The food: The chef uses high quality ingredients and the food tastes really good. We both had salad $10 and the the swordfish special which came with a few fingerling potatoes and some vegetables in a white wine sauce that was outstanding--$25. Fish was fresh and cooked perfectly. Both the portions and the price points are responsible. I really enjoyed my dinner. Service: Could be better. Food arrived to the table in a reasonable amount of time. Our server was not all that friendly. My dining companion ordered a cocktail and I ordered a soda with our dinner. She never checked back with us to see if we would like a second drink. We had to wait a long time to get our check. Ambience: You absolutely need a reservation. The restaurant is charming and very small. There are maybe 10-12 tables and bar that holds about 6 seats. The tables are very close together-- so not a good place to go if you want a romantic evening, or for business. On the night we went, there was a party of 6 that was super obnoxiously loud and they overwhelmed the dining room, making it very difficult for the other diners to have conversation. They seemed to get all of the attention from the server, which is why we were neglected.

How is this for service?! The owner/chef came out to find out what he could prepare for me since I am vegetarian. You won't get that service at a chain or franchise restaurant. I opted for the vegetable assortment and loved it, but the artichoke and cheese raviolis sounded really good too. I could have eaten a platter full of the mashed potatoes. My husband got the steak and said that it was delicious. I only wish that we had gotten dessert.

My wife and I had a very nice Valentine's dinner here. The atmosphere was intimate enough for a special occasion with your significant other, but was also comfortable so it would be excellent for an everyday dinner, or with a small group. I had the scallops, which were probably the best scallops I've ever eaten at a restaurant. They were big and plump, very tender. Profiteroles for dessert; delicious with coconut ice cream. My wife had lobster bisque and filet mignon. I didn't sample them but she thought they were superb. She had vanilla creme brulee for dessert. Service was extremely attentive, without being hovering; friendly without joining the party. We will definitely be going back to Nine Elm soon.

Cute little restaurant. location is easy to miss, but it's awesome food every time I go. Tiny and cozy feeling, definitely better for a date night vs. group outing since it is so small (less than 10 tables).

Wonderful dinner. Wonderful service. Wonderful dessert. We are in town for a car show. Stumbled on this gem. So glad we did.

Well worth checking out, food is superb, service was good... no reason this place shouldn't be on your short list of places to go... We both had the french onion soup, the consensus was it was good, had better, but good... she had the Fillet, ordered it well done, and it came out rare (sorry but cost a star), I had the cider braised pork chop, which was off the hook, possibly the most tender and juicy pork chop I have ever had... over all we will be there again, and again, but, personally it wont sway me from going around the corner to ipazzi more

FABULOUS!!!! I ordered the salmon which was cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the sirloin also cooked to perfection! Both entrees were delicious. Our server was friendly and efficient. This was our first time dining at 9 Elm American Bistro but it definitely will not be our last. I wish the owners the best of luck

Wooo the food is great! I had the swordfish and it melts in ur mouth. The risotto was freaking awesome. I only discovered this place recently but it's one of my favs. Love the ppl here. The owners a funny guy, and cooks some damn good food. Never knew Danvers has such great restaurants, I've been missing out all these years.

I was in town on business and called up my cousin to go out to dinner. We chose 9 Elm, and weren't not disappointed at all. It was a tuesday night and we had to sit at the bar cause we had no reservations. The service was outstanding, the wine and beer list the same. The food, words truely cannot describe. I had the Duck, and It was the best duck I have ever had! I don't get up there a lot to this part of the country, but it's the kind of place you just didn't want the meal to be over. AMAZING, if there were ten stars available, 9 Elm would receive all 10 from me.
(5)Jeremy G.
Had a really nice dinner with the wife, spur of the moment. Once again, Yelp didn't let me down and helped me find a real gem. Owners behind the bar and in the kitchen. Good beer selection, friendly staff and terrific food. I can't remember quite what we ate but I do know we cleaned our plates(not saying much for me but still).

Everything I have ever tried here has been perfect - from the bread and garlic olive oil to the appetizers, entrees, and desserts. All of the food is fresh and perfectly executed. The menu is bistro fare, which is unique for a downtown Danvers restaurant. Atmosphere is casual but the food makes it feel fancy. It's a small restaurant so I would recommend reservations, especially on the weekends. It's safe to say this is my favorite restaurant!

Best dinner we have had on the east coast!
(5)D S.
the crabcakes were not so good --taste a bit like like tartar sauce. Hold the mayo please......woohooo. The seafood chowder was ok, the service was very good. The cod dish was very good and the shrimp dish with pasta was okay.
(3)Paul D.
I have eaten here a few times now and it is excellent. The Osso Buco was the best I have ever had. The owners are awesome people. Very friendly and outgoing. The scallops were awesome. I asked for them with the risotto & wild mushroom which was incredible. The chowder was exceptional as well. Overall, a great place.

Our first visit was this past Saturday, but we will be back. We arrived at 7:30, having found easy parking on the street outside, and were greeted promptly by a very friendly waitress. All the tables were taken so we decided to eat at the bar and were perfectly happy. To start, my husband had the Bistro Salad and I had the Beet Carpaccio; both were excellent. For a main course he had the Grilled Sirloin of Beef, which was done exactly as requested and had a nicely seared outside and a great house steak sauce. As noted by a previous reviewer, the mashed potatoes were addictive. I had the Double-Cut Pork Chop with a cider reduction, which was juicy and delicious. The accompanying winter squash was sweet and delicate and a wonderful complement to the pork. We split a very rich Creme Brulee for dessert and you could see the fresh vanilla in the bottom of the dish -- a perfect finish. Presentation on every dish was absolutely beautiful. The atmosphere was warm and intimate and it was easy to have a conversation. Service was attentive without hovering and we never felt rushed. A really nice night out.
(5)Peter O.
A very nice "little" restaurant. The decor is contemporary and simple. The service is friendly and enthusiastic. The food is a nice mixture and subtle sauces and seasonings are wonderful. The Trouffled Potatoes were surprising. Definitely plan to revisit this place soon.

fantastic, great wait staff, fantastic wine list

after reading the stellar reviews my boyfriend and i HAD to try 9 Elm over the weekend. we showed up 30 minutes early and were seated immediatly (with a parking space right out front none the less) our waitress was very attentive and sweet. it was her first night and she did FANTASTIC. she brought us bread and oil to start and it was the best we have ever had. the bread was warm and soft and the oil had just the right amount of garlic and herbs.. delicious!! for an appetizer we got the proscuitto wrapped melon and the goat cheese/ mushroom tartlet... both were fantastic. i was secretly hoping my boyfriend wouldnt like the tartlet so i wouldnt have to share but unfortunatly he loved it =( for our meals i got the scallops with truffle potato puree and he got the steak with the reduction and fingerling potatos... both were out of this world. i have never had better scallops in my life.. they were HUGE and so fresh and tasty that they literally melted in my mouth. the truffled potato puree was also outstanding..my boyfriend kept stealing bites of it so it became a fork battle over the plate! (he won.. sneaky bastard) for dessert i got the creme brulee and he got the brownie sundae.... mmmm both were amazing. some places burn the sugar on the creme brulee and others only cook the middle and leave the edges gritty but this was perfectly cooked the whole way around. and the bowl was super deep so there was alot of thick, creamy yumminess hidden under the crunchy carmelized topping. another perk was when i ordered a glass of wine they used a large glass and did not scimp on the serving of wine. i hate ordering a glass of wine and getting barely enough to fill a champagne flute. this was a generous portion of wine and i was not upset about it =) prices are good and the food is delicious.. we will definitly be back soon!!

4 stars, amazing, delicious, beyond expectations! I'm am so happy with this dining experience, I couldn't wait to tell everyone I know. First of all, i have yet to find a decent meal in the North Shore yet. Every restaurant is a disappointment. Either overpriced or underwhelming, until now. 9 elm st has positive reviews and i was intrigued. My wife and I were celebrating a new job and deciding to splurge. We made reservations and were seated within minutes even though we were early. Good start. I had checked out there website, but was disappointed to learn it had been changed the day before. However, our server informed us that in order to stay current, they change the menu every 6-8 weeks. The restaurant only has 11 tables so be sure to make reservations. They have an small wine list, but we absolutely loved our Riesling. The server was happy to provide refills but was never intrusive to our dining experience. Even with the smaller environment, we never felt rushed through our meals or pushed towards the door. a welcome change from dining in some of the "high end" restaurants downtown. The salads were prepared to perfection with a light layer of dressing that was never too much. While the Filet Mignon on their website was no longer available they did offer two other sirloin choices. Every question I had for our server was answered completely and politely. I had the duck breast since it was a special occasion with wild mushroom risotto and asparagus. While I had never tried the sides dishes before so have nothing to compare it to, I found them both delicious. Never too overbearing and cooked to perfection. My wife had bavette steak similar to a large steak tip was tender, cooked to a perfect medium-rare. Sadly, we had no room for the desserts which judging from our fellow diners looked fresh, tasty and so tempting. I found the size of the dining area adds to the enjoyment like meeting old friends or family. Prices were high compared to other choices in the area, but the quality is so much higher, you will be happy to pay. If you're tired of the overblown haughtiness of downtown Boston, the "chicness" of Cambridge, head up Rte 1 to Danvers. You just might have the best meal ever!

Amazing & Consistent Perfection! What else can be said for our cozy little Danvers spot. We are foodies and like exploring other spots in Boston and around the Northshore. But since 9elm, we have a new rating system. Was it "as good as 9elm". It almost never is and is the reason why we just stop in hang out at the bar and enjoy the perfectly cooked meat and seafood, great drinks and scrumptious desserts -- all at a reasonable price with a chill romantic setting. Go to 9 elm!!
(5)Roseanna g.
Found this gem when we were searching for places for my mother in laws anniversary dinner. The first time I came I had the filet mignon which was very good...tender juicy and just how it's supposed to be....on my second trip here for my own wedding anniversay dinner I had the duck! Omg that dish is just amazing I can't help but salivate every time I think of that dish! It's so delicious and I hope the duck never leaves their menu because it's one reason I keep going back! Its so hard to find a place that has duck and does it as delicious as 9 elm!
(5)Danny B.
Went here with my two sisters for my birthday dinner. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere. As soon as we walked in we were kindly greeted and brought to our table. We were then given water to start off with and some bread and dipping oil. The bread was so delicious and fluffy, you could tell it was hand made. I ordered the fillet mignon, it was delicious! I ordered it medium rare and it was cooked perfectly. The asparagus and whipped potatoes that accompanied it was delicious. And to top off the dinner, me and my sisters shared the chocolate cake and the white chocolate bread pudding. The bread pudding was amazing! Highly recommended!! Just be sure to make a reservation, in order to ensure you will get a table!

9 Elm has some of the tastiest fine dining in Danvers. But let's be real - the food in Danvers is not very good nor are there a lot of fine dining options there. This lets 9 Elm stand out for taste alone. My meal - a Golden Beet salad and Seared Duck with Bacon and Summer Squash Risotto was delicious. But I can't say it was THAT good to be worth the price I paid for it. I'm no stranger to paying high prices for a fine dining experience, but that's not what I got despite the food tasting quite good and having a nice presentation. The menu was really boring overall with nothing unique about it. It has all the basics, and keeps them very... well, basic. The only thing more boring than the menu was the decor here. Which was pretty much nothing but tables and bland walls. No color. No pop. Really just nothing. And what the hell is up with the weird curtain you have to walk in through? I guess it's supposed to give the restaurant an intimate appeal - and it does have that going for it - but instead I was expecting to see the Wizard of Oz behind the curtain as I entered. Bizarre. Worse, upon entering I was asked if I had reservations in such a manner that made me feel like I shouldn't be there without reservations. Like a "you don't have reservations?" shocked type of ask. I also saw the staff ask another couple the same way. Meanwhile, more than half of the tables were empty by the time we left at 6:30 (we arrived about 5:30). I don't doubt the place gets jammed - I tried to go before but couldn't get reservations and the wait was too long - but still. Our waitress was really nice, though. And my wife really enjoyed her cocktail. So I can't say my dinner was bad. But I wouldn't ever go here and drop $75 again for two entrees and two salads when I know I can go elsewhere and get wow factor, unique dishes, and actually leave full. I really don't understand why such a high rating here, but as I said, Danvers has some awful food compared to Beverly, Salem, and other surrounding towns. Huge disappointment.

Cozy and reasonably quiet for it's size. Good but not great. The dates wrapped in bacon are cliche but very well done and delicious. The bistro salad was ok, the dressing didn't have much flavor, I found only a few dried cranberries, but not much cheese at all. There was plenty of lettuce though! Onion soup was quite good. The pork chop was very good and they were HUGE. The pasta bolognese was delicious but maybe a tad undercooked. Even for al dente I'm not quite sure it would stick to the wall...I liked it that way but mom didn't . The desserts were are good. Definitely worth going back, and capable of a five in the right night. But the salad for me kept it down to a four....

Service Service Service.... They say that the character of a man (person) is truly tested in the face of adversity. Now if that is true for the average man-it is true ten fold for a restaurant server or bartender with a full house. I had a reservation with my family tonight and was warmly greeted at the bar. I let Sally know I had a reservation and she noted what table I would be at and to "let me know when you are ready." We made some appetizer decisions and they all arrived promptly and beautifully prepared -same goes for our entrée selections. Back to the adversity quote. A table nearby was quite clearly and loudly distressed at multiple times during their dining experience. Though I was not AT their table I can attest to the fact that they appeared to receive the same impeccable service that we received and the food delivered to their table looked so amazing that it swayed our dinner selections. The nearby party left creating quite a scene with numerous declarations of never returning, claiming to have not ordered food which we saw delivered etc. The fact is: I wasn't at their table. I would be quite interested to hear their first hand personal review of their experience. What I CAN say is: the wait staff was patient, empathetic and even AFTER they left were very diplomatic and apologetic that they could not meet their dining expectations. Anyone who has ever worked in the service industry has been in a situation where you aren't sure what you could have done better but wish you had. All I can say is that my experience was perfection and seeing the professionalism of the wait staff faced with the dilemma of a seemingly inexplicably upset guest solidified that I will be back to this establishment. Everyone can offer great service and impeccable food when things are running smoothly. To keep it together when the wheels are coming off...that is the true statement of professionalism and class.

I took my 75+ year old mother here for dinner on a Friday night at 6:00. We had a reservation. As you walk in the door, there's a weird gold curtain to walk thru, with heavy weights at the bottom so it doesn't move. I guess it's for privacy, but doesn't mix well with an old woman walking with a cane. We were seated at a small table for 2 right against the wall, next to a blasting air vent coming out of the floor, and a loud party near the window. The place was only half full at that time, but the place was extremely noisy, probably due to the wood floors, hard walls, etc.. Place is tiny, so that exacerbates the issue. It was so noisy with the party behind us that we couldn't hear each other and asked to be moved, to which they said they couldn't accommodate us. To give you an idea, Texas Road House can be noisy, but not so loud that you can't carry on a conversation at the table. 9 Elm was way louder than that. So, we ended up leaving. First time in my life that I've had to leave a restaurant due to the atmosphere. The food could be great, but I'll never find out as I won't bother going back.
(1)Tiffany L.
Probably one of the best spots in the Danvers/Peabody area. The space is a little small and I felt quite cramped at our table, but the food was delicious. We had the heirloom tomato salad and beet salad to start, then the cod (special) and salmon for our entree. I thought the salmon was cooked perfectly! The desserts were great as well - the white chocolate bread pudding was to die for and the chocolate cake was great too.
(4)Paul A.
One of our fab spots to dine at 9 Elm. Our Magnificent Seven club dines out monthly at different eateries throughout the metro Boston area. This evening we ate at the 9 Elm. From the moment we entered, we received superb service from our waitress who treated us as honored guests. The menu was excellent, featuring a choice for the most discerning. From steak, scallops, duck, pasta, chicken and nightly specials. The bread was fresh, crisp and served with oil infused with pieces of garlic. Yummy. Everyone enjoyed the servings which included appetizers, drinks and dessert. Everything cooked to perfection. I rarely give five stars. This establishment earned theirs. Congrats. Will visit again soon, hopefully. Have plenty of choices to visit and try with our club. Bon appetite at 9 Elm.
(5)Jay N.
The owner Matt is a great chef. I see him all the time purchasing fresh produce at the market next door. Fresh, simple menu with outstanding food. Never had a bad meal here. So nice to have such a great restaurant in Danvers. Delicious!
(5)Renee S.
Fabulous Fabulous Fabulous! Several times at this hidden gem, and always consistent. Service is top notch and better than most Boston 5 stars I've been too.
(4)Sonia J.
OMG! This place is amazing ... still! I've only been here 3 or 4 times over the years but we went again on Sat night. We (husband & I) only called that afternoon for a reservation. We had to go @ 5pm to get a table for 2. We both had a salad; mine was the Bibb Wedge (which was broken apart and easy to eat) which was excellent! And my husband had the Caesar which he thoroughly enjoyed; perfect sizes for 1 or you could also split (not big eaters). The bread was amazing w/ the roasted garlic dipping oil!!! We both had the swordfish special which was cooked perfectly (and we are very fussy about fresh, perfectly cooked seafood). I ate every bite and I'm not be a big eater. The portions were perfectly served. LOVE this place!!! It is small though so you definitely want to call ahead for a reservation.
(5)K M.
Great drinks and meal. We started with the mussels so tender and delicious. We then split the beat salad...yummy. I got the scallops which were sweet and cooked perfectly. My husband had the Bolognese which was amazing. We will be back. This one is a hidden gem
(5)D J.
Great beer and wine reasonably priced. Best buffalo calamari appetizer any where. Excellent swordfish special and bolognese was delicious. My favorite is the salmon or the pan seared scallops. Generous portions always cooked to perfection. Service and atmosphere outstanding!
(5)Darren J.
Great food, plus food poisoning. That sums up 9 Elm. We've eaten at 9 Elm well over a half dozen times, and the food is always excellent. But on this last visit, I got more than I bargained for--extended visits to the toilet between 2am and 3:30am, after which things settled down. I called the restaurant the next day and left a message on their voicemail indicating that I had gotten food poisoning. I made it clear I wasn't looking for anything but that I wanted to let them know this had happened. There was no response. No returned phone call, no apology, nothing. Now mind you, I was not looking for something, i.e. a comped meal or anything like that (although it would have been a gracious response). I just wanted them to know what happened, and to hopefully take corrective actions so that this didn't happen to anyone else. But given the complete lack of response, it appears that that this just wasn't a priority for them. I'm very disappointed in how this was handled by 9 Elm. I'm not sure we'll be headed back there again. UPDATE: After I posted this review, I immediately heard back from the chef/owner Matt Sadinas. As it was, he contacted me not because of my initial complaint (which was ignored), but because of this review. I'm going to do 9 Elm the favor of not embarrassing them any further by sharing the contents of the discussion. It's best to just leave it at that. We will never return to this restaurant.
(2)Duke D.
Excellent little spot in downtown Danvers. Had buffalo calimari and mussels for appetizers and the filet for dinner. Everything came out great! Couple craft beers on draft and the home made sangria is amazing. Will definitely go back.
(5)Brian C.
An intimate place, with great service and magnificent food. Started off with the onion soup and butternut squash ravioli; both were exquisite. Then there was the pan seared swordfish special, it was the best I ever had. My companion had the golden beet salad and the duck. Could not say enough about them both other than our plates were happily empty
(5)Amy Y.
Amazingly delish! My husband and I just moved back to the northshore after living in San Francisco for a decade. We have been looking for a gem of a restaurant and 9 Elm Bistro is it. Hubby got the onion soup and rated it 5 stars! We shared the blue cheese stuffed dates wrapped in bacon as well as the special lamb raviolli... Both 5 stars! I would have literally licked the raviolli plate with the pistachio pesto if I could. I got the scallops - cooked perfectly (Gordon Ramsey would be proud) with delicious mashed potatoes and veggies. - 5 stars! Hubby got the filet with the blue cheese butter - 4.5 stars only because he liked my scallops more. The service was also 5 stars as well as the ambiance. We have found our favorite place. Can't wait to come back!
(5)Domenico C.
Dinner for four on Saturday. I cannot find fault with the food or service. We had the surf and turf, the pork chop, the salmon and a special dish. Each dish was well prepared and high quality, although both the surf and the turf were somewhat on the small side. The sweet potato mash was fabulous. The buffalo calamari appetizer was superb. Calamari is so difficult to cook in a sauce without getting it gummy. But they succeeded. Well stocked bar and well made drinks, modest wine list but with good coverage. The only down side was a loud table in the middle of the restaurant. In a small place, it is hard to control the guests, but when they are quite boisterous it certainly diminishes the experience. All in all, quite good.
(4)Bill M.
A very small restaurant in the heart of Danvers. Nice bar. Good food. The pork chop was the best I ever had. The Pumpkin martini was a seasonal delight. We were in a party of four and all of us loved the food and attentive but not overwhelming service. I highly recommend 9 Elm.
(5)CJ P.
Food and drinks were great. The pork belly appetizer was prepared perfectly. Service was a little slow but I'm guessing it was because they were short staffed from the big storm.
(5)Dottie P.
Food A +, service A +. Ambience A +. Thank you for a delightful experience. XO
(5)Andrew C.
Just kinda the perfect place. Add a bunch of beer on tap and lower some entree prices a tad and it is. Stellar service. Amazing food. Great wine selecGotta make a reservation if you want a weekend. Best restaurant I've been to north of Boston.
(5)Lulu T.
I live in Marblehead and make certain my Peabody Mall based errands fall toward the later part of the day so I can stop in for a bite here. The best caesar salad w/chicken anywhere. The bread is more than amazing w/the chunks of garlic (to die for). The dishes are fabulous across the board. Atmosphere cozy and hip. Always great and personable service. I so very wish we had a gem like this in Marblehead.
(5)Scott W.
Small hole in the wall with five star dining! Everything cooked to order with exceptional service and great food and drinks! Make reservations to be safe! :-)
(5)Casey H.
Our dinner was sublime! We had a reservation but had to wait awhile because the previous tables were lingering. The waitstaff was really nice and we enjoyed a drink until our table was ready. We started with the bacon wrapped dates, sautéed shrimp and HEAVENLY butternut squash ravioli. All three were perfection, as well as delicious hot bread with roasted garlic olive oil. My fiancé ordered the filet for an entree, he absolutely loved it. I got the seared scallops, they were perfect. We took the bread pudding and creme brûlée to go. We'd give it 6 stars if we could. It was fantastic! HIGHLY recommend!!
(5)J P.
Im so happy we found this place! Husband and I were looking for a place to eat on a Saturday night and every place we called had an Hour or 2 wait so we used Siri and she gave us 9 Elm. I went in to see if they could take us and it was a small place only about 10 tables and a very small bar that seats about 8 pp. The waitress asked if we had reservations but i said no she said they were fully booked w reservations only and couldn't take us. She was very nice. I said that was too bad since we wanted to get to a movie at 8 , the other waitress heard us and said her next reservation wasn't coming until 8 so if we wanted to be quick we could take the table! So we did! Service was excellent! Food was even better! The whole experience was superb! We have already told others about this place and we will def be back. Next time we will make reservations to ensure we get a table! Fantastic restaurant!
(5)David L.
Nine Elm Gentlemen is definitely the place to bring your wife or lady friend which offers excellent food along with casual ambiance and friendly service. A bit pricey but well worth it!
(5)nancy g.
This is a favorite of ours for special occasions! Food is excellent and the wait staff so friendly. Reservations are a must.
(5)Bill P.
Went for a nice night out with a very special girl, I couldn't have found a better place... Staff was very nice, and the food was incredible... I had the appetizer special, buffalo calamari while she had the dates... Both were fantastic... For entrées she had the duck with risotto, wow so much flavor, yet so simple... And I had the filet with potatoes and vegetables... Wow is all I can say... Chef cooked the steak to perfection.. If you have a special occasion this is definitely the place to take your special someone..
(5)Kimberly K.
Still excellent. The last three times were almost as good as the first. Ambiance is tight and dark, but food and service are great.
(4)Luke G.
WOW, a 40 day wet aged New York strip for 29 bucks? Proudly sliced and cooked to perfection, better than the steaks ive had at craft and gallaghers. I found the brown butter squash ravioli underseasoned and overly saged, it could use one other sweet component to impress the common pallet. but still delicious and impressively piping hot. the blue cheese stuffed dates..umami, thanks for taking the time to perfectly dress the greens. warm chocolate cake with salted caramel was savory and just enough. The service was respectfully not overly friendly, very disciplined and proffessional. None of them including the busser stopped moving. Ok, so two things. 1. the server had no idea the steak was aged. I told her it was when i bit into it. 2. There should be a cocktail menu. If i owned that restaurant and i found out that my servers were not showing the cocktail menu to every guest, i would take them off the schedule for a month of weekends. if you dont have a cocktail menu, make one, if you have one, show everyone up front because its probably awesome. Good job. 9 elm is nearly perfect. Ill be back with friends.
(5)Henry H.
This place is a hidden gem on the Northshore. Living just a few miles away, I can't believe I have not been here, and I will surely be back soon. Waiting for a table when we made a reservation wasn't something that I was excited about, but the way we were greeted at the door made me feel OK about waiting for a seat in this cozy restaurant. The service was great, top notch dining with a relaxed vibe. The Duck was amazing and they served my wife the largest portion of Scallops I have seen. This was a great way to start New Years Eve!
(5)Betsy R.
My friend and I were in for dinner tonight. We had a reservation. We were treated rudely from the moment we walked in the door. Our waitress acted like it was beneath her to wait on us. She never made eye contact but rather seemed to look right over us. She was not friendly and spent very little time at our table. Things were deposited on our table with very little care - our check was actually tossed onto the table. The food was delicious but we were insulted by the rude service. I live in Danvers and this was my first time at 9 Elm. I will not return and will never recommend this restaurant.
(1)Sharon B.
One of our favorite places, ever (although we might be a little biased, explained more below). We were seeking out some nice restaurants on the North Shore for possible rehearsal lunch/dinner places. We first came here in February 2011, and we still remember the meal over two years later...I am still tasting the corn butter sauce that came with my scallops (and that has not been replicated by any other restaurant). My husband got the filet mignon, we shared the duck confit for an app and the creme brulee for the dessert...I do remember the creme brulee being a little disappointing. Based on our wonderful dinner there, we booked the place for our rehearsal lunch the day before our wedding in May 2011. Since they're usually only open for dinner, they opened the restaurant especially for us that day with 11 people. Needless to say, everyone raved about the food and the very intimate atmosphere, which was perfect for us. So although we have a special reason to love this place, we consistently compare other high-end restaurants to the ambiance and food quality that we received at 9 Elm...and we find that other restaurants continue to fall short. Can't wait to go back for our future anniversary dinners!

Absolutely delicious! Not cheap, but within acceptable range for the quality of food. Make a reservation - it's small and cozy, and if you walk in you might not be able to get a seat (very small bar, too). It's my go-to if I'm looking for a nice meal at a small restaurant on the North Shore.

LOVE having such an excellent restaurant right down the street! This place is a little pricey, but it really is very reasonable for the quality of the food you get and the nice atmosphere. It is very small, dim, and quiet, perfect for a special occasion or date night. The crab cake is to die for, the best we've ever had, and the filet was cooked perfectly and was just amazing--definitely rivals the pricier steakhouses here and in Boston. They do have some less expensive drink options too, and the house wine was very good. We will definitely return here in the future to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Note that they're closed Sunday and Monday and are only open for dinner the other days of the week.

Ate here for the first time ever last night, and chose the restaurant based on Yelp reviews as im not familiar with the Danvers area at all but wanted to find a place near where our friends live. Here's a breakdown of one of the best little places in the area! Appetizers: Boyfriend and i ordered the Butternut Squash Ravioli to share, as well as the Bistro Salad to share. The couple we were with ordered the Ravioli to share and a Caesar to share. The kitchen divided each couple's salads onto two plates without us even asking - a nice gesture that did not go unnoticed. Salads were nothing fancy, but tasted good - i mean, its salad the one thing most of us can make good at home and i never expect to be blown away by salad, i just like it fresh and colorful which this was. The Ravioli was everything everyone here said!! Two huge raviolis that were STUFFED and i mean STUFFED. The brown butter sauce was very flavorful and aromatic. A definite do-over although i am intrigued by the Date appetizer and may try that next time. Entree: Boyfriend ordered the strip steak special and i had the filet mignon. Both were excellent, steaks cooked properly as ordered. The mashed potato was a bit runnier than i prefer, but it didnt stop me from cleaning my plate. Came with nice carrots and green beans that were crisp and not mushy, thus keeping their color. Portions were generous. Our friends also ordered the filet mignon and the duck. Alll reports were positive and their plates were cleaned too!! Dessert: We shared the warm chocolate cake with salted caramel sauce and our friends had the creme brulee. The old me (ive recently lost 23 pounds) would have found the desserts too small for sharing, but the new me felt satisifed with sharing a dessert as sized/presented and i definteily left full. General: We had made a reservation based on the reviews/write ups online that this place is small. we were able to get a friday nigth 730 reservation as we had called about a month ahead. Not sure it requires this much advance notice, but im a planner by nature. Jillian was our waitress and she was fantastic. Attentive, there when we needed her but not intrusive and didnt rush us. Courses were appropraitely spaced out, hot, you could tell tehy were cooked to order. Our drinks were never empty she kept them coming. The pre-dinner bread was YUMMY, and more was offered once we killed the basket and we didnt even have to ask for more (i hate places that cheap out on bread, this was not one of them!). Served with nice roasted garlic and oil. A fantastic night/meal out and we will be back!!!!

The only reason I am giving this place 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the size of the restaurant. It felt cozy at times, then crowded other times as the crowd waiting for tables has no where to sit but just about on top of you. So the food...I started out with a roasted yellow beet salad. It was exactly as I had expected, except for one thing. They gave me entirely way too many beets! It could have been an entree. They were nicely sweet, and the vinegary dressing complimented the light goat cheese and crunchy roasted walnuts. Delicious. I next ordered the Filet. Cooked perfectly. Although not a prime steak, the price for this dish was appropriate I thought given the surrounding area. The potato and veggies that came with it were also cooked perfectly. My GF loved the ceasar and her filet as well. The food was just one wonder of this little place. The service was spot on. The entire restaurant had only two waitresses and a couple bussers, but we never had to wait for a drink or wait for our plates to be taken. I will be back. I hope they relocate to a bigger place. They can do much more business.

This place is a hidden gem. Very small and intimate. You definitely need to call ahead on the weekends. I called at 10 am and couldn't get seated till 9 pm for table of 2. My one complaint is they don't use Open Table app the reserve a table. For starters we got the squash ravioli. The we're so sweet and delicous. The onion soup was very good to, it was 10 degrees so it hit the spot. For dinner we got the roasted duck with bacon risotto. Great! And the scallops and white truffle mashed potatoes. Again great. This resturant would stand out in Boston, never mind downtown Danvers. Not traffic and much better parking. Can't wait to go back.

I went there tonight with my boyfriend. We tried to go here last week, however we didn't have reservations and they were completely booked. This time we were smart and made reservations. Good thing too, because when we first got there every other table was taken. Our table was ready and waiting for us when we got there about 10 minutes early. It was delicious!! We got a bottle of red wine, french onion soup which was good and butternut ravioli which was very good. For our entrees we got the grilled filet mignon and the pan roasted duck breast. Both were very flavorful, but out of the two, we both liked the duck better. The filet gets a 9/10, so it was very good, however the duck got a 10/10 from us. For dessert we had profiteroles and crème brûlée. Both were good, the crème brûlée was nice and light and the profiteroles had coconut ice cream and chocolate sauce, which tasted a lot like an almond joy. The atmosphere was cozy and romantic. Our waitress was very nice and the service was great! We will definitely be going back again!! We highly recommend it and are already planning another trip.
(5)Keri M.
Tried it for the first time last night and will definitely be returning, top of the line food and service in a cozy setting. Just make sure you make reservations in advance!
(5)Monique G.
Warm and inviting ambiance, fresh and creative menu, high quality. Prices are reasonable. French onion soup is the best in the North Shore. This is one of our favorite go to hot spots.
(5)Kenji G.
Really had a stunning night at 9 Elm. Enjoyed their pork chop, crab cake and swordfish. Chocolate cake dessert was excellent. Truly one of the best restaurants in the area for me. Its small but i like small restaurants.
(5)Jeff R.
Been meaning to give this place a shout out. Went twice over the Summer. Small menu that is unique. Everything is sooooooo good. Can't wait to go back.
(5)Ken S.
Another visit to 9 Elm and another great meal!
(5)Karen B.
Fabulous-as always! Great service-good approachable wine list. Order something grilled-and with their homemade BBQ sauce. So yummy-without the drive to Boston!
(5)Lisa S.
Easily one of the best meals i've ever had! I've only been once but can't wait to go back. *Slow Roasted Golden Beet Salad - great light, fresh salad. *Great Hill Blue Cheese Stuffed Medjool Dates - these may not be everyone's cup of tea but i thought the flavor on these were amazing! sweet, smokey, carmelized. yum! *Pan Seared Scallops - I had the scallops and they were the biggest, yet tasiest scallops i've ever had. I was stuffed so i took the remainder of my meal home and it was literally just as good when reheated the following day. *Artichoke Crusted Salmon - i didn't try this personally but 3 of my friends ordered it and it looked phenomenal. A huge portion of salmon with the artichoke 'crust' being more of a stuffing on top of the fish. They raved about how amazing it was and i will definitely be trying it next time i go back. 9 Elm is only open for dinner and is a pretty small restaurant (maybe 10 tables at most?), so reservations are key. We had a great and attentive waiter who didn't rush us, even on a busy Friday night.
(5)Joseph P.
What a great find. My wife found 9 Elm in Northshore Mag and boy did we love it. Wonderful ambiance and a friendly staff greeted us upon arrival. We had a great table and ordered drinks while perusing the menu. For apps, I ordered the sesame crusted yellow fin tuna. The coconut wasabi was so different and delicious. My wife ordered the beet salad and said it was delicious. We both ordered the pan seared scallops with white truffle potato puree. The combination was exceptional with the sweetness of the scallops contrasted by the delicious flavor of truffles. Service was perfect and unhurried. Without a doubt, a restaurant we will continue to frequent.
(5)Kurt S.
Great hospitality, great food. I'm a fan!
(4)john g.
Had dinner there last night, we've been to 9 Elm several times and it's always been very good. Great atmosphere and the service was good as well. Ordered the beet salad and stuffed dates appetizers, both tasty. My GF had the scallops and I ordered the duck breast - both cooked well and very flavorful. We were too full for dessert but they looked good as well...maybe next time. Nice wine and beer list too. If you haven't bee there - give it a try. You won't be disappointed.
(4)Gregory P.
Went here for Valentine's Day. It absolutely lived up to its hype and earned it's 5-star overall YELP rating. We both got the filet and they were both excellent and cooked perfectly. It wasn't the best steak I've ever had, but it was the best I've ever had on the North Shore. It was served on top of delicious mashed potatoes and veggies. It had some lobster on the top as well that was quite good (and I don't even like lobster). The salads were great too (caesar and an almond/cranberry type-salad). The restaurant is very small (only 12-15 tables or so), so you'll probably want to make a reservation for weekend nights. Highly, highly recommended. Easily the best restaurant in Danvers.
(5)Kristen B.
Excellent restaurant. We took friends here last night and everyone had a fabulous experience. We started with the stuffed dates, beet salad, caesar salad, and shrimp app. All were fantastic. I had the steak special, tender and cooked to perfection with seriously the best steak sauce I've ever had. Hubby had the chicken, and our friends had the double cut pork chop and filet. Everyone licked their plates clean. We were stuffed, but managed to share the creme brule and white chocolate bread pudding for dessert. Both delicious. Very nice wine list, and full bar. The martini list looked awesome - something to try next time! Kudos to the owner/chef!
(5)Kat S.
This is my favorite restaurant. Every time I have friends in town, I bring them here. Yes, it's small and you need reservations but I think it's very charming and intimate. I've never had a bad meal here. The filet is cooked perfectly but my favorite is the bolognese- it is absolutely delicious and the leftovers are even better! All of the desserts have been very tasty and filling as well. The waitstaff is funny and attentive and the owners are always there and visible. I'm even hoping to have my rehearsal dinner here someday. I can't say enough great things about this restaurant.
(5)M C.
Small hole in the wall, you'd walk by it a hundred times, but a hidden gem. Great food, cool atmosphere, great date/spouse away night. Good brews on tap, haven't been let down yet with food, been there 3x. I'll go back.
(5)Cheryl N.
By far the best restaurant on the North Shore! Make your reservations early!
(5)patty b.
I can't wait to go back! The rigatoni A+ (I lamented FOR DAYS that I left my doggie bag at the restaurant. I do this all the time - I am a bit absent minded. This is the first time I ever cared, much less talked about it for days!) The bread A+ The wine list A (A few more chardonnays, please) The iceberg salad A+ Everybody at my table was very pleased with their order. I really can't wait to go back, and make this place a regular stop.
(5)Sarah T.
This is our "go-to" spot for dinner and it is always excellent from start to finish. The bread is amazing. Last week I had the swordfish with risotto & carrots/haricot vert. Phenomenal. The beet salad was perfectly balanced and easily split between two of us. Tried two of their new martinis which were strong and not cloyingly sweet. In the past, the steaks have always been perfectly cooked and the bacon/corn risotto is something I dream about.
(5)Neal D.
I was looking on yelp for places to eat for my birthday and I saw this place which had a solid five (at the time) and I really wanted to go here. We went on my birthday 6/13/2012 (I know I am lazy writing reviews) we made reservations and I would suggest it as there are not a lot of tables and I think the bar is rather small, But not sure as I didn't look in that direction. The food was out of this world. The crab cake was really good and cake like. I got the salmon which was awesome and the artichoke crust on top was really good. So I really liked it and I would suggest if you go to make reservations. I would go again!
(5)Mike D.
There's NO WAY this place should have 5 stars....that's mind-boggling. We had 8pm reservations for 4ppl on a Friday night and we waited for 15 minutes with an open 4-top right in front of us. That table was seated with two people 10 minutes after us but they still ended up getting their appetizers 15 minutes before us. Make sense? Nope....not to me either. We waited at least 30 minutes for 3 appetizers and they weren't even that good....buffalo calamari, sautéed shrimp (which had 2 shrimp in it for 3 ppl eating it, after I asked waitress how many in there and she said 3....lame), and a salad for one of the ladies. Appetizers were forgettable. The entrees were good at best...ravioli was undercooked and chewy, veal porterhouse was decent, pork was actually really good, and the steak was fine. The desserts were good. So in summary....No bar scene, ambience is stale, service was underwhelming (and for a 10-table restaurant this is unacceptable), and food was good not great. I won't be rushing back.

This is the type of place that we all wish our neighborhoods have: cosy, casual, with friendly service, and very good food & beer on tap. Located in downtown Danvers center, close to the Liberty Tree Mall (& a nice place to stop before a movie at the nearby theatres), and easily accessible from 128 N/S. Both times we have dined here, we were struck at how good the food was -- it reminds me of many of the neat little spots located in Brookline, Cambridge or Arlington. They had wonderful fish chowder - more of a meal than a starter: with large pieces of haddock, mussels, and shrimp. We also tried the filet, which was a generous portion, cooked to medium rare (a real medium rare), and accompanied by seasonal veggies and great mashed potatoes. The lobster ravioli app. was outstanding - very large chunks of lobster, and the pasta was cooked al dente...the sauce was a light, sweet corn/cream one..excellent. Good wine list, and good beer on tap...the prices are more like you'd see in someplace like Marblehead, but so worth it for the quality..I recommend this place as a detour, or a date night out, or a fun time with a group of friends...
(4)Krista C.
Absolutely unbelievable! My all time favorite restaurant - whether it be for a romantic night out or a casual glass of wine and app at the bar, 9 Elm is our go-to place.
(5)Paula B.
Made reservations last minute but they were able to seat us. The waitstaff was very attentive, friendly and professional. The food was very good but the menu was not that exciting. Typical American fare that you find in other places. Probably wouldn't seek it out again unless I was in the area. Definitely worth a visit. You may like it better than we did.
(3)brad c.
What a find! They were a little busy, and we had to wait, but holy cow that was the best meal I had on a 10 day trip to the east coast. Best french onion soup of my life. Note to owner. Hire someone to clear tables! Your staff is overworked. It would be a 4 star review if the food wasn't so awesome. Expect some service delays due to under-staffing.
(5)Lorie T.
I simply love this place! I have been there three times and the food never disappoints. Do yourself a favor and go there!
(5)Greg H.
Another well deserved 5 Star Rating. Pork Chops were incredible and @RMsantosuosso said the salmon was outstanding as well. The service was great and the drinks were very good. Meal portions were large enough to fill me up which is quite a statement. Would go back again any day.
(5)rosann s.
We were going to a show at the North Shore Music Theatre and used YELP to try and find a nice place to eat in the vicinity of the Theatre. We found 9 Elm and decided, why not?! Well, I am certainly glad we tried it!! Had a fantastic filet mignon, with a potato puree and mixed veggies ... sooo good! The place is intimate and clean. The portions are a good size. The service was great! I would definitely recommend for a date night!!
(5)Jelly B.
Pretty good -- I expected a little more. The hostess? definitely could have been friendlier. Even a smile would have helped. I got the artichoke salmon over lentils, it was very good. Another person in my party got the porterhouse which was good but cold. The beet salad was good. Often in small restaurants the owner will check on the tables but this did not happen here. I had a reservation, it is a small restaurant. The room temperature was inconsistent; cold, then warm, then cold again.
(3)Rosaleen D.
I have eaten several meals here and each time I go there the dinner is perfect. I have had beef, seafood and even chicken (I never order chicken at restaurants) and all the food is exquisite. The food is simple, but it is always cooked perfectly. I have taken business guests here from out of town and they were all highly impressed at the awesome food at this tiny little restaurant in downtown Danvers.
(5)Tom G.
Good food but the owner/chef has an attitude problem. If you go in or call at the wrong time for information, reservations or gift certificates, he may make you feel like you are being a bother. Beware: if you request a window seat you may be told yes on the phone and no when you show up in person. Because of the recent problems with service I have been taking my family a mile down the road to a pricier restaurant that greets me with a smile and never makes me feel bad about asking about specials or making a reservation.
(2)Lexi B.
This restaurant caught my eye because of all the fabulous reviews so I thought why not? Well 9 Elm did not disappoint! The service was fast, friendly, and efficient. Our waitress was never far so our ever need was catered to with a smile. I started with the butternut ravioli and my only complaint was that there wasn't more! I could have eaten it all evening. Then my mum and I both had the filet which was cooked to perfection and literally melted in our mouths. The potatoes were creamy and rich and the veggies tasty and well steamed. Dessert though was my favorite part. I had the creme brûlée and my mum had the lemon tart. As we both floated off into dreamy sugar wonderland it was clear this meal had been a wild success. Go if you can this place should not be missed!
(5)Rebecca S.
Definitely worthy of five stars. Not only was the food incredible, but our waitress was super sweet also. If you haven't been there before its worth checking out. I'll definitely be back again soon!
(5)Me B. M.
Thanks to Yelp, I went to 9 Elm and am incredibly happy I did. This is the kind of food I love to eat: honest, fresh, and simple, with perfect technique and no gimmicks. Overall an excellent meal. About 10 tables and a small bar in a comfortable and traditional, relaxed setting. Service was superb, attentive, friendly, down to earth, knowledgeable. Very nice beer list with a couple of unexpected items like Left Hand Milk Stout from Colorado. Did not really pay attention to the wine list, but I can say they had a full page of bottles and about 10 by the glass. The bread was an excellent crusty french bread served with a roasted garlic olive oil--complete with some sweet and delicious garlic cloves. Appetizers were likewise all fantastic, generous portions and priced $6-$10 range. The butternut squash bisque was a light version, letting the squash do the work of providing flavor and body instead of weighing it down with too much cream or butter. I could eat this every day. Entrees are very well priced at $19-25. The pork was an impossibly thick chop that was cider brined and served with a wonderful sweet-savory glaze and sauce--apple rosemary goodness. It took real artistry to simultaneously create a perfect glaze, a perfect sear, and cook to a perfect temperature. The fillet was equally excellent. Huge meat portions and normal to generous starch portions. The only complaint I would have is that I could have used more veggies. They served 2 baby carrots, 3 asparagus, and 2 string beans. If I can count the number of string beans, there aren't enough! I am a big believer in a more balanced meal, where the veggies are not just an obligatory afterthought.
(5)Jim A.
I chose 9 Elm based on reviews seen on Yelp and confirmed by tripadvisor. This is a wonderful gem in Danvers. The decor is tasteful, classic yet has a modern feel. But most important the food and the service were both excellent. Everything on the menu looked appealing. We had the apple cider glazed pork with au gratin potatoes.
(5)Patrik C.
Attentive waitstaff, delicious food and a wonderful atmosphere. Actually I don't think delicious does justice to the food I devoured last night. I ate til I was slightly sick and then I ordered desert and finished my mother's desert. The dishes were inventive and original in many ways. Most importantly they were executed well. Make a reservation. DATES WRAPPED IN BACON, notice the cap lock, not an accident.
(5)Eric R.
This little bistro is fantastic. They take a very simplistic approach with the decor and the menu selection, but the quality of food and service are exceptional. I had the duck which is probably the best I've ever had with an amazing risotto (with bacon!) and it had this orange-soy reduction that's the best thing in the world to have on tender duck. All of our dishes were of the utmost freshness and quality. Sally was our server and was very sweet and helpful. The desserts looked fantastic too, the profiteroles were outstanding. I will definitely be heading back very soon!
(5)AK S.
Farm-fresh, gourmet cuisine in the heart of Danvers. I was back visiting Mom last week and ate here 2x in one week. This is a San Francisco-caliber restaurant for food - in the middle of the North Shore, go figure. The meat selections and cuts are prime, the chef knows what she is doing and the staff offers exceptional service. Menu is small and served perfectly. Everything down to the vegetables are cooked beautifully. Portions are hearty but not overwhelming. The Homemade bread with garlic olive oil served to every table is addictive. Mushroom Goat cheese Tartlette appetizer - big enough for two, comes with a green salad - delicious. Heirloom tomato salad - (huge) the larger heirlooms were not as 'ripe' but still delicious. They split this in two for us and it was way more than enough for an appetizer. Filet mignon - cooked beautifully, melt in your mouth. Sauce is delicious, mashed potatoes more so. Duck - This is the BEST cooked, served duck I have ever had. Skin thin & crispy, meat cooked perfectly, cut the correct way as well to offer steak-like consistency. Their butcher knows what he is doing. The garlic burgandy sauce with the Duck is OUTSTANDING. Risotto pairing works, but risotto is not wow, just basic risotto. Halibut over white bean, tomato broth. Fresh & delicious. Again fish cooked to perfection. Vegetable selection might as well as walked off the farm to the plates. Mmmmm Every meal is a work of art. Can not wait to go back for just dessert! Love that they squeezed a bar in there, gives it a homey feel and allows me to go and eat alone. Dining layout is slightly off but works. Honest, this is the best food I have had in the Boston area in ages. Better then the Blue Ox!
(5)Kipp J.
Food it is yummy Steak, pork, fish, ravioli Thanks to you 9 Elm Truly a delightful dinner. The 4 of us spread out and attacked the menu. Salads and bacon wrapped dates to start off. Seafood chowder (more bisque-like), skirt steak special, artichoke, fontina ravioli and pork chop au poivre. Finished with a shared pound cake! Awesome! Truly flavorful and well designed. Only thing close to an issue would be a tad sweet on the reductions.
(5)Scott P.
a very good find in Danvers. please visit often and make this place a fixture for a long time. We had dinner with our freinds who visit on a regular basis and we were impressed with everything we ordered. lets talk bread first fresh crusty and served with a nice olive oil. the tuna appetizer was high quality the veal scallopini and salmon were generous portions and loaded with quility flavors. wine was on the pricey side per bottle but there were a few gems on the list. We had the Justin Cabernet. our waiter Sally was excellent too
(4)Paul D.
I heard great things about 9 Elm and tried a number of times to get in but was always booked. Finally we scheduled a night two weeks in advance and our expectations were high. That was probably a contributing factor but unfortunately I found it all disappointing. It's small but rather uncomfortable as our party of four barely fit at the table as we were attended to by a wait staff of only average capabilities and rather unenthusiastic. The food was good, not stellar and rather uninspired; fortunately it was supported with a decent wine list. I'd go there again but it's not worth the wait. Maybe a week night is a better choice. It's a good restaurant but hardly worth "Best of the North Shore", as recently reported.
(3)Geoff M.
Just excellent, excellent cuisine. This 12 table restaurant features freshly prepared, fine foods in a homey, tasteful setting. I had the double cut pork chop with au gratin potatoes, Meg had the filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes. Both were fantastic. Dessert was bread pudding, which was just OK, and profiteroles, which were perfect. Coffee was brewed to order, to ensure freshness. Overall, attention to detail was apparent throughout 9 Elm. The dishes were all prepared with care, seasoned perfectly, and were simple enough that the quality of the meats was apparent, yet the flavors were still stunning. Service was excellent as well. Water glasses were never empty, and menu suggestions were excellent when asked for. One of the best dinners I've ever had.
(5)Leanne H.
Absolutely delicious bits of cow. (I had a filet mignon.) I couldn't identify what the sauce was, but it was great. The mashed potatoes were creamy & the vegetables were cooked well - not too soggy and not too crunchy. To finish up, I had a pretty good flour-less chocolate cake for dessert. Cost was impressive in a good way - it's rare to have that quality of food for those prices. The waitress was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was nice, but casual. The building is very small (a room with a dozen or so tables and a bar in the back), but we went early and avoided any crowds. I recommend this restaurant and would go here again.
(5)Melissa A.
Loved it! My BF and I came here for dinner and were so pleased. We already knew the food would be good from word of mouth... and because we know the owner! But the bistro really surpassed our expectations. The atmosphere is casual but still intimate (maybe 20 tables). The servers were friendly and helpful in suggesting the best dishes ... and the food was absolutely delish! We shared a caesar salad (only $7 but still big enough to split) and for dinner my BF had the filet mignon and I had the swordfish special (which should be a regular menu item, it was that good) and we ate literally every bite. The filet was AMAZING. We shared the cherry bing brownie with butter pecan ice cream, so yum. Prices are very moderate, apps/salads in the $7-$10 range, dinners topped out at $26 I think, beer only $4 and wine around $8-$10 per glass. Everything was perfect and I can't wait to go back.

This is a very good restaurant, and a welcome addition to Danvers. I took my wife here for her birthday, and it was a meal well deserving of that occasion. The restaurant is nice and intimate, and we were greeted by a friendly hostess who immediately seated us. Out waitress was near impeccable - very friendly (but not too friendly) and checked on us just the right number of times. We started with a beet salad and crab cake. The beet salad was very good, and had a great combination of flavors. The crab cake, however, was the best crab cake I have had in my life - no exaggeration. Of course, crab cakes aren't something you have hundreds of (unlike, say, pizza), but even so, these were still remarkable. They were wide and thin instead of small and plump, the crab inside was incredibly creamy, and the breading was perfect. For the entree, we both ordered the filet steak with mashed potatoes, vegetables, and what I think was a red wine reduction. The meat was excellent quality and seasoned in a way that really brought out the taste of the meat, instead of masking it. The sauce with it was delicious and went very well with the creamy mashed potatoes. The vegetable medley also really added to the meal, instead of just an afterthought. For desert we had a flourless chocolate torte and white chocolate bread pudding. The torte had a deep chocolate flavor, and was our favorite by far. To be honest though, the bread pudding was a bit of a disappointment, maybe partially because the waitress said they were known for it. It lacked in flavor and I couldn't taste even a hint of white chocolate. Also, the texture was much more solid than I'm used to for bread pudding. Still, the rest of the meal and service were all superior enough to still give five stars. I look forward to returning to 9 Elm again in a few months and am excited to see what they have on their menu next time.

Hands down best fine dining experience in Danvers, on the north shore. Make reservations because it's that good! Matt and Jean provide a first class experience. Great to impress a date or just unwind with good company.
(5)Mike B.
Quickly became my favorite local restaraunt. Food, atmosphere and service are all excellent in this intimate cozy setting. Great value, super convenient location.
(5)Kay B.
Rich, decadent sauces done right. Worth the price, worth the wait, worth the crowd - just to tuck into a portion of their delectable risotto. Ugh! Best place for a rewarding night out, or casual date.
(5)Moe L.
Fantastic Place...Great food and Service. We liked it so much that we had a wedding rehersal dinner for 25 tthere this past weekend. It was awesome...Thanks to Matt and staff for the awesome experience at our special occasion . Moe L.

Went here for dinner. Placed reservations and had no issues getting in. Tables are very close together. Ordered salmon with artichoke crust. It was perfect. Came with some roasted veggies and asparagus. Awesome. A bit on the expensive side, but for the atmosphere and the food, well worth it. They did take my AmEx card.

This is a great restaurant, superb food, wonderful waitstaff fair price for what we had....why not 5? well it is a little small and we felt a bit crammed in , but that is about the only thing that didn't Wow us. We started with the butternut squash raviolis and crabcake...good Lord those pillows of joy were intoxicating and the crabcake with the chipotle aioli...es muy bien! ..my wife and i both had the NY Sirloin with a port wine reduction I had Yukon Gold mashed and she a potato galette (sp)...most excellent..and my adventurous 14 year old daughter had the pan seared Duck special in a blueberry port reduction with a superb side of cous cousand it was good! we finsihed with cappucinos and profiteroles and vanilla bean creme brulee..they were delicious but in hind sight the profiteroles would have been enough for the three of us can't wait to go back with some friends!.

What a wonderful surprise. Cozy, delicious, excellent service, nice energy...felt welcome. When was the last time your server told you he or she "enjoyed serving you"? I will be a regular from now on! Be sure to make reservations on weekends!

In a city that is filled with chain restaurants, this little bistro was a really pleasant surprise. We were greeted at the door by the co-owner, who remembered that, when I'd made the reservation, I was anxious about getting to the movie on time. She asked if we were still going and said, "I'll tell my husband to make sure your dishes are prompt." We had the butternut squash raviolis and the bacon-wrapped dates for appetizers. These were delicious little bundles of flavor. (I don't usually like bacon, but the fruitiness of the dates offset any sharpness perfectly.) Highly recommend. For entrées, we had the pan-seared duck breast and the pan-seared scallops. Both were wonderful. The duck was flavorful and came on a very tasty bed of mushroom risotto. The scallops were seared so perfectly, we actually admired how hard it was to get them that perfect. Our waitress was extremely attentive, but not annoyingly so. She was always there to refill our water and take the dishes. We never felt rushed, but never were waiting or anxious. Got out of there with plenty of time to head to the movies. The wines were great and the prices were almost disturbingly low. The evening was a delight and we'll definitely be back.

Very disappointing! First, I ordered a lemon drop martini and the martini was warm. I guess they were low on ice...really? My husband ordered the steak that the waitress recommended and it was terrible. It was overcooked and all you could taste was the sauce on it which tasted like A-1 sauce. Told the waitress he was really disappointed in it and she asked if he would like to take it home. NO! I didn't like it! She still charged us for the meal. I won't be returning there!!

Absolutely incredible food and service. Totally worth the price, which was $100 after tip (includes appetizer, 2 entrees, dessert, 2 cups coffee and a glass of wine). We will definitely make this one of our go-to places for a 'date night'!!

Yelp rocks and so does 9 Elm American Bistro. I would not have found one without the other and what a spectacular treat! Cozy restaurant, love the atmosphere, my cousin and I were lucky enough to find room at the bar to eat, reservations recommended! The swordfish dish I had was the best piece of fish I can recall eating. Served over spinach risotto and roasted vegetables.... the easiest way to put it is each bite was heavenly and I look forward to going back.

I love this place! Been many times. It started out great, and if anything, has even improved. Extremely nice staff. It's not a huge place, so reservations are definitely recommended. If you like duck, give it a try ... I like it so much, it's hard for me to try something new. And, pretty much all of the appetizers are spectacular.

Um...what is the fuss about? The good news, it was not bad. And service was good. Now for the bad news, the food was nothing to write home about. And flavors felt heavier than necessary. Not impressed.

Love 9 elm ! Cozy, great service and a superb dining experience every time. Highly recommend this hidden gem! Personal favorite: the crab cake appetizer and the filet mignon.

Excellent service, terrific food and pleasant decor. Menu was limited, yet all of the options looked tantalizing. Creme brûlée was exceptional. Tempura shrimp appetizer was scrumptious, and the rigatoni was too. Fine selection of wines and ales. Highly recommended.

I loved this little place in town that's been needing it for a long time. Thank you Matt and Jean for a wonderful meal and Jessica for great service! I just wish it was organic. Happy 2 year anniversary.

You don't get any better then this. Service, Incredible food, family service by professionals. Fantastic. We are eating our way through the menu as a life plan! Crab cakes here are incredible. Sirloin is fantastic. The sword special is outlandish. Sea Scallops are great. The Lamb....ah the Lamb.... It's got to say something for a place when you get your tax return and think.."ok well , how many times can we eat at 9 elm for this?"

REALLY GOOD!!! I've now been here twice, and both times the food was excellent. It's a tiny little place, so make sure to get reservations for peak times. The white chocolate bread pudding with caramel sauce was positively heavenly.

9 Elm is the perfect neighborhood spot. The food is always consistent and amazing. I have tried so many items off the menu and have never been let down by any of them. The owners (Matt and Jean) are fantastic. Matt only uses the freshest ingredients and it shows in the taste of the meal. The wait staff is fun and attentive. I highly recommend going there for dinner for a special occasion or "just because".

I was in Danvers on a business trip and went here for dinner based on the Yelp reviews of it. They didn't disappoint. The exterior of the restaurant was kinda dark and I wasn't sure that it was even open, but I went up to it anyway and found that it was. My good fortune. I started off with the seafood chowder, which was absolutely amazing. I'm not a huge seafood person but it was unbelievably good. I would have been satisfied having gotten two bowls of it instead of one bowl and an entree. I ate it with the bread that was on the table and it was fabulous. For my entree, I had the scallops, which was a generous portion (5 scallops) of large scallops sitting atop a bed of truffle-oil-infused mashed potatoes. The potatoes were a bit rich for me (in a good way) so I didn't end up eating most of them. The scallops were pretty much perfect and delicious. They also came with some asparagus and miscellaneous vegetables which were ok, but the stars of the entree were definitely the scallops. For dessert...well, I'll have to see about that next time. By the time it got to dessert, I didn't have any room left, so I passed. I would direct others here if they happen to be in Danvers; an excellent small restaurant based on my one experience.

For Danvers, Massachusetts this place is a must try. I was lured in by all the 5 star reviews and the fact that it has been around since 2008 or so. Surprisingly, only 4 photos on yelp thus far. I attempted to triple that this visit. The place was easy to find but very tiny. They only have a few tables and a small bar. YOU NEED A RESERVATION. Glad I did that earlier in the day. A 5-top table by the window was ready to go when we got there. They have a nice wind curtain that surrounds the immediate entrance which helps keep guest tables free of draft. Ingenuous!! The service was perfect. The food was perfect. Not one complaint and that's rare for me!! The specials are on the chalkboard. Today was a mustard crusted lamb sirloin or a swordfish. Not too interested in either so I stuck with the much hyped fillet and was not disappointed. Wonderful place. Wish there were more like this back home.

Matt and Jean run a wonderful restaurant and my Husband and I always have an enjoyable night and find the food consistent.

Been here several times and have tried different food on their menu which is small, but varied. I've liked the consistency of the quality of the food and I think the prices are in line with the quality. The quantity of food you get is not huge/steakhouse portions, but it's not like you have to buy the starch and vegetable as sides, either. The wine list has some pretty funky and affordable choices on it. They change the wines periodically, too, so you aren't stuck with a boilerplate house wine list. The biggest drawback of 9 Elm is it's atmosphere. It's like the moon--it has none. It's kind of loud and small with no waiting room and you don't have much chance of getting in by just showing up on the weekend. But for me/us, it's worth the effort because the food is consistent and we always feel we get a good meal for the money.

I have been wanting to go to 9elm for some time. This is a gem. Food outstanding. The value for a foodie will impress. Cocktails perfect. Exceeded all expectations. Wow downtown Danvers.
