North End Pastry goodness in Medford Square. Who could ask for more? It's almost not fair that someplace this delicious is so convenient. Everything I've had here has been good. The lobster tails here are a unique and delicious treat bound to impress. The cannolis are delish but do try the chocolate dipped as well. The chocolate helps hold the structure together as we'll as adding perfection to the taste. The cookies are bueno as well as the cakes, no surprise. Did I mention it's located in Medford Square? So no need to travel to the North End. Try it! 'nough said.

It's the cannolis. It's always been the cannolis. I was sent out to get cannolis for a Christmas Eve dessert at my girlfriend's family; Having the free will to choose between coming here on Christmas Eve or going to the North End location (and fighting back the throngs of tourists that finally gave up on the ever-present line at Mike's)...it was a no-brainer. I was in and out in about 20 minutes (which was pretty quick, considering that it was Christmas Eve) and on my way with two cannoli packs (a DIY cannoli set: each has a 6-pack of shells and pastry bag of cream so you can make them fresh.) Oh, and I got my mom a cannoli so she wouldn't feel left out (I'm a class act.) $35 later, my girlfriend's family loved me. Try it out for yourself sometime, but tell them you went to the North End so you look even more considerate/eager to please. PS- Parking's on the street; lots of people just double-parked and the world kept spinning. YMMV.

I'm just going to go ahead and say it: best cannoli siciliani in the area. The ricotta filling is exceptional. I'd recommend the chocolate dipped as opposed to the chocolate covered. Very friendly staff, too. Would go back.

Best Italian pastry shops in Eastern Massachusetts.

Oh, how I love thee!!! Ricotta cake, chocolate cream pie, lobster tail, the lemon cake you suggested and were totally right about, canollis as good as my mom's (shhhhhh). The lobster tails, pizza, I SWEAR I could eat everything in this place. You've seen me - I never walk out with less than two shopping bags. I don't know what happens to me. It's a genetic thing. Just GO THERE! But don't touch my parking space :)

No matter what anyone tells you, the lobster tail is not a one-man job. Two-man (or in my case with my girlfriend), it's doable, but it is not recommended. Three - you all have to be foodies, Four, decent size for everyone, Five - Just About Right, Ten - Everyone still gets a bite. Yes, yes, yes, its is that freaking huge - Modern Pastry's Lobster Tail is delicious - creamy ricotta custard etc inside of a flaky roll. Enough for five to ten people. Tackle your custom filled cannoli before attempting anything else. The creme brulee is delicious and so is the chocolate mousse cake. Oh, my stomach hurts just thinking about the night we had the lobster tail.

Modern Pastry is by far the best pastry shop!! This location is just as good if not better than the North End location minus the long lines and crowds. In my opinion it is definitely far better than Mike's Pastry. We frequent Cafe Vittoria in the North End and it turns out that they get their pastries from Modern. So now we go straight to the source when we need a fix. The Lobster Tail--So far this is the best one I have had-ever! They fill it when you order & the filling is delicious and has just the right amount of zest. The Cannoli--Very, very fresh and tasty! Again it's filled to order- the way it should be! Just the right amount of sweetness and very creamy. The Tiramisu-- It has the perfect cream to lady finger ratio and the filling is delicious! The lady fingers dipped in espresso give the perfect balance to this sweet and tasty treat! The Ricotta Pie--Modern makes a mean Ricotta Pie. We bought a whole pie for Easter and everyone really enjoyed it. It's a bit too sweet for my taste though. The Carrot Cake-- It was very moist and the frosting was delicious!! A+ on the carrot cake especially since I've had some pretty bad experiences with store bought ones before. Modern Pastry is definitely worth a try if you're in the Medford area. Otherwise the North End location is a close second.

ON Hanover busy street in North End you'll find Modern pastry usually with a small line outside but well worth the wait. The have an excellent choice of Italian pastries including, canollis, eclairs, tiramisu, rum cake, lemon tartes, italian cookies, delicious strawberry shortcake and cheesecake, napoleans....A LOT! Well at 7 mths pregnant with a sweet tooth I wanted all of it but we settled to share chocolate rum cake, Napoleon, and a canolli with chocolate shell. I ate slowly to savor every single bite hoping the end wouldn't be near! It was just fantastic! I love this small little pastry shop in North End. I definitely will be going back soon. You are also welcome to coffee's, cappuccinos, and cordials I believe. It's worth it!

Just like the North End location but without the line.

Who doesn't like italian pastries? And who doesn't like having an italian pastry shop down the street from their house? NOT ME! I love having Modern here in Medford Square. There is no way I would go to the North End before a holiday. Can you say STUNATA? Anyway I picked up a huge carrot cake for Easter (duh) and some mixed italian cookies. Oh yeah the chocolate dipped biscotti are delicioso! I'm always in charge of bringing Modern to all of the holidays with my italian adopted family so they must be doing something right.

Nice selection of mouse cake slices, especially the chocolate. Try the pistachio cookies, too--buttery, crunchy, smooth and tasty. Great friendly service too.

So first we attempted to go to the location in the North End and the line was craaaazy. Okay to be honest we wanted to go to Mike's but I have never seen such a long line so we decided to go to Modern instead. Usually less crowded right? But no, they also had a loooong line. We waited for a while before I made the executive decision that we should just go to the one in Medford. Hey, we had a car and free time so why not. We filled a pastry box with different treats and it only cost $18. Sweet. Literally and figuratively. We got a cannoli, german chocolate cake, a black and white cookie, oreo cake and cheesecake. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and by the next day we had barely eaten anything from the box. Everything was really tasty though and I am happy to be able to go to the Medford location when the Boston location is swamped.

The whoopie pie I bought today was inedible -- clearly had been frozen then defrosted because the cake was a little cool and dry, the vanilla frosting was like cheap grocery store frosting and the chocolate was low quality and tasteless. I took one bite then threw the entire pastry away rather than eat something so gross. Frankly, I knew I wasn't going to get anything worthwhile the moment I walked in the shop because I could just tell by looking at the sweets that they were not well made food, but I tried a simple whoopie pie because I had heard of their reputation and the sweet was actually WORSE than I had imagined. Stay away.

It is dangerous that this Modern is right next to my beloved Elizabeth Grady! This shop is actually tolerable, unlike the one in the North End that you wouldn't catch me waiting in that obscene line for any amount of money. The place is clean, spacious, and has TONS of goodies! I got a whoopie pie (huge and filled with delicious frosting), an apple wedge for the fiancee (he said it was very good), a few florentines (the best florentine I've ever had hands down!), and a huge bag of breadcrumbs for $1. The quality was very good, rich flavors, and not sickeningly sweet. Total was roughly $8.50 which was entirely reasonable for the quality and quantity. I can't wait to go back!

Dear Chocolate Cupcake with Rubber Duckie on Top: I am sorry I did not give you the attention you so deserved. You were absolutely wonderful and I want to eat your likeness every day. Please do not be upset with me that I cheated on you with a Large Black and White Cookie. I hope you allow me to make it up to you by visiting with you over and over again. Sincerely, E.

While it doesn't compare to the famous North End location it still makes some favorites well enough to stop in if I am in the area. It's much smaller then the North End version and obviously parking is a little easier to find here. Staff is very friendly and helpful here so I'll be back!

Carm B.
One of our waitresses suggested Modern to us because there was no possibility of getting through the door at Mike's and I am so glad she did. We still waited in a long line but it was well worth it. The cannoli and pastries we ordered were made to order and fantastic. The staff was very friendly and courteous even though it was beyond packed. This is a "real" Italian bakery. When I get back to Boston, you know I will be stopping by Modern again.

It's a hassle to drive down to North End.. and even more of a hassle to park. The line at the Modern Pastry there is long.. but a lot better than this one. They don't have half the fresh pastries they have downtown. I wanted a fresh fruit tart.. which they didn't have. Tried the gelato.. it was okay. Dissapointing! And the hours for this place sucks! People in the real world work!

Hmm... it seems like everybody is trying to rate the Modern Pastry that's in the North End. I would say that the North End one is an entire star better this this location. Even though I'm sure they use the same recipe's, it seems like the pastries here were not baked with as much care as the other one. The cakes here are definitely above average. They have a large variety of flavors and combinations. Their cannoli's are only ok because their cream wasn't fantastic. The wait can be a little long sometimes, but the turn around is pretty quick. A bit too pricy to be worth the consistent trip for a bake treat trip.

Modern or Mike's it is a debate that goes on and on. First let me say, I love Mike's. I lived in the North End 10 years (moving out in 2011), and I went there probably twice a month. However, my friend and I decided to do a neighborhood blind taste test of all the canollis in bakery shops or cafes. Mike's placed second and to my surprise we both agreed that Modern was the best. I still like Mike's, especially with Chocolate chips, but Modern is definitely delicious. In addition, when they have it, Modern's marzapan is also better than Mike's. Unfortunately, it is often unavailable. The Napolean cake is also quite delicious. In general, I would say that Modern has a bit fancier desserts in their cases than Mike's. My advice would be to go to both sometime during the week before you get dinner. and then try a blind taste test for yourself. Another nice thing about Modern is they have a full liquor license, so you can get some great cordials to go with your dessert or coffee. In general, if you don't plan to try to eat their, go before dinner, not after. It will save you a long wait.

Best cannoli of my life. service is fast and friendly. Parking is on street which is kind of unfortunate. Also if your there around lunch time they have pizza, arancini and calzones. The pizza is similar to deep dish. As for the arancinis and calzones they are the quality I would expect to find in the north end. Prices are very reasonable as well

We kept trying to get to Mike's, but the lines were outrageous. Each time, we ended up here (though I've seen long lines here as well). Great sfogliatelle. Delicious cannoli. Good espresso drinks and coffee. Never had a bad pastry here. On our first visit, There was a little boy working the espresso machine who amazed us with his ease and skill. We thought he was playing dress up as a baker--until we saw him in action behind the counter. The kid was all business.

Just as tasty as their hanover st. location....don't listen to all the fuss, Mike's is just a name, Modern is quality!

How have I not been to this branch of Modern Pastry before?!? I'm such a huge fan of the location in the North End...I literally squealed in surprise when our chosen lunch spot was a couple doors down from this bakery location in Medford. I almost ran inside, and quickly ordered up a 1/2 dozen mini cannolis with mini chocolate chips on the ends, and a couple of my favorite vanilla cupcakes in the world. Didn't have to deal with an amusement park line or brusque servers behind the counter, as is usually the case with the North End Modern...one server even complimented me on my shirt! Same deliciousness...cannolis are awesome. Love this place :)
(5)
May W.
They make basic, normal-sized cannolis with fresh shells and amazing filling. They also have a bunch of great pastries and breads that I was in carb heaven! A lot less overwhelming than Mike's Pastry.
(4)
Christopher M.
I'm a big fan of Modern Pastry, mostly because I live right around the corner and now I don't have to drive into the North End when I have a cannoli craving. I still don't think they're as good as Mike's, but nonetheless, they're damn good. You basically build your own cannoli: you choose the shell (regular, chocolate dipped, etc), the filling (ricotta, yellow cream, etc) and toppings (nuts, chocolate chips, etc), which is great for picky eaters or people who don't like ricotta. Note: sometimes they have two different 'levels' of cannoli - the regular ricotta and the 'fresh' ricotta, which costs about a buck extra. It's worth the extra buck!
(4)
Rhea K.
Really liked this place. The cannolis are normal-sized and the filling is very mild; not overly sweet, and has a little tang from the ricotta. Coffees here are also good, and it's usually a little less crowded than Mike's, with a small seating area. Would come back here again.

It used to be that getting the best cannoli in the world meant hauling my sorry behind all the way to the Modern Pastry shop in the North End and spending an hour looking for parking -- but it was worth it. Imagine my delight when I learned there was another one in MEDFORD!!! And the cannoli are -- THE SAME (= amazing, heavenly, unbelievable). Easy parking, yes -- but don't be surprised if there's a line here, too -- people coming in in droves to pick up the customized cakes they've ordered. Nevertheless, despite the crowds and all, the staff (who all look to be 13-17 years old!) are always EXTREMELY friendly, happy to make special requests, coffee, etc. The place is clean, the coffee is very good, the cannoli (and the lobster tails) are AMAZING, the location is extremely convenient from the northern burbs.
(5)
Phil C.
If you get a cannoli here, go "off menu" and see if they have mascapone cheese filling. It's worth the wait. You'll never go back to ricotta or yellow cream again...

Went to this place because the line seemed slightly shorter than the one at Mike's Pastry. However, the counter area and interior is actually much smaller than the one at Mike's, so today it still took a 15 minute wait to get your order. You get a choice of shells and filling for the cannoli, and they fill the shells on the spot. I think this actually contributes to the shell's being crispier because they are freshly filled. I got a chocolate dipped ricotta cheese cannoli, which was excellent and rich. I can't really decide whether it is better or worse than Mike's. Other items: Pine-nut topped macaroon: Very good, but quite sweet- you can't eat too many of these at once. The outside is chewy but the interior is very soft and amazing. Napoleon: Pastry layered with custard-like cream and topped with frosting. Decent, but again very sweet. I prefer lighter Napoleons that use more creamy/milky cream. Red velvet cupcake: Ok, this one is actually amazing. The cake is very moist, and has just the hint of chocolate. The cream cheese frosting is sooo good. I've never really liked cream cheese frosting (or frosting in general), but this one has just the right amount of cheese taste. I was surprised it was so good.

Waited in a very long line for a cannoli and some other treats. The let down is that maybe it's not worth the nearly hour long wait on a sunny saturday in February. The cannoli was good and you're damn right I finished it but it left me trying to remember why I almost died and went to heaven the last time I had one. Over a year and half ago from Mike's Pastry. I'll have to taste test them side by side sometime, but I have a feeling that I really liked the creaminess of Mike's ricotta. This one was less creamy BUT piped in fresh when you order. In addition we got a torroni (sp?? I think that's what it's called). They're like long, fresh, candy bars,. Filled with nougat, chocolate, fruit or nuts. I liked the caramel one. It was like a homemade Snickers.

This offshoot of the North End bakery doesn't have quite as much character and charm as the original, but it's much more convenient to get all of your authentic Italian pastries at this location - and the Italian pastries are molto bene! Their canoli are outstanding. You choose what type of shell you want (plain, chocolate dipped, ect) and they fill it with either ricotta, vanilla or chocolate cream on the spot. None of those pre-filled canoli sitting around getting soggy! They even sprinkle a little powdered sugar over the top if you wish! But my favorite are the zeppole! It's actually rare to find a bakery - even an authentic italian bakery - who sells zeppole! I hope it's not just for La Festa di San Giuseppe on March 19th and these delicious pastries stick around for a while! Zeppole's are traditionally from Southern Italy and are donut shaped fried dough fritters that are cut in half and filled with either custard or ricotta, and often jelly or cherries, and dusted with powdered sugar. Modern's was benissimo!

Deep dish sicillian pizza here is great (got it by the slice). The cookies are great. The cappuccino is great. The random desserts that temp me that I didn't know I wanted until I walked in and saw them on display are great. Maybe the only down side is that they don't have soy milk if you want it in your cappiccino. I think I can live with that : )

I was driving through Medford yesterday, and I thought that perhaps I was just hungry and seeing an Oasis in the desert. But no, there it was. . . a second location of Modern Pastry. Beautiful. I was able to park right up front with no quarters needed. Free parking. What? Brilliant. There was no wait around lunchtime. The woman was working the counter was super-friendly while I ordered a half pound of almond biscotti. Best of all, the biscotti were wrapped in an old-fashioned bakery box with the red string. The biscotti were perfectly cooked. They were crispy, sweet, but not too sweet, and the perfect complement to a cup of coffee. And with no crazy wait and ample parking day or night, I will definitely be back.

How convenient! Right after the morning service at New England Baptist Church, I went into the store to grab a small cannoli. The last time I ate a cannoli, I thought there was just too much cream so this time I bought a small cannoli. It was so good! I like the crispy, buttery shell with chocolate cream. Next time I need to try the other pastries!

No need to drive to Boston just come over to Medford . This place is great and the staff is very friendly. I personally just don't go to a bakery for a Cannoli (they have a great Cannoli) I love all different types of pastries and Modern has a great selection.one of my favorite things to get there is the meat rice ball. They're awesome!

This pastry shop that also does fudge is on a busy busy street in Medford. The one thing that allowed me to stop was a parking spot that let me stay longer than 10 minutes - because it really takes more than 10 minutes for a newbie to soak in all that is this shop. I had no idea what I really wanted - but a main reason to stop was because a really great friend *needed* to have something super yummy (girls you know what I mean). Now, everything looked fabulous - but nothing was labeled. I do mean NOTHING. The soup of the day - who knows what it was, what was wrapped in that lovely bread? I dunno. I recognized the carrot cake by the carrot it had iced on the top and of course, there were my "i don't care if i'm blind, i'll know" faves - ricotta pie and strawberry cheesecake - but there was something that had 1,000 layers of pastry that was gorgeous but, alas, I will have to call it the "unknown fabulously layered thing" and there were no prices that I could see...other than a small handwritten board...that I paid no attention to. So what did I order... Ricotta Pie - very small slice, kinda dry but relatively good. Apple Turnover *gasp* - I gasp because I don't like apples - but I always try Apple Turnovers - wasn't flaky at all so I wasn't impressed Sicilian slice -kinda - not a crusty gorgeously cheesy mess that I'm used to but more like thick pastry crust that looked like sliced bread? - yea kinda different but not bad when it has pepperoni on it - but seriously, what isn't? Broccoli stuffed breadie thing - VERY GOOD - loved that - was totally sad that I couldn't eat it all because I wanted to share it with hubbie. Rice Ball - Hubbie said that there was some kind of meat and a couple sweet peas in the middle and at first he was totally bummed that there was no sauce on it - he's a saucy kinda guy - but after eating (which I got none) he liked it. Total: $11 - not bad So would I recommend - yea I would - would I go out of my way to go to - hmmm maybe not.

I LOVE this place and I am never disappointed in their pastries however I do get disappointed by the lines sometimes. Occasionally the help have attitude problems but with all the people in line, I would have one too. I would have given them 5 stars but they are very expensive and on a teacher's salary it's difficult but I just don't go as often as I would like to. This place is worth it though and I usually meet very nice people while waiting in line.

Mike's may be the place for cannolis, but the tarts and variety of other desserts here are amazing. I ordered the berry tart and it was by far one of the best I'd ever had. I loved the selection and wish I had bought more!

I know everyone says "Mikes Mikes Mikes", but to me that place seems so touristy. I try to find the real authentic Italian bakeries. Modern's is pretty unassuming inside. It's stripped down and bare. I've had a few things there and overall they are pretty good. Avoid the cupcakes though. The cake was bland and unflavorful and the frosting tasted like cheap grocery store frosting. The wall of crap for sale by the front door kind of scares me a bit though.

Cannoli... Cannoli... Cannoli... The Best ANYWHERE. If you are true Italian pastry lover Modern Pastry delivers every time. Skip Mikes and skip Bovas if at all possible. One more thing. To those who say it's impossible to get in and out of the North End. WRONG! Plenty of affordable parking near by on the North End waterfront. You know how c'mon! Go off hours and off days and WALK for about 7 minutes and you are on Hanover Street. From Hanover Street you can access all of the North End. Enjoy a great meal then WALK to just about anywhere in Boston. Have fun WALKING Boston and make the North End a regular part of your culinary adventures!

If you think that having "the other cannoli" (which is located right across from this bakery in the North End location) is the best cannoli you ever had? Think again - you haven't obviously tried Modern Pastry's ricotta filled cannoli. It is the best cannoli you will ever have (at least in the United States). It always fresh since they make it in small batches. The quality of the ricotta and the flavors are spot on. And their torone is the best. Like the cannoli it always fresh, it has more chewiness to it but softer. The nuts are high quality. The torone with the hazelnut coating is another caterory on its own. Since I live in Los Angeles, I have to asked to to fly it out for me and its always worth it!

This place is worthy of a 5 star rating. I attest to perfectly made: cannolis, lobster tails (huge), ricotta pies, napoleans & sfogliatella. This is my favorite bakery in the North End, beats the competition by far, with Bovas right behind.
(5)

Order the lobster tail, as it is flaky and delicious. And huge... big enough to share, though you'll want to eat it all yourself. It's simply perfect.

Updating because I think I have sampled everything the offer now. Amazing pastry, good prices, freshness is always on point, friendly sevice (some of the niceest people run this place), the most delicious soups on the planet, nice strong coffee. The ONLY bad thing I can say is parking can be differcult at times.

The line for this place really is better then the one located on Hanover and it's like a little piece of heaven nestled in Medford. I prefer this location and pastries over Mike's anyday, especially with the line that snakes all around Mike's, this is so much better.

Nice place. cheerful atmosphere, combining old-school authenticity with a hint of Southern European flair. the deserts/pastries in the glass cases looked delicious-and very sweet! The tables and chairs created a "cafe" like seating area and vibe. the woman behind the counter had the air of a seasoned old pro. the cannoli I bought- ricotta and yellow cream (next time I get the chocolate) were delicious and expertly made. and the prepared savory food in the small glass heating case - large aranciata balls, plain deep-crust style pizza (in both cheese and pepperoni) and squares of lasagna- looked seriously delicious! if you're anywhere near Medford Sq, stop in here. it IS like a bit of the North End just North of Boston.

Horrible Experience!! I'd give negative stars for a cake I bought here for my parents 50th anniversary. Over the phone I thought there was enough of a language barrier that I went in person to tell them what I wanted for this special cake - and that $$ was not an object. I got this horrible cake--in orange and black--I specifically requested gold--but hey did add probably a hundred pieces of gold leaf shaped inedible little papers all around the outside. It was the worst looking cake ever -- and insult to injury -- the chocolate cake tasted like someone had spilled a case of pepper into it. I picked up this cake on my way to the party or I wouldn't have accepted it! It was an embarassment!! And the girl who took my order was more interested in smoking a butt on Salem St. than addressing the issue of what happened or helping in any way. TWO THUMBS DOWN!

Yes the pastries are wonderful - DUH. But the real gems of Modern Pastry are the RICE BALLS. Get them for breakfast, get them for lunch, get them for dinner - EVERY time you see them in the store. They will improve your life 200%.

Not bad at all, but not as good as I expected. I thought the Cannoli was pretty good, but not my favorite. The small custard pie I found to be better than the Cannoli, the hint of honey really made it standout. The reason I came to this store was to avoid the crowds of tourists that mob the North End store. The Pizelles looked good but they don't make them there. I am glad that this place has close because I don't think it's worth the haul downtown.

If you like Modern Pastry but don't want to wait in line forever at their North End shop, com here! They have the same scrumptious canolis (SO GOOD) and if you like Italian pastries, you definitely need to try their ricotta pie. It's to die for! I only give it 4 stars because everything else that I've ordered from there have been mediocre. To list some of these mediocre goodies: Italian cookies, chocolate mousse, strawberry cheese cake Go there for the canolis, ricotta pie, and tiramisu. Oh, and they started serving gelato this summer - I still have yet to try that.

How fabulous to have a North End bakery with an "outpost" so close to our home! Thankfully not too close, that could get dangerous! Their cannolis are decadent! We ordered a strawberry shortcake for an anniversary party - it was TO DIE FOR delicious! I know for sure this is where we will get our cakes in the future. Y-U-M!!!!

Love this Medford outpost of a fabulous bakery. The women behind the counter have always been very friendly and happy to banter while wrapping up the goodies. The broccoli-chicken and spinach mini calzones are AMAZING. Just thinking about them makes we want to walk down there and get one now. The freshly filled cannolis are delicious as everyone has already said. My personal favorite are the turnovers, apple and blueberry especially. And I'm always pleasantly surprised at how darn cheap everything is. A lunch for about 5 bucks, two turnovers for 5 bucks...a steal. Thanks Modern!

The best Italian Bakery possibly in all of the country. Here you will find the best canolis and ricotta pie. Everytime I am home from California this is a must stop. Anyone giving this place less than 4 stars is insane. I give Modern Pastry a 98/100

This place is a dessert lovers dream come true. I was overwhelmed by so many options when I walked in and didnt know what to order! I eventually chose the cream puff, and although I felt extremely guilty while eating it (It is huge and you know it has to be packed with calories!) it was worth it! So delicious...I ate the whole thing!

Perfect little sneaky location out of the North end but the sneaky has pretty uch worn off. They have the best italian goodies ever but they move super slow and you def can not "run in" the wait is super long no matter how many people are in there. regardless, the food is yummy

I've tried three things here. The first was the massive red velvet cupcake, which was so moist and delicious with a really solid cream cheese frosting. I then got the chocolate covered cheesecake which was unbelievably rich, the way I remember cheesecakes that my mom made growing up. The chocolate coating is like a sticky robe, not a crackly coating, and really went well with the cheesecake. Finally I tried some of the torrone which was good but I'm not a big fan of maringue so not really for me. It's a great bakery and I plan to return

Three stars for the Pizelles. Negative five stars for the cute mouse behind the counter. I enjoy the wilderness, but not mixed with Pizelles.

I must admit that I have never physically been to Modern Pastry, but after viewing a special on them a few years ago on the Food Network, I became a loyal (if not occasionally obsessed...but not in a creepy way) fan. I order up torrone by the ton every holiday season. While I am most enamored with the regular torrone dipped in chocolate, I am easily tempted by the cappuccino, caramel, and nearly every other version that is produced by Modern Pastry. In short, I adore them and am saddened by the passing of another holiday season....however, maybe this year I will break my new years resolution and order some for Easter too?? :)

So I don't buy into hype. Hence why we decided to skip Mike's for Modern. Sure it doesn't have the famed reputation, but I like to root for the underdog every now and then. Already I liked that this place was not a mad house like Mike's, where you would think their canolis could cure illnesses the way people line up for them. There was a short line (lack of any line does make me suspicious) and we finally settled on a slice of ricotta pie. The seating was only for service, which was a little annoying but I wasn't going to lose sleep over it. Anyway, I was glad I didn't get the expected (read: predictable) canoli and our dessert was delicious. Not too rich but just right. I'm sure Mike's isn't that much better. I've only stepped in there once, and that was probably the last time. (It wasn't memorable)

Incredible cannoli and to-die-for torrone. Thank you to the local gentleman who steered me in the direction of Modern! My next visit to Boston will include as many trips to Modern as I can fit in. Until then, thank heavens they ship!

It's ok because you can't find this kind of pastry all of the country. If you are visiting you have to try it. Their cannoli's are good, their pastries ok...but I'm a whoopie pie fan! While living in California I couldn't find them anywhere so as soon as I came back the first thing I did was stop at Modern's for some whoopie. It's very good when it's fresh but their stuff isn't always made that day and believe me you'll know it.

This place has the best cannoli in all of Boston, I swear. And it's not even in Boston. The key: they don't fill the cannoli til you order it, so it doesn't have a chance to get stale or soggy sitting in a display case. The coffee here is awesome too - nice and strong. The Italian cookies are delish too - I think I've liked everything I've tried here, and it's so much easier to park here than in the North End!

Chocolate. Torrone. Together at last. Awesome. I've eaten a lot of torrone in Italy and this is right up there with the best. I would highly recommend the nougat at this place.

Bostonians are divided into one of two camps: those who vouch for Mike's and those who can't live without Modern. Just down and across the street from each other, the two pastry shops are arguably the best in the North End, if not the city. I've gone to both (full disclosure: I'm a Modern fan) and have to say that Modern is my favorite. When it comes down to it, it's really about the small things because let's face it - a cannoli here is pretty much a cannoli there. Except when you fill yours fresh right after you order them. Mike's doesn't. At Modern, you stand in a ridiculously long line in a tiny shop with a few seats and tables (good luck getting one) and place your order to one of several very helpful staff. They'll head to the back to fill your cannoli (plain, chocolate-covered or with chocolate chips) and then ask if you want powdered sugar (you do). Then it's into a box wrapped with string and you're good to go. The pastries at Modern just taste more fresh. Mike's is good too but it has a "I've been sitting out here for a bit" taste.

I would come back if I am in Medford and want a sweet but I didn't think the moon pie was that great. It is definitely A OK. I did not get a headache from the frosting being too sweet but it is just a dense vanilla cake with buttercream. I had a mocha which was made with a packet of swiss miss. Not enough espresso flavor. Would skip it and go to starbucks next time. My huband devoured his florentine cookie which looked really good so maybe next time I'll try that. My three year old son did not even lick half his icing of his cupcake. I tasted the frosting and it was pretty good (not crazy sweet like some places-Party favors in Brookline perhaps?!). The cake part was decent but generic. Might try a different bakery in Medford next time.

I went to Modern Pastry to make pastries for a big family event, and it was a great decision. After some not so friendly phone conversations with other pastry shops in the North End (who shall not be named), Modern was happy to accommodate our needs (a wedding for over 100 people on a Saturday evening in June). They extended their delivery hours for us so the cannoli wouldn't get soggy. Our family was raving about the desserts all weekend. Yummy desserts, friendly staff...what more can you ask for?

If you like sweets and candies, walk no further. Quite the decadent treat. These were an amazing gift from a true kind person. You can't go wrong with Any of the choices but the classic chewy chocolate goodness is hard to resist. Enjoy

Good good good. LOVE their cannoli. I'm definitely a Modern Pastry fan over the, well, other guys. The shell is nice and crispy. Not too thick and slightly flaky. But the filling is just sooooooo good.

Yesterday I went online to find a place that made Italian cheese cake and a birthday cake for my dads up coming celebration so I called Modern Pastry. The young lady who answers the phone spoke English but her comprehension skills were dismal. In the reviews on Yelp there is a photo of a cheese cake covered with chocolate ganache. Looked beautiful. So I call asking about the cake and wanting to know more about as in price. It was the strangest conversation I referred to the image online of a cheesecake with ganache. And she tells me a Turtle Cheesecake and I say no a cheesecake with chocolate ganache. We kept going round and round. It was one of the most bizarre conversations and we both speak English. This is a bakery and special orders are always part of the service...at every bakeries...even the ones in the supermarket. So what the f--- just make a cheesecake and cover it with chocolate ganache and tell me the price. It's a bakery you do special orders for cakes, wedding cakes and everything else under the sun. Stupido!

4 stars for going Cash only, but the Lobster Tail pastry is the BEST. Very friendly people and delicious pastries and cookies.

We managed to find Modern Pastry in Medford, though I had to find parking on a street a few blocks away. Nutella croissants were $3 each. Chocolate florentines were by weight, with ours coming in at about $2.40. Lots of dense Nutella in the pastry. Yum. They have a small selection of gluten free sweets that contain almond flour. Muffins for $3 that are gluten, dairy, soy free. Gluten and Dairy free Whoopee Pies $3. And for $5.95, gluten free cannolis. There's a few tables and chairs set up for those who can't wait to enjoy their treats. Cash only.

The fact that they don't accept credit cards make the whole experience frustrating before you even walk in the store. In 2015 everyday me should be able to use a credit card, because not everyone cary enough cash in the pocket.

Has everything I want: Tiny but quaint European (actually European, not trying super hard to appear so) ambiance, good fresh pastries and Italian pop music wafting through the air. Festive but homestyle atmosphere, good to have a seat and read the newspaper with a great Italian coffee or just pass through and grab some pastries for later on. Medford is out of my way but it's worth it to go to this place.

I wandered into Modern Pastry while waiting to pick up food from a nearby restaurant. Cozy with a nice atmosphere, an interesting mix of different offerings. I got a few different pastries, cannoli, and cookies, though the highlight was definitely the ricotta pie, which was great. I only got 2 slices, plan to be back for a whole pie.

I liked Mike's in the North End, but there's something to be said about NOT trekking all the way out to the North End, waiting in a line around the block, then crowding into the mob scene in the store jostling for a spot at the counter. We drove to Medford center, found a nice parking spot easily within walking distance, then just popped into Modern and picked out some yummy treats at a leisurely pace. Tried some of the nougat, which was delicious, but a bit pricy. The real winner for me was the berry tart - black and raspberries sitting over cream in a delicate chocolate bowl. I can eat 5 of these in one sitting! Thanks to Phil C. for the tip, we'll definitely be back. :)

The pastry might be tasty, but the service is awful. This is or rather was the go-to bakery in my large Italian family for birthday cakes and pastries. There is always a line out the door, even when you order ahead of time, I expect it, and I don't mind waiting. What I don't expect is rudeness when I call. This morning at 10:00 a.m. placed a call to order a birthday cake, was put on hold for 20 minutes and then disconnected. Called back straight away, no answer. I figured I'd give it a little time, so I waited two hours and called again. This time, the phone was answered and I nicely explained that I had called early and was disconnected and that I would like to try again, in response I got a gruff "YA I KNOW THAT'S BECAUSE WE GOTTA LINE OUT DA DOOR!" Listen, dude, your cakes may be good enough for me to wait a little bit in line for but they are NOT good enough to justify the rudeness or the prices you charge. I wasn't complaining that I got disconnected, merely explaining. You are a busy bakery, you know that, it should surprise you, don't be rude to your customers. Never again.

Loved it! Lobster tails, cookies and cupcakes were all superb. The lobster tail easily serves 4 for dessert, and the pastry and cream were both amazing. Service was efficient and friendly. They do fill the cannoli on the spot for you, and I liked them a lot, but Arthur's is still my fave for cannoli. Note: Modern recently switched to cash only, so come prepared.

Best pastries and they are in the suburbs which makes it convenient. Everything is great. You do have to be careful with some of the cookies and pastries. Just ask if they are fresh that day. I have had a couple of bad experiences where the pastries tasted a couple of days old. In Boston, you either prefer mikes or modern, and I have always preferred Modern.
(5)
Adam M.
I was a loyal Mikes customer for years & after being told for months by a friend to try Modern I finally decided to give it a shot. I am officially converted! Good hell, these are the best cannoli's I've ever eaten. The fruit & berry tart's are insanely delicious. Best Boston Cream Pie eclair in the country (I've been around). If you haven't been to Modern Pastry yet (either location) you're wrong. Seriously, stop what your doing & go there now. Btw, after spending some $150 on everything my eyes wanted to eat, the owner came out & have my 3 year old a bumblebee cupcake on the house!

Line was not as long as usual. Ordered one traditional cannoli and a mini, and a couple pieces of chocolate. Wasnt blown away by the cream or the crust after all the reviews that i have read previous to today. I also ordered a cappuccino that was not sweet at all it was so hot i burnt my tounge. The only positive experience was the man who made my cappuccino was very friendly polite and social and very engaging in my italian language. Keep up the good work buddy. Will try Mikes Bakery next time instead.

Hands down the best cannoli I've had in Boston. (Side note: I wonder why many of the Italian food words Americans have adopted are already plural like cannoli (singular-cannolo), panini (singular-panino), biscotti (singular-biscotto). Back to the cannoli: these babies are filled to order with fresh sweet ricotta cream! Great place to grab your favorite Italian baked goods and to order specialty liqueur cakes. I feel like this location is a hidden gem compared to the one in North End. CASH ONLY.

I love Modern, and I love this location since it's removed from the touristy craziness that engulfs North End. The cannolis here are lightyears better than Mike's, as they're filled to order. I've also tried the lobster tail, napolean, nougat, a variety of cookies ( the florentines are sooo good), ricotta pie, gingerbread, and zeppoles. The only things I haven't been as crazy about have been the frosted gingerbread cookies and an orange liquor flavored pastry (blocking on the name). But really, you can't go wrong and the staff is always very friendly and willing to help.

First time I've ever been to Modern and I found it via a random search online. I know of the location in the North End, but had no idea they had this one as well. I ordered a chocolate birthday cake and when I picked it up the next day, it was way bigger than I thought it was going to be. (This was a good thing.) And everyone at the party, including myself thought it was fantastic. I'm glad there was enough for me to take another piece home. Yum.

YUM! Great pastries. I have such a hard time choosing what to get, because everything looks so delicious. I'm not a big cannoli lover, but my bf is and liked the choc dipped w choc chips. I got a red velvet cupcake. It was tasty, but the frosting to cupcake ratio was all wrong. I like frosting w every bite of cupcake, but they only put a circle of frosting in the middle of the cupcake. While the cupcake was moist and good, after I finished the frosting, I still had half a cupcake left, which I ended up throwing out. I've also tried their mini chocolate covered cheesecake. Delicious!

I love two items I love from Modern Pastry: Lunch - Spinach, mushroom calzones are perfect for a rushed lunch Dessert - Ricotta cheese cake ... just unbelievable And of course the simple fact of having a pastry shop within a block from home.

I love Modern's way more than Mike's. Having a location in Medford is even better because you don't have to venture out into the North End for some delicious pastries. Parking is not bad. Sometimes I find some rockstar parking right out front. Cannolis are the best in Boston. And they have amazing Ricotta Pie that they also sell by the slice. Cassata cake is my favorite and they do a great job making it here. Just the right amount of rum and tons of ricotta filling with chocolate chips. Mmmm. I have ordered quite a few birthday cakes from here and everyone has loved it. They have such a variety of cakes to choose from that I always want one of each! Good luck picking because they all sound amazing. You can find a list of flavors with descriptions right on their website.

I've always liked going to the North End to get delicious Italian pastries, but I lack the motivation to travel all of the way into the city just to wait in long lines for sweet confections anymore. So, you can imagine my excitement that Medford Square had it's very own Modern Pastry, just around the corner from my place, and with better prices to boot. The store front has a nice selection of both French and Italian pastries, but on this particular visit I ordered some red velvet cupcakes, chocolate oat cookies, and rainbow cookies for my birthday. The cupcakes were moist and fluffy, and the frosting was rich and sweet...just the way I like them. Although I still love the rainbow cookies from Mike's Pastry better, Modern does make a good version too, covered in chocolate sprinkles. Now all I have to do is try out the cannoli's to see what all of the fuss is about. If you find yourself having some time to lazy about the store, take the opportunity to pull up a chair, get a hot drink, and watch the world go by in the window. It's a nice spot to sit with a friend for a quick breakfast or afternoon treat.

Two Words: LOBSTER TAILS. I'm not much of a dessert person but when it comes to these lobster tails...I'm an addict. My aunt has brought them to many of our holiday gatherings..and I can't help but inhale them!! They are so fluffy, not to sweet & DELICIOUS!

Love love love this place - real old school Italian bakery with a wonderful selection of traditional cookies, cakes and pastries. They also have gluten-free and dairy-free options, which is pretty cool. My favorites are the ricotta pie, the cannoli, the eclair, and the zeppole - fresh, light, and tasty. I've never had anything that was less than delicious. The next time you need to bring dessert to someone's house, go for the ricotta pie - it's an amazing alternative to cheesecake.

Perfect pastries! This place had a huge variety of pastries that I had never seen or heard of previously. I bought a wide variety for my family to try. Deliciousness in every bite! A little pricey, but worth it. They make the cannolis to order. The Medford location was far less crowded than the line that I saw at the Boston location. Street parking is available, or just park in the Medford City Hall parking lot. They take debit cards. (I'm not sure about credit. I didn't try that.)

WOW, What an experience!! I have been here over a million times, from the Medford location to the North End. I've always had a good experience and the staff was always wonderful, even on their busiest times. To me eye contact, respect, and professionalism, is always top three when it comes to customer service. Yesterday I had called to see if they had a particular item; the woman on the phone was SO HELPFUL. She started going over the item describing the different ones they had in house, if not they can get them from the North End. We started chatting about how the item reminded me of my childhood. She then went over something so important, that I had never seen or heard someone from a bakery go over before, "I just want you to know this product does have Almond paste in it, just in case there are any allergies." I was blown away with that. I proceeded to place my order to pick up this morning. This morning I went over to pick up my order and I had again the same experience. Everyone was so friendly. I met "Mr. And Mrs. Modern Pastry" cutest couple ever! They were engaging in conversation making me feel so welcomed. Gave me a sample of the soup of the day because they could tell I was sick. BEST CHILI I've ever had. (I got an order to go it was that good) They should be VERY proud of their staff. I know I am!! Thank you modern you will always get my business

My husband and I used to have a GP that we hated, whose office was in Medford. So we would make a stop at Modern Pastry after every trip to the doctor, which always cheered our spirits. Modern Pastry has great everything, but my favorites are: nougat, zeppole during season, ricotta pie, Russian tea cookies, and surprisingly the cupcakes. I am not a cupcake person, but these are deliciously moist and cake-y. Great service, community atmosphere, and no lines at this location!

The most amazing pastries I have ever had! The lobster tails and cannolis are to die for. This is the same great taste as the Hanover street location without the long line to get the pastries. Highly recommended to anyone with a sweet tooth or anyone who is a fan of Italian bakeries. The Jordan almonds are great for weddings. The parking situation isn't great, but Medford square isn't a bad walk to get there.

Best in Medford and the north end! This place is delicious. Always a great selection of goods, fresh coffee and friendly staff. There are a few high tops to sit and enjoy your meal. Their lobster claw is to die for! Literally the best. It is what we get to celebrate!
Terry S.
(5)Nate G.
YMMV.
(4)Adam G.
I'm just going to go ahead and say it: best cannoli siciliani in the area. The ricotta filling is exceptional. I'd recommend the chocolate dipped as opposed to the chocolate covered. Very friendly staff, too. Would go back.
(5)Hansraj B.
Best Italian pastry shops in Eastern Massachusetts.
(5)Taz S.
(5)Will C.
(5)Deanna D.
(4)Zinah A.
(5)Jeff M.
Just like the North End location but without the line.
(5)Michelle A.
(4)S S.
Nice selection of mouse cake slices, especially the chocolate. Try the pistachio cookies, too--buttery, crunchy, smooth and tasty. Great friendly service too.
(4)Jess K.
(4)Cristina R.
Stay away.
(1)Kim K.
(4)EricaLynn J.
(5)K G.
While it doesn't compare to the famous North End location it still makes some favorites well enough to stop in if I am in the area. It's much smaller then the North End version and obviously parking is a little easier to find here. Staff is very friendly and helpful here so I'll be back!
(3)Carm B.
(5)Anne W.
(2)Timothy L.
Hmm... it seems like everybody is trying to rate the Modern Pastry that's in the North End.
(3)Karyn V.
(5)Michael V.
Prices are very reasonable as well
(5)Cherie C.

(5)Lucy W.
(5)May W.
They make basic, normal-sized cannolis with fresh shells and amazing filling. They also have a bunch of great pastries and breads that I was in carb heaven! A lot less overwhelming than Mike's Pastry.
(4)Christopher M.
(4)Rhea K.
Really liked this place. The cannolis are normal-sized and the filling is very mild; not overly sweet, and has a little tang from the ricotta. Coffees here are also good, and it's usually a little less crowded than Mike's, with a small seating area. Would come back here again.
(5)Alison F.
(5)Phil C.
If you get a cannoli here, go "off menu" and see if they have mascapone cheese filling. It's worth the wait. You'll never go back to ricotta or yellow cream again...
(4)Connie G.
(4)Stephanie S.
(3)Lynne S.
(4)J Z.
I think I can live with that : )
(5)Nicole B.
fake chocolate! nobody likes that!
(1)Julie S.
(5)Cindy H.
(4)Bruno N.
(5)Joanne G.
(3)Lydia S.
(4)A K.
Mike's may be the place for cannolis, but the tarts and variety of other desserts here are amazing. I ordered the berry tart and it was by far one of the best I'd ever had. I loved the selection and wish I had bought more!
(5)Christopher R.
(3)Jason P.
Very good but I prefer Mikes
(4)Mary D.
really nice pastry shop
(5)Joe S.
Cannoli... Cannoli...
(5)Pink G.
(5)Krystal T.
This place is worthy of a 5 star rating. I attest to perfectly made: cannolis, lobster tails (huge), ricotta pies, napoleans & sfogliatella. This is my favorite bakery in the North End, beats the competition by far, with Bovas right behind.
(5)Sara D.
Order the lobster tail, as it is flaky and delicious. And huge... big enough to share, though you'll want to eat it all yourself. It's simply perfect.
(5)Justin Gwailo H.
I ordered the Strawberry Shortcake for my lover's birthday which is Italian sponge cake flavored with rum liquor. Absolutely delish and everyone loved it!!!
(4)marlene a.
Updating because I think I have sampled everything the offer now. Amazing pastry, good prices, freshness is always on point, friendly sevice (some of the niceest people run this place), the most delicious soups on the planet, nice strong coffee. The ONLY bad thing I can say is parking can be differcult at times.
(5)Shelby D.
Amazing.
(5)Natasha C.
The line for this place really is better then the one located on Hanover and it's like a little piece of heaven nestled in Medford. I prefer this location and pastries over Mike's anyday, especially with the line that snakes all around Mike's, this is so much better.
(4)Adam G.
Nice place. cheerful atmosphere, combining old-school authenticity with a hint of Southern European flair. the deserts/pastries in the glass cases looked delicious-and very sweet!
(5)Laura O.
(1)Vanilla P.
Yes the pastries are wonderful - DUH. But the real gems of Modern Pastry are the RICE BALLS. Get them for breakfast, get them for lunch, get them for dinner - EVERY time you see them in the store. They will improve your life 200%.
(5)Corydon S.
(3)Kana O.
(4)Ellen S.
(4)C P.
(4)Chuck D.
The best Italian Bakery possibly in all of the country. Here you will find the best canolis and ricotta pie. Everytime I am home from California this is a must stop. Anyone giving this place less than 4 stars is insane. I give Modern Pastry a 98/100
(5)Devyn S.
(4)B.Kiddo K.
Perfect little sneaky location out of the North end but the sneaky has pretty uch worn off. They have the best italian goodies ever but they move super slow and you def can not "run in" the wait is super long no matter how many people are in there. regardless, the food is yummy
(4)Austin R.
(5)K K.
Three stars for the Pizelles. Negative five stars for the cute mouse behind the counter. I enjoy the wilderness, but not mixed with Pizelles.
(3)P X.
(4)D M.
(4)Cami M.
Incredible cannoli and to-die-for torrone. Thank you to the local gentleman who steered me in the direction of Modern! My next visit to Boston will include as many trips to Modern as I can fit in. Until then, thank heavens they ship!
(5)Lina G.
(3)Bhuvana H.
(4)Anna G.
Chocolate. Torrone. Together at last. Awesome. I've eaten a lot of torrone in Italy and this is right up there with the best. I would highly recommend the nougat at this place.
(5)Al S.
This is the place to get your pastry!
(5)Al A.
best cannoli shell but the filling needs work
(3)Christine P.
(4)F V.
(3)Emily C.
(5)Nicolas O.
If you like sweets and candies, walk no further. Quite the decadent treat. These were an amazing gift from a true kind person. You can't go wrong with Any of the choices but the classic chewy chocolate goodness is hard to resist. Enjoy
(5)Christina O.
Good good good. LOVE their cannoli. I'm definitely a Modern Pastry fan over the, well, other guys. The shell is nice and crispy. Not too thick and slightly flaky. But the filling is just sooooooo good.
(5)Lauren G.
Stupido!
(1)Jim A.
4 stars for going Cash only, but the Lobster Tail pastry is the BEST. Very friendly people and delicious pastries and cookies.
(4)Vivian C.
Cash only.
(3)Iulian T.
The fact that they don't accept credit cards make the whole experience frustrating before you even walk in the store. In 2015 everyday me should be able to use a credit card, because not everyone cary enough cash in the pocket.
(1)Justin P.
(5)Theodore T.
(4)Lisa W.
(4)Tina D.
(1)Karen D.
(4)Mike R.
(5)Adam M.
(5)Luigi P.
(2)Christina H.
CASH ONLY.
(4)M L.
