply amazing. I had never had Indian food before eating here, and this place got me hooked. Onion naan- DELICIOUS, the veggie ball dish with the velvet sauce-- MOST EPIC THING EVER.

  • Mama Z.

If there were no stars on Yelp! I would rate it just that. This restaurant was by far one of the worst food experiences I have ever incurred. Dirty ripped pillows on the banquettes, uncovered chutneys sitting out on the table, raw chicken, over cooked tandoori shrimp (with cheese on it), old stuck together basmati rice. I was so beyond sad and disappointed with this experience. It was an expensive mistake.

  • Tamra T.

My husband and I try to eat here at least once a week for lunch. Typically I have the Palak Paneer with garlic naan and my husband has the Chicken Saag with onion naan. We always get a table right away and the same wait staff is there happy to see us. The portions are excellent... you will not walk away hungry and the flavoring is just right. I always enjoy having lunch here.

  • Paige B.

Food was excellent, the waitstaff was friendly, and the atmosphere was great. A little expensive but good for downtown Newburyport. Plus I was so full after and had left overs to take home! I just wish it was spicier because our waiter didn't believe that we wanted it medium spicy. Still delicious regardless. I had garlic naan, veggie samosas, lamb tikka masala, and Indian beer (flying horse, maybe?).

  • Jason S.

By far the best. They are open late and have a full bar. The food is homemade Indian food. Chicken tiki Marsala is insanely good.

So happy moving from Salem to Newburyport and still having a gem of an Indian restaurant as my go to. I love my lamb saag and Jewel in the crown does an amazing job. The basil garlic naan is also top notch. Looking forward to many date nights as a new resident of Newburyport!

    (5)
  • Chad F.

The food here is very good. My wife and I ordered several menu items to bring an Indian buffet home, and we were not disappointed. They have quite a selection, and their naan is to die for. I especially enjoyed the coconut soup, and a mango lassi to chill out at the end. The staff was very nice to us, and the host remembered us from previous visits (frequent drive-by lassi)

Recommended. A solid Indian offering. The full range of offerings from tandoori to curries. Dishes are on the small side, but I prefer that yo having too much to eat or bringing leftovers home. A bonus here is the beautiful serving dishes and warming bowls. You also get a hot towel for cleanup after the meal! You can order any dish mild to hot, so you can tailor the spiciness to your liking. A big plus for those in a group that don't share the same affinity for fire! Lots of seating, never had to wait for a table. If you can sit in the glass atrium tables, they are my favorite.

  • Nicole W.

The staff here are great! I ordered the mango martini that I heard rave reviews about and it was as expected! I got a chicken special and the appetizer of curry mussels....everything was so good and I even got mango ice cream for dessert. Obviously a place that great will have the phone ringing give them a break jeez....

Not bad. Some things were delicious like the korma curry and the coconut chutney. Unfortunately the chicken in the curry was really dry and the dosa was a little burnt. Friendly staff.

Really really good, solid Indian food. Extensive menu. Excellent garlic naan. I know it's an "entry-level" Indian dish but man do I love my saag paneer/palak paneer, and theirs was delicious. The fiancé and I had been craving Indian after a long period without (hard to find good Indian in Massachusetts!), and we were not disappointed with the offerings here. Would definitely go back if we were in the area.

Staff was great, food was great. I enjoyed the atmosphere, we got the lamb vindaloo, aloo tikki and the chicken tikki masala. as well as the curried mussels. Everything was excellent and you could tailor it to the spice you like. They were also very very good with gluten free and making sure everything was gluten free and also making sure she didn't have any other allergies. Turns out most of what they have is gluten free. The only constructive criticism I could even say about the place is that they should advertise that they are gluten free and maybe join Find me Gluten Free (a yelp like app used for gluten intolerant and celiacs.) Some (less cultured Americans) don't realize that a ton of ethnic food is gluten free naturally and they just pass stuff over if they don't see "Gluten free" on the site. We assumed it probably was since most Hispanic, Indian, Thai/Japanese cuisine is almost completely gluten free or can be made that way if you ask. I would recommend this place, especially if you are in Newburyport on a weekend and everywhere has a 30-40 minute wait on the main drag. They are off the drag and tucked away right next door to a Sushi Place too. So from now on we are going to resist Not your Average Joes/The Grog and remember these places are better AND you'll be able to eat in peace.

Let me preface this by saying that I'm not an expert on Indian food; however, this review is primarily about an experience, not the food. I will say that I've always been really happy with everything I've eaten here. So, the real reason I wanted to write a review was this - A freezing winter night... I'm home alone for the weekend... sick... and I decide that a full Indian spread is just what the doctor ordered. I order a ridiculous amount of food for one person and head out into the night. I pull over for gas and my car DIES. I walk home. I call Jewel in the Crown to tell them that I have no way of getting my food. I tear up a little. My food! But wait, what? The manager is on the phone? And OFFERING TO COME AND BRING ME MY FOOD????? For Free??? They do not offer delivery. This is just a man caring enough to drive my dinner over. I heart you. Now THAT is service. And the chicken masala was great - tender and deep in flavor. Thanks.

Jewel in the Crown is my 2nd favorite Indian place in Newburyport. While there are only 2 Indian spots this doesn't mean I think poorly of Jewel in the Crown. This is a pretty good spot with wonderful service and a classier atmosphere than Mr. India. I think Mr. India is superior in menu options and overall taste. However, Jewel is right in downtown and is a favorite of my best friend so I end up here more often than Mr. India. You should not be disappointed here just remember if you don't mind a dumpier space you can get better food for a couple bucks less per person. Pass

Who knew that you can get excellent ethnic food in Newburyport? We've been looking for a good Indian restaurant in the North Shore for the past five years, but have been largely out of luck. We've tried Passage to India, Anmol, and even out at Madras Grill in Chelmsford. We didn't even know about this place. So, much to our surprise when looking for a bite after a whale watch in Newburyport on a Saturday, this place comes up in Yelp. Needless to say, we gave it a try... The restaurant itself is clean and neat, and the bathrooms are also very clean. The air quality was also good, and not stuffy. When we went (Saturday about 2 PM), the restaurant was nearly empty, which always causes some concern, but those fears disappeared quickly. The wait staff was professional and nice, and even helped with some suggestions for my wife. The food came out reasonable quickly and hot/crispy. I had the lamb vindaloo, and it was extremely flavorful, if not as spicy as I would have liked (I did request it very spicy). My wife got the Dal Makhani, which was creamy and delicious. We got both garlic nan (AWESOME!, very garlicky), as well as the aloo naan (kind of forgettable, but this dish always is!). Portions were all very reasonable. We also got the vegetarian appetizer combo, which was very good (especially the aloo tikki), although not as big as we would have liked. Nevertheless, plenty of leftovers for home, and the staff even gave us a mango lassi on the house (always good). Definitely will be a staple from now on. Prices EXTREMELY reasonable to boot...

Came here over the weekend for lunch, and was rather rudely told there was no lunch specials that day. I ordered lamb Korma, and the sauce was tasteless, although the lamb chunks were nice and cooked good. My wife got Chicken paneer, and it was on the flavorless side as well. The staff seemed to be like the food, no personality, even when trying to talk to them. Place was nice and they did have a good selection of Indian beers. I'll give them another try.

There aren't many restaurants in the area that specialize in Indian food. Here the food is quite good. The restaurant itself can be noisy so we usually sit at the bar which is very spacious and has a large tv. The staff here is always friendly and the service is good. I come here often and have never had a bad experience.

Initially excited to dine here based on the great reviews but were incredibly disappointed...we had dinner here on a Sunday evening and while we were seated promptly, everything went downhill from there. For starters, once we were sat it was 15 minutes before anyone came to take our drink order. The menus had two different wine lists; it was unclear which was correct. Ordered from one and the waiter seemed confused and it wasn't until WE mentioned the two different wine lists that he was able to tell us which was the right one. (Mind you, the correct list was a sloppy printout that looked like it got jammed in the printer and no one bothered to reprint.) Because it took so long for them to take our drink order we were also ready to order dinner but the waiter was so distracted by a ringing phone and people coming in the door, he wasn't even bothering to listen. We literally asked him to pay attention and then he still got our order wrong. They brought out an extra dish that we didn't order and rather than apologize for the error, tried to put it on the table and serve it as if we made the mistake! The only positive thing, the food was really tasty. We had Mango Chicken and Lamb Tikka Masala. We finished our meals and had just started to relax, finishing our bottle of wine, when the lights were suddenly turned up from dim dinner setting to extremely bright. We were confused because generally when the lights go up it means the restaurant is closing but according to the website it was two hours until closing time. It turns out that there was a server that register who needed to tally his receipts and there wasn't enough lighting for him. So without any regard for the guests whose lights are connected to the host area lights, turned them up to the brightest setting possible. They were so bright they actually gave me a headache and I had to ask that they be dimmed again. Of course the lights weren't dimmed, we paid, and left. Also something to note, this wasn't just our experience. We heard complaints from other guests asking the same server to be more attentive.

Jewel in the Crown is well-worth patronizing time and again. 1. LOCATION - 4 Stars - Great location In the downtown center of Newburyport, down an alley in an old converted brick building. It's a bit hard to find, so look for the A-type folded sign sitting on the pavement out front on Pleasant Street. 2. PARKING - 5 Stars - There's free on-street parking, as well as inexpensive paid Municipal parking adjacent to the restaurant and other downtown Newburyport shops. 3. DÉCOR - 3.5 Stars - Definitely a clean, open space, but a bit boring. The pictures hanging on the walls are too sparse, although they still look reasonably nice. 4. FOOD - 4.5 Stars - See below for individual reviews. A. The Boneless Chicken Tikka (5 stars; $13.95 @ dinner) in a Tomato/Cream sauce served on the side was truly outstanding and something I can't wait to order again very soon. B. The Chicken Curry (4 stars; $12.95 @ dinner) was very good. C. The Vegetable Pakoras (3.5 stars; $4.95) tasted OK, but were dry. Dabbing on some sweet Tamarind Sauce helped. D. The Kashmire Naan (5 stars; $3.95) with cashews, coconut, and a hint of golden raisins was fabulous whether eaten with dinner or as a desert. More please. 5. DRINKS - 4 stars - The wine selection is reasonably priced and relatively extensive. i think they have a full bar. 6. SERVICE - 4.5 stars - Particularly attentive service, although the nice Eastern Indian server could have spoken somewhat better English to guide us better in our food choices. 7. VALUE - 4.5 stars 8. OVERALL RATING - 4.25 stars

My favorite Indian food ever! I have been to London which is known for their Indian food and Jewel in the Crown is right up there! I love the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Vegetable Tikka Masala the most! Other great dishes are the Butter Chicken, all of the Biryanis, and I love the breads too! For a nice appetizer I would suggest the Vegetable Pakoras, nice and crispy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside! Yum!

Whenever in Newburyport, I always end up at The Jewel In The Crown. There are many Indian restaurants on the North Shore and this one is one of the best, and for good reason. The top three things about Jewel In The Crown for me are: 1. The staff are unbelievably friendly. Hard to duplicate this level of service and overall kindness. 2. The food. Their sauces are fresh and taste phenomenal. The Naan is great with seemingly endless flavor choices. 3. Prices - Particularly their lunch menu is a great value with several choices in the range of $6.50 and up. Highly recommend.

Very good food! My girlfriend and I were in town, and wanted a cheap lunch, without slumming it; Yelp reviews sent us here. This will be a simple review, fit for a simple lunch: We both got Saag Paneer (home-made cheese in spinach sauce), and split a Aloo Nann (bread stuffed with mashed potato). The portions were large enough that we couldn't even get a lassi to wash it down, and both left stuffed. The Saag Paneer was rich and flavorful, though, the cheese was even more understated than the norm (it is always quite mild); which goes hand and hand with the Naan, also understated. The Naan was quite tender, and the bread aspect had a pleasant flavor, but the spices were mild, and the potato seemed unspiced entirely. We asked for a medium spice level, and felt that we received something more akin to mild (every place has their own scale, no fault here). I don't want to imply that we were unsatisfied. Everything was fresh and enjoyable, and the staff were friendly and helpful. In a perfect world there just would have been a bit more potency to the flavor. In contrast, however, the minced onion (chutney?), that came with the complementary onion wafers, was the strongest, and best that I have ever tasted (choked a bit, at first).

The food is always fresh and delicious. The sauces are very tasty. There are great Indian crackers and dipping sauce to enjoy while waiting for the meal. I usually order one of he many different kinds of Naan on the menu. The chicken tikka masala is one of my favorites. The restaurant is a little set back on Pleasant St. and is a short walk from the large Green St. parking lot downtown.

Very underwhelmed with our recent dinner for two. Our hopes were high because the yelp reviews were so strong. But while it wasnt horrible, it was a completely blah experience. First off, they got my drink order wrong, which is a minor thing- but who's ever heard of a drinking straw in a martini??? Then our 'vegetable sampler' app was a mix of vegetables and...fried chicken? And the pakoras were meat-filled, too. So much for vegetarian. The rest of the meal was solidly OK but nothing near the 4+ stars we were hoping. We won't be back- there's too much other good food out there in the world.

This is the second time that I've eaten at Jewel and it was just ok. The flavor wasn't the full flavor that I get at some of our favorite Indian restaurants. We got the veggie masala and the aloo ghobi. The veggie masala was too spicy and was just ok. The aloo ghobi was lacking in flavor with the cauliflower being pretty much tasteless. Portion sizes are generous. If I was absolutely craving Indian food and didn't want to make the drive to Bollywood Grill in North Andover I would go there, but I won't be rushing over anytime soon.

We had a lovely meal here yesterday and everything was perfect. Great service and food. I think the prices are very reasonable, we had six beers, an appetizer, bread and two entrees all for under $65.00. The portions were good size and food was delicous, also the bread was amazing! I can't wait to go back!

I absolutely love Jewel in the Crown in Newburyport. They also are the owners of Passage to India in Salem and we must've went there at least once a week for years. Now that we moved here to Newburyport we are so excited to still have an amazing Indian restaurant within walking distance to where we live. It is a must!

We ended up here one Saturday evening when we had decided late in the game to have a bite to eat. The wait at a few popular places was from 45 minutes to more than an hour and we were hungry. We walked in to Jewel in the Crown and were seated right away. The service was great. The food was delicious. Because it is tucked away off of Pleasant Street, it's often overlooked, but it's worth remembering. We will be back.

The staff here are as attentive as anywhere I have ever been. I have never had to wait for anything, and everything is served with a smile. The food is traditional, so you wont find any surprises here. The dining room is very comfortable as well.

OK...I love Indian food. I do agree that Jewel in the Crown is better food than Mr. India, but the atmosphere is lacking. When we dined at Jewel in the Crown, the tablecloth had food stuck to it (disgusting...) and our waters had some sort of food remnants in the glasses. I suggest you locals venture out to the sister restaurant in Salem called Passage to India. So yummy and clean!! There is also a Passage to India location in Porter Square in Cambridge. So, go on and experience it for your myself and leave this place behind!

Best Indian food I have had in a long time. I went here for lunch with a friend last week and was very impressed. The lunch menu prices were very affordable. My Chicken Korma was only $7.50 and it was absolutely delicious. The staff was very friendly and attentive and the atmosphere was cool and comfy. I have nothing negative to say!

As a person who loves Indian food...this leaves much to be desired. I ordered online and thought the location was easy to find. It turns out that the restaurant is not really ON Pleasant Street. When my boyfriend called to ask their exact location, the girl who answered did not really know the location. We finally sit down to eat, and wow...that was a lot of money for little taste. I always have to order Vegetable Samosas and they turned out to have beef in them. Not good for a vegetarian/recently turned pescatarian. The rest of the food was bland including the Fish Vindaloo which was bland as well as too spicy to eat. Portions were normal. We didn't want to finish what we had on our plates. In my boyfriends words..."I hope the dog doesn't die eating this". The leftovers will probably sit in the fridge until it grows a healthy layer of mold.

Phenomenal. Amazing. Wonderful. We had lunch here last Sunday. It was a perfect day. The sun was out, the air was brisk, it was the day after Halloween so there was still an air of festivity to the neighborhood. We were walking around Newburyport doing some random shopping and needed to eat lunch. We passed all kinds of places that looked all right and had cutesy names, and I don't know why we even chose this place, we just did. I usually go for american-diner food when I'm hungry for lunch. But I was sick of always playing it safe and decided to just pick something different just for the hell of it. Now, this place is almost hard to find. It's not along a main road you might be walking down in Newburyport. The entrance is almost tucked away around the corner in the back parking lot of an old turn-of-the-century industrial-looking brick building. It's not well-advertised and we barely saw the sign from where we were walking that there was an Indian restaurant over there. We walked around a bit and decided to go back and try that place. It was the best lunch ever. The entrance is under this giant 1884 brick smokestack. It's weird - it doesn't look like a restaurant should be there. You walk in - lots of exposed brick here - dark purple painted walls - dim lighting - Indian music playing in the background. It actually looked really cool. Sort of an Indian infusion into an old Newburyport shipyard or something. It wasn't busy at all and we were seated immediately. Place setting was nice and the water glasses were this cool stainless steel which I thought was nice for some reason - this place had character - different then other places for sure. They brought us this cracker-bread stuff and 2 dipping sauces. One was spicy, one was sweet. The cracker was wicked salty and really, I didn't care for any of it. Very extreme flavors but - I didn't care 10 minutes later since our food was so amazing. We got 2 lunch specials and a naan. Naan is like a flat bread, for those who don't know. I got a lamb korma and she got a chicken curry. It didn't take long, and we were served the dishes in these little decorative bowls. Very elegant looking. A big bowl of rice with veggies in it, the 2 meat dishes we ordered, and a nice big fresh-baked naan. Everything was PERFECT. I really really really loved the lamb korma. The lamb was so perfectly cooked and that sauce - I wanted to drink it. Over rice it was just so nice. And naan to dip in that sauce - clean your place with it. Awesome. The chicken curry was really sweet - I liked the lamb dish much better. But the chicken was cooked nicely and it was a nice dish too. But that korma - forgetaboutit - just get a heap of that when you go. It was cheap. Naan, 2 dishes, a coke came to like 22 bucks I think. I loved it. That food was just so good. The servers were very polite and nice to talk to - I had complimented them on the food and they talked to us for a bit. I just absolutely adore this place. The atmosphere, the service, the price and the quality of food - nothing can top it. LOVE IT.

I get take out here about once every two weeks. And everything is decent. The curries are the best thing I've had, better than some of the other Indian places I've been too.

As a Brit, I am very particular about my curry. JITC was simply the best Indian I've had since being in the US for over 2 years. It is as good as a very good curry in the UK. Delicious!

The boy turned to Mr. Bummble and said, "Please Sir, May I have some more Garlic Chicken?" "More! More! You wants more?," Mr. Bummble repeated while choking over the very thought of the boy wanting more of this delicious goodness. Alas, the Garlic Chicken was just a special and now the boy and Mr. Bummble just have to wait for the special to return. Let me start by saying that I am not an Indian food fanatic. The woman I married several years ago (also known as my wife), lived in India for a year and half. For many years I fought tooth and nail not to go to an Indian or Thai restaurant. Finally i relented and we went to Mr. India in Newburyport (while still dating - it's amazing we made it to another date really) and boy was that a mistake since it took another three years to get me into an Indian restaurant (this one in Cambridge). Since then I have been to half a dozen Indian places and Jewel In The Crown is the best. I even ordered Indian food for lunch the other day without my wife. She was so proud!

Best indian food we've had in new England, period! Great spot for a date night. Friendly staff. To top it off, very reasonably priced. If you don't like it hot, order mild and not medium. I think this is pretty standard advice for any good indian restaurant.

I LOVE The Jewel in the Crown! This is one of the, if not the, best restaurants in Newburyport. First off, I really like the staff here. They are always very friendly and attentive. The service is fantastic. They make you comfortable and I am happy to be there. When you sit down they promptly serve you complimentary Indian crackers and dipping sauces. The stuff is addictive and delicious. They have a full bar with some Indian beers and martini specials. I have been know to have a Mai Tai or three there. The menu is wonderful. Everything I have ever ordered has been delicious. I especially like their Chicken or Lamb Korma, Chicken Tikka Masala, and the Coconut Basil Chicken. They will adjust the spiciness to your liking. The Kashmire Naan is to die for! It can be eaten as a main course or a dessert. We are usually fighting for the last piece. Simply delicious. The best Indian food I have eaten. The food is always fresh and I love the way they serve the main dishes- in copper bowls with a heating candle underneath. This is a great place for dinner on a cold winter night or a beautiful summer evening. Friendly staff, a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere, and excellent food - I highly recommend the Jewel in the Crown. You will not be disappointed.

As you can see, it's rare that I dole out the 5-star rating, but Jewel in the Crown definitely deserves it. It's hard to make comparisons, since I haven't eaten at any other Indian places in Nb-port, but I'd venture to guess that this is still tops. The food is REALLY good, the prices are right, and the staff are friendly. What's not to love?

I was amazed at the quality of the food here. I frequently dine out and love northern Indian food. This is outstanding. We went for lunch. I had the lunch special of shrimp curry with coconut. The shrimp was succulent and the sauce was spiced wonderfully. The portion size was very good. I also had a delicious mango lassi. Service was quick and efficient. The restaurant was clean and pleasant. Price was very reasonable. An excellent dining experience.

OMG, went back today for the first time since moving away in August and everything was just as I dreamt/remembered/longed for. Seriously, like Hannah says, this is the Best Indian Food Around. Crispy, garlicky naan; hot, moist veggie pakoras; fresh chickpeas in my chana masala cooked just the way I adore; ice cold Kingfisher. If you go to Nbpt, you have to make this a stop.

My fiancee and I went for lunch on a weekend. The place was empty except for another couple. We ordered basil garlic naan, meat samosa, lamb dose and palak paneer. The good: interesting menu and attentive service. Dosa was large and stuffed; very good portion and aesthetically nice. The bad: food was average tasting at best. Very eat-able, but I find it hard to believe this is the #1 restaurant in Newburyport. If you really want to eat Indian food while you're in Newburyport, you will be a-ok here, but I would pass it up next time around.

This is the place for fabulous Indian food north of Boston. The staff is wonderful, courteous, attentive and fast. My husband, son and I are regulars here and they always instantly bring us extra papadam - they know how much we love it... The Kashmir nan is really yummy - layered with coconut and brown sugar...so deiicious. The food is deliciously spiced and not over-sauced like many Indian restaurants tend to do. It's tucked away down a brick alley in downtown Newburyport (off Pleasant St.) so be careful not to miss it. Walk right past the Chinese restaurant (DON'T go there) and head straight to the Jewel of Newburport. Prices are very reasonable too.

While the service can be slow, the food here is the best Indian in Newburyport. I've ordered many times, both take-out(be prepared to wait) and in house(best option). Their food and sauces are rich and delicious - the bread hot and fresh. The staff is always friendly.

My wife and I love Indian food and tried Jewel in the Crown tonight. The food was excellent! I highly recommend trying it out. The service was good, the food was prepared quickly and everything came out together and piping hot. The prices were within our expectations comparable to other Indian restaurants in the North Shore. We will be back.

I ordered take-out last out last night and the food tasted great! The service left something to be desired, I waited an additional 20 to 25 minutes for my food at the restaurant. If it's going to be an hour till my food is out tell me when I order!

I get takeout from Jewel in the Crown probably twice a year. It's always good and ready in 15 minutes. I alternate between Mr. India and Jewel in the Crown when I have Indian food in Newburyport. Jewel in the Crown is a bit more expensive, in a more convenient location, and has a somewhat more upscale atmosphere. The food at either restaurant is good, though (remember, I do takeout here) this restaurant puts their food in reusable containers and that's worth the small extra cost. This restaurant might be the best bet for a first date because of the location and atmosphere. Update 10/30/07: They were open for takeout at just after 4PM yesterday afternoon & Mr. India wasn't. This breaks the tie and I now give them one more star than their competitor..

My friend and I went to see a play last night at the NHS and as it was a Thursday evening and most kitchen's close at 9pm, we were very lucky when we went to the Jewel in the Crown and their kitchen was open until 10pm (we arrived at 9:30pm). We ordered a lot of food, tea, apps, etc...and it was promptly served and all of it, frankly, was very good. The biggest problem was, beginning at 10:10pm, each individual waitstaff came to us to say that they were closing. Literally - we were barely half way through our meal and every 3 minutes (no word of a lie) a different wait person came to the table to tell us that they were closing, ergo you need to leave. They cleared the table as quickly as possible, while we were still eating. We tried to buy some time asking for the check, which they then delivered with their coats on - no kidding! Now I have frequented this restaurant several times but I find it extremely RUDE for them to ask us to leave! If that were the case when we arrived, they should have told us. We spent a lot of money and were interested in having a relaxing meal, not being rushed out because they needed to get home. I work in the industry and I NEVER rush ppl with their meals - it's not polite!

This place has the best Indian food that I have ever had. I loved the serving dishes, very stylish. The location and wait staff combined to give the place a comfy feel. I loved the Mango Chicken dish. I'd go back in a second.

I work in downtown Newburyport and make it a habit to get out every afternoon, walk around, and visit a new restaurant for lunch. Lately, my choices revolve around Chinese and Thai cuisines at Szcechuan Taste, American fusion at the Purple Onion, and traditional soups and salads at Stella's. For lunch, I tend to gravitate around 2 p.m. toward small places with friendly staff, minimal crowds, affordable prices, and amble sunlight for reading. Today, I tried the Jewel in the Crown. I ordered the chicken tikka masala, which was a fusion of diced chicken tandoori and a creamy tomato sauce; and chapati, a thin whole wheat Indian bread-like pita. I passed on drinks, preferring to drink glass after glass of water. I asked for medium spiciness, and the kitchen aimed to please. I'm not a fan of the restaurant's name, which aside from the British connotation, doesn't describe the Indian cuisine to me. When I arrived, I was the sole customer. For this reason, I'm holding out on 5 stars until I can gauge how this eatery fares with a packed lunchtime house.

By far the best Indian restaurant we've been to in the past five years. For the area it should be five stars, but I changed several times between four and five stars only because we've lived in England (where tandoori-takeout is the national cuisine) and husband has spent a lot of time in India. Its possible to get authentic (better) Indian food in parts of London but our experience says that would either be in Mayfair or in small places that are difficult to know about. The food in India varies by region (as it does in Italy or France) and is much more interesting than what is served in most places in the US or the UK. In the end, husband and I agreed on giving Jewell in the Crown five stars because we both agree that it is as good as ANY Indian restaurant we've been to since we moved back to the US. I'd guess that there are better Indian restaurants in the area, but based on more that 15 experiences in the past five years I KNOW that there are a lot worse ones. This is certainly true with everyone we've been to north of Boston so far (still need to check out the newer one in Salem). The food is pretty much the usual tandoori/vindaloo menu with several more unique entrees. Everything we've had has been well prepared and seasoned as we requested. Service is pleasant and helpful. Prices are reasonable. Husband says they could have a larger selection of Indian beers. Note that it is a little to find the entrance which is near the back of a courtyard-type alley off Pleasant street in Newburyport.

This restaurant is nice. It's a little set back from the street, so I guess it doesn't get as much foot traffic as other places downtown. It's never been busy whenever I've been there. The service is always good - they are very attentive with water refills, but I guess that's because there are never more than a few tables eating at a time. The food is very good. The chicken vindaloo almost killed me, it was so spicy!

The Jewel in the Crown is a great restaurant located right in downtown Newburyport. The restaurant itself is very nice--it is large enough that you don't feel you are on top of the next table over, with brick walls and dim lighting. The food is fantastic. I've tried nearly everything on the vegetarian menu and they have yet to disappoint. My favorite is the palak paneer with the paratha bread and a side of vegetable samosas, but you can't really go wrong with anything you order. Their takeout is dependably good. I get takeout once a week, and have have done so since I first ate here 6 months ago. Jewel in the Crown is definitely my favorite restaurant in Newburyport. For Newburyport, this is just about as good as it gets. Consistently tasty food and good portions. The curries are rich and well-spiced (I prefer the chicken dishes, which are more tender than the lamb).

I am thrilled that this place has only improved in the last couple years- it's become consistently delicious and is comparable even to some of my favorite Indian places in Cambridge. My favorite things are: The mango martini- it's really perfect, with fresh mango. The eggplant special- they seem to have this almost regularly and it is just...amazing. The bhindi- also outragously good; some of the best I've had. The wait staff- polite and prompt, but unlike many other Indian places, do not make you feel rushed, at all. The spice level- when you specify hot, it's hot! I'm only not crazy about their malai kofta...veggie balls aren't so good. Maybe this will improve some day. The interior's a bit motel-lobbyish, but somehow it's very pleasant, and it always seems clean no matter how busy they are. Overall- reliably good, fresh-tasting food with great service. It's our favorite Friday night place lately! (now if only we had a good Chinese place in town).

As one who lives in a state where pizza is considered "ethnic," I was really excited to find such a good Indian restaurant within reasonable driving distance. The Jewel in the Crown's Fish Tandoori is the best Indian dish I've ever had. I like spicy and when they something's spicy, they're not messing around. The salmon melted on my tongue. Even my husband, who doesn't like salmon, though it was excellent. The wait staff was friendly and attentive without being intrusive or rushing. I'll definitely be back.

Hardly a well kept secret any longer, Jewel in the crown is one of the the best Indian restaurants in the area. After several visits my opinion has not once wavered. The food is always wonderful and well-presented (a nice change from some of the places ive been more recently), the waitstaff incredibly polite, with a quiet, relaxed atmosphere. The owners have another restaurant on Route 28 in Salem,NH called Kashmir. If you are ever in the area I urge you to check it out, as the food and service are just as good.

Excellent Indian restaurant, one of the best in the greater Boston area. This is much lower key than the well known places in Cambridge but their equal in food quality, and a lot less expensive. We've been there twice so far and have been very impressed both times. They are in a great space as well and the wait staff is competent and nice. Highly recommended.

I've been taking out of the Jewel for three years. Never used the dining room, so take that into consideration. I used to live in Cambridge where those good Indian restaurants an earlier poster wrote about are located. Jewel in the Crown is just as good. We like the (Chicken or Lamb) Vindaloo, Tikka Masala, or Jalfrese (sp?). The Tandoori Mixed Grill is also great if you're counting calories. Food is always ready in less than 20 minutes and the staff is friendly and will try to accomodate your whim.

This is one of my favourite secret Newburyport hangouts. I like to go here with friends or sneak away with a book and find a corner table alone. The food is consistently wonderful. The wait staff are very friendly and always remember me. If I have questions about something or want to try something new, they take their time and answer my inquiries. You would be surprised, but they make a mean cosmopolitan! Yet I must confess, I mostly go for the chai! Don't forget about the mango lassi - super delicious as well! More often than not I get the vegetarian combo plate. Of course I can never remember the name of it but the server always knows what I'm talking about. They are also very good about adjusting the heat to my liking - because sometimes I like it VERY HOT and some times I want a more mild culinary experience. This place has never disappointed me and their bathrooms are always very very clean - bonus!

Best Chicken Tikka Masala ever. Also try the veggie pakora and kashmir naan. All the food here is fantastic. Nice guys too. Lots of parking is a plus in a town where they are afraid to build a garage.
