Takara is still the best sushi I have ever had. They are so creative with their maki rolls and everything is always super FRESH. Try the Bruins maki, used to be a special but they finally added it to the menu. Max maki is also one of my favorites and the tuna tartare is very tasty. Hit up the liquor store down the street, it's BYOB!!

This place is delicious. I used to LOVE another place (Mai place) but after eating here I wont go back to the other place. They have great food and excellent sushi. The food is served fast and hot! Service is great! I went there the other day and tried sushi I had never had before and it was all delicious!

Huge fan of this place. All the fresh fish maki rolls are good, especially the spicy choices. BYOB so you can save a bit there. Seating is decent but it fills up on the weekends. Servers are very nice and attentive. Haven't had a bad meal there yet. Quick note that in 2012, Takara is not BYOB anymore so don't bring any booze in. Booooo!

Really good, fresh food. Good sushi, nice seaweed salad. It's no longer BYOB, which is too bad--it was very nice to bring your own. Nice to have it in the neighborhood. Nice waitstaff. Pleasant atmosphere.

i think this is my new fave place!! 1. one of a few BYOB spots! woooooooooooooooot :) 2. cute decor & nice service! 3. the sushi was very good and reasonably priced Went to Takara last night with 6 people and every1 was happy with their food! i had the spicy tuna tartar, tuna heaven and american dream i was very happy with the 1st two selections! i didnt really like the american dream...it sounds amazing on the menu but it had very strong taste that i didnt like..not quite sure how to explain it...tasted like alot of ginger and something else i didnt get to try it but I hear the celtics roll is amazing! gotta go back to see :)

For a novice sushi eater, I was impressed with Takara. The menu is a little overwhelming for someone who hasn't ventured away from California rolls, but that is going to be the case everywhere. The food was very fresh and the service was quick. Takara is BYOB and they will supply glasses, bottle openers, corkscrews and everything else you will need. It took me a few years to wander into to Takara, but I will definately go back.

Takara is hands-down amazing. My sister and I come here almost weekly (when we have the dough ;) The maki specials are dee-licious. We rarely stray from a certain few (Rock & Roll, Idol, Haley Maki, Ichiban Maki) because we love them so much. It's BYOB - so fun! Best miso soup I've had to date. The waitresses are adorable, the sushi chefs are awesome. The decor is impeccable and (kind of oddly) changes kind of often! But it's always pretty and clean. One of my favorite places on earth...a real gem in the suburbs!

Good sushi. Not the best in the world, but in the middle of Canton, and at the right price, you can't complain. Definitely a place to go to on a whim, not a place to make special plans to go to.

This is one of our favorite Japanese restaurants in the area. Oh and they also serve some great sushi. We've been coming here since they were a dinky hole-in-the-wall a few doors down. Everything is very fresh and the service is fantastic. I don't have any specific types of sushi to recommend, since sushi is so personal, but I can say that I have tried almost everything over the years and it's always been great. Even the mackerel, which I normally don't care for wasn't as fishy as what I've had at other places. And if you're not too into sushi, then there are all the other Japanese and Korean choices. On the Korean side, I often crave the Okdol Bi Bim Bap...Rice with meat and veggies served in a hot stone bowl with a fried egg on top. It's great comfort food. It is BYOB so, the options are limitless. The nearby liquor stores have smartened up over the years and provide some great choices now, knowing the business they get from Takara. In addition to the sake choices, you can also pickup some beer like Sapporo or Asahi. But you know what? I sometimes pick up a bottle of white wine. I recommend a Viognier with the sushi. Try it some time, you won't be disappointed.

I have gone two more times since the first review and found the service very attentive, so that is no longer an issue. They have VASTLY increased the maki roll menu! There are some very unique, very creative combinations and creations on there, now. Pretty impressive array of fish, too, much more than the standard salmon, tuna, shrimp and eel. We had a great deal of sushi for four people, plus two appetizers, no drinks for a little over $60. Really reasonable, great quality, and very filling.

Good sushi...but not the best on the south shore in my book. BYOB, which is priceless considering the cost of sushi + a healthy appetite. Service is good, expect a very decent sushi dinner. If they renovated the dining room, I'd add another star. Despite my criticisms....I am grateful this restaurant exists!!! I will definitely be returning soon.

Takara is down right awful. The food is overpriced, the waitstaff is rude and all they care about is if you spend a lot of money. I went to Takara with my girlfriend and we ordered some sushi and brought our own beer (Takara is BYOB). From the moment we stepped into the restaurant we were disrespected. My sister recently visited Takara and she is a huge sushi fan and she had the same exact experience that I had. If they treat their customers like crap then they won't be around much longer. I hope they leave because every time I drive past Takara I cringe.

Four stars, because they stayed open late on a rainy, dead Sunday night to feed three hungry travelers. The sushi was fresh and tasty, as were the various rolls. Gyobi was some of the best I've had in awhile. The galbi, not so much . . . it was OK, but kind of chewy and bland. Inside is small, quiet and clean.

Marikym T.
The atmosphere is upbeat and the sushi fresh! Even for those that may be anti-sushi (i.e. my food-fussy fiance), there is something on the menu sure to delight (think along the lines of chicken katsu: japanese-styled fried chicken strips over rice... he loved it!) The service is fast and because there is no liquor license, you can BYOB or whatever libation suits your pleasure! It is a fun place and beware that it gets jam packed on a friday night!

First off, let me say that I do not eat fish or sushi. One would wonder why I would find myself eating here, but I must say I love Japanese noodle dishes! I have truly enjoyed the noodle dishes that I have gotten at Takara. I have had the gyoza and tempura too, both very good. It can be quite crowded on the weekend nights, and the restaurant is small. One time I was there, and the waitress had a hard time understanding my date's request that a certain vegetable be omitted from his dish, I don't think her English was particularly good. However I have never had any other problems with the service, it was very attentive. So, if you have a friend that says, "don't drag me to another sushi restaurant!" you can assure them that there are plenty of great dishes at Takara that will satisfy them.

This place is great. The best thing is you can bring your own beer and wine for dinner! Outstanding right?

Takara can't be beat. The fish is very fresh, the service great and the prices are very reasonable. There aren't alot of sushi places that my wife, daughter and I can feel full and only spend $50-$60. The non-sushi fare is very good as well and they have a pretty broad menu which makes it a great place if you have some anti-sushi members of your party. It's a BYOB place but there's a liquor store diagonally across the street (next to Bank of Canton) that sells sushi friendly beverages so not to fear of you arrive and realize they don't serve alcohol. You're just a quick walk and a brown bag away away from Asahi, Sapporo or Plum Wine. If you like spicy I recommend the Hokkaiyaki appetizer. Cooked squid or scallop with tobiko in a spicy mayo kind of sauce. Hot, spicy and oh so delicious. Make sure you check out the specials board, you never know when they've come up with something new. Of course the fact that I can walk to it has probably jaded my opinion. We've been going to Takara since it was just Jackie and Jerry behind a tiny little counter in a place the size of my kitchen. From the first time we ate there we knew it'd be a hit and were praying it'd catch on so they'd stick around. When they moved two doors down and more than quadrupled the size of the place I was elated. I hope they never leave! Oh and if you have trouble finding street parking in Canton center (not likely but possible on rare occasion) just park in the Walgreen's lot across from the restaurant. Yeah there are signs that say "Walgreen's only" but the street side of the lot is empty most of the time and I don't know anyone who ever got a ticket or towed there.

Honestly, I've had sushi at other restaurants and I usually end up comparing it to Takara. Takara was probably my first really positive experience with sushi. Not only is Takara affordable when you compare them with other restaurants, but the food is very good. I think that the individual sushi pieces can be small, but the overall portion sizes are good and affordable, so that more than makes up for it. The staff is always nice and friendly and depite the restaurant being small and the tables being close together, it's a really comfortable atmosphere. The only drawback is that you'll have to find street parking as the Walgreens across the street is now towing from their lot.

We went back to Takara recently and were disappointed. The menu has changed and service seems rushed. The makis we had were fresh, but overall the look and feel is not as good as before. They were not tightly rolled, I would say they are a bit sloppy. Too bad...this was such a good place before. I think they are getting too popular for their own good.

Takara has great food and a terrific staff - I've never walked in without being greeted and seated immediately. It's not the fanciest place, which is fine; it's nice and comfortable, in a friendly sort of way, and not too expensive. They're open at all the right hours, including Christmas Day. I have lots of fond memories of eating there with friends and loved ones. There are two liquor stores a few steps away, so pick up a bottle of something to go with dinner first. When I moved recently, one of the deciding factors on the building I chose was that it's literally a 2 minute walk from Takara!

Nice selection of tasty vegetarian sushi. Love the sweet potato tempura maki! Also have veggie udon, veggie hibachi, and tofu/veg teriyaki if you're not in the mood for sushi.

I love Takara! Fresh sushi and great rolls. I crave this place every time I come home to visit. Even though it's small, it's BYOB. Or you can easily pick up delivery, still tastes just as yummy!

I love this place. The sushi has always made my belly extra happy, and the fried green tea ice cream is such a wonderful dessert you will be thinking about going back just for the ice cream for days, weeks, months, to come. The non-sushi dishes are excellent as well. Presentation is never an afterthought when it comes to any of the dishes. The greatest part is that it is great quality sushi that you can get without heading in town, which is a huge plus since I only live a 10 minute drive from here, but 30-45 minutes from any decent sushi place in town.

This review is extremely tardy given how often we have frequented Takara since moving to the area three years ago. If you live anywhere near Canton and you like sushi, you are doing yourself a disservice if you haven't tried Takara. Every time we go, we know we are getting fresh, spectacular sushi. Additionally, the Ok Dol Bimibab is fantastic if you're in the mood for Korean. Even better...it's BYOB! This is our standby restaurant whenever we don't know where to go. We cannot recommend Takara more strongly.

I really love Takara! They have a great variety of sushi rolls, and often have different specials as well. The service is always excellent. I love that it's BYOB- there is a liquor store right across the street.

Update on October 20, 2007: I've been to Takara on many occasions. Almost 2-3x a month and I've been noticing a slight decrease in sashimi portions every time. Of course, I'm thinking it must be my appetite but I'm sorry to report the days of large fish is over. The sashimi portions have decreased by almost 40% while their prices have increased by 20%. Not a great deal if you frequent Takara's. I've switched to Mai Place where their sashimi is much bigger with a great selection of rolls and other creative sashimi delights. ----------------------- Original review: Looks like I'm on a roll with the Asian delights in the burbs. I was on a mission to find a closer Japanese specific restaurant with good udon and sushi. I was able to find 1 out of 2 with Takara in Canton Center. Takara has been in Canton Center for the past 3 years. I just happen to find it the other day. It's much closer than Mai Place and will serve the purpose of a quick sushi fix. Takara is a mixture of Japanese and Korean serving doksul bi bim bab (hot stone pot) to udon. Their sushi is well prepared with nice slices of sushi. The staff is attentive and in fact I think a couple of them used to work in the city at Ginza or some of the other sushi joints. I was not too fond of their udon as the broth was too dark. Immediately I thought the broth would be salty but was pleasantly surprised that it was subtle in taste. But still served the purpose of providing a nice suburban retreat for Japanese. The doksul bi bim bab was not the best I've had compared to Koreana or the other restaurant (name escapes me) on Beacon St in Brookline. I like the sushi and have to go back for some of the other items on the menu. Another BONUS...BYOB! They do not have a liquor license so the alcohol is inexpensive. Just go to the liquor store across the street and help yourself to a nice sauvignon blanc or viognier with sushi. In the end, I am happy that I came across Takara. They might not be the BEST game compared to Boston, but very pleased when factoring drive time, convenience and overall selection. Thus the reason for 4 stars. I would give 3 stars at most if Takara was located in Boston. So I guess the old adage, "location location location" really plays a factor in the rating.

In times like these a great byob option is just the thing we need. Top it off with great sushi and great service and Takara gets 2 thumbs up. It's a pretty small place but it was quite charming. I got the sushi party option for 2 with my sushi partner in crime. It was filling and delicious and right on target with its price. We were never rushed, which was a great thing because we are slow eaters. I definitely recommend coming here with a nice bottle of wine in hand.

This is the best sushi I've had in all of Massachusetts. Arguably in the top 3 from here to California. I could eat at Takaras for a month straight without being sick of it. If you are a sushi snob, this is your place.

The okdoi bi bim bap is my favorite! You choose between chicken, tofu, steak, or pork and it comes in a hot stone bowl with rice, veggies, and hot sauce on the side. They also make really strong and creative drinks. I love that there's a great Japanese-Korean restaurant locally.

Not expecting much based on its outside appearance, this restaurant really surprised me with an extensive and exotic drink menu (lychee martini I had was excellent) as well as pretty decent sushi rolls. They could improve the atmosphere in here a bit, however. It's a bit basic and the service was a scattered, but overall, pretty good place. In the future, I think I will get take-out instead of dining in.

Not good. The food was inedible. We ordered the Seafood Hibachi, which was bland and completely overcooked, and the Hwe Dup Bab, which was horrible. My wife, who is Korean, couldn't eat the Dup Bab at all. The staff was nice and tried to replace it, which was appreciated, but we declined. Since both dishes were poor, we didn't want to try our luck again. We will not be back. They should review their menu and only include dishes they know how to prepare well. Korean, Japanese and Sushi dishes all require different expertise... don't offer them if you don't know how to cook them.

Can't believe people give this restaurant good reviews. it was the worst food experience ever. old and cheap ingredients and over charged for what we get.

One of our friends introduced us to this restaurant a couple of weeks ago and we went again last Saturday and it has been great both times. The restaurant itself was warm and cozy and I felt comfortable to be in as some places can be loud, bright, and overwhelming so this was a plus. The first time I ordered the beef okdol bibimbap which was delicious and fresh and on Saturday, I ordered the tofu bibimbap (chilled version) and liked it as well. The portions on the dishes I ordered were huge and they give you a lot of veggies (some places don't give you a lot) so you're kind of getting what you paid for. What I like most about it was that it came with miso soup and it fitted perfectly since both days we went it was freezing out. We also ordered the tuna pizza for appetizer and it was good as well. The only thing I found weird was that they used either a wonton or nacho chip as the "crust" with the spicy tuna on top. It was still good, but totally random. Last, the servers were pretty good and attentive. They were quick to take our orders, bring them out, refill the waters as needed, and give us the checks. What more can you ask for? Next time I'm probably going to try the sushi rolls because each time I see a sushi dish goes by for other tables, it looks delicious, however I'm already sold on their bibimbap so I might stick with that.

Very average except for the dragon ball (yum!) Also note that their spicy tuna and spicy salmon does not have the mayo and fish mixed like most places. And it's not crunchy. Maybe the stellar reviews are bc the sushi around isn't so great either...!

Cozy lil sushi spot that offers super tasty and unique fresh rolls. We ordered a bunch of specialty rolls and were very happy with all of them! The server was friendly and attentive. Centrally located near a cute ice cream parlor to satisfy your sweet tooth cravings ;-)

Ok so I am now a Sushi connoisseur. I have got more and more adventurous and will I still have my staples I can say I have explored many of the dishes on this menu and I have visited many other sushi restaurants and I can with a great deal of confidence now say that there is no better place in terms of consistent quality at a great price. Takara has become my official business lunch restaurant and my weekly lunch treat. At great Sushi lunch for under $15, how can you go wrong?

We had steamed gyozas , shrimp and vegetable tempura, sushi, and stir fried soba. It was all very well done. I couldn't help but look at everyone else's orders as they all looked one more interesting than the next.

We were on a hunt for some Japanese food after a trip to IKEA, sadly this place did not satisfy our cravings. We got various Korean dishes, and the mother-in-law could barely finish any of the dishes, the kalbi in particular was very tough and also nothing like authentic kalbi. We got a few other "Japanese" appetizers, they were decent, but definitely could tell it was not prepared by a Japanese chef. The service was decent though, I don't like giving 2 stars, but this place is exactly that "meh, I've experienced better."

Overall, solid sushi place in DTOWN Norwood. Since we had a large party of 13, we ordered TONS of sushi and I got to try so many different things. We ordered the largest sushi boat which came with 70 pieces of sushi. Proudly and ravenously, we devoured it all within 10 minutes. It was epic. We also ordered lots of tuna rolls, 7 daughter rolls, and some of their other specialty rolls. I didn't like how the sushi on the boat was very tiny in comparison to when we would order the rolls separately by themselves. The rolls themselves were made with much more effort although I thought some of their specialty rolls had too much sauce. The service here was quick though, and they were able to get us everything they we needed when we asked for it.

My favorite sushi restaurant ever. Great service - the manager will often come over to make sure we are satisfied. Huge selection of sushi rolls (be sure to look at the specials menu). The maki rolls are amazing! Some favorite appetizers: tuna heaven, tuna pizza, tuna avacado salad Some favorite maki rolls: hawaii, bruins, bombay, 7 sisters, hako, becka Bi bim bab is great as well!

Unfortunately, this place is still just "so-so". We tried it a few years ago and just came back this week to see whether it has gotten any better. Nope, it hasn't :( The sushi selection is creative, but execution falls short.

I like takara. it's tiny and crammed, but you can bring your own booze and the sushi is delicious. the shu mai is yummy! everything is really cheap also. most maki rolls are like $6-$10. that's a steal! parking sucks because takara is at the top of a really awkward intersection, so you're better off parking at walgreens and walking over.

Favorite sushi restaurant-always fresh and absolutely delicious! THE BEST! My daughters haven't found a match in NYC yet. The first stop home is Takara! Our favorites are: tuna poppers, the wayland, the Takara roll, the house naruta roll! Not into fish-try the ok dol bim bam! Beef, chicken, tofu, rice and veggies in a hot stone bowl!

Pleasant atmosphere, run by a nice family, great sushi, and great sake martinis- need I say more? Love to visit w the kids (they love the food and the mini-koi fountain), or with a grown up for a lunch date. Their takeout is great too. Always considerate and helpful, they take care of our umbrellas when it's raining. Highly recommend.

We live in Canton and this place is a frequent takeout joint for us. It was the only sushi place around for awhile (now, there is Gourmet Garden in Cobbs Corner). The sushi is not bad but not great. I enjoy the spicy pork bulgogi. Their kalbi is terrible. It is a satisfactory takeout place when we're in the mood for some sushi.
(3)

Family friendly and consistently good. We've been to Takara more times than we've checked in, and the restaurant is always served a solid meal. We like bringing the kids here, because they so like the sushi and the sushi costs are lower here than other places in the region. I like all the soups here and my wife likes the "Okdol Bi Bim Bab," which is a meal in a hot stone bowl. Personally, the Crazy Calamari sushi is my favorite for taste, many others are just ok.

Love this place! Best sushi in Canton/Stoughton/Newton/Sharon area. Haven't been here in a few months, it looks like from others' reviews it's not BYOB now? Oh well. (You used to be able to roll up with your own wine - score!) They have an extensive menu, I recommend going with the specials, always. In my experience whatever's the special that day is always much fancier than what's on the menu. We mostly always go with rolls, but they do have good sashimi, hibachi and hand rolls. Also, their house specials are some Korean dishes, Bi Bim Bab for instance. The service is fast and very friendly and the restaurant actually has a very Japanese feel to it, I love eating here, even though alot of times we just get it to go.

As a serious sushi snob it is pretty rare for me to have zero complaints about a restaurant but I guess there is always a first. I've been going to this place since I was in high school and any time I'm home visiting family I make sure to treat my dad to fresh sushi. The sushi basically tastes and smells like it was caught fresh that day and for those that don't like sushi there are a lot of authentic asian dishes to keep any picky eater happy(try the katsudon it's delicious!). Combine all that with an attentive, friendly wait staff and prices that confuse you solely because of how low they are(SURPRISE!) and Takara is a true winner. If they ever get their liquor license they will be a full fledged 5 but BYOB isn't too bad. If you love melt in your mouth sushi make sure to check out Takara instead of making the trek into Boston for the expensive alternative.
(5)
Diana S.
Amazing sushi at a great price point. Probably some of the best sushi I've had outside of my favorite place in NYC (Poke on the UES). Sushi is fresh, special rolls are creative and not too "greasey" (i.e. not covered in spicy mayonnaise so you can't taste anything but). Drinks are delicious, and staff is friendly. I can't find a fault with this place other than the fact that it's so popular that sometimes there's a wait. Someone earlier said this is the Best sushi in Canton/Stoughton/Newton/Sharon, well lets add Foxboro and Mansfield to the list!
(5)
Kimmy B.
Their sushi is ok but the other stuffs that are prepared in the kitchen are not authentic Japanese by all means - sadly it is getting harder and harder to find the real authentic Japanese cuisine around here. Most of the Japanese restaurants in Boston area are Chinese or Korean influenced. Anyway, I ordered a tempura udon which is a signature Japanese noodle soup, but as you would see in the picture attached, they put broccoli and carrots in the soup instead of fish cakes and seaweed. And the broth did not taste like Dashi (Japanese fish base broth) at all. It tasted more like Chinese hot pot broth. And also the tempura sauce wasn't really tempura sauce- it was more like the ginger sauce for dumplings. I am not saying it did not taste good. But for a person who was expecting a traditional Japanese udon dish, it was a big disappointment. If you can't make an udon like an udon, you shouldn't call it an udon! It's like calling a quesadilla a pizza. The reason I gave them three stars is because their service was excellent - both sushi chefs and wait staffs were very attentive and friendly.

Mmm Big yummy rolls of sushi. Red bean mochi ice cream was delicious. Nice staff. Interior is nice. Sake? Yes, yes... In other words I enjoyed this place, the sushi was awesome, and their menu featured a lot of things that I'll surely be back to try. First place I've been to that had mochi in red bean flavor, and it was gooood. Overall a great little place, good luck finding parking though.

Upon walking into Takara my wife and I were impressed with its clean and nicely decorated atmosphere. We were helped by 2 servers - one was very friendly and outgoing, the other was nice, but quiet, serious, and to the point. We were amazed at how quickly our food came out and by the end of our meal, we felt a little rushed (although the restaurant was not crowded). We shared one of the sushi specials to start - a spicy salmon type of roll, which was delicious! My wife had some sushi rolls for dinner (Alaskan and Salmon), which were fresh and tasty. I had the Beef teriyaki, which was served sizzling hot and tender, but it was just OK. Overall, this is a very nice restaurant out in the suburbs and we did enjoy it, but it did not "wow" us.

We ordered take-out tonight. The sushi was okay. Nothing to brag about. Again, red snapper was included on the chirashi entree. It was sliced thin but difficult to eat. It was a chewy. Prices were on the high side. Halfway through the meal, I was completely GROSSED OUT when I found a piece of hair in the rice.

In Canton, MA for the night. Yelp'd and found this place about 5 miles from my hotel in sleepy Canton. Good menu with lots of "speciality rolls", but that's not what I usually get. I got the Sushi Deluxe dinner which comes with Miso soup. This had 11 pieces of assorted sushi with a California Roll. The sushi included 2 pieces each of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, red snapper, and some other white fish, as well as a piece of shrimp sushi. I also had a large Sapporo (22 oz.) but they only had these in cans, not bottles, but it was very cold and delicious. Everything was quite good and the service was top-notch. Good place!

First thing first-- i am NOT a sushi lover. Hate all types of seafood. To me, what makes a Japanese restaurant good is their selection of other, non-seafood items. That being said-- Takara has something for everyone! When comparing it to some of the other Japanese restaurants in the area, Takara is waaay smaller. But its the perfect place for take out! We got take out there last night-- their Sweet Potato Tempura rolls are AMAZING. Perfect mix of crispy and soft. I think they are reasonably priced...although everything adds up fast!

Very quick service, very fresh food, gigantic Udon portions. Great presentation, good portions, slightly expensive sushi. Love the Okdol Bibimbab. The pork Gyoza appetizer came quickly and was cripy, hot, and very flavorful. Tempura squid was just OK - it needed a couple minutes more to cook. Miso soup just perfect without being too bland, nor too salty. Nice atmosphere and almost always run into folks we know there. Definitely my go to place for local sushi.

Takara is an adorable, moderately sized sushi and other cuisine establishment situated in the heart of Canton. When I was out for work and had a hankering for some soosh, I found this online and when I saw the 'People on Yelp Love Us' sticker on the door, I believed I had found a diamond in the rough! The staff were ultra friendly, service prompt, and menu was fantastic. Anyone who offers white tuna gets to keep a little piece of my heart. Although I was the first one there for lunch, the space quickly filled with families and friends meeting for lunch. Clearly Takara is much loved in the neighborhood. I enjoyed my insideout maki, but thought the salmon could have been a little more fresh. The white tuna sashimi rocked my taste buds, but maybe it could have used a little more thawing time. The gyoza soup was a little too salty, but I can't complain much about dumplings in soup. All in all, it was a decent soosh hot spot and when I'm in Canton again, chances I'll go back are good. Oh ya, and you Cantonese (I mean Cantonites?) peeps have a great BYOB joint!

Sushi is great! Will definitely be back

For the second time in 2 weeks I had a family member get sick eating the tuna suschi. We have had enough for a while!

I've been to Japan and had sushi there ... this place beats anything I had in Japan, hands down. The food is fresh and delicious, the service efficient and kind. The food not only tastes amazing, but looks beautiful as well. Maybe I'm a weirdo, but I sometimes take pictures of the plate because it is presented so artistically. If you like sushi, you'd be a fool to not give this place a try.

I first discovered Takara when I worked in Canton and later rediscovered it when I lived in Canton. Takara is great, I mean, really great. Especially for the 'burbs. Prices here are pretty reasonable and service is a little slow but not languid and always friendly. Plus, there's a packy across the street and then are BYOB. If you bring your own sake, they'll heat it for you and serve it properly but not charge you any extra for the service. Which leads me back to my original statement. Takara is great.

This is by far the best Sushi in the area. I eat sushi at least once a week and Takara is always a solid choice. Five stars for sure, and I don't give those easily.

I saw a couple bad comments for this place and I have NO idea why... Bad service?? I have NEVER received bad service here. Everyone is very nice and courteous. I've always been OK with the portions and have done take out there many a times and the food is just as tastey. I highly recommend the Derek's Maki! Also it's BYOB how great is that!!

I enjoy their vegetarian sushi/maki options and I love the avocado salad. The dressing is delicious and the ingredients are fresh. I have only had good meals here!

I love Takara for Sushi. Their other dishes are pretty good as well, but I never have a bad sushi - maki. They are resonable priced. Now they do have beer/wine license. I have tried other sushi places around the area and I always feel Takara is better.

One of the top five Sushi places I've been to in terms of food quality. Don't let the generic asian restaurant decor fool you. The money was spent on quality ingredients, not the decorating. As it should be. The staff is always friendly and the prices are reasonable.

While looking for some Korean food and not finding any we came here and tried the Okdol Bi Bim Bab seafood. it comes with rice, vegetables, shrimp, scallops and squid. It was pretty enjoyable, there wasn't that much rice though. The food was very good and had good portions. the server was not very attentive we had to ask couple of times before we got refills for our water. i will defiantly come back and try their sushi; looking at the other tables it seemed very appetizing.

The miso soup was very good. Often this indicates a good restaurant. The sushi rolls we had were just okay. Maybe we are spoiled with good sushi restaurants in NYC.

Sushi is fantastic here! BYOB - which is great!

At first I was thinking it was going to be yet another overpriced sushi place, but the rolls are large and the sashimi plates have some of the biggest pieces of fish that I've seen since I moved to MA. I definitely will be back. It's not cheap, but it's worth the price.

Despite having a bad experience the first time here, I came here again with the intention of ordering the right food. When I first came here, I ordered the Sushi Deluxe which is chef's choice. I was crestfallen when I saw my plate filled with sashmi. ($20 for this crap!?, I thought to myself). Words to the wise, don't order chef's choice because they will take the easy route and ball up a log of rice with raw fish on top. The second time I came here, I ordered the Hot and Sour soup and the Hawaii Maki roll. The soup was amazing and very unlike a Chinese Hot and Sour soup. It was light, brothy with green scallions, shrimp, and mushrooms. The Hawaii Maki roll came with 8 delicious pieces topped with avocado. My DP and I split the shumai - which he enjoyed but I've tasted a lot better so if you can, avoid the shumai. My DP got the chicken roll and Japanese spring roll which I didn't try but if you like fried rolls of meat and vegetables, go for it. I knew about the BYOB but didn't know if that extended to hard liquor. The first time I went, I bought a small handle of vodka which I was trying to hide because I wasn't sure if we would get in trouble. So last night, I remembered to bring a nice bottle of Pinot Noir for dinner and no questions asked!

Love this place. Bibimbap is really hearty hot and delicious. I try all different kind of rolls and each is amazing. I truly like the Christmas Maki. Seaweed salad is real good too. Hot green tea is real. Nice servers.

Why I won't go back: Unfortunately, no sushi is better than poor quality sushi Do NOT order: Unagi Tony's tip: Don't do takeout, b/c if you're disappointed, at least you can ask for a replacement item or a refund. As someone who works in the city, but lives in the burbs, I have been desperate for a convenient place I could pick up some fresh, creative sushi as a meal on my way home. Given Takara's reputation on Yelp, I was hopeful I had discovered such a place. But after two poor experiences, I'm still looking. I'll caveat my review by saying that I ordered takeout both times. I was early for my pick up. But, yes, I did have a 10 minute drive home. So, I acknowledge that the perceived freshness and the dining experience differs from eating in the restaurant itself. That said, I have done takeout before, and I just don't think that 10 minutes, or my kitchen table, accounts for the gap in quality. My litmus test for sushi places is always either the tuna or salmon sushi (not sashimi) and the unagi. My first clue that the sushi was not as fresh as the top places in Boston was the modest (vs. deep) red/orange coloring of the tuna/salmon. And both took an effort to chew, whereas I expect them to almost melt in my mouth. Same with the unagi - the coloring was a bit too pale and the flavor was not as rich as it has been in my favorite haunts (Douzo, Haru). And none of these pieces held their shape after a quick dip in soy sauce and a bite - something which I have come to expect. No need to beat them up any further on the rolls - they simply did not have the look and taste of something that had JUST been prepared. Even the aroma of what I have ordered was somewhat off-putting. The bottom line for me is that once you've had great sushi, you can't eat anything less. This isn't even close in my book. I'm going to trial some other local places and hope to come back to Yelp with a decent alternative to Takara.

Love this place. It's BYOB so it's even better! What's also nice personally is that it is a mile from my house. Very convienent to pick up or dine in. Friendly service and the food is consistent. They have some Korean dishes which is nice since I'm Korean. It's not 100% authentic but it does the deed when I'm craving Korean food. It's our "go to" sushi spot. Of course if we were in the city Douzo is our favorite.

One of the best sushi places in the area. Their products are always very fresh and taste amazing! Try the kamikazi maki. Their takeout is always ready very quickly

Great sushi place. It's got awesome sushi rolls and the service is great. I usually get eel and cucumber rolls which are awesome, as an appetizer I get miso soup, which is also good. Another good appetizer is the tuna pizza which I just had. good stuff, and the sizes of the sets are huge.

Quite impressed with high ratings from previous reviewers. I invited my friends for dinners here. I was so disappointed with their sushi and soup. I ordered sushi party ($51), special Takara Maki, Tempura Maki. They all tasteless. Misho soup is awful - it is just like plain water.

LOVE this place. Really killer sushi. Not too pricey either. Try the Ashley, the Gelb, the Volcano, the Dustin and the Derek.

(5)Alexandra L.
This place is delicious. I used to LOVE another place (Mai place) but after eating here I wont go back to the other place. They have great food and excellent sushi. The food is served fast and hot! Service is great! I went there the other day and tried sushi I had never had before and it was all delicious!
(4)Steve D.
Booooo!
(4)Karen N.
Really good, fresh food. Good sushi, nice seaweed salad. It's no longer BYOB, which is too bad--it was very nice to bring your own. Nice to have it in the neighborhood. Nice waitstaff. Pleasant atmosphere.
(4)Diana B.
i think this is my new fave place!! 1. one of a few BYOB spots! woooooooooooooooot :) 2. cute decor & nice service! 3. the sushi was very good and reasonably priced Went to Takara last night with 6 people and every1 was happy with their food! i had the spicy tuna tartar, tuna heaven and american dream i was very happy with the 1st two selections! i didnt really like the american dream...it sounds amazing on the menu but it had very strong taste that i didnt like..not quite sure how to explain it...tasted like alot of ginger and something else i didnt get to try it but I hear the celtics roll is amazing! gotta go back to see :)
(5)Meghan G.
(4)Lady M.
(5)Rick P.
Good sushi. Not the best in the world, but in the middle of Canton, and at the right price, you can't complain. Definitely a place to go to on a whim, not a place to make special plans to go to.
(4)Pete C.
(4)Stephen D.
(4)Jess L.
(3)Jimmy K.
(1)Jason B.
(4)Marikym T.
(5)Dawn A.
(4)Manuel G.
This place is great. The best thing is you can bring your own beer and wine for dinner! Outstanding right?
(4)Rob T.
(5)Erin G.
(4)J P.
(3)Meghan J.
(4)Alison B.
Nice selection of tasty vegetarian sushi. Love the sweet potato tempura maki! Also have veggie udon, veggie hibachi, and tofu/veg teriyaki if you're not in the mood for sushi.
(4)Stacy C.
I love Takara! Fresh sushi and great rolls. I crave this place every time I come home to visit. Even though it's small, it's BYOB. Or you can easily pick up delivery, still tastes just as yummy!
(5)Jake F.
(5)Joshua F.
(5)Marcie O.
I really love Takara! They have a great variety of sushi rolls, and often have different specials as well. The service is always excellent. I love that it's BYOB- there is a liquor store right across the street.
(5)Michael M.
Excellent sushi. Some very creative rolls that were fresh and delicious.
(4)Joey S.
Great service, great sushi, cool and friendly staff. I do takeout here all the time!
(5)JAZON L.
(4)Doan Q.
(4)Matthew A.
I personally love Takara. The food here is delicious. Cheers to Yelper Meghan R for pointing out this fine BYOB restaurant. See my Yelp list for other fine (and not so fine) BYOB establishments all over New England.
(5)Tanya G.
This is the best sushi I've had in all of Massachusetts. Arguably in the top 3 from here to California. I could eat at Takaras for a month straight without being sick of it. If you are a sushi snob, this is your place.
(5)Christopher R.
I no longer live in the area, but this is still one of my favorite sushi places!
(4)Brenna O.
(5)Jaecj W.
Very fresh. Very good. Will not disappoint. Low key good food. The binawhatever bowl is awesome as is sushi
(4)Sarah A.
(4)Mike L.
(1)Husuk J.
Can't believe people give this restaurant good reviews. it was the worst food experience ever. old and cheap ingredients and over charged for what we get.
(1)Jillian W.
(5)L S.
Very average except for the dragon ball (yum!) Also note that their spicy tuna and spicy salmon does not have the mayo and fish mixed like most places. And it's not crunchy. Maybe the stellar reviews are bc the sushi around isn't so great either...!
(3)Helen J.
Cozy lil sushi spot that offers super tasty and unique fresh rolls. We ordered a bunch of specialty rolls and were very happy with all of them! The server was friendly and attentive. Centrally located near a cute ice cream parlor to satisfy your sweet tooth cravings ;-)
(5)Toby H.
(5)Geoff P.
Love the Bim Bim Bap
(4)Rob P.
We had steamed gyozas , shrimp and vegetable tempura, sushi, and stir fried soba. It was all very well done. I couldn't help but look at everyone else's orders as they all looked one more interesting than the next.
(4)Jennifer T.
(2)Derek H.
(3)Becca A.
(5)Annat S.
Unfortunately, this place is still just "so-so". We tried it a few years ago and just came back this week to see whether it has gotten any better. Nope, it hasn't :( The sushi selection is creative, but execution falls short.
(2)Yasa E.

Great sushi! Great service. Will go back again.

Very good sushi! And they are super fast which is a plus because Im usually popping in on a break and dont have a lot of time. They have some great veg/vegan options even in the sushi.

FYI: Takara still serves fantastic sushi, but it is no longer BYOB since they acquired their liquor license.

(4)Evan E.
This is by far the best Sushi in the area. I eat sushi at least once a week and Takara is always a solid choice. Five stars for sure, and I don't give those easily.
(5)Michelle B.
(5)Catherine N.
I enjoy their vegetarian sushi/maki options and I love the avocado salad. The dressing is delicious and the ingredients are fresh. I have only had good meals here!
(5)Rob S.
I love Takara for Sushi. Their other dishes are pretty good as well, but I never have a bad sushi - maki. They are resonable priced. Now they do have beer/wine license. I have tried other sushi places around the area and I always feel Takara is better.
(5)Rick H.
One of the top five Sushi places I've been to in terms of food quality. Don't let the generic asian restaurant decor fool you. The money was spent on quality ingredients, not the decorating. As it should be. The staff is always friendly and the prices are reasonable.
(4)Steven N.
(4)Mike S.
The miso soup was very good. Often this indicates a good restaurant. The sushi rolls we had were just okay. Maybe we are spoiled with good sushi restaurants in NYC.
(3)Lauren M.
Sushi is fantastic here! BYOB - which is great!
(5)Jaysen C.
At first I was thinking it was going to be yet another overpriced sushi place, but the rolls are large and the sashimi plates have some of the biggest pieces of fish that I've seen since I moved to MA. I definitely will be back. It's not cheap, but it's worth the price.
(4)Christina T.

(4)Roselle F.
One of the best sushi places in the area. Their products are always very fresh and taste amazing! Try the kamikazi maki. Their takeout is always ready very quickly
(5)Josh P.
Great sushi place. It's got awesome sushi rolls and the service is great. I usually get eel and cucumber rolls which are awesome, as an appetizer I get miso soup, which is also good. Another good appetizer is the tuna pizza which I just had. good stuff, and the sizes of the sets are huge.

absolutely delectable. best tofu i have ever had. ever.
(5)Paula N.
Quite impressed with high ratings from previous reviewers. I invited my friends for dinners here. I was so disappointed with their sushi and soup. I ordered sushi party ($51), special Takara Maki, Tempura Maki. They all tasteless. Misho soup is awful - it is just like plain water.
(2)Rebecca R.
LOVE this place. Really killer sushi. Not too pricey either. Try the Ashley, the Gelb, the Volcano, the Dustin and the Derek.
