My wife and I happened to be on vacation as well as being in the area, and though we have been here plenty of times in the past, I will say that if you've ever been to Hugh's on a weekend night, being here during the early afternoon on a weekday is a completely different experience. The place was dead. We had the whole freshly cleaned place to ourselves! We were seated very promptly by our very nice waitress and received our drinks in about 2 minutes. My wife went with an Apple martini as they were out of Mojito mix and I went with a Pale Ale, both very good. We then ordered the loaded nachos with chili of course which were really good and could hold their own against any loaded nachos from any comparable family restaurants we've been to been to, and that's saying a lot. My wife ordered the Crab salad wrap with slaw and I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. Both were fresh and of good portion and quality. The slaw and fries were really tasty, not too salty and tasted as if made fresh and to order. As I stated before, we were virtually alone in the restaurant and the food came out very quickly. Overall, very nice, if not overly fancy and very quiet. We were both very satisfied with the food and the service. Also, nicely air conditioned! And of course, what would a visit to Malden Center be without 3 or 4 Malden Police cars ripping through the square to stop in front of... What appeared to be Sparks which as we all know is known for their expensive wares! But we could have been mistaken! Ahhh, the sights and sounds of Malden in the Summer! As entertaining as any dinner theatre. But, will definitely go again as we who live nearby are likely to do while we're out and about in Malden!

First of all, place me in an Irish bar and I'm happier than a clam. Next, place an Irishman or two or three near me and ..... I've visited Hugh's a few times now (each time I visit Boston I swing out there). I must preface this by saying that hearty food is a must for me, please no light or healthy choices, I have an appetite that needs filling. I've definitely enjoyed breakfast and lunch there. They have an awesome large breakfast, big on the protein, and definitely providing loads of absorbtion if the need arises. My breakfast started out with a lovely cup of Irish tea, then it was followed my an ass-kicking bloody mary. Even with some potatoes, eggs, and bacon in my tummy, I was able to feel the bloody mary working it's way through me. I love that satiated feeling....food coma! On another visit, I had lunch. Some form of a vodka drink accompanied a stuffed burger, please, a juicy burger makes me happy, but a stuffed one - who can I kiss?! I'm a sucker for vodka, bacon, blue cheese, and beef. So, as you can imagine, I was beyond happy! I even heard that at one time they carried Chopin vodka (my favorite)! Darling pub!! The staff there is pretty great, too. The lovely ladies who work the tables were so friendly and attentive, and the bartenders who pour definitely know how to please their patrons. My only hope is to one day check this place out when it is dark. It sounds like the scene is very entertaining. If it is as cool as it was during the day, it must be loads of fun at night!

I've been here many times over the past 5 years and I love the place. The good: The food is pretty good. Nothing exceptional but not inedible either. The brunches there Saturday and Sunday morning and afternoon are very reasonably priced (mimosas for only $3.00!) and well-done. The waiters are always friendly and the service is quick. Also (at the moment) there's a real HOT cute little guy who is sometimes the bartender:) The not too good: I usually like going there alone for dinner or brunch and read a book--but the lighting is so terrible at some of the tables I had to request a different area. (I should point out that they moved me quickly to a much better place) It is a little too loud at times. Early in the day it's OK but late in the day and at night it gets LOUD! They play sports at full volume on three HD big screen TVs. After dark it gets scary. If you're over the age of 30 (I'm 47) you'll feel uncomfortable. The bar is full of 20 somethings in full screaming mode. The girls dress like sluts...this is one of the few places where the guys dress better! There are LOUD arguments or conversations all over the place and I've seen some pretty unpleasant girl fights erupt. Nobody treated me badly or looked at me differently but I was definetely out of place there. The service at the bar can suck too. All in all a good place. It all depends on what you're looking for.

So this pub is the same as the one in Salem . i went there this past Friday and about 2 weeks before as well. The bouncer so they call themselves at O'Neil s i guess had the nerve to check my id like 10 times, not believing it was me. a few weeks ago i recited my whole id and he thought i just memorized it. i was like are you kidding me, so this time both so called bouncers were looking at it and the bouncer actually i should say door man who checks id's lol . looked at me and the id and said don't you have like 14 back up id's my eyes widened and my mouth dropped i was like I'll recite it all over again like i did last time, and still he stood there looking back and forth from me to MY id an i was like listen I'm 24 I'm really not going to make a fake id to come to O'Neil s its not exactly the most jumping place that everybody goes to.but its close and cheap..i couldn't believe this at least 26 year old door man at O'Neil s he really needs to find a new life and not take this job so seriously..

hugh o'neils is the local malden, ma hangout, and i thought it would be good to review it. i always review different restaurants, but forget the ones we take for granted. this is an irish pub, which is located right across from my old workplace, so naturally, it was a big lunch and afterwork hangout. i have to preface this by saying, i've never been a fan of irish pubs. irish is so american, my dislike of american food extends there. still, there were times i had to go to hugh's for lunches. i almost always got the veggie burger. veggie burgers are good, but if you want to make them at home, you have to buy the rolls, the lettuce, tomato, etc., so they're good to get at such places. the veggie burger at hugh's is pretty good, and comes with a blue cheese dressing. you also can get fries with it. i don't eat fries that often; fried food gives me a tummy ache and is really bad for you, but once in a while, it's good to indulge. besides this, there are lots of other foods such as panninis, burgers, salads, specials, and then things like pot pie - all your usual pub food. people generally like it. the place itself is nicer looking than you would expect a malden place to be, and much nicer than the previous malden after work drinking spots. for after work, they have the usual gross looking nacho with everything on it, the fried food, the potato skins, everything that turns my stomach to be near. for those who like such food, it's supposed to be good. they also have a ton of different beers and some mixed drinks (which are weak, but that's on par with a bought drink). prices seem to be on par with similar establishments, and they have things like quiz nites, irish bands playing and maybe even some dancing. they also have cute outdoor seating when it's warm, although you can't drink out there. it's a good place to try.

My sister and I saw this on a certain TV show involving a purple food critic and decided to go there when we wanted to watch the Patriots deal some righteous damage to whatever team showed up that week. It was crowded for the game, but we were escorted to the back and had a nice time. The beer was off the wall amazing, but the food was kind of standard pub grub: good and warm, but nothing to write home about. They also served some free pizza and wings at half-time, so that was awesome.

We came to Malden to see the street performers last Friday and while there thought we would grab a bite at Hugh O'Neil's and sit outside since it was a beautiful night. A pleasant evening all around! We were there early with the kids and took advantage of their happy hour apps and was surprised that they were full sized. We ordered 4 thinking they would be more tapas sized but we were stuffed before our food arrived. The food was good, the server pleasant and we really enjoyed the casual atmosphere. Standard pub fare, good selection of beverages and I'm told they have an amazing Sunday brunch.

First time here tonight and wasn't impressed. I was ignored about anything food wise and the bartender wasn't very personable. It was trivia night but I was just stopping in for a few beers and the C's. At least ask if I wanted to eat smh! Many pubs to choose from and this one was a bad choice.

I usually don't frequent Irish pubs. For me, Hugh O'Neill's is the exception. That's because they're an exceptional bar/ restaurant. They have a constantly rotating selection of craft beer and beer from around the world. The beer prices are slightly higher than they probably should be (that's one of the two reasons I'm not giving it 5 stars), but at the same time, you pay for what you get. I've NEVER been served a skunky or warm beer at this establishment. They clean their lines, and they keep the beer COLD. In my experience, the food has always been good as well. What more could I ask for? Good customer service. In this department they can be hit or miss unfortunately. Most of the bartenders are friendly and accommodating and go above and beyond with customer service, but a few are marginal at best. This place transforms on nights and weekends into a crowded dance bar, similar to what you'd find in Quincy Market. I don't go there at those times, because it's just not my crowd. My experiences here have been on weekdays between the hours of 5-7 pm.

Disclaimer: This is a "homer" review. I live nearby and am a semi-regular, so I felt it was high time to give Hugh's some love. I'll start with the little known fact that Hugh's has a great breakfast on Sundays...it starts at 10am or so... This time of year you can sit outside and get great Irish breakfast, breakfast burritos, omlettes, you name it. I've always had a great time on Sunday mornings here, and it's nice not to have to stand in line for 40 minutes to get some coffee and eggs. The rest of the food is usually really good. The steak tips are reliably delicious and tender, the chowder is just right, and there are always interesting specials. Service can be hit or miss, depending on who you get, but overall the staff is great. Good beer menu, perfect pours, and just the right amount of wood paneling and live music to give that homey feeling. It's also a good size joint, so it's never cramped except on... ...Friday and Saturday nights. From the other reviews it sounds like a hit or miss proposition, but what nightspot isn't? I can (mostly) recall having a blast there with my brother one Saturday evening, drinking a from fresh keg of Paulaner and making the inexplicably wise decision to abandon the car and reach home on foot. We concluded based on this research that Hugh's is not a bad spot for a mini-bender. Taking it all into account, I'm very glad for Hugh O'Neill's...it's one spot that makes Malden feel more like home.

Who doesn't crave good pub food every once in a while? This has started to become a go-to place for my family and me when we want some good comfort food at a REALLY good price. The food isn't outstanding in any way, but it is totally fine for what it purports to be. They also give HUGE pours of wine. The only downside is is that if you go for a meal at an off time, it is still incredibly loud because of the many tvs scattered about. Street parking is really bad at peak hours so you have to drive around quite a bit .

Very nice neighborhood bar with decent food. My favorite thing about O;Neils is that they do not have many taps but they are very well balanced. There's always some imported beer, stout, brown ales, lagers, local beers and not just freaking IPAs and crap .. ups sorry craft beers. I go there for a pint of Guinness or Palm and for irish breakfast. Most of the bartenders are very pleasant and attentive. There's a girl bartender with an irish ? accent she is very very nice and quick. (Sorry didn't catch her name) The only two bad experiences we had there where when we sat down for a meal. In both cases we had the same server Danielle who is absolutely pays no attention to anybody. I ordered salmon omelette with a side of fruit salad, they didn't have salmon ( not a big deal) so I changed my order to a ham and cheese omelette clearly specifying that I will need a toast and not the fruit salad with it. Well guess what? She came over to check how the food was (good) and my husband made a joke here's the dialog - How is the food? - Terrible :) - Great! Do you need anything else? I almost peed my pants!!! She just does not give a heck. But she sure was quick on picking up her tip. I always recommend this bar and we will always go back there, but will try to avoid Danielle. Sorry honey.

Highly underrated brunch. Skip the Sunday morning lines elsewhere and relax here. Very tasty food, not just typical bar grub. Decent craft beer selection, probably best in the immediate area (till Redbones opens anyway). Service can be slow at night. Overall a hidden gem for Malden/Melrose locals.

This restaurant is walking distance from my husband's office, so we've stopped by a few times for dinner. The food is normal bar fare, but I miss the healthy options section of their menu. Monday - Saturday from 4:30 - 7 PM, all appetizers are $3.50. They have different specials on their menu each night. I tried the fried goat cheese salad (on the specials menu) last time I was there, but I do not recommend it and would not order it again.

Hugh's is my favorite local bar. They always have awesome beers on tap, the food is delicious, and the patio is my favorite part!! Something about getting to sit outside and enjoy an ice cold beer just makes life better. The waitresses are pretty awful, so don't expect to get outstanding service here.

This was an awesome place yesterday. Great servicen no BS. Today, they sucked. Valid ID from out of state no drinks for you. Massachusetts establishments like this need to get out of the Dark Ages.

Very appalled that the doormen make up random rules and don't let people in on Friday and Saturday nights for no reason. I have witnessed them tell people they can't get in on multiple occasions, but would let trashy girls in right after. My boyfriend went there after work one night and they told him he wouldn't be allowed in because he had too much to drink, when he didn't have one drink. I confronted the doorman about it, and he said that he made a "mistake" and then let us in.

Its usually ok going here, but fri night.i think ive never seen such ridiculous actions on the bouncers part in my life.A black gentlman dressed average tryed to come in and was turned away because it was REGULARS ONLY NIGHT". thats what they said to him. my mouth dropped. i said somthing and was informed by the door man."owners orders.this poor kid working at the door actually has to turn people away and say that. i was shocked and disgusted by it.he was alone, not looking like a hood.i dont get it. what decade are we in!.is this 1962 mississippi.i know they have a right to refuse anyone, but lord..get a better excuse,by the way im not a regular.i was let in.i give up on this place and so does anyone i talk to when i tell them this one.i pop into almost and know everyone in half the bars in malden.i never seen this kind of thing in the 23 years ive lived here.sad.very sad.

If you're going to be in Malden, this is the perfect place to grab a beer. Monday through Saturday they have happy hour, which offers half price apps ($3.50 on average), and these guys have the best wings I've ever had in my life. Sunday nights around 9:00 they set up a Wii and an X-box 360 and you can choose from a bunch of different games to play with your friends or other patrons. If you don't like video games, they put out some cornhole boards as well. The bouncers are super friendly, and the bar service is quick (although not always super friendly). Definitely worth a try. Get the wings!

Awesome bar. They have live music 2 or 3 nights a week, really good food and a ton of different beers on tap and lots of scotchy scotch scotch. Parking can be a pain but it's the only place I like to go to in Malden.

Excellent atmosphere (including outdoor patio now that the weather is nice!), great burgers, interesting beer list. I go there with friends to down a few drinks, and I go there with my toddler and husband for family-friendly service. A great choice all around!

I and a friend went there on Saturday night, August 16th. we were both very hungry. We had nachos with chlili as an appetizer. My friend had calamari and I had their monster burger. Everything was perfect. The portions were quite large and I had to take leftovers home. I asked for the burger to be "well done", and it was cooked just right. It was also huge, almost like a big meatball. The men's room was REALLY spotless. I (and the friend I was with) work at a small breakfast place down the street from this, and saw some of our customers here, which was nice. I also know how hard it is keeping a bathroom clean when it's so busy. They did a great job. We wil be going back soon. There are restaraunts (literally) all the way up and down Pleasant Street, so to stay in business in such a competitive environment (for so long), they must be doing something right!. As the night progressed, the place filled up quite nicely. The only thing I really didn't care for was the "Live Irish Music". I thought that was a Boston-only thing, but we only had to sit through a half hour of it until the band packed up.

Despite my check in status, I've actually been here a few times now. I will say that for an Irish bar, it's not too shabby. The food is pretty good and the drinks are just as they should be (plentiful and cheap). They may not have every beer in the world, but they definitely keep a good selection of draught beers. The wings are pretty tasty, as is the clam chowder. I had the black pastrami sandwich the other day. The sandwich was pretty tasty, but it was lacking in a plentifully amount of pastrami. If I'm getting a bulky roll with pastrami, the top bun should be falling over. Overall, I was full and happy with it. I will say that the sweet potato fries are some of the best I have ever had. The cooks didn't seem to pay good attention to my buddies black angus burger around lunchtime either. They missed the bacon, extra blue cheese, and didn't cook it correctly, let alone remember to put cheese on it. He said it was very good anyway, but when there are only 4 people in the entire bar at lunch on a Saturday, it shouldn't be that hard to get the job right. I'm keeping this place at 3 stars as it's not exactly a place I would go out of my way to head over to, but if I was in the area I would stop in for a bite and a few beers.

One of the better local pubs around in my humble opinion. The best grilled cheese sandwich ever. Add the applewood bacon and tomato. YUM!

I think I came here once before in a mostly-forgotten memory fogged over by a $120.00 tab at Bukowski's with the inevitable "fighting off a blackout stumble" in a my step and an inexplicable song for more beer in my heart. I vaguely remember enjoying myself, though God knows I could have actually been in a cow pasture swiggin suds in a haystack with Farmer John's cow. . . who knows. Point is that I soberly ambled on in today and sat myself at the bar in some 0ddly familiar surroundings. The bartender was prompt, the smithwick's was tasty and the burger was deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelish (*burp* excuse me!) Now, this wasn't a $25.00 burger with a white truffle aioli and diamond-encrusted fries. It was a soft, chewy, nicely seasons black angus burger with sauteed (but not droopy and watery) mushrooms. You know, good quality beef between two pieces of bread to make you lean back on your barstool and and want to burp the alphabet. What's more, I found the blue collar clientele around me to be charming, and friendly. I even struck up a conversation with a stranger! STRANGER DANGER BE DAMNED! This guy was awesome, and not once did we talk about the red sox. Topics of conversation: good burger, soccer is lame, NFL players are overpaid, Baseball players are worse, Tom Brady needs to shut the fuck up, Tmobile sucks, and you can save your cell phone from drowning by immediately pulling out the battery and covering it in white rice for a few hours. Who knew? So when you're kickin around Malden and think "I want a burger, a beer, and to hang out in a cool atmosphere" think Hugh O'Neill's. I know I do!

I went here maybe 2 times in the last few years. I did not know anything about this place or what kinds of people frequented it because I am not from the area. I have to say the drinks, yes; they were good/ strong like other posters mentioned. The servers/ Bartenders are very nice. The people are pure townie trash- As in; I tell others to not set foot in this place unless they want to listen to the worst/ overzealous Boston accents around. Pretty much all the Everett, Malden and Revere stereotypical people hang out here. On one out of the two occasions I went there was a musical group called Party Train performing. It was the strangest thing I have ever witnessed in a bar- They had this screen where some townie girl danced seductively behind, the singer was dressed in the latest stripper gear as she squawked her way through a set list which included Kesha severely out of tune. Gaggles of guys hang in small groups eyeballing anything that walks into the bar with breasts. The females wear things to show off their beer guts, orange tans, muffin tops and outdated acrylic nails/ chunky highlights- Most often they are heard shouting something at someone for no reason or attempting to start a fight. I don't know what it is with this place but I don't think I will be returning any time soon.

You know you're a townie when.... If you don't want to see everyone you went to high school with, dont go here. If you dont want to see everyone that graduated from your high school 4 years your senior, don't go here. However, if you really don't care and just want to get real drunk and dance with questionable people, definitely come here! All joking aside, O'Neill's is a good time for what it is. My friends and I all agree that you're pretty much destined to be blackout/borderline blackout by the time you leave for the night. And on the plus side, they have a space heater outside which is tremendous when it's blizzarding outside and you're craving nicotine like no other.

This is a gem hidden in Malden!! (mind you it's 2 blocks from the T stop). Hugh O'Neills is a fantastic Irish Pub and Restaurant with authentic Irish food, an Irish owner and Irish staff!! Every night they have something fun going on, their bar is fully stocked with the best selection of alcohol and the beer selection is more than decent. Their food is excellent and their brunch is pretty amazing. They throw great parties (St. Patty's Day!) and somehow the bathrooms are always clean!! On weekends it gets a little packed, but it's completely tolerable. I love Hugh O'Neills!! Stop by for a Guiness and a bite sometime...you won't regret it!

Went here the Saturday before St. Patrick's day. Seemed like a really good night time crowd. You had your groups of friends, and crowds, but everyone seemed to mesh. There was only a couple of sketchy guys lingering around the dance floor. The DJ was good, and place was pretty easy to navigate, even after you've had a few. The bartenders were quick and served up beer like it was their job (oh... it is...) They turn the back half of the place into a dance floor, and like most local places, it doesn't see any action til people get drunker... then you see a bit too much action. Over all an A-OK place and definitely a preferred spot for Malden. I didn't get stabbed and the cop lingering by the front door didn't even seem that intimidating, so I'd go back.

While they have great qulaity food, their service is terrible. Especially at lunch time during the work week!!!!! Generally one waitstaff person on who is slow as hell, and doesn't even speak english. Really hurts their business that they can't turn tables quickly.

  • Monica N.

The waitress was not good... she spilled a drink on me and didn't even apologize. Messed up the drink orders. Response to Shane: I've actually been busy and the mobile version of the Yelp app does not allow for responses to be posted so therefore I have not been able to response to your message. I do not recall her name. It was later in the night (maybe 10-10:30 or so... it was after I had dinner across the street). I can't remember the day but it was a weekday (I'm trying to find when I 'checked-in' to get the date). I'm sure she didn't mean to spill the drink and it was an accident... I doubt anyone would knowingly spill a drink. I'm sure the drink was full and it a bit spilled over the top when she was transferring it from the tray to the table. But the fact is she didn't apologize and when I asked for a napkin I didn't get it until she brought out the drinks for the adjacent table a few minutes later. I've actually forgotten about the incident now since I do not go to that area much. Hopefully this was just a one-time accident. Best, M.

i've been here 3times. First two times were fun had a blast. This is basically a bar you go if your not trying to hit up Boston for the night and you just want to sit back and have all eyes on you. I had a good time bought drinks met the owner left a 15$ tip. My third time wasn't so. I couldn't even get into the damn place. I was told my attire wasn't suitable. Jeans, a Lacoste shirt, belt and nice pair of shoes and was told my attire is toooo baggy ? Meanwhile a party behind comes in with a Fitted, hoody, and pants down to his ankles and is let in. This is when i wasn't happened and said something to the scumbag bouncer who at first looked at my ID and said they're tooooo baggy. This isn't FELT or ROYALE its O'neils. I've been in clubs all over Boston wearing those jeans never had a problem. I haven't gone back but i would like too. Maybe sometime next month. P.S - Yea, they wouldn't let any of my friends in. (3) total. One a Marine who we were taking out.

cant beat .25 cent wings during playoffs, but the wings are tasteless and flavorless. after 3 drinks or so, they start to taste better. but drink prices are reasonable, better then going into boston :) and i was very surprised at the house salad, it was very good, good dressing. i go here all the time for sports games on tv and one time in particular i guess we were forgotten about bc we NEVER got our food. finally 45 minutes later we told them to forget about it bc we werent hungry anymore. they brought out the food 15 minutes later anyway and said it was on the house. good way to keep your patrons, thank you for that. this is true customer service. overall good customer-service, they really do try to please you and help you. the doormen are nice, the waitresses are very nice

This place sucks. The atmosphere is cheezy, and too north shore. If you want to be around good people go somewhere else. All of the douch bags come out to dance and fight with each other here. just stay away, maybe it will close

I used to live down the street from this bar. It's a great spot to bring people as it is often pretty quiet. Their menu changes frequently and the food is pretty decent for bar food. The cocktail menu is also evolving and there are always new things to try. I'm also a giant nerd and really like Celtic music, which they have on Saturday afternoons. I've been for trivia (which is awesome), but they are doing a game night on Sundays, now - RockBand, etc. I'll be checking it out! A great place to chill out.

Welcome to the Bush League. I may have frequented places like this when I was first started to go out, but now that I can tell when a bartender is good or bad, and actually pay attention to who and what is around me... I hate these places. Thankfully there was no cover to get in here, the bouncers were deep in conversation, and less than welcoming. Once inside, we found the group of friends huddled infront of the bar. Two female bartenders stood behind moving around at a fairly fast pace. A few barbacks (perhaps?) slid around the bartenders cleaning things up behind them. With that much activity behind the bar it took a while to grab a beer (of which they had a surprisingly nice selection of beers on tap). It is, apparently the kind of bar that people go up and do shots at the bar, then wait, order another round, then order a drink and walk away. Ahh, grasshopper, you have so much to learn! The DJ sucked. Saturday night is usually a busy night, I'm amazed that they had such a bad dj! I could have done a better job! Better yet, my baby sister with her iPod would have been a better option. This dj had no idea how to mix anything. After a drink each, my boyfriend and I took off. I don't think I've been more glad to leave a bar... This year. This might be somewhere I'd enjoy on a non-holiday Monday night, but the weekend? At 25, I felt waaaaay too old to be there.

This is my favorite pub in the Boston area. They have the best sangria I've ever had, excluding Hotel Marlowe in Cambridge (it's free at 'wine hour' if you stay there). All the apps are also great. (They have Happy Hour.)

On the plus side: Nice fireplace, hardwood, and plenty of TVs (if you like sports with dinner). Their portions were VERY generous and the prices are very good especially considering the amount of food that you get. On the minus side: Even though you get seated quickly, the actual table service takes a while (it was about 15 minutes between sitting down and seeing the waitstaff when the place was near empty). It has a very "town-y feel" where if you aren't already known, you can feel uncomfortable and I was hoping for more of a neighborhood-y feel.

Food here is great. Waitstaff is friendly and outdoor area is great to sit out on warm summer nights. Definitely going back for trivia night sometime soon.

I've discovered that Hugh's is actually a really great place to watch a game with TV's viewable from most areas and a big projector screen opposite the Bar. After having a few different entrees I still think the food is pretty forgettable. And the service, well.. the last time I went we were seated and a waitress brought us our drinks but never returned to take our food order which was pretty bizarre. We flagged down another waitress and she was really nice and comped our drinks so... no biggie. Still A-Ok in my book for a cheap dinner out in Malden.

Went Tuesday for Trivia Night. My first time. I had a club soda with lime followed by a hot coffee (both superb). My friend ordered the onion rings which came in a HUGE, generous basket. They were some of the best onion rings I have ever had. Total YUM. The people playing trivia, the regulars, were friendly and fun. Had an awesome time. Had a taste of a strawberry daquari which was out of this world GOOD. Gotta have me one of those next time... Our waitress was attentive and really nice. Can't wait to go back!

If you like trivia (Stump! Trivia) get your ass in here. Sunday & Monday I believe. Prizes for 1st & 2nd place (usually a gift certificate) And my friends...gift certificates = free beer. You probably won't find me here on a Friday or Saturday night though. Friggin' DANCE PARTY. There's more bumpin' & grindin' going on in here than in an R. Kelly video. It's pretty much a traditional Irish bar. They have bangers and mash, which I'm going to check out next time. They also have Rock Band nights, which I am DYING to check out.

I have to give this place credit for putting on a decent trivia night, as well as decent service. That being said though, I wasn't too impressed with the food: my quesadilla was a little on the dry side, particularly the bread (which felt more crunchy and chewy). Yes, it's not a Mexican place, but it was still a little weird.

Dude, let's do shots bro! You see Jersey Shore last week? Naw, I was wasted Its set up like a traditional irish pub, in that there are separate areas for seating for various size groups, and when it's not packed full, it's easy to sit, drink and converse with friends. It seems like Hugh O'Neills is two different places; slow and quiet during the dinnertime, loud and almost intolerable on weekend nights. It's mostly filled with post-high schoolers who would have been frat boys had they had gone to college and lip glossed gals dressed in black to hide the 25 extra pounds they've put on since turning 21 a month ago. It's not a bad place to go at night if you really really really just want a drink or something because hey, they're open.

Oh Michael m! FIVE stars?! OK listen- if you are heading over to O'Neills- you need to know what you are getting into. This is people watching at its ABSOLUTE finest. I walked in last Friday- pleased to be at an old school joint. Suddenly I heard the battle cry of "THAT'S MYJAAAAM" and was bombarded by a herd of screaming 21 year olds because "single ladies" came on. Apparently there is a new school in town. About an hour later (and some beers)- I got to witness a girl fight near the smoking section, a chick that weighed in over 3 bills telling some guy she knew she was hot, and a drunky mcstumbles asking if this place was called "Paddy's"- where was Paddy's? Can we help her find Paddy's? Are we sure this is not Paddy's? Awesome. The music is loud, the wait for a drink is endless, there is a meat market dance floor in the back, and the clientele is hilarious at best, terrifying at most. I particularly enjoyed some of the wardrobe choices of the young ladies (FYI- if I can see nipple- I'm not sure if its a cry for attention as much as a cry for help). Having said all of that- i was there with some of the best people ever (Michael m included) and had an excellent time. The place is an experience- you will laugh here, you will see hilarious things, you will probably only want to stay 90 minutes tops. It is a gem of malden....whatever that means! :)

The best drinking option in Malden, Massachusetts. Weekends you get the young folks, so avoid it if you're not young, Weeknights you get the afterwork and older crowd looking for a few drinks to unwind in a relatively chill place. If you're young, you probably won't dig the weeknight scene. I went there on Fridays and Saturdays for years, and now I prefer the weeknights. It's pretty straightforward. If you've explored the drinking options in Malden, this is the least likely to get you arrested, beat up, or offered crack.

Nice atmosphere. They do a nice job of keeping it Irish looking. I am usually there at random times during the afternoon and always have a good time. I am told the night life is really good depending on if you go on crazy young girl top 40 dance night or laid back trivia night. I have always had great meals there at reasonable prices. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Good selection of beers on tap. Fun place to watch a game and get some wings.

Can't say I've experience the weekend life of this joint...so this rating is based upon 3 weeknight visits... The first two were over a year ago...it had a great relaxed pub vibe, with plenty of good draft and bottle options...and they have Stump! Trivia on two nights, including one night solely for sports/entertainment trivia...which is what brought me back this past Wednesday, I have no complaints when my glass is full of a good IPA or on a fall night a Shipyard Pumpkinhead, I'm playing a good game of trivia (even though the two of us got whooped), and I'm eating one of the special entrees for the night--a burger appropriately titled the "Crazy Burger"...this thing was not only stuffed with Cheddar Cheese (cool, but nothing crazy), but also stuffed with more meat...more specifically it was stuffed with BBQ ribs...WoW it was good! Definitely looking forward to going back on another Wednesday...hopefully with a couple more people so we don't get beat as badly!

Having lived in Malden since the autumn of 2006, I'll preface this review by saying that the ~ $20 cab fare into the city is a small price to pay for the multitudinous options therein. If you're a young person living in Malden and are looking to tip 'em close to home, O'Neill's is, effectively, the only choice. Not a good one, either. I've seen both the Jekyll and the Hyde of O'Neill's. The sedate weeknights -- frequented on Wednesdays for Stump! trivia -- and the wild weekends amount to two entirely different scenes and experiences. Trivia nights allow me to appreciate well-placed plasma screens and comely waitresses. On the other side, they also expose the sinister menu and dreadful service. Whereas the positives are self-explanatory, I'll carry on about the negatives. I've sampled all about the menu at O'Neill's and can tell you, friends, that there's not one decent eat on the menu. Not even the traditional Irish fare that one would expect to be (at least) serviceable at a pub. I mean, how do you mess up a grilled cheese? As for the service, the waitresses are eye-pleasing (by Malden standards) but dreadfully inattentive and discernibly daft. Expect a long wait before you're offered that refill you so desperately need to wash the fecal taste of beef stew off your palate. Then there's Hyde. Wall-to-wall townies. The dudes continue to work hard to maintain the guns they grew playing high school football and wear two-size-too-small shirts to magnify the results of their labor. The dames get skanked out in their Marshall's-bought finest. I've heard snooty (proper) Bostonians refer to this set as 'bridge and tunnel trash'. That's awfully harsh and terribly impolite but ... I digress. While the place is packed on weekend nights, the bartenders do an admirable job of keeping things moving. An undersized dance floor promotes the undulating of fat Mediterranean girls and uncoordinated white boys. If you think of it as a mating call -- the precursor to intercourse and dystopia-perpetuating reproduction -- it can be riveting to watch. Like watching the National Geographic channel in stunning high-definition. While it remains the most attractive option and features a better crowd than the Dockside or Avenue C (among others), I'll reiterate my introductory advice and beg y'all to cough up the cab fare and to get thee to civilization.

I am on the same page with Rigaudono on the pork strog. Mine wasn't rotten meat, but there was something wrong with the sauce I think. In all fairness, I wasn't feeling great that day to begin with. I have been back since that and have eaten (wouldn't ever order that dish again though) . I had a very good tuna melt two weeks ago. Friends have had good burgers, and Guinness beef stew that is great apparently. Prices are not bad for food or drinks. One friend says there specialty cocktails are good, and I had a vodka soda one night that was nice and boozy, so I got my money's worth definitely Service has been awesome, and it has been lousy. Depends on the waitress. They have trivia Wednesday's and it's all sports and entertainment (8 PM Stump trivia). I don't think I'd go there to get drunk and hit on women, nor would I go out of my way (save for trivia), but if you're in the area with some friends, it's definitely not a bad choice. Update: The Guinness beef stew is actually really good. If you want a snack or a decent app that is different from the usual chicken fingers, wings, etc. go for the stew.

Like this place. Not sure what its like when its crowded but went on a sunday mid day. Bartender was very attentive and polite. Let me taste the bloody mary mix and brought me extra horseradish so I could spice it up (great price too!! $4.00 on sundays gotta love that). I had a cornbeef sandwich. Loved the rye bread, could of put a bit more sauerkraut on it and sliced the corn beef just a tad thinner. The corned beef was very tasty though. Fries were awesome. They must make them there? Something different about them. It was a nice lunch. Looks like quite the bar scene at night..

I am sorry that my review of this place sucks and and I will never give them a dime of my money was not up to par with the sites regulations. Maybe this one will meet the standards. Will see!!. I have read some of them on here and cant say I agree with email I was sent but that is for another day... The service is sloppy and the door men are overated hormone gorilla's who are rude and not very nice! The place lacks any class or great food to ever recommend to anyone to ever eat or drink in this establishment. I was there on a weekday night and found the crowd to be obnoxius and the music to be awful, the Beer to be warm , and the staff to be unfriendly!!! This is MY experience.

  • Ci S.

This place deserves negative stars. I am a disappointed resident. I like to support local establishments, but there are WAY better and more friendly places to go in Malden like fitz and district 7. I went here one night and the aggressiveness of the bouncers made me sick. I saw these poor girls get harassed by the bouncers for just drinking and having fun. Isn't this what bars are about? Don't waste your time here. It's disgusting. Not worth your time. Will NEVER return.

This review is based on the Hugh O'Neils that I see when I go on week nights. I have never been on the weekend so I can really speak for the crowd then. My work pals and I love this place for Trivia on Tuesday nights. There is a great crowd of people, lots of regulars and it is always a good time. Hugh's (yeah, we are on a first name basis) has typical Irish pub food but it is tasty and creative at the same time. I love the grilled salmon and shrimp dinner. I also like that they have a deal on weeknights where all apps are something like $3 before 7pm, which is nice if you are with a group and sharing. There are lots of great beers and cocktails. I have enjoyed many mojitos here. Basically, if you are looking for a laid back weeknight spot I would say give Hugh's a try.

Certainly 1 of the better bars in Malden. They do events and weekly entertainment such as opens mics on Wed and Rockband/Games on Sun. Its whats expected on Fri and Sat which is a very packed bar with music usually with a DJ and dance floor. Very well run good selection of beer on tap and good bartenders that know how to make drinks. Food is normal bar food. It is good reasonable portions.

I feel like I can't write a fair review for a place I've only been to on a weekend night. The crowds are much more annoying, so I'll rate this place solely based on location and service. The bar is a pretty decent size. It has plenty of seats, even when it's crowded so that's a plus because I don't like standing the whole night. The bartenders are friendly and they have a few good beers on tap. Overall, it's a nice alternative to going into Boston.

i recall being here a few times, but not in a few years since i was in college and then just after college. the last time i was here was when i turned 23. The drinks were pretty strong, i guess, because that is about all i recall... lol. but i guess it was a good time.

OK, so I have been to Hugh O'Neiil's quite a few times since I moved to Malden. There's not really a whole lot of nightlife (at least not that I can find) and this place is less than a mile from me. I know that Rain is also in Malden but from what I hear, not so much my scene. Maybe someday I'll go find out for myself. But I digress. Hugh O'Neill's is your typical Irish pub/neighborhood joint. The food is okay, but as a bar I feel like it has so much more potential. The DJ isn't the greatest, the a/c sucks during the summer, and it can take a REALLY long time to get a drink at the bar. And maybe I'm just getting old, but it seems like the average age of a person there on a Friday or Saturday night is like 18. I know they check IDs at the door (I have always gotten carded there) so I am going with the I am just getting old. On the plus side, food and beers are pretty inexpensive and you can always find parking. I just wish they tried a little harder to make it a destination nightlife spot. Malden could really use one. I'm not gonna lie though, I'm sure I'll be back, cause quite frankly, where else am I gonna go?

RIIIIINNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG! That is the sound of the bell that rings when your school day is over. Apparently (all these years later) many peeps in the Everett/Malden and surrounding areas comes to O'Neils. The only thing that is missing is the 'actual" school building. Everything else is there: -drinking-very strong drinks, like when you make them yourself -cat fights -peroxide -skanky dancing -slew of Abercrombie and Arden B. - Uggs in the summer -Tube tops in the winter -The very old principal you had to see every once in a while...ooops, I mean DJ -the cool kids- but they are only really cool right then and there. Not when they walk out the door -bathroom passes or, should I say, frequent bathroom trips -homework-you will be quizzed by your friends on every single thing about that chick you hated all those years back or that guy you had crush on -class clown-bartender -Me...I used to go there a lot, until I realized I was completely over it and would "skip" going -even when all my friends did. -My friends..they don't go there anymore either. They have "graduated" on to bigger and better. -High School reunion: Every Friday night if you are interested

A great Irish pub with good food and friendly staff. There is a nice outside seating area. We had lunch today and enjoyed the beautiful weather. there was no problem getting my haddock without bread or butter.

Great People watching! Hugh O'Neil is a great bar that's 1 part dive, one part Irish pub, one part dance club. An excellent combination. When its busy, (its hit or miss) its a great time. You can see everything from blowouts...to pink corduroy suit jackets. Its pretty cheap and parking is pretty easy. Go for the cheap booze and awesomely bad dressed people. Don't go if your looking to pick someone up, I mean I had to get anti-fungal cream for my hand for leaning on the bar.

I had fun here. It was a cool little place. The staff was O;, nice but not the most attentive. Food was above average and was the beverages. it's a fun place that can be a good option if you live in the area and don't want to go all the way into Boston. it can get a little crowded and douchie on the weekend but that's true of every place in Boston

I work nearby Hugh O'Neill's and have been in several times for lunch and a couple times after work for drinks and appetizers. The food is good and very reasonably priced. Today is St. Patrick's Day so a friend and I went in for lunch - they had a special menu in honor of the holiday with corned beef and cabbage, irish breakfast all day, Guinness beef stew, nice salads and shepherd's pie. I ordered a ceasar salad and the beef stew and the salad was so huge I had to ask to pack the stew to go - the Caesar salad was one of the best I've had - although I would have liked some anchovies on it. The stew smells delectable and came with a nice hunk of Irish soda bread. YUM - my friend had a grilled chicken sandwich with pub fries - she enjoyed it very much. With the Irish music playing in the background and everyone in green to celebrate the day, I was so tempted to order up a Guinness and tell the barmaid to keep 'em coming - it's been a long time since I really celebrated St. Patrick's Day and today I could have extended lunch for a few more hours! Happy St. Patrick's Day!

The food and drinks were alright, and the server was great, but we went for the Tuesday Night trivia and sound was so bad we could barely hear the questions. The man running the trivia was also incredibly obnoxious and inappropriate--he needs to go.

I've been coming here with friends from the North Shore ever since I turned 21, and it has always been good times. The crowd's really nice, and everybody's usually there just to have fun. So no worries about getting into any brawls. There's no cover so that's a definite plus. The bar is usually very accessible. The dance floor is like 10x10, but who really needs a dance floor nowadays? Music is a mixed bag; basically whatevers good nowadays. One thing I promise is that they'll play Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" at least once towards the night. I've never been here when there's daylight out, so can't say much about that... My only complaint is that mixed drinks tends to be rather weak.; in my case, gin and tonics.

  • Josh G.

OK 2.5 stars. It always seems to take longer than it should to get your food here, and if you stay too long it gets a little too Malden, especially on the weekends. Beers are restaurant priced rather than pub priced (add $0.75-$1), although they do have happy hour appetizer deals that aren't too bad. Basically anything fried will do you right.

  • Kate S.

I can't seem to avoid Hugh O'Neils whenever I am back in Boston. I am ashamed even to admit it, but I was taken here straight from the airport a few nights ago. But it's ok, it now seems that a trip home wouldn't be complete without a few drunken nights in Malden to balance out all those cool places closer in town. It's usually a nice scene here with happy friendly people. Pretty much townie but in a mellow Irish pub sort of way. Although, be aware that it unexpectedly turns into a cheesy dance club on the weekends.

  • Mary B.

I used to think Hugh's was great - a relaxing pub (fireplace!) with lots of TVs for sports viewing, decent food and Wachusett Blueberry on tap. In a sea of Malden townie bars, Hugh's stood out. My opinon of Hugh's has gone majorly downhill over the past couple of years. While they have a bit of an odd menu, the food was satisfactory and the staff, especially the waitresses, were incredibly nice and good at what they do. Recently I've had some bad experiences with the (new?) staff where they were either incredibly spacy (it took one waitress 3 attempts and 25 minutes to bring me some oil and vinegar for a salad) or downright rude. I want to come back but I keep getting burned. Oh, and the DJ nights are pretty terrible, but good for a laugh if you're into skank/meathead watching.

I've been going to Oniels for 5 years now and not only is it a great place to shake your tail feather at and get tipsy..the food is delicious! I LOVE calamari and I always try it at every new restaurant I go to and Oniels has the best calamari plate by far..I don't know if its the secret sauce that I've been trying to get the recipe for, for years or the fact that they don't add peppers or tenticles to the dish that makes it so great but I'd definetly recommend it to everyone..and if I'm going there for lunch or dinner I ALWAYS get the steak tip plate with veggies and mashed potatoes..unbelievable..so tender it melts in your mouth!

I have been coming to Hugh O'Neill's for about 5 years now. When I first turned 21 I thought this place was the best! But since I have ventured out a bit more this is the place I turn to when all else fails. They always have great music and the staff are always so nice. My only complaint is that the music is WAY to loud!!! If you are looking to go to a decent bar without the hassle of Boston I would suggest Hugh's!

  • Juli I.

I have only good things to say...this is our favorite neighborhood place to grab an affordable, reliably tasty bite to eat. The happy hour deals don't hurt (though the ghost of my gallbladder would rather we not seek out an excuse to eat so many deep-fried apps in one sitting). And our daughter loves the kids' meals, as well as the many cartoon Guinness posters on the walls. (Don't judge.) I loves me some quality local pub. And whoever chooses the set list or radio station (during lunch/dinner et al...no longer being a single/childless young thing I can't speak to late nights) has fabulous taste.

I've been there for lunch, service is quick, pastrami is really good. I also was there during world cup a few years ago when the were serving breakfast, and showing the cup games. Huge breakfast, more than I like to eat that early. Great beer selection too, love all the woodwork behind the bar. Best Irish bar in Malden Square.

Friday's there are fun! The selection of music is the normal top 40 bullshit with some different stuff, but otherwise it's a good time. Drinks are reasonable, and the crowd is all those people you went to high school with...if you liked them! I always make it a point to pop in there every once in awhile.

O'Neill's, to me at least, feels like a high school reunion you were forced into going to. You know everyone there, but you pretend you don't and they do the same. I'm sure many people from the Everett/Malden area feel the same way. The beer is good there and if you go with a group of friends it gets easier to ignore all those catty girls you hated in high school and those loser boys who are still asking you out eight years later...

This place thinks of itself as a high end boston night club. No sneakers allowed etc. For a pub in Malden Square they are EXTREMELY strict on rules. They kick people out at the drop of a hat. I bought a friend of mine and his date 2 drinks and then they went out on the dance floor to dance. A few minutes later the owner and 2 or 3 bouncers came up to me and told me to take the drinks back from them because they are drunk. I complied with them but it obviously made a scene out of something minor. I thought they should manage themselves better. They need to understand people like to dance and have fun at bars , and not kick people out because of that. The owners said it was bartenders discretion but it seemed as if everyone was redirecting the issue. It could have been an uglier situation but fortunately was not. Although the tip I left the bartenders was pretty ugly. Being a former bartender I think that is pretty scummy to do but I this case it was necessary.

  • Charlie L.

I can't comment on the night scene, since I go mostly during off days/hours. I can say that their Sunday brunch is outstanding. Reasonably priced, the selection is unusual (in a good way). For dinner, I've tried the lamb and the meatloaf entrees - both delivered on my "comfort food" expectations. Bloody Mary's are good, but too salty (think salt lick).

    (4)
  • Justin C.

What else can I say? It's my home town bar. I love it. Even if you've never been, you'll like it. If you're from Malden, then it's a class reunion.

I guess if I can give the number nine ale house 4 stars I can do the same with Hugh Oneills but I'll have to be more specific. For the longest time I've HATED this place, mainly for the clientele of Maldenonites, Melrosians, as many yah doods as one can possibly fit in the place but one night after work everybody wanted to go here and I didn't want to stay home. I'm glad I didn't now that I look back because every Sunday Shaun from nightlygigs.com runs rockband over here which is a good time to be had. I've warmed up to the place now, the bartender Jeff that has worked every Sunday in the past year I've gone is a good guy and has made every drink perfectly and with style. You're still not gonna find me here any other night than Sundays but I'm willing to throw down four stars in favor a pretty cool event. Oh yeah and stop kicking the rockband guys out at 11pm everytime that Sunday ends up bing a long weekend so you can bring in a dj because we all just leave too...

I absolutely love this place, they have the best staff, great food, great music and great times... Hugh ONeils is the cheers bar of its time. Weather you go on a Sunday or Monday to catch the game with friends and get free pizza and wings, play trivia on Tuesday or just Dance the rest of the week, always something happening going on.

We went here last night for dinner and each enjoyed our meal. I opted for the Reuben sandwich and my husband had the shepherd's pie. Both were quite good - the Reuben wasn't "soupy" which was a nice change. The wait staff were phenomenal - we were never "looking" for them. They have trivia night on Tuesdays at 8 which was also fun.

Guys in sunglasses? Being as I am somewhat of a cultural attache when it comes to barhopping, this place was not really on my to-do list, but on my second visit here, I can give this joint a little more respect. I like a variety of different types of bars, even if they're dives, but I typically stay away from the bars that are more appealing to the general public than a specific group. Being as I used to live over in Salem (MA), and was more familiar with the crowd from what we lovingly termed as "Ho Neils", I came in here with a very LOW expectation of what this place must be like. I was figuring ho'ed out girls in tank tops from Tello's trying to balance a martini or even worse, a glass of wine, and guys in Abercrombie polos with a puka shell necklace peering out from the collar. While this was partially accurate, the bar makes up for the crowd with a decent selection of liquor and fast service. I never have to wait more than 30 seconds before someone comes over to take my order. Drinks some strong, and quickly. Which prompts me to finish them rapidly and then return to the bar to blow more of my money on not remembering what I spent that money on. What can I say, alcohol makes me generous. As my headliner mentioned. There was even a guy in sunglasses who introduced himself as "Big Mike". Think Duffman. They have a decent sized dance floor here, and in addition to playing such favorites from Jamn 94.5, they'll play some Dropkick Murphys towards the end of the night which is kind of fun, and makes all the girls feel awkward because they don't know any lyrics outside of Beyonce. There's definitely less of a chance that you're going to get accosted from the backside while you're dancing here than there is at Salem. There's nothing worse than having your friend glare at you to quickly move out of the way before you wind up with some doofus on your back. Guys, there's nothing worse than working your way up to a girl from behind her back. It's sketchy and displays a lack of confidence.

I enjoyed dinner at Hugh O'Neills, even as a vegetarian. There are often very few options for non-meat-eaters at Irish pubs, but this place was pretty good. I had a yummy greasy grilled cheese sandwich - what I was expecting. The fries/chips were not too great, but I'd still go back especially since it's just a few minutes from my house!

I've been in Hughs mostly on Thursday nights and have always had a good time. Its a just a regular bar with friendly locals and staff but man does it get crowded. Once 10'o Clock rolls around the place goes nuts and it turns into one mega party albeit to a Top40 soundtrack which I personally hate! Gorgeous girls abound and its funny to see them get caught in the sights of the guys who are out on the hunt

No big hellos or welcome just a blank stare ...... And oh hi ...... Good luck buddy maybe you should make it an asian place .

My friend Jeff runs a killer acoustic open mic here on Wednesday nights where I occasionally play some guitar. That's how I discovered this local pub. Comfort food and great beer on tap! Love the Guinness Beef Stew. Gimmee a BIG bowl please! Monster Burgers, Thai Steak Tips, Coconut Shrimp, BBQ Pork Pizza to name a few other dishes I've been known to scoff down with a cold brew! Come down on a Wednesday night and hang with all the super cool musicians! That's how I became a "regular" there!

This is your classic Irish Pub. You shall not be disappointed with the food. The crowd here is definitely older and wiser than your normal younger crowd so expect to see things outside of the generation of 1990-milleniums that you just won't get. Come here if you live in Malden and crave some good pub food and drinks.

It is a pub and the food and drinks reflect that. With that said the chicken curry and Shepards pie are my favorite and go to along with the Reuben. The Irish breakfast in the morning is very good to. The whiskey selection is very good as well as the beers they have on draft and are usually rotating them at a good rate to keep it fresh.

Beer selection is great. Food is great. Atmosphere is solid. Weekends have changed since the old days, which is beneficial to everyone but the glow stick dancers. Try the sweet fries. They go perfectly with a top end craft IPA.

I love this place. I'm a long time regular who always sits at the bar. It's rare to find a pub that does pub food so perfectly. Every sandwich and wrap is on point, the fish and chips are solid, and the buffalo wings are bomb. I could easily house twenty of them by myself. The weekend brunch menu is delicious, varied, and available nice and late into the afternoon. All the bartenders are cool and accommodating, and all have an invested knowledge of their diverse and constantly rotating craft brew selection. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best bar in Malden.

Awesome appetizer deals before 7 pm! You pay about $3 per app and you get huge portions, all freshly made. I'd recommend the chicken fingers, which are breaded in-house, the calamari and the chili nachos. Also delicious soups and burgers.

Reliable, dependable, always comfortable.........Hugh O'Neills. Nothing that great, yet nothing terrible. Drinks are good, food is decent....you know what you're getting. Their weekend brunches are pretty good, and my girlfriend absolutely loves their bacon bloody mary's. Place hasn't changed in awhile, and it's usually not dead, yet not packed either. Good,l dependable watering hole in the heart of Malden that will continue to cater to the type of crowd that is no frills about getting a quick drink/meal with no hassle.

Great place to day drink & the food is pretty solid as well. Bartenders are super knowledgeable & engaging & they really know how to take care of their regulars. Tons of beers on tap & the best buffalo wings EVER. & jenga on sunday nights. Need i say more? Bomb ass brunch too. Check it out.

After coming here a few more times, I'm sad to say that wonderful first experience has proved an anomaly. Although my first experience with the food here was surprisingly delicious for pub fare, subsequent visits have been more what one would expect: bland bar bites that are probably more palatable when intoxicated. Also, the slow service I experienced the first time does seem to be the norm. Okay place for a pint, but not if you're looking for a low key but good meal.

After Malden's District 7 shut down, we needed a new place to hang out and meet up with friends, so we tried Hugh O'Neill's, and I have to say, we really like it. I've never really gone there just to eat - we usually go around 6 or 7 for drinks. But, when I have ordered food, it's been good - though nothing out of this world - - pretty typical pub food, I'd say, and decently priced. Actually, they usually have a game day menu if a Boston team is playing in a playoff, and there is a good list of appetizers that are only $3.50 between 5 and 7pm on Monday through Friday. (I'm pretty sure those are the correct times...) The best: they have a great rotating menu of beer. We try something new each time we go. They also have a good selection of whiskeys running about $7 - much cheaper than other places in the area. The staff is friendly and attentive, even though service can be slow sometimes, even when it's not all that busy. Ultimately, it's a nice place to go for drinks and maybe watch a game with friends. And they have trivia each week if you like that.

  • Colin B.

Great if you are a fan of beer; they have a nice rotating tap with a least 15 different beers. The food is cheap ($8-10 for a meal) and what you would expect from an irish pub. They separate themselves with football gameday specials and a myriad of events, including game, trivia, and special music nights.

Ordered a burger here tonight, not really satisfied honestly, but our waitress (Liz??) was really nice and attentive! Specifically, I ordered a medium burger, no cheese, and extra lettuce/tomatoes with a side of fries. Thought the bun was really greasy for a bun and it wasn't that great; it didn't feel dry... but the bun broke down and crumbled, didn't hold itself together really. The burger itself, maybe a little too cooked and became a medium-well. This was dry honestly, even after putting some ketchup still was bland too. It didn't really have much flavor to it. Sure it's burger meat, but I expected some juice! I know it was cooked medium. Fries were meh as well, I didn't expect much but they weren't really crisp, just plain old oven baked fries. The atmosphere is pretty dark! Perfect for watching sport games on whichever night. It's really cozy as well and it feels cabin-y I guess you could say. I remember there being about 4 TV screens and 1 projector! Pretty cool to see whatever's going on. I would come here again but I probably won't want to try the burger again.

I really love going to Hugh O'Neill's. I like the laid back atmosphere. There's live Irish music sometimes. Its a great hangout and sports/divey kind of bar. The food is so much better than I thought it would be when I walked in the first time. My favorite thing to order is the Thai Steak Tip Salad. They also have great appetizers, decent sandwiches, and the one time I had dessert here (a Bailey's inspired cheesecake) it was awesome. To top it off, you would be hard pressed to find a less expensive meal, especially one that matches the caliber of food here.

I've waited a while to review O'Neills because I just wasn't sure how I felt about it. Now that I'm a "regular"- here goes: We come here because they have one of the best beer lists in the area without going into Somerville. In Melrose, Reading, Woburn, Wakefield, etc. most places have Sam, Harpoon, and maybe 1 other local on tap. O'Neills has a great draft list. Unfortunately about 50% of the time I order a beer they are out of what I order. Also, about 50% of the time my beer is kind of warm. Food is so hit or miss. I love crispy sweet potato fries, and O'neills delivers. They have options for vegetarians with some solid salads. I recently got the worst pizza I've ever had in my life there. It was a "greek" pizza. I didn't look at the ingredients before I ordered, and was horrified when it came out with goat cheese instead of feta. They also used this huge GMO Beefsteak tomato and cut it into huge slices that they put on top. The tomato was still cold. The goat cheese was hot. There wasn't any sauce so there was nothing to hold the toppings on. And, it tasted like cardboard. So, don't get the greek pizza. I like coming here for brunch or after work drinks. On Friday/Saturday nights it turns into kind of a douche bar with bouncers and all. I've seen quite a few fights and people getting kicked out. Not my scene. Prices are great. Just don't get the greek pizza.

Great place! Food is awesome, quality beers on tap and fun environment! Can't go wrong with much on the menu as it is typical bar food but to say it's nothing then spectacular would really not give it the credit due. This place is an awesome establishment to go with a team to watch a game or as me and my soccer buddies do, go there for a match here and there in the fall.

  • David E.

Ok I am probably done with this place. I have had really poor wait service three times now, and that is enough. Again this is nothing to do with the actual food, which is very good,. It's all about the crappy service, The night I went the place was busy but not full. I ordered a burger and chips with a cup of chowder to start. The chowder came out with the burger. This is the third time that a server at Hugh O'neill's has done this. It is service 101 from any dive to a **** Restaurant that the soup comes out before the meal. Hughes has really good chowder too, but I was not going to eat it while my burger got cold and the chips wilted on the plate. I told this to the guy who brought the food, his response was to say "Yeah don't know why that happened" and he walked away. When I flagged down the waitress who took my order she did not even apologize, she just took the chowder and said she put the order in right. Strike 3 came when I ordered a Godfather. I told the waitress light on the ice. What I got was a glass full and I mean Full of ice and a pretty well made drink. Again I got no apology from anyone. At least they knew enough to take the chowder off my bill. There are places in and around Malden with really good bar food, and much better service of that food. Hugh O'neill's just isn't worth it. What good is having excellent food if the wait staff can't serve it correctly?

This place is a good irish pub. Other places call themselves an Irish pub, but this looks more authentic. Some good brews on tap here. It doesn't have the selection of other places, but it is good nonetheless. The menu is typical irish pub food. I got the clam chowder here once and it was alright, but it had a little bit of an aftertaste for some reason. There is a decent crowd here on a Saturday night with some good looking women. I read a review that says there are a lot fights here, but this place has plenty of security. The place is worth checking out. I like the size of the establishment most of all. If you can get here before it becomes too crowded, you will probably have a good time.

Great location. Parking was never a problem the few times I went. Great craft beer selection. Discovered Boulevard Tank 7 my new favorite beer. Both imports and domestics on their beer list. I have had fish and chips which was good, Guiness beef stew which I didn't care for, and a salad with chicken which was good. Their buffalo wings were so hot one person in our party couldn't eat them and another could eat them but complained about how bad their mouth was on fire afterwards. The live music on Saturday is great. Very talented musicians. A good local pub. Great place to chill and have a drink and a bite. Food hit or miss but stick with fish and chips and you are good. By the way, don't go if you are in a rush. Took a long time for food to come and took an eternity to get the waitress's attention for the check on more than one occasion.

I find it unbelievably frustrating to eat at a restaurant that messes up my order every time. In the last few weeks, I've eaten here twice (trying it out again after 2 year boycott due to consistently bad service and bad food). I ordered a crispy chicken wrap with honey barbecue sauce instead of mayo. I got honey mustard instead, which I have a true distaste for. Honestly, it'd have been fine if the waitress said, "i'm sorry, I heard you wrong, I'll get you a new one," but she basically argued with me about what she thought was my error. I'd never order honey mustard, because I find it repulsive. You wrote it down wrong. That's fine, it was a mistake - but fix it! I was nice about it - huge smile, good attitude, apologetic, and still I was blamed for her error and she ignored us the rest of the night and slammed plates and glasses down every time she was at our table. Today I ordered the same thing for lunch, and they forgot the honey barbecue altogether. No one came back to ask how things were, and when anyone at my table asked for anything else, it took 10 minutes for them to come back (and even then, things would be missing). I had to ask 4 separate times for my salad dressing. My friends were almost finished eating when I got what I needed. Hugh's is frustrating. Some staff members are nice, some are awful and rude. Sometimes the food tastes good, but sometimes you order the exact same thing and it's disgusting. Even the salad dressing. Occasionally it's watery and you can tell it's been made from a powdered mix with watery sour cream or mayo. You can't trust the food here, it's inconsistent. So even if it's great one day, it's probably going to be disgusting the next day, and that means this is a place I will not want to eat in the future. I'm stuck in this neighborhood due to work, but anytime I can sway my friends to go elsewhere next time we do lunch, I will.

Pretty standard Irish pub. The food is nothing to write home about, as most of it is deep fried, probably previously frozen. Stay away from the cocktails and order one of the many beers they have on tap and in bottles. I do love the interior. It's a big place with lots of seating. The bar tender was a little too attentive. It was difficult to carry on a conversation with him coming over 8,000 times to bring ketchup or napkins or silverware or more water or ask us if we needed anything. It was over the top.

This is a cheap and low key spot to grab lunch in the Malden Sq. area. Ordered lunch today and got a BLT with chips for $4.99 plus tax. That's cheaper than a value meal at McDonalds! And it was certainly higher quality. BLT was good, and not skimpy on the bacon. The chips are delicious. They must make their own, because these were thick cut and crispy. I will definitely return.

Hugh's is a solid go-to for a respectable Irish pub that you don't need to venture into town to enjoy (not that heading to Boston is much of an ordeal). I'd say that based solely on food quality this would have been a 3 star review; I've never been wowed by anything I've eaten here. The amenities push it into the 4 star category. *Note - this review is framed by the fact that Hugh's is located in Malden. If this were a review of the same exact type of pub in Boston, it would be worth 3 stars. Hugh's has outdoor seating in the summer, which is a plus no matter what city you're in, a large, inviting, interior space, football deals ($.40 wings and a $5 gameday menu, in addition to free pizza and wings at halftime during Pats games), and a great beer list. Not having to invest more than a 5 minute drive for a Widmer Black IPA on draught is a win, in my book. If you're in the Malden area and need a local go-to for good beer and a comfortable place to hang out, you could do a lot worse. I mean that.

  • Jason B.

They do good work here. The things they get right here balance well the shortcomings they have. Options for evening and weekend funtime in Malden are somewhat few and far between. Hugh O'Neill's has a nightly lineup of fun events like trivia, videogame nights, acoustic music and the like, which can be a lot of fun. Their weekend brunch is pretty nice, and with outdoor seating and a very decent Irish breakfast, it's a nice choice if you're in the area. The beer selection is excellent, with some traditional offerings (Guinness, Anheuser-Busch Extruded Product, etc.) balanced well with more niche brews (Widmer seaosonal, TANK Farmhouse Ale, etc.). They are obsessive about cleaning their lines, and do so on a weekly basis, regardless of volume. The minus one star: The bartenders and waitresses can, on occasion, be neglectful. I've experienced it on more than one occasion, making it more than just a one- or two-off. The place turns into insane bro-town on Saturday nights (and most Fridays, unfortunately) making it almost completely intolerable.

  • Alana F.

First things first: my stars are heavily influenced, not by Venus or Mercury's retrograde, but by location. Hugh's is in Malden. Now that we've gotten past that, Hugh's has figured some things out REAL well: there is outside seating. Win. You can get lunch for $6. Win. Need I say more? Good, because there's really not much more to say. The wraps are good. The fries/chips/sweet potato fries are good (because they're fried and therefore very hard to make un-good). If you go with more than four people, expect your food to take more than 10 minutes. Other people knock them for this, but, really, they're a bar and we should expect them to have a slightly slacking kitchen. Hopefully, the cooks are well onto their third beer by the time the business casuals roll in around noon thirty. Oh, there is one last thing that every fellow Malden-luncher should take note of: they have lunch stamp cards. Yup. Like a coffee shop. This bar has some identity issues, but they work out in our favor. So, every sixth meal is free. That's right: not every tenth or twentieth. It's enticing. It's the time when we should all stray from the 6 buck wrap and move on to the taco salad. I mean, it comes in an edible tortilla bowl. Next thing you know, the fork will be tortilla, too.

In response to the Shane the owner... If you want to be on my list of a GO TO places then Heineken Light is a MUST HAVE! I don't drink bourbon, scotch or whiskey and I don't drink drinks that have fruit or umbrella's in them. It's fine if Heineken Light wasn't a top seller at your establishment and you fazed it out. That is my drink of choice and I will go to those establishments that carry it like across the street at All Seasons Table. YUM! Trivia night was very difficult to hear and understand. The man's deep voice did not carry over well to the front of the bar where we and many other trivia patrons were. There was also a trivia question he asked that he did not know the answer to and gave everyone the points. Wth? My team knew the answer so we missed out gaining points ahead of other teams. Asking for water I know can be a pain for busy waitstaff. But having to go up to the bar and ask for water because the server never brought it then having the bartender give you a hard time just adds to the problem. The waitress was pleasant but not able to keep up with the demand of the "strong elbowed" people I was with. They in turn acted somewhat ignorant not getting their libations as fast as they wanted. So the waitress gets a pass for this one. I don't believe in mistreating any service oriented employee. It's a tough enough job already...

Not much to add from my last review (back in 2011), but I really like this place and they've always treated me well, so I increased it from 4-to-5 stars, and thought I'd give my post a bump!

Hugh O'neills is located in the downtown district of Malden. The decor is that of your typical pub. ( nothing exciting ) The appitizer menu is typical of pubs, with quesadilla, wings, etc The main menu has an array of what I thought were strange items, from hawaiian pizza that had chicken and bacon on it, to a meatloaf pannini. I had your typical cheeseburger club. I ordered this cooked medium and it was served well done, although the burger was still very good. My wife ordered a chicken, tomato, mozzarella and basil wrap. It was presented nicely. The wrap was good but the sweet potato fries that came with the wrap were tastless. The service seemed to be rushed. The waitress was frequently asking if we were done, even though the place was empty.

  • Melissa K.

I have to agree with some of the other reviewers. This place is hit or miss. If they are empty at lunch, I get served quickly and the food is usually fine. Today, they were a little busy (not packed, mind you, just a little busy). Most of the people there are eating lunch during the work day, so you'd think this place would be used to quickly serving people. First, no came for 20 min for a drink order or to just take my order. I finally got someone to my table and they took my order (now a take-out because I had to go back to work). It took another 20-30 min to come back with a wrap and a side salad and the waitress says, you're the one with the sandwich, and I say, you mean the crispy chicken wrap? yes. then yes. I practically had to throw my credit card at her to get her to ring it up immediately...that took another 5 minutes. Well, I should have checked my order while I was waiting because I got back to the office and guess what? Wrong order. Different wrap, terrible chips (really really bad) and its all a little damp because it was probably sitting on the counter for 10 minutes. There aren't a lot of places in Malden to eat...now I have one less. Blah.

They have a chill atmosphere, good/cheap food, decent drinks, and events happening every night of the week. I was here for trivia on Tuesday and I look forward to coming back on a Sunday to play rock-band and some board games.

I've never been disappointed with Hugh O'Neils. Great food and wonderful cocktails. We go often for brunch on Sunday. The food is terrific and there's never a wait for a table.

Stopped in for lunch on a Friday afternoon. Service was excellent and food came out fast. I could not ask for anything more. I have eaten here a few times in the past and everything is consistent. My recommendations are the curry fries or crispy chicken wrap. It is all basic pub food, but it is done right!

  • Virgnia H.

The only reason I'm giving this place two stars is because its is super cute and trivia is super fun and they have great beer. The food is inedible and disgusting beyond. AVOID eating there! Not even the fries are good!

Was watching Phantom Gourmet and they said Hugh O'Neil's has the best steak tips and the best Fish and Chips - had to try it......the worst steak tips ever - they were floating in gravy that tasted awful - the fish was good - but the portion was very small....plate was covered with french fries - just really disappointed.

I like this bar. I like the beer too. The food is great for a bar. I read some reviews that the "locals" are terrible, but I disagree as I live here and I do understand the people, considering I'm not from New England. The accent isn't so bad nor offensive. It's Boston and it's local. I'm fine with it. The music is alright. There was a band I saw once and haven't seen since called Slow Boat Home. I really liked this kind of Blues music. It was great and I hope they come back I haven't seen them on the calendar.

I often find my myself in Malden, more now since my office moved here. O'Neill's is my favorite after work place. Good food and good drinks. The perfect place for an after work bitch session (not that the co-workers and I EVER do such a thing). Lucky for me I am usually here on a weekday night (too late) since it seems that the weekend crowd is made of all the things I hate. And the last thing I want is to hate this place.

  • Beans B.

Very nice selection of beers, both bottled and on tap. Their yummy brunch menu goes nice and late. Mmm, eggs and alcohol. The cheap and tasty grilled cheese, with tomato and maybe a side salad instead of fries, is a great meal to soak up a few beers and not feel too terrible about later. I do wish the veggie burger could be a less doughy experience, maybe toast the bun or grill the burger longer to get some crispy going? It's not terrible by any means though. On the regular rotation!

I really like to go to Hugh O'Neill's after a long and stressful day of work. The music acts aren't really top notch but with no cover I have to admit it is great to get some live entertainment on a Wednesday night. Service at the bar is as excellent as their tap selection (I recommend 312 or Kona Brown) and they have a bar menu until midnight. I can not say I have tried the bar menu yet.

    (4)
  • Aubrey P.

The bar itself is dark and noisy. Large and beautiful woodwork but often hard to see people and such. The beers are always tasty and the bar tenders always know what they are talking about. My boyfriend and i got a cert for food and tried it out. It was great. The nachos and wings and burgers. They usually have trivia or live music or something going on.

I only go to O'Neill's if it's a Sunday and you can play Rockband, so I'll base my review and my rating on a Sunday night adventure. I love it!!! Sunday's are usually on the calmer, less crowded side and the service is great. The bartender is super nice and does a great job. If you're looking for something to do, you have any interest in Rockband and it's a Sunday...come on down!!!

In an awesome twist, the owner of Hugh O'Neill's messaged me to talk more about my experience. I really appreciate people who understand the power of customer service. His reaching out alone merits another trip to Hugh O'Neill's. There will certainly be a review of something else there in the near future.
