Great Mexican chain restaurant! Chili was not that spicy, and tasty! Fish taco was fried cod taco, and it perfect matches with soft taco! They serve great Mexican salad!beans and chickens were the best combination

I grabbed lunch at Herrera's earlier this week. I had the taco salad with pulled pork. The portion size is more than enough for lunch. I liked that the salad came in a big tortilla shell. The pork definitely tasted better than it looked. The salad was good overall, but nothing special. I think it was lacking some ingredients. The employees were very friendly. I would go back and try some other menu items.

Not bad, per se, but the one star is for the use of "authentic". There is no "authentic" Mexican dish with American-style sour cream and Taco Bell-style shredded cheese, tacos with more than onion and cilantro/pico de gallo/salsa/etc., nor burritos stuffed with rice and beans (also an American take on a Mexican staple). For American food, it's not bad, but there should be some truth in advertising.

After hearing great things about Herrara's I decided to try it. Had the Pollo Asado burrito with tortilla chips and salsa. I was so disappointed. It was only slightly better than Chipotle (which I consider horrible to mediocre). My friend got the steak quesadilla which she let me have a slice of. It was good, so that's why it's two stars instead of one.

I was incredibly disappointed with this place. I know I'm in new England and therefore authentic Mexican food is a unicorn, but still! I've had a Mexican food in New Hampshire and Maine better than this! I ordered the pollo asada burrito combo. The medium burrito was a proper lunch sized portion so that was good, but unfortunately it lacked in flavor. It was bland. The chips were okay, but the salsa tasted like a watery spice-less marinara. The prices were cheap, and the food was prepared quickly, and the decor is cute-- but the food is sub-par and I will not be returning.

Great for days when you want a healthy black bean soup, or for when you want to gorge yourself on a chicken mole enchilada. Herrera's is the real deal - the food is fresh, the menu is extensive, the prices are reasonable. The friendly staff here will adapt any dish to help you get what you want (and mostly won't charge you more for it!). Add some rice to your soup? Get some extra salsa? Make your breakfast burrito without a tortilla? Why not! The line can get really long at lunch but it's worth it for the extensive menu options. I also love coming here for breakfast - their burritos are better than most omelettes. Now, if only they would make their guac a little earlier in the day so I could put it on my eggs...

So you've had too much Pedro's and need to switch it up. Hop on over to Herrara's for a more built out menu and some new scenery. They have fajita burritos, taco salads (with the huge taco crunchy bowls), and a few other options that can really boost your day. The service here really gets the job done, and it's not too much of a burden to find a table for you and your pals. You'll see some Herrara's burrito stands around DTX - don't stray from these, but definitely hit up the brick & mortar.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here. Best burritos in Boston. I don't know what it is about Herrera's but they are tasty. A bit spicy, good mix of flavors, and it fills you right up. I stick to bean and cheese with hot sauce and guac, Affordable, filling, delicious. They also have other food besides burritos that look great, but I've never gotten them. Pro Tip #1: They have a buy 12 get one free next to the register for burritos.... get one of those cards and have em stamp it! Pro Tip #2 Their chips are OK, but not salted, if you like salty chips BYOS

So disappointing. I love this cart. I've been going there for years and have never been disappointed. But I was told that people have complained that their hot sauce is too hot so they don't serve it anymore. Ummm what??? Its hot sauce, it's supposed to be hot! So instead of telling people to get over it they take it away from everyone; yet another example of coddling to the whiny babies of the world.

Being a SoCal native, I have been sorely disappointed with the "Mexican" food in New England. Generally speaking, it's terrible! TERRIBLE Herrera's is the exception to the rule. It's yummy and more closely related to what I eat in East LA. Anyone who says that burritos aren't authentic if they don't have rice and beans in them is truly out of their element. A true vegetarian burrito should have rice, beans, cheese, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream (add guac if you want it). You should also have the option of ordering the burrito "wet." If you've never had a wet burrito, sometimes called "enchilada style," I highly encourage you to try it at Herrera's! (Grilled veggies in a burrito is called TexMex.) I generally stick to the vegetarian burrito, but I've had a carne taco once and it was also delicious. The food is reasonably priced, too. TexMex is not Mexican food. Herrera's is the closest thing to good down-to-earth Mexican I've had in New England. This review made me hungry. Better go get a burrito!

This is not your date night destination but a quick taco in a pinch is great. The selection is fresh and the staff are super friendly. They do have specials that look interesting and the prices are very reasonable. Cant be beat to cure a taco craving!

Delicious burritos. The pescado burrito is a delectable treat. I like their guac too. Service is so so when you go during a non-busy hour. I've been in when workers were chatting with friends and while they took my order and made me a delicious burrito, I like a bit more attentive service. When it's busy, they move quickly, and I appreciate that.

Four stars for great food and service. I love to go here for lunch both for take out and dining in. However I did take away one star because they have such limited hours.

Broccoli on a burrito is an interesting add-on but I think it works. This place serves a decent steak burrito. My wife asked for spicy and they obliged with just the right kind of spice. It wasn't the "I need milk quickly" or the "Huh, is there one flake of crushed red pepper?" spice. It was the " hmm, this is good. That had a bit of a kick to it" spice. Well done and this was recommended to us on the street so great job friendly local. The steak was good as was everything about it.

After being told I HAD to try Herrera's, I was finally pursuaded...and happy to be. People may frown upon this, but my first visit I didn't opt for a burrito. I got their taco salad which was really good. Good portions of chicken and a huge scoop of guac! On my second visit I finally caved and got the pollo burrito. It was definitely one of the better burritos I've had. I got it with brown rice and of course with some guac again (it's really fresh and tasty). I am sure Herreras has taken advantage of their location and good reviews because it shows in the price - but definitely worth it!

  • Tawny A.

The burritos were good. Taquitos, ok. Tacos good. Its like all the fast food fresh mex places in L.A. Its not authentic, but its great for lunch. The rice that came with my veggie burrito was unflavorful as were the black beans. The burrito was pretty tasty but I wouldn't go back again.

I've had a burrito craving for the past week so I decided to try the chicken burrito. I thought it was okay, nothing special -- it could have used more cheese and pico de gallo. I guess it's comparable to other East Coast burritos and maybe I'm spoiled by Cali taco shops, but it didn't satisfy my craving. Everyone here was nice and I got my food pretty quick -- I'll come back to try the soup!

    (3)
  • Harri S.

It was pretty decent Mexican food. Made me miss California more though. They do an assembly line that would make Henry Ford proud. Unfortunately the guac is typically extra, the carne is not that well marinated, but the pollo and carnitas are pretty decent. Also they have horchata, jamaica machines. I'm going to go now and sob for Mexican food.

Still on the hunt for great Mexican food in Boston. Rolled in here and tried the Chicken Burrito w/ Pollo Colorado. Meh. As a bonus, I really didn't feel well after I ate it. There are better options in town, I would pass on Herrera's. Here's my current rundown on Boston's Best Mexican: yelp.com/list/bostons-be…

Wow. I've been working next to this place for almost an entire year and I never ventured in. Generally, I'm not a huge burrito fan (or so I thought) because they always made me feel sick to my stomach after eating them. Once I learned to steer clear of Qdoba and the likes I could enjoy them. Herrera's is fresh and real and good. Try the pollo colorado, you won't be disappointed. Oh yeah, great prices, too.

I love this place for lunch. I work up the road from there and i go here for fish tacos whenever my wallet (not expensive at all but I like to save whenever I can!) and waistline can afford it. I have had a few things on the menu but my lunch of choice is the fish taco plate. This comes with two soft tacos, rice, and beans. The tortilas are thrown on the grill to get warm while the white fish is fried (see why I have to worry about the waistline). The tacos are dressed with lettace, diced tomatos, and a ranchero (?) sauce. The sauce totally makes the tacos. It is creamy and spicy. Taco plate is served with yellow rice and really good beans. Everything remains warm for my 5 minute walk back to my office. The space is small and area where the line is can be crowded at times; which is why i generally call in my order ahead of time. They accept debit/CC is you bill is over $5, which you can do simply. A good thing to note is that they have 2 carts in downtown crossing that serves tacos and burritos. I have never gone to them (since I never ever carry cash) but i know people that love going there since they are closer to our office and the lines are not as long. I really suggest this place for lunch if you are in the area.

Herrera's are what a mexican joint should be. Large menu of mexican offerings, fast workers, fresh ingredients, and tastey food. I am a huge fan of their fish burritos. They use fresh cod and it's fried perfectly, still moist. The creamy chipotle sauce they use offers a nice kick to the burrito. You can choose from a regular corn tortilla or wheat. They also offer brown rice too now. Prices are reasonable! A must try...

I ordered the carne asada burrito. It came to $6.15 with tax for a medium burrito. Nothing amazing, but it was good. It had a good amount of carne asada, rice, beans, and salsa. If the carne asada would have been juicier, I would have felt more inclined to review this place a little more favorably. The carne asada is like everywhere else in Boston i've tried a burrito. I think the fact that all the ingredients are out like an assembly line has to do with the freshness. The place seems to get a good amount of traffic during the weekday. I didn't have to wait long to get my food. I'd only come here if I was in the area and hungry for a burrito, quesadilla, or torta.

A lovely addition to my downtown lunch rotation. The burritos here are good and reasonably priced, particularly for the size (a medium is about $5). The Pollo Colorado is a good spin on your average chicken burrito, with the chicken marinated in a tasty chile sauce. I've only recently branched out to try the tacos and soup. The veggie taco was only ok, but partially because I don't care for most of the veggies they use (carrots, cauliflower, etc.). My bad. However, the black bean soup is great and I love the option to add cilantro and hot sauce (and considering I love both, I always do). One of the better burrito choices in downtown Boston

No good. - I got two soft tacos for lunch, to eat there. They were served on wax paper in a basket, but didn't look like tacos. They were just stuff dumped on corn tortillas, not wrapped up or anything. Well, I did my best and tried to eat them - like a taco - with no success. The corn tortillas were soaking wet and fell apart. Also, the tortillas are so small, it's impossible to pick these up and not have all the stuff fall all over the place. I wasn't too upset at first, so I used a fork and knife. It's terribly awkward to eat that way, since it's served in a basket and it's hard to cut. Also, as I was eating, I noticed I had cut through the paper - did I just eat paper? I don't think I did! I hope not!! Stupid presentation and messy assembly of a simple dish: freaking TACOS. They tasted, OK. Fresh, at least. The ground beef was OK but the pork one was better. If it wasn't such a pain in the ass to eat, I might have given this a much better review. I'm not going back.

I'm such a fan of their chicken vegetable soup--so that's really the only thing I ever get here. I've gotten their chicken tacos--not excellent, but decent. But on a cold, gross day (which is most of the days of the year in Boston), their chicken vegetable soup is the best thing since sliced bread!

I am very lazy. Herrera's is approximately 16 steps from my office doorway. If it was farther away, would I enjoy it as much? I think so. Maybe I wouldn't be such a shamelessly frequent visitor, but I would still be able to down a medium grilled chicken burrito (without sour cream or hot sauce, but with guacamole) in under 5 minutes. Will definitely be back, probably on Monday.

Oh Herrera's. Boy do I miss you. I haven't been to Boston since I graduated from college in 2009, and I still think about this place. The steak is out of control. Get a burrito. It's one of the best quick/burrito cart-type burritos out there.

Stopped in here for lunch during the week and was pleasently surprised. The place isnt too big but has a few tables on the inside to sit. The food was cheap and tasted pretty good. I would come back if I was craving Mexican again.

  • Ryan M.

Big time burrito fan and this place does not disappoint. Minutes from Park Street, Herrera's is a great spot to stop in and grab some food. Admittedly not that large inside, it is plenty big enough for you to grab some food with a couple friends. Great place to enjoy some delicious, inexpensive food during the work day. The walk to the bathroom is a bit sketchy as it takes like 5 minutes to go through the maze to get there but it is definitely worth your while as a good lunch spot.

  • Beverly G.

Maybe it's just cause I'm originally from Southern California (where the Mexican food is pretty uniformly spectacular), but I think Herrera's is just all right. I once had their chicken mole burrito (I think they only have it at the food stand they operate in front of the Downtown Crossing CVS across the street from H&M), which was way too sweet and didn't have enough spice. I know mole has cocoa in it, but seriously. I like the pork with chile verde though; the pork is stewed so that it's quite tender, though it could have used more chile. Still, when I want Mexican food, and I'm in the Downtown Crossing area, it does in a pinch.

  • Charles K.

I will preface this review by saying that I go to Herrera's quite a bit since it is right around the corner from where I am currently living. That aside, it is still the best Mexican food I have found in Boston. The prices are reasonable, though they slowly keep pushing them up. The ground beef for the tacos and enchiladas was actually better around a year ago than it is now, as it is somewhat runny now. They try to have daily specials, and I recommend that you try those. The best one that I have found is the "Beef Enchiladas in Mole Sauce" that is only available on Wednesdays. The seating inside is somewhat limited and they do get crowded around lunch time, but they process the orders fairly quickly. My main complaint is that they are only open until 4PM on weekdays and closed on weekend.

    (4)
  • Ben J.

This place is fine. Not spectacular, not terrible. The food is reasonably priced and reasonably tasty. The restaurant was clean but small. There were lots of vegetarian options (although I am a meat eater through and through), which were clearly indicated on the menu board. Not much seating, so probably not great for groups. Still, fine for a quick carryout taco or burrito.

  • Angel M.

Ummm, excuse me. I dont even know, like...I dont even know, what kind of park street pigeons are feasting on my tasteless burrito right now. I had the chicken burrito, some Area 51 stylized rice, chunks of soft rocks, oh wait, I mean, black beans, some government issued "pico de gallo" (more like ketchup con onions), the most random species of lettuce, squirts of milk (sour cream?), and like, the flour tortilla was like a little hot or something. A couple of bites and I immediately chucked it, couldnt let it go to a complete waste, to the birds. And with only a lil bit of time left over went to my back up frozen lunch.

  • Teddy H.

This was my first time here. I was running some errands at lunch and decided to stop in. I got the enchiladas and was pretty disappointed. The sauce tastes like the sauce from spaghettios (which I love) but not what I was hoping for on my meal. Burrito express around the corner is a much better option.

    (2)
  • Maria B.

Love Herrera's. It's oh so conveniently located around the corner from my office so I tend to go here pretty frequently for their delicious black bean soup. Can't recommend that stuff enough- and it's super cheap! Their veggie burritos are excellent too

  • Caroline R.

Yummy is the first word that comes to mind after eating my first burrito there yesterday. I have long been a chipotle fan (I just moved to Boston, so I haven't been able to experience the many great burrito places here yet) and I think I am changing my mind! Went here for lunch during work. The service was fast and I was surprised about the number of options you have. The fillings were oh so fresh and they even have yogurt if you don't want sour cream (which I find to be a very nice option). I ordered a bean and cheese and was completely satisfied when I was finished (which says alot considering I am a huge carnivore!) Prices were reasonable and will allow you to visit several times during the week.

  • Marlene M.

Great for lunch. This is my go-to spot when I'm craving Mexican food. The prices are reasonable, the interior is clean and the staff are always very kind and helpful. Though it may not have as many unique menu options as the surrounding chain burrito restaurants, the fresh ingredients and authenticity rank it above Qdoba or Chipotle in my book.

Ordered a fish taco. It was good, but nothing special. What ticked me was that I had to ask for my change back while the stoned cashier just stared at my t*ts. Helloooo, I handed you a twenty for a 3 dollar taco, yes I would like my change back. Idiots.

  • Diana G.

I go to Herrera's for lunch on occasion because it's fast, filling, reasonably priced, and consistently tasty. I find this Herrera's to be better than the cart that's in the Transportation building because there are more menu choices, and the food here is actually hot. :o I am a fan of their Super-sized Steak Fajita Wrap, but I also enjoy their taco salads & burritos (with guacamole). The only thing I feel they could approve upon is their sour cream. It is like a watered-down version that they squirt out of a bottle - not exactly how I would do it at home!

this review is for the burrito cart approximately in front of wendy's in downtown crossing, a.k.a. the wendy's that once gave me a pube salad (and no, that's not some fancy new sexual position, to my knowledge anyway). BEST BURRITOS (BECAUSE THERE HAVE BEEN MANY) I'VE HAD IN A REALLY LONG TIME. this is coming from a umass slamherst bueno y saño junky. all the meats have great flavor/consistency/moistness (ew) and i totally don't get how they can manage that on such a little cart. the carnitas is my personal favorite but i've been happy with everything else. the guac is worth the extra dollar and i'm really excited to fill my punch card. i think it's seven bucks for a large with guac. yes, i get the large. it's very refreshing to get a rolled-up meal of fresh food in this area of town. i can't speak for the cheese or the sour cream, but all the other stuff they put in the burritos is pretty amazing.

    (5)
  • Mark M.

Mobile burrito cart in downtown crossing, how I adore you. Street-based food vendors are usually not my first choice. But I had heard many a great thing about this particular source for burritos so I had to check it out. Don't let the curb-side venue deter you. They're really good. I'll note the only type I ever get is the Pollo Colorado w/ Guac and jalapenos. I just love ordering that particular one because you can sing it's name to that old standard conga melody... Poy-yo-col-or-ah-DO!.....Poy-yo-col-or-ah-DO! Go ahead. Get this Burrito and starty a conga line in the middle of the DTX and try NOT to have a great day. Impossible.

This is a great little Mexican place, perfect for a quick lunch. They even serve breakfast! Delicious and more authentic than Taco Bell. Service is fast and efficient. Seating may be difficult to find. and they're only open during the week.

  • Steve V.

I go here regularly for delicious food, friendly service, and an innovative menu. I especially like the fish burritos and the carnitas burritos, but my wife prefers the Mexican sandwich. Everything is always fresh, the rice is amazing, and the meats are delicious. I try to eat healthy food, and enjoy the fact that Herrera's food doesn't seem overly salty or fatty but it still has plenty of flavor. I've been a fan of this company since Henry Herrera was operating his own push cart. He maintains a tradition of quality his restaurant-chain competitors just can't reach.

    (5)
  • Heather G.

I have adored the burritos here since they had but a lonely cart on Washington street. The grilled veggie is my absolute favorite, as the veggies are perfectly seasoned and grilled to the consistency where they're just a bit crunchy still (and thus still have all their vibrant color), but not raw. Meat-options are also great, but I'm a sucker for a perfectly-grilled vegetable. They load the burritos up with toppings and fillings, and for your money, it's a very filling meal. I have not tried any of the other items, however, as i am *really* stuck on the burritos.

    (4)
  • K J.

The review and the update is just for the cart. They have moved to Washington Street opposite the Marshalls store. No poblano sauce the past few times I have been here which narrows down the choice to chicken/pork/veggie for the burritos. The rice is sometimes mushy (from the summer heat ?) and drags the quality down. Plus my rating this place 5 stars initially was probably a little over exuberance ;-)

Yummy! I love their Chicken and vegetable soup. Big chunks of chicken and an ample amount of veggies. You can add rice, cilantro, and hot sauce. It also comes with tortilla chips on the side. It's very filling and less than $4! Their burritos are really good as well. But I can't finish one myself so I usually stick with the soup. Perfect for cold snowy days! Quick, cheap, and has friendly service.

Chicken soup. Srsly. I met a friend here for lunch yesterday. I'd never been, but figured it was much like any other burrito place. (And, well, I ain't no dummy, I checked the reviews on Yelp!) He said, "Here's what I recommend: we get the chicken soup. Best deal in the city." He was totally right: lunch for two for less than $7! We both got a sizable carton of chicken soup, chock full o' *chunks* of real chicken and fresh veggies, complete with the tastiest thin-crispy tortilla chips ever (I didn't feel the corn bloat afterwards, thankfully), and it was filling. You get your choice of adding rice, cilantro, and/or hot sauce to the soup, and from what I could tell, it was all included in the bargain basement criminal price. Who says cheap, fast, and tasty is an impossible combo? We did our lunch take-away (a rare warm day in winter deserves a trip to eat on a bench on the Common), so I didn't get the dining-in experience. I will say every seat in the place was taken, the line moved really quickly, the food prep looked on the up-and-up, and the rice was almost neon orange-yellow. I'll try to get a burrito next time, if I can resist the Siren song of the soup...

I've been going here for years. They also operate the carts downtown. It's a good, quick, tasty burrito. Pretty much the only edible burrito in Downtown Boston. The bean & cheese burrito is good and vegetarian (no fat in the rice), and the cod fish burrito is not traditional, but tasty nonetheless.

Mmm...Mexican breakfast. I don't find myself downtown in the morning very often, but when I do I always hope I can work in a stop at Herrera's for a breakfast burrito. They are inexpensive and delicious, but they aren't ridiculously large. That means I don't have to waste any, nor will I feel overstuffed if I finish the whole thing. I usually don't enjoy chorizo, but they put in just enough so that the eggs are packed with flavor but not overwhelming. Good stuff.

  • lindsay b.

You will never find burritos as large, cheap, and delicious, anywhere. I've tried quite a few places, all over the Boston downtown area, as well as other cities I've visited/lived in, and nothing has ever beat Herrera's. It's one of the things I miss most about Boston now that I've moved away. The bean and cheese burrito is delicious and filling enough to satisfy any carnivore. The regular size is a meal and a half in itself, only attempt the super if you are feeling very ambitious. The quesadillas are also large, and you can get blacks beans or veggies inside of it, which I highly recommend. Their guacamole is also exceptionally good, so don't miss out. So skip the boloco a few doors down and be sure to go to Herrera's for the best burrito in Boston.

WORST HOME-FRIES EVER. These things are an abomination and an embarrassment to potatoes the world over. They have somehow managed to remove both flavor and texture from them. :'( That being said, their breakfast burritos are pretty solid and the eggs are cooked fresh for you rather than sitting in a bin waiting for your arrival (I'm looking at you Qdoba!). They manage to pull this all off without making you late for work. I was out in less than three minues, good job there. One thing with breakfast, everything needs salt. I never salt anything, but their stuff needs a dash or two...sometimes three. Also, if you get there early enough you can watch them making taco salad shells. It's kinda cool to know some places still prepare their food rather than buying it by the truck-load. Lunch burritos are a'ight. Nothing terribly special, the rice they use varies from ok to downright awful and they could certainly use less. Lunch does not need salt. I think the rice takes care of that pretty well. They have potential to do great things, hopefully they'll step it up a bit. In the meantime you could do worse for breakfast or lunch. Seriously though, stay away from the home-fries :(

This place is awesome. Awesome salsa. Fantastic burritios. And, I just tried a fish taco and am tempted to haul ass back down there and get about 500 more.

These are excellent burritos, the best downtown. The guys at the cart speak little English but are super friendly and fold those burritos with mastery. I always get the medium steak for $5.50 which is much more flavorful than the chicken. The veg burrito is good and would be even better if the veggies were grilled, not steamed. Ask for extra hot sauce because it is not very hot. Even though I work 10 minutes away, I get lunch here a couple times a week. Except during the ridiculously long time they were using wet, Old El Paso-like salsa because of the killer tomato scare. But now the fresh tomato salsa laced with onion and cilantro is back. Street food love.

Best breakfast burrito in Boston! I wish I could have one every day!

On a really cold day I bought three burritos and put them down my pants. It kept me warm all day. AND they still were warm when I ate them at the end of the day. Henry Herrera is my hero. Eat three Beano's and and a Pepcid and go to town. It's all good and cheap.

Without a doubt, they do not lie in their advertising: they are "Boston's best burritos" indeed. I recommend the super steak burrito with hot sauce. Delicioussssss....

I read couple of reviews and went to this place (in Temple St - downtown Boston). I have had much better tasty burrito in Boston. The positive thing is its cheap cost $5 for non-veg and $5.25 for Veg burrito.

Great prices, AMAZING fish burritos! I wish they were closer to my job but totally worth the trek! A total gem in downtown crossing!

Yum yum yum! I've never been to the actual Herrera's, but I'm at one of the carts (Summer St or Washington St) all the time. The burritos are huge! I love getting the veggie fajita one, which comes with rice and beans, salsa, and a pepper and onion concoction. Not only is it delicious, but it's really filling. $5 gets you a regular size, and $6 gets you a super size. The former is plenty, while the latter is extra fun. It's a great lunchtime cheap eat in the Downtown Crossing area... And there's not nearly enough of that.

It's tiny, it's always crowded and it's not in a great location, but without a doubt, Herrera's has the best burritos in boston; hands down. Number 1 with a bullet. If they delivered to the north end, I would get burritos from here almost every day.

You get what you pay for here. Got a steak taco salad and the steak was kind of dry.

The Cart in the middle of DTC has good Burritos. I get the fajita wrap which with my specifications entails: rice, cheese, guac, salsa, hot sauce, steak, grilled onions and peppers and sour cream. It is superb. Not cheap for a street vendor (Large is $6.50 plus a buck or so for guac), but very good.

quality, quick mexican food. The breakfast burrito is delicious. One star off because they serve fair trade, organic coffee in styrofoam cups. Come on guys, either youre for or against the environment/ sustainability...

i go here almost daily for lunch. i love it so much because their beans + rice are actually 100% vegetarian (which is hard to say at many other mexican joints). my typical lunch? black bean soup with hot sauce + cilantro + a side of chips + guac. less than $5 and i'm a full, happy girl.

I am in love with Herrera's burritos. MMM... I go here for lunch atleast once a week and get the steak burrito with sour cream and guacamole. The guacamole here is better than other burrito places in Boston -- not too watery but not overly chunky. The salsa is very tasty and their beans are always cooked to perfection. One medium burrito keeps me full all day -- it's like two meals in one. There have been many arguments amongst me and my burrito obsessed co-workers over who has the best burrito -- Boloco, Anna's or Herrera's and my vote definitely goes to Herrera's.

For breakfast, try one of their breakfast burritos. It's a great way to start the morning. If you're a sauce fan like me, ask for extra ranchero sauce. Mmmm.... The fish tacos and burritos are outstanding! I think the secret may be in the chipotle sauce that they use. Whatever it is, it is delicious! The Taxquena Salad, which also includes black beans, roasted corn, and fresh salsa, is extremely tasty as well. Don't forget to add steak or chicken to that. Their homemade chicken soup is perfect when it's cold out. For a heartier soup, have them add rice. Price is moderate. If you're broke as a joke, they normally allow you to purchase sides, i.e, rice and steak. Enjoy!

This place is does not have the best mexican food in Boston or the north shore, but it is very good. They make good fajitas and they have quality sour cream and guacamole. They do not skimp on those things either. It is a very popular place and I think people hype it up too much sometimes. You can find their sidewalk vendors in downtown crossing.

I have been a loyal customer for years at this location because it is right around the corner from my work. Today will be the last time I ever eat there!! I try to stay healthy, so I have a special request that I ask for everytime: chicken, vegetables, salsa & guacamole. No tortilla, no beans, no rice, no chips, which they usually include in the orders. There is one very nice employee who knows exactly what I want and rings me up for $8.03. They've always given me a small to-go box half filled with veggies and half filled with chicken for this price. The current manager instructed his employee to provide less than a third of the box full of veggies & 1/2 the normal serving of chicken that they've been providing. He informed me that this really is the normal serving for what they've been charging and if I want what they've been doing for me for the last 5 years...then I'd need to pay more. That is not the way to treat a loyal customer. $8.03 for a few pieces of vegetables, less than half a cup of chicken, and some salsa is ridiculous. I was willing to pay that when they'd give me a good serving of veggies that I could fill up on. Never again, they've lost my business and I encourage everyone in the Park St. area to think again before coming to this business. They obviously don't value repeat business.

I went here for lunch today. I got the medium burrito lunch special for about seven bucks and some change. It included a medium burrito (I got steak), a small drink and a side of chips and salsa. The chips and salsa were pretty good. Homemade chips and the salsa was pretty good, too. Medium spiciness. The chips were crunchy and fresh tasting. The burrito was pretty good too. It was pretty large. I couldn't finish it. The steak was tasty enough and not too tough and chewy like some places. There was a large amount of black beans and rice. I found the sour cream was a little runny. I considered the guacamole, but I shied away due to the $1.00 up charge. (I just didn't want to spend it at an unknown place at lunch time. I might opt for it next time). The price was right and the food was pretty good. Not the best I have ever had, but definitely good. It was quite crowded and I was glad that I got mine to go, because there were no seats to be had when I got my order. The service was quick and pleasant also.

Having lived out west (CO) for almost 6 years I definitely miss good burritos (i'm not going to get into the whole American-Mexican food vs. authentic food from Mexico discussion), but Herrera's are some of the best I have found. I have never been to the restaurant, but after a co-worker turned me on to the cart (by Border's in Downtown Crossing) it has become a staple of my diet. I know you are probably thinking "Cart food? Won't it make me sick?" but this food is definitely not sketchy at all. The burritos are cheap and delicious, and the line, although long, moves quickly. If you live or work downtown, and like burritos, I definitely recommend hitting up this burrito cart.

  • John C.

Herrera's carts (on Summer and Washington) say it all -- "Boston's Best Burrito!" A few blocks away on Temple Place is the full menu at Herrera's Mexican Grill, and whatever your preference, you can't go wrong (taquitos, nachos, quesadillas, etc.), but make it a burrito before anything else. For anyone unfamiliar or in doubt, the ultimate test to this 5-star review is to stop by one of their carts in Downtown Crossing shortly around noon and get in line for their Super Steak with sour cream and hot sauce. The proof will be in how long you'll have to wait AND then how much you'll enjoy eating it.

This is one of my regular lunch places downtown. When I come in the morning for breakfast, they are busy preparing the salads and meat for lunch that day. They fry their own chips and make their own salsa. The rice is yellow and the beans are black as they should be. Enjoy!

  • Katia M.

I like this place, but it's a little more sketchy looking than the counter at the transportation building. Then again, I went in just after the Celtics parade so everything was a little weird that day. I don't know. I like their burritos fine, I suppose. I want more veggies in it, though, you know? And hotter hot sauce. Still a decent lunch pick, though.

Best burrito in Boston. Anna's is good, but not quite as good. The pollo asado here is better than most in Boston and the rice is good, not great. Chips could use some work, and their hotsauce doesn't have much of a kick. Granted I'm comparing it to my beloved Californian taqueria, I stand by the fact that it's the best burrito I've had in Boston. I would be so-so back home, but here, it's top-o-the-line. If you want to see some crazies too, sit by the window and watch outside. It's fun. Note: the cart in the transportation building isn't quite as good, their beans are not quite as soft, they may not soak them overnight.

I wouldn't say it is the cheapest in town, but the friendly staff and authenticity (in terms of SoCal burrito joints) make for a satisfying stay. You can find American-Mexican "fusion" food like the Cod Burrito (unique to this place) and $1 guac (some places charge up to $2.50!). Other helpful tips: Herrera's is the first Mexican place in Downtown that actually has a Carne Asada burrito on their menu and the first to have a breakfast menu with iced coffee on it. I find that my love for iced coffee keeps me out of the burrito places for breakfast - this changes everything!

The best burrito I have ever had in Boston. I had the vegetarian burrito. I treat myself to it once a week. Really fresh and flavorful. Fast, efficient service and really clean establishment.

My fish tacos were a disappointment, but my chicken taquitos dipped in enchilada sauce were yummy in the tummy. The fish was dry, salty, and had a funny taste to it. It came with lettuce and some pico de gallo. I would have liked some cheese and some type of sauce. The whole thing lacked flavor. Also, the soft tortilla shells seemed stale. My co-worker enjoyed her burrito though. The place seems popular, so I will give it a second chance and go for a burrito next time. I'm giving it two stars for now based on the bad fish tacos, I'll do an upgrade (if deserved) after I try a burrito.

For me, eating a burrito from Herrera's is akin to reliving the first time I held Angie William's hand during a third-grade trip to Holiday Skate World: first, my breathing becomes short and rapid. Then, as I approach the front door on Temple, I feel an idiotic grin appear on my face. It spreads to an equally-if-not-more stupid smile as I walk in and find a place in line, until finally I'm reduced to a blubbering imbecile when it's time for me to give my order to one of the very kind and very patient women behind the counter. I'll try not to sound like a Wendy's commercial from 1992, but what makes Herrera's great is the ingredients. I don't know what time they actually start cooking things like the steak, chicken, or pork, but when a customer witnesses either of those three ingredients are taken out of the warming pan and liberally applied to a slathering of yellow rice and your choice of cilantro infused black beans or onion-tinged red beans, one could swear they were pulled right off the grill. The same applies to the veggie burrito. I tried one just after finding out (ie stumbling upon) about Herrera's and lemme tell you, although the pepper'/mushroom/zucchini medley was grilled, there was still a nice amount of crunch to it. I like that since limp, cooked vegetables are generally greasy and makes me want to hurt an elephant. Why an elephant? Because 'Dumbo' made me cry when I was four years old and I have never forgiven Walt Disney Studios nor those peripatetic pachyderms since. Why I can't give Herrera's the magical fifth star might strike some as being petty, but I'll be honest, it hurts me not to do so. Hurts deep. Inside. My first complaint is the quality of the horchata. Man, I've tried the stuff three times (the third time because I was convinced that because the joint was so incredibly busy, that might've affected the quality of the stuff the first two times I tried it. Why? I have no idea, but I do have a tendency to fooling myself into making excuses for places that have one bad item which doesn't jive with the rest of their wonderfullness. Much like driving a Corvette that leaks oil; it's still a Corvette, right? So stop bitching already) Anyway, to put it simply: the horchata is weak and chalky. REALLY chalky. God that hurts to say. The second complaining is that Herrera's closes at, like, 4 PM. I mean, freakin'-A. That's the PERFECT stop if you're on your way to catch a flick at the Boston Common Loewe's and just want a tide-me-over before sitting for two hours in order to watch the pinnacle of acting talent that is Renee Zellwegger pucker her way through yet another comedic tear-jerker whose plot derives from the plucky feel-good story of a nobody who's man has done-her-wrong and yet, by the grace of God and a six pack of Schlitz, she pulls herself out of her funk and dates somebody else who the viewer knows will end up treating her like the first guy did because everything about Renee Zellwegger projects 'doormat'. A great burrito from Herrera's would help you through that pain.

A list of times I have been inspired by Herrera's Breakfast Burrito: 1. On my way to work, now 275 miles south of the freakin' place. (booooooooo) 2. When hungover and hungry. 3. ...or otherwise completely miserable and hungry. 3. Late at night when cooking for myself and friends. My bastardized version has replaced my late night egg sandwiches. Woah. 4. When thinking about the summer of '04. 5. When poor. 6. When presented with a cheap substitution at a sub-par second rate cousin. 7. When within 10 blocks of Temple Pl. before 11am. Ask them to put the breakfast potatoes IN it. Key. The other food rates a 4 in their category. I will happily attest to their hot chocolate, nachos, veggie burrito, and fish taco being delicious. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Herrera's is Lunchtime satisfaction Carne Asada Taco salad I have money in my wallet F you McDonalds Though not the best burrito joint in town Herrera's knows how to do a ting well and keep doing it the same way. I have never had huge variations in my meals here. The Carne Asada is well grilled the service is fast and polite. The lettuce is a bit over chilled and the beans are tasty but a bit short of flavorful. Most of their menu options are good. If you want to try something a bit off from your standard just go for it. The straight-solid taqueria. No surprises. What's good-service and consistency. The slap-not original, basic flavor palate

Thumbs up yummy cheap Mexican food without having to do the food court thing! You can't go wrong with a quick lunch here and a walk around the common! Maybe I shouldn't share but the only thing I didn't like was the bathroom (which I am thankful they offer but...) that was down the back stairs and down a very dimly lit hallway in the basement with dark slightly open doors you need to walk by.. a little creepy, so go before you run off to lunch!

An unexpectedly fantastic place to get a lunch time salad! The burritos are pretty popular with my colleagues although I have not had one. I was too busy tucking in to my fresh, satisyfing, meaty salad with it's equisite guacamole and spicy salsa. Speaking of, Iit's high time I go back!

Herrera's is a very solid choice for Mexican breakfast and lunch in the Downtown area. There ar lots of options and choices are infinitely customizable. When the weather is nice they also have a cart around Downtown crossing with less options but they serve the staples like beef and chicken burritos, etc. One thing they offer in their storefront that is great is their fish tacos which I find super tasty especially in a crunchy taco shell. Substitute rice with lettuce and salsa for a delicious and nutritios treat!

Hooray for Herrera! Finally a decent burrito joint downtown. The carnitas burrito was great and I can't wait to return so I can get my hands on the spicy chicken... The chips and salsa I ordered on the side were not great, however. Just stick to the burritos.

  • Tim B.

Herrera's is the best burrito you can get downtown. The rice could be better but everything else gets an A+ Carnitas and horchata makes my day every time! The torta is a lowlight here. It comes on a sub roll that is pressed on the grill. The ingredients are very basic with the only twist being "Herrera's Chipotle Sauce" which is just Chipotle Mayo that tastes like Big Mac Special Sauce.

I freaking love these burritos. They are the perfect in-between class bite to eat when I need some getting my masters degree brain food! Plus, they wrap up nicely so you can have the other half for lunch the next day...or for a snack later on. Give me a medium chicken, rice, cheese & black bean burrito from Herrera's and I am a happy, happy gal.

All right, after leeching off of other yelpers, I will finally write a review. Maybe even two. I don't know, I don't know if I'll have enough time. So I got the Fish Taco platter based on other people recommendations and the fact that I'm a huge fish taco fan (yes, I know that's a double entendre.) I got one hard and one soft (again, I know that's another entendre, get your mind out of the gutter.) The platter was $7 total, not bad but not a steal either. The hard taco shells didn't seem to be homemade as I saw all the shells and they were uniform in size and shape, but who knows? If anyone can confirm or deny props to them. The hard taco was pretty good, The Fish was good as well, lightly battered, no heavy fish and chip type batter which is terrible on Fish tacos. The fish was very moist on the inside (last double entendre for you and me.) Not huge serving of fish, but nothing to complain about. They topped it with lettuce and salsa. Now here's where I have a little problem, every fish taco connoisseur knows you gots to have the red cabbage for fish tacos. But at least it came with a very tasty chipotle sauce (seemed like a mayo based sauce). Then came the soft taco and here's where they dropped the ball a little bit. I like soft tacos more, and it seemed like it was going to be very good. They put 2 soft taco tortillas on the flat grill and and doubled them up for one taco. But when I ate them, they were very chewy and seemed not so cooked. Trust me when I say I know my soft tacos, if I liked the hard taco more than the soft, that's not a good thing. Maybe this is a one time thing, but based on what I ate today that dropped them down a peg. If I could I would give them a 3.5 based on today, but with the soft tacos and the no cabbage, I'll round down to 3. Also I will say I am going to be a little of a tougher grader, a three for me is a place I would go to again, but wouldn't go out of my way to go to. Also, not included in this review, I got a Chicken Mole burrito from their stand once. It was good, but the mole sauce wasn't too flavorful and they could have steamed the tortilla more. I would have given it a 3.5 as well but rounded it up to a 4

Naples. That means nope. Is there no such thing as authentic mexican food in Boston? I'm still searching. I mean, don't get me wrong, pickled jalapeos definitely have their place, but that place is more like...AM/PM or 7-11 nachos. No refried beans. No pinto beans. No guacamole - not today anyway. The chips were tri-color, the taco shells were pre-fried like store bought Ortega, which is something I have never seen in Mexico, mainland or Baja. My enchiladas were overpriced (you can't order a la carte) and they spooned the sauce on just before serving. It was virtually tasteless, and they were served on a styrofoam plate that I practically cut through. I'm sad. Someone save me. Is there a Mexican restaurant in Boston that isn't cafeteria style??????? Nothing made me gag, but what kind of standard is that? Won't pay for it again. I can make things that don't make me gag at home. This place is popular because people who eat there have never had a carnitas burrito from Lolitas in Chula Vista. Sorry, I'm a Mexican food snob.

The Herrera's burrito cart on Summer St. makes me extremely happy. Few options at the cart, but who needs a lot of options? It just makes you fickle. I haven't even gone to the actual restaurant on Temple yet. I suppose I should sometime. Their burritos are super-tasty, without fail, every time. Edit 2008/01/18: I finally went to the proper shop over on Temple Place. The fish tacos were utterly fantastic. Large chunks of fish, a nice spicy sauce, really fresh and surprisingly light.

Pretty good burritos all around. The spices on the meats aren't as good as some of the other places around town, and I'm let down by the lack of an al pastor option. They've got good rice, and the price is right for this part of town. Just enough seating that I usually end up finding a spot even if it's busy.

  • R.G. W.

This place is (so far) at the top of my Boston's Best Breakfast Burrito list. The eggs are steaming hot (and they make them to order), and the size of the burrito will fill you up for breakfast. I wasn't a huge fan of the refried beans, and the ranchero sauce overwhelmed the other flavors a bit, but in general I liked it. I've eaten the other stuff there too: the taquitos, the torta, drank horchata. Personally I like El Pelon's torta better because tortas deserve better bread than the subs used at Herrera's, and I think El Pelon's hot sauce is spicier. But Herrera's is definitely the best Mexican I've found yet in downtown. The restaurant is clean; the workers are friendly; they play great Mexican music; and it has nice seating. Hurrah for Herrera's!

This place is no nonsense. Quick ordering and plain food. Nothing really that great but the staff is really nice. I liked my Mexican sandwich on the daily specials board but no one else of our group of 10 liked their food really. If you need a quick bite on the run that is what this place is about but don't expect much.

  • Tracy H.

Ugh. I realize I'm in the minority, but I'm not a fan of this place. Maybe the burritos are a better draw, but the salsa tasted like a mix of ketchup and cocktail sauce. The nacho chips were salt-less and seemed stale. The chicken quesadilla was greasy and had some unidentifiable 'meat' parts in it. The lemon iced tea was tasty, but I won't waste my mula here again.

    (2)
  • Jeff B.

Good for a quick lunch, burrito's are customizable but if you get too creative the ladies can get a bit salty. The beans are potent - not for those who aren't into a little crop dusting action. The burrito pescado looks tempting but don't be fooled, this place is just one step up from dirty-water hot dogs.

ME GUSTA As a transplanted Californian, I am always searching for that authentic taqueria. My judgment usually depends on how good the fish tacos or the carne asada burrito with guacamole taste. Tucked away on one of the Downtown Crossing/Boston Commons connector streets, I accidentally ran across this little lunch crowd oriented taqueria. Herrera's definitely did have an authentic Mexican feel and they had a very nice selection of food with some authentic dishes. The fish tacos consisted of a substantial amount of deep fried fish but they were not seasoned as well as I would like. My friend had the carne asada burrito that he thought was good. I was happy to see that they had horchata (sweet rice drink) which definitely takes them up a couple of notches in the authenticity scale. Overall my experience was good although I still give the Boston Taqueria Award edge to El Pelon in Fenway.

yummy stuff. i wasn't thrilled with the carrots in my veggie burrito, but that's a personal preference i guess. the hot sauce was hot without being overwhelming and the guacamole was flavorful with yummy chunks of avocado. update - had to give an extra star on my next trip. the horchata is decent and the black bean soup was amazing, best i've ever had. they are very clear on what's vegetarian and what's not, which is rare and much appreciated.

Great burritos, something different from Anna's / Chipotle / Boca Grande. Very fresh, fast, and cheap. Love the steak burrito, fish burrito is also good (with chipotle sauce).

Not the most authentic or delicious Mexican food I've ever had, but a good option downtown. My special enchiladas verdes plate was quite good, and service was speedy. Nice decor (southwest-y but not too tacky) and not too loud. They have burritos, tacos, and nachos also. This is more of a burrito assembly line place (like Anna's) than an authentic Mexican experience, but, again, no complaints when they have cheap Mexican food downtown. I'll be back.

it is 1pm on a thursday, i'm at work, and haven't eaten yet. i'm incredibly hungry. but i'm taking a moment to say that i'm going to herrera's. because it is amazing. and because it is only a block away. and because sweet caroline (ba, ba, ba) at the counter knows my order by heart: super bean and cheese with hot sauce, extra sour cream, to go. 4 stars... losing one for closing so early. 4pm. LAME! it would be dinner so often if it weren't for that... on the plus side, they now accept credit cards, but make sure you have cash for the tip, as there is no option on the receipt.

This place is excellent for lunch. I go to this place once a month, the food is great especially the Chicken Burrito. Also, the prices are cheap ranging from 3 to 7 bucks. The food has a great blend of veggies and meat, the atmosphere is nice and simple, the workers are cool. Well the only downside is that it gets very busy during lunch time, other than that its perfect. Herrera's is on my top 5 of places to eat for lunch.

i'm kinda addicted to this place -- the cart on summer/winter street is the only one i've been to. i get the same thing everytime, so i can only vouch for the super bean and cheese burrito -- but it is probably one of the two best burritos i have ever eaten. the only reason i give it four stars instead of five is that a few times a stray piece of meat has found its way into my burrito...not cool for a vegetarian. the two guys who work there are very friendly and sweet. and the stamp they use on the frequent buyer card is a unicorn, which makes me smile. i'm not usually a fan of buying lunch from a street cart, but this place is truly an exception.

If you work in the area, then you know that this is the place to go for Mexican food. I personally enjoy getting the taco plate or a burrito. The prices are decent, and you can get lunch for around $5, which is a key price point for me.

I started off going to the stand they have in the Transportation Building and was very excited when this restaurant opened. It is one of the only quick service Mexican places in teh downtown/financial district area and it is a good place to grab a quick bite. The burritos and tacos are pretty good and the taco salad is delicious. Some of the people who work here are better at preparing food than others so it can be hit or miss but if you get someone who knows what they're doing, this is as good as fast Mexican gets in the area.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize.
