I give this place 3.5 stars. I would sum up my experience by saying that I wish I had entrees before appetizers because the entrees were disappointing, and the appetizers were in fact the center piece. Here is the food we requested: first, bread; second, appetizers: crispy calamari and warm goat cheese salad with vinaigrette; third, entrees: pan seared chicken and the salmon atop cous cous special. I'll start with what I did not like about the entrees. I think the chef tried to be creative with some classic food options. Unfortunately, this risk took a wrong turn. The pan seared chicken was liquefied with sauce, a creamy and sweet sauce that tasted remarkably similar to thousand island dressing. Yes sweet. It absolutely ruined the flavor of a pan seared chicken, in which much of the flavor is classically naturally derived from the skin and fat. The sweet cream not only masked the taste of the chicken, but drowned the chicken in its quest to conquer. It was so drenched that the chicken no longer seemed pan seared, but instead, boiled. It was the incongruity of the sweet flavor with something that was suppose to be savory that through me off. I understand there are instances in which sweet and chicken work very well together, but this was just a case of attempting to put out fire with oxygen; it just doesn't work. The salmon entree, an improvement. I like that it was wild caught and that it tasted clean with minimal seasoning/flavoring. Perfectly cooked, though I wish the skin was a little crispier. It came with a tempura tomato that was also perfectly fried. Biting through it was such a scrumptious mouth-watering experience. But all of this was accompanied by....yet....another.....sweet creamy thousand island dressing like dressing that drenched the cous cous. I only new this to be the case, because I couldn't stand the sweetness of my chicken and switched my entree with my friend's salmon entree, only to find that it too had gone sour, or should I say sweet? I question the generous use of of the sugar bowl and was hoping hard that it was a simple case of chefs confusing sugar for salt. I asked the waitress whether the use of this thousand island tasting sauce was deliberate. And indeed it was. Maybe people like their entrees slathered with sweet cream sauce., but for me it was unbearable. I could see this as a southern type of meal (only it wasn't a southern themed restaurant), but even then, the flavors just didn't work together to complement one another. When we commented that the entrees were too sweet for us, there was not even a simple apology or offer to send us something different (granted we were the last customers, so we wouldn't expect them to wait an addition hour for another set of dishes). Now the appetizers. They were classic items done correctly! Crispy calamari. It's so hard to make it just the right texture of crisp. Crispy, but not over battered. Brittle but not fragile. I wasn't a fan of the aioli sauce that came with it (seeing a pattern of sauce issues?). The sauce was simply not necessary. The warm goat cheese salad with vinaigrette was also spectacular. The cheese was somehow fried to the perfect texture. It was warm as per description but did not burn the palate. The sweet vinaigrette balanced the nutty flavor of deep fried goat cheese. This appetizer was a great example of ingredients and textures that go well together. The chefs can learn a lot from something so simple. Now the bread! That was some great garlic infused starter bread! If I haven't emphasized enough, the restaurant doesn't do well with rich sauces; it's not their forte. It's also not a big deal until the sauce seeps in and contaminates the rest of the entree. However, they are excellent at making minor things fantastic, take for example the appetizers, bread, and I forgot, the potatoes that came with my chicken. I hate potatoes, but how did they make them so well? Only the skin of the potato was superbly thinly crispy, and the core was a blissful memory. As a newish place, the chefs can learn from appropriate complement of flavors. At this point they are halfway through learning that less is precisely more.

We had brunch here and it was very good. The smoked haddock was amazing and my whole family wanted to steal it from my plate. Everyone liked their food. I am only taking off a star because the server was a bit slow and the outside patio is cramped. But otherwise - this is a really genuinely good place.

Went there with my family the other night. We didn't know what to expect but we were in for a surprise! This unassuming place really knows how to prepare food. My three children have very individual tastes and each of theirs were satisfied. My younger son had the burger but insisted on trying everyone's dinner! And he was wowed! My other son ordered the chicken dinner and loved it. My husband ordered the steak and I was a little skeptical because you have to take a chance ordering a steak at a "non-steak" place. He loved it and so did my son who on trying everyone's dinner declared it the best of all the dishes. Both my daughter and I ordered the fish special which was delicious. The service staff was very attentive and cheerful. I can't wait to go back, there were a few dishes I didn't get to try but I'm sure they will be as good as the ones my family enjoyed.

Not very many (or good) breakfast places off season on the island so it was a nice surprise to find Island Kitchen just outside of town (10-15 min walk) serving breakfast. Menu is small but diverse with nice pairings. Order #1: the house special turkey hash with 2 eggs over med. And grilled English muffin. Turkey hash was very flavorful, nice crispness on outside and creamy inside with nice chunks of turkey. Eggs were cooked just right and not greasy. Order #2: Scramble with goat cheese, spinach and smoked salmon scramble was good and not a muddled mess. Flavors were good and ingredients were fresh. Owner/chef was working the line with other cooks and had great command over kitchen and food coming out. Coffee was hot and service was good. Appropriately attentive. Clean restaurant And bathroom. Lunch and dinner menus looked good as well (small, diverse with nice pairings) Overall friendly atmosphere and very good breakfast.

We have been coming to Nantucket for almost 20 years, decided to try Island Kitchen for dinner when we heard that our favorite Nantucket bartender "Selena" is now working there. All of the staff, including Chef Patrick, were friendly and attentive. We sat at the bar where you can watch everyone working hard in the open kitchen. We started with the Peach Cosmos, not overly sweet ( nice job Selena! ) and the steamer clams, clean and very sweet and a Bartlett Farm tomato and cheese salad. For entrees we choose the Lobster dinner, a good sized steamed lobster with corn and roasted potatoes- price $28!! The Striped Bass was a special, prepared with seasonal vegetables and a pesto cream. There was enough left over for dinner the next night! A crisp Sauvignon Blanc and crunchy focaccia bread rounded the meal out perfectly. No room for dessert- this time! So don't overlook this mid island gem, unless you aren't interested in a warm welcoming atmosphere, a satisfying, reasonably priced meal with parking!

We were on-island during restaurant week Fall 2013 and thoroughly enjoyed dinner at some of Nantucket's finest but our personal favorite was Island Kitchen. Lobster-asparagus omelets, Spicy Shrimp Scramble...my mouth is watering just writing this review. Staff was very sweet and attentive, plus the weather was nice enough to take advantage of their tastefully-appointed patio seating. What we valued most about Island Kitchen was their innovative approach to breakfast...not the usual pancakes and omelets. Next trip back you can bet we're starting out our first day at Island Kitchen, just a fifteen minute walk from downtown, by the rotary.

We tried this new restaurant based on the Yelp review. We were so happy with our choice to go there. The menu is very diverse with specials that change all the time. The chef is very creative and he uses locally sourced food. During our week+ on the island, we ate two dinners and one breakfast at Island Kitchen. Every single item that we had was great. For breakfast, there was a BLT on herd focaccia and a blue cheese omelette with apples and bacon. We had different things for dinner that were all great: shrimp appetizers, steak with blue cheese, chicken florentine, wiener schnitzel, fluke and vegetarian. To top it off, the server that we had (Tracy) was great. She is very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. Keep up the great work and we look forward going back next year.
Top notch Nantucket breakfast! Omelets perfectly prepared and eggs Benedict cooked to perfection, along with fresh house biscuits. Juice is freshly squeezed. Excellent service and attention to detail.

My family gets very excited about a good breakfast, and the one we had at the Island Kitchen was fantastic! The cafe is off of the beaten track so that you have to hunt it down a bit, but your efforts will be worth it. I had an asparagus and mushroom omelet, with delicious hash browns and a delightful biscuit. It was the perfect size, not leaving me stuffed but fully satisfied. The rest of my family members equally enjoyed their meals. The interior of the cafe is cheery and nautical, and they had nice music playing in the background. Our server was attentive, helpful, and very polite. With only one day to go on the Island, we will have to choose our last breakfast. I am tempted to head back to the Island Kitchen to sample another option on their menu!

Had breakfast here this morning because I was longing for their classic eggs Benedict. It is perfectly prepared - the eggs are poached just right, the English muffin is tender, but the hollandaise is the star. Absolutely wonderful. My husband had a toasted blueberry muffin, sausage, and yummy looking oatmeal. The service is excellent, but I keep thinking about the hollandaise! Even worth the wait in the summer season.

Second visit to Island Kitchen. I'm definitely a person that loves to return to a place once I hit on a meal that I love. For me, that dish is the spinach and goat cheese scramble. First, let me say that overall the prices here (at least for breakfast) aren't bad. It only seemed slightly higher than you'd get off island. Of course, it's no Bob Evans or Cracker Barrel when it comes to cheap breakfast eats, but it isn't bad for overpriced Nantucket. Their drinks on the other hand are ridiculously overpriced, but I can drink water and be happy. The first time I tried the spinach and goat cheese scramble, I knew I'd be back. Prepare yourself for the party that will happen in your mouth when you have this. You have the option of adding salmon and you best believe I added it! Comes with the choice of home fries, potato pancakes, or beans as well as a bazillion different bread options. I go with the home fries and an English muffin or biscuit. It's almost too much food! I had to tell myself to stop. The goat cheese was sooo creamy and the salmon was beyond delicious. No complaints about this other than I couldn't eat it all. It's not a big place, but it wasn't crowded either time I've gone. Indoor, bar, and outdoor seating with a tv at the bar. The servers are very nice and attentive, and the food comes out fast. I'm definitely a fan of this place and will visit again. Maybe I'll even break my routine and try something different. But then again, maybe not.

I was happy with the food and table service. Unfortunately they don't have a designated host to write down names when you arrive and everyone seemed a bit lost as to who was going to sit and who had to wait. The restaurant is putting extra chairs in the lobby which makes it impossible to stand and wait inside. It was cold when I last went and I felt like I was bothering the staff by standing in the small lobby area where there was also a high amount of traffic. My breakfast came in a timely manner and my veggie scramble and a home made biscuit was perfect. A healthier choice for sit down breakfast with a good menu.

I have been here for dinner twice and to have a place with this quality of food yet not be downtown and paying downtown prices is awesome. Tonight, I arrived when they opened and started with Finnan Haddie with pieces of fresh haddock seared in a pan in the delicious cream sauce that I could have had by the gallon. Talk about old school, it has been years and years since I have seen Finnan Haddie on a restaurant menu. They also have weinerschnizel which is another old school dish that you never see on restaurant menus anymore. For my main entrée, I had a sirloin steak that was seasoned and marinated perfectly with little fat and tender as could be. Sometimes, I'm leery about ordering beef dishes at restaurants because either they are too fatty or chewy, but this was out of this world. The menu said it came with twice baked potatoes, so while I was surprised when it came out with mashed instead, with the bernaise sauce that accompanied the steak, the potatoes were outstanding. I hate too smooth mashed potatoes that tastes like Betty Crocker and these were not. Just enough lumps and thick enough that with the bernaise was heaven in my mouth. The service is outstanding and with tip and drinks the cost was only $54.00, which to some isn't cheap, but on Nantucket, especially for the quality is well worth the price. The only word of warning ( if you want to call it that ), is don't be put off necessarily by the fact that they might not have a huge menu compared to other restaurants in the same pricing range. They had numerous nightly specials where the owners let the chefs show their creativity. Had there not been the finnan haddie, there was a scallop appetizer special that I would have had in a heartbeat. They also had a $15. prime rib special that I bet would have been very good as well. They are a bit hard to find across the street from the mid-island Stop and Shop where the Hen House used to be, but with the numerous phone calls that my waitress was constantly receiving asking for reservations, in the short few months that it has been open, there is a good buzz on the island about this place and I wouldn't hesitate to come back here again and again.
