I have always measured the value of a bed and breakfast not by the pattern of the bedspread or the books in the sitting room, but by the friendly staff that welcome you in to their home as guests. If this is rubric, than the Clark Currier Inn is second-to-none. Bob and his daughter are some of the warmest, friendliest, most inviting and helpful people you will ever meet, not to mention gracious hosts. I recently attended a family reunion for which we rented out the entirety of the Inn. The rooms were warm, comfortable and gorgeous, and the entire house was immaculately kept. Bob was gracious enough to go beyond the call of duty and allow us the use of the space for two dinner parties, including a full-fledged New England Clam Bake, on the property as well. Just steps from the heart of downtown Newburyport and the beach, as well as minutes from Plum Island, the Clark Currier is the perfect place for a weekend getaway, a beach getaway, or a grandiose large-scale gathering.

Before heading to Gloucester for a wedding my wife and I stayed in Newburyport for a couple of days. We always wanted to stay at a B&B there and picked this place based on the Yelp reviews. We've appreciated the cleanness of the place but also how friendly the inn keeper and his staff are. A huge plus was the parking in the back. Something you don't want to miss in this town. The collection of old historical nightgowns at the wall was kind of creepy at first but was simply part of the theme of the Sargent room. The entire house is decorated with a collection of antiques and gives the inn a very special charm. At first it was weird to have no TV in the room but at the end we didn't really spend too much in it anyway. And if we did it was a good opportunity to read a book. I only wished the bed (mattress) wasn't that outdated. I wish I could rate it 5 stars but for that it was just to pricey.

Rooms are beautiful, my daughters were so happy with their room! The house is exquisite and you cannot beat the location. Parking is awful in downtown Newburyport, but if you stay here, you can just park in their lot in the back, and walk everywhere. Very personal service and The nicest owner and we will be back numerous times for sure! - Elana Leanna

There are very few places where the innkeeper still lives within the B&B and takes care of the entire facility on a daily basis, and takes his time to tell guests of the history surrounding the area. I happen to love this kind of stuff and was pleasantly surprised and pleased when our innkeeper proceeded to give us history about the Clark Currier house as he checked us in. My boyfriend and I stayed in the Sargent Room - one of the least expensive rooms in the entire B&B, but also had enough space for the two of us. The room contained a full sized bed and two smaller twin-sized beds (presumably for children), as well as a large bathroom. I wish we had more time to explore the inn itself - we were barely in our room for more than 6 hours each evening (we were in Newburyport for wedding festivities for a good friend). We had a great experience - Bob was a great host and the fact that there were peppermint patties and bottled water available to us each evening added to the charm and comfort at this B&B. I'm looking forward to returning over the summer.

I might have given this B&B a 4 star because we enjoyed our room very much. It had its own entrance and a view of the garden. The bathroom though small was very adequate. Also, the room itself was clean and comfortable. That said, the common areas though lovely, are in need of a good dusting. And the "breakfast " was very substandard for a B&B. We were served raisin bran and canned peaches. There was also an off brand of low fat yogurt, a couple of bacon strips, a lonely sausage, and orange juice and coffee /tea. For the advertised tea, we got just tea, nothing else. All and all, there were clear signs of scrimping and a less than excellent experience.

Note: the rating is based mostly on our customer service experience here. The inn itself: pretty, well maintained, clean, but no shampoo in the bathrooms so be sure to bring your own as we were running to CVS to pick some up. My boyfriend and I were locked out of the inn on the second night of our stay by a guest or someone who deadbolted the back door (to which guests are not given a key). It was after midnight, and we spent over an hour outside banging on the door, calling a number that led to nowhere, and ringing the doorbell. A sleepy guest finally let us in at about 1:30 in the morning (this is AFTER we drove to the sister inn, the compass rose, and after contemplating driving back to Boston at 1:30 in the morning) Left a message on the voicemail and no one even returned our call to make sure we were able to get into the Inn ok at the end of the night or to apologize the next day. To make matters worse, when I addressed the issue with the innkeeper the next morning (starting the conversation by indicating that I knew it wasn't her fault this happened), she proceeded to make us feel like the whole ordeal was a result of our own doing. There is an emergency number (different to the number listed outside and on the website) placed on a tiny laminated piece of paper in the guest room that they "expect guests to take a picture of on their phones." 1. this is absolutely ridiculous 2. emergency numbers should be posted somewhere accessible 3. there should be a note telling people not to turn the deadbolt 4. you don't blame the guest for something that isn't their fault She also complained about her 24/7 job and that she never gets a break. I suggested placing this number somewhere accessible and putting a sign on the door that guests are supposed to enter into at night telling people NOT to turn the deadbolt. How they hadn't thought of this already is beyond me. We ended up getting a night refunded (thankfully) which was the only redeeming quality of this stay on a wedding weekend which essentially ruined the last night of the trip. To make matters worse, my close friend (the bride and her entire family) occupied the entire sister inn, The Compass Rose, and when the innkeeper was over there after our conversation she proceeded to say that I was nasty to her (which wasn't the case). She also complained to them about basically "working for free" the whole weekend and I'm not sure why she feels it's her right to complain to customers about her choice of occupation. Terrible customer service, Innkeeper needs a serious lesson in hospitality. While the Inn is pretty, I would never recommend staying here based on the treatment we received due to something that was in no way our fault and due to a lack of foresight on the owner and innkeeper's part. Although we were refunded the second night's stay, the whole experience was ruined overall by the innkeeper's attitude problem.

Beautiful B&B in the heart of town. Rooms reflect a gentle period in American history. Our room was clean and comfortable with a romantic 4 post bed. Inn has many rooms for reading or visiting with other guests. Innkeepers were Friendly and obviously enjoy their work Will stay again

Really nice place. Stayed in Marquand room. Had our own deck with our own entrance. Caitlyn, our host, was friendly and helpful. Walking distance to everything in Newburyport and the breakfast was great (blueberry lemon muffins. Do it!). Highly recommend this place.
