I love soup and this is good soup. I am ashamed to say I have lived close by for almost 2 years and just recently tried this place. I love there combos. You can get soup and salad with rolls for a discounted price. Great! Every soup I have tried has been great. I love how there is different soups available every time I go. I can't wait to try the gazpacho. It is on the pricey side even if it is homemade. Also, your order has to come to $10 or more to use a credit card.

Great soups for a cool fall afternoon! Too bad though about all of the wasteful plastic and styrofoam. Real dishes would really enhance the experience, and save some landfill space to boot.

How can it get any better than chilled soups on a hot day?!?!

They have the best soup. The staples are the New England Clam Chowder and the Chicken Noodle soup. Both are excellent choices and will never fail you. They also have gazpachio in the summer and there are at least 8 other soups daily, ranging from beef stew to tomato and crab bisque *my all time favorite, but haven't seen it on the menu for a long time*. All the soup is served with a fresh roll (which can be a bit tough, but even better for dipping) They use to make really good gourmet sandwiches...which are made to order. But to make things more efficient for the rush lunch hour crowd, they no longer have that available - a BIG disappointment. Now they serve pre-made roll-up sandwiches and side salads packed in boxes in their frig....looking a bit pathetic. Yeah, I'm bitter that they don't make those sandwiches anymore, they use to have a great chicken club with bacon, avocado, their house dressing on your choice of bread (marble for me).

A hidden gem! I'm actually shocked that there are so few reviews on Soup Factory, it's almost always busy. This isn't the best place to dine-in (the space is small), though there are tables available. No table service, you order at the counter and sit down to eat. Great for take out. The line moves quick, the staff is super friendly & is always happy to give you a sample so you can be sure you're making the right choice! All soups are homemade, and I've tried many including the chicken pot pie, baked potato, split pea with spinach, etc. I'm always happy with my selection! I also like that all soups are served with either a french or whole wheat roll, and that there is always a vegetarian option (or two). The soups come in colorful tupperware containers, of which I have many & re-use! I've also tried the chicken avacado wrap which includes boursin cheese- very good, the turkey havarti wrap, and the pear & goat cheese salad (I think that was a special)- everything is always very fresh. They also have combos so you can get half a sandwich & soup. I suggest finishing your lunch/dinner with a revel bar- chocolate & oatmeal & very delicious! Credit/debit cards accepted. Oh, and they have a website so you can see what they are serving that day- soup offerings change on a daily basis. Check them out: newenglandsoupfactory.co…

I am a huge fan of soup, so I love this place. I work newrby in Brookline, and I often grab a bowl of soup. The Lobster Newburg is great, with big chunks of lobster. The website lists the daily specials everday, and I check it every morning to see if anything sounds good (with 9 soups, something usually sounds good).

Every time I come to this place I leave disappointed, never again will that happen as they have lost this customer.... I ordered the Chicken Avocado wrap and as usual the wrap is completely full of greens and had hardly any chicken, avocado or cheese in it. However this time I had a piece of chicken in my wrap that certainly was NOT chicken. To top it off the staff is rude and their $6 minimum rule to use your credit card is so completely outdated, ridiculous, and possibly even illegal. I highly recommend going elsewhere!!!

I went with the pint of Clam & corn chowder which came with 2 rolls for $6.50. While I liked that the New England Soup Factory gave additional rolls to go with the larger portions of soup, and that they offered both french and multigrain, I found the multigrain roll to be a bit tough and the soup on the peppery side. I will, however, be willing to return to try some of their other offerings since they have my friend's beloved huge brown sugar chocolate chip cookies and two frozen pints for the price of one - just check out the freezer on the left for that day's options.

We found this little place on a warm June day and loved it. Can't imagine how awesome it would be when Boston is below freezing temperature! Loved their chicken soup with lemon and orzo. Lobster Newburg could use more than 2 pieces of lobster in a pint, but still tasty. Location: steps from the Brookline Village stop on the Green line. Facility: clean, neat little place with a few tables. Don't plan on a sit down meal during rush lunch hours! Food: great selection tasty soups (both hot and cold) with good ingredients (their chicken and seafood chunks taste like real food and not Campbell's), a bit salty but hey that is why I like soup! Could use a bit more chicken/lobster etc though! Price: awesome! $4.50 for a sandwich, soups come with bread, soup combos are about $10, give for take a few $ depending on soup size. It will fill you up! Service: fast and friendly enough by New England standard, meaning no welcoming smile but at least I haven't gotten yelled at... yet! Conclusion: will be back!

I really love all their soups and go there whenever I get a chance. Tonight however I want to go and realized they have their summer hours and they closed at six. Yelp doesn't have their summer hours online has no summer hours nowhere does it list the summer hours until you go there wanting soup and see what they have no soup because they're closed. Great sadness

I am rather embarrassed that I have lived near the Brookline Village T stop for so long and never tried this place before! I didn't feel like cooking one night so I stopped in here for some soup and a salad. The soup was delicious and the salad was very nice and fresh. I will be back!

I would've given The Soup Factory 4 stars but changed that to 2 since they still pummel the soups with salt. Really great variety of soups. I have come to this place for 8+ years. However, am extremely disappointed that they are using MSG. Their soups are good but definitely on the salty side. I called and spoke with the owner, asking for a offer of a low sodium/non msg version and she became very defensive. She stated that she had not heard any complaints about the salt levels. Hmmm, seems like she was caught in a little white lie on that one. Many here have specifically commented on the salty nature of these soups. As others have mentioned, don't promote how healthy, organic & kid friendly your food is while killing us with salt.

A mid day errand is a pain in the ass. A place next door that serves healthy lunch quick? Sign me up! A simple request to not throw cheese in a salad was met with a surly "they're already made". Sure enough, the glass counter was filled with salads packaged in plastic bowls just like in a gas station. While scanning the menu board for something else, the guy kept hassling me "do you want anything or what..." Maybe I was keeping him from facebook? There wasn't a line. So I got something. I asked for chicken on it, assuming it would be a chicken breast. Silly me. I ended up with a couple thin strips sort of equivalent to one single slice of deli meat. They asked what dressing should come with it. Oil and vinegar, I asked. But, no. Alas, the simplest most basic type of salad dressing is not on offer at the place with the sign that blares salads. They had a variety of premixed stuff on offer. But half the point of getting salad is avoiding mystery ingredients. Could I have asked what's in the dressing? Maybe if I wanted to strike up a conversation with the irritated guy behind the counter. Whatevs. I just will head elsewhere next time.

Couple of weeks ago got a Sand (walkable from work) very bland. Premade which had I looked here first would not have bothered. Could only taste the mustard. Have not tried the soups only because I've heard from coworkers that they can be quite salty. I like salt but not ocean water.

They close at 6pm, not 8pm per their website in the summer. It's 6:20pm and I now need to find dinner elsewhere :-(

MSG!! Sodium Factory?...more like MSG factory. Very disappointed to find out ALL of there soups are "seasoned" with MSG. The owners should be ashamed considering there website claims to make children love vegetables. No kidding. Because there consuming neurotoxic, addictive, cancer fertilizer. Thanks for letting us know it's vegan, gluten free non-dairy. If you cared you would let us know your frying our brains. I'll take the gluten thank you very much.

Very bad customer service! There's no reason to have such bad attitudes..no one forced you to work at a soup place! So act like you want customers to spend their money!

As I'm finishing up my lunch from the New England Soup Factory, I was really curious to see what other yelpers had to say. Upon entering, as I've never been here before (and honestly just stumbled in looking for a place to get lunch) I took the time to look over the menu. Since there was no line, I didn't see why this was a problem, but I definitely felt the pressure to tell them what I wanted. I decided on a half veggie wrap and a small side salad of tomato + mozzarella. I was disappointed to realize the sandwich was already made, but, whatever. I was also surprised to see this ring up to over $8, considering the sandwich was a premade- half wrap with no meat, but again, whatever. Service was at New England standard (coming from a native Midwesterner, this is not a compliment). By the time I walked home with my food, I was pretty hungry and excited to eat. As far as the actual food: Pros: the wrap was easy to eat- sometimes they overflow and it gets a little messy. The tomato mozzarella side salad was also pretty good. They also thought to include a fork for the salad, which I appreciated. Cons: The wrap was bland. No flavor whatsoever, and I had to continuously check if I was eating the paper when I was eating the wrap itself, as it was so hard/dry/flavorless. Perhaps because it was so "light," I am not full and will probably eat again in an hour. Overall, I was not impressed with this place, but would probably give it another chance on a cooler, soup-appropriate day.

Pros: --closest eatery to my work --soups are hearty and warm --good variety of chips/cookies/soda and other lunch go-withs. Mmm snickerdoodle cookie!! --freshly made salads --the chicken pot pie soup comes with a flaky biscuit that is Mmm Mmm GOOD! Cons: --heavy on the salt. Coworkers have nicknamed it 'Sodium Factory' --sandwiches are pre-made so you cannot get them minus any particular ingredient/sauce --$6 limit to use your credit card (bowl of soup is usually around $5.50 so this limit ensure that you must buy soda/chips/etc) --their website isn't always updated with their soup(s) of the day. So I'll go wanting to get something that ends up not being available. Place gets busy during lunch and there isn't much seating. If you've got a larger group or want a quiet area, I'd recommend avoiding the lunch hour or heading somewhere else.

We actually found the "soup nazi"in Brookline. During our week stay visiting Boston, our only negative experience was here. Don't be fooled by the "family owned" aspect of this business. We tried several restaurants and enjoyed good food and pleasant dining experiences at other family owned restaurants....until we tried this place. Not only was the clam chowder exceeding salty, they do not make sandwiches to order. I tried to order a simple ham and cheese for my son (who doesn't like mustard) but the manager refused, claiming they were too busy. We were the only people in line. The owners should return to the basics....focus on making good food and hire workers who understand that customers should be their priority. If we could give less than one star, we would.

Picked up some chicken soup with noodles and the optional matzo balls. My husband and I both make chicken soup with matzo balls from scratch but he's been busy and I've been sick, so we opted for this as a substitute. And I just find the soup... strange. The broth tastes good and the way chicken broth should taste when made from scratch. I don't quite understand their choice of noodles-- the noodles are the same variety you'd find in a box of Lipton's instant soup, so they kind of cheapen the whole experience. The chunks of vegetable are enormous. But the real issue is the matzo ball. It is very very large -- so large that I had to cut it in half just to fit one into my large soup bowl. And when I cut it in half, I discovered unpleasantness #1: it is raw in the middle!! What is the point of having such large matzo balls when it sacrifices your ability to cook them properly?! Smaller, fully-cooked matzo balls would be far more impressive. A large undercooked matzo ball feels gimmicky and annoying. Unpleasantness #2: their matzo balls don't taste like anything. The texture on the outer layers is okay, but there's not schmaltz or matzo meal taste that I am accustomed to. After all the raves I've heard from various people about this place's matzo balls, I gotta say, it was completely unimpressive. I daresay they would have better results making them from the Manischewitz mix!! I guess it's too much to expect that matzo balls are made correctly en masse... the soups taste good, which is the most important thing. But for those of you who think this is as good as matzo balls can get, please find a Jewish mother, and invite yourself over to her house around the holidays. I can assure you, you'll have better matzo balls there than you did at NESF. I can make better ones in taste, texture, and that aren't raw, both when I make them from scratch and when I use a mix. Save your money on the optional matzo balls. 12/8/14 Edited to add: The owner sent me a private message saying my review was "mean" and she's a trained chef who has cooked for 30 years and knows what she is doing.... but she did not address my complaint about the matzo balls being raw. She then said that I "would not like it" if someone wrote about me "the way you wrote about my business." But isn't that telling -- she equates criticism of a business' product with criticism of the person who created the product. She also doesn't seem to know when to stop, because she has continued to write me messages even when I basically said, "please stop badgering me."

I have been coming here for YEARS and was so disappointed to recently learn that they use MSG in nearly all of their soups. I just wish I had known this earlier because I never would have eaten here. We are given the courtesy of being told if the soup is vegan, vegetarian, with alcohol.... seems there should be a "with msg" next to all these soups as well.

I have no idea how I have lived here for 2 years and have never tried this soup until last month. My mistake! It is located on the other side of the Brookline Village T tracks and I have been steps away for so long without knowing what I was missing out on. This place is delicious! The chicken matzoh ball soup tastes like my family's, the lobster bisque is soooo good and their seasonal soups (blueberry cardamom in the summertime is one of many delicious specialties, and butternut apple sage is one of of many featured now for fall) are great. Truly delicious, and dangerously close to where I live. The only reason for 4/5 stars is because I can't find the nutrition info anywhere. Maybe it's better that I don't know...

First off, I need everyone reading this to understand that I am an avid soup fan, and a former employee. I used to eat Marjorie's soups every day, and even now I am nowhere near sick of them. The owners of this restaurant are hardworking, kind hearted and genuine people. I worked for them for over a year, and in that short time I've seen them help out their employees in ways you'd never imagine possible. Now for the food. Every single scrap that leaves this place is home made from the location in Brookline. Soups, salad dressings, cookies, even the mustard that comes with their house baked pretzel sticks. Their team of hard working chef's come up with delicious creations every day. I am bothered to see that someone and their coworkers on here have referred to them as the "sodium factory." To this, I say that, they've had their soups tested for this, and their salt count is about 200 per cup, where other places such as Panera are about 500. Perhaps the soup factory's soup tastes slightly saltier, because there aren't any filler ingredients to hide the taste of the small amount of sodium. I've seen these soups made from scratch. I've seen the chicken stock on a low boil with just water and vegetables over night. There are so many loyal customers who will only eat their soups, because they know Marjorie and Paul, and they know that they will only produce the finest quality product for their beloved customers. Hopefully hearing my insight will change the minds of those who feel strongly opposing this wonderful soup restaurant. I know many people who travel from all over to stock up on these unique and flavorful soups. I've even met people who live across the country now, and will come home to visit family, and the soup factory is their first stop. No one will beat their chowder, newburg, or chicken vegetable (or any other soup creation for that matter)

I always say that the key ingredient in my cooking is passion. This is what I first noticed as I tasted their Split Pea with Spinach (Veg) was how amazing this soup tasted, and then it slowly dawned on me that I was tasting a true master piece, and the the symphony of flavors was from the love and passion poured into this dish. I could taste the care and affection with which it was cooked to perfection and I understand, I mean I see that someone else out there 'gets it' You can taste the love

I used to go to college in the area and lived off of this place for years. You can tell when food is made with love, and passion. The owners of this place surely have lots of it which made my tastebuds, and belly very happy. They have options for everyone; vegetarians, vegans, glutten free and even if you aren't a soup fan their cookies are to DIE for! I reccomend this place at anytime during the year as their salads and sandwhiches are very fresh and taste just as good as the soups. The space it's self is very cozy though, so beware during lunch time it becomes very cramped. Parking is also a pain in the ass (and expensive), so subway is the best way to get here (D line to Brookline Village). They also don't have a bathroom... which sucks, but there is not one very far away. I'd give my right arm to have a cup of their clam chowder on this cold January day.

Make a trip out to Brookline to try this place and have to say I was a bit disappointed. Granted I did come in the evening about an hour before closing but on the whole was underwhelmed. First off the staff was indifferent and uninterested in helping customers. Secondly prices are on the high side given the quality and portion size I was disappointed. Overall the place doesn't look particularly clean or well maintained and could use redecorating and new furniture. No American Express and non credit cards under $6? No thanks not again.

For a place that is called the SOUP FACTORY, I was not impressed. I'm a big fan of soups but my favorite in the world in Clam Chowder so naturally, when I went here, that's what I got. Their clam and corn chowder is an interesting mix and I kind of liked it however, there soup wasted overly salty and peppery. I wasn't a big fan. By the time I got to the bottom, it was hard to finish. I expected a higher quality NEW ENGLAND clam chowder from a place that calls itself the NEW ENGLAND Soup Factory. The 4 stars however, if for their salad. I got a soup and salad combo and I honestly wasn't expecting much from the salad because it was premade however, I had it for lunch the next day and it was fantastic. Super fresh even though it was a day old. Their homemade dressing was pretty freakin' good too. Really the salad is the only thing that keeps this place from getting 2 stars.

Used to eat here all the time when I lived in Boston. The "staple" soups (that are there every single day) are ok, but the specials are what I loved. If they have their split pea soup or the tomato butternut squash soup, haul over there as soon as possible. It's amazing something can taste so creamy with no cream! Both are outstanding. In addition to being a lover and not a hater, I am a baker and not a cook. Such is my love for these soups that I even bought the cook book, have made the tomato butternut squash soup multiple times and it ACTUALLY COMES OUT RIGHT. Unbelievable. I used to go and buy the chicken broth from the store whenever I'd make soup - really worth it.

I can't say that I love this place but they do have a good variety of soup. My favorite was Clam Chowder. They hardly serve that now. They've got the corn and clam chowder which I don't particular care for. One of my favorites is the Curry Crab though. That has got to be one of the best. Unfortunately, you really have to check their website to see when they got it next. It isn't a regular on their menu. The sandwiches and salads are a bit pricey and the portion size is small. I would give this place a 4 if the it isn't as pricey, or the portions are a bit bigger.

What can be better than soup on a New England frigid day? The chili was amazing. Never had avocados in my chili before but I must say it tasted delicious. It really balances out the kick of spice you get from the banana peppers. As much as I love avocado I'm kind of disappointed in myself for never thinking about putting it in my homemade chili. I love being able to merge together all the things I love like brownies and bacon. This is a must return spot for me. The sandwiches were good, I'm just not a fan of pre-prepared sandwiches.

I've had the Chicken Veg a few times and it's pretty good. It doesn't taste like classic chicken noodle, but still yummy. The bread is delicious.. I'm not sure I would eat the soup if I didn't have the bread to dip! I like the fact that they prepare their noodles separately so they don't get overcooked, cause that's just nasty. When you have a to go order they give you the option of having noodles in one container and the veggies/broth in the other. I would consider the soup I got to be more of a chicken noodle w carrots though because it seems like the only vegetable they put in are carrots!

Aah, I know I'm back in New England when I have a hearty cup of soup (Lobster Newburg, on this visit) on a chilly day. Little did I know that this outpost has been sitting down the street from my sister's apartment next to the Brookline Village T stop, and I didn't even know it! I like trying all the soup flavors, from classic to lesser known but just as delicious. Both locations have a limited amount of seating, so be prepared to take your soup to go.

omg, would you like some soup with your salt??? seriously, i love salt and salty food, so for me to be saying this says a lot. holy high blood pressure! if they cut the salt-content in half the soup would still be delicious and better for you! the soups are very tasty (soup is my favorite food, to be honest), but the place kinda puts itself out there as a healthy, nourish yourself, kinda gig. and they don't even offer sandwiches in wheat wraps! in fact, i'd say it's quite unhealthy to eat here. that said, i like it - a lot. i just wish they'd at least cut-down on the salt before my doc. puts me on hbp meds!

  • Dave D.

I tried the clam and corn chowder today with the chicken salad sandwich. The chowder was very tasty but a bit heavy on the pepper or something. The sandwich would have been better on a softer roll but was good. The selection is small and there isn't much room to sit so I probably won't return unless I have a clam and corn chowder craving.....

I could seriously live off of soup if they all tasted like this. Lobster Newburg and the Clam Chowder are AMAZING!!! I want some right now! There is no parking but it's usually easy to find a spot near the T or you can always pay at the garage near by.

Is it possible for soup to taste this good? The answer? YESSSS!!! Absolutely yes!!! Best soup I have ever had. There are a wide range of flavors, and the option of either warm or cold soup (something that is interesting and unique if you have never had it before, but also cool and refreshing in the summer months) It is totally worth the price. I even bought the New England Soup Factory cookbook that way I can enjoy the joys of cooking their wonderful soup from the comfort of my own home. If only more restaurants had such an option (Triumphe, Tasty Burger, Laduree, Wa, I'm talking to all of you!!)

New England Soup Factory has absolutely no business being out in the middle of nowhere Brookline. It needs to re-locate--or open up a new location--right next to my apt in Central Sq. Now. Soup is my absolute favorite food in the whole wide world. I will eat it anytime, anywhere. If I were in a restaurant right next to lava on top of a volcano and it was 150 degrees and they asked me what I wanted, I would say soup. My last meal on earth will be soup. I'm pretty sure my first meal on this earth was soup. No milk in THAT bottle, no siree. Get: Italian beef stew, spicy tomato rice and lobster newburg. Hot, rich, decadent and healthy (I tell myself repeatedly). The boyfriend loved the Boston/Yankee chowder (corn + clams), and it was good but corn chowder's never been my favorite type of soup. The Italian beef was succulent. Seductive. They should serve this as dessert, it's that mouthwatering. And I almost spilled spicy tomato rice all over myself from trying to inhale it. Must come up with more reasons/excuses to go to Brookline Village and stop here for lunch.

Just discovered this place, but it seems I'm late to the party because the line at 12:30 was literally out the door (it moves quickly though). It's well-hidden back by the Brookline Village T and it looks like most everything around it is permanently closed. This made me wary as I was approaching but it seems to be the lone success in the area with good reason. The soup was good! I had corn/clam chowder and a caesar salad. The chowder was pretty good, though a little light on the clam/corn aspect and a little heavy on the salt and potato. The roll that came with it was soft and went wonderfully with the soup - I was wishing they had given me 2 or 3. Salad used good leafy greens, not just romaine, and had tasty dressing. I'll definitely be back.

Thankyou Soup Factory! Whatever seasonal cold or bacteria was brewing in me, or even thinking about it, has been decimated by the Soup Factory's Thai Butternut. Just one of many super hot, as in habanero hot, soups that cleanses the system. It is so appreciated for those of us who enjoy a little spice in the life to have a soup that can make your eyes water, nose run, lips burn, and send a fire down your throat all at once. Beautiful! My lips are still burning. Thanks again!

There's something about hot soup on a rainy day that always hits the spot and the happy feeling following my bowl of chili, clam chowder and the slighty less amazing lobster bisque may have resulted from this very phenomenon or it may have resulted from the fact this place serves some great soup. I may never know the real reason because I am only a visitor from California but I will give NESF the benefit of the doubt. The Clam Chowder has corn in it, which is a welcome surprise. It was a little salty for my tastes but the fact that they give you two multi-grain or french rolls with every pint of soup helps to alleviate this saltiness. The Chili is spicier than I would have thought. It's not bad, but I would have preferred a blander chili. There's a great mix of beef, beans, and veggies and it tasted even better microwaved the next day. The lobster bisque was my least favorite but it's still a good soup. There is an upcharge for the lobster and there weren't very many pieces. I would have paid even more to have more lobster but sadly this wasn't an option. Good soup, fast service, and reasonably priced. Come here on a rainy or cold day but it's not good enough for warm-season dining.

Okay, I believe I've now eaten here enough that it warrants a 5 star review. They have some really delicious varieties of soup. I especially like their vegetarian options. The only soup I don't like to much is the chicken pot pie. It is a little thick for my taste. They also have delicious sides including wonderful interpretations of chicken salad. It's pretty small inside, so I've always taken my food to go. It's ridiculously close to the Brookline Village T and there is also a parking lot out front.

I never thought I would like a clam chowder at a Place that was not a specialty seafood store but this place has it down,. Their clam chowder is just the right consistency and thickness. Not fishy but tender clams that have a slight sweet flavor. It is not super heavy so you do not feel really full or bloated after eating it. I took some home and it was just as good the next day. I haven't tried any of the other soups here yet but judging by how they looked I would say they looked really good.

Let it just be known that it takes a lot for me to give a place a five star review. This place certainly deserves it. I went here for the first time today, and I'm trying to make up excuses to get back into Brookline Village so I can go again. First off, they let you sample any soup you want before you buy a bowl. Awesome. I got the Newburg Lobster Bisque with half of a grilled chicken avocado wrap. I didn't even make it to the wrap. The bisque was so filling and delicious. The French bread they gave me was yummy too. Basically, I got half a wrap, a water bottle, and the greatest lobster bisque I've ever had in my life for nine dollars. I used to be one of those people who thought Panera Bread is tasty. I had flashbacks while I was eating my soup here and realized how wrong I was. You can really tell the difference between their fresh, homemade stews and the crap soups restaurants get out of a bag. It's like night and day. What really makes it a no-brainer is that the prices are comparable. I would even say this place is cheaper for 10,000 times the quality.

I grew up going to the one in Newton, and I enjoyed my recent experience in Brookline as well. I just checked out Marjorie Drucker on How2Heroes, and it was interesting to see that she uses bouillon in her soup! I thought it might be too salty, but it was delicious. I had the matzo ball soup without noodles - which is totally worth the short wait. The matzo ball takes up the entire soup, soaking up the salty oily goodness -- and I love how she uses fresh carrots that aren't baby-sized for the soup. On the side, I chose the multi-grain roll (I wish they'd serve breadsticks) and tried a scrumptious gooey undercooked blond brownie - that was just the thing to go along with this lunch-time splurge. On a chilly Fall day, it was just the remedy. I whole-heartedly recommend this place to anyone who can stop by (it's busy, so limited seating) and warm up.

Best place to go on a cold day. When it was really snowy out, my co-workers and I would still trek over to the Soup Factory. One thing I love and appreciate about this place is there is always a vegan soup option. For the Holidays, our boss gave us gift cards to NESF and we used the entire amount on the card within a month. If you crave this soup without leaving your home, there is a recipe book available too!

waaaaaaaaaaa?! ive never yelped the NESF? WTF? ok, well 4 solid stars, but you want to know a secret? they printed a cookbook ayear ago, pay the cash, get the book and never spend 9 bucks on lunch again (yea suk it) their secret? balsamic vinegar, seriously, its in almost all of their soups, they are good, but pricey. i would eat here all the time when i worked for the man, now i got the book so i can make (ok, wifey makes it) sweet potato chicken barley at home. i get the ingredients from russos so all that cash can be used to...ok i crap it all away anyways.

My new obsession! So many awesome choices of soups, salads and sandwiches including vegetarian and vegan options. I got the black bean gazpacho, super spicy and satisfying! The staff was really friendly and helpful and it had a fun atmosphere. I'll definitely be there often!

I used to love coming to this place as a kid; having moved to Somerville over a year ago after living out on the West Coast for awhile, I haven't been back to the Soup Factory in a long, long time. A visit was much overdue, and when a doc appointment gave me an excuse to be out Brookline way, I jumped at the opportunity to pick up lunch from a long-time love. I was a bit overwhelmed by all their options, but decided to go with a tried and true combo: chicken vegetable soup with a matzoh ball instead of noodles. I had a small veggie wrap sandwich as well, which was a good balance with the hearty soup. First off, the matzoh ball was about the size of my fist, requiring a bigger and heavy-duty plastic container, which I appreciated. The broth was a bit salty, but it was full of good chicken and veggie flavor. I wish there had been more chicken pieces, but maybe the matzoh ball displaced 'em all. Still, it was so warm and flavorful and delicious, I wish they would open one up north of the river.

I love that you can try the soup before you commit to a bowl. They had a great selection of soups, I went with the Habanero Chicken Rice, had a bit of kick and was very good. My friend had the Lobster Newburg and it was very good. Soups come with your choice of a multi-grain or French roll. The sandwich selection looked very good. They also have a 1/2 soup / sandwich deal so you can get the best of both worlds. The soup was the way soup should be served- hot! Line moved quickly. Small dining room that has plenty of windows to sit by and people watch. This little restaurant is literally right there @ the Green Line- Brookline Village Station, so convenient.

This place is amazing, amazing, amazing! I have lived in Brookline for two years and I can't believe I haven't gotten here sooner. The staff is friendly, the soup is amazing and is the perfect cure for the winter blues. Everyone should go here! Update, I have now been here four more times and each is better than the last. I have tried to baked potato and chive, chili, pasta fagioli, and a delicious mushroom bisque. Update again, the torrtilla lime w/ Green Chilies is out of this world and amazing. I have been going every Monday to the Newton location because it is close to where I work and I am always impressed!

Huge variety of soups that change over everyday. Sometimes they go a bit salty, but it's a major Brookline Village staple come the Fall and Winter.

Super fantastic selection of warming culinary pleasures. I had lobster soup, which was tomato-based, creamy soup with chunks of yummy lobster. You can't go wrong on a cold day. Had an M&M cookie, too, which was pretty good, but just a cookie. Right next to Brookline Village T, tucked in off Brookline Place.

Being from CA...I've been so waiting to have good Boston Clam Chowder! Well, this place was great!!! I loved it. It was thick, creamy, hot, and so tasty!! The sourdough rolls were great as well. My daughter had the Chili and that was very tasty and spicy as well! The best part was that it was right off the T!! My only complaint is...why was the African-American kid the only one required to wear a hairnet, when all the young men there had longer hair too? Just an observation...

Good product + friendly staff = my being a fan They have a great variety of soups as well as assorted salads, etc. One of the "etc." that I find particularly whimsical is a container of marinated beets. I didn't think that beets would go well with chili, so I'll be back to grab them another time. :)

So - you go to a soup Restaurant to buy soup. Is it unreasonable to expect that the staff are pleasant, the food tastes good and is healthy, and the prices are reasonable? This place Does not achieve these simple requirements - soups have a very high level of salt. Of the three sampled all were excessively salted - the staff are officious, surly, innatentive or just plain rude - this on a sample of three visits with three different staff - the prices are high for small portions - the smallest soup one cup is 5.08 with tax. For a product that is 95% hot water this is frankly excessive. The staff try and upsell and seem genuinely nervous Is the owner a greedy person? I get the sense that this is the case Do your self esteem and your wallet a favor Avoid

I love this place. I always go here on a chilly day and eat their vegetarian soup, with a roll, and then finish it off with one of those jumbo brown sugar chocolate chip cookies. I have had a few experiences where the soup that I got was extremely spicy however. Even if you like spicy food it can be overpowering.. just ask for a sample if its a spicy soup to see if you can handle it before ordering a whole container. Also, I have to point out that they don't have any noticeable recycling, which really bothers me. They also use Styrofoam plates. Yuk. Hello, where are you guys? It's 2010, get on the green wagon.

Love, Love, Love... The best soup in the city by a mile. Never had a bad experience here from the tasty soups to the super friendly staff. My only complaint is that there are not more packaged options to take home otherwise I could easily buy my lunch for the week from their refrigerated soups.

Sniffles? Sleepy? Need a comforting lunch amidst the drab confines of Brookline Village? Soup is always the answer. I'm partial to their spicy chicken "flu buster," myself, with a multigrain roll on the side so I can sop up the broth. Mmm. So the soup's pretty good, though a tad salty. That's okay. NESF's true secret weapon is their sweet potato salad. Holy cow. Go get some with your next cup of soup. I know I will.

LOVE THIS PLACE! It's right across the street from work - perfect for a cold miserable day like the one I'm currently enduring. The soups are inventive and delicious, and the cookies are out-of-this world good. Chicken Soup - YUM Beef Chili - YUM Lemony Lentil - YUM Tomato Cheddar - YUM ... And so forth and so on. My one comment is that the soups can tend to be a little on the salty side. Sometimes, my eyeballs itch from dehydration. Have a big glass of water handy, then dive in!

As my friends, and they will tell you I am hooked on this place. Yummy, homemade soups that fill you up without breaking the bank. Its hard to walk by this place without being drawn in by the delicious scents surrounding the building. The staff is super friendly, and they let you try samples before picking which one (can be a really tough choice!). You really can't go wrong.

I'm no soup connoisseur, but I've sampled quite a variety before. I just really love hot soup ... I can even drink it during the summer (crazy, I know). So far, I've tried: - Chicken paella soup ... too much msg for me - Sausage minestrone ... filling and meaty - Habanero chile pepper soup ... obviously very spicy, but it was so delicious. A party in your mouth!! Yay for side french rolls, daily soups announcement online, and free sampling. NESF gets 5 stars for variety, 3.5 for quality.

I LOOOOOOVE the Soup Factory. Their chicken noodle is so amazing on a cold day, or when you're sick. I live in Providence now, but my boyfriend still works in Boston and sometimes when I feel sick I make him stop by on his way home. Also, once they had Cheddar Broccoli and it was like that episode of Family Guy where it took the role as "the soup that got away". I was sick, so I got the chicken noodle, thinking I could come back another day and try the Cheddar Broccoli. Well, to this day I have never seen it again.. so sad. Expect to spend about $10 for lunch like you would anywhere else in Boston, you'll be full when you're done and so, so satisfied. This particular location has a good amount of seating. Window seats are good for watching the T in case you need to be somewhere soon. There are always newspapers strewn about by other patrons so you always have something to read. One thing I'd change is to offer butter with their rolls. I know they're for dipping, but damn dawg.

I absolutely adore their soups. It's also quite helpful they've got sandwiches to round out a great meal. I've also been quite tempted, but have never bought their pre-made sauces and soups to take home. They're normally stored in that fridge in the front. They also have great rolls and the area is a bit on the smaller side so I'm a big fan of taking it home and curling up to a nice, warm bowl of soup. Mmm... I just have one bad memory from here and it's totally not their fault at all. A couple winters ago, though, my friend was super sick and so to surprise him, I trekked through the snow and freezing cold weathers to come here and get him a pint of chicken noodle soup and a sandwich. I got a nice hearty sandwich and instead of chicken noodle specifically, I got him a chicken and vegetable soup. I even bought extra rolls for him! Excitedly, I hopped onto the T and rushed over to his home with the package in my grubby little hands. He angrily asked me why I was there and tore into the bag when I explained and handed it to him. He grunted, grumbling about why I didn't get him any tomato soup instead. Psh. So forget being nice. More soup for me. Jerk.

I love love love New England Soup Factory! I am a HUGE soup fan, could eat it for lunch & dinner every day - and this is by far the best I've had in the city. There's always a huge selection filled with delicious choices. You can sample the soups to find exactly what you're in the mood for. The sandwiches, side salads, and pastas are also delicious and can be the perfect addition to the soup for a satisfying meal. I've never had a bad soup, and I've been a loyal customer for 5+ years. YUM!

The Soup Factory (excuse the cliché) just keeps on getting better with each passing week. I have never been disappointed in their soups, sandwiches or even their homemade snacks (cookies, brownies, and fruit bars). Their soup menu has something for everyone - classic soups like Chicken Vegetable (try it with matzo instead of noodles), New England Clam Chowder, Chili Con Carne, Beef Stew, and Chicken Pot Pie. They also have a great selection of seasonal soups if you like to be a little adventurous with your selection. This summer, their cold soups have been stellar . One week, they offered an iced banana curry soup which was the greatest combination of flavors that I had ever experienced in a soup. This is one cold soup that I wish they would add to their regular menu! Give the Soup Factory a try - I guarantee that you won't be disappointed.

My real NESF review is for their Newton location. This one has the same food, which is friggin outstanding. Low fat? Not quite. But hearty and delicious? Fuck yes. Anyway, this location is nowhere near as good as the Newton one, but I still have to give it 4 stars for the food. The service experience is a crap shoot here. I usually get a weird older guy who looks at me like he's a pedophile and I'm a 12 year old boy. He badgers me to decide, even when there's no line and I just do not appreciate that, nor his tone. A few times I got a teenage girl, who was much better and did not antagonize me. Also, parking at this location is an enormous bitch. But damn those FWC soups are good.

Yum! Just tried the Clam and Corn Chowder from this place. Husband and I finished a quart between us, along with the three homemade rolls that came with. Really good: creamy, but not gelatinous; lots of stuff in it - clams, corn, potatoes, etc; hint of spiciness. Looking forward to trying some other soups. It's like the Soup Nazi minus the Nazi and hole-in-the-wall atmosphere!

Customer service is decent. The bread and sandwiches are tasty as long as they are fresh. I work in the area and have been here many times for lunch. Once and awhile you can get some creepy looking avocado or lettuce in your sandwich. As for the soup, they basically all taste the same considering the absurd amount of salt they include in their recipes. You actually feel dehydrated immediately after finishing the bowl.

Lets start 2009 off with a BANG. New England Soup Factory! BANG! History: Marjorie Druker and Paul Brophy opened the NESF in 1995 in Brookline. Their mission is to "take old, good ideas and fashion them to these times. The key is to create comfort food that is good for you." Menu: They have 7 or so soups that they offer daily. They are, but not limited to: Chicken Vegetable, Chili Con Carne, Clam Chowder, Corn Chowder, Lobster Newburg, Beef Stew and Chicken Pot Pie. They also have different new concoctions every day, I recently had: Tomato Crab Bisque and a Corn Chowder with Roasted Red Peppers that was amazing. Soup Prices: A 12oz bowl with 1 roll is $4.75. A 16oz pint with 2 rolls is $5.95. And, a 32oz Quart with 3 rolls is $10.50. My Favorite: They also have homemade baked goods, salads, sandwiches - I like the Hamlet ($3.99) with Black Forrest ham on crusty bread with greens, cheddar cheese and honey apricot mustard. Slow food, real food, local food, good food. BANG!

One of my client's office is located across the street from this place so whenever I am working there I have to stop at the New England Soup Factory! Luckily I tend to work in that area in the fall/winter months so soup is perfect when it is freezing out. I really wouldn't consider myself a soup person but I always crave their soup specifically their chili. I am pretty picky when it comes to chili because I do not like it sweet and I usually prefer for it to be on the spicier side. Their chili is defiantly spicy so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't enjoy jalapenos. It is very hearty and will fill you up. I always take my soup to go because there is limited seating and it is usually busy. You have the option of trying every soup before you decide on one and it comes with either a regular or multi-grain roll. I have also tried their sandwiches which are more on the gourmet side than what you would probably expect. The chicken salad and tuna are both good but I wouldn't go back for either of them. But it is a nice option if you want something more than just soup.

I dig this place. Awesome soup...all sorts of different varieties. Its location is kind of tough to find, but it's cake if you're coming off the Brookline Village T-stop. NESF gets PACKED around dinner time! Be prepared for that. The place absolutely needs a facelift, though. It's sort of weird/old/falling apart/living in the past. The bread that comes with the soup is kind of funky but man it's good about 3 bites into it...

$7.00 for a takeout salad and they don't even cut the lettuce into bite size pieces. I was literally forking up entire large lettuce leaves in my mouth uncut. I had already poured my dressing not expecting to have to cut lettuce and it splattered oil and vinaigrette everywhere. I was very disappointed, pressed for time, and won't be doing that again.

Ok, I did not like soup before this restaurant. Now I can't live without it. I don't eat poultry, pork or beef, so my options can be limited. What I love is that they are soo veggie friendly. They always tell you what stock is being used and whether or not it's finished with cream. But besides that... the food itself is amazing. I hate lentil soup... i love their lentil soup. I am not a fan of chickpeas... their butternut chickpea soup is fantastic. Their creativity is great. You can also buy frozen soups to stock up on. Brilliant. Oh, and don't forget the sides! The sweet potato salad they have in the fall is to die for. And I just tried their cranberry bar. It went down a little too easily. I cannot recommend this place highly enough... now if I can just make one of their soups from the cookbook I'll be all set!

I stopped here once when I was craving soup. I got the vegan alphabet vegetable soup and it was fresh and delicious! It's just a small place with a few little tables- good for grabbing something quick, and perfect for take out!

  • Doris K.

Good homemade soups. You're able to try a couple of soups before you actually decide. I had the chili con carne which was meaty and spicy. I just wish that it would have been served with the option of cornbread versus just a choice of white or wheat. Friends of mine had the artichoke risotto soup - also really tasty! The lobster newburg could have used some chunks of lobster, and the Dijon chicken soup had an overpowering taste of Dijon. Overall not a bad choice on a cold winter day.

  • Julie S.

I come here when I have a cold, I come here when I need comfort food, I come here when I'm chilly and just need to warm up a little bit. The New England Soup Factory is my go-to place to making me feel better, no matter what the problem. My favorite soup is the chicken noodle. The matzoh balls are perfectly dense and NY deli delicious. The rolls are always fresh and fluffy with a crispy crust. They also sell cans of ginger ale, the perfect pairing when you're feeling under the weather. Soups can be over-salted, but it's a small transgression when balanced with their overall tastiness.

  • Michelle J.

I have to physically restrain myself from getting lunch here every day. This place knows their soup, and they know how to capitalize on the lunchtime crowd. You are in and out in 5 minutes, and while obviously the soup is the star attraction, they also offer a variety of interesting wraps, sandwiches, and snacky-type foods to satisfy any kind of mid-day craving. My go-to is the 1/2 soup 1/2 sandwich combo. You can try any of the soups at the counter before ordering, which ensures you chose something you actually like. i like that they offer some of the popular options every day while changing up the other menu items. Every soup I've tried so far has been delicious. I recommend that you try one of their chilled soups on a hot day--some people assume it would be gross but theirs are refreshing and delicious. The flavors can be a tad on the salty side, so if you don't like salt you may want to try before you buy. Lucky for me, I love salt. Each soup comes with a hot fresh roll. To-go orders come in cute plastic containers that can be re-used at home. I subtract one star only because the food seems a tad bit on the expensive side ($10 for a soup and half sandwich, more with a drink).

So my Coworkers love their soup... I have only tried the Clam Chowder and it is painfully Salty... However the taste is ok (meaning I was able to dunk the bread and eat half the cup this way) I like that it has good size pieces of potatoes and lots of corn, but I seriously think they added extra salt by mistake or something because I don't think anyone would add that much salt to anything intentionally! I would try them again in order to discard a possible error on the salt amount. I would also like to try something different... In the meantime I would have to give them a 2 1/2... hopefully my next experience forces me to give them a better rating!

If you love soup, you will LOVE this place. It is a soup-lover's heaven. They also have yummy salt and pepper pita chips, fresh/delicious/cheap caesar salad. I've only tried a few of their soups, but it's just the beginning : ) So far lobster newburg, sweet potato bisque, and sweet potato coconut. I only wish they were open in the mornings so I could grab one to go for lunch everyday! I bet they make a mean veggie chili, lentil or split pea.. In which case, I would definitely buy them out. GO!

  • Darren G.

Went here recently and thought it was a good but mediocre experience. They had a great variety of soup and my vegetable barley was tasty (oddly thick though.) But really I don't think they did much to deserve much higher of a rating. Decor needs a lot of work, as well as the attitudes of the employees. Some of the saddest looking and sounding people I've ever had serve me. Not bad people but wow they gave off this attitude of depression. Got one of their sandwiches to go with my soup and I was unimpressed with it: hard bread and a pound of pesto.

Forget Opening Day at Fenway: the true harbinger of spring comes in early May when NESF puts their chilled tomato gazpacho back on the menu. This stuff is so delicious and healthy, I would bathe in it. And I love the French rolls, even if they're not as delicious as the ones at the Bertucci's downstairs. (BTW, NESF's wheat ones are really blah) Oh, yeah, the side dishes, sandwiches, cookies and brownies are all yummy too. A great new addition to the menu: strawberries romanoff (sour cream, rum & vanilla sauce). Eat your fruit and be virtuous. Hic.

This place is decent for lunch. And despite the name, it's not just soup. Also sesame noodles, baked goods, wraps, etc. I work for a food magazine right across the street, and I don't usually have to go out to get lunch. When that happens, though, sometimes I'll go here. The soup is generally pretty tasty, but I've noticed a film under the lid of my soup and even in it--it can be kind of oily/greasy. I do like that they list if a soup is vegetarian (even though I'm not one), and that the offerings change daily. Considering it's soup made en masse, it's good. And there aren't a whole lot of quick takeout options in Brookline Village.

On a cold, blustery day, this place hit the spot for lunch. I'd been meaning to make my way to Brookline Village to try this place for a while, but finally had an excuse to when Susie A. was dogsitting nearby. We checked out the offerings of their soups online (updated daily) and headed over the New England Soup Factory. We both got the Syrian Chickpea with Tahini, served with a wheat bread roll, as well as a sweet potato salad. The soup was awesome. Who knew soup could be so tasty? I always think soup is boring. THis soup was GREAT. Chicken stock based, with tahini, full chickpeas, and a slightly tangy flavor (lemon). The bread was good, not amazing. I really liked the sweet potato salad- roasted sweet potatoes with some herbs, onions, etc. Why not five stars? Because the place was a chaotic, cramped zoo. Yes, it was lunch time, but there wasn't much order to the line, huge potential for mess-up, and the seating area was totally cramped. I'd rather there be less seats and more room than an area to just barely sit. I look forward to going back and reporting on more of their offerings.

I've noticed some super ideas for restaurants since we've moved to New England, and now we've visited a SOUPer restaurant in New England. We took a few of these home to heat up, and now that we're all done we can't wait to go back for more. The Tomato Crab Bisque was worth the price, and every bit as good as I hoped it would be. The wife loved her tomato butternut so much I had to fight her to get a taste! We also brought home some beef vegetable and a split pea with spinach soup too and they were just delicious. I love this place, the soup and New England in general.

This place is sensational...I agree...move over great grandma. These soups are just heavenly tasting and so delicious. Sample one before you buy - preventing you from any sense of regret. The basic chicken and vegetables is so wonderful. Also, a nice selection of salads and sandwiches allows you to complement your soup. I would suggest getting two small soups rather than a soup + sandwhich. Cookies are also perfectly chewy and tasty. Service is unbelievably nice - they really do want you to have a good time and be comfortable while you enjoy their soups. This is really a testament to the nay-sayers who believe Bostonian aren't nice. Sidebar: there's a really cute guy there with a Sox cap who is definitely easy on the eyes. Bottom line, don't dilly-dally another minute. Lunchtime is the best time to go, or a little after then. Note that parking is a little weird. There's a garage across from the T-stop (Brookline Village). Rainy days and soup make the best combination.

I remember 10 years ago when my then girlfriend lived in The BrookHouse...We discovered The New England Soup Factory. It changed my soup eating latitude perhaps forever..... Now my grandmother is in the Hall of Fame for chicken noodle soup(secret ingredient Cinnamon), but this place is darn close... Hey, and after 10 years they still give you free bread...Ladies and gentlemen, may I present the best place for soup in Boston and local suburbs

I love soup! I had to go for an appointment next door, and for lunch I stopped in to the New England Soup Factory, because you Yelpers had given it such good reviews! I needed a good soup, because I had just gotten a shot, and needed a morale boost! I ordered the Vegan soup and wrap combo, which was surprisingly really good! I am vegetarian, but I find vegan food to usually not be to my liking, but this was delicious. The interior could do with a little sprucing up. The table I sat at was very wobbly and I ending up knocking over my drink. :( Very good food, but my tab came out to being $11 dollars for a small soup, half a wrap, and a can of coke, which I thought was a little over priced.

Excellent in general, excellent for catering. Paul is upbeat and professional, and he has been incredibly accommodating of our business' needs! I was charged with ordering large, DAILY lunches (and even though they're free, it's hard to keep employees excited about the food). The service, presentation and sheer awesomeness of the product (personal favorite: any pureed vegetarian soup with cream or coconut milk). The Soup Factory has quickly become one of the favorite vendors with the staff!

I am lazy and cheap. I am too lazy to bring lunch and too cheap eat out all the time. The combination isn't good because when I get out of work at nine o'clock at night I'm a ravenous pig, and a pretty unhappy girl with extremely low blood sugar. Fortunately for me I now work in the neighborhood of the soup factory. With a great selection of soups, salads and pre-made sandwiches. They always have a vegetarian (if not vegan) soup available and yummy tomato basil and mozzarella sandwiches. It was definitely designed with the working person in mind. Affordable enough so that I don't feel guilty even when I show up EVERY day of the week and yummy enough to make any lazy person want to get off of their but and take a stroll down to Brookline Village to get a little Soup Factory in 'em

Best soup I've ever had. Wish they were open a little later on evenings and weekends. Seems like every time I show up, they're closed.

The beef barley stew? Sublime. The pumpkin crab bisque? Exquisite. The eggplant parmesan soup? Heavenly. I was all set to give the NESF four stars but then I had the chicken vegetable. And...ick. Carrots were the only vegetable, boring little noodles and the soup itself was rather insipid. If it's going to be one of your constant, flagship soups, then it had better be delicious. And this was most definitely not. And then, the matzo ball...the horror, the horror! Ever been to a state fair? Ever been in the cow barn? If you turned that smell into a taste, mixed it with some eggs and boiled it, you would have a Soup Factory matzo ball. To add injury to insult, the one bite I ate contained eggshells. And...we're done. Chicken soup disasters aside, this place is still pretty awesome. The pasta salad and the cookies are very delicious. You can (and should) try the soups before you decide on one, and the staff is super-friendly. If you ask for a specific soup, they will often put it on the menu the next day!

One of my favorite places in Boston. The BEST homemade soups even better than mom made, and there are so many to choose from! Around 10 different soups a day (4 staples and the rest change regularly) that you can sample before making your choice plus fresh baked rolls (white or wheat), cookies, brownies, salads and sandwiches. The chicken vegetable is perfect and if you want noodles or matzot balls they'll add them to order so they stay firm. Feeling spicy? The chili con carne is the perfect thing for a cold day. I could go on and describe all of my favorite soups here, but it would take pages. Believe me, variety + quality = a happy tummy every time. You can get your soup to go and be in and out in less than 5 or sit and enjoy it there. There isn't much seating but most choose to take it to go. Marjorie has a great thing going here. Check it out!

This place is phenomenal. I unexpectedly found myself outside of the NE Soup company, so I had to walk in. You would think that since it was 80 degrees I'd stay away from the chicken soup. NO, that soup is good year round no matter the weather. It is hearty and the veggies are fully in tact. Noodles are perfect and not soggy. It's full of flavor. I was really impressed with the combination deal. I got a bowl of soup and a mini (pretty decent sized) sandwich for $8.51 including tax. Since I was in a rush, I didn't try anything. However, I noticed that people behind the counter were offering samples before taking orders.

Mmmm Good...move over Grandma, this place is better! New England Soup Factory has two locations; Brookline and Newton. I usually go to the one in newton. This a great place even in the summer time! The pint is a perfect size and depending on what type of soup, you have some leftovers! They also have grab n go's - salads, crudite cups, frozen soups and size of your face cookies. They have also simple sandwiches. One final note, try the: Chicken pot, chicken pot, chicken - pot - pie!

Is it wrong to give a restaurant 5 stars even when you've never been there in person before?? Typically I'd give that question an adamant yes answer, but the trick around this one is that the owner of this restaurant published a recipe book of all (or at least most) of her soup recipes so everyone can enjoy them from their own home. I've made about 10 different soups and every one of them is probably the best soup I've ever had. The soups have essentially become a weekly staple in my house every fall and winter. Someday I hope to make it down to the Soup Factory just to see where this all began and to thank the owner for making my belly so happy! Maybe then I could up my rating to 6 stars!

Ooooh, how I miss New England Soup Factory! I was a loyal patron, getting the Lobster Newburg just about every time, when I went to school in Brookline. Heaven in a little purple bowl, with two little crusty rolls to dip in it. It was always a filling, delicious lunch or dinner -- a rich soup with delicious chunks of lobster meat. Now that I think about it, I will definitely have to make a trip up to Brookline this winter from some nostalgic lobstery goodness!

Sorry to end the love fest, but I dropped in to the Newton one on a lark knowing nothing about this place, and had a pint of really bad soup. So I came to write a review to warn people and was quite surprised to see all these amazing reviews. The soup tasted so mass manufactured it might as well have come out of a can. Even Progresso makes a better can of soup than what I was served. I got Wild Mushroom with Barley. After three spoonfuls, I was ready to ask for my money back. Being a lady, I just dumped it out, politely cleaned up my area and left. My friend who came with me tried a few spoonfuls and also being polite, just put her spoon down and talked about anything but the soup. But without asking, I think I know their reaction. Because there are so many good reviews here, I will have to give it another shot. But really, I was so underwhelmed by the soup I could see why the last time they won Best of Boston (proudly displayed in the restaurant) was 1999.

It's mid-May and thanks to the wonders of Boston weather, today is a soup day. Why I moved to this city is a question that sometime pops into my head on these confusing days - but that's for a different entry. It's been a long time since I hit NESF, so I took the extra bit of time to head over their way to give me the better alternative to my normal soup stop (Whole Foods). Prescription for warming my core: Chicken Vegetable soup and a small sandwich on crusty rustic bread. The sandwich was damn tasty - nice balance of flavors and ingredients without going over the top. also a perfect size to pair with a bowl of soup. But I give this place 3 stars on this experience because the Chicken and Vegetable soup should have mentioned that Vegetable was not a plural word. There was chicken and carrots, and that's it. and the chicken..... a bit too dry for hanging out in,,,,,um,,,,,,liquid all day. the flavor too wasn't terribly inspiring. But it was warm, and fit that need today. But really, if you are basing your business, name, and reputation, you need to wow a bit more. And if your chicken vegetable doesn't cut it.....

I go here often and every kind of soup I've ordered is always delicious. So the food in general really good. I like that you can sample a flavor before committing to a bowl of it. I dislike the lack of organization on ordering and paying and also the cramped space which adds to the disorginazation. Sometimes the staff is grumpy but there is also some really friendly ones so it's or miss with them. Their biggest concern should be to obtain a larger space.

i've been dreaming of the thai butternut soup ever since my valentine's day lunch date to the soup factory. the roll that accompanied it was almost as good. my bf devoured his entire pint of chili, so i'll go out on a limb here and guess that he was equally pleased. also, the location is really convenient (right across from the brookline village green line t stop) and surrounded by plenty of (metered) parking. wish list: -better seating? some of the chair / table match ups left even my 6'2 boyfriend wishing for an extra few inches -un-pre-made sandwiches? my chicken salad sandwich was delicious, but still 4 stars for the soup factory, 5 stars for the soups!

Great soup, very creative ideas!!! Good choice for vegetarians (there are always at least two options), good choice for low calories (NC on the menu = No Cream), great clam chowder. I love them all year long, always like to try a new soup, but I think fall is their peak :) The price of soup and a roll, which is a great, satisfying lunch is really reasonable.

Love this place. If you are looking for quality ingredients and great flavor...look no further. They have an amazing soup selection. Every day they feature about 5 special soups outside of their traditional offerings ie, Chowder, Chicken noodle soup, chili, etc. Their special soups can range any where from creative gazpacho's to spicy lentils. They list the soup specials on their website daily so it's always good to check it out before you head over. My favorite soup is the Chicken Pot Pie. It's absolutely delicious! Their sandwiches are also pretty good but usually rather dry. They also have daily salad specials ranging from Curry Chicken Salad with Raisins to Fresh Beet salad. Check it out for lunch!

LOVE all the options here. Great salads, sandwiches, and soups of course! 12noon the place is packed, so go before or a bit after. The line always moves quickly though there are only two registers--that is where most of the wait is. Friendly/helpful staff, very clear veg options. The cookies are delicious as well. NOTE they have a $10 cc minimum (illegal) which they are very strict about.

How sad am I? I drove from Belmont to try your delicious Curry Carrot Soup, and you weren't there! I walked and walked, and then painfully stepped into Bertuccis for their minestrone. Boy, was I sorry. Even worse, when I went back to look you up, I realized I had written "Ave" not "Pl" on the directions.

Love it! It's cheap, tasty and a good variety of items. I've become addicted to the curried carrot with apple and honey soup and their sandwiched are awesome! I love it so much I may need to get the cook book! Reminds me of great soup I have in NYC!

Just what the doctor ordered! This place has great chicken soup, great for fighting off a cold. That's not all, they have a wide variety of soups, something you'd expect from the "soup factory". What surprises me is that all soups are good--I've never been disappointing with one, and I've been there a few times.

I got there at 3.00pm and they are open till 5.00. Now the place was locked with a sign outside tht said they closed early tht day because the weather is good. Way to be professional and commited.

I love their soup!! The butternut squash and the matzo ball soup are my favorites. And the bread bowl or side of bread that comes with it is always super soft. It's a little bit of homemade without having to slave over a stove. You can even buy frozen pints for later, which are a great value.

I love this place so much I want to marry it and have its little soup babies. Every day they have a rotating selection, and always include vegan and vegetarian soups as well. My favorite so far is the chili. The only down side is that I now eat it 3-4 times a week and know that I am missing out on all of these other great selections. The tomato habanero is also excellent - and the multi grain rolls are perfection.

Killer Soup, for something that is traditionally "un-killer" such as soup, which I would usually ascribe to sissy. This place deserves the adjective in the best way possible. Its 7:35 am and I want soup from NESF. As a vegetarian -- they have so many options with their vegetable broth (and they have options for the vegan as well). If this place would closer to my apartment, I would live there. Perhaps I'll just move in and then I'd never have to leave. No I'm not a creepster, just a soup lover, and you should be too.

I love, love, love the soup factory! I have only eaten the soups, but I keep coming back for more. I can't get enough. It is also nice that the NE Soup Factory has vegan options. I haven't had a bad soup yet! I even bought the cookbook!

I took a pint of chicken noodle soup to go when I was sick, and it was good (not too salty). They have a great selection of soups, stews and chowdters. I'm sure I'll go back again since it's near where I live, but I think it's a wee bit pricey for soup...But then again, I guess it's cuz they are homemade.

Given the fact that it is frigid outside and most definitely soup weather, I thought a review of the New England Soup Factory was in order. That said, I still go to the place even when it is 90 degrees out. It is that good. I have been a frequent customer since 2000. The owners are Paul and Marjorie. Marjorie is the cooking side and Paul I think is in charge of the business side of things. Given the large number of customers, it makes me feel special that when I go in, Paul knows my name and my soup preferences. Marjorie is also a gem. I bought the cookbook (go buy it now from Amazon) and I had a question on one of the recipes, so I went and Marjorie talked to me and helped me out. As for the soup, I've never had a soup I haven't liked. There are a few staples: chicken vegetable, new England clam and corn chowder, chili con carne, lobster newburg and hearty italian beef stew. In the fall and winter they also have an amazing "pot pie". In addition to this, they also have rotating/different daily offerings. They also give you either a french or multigrain roll with the soup. Other than soup, one can order sandwiches and salads as a main meal, or various side dishes and cookies for dessert. As an FYI: they also have a location on Needham st in Newton. Let's just say I have both menu line phone numbers on speed dial :)

I stopped in here for the first time last night to grab a quick dinner. It doesn't look like anything fancy from the outside, but boy was it good! While strolling through the menu, I spotted the New England and corn chowder...together! wow, what a novel idea. I decided to get it and it was ready right away. It even came with a delicous multi-grain roll. The soup was AMAZING. I don't think I've ever had new england chowder that good...maybe it was the corn added, I want to know what's in that! The roll was also wonderful for dipping and savoring. I will definitely be back...mmmmmmm:-)

What's all the fuss about they get a star for freshness and cleanliness and a star for their courteous and friendly staff. The chicken soup is good, but if you tried the chicken noodle soup less than a mile away in JP on centre street at "El oriental DE Cuba" you'd think you died and went to chicken noodle heaven. I went to try the chili and although it was nicely spicy for a place that specializes in soups and stews I was surprised and disappointed they used ground meat and relied too heavily on a tomato base the beans are the only memorable thing about this chili soft and meaty... You're gonna think I'm joking but one of the best chili's I've had in Boston is the one in stop and shop at their little soup self serve thingy's really good and made with meat ungrounded that is, try it you'll find it ironic but thank me none the less. BTW I love soup but this place is over all too expensive and not impressive on the taste front. BTW I fell in love with Amanda with her cute hat and kind nature...

at first, i was totally in love. gosh, how come i love every soup i try?? and then after about 3 months i realized - they all taste the same. not sure if it's the stock or what....but i haven't had their soup in ages - got hooked on their salads which have a fantastic lemon dressing...and then today i went in and got some chicken noodle for the first time ever. wow, was it terrible!!! i think all the soups have some kind of sweetener in them (rumor has it balsamic vinegar??) and it just does not work in the chicken noodle. really weird aftertaste...whoa - couldn't even eat it. so, i guess it just depends on the particular soup, but the salads are great, bread is great, chicken salad is great, and little italy is great....so taste the soup before you buy.

Mmmm...soup! It was 94 degrees today and I was still in the mood for soup from New England Soup Factory. They have so many good choices - they even have cold soup for hot days. You can sample any of the soups before you order, and the staff is really friendly. Their cookies and brownies are really delicious, too.

LOVE the Soup Factory!! I work in Brookline and I'm always stopping by for lunch or to grab a dinner for the road. Staff is great and they let you sample any soup you want. Amazing soups and great ready-to-go sides and salads! Occasionally they have frittatas which I highly recommend trying as well.

Every year, as soon as September rolls around, I'm ALL about the soup. I can't get enough, and it gets to the point that I refuse any solid food. New England Soup Factory is the enabler- well, that, and my husband who has added NESF to his speed dial on the cell phone in order to get me the goods, fast! They're great because: 1. They always have Chicken Vegetable (add noodles) and it's good 2. They have a Soup Line- you can call and hear the soups of the day! 3. They post their daily menu on their web site, too 4. They serve up the best soup around, and have great variety. Favorites include Ribbolita (Italian bread soup), Broccoli and Cheddar, Asparagus & Cheddar (love cheese), Yellow Tomato and rice... They're great, they're consistent. The soup will warm your soul! Love, love, love it! Only taking away one star from their rating because the Chicken Vegetable tends to have CRAZY large carrots in it, and they take over the bowl! They're like the size of half dollars! I wish they'd use normal sized carrot. Geez. Other than that, though....YUMMY!!!

I may be biased because I used to work here, but I loovvee NESF. I am craving Sweet potato corn chowder right now like you wouldn't believe. I'm usually a picky eater but I can pretty much eat anything there.. minus the spicy stuff.. can't do spicy! :( Delicious deserts and sandwiches too!

Man, NE Soup Factory, I have tried so hard to love thee. Your location is perfect, right by the T. Your name is well...industrial, but chic. Your soup blends are artsy and clever. So why do I get the major runs everytime I eat with you? I thought maybe it was just me, and that maybe things had changed in the many years (at least 5) since I was there last...so I brought my beloved to eat with you, too...Damn your butternuts! If he didn't race for the bathroom as soon as we left. Something about the smell when we walked in should have alerted me...kind of like spoiled milk? Alas, I'm not sure why you are so popular, unless peeps just don't know good eats from this.

The chicken noodle, artichoke bisque (so thick and creamy!) and the Italian ribbolita (a bean soup made with bread) are my favorites. I love having an excuse to come to Brookline-- I always stop in and get a few quarts of soup. The only "bad" thing I have eaten here is the chicken pot pie-- I was pretty disappointed. Be aware that they do validate parking, so there's no need to curse up a storm while searching for street parking.

  • Deb c.

I have recently had the Chili, Chicken Pot Pie and the Lobster Bisque. The Chili and Chicken Pot Pie were very good; however, The Lobster Bisque was a huge disappointment, with only two small shards of lobster in it for $8.95. Suggest that they should call it Lobster-flavored bisque instead.
