Slammed but food is good. Deceivingly expensive- but worth every penny.

You have to have a game plan for Neptune Oyster. And patience. What should be stated more clearly in the reviews is that you go in, give them your cell, and they will call you when you're table is about (10-15 min) from clearing. So what we should have done was put in our name and number, then gotten ready for dinner, and returned. Instead we put in our name at 7 PM, were told it was a 2 to 2.5 hour wait. We had a drink elsewhere, wandered the North End, then checked back in at 8:45. They said it would be closer to 9:30. So we sat outside and waited. When our table was finally ready a bit AFTER 10 PM, I was tired, hungry, and annoyed. It's bad to wait 2.5 hours, but to wait over 3 hours was beyond reasonable. There are two steps into the restaurant, and the staff helped me in (I use a wheelchair), but then I saw that even their low tables are high. I was going to simply sit with the table at chin height, and then I realized that I had to transfer to the bench because otherwise my chair would have been in the way (the place is tiny). Once we were seated, it was a lovely experience. It's a beautiful, clean, cozy, space, with comfy bench and marble top tables. The oysters were delicious; our waiter selected 6 for us. We also had an amazing octopus salad, which might have been the most inventive, delicious dish of the evening. The octopus was warm and perfectly cooked. The crab claw was good - I really like the aioli dipping sauce. Then we had a hot lobster roll. Yes, it was big, tons of lobster. We split it. It was very good - just a roll, lobster, and butter. The fries are made in house, and they are OK. My glass of cava was great. Then the bill - over $100 for the two of us. The $28 lobster roll takes a toll, as do the oysters at about $3 each. Would I go back again? Only if I happened to be in the North End and they didn't have a wait over 30 min (I'm not sure if that ever exists). It's not worth a 3 hour wait.
(3)AnAppleaDay A.
Overrated! The lobster roll did have tons of meat, but didn't have any type of seasoning. The fries with it were soggy.
(2)Laura N.
The lobster roll lives up to the hype. I'm a huge lobster roll fan and this one is one of my favorites. I highly recommend the hot buttered lobster. The roll itself is fine (nothing amazing) but it was packed with huge chunks of the sweetest lobster I've ever had. Still dreaming about it. I also ordered a selection of oysters. All fresh and tasty but I preferred the oysters I had at Island Creek Oyster Bar the night before. Also, it's a small place. When I went the host was telling people there was a three hour wait so plan your trip accordingly.

What's there to say about this place that already hasn't been said. Neptune Oyster is a Boston institution and has the best lobster roll outside of Portland, ME. Do yourself a favor and order a variety of oysters and the hot butter lobster roll, and wash it all down with a glass of Sav Blanc. If that's not the perfect meal, I really don't know what is. Fair warning, the wait can be maddening. But rest assured, if you're willing to endure it, your efforts will be fully rewarded with one of the best meals of your life.
(5)matt p.
Friggin' great. Expect a wait. Fun with a group date.
(5)Maya H.
I really like the lobster roll and oyster here, taste really fresh, but the problem is you need to wait longtime
(5)T J.
I wish I could give a review of the food, but they wouldn't even seat us. I called about an hour ahead and they said they don't take reservations, which is fine. But when we walked in, we as well as 4 other patrons, stood in the doorway for almost 20 minutes before someone had to ask one of the service staff if we could be helped. They all saw us standing there but with over half a dozen staff walking around, not a single person came over to speak with any of us. Then after 20 minutes they said they were all sold out and no longer seating any new parties. They mentioned something about a list, but that wasn't pointed out to me when I called ahead. We walked in at 8pm by the way. Even NYC has better service than that!

Decided to eat here last night with a buddy, got here around 7pm told us that the wait is about 3hrs. Im thinking we're only once in Boston so we gotta try this 4.5 stars restaurant. After 3.5hrs of waiting (almost 10:30pm) We finally got seated at the bar lol. I ordered the squid ink lobster risotto. I had better ones than this. It had chunks of lobster alright, but the texture of the risotto is more like a gumbo than a risotto. It is not a well composed dish. My friend ordered their lobster roll and he enjoyed it. We also got the Triton sampler but didn't finished it. Our server was pretty awesome that's why I'm giving them 2 star. We ended up paying $180 for just the 2 of us and wasn't satisfied with the food that they serve.
(2)Marisa G.
Came here at 10pm on a saturday night thinking we werent going to get seated but we surprisingly got the last table (even though we didnt eat until like 10:45pm) we got the butter lobster roll without the bun and the clam chowder. BEST LOBSTER I HAVE EVER HAD!! I was so happy after this meal! I can't stop raving about it! Totally worth the wait and I definitely want to come back!!
(5)Cheng S.
It is definitely not worthy spending more than two hours to try the street corner food. There are so many better seafood choices in Boston. Don't believe those big name. All are traveler's traps.
(2)Mike D.
Food is delicious. Highly recommended. Only reason Im not giving it 5 stars is because seating is very cramped, and the wait is very long. We knew what we were getting into though. delicious lobster roll and fries. very good oysters.
(4)Nita W.
We waited 3 and half hours for dinner. I think the food was ok...probably have high expectations after such a long wait. It was noisy and crowded too.
(2)Nicole C.
Hands down. Best lobster roll I've ever had in my entire life! The lines are super obnoxious but the food is crazy. We were able to put in our name and walk around and visit the Paul Revere house and make it back in time (approx 1 hour wait). If you're not in a rush and don't mind a small cramped spot, the food is amazing. It's definitely a tight squeeze and you usually share a table with a stranger...but food is worth it. Just make sure you know you're going to wait around an hour. Giving it 5 stars based solely on the amazing lobster roll
(5)Yu M. C.
Waited 25 mins just to put my name down on list. The wait was 4.5 hours. Figured just putting my name down would be worth the 25 min line wait. Was never acknowledged by the list keeper. I understand it's a busy and popular place, but the experience was upsetting. Will not come again.
(1)Ian G.
Awesome burger! Very expensive place, though, even at lunch, so be prepared for that. I will say I had a cool experience here. We sat at the bar due to the wait and when we ordered we were told that I couldn't order the crab bisque as they were out of crab. However, 5 mins later, our server told us, it was now available. The crab was so fresh it practically melted in my mouth! It couldn't have been pulled out of the water more than an hour before it was in my soup. Amazing!
(5)M.J. C.
What can you write about perfection located in the heart of Boston's North End? You must give yourself a minimum of 1-2 hours lead time to get into this ocean lovers paradise. Enjoy the Johnny Cakes and crab meat and warm lobster rolls and the daily specials... You can't go wrong!
(5)A H.
The greatest thing you will ever eat in your life is the Johnnycake. Trust me!
(5)Naiyi C.
"I had better ones" can conclude my review. Plus the wait was about 3 hours. No worth it at all. They do have a huge selection of wine. That would bump its rating up a little. Oysters were fresh, my mate doesn't agree though. She's more sensitive. Below are the main disappointments. We went through the pictures and ordered lobster roll with north end cioppino. Shrimps in cioppino had pretty heavy taste of dirt/earth. Lobster... had no taste. The volume of lobster was good for that price, but that was indeed one of the most tasteless lobster I had. Oh, the fries was fantastic. Otherwise 2 stars for this price. I agree with the term "tourist trap" someone posted earlier.
(3)Sheila R.
I really enjoyed Neptune Oyster. Fun atmosphere and great food! Would definitely go back! The restaurant was a little small and we had to wait awhile for our food but it was delicious and worth the wait.
(4)M B.
Definitely satisfies a craving for seafood. However seems like the hype is a bit over the top. Yes it is a nice place with good food and good service, but I wouldn't go as far as classifying it as the BEST of Boston. The pack of oysters was way too salty, maybe because it was already late in the day. Worth the 1-2 hours waiting list only the first time. Once you get it - it is not much better than many other good seafood places around, and thankfully Boston is not short of such awesome places.
(4)sloe j.
you know it's good, just go and go early one of the best lobster rolls you will ever eat and fucking delicious oysters but you knew that - so why are you asking me?
(5)Jeremy F.
Absolutely love this place. Best 'lobstah' roll you will find. Period. Small, and usually has a wait, but it's totally worth it. Also has a great raw bar if that's what you're looking for. Service has always been great - just be willing to deal with the crowd.
(5)Jackie M.
Table for 3 waited in line for aboout 30 minutes prior to opening, yet we still had to wait for the 2nd round of table. Finally, we scored a counter seat which waas tight and this place is not that big. Yay for the extensive list of fresh raw oysters plus other cooked food that I didn't try. Oyssters were very fresh. When the description says it's salty.. Yes... they mean it... few oysters were extremely salty.. Anyhow, I really enjoyed sampling variety of fresh oysters from the east coast.
(4)Rachel A.
Worth the 3 1/2 hour wait! Put your name on the list and kick around the neighborhood. You're near Paul Revere's house, the Old North Church, and the shops at Fanueil Hall. Or, wander across the street to Vito's for a beer. So, back to Neptune... The oysters are so fresh you taste the ocean. Absolutely spectacular. My husband and I shared two dozen, then a bowl of fresh, made to order clam chowder, and split a hot lobster roll. I thought the lobster roll could've been more toasted, my husband loved it, I just have thing about mushy bread. Excellent wine list! They don't do dessert. Great service. They take it slow and you won't be rushed! Expect to share a table.
(5)Yellow O.
I feel like I'm missing something. I'm not understanding the hype. It's good, but not 2 hour wait good. maybe I had high expectations reading all the great reviews, but I left a bit disappointed
(3)Cindy W.
If they serve their seafood any fresher, it would still be hoping around. The 1.5 hour wait was totally worthwhile. There is a reason why this place is packed at 7pm while all the restaurants around are empty. I had oysters, the razor clam cocktail and a nice glass of muscadet. The oysters were fresh and delicious, and the razor clam was topped with a red pepper relish. I think it could've used a bit more seasoning, but it's a fine line between complimenting the natural flavor of the clams and over powering it. I would definitely go back to try the lobster roll and other things on the menu if I lived in the area. It is pricey, but you really don't want to have "cheap" low quality seafood.
(5)Laurie W.
It is a long wait! be prepare and take a stroll around the area while you wait...why not right? So after the 2 hour wait for lunch (we walked around lol) we sat down and of course, wanted to try everything We ordered the Lobster roll hot with butter (the infamous of course) Lobster tacos (did not display price - it was $36...) Clam chowder (of course) Al la carte fresh seafood I had the chance to try the shrimp cocktail and they were delicious! Plump and tender and cooked just right! How else can i describe it!? It was sweet?...it was!! The clam chowder - it was okay....a bit watery than i preferred and it was lacking salt and i only found a few clams Lobster tacos - if i knew it cost $36 for 3, we would have never ordered it. It wasnt even that good and the lobsters' flavor were taken over by all the other stuff on it, like the sauce and toppings...DO NOT GET Lobster roll - it was good, definitely fresh and simple but thats what were looking for right?! Lobster, butter and bread...SIMPLE! I feel like i had better and i wish i had the chance to try the cold lobster roll with mayo and compare the two, i think i would have enjoyed the cold one better im not sure i would come back since i wasnt completely WOWed by the dishes i chose but it was definitely an experience to have.
(3)Novis L.
i just say, I'm Fan of Neptune oyster,,!! Like it man
(4)Stacy D.
Had an interesting experience here. Learned that it's important to check your bill and take photos of your food. They listed 12 oysters on their order sheet so I just ordered one of each to sample all of them. It should have been around $36 but when I got the bill it said something like "Dozen Sampler" $39. I was just curious about the weird pricing strategy and asked the waiter why is it more expensive to order all 12 oysters together than to order 12 individually, he could not give an explanation. His manager came by and said that dozen meant baker's dozen so they gave me 13 oysters ... ok ... I only ordered 12 on the order sheet and I thought baker's dozen meant that they'd give you one for free, but that's fine. Was about to pay when I looked at my phone where I took a picture of the plate of oysters when they brought it out, they actually only served 11. Not impressed with the game they are playing here. Service was also slow, but can't blame the waiter, the place was so crowded there's barely room to move. Don't recommend. There are so many great seafood places in North End, don't need to come to this specific spot.
(2)Alexandrea M.
Hot lobster roll was absolutely delicious. I am a huge fan of lobster rolls, and this one was one of the best I've had. There were no tables left, so we had to sit at the bar, but the bartender was nice and quick. The one downside of coming here is that it is extremely crowded quite often (which is of course a really good sign) and the restaurant isn't very large. So if you want to get in for dinner, it will have to be an early one. Or, if you're just one or two people, you might be able to find a seat at the bar.
(4)Patricia S.
the best sub shop around!! Love the way they shred the lettuce :-)
(5)Vicky F.
Absolutely the most popular place around the little Italy area. I don't think they take reservations. So all u gotta do is to show up early at the doorstep, and put down ur name and number and wait to be called. We were there around 5:30 and waited for 3hrs...... Worth it? I'm not sure for a 3-hr wait. Probably wouldn't do it again. The oysters are super fresh and yum, not so clean ur gonna get some shells in the juice. Chowder is good! We didn't get the lobster roll that everyone got- which is prob why the food didn't come in time... The tartar was great to start, but they seafood plate was just ok... One thing that they do - that we wish we got was the whole lobster with corn! That looked really yummy! A little overpriced, but again as popular as they are, they can literally charge any price...
(4)Ferdinand C.
The wait here can be long. We were told 1.5 hours but actually got seated around 45 min later. Visited here being excited for their lobster roll. It was okay. Nothing spectacular. It was $30 but didn't taste like it should've been that pricey. We also ordered fried clam bellies which were also okay tasting. My fiancée and I left this restaurant feeling like it was overrated.
(3)Denise C.
Food-wise, this place is definitely a 5 star. I came here 3 years ago. To this day, their lobster roll is still the best that I have had. The reason why I gave a 4 star though, is because the store is puny. It is uncomfortable to sit there. Tables are too close together. Plus the wait is ridiculously long. It is worth it, but there is a reason why I didn't go back.
(4)Cindy G.
The first time I came here was on a Saturday around 7:30pm, and after 10 minutes of waiting to put my name down, the host told us that the restaurant was too crowded for the night so could no longer take names for a table for 2. Bummer. The second time I came here was on a Friday around 5:45pm, and after waiting another 10 minutes to put my name down, the host told us that a table for 4 would be a 4-HOUR WAIT. No, sorry, our stomachs can't wait until 10pm. The third time I came here was on a Tuesday morning at 11:15am, fifteen full minutes before the restaurant opened, and the host was able to seat the 2 of us at the edge of the bar right next to the door (YAY FINALLY!). Moral of the story: get here early. The food here is absolute perfection. I haven't been able to find a place with better oysters than Neptune oysters. Not only were they super fresh, but they also had awesome flavors, some saltier and some more citrusy! I recommend trying at least one of everything on the oyster menu, which changes regularly based on what was freshly fished out of the ocean that day. The hot lobster roll is a must. There was SO MUCH fresh lobster and the roll was so buttery, definitely was the best roll I've had in the world. My friend got the cold roll, and she definitely didn't get the same reaction. The mayo was a bit overwhelming, so definitely stick to the hot roll. The service isn't the most amazing I've gotten, but honestly with the crowds of tourists and locals that the staffs have to deal with everyday, I'm surprised the service has stayed on par with the average restaurant in the area.
(5)Bobby Y.
Beware: This is a tourist / Yelper trap! Be prepared for extremely small (but tasty) oysters at $3 and $4+ a piece. When I say "extremely small", I mean the meat in some of these $4 oysters is easily 1/5th of the size of the meat in an average say, Blue Point oyster? Don't get me wrong - Neptune Oyster serves up some of the most delicious Pacific oysters on the planet, but if I were going to try to get full on just oysters alone - not a completely unreasonable plan - I would have to spend at least $200-$250 just on oysters for myself. That being said, we spent over $100 on oysters on this visit and that felt like sharing a light appetizer. Just a bad value. Pass on the mussels bowl. We ordered 2 bowls of them because I'm a sucker for fresh mussels - and our server said they were "great!". Wrong! More than half were the small shrunken orange variety, some were average Mediterraneans, and only a middling few came out plump. A disappointment, and one of the main reasons we came here and waited in line for 40 minutes before they opened. A great mussels dish is incredibly hard to find (and you *won't* find it here!) Their famous Yellowtail / hamachi crudo was very small (but tasty) and expensive for what it was. You will think it's a small portion. You could eat 4 entire orders of this by yourself and your stomach won't even blink. When your brain knows something is expensive, your brain tells your tastebuds it tastes better than it really is. This happens all day, every day at Neptune Oyster :) Their famous sea urchin (uni) toast is extremely salty. It's mostly crusty bread and butter, and it definitely sounds more delicious than it actually is. Trust me on this. If you closed your eyes and someone fed this to you, you'd be like, "What the hell is this?" I would only wait a maximum of 10 mins to eat here, and if I did, I would only order beer (which you can get anywhere) and a few select West coast oysters and call it a snack. IF I had waited 3 hours outside to eat here - like others routinely do, apparently - I would probably think this was the best, most exclusive food in the fuckin' world! This Pabst Blue Ribbon is the best beer ever! Wow - the most comfortable wooden chair I've ever sat in! Et cetera, et cetera. I'm not falling for it (again).
(2)Jenny B.
Neptune is our place to celebrate special occasions. Food is always amazing and I love that while they don't take reservations, they take your number and you can walk around the North End until your table's ready. We always start with a bunch of oysters and I have to recommend everything off the menu because we make a point to always try something new and it's always fantastic. We will always always be back.
(5)Karen P.
Had to wait but it was worth it! I tried 4 different oysters and 2 clams and oh my!! They are the best I have ever had. I was helped by the lovely waitress to pick a white wine to go with it and it didn't disappoint. So nice to be sitting at the counter and watching them work. Great music and atmosphere
(4)Tiffany S.
Small venue but amazing lobster spaghettini/ only served on Monday nights. Great food
(4)Tracey L.
Decided to check this place out after seeing all the rave reviews. We came on a Sunday for lunch and was told it would be a 1.5 hour wait. They took my name and number down and said they would call when a table was ready. After walking around the North End for about at hour they called and said someone cancelled their reservation so we got seated early. The restaurant is very small and can feel cramped inside. But it's decorated nicely. We decided to go with the oysters and two lobster rolls; one with butter and one with mayo. The oysters were very fresh and we enjoyed them a lot. The lobster rolls were huge! The bun was nicely toasted and overflowing with lobster meat. They also give a lot of fries. The negatives would be the price because at $27 for one lobster roll, it's a lot. Parking can also be tough in the area. Not sure if I would come back again but it's definitely one of those places where you have to check out at least once.
(3)Garett S.
Worthy of an hour wait, and surprisingly worth all of the hype! Lobster Roll with hot butter is simply a "must do". As one patron nearby commented "you can have it with mayo anywhere". Upon reflection, it's much better served hot with butter in a soft, delicate roll anyway. Also, we tried a couple of other signature dishes such as the scallops and the grits. Hard to believe it, but the grits could rival anything we've had in the south. Think "grandma's country grits"! The scallops were hot, tender and perfectly prepared with just the right amount of searing to carmelize the outside. We sampled a few oysters as well (my son's first!), and we especially enjoyed the Kusshi oysters from B.C., which were small, sweet and a had a hint of salt. The only small let down was the Clam Chowder, which cost this North End eatery one star. It was a little bland and soupy and the clams and potatoes were a little tough (some might say undercooked). Everything else including the service was exceptional and worthy of the wait. Hint: come early, leave your phone number and walk around the North End to build up your appetite.

So far, my impressions are good. I signed up for the 60/60 program two months ago. The excercise physiologists are very attentive and knowledgeable. I just re-signed to a 10 month commitment. The place is clean and there are a wide variety of classes available. Bathrooms could use a more thorough cleaning.
(3)Diana J.
Probably one of the best lobster rolls I've ever had in my life. And I've had a lot of lobster rolls. The space is small and the wait is long, but I promise you it is WORTH IT. Nice thing is that you can put your name in and they will call you when a table has opened up. Or try going in around 4pm like I did :) I would definitely opt for the hot butter roll over the cold one. The side salad that come with it is also very good- has a lovely citrus kick that complements the rich buttery lobster very well. Also, the johnny cake is very good! Amazing texture of sweet corn cake and salty trout caviar that just needs to be all in your mouth at the same time. Drooool. If only I lived there...
(5)Nancy N.
I came here around 11am with a small group of friends, knowing there might be a wait. It was still packed. We had to wait single file in a small entryway, the scent of the sea enrobing us. Just standing there, I felt a little transported to a boat in the middle of the ocean. Was the wait worth it? Definitely. I think it was one of my favorite places to eat in Boston. The lobster rolls are a must here! Huge chunks of lobster in a perfectly buttered roll. I also had the clam chowder. It was a little salty but so warming (it was the epic Boston winter of 2014/2015) so I kept sipping until the bowl was empty. One of my friends got the special, a lobster spaghetti. It didn't have as much lobster as the roll but was significantly more expensive. I would pass on that. Of course I also had the oyster. I like that the waiters really know about the different flavor profiles of the oysters. They will help guide you in selecting something you might like. The only thing that was terrible was the mussels. They were gritty. We complained and they took it off our bill so it was no big deal. I would definitely come back if given the chance. I still think about that lobster roll.
(4)Qianqi L.
waited about 15-20 mins for a seat even though it's like 430pm on a Wednesday. Surprised that so many people are here for a meal at such odd time. So be ready to wait despite odd times on a weekday because the place is really small. Ordered 4 oysters for myself. They were all super good and super fresh. Honestly I would love to order more but it's kinda expensive. Also ordered the lobster roll. Love how's the butter bread and lobster blends so well. Definitely big enough a portion for sharing though. Highly recommend this place to anyone who is willing to splurge a little.
(5)Raymel M.
This place was voted number 1 in Boston for the Lobster Roll. I am not of a Lobster lover so since I was in town for business I decided hey, why not. Lol. This restaurant is of a side street and very quaint. I sat at the bar and the staff are very personable and knowledgable of the menu. I had some oysters and of course the world famous lobster roll. The bartender recommended a great wine to pair with my meal. The oyster was local and very tasty. The Lobster roll can be served with hot butter or with a mayo. I choose the hot butter. The meat was very tender and robust with flavor. Still not a Lobster lover but if in Boston definitely give it a try!!!!
(4)Todd M.
Awesome lobster roll. Very good but small selection of local brews. The best oyster selection I had ever encountered, plus other raw delicacies. Super intimate and small so be prepared to wait. Bartender was incredibly helpful with menu decisions. Dying to go back.
(5)Jess T.
LOVE! The wait is two hours on a Saturday afternoon for a reason. Or several reasons. But all of them good! First of all the place is tiny with bar seating and maybe 5 tables tops. The clam chowder really is to die for. It's not your usual bread bowl chowder, it's a slightly thinner consistency soup but don't let that fool you because the flavors are just perfect, peppery and perfect. We also got the fried clam strips to share which was really good and fresh and unlike any clam strips I've ever had. I also wished that I had not eaten a snack while waiting to get seated so I can finish the generous portions of lobster chunks they packed on my buttered roll. Divine. Even though my bf asked for butter on the side. All in all, perfection. Show up, put your name down and entertain yourself for two hours but do not eat a snack while you wait. They will call you back.
(5)Heather D.
Heaven is a place on earth! From the service to the food my experience at Neptune was out of this world. Being a single diner the wait for 6:00pm on a Tuesday was not bad at all compared to other reviews, I maybe waited a total of 15 minutes for a spot at the bar. The person handling the other walk ins was extremely polite and was on top of her list. Both of the bartenders that served me extremely friendly and polite, the one even offering tips for my upcoming trip to Greece. The oyster selection was amazing, being a person that has met an oyster they didn't like before this was not the case. I ordered 6 different oysters and loved everyone. The wine selection was phenomenal and the Santorini wine went perfectly with my hot lobster roll. I couldn't of had a better experience and I will 100% return on my next trip to Boston not only for the food but for the service.
(5)Kris B.
Best oysters. Great knowledgeable service from guy behind named Tuna Loved the wine too
(5)Linda S.
Alma Rosa Winery in Buellton, Calif has a wonderful tasting room! Right now they have live music during their happy hr, on Friday and Saturday, from 4-7. We had a fabulous server named Bobbie. He was super knowledgable about the wines we were tasting. He made the whole experience unforgetable!!!
(5)Scott T.
We went here for lunch on a Friday. Even thought there were only two of us we had to wait 1.5 hours. The seafood was amazing. I had an octopus cocktail as a starter, and then a tuna tartare as a main course. Both were very fresh and flavorful. We will be back.
(5)Saba S.
A little pricey but so worth it. They have great wine pairings with such fresh oysters and clams. if you only have those you won't be filled up. I remember downing 21 oyster and clams and it did not make a dent on my appetite. So i ordered the octopus cocktail, which is like a ceviche octopus salad, which was SOOO YUMMY. I realized enjoyed my time here.

Fast, simple , and accurate review for people who don't want to read a novel finding out if a place is good. Ordered: ( 2/3 stars) I had 3 of all the different type of oysters and the lobster roll. The oysters were absolutely fresh. However, for the price, you can get the same quality elsewhere for cheaper. Same for the lobster roll. The size was a little disappointing. For the same price you could get a huge lobster sub next store of same quality and taste. For the price, there are plenty of other great options. Service: (1/1 star) Good service. Cleanliness and parking (0/1 star) Parking is hard to find. Good luck getting a table if you come during regular meal times or even after (2-3 hour wait) Eating here once is good enough to fulfill the hype.

I went on a recommendation from a friend. By far the freshest oysters I have ever had. I've been all over New York and these oysters were hand down the best. I had 6 to start my meal and finished with 6 more for desert. Mid course I had the muscles which were cooked perfectly. My main dish was a squid salad. Overall the service was great (even help give me advice on how to get around Boston) and food was amazing. I will be heading back to this place on my next trip to Boston

Loved this place! We got here around 11:15 on a Saturday, luckily the line was short-ish, but it quickly grew as it got closer to opening time. We were lucky to get seated in first seating. We (2ppl) ordered a lobster roll with salad, the Johnny cakes, scallops, some oysters and clams. It was perfect amount and we were stuffed! The lobster roll was out of the world delicious with generous, meaty portions. And what was surprisingly good was the Johnny cakes, which is like a pancake with sugary crusty edges plus a bit of seafood and caviar on top. It was such a unique but balanced blend of flavors - highly recommended!! The lobster roll is good for 2 people to share, this way you can try other dishes and oysters! Also get the salad instead of fries - your stomach will thank you!

For the wait as one person it was about 45 minutes for dinner time, the service was wonderful!! The oysters were okay, I did not try the meals however.

I'm not ashamed to say i drove up to Boston from NJ this past weekend just to get a lobster roll from Neptune Oyster. Granted i've only been here twice, its hard to leave without being completely satisfied. I'm sure ill be back again. Note: theres usually a long wait time (~1-2hrs) but its worth it. Going with a hot buttered lobster roll ($29) and a half of dozen oysters is a solid combo. The lobster roll is served on a hot brioche buttered bun with large chunks of lobster meat soaked in hot butter. Its a pretty rich meal which can get messy but you wont care after devouring it. Both times i've ordered the meal i've never come close to doing any damage on my fries so i might consider switching to a salad side next time. The cold lobster roll with mayo is also good but i prefer going with the hot buttered lobster roll. You get a better lobster experience without being somewhat overcome by the mayo taste.

If you give this place less than 4 stars, you are clearly whiny and impossible to please. Or you just don't know what the best seafood tastes like. My all time favorite meal to eat in Boston is the Seared George's Bank Scallops from Neptune's. They are to-die for. I have had scallop dishes from most of the nice restaurants in Boston and nothing even compares. I also don't eat meat so even if you order this dish without the duck, it is still amazing. I have also had their mussels, raw bar, lobster roll, clam chowder, etc. - all delicious. And yes, the wait time is really long. But it's not like you have to stand in line like half of the other restaurants in the North End. Non Issue.

My fiancee took me here the night we got engaged and it lived up to all expectations. We went around 4pm knowing there would be at least a 2 hour wait - which there was, so we ended up going over to Sail Loft for some drinks before dinner. I will say the staff at Neptune is amazing - they quoted us a 2 hour wait and we went back right at that time and were able to walk right in. We were able to sit right at the front bar so we had a front row seat of the oyster shucking and could do some people-watching out the front window. I forget who our server/bartender was but she was amazing and recommended some excellent wine. The oysters were the best I've ever had in Boston or anywhere else. Great selection and so fresh and tasty. We also tried the mussels which were unreal and each had the hot lobster roll. It was the most amazing, decadent thing I'd ever tried! I will always remember Neptune as a spot for a special great meal as well as the last meal I had as a "single" lady!
(5)CJ J.
Great lobster rolls! Best in the city! Checking with your phone number and then go tour around the north end and market area. Note: beware of the "spill over" locations nearby. Definitely look at reviews before heading to a nearby alternative!
(5)Kim C.
Believe the hype. I must admit, waiting 2.5 hours for food is ridiculous. Thankfully, we were visiting Boston and there was plenty to see and do nearby. In fact, my boyfriend and I even shared a cold lobster roll at Quincy market and a cannoli from Mike's during our wait. How's that for gluttony? Once we finally got seated, we ordered a dozen oysters, clam chowder, and the hot lobster roll. The lobster roll is what dreams are made out of. The buttered bread is stuffed to the brim with hot lobster tossed in even more butter. Yes, it was the best lobster roll I've ever had and no, nothing in LA comes close. They had oysters from the west and east coast but we ordered ones exclusively from Boston. They were all extremely fresh and delicious! The clam chowder, as others have noted, is more on the thin side rather than rich and creamy. However, it was still really tasty. Highly recommend!

My friends and I have traveled from New York on several occasions just to eat here and head back home. They allow in person reservations and I have waited up to 2 hours before, but it is well worth the wait. If lobster rolls are your thing, you MUST get the warm lobster roll. Their oyster selection have never been disappointing on their numerous times I've been here. We usually order one oyster per person to start and continue our rounds with the ones we like the most. I'd try to keep the number of people in your party low, maybe 3-5 people? It's not a huge spot. The first time I ate here, I was with a party of 8 or 9 and they did seat us. But on a recent occasion, we tried to get seating for a party of 13.. We ended up just splitting up and making two separate reservations.

We're willing to line up at 11:00am for Neptune, and it never disappoints. Three of us shared Cherrystones, Johnnycake, Sardines, Clam Chowder, Lobster Roll, and the amazing Squid Ink Risotto. Washed down with a Rose. Everything is absolutely top notch. Yes, it's a bit loud, crowded and crazy, but the food cannot be beat.

As a first timer in Boston, I was very excited to try Neptune Oyster after reading the rave reviews. Unfortunately I must say that my experience was quite disappointing. Located in North End, the establishment itself is very tiny with a few tables and a bar area. Upon approaching the restaurant, you are immediately greeted by a crowd of people waiting in line. For the 30 minutes that I stood in line, however, I did not see any employees approach or even acknowledge those who were waiting outside. Everyone was vastly confused as to how they were going to be seated and there were no hosts or hostesses in sight. As a result, I mistakenly believed that the bar seats were first-come first-serve. The host appeared almost immediately (shocker) and admonished me for taking an empty stool. He then proceeded to take down everyone's name and phone number. The wait for a party of 1 was about 40 minutes on a Tuesday night. Coincidentally, I ended up sitting right back at the empty stool, where the bartender promptly took my order for a hot Maine lobster roll ($27). The lobster roll came out within 15 minutes, with a side of French fries and ketchup. The lobster roll was well-portioned, with hefty chunks of buttered meat stuffed in the toasted bread-roll. While the lobster roll was good and filling, it did not have the "wow" factor that I was expecting. The lobster meat got too chewy and the amount of coated butter was too light. Overall, the flavors were lacking. Throughout my meal, the bartender was not engaging. He seemed uninterested and did not try to strike up a conversation (but did to those around me). All-in-all, I left Neptune Oyster with a disheartening experience and will probably not return in the future.

If you love oysters, this is the place to go. Love the selection, makes you feel spoiled an decadent. Getting the large round platter of oysters makes me feel like a kid in a candy store. The line/wait is a drag but worth it. We like to bring our out of town guests as a "treat." Everyone has loved it.

Clay Hyundai Auto Body Repair in Newton. I just wanted everyone to know the type of service I received from this much needed service my vehicle required due to an accident. I have over the last 5 years been a loyal customer with Clay Hyundai in Norwood. David and Edwin are amazing and extremely helpful. I have now met their counterparts Dwayne, Eric and John at the Auto Body center in Newton. As a single female and car owner, these gentlemen have never taken advantage of me because I am female. Since I have been a customer, these individuals could not be more professional, helpful, empathetic and honest. I commend Clay Hyundai for having such great employees. I am extremely comfortable receiving assistance when needed from your staff. I just wanted to publicly thank them and let them know that they are appreciated. Please make sure that they are commended for their hard and honest work. May God bless all of you Thanks again, Dwayne, Eric, John, Edwin and David.

Yes. Neptune Oyster has the best lobster roll in Boston. Probably the best lobster roll I've ever had. Definitely the largest lobster roll I've ever had. Definitely the most expensive lobster roll I've ever had. Definitely the most ritual and effort involved (queueing at 11am for an 11:30am Saturday opening) to spend ~$36 total on an admittedly massive hot lobster roll. That said... if Neptune is too busy and/or too unfriendly or you're on a tighter budget, just grab one at Pauli's next door instead without regret. This is not realtor-speak, it is literally next door. It will be about half the price and almost as good. Neptune won't mind, one less customer to turn away hungry.
(5)Beth E.
Very limited seating, but it is worth the wait. Your best bet is an early dinner bar-side which includes full menu. Neptune Oyster House offers a wide array of mixed drinks and extensive raw bar selection. The seafood is extremely fresh; it is priced in accordance with the market.
(5)John T.
This place is worth the wait. As with most places on the North End, its not a huge establishment, its almost always busy, and the food is worth it. We had three orders of lobster rolls (warm), and it was everything we all hoped it would be! Don't miss this place if you have the time and want to try a lobster roll done right! Highly recommended.
(5)David B.
Must go to restaurant known for its lobster rolls and oysters! Highly recommend. Very busy need to get in line early before it opens.
(4)Eliza L.
They best oysters ever! I wish their place was larger so the waits were not as long. I would go there more if that was the case. I love how they describe the flavor of each ouster so you can get one you are going to enjoy.
(5)Micah S.
What can I say about Neptune's except that it is the best oyster experience possible. Anything you get here will be awesome. The price is high, but you'll never regret it.
(5)Caroline T.
Oh my god the food is so good here. Get the Johnny cake, I think that is one of the most delicious dishes I have ever had. Perfect blend of savory and sweet. The lobster roll is bomb.com either hot or cold, you can't go wrong. Bar service is a little spotty though.
(4)Floris L.
Great oysters! For the dish, it's good but the price is not that lovely. I ordered the Scollops and lobster. It's too salty.
(4)Lena L.
Loved loved LOVED the food! The wait was supposedly long but i didn't mind. Gave my friend and i time to walk around and explore the north end while waiting foe the call that our table was ready. Returned when it was about time for our wait in line, the wait was only about 10 minutes. I would still come back. Service was excellent too.

One of the very best seafood venues in Boston. Yes there are often lines which start around 10:30 in the morning but everyone is so friendly while you wait. Once inside you'll get a table or a bar seat. Get yourself a nice glass of wine, there's a great by the glass selection! Then order oysters or clams, or a multitude of other options... The lobster roll is probably the best I've had; cold or hot (drizzled with butter) and the perfect bun to hold the precious meat! It's as good as it gets and every morsel is a culinary delight! So fresh, nice firm, sweet lobster meat, and it's a treat every time! Other goodies include their mackerel special (2-large fish) which is delicious! It is a repeat favorite of mine and the atmosphere is just what you'd expect from a seafood bar. Sitting at bar you may even make new friends while you wash down incredibly fresh and oh so tasty shellfish with a beautiful white wine! Highly recommended, no reservations accepted, go at off times, but GO! It's memorable if you love seafood and shellfish!!
(5)Vanessa H.
Food is great and worth the wait. My boyfriend and I came here knowing that we would have to wait to get a table based on reviews. We waited almost 2 hours, but wasted our time getting a drink beforehand at the bar across the street. We had oysters that the waitress recommended, the mussels and the hot lobster roll. All were delicious. The ambience is great and not stuffy. I did find the location of the one restroom in the place to be a bit odd as it was right next to the bar and exposed to patrons when guests when in and out. Other than that, this place is worth a visit.
(5)Ian C.
best seafood I have ever had. crazy to say but it was a 2.5 hour wait and it was totally worth it
(5)Akshay S.
It's a tiny restaurant and they don't take reservations on the phone. We had to wait for 2 hours on a Tuesday night but the oysters were eclectic and amazing. Also, had the warm lobster roll - very tasty and soft. Definitely recommend if you can stomach the wait.
(4)Ben S.
great oysters Great chowder Above average service Above average interior Smells nice foo
(5)Jen B.
very good, but prefer B&G. Fried clams were amazing.
(4)Phillip H.
I have been here multiple times, and the wait is always worth it. I suggest leaving work a bit early (5:00-6:00), putting your name down, and then heading to a nearby bar or browsing around the beautiful North End to wait for a phone call. Everytime I go, I want to try something else, but I always get the hot buttery lobster roll. It simply is the best. The fries are satisfying, but the four stars really go to the incredible lobster roll. I also always get oysters to start off with. Their descriptions are surprisingly accurate (or suggestive), and the staff is always excited to help you on choosing. The reason this restaurant gets five stars rather than just four is an exceptional first experience. The first time I was here a few years ago, I never tried raw oysters, so I ordered just one. The server was very happy to help me thoroughly despite my embarrassing order. Thankfully, I fell in love with oysters after that day, so I have no problem ordering a half dozen for myself these days! You can definitely see they are passionate about seafood.
(5)Cookie M.
Superb food and experience. It was well worth waiting for a bit outside. Great and fresh seafood at a decent price. Definitely coming back.
(5)Amanda L.
Amazing. We tried almost everything the menu had to offer with champagne alongside, and it did not disappoint. We decided to leave work early and go right before 5 (in February!!) to avoid the legendary two hour+ waits, and it proved to be a good strategy. By 5:30 it was utterly packed! We had a fabulous time, spent just under two hours there, and am convinced it has earned the hype.
(5)Caroline S.
We waited 2 hours to get called; once we did get in we were seated in the back at 7:02. When I say limited space restaurant I mean if you don't like people close to you or that they can hear your conversation this place is not for you. A few minutes late another couple was sitting at our table to the right of us. We could hear their conversation. About 5 mins later a waitress came very friendly and we ordered drinks and an appetizer of oysters 4 different kids. We also went ahead and ordered our Dinner. They were out of lobster tacos. Our drinks came about 8 mins later and The appetizers arrived about 25 minutes after we ordered- very slow service and by now we are starving! We devoured our oysters. I can't recall all the names but we did like the ones with a nutty finish and the champagne oysters. Our dinner arrived about 20 minutes after our oysters. My husband and son had the lobster roll. I had the scallops with Brussels sprouts. All were very delicious and cooked well, the bread on the lobster roll could be better per my husband and 15 yr old but really the lobster was one of the best. Very fresh!! We sat right next to the kitchen entrance and deducted the lobster roll was the most popular. The bathrooms were in weed of cleaning and are not the best for the level of good the Neptune serves--need an upgrade. There is only one bathroom. The wine was a bit o the rye pricey side with $11 for a glass of wine. We would go back but perhaps at a non dinner time but would not make ur as a regular place to eat when we visit Boston. An option - There is a restaurant Bavliss next door or two doors down which was very yummy and plenty of seating. We ate there for Easter Sunday and had great lobster. It is a long wait so be ready for that. They do stop taking names at about 8:30 pm on Sunday since they close at 10 pm.
(4)Shanna L.
One of the best places the North End has to offer. I love the small, cozy feel of the place. Definitely best to go at off peak times to truly enjoy the experience. The complimentary bread was delicious. I couldn't stop dunking it in the amazing clam chowder. The clam chowder was flavorful and had a good amount of clams. It was a little thin for my liking but still amazing! The potatoes had a slight rawness to them but worth trying. The lobster roll (we got the warm one with butter) was delicious. In the future, I might be a little crazy and ask for it on the complimentary bread instead! Great amount of lobster...still I have to stay true to myself and give best lobster roll to Belle Isle. I will say though, Neptune had a fish and chip special, best fish and chips I have ever had! The fish was skate wing and so moist and flavorful. The batter was light but well seasoned and allowed the fish to shine through. Skate wing!!! Who would have thought?!!! Ah...yes...Neptune would have thought!
(4)S. A.
The best! A must try place if you are visiting Boston. Lobster rolls are amazing
(5)Mary H.
Decent but not worth the long wait! Was recommended by a friend to try their lobster roll. Got there around 530PM and been told that it was 1.5hrs wait. We came back at 7 and still had to wait. Finally got seated at the bar at 8pm. My friend and I ordered the triton platter and thought would order the lobster roll after if we were still hungry cos we ate a bit before going there. The seafood from the triton platter was fresh, had a mixed of oysters, claims, mussel, shrimp, lobster and blue crab salad. Must say that the crab was AMAZING! We were full after the seafood platter so didn't order the lobster roll. Came back the next day for lobster roll...nothing special. ..I totally feel like I make better lobster roll. Also ordered the uni toast and it was way too salty and too much butter. On the pricey side, long wait (they don't take reservations), small restaurant...I feel like it's a bit overated and I think I can get better elsewhere so a more affordable price.
(3)Dave T.
Put you name/# on the list then look for parking or walk around. Worth the 2-4 hr wait! I'm not a big seafood person, but wow, next time I'm back in Boston, coming back to try the rest of the items on the menu. Lobster roll was amazing, huge chunks of lobster! The Uni toast was very delicious! Johnnycake, I ate it all. The wife's oyster / clam platter, all looked very sizeable, clean and fresh!
(5)Mr F G And Ms M S.
The food here is simply amazing! We were here for lunch on a Monday afternoon with our family. The place is small & busy. We waited for about 30 minutes for a table. One of us got the lobster roll, cold with mayo. It was seriously good! It has a good amount of large lobster chunks in it. We also got the 2 lbs lobster dish that we can't remember the exact name at the moment. All we remember that it was just really really good. As for the portion, it's huge! The service is good but nothing spectacular. Our waitress were polite but she definitely to smile a bit. The wait can long but we think it's definitely worth the wait. If you love seafood, you must give this place a try. You won't be disappointed.
(5)Daniela J.
Great hot and cold lobster rolls & cole slaw.
(4)Chris C.
Three hour wait? You get there and they give you attitude over taking five minutes to arrive. I understand that this is par for the course with Neptune, but if you wait that long should the lobster roll be over cooked and almost inedible because it's so chewy? You'd be better served going to Row 34, Select Oyster Bar or Island Creek.
(2)Katie B.
My boyfriend and I ordered mostly from the raw bar. The best oysters I've ever had. My only complaint was the 2 hour wait, but we expected that so we got there before we were hungry. And they will call your cell when your table is ready.
(5)Saman H.
Holy wow. First off I'll start by saying the food is THE BEST sea food EVER I've truly never been to a better seafood restaurant. The oysters were amazing and I fell in love at the first bite. The sauce that they bring with the oysters is out of this world and I would walk across the country to get my hands on more of it. While the clam chowder was the most amazing dish where all the flavors blended perfectly and made this perfect combination of flavors that is to die for. For the main dish we got the lobster roll which cannot be described with words it was so absolutely fantastic. The workers there were so nice and friendly we sat at the bar and our waiter asked to take our picture and gave the best recommendations. Although the wait the first night was 3 1/2 hours and the second night the restaurant was sold out. I recommend going at around 3pm if you want a seat by 5pm. The wait is ridiculous, I've never had a longer wait anywhere and the fact that you can't make a reservation makes it that much more frustrating but understandable. If you could make reservations you wouldn't be able to get a seat for weeks. What else can you expect from one of the best restaurants in Boston. If you're in the town visiting you need to give this place a go but make sure you go in early enough to get a seat.
(5)Annie D.
Delicious! My boyfriend, brother, and I ordered a bunch of oysters and both cold and hot lobster rolls to try. Can you say fresh? The oysters were great and fresh. I could eat them all day. Among the ones I remembered, and I liked the most, was the Kumamoto and Kushii oysters (very creamy and not that salty). The lobster rolls were fantastic. I preferred the cold rolls vs. the hot ones, but they were both good. They truly let the lobster shine without putting too much mayo or butter; the lobster itself was very sweet and delicious. I wish I had a big enough stomach for the other dishes. I kept eyeing the table next to us and I was salivating, even though I was already full from what we had. As others have mentioned, the wait is super long if you do not get there 30 mins before opening (approx. 2hr wait; restaurant is really small). However, the food I believe is well worth it. They do take your name and number down and call you when your table is ready. It's convenient cause you can walk around rather than standing in line hungry. Their estimated time were pretty dead on. The waitstaff were all very nice and attentive. Definitely will come back.
(5)Sofie S.
We read about this place and decided to try it. The wait was horrendous and the hostess was rude and seemed like she hated her job. The place is small and uncomfortable. The food was alright, but nothing to come back for.
(3)Gary F.
Just randomly YELPed. This place lived up to the reputation. High marks for the best lobstah roll. Place was packed with line out the door. I got the hot lobster roll with butter and it was yummy. Will def be back.
(5)Angela W.
Lobster Roll and Oysters here are a MUST! I come here each time I visit Boston. Lobster roll: perfectly warmed, buttered up (ask for no mayo), and packed with fresh succulent lobster meat! Best lobster roll I've had compared to other places in Boston, Maine, and Philly! Raw Oysters: - Island Creek! so deliciously sweet and smooth, my favorite kind compared to other sweet oysters I've had on their menu! (ie. Wellfleet, Kumamoto, Kusshi) Don't take reservations, the place is tiny so try to avoid coming after 6PM or you'll easily wait an hour or two in line. Good thing is they take your cell number and will call you when your table is ready so you don't have to wait there.
(5)Dan K.
Always serving pristine seafood, simply and deftly prepared. Minus one star for its insane seating policy and long wait.
(4)Rhonda W.
it's a very small cute little place .. there was a long wait so we put our name in and then went walking around. We got lobster roll and oysters. The Oysters were nice and large .. can't get ones like that back in Ohio.
(5)Sarah G.
so worth the hour and a half wait!! amazing mussels and of course the hot lobster roll too!
(5)Andrew K.
A beautiful, delicious spot for classic seafood. Worth the 2.5 hour wait (fun area to walk around in)! We sat at the beautiful bar and watched them shuck oysters. Nice service.
(4)Amanda S.
I feel like Neptune Oyster is the Franklin BBQ of Austin,TX except they are seafood and in Boston, MA. If you don't know Austin or Franklin let me explain. Both places are one the top places to eat their respective genre of food according to many food bloggers and yelp. At both places you will wait in line for about 3-4 hours. Ok so now you get it a little better hopefully. I do think good things are worth waiting for and in the case of Neptune it definitely paid off! We arrived a little after 7:00 pm. Here is how it works - you stand outside in a short line to talk to the lady that sticks her head out the door every now and then. She asks you how many are in your party and then takes your phone number. They will call you when it is about 15-10 minutes before you are going to get seated. I love this method personally because you are required to just stand in one spot for a long period of time! During this process we got to know the people in front of and behind us in line. My husband and I then made our way down the street strolling for a bit. We stopped in the pub across the way to burn some time and have some drinks. Finally slightly after 10pm we were called. When we arrived it was interesting to see the people who lasted and the ones that did not. We were all super excited to indulge in a dining experience we have been anticipating for some time. We were seated by our friends from line and some people that were at the end of their meal. All the seating in the restaurant is super close and tight, so you can talk to the table next to you easily. We ordered a round of rose wine for the two of us and then the big order. If you come here you must try the Lobster roll - it is a must for sure! We got it warm and it was so buttery and delicious. The lobster literally melted in my mouth! We also go the North End Cioppino, which was a fish stew. It was so creamy. We also ordered the Neptune Plateau, which is was a nice sample of oysters, clams, mussels, shrimp, lobster and crab. Everything was super fresh! I loved the crab salad that came with it too. We even ended up sharing some things with the table next to us - our line friends. So if you are going to come to Neptune and really do it up - then do it up! Order everything you would want. Make the best of the line and enjoy every minute of the culinary experience that it is. Yes - to me it was worth the money and the wait to dine here and I would absolutely do it again!
(5)Margaret V.
Yes, I waited 3 and a half hours to get in, but it was worth it. Very limited space and you are elbow to elbow with other customers, but the food is so good that everyone around you is so happy. This place is well run! Had the lobster roll with a side salad (instead of fries). That was the best side salad I've ever had. Huge portion of baby greens, arugula and spinach, with a light lemon dressing, and crunchy pan toasted almonds. Now for that lobster roll because that's the only reason why you're reading this review...one of the best I've ever had! There is a lot of lobster meat. They have it cold with mayo or warm with butter. I wanted something different, so I did the warm butter, very good, but I think I'd do mayo next time. The roll is nice and light and toasted, not too dense because then it would be too heavy for the generous portion of lobster meat piled on top. They have an impressive oyster list as well. I will come here again and again!
(5)Emma J.
Love the food here, but had to wait way too long to get in. go early to get in line, they don't take reservations
(4)Dan H.
I am sure the food is great at Neptune. But they are rather in the mode of a policy that is very hard to engage with and also rather unforgiving in their seating policy. I went there at 5 pm to try to get on time for my wife and I to eat at 6:45. They said it was an hour wait so we should not start waiting. I returned at 5:40 and they then said an hour wait so I went on the waiting list trying to be clear that my wife would arrive at 6:45. They then called at 6:25 to say I had 10 minutes to get to my table or I would lose my spot. So I went back and got to the bottom of the line at 6:30 where they said it would be a 1.5 to 2 hr wait. I get that it is important to work within their constraints for seating but at the same time I think their position of "tough luck" is a major insult to people who are honestly trying hard to work within their constraints. So I will probably eat there tonight in an hour but no matter how good the oysters are... I will still have a bad taste in my mouth from their policies and will likely let everyone know that they have good food but don't really care about their customers until they are seated.

Came on a Wednesday afternoon with my boyfriend, a little after noon. It was a 20 minute wait, which was over almost as soon as we sat down in a cafe down the street for tea. I've seen a lot of reviews complaining about rude staff, maybe I went on a good day? Everyone was polite, just friendly enough without being overbearing. To start we got oysters - Kumamoto, Katama Bay, Browne's, Ichabod - 2 of each. Descriptions on the oyster list were spot on. If you're like me, most of your oyster experiences have probably been the large, flat, salty kind. Get the Kumamoto. It's extremely small, low brine, and oh so creamy. The others were more briny, but very clean tasting and great to eat as well. I highly recommend getting the oysters WITHOUT mignonette or cocktail sauce, as both tend to overpower the oysters. We also got the spanish octopus salad. HUGE chunks of octopus, cooked for a long time till ridiculously tender. The sauce was a bit tart. Vegetables were delightfully sweet. For entrees, we got the cioppino with lobster and the seared scallops. Cioppino was very tasty, with a pleasant spicy kick and a very generous heap of lobster meat (for only $10 more). No idea what fish they had in the stew but there were 2 kinds, and both were cooked to perfection. The prawns and mussels were nothing special. Scallops were perfectly cooked with a nice sear. All the other stuff on the plate - duck confit, blue cheese, brussel sprouts - went together very well. The pear butter was slightly sweet and gave everything a nice refreshing lift. The whole dish was extremely well executed. All in all it came up to roughly $69 each after tip+tax. Well worth every penny. I have to say the oysters set a really high bar and I was worried that the cooked entrees wouldn't measure up, but I'm really happy to say I was worried for nothing!

Sooooo delicious. It is my go- to spot every time I visit Boston. Oysters and lobster roll are perfect.
(5)Davy K.
Fun and lively place to go for oysters! Small though so make a reservation or expect a wait. I definitely am curious to try the other stuff on the menu. But all I had this time were the oysters and the lobster roll. Oysters and the service were great. Even though the lobster roll is good, it wasn't the best I have had. I did appreciate that they were so accommodating with switching out the fries for mixed greens though.

It's been four months since my family and I visited Boston and went to Neptune Oyster. To this day, I still salivate over their lobster roll. As a guy from SF, I wanted to try something unique from Boston. After reading articles from Seriouseats and Thrillist about this place, not to mention the hoard of positive reviews here on Yelp, I decided that Neptune was going to be my choice. Now, I'll freely admit that when it comes to lobster rolls, I'm not an expert. The SF Bay Area has many great restaurants: lots of good seafood places and even a few Michelin-rated ones. But you know what? I will gladly pass on some of these places if it meant getting more of that lobster roll at Neptune. So what is it about their lobster roll? No idea. Maybe it has do with the warm and soft brioche bun, topped with a sizable portion of lobster meat, not to mention all that glorious butter melting into the sandwich. Don't know don't care - just get in my belly! And to complement the lobster roll, we had a nice selection of fresh, raw oysters (amazing in its own right) as well as their clam chowder, which was honestly kind of an afterthought (but really, who the heck cares after you eat that lobster roll). Beers? Yup, they've got a great selection on tap to wash everything down. So now, if you're reading all this, it sounds like maybe Neptune Oyster is perfect, right? Well, not so fast. They don't accept reservations so be prepared to wait. When we went, there was a 3 1/2 hour wait (you get to leave your name and number and they'll call you when it's time for you to make your way back to the restaurant). In addition, the place is small and super crowded. We were situated right next to the front door and so I had the great pleasure of people bumping into me as they tried to pass by, or my favorite, stare at me while we ate. By the way, it's simply astonishing (and kind of amusing) to see how people will try to cut each other off when the hostess tries to take names for the waiting list. C'mon guys - chances are, you're probably not fighting for the last open table that Neptune has; rather, you're fighting for a spot that's probably going to be hours away. But hey, people have their wants and needs. Maybe waiting 2 1/2 hours is okay, but 2 hrs and 45 minutes is just nonsense - I don't know. Anyways, I digress... If you're willing to invest the time and energy to wait it out, then Neptune Oyster is a solid option. I can easily understand why people might not think it's worth the wait and frankly, there's absolutely nothing wrong with thinking that. For me though, is it worth it? The answer is simple: hell yes.

Amazing!!! Best meal that we had in Boston, and perhaps one of my top meals ever! The oyster selection was incredible, and the main courses were simple but delicious. The Johnny Cake is out of this world, sweet pancake with salty caviar and smoked fish, and the lobster roll is the best I have ever had! Worth the wait, but be sure to put your name in early!
(5)Ken T.
Holy lord... two hours wait? If it was anywhere else I'd turn away and say kiss my arse goodbye. But this place is Neptune Oyster. They're smarter than that. Instead of having you wait on-line like every damn restaurant in this world, they'll take your number down and call you 5 minutes before your table is ready. It's a simple concept... but so efficient. The oysters were great. They have a big selection of oysters which might frighten some people but for the non-oyster connoisseurs, there is a small description of the taste, size, and origin of every single oyster on the menu. The clam-chowdah was good, although I wish it was a bit less pricey. And then there's the lobster roll, which was pretty good as well, but also pricey. But who cares about anything else on the menu, you're at Neptune Oyster, why get anything else?

LOVE. Any place where you can say the escargot was amazing, just has to be great. Who ever says that about escargot? No one, until you go to a place that just nails it. Everything else I had was incredible too.

This place is phenomenal. I came here for my birthday and had an amazing time. Don't let the wait scare you. They will take your phone number and call you when your table is ready, so put your name in and walk around the North End. It's worth the wait! We cozied up to the counter and chatted with the very friendly server. We picked out our different types of oysters, got a great recommended bottle of wine, and ate until we couldn't eat anymore. I got the scallops for my main course and they were cooked to perfection. I will definitely be trying the lobster roll next time based on all the recommendations!
(5)Dylan R.
Amazing lobster rolls. Don't eat the french fries though, soggy and not nearly as good. The mussels are also great with the roasted cashew broth. Worth the wait!
(5)Veronica R.
I tried the P.E.i Mussels appetizer on a whim and was blown away. The sauce is out of this world delicious...after slopping it up with the crusty bread they give you, save the rest to dip your fries in. And oh yes I had the warm lobster roll and it truly lived up to the hype!!

I was on a mission to find the best lobstah roll in the northeast coast and the boyfriend did a great job doing his research because we found it! I'm not even going to pretend that I'm a lobster roll connoisseur but I know this is the best I've ever had in my life! They've been featured in many articles recently so even the experts agree. Definitely try to get here early because the restaurant is small and the wait can get very long. We got here around 5pm which is very early for dinner but there was a 45 mins. wait. Luckily, there was an Italian festival going on nearby so we walked over and had some fresh raw little necks and fried clams while we waited. When we got back to the restaurant to be seated, the wait for new customers was 2-3 hours! I mean, the food was amazing but I will never wait 2-3 hours for any food because you just can't really enjoy food when you're hangry. The lobster roll is served two different ways, hot with butter or cold with mayonnaise. We went with hot with butter because I was sharing with my boyfriend and he hates mayonnaise. Lobster roll comes with HUGE chunks of lobster falling out of the roll. We also ordered a bowl of clam chowdah and it was also the best clam chowder I've ever had. Not too creamy and not too soupy either. Normally, I would add tabasco sauce and fresh lemon but I didn't even feel the need to do that because I didn't want to ruin the already perfect taste. This says a lot because I'm always about saucing things up! This was definitely a great northeastern experience. Small and crowded restaurant, loud Bostonians, and very good food. The best meal I had during my entire trip.

I've loved this restaurant for years. The seafood and service used to be top notch. I went again a few weeks ago and the standards have declined. There were shell fragments in my lobster roll and the service is now rude. The waitstaff seem more interested in turning over tables than making sure that diners are satisfied, which seems really greedy when they don't take reservations and the typical wait time for Saturday dinner is 3 hours. Take your money elsewhere, like B&G Oysters.

What an introduction to Boston. Thank you yelp for leading us to this place. We are from Texas so this was my first time to try seafood so close to the ocean! We beat the rush by getting there around 3-4ish. It was a small cute and slightly quaint atmosphere. We shared a lobster roll, clam chowda , and oysters. Wow. Oysters. I am so happy just thinking of those memories. They were exquisite. I enjoyed the sauces a lot. I don't even remember the names. But the paper with the highlights of each helped a lot. The lobster roll was pretty good! My first lobster roll and I wasn't expecting the lobster to be so tough. We tried the buttered. The bread was subpar and could have done without the fries though. The clam chowder was interesting. Very thin and not thick like I was expecting. Not bad. But the clams were yummmmy and generously present.

We've been trying to come to Neptune for, literally, years. Every time we visit Boston we end up in the North End and wander over to see what the line is like, and every time we give up at the thought of a two-hour wait for dinner. This trip, though, we happened to stop by in the late afternoon, put our names in for a 45-minute wait, and in less than 15, were receiving a call back that a table was open. Wow! We returned to the restaurant, and as it turned out, the table wasn't quite open yet -- they assured us we would be more comfortable outside (which I think meant THEY would be more comfortable with us outside) and in a few more minutes we were seated at the bar. Once inside, we understood why the hype was so self-perpetuating. The place is tiny. I counted 14 bar seats and 24 at tables that had, at most, a foot of space between them; some were pushed right next to each other, which must have made for awkward dinner conversation. The bar seating was nice because we got a little more space, but we were all the way at the end, so got to overhear all the personal conversations of the staff members who were coming in and out, arriving for shifts, folding napkins and making after-work plans right in front of us. At the prices we paid, I would have expected a little more professionalism. Our oysters were probably the best I'd ever had: impeccably fresh, briny and sweet, full of the fragrance of the sea. I could have eaten several dozen, but at an average of $3.50 each, we had to stop at six. Their sauces were also amazing -- "cocktail" was real tomato puree with a dollop of real horseradish, which you could swirl together or enjoy apart, and the mignonette was an amazing combination of sparkling red wine, olive oil, shallots and vinegar. I could have eaten it plain, it was that good! The entrees were disappointing after such bliss: my husband liked the lobster roll, but said it was pretty standard -- fresh meat in a light mayo dressing on a toasted bun. (I tried a bite, but lobster is not really my thing, so I'm going with his opinion.) My sardine salad was beautiful, but there were a number of problems: the meat, which was perfectly grilled and tasty, was surrounded by tiny bones that had to be removed painstakingly. It's a good thing I wasn't starving or I would have been very frustrated. I love sardines, but wished for a pair of tweezers to properly enjoy them. The salad was clearly organic, so much so that it was gritty from not having been properly washed. The dressing was bright with lemon juice, but overwhelmed the salad -- I couldn't finish it as it was so acidic it had wilted the greens and was threatening to do the same to my tastebuds! Would I come back? IF we hit that magical time when the wait is under half an hour, and if I had enough cash to properly enjoy a full serving of oysters, absolutely. For dinner, no. You can do a lot better for a lot less in the North End.

Voted the best restaurant, we had to try it out. Placed name and number and told about 2.5 hours since they only have 24 seats. They never called so we went back and some others were seated the same time we were and they only waited 1 hour. We tried oysters, and got a few different ones to sample. For those who didn't get oysters, their food came right out. Because we ordered oysters, we ended up waiting 30 minutes for the oysters and then another 10-15 for our food. We ordered the hot lobster roll and the clambake. The clambake is seasonal price came out to 55 dollars. Our bill 150 for the night. Not the cheapest but we can say we did visit. The food quality is high and fresh with the clambake but the hot lobster roll I am not sure it was as fresh tasting lobster. I am not sure if it was worth the wait. Oh you are also so cramped and hot it is hard to enjoy the meal. You can't get in and out of your seat very easily, and there's one bathroom for all.
(3)Kim N.
The lobster roll is so amazing!! The best I have ever tried!! The raw bar was great but my boyfriend food was good but nothing special
(4)Elise L.
I came to here under a suggestion from my friend. There was no reservation for this place and we had to wait in line for it. The good thing about this restaurant is that we can just dropped down our names and they would call us when it was our turn. We ordered mussel, 5 different kinds of oysters and one clam. I had mussels in many different places, so I would say the difference in this place as opposed to other restaurants was that it made some sort of spicy creamy sauce. I don't quite like seafood in spicy sauce, since I think most of time, we want to taste the freshness of the seafood itself. I would prefer to have a light white wine sauce for the mussels instead. In terms of the oysters, we got cotuit, beausoleil, summerside, kumamoto and kusshi.... I like the last three the best, since they tastes sweet... I don't have a special opinion for Cotuit, but Beausoleil is the way that tastes a little bit bitter.... I am not a fan of bitter oyster, so I will leave the opinion to others. The one last dish that changed my opinion to this restaurant was the tangy lobster spaghetti with truffle. I am totally hands down to the plate. Love lobsters, one of my best seafood....The spaghetti keeps the fresh and sweet taste of lobster. They cooked spaghetti for the right length of time, making each noodle very chewy. They put many pieces of Truffle on top of the Spaghetti, giving the dish a mushroomy, earthy and meaty taste. Truffle not only increased the taste of the dish, but also the scent when I smelled it... It is such a brilliant idea to add it to the spaghetti, but it definitely raises the price of the dish... But I would say, it worth the money.

This is the first time I have to give negative comments on yelp. Almost think this is a tourist trap.Me and my husband have waited for three hours to eat lunch in this "probably most famous" restaurant in Boston. We ordered one dozen oysters and six pieces of cherrystones as the starters and one lobster roll with mayonnaise as the entrée. when we got the lobster roll we just thought the mayonnaise was already on the lobster cause yesterday we ate the lobster sandwich in other restaurant they did so. But when we almost finished the roll, we saw the table next to us had a plate of mayonnaise separately which means they never gave us the sauce. That's the fist thing I wanna complain about. The second thing to complain is that there were a lot of lobster shells in the roll that we have to spit out when we eatï¼The third thing is when we finished the roll, the oysters and cherrystones still not served. We had to ask the waitress, but I thought she was too rude to tell us we can cancel the oysters she also told us if we want the oysters be served first we can tell the waitress in advance. That's so ridiculous that every restaurant should know the starters come before the entrees!!!!!!! I will not recommend this restaurant to any of my friends.

There is literally nothing better in life than the lobster roll. Get a salad with it though, the included fries are a bit too much for one meal.
(5)Louise S.
We loved this little spot - had oysters, shrimp cocktail, and shared a hot buttery lobster roll. Every customer accompanied their meal with a pilsner, so we did too. Very happy. You'll wait an hour for your table, but they call you when it's ready. So just plan to spend an hour roaming the neighborhood.
(5)Greg T.
Buddy recommended we check this place out. Definitely worth the wait. Was told it was going to be an hour or so, so we left our name and number with the waitress responsible for taking down names (btw, she had very good handwriting) and hopped over to Vito's for a Brick Red while we waited. Got a call about an hour later and ended up at the bar near the back. Our bartender/waitress Adriana was the best. Asked us what to drink. I had a beer in mind but asked her what she would suggest. She picked the exact one that I was thinking of so that's a good sign. We had a dozen oysters to start off with and they were very fresh and delicious. They had both East and West Coast oysters, but we picked all East Coast. Next up was the clam chowder. Adriana said they do their clam chowder a little different as it is a little more runny that most restaurants. It was a little weird at first but it was so delicious. I think it not being so thick made it less heavy. Finally, we talk about the main course, the lobster roll. As much as I like mayo, Adriana recommended taking it hot, with melted butter. She hasn't steered me wrong so far, so I went with it. What a sandwich and came with a large serving of fries. By golly, what a game changer. They did not skimp on the lobster. I took a few of pieces off the top and there was plenty left. The bread made the difference as well. It was sturdy enough to hold all that hot buttered lobster in without falling apart, but it was soft enough to where I don't break my jaw trying to chew through it. In summary, long wait, but worth it!
(5)Alec G.
Hands down this is the best place to go for oysters in the city. They're fresh, the variety is second to none, the only thing I wish, is that the place was a little bigger. Not much, but just big enough so that the tables aren't so cramped together. Worth the line to get in, worth the price.
(5)R A.
Way too much hype. Gave our name and number. It took 2 hours for a phone call that our table was ready. The food was delicious but was it worth the wait? Absolutely not. There are fabulous other seafood restaurants in the city.
(3)Rebecca J.
It's no secret that Neptune has the best oysters and oyster selection as well as the most amazing lobster roll in Boston. Often there is a wait, but it is worth it.
(5)Ed D.
Very nice meal at the bar. Bartender/waiter was very accommodating and friendly but let you enjoy your meal. Hot buttered lobster roll with fries was fantastic!!!
(4)Michael K.
The wait is unreal. Four hours is typical for dinner on a weekend. Luckily you can put your name down and leave your cell #, but it still requires some pre-planning. Head there a few hours early, put your name down, and explore North End/grab a drink somewhere else while you wait. When you finally get in, it will be packed and pretty loud, but you will be rewarded with amazing oysters and an excellent lobster roll that will rank among the best you've ever had. I preferred the hot lobster roll with butter. I've only been here once and don't plan on coming back anytime soon because I'm lazy, but if you're a foodie it's a must-try. Five stars if I didn't have to wait an eternity to eat there.
(4)Yifan L.
Reservation system is a disaster. Waiters are arrogant. Oyster is great, rest of the menu is mediocre, far from phenomenal, although you are charged as if so. The main reason there is always a line is nothing but they can only fit 15 people dine in at a time.
(2)Michael F.
Eh...good...not sure I'd go back. The oysters and clams were good, but the clam chowder was a little too thin and milky. I like my chowdah chunky and thick. Also, don't come here if you're in a hurry-- the wait is AT LEAST 2 hours. Fortunately, there are tons of places in North End to get a drink while you wait. The place is tiny, the food is ok, and the waitstaff is very friendly. Worth trying once, but I wouldn't go again.
(3)Ronald D.
Best lobster roll on the whole trip..... and I tried every lobster roll I could find from Boston to Portland with stops in Gloucester, Rockport, Kennebunkeport and several no name stops as well. As stated by others, because it's a small space and popular, you will have to wait - so go in with a strategy. Get there knowing you will have to kill at least an hour, then go to the hostess, provide your name, she in turn will take your phone number and give you the approximate wait time..... and then go walk and explore the north end. (Do not hover at the front door, they will admonish you a send you away.) Depending upon the amount of time you have to kill, you can walk to the Old North Church which is the location from which the famous "One if by land, and two if by sea" signal is said to have been sent. Or do as we did, just plop down next door at Rabia's and drink good wine.
(5)Mark W.
First you need to know I'm rural south Texan, so what do I know about Atlantic seafood? But the best way to approach the Neptune is to put your name in at least 1 1/2 hours before you want to eat and then settle in at a bar nearby with a full bottle of wine to tide you over. They will call when they are ready. Just don't get there after 6:30. We started with oysters since they offered a choice of twelve varieties. In a fine restaurant back home you might get three to choose from. And I always worry they will be too large for one bite. (You know you just don't want to cut one up--too graphic.) But at Neptune they were too small; just barely a taste, but the sauces were very good. My wife had the hamburger topped with fried oysters--quite good, and enough for two seniors. I chose the hot lobster roll--also enough for both of us. It was my second one of a lifetime, but did not compare favorably to the one I had on the side of a Maine highway some years ago. Sorry, Neptune, you just weren't worth the wait.

As I traverse with my friends in the city of Boston up on the north end side, man I've gotten this intense craving for a unique sandwich of a particular well known special dish highly recommended and with the homies they say the best one here, you know me I dare to try the best lobster roll at this historical city - here we go pretty good is truly an understatement at neptune oyster, this is a statement that this place sets the standard for all lobster rolls out there to soar into greatness and pure excitement the big chunks of lobster, beyond decent with the butter, dash of pepper, a complement to the sandwich roll to wrap all of it into a complete package of a wonderful taste that makes the gods envious up to date plus the french fries have a nice crisp good amount of salt and pepper, what a bliss I couldn't get enough of the fries as well as I took some more from another friend, I tell 'ya that he couldn't finish, so he offered as I can't stop thinking about the roll, it furthered the fact that I wish I had another one right then but one was enough. satisfying - once again if you're in Boston, this is a definite must try even though the wait was quite long, no lie we put our name down at four fifteen pm they told us that at eight fourty five pm we'll have the table then, but that's all good we wanted to walk around the neighborhood to explore the north end, bunker hill and all that and the USS Constitution like a couple of jazz cats the wait isn't a big deal, definitely give this a shot you won't regret this lobster roll, definitely not.
(5)SL S.
I ate here recently and the group of people I was with had a good dinner. When it came to my dinner I just ordered appetizers and that turned out to be the best thing because the place was very busy and probably waiting too long might not worked for me. I ordered wine for everyone and we all enjoyed our dining experience. I'll definitely be back.
(4)Sheska O.
A couple of suggestions: 1. Go on a Monday. 2. Get there early. 3. Get the Monday special (Lobster Spaghetti) and a WARM Lobster Roll. 4. Enjoy.
(5)Su L.
2 hour wait, no reservation policy. No.
(1)Carlo L.
We-a party of three-waited on line, to put our name down, next to another who put their name down an hour earlier with no inkling of a check in from staff. A few moments in, a group of two or three white Bostonian men cut in front of us all and put their name down with a staffwoman. She looked around for availability, gave them the pointer finger up asking them to wait, and asked them to close the door that those of us waiting in line were keeping open. Thanks for the diligence and care in the service you offer. I love oysters and all forms of seafood, but I will not be supporting Neptune until they #dobetter.
(1)Eric D.
Best lobster roll I've had in Boston. I went to Yankee Lobster the night before, and this one beats it. It's $8 more, but it's so good. 2.5 hour wait, so make plans to go have drinks before dinner. The oysters are solid too.
(5)Edward W.
Amazing and completely worth the hype, but be prepared to wait 45 min to 2 hours depending on when you get there since there aren't any reservations. If you're a tourist then you can blow off some time at the nearby Quincy Market, Boston Harbor, or Aquarium. They had a wide selection of oysters, and I tried 5 different kinds. Of them all, I preferred the ones with less salt and with a nutty/ fruity finish. The ones at the top of the list were too salty for my taste and overpowered every other flavor. Overall, I enjoyed them. The uni toast was very, very good. Two slices of bread with a generous spread of sea urchin butter = party in your mouth. This one was well worth the money. And the lobster rolls. Everything that could be said about it has already been said by others. Large chunks of lobster drizzled with butter between soft bread. I ordered it hot, and it was easily the best thing by far. My only regret is that it ruined all other lobster rolls for me. Would and will definitely come back again.
(4)Alice D.
Okay so... wow. Came home to the coast for 2 weeks this summer with one thing on my food agenda: get a bomb enough lobster roll to hold me over for a year. So when we got to Neptune and they told us it'd be a 2.5 hour wait, I scoffed at my parents who said "let's just get some Italian!" We put our name in and killed time- got apps at the old Union Oyster House, walked through Quincy Market, walked the labyrinth on Rose Kennedy Greenway (north of the carousel), and sat at the harbor for a bit. We got a call from Neptunes after 2 hours and excitedly hurried over. We got the tuna tartar which was refreshing and VERY salty (but in the best way possible). Then for the lobster rolls. We got two hot ones and a cold one... The cold one was like OH MY THIS IS YUM and the hot one was HOLY $&*% MY MIND IS BLOWN. Think warm, tender, buttery, flavorful melt-in-your-mouth goodness. My mom loled at me and my dad, who both closed our eyes while chewing. It's that good. Go now!!
(5)Bill G.
Fantastic. Make sure you have some time, put your name in and do some sight-seeing around the North End and come back for a fantastic lobster roll.
(4)Sam C.
Neptune definitely lived up to the hype. The food is basic. Most of it is raw seafood, so they don't need to have much technique in their food. The advantage that they have is the freshness, and you can really taste it in their food. Oysters were huge and delicious as were the clams. EVERYONE. should have a Neptune's lobster roll at least once in their life.
(4)Brian S.
We hoofed it over to this place on Tue June 16 and got here at 430pm. Party of 4. NO WAIT. Let me repeat that. NO WAIT. Place was full just after 5. Food: Ordered the hot lobster roll. It was delish and massively rich. Others ordered steak (go figure) and some clams. Drinks: Wines by the glass were good. There was a good selection and the waitress seemed to know her wines. Pours were average. Overall: The food was good. Service was good, not rushed. Place is crammed of course - get used to the concept of a community table (we sat at a table for 6 so as the place filled up another couple sat at the open part of the table). It is pricey. I suppose if you are a clam aficionado then you must come here. I'm glad we came here, but honestly if I had to wait more than an hour I'd go elsewhere.
(4)Heaven R.
Stumbled upon this precious gem by accident walking around the North End. We went on a Wednesday night and it was packed. Made reservations for two at 5:30...didn't sit down until 7:30. Worth the wait!!! We order the lobster roll and the scallops. OMG! YUM! And the tuna tartar was to die for. I wish we lived in Boston, I would come here as much as I could afford to. :) The food and atmosphere were perfect. The service however was out of this world. ANN....was exceptional. The was the final piece to the puzzle. I hope she reads this review. Thanks Ann!!! Neptune's is a must for eating out in Boston.
(5)Holly G.
Freshest oysters and littlenecks I've ever had in my life. The wait was long but I would say it's definitely worth waiting to experience this place. Lobster was delicious as well.
(5)Donna J.
Best lobster roll ever! If you happen to go during the work week and off hours you are more likely to get seated right away. I fell in love with oysters thanks to this place!
(5)Janet H.
Neptune Oyster: The Holy Grail of Lobster Rolls! My friends and I got here on Wednesday at 5:45pm... which led to a TWO hour wait! The restaurant is super tiny. Eventually, the restaurant stops taking names and turn people away. We sat right next to the door, so the server would tell the bad news that they're no longer adding people to the list. It's quite entertaining, actually -- seeing different reactions: anger, disappointment, and there's also the bribery ("Can you pleeease seat me! I have my luggage and I'm visiting out of town!"). Getting turned away here is just like a doctor sharing terrible news or something... seriously. Oh yeah. This place doesn't accept reservations! Anywho, onto the food review... 1. Lobster Roll: must get. So buttery, heavenly, and droolworthy. I totally devoured my lobster roll. They're also quite generous with the fries, which were crispy and yummy too. 2. Cioppino: They added a twist to their Cioppino. It was super spicy! Pretty good, but not as good as the lobster roll. 3. Clam chowder: Solid. 4. Oysters: Good selection... not a huge oyster person... In the end, I was totally stuffed and happy. Haha, I probably wouldn't come here again because I wouldn't want to wait 2 hours again. If you're in the area though, it's a rite of passage!
(5)Hao L.
wonderful experience.

Neptune Oyster showed me what I have been missing all my life: fresh, delicious oysters! Before Neptune Oyster, I swore that I did not like oysters at all. I really did not understand why this slimy texture and fishy smell thing is considerably tasty. Also, it really did not help that I got food poison from them. I avoided oysters for years and years until my visit here. True story! Neptune Oyster was the last stop before my party head home to New York City. My party arrived here shortly before 11:00 am; just about 30 minutes before they open for business. We were first on line that day! My party ordered a variety of food such as the clam chowder, lobster roll, uni toast, and of course oysters. We also have Bellini to add a touch to our brunch experience! Uni Toast came out first. It was two slices of hot toasted bread with a bit of uni spread and melted butter. I personally did not taste much of the uni but more so the melted butter. It was okay but wish there was more uni! Lobster Roll, you have a choice to having it hot and toasty or just normal temperature. We went for the hot version as evident as the grilled, charred marks on the bread. Lobster Roll looks a bit stingy from the lack of lobster meat but it was actually a lot of meat packed in the middle section. Pretty good but high on the price mark. Fries that came with the lobster roll was crispy and well seasoned. My party loved the hints of potato skins here and there on the fries! Now the highlight of our visit: the oysters! Every table was given a sheet of paper that lists the oysters that they have including the place of origin, price, and taste notes. All you need to do is write the number of pieces you want. My party went with a few popular ones such as the Island Creek, Wellfleet, Kumamoto, Hog Island, Pemaquid, and etc. Little bit of each. Oysters were served in a platter sitting on ice. Pemaquid Oyster from Damariscotta, Maine reigned as my party's favorite! Pemaquid had tasting notes of salty and citrus. My party just simply squeezed lemons without adding any additional sauces. It was freakin' AWESOME! We even ordered another dozen of Pemaquid as well afterwards! Even after the restaurant, I really could not stop thinking about the taste of it! I am a person who loves salty and sour. If you have the same taste, get the pemaquid! Who knew I would eat oysters for brunch?! It was totally worth it!

The food is so fresh and so good I still have to give it 4 stars even though the attitude of the place is so atrocious it would get a minus 4 star rating. So be prewarned when u go there. You'll be treated just like they don't need or want u there cause they don't. The place is small and busy like you can't believe. BUT if you want some of the best oysters and other seafood you might ever have then go here and just bite your lip when you get the attitude especially from the guy at the door taking names and doing the seating. He needs a vacation waaay too uptight.

Neptune always has a wait but they keep track of their list and will text/call as soon as a table is open. We ordered the tuna tartar to start. It was good but it would have been nice to have a little extra avocado with it. No such thing as too much avocado! There was a TON of tuna. We also ordered the mussels and they were enormous. Great appetizer. We also ordered the squid ink risotto with lobster. There was a decent amount of lobster in the dish but the risotto was undercooked so the rice was a little too hard. It was fine overall but I definitely prefer squid ink pasta (daily catch) over the risotto from Neptune. Service was good and the food was worth the wait.
(4)Peter D.
Got the lobster roll and was above average. Great portion compared to what you expect to get, not too much mayo and good texture. I've had a ton of other lobster rolls and this is among the best but would stop short of saying the best ever, especially concerning the wait and price. If you're able to get in great, otherwise there is probably comparable lobster rolls elsewhere.

Heard it's a must-try spot when you are in Boston. Waited for an hour and half to finally get a spot at the bar. We ordered some oyster and their famous lobster roll. The oysters were AMAZING! They were so fresh and tasty, I think that was the best oysters I have ever had. As for lobster roll, it was actually just good, I expected a better lobster roll from somewhere is famous for it. And for $28, I don't think I will order lobster roll again, but definitely oyster! The bartender was nice and friendly. The restaurant is always packed, and they don't take reservation, so get there early to have your name on their waiting list, and find a bar at North End to chill before a nice and big meal! Can't wait to go back! :)
(4)Cathy W.
Love this place. Everyone goes here for the lobster roll (which is amazing), but my favorite dish is the North End Cioppino.
(5)Sandra A.
Oh so good!
(5)Andrew B.
Best lobster roll in town, they said. 3 hour and 45 minute wait, they said. They were right, it was the best; and they were right, the wait was 3:46. The roll was fairly small and 28 bucks. So decide yourself if it's worth it to spend 28 and three hours, or go somewhere else where it's 14 and three minutes. I wouldn't go back, but that's a damn good sandwich.
(4)Marc D.
Lobster rolls and oysters are great. Very small place though. Hard to get a table unless you go at 2:30 on Sunday afternoon
(4)Ruth C.
OMGOMG AMAZING AMAZING!! What else can I say that hasn't been said? Get the lobster roll. With fries. Also get the salad. And a glass of rosé. Or two. DO IT. I will be back to try the specials.
(5)Miriam S.
Yum!! This place doesn't need any more reviews - just put you name on the list, keep yourself entertained in the neighborhood, and then enjoy the heck out of a butter lobster roll. Their oysters were also delicious and their chowder is really thin but extremely flavorful and yummy.
(5)Axel W.
Great place. Worth waiting in line!
(4)Julia T.
Their clam chowder is the best. Admittedly a bit runny, but that's how I prefer mine to be. It was seasoned very well and a great start to dinner. I'd go as far as saying this is the one thing I'll order next time if I'm back here and only had 10 bucks to spend. I also ordered the hot lobster roll with butter and fries, and my friend ordered their mussels. To be honest, I enjoyed his mussels more than my lobster roll. I'm sure Neptune makes great lobster rolls, but it may be just be I didn't see the appeal in them. The lobster roll was a bit bland and felt out of place with the petite soft dinner roll. Perhaps if they had gone with a different type of bread (sourdough or white) toasted it, and seasoned the lobster better, the overall dish would have been tastier. The server also gave me a small card with available fresh oysters they had. If you have a preference for salty or light oysters, let your server know and he/she will gladly help with your choices. My friend and I lucked out on wait time on a Friday night. By the time we left, the line for a table was out the door on a cold Boston night. Definitely come early if you don't want to have to brave the wait, and come with a small party (less than 4) if you're hoping for a table together. Dining here makes me feel like I'm in the Big Apple again, with tables squeezed really close together and diners sitting almost elbow to elbow. Because of that, it gets really loud inside as everyone is trying to raise his or her voice to drown out the noise from their neighbors right next to their elbows. I didn't drive in Boston (you really don't need to with their great public transportation system), so I have no idea how parking works.
(4)Alex L.
This place is absolutely INCREDIBLE! This place is small and there's usually a pretty long wait. I waited about an 1 hour for a table but it was so worth it! The waitress (Tiffany) was so nice to me I thought she was in my family. I ordered a lobster roll and a platter of oysters. The lobster roll came out first steaming hot. Just the smell alone was amazing. And I came to this restaurant AFTER I had already had 3 pieces of pizza. When I took a bite of the lobster roll I suddenly felt hungry for lobster. It was buttered perfectly and the bread was great to. After I thought it couldn't get any better they brought out the oysters. Now I don't particularly eat oysters that much but I thought I would try some. These were by FAR the best oysters I had ever tasted. I gulped down every single one. Overall I thought this was probably the BEST seafood spot in Boston.
(5)Jeff L.
The line at Neptune Oyster can be dauntingly/intimidatingly long, certainly on weekends, but even on weekdays. I've frequently seen it stretch all the way down Salem out to Cross Street, sometimes including tourists who have yet to even drop off their luggage. And for good reason. Neptune Oyster is certainly one of the very best seafood restaurants in the city. A trip to the new DMV at Haymarket to get my license renewed on a weekday in May gave me the perfect opportunity to try to hit Neptune on the early side. Upon arrival, I was quoted a 15-20 minute wait for a spot at the bar, which was absolutely fine. Within minutes, others were being quoted 45 minutes to an hour, and I've heard of people being quoted 6 hour wait times. Thankfully, the host understands that this would otherwise be untenable so they allow you to leave your number and will call you. On a previous visit, I was at Wine Bottega when I got my call and came sprinting back to claim my spot. It was totally worth the exercise. Anyway we were seated at a bar overlooking the large storefront window on Salem, giving us a perfect view of the oysters as well as the opportunity to photobomb the tourist groups mugging for photos outside! While it can be noisy, festive, and a bit chaotic inside Neptune because of the tiny space and the tile walls/floor which seem to amplify the sound, service is consistently attentive and friendly. They seem to know they've got a good thing going, and that you probably deserve some good will for having waited a while to get in. We started with beer and some perfectly shucked oysters, and proceeded to enjoy the Johnnycake, the special pasta of the day (was the only thing that disappointed), and finally the hot buttered lobster roll. The johnnycake has smoked trout and sturgeon caviar and was not something I would have ordered had it not been for multiple servers insisting that I do so. The savory trout and caviar matched perfectly with the sweetness of the johnnycake. It's so good, and a must have every time I'm there. I've enjoyed the hot lobster roll more than the cold lobster salad roll, although both are very good. Perhaps it's a matter of preference, but few places in Boston seem to do it hot. Overall, if you're willing to wait a while or are lucky enough to go at opening or during blizzard or a Pats game (they don't seem to have a TV), Neptune Oyster always hits the spot. It's worth a trip to the North End, and there are so many other things to walk around and see, the wait won't seem that bad once you're inside.
(4)Flo O.
"6 stars" for the food, one star off from the super long wait and one start off from the mediocre service.
(4)Stephanie C.
Fantastic oysters and, as someone who does not like mayo, the warm lobster roll is perfect! Plan on getting drinks at a nearby bar while you wait and checking back often to make sure you are there when your table is called.
(5)Mike C.
Super long wait usually, but super worth it! The best in the city for oysters.
(5)Michelle T.
Completely worth the hype and the anticipation. People told me to expect a ridiculous wait but I got in line at 1045 on a Sunday and I got in with the first seating. Shortly after though I heard them telling people the wait was 2 hours so the key is to get there and stand in line at least 30 mins before they open. I had half dozen oysters, the lobster rolls, clam chowder, and the uni toast. The oysters were great wish they served it with a mignonette though. The clam chowder was ok, I wish it was thicker but the clams were very fresh in it. The uni toast was rich and luxurious. But the highlight was definitely the lobster roll. The bread was so soft and pillowy. It was stuffed with a generous portion of sweet lobster meat and butter. I had the roll warm, so amazing. It was served with a side of freshly fried French fries. I love the movie The Town and the only thing missing was Ben Affleck next to me.....
(5)M R.
A staple for my wife and I who celebrate our Anniversary here virtually every year. Though the lack of reservations or even true call ahead can be a bit of a logistical headache, the food is worth it. Excellent oysters and lobster rolls, a great selection of wines and a friendly and knowledgeable staff.
(4)Yisi L.
Went on a solo trip, no wait on a Tuesday afternoon. It was super packed - the wait for a table must be long; bars seats were easier. I don't find the atmosphere to be romantic or good for family; maybe with fewer people it will work! My purpose is simple: to get fed. Ordered the hot lobster roll with salad ($28 before tax). The roll was much bigger than in the picture. Fresh and meaty. The salad came in generous size but the dressing was a little too salty to my taste.
(4)X Z.
This is a restaurant that uses premium ingredients, has average service in a cramped space, and does not take reservations resulting in long wait times. The fabled lobster roll is worth the wait. I tried the hot version with butter and Iggy's brioche, which was exceptional and fairly priced at $ 28 dollars. The fries were surprisingly excellent for a seafood place. We had also tried the Monday special (lobster spaghettini) clocking in at $ 38 dollars. Although it was excellent, not sure I would pay that again for a single dish. There is nothing that is innovative about the cuisine - it is simply excellent quality ingredients that are well-prepared. Overall, I would go here more frequently, but the lack of reservation system with resultant long wait times is prohibitive.
(4)Tyler A.
On a standard summer weekend you gotta get there early before they open and stand in line, as the place is relatively small and hits max capacity within minutes of opening with people who waited, otherwise you should expect a lengthy wait (although they take your number and allow for you to roam the North End). Granted I've only had the lobster roll while in there, it blew me away. Great portion size, not pocket busting prices. Having taken people there frequently they've never seemed disappointed in the oysters they have on hand. Sure you can get lobster rolls anywhere in Boston basically, but you have to give this place a try, you won't be let down. Awesome selection of wines, and have some beer options with Harpoon on tap. Definitely a Boston spot one must embark on.
(5)Luke H.
Waited over 90 minutes to be seated (put name on list at 730 pm, was seated about 915 pm). Place is extremely small. Oysters on half shell were a disappointment (very salty - and I mean very). Crab claw was very small and disappointing for a $5 appetizer. Shrimp cocktail is very solid. Thought the evening was a bust until....the lobster roll and fries arrived. The lobster roll was awesome and totally made me forget the long wait and salty oysters.....do yourself a favor and get the lobster roll.......it is money.
(4)Angela D.
Came here with my family around 6:30pm and was told that it would be a 4 hour wait. A 4 hour wait!?!?!? I've never been quoted such a long wait time! We decided to wait since I've been wanting to come here for forever. We did some bar hopping whilst waiting for our reservation. We were called around 8:50pm and they said our table would be ready in about 15 minutes. Nice! Early! Anyway, we were really excited to get seated and we proceeded to order lots of food. We got the clam chowder ($11), fried clams, 2 oysters, cioppino ($29), and two lobster rolls ($27). The clam chowder was really good. Not too thick, but still nice and creamy. The fried clams were incredible! The best I've ever had. The cioppino was meh. It was really pricey and wasn't all that great. The famous lobster rolls had a great lobster flavor and were super buttery, but they were also really chewy! That was a disappointment. Overall, the service was great, the food was great, but it's really expensive and the wait is beyond ridiculous. However, I'm glad I got to try it!
(3)Kevin B.
Best oyster selection in Boston period. Place is always packed and you will probably be on a 2 hour wait list for a seat at the bar (especially if it is on a weekend). Honestly, that is the problem with this place. It is such a touristy spot now, that you can't just sit down and have a few oysters and drinks at the bar. What is the point of having an oyster bar that you can't get oysters at without waiting 2 hours? You can walk 30 feet down the road and get almost as good of an oyster at Rabia...almost. Place would be 5 stars, but it just isn't a place you can get oysters at anymore.
(4)Leena C.
The food is delicious!!! The seafood is so fresh and their wine list is great despite being such a small restaurant. They don't take reservations but you can put your name down and they will call you when your table is ready...sometimes the wait is extremely long!
(4)Emilia L.
Everyone, and I mean EV-EH-RY one we spoke to about Boston said we HAD to come here, so I made it a goal to have lunch here our second full day in Boston. I knew they opened at 11:30 am, so I made sure we zipped on over after touring the Paul Revere House in North End (they are very close to one another, just a few streets over). We arrived outside the restaurant at about 10:50 am or so, and we were NOT the first ones in line. So it's not so crazy that you have to show up an hour before or anything, but I would recommend coming by 30-40 minutes before opening to ensure you get a seat as soon as it opens, because Neptune has very limited seating. They actually opened the doors past 11:30, which was slightly annoying, but oh well. We were seated, drink orders were taken quickly, and we set to ordering our lunch. You can order oysters via a paper menu similar to the ones you see at sushi restaurants. The oyster menus containing a description of every oyster they have, so you just list the number of oysters you'd like by each one on the list. I can't even remember what we ordered exactly, but we ordered two each of six different varieties to create a dozen. I do remember they were all East Coast oysters, of course. They had a couple of West Coast varieties (one of them being the delicious kumamoto) but seeing as we were in Boston, we stuck with East. I remember not liking only one out of the bunch, because I just found it too briny. We also shared a bowl of the clam chowder. Ehh, not too memorable. It was quite thin and I like my chowder thicker. For entrees, we shared the Seared Georges Bank Scallops and the Maine Lobster Roll (hot). Food came out relatively quickly considering how packed the place was. Guess it helps to have a specially curated, but small menu. Most people tend to order the lobster roll, anyway. The lobster roll was not too heavy on the butter, which I liked. It allowed me to taste the lobster meat better. Fries were super tasty, nicely crisped, not too potato-ey. I also really enjoyed the scallops. The duck confit added an interesting element to the flavor that I had never experienced before. The scallops were served with the tiniest Brussels sprouts I had ever seen. They were like the size of the tip of my finger (OK, not a helpful comparison, but TINY. Much smaller than your standard size marble for sure). It was a seriously satisfying meal. We got to walk a bit of it off by exploring North End a little more!
(5)Taylor V.
Went because of the reviews! It wasn't my type of chowder. Very thin liquid and very fancy place. Try Atlanitic Fish Co for some great clam chowder.
(3)David P.
Place is awesome if you can deal with the 2-3 hour wait time. If you want to eat here, come here first and put your name in. They will take your cell number and call you when you're up so you can go stroll around little Italy for a while while you wait. Chowder is epic, oysters are great.
(5)Shay D.
Best lobster roll! Also recommend the appetizer with the octopus that was delish!! But get there at 1130 am to write your name or you will never eat here!
(5)Ryan S.
What is there to say that other reviews haven't covered? It's the best, come here, you won't be disappointed.
(5)Charlie B.
Great quality / a bit pricy but worth it if you love shellfish - but the wait is a major pain in the a**. Food is a 5 / price and the wait drags it down.
(3)Jamie S.
Damn, I really wanted to NOT like this place because I couldn't bear the thought of not getting in or waiting for 2 hours on a Friday when I really really craved it but it was hands down the best lobster roll I've ever had in Boston / the Boston, cape and islands area. My husband and I ordered the cold and hot and split them in half and shared them. I usually don't like lobster tail and prefer the claw because I find it tender. The lobster was cooked so perfectly that every bite, claw or tail melted in your mouth the way lobster should.
(4)Greg M.
Not worth the wait (I waited 70 min for one spot at the bar for a Monday lunch). For as pricey as it is, nothing was worth the cost. The anchovy cocktail was good and worth the $15, but it wasn't anything new for me. The guy next to me had fried oysters. I had a few. They were definitely under-seasoned and not worth the price. I got the vitello tonnato sandwich as a main. I was underwhelmed. I was expecting juicy pieces of veal and raw tuna. It was somewhat bland and not at all worth $19. The tuna and veal were so finely chopped that I almost tasted nothing. It's a cool place and fun, but it's not worth the price if you're expecting extreme freshness and uniqueness. If you're a tourist,...then you might like it.
(3)Suzanne O.
Always fabulous. The food is phenomenal and the oysters... to die for! Try the lobster roll with drawn butter.
(5)jay h.
Great Experience. It would be much nicer if they took reservations and stayed open a little longer. Highly recommend.
(5)Kalypso C.
Service wasn't good but the food was excellent. Defiantly get the hot butter lobster roll! Be ready to wait at least a few hours to get in. Get a reservation and walk around till they call because they have very slow service.
(4)Dennis S.
Great place, super fresh seafood, and everyone knows what their talking about! The reason I don't give it five stars is its sooo small, super loud, and you are literally eating on top of each other! Please please please open another location in the waterfront PLEEEASE
(4)Jane Y.
Such a nice place! It's famous for reasons! Value for waiting. To begin with fresh Oysters, clams and crabs. Such amazing flavor. Then tried claimed soup and grilled salad. Had famous lobster roll and seafood cioppino as main courses! Such a wonder lunch with my Miami friends! Since they do not take any reservations. We waited a hour for lunch, its defiantly worth for it!
(4)Ramon R.
Delicious. (very) Intimate. Worth a visit-- but know that you will you probably wait for a seat...and do not even try driving there (cycle, skate, walk, uber or T!) The food is on point, well above your average Boston restaurant. A bit pricey but not in comparison to other nearby eateries. Share a lobster roll, share a steak, eat some oysters, get something green, order a few drinks...go to sleep for a very long time. Solid choice.
(4)Dan Q.
The only thing I can say about Neptune Oyster us they have the best lobster roll I've ever eaten. I was lucky having come early enough (4:30) to be seated quickly. I can understand why people wait but admit I'm glad I did not have to. The quality to price ratio is super high. Although not cheap for a lobster roll, the quality far superseded If you like rolls and happen to find yourself in Boston I highly recommend you try.
(5)Debbie F.
Strike 1: Requested a cot at the point of the reservation, at the point of check in and then 4 hours later. Just to be told there wasn't one available and its first come first serve. I would expect a month advance would be enough. Strike 2: The front desk never called back when I called at 10 PM about the cot, and was hung up on when I called twice after. Strike 3: When I went down to the front desk, Solomon was rude and also called me a liar. Said i was never hung up on. Strike 4: I was charged $44 for a bus trip I never took.
(1)Paul W.
Best Lobster roll I've ever had, no question. I think that was the most well prepared lobster i've ever had and probably the best fries anywhere. WOW
(5)Richard L M.
Excellent raw bar and seafood. The best Lobster roll you'll ever have. The oysters are as fresh here as I've ever had anywhere, and they are served perfectly, with no grit, and plenty of liquor. I'd been unable to get in for a long time, mostly because they don't take reservations, and by the time I can get there to sign up for a table, the entire evenings been claimed. I had a free afternoon and was able to get in and try the Lobster Nicoise -- incredibly delicious and low carb. Basically a salad with a lb plus of lobster meat (the best parts: claw and tail). I added the Uni Toast, and was stuffed. And happy!
(5)Asonya R.
This little place is packed you must wait outside but worth it. Great service in spite of its none stop madness. Great selection of oysters and the hot buttered lobster roll is full and stuffed with lobster meat. A great grenache wine on the menu. The server made recommendations as if this place was his own.
(4)Annalisa M.
You do not come here for the ambience or the atmosphere or the coziness of this place, you come here for the food experience! The got it! I had the fish stew and it was spectacular! So were the Oysters. We had a fantastic evening. Thank you Guys.
(5)Mo m.
East coast seafood done right. Party of five + 2 hr wait = still enjoyed the food?! Must be doing something right. Staff is friendly (2 Running the front), small local joint, fast service. Check it out if you have the chance.
(4)Kyleen K.
Hot lobster roll. It's the only option, other than the great oysters and colossal shrimp cocktail appetizers. Just come for lunch or be prepared to wait outside with 8489336 other tourists. The wait, however, is worth it.
(5)Brian K.
A small spot with a long bar and strip of tables. I opted for the lobster roll warm. I wish I'd gone cold. The dish was solid but it wasn't my favorite lobster roll in town. The food came out almost immediately, but the fries were cold. Luckily the roll was more than filling enough for me. I'd recommend sharing some dishes if you are at least a table of two as these are true American portions. No tapas here! So very solid. It seems like if shellfish is your weakness you will find them irresistible. I was just glad to avoid eating at the tourist trap known as Quincy market.
(4)Addison Y.
Service: I love oysters and I was told at the airport this place is the place to go to. It was simply amazing. Talking about the service, they were really helpful and kind. The oysters they chose for me was very refreshing and I would love to come here again. Food: In the previous section, I wrote that I ordered oysters, but not just oysters, I ordered the lobster roll as well. The lobster was wonderfully seasoned and the bread was so soft and buttery. I never had a lobster roll that good before. The oysters can't really describe because I forgot the names of em but I do remember enjoying them really well.
(5)Juliet H.
I absolutely enjoyed the food here. The five stars are for the service, the food, and the cute restaurant. My boyfriend and I got to the restaurant at about 4:30 pm, on a weekday in January, and the restaurant was full of people. Luckily, there was seating available. I had the lobster roll with hot butter and the boyfriend had the steamed mussels. We also had a dozen oysters, 2 of 6 different types of oysters. The guide that came with the oysters was spot-on. Everything was delicious and up to our expectations. We wanted to come back the next day, but it was absolutely packed. A definite go-to when you're in Boston.

everything everyone says it is, and then some. as long as you can wait

i need to begin this review with a review of the Yelp star system. I gave this restaurant three stars but i disagree with their rating equating it to "A" ok. On a scale of five stars that is a defensible rating but it trends towards a more positive than "middling" rating - which in this case is more appropriate. I went to Neptune a couple weeks ago and had been wanting to go for much, much longer. A business associate had come in from the UK and i was excited about the chance to eat here, AND expense it. This is also a place where the Zagat ratings work better. (Remember their scale is 1-30) Decor / Atmosphere: 25 Great ambience & vibe bustling and noisy but just shy of too loud Service: 24 we sat at the bar which was cranking and the tender did a good job of getting us menus, drinks and time to make decisions Cost: 27. This place is pretty pricey. For two entrees, one salad, one appetizer, and some berrs the total "all in" tag was $180 Food this is where it gets tricky. Overall we liked our meals. My Oysters were really exceptional, practically perfect. Fresh, briney, clean, plump - excellent. The salad was damn fine but a step down, the beers (Harpoon summer - always a great choice) were terrific but the real disappointing big step down was the "acclaimed" lobster roll. On the Zagat scale it was a 11-15 (fair to good). The overall size was nearly diminituitive, the meat was not plentiful and overcooked (honestly how does a New England overcook lobster?), the roll was mediocre brioche (almost better to have a plain hot dog roll), and generally speaking it was not especially flavorful. Would I go back again, yes but I would be very careful about ordering the lobster roll.for a place with so many accolades (many about the lobster roll) i would probably steer clear of it Maybe next trip would be Oysters and beer and have dinner elswhere.
(3)Alana C.
Lobster Roll. WOW. Done one of two ways: hot or cold. What I love about seafood? The simple life! It speaks for itself and you bring out the flavours. We had one hot lobster roll and one cold. The cold lobster roll was a little bit of a let down for me, particularly because I had the most delicious lobster roll of my life in Cape Cod. BUT THE HOT LOBSTER ROLL WAS SO GOOD. We actually wished we could have ordered another but were so stuffed it was a non-option. Pass on the fries and order more seafood. This place is definitely worth the wait!
(5)Mina B.
I came here to try some oysters and New England clam chowder! There's a lady in the window shucking away and plating fresh oysters. I stared and took pictures of course. Expect at least an hour wait. They will take your phone number and call when your table is ready, so you can explore while you wait. I got seated at the bar and the service was great! I can't wait to bring people here when I return to Boston. Nothing beats fresh seafood, wow. Pro tip: 5 minute wait if you dine alone at the bar, even at lunchtime!
(5)Susan P.
Holy cow. Not everything was perfect, but the quality of what I loved makes this 5-star spot. Put your name and number in and grab drink across the street at Vito's. Must-haves 1. Oysters - hard to mess up in Boston 2. Johnny Cake - worth every penny 3. Neptune's "painted" burger [i.e. Topped with fried oysters Leave behind 1. Lobster roll - I need sauce, mayo... something 2. Fries - just meh Also, Jen was a wonderful server.
(5)G6 R.
This is one of the most cocky and unprofessional restaurant that I have ever visited. The wait was absolutely ridiculous. We showed up around 5:30pm and put down our phone number waited to be called (the waitress said about 2.5-3 hours wait) and guess what they never called. The place is very cramped, noisy and expensive. After an hour wait, we made an smart decision not to wait and found a near by restaurant/bar call Paddy O's, and they serve 1 1/4 whole Lobster for $17.99. I think that is a much better deal than at Neptune. Thank you god that Neptune never called and save me at least $150.
(1)Brittany C.
Love this place - totally worth the wait (there's always a wait). Put your name in then go grab a drink nearby. They'll call you eventually. Oysters, lobster roll, johnny cakes with caviar, scallops, wine - it's all amazing.
(5)Tommie G.
Worth the long lines! Oysters can be pricey but are all delish! The hot lobster roll is one of the best. Skip the hamburger by all costs it is over seasoned. Great spot in Boston!

If you can get in here, please do. Expensive, yes. But worth the treat for their buttered lobster roll and raw bar.

oyster! oyster! oyster! lobster roll! oops ordered too much... unable to finish the lobster roll...hey sweetie how about me taking the lobster meat and the bread and fries are all yours. notice the waiting time might be a hour and up!

Is this the best Lobster Roll in BOSTON? This is a big statement, but Neptune Oyster has the street creds to make it one of the best Lobster rolls/seafood experience. Pros: Oysters Lobster Rolls (Get it with the butter and not MAYO) Sear Scallops Cons: Very very small. Wait-time is like 2 hours. So better put your name down and get a drink elsewhere. If you really want to eat here, I would make sure you come early when it just opens. There is usually a line already.

Fabulous! Because of its small size there can be a wait if you don't get there early. They will take your number and call you when your table is ready so you can go walk around. Food is spectacular. I had steamed clams and the lobster roll. Highly recommend over Union Oyster.

Delicious and fresh! Sure, the wait was long (45 minutes at 9 PM on a Wednesday) but they take down your cell phone and you're free to do whatever you want till they call you. The place is tiny but upscale-ish. Had complete oyster overload.

Best seafood in Boston. Be prepared to wait for a table, but it's worth it.

Christine was great at explaining all the confusing documents and getting us in and out quickly with everything we needed. Super customer service!

After waiting 4.5 hours for a table for 'lunch', I really wish I could say that it was worth the wait, especially the lobster roll that everyone goes on about in the reviews. It's a tiny, almost 'hole in the wall' but with a little bit of a more sophisticated feel. The lobster roll was good, but nothing phenomenal, and not something I would order for $30 again. The PEI mussels appetizer though - that was an on point decision. Extremely flavorful!! The clam chowder was also fairly good, but nothing I would wait that long for either. Overall, would I go again? Probably not. Was it worth it to go once? I think so.

If you're just craving for a Lobster Roll Sandwich. Pls...! Don't go..! It's just hype. Nothing special about the taste itself. But If you're willing to wait for 2 to 3 hrs. Good luck & one more thing! If the hostess ask for your Ph.#'s Don't take her word or else you'll wait for nothing...

The lobster roll here is completely worth the wait and price ($28). I can't explain how good it was in words, just try it. The fries were so amazing I even enjoyed them with ketchup. I hate ketchup. I didn't try anything else, because I'm on a budget but the dishes my neighbors at the bar ordered looked delectable as well.

Tasty take on seafood classics and nice atmosphere. Minus one star for too much hype and hours-long wait even for bar seats for one. There are a few places next door with just as good of food, minus the wait.

We waited 30 minutes before Neptune opened on Saturday. We managed to get a table and both ordered lobster rolls and fried clam strips to share. Definitely worth the wait! Always come before it opens or you'll be waiting for hours :) Service was decent, and lobster was delicious!

Easily my favorite restaurant in Boston. However, brutal wait time to get in. I recommend you go at 6, put your name in, walk to Bacco and get a drink and they will call you 90 minutes later and you're good.

Tip - always a queue weekends July / August .. Go mid week or after 2 pm .. Great oysters , place is small . If you don't feel like queuing try Mare instead .. Much larger selection of oysters

Delicious, plump lobster stuffed into a grilled roll. I admit, i've had better rolls but oh my, that lobster. Got mine cold (with mayo) but they offer a warm (with butter) option as well. So much lobster makes the hefty $28 price tag very much worth it. Comes with a side of fries that you may not even get to. On Mondays they also have a lobster spaghettini which was so flavorful, definitely rivals the roll! Wait seems to be stupid long but we got there right as they opened so would recommend that. Super small, cozy place with amazing seafood.

Absolutely LOVE the lobster roll with butter. Delicious oysters as well. I always try to go early before there's a 3 hour wait. Wasn't a big fan of the chowder but it's because I like mine thick and chunky.

What can you say other than wow the reviews of this place are spot on. It was a real pleasure to enjoy the experience of this place. I had the lobster roll warm. I was in love with the first bite. I arrived 45 minutes before they opened and a line had already formed. If you are a foodie this is a must stop. Between the lobster roll the dozen oysters and the beer I was in heaven. Fanfrickentastic!!!!!!!!

Shhh don't tell anyone else. This place is always good and manages to keep the standard high year after year.

Been here twice. The warm lobster roll is very good. I had the clam chowder and the potatoes were hard, looks like they didn't cook all the way. It's ok. I can't say I'd go out of my way to eat here again. I rather just drive to the North Shore and eat in Gloucester fresh off the fishing boats. But I'm glad I tried it. I think you should def. try it at least once.

Amazing. Simply put.

I've been there several times, and I don't think I had anything except oysters, but the oysters are the best I've had in town. I don't know any other place that carries so many types at the same time. The wait can be a pain and it's certainly not the cheapest place to get oysters in town, but I think it's worth it!
