Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Discovered this place while wandering through Cambridge / Harvard Sq. due to Yelp and a great discovery it was! What a cool vibe. It had a fast causal, "chipotle style" line to order food which smelled incredible and was a great price. Almost everything was 5 dollars. Went with tacos and got two tacos stuffed with a delicious spicy shredded chicken. So good. There were so many protein options it was hard to decide! Our table decided to split an order of chips and queso as well and there were no leftovers. It was quality food done well. This place was busy so it was clear the Harvard / MIT crowd were fans of the restaurant too. One unique aspect about the place is that the food line and bar line are separate meaning if you want a drink, you have to wait in line all over again. I wish it was more integrated because we were all wiped out from being touristy all day and didn't feel like waiting again for margs. However, they looked authentic and refreshing! One cool thing though was as it got past 8 pm you could tell people were coming for the Mexican beers and margs to just chill with some chips and guac before hitting up the clubs so it had a cool night life vibe as well. The price was right here and the food was tasty. I'd make a return visit if I was ever in the area again!

The Brattle Street location is very much an upgrade to their previous Mt. Auburn (?) location. It's much bigger and the design and interior has a classier vibe. The food is pretty good (if you don't expect authentic Mexican food), but all the burritos and nachos I've had here, I always thought their ingredients tasted fresh. Their sangria tastes more like they just mixed wine and some spritzer, rather than actually fermented juice. Their frozen margs are decent, but not worth $8 -- better margs around the corner at Border. Great rooftop bar when the weather is nice! But kind of annoying that you can only get food downstairs. Apparently you can order food at the rooftop bar, but the bartenders always tell me no... Tends to be loud inside.

Finally a burrito that tastes good in Boston. Conveniently located by Harvard Square Felipe's is great. I had their al-pastor super burrito that was amazing, I defenetly recomend it.

Probably the only place I willingly drink terrible margaritas (they really are tequila slushies). Two key tips: 1. There are actually two lines, starting at either end of the counter. 2. Get drinks (and food) downstairs and bring them to the roof, even though the roof has a bar. The rooftop is pretty nice and a welcome addition to Harvard Square. The food is surprisingly better than I remember old Felipe's! I got the vegetable tortilla bowl and was pleasantly impressed by it.

Sooo...this is confusing because I ordered a tortilla bowl but there was no tortilla.... It came with tortilla chips. Hmm... Okay. So, I got the salad and it came with some stuff but then every. single. thing. after the basic salad is extra. It ended up costing $9! I should have just gone to chipotle for all the same stuff. Lunch date got some kind of tacos and said they were fine but nothing to rave about. Didn't go upstairs. Staff is kind of rude.

Felipe's gets a 5 star for location and a 5 star for decor. It has a great upscale bar look with plenty of seating even when it is busy. But the food doesn't match it. It is conveniently located in Harvard Square so it will always be somewhat crowed with tourist no matter what the food taste like. It is fast food, similar to Chipotle, but not as good. I know Chipotle is not as fresh as they claim, but this was the opposite of fresh. The prices are half as much but the chicken tacos were very small and not much in them. They look good, but they were tasteless, and the sauces were mediocre. The line workers seemed confused. With so many Tex Mex in the area, I will not be back. It was so much better at the old location.

We have always loved Felipe's! We always went to their old location (had a hole-in-a-wall feel - we always love supporting local places with that atmosphere) and were so excited for Felipe's when they opened up their new & very much expanded location. We initially visited during the first couple of weeks of their grand opening and were able to chat with Don, one of the co-owners of the place. It's always great to hear how local establishments form and grow - they brought over the staff from the old location and materials were brought from Mexico for the decor of the new place - how neat! We visited again this past weekend and enjoyed a lovely evening on the rooftop. Boston definitely needs more rooftop places! We always get two burritos and a side of nachos with guac. (Note: you do have to go downstairs to order food, which is slightly inconvenient but think about how much more packed the rooftop will be if they allowed customers to order with the bartenders!??). We also got Pacific beer, a local Mexican beer. (Note: alcohol selection is limited to margaritas, beer, 1 white wine & 1 rose on the rooftop). The rooftop does get busy/crowded fast but hey, what rooftop bar in Boston doesn't on a beautiful summer evening? Food is good and affordable & the vibe is great - highly recommend!

The 3 star option was made for a place like Felipe's. It was good enough, but not memorable. Cute enoug, but not a place that you want to linger (it's also super loud and would not lend itself well to an early relationship date) and reasonably priced enough, but not such that you feel like it's a great value. As others have mentioned, it operates like Chipotle with the bummer that many condiments are extra. Typical items on the menu and good guac. Make sure you check out both lines (there is an additional line in the back) if you run into a crowd.

My Cambridge friends described Felipe's as the 3am spot for the crowd around Harvard Square. Felipe's is certainly an upgrade from my old late night haunt of IHOP. I ordered a burrito with spicy chicken, black beans, lettuce, green and red salsa, and rice. Plus a churro with dulce de leche, because everybody has time for that! The burrito was good, and I can't help echoing everyone else's sentiments that it's just like Chipotle. Except less good. One difference is that while everything except guac is included at Chipotle, lots of things cost EXTRA here, such as queso and corn (and about six other things that I can't recall). That's where they get ya. That said, prices are still very reasonable. Kudos to Felipe's for having a more authentic fee, but still decidedly a Tex-Mex one, that other similar Mexican-story casual dining places. The presence of flan and dulce de leche on the menu, whatever their quality, is a nice touch. There is also an upstairs bad that I hear is very nice, although we didn't go there because it was raining. Oh, and they have Jarritos, which is AWESOME and is also a sign of authenticity. Chipotle be gone. The veggies were pretty fresh, although the lettuce was that really hard kind that I find wholly undesirable. The churro was ok, although a little thick, only lukewarm, and the filling inside was a little strange. But all in all, the next time I'm in HS, I'll probably end up here again.

Prepare for a glowing review from an Anna's loyalist... Felipe's burrito is fantastic! Flavorful meats, fresh ingredients, stuffed perfectly into a tasty tortilla. The al pastor is a must get - rich and sweet, and less fatty than Anna's. The chips and guac are a great side too! The lunch rush line gets nuts right at 12pm but the burritos are worth the wait. Service is fast and friendly. Prices are comparable to Anna's. Great location right in Harvard Square (much better than their previous location near the Garage).

Rooftop season is my favorite season so I was happy to come here on a cool Saturday night. Up three flights of stairs you get to the nice outdoor rooftop which the doorman keeps at capacity quite carefully. Drinks are average at best but well enough priced, however, I was mostly upset about the fact that they couldn't make me a long island iced tea. [grumble] so I stuck with a carefully measured margarita. There was a brief moment where the barman over-decibled the music; at least when asked he was good enough to turn it back down. The food looked delicious however that has not been tested yet there will be another trip for this. Until then, the place left a bit to ask for.

This is all you really need to know: Carnitas Super Quesadilla with everything including hot sauce and jalapeños (they're not very hot -- it's mostly for taste). The quesadilla is like a burrito but with the tortilla grilled before it is all wrapped up. I don't know why anyone would pick a burrito from here over the quesadilla. Everything else is just inconsequential. The line is long yes but if you're smart you will check if the other preparing station is open on the other side of the register (everyone usually just bunches up on the side closest to the door). The people are not always very friendly but it doesn't really matter just take your burrito and get a table. This is my favorite burrito place in the area. We've sampled quite a few -- Jalisco, El Pelon, Ana's etc. as much as each of those has its pros, Felipe's just has the complete package that others don't. Part of it might be my bias since we've been coming here since starting college in 2004 but Felipe's is special (I just wish they never moved from The Garage). So remember: quesadilla is better than the burrito, carnitas and steak are the best meats.

I walked by this place for years before I ever realized what a great deal it is. Felipe's is one of only a handful of places in Harvard Square where you can get a meal for under $10. And it's good food! For that I am grateful. They have your average mix of Mexican staples--burritos, tacos, quesadillas--as well as things you can't get at Chipotle, like al pastor, fish tacos, shrimp, flautas, etc. Everything tastes authentic. The vibe of the restaurant is, however, closer to your average bland Harvard Square bar. You'll likely be rubbing elbows with Harvard undergrads, their parents, and tourists. The line here can also be a little long (though it moves quickly). Seating--which spans two floors and an outdoor patio on the roof--is ample. To sum up: relatively cheap, quick, well-prepared food + one of the easier places to get a table in Harvard Square = win.

This place was really good, lunch for two $17.00. Great! The salad with the Lime Dressings were amazing. The salsa is great too! There is a roof top bar!
(4)Jill S.
Delicious food and inexpensive with a beautiful rooftop bar! Pros: I enjoyed the tequila slushy that is the margarita and it was pretty strong so a good steal at $8 for Boston's usually overpriced drinks. Delicious food and easy to make healthy if you so wish. Beautiful rooftop bar with cool people frequenting. Cons: Gaining seating at said rooftop bar is a free for all. I had to revert to animalistic tendencies to hunt and gather tables and chairs for a group of 6. We asked a waitress for help, who said she would but then ignored us and sat with her friend at their table for over half an hour. I ordered the dip trio and they charged me for it before telling me they were out of queso and asked if double guac was okay. I get running out of food, but you should let someone know that before charging! My friends I were with were all roadtripping through US from New Zealand, and as such had their NZ identification and a photocopy of their passport but not their passports. They haven't had a problem in 20 cities, but Felipe's demanded a passport. They are all clearly in their mid-twenties and I know this is a tricky issue, but it stunk and the way the bartender enforced the policy was not understanding at all (he was kind of a d*ck.) I think this is a policy that should be revisited or clearly posted on the website, it sucks to be expected to walk around with your passport.

THE BEST. I'm super-picky about Mexican food (spent part of my childhood in Mexico, part in California) and after finding a great sit-down Mexican place (The Painted Burro) felt that my life would not be complete without a burrito joint. Tried Anna's--which is okay--and then found Felipe's, which is AMAZING. Amazing. Everything I've had here is delicious. I particularly love the chicken burrito, but the vegetable burrito--usually dull and lame--is fantastic. Their platters are great, too, as are all their drinks. I am, honestly, addicted to Felipe's. Nearly every day, I think, "hmmmm, I could make lunch or I could go to Felipe's for lunch!" All too often, I go. One last thing: My daughter, who is six, has never liked Mexican food. Until we took her to Felipe's. She's now just as addicted as am I.
(5)Justin K.
Extremely subpar. I tried their food once at their old location and was impressed, but now it's just shitty. I got the quesadilla, and it wasn't even close to being wrapped - all the shit inside came tumbling out, and the only way of making it remotely possible to eat is to keep it in the plastic bag they put it in. Which, by the way, also doubles as a receptacle for all the shit colored juice that comes out. For meat I got the carnitas - way too salty. At first I was surprised by how cheap everything was, but they charge for so many basic additional items. What kind of Mexican food joint doesn't have rice and beans included as part of the complimentary add ons? The fuck? Overall, not a fan. Won't be coming back, and neither should you.
(2)Monica G.
Great location and rooftop. The food is so good at a great price. However, the bartenders are slow, semi-rude and drinks are blah. We got one round from a nice guy on the roof and when down to the first floor for some food and the female bartender ignored us. So after waiting at a not so busy bar for 15 minutes we went elsewhere.
(3)Rebecca C.
So my review is solely for the upstairs bar. As we walked in on a Thursday night the downstairs where the line of food is at was bustling. It looked so much like a chipotle except for the menu had more option. As you walk through the crowd you'll notice a bar with not to many people at it. We went up two flights of stairs to get to the roof deck where it was filled with a whole bunch of young drunk people that kept Bumping into Us with no regard. We were able to order our drinks fairly quickly. We ordered to classic margaritas which came to about 14 in total. The cups were very tiny though, but the margaritas didn't taste sour and had a nice finish to them. I think if I went here again I would stick to one of their many selections of beer. The bartenders were quick and that I give kudos too. I guess being here just isn't worth it because of the fact it's so crowded in such a small area. No moving room, people almost knocking over your drinks, etc..... I would go back only if it was a friends special day of some kind. Pros though: quick bartenders, pretty lights the stream above you..... Yep that's it.

I decided to switch up my lunch time routine and get myself a platos with meat and veggies. I was not charged extra for the veggies to go with my meat. The veggies were delicious and the carnitas were pretty good too. The rice was a little dry but the tortillas were grilled up and greasy. The salsa tasted fresh. I got my food to go and ate in the square. It was too loud inside the shop to really enjoy myself. Staff slopping my food into the styrofoam container were acceptably attentive, clearly stressed out, and short staffed for the lunch crowd. Other people getting food were on their cell phones and chatting while ignoring the line. I felt bad for the staff since the clientele is clearly a little rude. It's pretty inside and clean, if it hadn't been so loud I'd have eaten in. the prices were good- for under $10 I got a styrofoam clamshell container full of steaming hot food. So it's a good value for sure. It was nice enough, but I'm not in a rush to go back.

Why haven't I been here yet??? This place is so cute. Rooftop seating is a must day or night. Outdoor bar is available too! I got a platos, basically chicken, bean, rice, salsa, and corn tortllla. They have this condiment section right before the stairs and it had all the sauces I wanted. They even have pickled beets and jalapeños! I love unlimited condiments. I also love that they have those Mexican sodas, those are delicious. For $6, this is good food.
(5)Shirley L.
This was literally the first place my friends and I stumbled upon when we came to visit Boston, and we were all pretty impressed with how cheap the food was and how big the portions were. Each of us got a $5 burrito which was huge and filled with ingredients. I got the Al Pastor which was caramelized pork, pineapple and cinnamon/guajillo marinade - I was really excited for this because it sounded so interesting and I was expecting all these great flavours from the pineapple and cinnamon, but tbh it didn't taste like anything special to me, just... meat... which made me wonder if they'd gotten my order wrong. Not that the burrito wasn't good, but I was just a little bit disappointed. My only other complaint would be that it is hard to keep track of which ingredients cost extra, especially when it is during the lunchtime rush hour and the employees are all trying to make your burritos super fast and firing questions at you. At the end, after tax, my burrito ended up being $7+ even though I didn't think I got any of the extra charge toppings. One of my friends who basically got the same thing got charged a little bit less than me as well. Despite the minor frustrations, I still think Felipe's is a good value for what you get - wish we'd known about the rooftop patio while we were there, because it looks really cool!
(4)Nicole Jean T.
Felipe's is the best. Just about everyone I know regularly drives into town to enjoy Felipe's. This new location is great because now there is always seating and the line goes faster. The line is normally to/out the door. I highly reccomend the fresh lemonade. For those who haven't been here, the line works like Chipotle. The food tastes way better though, and has ruined other Spanish type fast food for me because nothing is ever good enough if it isn't Felipe's. There is also a full bar and an upstairs patio. We love you Felipe's!
(5)Andrew B.
The drinks are great, but the food was just OK. Service was decent, too. I went with a friend. Each of us had a burrito, and we felt they were lacking in flavor. I like heat, so I was wishing for salsa.
(3)Anand S.
Borderline 3-4 star place on food alone - got a grilled vegetable burrito and the vegetables are some of the best I've had at any taqueria. They're made on the fire grill that's visible behind the assembly line, nicely charred, and cut fresh in front of you. The rest of the burrito was pretty standard though, and as a bigggggggg fan of cheese in my Mexican food, I thought they go kind of light. There's ample options for fillings (although I'd actually stay away from the sweet onions, felt like they sort of overpowered) and 4-5 sauces that were all pretty good, but nothing spectacular. Overall, a solid but probably not spectacular burrito. However, the rating gets bumped up by the overall feel of the restaurant. A super lively place, a couple of bars (one inside, one outside), and just overall a fun spot. I don't really have a good way of describing it other than than it's a cool place to get food and hang out at the roof bar having a couple drinks with friends. Will definitely be coming back
(4)Alex K.
The food wasn't great, but I had literally no idea what I ordered. The staff seemed pretty disinterested in serving me. I couldn't really hear what they were saying and they weren't really making an effort to speak up. We tried to go to the rooftop but by the time we made it up there, apparently two separate private parties occupying the space. Go to Chipotle instead. It's really close.
(2)Michelle S.
2.5 stars, rounded up because I really like Mexican food. I was a big fan of Felipe's when it was still small and bustling. But now it seems the growth has been too much to handle. The smaller location used to have a long line for lunch, and the burritos were super cheap and super flavorful. Now, the ambience is more spacious, but there are basically no lines (I've never seen the place even close to packed), and the quality of food decreased. The burrito I got went from around $4.70 to $6.30, and the flavor was a huge let down. I don't know what happened Felipe's!! For that price, I might as well pay an extra dollar and just go to Chipotle across the street. The service is also quite flippant. Personal opinion, but the restaurant should have focused on doing a few things really well, instead of trying to do everything (i.e. its expanded menu) but compromising flavor and quality.
(3)David O.
Terrible service, terrible drinks, called last night to find out hours of operation giving me the wrong info and telling me 3am (shame on me for not checking the website) drove 25 mts (225am) to find out as soon as I approached the line that they were closed, lock your doors, train your staff to do a better job. It is unacceptable. To the owner don't just be behind the bar ( if you are check the drinks) margaritas are terrible but also check your food line may be you need to see where are your bottle necks and temperatures quality of food and other factors. Would i go back? May be during the day at night it is just a s*** hole
(1)Shendi X.
I used to come to Felipe's occasionally when I lived in the area. Back then, it was small, and felt both down-to-earth, and high quality. Good product, fair prices, and accessible overall. Hoping the new, larger location maintains the same spirit! Recommended.
(4)TK W.
I know how our reviews can influence a business, but it is a fact and it is how I feel about this place. I don't understand why this place is packed. Both food and service were unacceptable. I ordered a super burrito. it was like a small from Anna's or Tenoch. For some reason the guy thinks I am too fat (I am kidding) or something, before I finished saying what I want in the burrito, he already wrapped it up. It is like, enough no toppings for you. I think my request wasn't unual. Chicken super burrito, sour cream, pinto beans, pico de gallo. In stead of pico de gallo, he slapped in guacamole. I said pico de gallo. He starred at me like what are you going to do? I said again pico de gallo. Then he wrapped up my burrito and passed it to cashier. Unbelievable. just completed know I want something else and ignored me. I wanted hot sauce too, but he turned away to next person. He did not care. I now have this negative thinking that if his attitude was like this, how clean would he keep the food and the place? My brother said if he see this in his restaurants, he would have a serious 1 on 1 talk. Most likely this guy would be gone. These attitude doesn't happen once and will retaliate. My brother ordered a fish plate. You would not believe how tiny 2 fish fingers were. I am not exaggerating, they are seriously as short and skinny like your pinky. just 2 of those fish fingers, rice and bean. horrible. We cannot comment on the taste because there is nothing to taste. Horrible experience. I usually do not give this hash judgement for a single visit, but I am now forever dislike this joint.
(1)Kathy L.
Worst service in my life, we sat at the bar and after a while of being unnoticed we ask for a drink menu, the bartender grabbed one and landed on one of my tacos, without saying a word. We never got asked if we wanted a drink, horrible service. Only reason I give them two stars is because the food, which was very good, carnitas tacos highly recomended.
(2)Isabella C.
The beauty of Felipes lies in its long hours and now, in its ambiance. The new store is modern and classic all at once, with mood lighting and plenty of seating, as well as a nice bar space. The tacos and quesadillas are fairly average though they do make them in two sizes (large and small). The small size is perfect for a craving if you don't want to eat too much at once or late at night. They do let you pick your toppings and they make them on the spot so you can customize and you're usually guaranteed a fresh taste and nice texture (nothing soggy!). Their staff were not the most courteous or well-versed in their own menu. We've often had mix-ups with drink or dessert orders. One time we ordered the rice pudding and a soda and they charged us for the former but not the latter; lots of confusion ensued. I usually find these mix-ups a bit frustrating and find that they're all too common here. That being said, they are usually quite busy so this may be a factor in the service. (And it is, after all, fast food.) All in all though, not a bad place for a late night snack. Food is not particularly outstanding but atmosphere is wonderful.
(3)Kunal C.
Visited the rooftop for drinks on a weeknight. Place was packed with the Harvard crowd but we managed to get a spot at the bar. The drinks selection on the rooftop is limited to margaritas and beer. If you want something else you have to go to the bar downstairs. There is also a 1 drink limit per person. The margaritas are fresh (no pre mix) but they're not great. I feel like they're missing something, a little bit of contreau or triple sec perhaps.
(2)Sean J.
Felipe's used to be my go-to 5 star Yelp burrito joint in Harvard Square --- not anymore. Since they have moved, the quality, service and value has dropped significantly. Not sure what happened, but the ingredients they now use are substandard to those which were previously found in their burritos. I have tried the carnitas, pollo tinga and chorizo since they moved and only the pollo tinga was as good as it was before. They also now give you far less meat in a burrito, and they are slapped together messily and with less overall fillings. The most noticeable change is the service, which is strange because they have seemingly all the same employees as before. Maybe they didn't like the move? Every time I have gone since the move the servers have been rude and inattentive when taking my order. I don't really care that they have a roof deck or bar now, their food is not good anymore.
(2)Annabel J.
Roof top bar!! Decent Mexican with full bar which makes it way better than chipotle. And very cheap!
(3)Christy L.
The price is right and the food is consistently good! I love their tacos. It's always fresh. The only downside is the line. As long as you time it correctly you will have no wait. The new location has a roof deck, so it's a great little spot to hang out.
(5)J L.
Great burritos, friendly service, well priced, lively atmosphere! Although the quesadilla was rolled up which was odd to me, I expected it folded over and with more cheese. I will request it that way next time. I felt the portions were good. Can't wait to go back.
(5)Jess B.
Good, food. It would be nice if they had table service. The roof deck is nice, but you have to walk up 3 flights of stairs with your food, and then go all the way back down if you forget a fork. The set up is annoyingly complicated.
(3)Daniel C.
I've been going to Felipe's for years and I don't know why I haven't reviewed them yet. Here's my piece of mind. Before they expanded and moved to a new location, I would've given them a four-star review. However, for some strange reason, they have drastically changed since they moved. Not sure why they're trying to expand the menu when they should just focus on what they do the best and thrive from that. When they were at their last location, their burritos were cheap and extremely tasteful with good flavor. You really get the best bang for the buck. Now, it seems like they're trying to turn this thing into a chain and up sell their food. The quality has dropped and that nostalgic, delicious flavor disappeared. What happened? The good thing is that they still let you choose your toppings and have it created on the spot to ensure the freshness of the food, nothing is worse than a soggy quesadilla and burritos. Overall, I wish they didn't try to go all "Restaurant-y" and upscale their place; this isn't their strong suit, maybe it will take a bit for them to reach that level and perhaps their food will return back to what it was. But for now, I went from a big fan to someone who might just go there once in a while.
(3)Marcus M.
I loved Felipe's before, back when it was in the old location in Harvard Square. Now, with a new, fancier location with more room and more seating (including upstairs seating) this place is as good as it gets. The burritos are quality yet inexpensive and a range of options are available, such as pork (pulled, chorizo, and at least one other pork option that I can remember), beef, chicken, and vegetarian. Everything tastes fresh and the food is made in front of you, how you want it, and completed rather quickly. The only obstacle to that is the long line, which you will find because so many people want to come because it's so good! Now Felipe's has a BAR with multiple tequilas and beers to drink. When I saw this, I had to text my friends. I now see absolutely no reason to go anywhere else for a bite to eat, especially if you want quality Mexican fare. Stop by Felipe's and let it bless your life. Seriously, go by there. Get a super burrito. Dooooooo iiiiiiiiiitttttt!

Definitely check out Felipe's if you're looking for some fast and delicious food! It's also a good for groups--they have tables upstairs that you can put together to seat around 10 people. The burritos, quesadillas, and the nachos are all pretty good! You can't really go wrong coming here.
(4)Rachel Y.
I'm originally from Los Angeles, and I have to tell you that the flavors are pretty good. My friend and I both agreed that it was pretty legit. The tortilla alone amazed me because the only time I've had a tortilla like that was in California. It's situated literally almost next to Chipotle, which is why I totally understand everyone keeps comparing the two, but this stuff is different. It's like comparing oranges and apples in my opinion. One thing we didn't like: you get charged for everything you add that isn't included in the burrito/quesadilla/whatever. An extra $1 for lettuce? Makes you kind of uncomfortable they're so eager to charge for everything, but that's business I guess.
(4)Michael C.
My favorite Burrito in the Boston Area. I'm used to West Coast Burritos and these guys do it a bit differently but equally amazing. Perfectly grilled chicken, flavorful everything. Just quality all around. Very nice staff, clean. The new location was well worth the wait. Roof deck!
(5)Heather L.
New location, same bland food...admittedly most of my experiences here have been during quests for drunk food, but I had some strange high hopes that the new location would also mean better food. Not so much. Maybe I should stick to coming here drunk. It's cheap though they charge for extras, but the receipt has no indication of what extras they charged you for. I know there's prices on the board, but where did the extra $3 dollars come from? No one exactly knows. If you're coming drunk, they will probably overcharge you. But let's be real, you probably are so hungry, that is the least of your concerns. Also nachos come in a huge portion size. Definitely shareable. Quesadillas will look strange, more like folded flat burritos. Don't worry, that's normal. Pro tip: there are two lines. One closer to the door that's usually longer, skip it and go to the other side.
(3)Kim P.
My favorite burrito place. Now that it's in this new, ginormous space, it makes the experience even better. Carnitas burrito is always good, as are the quesadillas. And queso, too? Just have it all. It's only gonna cost you at most $10. Go all in.
(5)Christina V.
I've always been a Felipe's fan and their new location is impressive! They went from a little hole in the wall to a nice restaurant/bar. They've doubled probably tripled their size and it looks great. Sure they nickel and dime you for some ingredients but they are super fresh and flavorful. Wasn't able to get drinks when I stopped in Sunday afternoon but I'll be sure go back at night.

Food was okay, the staff needs to focus more on the conditions on how the serving station looks. When I was having my burrito made there was food remnants all over the place, in other containers all over the stations. The general manager was also the rudest person. I was not impressed with his general tone or how he spoke to the customer, when a couple and my self with outside for a cigarette he would not let us back on the roof even after we explained we had just gone outside for a cigarette he was going to make us wait in line or said we could leave. He did not have any concern for the bar tenders making a tip or having he drinks paid for. Very negligent. If I can give some feedback, this place needs some real quality control and focus on being clean and attentive to the customers.

A great new little spot in Harvard Square. They definitely got good food down, all they need to do now is iron out all the little kinks (it is these that cost this place two stars) Location itself is clean, and feels like a little hideaway somewhere underground in Mexico. They do have an unfinished bar that is a work in progress, but since I am not 21 yet, this did NOT cost this place any stars. I had tacos with Al Pastor meat (Marinated Pork) Taco "shells" were made of two pleasant soft shells lightly warmed and oiled. Meat and vegetables were delightfully fresh and tasty. They also have a little station with hot sauces sauces, little lime wedges, and tap water (all free) Chips were plentiful, inexpensive, and house-made, while I personally like chips a little thicker, I am not complaining. (well, okay maybe a bit, but it didn't cost any stars) Now, the little kinks: You come in, and there is no specific designated place to order, or wait in line. Service is polite, but could be a little more familiar with the menu. For instance, Tacos come with a onion-cilantro salsa, which I had to ask for. Taco/burrito fillings could be labeled. Also wish you could get utensils and napkins without asking for them, and that there were more salt and pepper shakers/packets throughout the location. All kinks aside, muy bien ("very good" - for those of you who don't know Spanish)

We've been back since they opened the roof top bar and the bar downstairs. This place is great. It's still got great food, and their flan has caramel discs again! It's probably just burnt sugar from slight overcooking but it's so good...seriously, the flan is better with it. Now, on top of the great (cheap, huge portions, enough for 2) food, they have a roof top bar and it's awesome! I love this place. I will be back even more now for their roof top bar.
(5)Lilah D.
The new location is fantastic! The other one had very limited seating and the new space is very welcoming, clean, and open. It has more of a formal restaurant feel with the same classic Felipe's good that we've all come to know and love. As always, the quesadilla I ordered was delicious and authentic. Felipe's holds a very special place in my heart and I can honestly say the new location was well worth the wait.
(5)William S.
I never had a chance to visit the old location, so trying this new larger space was high on my list. Hopefully my experience is just a symptom of the recent move (about a week), or the fact that my visit was for weekday lunch, but I was disappointed. The food was bland. The Baha Fish Tacos were soggy and poorly seasoned. I'm pretty sure the fish wasn't fried to order - a simple enough task that would have made all the difference. The tamales, while understandably pre-prepared, were barely warm. It's sad that the best parts of my meal was the sour cream and Pico de gallo. Maybe I'll have a different opinion after another visit, but for now, Anna's is worth the 10 minute walk away from here.
(2)amy b.
For a meal under $10 this is hard to beat, especially after the renovation. Oh, also has roof top seating with full bar included in that price. Burrito is solid, baja tacos with fried shrimp is just kinda wonderful. Been twice and ordered this both times and probably won't deviate. We went late Sunday, and there a few drunk college kids being sloppy at the bar. And it was super busy, which I think is why the ingredients were so good (=fresh).
(5)Izzy G.
Comparable to Anna's but this new location is kind of a mad house. The lines don't really move/ the counter service is confusing but the separate bar is a nice addition. Good choice for kids to eat a big meal on the cheap( not necessarily authentic Mexican) but the crowds can get kind of overwhelming.
(3)Ms.Mae W.
Go to Chipotle instead!! They have good prices, but the problem is that you pay for the main item but you also pay for things aka cart... Corn is an extra .50 and .90 for CHEESE!!! (WHAT?! Cheese??) Also it seems none of the employees speak English making it hard to get order you want. In addition I will add that I went mid-winter so there was not very many tourist, but the staff still seemed flustered. Its high stress but it seems popular. I would not recommend this to a friend.
(2)G U.
We have been craving Mexican food with good hot sauce so we decided to give the new location a try. The new location is nice, lots of seating, and we like the open feeling. I wish I could give the same positive comments about the food. We ordered a veg plate, veg burrito, and chicken burrito. And wow the quality has decreased. The food doesn't taste the same and the hot sauce (my favorite thing about felipes) tasted watered down. Its a shame that such a great Mexican restaurant has decreased its quality for money. We also tried the churro and vanilla custard. The churro was good (but we still prefer costcos) and the custard was scooped from the basement somewhere and tasted like plain vanilla ice cream. Overall our meal was disappointing and we won't be back for awhile or until reviews go higher. And we agree with previous reviewers who have been loyal Felipe's eaters.

I've mentioned before my lack of trust when it comes to restaurants in Harvard Square. A while back, Osushi was a wonderful surprise (click here for that review). Unfortunately my latest food adventure in Harvard Square failed miserably, so much so that Felipe's Taqueria isn't even going to get a second chance with me. But before this little doggy gets down and dirty, let me preface this by saying that I was there midweek for lunch, and about 20 minutes after they opened for the day. This does not excuse them from the crap I was served, but I wanted to put it out there. In my mind, there is nothing better than digging your paws into a plate of hot, melty, ooey, gooey nachos - nothing! As this was my first visit to Felipe's I decided to give them a go. I knew I was in trouble with they started peeling precut slabs of white cheese and draped it over the plate of corn chips. Really? Can't they even bother with something other than processed cheese slices? The nachos came with guacamole. Wow, you might be saying usually that extra. I would have rather paid extra for fresh guacamole rather than the brown stuff left over from the day before. The refried beans were soggy. The grilled vegetables were hit or miss as well. Some were barely cooked and crunched in my mouth while others were so overcooked they just sort of disintegrated. After about six bites of this retched dish I had had enough. I picked up the plate and dumped it in the plastic bin. Never, ever again! With all the other "fast food" Mexican restaurants around, you would think Felipe's would try a bit harder. As for me? You'll find me down the street at Chipotle or Qdoba. These little paws will never cross the door of Felipe's again. My rating 2 paws With love from my dog bowl to yours... Shatasdogbowl

Authentic Mexican food is served here. I got the Shrimp tacos and they were fresh and filling. Although there was a long line, service was quick. We stopped for lunch.
(5)Angie R.
Let's just say Felipe's Burritos are OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!!! Best Burrito's in town. I work right down the street so I always make sure I stop at Felipe's for a quick bite. The Tostadas and Nachos are delicious as well. Don't forget to try their Nachos and Horchata too!
(5)Brian Y.
When you see a location with a line to the entryway at 1 AM, you either think its a place for quick food for drunken people....or its a location for really tasty quick food....thankfully, Its a place for both. The only reason why I gave this place 3/5 instead of 4/5 is because I had to wait in line again for a second burrito while I asked for 2....I was very confused during the purchase of the first one why I didn't get asked what I wanted on the 2nd burrito. That withheld, the food, while simple, was extremely delicious. I had a chimichanga, as part of my after work, hurrah meal for Friday. I will say, the peppers are delightfully spicy, condiments are adequately flavored, and the food is as filling as I'd hoped it would be. Really great stuff, Ill be back!

I'm writing this review as I'm standing in line behind 5 people. It's been 15 minutes already and I haven't even ordered yet. In the old location, they used to be able to turn out 5 orders in 2 minutes. Now, they've raised the prices, service to a standstill, and quality sucks... just not the same anymore.
(1)Meredith D.
The food was okay. I got the steak quesadilla, the flavor was fine, the steak was dry, definitely not as good as Anna's. What upset me the most was the terrible service. My mother asked for tacos and the guy put them on a plate to eat there, she asked if she could take them to go and the guy rudely responded with an attitude, "you should have said that at the beginning." He never asked my mom if it was to eat there or go so how were we suppose to know we had to say it at the beginning? There was no need for the attitude, we are paying customers. Not going back there again.
(2)Cristobal C.
Excellent Tacos. Nice decor, great tacos, solid portions (Too much food!!), prices are very competitive. The place was also very clean and tidy. The location is great. We hope they stay here for a while.
(3)Todd D.
Update; Tried them again, the food was much better. My fiance just has to stay away from anything that goes near the fryer. One of the owners came and spoke to us, he was nice. Nothing really to write home about but it's ok.

At first I wasn't convinced that this was an authentic burrito or not (I've had burritos in many states in Mexico, each having a touch of their own). There was something different about Felipe's Taqueria. I did so googling and saw that they have multiple locations in New Orleans as well, and it all came together. They had a touch of Nola, and I absolutely loved it! I ordered the super burrito with brown rice/beans, cheese, salsa, lettuce, carnitas, hot sauce, guacamole, and sour cream. My total came less to $9.50. So yeah, their prices are amazing as well. I loved the location and their interior design, very spacious, and I've only heard great things about their rooftop (3rd floor). It's hard to escape the long queues that reach the business next door, but it's worth the wait. My only complaint; your sour cream. I wish it wasn't so liquified and tubed. Besides that, GREAT place!
(4)Jasmine C.
Came here once because I was told that it's very good, affordable Mexican in Harvard square. What I was really craving was nachos, oozing with cheese and with a good bit of guacamole and all things bad you really want with nachos, but when I ordered it they literally threw on one slice of tasteless American cheese on a pile of tortillas, so little guacamole and it was mostly beans and then a strange addition of Jalapeño. It was really like eating tortillas more than anything else because the toppings were so scarce for the price paid...
(2)DoubleYouPee D.
Better than Anna's, better than Boca (sorry to the Kamio siblings)! I'd eat the quesidilla every day if I could. Yumfest!
(5)Kyle G.
Best food value in Harvard Square? Quite possibly if you get a super burrito for around $6 depending on your choices. After a few years in the garage and another year jammed in with Flat Patties, this new, huge location has the same great food you expect in a huge room, with a roof deck in the nice weather. Beer and wine, too.
(4)Carmen A.
The food here is worth the wait. It does not matter the time of day.. there's always a line. The prices are reasonable and the food is great.
(4)Janka L.
pros *roof deck *strong margaritas *no cover *prices are meh but not bad cons -one night roof deck closed at 1am, next night 2am? so idk when they actually close -sometimes there are creeps, other times you feel like a pedophile around the young'uns, so bring a friendly crew with you for more fun -don't remember music, but at one point celine dion was playing, so...
(4)BP Y.
The food is awesome here and I am a regular at Felipe's. BUT tonight the bar service was really careless and neglectful. When i sat at the bar and tried to get a drink, the bartenders completely ignored me while serving other customers. I am sure that they saw me while I tried to order patiently multiple times. After a half an hour waiting, everyone at the bar had a beverage except for me. So I left right after I quickly finished my food, which was at its usual great quality. I will keep going there for food but will most likely stop trying to get drinks there from now on.
(2)Nico D.
First visit, great burrito and dessert, seating on the roof is an nice option, we loved it
(5)Reena J.
The pros: (1) New location has fantastic seating space with equally fantastic ambiance. (2) $5 burritos. The cons: (1) Sour cream should not come out of a squirt bottle. It should have a texture that holds peaks, not gloppy like mayo. (2) You can turn your $5 burrito into a chimichanga for $2.50. You may wonder why the last point is a con. It's because I realize I'm paying extra to make my burrito less healthy (i.e. deep fry it and douse it in cheese sauce). I pony up because the chimichanga is that much more delicious, but I feel like a sucker afterwards. For better sour cream and a $6.50 chimichanga I'd enthusiastically give 5 stars.

Yuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmm. Salsa baaaaarrrrrrrrrrrr.....varriiieetttyyyyyyyy.....Âloooovveeee iiittttt

Felipes is THE best. Although there might be many choices in the Boston area I would say felipes is the place to look no further for some good Mexican food, and at a great price too! Nestled in the heart of Harvard square, can be a tough sometimes to find parking but certainly worth the drive in there is a parking lot on the side street behind felipes. Every time I make it out to the city felipes is most certainly the spot I hit, and with their brand new location and soon to be third floor roof dining it is sure a place to stop in for a brew, fine bourbon or just plain old fashioned food that Dosen't cost you a fortune.
(4)Alex M.
As a Californian (who often visits Harvard square) I surprise a lot of people when I tell them my favorite burrito place is in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Honestly, it's a crime against humanity that this place has only 3 stars here. Some of these people here are writing that they prefer Qdoba and Chipotle. Seriously!? I'm sorry, but if you prefer Chipotle over Felipe's you probably have no soul and I pity you. So why is Felipe's so good. To start the tortillas soft, fluffy, and delicious. They are also heated and pressed so that your tortilla is the same temperature as the rest of the ingredients. When you ask for cheese, the cheese is actually melted into your tortilla at the beginning of the process rather than sprinkled on as an afterthought. Rice is cooked in vegetable stock to savory perfection. Miles better than the flavorless dry white rice you receive from Chipotle. Meats are always tender and packed with flavor. Add in beans, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, and hot sauce and you have yourself one dam good burrito. In addition, Felipe's has excellent variety on the menu offering tacos, nachos, quesadillas, chimichangas, and more. For me the icing on the cake is the great horchata, a hallmark of a true mexican burrito joint. All this at nice low prices makes Felipe's a winner.
(5)M.J. W.
It's not the same, I hope your owner or staff realizes that your food is not as good when you were at your old location.Based on other reviews quality has gone down and your prices have gone up. It's sad I have always believed Felipe's was one of those establishment that make up Harvard square. I really hope things go back to the way they were, tasty affordable food. Nice restaurant by the way but that is all I can say.
(2)Trice B.
Their al-pastor taco is to die for.I mean to me.... you're not really a real Taqueria unless you have al-pastor on your menu. What I espcially love about this place, is that I am served immpecable food, fast, and at a low price. I also love the portions! Large and in charge!
(4)Gabe R.
This place has gone downhill since moving out of Flat Patties and into their own space. I gave them several chances to work the kinks out, but I'm done. Raised prices and nickel-and-diming for add-ons (50 cents for a handful of corn? Really?) makes them on par with Chipotle by the time you get to the register. And how hard is it to put a tray of silverware out? Each time I ask, I'm pointed to a random spot in the restaurant that has no silverware. I end up waiting to get a cashier's attention just for a fork. Today she handed me a plastic fork wrapped in a soggy napkin. I handed it back. Eew. Only reason it's not one star is the food is still decent.
(2)Gabriel R.
The new space is just as great as anyone anticipated. However, there has been a rise in prices and Felipe's is now serving lower quality and smaller burritos. It is not the place to go get a cheap burrito for 5 dollars or less anymore and that is disappointing to me. I prefer Anna's Taqueria and Chipotle now.
(3)Ghalib S.
Aside from the tasty food and popularity of this place, it seems to have been thoughtfully designed. The lighting, the interior decoration, the use of LED lights, the large windows that can be left open in the summer. It was nice to see all that.
(5)Rick B.
I was very excited to hear that Felipes had moved over and expanded their other store in Harvard Square. I walked in and saw how big the place was and saw that they had a bar that opens at noon. Then it went downhill from that point on. I found out that it's not a full-service bar and then I had to get into a separate line like a cafeteria for my food and then go to the bar and order a drink when I ordered the drink they didn't have the ingredients for the drink which confused me because if you going to focus on the bar and not food you would think they would have all the ingredients for the drinks. Then I found out that there was a new bar that just opened on the third floor and is a roof deck I got very excited for this it's not something you see often in Harvard Square. I got up to the bar only to find out that 75% of the bar was empty and they could only make one kind of margarita and they sold Latin soda as well. In my mind if you're not serving food and your opening the bar why don't you have more the one option? So I had to go downstairs to the first floor bar get a drink and go upstairs to the third floor roof deck bar to enjoy myself. I will go back again only when the full-service bar is really full service
(2)Josh S.
This used to be my favorite burrito place in Massachusetts. The food was incredibly flavorful, well priced, and just all around awesome. I went again tonight for the first time since they moved.... what happened? There was hardly any meat on the burrito, the meat that was there was incredibly bland, the pinto beans were hard and tasteless, and the rice had absolutely no flavor either. This place is a shell of what it used to be, and that breaks my heart. What a shame.
(2)Teresa S.
Really disappointed by the new prices and menu. I loved Felipe's for what it was before-cheap, easy and delicious. They got rid of the rice and beans option (just meat and vegetables) and are charging for extras that they didn't before. Burrito tasted meh.
(3)Anna C.
So after dining at the Felipe's in New Orleans this one is the biggest disappointment. I ordered the same thing and it didn't taste as good but I was willing to let it go. Until I asked for sangria and was told they don't have any. After frequenting the New Orleans location for Tuesday Sangria specials. I was extremely disappointed. They need to step it up.
(2)Waylon B.
Filipe's used to be my default place to go when I'm looking for really good cheap burritos in Harvard Square. They've moved to a bigger yet fancier place which was nice but as far as having really good cheap burritos, they can no longer claim that title. The small burritos (chicken, no guac, no sour cream) used to be under five dollars. Now they're two dollars more and the burritos are even smaller. Not really sure it's worth it as there are cheaper burrito places in the area.
(2)A W.
Back in Cambridge for graduation. Decided to return to one of my favorite burrito establishments that has moved to Harvard Square. I was also exited that they have a bar here! The food was still awesome, but the bartender was a HUGE jerk! Also, they were only serving 4 out of the 12 drinks on the menu. Won't return any time soon.
(1)Joshua S.
Definitely gives Chipotle a run for its money. This coming from a diehard Chipotle fan.
(5)Ms. S.
Mere moments ago, I went all nature channel on a chorizo burrito from here. It was amazing and I regret nothing. The chorizo here is fantastic. It's properly rendered when it's cooked, but there's still the little bit of spicy fat clinging to the meat that mixes with the other fillings (and gets absorbed by the rice) to make this hedonistic Mexican flavor experience in your mouth. It's ridiculous how good this is. I love this place.
(5)Orad R.
Best Mexican food in the square. I'm in shock it only has 3 starts for the new location! The food's still as good as ever, still as affordable, and the space is much bigger and nicer than before
(5)Colin B.
The best place for cheap California style tacos and Burritos in Harvard Square. They make pretty good nachos too. After a bit of a rough transition to their new location they seem to have found their footing.
(4)Mario R.
Carnitas burrito was excellent. As was the margarita. All for $15. Will definitely return.
(4)Mick J.
Serve me raw chicken, lose me as a customer. Never again.
(1)Christine E.
This is the new location of Felipe's. It is much larger than the old location in Harvard Sq. They also have a bar. And the food is great as usual.
(5)Daniela C.
Food was great but overall service, ordering and dining experience was bad enough for me to not plan on coming back. 1) right when I walk in, I see a line, so I stand in it for a few minutes until someone tells me the line is on the other side. Some of go over there and speak to a woman behind the counter at the register. She asks what we ordered. We hadn't yet so she points us again to the other end of the counter. It is clearly very confusing on where to stand or order. 2) once we get to the place where we are supposed to order, the staff is very curt and not very helpful. I speak Spanish (Mexican native) so I assume speaking Spanish will help me get better service. It doesn't really. Still unfriendly, curt with no smiles or eye contact. 3) I finally pay and go to sit down when I realize I can't find any napkins or forks. They don't put them out. So I had to scooch between the two lines that are ordering to grab some by the register and no forks anywhere. I didn't want to wait in line to ask for one. 4) salsa: I love salsa, so I go to the little stand. They do not label the degree of spiciness of any of the salsas. I don't really mind but I know that is an important detail. 5) the tacos: they were great! They taste pretty much how Mexican street tacos should taste. Tacos are my favorite food and these are up to snuff for tacos outside of Mexico. I gave this place 2 stars because the service was really bad, they don't give any direction to their customers and as a result seem annoyed with their customers and it is difficult to enjoy my dining experience. I was just annoyed by the experience. All they need to do is a few simple things to improve: 1) put a sign up of where to order and where to pay. 2) the staff should learn to smile and be less annoyed with customers. 3) label the salsas at the salsa stand 4) put out napkins and utensils on tables to be easily accessible. That's all. I've said what I needed to say. Please get better Felipe's bc you're losing customers and it's a shame bc your food is actually quite good. But only having good food does not make a good restaurant.
(2)Meaghan C.
Delicious!! I ordered a chimichanga and it was perfectly made. Had the taste of homemade and not commercial. Definitely coming back.
