Normally an adventurous eater, I was hesitant to try KO Pies even though I've lived in East Boston for over a year. Cristina C. asked for a girl's date at KO Pies, and I said "here's my chance"! I'm really glad I went. KO Pies is unique in that it is affordable, fun, and interesting to visit; it's a place you want to visit and stay for a while. That makes it perfect for friend dates, romantic dates, with a group of friends, just 2, etc. Here's why KO Pies works: Food - super successful. They keep the pies heated in a little oven (not something you can always do successfully) so by the time we sat at a table, our buzzers were already buzzing. I had a classic pie (essentially finely ground beef and onions), a caesar salad, and a cider. The pie was delicious, it definitely needed ketchup or another sauce to round out the flavors, but I think that's fine. You don't want to eat a plain hot dog, and I think it's the same idea. Customize! Ketchup, bbq sauce, sriracha...it's all good. Pies look small but are filling. The salad was really great: i loved the egg and bacon added, they used a nice amount of dressing, and I normally hate croutons but these were great, like garlic bread. Downeast Cider was a good drink to have with my lunch. Venue - the outside seating is communal, which I like! We chatted a little with the people next to us, and it made for a friendly encounter. The games are fun and it's nice to be outside! The shipyard is unique and seems sort of funny, but it's just another part about KO Pies that is endearing. Headed back tonight for drinks and a snack. More thoughts later!

Definitely a hidden gem, KO (and the surrounding area) looks a little grimy from the outside, but definitely worth looking for if you want some thoughtful comfort food. Inside looks like a British pub as well, with the red doors and wood tables. I tried the braised beef with caramelized onion and blue cheese pie, which was the pie-of-the-month when I visited. The pastry is flaky and rich, which was delicious itself. The filling inside was strong with the beef tender and full of flavor. It's out-of-the-way, but definitely worth the drive, especially if you have to go to Logan for something. Summertime would be great time to come so you can eat outside under the tent.

My girlfriend said give it a 5 (she is too nice), and I want to give it a 3, so I'm going to average our reviews at 4-stars and explain why. We went on Friday but were turned away at the door because a craft beer company had reserved the restaurant for a private event (which cost $95/pp). In their defense, they said they tweeted that they'd be close. In my defense, I don't check the Twitter feed of every restaurant I visit. We managed to sneak in last night. I say sneak in because despite saying they are open until 10:00pm on their website; the kitchen closes at 8:00pm on Sundays (this is not written down anywhere). If you get there late, you can get a beer and a frozen pie to cook at home. We got there at like 7:59, so they agreed to cook for us. I think they should really update the website because we drove over 20 minutes to get there (twice if you count Friday's debacle). Had we been turned away yet again this would have been a 1-star review. The seating area inside is tiny. They have a couple 2-tops and a couple 6-tops. There is plenty of picnic table seating outside if you're into that sort of thing. Solid selection of beer. The James Boags lager was really good. Be prepared to spend $20/pp. Each pie is around $6.50. You can add another $6.50 to make it a "floater" which simply means served with mashed potatoes, gravy, and peas. If you'd like to get a side of potato wedges, those also cost $6.50. Beers are $6.00. I had the beef with cheese and a side of potato wedges. They describe the beef with cheese as their version of a cheeseburger. If you go into it expecting it to taste like a cheeseburger, you will be sorely disappointed. I didn't really taste any cheese at all. The potato wedges were dynamite though. One serving is enough for 2-3 people so definitely get them. Kristina had the beef stew floater. Her meal was significantly better than mine. Based on other reviews, I'd say get the beef stew or lamb shank floater. The floater really makes the dish. The mashed potatoes were delicious and the gravy and mashed peas add some additional flavor and texture. She was so excited she bought a couple frozen pies to leave in the freezer for rainy days when we don't feel like cooking or leaving the house. The pies themselves are not very big, I think they said 5 inches. With the sides and a beer you should be all set. The service was awesome and we enjoyed chatting it up with the two girls working. I'm definitely glad I tried KO Pies after seeing them on Chronicle. I'm sure I'll be back; but I'll be extra sure to check their Facebook, Twitter, and call them in advance to ensure that they are open before we make the trek.

Excellent food - try any pie "floater" style with gravy, peas, and mash. The non-pie options are also yummy - salad is fresh, shrimp well-seasoned. My friend got the sangria which she said was delicious. The location is random, and at first you feel like you're in the wrong place because it's deep within the shipyard but that only adds to its charm. Fun outdoor games like oversized connect-four and Jenga encourage post-meal socializing. An excellent spot for food and fun by the harbor in the summer.

I wish they'd make clear on the website that the kitchen closes at 9pm and not 10pm. The hours listed on the website say they are open til 10pm but if you get there after 9pm you're stuck with only a couple pie options (f they have any left). This was a bummer since I really wanted a salad with my pie, and I also wanted a curry veg pie (which they did not have). The beef pies and the beef and cheese pies are a little lackluster. Quality is just ok; you feel like you've paid $6.50 for something that won't fill you up. My boyfriend commented that the fact that they use ground beef (rather than cubed beef) also makes you feel like you've just eaten something that's incredibly cheap to make. I decided to have some ice cream (since my one pie did not fill me) and upon spending over $5.00 on one of their little "homemade" ice cream cups, took the cover off to find it was half- filled. What a disappointment. And the ice cream itself was nothing special. I'll only be back if my friends really want to meet here. The outdoor seating makes for a fun atmosphere if you're drinking beers and want some grub to fill your tummy. Just don't go for the pies alone. Not worth it.

First time exploring Ko's in East Boston and it was a very artsy sight. Loved the ambiance. So eclectic and inviting. The Raines stopped just in time for us to enjoy our pies on the deck under the huge white tent. I ordered the curry veggie pie with the sweet peas and mashed potatoes on top. Can I just say, mmmm mmmm mmmm! I wanted a chicken curry or the previous pie of the month "jerk chicken," but neither was available. I honestly couldn't tell I was missing any meat. It was extremely filling and really just an overall nice place to take any out of town guests.

Ok, I'll be honest- I was definitely a little skeptical of an Australian pub/restaurant. I mean the Australians aren't really known for their fine cuisine, right? Anyways after waking about 5 min thought what looked like an abandoned shipyard, you will find KO pies tucked away all alone with not much else around it. Now for the review of the food. My wife had one of the signature pies- the beef stew pie (like actual pie, not pizza pie). I had a few bites of this and it was quite tasty. Think flaky crust of a phyllo dough with some damn good beef stew inside. The beef wasn't watery at all and the crust kept its flakiness throughout the whole pie. I got the one of the special salads ( Vietnamese shrimp salad). I was very impressed by the flavor of the salad. The only few mis-haps were that there were a few too many hot peppers for my liking and a tad bit too much dressing. In addition to the food, they have large JENGA! what a blast from the past! We played a fun game of JENGA and it was awesome. Definitely a great place to go for lunch or a low key dinner with a view of the Boston harbor.

Are you looking for a little flavour of Australia in a somewhat decent and far away city like Boston? Well, this place might be your best choice. I recently returned from Australia, and there are moments that I just really want to just eat some meat pies, sausage rolls, and drink Australian beer. KO stands for "knock out", and this place wants to "knock you out" with some wonderful Australian food. I ordered a meat pie with lamb, a sausage roll, and some Cooper's beer for under $20. The meat pie had a great savoury flavour with the right amount of crustiness. The sausage roll was delicious and I really liked the juicy sausage and the crustiness of the pastry. The Cooper's beer was refreshing. For $13, you could get any pie covered in mashed potatoes, mushy peas, and gravy reminiscent of eating a pie from Harry's Cafe de Wheels in the Sydney neighbourhood of Woolloomooloo. The sausage rolls were so good that I actually bought 10 for a Super Bowl party. A Super Bowl is supposedly a really big American football (actually it's gridiron, and not really football) game and a mini-concert that heaps of typical Americans watch. Although it was expensive at $37.50, it was worth it, and my friends enjoyed the sausage rolls. If you are going to buy meat pies and sausage rolls, you either need an oven or a toaster oven to reheat them along with some instructions from this place. I had a brief conversation with the owner, and I learned he was from Wollongong, a city an hour's train ride South of Sydney. This place is not too far from the airport, so you could get some tasty Australian food before leaving for better places. When I walked to this place, I felt like I was walking to a longshoreman's dwelling. This place is small, but if the temperature is greater than 18 degrees Celsius, you could sit outside at a picnic table and look at all these warehouses by the shipyard. Overall, if you end up in a somewhat decent city like Boston, and you really want some simple Australian food with beer, this place is your best choice. The pies and sausage rolls may not be almost as good as Harry's Cafe de Wheels in Woolloomooloo and Bourke Street Bakery in Surry Hills, but where else in Massachusetts can you find them? Also if you ever meet the owner, Sam, tell him I said hi, hopefully he will continue to be committed to making this place good and continue to bring more and more flavours of Australia to the somewhat decent state of Massachusetts. Hi Sam!

This place is just fun. My wife and I went to check it out on a summer weekend afternoon. After a slow stroll through the shipyard, enjoying the art installations and soaking in the amazing view of downtown Boston, we made it to KO. The pies themselves were good, not amazing, but they're definitely something different than we're used to eating, which is always welcome in our food adventures. The best part is the patio with lawn games and giant board games, a very relaxed atmosphere, and other diners who are friendly and obviously there to relax and have a cold one or three. Also, the homemade ice cream sandwich was delicious.

So I was quite excited when a couple friends asked us to meet them here, thinking the food/meat pies would be as good as some we had while visiting Australia a few years ago. Alas, I have to say I was underwhelmed. I had the braised shank pie while my partner had the beef & cheese...both were "ok", but didn't produce an "OMG" reaction for my palate. And I found them to be a tad dry...could use more gravy, and bump up the flavor profile, which was a bit bland. Great location, seems to be the trendy place to go, but the food was just ok! Would I go again? Perhaps if I'm in the area visiting friends, but wouldn't go out of my way to do so. On a positive note: the staff was great, super friendly!

EXCELLENT CRUST - AVERAGE FILLING - OUTRAGEOUSLY HIGH PRICES The fillings are average in taste, far too little in quantity, and priced at least twice as high as they should be. HERE'S THE BREAKDOWN The pies weigh a total of 8 ounces, but the filling weighs only 4 ounces. Priced at $6.75 each, they're twice as expensive as a $7.00 large submarine sandwich which weighs a full 16 ounces, and has filling that weighs 12 ounces. When you do the Math, the pies cost twice the price overall, triple the price in terms of the all-important filling, and their taste is good but inferior. No thanks, I'll skip this bad deal and eat elsewhere.

This place is an absolute hidden gem... Aussie/British style meat pies, lamb shank floater I s one of the best meals I have ever had! Girlfriend had the beef stew pie, also amazing... Had a sausage roll as well, very highly recommend this place...

Words can't describe how good the food here is!! Stopped for lunch on my way to the airport - had the small Vietnamese chicken salad and at the suggestion of the super nice guy behind the counter, the lamb pie. 1. The Vietnamese Chicken Salad BEST SALAD IVE EVER HAD, I want to eat this for the rest of my LIFE. It's poached chicken with thai basil, carrots, cucumbers, peanuts, some hot peppers, bean sprouts - OH MY GOD ITS SO STINKING GOOD. It's tossed in an awesome vinaigrette - it's insane. INSANE. 2. The lamb pie - why would anyone order anything else??? It's braised lamb with peas and all sorts of good stuff. With a squirt of ketchup and rooster sauce, it's AMAZING. Eating outside on a gorgeous summer day savoring some amazing food = happy happy Joanna

Yes Yes Yes!!!! This spot just keeps getting better & better every time i come back. Just now they revamped the inside bar & even put up some games ( large jinga, cornhole, and some other ones ) outside. This place never seem to stop amazing me. Im so lucky to live so close to it. It should be a MUST hangout spot for every one.

Yes! It's kind of funny having an Australian eatery in East Boston, but we do! It's actually really far out of the way which makes it even more special. If driving, go through the gate and just say you are going to KO, there's plenty of parking. Once you get there you have some life decisions to make....what to get!? I actually got a beef stew pie and a sausage roll and a side of mushy peas. Beef Stew Pie - so flavorful and a nice treat at $6.75. The meat was shredded in a nice thick gravy, and the crust was so flaky and delicious. Sausage roll - I feel like coming back here for another one or two of these. Sausage rolled in a flaky pastry shell. Try it! Mushy Peas - sounds kinda horrible but was actually quite delicious. I think there was a hint of mint in the mash. Overall, this place was great. Come on a nice warm day to sit outside. The eating areas are very small so if its busy you may not find a place to sit. I want to try everything!

Went to this location as the South Boston location was closed on Sunday. First of all this location is awesome, although oddly off the beaten path. I feel like its one of those artsy collective places that would have a farmers market and studios on the weekend. There's giant fish and sea creatures on the roofs, and KO pies of all places. If this isn't a hip trendy place yet, can it be plz? Anyway, we placed an order for 4 pies, and upon our return home, realized we had been given two. We quickly called KO, received a heartfelt apology, and a complete credit for the order! What great service, from a restaurant that I've visited in the past and will continue to visit again. An honest mistake made right by a friendly employee! Oh and there's a statue of a construction worker/dock worker eating an ice cream cone, trapped in a pigeon coop. So there's that.

Here to try out some aussie food near the harbor. For the appetizers had the shrimp, chicken wings., and the wedges. The appetizers were excellent, loved the shrimp and the wings. Then we all had the hot pies. I had the lamb pie which I had with some Sriracha which was amazing. . My friends had the beef stew which was there favorite. Good food beautiful location and would love to come back in the summer. Great staff as well. Location is hard to find but I was able to get there from the T, so is doable for most.

I have enjoyed everything I've eaten here since starting to work nearby. I especially enjoy the rotating pie of the month, in this case the jerk chicken with pineapple ketchup. Its difficult to not want to steal the condiments here as they are a unique blend of spices that compliment the food served in this Australian spot.

Amazing Aussie Food by the harbor! Best kept secret in Boston and totally worth the drive for these amazing pies! The dine in area is very casual and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. Definitely a memorable experience for those looking for a place to enjoy great food and catch up with friends. The pies were to die for. Go see why.

Simple straight up Aussie Pies. True blue service and cred, this is no fake wannabe joint. It's a diamond in the rough and worth the venture to new grounds for a hearty basic lunch. On a nice day, enjoy the sun and seating outdo doors in the shipyard.

I had high expectations for this place and was disappointed on my first trip. Maybe my mistake was ordering a vegetarian pie but my companion ordered their beef stew pie and was also disappointed Given the reviews on here, the nice a atmosphere, pleasant staff and fantastic views of the city I decided to give this place another chance. Second time around I ordered the burger and oh man am I glad I did. I think I am going to have dream about this burger for the rest of my life, this is the food of the Gods. Definitely one of the best burgers I've ever had, may seem like a weird combo of flavors on the menu but boy does it work. They have a unique selection of beers, some of which I had never seem before, I asked for a recommendation and was happy with my choice. They have outdoor and indoor seating, outdoor you end up sharing with others but it wasn't cramped, great place to watch a game. Great picture on the TV both inside and outside Even as a local resident I had a hard time finding this place it's tucked away in the shipyard but that means ample parking and amazing views of the water and the skyline, bring your camera.

Pies, pies and more pies. Yes!!! Sounds like my kind of place. I love pies if you can't already tell ;-). The best part of a pie to me is the warm flaky crust especially the edges. You don't like the edges? Fine that leaves more for me... Lol. KO pies live up to all my hopes and dreams that I've had since I discovered they existed. The fish and chips are ok chips were a little too salty for my taste. But the fish was fresh and cooked well. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because I've only been there once. If everything is as great the second time around I will definitely add the extra star. KO I hope to see you soon. With love, A pie lover :-)

Excellent food @ a small casual hole-in-the-wall type atmosphere. Beer-garden esque format - order your food & bevs from the bartender and grab a seat at one of the several communal seating areas. Can be a little chilly depending on the weather so dress appropriately. At this place, meat pies are the focus so those did not disappoint. We split 3 pies across 2 people with a side of wedges. Food arrived hot, fresh and delicious for a reasonable price. Definitely worth checking out for a different kind of vibe & some tasty dishes from down-under.

Delicious. I don't think I want to know how many calories are packed into these bad boys. But I'm a huge savory pie fan and they really know how to make it great. My friend has a boat on the marina, and after a long day of being on the water in late summer, there's nothing to warm you up like one of these. A little pricey with a pie+beer but for something as hard to get your hands on like a savory meat pie, definitely come and spend the $$. Yum!
(4)
Wham S.
Really cool place, great atmosphere, great food. Try the hard root beer float. Mmmm. Prices were reasonable as well. The seating is outside at picnic tables, so it might be less fun if it's cold, but we went on a beautiful spring evening. Lots of art on display in the neighborhood as well.

Their beef stew pie and Aussie burger blew my mind!!! :B I ordered the beef stew pie and tried some of the lamb pie. Both were divine, but I liked the beef stew pie more. The crust on these pies are light and flaky and just so delicious. It's like a pie crust and a croissant had a baby and created the perfect crust. I also ordered the Aussie burger with bacon - because everything is better with bacon! I was pleasantly surprised that the egg yolk on the burger was not runny. Also, there was some dressing (vinaigrette maybe) on the lettuce in the burger. It works so well with the rest of the burger. I wish I could take this restaurant back home in Virginia Beach.. I will definitely have to stop by the next time I'm back in Boston!

This place is DANK! Can I take this little gem back to North Carolina with me?! My friend and I were hella confused walking in-- it's counter service, just a FYI. The pie-of-the-month was braised beef with caramelized onion and blue cheese. Best. Meat Pie. Ever. My mouth is still watering! We also ordered the lamb shank (a little dry, not much flavoring to it), beef with cheese and the sausage roll (reminds me a bit of a giant pork eggroll). Besides the awesome food, the decor is unique but the two person tables are sooooo small. But I guess if you're just stuffing your face with pie it doesn't matter. Advice: No forks!

Best, yummiest, I could eat this every day and be happy. The crust is buttery and flaky, the filling is creamy and delicious. Wish they would ship 'em frozen so I can have them when I'm not in Eastie. Cool location, enjoy all of the sculptures on the roofs of various buildings in the shipyard.
(5)

Love this place. Great outdoor seating in a hidden spot in Eastie. I recommend getting your pie as a floater though the crust can be on the drier side without gravy.

KO Pies is awesome. It's super hard to find, being tucked away in a shipyard and all, but it's worth it. The place is really small inside, but in the summer there's outdoor seating. If you're staying inside like I did, you order at the counter, and then find a place to sit. When your food is ready, your buzzer rings and you pick it up. There's a water cooler in the back, and silverware on the tables in jugs. They make Australian meat pies, and hoooooo boy, are they delicious. I got the lamb pie, and wasn't disappointed. You can go for the classic ground beef meat pie with a floater, which means that it's covered in mashed potatoes, mashed peas and gravy, which is also delicious. I really liked the lamb pie dipped in the gravy, and will be asking for a side of gravy when I come back. So fantastic.

Curried veg pie has a nice crust and is really well seasoned. The veg are still crisp and fresh too (a huge plus). Don't let the location throw you off, this is a hidden gem!

KO pies is definitely worth the trip, no matter what neighborhood you are coming from. The restaurant is located right within the shipyard which means lots of space for parking, great views of the city, and outdoor seating along with corn hole sets. The menu has many different options but you'd be a absolute fool not to try one of their meat pies. I love the lamb! Don't forget to order yourself a bucket of gansettes and some fries as well.

Food was delicious- we enjoyed the beef stew pie the most along with the shrimp appetizer (spicy), grilled fish and potato wedges. Good beer on tap! I can't imagine someone not enjoying their visit. We were only in town for the weekend and went twice. Will definitely go back on our next trip to Boston. Food was affordable- was not a tourist trap. The location at the shipyard made for a great experience as well.

Q: What do I do if I fly into Logan airport and the person picking me up is coming from Providence and doesn't leave until I call them from passenger pick-up? A: I go to KO Pies! And so should you, even if they do pick you up on time! That's right, I rolled my luggage down the sidewalk, through the neighborhood, into the shipyard, and to KO Pies. I thoroughly enjoyed a a Harp and a curry pie with its succulent crust and abundant flavor. Go there, eat pie and drink beer!

Finally! After years of bitching and moaning, Eastie finally has an eatery that is both original and damn delicious. I want a beef stew pie in my mouth all the time now, preferably with a Crabbie's Ginger Beer standing by to wash it down. Everything is super fresh, everyone is super friendly, and the space is the perfect combination of artistic, industrial, and pure whimsy. It is probably the most random thing you will find in the most unexpected location in all of Boston. And I love it. I'm so glad they are still going strong. Oh, and they should bring back the weekend brunch menu. I honestly can't put into words how amazing the French toast was, but I want it in my mouth, too. Every weekend.

After being a huge fan of their location in Southie I was very happy to see their next location open up closer to my house. On our visit they were just getting warmed up as they had only been open a week. They had a full selection of their now famous Australian pies available along with a great selection of beer. They also had a greatly expanded menu as well which included some fish items and a burger. I also tried their Sangria, it was good but a little on the strong side and not sweet enough for my taste. The real selling point here is the gorgeous location and its hidden gem status. Don't be fooled by your GPS, keep driving through the security gate until you get to KO Pies. The owner Sam Jackson, who has the best celebrity name ever, is always very friendly as well. My favorite pie is the classic with cheese. Also this is the old Scups location and I am very happy what they did with the place.

We love KO Pies in Southie, and since we were out and about on Sunday (when the Southie location is closed) we decided to be adventurous and check out the East Boston location. Getting there definitely is something of an adventure but well worth the trek. I went with my standard lamb shank pie and sausage roll, my wife went with her chicken schnitzel sandwich. Both fantastic and the funky, unique works of art that are right across the road are an added bonus.

Great location. Food was delicious and inexpensive. I wasn't too crazy about their version of the mashed peas. I ordered take-out but the ambience is very cool. They seem to have a healthy sense of humor.

I love this place. Heated lamps for outdoor seating (though it is getting too cold now), good Friday deals (pie + beer for $10) and delicious food. I like the curry vegetable pie the best though I am a meat eater and I LOVE the vietnamese chicken salad. Sooo delicious and healthy. The fish and chips are also delicious - reallllly good wedge fries.

Yum! We learned about this place from the captain of our water taxi. My friend and I shared a braised lamb shank pie, and it was fantastic. I'm usually not the biggest fan of lamb but will make exceptions. This is definitely one of them. The lamb chunks were very tender, and the gravy was so flavorful and chock full of peas, carrots, and green beans. The crust was so perfectly flaky and buttery. In short, one of the best meat pies I have ever had in my life. Unfortunately, we couldn't stay and had to take our pie to go, but I'm so glad we took the time to stop by. I definitely want to go back. Next time, I will be hanging out on the patio with a pie in one hand and a beer in the other!

KO Pies gets 5 stars from me for 2 reasons: First, the pies are delicious; Second: the customer service was above and beyond when I had a mix-up with a takeout order. We ordered and paid for 4 pies to take to lunch with some friends. When we got to our destination across town, we discovered that we actually only had two pies. I called KO and within a few short hours had heard back from them and was offered a full refund for that day's purchase. Had we been closer, they would even have delivered the left-behind pies to us (they were heated, but somehow ended up not getting packed with the rest of our order). I'll definitely be back, not just for the delicious pies but for the conscientious and efficient customer service.

Wow... That about says it all. For starters I ordered the noodle soup with vegetables... Best soup ever...flavory tasty a bit spicy but not overly... Just the way goldilocks likes it.... But I didn't stop there...I also ordered the beef stew pie covered with mashed potatoes, mushy peas and gravy.. Yum yum yum..I didn't lick the plate because there was plenty people around me and didn't want to look uncouth.. I basically rolled my way out of the place and walking back to the hotel was a very slow crawl but it was worth it... I forgo breakfast n lunch the next day and I'd do it all over... Matter of fact I'll probably will enforce I go back to Va.. Shame there's nothing like this place back home... I may have to have them post me some pies...

Great place, good food, certainly if the sun is shining you should go! It's a fun location. If you are looking for table service and linens, this is not your spot. However, what they do they do well. The lamb pies were our favorites...and the veggie pie...and the chicken pie...the beef pie was great. Oh hell, this place ROCKS, but be prepared to be social and share your table.

Came here on a friends recommendation. The place serves meat pies and burgers, so I got one of each. The burger was stacked high with toppings, an egg (yum!) and the patty was juicy. Moving on to the pie, I almost didn't have enough room. But it was a good size, I had to pass in the pie toppings (mashed taters, etc), otherwise would have to be rolled back to my car. Beer selection was not what I expected... A wide variety and the option to buy buckets. They have bands on certain nights. A real hidden gem on Eastie, but the location is fitting.

The first time I went here the cashier (who also takes the orders) was awful. We arrived at like 9:03 and apparently the kitchen closed at 9. Unfortunately, the cashier didn't tell us that, she mumbled something neither of us could hear and just didn't ring up the things I ordered from the kitchen. We finished ordering and I paid when the boyfriend pointed out that the bill seemed a bit low. It was at this point that we asked and were told "Oh the kitchen is closed". She let me order and instead of making sure I knew what was going on just ignored my order. My boyfriend got his pies (which are adorable single serving deals) because they keep some in a hot box after the kitchen closes. While ordering I asked if they sold hard cider because I couldn't read all of the bottles up on a shelf behind her. She said yes and proceeded to sell me a bottle of Crabbie's ginger beer which is decidedly NOT cider. Sadly she opened it before I actually saw what is was so I was stuck with it despite loathing the taste of ginger. No beverage for me. : ( The second time I went the cashier was much much better. However, I got the fish and chips and while it was good it definitely wasn't what I was expecting. The fish is baked (and it was cooked well) but I really wanted a traditional fried fish and chips. I also found the fish and the chips to be extremely salty (and I really like salt) to the point where I couldn't finish everything.

"What? There's no Australian place serving pies here in Eastie!" is what I told my friend. Well, based on Yelp recommendations, we went. Going to the shipyard and figuring out where it was was the first challenge. Was this a fishing house in the beginning? This is such a weird place to have restaurants here (aye, this town's gentrification...) My friends ordered different pies and I ordered the sausage roll. We were imagining these big magnificent pies, as hinted by the name, and well, we got these hand-sized little mediocre pies. :/ The sausage roll I got was not done well or something, as I felt sick shortly after leaving. Never coming back here again, had to debunk this hype.

I store my sailboat here in the winter in part because of this place. The meat pies are incredible, the chick pea Greek salad is great too if you want something healthier. It's a hipster hang-out on weekends, music outside, good beer etc Art installations all around the boat yard. Try it if you're in the neighborhood.

Seriously....a hidden gem. Explosion of flavors in your mouth. I haven't had a thing here that was less than spectacular. Meat pies are fantastic, add the floaters if you're extra hungry. The sausage roll is such a hearty snack, it kept me full and satisfied. Prices are so reasonable for what can be considered a meal! You wouldn't go here if you didn't know about it but everything is great. Highly recommend! Oh also, Yelp says it's American but it is totally authentic AUSTRALIAN! With traditional beers and sweets as well!

Meat pies! mmMmMmm The crust is just wonderful, it's perfectly flaky! I shared the Classic beef, Braised lamb shank and the sausage roll with a friend. The braised lamb shank was my absolute favorite. The lamb was so tender and cooked with veggies. The ingredients tasted fresh and the sauce was not too thick. Perhaps I've had too many frozen chicken pot pies in my life, which is the only baseline I have - but this lamb shank pie truly amazed me! The classic beef was really good as well. I appreciate that they use a leaner ground beef so it wasn't oozing with grease. It tastes even better with ketchup! I almost forgot about the Lamington, an Australian dessert I believe. It's a squared piece of cake covered with chocolate and coconut shavings. The cake was very moist and not overly sweet. A must try! The location is a little out of nowhere because you're literally trespassing through the shipyard. I do think it adds to the experience though because it feels like you've truly uncovered a hidden gem. I loved the pies and I will definitely be back for more.

LOVE this place. Funky little area - cool outdoor seating in the summer - nice people, beer and wine, but most of all the food! I am a pescatarian so sadly can't rave about the meat pies (tho family members certainly did)... BUT the curried veggie pie was AMAZING. Perfect crust, flaky and buttery - filling was just the right blend of savory and comfort. Just one of those magic meals. They seem to often have specials including seafood dishes as well. It's Affordable too. Plus the pies to go (to heat at home later) come out just as nicely as the one's you get there. I highly recommend KO Pies at the shipyard.

First heard about this place on the Phantom Gourmet and saw that it was Australian food. As I am one to diversify my taste buds and get a taste of random things, I decided to check it out. It's in a random little location but wasn't too hard to find. Once you get inside it's a small little space but enough to sit down and eat with a person or two. Since we didn't know the next time we would be back, we ordered about half their menu. We got the Irish Beef Stew pie, the Lamb Shank pie, the Chicken Schnitzel, the Spicy Shrimp, the Fish & Chips, and the Sticky Date Pudding for dessert. For the pies, my favorite was the Irish Beef, it was packed full of soft, well seasoned meat that was hearty and delicious. The Lamb Shank was awesome too, love the lamb flavor, great seasoning veggies. The Chicken Schnitzel was delicious, definitely enough for a whole meal and the sauce they use with it is tasty. The Spicy Shrimp and the Fish & Chips were both good but not amazing, probably would not get them again. The wedges with the fish though were awesome. As for dessert, the Sticky Date Pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream is honestly one of the best tasting desserts I've ever had. So much so that after going there and having it, I went home and looked for recipes so I could make my own version. Mine was not as good, so I'll definitely be back for more of their pies and pudding.

Absolutely delicious food and wicked cool owners! A hidden gem at the shipyard. Delicious craft beers. Try the veggie burger it's unreal.

I judge a pie by its' crust. If it's flaky, thick, slightly salty, slightly buttery..then you know it's a great crust! This place has got that but NOT only that they also have an assortment savory, hearty yummy meat fillings!!! (or veggie if you prefer) Classic Beef is like a cheeseburger which has everything I love: beef and cheese. It wasn't too soggy on the inside, flavor was explosive. Braised Lamb Shank was extremely flavorful but not too "gamey" tasting. Meat was very tender and so satisfying. Highly recommend you order one of the pies to try. I mean you ARE at a pie shop. It was really hard to find this place as others have mentioned. They only serve chips in bags but not actual fries at this location.

The food is solid. Depending on the day you go, the service varies. The atmosphere is is nice, they have outdoor seating and the place is located on the harbor, so its nice to be by the water. I ordered a pie and was asked if I wanted it as a "float". I asked what that was, and the guy explained to me it comes with mashed potatoes, peas and gravy. I assumed it would be a slight extra charge, but it literally doubled the cost from 6.25 (for the pie) to 12.50 (for a scoop of mashed peas and potatoes). I was pretty taken aback by this. At the very least, i think they should have given a fair warning of the price uptick. So, patrons beware!

I was a Scup's devotee for a long time. And I was beyond devastated when they closed. Luckily KO Pies has stepped in to fill some of the void left behind by the departure of Dave & Wendy of Scup's. Of course, it's the same lovely location, on the same lovely pier, where the same cool breeze blows salty air off the harbor. The patio tables are really enjoyable when the weather's nice. The food is good, though the vegetarian options are somewhat limited. The falafel is solid, and the vegetable pot pie is pretty delicious. But for me, the highlight is the bittersweet chocolate frozen dessert with berries. I don't know what this thing is, exactly (ice cream? pudding? not really sure), but it's divine. Light texture, packed with flavor. Just awesome. Service with a smile, too. Welcome to Eastie, KO Pies!

Mm mm, goood. For my first visit to KO, I decided to keep it nice n' simple by ordering the Classic Beef. Let me break it down for you with this simple equation, and please excuse me if this doesn't really constitute proper math-y equation correctness. (Pastry = Flaky + Crispy) + (Filling = Well-seasoned + Generous + Piping hot) = Pie perfection! I mean really, what more could you ask for from a meat pie? While KO has a pretty extensive menu, for the moment they are only selling their different pies. Seems like it'll be a few more weeks until they start offering the full menu to the masses (can't wait!). On the plus side, they do have a beer and wine license!(!!!) Make sure you wash your pie down your pie-hole with a a refreshing alcoholic beverage. I went for a Harpoon Cider, which was very refreshing. While I'm sad Scups in the Harbor is no more, I'm glad KO Pies has emerged to fill in the space. A great replacement! Hoorah, hoorah!

This place rocks. I've been in here so many times. The Southie location was a 5 to me before coming here, this one is equally worthy. The pies are absolutely delicious. I aim for the pie of the month then my standbys are the Beef Stew and Beef/Cheese. The crust on all the pies is decadent. Flaky, buttery goodness. If you are a pie virgin, the crust will immediately win you over before you get to the filling. Pies are around $6 each. The menu at the Eastie location has more variety. Besides the pies, my husband and I have gotten: Sticky Ribs: tangy glazed, falling off the bone Caesar Salad: Aussie version, excellent! Chickpea Salad: Goes well with the pies to throw some veggies in there Fish Sandwich: Big juicy piece of whitefish on a dressed roll Burger: Done right with egg and bacon Lamington: this is a dessert, really good! The location adds to the charm. It's in the East Boston Shipyard. It sits feet from the water with picnic tables outside. They have local beer and wine too. The owner and people that work there are always so friendly. I had been going to Scup's for years and am so happy KO has found its quirky new home. They fill a big void in the Jeffries Point dining scene.

I went there with friends. It was a bit challenging to find since I traveled there alone, but I was happy to find out that the place with the welcoming patio, picnic tables & music were where I was headed! It should really be labeled as Australian. They have a wide variety of beers, incredible meat pies, a wide variety of desserts. The truly laid back vibe cannot be beat. I got a Braised Lamb Shank Pie as a "Pie Floater," which meant that they topped it with mashed potatoes, mashed peas, and gravy. The crust was the perfect combo of flaky, flavorful, and substantial. The interior of the pie was cooked to perfection. Juicy pieces of lamb shank, peas, etc. The mashed potatoes, mashed peas, and gravy on top made it a decadent, satisfying meal. Another big hit were the potato wedges with sweet chili & sour cream. The sweet chili was great and the wedges were perfectly spiced. I got some grilled chocolate banana bread for dessert. When I go again, I'll definitely get a lambington or the milo ice cream. Perfect place to have dinner with family and/or friends on a summer night!

I'm pretty stingy with my 5's but since this is my first time trying Australian meat pies and they were extremely tasty I'll give KO's a 5. I've been to the location before when it was Scups but even without, the picnic tables out front loaded with hipster was a fairly good indicator I was at the right place. Got the Classic, Beef Stew, Lamb Shank and the monthly special, the braised beef. I had the Classic and it was fantastic. Sadly I only got to eat one because I made the mistake of bringing the box of meat pies to my parents house. I'll be back.

I almost don't want to tell you about this but there can be so many complainy people on yelp that I feel the need to sing the praises of this spot. Also I am hesitant to be unselfish but again, awesomeness deserves to be rewarded. Went here for the second time for brunch pies this morning and cannot say enough about the deliciousness, the atmosphere, the staff and the location. The pies are so tasty; there is lamb and curry and carrots and mushy peas and potatoes and gravy and so much more in just one pie. Magic. And then there is the shipyard location (harbor arts included) with seat yo self picnic tables. And they have beer and bubbles. Also my boo required a jump for his vehicle and one of the cooks/chef, who is a REAL Aussie, gave him the keys and some electricity in a friendly way. I mean seriously, above and beyond.

I love this new outpost. The location is kitschy and cool, and I'm sure quite the happening place during the summertime. The beer/wine selection is perfect. The service is friendly and engaging. Most importantly, the food is still incredible!

I've wanted to try KO Pies for a while now because I love stuffed pastries and pies of all types, in many different cultures, and make pie often myself. I went to the original location in South Boston about a year ago, but it was Sunday and was closed. I was in East Boston on Sunday, so decided to try the new location and was happy to find it open. I'm a vegetarian, but knew from checking online that KO makes a curried vegetable pie, which was what I ordered. It was about the size of a pot pie, with pastry on the top and bottom (as I like). The pastry was perfect, flaky and fresh. The vegetable filling was lightly seasoned -- not overwhelming with curry flavor -- and very good. The whole package was scrumptious, absolutely perfect. As a vegetarian, my tastes gravitate toward ethnic cuisines that are vegetarian friendly, mostly originating in Asia, so Australian food was new to me, but I loved my curried vegetable pie and will definitely go back. It was also a great deal for $5.75.

Thank you once again, Yelp. We went to Piers Park and then stopped here for take out based on Yelp reviews. We had the classic meat pie as well as a lamb one. Appetizer was the Fish cakes. Everything was fantastic. Crust is golden, crispy and flaky. Not dry at all.. the filling was rich and not oily, good ratio of veggies/meat inside for the lamb pie. Fish cakes were good; a little dry but maybe they're meant to be that way; I was just expecting something different, I guess. The price is more than reasonable; 6 dls for a meat pie? Really? There is parking; service was excellent (courteous on the phone, order was right; offered to delay the pies so I could pick it up fresh from the oven, etc); seems like a great place to grab a beer, have a pie and enjoy the view. This is a hidden gem. Definitely worth the trip. Maybe I'll move to East Boston. Hmmm...

Amazing pies! For any expats from New Zealand or Australia, this place is a little slice of heaven. The location is a bit funky and tricky to get to but at the end of the day it adds to the charm. Oh and their sour cream wedges are just like the ones from the other side of the world. Nice beer selection too. We've made some great friends hanging out here, it's got a friendly atmosphere and they put on good events. Much recommended.

Simply excellent. 51% of me wants the world to come and support these guys, 49% of me wants to not tell anybody to keep it a hidden gem. 51% wins, thanks yelp. Food: delicious selection of freshly made, affordable options, appropriate for both carnivores and vegetarians. The pies are just as reliably fantastic as the Southie location, but I was really impressed with the flavors in the fish cakes and crab salad. Drinks: diverse choices of Aussie, Kiwi and local beers and wines (+ red and white sangria, and ciders) - all at reasonable prices. Location: interesting building and docks with relaxed, laid back vibe (with free parking!). The outdoor communal table is a good place to meet new friends while drinking a few cold ones. Service: friendly straight-forward staff, who seemingly make time to get to know their customers on a personal level. Look forward to returning .. again and again ..

Not too many reviews from Aussies here so I thought I'd better write one. Could not believe we wandered into this place (and quite by accident, we live in East Boston and had no idea it was here until we found it on a walk). We first tried their home made hot cross buns at Easter time. Better than what we could find back home. We came back and tried the beer. Well, Coopers comes from my home town. First time I've ever found it outside of Australia, brilliant, this place just gets better. Third time and we tried the pies. Yup, bloody awesome. Better than any I've eaten back home, absolutely no complaints. Next time it was a sausage roll. Just as good as the pie. No wuckas mate, this place is as authentic as it gets, food is fantastic, location is really unique, and there's always a friendly bunch of people hanging out there, enjoying the location, food and drinks. So happy to have found KO, just wish we had something like it back home...... BTW it's worth a trip to eastie just to use the dunny..............

Definite gem. Australian themed laid backness in a crumbling industrial-nautic setting. It is a little difficult to spot, but you go through the security gates and find parking. The building is on the left through the gates #16. The food selection consists of various meat pies, some sandwiches, salads, as well as a good number of deserts. Also a solid beer selection, wine options and more. They even have prosecco for those looking to bubbly it up. We had the standard beef pie, the lamb shank pie, fingerling potatoes, and date pudding with ice cream. All of it was great! I preferred the lamb shank pie though both were good. The potatoes were standard, though they had a hint of tangy spice from the chili seasoning. The date pudding was a great dessert option. Just the right portion for 2 to share! The food is good, but made that much more satisfying by the fact that you feel as if you've discovered a secret enclave. When we arrived around 8p on a Friday there weren't many people there. We wandered in past the inviting outdoor seating area to find a small, clean indoor area with hip beats resounding. The primary outdoor seating is a long wooden communal table. We were able to snag some seats, which was great considering quite a few people started showing up after we arrived. Some seemed to be regulars or locals that had been around before. The seating area overlooks some docks and you can see the water and experience a little bit of the fishy smell. There are a few interesting sculptures on the surrounding buildings along with weeds and industrial refuse. We also sighted two skunks sneaking around on the perimeter. Backwoods experience!! Definitely worth a venture out to the Maverick area!

Delicious pies and sides! Their menu changes often but the pies stay the same with new seasonal/specials added often. My favorite pie is the beef stew. Ridiculous. Husband loves the beef & cheese. Quick & friendly service, too! The only thing I've had that I wasn't a fan of was the hoisin glazed sticky spare ribs but I think I'm just not a fan of the hoisin sauce. Great quick lunch or dinner. One of favorite Eastie spots... Especially when we aren't feeling Mexican or Italian. :) or on Sunday's when so many local places we love are closed!

Talk about the perfect comfort food! We paid a visit to KO Pies in Eastie, which by the way was my first meat pie experience, and my god have a craved them ever since. There are a variety of pies, including pie of the month -- but each has it's own savory experience. We tried the beef and cheese one (that they say was their take on the cheeseburger) and it's like magic in your mouth. I want to eat them for the rest of the fall/winter!! The other pie we hit up was the lamb one, which SHOCKED me. Normally I'd say no one does lamb like the middle easterns and indians...but GIRL WAS THAT GO GOOD PIE. It definitely had more complex spices that sort of danced around in your mouth - definitely fun. It's super casual, get your food at the counter kind of place. Definitely a must-try!

Great place to go eat! Located in a old shipyard with lots of character. The old Scup's on the Harbor location but the food is so much better. Read about this place about a month ago and decided to go today. This might be the coolest place in Boston. Went here on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Owner was super friendly and took our order and then said he's the only one working so it's gonna be a little while. We were not in a rush so we walked over to the pier to see the Nantucket lighthouse boat, a great walk and you see the whole Boston city line. Came back and food was waiting for us: Australian Meat Pie: Outstanding, perfect crust and the filling was a tasty savory beef mixture. Fish Sandwich: Dynamite! Lightly spiced, grilled white fish sandwich with homemade tartare sauce on a French roll. Ate outside on their picnic tables and also they have free parking. Will definitely be back for the sausage rolls, more meat pies, and interesting beer selection....

I work in East Boston occasionally, and when I get the chance I head down to the Shipyard to get a pie. I've only had the pies there, both on their own and as floaters(topped with gravy, potato and peas). All have been excellent. The beef and cheese and braised lamb shank have been my my favorites, but the curried vegetable is excellent as well. They seem to have a pretty good brew list for a small place, and plenty of aussie snacks to try. I would stay far far away from vegemite however. Its homey, different, and simple, and overall an excellent experience.

Cute place. Easy parking. I didn't try too many things on the menu. What I did try was mediocre. The meat in the sausage roll needed more spice/flavor. The last time I had a sausage roll was at Tuck Shop in Chelsea Market (NY), and theirs was heaps better! The meat pies were okay. The beef stew one was too salty. I ended up eating all the puff pastry and leaving some of the filling behind. I'll be back again at some point, but to try others things on their menu - the burger looked tasty. And who doesn't like potato wedges with sour cream & sweet chili sauce? Didn't see any tim tams though. What a shame..

Fun atmosphere, funky location, good beer selection, spicy special is great. Best of all, the water taxi takes you straight into the city from the dock directly out front.

I was really looking to try one of their meat pies so we took the T over to East Boston and headed over to the shipyard. The place was beautiful! It was a nice day out so we ate outside on one of their picnic tables. I got the beef stew meat pie, it was delicious! The meat was nice and tender and so flavorful. My hubby got the Aussie Burger and loved it as well (just had to take the beets out--we're not beets people). The place has a great laid back chill feel to it. Bravo!

The only thing that disappoints me about KO Pies is how I lived about 500 feet away from it for a year and never even knew about it until now! Such a breath of fresh air on a lot of different fronts: location, food, staff, patrons Location is really unique hidden in the shipyard in Eastie on Marginal Street. No view of the city but views of the water and Southie. Amongst Harbor Arts installations, when you see the giant green meat cleaver you're there! I recommend going on a non-90 degree day. No AC inside and you want to get a table outdoors and be comfortable. Food is good! I typically wouldn't select a nice thick meat pie on a summer day when sitting al fresco, but it's a must try. Great chicken skewers and an AWESOME chicken sandwich. I love the casual ordering process and how tiny the bar is. You get a few draft selections, a ton of other beer/wine/sangria options, and CRABBIES anyone?? Staff is very friendly and informative. Ask for suggestions if you get lost on the menu like I was. Australian accents are cool, too. Patrons are friendly and artsy. It's picnic table/community style seating so you'll likely get to know your neighbors. I was there during a Harbor Art walk once and met some of the artists. Hipsters at heart will love this place!

I've been here twice now. My first experience was nearly ruined by a fundraiser for unlikeable children. I mean, that's what the charity was for, unlikeable children. No joke. They all found each other so unappealing there was no frivolity as they shoved miniature meat pies in their little mouths. I didn't donate. The second time was much better. I enjoyed a flaky vegetable curry pie and some hummus. I suggest you take a vegetable curry pie home with you. You know, for late night food emergencies...

I love the shipyard, the menu, the neighborhood, the food, the shipyard, the beer selection. So much potential.....but the lack of table service, those stupid buzzing things to tell you when your food is ready, the clean up after yourself and subsequent dirty tables, and the cranky lady take away from the experience. Place would be 100x better if you ordered at the table and gave your name and they delivered the food and bussed (AND WIPED) the tables, occasionally checked in for beer refills ...the place is not that big and it would make it a real neighborhood feel. Also the cranky lady should consider being less cranky or getting into a different line of work. I like the laid back feel- but the customers should be more laid back than the staff. (and the staff more friendly than the customers) The Floater is a gross name- but soooo good Fish and chips- delish Love the pie of month concept and creativity (sometimes) I don't like peas, and my god those peas are good I think the burger is a disgusting mess but people swear by it.

We've been here many times. Being Australians, we are very particular about our meat pies. The pies at KO are as good as you will find anywhere. In fact we were back in Australia last Christmas and I had several pies at different places and most of them were not as good as KO's pies. The pie floater with mashy peas and gravy is my recommendation for anyone new to pies. The sausage rolls are also great. Finish with a lamington for the full experience. Always a great atmosphere here as well, and the owner and staff are very laid back and friendly.

Completely stumbled across KO Pies after embarking on a "take us someplace good" ride on a Boston Harbor water taxi. After one visit, this no frills, cafeteria-style eatery became a go-to place for us. Great Australian meat pies, good selection of funky beers and authentic desserts/candy from down under. Community tables outside are nice to sit at when the weather is decent. Also has live music on certain nights. Definitely worth checking out!!!

First of all: The place just opened. Second of all: The staff is still getting trained. Third: it's 95 outside and they are in shipyard in a beautiful, repurposed brick building. Fourth: Most places need a few months to get their footing - so don't go visit a brand new restaurant that's not even worked it's way up to the full menu yet and expect perfection. I am saying that for those reviewers who are dissing a place with 2 stars.....the reality of it is that things have to get moving. I have been twice since I live in walking distance and each time met different groups of neighbors with the following feedback: Pies are great. Thank god we have a place to go in Eastie again with a wine and liquor license that serves non Italian food. Variety is important. Crab Salad is awesome. Whatever the other reviewers issue was...several of us has had it on different nights and we are all happy with the amount of food and crab. Sausage rolls were good. Sangria is average, but it's sangria. Overall. A great location. Super nice chef too. Going again tonight.

Excellent food, a great location, a laid back vibe and they're dog friendly which for some reason lends a more cosmopolitan air. Schmooze and nosh with the hipsters and families with kids and their pooches. Very haimish.

When Scups (the prior tenant in this location) it left behind large shoes to fill. The good news if that KO does this and more. Great food (beyond the meat pies try the salads and sandwiches too!). Favorite Pie: beef stew

This is probably the best restaurant recommendation I've received while here in Boston. An English friend of mine was raving about KO and I went with him for his second visit. I'm a hearty comfort food fiend so the idea of serious, authentic meat pies had my mouth watering at the very idea. My mouth got precisely what it wanted. Love the communal vibe of the picnic tables, especially on a warm summer day, and the service was relaxed but attentive. For apps, I ignored my inclination to diversify from meat pastry mode and we ordered a delicious sausage roll each, splitting some potato wedges with their borderline addictive sweet chili sauce. Whenever I hit a new place that has a specialty or offers something traditional, I go straight for it on general principle, so the Classic as a "floater" was a no-brainer. The fresh, flaky crust, beef, onions and gravy are melt-in-your mouth amazing and gotta love the mushy peas and mash. My buddy got the braised lamb shank which I'll have to go for next time, as it was delightful as well...the plan is to have each one on successive visits because I WILL be back and often! Don't think twice about going as KO stand up to its billing as a knockout!

This place is great. The food is homemade and a very friendly atmosphere. The beer was cold and fresh and the staff was friendly. I went in the winter so the seating was a bit limited inside, but in the Summer they seem to have a patio.

Great to have somewhere making [meat] pies in Boston, this is the better of the two locations as you can combine your pie with a cold aussie beer. Love the picnic tables and the additional food selection is nice. Buy a pie to eat and a frozen one for later on. FANTASTIC

I LOVE this place but am a bit hesitant on wanting to write a review because its a hidden gem and unless they plan on expanding the size of this location I don't want too many people to know about it. The PIES are delightful, the service is super Aussie, the atmosphere is fantastic, I almost feel like im back downunder. I'm hoping they continue to expend their menu and aussie beer selections. Definitely I must go to place!

I heard about this place and picked up 3 frozen pies to go - Veggie, Irish Beef, and Lamb. I was planning on eating them in three separate meals with a side dish over the course of a week or so - who wants to eat a meat pie every night, right? I ate all 3 pies within 8 hours. I'm afraid to explain to you how good these things are: they are expertly put together. Flaky golden crust, hearty filling, in just the right combination. There's something about them that is deeply satisfying, definitely a comfort food. I can see why the Aussies are crazy about them!

I've been here more times than I can remember, so i figured it was about time to write a review. I'll start with the one thing i haven't done, just to mention it. They do a Sunday Roast every weekend now and I've always wanted to stop in and try it. The pictures they post on FB and twitter look so very tasty. They've got a bit of everything. Meat Pies, Sausage Rolls, fish cakes, burgers. I haven't had a bad meal there. My wife thought her burger could have been cooked a bit less the one time she ordered one, but she was a fan of all the toppings they put on. I love love love love, that they have Kroneberg here. The beer selection is good and you never know what special beer they might have lurking about all unsuspecting like, waiting to be discovered(MOA Dark, that was a shout out for you). They are dog friendly too. We stopped in over the summer and I was craving something sweet, which is unusual for me. They had some sort of marinated grilled pineapple with coconut ice cream. I actually thought i might need some alone time with the grilled pineapple, just to be with it, maybe sing to it. The best part, is that they are right around the corner from where we live. They cater too, not that I know anything about that. We always joke about their "Yacht Supplies" when we go in. Stop in and try this place. I think you'll like it. Everyone who works there is always super friendly too.

Two words: "The Floater"... I regularly dream about that delicious meat pie concoction. It's so good that I needn't explain it, just order it. S A L I V A T I N G right now just thinking about it!

Love this Australian joint. Very tasty meat pies and fresh healthy salads. Came with friends and seems like a nice place to visit in the summer as it faces the waterfront and harbor. You should try this place. Good for groups too.

I love the staff, cider, and food. This is our group's Thursday night hangout. Great soup specials and chickpea salad, only wish they had more than one type of veggie pie because I would be there more than one night a week!

There's a variety of meat pies, and they all deliver. Pies of the month are always a hit. I recommend getting the pie floater--great value!

Don't judge a book by its cover! Despite being in the dark and lets-face-it run down Shipyard, KO Pies in East Boston hit the mark and I can't wait to go back. Their beef and cheese pie with 'floater' (mash and mushy peas) was absolutley delicious with light and buttery pastry. An added bonus for me was the 'daddy's sauce' found in a bottle on the table. If you're from the U.K you'll know what I'm talking about, yum! Oh and one more thing that made this girl smile, you get a FREE dessert if you and a friend actually eat in there (space a bit limited). The dessert was good - coconut coated sponge cake with icecream topped with maltesers (see U.K comment above). A must go!!!

I love this place! We enjoyed a walk around East Boston and loved all the sculptures in the shipyard, then stopped in for a vegetable pie. And it was GREAT! This place is really cute, friendly, with great food (judging from my one pie). A side note - there is a mural painted on the outside wall of both the Shipyard and South Boston restaurants, done by a South Boston painter whose name escapes me at the moment - nice touch to the work of a local artist. I think I could easily eat here twice a week if it were closer.

Delicious pies! Like nothing I've had before. Really interesting location with great art.

While I had a soft spot for "Scups", which formerly occupied this space, I have to say "I LOVE what you've done with the place!". The new owners have spiffed up, rearranged, and, oh, it's a whole new menu. Australian street food is the new cuisine and never having been "down under" (to the country people! get your minds out of the gutter- or is it just me?) I can't vouch for authenticity but everything was pretty tasty and the unique location is a blend of marina culture and hardscrabble industrial with some guerrilla art thrown in for good measure. The upstairs, uni-sex bathroom is plastered with Russian propaganda posters (with translations). A decent amount of parking is available next to the restaurant, the take cards, beer & wine only, and you have to check-in with the guard at the gate.

How anybody finds this place is beyond me. But it's a treat once you do. It's in an old shipyard where there seems to be some ship-type-stuff happening; prerequisite dilapidated warehouses, old cars, etc. The sort of place you'd expect to see a big black Cadillac Fleetwood discretely idling nearby late at night, as two men in overcoats and hats drop something off of the pier. Fortunately for us, it was daytime. What makes it evident that this is an emerging artist's enclave is the large metal artwork haphazardly placed here and there; a giant sculpture that is 1/2 octopus 1/2 mermaid; a giant butcher's knife, along with some other interesting pieces. The more I looked the less it was a back alley and more a very, very cool place. KO Pies, is immaculate, artsy and minimalistic inside and the food was good; equipped with the sort of trendiness you'd find in the South End or someplace equally as trendy. If you happen upon here, you'll give points for the uniqueness of the locale while enjoying what foods they have to offer. If you're looking to show just how much of a foodie you are, this place is off the beaten path and will give you major street cred.

I was so excited to here that KO Pies was opening a location where Scupps used to be. East Boston doesn't have a huge variety of cuisine choices so a new restaurant is always an event. That being said I was disappointed with the service I received while there. The man who took our order was abrupt and borderline rude. in addition it was EXTREMELY hot inside the restaurant. Not really the most pleasant environment in which to eat a hot pie. I would have loved to sit outside but as it had just rained the tables and seats were soaked. The food was actually quite enjoyable and I'll look forward to returning when they have their full menu up and running. At the very least KO Pies will be my new favorite place to grab a beer and eat some bar snacks because I really can't complain that its a three minute walk from my house.

Meat pies and sausage rolls and much, much more. What really stands out is the flaky pastry. This is really delicious food. I was raised on Scottish meat pies (pork) and these Aussie pies are better. I didn't eat there. I just did take out. The place is in an old shipyard where Scup's used to be. It's a great place to sit outside and watch the water. Next time we'll take a crowd and try out even more of the menu.

Fantastic place and location. A hidden gem. And the food rocks. Highly recommended. If you want to feel healthy while having bacon, get the caesar salad with fish. To die for.

I almost want to rate this place bad so that the crowds go away and KO can return to being our own little secret for us East Bostonians.... we've been semi-regulars since they opened and have enjoyed it each and every time. Early on there were few crowds and we hoped they would continue to stay in business, so we are thrilled to see that so many other people enjoy it here as much as we do. As rustic as the surroundings are, you won't find a more fun and relaxing place to hang out and have some great food with friends. The staff is super friendly, and there are rotating specials to accompany the menus staples. The salads and crispy potato wedges are a great way to prepare for the highlight of the meal - the great little pies. Though they may seem small-ish - don't be tricked - they really make for a pretty hearty meal. Also a great beer/cider/wine selection. Simple casual picnic tables under some tents if you sit outside. Don't miss out on scoping out all the fun art installations in the shipyard, and the million-dollar views of the Boston skyline.

When you go here, you feel like you're doing something interesting. You get to casually wander past the security checkpoint and make believe you're getting away with something. Then you get to look at the random shipyard art, which makes you feel like you're having a casually pleasant surreal dream. Then you hear music. Probably Australian music. Anyone who has shared a multi-bed hostel room in Europe with Australians knows they can be...boisterous..., but here they seem to have channeled their boundless energy into an innovative, functional, and welcoming beer-drinking and meat-eating establishment. The pies are good (I had the beef and cheese), though kind of heavy for me (personal problem) and my friend had the lamb pie, which she loved (full of peas. Again, personal problem). They have lots of salads and interesting-looking apps that I haven't yet tried. I intend to go back, and soon. I've also developed a fantasy about taking the water taxi back and forth between this place and the Barking Crab when the weather gets warm.

Stopped by KO Pies after spending an afternoon at Piers Park relaxing. As others have mentioned, this is in the shipyard and it can be hard to find if you have never been there. There really isn't much of a view, you sit outside at picnic tables looking at the old beat up buildings in the Shipyard. It's an Australian theme restaurant with typical Aussie & English type pies and a good selection of beer. We ordered the BBQ Ribs appetizer and a Beef Pie. The BBQ Ribs were made with an Asian BBQ sauce and were outstanding. The beef pie was well seasoned but too greasy to my liking. If you are just looking for a low key place to grab a quick bite with a solid selection of beers, KO Pies is a good place to stop by. It's hard to give it a 4 or 5 star rating for me as I like to save those for really high end places with unbelievable food. I see KO Pies as being a regular stomping ground for myself and others in Eastie.

We went before they were officially open and very happy with the meal and the service. It was a fun little spot with food as good as the original. Look forward to getting in a few more visits for some more stars :)

We had read that this place was one of those hidden gems - great food, eclectic location, etc. It did not disappoint. We took our two kids and ordered 4 pies (2 beef, a beef stew and a lamb) with sides of garlic mashed and the chickpea salad. The pies were excellent - flaky crust and well spiced filling. The salad was lightly dressed with lots of vegetables. The mashed were just great. The kids loved their food too. By the way, they serve beer too, which goes really well with Aussie food (no surprise there). I also went back recently for a casual business lunch. We ate outdoors and got a great view of the water and the eclectic art. Had the chicken sandwich and it was excellent. If you want to get out of your standard routine and head to a unique place for some great food, this is it.

KO Pies is located in East Boston at the very end of Marginal Street in a dilapidated shipyard that used to be the home of Bethlehem Steel. There are guards at the gate that stop you on the way in. Why, I don't know. However, just mention KO Pies and you're in. The area surrounding the restaurant is not very pretty. The once active dry docks are in a complete state of disrepair and the ocean water is murky and green with moss. The surrounding buildings also look as if they are about to fall into the sea. If this area is slated for regentrification that's great. If not, I can't figure out the attraction KO has for this location. KO is a small structure with a warehouse look on the outside but very modern and contemporary once you enter. This is not a plush restaurant with table service. It is more like a cafeteria with small and communal tables. You order your food at the counter and serve yourself at your table. The pies are kind of like shepherds pie without the corn and mashed potatoes. The pies are small (approx 5" ) with a somewhat thick flaky crust. The beef pies are seasoned nicely but could use more filling. At $6.00 per pie, they are not cheap. I ordered 4 more to take home with me...two beef stew, two lamb. The lamb was OK but again, not enough filling. The beef stew was all vegetables and no meat?? Unfortunately I don't think the pies are good enough to warrant a return.

(5)Heather G.

Hi Sam!
(4)Amanda S.
(4)Jose M.
(2)Jeff S.
(2)Derek D.

(4)Mantis T.
(5)Qudsia S.
(4)Christine P.
(5)Eloy Q.
Go see why.
(5)Kylie T.
Simple straight up Aussie Pies. True blue service and cred, this is no fake wannabe joint. It's a diamond in the rough and worth the venture to new grounds for a hearty basic lunch. On a nice day, enjoy the sun and seating outdo doors in the shipyard.
(4)Daniella C.

Great food. Outside seating with games and a view.

Superb , delicious , authentic pies ! Mushy peas as they should be .. Ice cream sandwiches yummy .. Total hidden gem
(5)Kimella D.
With love, A pie lover :-)

don't have the luck to run into its burger day, only have beef pie and sausage sandwich, not a fan. It locates in a parking area.

Yum!
(4)Wham S.

(5)Julian M.
(5)Brittany O.
Love this place. Great outdoor seating in a hidden spot in Eastie. I recommend getting your pie as a floater though the crust can be on the drier side without gravy.
(5)Android A.
Pies are of mediocre quality, same goes for the sausage rolls and specials. Price is expensive. Servers do as they please. Not a happy customer.
(2)Hannah G.
Great food! Great service! Cute girl with the bun was very friendly and accommodating to my needs.
(5)Andrew N.
I tried this place on a rainy day and really glad I made the effort. Ordered the stewed lamb pie and it was delicious. Beer on tap and friendly service that's hard to beat. Very good experience overall.
(4)Marisa H.
Friendly service and yummy veggie burger and chickpea salad. Not to mention the potato wedges! Small spot but a good amount of community tables and high tops.
(5)Allison S.
(4)David S.
Curried veg pie has a nice crust and is really well seasoned. The veg are still crisp and fresh too (a huge plus). Don't let the location throw you off, this is a hidden gem!
(4)AARISH P.
cool place, different, in a nice setting with the shipyard etc. - the pies were good, esp the beef stew
(5)Matt K.
(5)Rachel S.
(5)Andrew P.
Love this place. Definite summertime go to. Great outdoor area on the water to enjoy a beer and a pie. Food is great and staff is always friendly. Make the trek from Maverick Station. It's totally worth it.
(5)Stephen L.
(4)Sheri M.
(5)Michael C.
(5)Jeff D.
(5)Alyssa K.
Great location. Food was delicious and inexpensive. I wasn't too crazy about their version of the mashed peas. I ordered take-out but the ambience is very cool. They seem to have a healthy sense of humor.
(5)Francine W.
(5)Emily L.
(5)Christina E.
(5)Martin W.
(5)H. Deborah S.
(4)Joe A.

(2)Trey A.
(5)K F.
Such a fun location. They even provide board games for dining in.Several choices of beer.Desserts are great.Must get a floater with your pie Everything has been delicious
(5)Katie L.
(5)Candy W.
Meat pies! mmMmMmm The crust is just wonderful, it's perfectly flaky!
(4)Dv M.
(4)Shad S.
(5)Meaghan H.
Absolutely delicious food and wicked cool owners! A hidden gem at the shipyard. Delicious craft beers. Try the veggie burger it's unreal.
(5)Tiffany V.
(4)Victoria G.

(4)Sue H.
(5)Julie R.
(5)Eliza F.
(5)Justin S.
Love, love, love. There nothing better than coming here in the summer, sitting in the shipyard, and drinking a cold one. The pies are awesome!
(5)David G.
(5)Loni Z.
(5)Katherine D.
I love this new outpost. The location is kitschy and cool, and I'm sure quite the happening place during the summertime. The beer/wine selection is perfect. The service is friendly and engaging. Most importantly, the food is still incredible!
(5)Blake G.
(5)Rene Q.
Hmmm...
(5)Cosmin L.
(5)P L.

Have eaten here several times. Food is consistently good. Meat pie has good flavor, flakey crust, no complaints at all. Well, maybe one. Fifty types of beer but no root beer?

(4)Mike H.
Excellent food, a great location, a laid back vibe and they're dog friendly which for some reason lends a more cosmopolitan air. Schmooze and nosh with the hipsters and families with kids and their pooches. Very haimish.
(5)Chris M.

(5)John B.
This place is great. The food is homemade and a very friendly atmosphere. The beer was cold and fresh and the staff was friendly. I went in the winter so the seating was a bit limited inside, but in the Summer they seem to have a patio.
(5)Pete B.
Great to have somewhere making [meat] pies in Boston, this is the better of the two locations as you can combine your pie with a cold aussie beer. Love the picnic tables and the additional food selection is nice. Buy a pie to eat and a frozen one for later on. FANTASTIC
(5)Mary D.
(5)Mark O.

(4)Josie K.
I love the staff, cider, and food. This is our group's Thursday night hangout. Great soup specials and chickpea salad, only wish they had more than one type of veggie pie because I would be there more than one night a week!
(4)Paul B.

(5)Carla C.
(4)Sarah P.
Delicious pies! Like nothing I've had before. Really interesting location with great art.
(5)Chris B.

(3)George C.
(5)G T.
Fantastic place and location. A hidden gem. And the food rocks. Highly recommended. If you want to feel healthy while having bacon, get the caesar salad with fish. To die for.
(5)Stephen R.

(4)Benjamin T.
(3)Carlos B.
We went before they were officially open and very happy with the meal and the service. It was a fun little spot with food as good as the original. Look forward to getting in a few more visits for some more stars :)
(5)Steve C.
