Very rude service and they made us feel like fools for bringing our child during brunch. Not helpful at all. The food is very average. A highly overrated restaurant.

Great bfast spot on island. Always a wait after 9 am but worth the wait. Pancakes are the bomb as are the egg dishes! Thai scramble sings with flavor and goodness! A must have if on island.

I am a big fan of Black-Eyed Susan's. I think the food is absolutely outstanding and I love the charm/ambiance. One of my top pics for Nantucket and I've been coming to the island for 40 years. What I am NOT a fan of are the people that work there. They need to fire all of the grouchy Eastern European/Russians and the morning hostess, who probably hasn't smiled in 16 years. The lousy people they hire really stand in the way of this place being legendary. For the first time in over 3 years we had an American server this morning and the experience was dramatically different in that he smiled and was incredibly cordial.

Very nice breakfast, if you don't mind waiting in long lines during summer and claustrophobic small space inside. Over-priced like everything on Nantucket, but one of the best breakfast values on the island,

Solid breakfast spot. Notch above traditional diner fare, and the prices reflect this. Kitschy/cozy interior and small so expect a wait. Service was miserable. Waiter, the gentleman with an accent, was cold and criticized orders. Who does that? If I want egg whites, don't tell me I should skip the cheese, ok? If it was dry humor, it was the driest I've ever heard. And based on the rest of his service I'll lean he was just an asshole. Dumped plates with attitude. No refills unless you basically threw your cup at him to get attention. Why go here when plenty of other places exist with less of a wait and better service? Seems to be a local and longtime visitor favorite.

Good food, however, over priced and the help could use some customer service training. Hostess' active and testing bitch face needs work. Lastly, it's a cash only establishment, but there isn't any signage or verbal warning until after you've receive your food and check.

I feel bad writing a bad review about a place that we have such fond memories of but it sure was not a great experience this morning. We expect the lines and expect the cozy/crowded atmosphere and went knowing that is normal. What we did not expect was the dismissive and thoroughly unpleasant service. The waitress bordered on being outright rude and obviously was interested in rushing us in and out as quickly as possible. I was sadly surprised as well the the food was all overlooked, dull and flavorless (do not order the grits). When we commented on it to the waitress she rolled her eyes and walked off and we never saw her again except when she grabbed our cash. The 2nd star is purely because the great memories from years past.

I ordered the B.E.L.T. (Bacon, EGG, lettuce, tomato) WOW! Really different from anything I've had. It was really great! I love a good BLT, and adding egg made it even better. I also tried what my brother ordered, the eggs Benedict, which I'm also usually a fan of. The eggs Benedict was absolutely incredible and it featured the best hollandaise sauce I have ever had, and it had a really thick piece of meat with it, which was really nice. Everything about it was just really nice.

This is a breakfast only review: dinner will be posted later. I love this place!!! Every year when I get to ACk I wake up early get the paper and a latte from the Hub and head to this temple of good. Once you learn how the system of getting your table works you can relax and enjoy your coffee while watching all types of people position and preen for a "good" table - news flash it's hot in the Restuarant but it's all good Soon, and it's always soon, they will call you name from a list and whoosh you're in. Trust the process. Once inside get the tri-fold egg white omelette with mushrooms, onions and green chiles (they are uber fresh). Top the order with a side of Portuguese assuage and spicy black eye peas and enjoy a fantastic day starter! You got my vote!!!!

I had unrealistic high hopes for this place. Even though the Yelp reviews weren't stellar, their website looked promising. My husband and I got there around 10:30am on a Tuesday. There was a line out the door. I gave the hostess my name and she said it would be about 25 min. My husband and I walked around the neighborhood for 18 minutes as I timed it on my phone. We returned and waited along with the rest of the crowd outside. Slowly the crowd dwindled and we finally noticed a group who had arrived after us got seated. My husband went inside to ask the hostess when we would be seated, but before he could let out one word, she told him to go back outside. He was confused as to why she was so rude especially since the restaurant was already half empty, but he proceeded outside anyway. Apparently she skipped us and finally seated us at the counter, not even a table! The place was so hot inside because it was tiny and the stove heated up the place. I asked the waiter for corned beef hash and eggs sunny side up. He asked me how I wanted it cooked. I repeated myself, "Sunny side up." He asked again, "But how do you want it cooked? Medium?" I answered, "I don't understand, I want my eggs sunny side up." Finally I just said, "Whatever is fine." When I got my food it tasted so bland. So bland!!! Not even salt and pepper helped. I had to put ketchup on everything just so it had some kind of taste! I was so unhappy. And to top it all off, this place only takes cash, no credit cards. Ugh.

Hard to write anything positive when hostess told us they were closed while hours said still open. Owner should know the help is more interested in going to the beach. End of summer attitude. This was my last try to bring my business there. Attitude problems.

Good food, cash only, but really rude service. Not sure why they also don't have iced coffee and normal additions like avocado.

Not lunch, closes 1 pm. Opens for dinner. No atmosphere. Dark cuter put front than inside. I salted mine, put butter on the potatoes, put butter on eggs, still not great. Sorry. People didn't seem to thrilled with their Thai and grits either.
The food was good, but sadly the goodness ends there. I agree the hostess is a very poor initial representative for the business, the wait staff though quick at the start, they forget about you once you place the order. A runner brings the food then disappears, forget about any coffee or water refills, it won't happen without your persistence in requesting it. The place is small and busy I understand, but it was uncomfortably hot inside, one way to keep people from staying too long I guess. I might be inclined to return if it was slow but with it being one of the few restaurants open for breakfast, it is likely many other unsuspecting guests will be subjected to this poor experience.

Surly waitress gave 5 seconds to order and stopped filling the "bottomless" cup of coffee rather quickly. Will spend morning coffee money elsewhere.

Not worth the hype, food was basic, service was just ok. Pricey as well which can be expected on the island, but for the quality of the experience, we were disappointed.

Good and basic American breakfast. Tasty overall. I really could have skipped all the attitude from two of the servers (owner?). The first server was taking drink orders when we arrived and when one person in our party couldn't look up because she was handling her baby, the server quickly got annoyed, rolled her eyes and walked away grumbling. Then she was replaced by a guy who would bring out one item at a time even if we asked for all at once, and then have to be reminded that we had asked for the other items. Any new request (a fork or forgotten side-order) had to be handled delicately so as not to ruffle him. Go here if price is your main concern. Left feeling like I wish I'd gone elsewhere.

We were so excited to have breakfast here and the experience was dismal! From the arrogance and dismissive attitude that "greets" you when you put your name in to the unwillingness of the waiter to even pour water for our party of seven, let alone take our order. And when our order was wrong twice, he couldn't be bothered. The staff were anything but friendly and welcoming, leaving us utterly disappointed. Despite all this, the food arrived quickly and was very tasty. The icing on our cake was that he added gratuity to our bill, initially said he didn't and when questioned acknowledged it was added in. We left aghast and won't be returning.

Long waits and a crowded dining atmosphere that made me think I was dining family style with the strangers next to me. Service that was efficient, if not borderline brusque. The food was merely ok. Home made corned beef hash that satisfied the requirement of being food, but was nothing special. Asked for a blueberry pancake, received a regular pancake. In short, if there were more breakfast restaurants nearby, I don't think this place would be as busy as it is. When you're hungry in the morning, even a Ritz cracker can taste pretty delicious.

The Portuguese scramble may be the best breakfast of all time. Sit at the counter and watch the cooks!

i have not experienced the breakfast here, which seems to be what this place is built for. BES has been around for awhile, but apparently the dinner thing is relatively new? anyway there are three seatings a night -- 6pm, 730pm, and 9pm. okay, and here's the other very crucial thing you need to know: NO CREDIT CARDS. yes, that is right. BES is cash or checks only. and with entrees going at $24-28/plate, you will need a wad of cash. but then again, you're in Nantucket, so chances are you already have that. maybe. oh yeah, and it's BYOB, with a $2 corkage fee. anyway, it's an open kitchen, so a lot of people do like to sit at the bar and watch the show. the chef tries to be as seasonal as possible, so the menu changes often. there is always some kind of seafood. the food is really quite fantastic -- full of flavour, interesting taste combinations, delicious apps and desserts too. only complaint is that salads are not so inventive; i experienced one salad as basically a halved head of romaine on a plate. seriously. now there are a lot of reviews here all wound up about the crappy service. i won't lie, the attitude here can be an issue, but i've found a lot of places in Nantucket, especially towards the end of summer, sport attitude. excusable? not really. something to be shocked about? absolutely not. the "gentleman with the accent" who happens to be Estonian, can definitely be an ass, as can be any of the other servers. why the surly/rushed/uncoordinated service seems to be something that BES shrugs about, i don't know. it certainly makes you feel not so charitable when it comes time to pay the bill (with your wad of CASH).

Would never done there again because of the following reasons. 1) awful service; not friendly 2) was not kid friendly; we were told to sit outside on wet benches and a wet table because they did not allow strollers (felt discriminated against) 3) doesn't take credit/debit- who does that?
(1)

Rude staff who seem like they are there because they need the job not want the job. If you're a local, you're treated with all due respect and attention. If you're a visitor, they treat you like you're bothering them. Lame. And the dude at the grill needs to figure out how to fry a stupid egg OVER MEDIUM WITHOUT KILLING IT.

Meh. I've only been once for breakfast the other day. Food was just fine although with all the hype, I may have had too high expectations. I had the Portuguese scramble, which was fine but I wouldn't classify it as delicious. I also had some of my child's pancakes and eggs and they were both rather bland. The service was poor, so two stars off for that. We were there for the tail end of the breakfast rush, the restaurant only had a few tables by the time we ordered. Either the owner or manager served us and he couldn't be bothered to pour out water when we asked for a refill, we were sharing a table with another party who also asked for a refill and he plunked a pitcher in the middle of the table for us all to help ourselves, and there wasn't enough to go around. When we left, none of our tables dishes had been cleared, neither puts or the other party's. I guess our waiter/owner/manager decided to stop trying by that point.

northern hospitality at it's best (or maybe worst). unfortunately, black eyed susan's didn't live up to the hype or me & my friend expectations. to start, the hostess didn't exude a kind spirit and interacted with guests as if they were more a welcomed burden. i've eaten at busy brunch places in boston and nyc where i've encountered hostesses letting people know they appreciate them waiting, don't expect that at black-eyed susans'. once inside (after a 30 minute wait) we ordered our food. my friend ordered an omelet and bacon. the omelet was okay, but the bacon served was the cheap fully cooked microwave bacon. i ordered french toast, which was about as palatable as cardboard with crushed candied pecans on top. when we realized it was "cash only" my friend went to an atm to take cash out. literally within five minutes the hostess asked if i minded waiting outside. that was truly a first, which shocked me and made me feel less than a welcomed diner! in short, sub-par food and an extremely unfriendly hostess. not worth your time, money, or the hype.

Based on a quick scan of the reviews, dinner at Black-Eyed Susan's should have a separate Yelp page from its breakfast (which admittedly I haven't eaten). What is clear is that this tiny boite is serving the finest dinner on Nantucket and stands as a refreshing counterpoint to the typical tourist-traps that dominate the island's dining scene. Instead of the burger/lobster-roll/grilled fish trio that make up the bulk of other restaurant's options, Black-Eyed Susan's provides a expertly executed menu, who's creativity wouldn't be out of place in the east village of Manhattan or the Mission in San Francisco. The restaurant offers three seating (6, 7:30 and 9:30) and the menu runs the culinary gamut from deceptively simple dishes like the Linguini with local clams (a paean to the sea) to a fiery Kai Kaphrao Khai Dao, a perfect stir-fry of chicken, basil and long-beans paired with an unexpected rice omelet all of which seems to have been airlifted from Bangkok onto this sleepy island. The dishes certainly lean Asian thanks to a talented chef who spends his winters in the far east soaking in ideas for the menu (one dish includes fried crickets!). Finish your meal with a wonderful (albeit too small for $12) chocolate pot de creme - though you are still far ahead of the game thanks to the BYOB/$2 corkage fee policy. The eponymous Susan watches over the efficient and pleasant front-of house staff and couldn't be more pleasant, demonstrating both a passion for food and a genuine interest in hospitality that seems missing at too many other island locations. To say Black-Eyed Susan's is the best restaurant on Nantucket (which it is) would be damning with faint praise. Really it stands in a category all its own.

Ick! I was led here after being told there was outdoor seating in the back. Two tables for large parties that the staff is very determined to not have you sit at, doesn't constitute outdoor seating. The unfriendliness at such a small place is off putting. Server with accent was complete ass, I almost walked out. Menu items great for sure as is the fact you can switch out to tofu in your egg scramble. Unfriendliness is appalling.

Again I'll start off by introducing myself as a New York City foody. Nobody will argue that NYC has some of the best restaurants in the country. With that being said Black Eyed Susans served one of the best breakfasts I've had in a long while. The breakfast was so on point that I am now searching for something similar in the city and have had a hard time finding an option. The problem with breakfast is that it is often over thought. I don't want a massive 6 egg omelet with tons of ingredients or a modern version of a deconstructed southern egg sandwich. All of that is a bunch of bs. the best breakfasts are those kept simple, but cooked right. Black Eyed Susans has outstanding staple items, such as their french toast which is to die for. Everything I tried (and I went twice) was basically perfect. FIVE STARS hands down....... sure the service the service blah blah blah. Pull your panties up and get it right. Dining out is about food...sure ambiance counts, but ultimately great food is what we search for am I right? 5 stars.

Great food but can get tiring. Limited menu, and when you come too many times (which we do!) you feel like there aren't too many option. Angel hair with EVOO, basil, tomato is always good. Fish generally great. Once got a steak with large rigatoni and some spicy-ish tomato sauce. Was not a fan of the flavors. Can get hot in restaurant. Squished seating. Whole system for getting in. Modest but with an exclusive vibe.

Very solid breakfast spot, worth an under-30 minute wait. Other yelpers talk about an accented server with an attitude, this is spot on, watch out for him, be terse and quick with communication and you'll be ok. Get a seat at the bar to see the wizard cooks in action. Portuguese scramble is a great choice. Loses a star for the lame hashbrowns, which are precooked shredded potatoes on a baking sheet, and thrown on the grill to reheat. They are served to you in soap bar-sized chunks that lack flavor altogether. This appears to be case of cutting corners in the interest of speed, which they are speedy. I know there's only 2 cooks, but let's see if we can get even semi-custom hashbrowns made? Drink lots of the coffee - it's endless, but $2.50 a cup.

Mediocre food, sullen service, and, in August, very long wait-times for breakfast. I can't understand why this place is a favorite. Nantucket has far better places for breakfast that do not so obviously rest on their laurels. Will never return.

What a wonderful breakfast spot! We discovered it in the middle of an absolute deluge of rain - complete with waterfalls running down the street! Black Eyed Susan's was a refuge and the breakfast foods were wonderful, from the eggs Benedict to the huevos rancheros, we all loved it. It is extremely casual and a chilled-out kind of place.

This is one of the only places in the North to find good grits and hash browns. It is very crowded though and not relaxing. The waiter is cute.

So sorry to say that we're finished with Black Eyed Susan's after 20 years of enjoying their food during our annual visits to Nantucket. This is our first Yelp review and we felt compelled to post it due to the horrible service we were subjected to, not once, but twice, this past week. Dinner on Friday night was ruined by a waitress who never returned to our table after delivering the food, making it impossible for one of our party to send back a salmon dish that was too dry to eat. At the end of the meal one of us took the waitress aside to ask why she paid no attention to us during our meal and was told that she was too busy "and everything is always perfect anyway." She then proceeded to bill us for the poorly prepared meal and argued with us when we requested that it be taken off the bill. Despite our bad experience we decided to return on Sunday for breakfast, hoping that the poor service was a one-time glitch. We were given a table in the outside courtyard and served by the most arrogant, neglectful and insulting waiter it has been our poor fortune to experience. We had to ask him for EVERYTHING and he made it clear that our requests for even the most basic items was a great bother to him. Because we were a party of seven during both visits we were subjected to a 20% tip, automatically added to the bill, denying us of our only means of responding to the totally disappointing service. We have always loved the food at Black Eyed Susan's but the wait staff and management obviously do not place any value on creating a friendly, helpful environment for the dining experience. There are other places that we go where we are treated respectfully and cordially.

I don't know why the dutch pancakes are so fantatic but they are. Something you'll never try anywhere else, so please do yourself a favor and order these. This time I had corned beef hash and scrambled eggs. The hash was a bit soft for my taste but the flavor was spot on. The staff are not all that friendly and you'll have to beg for a refill when they are near closing. The lines and wait are rediculously long if you go during brunch. The noise level is unreasonably high in this tiny joint where the cooking and eating happen in the same tiny space, so if you are noise sensitive, avoid it.

This is my first review ever in Yelp but felt it was necessary because our experience yesterday was really poor. Black Eyed Susan's used to be one of my favorite places for dinner and brunch but starting with last year and again this year the service is horrible and the food is just ok. The waitresses last night were so rude, unfriendly and unprofessional that I definitely won't be going back. I have no idea why I bothered waiting in line and spend good money with so many other Nantucket restaurants to choose from. If you like ok food and waitresses that huff at your presence especially the Scottish one and essentially throw the food down in front of you then this is your place. If not, step off the line and head elsewhere.

It was a quiet Sunday morning so we went out looking for breakfast. Happily found this place! It was very tiny and it was pretty packed, but we were seated right away. I think we happened to miss the rush because it was so early! Service was fast and friendly. I love the wood walls in this place and the counter seating. I got the B.E.L.T- sooooo good! Not overly greasy or salty, just right. My boyfriend got the cheese grits which were fantastic as well. All in all, great place for breakfast.

Got there around 12:30 for brunch and had to wait about a half hour for a table. The place is tiny! They have good food breakfast and are better than your average breakfast join. We had the eggs benedict, pancakes, and Portuguese scramble - all of which were delicious. Compared to some of the other breakfast places (and prices) on Nantucket, this is a great choice. We'll be back!

I look forward to coming here every time I'm in Nantucket! This place is a popular brunch spot but it is worth the wait. I always order the Thai Curry Scramble and it is one of my favorite breakfast meals ever.

Recommended by friends who were also in town for the wedding. We were told that its a pretty busy breakfast joint and to arrive before 9 am to avoid a line. We got their at 8:50 am and sure enough a line was already forming. Luckily, we were a party of two and we were okay sitting at the counter. The joint is pretty small, so the tables were pretty cramped. Though it can get hot at the counter, we definitely had plenty of leg room. The menu was small, but ordered the Vegetarian Scramble with Pesto (included cubed potatoes, broccoli, tomatoes, spinach with a black pepper kick, didn't taste or see any pesto) served with hash browns and toast and Pancakes served with Bacon. Portions were big and filling Overall, the food was okay, not sure its worth all the great reviews, waiting on line and price (dishes plus coffee and tea) totaled $32 plus tip.

I have been visiting Nantucket for many years, and only last year did I finally decide to try this place for breakfast. It was amazing. So this year, we knew we were going to hit this place at least once. We caught the early ferry over to the island, got to the house, unpacked, and went straight to the restaurant! This time we were seated at the counter by the grill, which would be unbearable in the dead of summer because this place is teeny and not air conditioned. Since it hasn't been too hot yet, it was very enjoyable. Delicious corned beef hash and hash brown potatoes. My husband had the eggs benedict, which he thoroughly enjoyed. The last time we were here, we got blueberry pancakes and they were yummy. The staff here has to be the most efficient I have experienced on Nantucket. It is chaotic but these folks make it all work.

If you are visiting Nantucket this is a must have brunch location. Be prepared for a wait. We got lucky with a 15 min wait but it can get up to an hour due to the tiny location. But hey, everyone should be willing to wait for some good grub, and Black-Eyed Susan's does not disappoint. First off it is BYO! So if you want to enjoy mimosas/bellinis/bloody marys be sure to bring your own poison. I got the thai scrambled eggs which were to die for. I have never had anything like it and am already trying to mimic them back home. The curried eggs come with broccoli, potatoes, and cilantro. I could taste a hint of coconut milk/water some thing in there. Very tasty. As a side you MUST get the black-eyed susans. They are stewed and insanely delicious on the side of any breakfast.

I definitely don't understand all the great reviews. The menu was limited, service was poor and the place was cramped. We both ordered the French toast which turned out to be a few pieces of bread on a plate. I would certainly try somewhere else next time.

Decent breakfast but really poor service. We were a group of 7 and the waiter was simply a rude person. We enjoyed the Thai scramble (it was spicy), & cheesy grits were yummy. A friend said the Portuguese scramble was better at Foggy Island. One person liked the huevos rancheros better than Foggy Island (also spicy in a good way), and the French Toast was very sweet, and dry. The scrambled eggs & bacon wasn't that great (didn't look great). The waiter claimed they only had Sourdough toast but the toast we received was not sourdough at all. To ask for anything we just had to essentially yell out at him. He pulled my plate away from me when I still had 2 bites left. Normally someone asks first before you take a plate away. He dumped coffee into our cups without asking if we wanted a refill. The most aggravating part of the entire meal was that he added 20% tax on our bill (this was instantly why we realized he could be a DB without a care), but he added the tip to our bill after our tax and that's really sneaky we thought...it was a $1.30 more than it should have been and we adjusted the bill accordingly..just to make our point. We are all anything but cheap people but a server doesn't get to treat people like crap & get away with it.

LightChick M. should have walked out. I know the waiters and hostess in there and I am sure you were the rude one as they are incredibly kind. It is THEIR business. If they only have outdoor seating for parties of 8 or more (a policy that has existed for the 20+ years I have been going to Black Eyed) then they can do that. Do you get mad when they don't give you the senior citizen discount at the movie when you're 30? Outrageous. There are somethings in life you just can't have immediately.. deal with it. It is the entitled nantucketers that stay away from this gem and good riddance!! Long waits, a unique reservation system, and waiters that don't get on their knees to serve you mighty rich folk are the reason this place stays great. Not to mention the best food on the island. I hope you never change black eyed.

This was a great place to grab breakfast. There was a bit of a wait but their estimated wait of 25 mins was accurate. It is a small place so you are close to the next table but this was not a problem. We enjoyed the omelette and French toast was amazing and the butter and cinnamon walnuts on top was great. I also had the chicken sausage which was excellent but was a little spivey and I wasn't expecting.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day (as well as my favorite) and my breakfast at Black-Eyed Susan's was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. After a short wait (get up early!) we plopped down at the counter and watched the breakfast wizards at work over the grill. I usually eschew white four and butter, but I treated myself to Sourdough French Toast with Orange Jack Daniels Butter and Cinnamon Pecans with a side of turkey sausage. The French Toast was like delicious cake, a perfect compliment to the spicy turkey sausage. I'm going to be doing some time in the gym for this, but it was TOTALLY WORTH IT! Just a note, they don't take credit cards, so bring cash. If you aren't sure if it's worth the wait, I'm kind of drooling writing this.

John D.
Good food, if you can get past the 20+ minute wait. One thing that really turned me off, was that the people cooking the food don't wear plastic gloves. We watched them clean things, pick things up off the floor, and touch the finished food without washing their hands. Not good. When our food was up, I had to flag down the waiter and ask if that was our food that had been sitting next to the griddle for the last few minutes.

I am so tempted to give this place five stars because the meal itself so one of the most amazing dishes I've ever had but I just have to take a star off for the appetizer. Okay so the bad part- the appetizer was not good- I don't remember what it was called but it amounted to 2- 1 inch fried pieces of pork fat served with some sort of pickled green. Yuck. You would think that would warrant more than 1 star off but it doesn't because the salads going by looked amazing so I would order that the next time. Along with the fact that the main course was awesome. I got the Scallops on Lemon Pappardelle and it completely blew me away. The scallops were large and succulent, and there was tons of wild mushrooms, spinach and the most delicious sauce. The portion size was perfect, I ate everything on my plate and was seriously tempted to lick said plate clean. My husband ordered the Smoked Paprika Salmon and again it was perfect. He also ate everything on his plate. Days later I am still thinking of my dish and if we were still on Nantucket I would go back and get it again...this time however I would get a different appetizer! And in case you miss it on the website- cash only!

Came here for dinner back in june while visiting ack. This place was hightly recommended, so we felt we had to try it. As you know, no credit cards and same day reservations--just be prepared. Overall, we wound the food to be creative and fresh. Some things were a bit off and didnt completely work, but overall it was a great change of pace for the island. We would highly recommend it. It only loses a star because the service was quite inattentive and it took 5 askings to get water.

Rarely would anyone go to the length of writing a review when he did not get the chance to actually eat the food, but this situation is one for which it is well warranted. We met some folks yesterday who recommended Black-eyed Susan's so overtly and enthusiastically that we waited in line yesterday afternoon to make reservations for dinner later that evening. We were seated at 9:00. After being asked in a harsh Scottish accent and manner if we knew what we wanted with no other words at all from our server, we ordered at 9:10. We both thought what a brusque person our server was but only later would we learn that she was not only unfriendly but just plain bad at her job. It was only after we had a couple sit next to us 10 minutes later did we become aware that the restaurant had a few off menu specials that evening since our server did not want to bother us with those details. Time ticked bye and the server never came back. The people who were ordered a few minutes before us got their meal and then the people who came in 20 minutes after us got their meal and we were orphaned. At 9:50 I finally was able to make some attention grabbing gestures to get the server to acknowledge our existence. Strange in such a tiny place. I inquired about the status of our meal and she hostilely stated that the cooks are very busy and are working as hard as they can. I explained that I was sure that was true but why was it that all these people around us who had ordered well after we had were at the stage of meal completion or at least mid meal already done and we had not received a morsel of food. I was not rude or loud just inquiring. She huffed off as if I had insulted her by asking and having her acknowledge that I was in fact a patron. 8 minutes later (now 58 minutes after our arrival and 48 minutes after ordering) she came back and asked if we had ordered the tenderloin and the cod and she had the order slip in her hand. Now that's troubling. I replied we had so ordered and then I asked if the order had not yet been given to the kitchen and she stared blankly back. I asked if the meal was actually in process and she replied it would be very shortly. Can you believe this!!!!! At that point I elected to end our misery and leave. I was very glad we had enjoyed gre at service and great wine and excellent cheese at the subterranean wine bar on Broad Street because it was now too late to get dinner elsewhere. Black Eyed Susuans is dumpy in appearance and filled with smoke For dinner. The service was abysmal. Why I wonder do people wait in lines to make reservations. Is this what Nantucket has come to? By the way the woman who took our reservations was nice and friendly. If only she was involved in the service end of the place. Do not go to BlackEyed Susan's.

This was our last dinner on Nantucket and it was also the best. We sat at the bar which is basically the kitchen and it was an awesome show watching these chefs working their magic for the house. Everything we had was amazing and everything we didn't order looked mouth watering too. This was the one place on the island we wish we could go back to A+

Solid corned beef hash. They use New England Grey Corned Beef, and they add some peppery spices. I would characterize it as a "grey flannel" hash. I.e. Similar to the Wildflower Cafe in Duxbury but grey beef rather than red. The sunflower whole grain toast is good as well.

The best place to get breakfast on Nantucket! Always a wait to get a table but so worth it

The islanders said I had to have breakfast here and they were right! Delicious all the way around. I had braced myself for the long wait but we lucked out in that although there was a long line, all the tables turned over at the same time so we got a table within 10 minutes (but heard that is not normal). The restaurant is small, maybe only 10-12 tables with a breakfast bar. I loved that the grill is low and out in the open so you know their food is fresh and their kitchen is clean. We ordered the sourdough french toast with grade A maple syrup, the eggs benedict, and the corned beef hash and another side of santa fe hashbrowns. OMG, we ate all of it and were stuffed to the gills! Everything is fresh, good size portions and creative dishes. I heard dinner is just as great because they let you BYOB!

This place has lost it's touch for a well executed breakfast: poached eggs were hard, Portuguese Scramble was cooked at too high a heat so eggs were granular. Pancakes were ok, but the "to go" box was dirty and soaked through with food grease so we had to leave the leftovers there. Yikes. Waiter refused to service table after the check arrived. Too bad for a place that once cared about its food.

Good solid breakfast. Nothing great. The pancakes were the best thing we tried. I would give it more stars, but the service here (and most of the island) is a bit resentful. Like we visitors are in the way. The waiter couldn't take our order any faster and we were out of their faster than we waited. And hot inside. All in all, a nice solid 3. Would go back off season to see if it's different.

The best breakfast on the island. Had breakfast here several days in a row last visit. Never once disappointed but often hot. Haven't had dinner here in 12 years so can't offer a relevant comment except to say it might be hot and bring your own wine.

I'm not sure the wait was worth it. Our food was good, not great. My french toast was under cooked, but my wife enjoyed her Thai scamble, so the food was a mixed bag. Our waiter wasn't very good, neither friendly nor knowledgeable about his own menu. I'd possibly try it again, but only if the wait was far shorter.

Review is for dinner on 9/4. I started with an outstanding Corn & Coconut Soup and my dining partner and I shared a Cod special, diver Scallops and half plate of linguine and Quahogs. All I can say is all three were fantastic. Black-Eyed Susan's is BYOB and we enjoyed our favorite bottle to go along with a fabulous meal. Service was good and not intrusive. Highly recommended

I feel lucky that when we arrived, the tables were all reserved, so we had to sit at the counter. This gave us perfect viewing of the chefs, and it was so much fun to both watch them cook as well as talk with them about their process. They encouraged us to ask questions. I had blackened bluefish tacos with arugula, avocado puree, peach, run slaw, and salt and vinegar chips (miniscule), adobo spiced halibut with quinoa, and carrot cake with corn shoots. For dessert I had chocolate pot de creme with macaroon and peanut cookies. Everything was top notch!

This small little restaurant is great! Our hostess was really accommodating even though we told her we just wanted some appetizers. She gave us a table by the window and fit us into her packed reservation list. The appetizers were also really delicious. Definitely need to check this place out!

I've been coming to the island for years and tear my way through the local culinary scene every time. This is the absolute best restaurant in almost any category. A great place to bring a date, slightly dressy but still laid back. Want brunch? Grab a stool for an up close view of the line cooks turning out pancakes and the Portuguese scramble. Large groups might not like to sit at the counter, but if there's just a few of you it's the best place to sit. I always request it. It's a great value and BYOB, which is even better. Also, it's strictly cash only and not open in the off-season. They don't take reservations at all for brunch and not until the day of for dinner. So, if you're around during the peak season without anything lined up, this is an especially good option. Stop by at 2 pm to reserve a spot for the first seating and 6 pm for the second seating. Breakfast: Be prepared to wait at peak times, but stick with it. For the longest time I've been stuck in a rut where I order eggs benedict and blueberry pancakes (if you want your blueberries in your pancakes, you have to order them that way). The last time there my boyfriend ordered the Portuguese scramble and I might have to order that from now on. The spicy sausage, veggies, and fluffy eggs were amazing. I always see them making a lot of specialty omelets and French toast, so that's also very popular. They also make pretty decent coffee with bottomless refills. Dinner: My favorite starter is the tuna tartare, a daily special that they don't list on the menu. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night craving it and they've ruined me for eating it anywhere else. On my most recent visit, my step-mother had these cauliflower fritters with whipped truffle honey. If i hadn't had my tartare I might have made a desperate grab for them. A real knock out. For the main, I've had excellent salmon, pasta, and beef. They do everything well and I've never had a disappointing meal. I would recommend that you don't stay for dessert. It's generally a throw-away, something simple like cookies or pot de creme that they make ahead of time. They're not really set up for cakes and souffles. Head down to The Juice Bar and get a sundae instead. Definitely don't miss out on this great spot. The chef told me he's leaving after this season, so I hope the owners find someone to keep up the tradition of great food.

Terrific restaurant and a great BYOB bargain (for Nantucket). Sit at the counter and watch the show. Don't miss the tuna tartare.

I've always loved this place for breakfast. The food is consistently good and, while expensive, I just love the place. Food was as good as I expected on this visit, but the service seemed a bit abrupt. I'd appreciate a little less "Durgin Park" next time and a little more welcoming attitude.

A must visit locale when in Nantucket, Black-Eyed Susan's is truly one of the best breakfast / brunch spots in all of New England. The scrables are unique and delicious (Portuguese and veggie scrambles are to die for....Thai one not as much), and their version of huevos rancheros is as good as you fill find anywhere. The pancakes are equally awesome and their cheese filled one is a must try! Lastly, one of the most unique dishes in the menu is their Santa Fe Hasbrowns. Come with friends and see how quickly these will be devoured...truly sinful! If there is a complain to be had about this place, it is that it is small (yet well run and managed) so be prepared to wait. This is definitely an example of good things come to those who wait!

I am absolutely baffled by the less than 4 star ratings. A lot of them seem to be breakfast or comments on the service so who knows. Went with my wife and my parents for dinner. Just kind of showed up not knowing the score (only three seatings a night and very popular even just out of the main summer season). Still the wonderful hostess from Glasgow got us seats at the bar in about 20 minutes, just enough time to grab a BYOB bottle of wine down the street. Getting seated at the bar was the best thing that could have happened. Watching the chef and sous chef do their work was amazing. I forget the sous chef's name but he took the time to chat with us about the food and things generally. It was extremely nice considering how fast they were working. Our waitress was efficient and friendly as well. I really do not understand the reviews that claim bad service, I have rarely had better service. The food, was phenomenal. No one had a bad dish. I think I won though with an asian inspired beef dish over rice noodles with brocoli rabe. Wonderfully balanced flavors and delicious. Watching it get made just added to the excellence. I would recommend anyone to go here for dinner. The only things to keep in mind is that they seem to be packed all the time, they are BYOB, and they only take cash or check.

I visited Black Eyed Susan's based on the outstanding reviews on Yelp, but after our average breakfast, I found myself wondering why people were glowing so much about this place. Don't get me wrong, the pancake my toddler chowed down on smelled AWESOME. I couldn't try any because I'm gluten free, and though I told our server this and asked to NOT have toast on my plate, they still put it on there. O_O The overall breakfast was ok. I give them props for knowing how to make good bacon, but the black-eyed peas were straight from a can and flavorless and the eggs were just eggs. I seriously make better breakfast at home! Oh, and the service was the suck. We asked for water for our little one, which we got, but apparently we needed to be explicit and ask for water for ourselves too, which we did after realizing we weren't getting any, and had to wait 10 minutes before it appeared at our table. Fail. Sorry Black Eyed Susan's, I'll eat a breakfast burrito at the Green any day over going back to your spot. misterbelly.com

I had to catch a ride in 30 minutes. Told the waitress as we sat down for Sunday late breakfast, asked if it would be a problem. Not at all. Order taken, food delivered, plenty of time to eat and enjoy and even linger a bit. Food was really good, had asian eggs (thai?), different and special.

This was the worst breakfast experience I've ever had. From start to finish. We went there very early in the morning, 20 minutes after opening. If it was extremely busy I would have been more understanding. Firstly: we asked for a booth and could see several open and available. We were not sat at one. Ok fine. No biggie. We wont say anything. Next: I order a breakfast sandwich, Ham & cheese. Easiest thing available. It came out as bacon & cheese. After 15 minutes of being ignored, I was able to flag down the waitress and let her know. She says sorry and they'll correct it. Great! But then she took my plate from me while she went to correct the mistake. Isn't that restaurant etiquette 101? Never take a patrons plate from them after being served? Uumm, I was eating those home fries. Next: my boyfriend ordered some dish that has egg on a tortilla, Among other items. He was not asked how he wanted the eggs prepared and they came out sunny side up in a tortilla. It was the grossest dish I've ever seen. He ate two bites and left hungry. Finally: we finally get our bill, after being ignored for another 15 minutes or so, and with us having to ask for it. The waitress never came back for us again. I had to go up to the counter in order to pay the bill. After paying $13 for a bagel sandwich, I would have expected better service. Bad service, not great food and grossly overpriced. Don't go here. You're better grabbing a muffin and coffee somewhere.

This one is kind of hard. Stopped in for breakfast on a Thursday morning around 9:35 and the line was out the door. (no surprise). We put our name on the list, and were told a half hour, so one of us stayed while the rest popped into some stores. As we came back the hostess asked if we were all here, and my friend said "no", so the hostess was going to pick the next name on the list. My friend then saw us and stopped the hostess. We would have been pissed if she gave our table away; a person with no arms and no legs can cross from one side of the town to the other in under 3 minutes... We ordered breakfast. Huevos Rancheros, sourdough French toast, an omelet, and blueberry pancakes. The Huevos were good, but I couldn't quite figure out the red sauce that was on top... The side of hash browns also had the sauce. Spicy and strange... We sat on the outside patio (an alley between two buildings) which had the odor of stale beer, and the waitress was lacking personality or humor. She must be ready for the tourists to go home... Kind of a weird attitude when you work for tips. Oh ya. This is a cash only restaurant. I should have checked yelp before eating here...! I didn't see a sign in the window, but it's on the menu. Not bad for breakfast, but I'd still chose Fog Island over this place.

Last night in Nantucket - kids and wife at the opening of a new movie.... So I took off and rode my bike looking for a last night dinner in town. Heard this place was great for breakfast. Looked through the window at 9:30 and the place was packed. Spotted one stool at the counter and grabbed it. Holy crap did I make the right decision. The food is incredible out of such a small kitchen. The staff was amazing. Can't wait to go back. It will be a regular stop every summer!

The food at this restaurant was absolutely INCREDIBLE. The seafood portions were a bit small for the price you paid, but we loved the food so much that we came back for breakfast- their breakfast is a real treat. Weary eye on the crowds though- it was very crowded, even when we came for dinner at 9.

Everyone writes and raves about brunch, but I think it is a wonderful dinner spot as well. The seating is prompt & the food comes out quite quickly. The ambiance is casual and low key which is nice and they offer half bottle of wine which was perfect for me and the boyfriend. I ordered the special that day, tuna tartar with scallion pancake and it was DELICIOUS! By the way I was skeptical of how the quality the asian influenced food would be in the food since I'm from new york, but perfection!

This place is ok I supposed. We went for breakfast. Fresh squeezed orange juice was the highlight. Not farm fresh eggs, regular as far as I could tell. I would come again because it's a solid breakfast and lively ambience. But from a foodie standpoint, coffee and pastries are more impressive at Provisions, which is more of a cafe.

Food Ok. Service HORRIBLE. No one exaggerated when warning about poor service. Between the ordering process and putting money was on the table, the waitress didn't give us the time of day. The hostess refilled drinks and additional requests only because we could waive her down. Once money on the table the waitress swooped right in. Never again.

I think this has to be my favorite place for dinner on the island, not just because the food is great, but also because it has a menu that works for bringing the whole family. The menu is varied and has some well thought out, high quality, dishes on it. Yet if your party picky kids (or perhaps adults who act like them) you can also find some simple pasta dishes that are available in half-sizes. I appreciate that it is BYOB and that you don't have to avoid that really nice bottle of wine that you can buy back at home for $15 that ends up on someone else's wine list for $50. Do tip extra for them serving you your own vino, but I didn't have to say that, right? As far as the oddness with reservations goes: For dinner you can reserve in advance for the first (6:00PM) seating of the evening. You can. Call in the afternoon the day of, and I think you can make it days advance as well. Also: The first time I dined here I was disappointed to hear that i could only get seating at the counter when I made my reservation. Now I specifically request counter seating, it is a marvel to see it all done so smoothly if you are into this sort of thing.

We always make a stop at Black-Eyed Susan's while in town. I absolutely love the pasta dishes, and they had one of the best ceasar salads I've ever had (for some reason it sounds weird to say that, but it's true). I'm not sure if BYOB is a problem for some, but for me is great! I just swing by the liquor store on main st, grab a bottle of vino on the cheap and enjoy the low price of dinner. First time I ate there I got caught off guard by the cash only (whoops!) and made a dash to the ATM leaving my wife as collateral (sorry babe). So hit the ATM first people! The reservations are a bit strange, so make sure to call ahead so you understand it. I'm going to catch some flak for this but quiet honestly, the last time we ate here it was much better than Brant Point Grill (which had been great in the past) Anyways, worth a visit!

I suppose this place has been around for forever so the locals and repeat visitors are attached to it. Having tried it for the first time during our recent trip, I think its really only worth an "eh" for all you have to deal with. First is the very unfriendly lady who takes names for the tables. I mean, would being just pleasant kill her? Its brunch after all. The menu and restaurant is like a fancy Waffle House. The food is good for what it is, the service is pretty bad. Essentially impossible to get a server's attention after you have placed your order and been delievered your food. Probably worth it if you happen to go by and the wait is 10 minutes or less. Otherwise, I'd probably pass. FYI, its cash only.

I've taken my sweet fucking time writing this review, because I have utterly fallen in love with this fan-fucking-tastic restaurant. I literally have a raging boner just thinking about their breakfast. Where's Ariel K. when I need her? Let's start with the atmosphere. The place is small, maybe 8 tables, seating 2 a piece, with a back patio seating 8 more. However, those seats blow. The real treat is sitting at the counter, where one can really enjoy a meal. Directly behind the counter is where the magic happens. A stove, a fridge and a griddle, two cooks, and no space make up the kitchen. It really is just so amazing to watch the cooks work together. Their timing and teamwork are just so perfect, its almost like they are two bodies sharing one hive brain. After having had breakfast here seven days in a row, I think I accurately speak on all their dishes. All of which, with coffee, tax and tip, equate to about 15 dollars. Portuguese Scramble - 3 eggs, with linguiça, spinach, tomatoes and garlic, all mixed together on the stove (not on the griddle, which is the only downside to this meal). It comes with Oatmeal toast and a choice of hashbrowns, black-eyed peas or cheese grits (which I'll get to later). I really like this dish because I think the linguiça and garlic and a great mixture of flavors that really compliment each other, and I've always had a thing for tomatoes and spinach. Definitely deserves a repeat, but I sadly never got the chance to get it again. Pennsylvania Dutch Cakes - Out of all the dishes they had, I was most skeptical about this one. I got it on recommendation from one of the waitresses (their service is awesome by the way, I never have to wait on refills of coffee or water). A dutch cake is a pancake but before flipping the pancake, a slice of Jarlsberg swiss cheese is place in the uncooked side. Once flipped (on the griddle) the cheese grills into the cake. Up until the second I took a bite out of the dutch cake I was still skeptical. After one bite, I proceeded to eat around each slice of cheese on each of the three dutch cakes. Why? Because I have never had such a phenomenal and interesting and delicious pancake before that I want to save every awesome bite for the end. Only downside is I was still hungry afterwards : (. Huevos Rancheros - Quite possible my favorite dish, it is a great twist on a classic mexican breakfast. Plated beautifully, this dish is layered with black-eyed peas, then tomatoes, then two eggs any style (I went with Over Easy) a crisp grilled tortilla and then slathered with a spicy tomato-chili sauce. Out of all the meals I had a BES, I ate this one the fastest. From start to finish each bite just utterly explodes with flavors. I could eat this all day every day. French Toast - Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. I don't like french toast. Typically the dish just does not appeal to me. But the sourdough french toast at BES is UNREAL. Covered in cinnamon, powdered sugar and caramelized pecans, are four giant slabs of sourdough bread. Cooked on the griddle to perfection and plated with Jack Daniels orange butter, this dish delights with every bite. Definitely a crowd pleaser and great for kids. Corn Beef Hash and Eggs - If you follow my other reviews, you'd know I am obsessed with corn beef hash. It is easily my favorite breakfast meat (blasphemy I know). Thank God, BES does not disappoint. With enormous chunks of potatoes, and perfectly spiced corn beef, BES has the best CBH I have ever had. Sitting at the counter one can see just how perfectly grilled it is. If the cook left the CBH on the griddle for 5 more seconds on either side it would get burnt. It is just so perfectly crisped I can't even begin to describe it. A++++++++ Sides: Hashbrowns - I like them. I don't love them. Shredded instead of cubed, which I like, the hashbrowns are cooked on the griddle, soaking in the flavors of the grill. However, they are just never cooked all the way through. The outside is so crisp I love it, but the inside is bland and a little mushy. Black Eyed Peas - Easily my new favorite food. A brwon pea with a black center, spiced to perfection, they are just so god damn yummy! I wish I could eat these everyday. Cheese Grits - I like to pretend I'm from the south sometimes, and I will proceed to do so now. I love me some grits. Ain't nothing like some ground corn meal and cheese to wake yer stomach up in the morning. Mmm mm good bitch! I wanted to talk about the Omelette, but apparently I've maxed out the characters one can use in a review... All in all I really can't say enough about how perfect this place is. The decor, environment, service, taste, quality of food and variety are all 10 out of 10.

Great little breakfast spot (other meals too, including BYOB at dinner, but we only had breakfast there each day this week). Nice eggs benedict, pancakes, etc. Pleasant & attentive wait staff, too. Cash only, no credit cards. Wait is often out the door for breakfast, unless you arrive early enough or out of key tourist season periods.

You will note that on my profile for my last meal I said "really good linguine and clams (white) and wine (red)." Well, that takes care of the what, I was always searching for the where. That perfectly piled plate of pasta and bivalves. I found it in Nantucket. We sat at the counter. It was the last seating available so we automatically thought it was the least desirable. Not so. Watching the chef at work was a real treat and a big part of our great experience. Not only was the linguine and clams the best I have ever had, but the place is BYOB! Can you get any better than that? Absolutely amazing food and we didn't have to spend a ton on the vino! The reservation process is weird. You have to stand in line an hour or so before your desired seating. If you're tooling around town send one of your group to take one for the team and stand in line while the other troll out a good bottle of wine to bring. Every bit of weird waiting is completely worth it.

Breakfast is one of my favorite meals of the day. So when I come to Nantucket, this is one of places I head first. During the summer when the tourists are in town, the wait may be long so its best to get there early, especially Sundays. But the food is totally worth the wait. Ive been there before the Tourist Season which there was no wait and during Mid Tourist Season which the wait for 6 people was about 15 minutes. At first glance, it may be a small and cramped place (hence the wait), but the environment and atmosphere was actually quite homey and laid back. The breakfast food here is great too and reasonably priced. I myself always tend to get the Corned Beef Hash with two eggs and I always finish my plate. My fellow diners have gotten the Huevos Rancheros, Pancakes, Eggs Benedict and others which were all really good. Coffee was always fresh as well. After eating here, my mornings are refreshed and Im ready to start my day. This place is Cash Only. So have a friend get a table, and head to the ATM. Other than that, if you want a good breakfast on Nantucket, this is one of the places to go.

What a darling little place. I was only in Nantucket for a few days but my friends raved about Black-Eyed Susan's. I wasn't feeling well so I don't think I was able to experience their best dishes but know that my friends absolutely loved their pancakes and omelets. Hope to go back someday!

Black-Eyed Susan's is BY FAR the best place to have breakfast on Nantucket. I dream about it for days before I arrive. When they disappoint me (which they have a couple of times, but I have been there about 100 times) it is devastating - it ruins my day. Sad but true. The scrambles are amazing - each bite is filled with yummy deliciousness be it veggies or sausage or whatever you have chosen to get. The grits are creamy and wonderful. I rarely get anything else when I'm there but everything I have had is fabulous! Dinner's not too shabby either, though I haven't been in a couple of years so I won't review it. If you're only with 1 or 2 people, sit at the counter - watching them cook the food is mesmerizing.

Was expecting more from Black-Eyed Susan's because of the reviews. The food was good, but nothing exceptional. I always get Eggs Benedict and the EB here was just ok. The place gets crowed on the weekends. We waited for 40 minutes for a table even though the host told us it would be a 20 minute wait tops.

Smaller than average restaurant with a big taste. If you travel to Nantucket, you must try brunch or dinner at Black-Eyed Susan's. Things you need to know: Cash Only, No Reservations, but they take names at the door, so get there early to put your name down, The food is quite good, everything is made from scratch. Only draw back is the restaurant is smaller than average and you may feel a bit squeezed in.

waited about 15 min. to be seated. Our waitress was the one from he... very unfriendly, barely asked us what we wanted. Had to flag her down for anything we needed, never checked on us. Waited 45 min. for our breakfast. Food was nothing to write home about. most likely would never go back.

Ho-Hum. Another decent breakfast place on Nantucket. Nothing spectacular though. I had an omlet and toast which were good, but nothing to write home / or yelp about. The best thing here is the orange jack daniels butter that was on my husbands french toast. We did not have to wait in line which was a plus - service was spotty though.

Lots of hullabaloo for this place, but when push came to shove, Black Eyed Susan's was just fine. My wife and I were on Nantucket for restaurant week and made a rarely accepted reservation at Black Eyed Susan's on our very first night. We got past the odd roll call to kick off the first reservation seating (literally, the hostess reading off names outside the restaurant). "Here," "present," whatever. We were in. The service was somewhat cool - not rude, just not welcoming. The food was pretty good, as I enjoyed a savory three-course meal. Again, it was good enough, just not entirely to the expectations of Yelped reviews and other recommendations from island-goers. Small note: Avoid the bread with "Vermont butter." At $4, the wedge off a loaf and the bland butter spread was a bit disappointing.

Good place, cool looking spot right in town with a fun and busy vibe. Had a craaaaazy delicious french toast in here once with cinnamon and pecans. Reasonable prices as well. Demerits because the service can often be slow. Lines can be very long on summer weekends, but that's no fault of theirs.

We had a fun, delicious dinner at this place during a rainy weekend on Nantucket. Reservations are odd-- they actually want people to line up at the restaurant at 6pm to request a reservation time. However, it was pouring rain and we decided to take our chances by calling in for a reservation instead. They explained they give preference to those in line first, but offered to call us back once those folks had put their reservtions in. They called us back 10 mins later and we were all set for 7:30pm reservation. It's BYO (which helps, given that everything on the Island is so expensive!) and CASH ONLY. The ambience is like that of a small diner -- wood paneled, stools at the counter, etc. We shared the bruschetta app (basically, a "deconstructed" version of bruschetta) and then got the fish of the day with curry (Yum!) and the pork confit (amazing!). We were both very pleased with our food and decided to skip dessert in favor of some ice cream down the road. A fun place, casual and top-notch food. Worth returning!

We tried to go Black-Eyed Susan's for for dinner, but didn't want to wait 2 hours for dinner without reservations so we ended up there for breakfast the next day. As with the dinner hostess the breakfast hostess seemed far from happy to see us. After a 25 minute wait we were seated at the bar right in front of the griddle - that was fun because the two guys working the griddle clearly new what they were doing and did it well. The food was good, but not as good as everyone made it out to be, maybe we went in with too high of expectations. This is a tiny place so if you are claustrophobic you might not like being in such a tight place, but everyone we spoke with said we should give it a try. Next time we'll make dinner reservations to give a second chance.

Best breakfast on the island, hands down. French toast with orange butter, blueberry pancakes, egg scrambles, huevos rancheros, everything here is great. Be prepared to wait though because this is no longer a hidden gem.

OMG... what a hideous wait to get seated even with a party of two. The food however makes you forget how long you waited. The Thai Scramble was excellent so wasn't the corn beef and hash. Enjoy!

I was in Nantucket right after Figawi weekend. Had heard about this restaurant my first visit to the island and decided to give it a try this time around. Everyone raves about Black Eyed Susans including the locals but I have to say I was pretty unimpressed. I ordered Eggs Benedict which is my go-to breakfast pick when eating out. The meal fell short for me. Additionally, the service was terrible. Our server did not come to check on us after our food had been served and I had to flag down another server to ask for tabasco sauce which took another five minutes to deliver despite the restaurant having only three other tables in it (with about two or three servers). Anyone that has been to this restaurant can attest to the fact that the restaurant is small enough to see everything. I literally watched the server go to another table, do a couple of other unnecessary tasks, THEN only when she was walking back toward my table did she go BACK to the shelving unit to get my hot sauce and return with it. I have worked in the service industry off and on for over 10 years so I tend to be very forgiving when I notice servers are busy but this was not the case here. I won't be returning at my next visit to the island.

Most people come for the great breakfasts at Black Eyed Susan's but we went in the evening for a wonderdul dinner prepared by two brilliant chefs. Each dish was tastfully prepared and delivered to our table hot, fresh tasting and artfully displayed. Bring your own bottle of wine and they will pour it for you. However, don't come expecting a beautifully decorated restaurant. Susan's is plain with wood plank walls and no A/C. That makes no difference after you've taken your first bite of your appetizer, entree or dessert. You will enjoy your dinner here more than most restaurants on Nantucket.

Black Eyed Susan's is another restaurant in our Nantucket vacation week rotation - we never miss it. A teeny BYOB on India St, they have a bizarre reservation policy. There are 2 seatings, I believe 6 and 9 (or something thereabouts), you can line up in the morning when they serve breakfast to put your name in, or start lining up before the first seating to put your name in for the 6 or 9. They don't accept credit cards. Does all this sound like too much hassle? It isn't - trust me. I've had just about everything they serve and have loved every bite. Just is fun is to sit at the diner-style bar and watch the craziness going on as the chef's cook everything practically at once (since they operate seatings instead of staggered reservations.) It's truly impressive. If you get tired of your B&B breakfasts, definitely stop by BES. Their breakfast is the best in town, in my opinion, and is reasonably priced. (but bring your own bloodys.)

wile the food is good and it in nice inside the employees are very cruel. The people never can get your name write,it could be bob and the pronunciation could come out as shlomy. and if you can i recommend not sitting near the back wall, the stench seems so seep through the walls because the laboratory is write on the the other side. It is much like an upscale dinner without the old man that everyone knows behind the counter because he comes every day to get breakfast and coffee every morning. I would recommend it just try to avoid the back wall see-ting and excuse the anger managment of some of the employees

I ate here with my boyfriend for breakfast and, as far as I can remember, it took our waitress a while to realize that we were human beings and 1. needed more water re-fills 2. wanted to order our food cuz we were so darn hungry and 3. that we would like to eat our main dish without all the dirty and empty plates on our already small small table. Other than that, the food was pretty good for brunch...a little on the pricier side, but it was worth it.

Just finished eating! Everyone at the table was very happy. Main dishes run at around 24$ as of Sept. 2009. They have BYOB however there is a surcharge of 8$ for it.

Black-Eyed Susan's is the BEST breakfast food on Nantucket Island with reasonable prices. You can't miss it! Look for the crowd of hungry, impatient people waiting outside on India St. and the surrounding sidewalk. The scrambles are excellent, the grits are the best I've ever had, and the sunflower toast goes great with berry jam. Nice menu for vegetarians too! My wife loves the Eggs Benedict with eggs over-easy. If you want to avoid the lines, get there before 8am.

You can't really say anything bad about an upscale diner that serves bottomless coffee for $2.00 The food is well prepared and it is a great spot if you want breakfast. This place is a great casual spot to hang out and grab a meal.

A great place for breakfast or brunch, serving good food, good service and a bill that will not kill you or feel incredibly unreasonable (what I think throughout Nantucket).

Love! Only downside is that anytime when the "summer crowd" is in full swing it can be hard to get a reservation. Everything is delicious and fresh! BYOB is a plus as well!

We went for a late breakfast here twice on our Nantucket vacation. The low-key vibe is a nice trade off from many of the hoity-toity other joints in town. The food is cheap and the Portuguese scramble is great. Definitely go here for a great egg breakfast (served till 1). (If you don't like eggs, skip it, cause that's all they serve.)

We had another good opportunity to sit at the counter and watch the active chefs preparing the delicious food up close. BYOB, solid and consistent service, limited but fantastic menu. The changing menu exhibits seasonal bounty and simple, creative preparation. A smoked bluefish carbonara was a very nice, unexpected special, though the portion was unusually small. Scallops and fresh squid prepared exquisitely. Delicious sourdough bread and excellent desserts. Good , centrally located in-town location.

The food was amazing - the preparation was as unique as it was delicious and it was cooked perfectly. While one of the staff members was a little frosty, the rest of the staff was accommodating and very friendly. Highly recommend. Wise to make a reservation. BYOB.

Hey all. This restaurant was recommended by my fabulous baker (The Green Frog bakery in JP) and he is a total foodie. No surprise we loved it. Had the best food there in Nantucket and we ended up at the pricier Boarding House so we had eats to compare it with. We had breakfast at Black Eye babies twice and Dinner once. I love the BYOB thing. We were there during off-season so managed to scramble a table at the window! But breakfast is definitely great at the "bar" watching the cooks in action. I had the French toast one day. An unusual French toast with the pecan cinnamon crunchy crumble and sour dough bread that they melted down to half its crispy size. I think they used a good amount of clove though and that tends to make my tongue numb. Not a great idea when eating. My husband had the tofu pesto scramble each morning. Fruit bowl was yummy but the bacon side order was the skinniest bacon pieces I ever ate. Not too satisfying an overage of salt. I had eggs benedict the second am of which I am a buff. The first bite! Took me back to special morning breakfasts in Maine when I was a kid. English muffin crispy and perfect and that egg cooked just right. But the ham was literally 1/4 inch thick and a huge round. It dominated the plate and the hollandaise though good was not the best I ever tasted not enough to offset all that pork. We LOVED our dinner meal there. But why can't they call a Thai dish a thai dish instead of just loosely referring to it as a "curry" dish. We all know thai when we taste it. That dish was the fish of the day curry dish and the halibut was seared to absolute perfection. A Yummy yummy night. We love this place it is so full of casual ambiance I could cry!!

Breakfast here was quite good, though I can't rave about it as much as some yelpers have. The experience of sitting at the bar felt like sitting at any breakfast bar around the country. The french toast was dang good, as was my huevos rancheros, and the price was good for nantucket.

As so often happens on Nantucket a marvelous place opens up and then years later declines this is the state of Black Eyed Susan's. It used to have inspired food both for dinner and breakfast, now it is in the a few predictable breakfast choices. One has only to recall the sublime Amish pancakes with apple stuffing touted by the now past history Quaker House. These were ambrosia to the tasting palette. The extra-ordinary has disappeared on Nantucket as chefs cater more to the ordinary tourist rather than think about the food.

This is definately the best breakfast in nantucket, but be prepared to wait a longg time if you come in the summer. They have lots of buttery, sweet fat filled usuals but I always get the tofu scrambles. The best is the spicy thai scramble with broccoli, potatoes, etc. They can also even do a tofu rancheros. Good options for healthy eaters. One of the best restaurants on nantucket in general.

Best restaurant on Nantucket. Where the locals and summer residents go for breakfast/brunch and dinner. Some of my favorite dishes for dinner include the tuna tartar appetizer and striped bass main course (when in season). For breakfast, try a scramble with a side of spicy black-eyed peas or the french toast with orange jack daniels butter. BYOB in the evening and bottomless coffee in the morning. What could be better than that?

Blackeyed susans has great food, its crowded diner atmosphere breakfast is good dinner in top notch andcworth the wait. No reservation by phone wait out front 6pm to hold a place for that night, just as expensive as any where else on the island, BYOB not the easiest place for young kids, no take out no credit cards so bring cash, good for a couple or small group there's also a back patio with two picnic tables

Black-Eyed Susan's is an easily overlooked gem in Nantucket. It's just off Centre St. on India Street, making it maybe a little harder for us non-locals to find. Set up like a diner, its chefs concoct some pretty fantastic stuff mostly right in front of you. I had broiled Northern Pike, flown in from Minnesota apparently, that was simply fabulous. They do not sell beer or wine, but it's BYOB --- so grab a bottle down on Main Street and enjoy an inexpensive evening out on one of the more expensive islands around!

delightful dinner spot; i hear brunch is wonderful as well. super tasty food on a cute, cobblestoned side street close to downtown. there is both indoor and outdoor seating, reasonably priced entrees, and decent service. it is byob, which for us meant 5 bottles of wine for 5 excited girls. at a certain point, they did ask us to leave our table to make room for the next party. but they let us keep our glasses and hang out in their quaint alley for as long as we so desired. good times!

good food, incredibly inexpensive, and most of what i'd say has been said except for this: it is so damn hot in this restaurant. stifling. even if not hot outside, it's a sauna inside. be ready for it and i'd say, wait another few minutes (hey, it's a nice town to walk around...) for something by the door.

(4)Mac K.
Very nice breakfast, if you don't mind waiting in long lines during summer and claustrophobic small space inside. Over-priced like everything on Nantucket, but one of the best breakfast values on the island,
(4)Tom G.
(2)Troy L.

Ugh.
(1)T B.
Hard to write anything positive when hostess told us they were closed while hours said still open. Owner should know the help is more interested in going to the beach. End of summer attitude. This was my last try to bring my business there. Attitude problems.
(1)Eva S.
Good food, cash only, but really rude service. Not sure why they also don't have iced coffee and normal additions like avocado.
(3)Paula T.
Not lunch, closes 1 pm. Opens for dinner. No atmosphere. Dark cuter put front than inside. I salted mine, put butter on the potatoes, put butter on eggs, still not great. Sorry. People didn't seem to thrilled with their Thai and grits either.

My husband and I went to Nantucket for the July 4th week. I am 7 months pregnant and we wanted a relaxing get away. We went to Black Eyed Susan's and my husband looked down and found a hair in his food, minutes later I found a hair in my food. We sent the food back and the waitress could not have been any nicer. The issue was the chef remade my husband's food but refused to remake my food. The nice server explained that I was pregnant and the chef did not care. There was no manager in the restaurant that could manage the situation, which is a testament to owner Susan's management style. I called her twice, left a message and she never called me back. The chef ended up remaking my food in the end but that was 20 mins later. The people around me were appalled and shocked. Susan also owns another restaurant, Chanticleer, I'd stay away from there too, unless you like hair in your food. I would suggest Fog Island Café, it is clean and delicious. The actions of the chef is a direct reflection of Susan and this team has fallen short to provide a clean, enjoyable dining experience. Skip over Black Eyed Susan's, save your time and money.
(1)A M.
(2)David U.
Surly waitress gave 5 seconds to order and stopped filling the "bottomless" cup of coffee rather quickly. Will spend morning coffee money elsewhere.
(2)Marcy H.
Not worth the hype, food was basic, service was just ok. Pricey as well which can be expected on the island, but for the quality of the experience, we were disappointed.
(2)Jonathan S.
(2)Elizabeth O.
(1)Keith G.
(2)Peter Q.
The Portuguese scramble may be the best breakfast of all time. Sit at the counter and watch the cooks!
(5)Erika G.
i have not experienced the breakfast here, which seems to be what this place is built for.
(3)Kristen B.
Would never done there again because of the following reasons. 1) awful service; not friendly 2) was not kid friendly; we were told to sit outside on wet benches and a wet table because they did not allow strollers (felt discriminated against) 3) doesn't take credit/debit- who does that?
(1)Elf ..
(2)Christina B.
(2)Natacho K.
northern hospitality at it's best (or maybe worst). unfortunately, black eyed susan's didn't live up to the hype or me & my friend expectations. to start, the hostess didn't exude a kind spirit and interacted with guests as if they were more a welcomed burden. i've eaten at busy brunch places in boston and nyc where i've encountered hostesses letting people know they appreciate them waiting, don't expect that at black-eyed susans'. once inside (after a 30 minute wait) we ordered our food. my friend ordered an omelet and bacon. the omelet was okay, but the bacon served was the cheap fully cooked microwave bacon. i ordered french toast, which was about as palatable as cardboard with crushed candied pecans on top. when we realized it was "cash only" my friend went to an atm to take cash out. literally within five minutes the hostess asked if i minded waiting outside. that was truly a first, which shocked me and made me feel less than a welcomed diner! in short, sub-par food and an extremely unfriendly hostess. not worth your time, money, or the hype.

(4)Pamela J.

Amazingness !!!! Todd is everything !!! Must Visit Must Eat at least twice if you have a chance. The variety, flavors, ambience is phenomenal !!

5 stars.
(5)Kate S.
(4)James G.
(3)Kathryn J.
Mediocre food, sullen service, and, in August, very long wait-times for breakfast. I can't understand why this place is a favorite. Nantucket has far better places for breakfast that do not so obviously rest on their laurels. Will never return.
(1)Tracy S.
(5)Alex M.

Mmm best brunch on the island! Portuguese scramble is delicious and the bottomless coffee excellent. I'm sold!
(5)Jayna G.
(4)Katie W.
I look forward to coming here every time I'm in Nantucket! This place is a popular brunch spot but it is worth the wait. I always order the Thai Curry Scramble and it is one of my favorite breakfast meals ever.
(5)Cristina B.

(4)Sarah F.
(5)Kerrie D.
I definitely don't understand all the great reviews. The menu was limited, service was poor and the place was cramped. We both ordered the French toast which turned out to be a few pieces of bread on a plate. I would certainly try somewhere else next time.
(1)Deena B.
(3)Max F.
(5)Jenny H.
(4)Jessica B.
(5)John D.
(2)Sarah S.

This was the one place on the island we wish we could go back to A+
(5)Jeremy P.
(4)Allison V.
The best place to get breakfast on Nantucket! Always a wait to get a table but so worth it
(5)LuLu M.
(5)Alex C.
(2)Peter I.
(3)Michael S.
The best breakfast on the island. Had breakfast here several days in a row last visit. Never once disappointed but often hot. Haven't had dinner here in 12 years so can't offer a relevant comment except to say it might be hot and bring your own wine.
(4)Leroy J.
(3)Sor D.
(5)Eva Leona Lerriqs S.
(4)Lani W.
This small little restaurant is great! Our hostess was really accommodating even though we told her we just wanted some appetizers. She gave us a table by the window and fit us into her packed reservation list. The appetizers were also really delicious. Definitely need to check this place out!
(5)Lindsay R.
(5)James B.
Terrific restaurant and a great BYOB bargain (for Nantucket). Sit at the counter and watch the show. Don't miss the tuna tartare.
(5)Bob B.
I've always loved this place for breakfast. The food is consistently good and, while expensive, I just love the place. Food was as good as I expected on this visit, but the service seemed a bit abrupt. I'd appreciate a little less "Durgin Park" next time and a little more welcoming attitude.
(3)Adam M.
(5)Andy F.
(5)Liz D.

(5)Tammy S.
(1)Ciprian T.
One of the best breakfasts on the island of Nantucket and they are BYOB at night which is great ! Will definitely come back !
(4)Rob N.

(5)Julia J.
(5)lore f.
(5)Kenan F.
(3)K C.
Long line. Rude wait. Average food.
(1)Nicole S.
Food Ok. Service HORRIBLE. No one exaggerated when warning about poor service. Between the ordering process and putting money was on the table, the waitress didn't give us the time of day. The hostess refilled drinks and additional requests only because we could waive her down. Once money on the table the waitress swooped right in. Never again.
(2)Kristie M.
Great breakfast - especially the French toast and pancakes! We love it here and especially love sitting out on the patio. Friendly service and excellent food!
(4)Jonathan D.
(5)robert m.
Had breakfast there last week. Food was very good (which has never been an issue) and the hostess seemed to have lost some of her 'attitude' (which has always been an issue).
(4)Hillary S.
This place is delicious. I've only eaten breakfast here and I always get the huevos rancheros & black eyed peas, they are to die for. It gets very busy here, try sitting outside if you can!
(5)Mad C.

(5)Melissa M.
(5)Scilla M.
(3)Dave G.

(2)Stan G.
While breakfast was very good we had relatively bad service. I ordered grits w/o cheese, got cheese. I ordered no toast and got the toast. We ordered an OJ and never got that! Not terribly busy so really no excuses.
(3)Bryan C.
Great atmosphere. BYOB and cash only. Capellini outstanding as was the bread w/Vermont butter.
(5)Jenna H.

(3)Michael B.
(3)Chad C.
great local diner/coffee shop. we only had breakfast there, but was so good we went twice. its worth the wait! the sausage is awesome!

(3)Abner F.
Best breakfast on the island, hands down. French toast with orange butter, blueberry pancakes, egg scrambles, huevos rancheros, everything here is great. Be prepared to wait though because this is no longer a hidden gem.
(5)Mark W.
OMG... what a hideous wait to get seated even with a party of two.

(3)Jill L.
(3)Reto E.
Just finished eating! Everyone at the table was very happy. Main dishes run at around 24$ as of Sept. 2009. They have BYOB however there is a surcharge of 8$ for it.
(5)Tom A.
(4)K O.
You can't really say anything bad about an upscale diner that serves bottomless coffee for $2.00 The food is well prepared and it is a great spot if you want breakfast. This place is a great casual spot to hang out and grab a meal.
(4)Naomi U.
A great place for breakfast or brunch, serving good food, good service and a bill that will not kill you or feel incredibly unreasonable (what I think throughout Nantucket).
(4)s f.
Love! Only downside is that anytime when the "summer crowd" is in full swing it can be hard to get a reservation. Everything is delicious and fresh! BYOB is a plus as well!
(4)Sarah D.
(4)Elizabeth G.
(5)Liane G.
The food was amazing - the preparation was as unique as it was delicious and it was cooked perfectly. While one of the staff members was a little frosty, the rest of the staff was accommodating and very friendly. Highly recommend. Wise to make a reservation. BYOB.
(5)Diane E.
(4)David R.
Breakfast here was quite good, though I can't rave about it as much as some yelpers have. The experience of sitting at the bar felt like sitting at any breakfast bar around the country. The french toast was dang good, as was my huevos rancheros, and the price was good for nantucket.
(4)ursula a.
(3)Joey M.
(4)Gareth M.
(5)Elaine M.
(5)Ryan E.
(5)julia r.
delightful dinner spot; i hear brunch is wonderful as well. super tasty food on a cute, cobblestoned side street close to downtown. there is both indoor and outdoor seating, reasonably priced entrees, and decent service. it is byob, which for us meant 5 bottles of wine for 5 excited girls. at a certain point, they did ask us to leave our table to make room for the next party. but they let us keep our glasses and hang out in their quaint alley for as long as we so desired. good times!
(5)Laurie A.
good food, incredibly inexpensive, and most of what i'd say has been said except for this: it is so damn hot in this restaurant. stifling. even if not hot outside, it's a sauna inside. be ready for it and i'd say, wait another few minutes (hey, it's a nice town to walk around...) for something by the door.
