Many of the reviews I read through give the Anchor a hard time. Adjust your expectations. While we were waiting to be seated in the dining area (in a Saturday night I wasn't expecting 5 minute seat times) I observed the beauty of the Anchor. There were the were people from all walks of life enjoying the place. Multi-generational families in the dining room- couples young an older at the bar eating- girlfriends having a drink- fisherman enjoying a beer and some seafood. It was neither pretentious or too 'divey'. The bartenders were so busy they never stopped moving. The food was moving out of the kitchen and being served and eaten..what more did you want? Yes, it is cash only but likely keeps the prices reasonable. The do have a heavy pour but I haven't had a drink at that price since 1985. Our meal- with critical out-of-towners- was generously portioned, well seasoned and obviously fresh. I live local so I skipped the obvious seafood and judged the steak tips (marinated). Well worth the $10.95- tender, flavorful and plenty of them. My guests shared a special of short ribs with onion gravy- also well seasoned, flavorful and yummy! To find crab cakes for $5 is unheard of- I live in Marblehead where you can't touch them for less than $11. They may be a little understaffed- needing an updating in the decor department- but really, this place is a gem! I felt like I could become a regular - it had the feeling of what the TV show Cheers portrayed. Can't wait to go again to try the fired clams.

Where to start? Well first off, if you are not from MA and want to drink, not sure you can as there is a sign saying "MA ID'S Only". Wonder what these guys did to earn that privilege? Moving on, it doesn't get much better. No one ever gave us menus, so we ordered off a whiteboard that looked like it was created by a 10 year old. The pressure was on because every few minutes they'd erase one of the entrees as if they were running out of food. We finally flagged the waitstaff. We ordered crab cakes (ok), broiled haddock (garbage), fried clams (adequate), fried flounder (nothing special) and a lobster (good). Sides where unimpressive, especially the french fries. I'd put up with the poor service and crummy decor for a good experience. But it wasn't a good experience at all. There is a 7-11 around the corner, I'll just get some nachos the next time I'm hungry in that neighborhood.

The food is good, but service is slow. The young bus boy was dreadful! Rude ... well, see full details below: Pros: - delicious crab cakes, baked scallops, and baked haddock - strong drinks, not consistently made, but strong - where the locals eat (they call each other by name) - GREAT prices Cons: - severely understaffed - long wait - bus boy who served HORRENDOUS - just trying to get on your last nerve - decor is a bit run down and tacky, but that's me being picky - women's bathroom was filthy

Great local casual spot by the Salem/Beverly bridge. Cash only, with an ATM inside. Food is just good New England homestyle seafood, nothing fancy, VERY affordable. Twin lobsters less than $15! You can get scallops, lobster, shrimp, haddock, etc baked, fried, broiled, throw some butter and lemon on and you're good to go! Drinks are also made strong. One of my favorite low-key inexpensive spots when I'm in the area.

Still my go to for Tips and fried clams! The anchor is not for everyone, and not for every occasion, so before you decide to venture over there are a few things to keep in mind: You will wait for your food, period. It is NOTHING fancy (both food & service) It is cash Only. Their bests: Steak tips, lobsters, pizza, Best specials (when available): seafood pie, fried oysters, fried clams, meatloaf If this is what you are looking for, take a trip on over. If not, try something else.

Went back and ended up getting really sick from the food.

Cheap food, but you get what you pay for. Oh, and you get to wait nearly an hour from the time you order it til it arrives. The fare is simple and straightforward too as you would expect at a place like this, and isn't that good, so there is no excuse for how long takes to arrive. Save your time and go elsewhere

    (1)
  • Dan R.

Ok, the food is great and cheap, but unless you have an entire evening to kill here, skip it. As the following time quotes go for food and service, I work in the industry so I'm very careful not to exaggerate. I popped in by myself and sat at the bar. 5 full minutes to order a drink. Another 10+ to order food. My stuffed clam was good for $2.25. Basically stove top stuffing mixed with clam. It was good, but took about 20 minutes to arrive. My lobster roll and French fries (hardly any cooking required) was a solid 40 minutes from order time. It's a great size for $16.50, but I should have just followed my first thought and got a steak bomb at engine house pizza Really bummed out because otherwise this is a great place

Took a chance at this total dump again. 10 years ago someone in my party had food poisoning from clam chowder and I swore I wouldn't go back. Tried again... Bad idea trying again. Service was horrible. After waiting 15 minutes for the female bartender to make eye contact, we received a round of beers. No smile, no thank you for tip. Miserable bartender who wasn't happy new females decided to come in. This is a bar that should be grateful anyone comes to. Will never go back and will tell anyone who will listen never to try it.

While you may not receive an upscale dining experience at the Anchor, you'll certainly receive decently priced food and drinks and a low key atmosphere. Though we normally go to the Anchor for drinks with friends, I had the opportunity last weekend to actually eat in at the restaurant side. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The lobster was good, the chowder was fresh, and the entire meal (a meal that included multiple lobsters, crab, scallops, shrimp, and ciders) was well under what I expected when the bill came. I think I even asked the server if she remembered to charge us for everything. If you're looking for a fun local dive with decent food and a fisherman-esque atmosphere, definitely check out the Anchor.

Used to love this place for its fresh seafood at good prices. Today's the fried haddock was overcooked, not very hot and bland. The garlic roasted potatoes were soggy and device was painfully slow. Ok place for a beer but won't be back for a while.

  • Bailey B.

It was decent food and the service wasn't bad around lunch time. However, Ive been to other Bars/Pubs whose menus are not extensive but definitely have gourmet flair. I had a sandwich there and i cant really remember what it was, but it was not memorable if that sheds any light.

Where else can you get a lobster under $10, tons of food and cheap strong drinks? Fresh food and a laid back atmosphere. Food: the chowder is amazing, the lobster pie was loaded with lobster, really good onion soup and the haddock was almost bigger than the plate. We love it here. It's not fancy, but I like that. It's comfortable and I like the staff. Good fresh food at ridiculously cheap prices. Go here! And get a cape coder!

  • Victoria E.

Food was terrible. Pasta was overcooked and had no flavors. Some salt in the pasta cooking water is not to much to ask for I would think. Why not make a creamy garlicy sauce and serve the pasta in?? The beer was flat and the scallops were mushy. The waitress asked to take our bill before we were done. I will not come back to that terrible waste of a restaurant. Is sad for such a great location....Dinning room lacked charm. No romance to that place

  • nick c.

Good fresh cheap seafood (some of it). Occasionally a fish will go up on the specials menu that is not fresh. Probably worth asking if you're not sure. Service is slow and all the vegetables are canned or frozen. They have cheap hefty sandwiches on the specials menu as well. The Wing Zings, stuffed clams and Nachos are good. The lobster roll is my favorite. The place definitely has it's charms.

Went in on a Sunday night with a party of six adults. Best thing I can say is the beer prices are really cheap. We sat in the back room - big mistake. Table not ready for 30 minutes and the hostess "thought we left" even though we were in the bar five feet away. We ordered apps and then ten minutes later the waitress told us it would be one hour - for chowder, and shrimp cocktail. WTF? And it was more like an hour and ten minutes as the kitchen was backed up. Chowder was tasty but a bit thin. The dinners came about 90 minutes affer we ordered and they were just OK. Fish and chips and Haddock were good, lobster roll okay. The baked shrimp tasted like dog food and another dish was served wrong. The waitress blamed the cooks, but barely came to check on us during the long wait, did not offer a free drink or anything beyond rolls even though we were pretty patient and ordered salads during the hour wait. HEre is the deal - the cooks take care of the bar tenders and folks at the bar get their food first. The back dining room is a joke - everyone waited hours for their food. Don't sit back there and go with fish and chips or lobster roll - AT THE BAR. Don't go on a busy Sunday night. By then the staff is burned out and surly. They do not give a @#it if you wait or are hungry or if you come back.

Very cheap place for lobsters. We ordered twin lobsters, baked clam, clam chowder, steak tip salad, beet. Everything tastes good,

  • Courtenay M.

Delicious food and strong drinks for cheap! Plus the pool tables, keno and juke box make for a fun night out. The bartenders are usually very friendly and definitely accommodating. The food is amazing and for the amount you get, the prices are unbeatable. This is one of my favorite places to go when I want to just chill out and have a relaxing evening with some good food. My favorite sandwich is the cheeseburger club; always cooked to perfection and I substitute sweet potato fries... Makes for a tasty lunch.

Great food and price. It could get crowded sometimes in the bar. Expect to wait if you aren't sitting in the restaurant side.

  • Adelle D.

Great food and large portions, SUPER CHEAP. Strong yummy drinks, SUPER CHEAP. Crappy service. Well, what do you expect? You get what you pay for! They have a pool tables and keno, too. Definitely go here if you're hungry, you don't mind the dive bar scene and waiting 15 mins to order a drink : )

  • Christian D.

Don't take out of state IDs. Even if you just want food. Did not advertise the fact that they didn't. My brother and I found this out after waiting 15 minutes for service at 3:30 in the afternoon. I've worked in the industry and the only time that it matters with checking IDs is when the police come in... So stupid.

  • Minnie W.

I came here with a party of four on a Friday night. We arrived around 6:45 and they were already out of lobsters. We order shrimp cocktail & popcorn shrimp for our appetizers. They were alright. The reason why this place deserve a 1 star is their service. It took 35 minutes for our entrees to come. Won't come again!

    (1)
  • Tim H.

Pretty much the worst service I've ever seen in my entire life. Refused entrance to 8 out of state people who were probably going to give them $500 profit. If you are not from Mass don't bother. I can not imagine any bar in Florida doing that. ZERO stars.

  • S A.

Cheap food, cheap drinks that are crazy strong. Food is solid, can't beat seafood prices anywhere!! Always bring out if town friends here for lobster in the summer. Friendly crowd, good pool tables. Cash only.

    (4)
  • Nick B.

Great place. Cheap drinks and cheap food. The steak tip dinner is probably the best bargain for food in Beverly, and the tips are great. That said, this place is very divey. If you don't like dive bars don't even bother. Pretty sure it's the only place in Beverly that has pool tables also.

    (4)
  • Ashley H.

This place is really good! I had a lobster for $10.50, and my boyfriend had a huge burger, and that was amazing too. The staff was friendly, and it wasn't a bad atmosphere, and the drinks were good. The only thing we did not like about our experience was that the sour cream may have been a little past date, it was room temp as well.

    (4)
  • Debra M.

Anchor probably has the biggest lobster roll around and for the price it's pretty worth it. They only accept cash which is a little tough because I only like to use my credit cards. The server seemed okay, not great but not bad. A lot gentlemen or fishermen hanging around at the bar drinking beer in broad daylight. I guess that's just what they like to do. But try the lobster roll. And get it with sweet potato fries. Don't forget to being some cash with you.

    (3)
  • Matthew M.

Had lunch with my father and brother. Got the shrimp cocktail, was awesome and more than affordable. My brother got the lamb stew and said it was ok. Our Dad got the steak tips and was satisfied. Oh yea, the onion soup...forget about it! Thanks for the cheap eats, Mazzulo Family!

How much you will enjoy this place really depends on the type of person you are. This is a proper pub through and through, with really friendly but rough service, a homey frazzled vibe, and lots of men who own pickup trucks. It's old and worn around the edges, and also makes you question the hygiene, but there isn't anything incriminating. In fact, if this is what you are expecting, it's very honest and fun. And the food is dirt cheap with gigantic portions. If you are going for quantity over quality, then it's totally worth it. The lobster roll was super stuffed (although there was a lot of shredded lobster meat) and more than passable. Everything else was kind of meh, including crab cakes, fried clams, and stuffed flounder. The fried onions and french fries were really meh as well. There was little in the way of seasoning or flavor development. In other words, this is a honest to goodness pub. Don't come expecting a gastropub, as there are no pretentions here of trying to make food that's any more interesting than as it is described in the menu.

  • M A.

Great place for inexpensive food that is way beyond what you pay for, but the service has gone downhill significantly in the past few months. Seems to be a new staff at the place - new owners? Wait time at the bar just to get a beer is approaching 10 minutes on an average day. Clearly they need one more person behind the bar, maybe two. Love the place but having a difficult time returning as often as I use too.

  • Brian S.

Great food, Awesome prices. Friendly place. Strong drinks. Highly recommend. Being from out of town I was lucky to find this hidden gem. 2 1 1/4 lobsters for 22.00... Yeah baby,,,,,, Go if your close, even if your not. Its worth it. Remember Cash only. They do have an ATM onsite.

  • Ricky B.

Had heard this place had good seafood so I decided to go, ordered the fish and chips and it was clearly frozen dry crappy, what I would expect to get at Long John silvers. Can't believe all the good reviews I guess I'd have to be drunk to enjoy anything about this place.

    (1)
  • Melody N.

Some food items are hit or miss. Things I have liked: twin lobsters(great price for them), lobster roll, fried seafood. Service can be a little slow but they're nice and friendly. Atmosphere is dive bar like - but cheap good seafood and cheap drinks make it a worth a visit.

Reasonable prices (just bring cash), a good beer selection and a killer lobster roll. Worth the drive up from Boston!

  • Liz L.

I didn't think it was possible to screw up mashed potato, peas and fried fish, but the Anchor exceeded in an epic fail. It was so bad I thought I was being punked. The mashed tasted like it came out of box and everything else was beyond bland. There wasn't even a hint of salt! I'm all for dine bars, but this was a major disappointment. I've lived in Beverly for years and really wanted to like this place. Based on my experience the only thing I can recommend at this point is going there for a beer and people watching. Sorry Anchor!

  • Steward P.

Went there for breakfast and I gotta say I loved it. My wife got a full breakfast of eggs homefries and toast for under $3! Mine was more expensive cause it was eggs with Delicious steak tips! I spent a lot of the meal looking at amazement at the board listing the specials they were running. So many seafood dishes that have prices that seemed ridiculously low! The people who recommended this place to me swear the seafood is really good here- I now need to go back and try it out for myself. One thing I wish though is that there was a second entrance directly to the seating area, for my first fifteen feet after entering I was regretting being there as I had to walk past a massive dim-lit bar full of alckeys getting their drink on to prepare for the upcoming afternoon. Just makes me feel gross having to go thru that. Cash only, they have an ATM. Parking situation seems good.

Great place to get a cheap strong drink! The food here is awesome! I tend to come for brunch on Sunday mornings. Great people and staff. T is the best! Cash only but there is an ATM available!

  • Tara M.

The food was completely nasty. Mashed potatoes from a box, nasty meat and fish. Haddock tasted like chicken. Veggies from a can. Prices are cheap, but come on!! Like a high school cafeteria.

Good breakfast here came in one morning and was surprised at how good it was..Pool table gets a plus and if you want to go to a place not full of regulars do not come here!

LOBSTER ROLL!!! So huge, so delicious! My dad and I visited Anchor Pub and Grille after a brief visit to Salem. I was on the hunt for a lobster roll and he was on the hunt for a burger. We were happily satisfied with both at this spot. Ok - it's definitely no frills - a dive I'd call it. The bar was full of apparent regulars. We sat in the dining area off the bar (alone). It was quite cute in a beach-y sort of way. Service was slow (she admitted that she forgot about us - which was pleasantly honest)...but our server was the only one working and she was quite nice. I have to go with a 3 due to the strange atmosphere (I normally love a good dive, but this didn't really mesh well with the dining room and the dive bar). The bar area was a bit dingy, but the bathrooms were spotless, which is a plus. Food was great! Food was also super cheap! A definite visit if you're in the area.

  • Less H.

Best lobster roll I've had in Massachusetts. For a dive bar they make a Maine-style lobster roll. Toasted split hot dog roll, lined with iceberg lettuce and filled to overflowing with a ton of fresh lobster meat mixed with just enough mayo to hold together. The lobster roll was so big my partner and I split it. the fries were crisp and good as well.

  • Lawrence C.

it's a regular and very typical bar. no fancy decoration. food is very good though. one thing no good is the GPS will bring u to the wrong place. when GPS said u arrived, walk or drive a bit closer to the bridge then u will find the bar

    (4)
  • Ella B.

Service took forever, we were there for two hours for lunch!! apps were good: Stuffed clam - delish. Clam chowder - lukewarm, thick and chunky, not a chowder, more of a paste.. but good flavor. Disappointed with the baked sea scallops -- no flavor and bland. Lobster roll - pretty good. It was a Pats game so maybe they were just slammed, but it's sort of divey, and CASH ONLY. probably a good place to watch the game etc, but not exactly great food.

    (2)
  • Natalie T.

This place is disgusting. The haddock and sole were clearly old, tough, and inedible, who knows how long they were sitting in the back of the freezer. The stuffed clams at the "bargain $1.50 price" were frozen and store-bought. The mashed potatoes came from a box, the green beans and corn came from cans... We were over charged because the server kept track of the tab via pen and paper and couldn't read her own hand writing afterwards. (What do they even have cash registers for?) Honestly, if you want to drop $50 on frozen processed food then this is your place What a waste. I hear they have lobster and strong drinks for cheap, yoi may need that drink after eating here.

  • Molly W.

Um. The Anchor is like a train wreck that you can't pull yourself away from. My friend fully admitted it was "divey" but that they made up for it with their good, affordable seafood & their big, strong drinks. I can't argue with that... We rolled up on Sunday afternoon and the parking lot was PACKED. Walking through the shattered door with duct tape on it, we were thrown into another dimension. There were people everywhere! Playing pool, drinking beer, chowing food. Every single seat was taken. What the heck is this place? They must be doing something right! I still don't entirely understand the appeal, except that you can be REALLY LOUD, and get sloppy on the cheap-cheap. Hey wait - maybe I do understand the appeal after all. At the very least this place is super entertaining. The cops came to arrest some guy that stole someone's car, and ended up arresting the pizza guy for outstanding warrants. It was like a reality show full of twists and turns! And while I'd love to comment on the food, my husband and I are on a diet, so I really shouldn't. Except that you should not go here for a salad. Oh no, please spare yourself. But DO try the lobster roll. It is ALL meat, and at $14, how could you say no? Plus, they serve their (strong) Cape Codders in 16oz beer glasses. F-yeah! I can feel the townie-ness rubbing off on me already!! (see my friend Larry sitting atop a lobster roll in the Pictures section)

  • Clarinda G.

Great prices for lobster and pretty decent selection of seafood on the edge of town. Must have the chowder and boiled lobster - nothing fancy or pretentious, just good ol' comfort food.

    (5)
  • Matt P.

Steak tips. Have had them a few times in the last couple months, and don't know how I missed them for so long. They're great....for whatever they cost, $8 or so? Nicely marinated, not gourmet, or overdone, but just good old tasty pub food. Rice, fries, or roasted potatoes...don't stray too far aside on the sides though. Clam roll is still a winner. Same with the lobster roll. Hit it. Breakfast is still good...you know like when you leave your car nearby after a long night of rumdrinks (safety first), why not have breakfast? Onestop shopping!

    (4)
  • Eddie T.

Nothing quite like the Anchor; trying to find something comparable in the D.C. area but am still looking :) Food is great, you have to try the Lobster Roll!! Parking is probably the one thing that is a pain, but it attests to how popular the place can be.

    (5)
  • Christina P.

I just love how the food is so affordable here. They also pour a fantastic drink. They always have great daily specials. CASH ONLY, people. If you're here expecting gourmet dishes and fancy service, go somewhere else.

    (5)
  • Liz W.

God I love this place. Cheap drinks that are insanely strong and cheap food that is insanely good. I always order off the specials and have never been disappointed. 2 lobsters for $12? Awesome.

    (5)
  • Mike W.

Five stars despite their refusing to serve us alcohol. They only accept Massachusetts ID or a Passport to serve you alcohol because of some new fake ID group that is making scannable out-of-state IDs. Hopefully this will be resolved soon, but for the time being the whole town of Beverly decided that out-of-state IDs cannot be accepted anywhere in the town. The guys at the Anchor were really nice about it, and the food made up for not having a beer with dinner. The lobster roll was awesome: a giant mound of fresh, sweet lobster on a bun that I couldn't even see at first, and it was only $15. Great clam chowder as well.

  • Aaron C.

Food was ok, but portions were huge and it was so cheap! Our server was barely adequate, bus girl was solid though. cool dive bar atmosphere!

It's hard for me to write a completely accurate review since we didn't actually eat any food here. That's because we left before even being seated. We went at 8pm on a Friday night and expected it to be busy, but we weren't even acknowledged until we hunted a bartender down to ask what the seating procedure was. Since the place is so small, we had to stand against the wall behind customers at the bar and wait. Again, no one acknowledged us at all, until a woman roughly informed us that it would "be a while" and then told us to get out of the doorway - so we got out of the doorway and right back into the car. From what we could tell, the menu was pretty lacking (only about nine options), though the prices did seem very good. Make sure you bring cash, or use the ATM they have there, since it's cash only. Also, don't expect to drink if you look young and you're from out of state - only Massachusetts IDs are accepted.

  • Elmer C.

I began to say the Anchor Bar has the best seafood around, but that's not really accurate. They have the best seafood anywhere! To start with, the owners are actual lobster fisherman, so naturally it's going to be exceedingly fresh and exceptionally priced. Their Lobster Rolls are the standard from which all others must be judged. With the Beverly docks right across the street, other fishermen sell the best of their catch to the Anchor. When an item sells out, it's crossed off the menu board. If it's not fresh, it's not at the Anchor. In many other parts of the country, it's impossible to get REAL fried clams. (I wonder how many people think clams are those pre-chewed frozen plastic clam strips?) The Anchor has their own local "Clam Guy" who brings them the sweetest and freshest possible. Far superior to the better known "tourist trap" clam shacks, the Anchor is also less expensive. Yes, the service may take a while, especially on a Friday evening, but it's always worth the wait. Meanwhile, you can have an inexpensive drink and enjoy the very friendly atmosphere. Sitting at the bar to eat is fun and entertaining, but there are a couple of small dining rooms and a large area with pool tables where you can eat too. Located right on the Beverly side of the MA-107 and MA-1A bridge to Salem, the Anchor is easy to find. For me, it's worth the drive up from Boston. I always leave happy and well-fed! P.S.: Don't miss the French Onion Soup! At $3.50 for a big bowl, loaded with melted cheese, it's another delicious bargain!

  • Joe V.

We had a lobster roll which came with soooo much lobster it was almost too much. Fries that came with it were only okay but lobster roll itself was worth it and was under $15. CASH ONLY. Come early. There is usually a wait.

    (5)
  • Debbie C.

Not bar for a dive bar. I tried the lobster roll which was full of lobster. Fries that came with it were only okay, next time I'll get the seasoned pub fries. Lobster roll itself was worth it and was under $15. My husband had the buffalo fingers, spicey but that's how he likes them. Both of us ate and had a few drinks with a tab of $30. You can't beat that.

$9 for a TALL -we're talking about a pint glass tall- gin&tonic (with tanqueray) plus a pint of Guinness at the bar. That started off our great night at Anchor Pub & Grille. It was a Saturday night so there was a crowd as well as a waiting list for eating in the dining room, but the wait was offset by the great atmosphere (more warm and comfortable than divey) and the strong drinks at awesome prices! When we sat down at the table about half an hour later, we went overboard with the ordering and stuffed ourselves silly - 2 boiled lobsters with a side of cole slaw (2 for $12.99 that day), jalapeno poppers ($4.99 iirc), 2 stuffed clams @ $1.50 each, and a chilli burger with awesome tasting chilli and fries (~$6). It was a feast and incredibly, all the food was fresh and delicious. I used to think that $12.99 for one lobster at Roy Moore's fish shack up in Rockport was a great deal (and it is), but Anchor blew that one out of the water! If you're looking for great, fresh tasting seafood and comfort foods PLUS ridiculously cheap drinks, this is the place to go. The quality & freshness of the food is attested by their list of daily specials, which gets progressively smaller as the night went on (yes, we spent a few hours there, it was that good). The drinks speak for themselves, as there are plenty of locals at the bar (which has keno!). PS - parking may be tough to get, so good luck! :)

    (5)
  • Morris N.

Seems like a place with a lot of locals. Had little twin lobsters for $13.95 that included two sides. That was a great price! Drinks were also cheap, another bonus. Casual, dive bar feel. Couple of pool tables and electronic keno to keep you entertained as well.

    (4)
  • Adamson T.

The anchor is a small joint with a long bar. The food is always on point and inexpensive. The drinks are strong and wont pin down your wallet by far. The specials change daily and are pretty well priced and prepared. TVs, pool tables , dart boards, local conversation and Keno are enough to keep you entertained while dining. Being right on the water the seafood is very fresh. Overall cheap drinks, great inexpensive food and mixed crowd. Worth the visit

Oh. my. shnaps. I have never had so much marvelous lobster at so cheap my entire life. Lobster Pie - full chunks of lobsters breaded with ritz crackers...tell me, how can that be wrong. Boiled lobsters - $12 for 2 of them. Wow...wow... My new spot im hitting whenever im north of Boston.

Started yelping around to find some good seafood on our vacation. Found the Anchor and saw that it had great reviews so had to try it... The reviews were dead on. This place is casual, cheap and the food is excellent! Twin lobsters for 13.95!!! Sit at the bar, it is very entertaining for sure. Everyone is so friendly. Played a few games of keno but no luck:( Cheap drinks!

The Anchor is definitely a local bar- some people call it a dive bar ... but I am undecided. Overall, the drinks are very affordable and they don't cheap out on you. I was disappointed when I brought a friend from NH as they only accept MA ID. The food is a bit better than average. I've had loads of seafood and never been disappointed but some of their other foods are just OK. Overall I really like it here- it's a place where you can hang out at the bar and get affordable seafood that you can trust. They have pool tables, darts, a decently sized bar and a dining room. I would say that the service can be quite slow but you can tell that the people that work here love it.

We thought this was the place a friend mentioned so when in Beverly we stopped in for lunch. The bar was pretty full . Looked like many regulars. We sat in restaurant side and we both ordered haddock.. My baked haddock was over cooked and some of the cracker crumbs on top had butter mixed in, some just dry cracker crumbs. The color was yellowish. Maybe it was frozen. Didn't look or taste good at all. Husbands fried haddock was smaller thin and tasteless. The cole slaw was basically shredded cabbage. No seasoning or dressing to speak of. The fish chowder was lukewarm and little fish pieces to be found. Thick lumpy cream and again no flavor. Husband described onion rings as direct from a bag. Mostly greasy breading..will never return. The one star is because the bar looked like it could be fun?

Completely reiterate Natalie T's review! This place is absolutely disgusting. Overpriced garbage food and surly SLOW waitstaff. If you can get in early and get a seat at the crowded bar for some cheap beer - go for it. Otherwise you are left to stand around hoping for a table - which feels like it's in someones outdated basement - replete with moldy smell! When you finally do get a seat, and an order taken - don't expect a refill on any drink and the food is BEYOND bad and tiny portions. "Fresh" fish shouldn't be shaped in a perfect square patty. UGH. Whenever we drive by this place we re-live the nightmare inside. There is also no parking as it's on an armpit of the street. Everyone inside is 60+. Don't bother.

Ok, so I was just recently turned on to this place by a coworker of mine. Didn't know what to expect the first time I walked in this place (I had heard it was a bit of a dive bar). I had a great time! This place makes the strongest drinks i've ever had in my life... a Bombay Sapphire and tonic is only $4.75. I bought myself and a friend a drink, and when the bartender told me the price of both, my face lit up with joy! I've been here several times since, and always had a good time. You can get absolutely wasted for around $20, and the staff is nice and friendly.

I like dive bars, but this place smelled so bad of bad fish that I was scared I was going to smell like bad fish when I left. I met a friend there and the staff seemed nice, but it really smelt horrible. My firend said the smell was from the guys that work on the boats, not the place, but I guess that their clientel. So if your looking ot land yourself a smelly fisherman or want ot sit next to one, then this is your place- not mine.

The bar here is full of booze bags, but the food in the dining room is great. Nothing fancy and the value reflects that. We had some excellent stuffed clams, chowder, fried fish and fried clams. What the place lacks in polish it makes up for in great food.

It is your typical bar/pub atmosphere. The food is cheap and good. The service was pretty good. Ma was very personable and a pro at balancing the Apple tini. Family friendly dining room. A couple pool tables in the bar area. I definitely recommend the Anchor.

Good place for people watching..great local dive bar. We had dinner there last night and it was ok. The GF ordered a tuna salad sandwich and it looked good. I had the broiled haddock and it was covered with oyster crackers (or maybe saltines)..wtf? I've had baked fish with ritz crackers/parsley/butter but never oyster crackers. And they didn't even seem to be baked with the fish but rather added after cooking. Weird...stay away from the baked haddock. Good beer selection, the bar tenders were very attentive, and prices were quite reasonable. Cash only but they have an ATM machine.

Food: 5 stars Service: 3 Ambiance: 3.5 - It's a bar/restaurant. Decent place. Overall: 4.5 stars LOBSTER FEAST at a dive bar in the middle of nowhere! 2 lobs for $15.95 in mid-January 2009. Thank you Ellen for bringing us here! And this is my first time giving props to anyone in my reviews.

We were passing through Beverly after an afternoon in Salem when we stumbled upon this restaurant on Yelp. The place has positive yelp reviews and low prices. However, we were disappointed with the food. My baked shrimp and scallops was great, but my mom's lobster roll was awful. The lobster tasted old and smelled fishy. The clam chowder was not very good. Low prices are great, but all the food should at least be fresh.

We were looking for a cheap seafood place, and Yelp pointed me to this dive bar. First, the area around this place is a little on the sketchy side, but it seems more blue collar than ghetto. The service is pretty darn good, though, and the food is amazing. Twin lobsters for Market Price at most places would run $20+, but it was only $12 here (and from what I've heard that's not even considered cheap for them). However, the lobsters were incredibly fresh and delicious. Everything else was great, too. Haddock and chips was fantastic (not too fried, but not soggy and brittle), and the steamed mussels were cheap, fresh, and tasty. Best of all, not only were we full at the end of the night, but so were our wallets :). The only ding I give them is the beers they have on tap. The best they had was Bass and Sierra Nevada, which isn't a bad thing, but I was hoping for some local microbrews. However, the beer is pretty darn cheap compared to other places. If you're tastes aren't as refined (or you're just looking to get hammered for cheap), they do have all the domestic brews (and PBR for any hipsters out there).

Great local dive bar and restaurant. Very casual, to say the least. Very affordable drinks and food! Unless you are hard-core blue collar, you might not want to patronize this joint after dark. There seems to be an established insider community/cult that is headquartered here: unfortunately, most of these "cult" members seem to be alcoholics or very regular drinkers. This establishment is best for weekday breakfast, Sunday brunch, or lunch. Dinner also is served [if you can get a seat or hear yourself think]. Sit at the elongated U-shaped bar or sit in the separate paneled dining area to enjoy your meal/beverages. The breakfast menu is hearty and varied: the quantities are large and the value is as great. Try the Anchor special breakfast of one of its sumptuous omelets. Even the lunch or dinner menu is sufficiently varied and affordable when compared to most dining prices (although The Anchor's loud din and stark--or unimaginative--ambiance are not mood-enhancing nor do they contribute to the digestive process). The service is good; depending upon how many patrons are in the establishment at the time. Most of the time,, the servers' attitude enhance your dining experience. The order turnaround time is tolerable: be advised that 10:00-11:00 am Sunday morning orders usually take the longest. In the interim, one always can watch the assembled bar patrons consuming their first Boiler-makers and Bloody Marys. Go to the Anchor: it is a classic--if not archaic--slice of dining out Americana. Your gullet, wallet, and sensibilities only will be mildly impacted, but your quest for mealtime aural/visual entertainment and your sense of wonderment at how the menu items can be rather decent will be fulfilled.

Went here with a group of grumpy travelers on my way to the Logan airport. It was a bit of a dive, but the food was good and the restrooms were clean. The crab cakes were good. Service was good, sat in dining area around 3 pm and didn't have a problem with being forgotten like a past reviewer. Enjoyed my visit here.

I moved to Beverly recently and have been really missing my favorite dive bar, The Tam. I miss the laid back vibe. I miss the sweet but surly bartenders. I miss the cavalcade of misfits, drunks, losers, and sweet down to earth people that find their way through the door. Most of all, I miss the community of it all. Having a place where people know your name and are actually happy to see you. I wont say that after 5 visits to the Anchor it is already like the Tam - as clearly, NO BAR can ever replace the Tam - but the Anchor is the Beverly version of the Tam plus really good seafood. The Anchor has cheap beer....good food (so far the pizza was solid and the baked haddock was solid)...and great prices. The staff (much like the customers) are a bit rough around the edges and surly at first glance. But over time, as you get to know them (and they get to know you) things change. They become funny, accommodating, and VERY heavy on the pour if you know what I mean. I have been here for 4+ hours on a numbers of occasions (OK I am a booze bag), and have NEVER spent more than 40 dollars...and that includes the nights I ate a full meal. You wont get lucky here (unless your standards have slipped to somewhere south of the Mendoza line), and this isnt the place to impress your new boss or future mother in law. But if a good solid, down to earth, local North Shore spot is what you are looking for - the Anchor is your kind of place. I will be back.

basically.... if you don't like lobster don't go here... there's always a very long wait for the food once ordered.. I've been here twice and both times disappointed with the food.. the sides are not very good at all...corn (from a can)..nasty! garlic potatoes..under cooked and bland...green beans also tasted canned and boiled..very boring and funny tasting however their fries are good but certainly not enough reason to visit again. I got the mixed grill which was chewy steak tips overcooked and fatty pork chop.. I wanted to like this place but its just not good..I wish I liked lobster... but I haven't tried it.. how do you screw up lobster? maybe I am speaking too soon!

A townie bar with appeal. This place has excellent seafood and burgers. The clam chowder was a traditional New England style and aims to please the pallet. Cheep beer + good food = good times!

  • Matthew S.

Where else can you go and get a decent sized burger (cooked to your perfection) with lettuce, tomato, mayo and onion on a bulky roll, pub fries, a cold draft beer and tip for $10. That's right, nowhere.....or.....except "The Anchor". Oh, and they throw in a pickle as well. I heard that the small pan pizzas are good too but I usually stick with the burger. In the past, I've also had the fried calamari for an appetizer which was also quite good if you like that kind of thing??

My friend that lives on the North Shore met me here one night for dinner. What a great choice! One of the best lobster rolls EVER and such a great price! And the drinks were so cheap. My friend had a fish sandwich and he said it just melted in his mouth it was so good... he still raves about that sandwich at least once a week. It's a divey place, but the service, food, and price make up for it. My waitress was great! So worth the trip up from the South Shore! I'm definitely going back.

Loved the atmosphere. Lobsters are caught by the owners wife. You have to get the Lobster Roll. They had Twin Lobsters for $13.95 1 1/4lb. Union Oyster House was $27.95 for one. Cash only.

sorry this place sucks. 2 years ago after being on road since 6 a.m. and getting there at 9 on friday night, bartender never told us kitchen closing early so at 930 went to order and waitress told us closing kitchen early cause cooks were hot/tired wtf is that about. since i knew her and was a good customer think she should have told me before closed. not even a slice of pizza even though they always have slices after kitchen closes at ten.. she gave me bs excuse chef was hot/tired arent we the customer ? find a new cook and if he cant handle heat get the hell out of kitchen. her bs excuses didnt go well w me and she knew when no tip. food just as good at 99 over the bridge. so like a fool i go back at 6 last friday night(2 years later) i am alone and woman at bar conveniently saves onl;y seat available at bar with ice water . friday dinner time and lo and behold the seat is saved for owner 20 minutes later. how arrogant and lack of customer focus is that so after 20 mins of trying to get a seat the bartender trie d to give 2 seats to lovely sleezy couple who knew i was before them. as you can guess i got the seat. food not good quality, yes cheap but who needs their arrogant bs ! not me can you imagine owner taking seat at bar during busiest time, not first time seen her do it good luck i wont be back !

Can't give it a five because it isn't mindblowing, but the Anchor doesn't get enough respect! Great menu for cheap eats, all the apps are good, great to split with friends while grabbing beers. Chowder is great, chili is freakin hot, but tremendous. Twin Lobster special is usually the lowest priced on the North Shore (and it is quality lobster). The daily special board is always loaded with good eats, real homecooked type meals. You can't go wrong with anything on that board! Drinks are dirt cheap, sometimes the bar service can be a little slow because the place is PACKED at dinner time. This is an absurdly popular place to chow. Pizza is suprisingly tasty and pretty underrated. They often keep some warm for late night ordering, which is nice if you come in there late. Everyone that works there is generally very friendly (especially if you're friendly to them) and the patrons are the salt of the Earth types, a little loud and rowdy at times, but good blue collar people. The barstaff and waitstaff know how to give and take with the patrons, so expect a little playful sarcasm. They don't take plastic, so bring cash (there is an on site ATM, but with a $2 fee). Also, bring your appetite, as they don't skimp on portions.

Remember, this is an update, not a full review. Had a craving for lobster and since the Anchor is near the docks and brings in its own lobsters, they're reasonably priced. As of this review, I paid $19.95 for twin lobsters which came with 1 side. If you split them between 2 people, there's a $2 fee in order to prevent people from circumventing the single lobster price. The bartenders/servers are friendly locals like the patrons. When it comes to eating lobster only, I tend to get hyperfocused because it's not really a meal... it's an experience. And they were good to not bother me with silly small stuff... whereas most waitstaff, understandable, are checking with you ever 5 minutes to make sure everything is ok. During a lobsterfest, leave me alone. And, they did. Good n fresh, price is right... go get 'em!

Great dive bar atmosphere without actually being a dive. Drinks are cheap and stiffy. I get the twin lobster deal for like $14 every time I go. The owner owns her own lobster boats or something, so lobster is cheap and wicked fresh. Love this place.

  • Laura B.

This place is great! Price: Its hard to get more reasonable prices for anything here! Even the beer is cheap, the food is cheaper! Food Quality: I have yet to have a bad meal here from breakfast all the way to dinner. I love their marinated steak tips, stuffed clams (1.50 each!, you only need two), and all the specials I have ever had. Service: At the bar for food sometimes it is a little slow, but generally if you sit at the bar you are there to hang out for a while. Time to wait for seat: Sometimes this is the most frustrating part, as I have never been to the Anchor and seen it empty you might want to plan to wait some. Although I have personally never waited more than 10 mins. Atmosphere: It is one of the most laid back places I have been too, but probably not great for a date. :) However, everyone I have taken there has raved over the food!

This is one of the better cheap bars/pubs I've been to. The house beer (PBR) is $1.50 per glass, the food is cheap and decent, and the crowd is all local folks. They have a dining area if that's your thing, as well as pool tables, Keno, etc. Don't expect great, quick service here, but do expect the servers to be friendly and funny. We had a table of 7 people the other night, dinner+drinks+appetizers came out to $68. That's pretty damn cheap. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because they are CASH ONLY, something that annoys me greatly.

  • Steve F.

I go here all the time for lunch, dinner and to just hang out. Order an Anchor Beer (PBR) for 1.50 and the Anchor Burger (Bacon, cheese, chili) and you can't go wrong. This place is always packed for dinner. The best seats are at the bar or dining room but with more than 2 people that might be tough. It sucks sitting any where else because the waitresses sort of forget about you. The prices are very cheap but the food quality is better than you'd think. The main menu is pretty standard. Sandwiches, burgers, salads, fried and baked fish and things but the specials are normally pretty, um, special. Wow that is the worst description I have ever given. I think I need a red bull. I'll be there tonight!

Local dive bar but I really like it! The beer is cheap and good and the food was excellent! I had a baked scallop platter and everything about it makes me wantr to come back again. We went at 3 o'clock on a Monday afternoon and the place was pretty crowded! It was a lot of fun. I'm lucky - I can walk here!

It has been a year of anticipation waiting to go to the Anchor. A lot of my friends love it and say the food is good and the drinks are cheap. I think I had pictured this place to be certainly more glamorous than it was. We were sitting in the back section and our waitress was VERY slow and she only had three tables to tend to. I felt bad because she seemed very overwhelmed. However, on a Friday night you expect a happening place like this to have staff that can handle more than three tables and would check on drinks in a timely fashion. This was not the case we only had about two beers each because she was absent for most of our dinner. She brought the food out and my dish was not ready because she dropped it and they had to cook a new one. We ordered burgers and grilled cheese and I have no complaints on the food, since how can you really mess up bar food. I think I'd def. give the anchor another chance and I did see the steak tips someone ordered a table over and they looked fantastic. Maybe next time I'll try having more than two drinks. Also, cash only restaurant and I find that obnoxious.

I'll start like this. 16oz. Bud draughts for $1.75. My wifes seltzer was $2.00 but my beer was $1.75 (I told her she should think of switching over) I don't think I really need to any further than that but I will. Fried oysters? Outstanding. Seafood casserole? Outstanding The Anchor Burger? Outstanding. It may be a little rough around the edges for some folks. It's a blue collar bar but I'm a blue collar guy and the people who work there couldn't be nicer. Best thing about it? I just moved right down the street so it's a short walk there. And a short stumble home.

Went here for breakfast a couple weeks ago, finally. I had heard plenty of things about this place- great food, huge portions, strong drinks and blue collar crowd. Had to experience for myself. So I organized a brunch with my monthly brunch group to go here earlier this month. Huge portions for sure- my hungover self couldn't finish the omlette and fries because it was so much food. Reasonable prices, friendly service even though some staff members hadn't shown up that day and they had a couple of big groups (our group of 11, another of 20ish and another of 6 plus some regulars and standing room only to get one of the tables) I would go back here for sure.

Still a great place, we went for an Irene buster breakfast this weekend and loved it. We saw our fave bartender, Theresa and had some great laughs as usual. Breakfast burger was great, just like the fried clams, fried oysters, and twin lobsters.

Incredible lobster rolls. Bought two for take out dinner. Best lobster rolls on the North Shore. Seemed like the roll contained the meat from a whole lobster...tail and all. Only $15 each.

I've only been to The Anchor for breakfast (3 times: once with a group, once in a couple, once alone at the bar). The waitstaff couldn't be nicer. The breakfasts are standard fare, but CHEAP. The eggs were a little harder than ordered on two of the occasions, but otherwise The Anchor is a great value. The place and the customers tend to be a little rough around the edges, but that's why people like to go there. "Real food for real people" is the motto. I'll have to go back to try the bar experience soon. The dinner specials look intriguing. And CHEAP. DINNER UPDATE Since the breakfast review, I've had dinner at the Anchor four times. It's become a favorite of my son and daughter-in-law when they visit. My first venture was the double steamed lobsters for $18.99, and they were the sweetest winter lobsters I've ever eaten (I've eaten many). The baked potato and salad ($1 more) were fine. The sirloin steak (for $12.99) was perfectly cooked, tender, and juicy. The green beans and beets that I ordered with it were canned, but I'm not complaining. The lamb chops turned out to those Australian shoulder chops, and they were kind of muttony. Not recommended. However, the lightly fried haddock (for $7.99!) was succulent, and the homemade cole slaw was a great side with it. The customers and waitstaff are friendly and chatty. The Anchor doesn't try to be a classy place. It is what it is--great food cheap.

Oh so not good. We waited for what seemed like an eternity for what was less than bad food. We had baked haddock (dry, overcooked) and a ribs special (totally tasteless). For a side we ordered what we thought were garlic roasted potatoes - they turned out to be boiled and bland. The atmosphere didn't bother us. Its what we expected for 'cheap eats' but the eats were so lacking. We left hungry but not broke. Don't think I'm willing to try this place again.

I LOVE the food, HATE the service. I used to be a regular customer (their specials on the board are AWESOME), but i had several awful experiences. Im one if those quiet people but this was an awful experience. They have a crazy older blond waitress, who was rude to the people i brought with me to dinner, several times that we went and i tried to ignore it. I noticed that waitress delayed getting orders for several other tables. She never checked to see if we needed anything, took forever to bring our food, then our bill. BUT on top of that she complains that the cooks always yell at her for getting orders wrong. When i went to pay she hollered at me (on a Friday with a full dining room) when i asked why i "didnt tell her earlier" that i noticed her billing me for food i ordered but didnt get. Even the other waitresses were apologizing to me- but the fact is i love their food, i just dont understand why they have someone like this on their staff. Good luck to anyone going there for dinner on a friday night!

Ok, hopefully all of us reviewing this place won't ruin it but...this is seriously the cheapest bar on the northshore. I don't know if they didn't get the pricelist update ($1.50 drafts? $2 shots?) or what but...:-) The Anchor is a weird mixture of a townie/dive bar and a seafood restaurant.. and it sorta changes from night to night and hour to hour. Sometimes it's a more family friendly atmosphere, other times it's kinda edgy and rowdy. Definantely as it gets later and the restaurant side closes (although they seem to serve food at the bar pretty late) and folks have been there a while soaking up the cheap booze things can get a little more...um...frisky. The bar is right on the Beverly/Salem bridge (and I mean *right* on it - kinda hard to get to) and outside is very non-descript and easy to miss but the interior is an awesome mashup of New England clam-shack and Key West cabana-bar. The food is fresh, cheap (allowing for current seafood price fluctuations) and delicious. Rumour has it that one of the owners has a fishing boat out of the marina across the street but...never-the-less, they are sourcing some fresh local stuff somewhere. NOTE: they do not take credit cards - cash only (but there is an ATM in the bar)! So...cool place, but if I was hitting it with say...the wife or parents, I'd go on the early side (4-5pm). Out with all your rowdy friends: after 9.

Last Friday I won their Friday night Lobster Giveaway a beauty. I picked up an 11 lb. Lobster Saturday morning and ate for 3 days! The Anchor for anyone who loves fresh "Lobsta" loud crowds and cold beer can't be beat. Located at the base of the Beverly/Salem Bridge on the Beverly Cabot Street side. The owners has her own boat and goes out daily. Once a week I stop in for a lunch of two lobster at a cost of only $24.95. My second favorite is the baked haddock awesome meal for only 6.95; yeah you heard me right, this local North Shore favorite is famous for fresh food, lots of space and beer drinking from sun-up to almost sun-up. A true fisherman's atmosphere so if ya like Pub's, food and great drink prices check em' out. You cannot beat the prices.

As someone before me said.."It ain't pretty..but.." On our search for new breakfast places to try, we spotted and stopped at this local pub/bar. We were not disappointed with our meal. Our usual of 2 over easy, home fries, and hash were all well prepared and better than some places we have reviewed. The home fries, although well prepared, were not as tasty as we would like. Bacon was thick sliced and done to our liking....not greasy and not overly cooked. We found all of or usual items in the Special which also included 4 slices of French Toast, and 2 sausage patties. Te sausage patties should not be counted on to satisfy a sausage lover...but you can leave them on the plate as the price for all this food is cheap. Coffee and service were great but don't expect anything except a Bar Atmosphere. Great mens breakfast place, great price and a new experience. GO. The breakfast guys

the anchor is the type of place where you can show up in your finest sweatpants and fanny pack and totally fit in. i love the anchor for its no frills, laid back, diverse atmosphere. i think the anchor may be known as a townie/biker/dive bar, but honestly, i've seen many "types" of people there and it's a good time for everyone. everything on the menu that is described as "fried" is super good. i know most people think that fried food is fried food, but the anchor does fried really well. the anchor combo appetizer plate is really good. the jalapeño poppers are the cheddar cheese kind, as opposed to the cream cheese kind that i prefer, but they're very tasty. they have really good chicken fingers. i can't describe the coating but it's a really good one. the salads are pretty big and range between about $5 and $8, depending on what you get on top. i had the chef salad the other night and the deli meat was of very high quality, which i was sort of not expecting. i don't know why i wasn't. they used swiss cheese, too. it was good. something i get almost every time is the grilled cheese with bacon and tomato, which is super duper expensive at $3.49. i don't know how anyone can afford them, really. you must have to save up all week. they give you the option of white or wheat bread and the execution is top notch. good pickles on the side, too. the anchor burger is unreal. the burger itself is always prepared exactly to order and the chili on top is excellent. i've heard the seafood is really good, and they always have twin lobsters for super cheap prices. the specials are always diverse and interesting, and i've enjoyed them the times i've gotten them. the waitstaff treats everyone like a regular, which is awesome. i find them to be very attentive, unless it's a friday night when they're running around like madmen/women, but they still take care of you as much and as often as possible. i know a lot of people who go to the anchor often, and you're pretty much a stuck up a-hole if you don't try this place at least once. like i said, i know this place has a (very inaccurate) repuation but there's something for everyone. for real. i think the only problem is the juke box. there are only so many "mob hits" that are worth hearing. p.s. cheapie drinks! what what! UPDATE 5/5/09: if you ever see swordfish on the menu, ORDER IT WITHOUT THOUGHT. i've heard that the owner has a fishing boat, and i am 187% sure my swordfish was caught that day. it was so delicious and so expertly cooked, and i'm pretty sure it was $10 with two sides. it was on the specials menu but it'll probably reappear. it was absolutely amazing. more reason to want to make babies with the anchor.

Oh the Anchor, where to begin. This was my first North Shore dive bar experience and I'll tell you there are lots of interesting people. The food and drinks are cheap and very good. I celebrated the best 24th birthday of my life at this place and no one could say they couldn't afford to come. We had 22 people in the large room, but I guess they don't normally do large parties, so they made the guy who took the call wait on us. He was great and served everyone correctly and as fast as he possibly could. The bill for the whole party (meals, drinks, and apps) came to $392.61 and after an added 20% gratuity it was $471.13. I think we gave the guy like $490-500. Do they math though and it comes out to roughly $22/person for apps, meals, drinks, and a very happy birthday girl! Just be aware this place is CASH ONLY.

So I'll be honest, I always thought this was a trashy dive bar, but then a friend convinced me to try it and I was wholly surprised. The food is awsome, the menu is a good size and the prices are so low. The drinks are also strong. It is a large bar but can be pretty busy. It's worth the wait, though.

I was really looking forward to experiencing "The Anchor" but it didn't happen. This establishment doesn't accept credit cards only CA$H! They do have an ATM inside next to the bar which is convenient but I mean come on. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't this the 21 Century?

What a gem of a dive bar that serves great food for a great price. We had 2 steamed lobsters (at least 3 lbs), for $21. It was well cooked and served with clarified butter. The steak tips with scallops were good as well ($15); it was a lot of food. Another guest there was having a b-day party and gave use 2 slices of cake. What a nice place.

Excellent place...it's a true North Shore gem...it has everything you need from the townie element, old salty boaters (I was going to say seamen but that may gross people out), cheap food and cheap beer. The steak tip dinner is well worth it (7.95) and wash that down with a cold Anchor draft (1.50)...

This place just keeps getting better. Have never had a bad meal and have only once,in my initial review got an OK meal. I have pretty much ate once or twice a week there now for about a year and nowhere cooks fish more perfectly!! As for the 2 star review, because they got the 4.25 fish and chips at a place across from a fishing pier owned by a fisher/lobsterlady,how many stars do you get? 8.25 get a huge piece of fresh haddock cooked to perfection with 2 sides but you choose the Van de Kamps, really who does that?

Great food and great prices! Only problem is that it is ALWAYS crowded and sometimes tough to get a seat.

This is by far my favorite bar on the North Shore....and I can walk there! I would not say that I go to the anchor for the food, but the food is good! Whenever any of my friends are visiting they can't believe how cheap the drinks are. You can get a strong voda tonic in a pint class and it is SO cheap...get the same one at a bar in boston or nyc and it would be quadruple the price. The customers are always in a good mood and always willing to strike up a discussion. I don't usually like people, but I like the people here. I have never had a bad experience with anyone here. The only thing I would say, negatively, would be that they do not accept out of state IDs. My sister is turing 40 next month, but she looks young. They gave her some trouble when she showed them her out of state ID. Luckily she had a passport, but all the way from NYC and she can't even get a drink? Love the anchor, love the pool table, the camraderie, the drinks, the food, the proximity to my home, and the overall feel of the place. LOVE it.

My family just ate here for the first time, and the meal was very good. I had grilled sea bass, which was perfect, and quite a bargain at $10. My wife had broiled haddock, which she said was overcooked, but that is what you might expect at an old-school place like this. My 7-year-old daughter had the chowder and kid's pizza, which she said were excellent. The waitress was friendly and very accommodating. This is definitely one of the most reasonably priced quality restaurants in the area. We will definitely be back! Twin Lobsters 21$ !!!!

HAHA the Anchor. I lived next door for almost three years, and one thing I have to say is this place is cheap. You can get solid seafood for low low prices. As for the bar, there beer is decent and they always have a beer night where domestics are 1.50. So don't be surprised that when I say, if you like salty sailors, playing keno and getting a lot of food and drink for your money, you'll like the Anchor
