So not good.. overpriced and lacking any sort of authenticity and flavor.

Me and my family went there for lunch. it was a good environment and it was really quiet. #1 - they offer great combo plates for those who cannot decide what they want at that moment - they're a perfect size and give you the best of many dishes. #2 - the sandwiches (in this case the turkey avocado) was delicious and it tasted fresh. it also has extremely soft bread which was a huge plus. #3 - the arroz con pollo was delicious as well and they weren't skimpy at all with the chicken nor the vegetables. #4 - the enchiladas --personally I am gluten intolerant and they had many options of food with corn tortillas instead of wheat and they were very very tasty. the portion sizes are perfect and none of us left unsatisfied.

A friend and I were sick of cabin fever and decided to venture out for dinner. We ended up here. Decor is super kitschy/tacky. Definitely not an "authentic" Mexican restaurant. Food was decent. Chips were warm but totally could've been saltier. Salsa was very watery and hard to hold on a chip. Guac was good, fresh, but the portion for 8 bucks left a bit to be desired. I got a combo meal with a burrito and a chimichanga. Both were pretty good. Rice was cold. Beans were a bit mushy. My friend ordered a fajita. Seemed all right. Drinks were great. Nice kick of tequila in my margaritas, friend enjoyed her sangria. Was a little weird to see them come out of the basement with drinks (I guess the bar is downstairs). Service was uneven. Manager was running around asking everyone what they needed although our waiter was very good and had already taken care of things. Food came out separately. My entree came out. Then my friend's plate came with rice, beans, sour cream, etc. I think they forgot to make her fajita because that took about 10 minutes more. My food was cold by the time the rest of her meal arrived. We didn't try the desserts because we had booze instead, but they looked incredible on the tables nearby. For two entrees, guac and 6 drinks the bill was about 80 bucks before tip. Not too high and not too low. Maybe I'd go back again for the drinks, and the fact they have parking-- which is a must considering how much effing snow we've gotten over the last few weeks.

Very good food, good (not watered down!) drinks, variable service. Some servers are great and some (OK, just one guy in particular) are downright surly. This is our reliable standby for lunches and dinners out, birthdays, etc. I recommend the Cadillac margarita, Blackjack margarita, enchiladas Mazatlan, and spinach enchiladas. Yum!

We've been eating here since they opened the Lex. location. It used to be very good. But, lately things are slipping. Poor service, cold entrees, and a leaky ceiling just to name a few problems experienced lately. I hope they can pull it back together. It's not like there is a shortage of good mex. food in Boston anymore.

First let me start with the service. The manager (abruptly) showed us to our table where we proceeded to wait at length for drinks order. After 20 minutes I flagged down a waiter for some water. Chips and salsa were so/so. Salsa was watery and flavorless. Finally some drinks came our way with the margarita being pretty good with nice tequila flavor without that overly sweet taste when some overuse the mix. Food came out with 3 dishes. We waited another 5 minutes before we finally got the next plate. My food was lukewarm. I got the Atlantic burrito. It came with decried beans and a small side of avocado, lettuce and rice. For approximately $14 it was decent but not overwhelming. Others had a similar experience. I will continue to go visit other Mexican restaurants in the area as this one did not get voted as a "keeper."

This is my absolute favorite Mexican restaurant. It might be my favorite restaurant, period. I try to go at least once a month (for awhile I was even going every week). The food is always fast, fresh, and delicious. The guacamole and queso are both amazing (and way cheaper than you'll find anywhere else). I usually get the chicken fajitas, which are by far the best fajitas I've ever had. The chicken is delicious, moist, flavorful, and plentiful. Sometimes I mix it up and get the steak or combo fajitas - the steak is equally delicious and tender (I'm just more of a chicken person). The staff is helpful and friendly, and always remembers their regulars. Our waitress always knows to add extra chocolate sauce to my sister's fried ice cream without even having to ask! All in all, I'll keep coming back here because every time I come I leave happy and stuffed.

We came here for dinner with friends last Friday night and I thought it was pretty good. Service was prompt, polite, and actually quite cheerful. Their menu was pretty standard so we chose items that we normally would not find at our usual fast food Mexican style place. The portions were generous and our table was soon filled with plates of food. The taste and texture of the food was good. I liked the way their steak strips were made and their shredded beef was good too.

My husband & I have been coming here for years! We've always had great service, excellent food, margaritas, and fill it to the rim house wines! So it's really surprising when I read some of these reviews. I think we've ordered pretty much everything in the menu, but some of our favorites are carne asada, enchiladas mazatlan, enchiladas trio, and fish tacos. For drinks he likes their Cadillac margaritas and I get the pinot grigio (it's cheap and like I said earlier, they really fill your glasses up!) Service is always consistently great, and we love it when Ramone is in the house. Thursday nights they have Mariachi bands and it's great entertainment while you're having dinner because they come around the tables. Aside from the great service and awesome food, the price is just right. And for those reviewers that say it's not authentic Mexican food, are you kidding me? No, it's not fancy Mexican cuisines, but it's authentic Mexican food.

Very large portions, ingredients seemed fresh. So far, this place is the closest to the typical family-run Mexican restaurants we would frequent when we lived in the Houston, TX area. Very representative of Mexican-American food IMHO. Extra points because they don't over-sweeten their food, they understand seasoning, and even the refried beans and Mexican rice were tasty and well prepared. We'll try it again without hesitation.

Ever since the new manager came along, we will not be going back. Unfortunately, he is hostile and rude. He can't be bothered with anyone and tries to rush you. I will miss it here because I loved the food and the other staff. However, because of the horrible treatment of the manager I will be making the longer drive to Woburn.

I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food but my family is. Even though I generally don't eat Mexican food when I do eat it, I eat it here. I have one or two dishes I like and am never disappointed. The wait staff is friendly but I haven seen my favorite waiter, Johnny in a while

I had high hopes for this place after my friend raved about it as being the best (or one of the best) and most authentic Mexican restaurants that he's ever tasted. I was excited to try it as I, too, had recently experienced the best and most authentic Mexican restaurant that I ever tasted. See my review on 'Tu Y Yo' in Somerville. I was sorely disappointed as soon as I took a look at the menu. I didn't even have to read it; just glancing at it, I knew - this was your typical standard americanized Mexican fare that you can get anywhere - you might as well go to 'The Border Cafe'. By the time I opened the menu, we had already been seated for about 15 minutes chatting away so it was too late, in my opinion, to back out. I knew I could've looked at the menu beforehand, but I was easily won over by my friend's raving review that I didn't even think to do that. If you like run-of-the-mill Mexican food, then this place won't disappoint you, but if you're expecting an authentic meal, go elsewhere. I highly recommend 'Tu Y Yo' if you're in Somerville.

I recently moved to Arlington and went here for lunch. The prices were fair and the food was all above average. The outstanding feature of my lunch was the Chile Relleno. My companion got the grilled chicken fajita, which was more flavorful and less greasy than we have come to expect in the greater Boston area Mexican restaurant scene. We will definitely be back for more!

Ok, I don't even know where to start. My boyfriend and I walked in... Place looked sketchy from the outside but I'm not one to judge a book by its cover (their Google reviews were 4 stars). Took quite a while for our sodas to come out, watery as heck.. Even more so than their salsa. We get our plates and good god, I can't even say how bad I felt looking at my boyfriend's face of disappointment. This place is just awful, everything from slow service to food. They weren't even busy and we still had to wait so long for service. The 1 star I am giving is mainly because i can't put 0 stars, this will be for the waiter who seemed nice. This place honestly needs to be shut down, I don't even know how they can keep open with their lack of business and such crappy food. I will never return to their chains, ever again. Even if the world ended and this was the only place left, never !!!!!

If you don't have a BOGO coupon for Ixtapa, you're not trying. If you haven't used the BOGO coupon, you're missing out. HUGE portions, chips you could eat as a meal on their own, and margaritas to boot. This would be my favorite Mexican place in the area if it were just ... a little more in my area. But it's hard to fault them too much for the location that's no doubt keeping the prices reasonable and the portions large. Sometimes we order take out from Ixtapa and each meal comes in a giant platter large enough to feed 4. Very tasty.

It's one of the few places in the area that serves authentic Mexican food. I've only been here for lunch, service is lacking but the food is good. Since I've only been here for lunch with a friend the place is usually pretty quiet, maybe 6 other people dining. I've tried several dishes and all have been delicious, can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Prices are pretty cheap as expected but let's be honest no one goes here for the decor and service it's strictly for food.

The staff are very friendly, but the food was a mess. The shrimp ixtapa was a strewn hodge lodge of watery vegetables, tasteless shrimp and lettuce ($16), the steak dish was shreds of chewy beef ends, and the food was generally tasteless. Unappetizing and bland.

I have been dining at Ixtapa on the Lexington/Arlington border for 5 yeas. Definitely the best hard shell chicken tacos in Greater Boston. Nice margaritas and beer too. And the complementary chips and salsa is nice and the food arrives quickly. Try the in house habenero hot sauce if you like good and hot. And the refried beans are nice and velvety. Give Ixtapa a try. Good luncheon specials too.

My boyfriend and I love this place. This is a regular in our dinner out restaurant rotation! There is hardly ever a wait to get a table. The food is always great, comes out quick and hot. I firmly believe the chips and salsa are by far the best around, and I'm somewhat of a chips and salsa connoisseur. The service is always polite and friendly. Also have some of the best margaritas around...must try the Blue Moonlight (delicious).

We've enjoyed Ixtapa in the past, but won't be back after our experience yesterday. It's gone considerably down hill in the past year or two. First, it isn't clean. Second, the service was terrible (abrupt and clearly they were understaffed) and the food took 40 minutes to arrive at the table. Third, the food was a real turnoff when it arrived a the table. I had the Shrimp Ixtapa. It looked like a mess of food and tasted worse (think hot, soggy iceburg lettuce, overcooked green peppers, and a big blop of sour cream in the middle), I ate a few bites and then put my fork down for good. We didn't eat the rest of the day not because we were full, but because we were so turned off. Won't be back.

I go back and forth between 3 and 4. It is a great place to bring kids and have a couple yummy margaritas. The food is pretty standard. A big step above Taco Bell but not as good as other mexican restaurnts I've been to. If you are in town and hungry for some pretty tasty mexican though, I would recommend it. The prices are pretty good, and again, they make a solid margarita. Check it out

Went there recently for a friend's birthday. There were nine of us, total. The waiter seemed to make a point of ignoring us and I had to flag him down a few times after he had breezed past our table without stopping by for more than 15 minutes. Perhaps six tables in the restaurant were occupied. When I told the waiter it was my friend's birthday, he looked flummoxed and said, "I'll get her some fried ice cream," and he did just that. He plopped down the fried ice cream in front of my friend and hurried off on his way to ignoring us for another 10 minutes. Just a few minutes before, in the same restaurant, at another server's table, there was a whole song, a celebratory sombrero, and even a candle in the dessert. I had to go and retrieve a celebratory sombrero on my own from the front of the restaurant for my friend. All at the table agreed that the chips were stale. Maybe this place was great once, but it's clearly not trying anymore. If you go to this place for your birthday, I highly recommend bringing your own celebratory sombrero, as it's certainly not guaranteed that they'll give you one to wear.

So Im a Major Mexican Fan (East Coast Mexican - I dont know if you can consider that "Real"), we went to Ixtapa for a Work Lunch & I was suprised it was actually decent... and they gave us Free T-shirts". The queso was to die for (Seriously)... and the chips were replaced maybe every 2 minutes (No Exaggeration). Some friends had drinks & they said they were good... I am partial to the Borders Enchiladas, but they were good here... The Guac was a let down, Thankfully the Queso was good... The chips needed more salt also...

We call this the Kiddo Cantina, because we like taking our kiddo there. And so does everyone else, though I don't want to discourage more adult parties from visiting. Do not fear, families tend to eat early. That said, this is New England Mex at it's most predictable. The most surprising thing on the menu is the nachos, which aren't that great. Surprise! Actually, a bigger surprise: the Thursday nite mariachi is awesome. Foodwise, pretty much everything we've had is flavorful, hot, satisfying and a reasonable bargain. I like the fish tacos best - the crema delivers a fine peppery kick. The guacamole is priced right and is a simple mix of avocado, tomato and onion. When I learned that this place is run by the same folks as the Woburn Ixtapa, I wasn't surprised. The margaritas are good, and the staff is friendly and on top of their game. Look for coupons and you've got yourself a 4-star deal.

We frequently meet friends here for dinner and always have a great time. There are chips and salsa on the table practically as soon as you sit down, which is a great way to start any meal! We have consistently had awesome service here, and always feel welcome when we arrive! Things not to miss: any of the margaritas, the guac and the queso --- you will not find better queso!! One of my favorite parts of going :) The staff is very accommodating and will go out of their way to make sure you have just what you want (within reason, of course!) if you don't see anything you're in the mood for on the menu. We were just there this past Sunday and had a fantastic meal. The restaurant is always full of families, couples and friends and that is a great testament to the service, the food and the restaurant itself! If you haven't been before, give them a try!

We came to Ixtapa because we were visiting friends in Lexington, and we are always on the lookout for good Mexican food. I purchased a Groupon after reading favorable reviews on Yelp, which I totally agree with. Ixtapa is very unpretentious, family run restaurant. 1. We always get a table quickly. The waitress was very attentive and interactive, and our waters were filled continuously. 2. I always enjoy the salsa and chips that start the meal -- my husband thinks its a bit watered down, but I actually like my salsa a bit thinner. It's not very spicy, so I asked for some hot sauce and they brought some really great habenero sauce that had a beautiful orange color -- just a few drops made all the difference in the salsa. I also ate the habanero sauce with my meal. 3. We loved the nachos supreme. They make it vegetarian at our request by omitting the meat. I also love the generous portions of cheese, tomatoes, and huge dollops of guacamole and sour cream they put on the nachos. 4. My husband and I always share one of their mix and match platters with three options -- usually it's a chimichanga, burrito, and enchilada, which they fill with either cheese or beans and serve with plenty of tomatos, lettuce, rice, and beans. We made the mistake the first time of ordering separate platters and quickly realized that we could just share a large plate and both of us would be very full. A previous post stated that the food is not spicy and I would agree with that, but it is easily rectified by adding the habenero sauce. I think you can ask for your dish to be made more spicy as well, so maybe I'll try that next time. 5. The churros are good but are a bit heavy. The ice cream and chocolate sauce it comes with is delicious. The value is good and having eaten Mexican food in Arizona and California, the food is very authentic. We will definitely come back, even without a Groupon, as we like to support local businesses and we love good Mexican food.

Been here 3x. The third time was because there were limited options and I thought I'd try it one last time. Food is not very good, its very loud and noisy. Tons of children. I'd stay away if you're on a date. Go somewhere else for Mexican to impress your girlfriend/wife. The food is on the level of an Applebees/Chilis...

Healthy portions of probably unhealthy, but very yummy Mexican food! Strange that we had to go to a suburban strip mall to have some good Tex-Mex and margaritas...

Out of several good mexican restaurants in the area, Ixtapa has always been our favorite. Fast service, open late, tasty margaritas. Food is consistently delicious and affordable. I recommend the Chile con queso - melted white cheese with plenty of hot jalapeño bits. And if you like extra chocolatey mole, you'll love their Pollo en Mole.

  • Gregory K.

I used to enjoy this restaurant because the service was friendly and competent and the food and margaritas were respectable for a suburban restaurant. Tonight, after a long day, I decided to take my partner to Ixtapa after assuring him that it would be good and worth the trip out of Somerville. What a mistake! We gave up El Potro and Papagayo and Tu Yi Yo to drive to Lexington where we were instantly met with a barrage of diners waiting to bust in for this substandard food. Our wait was 15 minutes in a cramped foyer and then we were seated at the tiniest table where all wait staff and patrons would knock into us. Clearly a table set up on weekends to fit overflow. Our waiter was rude--didn't look at us when we took our order and didn't speak either. We were looking forward to guacamole for an appetizer, but it never came. Our entrees were garbage--the mole was too sweet and the refried beans were runny. My partner ordered shrimp and it tasted like sweet and sour shrimp from a substandard suburban Chinese restaurant. The margaritas tasted like they were from a mix. Our waiter never bothered to come over and check on the meal, ask us if we wanted anything else, or pour us more water. He cleared the table then slapped the check on the table without even asking us if we wanted dessert. We were looking forward to ordering churros, but not tonight! I spoke with one of the employees about how disappointed I was with the meal and service and no manager came over to follow up. to add insult to injury, when the bill came, we were still charged for the guacamole! We also had to walk the check up the hostess because our waiter was nowhere to be found after he hurriedly gave us our tab. I will not return here, nor would I recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a decent Mexican meal. Take the time to go into the city where there are a myriad of wonderful, authentic Mexican restaurants with accomplished chefs and attentive waitstaff. This is a poor alternative for suburbanites who do not know any better.

  • Lorri K.

Being from Arizona and accustomed to real Mexican food, I can only give this 3 stars. However, if you compare it to 99% of the Mexican restaurants in the Boston area, it would deserve 5 stars. At least this places TRIES to be authentic instead of wimping out with white rice and melted cheese on everything. Ask for a small bowl of "habenero" sauce to spice up your salsa and food. They make it fresh there and it is HOT.. just a few drops in a bowl of salsa and WOW! Very affordable and my kids love it!

    (3)
  • Leah Z.

Such bad service. They couldn't even tell us they didn't have enough wings to serve our party of four. Our server only told us when our entrees arrived before the appetizer and I asked about it. I will NEVER go back!!

Inoffensive, mild Tex-Mex, very attentive staff, and kid friendly. Food could be spicier, and one of our three meals arrived lukewarm. Also the giant TV is annoying. Overall, a decent family place.

We were out for a Sunday drive and though we would give this place a try because it had some good reviews. Sorry the place is dated and not very clean. The food was bland and tasteless. The salsa and chips was the best part. Service was just OK. Nothing to get excited about here.

Wow. I just moved to Arlington and am so happy that I've found this place. The Girlfriend and I went here because we were craving some flavorful Mexican cuisine, and had so far been disappointed by the areas offerings (Looking at you Acitron, it' called flavor, find it). Now, I love Mexican food, I'm half mexican, and i know what good frijoles and rice taste like. This place was the closest I've come to finding that in New England. Sure it's still not nearly as flavorful, but wow, it's a huge step above anything else I've had in the Northeast. So here are the Highlights: The Guacamole - Get it, it's the best i've had, it's better than mine (which is amazing). It's incredibly fresh. The Free Nachos - Served piping hot, they are delicious, not too greasy, and i could eat several baskets. The Refried Beans - Amazing, really just fantastic, very close to what I'd get at home The Wings - They are unique, and really good. The not so highlights: The Enchiladas - They were oddly sweet. Not bad, just not my taste Overall, we'll be back, and we'll be enjoying the wonderful food they serve here.

OK--maybe we've found our local Mexican, I'm bushed, it's Friday, and I don't feel like cooking and want to relax restaurant. Prices are reasonable, service is attentive and friendly, burritos delicious, chips and salsa plentiful, Margaritas ole!, and fried ice cream, yum. Very family friendly, as attested by the many young children when we first arrived. It's in a strip mall on the edge of suburbia, so until recently, I had ignored it. There was a coupon on the back of my Stop & Shop receipt, so I yelped it and decided to give it a try (of course I forgot to actually use the coupon, but the prices were reasonable so it's OK). I had the Ixtapa burrito with chicken, my daughter had the Veggie Burrito and both of us were more than satisfied.

A step up from the usual casual Mexican restaurant. I have only ordered the veggie green burrito, but always am impressed by how fresh the ingredients taste. There are plenty of average Mexican restaurants where it tastes like much of it comes from a jar or can. I think Ixtapa's food tastes pretty fresh. The ranchero cheese is really a nice touch and adds a good, unique flavor. The chips are nothing special and don't taste fresh like the burritos, but honestly, most places don't have great tortilla chips so I won't worry about that. (I honestly think Chili's has the best tortilla chips because they fry them fresh before serving.) Prices are average, not cheap, but not unreasonable. Pretty cozy inside, clean. I'd recommend this place. You're paying a little more to go to a Mexican restaurant that isn't dumpy - worth it.

I went here with a friend for lunch and it wasn't busy and the service was pretty good. There was only one waitor waiting on about 4 tables which wasn't an issue, just an observation. I had the taco salad and my friend had the fajata wrap. We both loved our meal, I did have to ask for extra cheese but that is my own preferance. We got the churros and chimicheese cake for dessert and they were amazing. I will definitly return and I suggest you try it out if you like mexican food.

Being from Texas, it's been a mission of mine for years to find good Tex-Mex in Boston. What I miss most from back home is tacos al carbon (or Tacos a la Ninfa if you're from Houston). At Ixtapa's Lexington location, I've been able to cobble together a darn good recreation of this sacred meal--good enough that I've been able to save a lot of money on plane tickets back home to satisfy my cravings. Here's how you, too, can get a taste of Texas right here in Boston. Go to Ixtapa, sit down and enjoy the hot, fresh chips and salsa. They don't have Ninfa's style green sauce, but I forgive them because who does outside of Houston? Order the carne asada. Now here are the tricks--it doesn't come with tortillas, so you have to ask for flour tortillas. You also must order the chile con queso appetizer with it. Now, when they bring you your plate of flame grilled carne asada, you cut the meat into strips, roll into a flour tortilla, and dip into your cheese sauce. Heaven from home! The guacamole is good, too, as are the refried beans and tender, flavorful rice. I've had other things here too, like the enchiladas, tamales, and tacos, and they're all pretty good. But my undying devotion to this place is due to my ability to get my tacos al carbon fix.

This is our pretty much go to for a relaxing, decent mexican food place. Good drinks, and the food has some high points - we went lasst night had the Tortilla Soup - Could have been hotter - but the flavor was decent. Pork is good, the Chili Rellanos too. Not a bad joint.

Ixtapa is walking distance for us and so we have been many times. It is family friendly (and packed on a Saturday from 5 to 8 pm) and kids can get chicken fingers or tacos or other choices for a very reasonable $4.50. We usually get one of the many delicious combination plates that let you choose between enchilada, chimichanga, tostada, tamale, burrito and tacos. I usually opt for the tacos (shreded beef, pork and chicken). Last night I had for the first time the sopa de albondigas and it was fantastic! it is a combination of pork and beef in a broth with potato and carrots. I added the tomatoes, onion and cilantro and a dollop of sour cream. It is worth a trip to try this dish alone. I like spicy food and the dishes as they come from the kitchen are mild to suit a wider palate. Ask for hot sauce and you will get a small bowl of habanero that looks made in the kitchen that will let you adjust your meal to the kick you want - and it is very flavorful, not just heat, but a teaspoon on your taco will give you that glow!

  • Layla L.

I'm going to be honest- while my rating of Ixtapa stays the same (it is, indeed, "A-OK"), I'm probably never going to eat here again after discovering La Posada. The price range is similar and yet there's just no comparison between the two places. Only come here if you really want quantity of food over quality or can't live without a margarita with your nachos.

This is an okay place, but authentic Mexican food it is not. Still, it's all right. The portions are large and pretty affordable, and the service very friendly and accommodating. We got our meals in T-10 seconds and everyone seemed to enjoy what they ordered. I guess I'm a little picky when it comes to good Mexican food. I found the salsa at the table to be very watery and bland, but then again I like it nice and chunky with a lot of heat. The food itself was decent, it arrived fresh and hot and wasn't too oily or greasy. I ordered the chicken fajitas for dinner, and the chicken itself was fine although a little dry. The guacamole was good and probably the best part of the meal next to the refried beans, which were slightly on the soupy side but still tasty. They came with a ton of sour cream but hardly any cheese, which I don't care about since I don't eat it. The rice was different; it came with peas, carrots and celery which I thought was an interesting take on the dish. Here's the thing: what I love about Mexican cuisine are the spices and flavors. That's what really does it for me. And they honestly didn't have any special kick or flavor to their food without the addition of salsa, salt and pepper on top of what came from the kitchen. Nothing about the meal was a standout or exceptional, it's just there. Very vanilla. Not delicious but not terrible. Put it this way, if someone asked me to meet them there I'd go, but I wouldn't return on my own.

Californian in search of good mexican in MA. This is top on my list. Favorite thing on the menu. California Burritto. M-M-GOOD. Pork "chile verde," rice, bean, and cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla. Smothered with guacamole, tomatoes, and onions. Topped with ranchero cheese. HUGE, and delicious. I get take out often. Take out comes with chips and salsa too. I like their salsa better than many others Ive had, not too chunky that you cant scoop it with the chip. Decent heat...I like it.

We were up house hunting in Lexington and were starving, and wanted to gamble on some Mexican. It's not the best Mexican I've ever had, but it was pretty good; not too expensive, and the food came out fast and hot. I'm not sure what more you could want or expect. The portions were really big, and I usually don't have any problems finishing Mexican food :P If I were in the area again and wanted Mexican I would definitely go there.

I have been to Ixtapa a number of times now, and am always satisifed with the food and service. I've gone with a large party (well, is ~10 people a large party?) and they were incredibly accommodating and kept the margarita pitchers coming for us. I've also been with just one other person, and we never have to wait long for a server to drop by, and they are very patient with questions about the food. I tend to stick with chicken as my choice of meat, so I can say their quesadillas, enchiladas, burritos are wonderful in that respect, but I cannot comment on the other meats. When I went with the large party, everyone thought the food was great, and I will certainly keep going back. The refried beans are a little scary looking, but DELICIOUS. It may not be authentic Mexican food for some folks, but it's pretty tasty nonetheless, and I do not find the food bland at all.

First time here was pleasant. I found the service to be friendy and fast. We had a couple of yummy margaritas which had a good balanace of sour and strength:) I am a mexican food fan but not a fanatic. I used to be the guy who would order fajitas or a big wet burrito but now I tend to seek anything mole or somthing with fish because most basic mexican (new england offerings at least) bore me. Ixtapa has enchiladas mole and pollo en mole. I ordered the pescado santa cruz wich arrived on a large round plate. It consisted of rice, beans, and a decent piece of seasoned Halibut on a large bed of onion and mushroom. My wife had chile verde which was mildly seasoned and was a good portion size. I personally would prfer a little more heat but my wife found things to be a good balance for her. Good prices!

The food here is nothing to write home about. The chimichunga was small but flavorul and fried to perfection. The rice tasted like it had been left on the heat to long. The real upside to this place was the service. They kept my drink full and the chips and salsa coming through the entire meal.

Pretty solid standard Mexican American food. Large menu. Chips and salsa were served almost immediately and the water was filled with great attention. Everything was very efficient. Seemed like it was good for families. Lots of kids there. We enjoyed mariachi Thursday. Came because we had a coupon. Would return if in the area.

Hey now, tasty stuff, great salsa, and the cups say "Siempre Coca-Cola!" I got the triple threat Ixtapa Combo plate, you get to choose 3 of enchilada, burrito, taco, and chimichanga and something else I DON'T RECALL! anyway I got the chicken enchilada, a beef taco, and pork chimi. I love the mess o' rice and beans they give you on the plate! Friendly staff too. We shall be back.

Fast becoming our favorite Mexican restaurant! Been there a few times and the service is always quick and spot on. Haven't had found anything we haven't enjoyed. Portions are very filling so we rarely do dessert, but like I said, never been disappointed. Good food, well priced, efficiently served... GO!

I am a huge fan of Ixtapa. They really cater to the customers needs. The servers are so friendly, and they often will serenade tables with a harp they have. I love their chips and salsa, so great. And their food is always spot on. They have a creative margarita list, and the margaritas are always good. They once featured a fried ice cream for dessert and it was amazing. My first time trying fried Ice Cream. Very casual and laid back. My friend and I once traveled 45 minutes to come here, just to give you an idea of how much we enjoy our experience here.

I have been here about three times, for both lunch and dinner. I have always had a good experience. The wait staff is friendly but not stifling, the chips are always hot and tasty, and the decor is cute. The portions are huge, and it's not too expensive. I live in San Diego for most of the year and this place is nicer than a lot of the Mexican restaurants out there, and I have always been happy with my experience. I had read some negative reviews of this place on Yelp and thought to myself, "Did I go to the same place?" It almost made me second guess taking friends there last night. But we made the thirty minute drive to get there and they all loved it. It has my stamp of approval and it's on my automatic list when I'm in the mood for Mexican.

First time I ate here with a friend and we waited a while to get served, and when we were done eating our server after quite a while just walked over and put the bill down - never asking if we wanted dessert. I wasn't very impressed. Second time was today at lunch. Some co-workers and I wanted some mexican food and decided to come here. Our server was fairly attentive and very friendly. Salsa is much too watery - it just falls off the chips. Otherwise the food was decent - not amazing, but not terrible and was served quickly.

We found Ixtapa just driving by about a month or so ago and decided to try it. It's a warm, happy place to go--lots of families, couples--and seems to be a family run business. The servers were very friendly, attentive, and quick--so immediately, the restaurant gave us a good feeling. We've really enjoyed the food. Homemade warm chips and salsa are served immediately--and the enchiladas were tasty. What made us stop in our tracks, though, was their soup. I can't remember the name. It had meatballs and vegetables in it, and came with sides of chopped cilantro, onions, and a wedge of lime so you could add to the soup. So flavorful. Anyway--we loved the soup so much, we've been back twice...just to order that soup. It has such complexity of flavor--really satisfying, really good, and excellent on a cold autumn night! We've definitely become huge fans and will be there often. And their prices are really reasonable, too.

Love the friendly waitstaff and I thoroughly enjoy their tasty, free chips and salsa when dining in. They have tv's to watch whatever sports are in season and comfy booths. Food is standard mexican, fresh enough and VERY quickly served, just not the most amazing mex I have ever had. Some of the chicken entrees end up being soggy because the meat seems like it not drained when the dish it up. But when looking for a quick, clean, friendly and fairly cheap place to go this fits the bill. Oh and yummy margs if you are into that kind of thing!

IXTAPA is located in Lexington, with on site parking, easy to find and seems to be a trendy and hip mexican rest. I only went there with a group for girlfriends for drinks.. they have a wide selection of frozen martinis . Very generous portions of chips and homemade slasa. Seems to be the after work social spot. I have been to Ixtapa a few times now and it's OK. I keep going because it is close to work and I love taco salad, which they do a pretty good job with. The lettuce and tomato are always fresh and the taco shell it is served in is SO yummy (nothing like saying you had a salad for lunch and failing to mention that it was served from a huge fried bowl!). I get chicken in my salad and they give you lots of it. Some may not love the salsa, which is thin, but I love it. I also like that the chips are warm and always fresh. The guacamole is just average. The service varies... I have been there with a group of 5 when it took forever and another time with a group 4 when we were in and out. Now, I usually get my fix with the takeout.

Not terrible, nice staff, but not good either. Just kinda "eh". Too many other good places in the area. I've had really good Mexican food on the left coast, and I don't expect to find that here (but, why, why???), but this was just forgettable, unfortunately.

So......this has quickly developed into our favorite place. Try the Rosarita Margarita......you will be hooked! The staff is awesome - our favorite waiter knows us the minute we walk in the door and we get rock-star treatment everytime. I even had my birthday party here (they will rent out the basement room) and it was AWESOME! Perfect for a party rental - very reasonably priced. If you haven't gone to Ixtapa already, GO. If you have gone, GO AGAIN. We have to make sure these guys NEVER go out of business! My Rosarita addiction depends on you!

My husband and I love this place. The food is so YUMMY! Its perfect for the both of us because my husband loves spicey and I'm a mild girl. Ixtapa offers both. My favorites are the Taquito Bites, the Camarones, and the Taco Salad. Oh and let me not forget the Margaritas. Last night we got take-out from Ixtapa. For $15 and change we got an order of Taquito Bites and three Tacos. Plus they give you a lunch bag full of tortilla chips with salsa. The staff is so friendly too. A nice change from many places today. So if you are craving Mexican food skip the chains and go to Ixtapa. This place is also great for kids. Kids love the sombrero. The adults do too. ;-) Fun place for a birthday party.

I grew up in Arizona and California, so I've had my share of good Mexican food. I wish I could say Ixtapa has good Mexican food, but it just doesn't. It's not hideous (and that actually constitutes praise in the New England area), but it's mostly bland and uninspired. The best thing in the restaurant is the fresh chips and pretty decent salsa. But the main dishes are just not that good. I expect that if you've never lived outside this area, you will probably consider this acceptable. But I consider it more of a "why bother, and why spend the money?" kind of place. I'll take a decent burrito, which you CAN get in this area (Anna's, Boca Grande, Qdoba, Chipotle) over this stuff any day...and I'll just daydream about going back to California to get my real Mexican food fix.

This is one of our favorite restaurants! Whenever I crave Mexican food and margaritas, this is my number one choice - based on the flavor and the fact that it's reasonably priced. The portions are big - my boyfriend and I always split an entree. It's a really nice place to eat out - fun, festive atmosphere, really friendly staff, attentive servers, nice music (Mariachi night is on Thursday), and delicious food. Lots of regular customers. Our favorite items: arroz con pollo mexicali chimichanga 3 choice plate asada burrito nachos Presidente Margarita Frozen strawberry margarita For dessert the fried ice cream is fantastic, and the churros are awesome.

Large restaurant, plenty of seating and a nice parking lot. The food isn't that authentic... The kids menu had a -mexican pizza- that was more like those little microwave Red barons. But at least they offered kids food. Come here for the mole enchilladas and awesome margaritas. Great service too.

I never leave here still feeling hungry... bring stretchy pants!! They always start you off with homemade chips and salsa, which are delicious. The chips are still hot when they come out, and the salsa tastes so fresh! I've been here a couple of times and ordered something new every time. So far the winner is the Chimichanga Mexicali... it's topped with this chile con queso sauce that it to DIE for! Haven't had the room after dinner to brave a dessert so far, but I've been told that the fried (yes fried!) cheesecake is devilishly good. The waiters are always super friendly, and always have a re-fill ready on your drink.

This place is great! We go there with our toddler for lunch at least once a week. The staff is very child friendly. Our meals come out lightening fast and are always perfect. Our chips, salsa and drinks are never left empty. Incredible food, great service, and GREAT prices! The three of us can get lunch for $20, and there are always leftovers. We've been going there for years, and never get sick of it. I highly recommend it.

Ixtapa...four stars for friendly and attentive waiters, great chips and salsa, cheesy Mariachi bands one night a week (Thursday, I think?), and convenient parking (easy parking = big points, in my reviews). The food...well, there's a large selection, portions are decent, and it's what I expect from this sort of SouthWestern/Mexican restaurant. Nothing I've had has been amazing, but it fills that hole in my soul that calls out for refried beans slopped on a plate beside something spicy. Plus, I think there were fake cacti and sombreros on the wall...you can almost believe you're in Tijuana. Relax, enjoy the ambiance, and don't expect anything gourment - not a bad meal.

I'm not from California or Arizona or anywhere else where people say the Mexican food is sublime and all New England Mexican food is crap, so I'm no expert, but I do know what I like and it wasn't my meal. There was so much grease puddled under my food that it wasn't very appetizing. My husband's dinner was fresher, lighter and tastier so I know its possible. I guess I just ordered the wrong thing, but I wasn't impressed. Also, the lemonade was terrible (Crystal Lite maybe?) and the decor was bright and cheery but also left me with a bit of an Epcot Center feeling. The staff was great. Very attentive without being pushy or hovering. I think I'll stick with the other Mexican place within walking distance and go to La Posada instead.

This place has a great decor and fun atmosphere it would seem to be a great place for a group dinner including on the night that they have a mariachi band. We were seated immediately and served chips and salsa which were very very good. I am a chips and salsa lover so its a key thing to have good chips and salsa at a mexican place ! The waiter was very attentive and brought us whatever we needed in a timely fashion. My boyfriend ordered the tortilla soup which was very tasty and he enjoyed it very much. He had ordered the carne asada for his main dish and the flavors were really good and the dish wasnt bad at all. I ordered the seafood quesadilla and it was horrible, the fish was salty and it was also very cold fish so it was not a hot dish at all only thing that was hot was the tortilla on the outside and the rice but other than that the seafood is cold so beware! We got churros to go for a dessert and they were delicious! The downside of this restaurant is that we felt rushed through out meal, my boyfriend didnt finish his soup and set it aside to eat after his meal and they took it from him when they brought our main dishes and shortly after receiving our main dishes we were asked if we were all done when we were just relaxing and enjoying our dinner so that was a definite let down of the dinner. The parking is great as there is a huge parking lot so that isnt a problem. Altogether its a great place to go but I think its a better place to in a large group as the atmospere is a good happy place

Nothing more than your average canned, cookie cutter Mexican template restaurant. Nothing on the menu stood out as something you could only find here. Tried a soup and an entree during my visit. The soup broth had fair flavor; however, the vegetables and meatballs were very over cooked. Vegetables fell apart at the slightest touch of a spoon. The meatballs were supposed to be minted and had no visible or flavor hints indicating that mint was used in their preparations. The tamela was dry while the shredded beef filling was barely noticeable. The environment was clean, the staff seemed confused at times and service was prompt when they were attentive. The prices were steep compared to the quality and portions of the food. I would suggest going here if you are in the area looking for average Mexican fair. However, if you feel like driving there are much better Mexican restaurants to select from.

Ya know, I really WANT to like this place. I love the staff... all really friendly, and the same guys who have been there forever. I like them all. Sometimes, when I'm really hungry, this place just hits the spot... Go here for lunch and get the Grilled Chicken Burrito. It's ONLY on the lunch menu. My wife and I tried getting it for dinner, but they looked at us like we were asking Domino's to make donuts, and brought us something close off the dinner menu instead. I'm not sure what's up with that. Maybe the secret ninja chef only works till 4 every day. Food: C+ Price: B- Atmosphere: B Staff: A Overall: B-

It's easy to be the best Mexican restaurant when you're the only Mexican restaurant (nice one, Mihir). But I digress. Ixtapa has a wide variety of standard Mexican fare. My wife and I were clamoring for something different to add to our rotation of pizza, Chinese Food, and Panera. Ixtapa fits that bill. We're a takeout couple, so I haven't been inside Ixtapa except for its waiting area, which seems to get a lot of traffic. Their takeout menu is the same as their dinner menu, as far as I can tell. The food is good, but I can't help but think that a proper meal at the restaurant would be better. That being said, they supply some fresh tortilla chips, which have been hit or miss lately, but when they're a hit, they're awesome. I enjoy this takeout food, and I hope you do too!

Great Tex-Mex food and very accommodating to kids. It is one of the few places that we can go out with the entire family and not feel like we are getting "the look". If your kids like to run around ask to be seated in the lower dining room and have the flat screen TV turned on. They also have a kids menu however, my kids typically order a side of rice/beans, cheese and tortillas and just make their own. They love the experience and usually finish their meal. The chips (usually nice and warm - yummy) and salsa (just right for kids) are good too. For adults I like their Spinach Enchiladas and the Ixtapa Veggie Special. I usually order all food with out cheese on top.

My coworkers and I ate dinner at your Lexington location last night (Friday August 20, 2010) and we were extremely dissatisfied with the service we received. I frequent the Woburn location more than once a month and enjoy the upbeat staff, great service and clean atmosphere. The experience was not the same in Lexington. There were two waitresses assigned to our table of 10 guests. The rest of the restaurant was nearly empty, we were in the basement, and were the only party for most of the night. Twice, the waitresses approached the table with a drink, said the incorrect name for the drink (for example, said "Banana Margarita" and I took it since that's what I ordered, began to drink it) She returned to ask if it tasted like banana and informed me it was the wrong drink, meant for my friend who ordered an unflavored margarita. This happened with two entrees as well. She presented the entree with the wrong name and it turned out to be a seafood entree. Thus, causing both individuals to wait for their food after the rest of the party had already received their food. Where seafood allergies are so prevalent, that is a mistake that never should have occurred. Neither one of them could answer questions about the entrees, did not have knowledge regarding the entrees or perhaps they were in training. On more than one occasion we had to wait an extended period of time for our drinks, and had to ask many times for our empty glasses to be cleared from the table--the table was covered in empty glasses, and with two waitresses working the table, neither one of them removed a glass until the end of the night. Upon clearing the drinks, two of the guests had a drink spilled on them. When it came time to receive the check, the waitresses split the check into two checks claiming there was a technical problem. Overall, we all felt as though they lacked the experience to represent your restaurant positively. Unfortunately, in our party, there were many guests who had never been to Ixtapa previously. They did not receive a good impression and many said they would not return. I will also not return to Lexington and appreciate the fantastic service I receive in Woburn even more now! Keep up the good work, Ixtapa Woburn!

I found it quite amusing to see a plaque hanging on the wall at the entrance reading "Best Mexican Restaurant in Lexington". Ixtapa is the only Mexican restaurant in Lexington. The atmosphere is a tad dull as the music is at a low volume and the staff is mellow yet very friendly and accomodating. The tortilla chips were served hot and the salsa had a nice kick to it. The menu selection is your standard "Amexican" cuisine that you'd find at any other chain restaurant. The food was mediocre - HUGE plates filled with rice and refried beans and that basically camouflage the main entree. But it doesn't help once you find it as the entrees are extremely mild and flavorless. I give this place three stars only because the staff was so nice.

A good friend of mine has been raving about Ixtapa for months, but it took her until last week to finally get me there. There was some urgency in the matter as she was about to finalize her move from Somerville to Stoughton and I've been preparing to never see her again. I didn't realize this place was in a plaza on Mass Ave. I never really think much of plaza restaurants, but this one proved me wrong. It has a pretty open seating arrangement, though it was still charming with its Mexican decor and friendly, Spanish-speaking waitstaff. The menu, however, was by far the best part. It took us about 20 minutes to order (partially because we were talking so much and partially because there's so much to consider). You can see the menu online if you want a headstart on ordering. I settled on the Nachos Supreme and Combo Laredo with beef burrito and chicken enchilada. The combo came with authentic Spanish rice, refried beans and a small salad (basically just lettuce). It was really tasty food, mildly spicy and enough to make you full. I didn't finish my meal only to save room for fried ice cream and apple burrito desserts! I'm sure I'll be back for take out.

You'll like this restaurant if you're looking for authentic, hole-in-the-wall style Mexican food you'd find out West. Also, if you are able to tell the difference between Mexican food and similar food from other countries, and you feel like you can't find actual Mexican food in Boston, don't worry. This place fits the bill as actual Mexican food. (I'm from California and my bf is from Texas, and we're both of Mexican descent). Pros: Rice and Beans: Good slightly greasy pinto beans, refried. (They have black beans too if you want them). Rice is moist and authentic. Tamales: The meat inside is tender and well-spiced. The outside is moist. Great! Chile Rellenos: Light fluffy egg batter with a spicy green pepper. Not greasy at all. This was perfect. Albondigas Soup: Delicious and authentic meatball soup with mint and rice and veggies. Enchiladas, burritos and tostadas were also great. It seems like they put a lot of care into their meats. Everything is tender and juicy. Cons Salsa is not spicy, but I don't think spicy salsa can be found in Boston.

Salty, salty, salty...and I say this as someone who is not sensitive to sodium. You'll definitely want a Dos Equis to accompany your meal - and in fact, it may wind up being the most memorable thing you taste during your visit. The chips and salsa are great, and the food is pretty cheap ($6.99 for my seafood enchiladas) but based on the salty taste, I'm assuming that a lot of ingredients come from a jar or can. (The salsa, though, seemed fresh.) Each time we've been, the waiters have been very attentive and friendly - and nicely tolerant of our attempts at speaking Spanish. It's because of the service that I wish I could give this a higher rating. I guess if one goes with appropriate expectations (the beers are $4 and bottled, nothing on tap; inexpensive food and lots of it) you'll be okay.

Mexican food is so hard to come by in Boston. Correction, "Good" Mexican food is so hard to come by in Boston. There are a few nice hole in the wall joints that we have been to that met my high standards, but nothing that is convenient for us to get to. Being out in the burbs, we had a chance to try out Ixtapa. As we walk in I started thinking that Ixtapa would probably be like Acapulcos in Sudbury, and that's not a complaint. We were seated in a booth and brought out salsa and chips. (The waiters were very nice, constantly saying "Mi amigo" to us whenever they refilled our waters or salsa.) The chips were salted and the salsa, while a bit watery, was fresh and light. The menu at Ixtapa has all the Tex-Mex staples one expects. Burritos, fajitas, chimichangas, etc. Abby decided for the chimichanga with pork and I went with the Ixtapa Enchiladas, which was three different enchiladas: shredded chicken, shredded beef and jack cheese. Both meals were served with refried beans and rice. I have to say, my enchiladas were very respectable and were very above average. I've been craving some good Mexican for the last couple of weeks, and this hit the spot. The refried beans and rice were tastier than average as well. Abby had nothing bad to say about her chimichanga, so I take it that she liked it. While we were eating, we could hear children playing in the back. This helps makes the place for me. Family run Mexican places (similar to Acapulcos in Sudbury) are usually a lot better than corporate run ones. I wish this place was closer than Lexington because I'd be back, especially for their lunch menus during the week. Deals starting at $6.50. That was probably my only knock on Ixtapa. $13 for my enchiladas seemed a bit steep. If it was $10 or so, I'd think it was a pretty good deal. I give Ixtapa a very strong 3 1/2 out of 5.

This is a great family place, we tried it with two little kids, and the atmosphere was relaxing to bring kids to. Great service. San Diego natives like myself will never be satisfied with Mexican food so far away from Mexican food mecca, but this was fine. The retried beans were really good/authentic. Friendly kids menu. Fajitas need some improvement. The real problem was all the flashing TVs (3 of them) that make it NOT so much a family place. Mariachi band night? It was awesome! But think "jolly men playing la cucaracha with an ad for Guns of Death video game distracting the kids in the background". Turn off the TVs on Mariachi night please!! So we'd go back maybe, but wish we could sit in a TV free zone otherwise our kids won't even look at us. That would make it 4 stars.

Ixtapa is very much a standard Mexican restaurant, but the food above average as far as consistency goes - it's always fresh and delicious. If you don't find it spicy enough, then you can always ask for habanero salsa - that will crank up the Skoville units to your satisfaction, I'm sure. The margaritas are top notch, and the service if very friendly - particularly Richardo and Gabby. It would be great if they had a few more options on the menu, particularly in the appetizer department. We usually end up skipping apps, but still we never leave hungry.

This is a relatively new place in Lexington near the Arlington line. It's in a spot that used to be the greek Athenian restaurant. Now it's a new mexican place with a number of tables upstairs and down. I was a little bummed that they don't have even a little bar area to sit, but this is Lexington. That's a shame because they do have some good margaritas. So, you need to get a table to have some. The bright side is that the food is good. They serve very large portions of food and so far everything has been good. The refried beans are tasty and the rice is moist and flavorful. When is the last time you didn't have dry rice on the side? The fish tacos are also great here. Nice and fresh flaky (not fried) fish with some cabbage, cilantro and limes on the side. I'm used to El Pelon's tacos and I must say I like the fresh flaky fish better. But I do wish I had the pickled cabbage instead of the fresh. Still good, but not quite the same.

We came down here for lunch and it wasn't crowded at all. Food was good, actually better than i expected, I had me some mole, cause I'm addicted to mole, and left more than happy. I've been sitting at my desk with a big mole smile all afternoon. My compatriots had a lunch combo and a chimichanga, respectively, and both agreed that it was quite yummers. The salsa has a nice bit of cilantro and had a moderate amount of capcacin to where it was noticeable, but not overwhelming, a good burn. Ran $13 each for lunch, but we splurged a bit. So for Lexington, a decent Mexican place, there, now get back to work!

uh... can you say a family place? It's GREAT if you are there as a family, casual, loud, and fun. It's not the place you go to if you are trying to have a nice meal out with one or two people. I think their food is ok. They have a decent selection of basic somewhat authentic mexican food, but nothing that ever really catches my eye. Everything is kinda slopped on the plate and tastes the same. The drinks are pretty watered down, but the service is nice and friendly. Ample parking makes it easy.

Meh. It's a good place to go if you're hard up for mexican, but if that's the case, then maybe a trip to Chipotle's would be less bother. That said, the amiable staff and cheery environment made me feel right at home. You certainly won't starve, as the portions are more than generous. On the other hand, if you judge the quality of the restaurant by the guac they serve... Guacamole is a thing that should stand on its own and revered, not accompanied by the words "spread", or "dip", or "sauce". :( Pros; hot chips and salsa, good quality margaritas (as judged by a 'rita-loving friend.

I been here with my husband and daughter for a family night out, and also out with girlfriends for a night of margaritas and nachos. It's fun for everyone! The drink selection is pretty good, and the drinks are nice and stiff. The food is okay, but the service and atmosphere makes up for the not so flavorful rice and beans. They also have seating downstairs for private functions, like birthday parties and such.

food's always better when it's unexpected. driving home hungry one night from acton, dtf does the food search on blackberry google maps and comes up with some average choices, but then ixtapa comes up. give them a call and find out there open for another hour, so we stop in. it's hard to tell that they're even open because they blend in so well with the strip mall their located in. few windows and a non-lit-up sign make it hard to spot. luckily there's the open sign in the window, and we have a gps. dark outside, but warm and welcoming once you get in. overall nice service and good food. the chips and salsa were very good, which is obviously the most important ranking for any mexican restaurant. we shared the chile con queso and the vegitarian ixtapa (one spinach enchilada, one cheese enchilada, one chille relleno and a side of black beans) which were both very good. only surprising thing was that it didn't come with rice, just beans, and the beans were sub-par. we were really excited for dessert, but, as usual, we didn't make it there. we didn't even finish the one entree that we were sharing. definitely would stop back in if we were in the area again. solid 4 stars.

I noticed right away how empty the place was but decided not to be judgemental as it was a monday night....the decor was simple ..nice mexican ..southwesternish..our waiter was very personable and seated us promptly..my friend ordered the only vegetarian meal on the menu (veg burrito)..which he seemed to enjoy..my california burrito looked impressive but jus lacked it....wats it u say..well how about the carnitas..which was hardly there...rice was abundant in flavor but jus a wee bit much much with loaded beans...it jus didnt do it for me..and paying 13 bucks for mine..hell i expected some more wow factors...my salsa was too runny and lacked spice... long story short..prob not again..:(

I come here with coworkers for lunch a lot and the service is great. The guys are very friendly and usually remember you after two visits. They've got lunch combos where you can mix and match enchiladas with burritos, etc. The steak fajita quesidillas are very tasty, while the chicken equivalent tends to be dry. The seafood dishes I've ordered are mediocre. You get complementary chips and great salsa which they are very prompt to refill. Overall this is a great place.

Ixtapa is like the Applebee's of Mexican restaurants. I cannot fathom why anyone would willingly dine here when Zocalo is a mere mile down the lane. Senor Paddy and I thought we'd give this restaurant a shot since it's close to our home in Arlington. I'd driven by numerous times and it often seemed busy, so we figured, why not. Here is why not. My fish tacos were served with "white sauce." The white sauce in question, I can safely say, was Ken's salad dressing (ranch flavor) served in a silver cup. Senor Paddy asked for guacamole. Our waiter informed us that they were out of guacamole. At 7:30pm. On a Saturday evening. Knowing this did not augur well for our meal, we then asked for avocado slices, onion, and tomato, and decided we could just as easily make the guacamole ourselves. Our obliging server brought us two browned slices of avocado, some sad-looking tomato cubes, and a fistful of cilantro. We soldiered on. Senor Paddy also ordered quesadillas. These emerged from the kitchen lukewarm and were a similar DIY adventure. We asked for hot sauce and were brought a tub of what tasted like vinegar and pepper mixed together with a splash of bourbon. Feeling a bit weary, I ordered a margarita and specified on the rocks, no salt. My drink was brought to me coated in salt. I sucked it down quickly and we made haste to our auto. The service here is very friendly and I'm sure they mean well. If you're a suburban family looking for a night out with kids, this is probably a fine choice. But if you long for authentic Mexican, head elsewhere with all due haste.

I don't know the first thing about authentic Mexican food, but I am a big fan of popular tex-mex food. This is one of my favorite places in the area. Everything I've tried has been quite good, and the service is always pleasant as well. If I'm craving fajitas this place always hits the spot and never lets me down.

My first visit there was unremarkable, but not bad. It's near my house so I figured I would go back. My most recent visit there.... not good. Zero stars. I ordered the carnitas. It was disgusting. Basically it was a roast loin of pork, totally overcooked, and gray in color presented in some inexplicable gelatinous gravy-like mess. I should have sent it back. Carnitas should be tender, falling apart if not already shredded and succulent. They did not even use the right cut of meat. Plus you get your food within about 3 minutes of ordering. Yes the chips are crispy, warm and tasty but certainly can't save this place from a one star rating.

I enjoyed the food here. The prices seem a little higher than some Mexican restaurants (or maybe I'm just spoiled by working near a Boca Grande), but the portions were large and tasty. I had one of the Mole dishes, which was good, but still doesn't measure up to what I remember from the dive in New Orleans where I first had mole. One friend had the whole Tilapia fish, which they liked, despite the fact that you have to deal with an entire fish, bones and all. Other friends had Fajitas and Quezadillas, which they enjoyed. Dishes come with a choice of either refried beans or black beans.

Well we couldn't decide what to have for dinner the other night and decided Mexican was the way to go. However neither of us wanted to make tacos at home, so Ixtapa was mentioned and voila there we were. I'm still new to the Boston area and getting to know all the good food places. I can happily add this one to the list. The food here was really tasty. We started off with the Taquito bites (beef version) which were really scrumptious and almost filled me up before the main course. So so good with the guac and sour cream. I had the Enchiladas Mazatlan dish which was really interesting and good. The rice that came with was really delicious. My lady had the Arroz con Pollo, which I think was even better. The mushrooms in that dish were making me drool a little. Thankfully there were napkins. Everything we had was really great. The chips and salsa were some of the best I'd ever had at any Mexican restaurant. I was really impressed. Highly recommended for dinner.

Blech! Seriously unimpressive. I placed a fairly big order for 5 people and figured it would take a little longer than normal, but not over an hour! As I waited in the entryway, catching the lovely winter breeze every time someone opened the door, I watched the comings and goings of the staff. I'm pretty good at understanding Spanish so it was interesting to feel like a fly on the wall.... plus I fit right in with all the other flies buzzing around in there... ha... just kidding about that part, there really were no flies, since it was winter and they were all laying on the beach drinking margaritas near a real Mexican restaurant south of the border. Anyway, I had watched someone come out of the kitchen and fuss around with a bag and then place it on top of a high shelf before going back inside. Could this be my order? Nope, guess not, no one is paying any attention must be something else. Several weeks went by, and finally... okay well it seemed like weeks.... a very long time had passed and finally I stopped someone and asked about my long lost order. She went into the kitchen and came back with the guy who put the bag on the shelf, he pointed it out, she took it back inside the kitchen and then came back out a moment later. She handed me the same bag "Here's your order." In case you can't understand that, let me translate. "Gee, I hope you are too stupid and clueless to realize your order has been sitting here on this shelf for the last 30 minutes. Yes, I can see by the look on your face that you had no idea I just brought that bag into the kitchen and turned right around and handed it to you. Wooo! I pulled it off! I got rid of that old, cold food to that dimwit, no one had to re-do that big order, and no one got yelled at... especially me! Now point me to the margarita machine I deserve a drink! " The food practically had ice crystals on it when I checked it out in the car. I figured I could just reheat when I got home. Not only did they give us a frozen dinner, but the order was not totally correct, and the worst part... it was pretty sub-par. I hate to say, even if I was to eat this hot and fresh, I really think I wouldn't return. What I really should have done is send it back, get my money back, and swear Montezuma's Revenge upon their establishment! Okay, well, at least get my money back so I could go order a pizza!

Like some other folks, I live nearby, so it's convenient. I've been a few times. It's always incredibly salty. Chips and salsa are pretty good. Fresh tortilla chips earn it one star. The carnitas are criminally bad (see Heather P's review). My last visit will be my last visit.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
