Solid four stars! Great food, good pricing, friendly staff. They serve breakfast for lunch, love that! The quirky atmosphere is a bit busy and could be too much for someone who is a minimalist. The only problem I see here is the booths are too small. You literally cannot fit four tall people is one booth without playing footsie or touching knees.

For two years this has been my go to spot. I tried others in the Andover area and while there are other places to get a decent breakfast the competition isn't close: Shawsheen Luncheonette is the best breakfast you can find anywhere around this area. Saturdays at 7am you can find me ordering one of their many hash offerings. Staff is great if you are a regular but I can see someone easily being frustrated if they are a new customer and if you are there at a busy time. YES, it is worth the wait: peak hours can mean 30 minute wait or more but you can't find better breakfast in a 30 mile radius. Coffee is nothing special so I don't know why some maniac was touting its merits but with so many great options and consistently great food you shouldn't care. Spicy pork hash, chicken hash are tops. The breakfast sandwich is excellent also but be warned: they do not have sausage PATTIES so if you get a sandwich with sausage you'll have to deal with butterflied links and it makes for some messy eating. This is not the place for fresh-squeezed orange juice, espresso drinks and brioche. This is the place for regular coffee, great solid food and friendly service. They do have some amazing healthy options like the breakfast salad. I was hoping for the spicy pork hash others had mentioned, but they didn't have it that day. They are able to add poblanos to the chicken hash. I had 2 eggs over hard, hash browns and wheat toast. I was surprised that the chicken hash was just hash browns, chicken pieces and poblanos. Usually there are onions at least. It was good chicken, wonderfully crunchy hash browns and the eggs were done perfectly, so not much to complain about. Solid food with updated healthy options in a classic diner setting make Shawseens worth a try.

Good food and variety. Coffee not so good, ie cheap. A little on the expensive side. Service was almost not existent for drink refills. Otherwise service was friendly. Just read someone else really liked the coffee?!? For frame of reference, I'm originally from Lower New York state, and have lived in MA for more than half of my life. Also have traveled extensively around the world. Maybe that one person who liked the coffee was native to Andover, MA? The fruit is disgusting. The regular pancakes taste like bacon grease. 2.0 stars

By far the best breakfast and lunch menu in Andover! I've been going to the Shawsheen Luncheonette for about 8 years now and they never falter in quality, consistency, and service. It's home-cooked, bar none. You know you're at the right place when you see a line forming outside their door. The wait is worth it, trust me.

I'm giving 5 stars because the food is so good it worth it and the service was great .... AND the coffee was great too ! Very robust an flavorful. I wish I had this place in my town so I could come back every day. Great job to the owner of this place and to all of the effort that goes in to running a joint like this!! Thanks !

We all enjoyed our breakfast at Shawsheen. It's a small place and it's very busy on a Sunday morning. It was well worth the twenty minute wait to get a table. Delicious food & great service.

We live very.close to this place and have seen lines put.of the door almost every weekend. We wanted to go there for a while and finally we gad a chance this past weekend The place is very small and also prices are big. The food is I guess the same as other places since if u look at it how differebt can an omelet or waffle be I got veggie onelet with ghost pepper cheese which was def spicy and the omelet was the same as other people so was potatoes and hash brown. My wife had a plain waffle which looked really good The place is not bad at all but then again how different can a breakfast be since I felt I had same kind of omelet and orange juice at other places for cheaper price. Def andover location prices. Go try it out I can tell you you wont be disappointed but also wont be wow'd

A town diner, which is impeccably clean and has amazing service. I'd recommend going early as the line can get quite long. Diner food, but elevated. They make all of the diner food you'd expect to see, plus more- and it has unexpected twists, check the specials menu they are popping something new on there from time to time. A fresh-toast cinnamon roll was on special this particular day, I didn't order it but it sounds sinful! The coffee was was fresh and they kept it coming, The food was pretty good. The portions were ginormous and flavorful. They had real deal maple syrup, which is a BIG plus. The only drawback was that the bacon wasn't as crisp and fresh as I'd like it to be. The menu here has something for everyone. Go when you're hungry and bring friends so you can try what they order too!

Great place for breakfast or lunch! Lively and a bit noisy this small place gets crowded on weekends but waiting for a table is worth it. The food is yummy (try the cinnamon french toast), the service is always good and very attentive.....but the most important thing, the coffee is terrific!

  • Brian W.

Another reviewer summed it up best - small place with big prices. With that said, if you can get a table, the food is tasty and just what you'd expect at a local town diner. The specials menu was quite large so that comes in handy if you want something other than the usual diner fare. There was no separate gluten free menu or offerings, but the waitress and staff were helpful in accommodating by subbing fruit instead of toast.

Service is attentive; meal variety is great; everything is terrific; coffee is perfectly brewed; only eaten there 100+ times!!!

Great breakfast stop on our way to Maine. Seating is limited, but food is delicious. The Old Goat Omlet was divine.

Until today this was one of my favorite breakfast spots where I was willing to wait in line OUTSIDE in the cold and snow of winter or the heat of summer for their great breakfast menu. Today, Mothers Day, that all changed. Knowing it was hot out, 80 degrees, and that we would be waiting in a long line in the sun, I was prepared like any good mom. Sunscreen for myself and kids and a liter bottle of water to share as we all know there is nothing worse then hungry kids saying how much longer and I'm thirsty. When we finally get in and were seated the first thing out of our waitresses mouth was not "Happy Mothers Day" or "Good morning" it was "No outside beverages. You know our house rules are no outside drinks. We sell water here. " Now I understand it is rude to bring in a Starbucks or DD coffee but really. In the 15+ years I have been going there I have gotten many free glasses of water with my coffee but I have NEVER purchased a bottle of water. What harm would it have been for after a simple good morning for her to say would you mind if I brought you all a glass of water we prefer no outside beverages? Instead a regular customer of 15 years was embarrassed in front of her children, left without breakfast and won't be returning. I am also a small business owner and my motto is the customer is always right. Clearly that is not the motto here.

I usually don't wait in line the 'nuthin' but my husband wanted a good local diner. Worth the wait. Perfect coffee blend- interesting and delicious omelette. Try the spicy pork hash! Cute, well kept, comfortable and hip atmosphere.

Open for breakfast and lunch only, the breakfast options are varied and delicious. They make it a point to have some interesting choices, not just the standard fare, although they have that too. My server, Jen, was friendly and helpful. A great place to get a nice breakfast.

My favorite place in town to get breakfast! Without a doubt, the steak and cheese omelette is my go-to breakfast. I haven't tried a steak and cheese omelette out there that compares - and I have tried a lot of them!! The line can look intimidating but it moves quickly - service is always very quick and efficient.

I've had breakfast at the Shawsheen Diner on several occasions. The service is fast and the food is excellent. I'm a big fan of the meatloaf, as well as the corn pancake cooked over an egg with either ham, sausage or bacon cooked on top. The hash omelette is pretty awesome too. The homefries are nice and crisp (country style), but they do have hash browns too. I have also eaten here for lunch, but I usually order a breakfast food. Home cooking at its best at this place. It can get busy (and noisy) even at times when you think it might not be. I don't think the prices here are any more expensive than any other quality breakfast restaurant. The servers here couldn't be any more friendly and they really hustle!! My only complaint would be the seats at the counter, those small old style stools with no back can get uncomfortable pretty quickly. Highly recommend!

My family favorite breakfast place!! We love it here absolutely live the ambiance the people the waitstaff awesome pelo down to earth very nice. My personal favorite Ally and Mandy they are great!!! Their Mom very very nice. When walk in you SMELL the fresh food and the Cooks are AWESOME! My personal favorite is the Fiesta (my way of course ) the regular fiesta with over medium eggs and corn beef hash in the bottom !!!! It's the best combination I just love it and now my daughter 15 loves it too, her favorite is the eggs Benedict home made hollandaise sauce sooo good. My husband favorite is chicken hash with eggs and hash breeds and wheat toast he just loves it. My son 13 loves the pancakes awesome size great taste also homemade!!! Everything is fresh to order that's what I love ! There is not a lot of places that make homemade corn beef hash is rather by a can or who knows!!! But NOT the Luncheonette is made here fresh everyday !!!!!!! I can't rave about this place enough this is why WE look forward for our Sunday breakfast at the luncheonette !!!! You should try it!!! I love this place. It's the best in the area to my knowledge .wich would explain the wait sometimes. Mum and the girls are awesome and very friendly except for one of the waitresses. You'll know who it is when you get there lol. I can hardly wait for my Sunday breakfast.

When you walk in, you notice right away the tie-dye decor everywhere including the waittress's shirts. I've driven by this place a million times on my way to 495, but I've never eaten here until now! Parking was definitely not easy because the restaurant is located at the intersection of 28 and 133, so there are a few street parking spots and we were lucky enough to grab one. Andrew had the chocolate chip pancakes. These things are huge! Nothing too out of the ordinary. as soon as this came out we slathered it in butter and syrup and inhaled it! Joe usually loves to salty then sweet, but I like to go back and forth so we ate half of the chocolate chip pancakes first. They were sweet and fluffy. I liked that the chocolate chip flavor was not overbearing in the dish, just the right balance between pancake and chocolate. For our salty dish, I was torn between the corn hash which is what they are known for and getting something with eggs.....In the end, eggs won. Corn hash is really a hit or miss for me, only one place has ever impressed me. So we went with the bacon and cheese omelette which was just OK. what really stood out was the hash brown! they were crispy and yummy.

This is what a local, home town restaurant should be - friendly, inviting and great food served in generous proportions! Every time we come here we ask ourselves the same question - why don't we come her more often??? We had omelets - 'The Old Goat' with goat cheese and the Italian sausage with onions and Swiss cheese. The hash browns (and you have a choice of string or red potatoes!!!) and home made corned beef hash are out of this world. As we were finishing they had begun t serve lunch - and boy, did that look good, too!!! We'll be back soon...promise!

The Shawsheen Luncheonette is one of those curious places that I see every single day but have never actually stopped in to eat. I sit at that traffic light on my way to work each morning, and sometimes I take a lazy look through the windows. It's always pretty busy looking and seems to be a local favorite. Finally I had a chance to drop by for lunch with my coworkers, and it was yummy! I actually thought it was going to be larger on the inside, but it was squishy, a bit disappointingly so. The place was hopping though, and that's always a good sign at lunch. Service was quick and friendly. It was pretty loud so it was difficult to hear anything. They had a lobster roll listed on the menu, and the price was really decent ($13) and it was fabulous - the roll split down the middle because it couldn't hold all the meat, and everything was fantastically fresh. I'm already daydreaming about when I can go back again, but as a special item I know it won't always be available!

Went for breakfast on a weekday with two friends. Great atmosphere and service. Staff was extremely welcoming, every staff member we interacted with was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was extremely good, what stands out is the homemade hash (they have daily specials). We all got the Mac and Cheese Hash, which was incredibly good. Definitely will go back next time we get together for breakfast.

Rude wait staff. My coffee was brought to the table with the creamer bowl on top of it . And when I asked for a new one I got attitude like somehow I was wrong.

Perfect breakfast place. Fresh delicious food, large portions lots of choices for healthy dining. Great wait staff and neighborhood friendly atmosphere.

  • Han M.

Really like this place. It's a hole in the wall but the staff and the food never disappoints. Waiting in line outside is the only downfall.... no place to sit or shelter yourself from the elements.... worth it once you get inside but then you feel rushed to eat and leave because others are waiting to be seated after you.

    (4)
  • Al R.

Food always decent, and on weekends the wait is always long. A little pricey, but based on "supply and demand", if I were the owners I'd inflate my prices too. If you go there expecting a wait, loud restaurant, small table, and reasonable food you'll get what you want. Recommend the specialty pancakes or waffles with fruit.

  • Zack R.

Both the spicy pork hash & chilling are amazing, BUT they never have them for breakfast........ Don't ask me why, but these dishes are as elusive as hens teeth. Cute place to check out for breakfast or lunch. Can get very crowded. Some wait staff better than others. You won't go home hungry, but might not always get what you want. Don't bother asking why they don't make more pork hash as you'll just get a dirty look. Mamma bear runs the show here 100%.

We were looking for a place to eat brunch at noon one Sunday and luckily stumbled upon this place. I'm usually very "type-A" when it comes to trying new places and I like to do my research, so I was relieved after our impulsive, unresearched visit that this place was the real deal. The restaurant itself is very small and cozy, and there was a wait at the door to be seated. The mood while waiting will really depend on how many people are crammed into the front entrance, the weather outside, and how hungry you are. They have booths and counter seating; as other reviewers have stated, it's first come, first served. It can get a bit loud, depending on who's around you, but once you're seated it's very relaxed and we didn't really notice that people were coming and going. The variety on the menu is really great, and I was impressed by some of the non-traditional items (e.g. johnny cakes, coffee roll french toast, etc.). I've tried quite a few items at this point, and my favorite, hands down, is the johnny cake/eggs in a basket hybrid that consists of a johnny cake with an egg and your choice of sausage, bacon, or ham cooked into the center (second runner up is the cinnamon french toast). Omelets are huge, home fries are well seasoned, and the coffee is excellent and always flowing. The service is always friendly and attentive, and they do a really great job at turning tables over quickly without making you feel rushed. We try to come as often as our schedules allow. Definitely a must try!!

Easy to find, and not a terrible wait for a weekend brunch spot. It's first come first serve, and despite the wait, the servers don't rush you or make you feel like they need to turn the table faster. Excellent prices and a really cool (albeit tiny!) atmosphere. Clean bathrooms, too! Tip: wear your warmest coat if you plan on going during the winter months. Most likely you'll be waiting outside.

Went here for breakfast with my friend and the food was very good. But the waitress gave me a hard time for bringing in my latte from a real coffee shop...hence the three stars, unless you can make me a skinny hazelnut latte that compares to the one I get at a real coffee shop, shut it, and let me drink my beverage, it's not going to kill you.

Awesome eclectic breakfast & lunch joint! Friendly courteous waitstaff who are also very attentive. Great family restaurant all of the kids love it. Food is standard breakfast & diner type lunch fare. Reasonably priced and good quality.

If you are in the area or live in the area you should do yourself a favor and try this place out. Breakfast is outstanding. I have been coming here for a few years and sadly never wrote up about this great find until now. Egg white veggie omelette was stuffed with veggies and cooked perfect. I really like to indulge in their pancakes (chocolate chip and lemon blueberry are my recent favorites) My nephews love the grilled coffee rolls and breakfast sandwiches. The wait usually goes by fast. The waitstaff is attentive but not overly pushy to turn your table. Recent renovations only make this place better. If you are looking for a great breakfast give it a try you will be glad you did.

Shawsheen Luncheonette was recommended to my friends and me when we were looking for breakfast after a race in town. It was a Sunday at about 11:00 and there was a line outside. We parked in the lot across the street because we were in 3 cars. There were 2 spaces right out front but this was easier. The wait wasn't that long and the staff seems to know who is where in line (no line jumpers!). We 4 were quickly seated at a booth and we had our drinks within 5 minutes. The coffee was really good! I decided to try something different in the chicken hash and it did not disappoint! I was happy to be asked if I wanted my English muffin grilled or toasted because I love grilled muffins. Lots of non traditional options will keep me coming back.

  • Justin B.

Great food, good service. you can find parking in the back behind the Package store. If i can say anything bad it would be the seating and space. If your not in a booth it could get tight. Not much room to wait. you can wait outside on a good day and that's not too bad but on a cold or rainy day not a good idea. All in all my favorite breakfast joint in the area. Never not had a good meal.

The wait will seems long but the rollover is really fast. If it was busy just wait your turn it defiantly worth the wait. I had the Chili scrambled egg and it was soooo good, the kids took M&M pancakes and Nutella stuffed French toast, both were super happy :D. One of the best breakfast place

  • Stephen C.

Excellent food and easy parking. I had a great Mediterranean egg white omelette and my girlfriend stated that she may have had the "best French toast I've ever had" there. It smelled fantastic too - like melted cinnamon toast crunch. Decor is moderately entertaining too. There are signs scattered around the restaurant praising good deeds and motivational sayings about life which is perfectly ironic as this place supplies zero motivation to eat healthy as you proceed to shove sugar and fat into your body. While you're here check out some of Andover's beautiful houses and the Addison Museum of American Art.

Recently went to grab breakfast and it was still superb. Eggs, bacon, and white is my usual. I have never been disappointed in all the years I have been going. Service is great and the coffee is good. I have yet to have lunch here, but it really is a breakfast place so no matter. I tend to avoid the weekends because it's so crowded abd yes parking has always been difficult, but there are spots within walking distance around the corner or over by Balmoral, so you can park without too much hassle.

This was literally something I found at 5am while I could not sleep, woke up around 8 showered, out the door and on the way. The parking was relatively simple they have a small lot, but also street parking is available. When we walked in we were greeted by loud noise, people talking, various smells, the decor, food being made and consumed truly a delightful diner atmosphere. Jen O. Our waitress sat us down at a small table and so I began to search the menu. I went with a jumbo strawberry milk something right out of my own kitchen nice tall cold, glass of pink milk, my partner ordered a coffee which both were promptly brought to our table. The menu was great lots to choose from specials on the board and all over the diner which was fun it read the different quotes on the wall. I decided in Texas Johnny, side order of the freshly prepared spicy pork hash and single order of twisted French toast. My partner chose the salmon omelet with home fries. After our order Jen offered to move us to a bigger table because we would not fit at this small table with my ordering a taste of all things lol. She moved us and told us to take our stuff she would get the rest. Jen was very sweet and made us feel quite comfortable. As we chatted my partner began to drink my strawberry milk to taste, then after about a quarter glass decided it was some of the best she has had considering she doesn't like to drink milk, the coffee was normal coffee not burnt but nothing amazing. Our food came out about 8 minutes later piping hot. First was the twisted French toast which I thought "this is the single order" due to the large portion. Taking that first bite was amazing. Then came the spicy pork hash, which was pulled pork, grilled onions and pepper mixed with hash brown. This was all sorts of delicious!!! Next was my Texas Johnny which consisted of a corn meal pancake (Johnny) covered with a 3 egg omelet topped with chili. Chili was meaty, chunks of peppers opinions tomatoes black beans spices it was just tasty, coupled with Johnny cake and egg. I didn't put anything else on it because the favors were on point. My partner salmon omelet was good, a little heavy on the cream cheese and the salmon was a little dry but not enough to where the dish was in anyway diminished. She also had a side order or maple turkey back which were HUGE! She delightfully ate that up with toast that was pre-Buttered. The side of home fries were nicely cooked but a little under seasoned. As we both talked and are one could not help but notice the all female staff from cook to servers it was top notch service. When Jen was serving other tables other waitresses would come around to freshen up our coffee and ask how we enjoyed it. All in all after all that was consumed and then taken home we spent a little under $35 which felt to little considering all the large portions and the quality of the food. This will be on my list of places to take guest. I would highly recommend it, try anything on the menu, I am sure you cannot go wrong.

The variety of food is great, the taste is great too. My only problem is that during my last two visits the server always forgot to bring my toasts. I did ask for it but they never came until I decided to pass them since I was almost done eating anyway. They could add more healthy choices of drinks, like freshly squeezed juices, healthy smoothies, etc. When I came here I definitely gave up on counting the calories that I consumed, but then again, that is why we eat here once a month at the most. All in all, great place and great food.

Believe the hype! Went here twice over two days, once for breakfast by myself, and then takeout lunch for a large team. Breakfast was awesome. The Shawsheen omelet was great, and the portions (which included a potato / fruit, and bread) were easily big enough to share. Everything I saw coming off the grill looked great. For lunch, ordered a variety of wraps and subs. Good reviews from the team on all. The homemade chips were a big hit. This is a family owned place and has a great vibe Seemed to be a lot of regulars who got alternately picked on and consoled by the light hearted staff. Some logistics: Not a of parking, and this place gets busy. Only open for breakfast and lunch, and closed on Monday.

Hot dog and baked beans omelet! #Boston #Beantown #Mass That was my tip upon visiting the first time and I'm so happy that I went with the hot dog and baked beans omelet. I knew that Mass was renowned for their beans and now I know why. The omelet that I ordered, although seemingly an odd combination, was absolutely FANTASTIC. The diner itself was cozy and the walls were plastered with fun Mass facts and tie-dye tshirts. I would gladly revisit this place and recommend it as one of the best breakfast places that Mass has to offer!

This has quickly become one of my favorite breakfast places. Here are all the positive points about this place: 1. Always busy, quick turn around, never a long wait for a table. 2. Parking is never an issue. Park on the street out in front, or around in the small parking lot in the back. 3. ENORMOUS CHOCOLATE CHIP PANCAKES. AND IN THE OFF CHANCE THEY ARE OUT OF CHOCOLATE CHIPS (like 2 weeks ago), THEY OFFER M&M PANCAKES! 4. Always friendly, personable staff. Love them all. 5. Crazy variety of omelets...everything from veggie, to mediterranean, to hot dog, to buffalo chicken, to lamb's tongue. Just kidding about the last one, in case you're still reading... 6. Cheap. Now...the negatives... For the love of God, ENOUGH ALREADY of the tie-dye uniforms!!! You are hurting my hungover brain looking at you!!!! That's about it for the negs. But it's quite enough.

They are NOT handicap accessible. This was an unfortunate realization for me and my boyfriend, 26 years, who has paralysis from the shoulders down due to a spinal cord injury. He could not get inside, as there is a large step at the only entrance, after we waited outside in the heat for about 10 minutes before we realized, I went inside to ask a waitress, who appeared to busy to concern herself with my inquire, who shrugged her shoulders when i asked if there was ramp entrance anywhere in the building for wheel chair access, and who eventually stated "no" without apology or eye contact. We retreated to our van and headed home :( I am only upset, because it would be very simple to make a small adjustment to the one small step outside the building to allow fair access to those whose physical ailments leave them bound to a chair. And it surely is not hard to entertain a question with a smile.

As per usual, I got kind of lost while using my GPS while trying to find a Starbucks. Luckily, I ended up in a parking lot right across the street from Shawsheen Luncheonette. My fiance was part of a wedding, so I was alone for a few hours before the wedding started. I immediately felt comfortable sitting at the bar with people who appeared to be regulars. The amazingly friendly waitress asked me if I wanted coffee and a paper. These people knew how to deal with a lone diner! I ordered the salmon omelet special. It was ok... not great, but not bad. Typical diner food. There were a lot of specials and a lot of other interesting things on the menu. If I went back, I would definitely get something different. Unfortunately, we had brunch plans with the wedding party the day after the wedding, or I would have brought my fiance back here. Great place to stumble upon!

This is a excellent (but not cheap - its in Andover) breakfast spot. This time we had a chile cheese omelette (which did have home-made chili), excellent hash browns, and a really good, eggy waffle with raspberries and cream. The people next to us at the counter (always sit at the counter if they have one) had cinnamon roll French toast and French toast with bananas and nutella - both of which looked great, but may not so healthy. Service is good, the place is always really busy, and the noise level is high

I can't believe I haven't written a review for this place; I've been here countless times over the past few years since work is close by. This is a great, small 'diner' serving breakfast and lunch at a reasonable price. I can honestly say I've never had a bad meal here; there are always delicious specials, the service is good, and the portions are generous. I'll continue to enjoy lunch here as long as I am close!

My opinion this place is very over Rated and not worth the wait. I been here 6 times and very time my food was cold and my pancakes where burnt a little and had to wait a long time to get them nope never again

I used to love Carleen's but the quality of the food has increasingly declined. So when I found out about this spot I was in heaven. I had the buffalo chicken omelette and it was delicious. I ordered a pancake for my kid and it was also very tasty, as well. I know some people had complain about their level of tolerance with kids, but they were great with mine even though he was a bit cranky. The service was a bit absent at times especially since they were not that busy. Other thank that everything else was great.

So I've been here quite a few times. So I figured, "hey, I'll review it." Anyways, this place is in the southern part of town, not far from the major highways. The place itself is in a mini-sort of plaza near a car dealership and Dunkin Donuts, and while the Dunkin Donuts serves as a good place for the impatient crowd to get their breakfast, having this place sharing a parking lot with a liquor store and a hair salon makes it slightly more difficult on certain days (saturdays and sundays). Don't worry however, there is a lot on the other side of the street if you don't mind a little walking. (Good tip for parking, if you see people standing outside or at the door, there is no parking available behind the building.) The place itself is a little small, but the booths are packed relatively densely but not terrible, so don't worry you won't be sharing your coffee with the guy next to you. There are traditional booths, tables with seats, and a bar where I typically enjoy sitting. Please, pick your pleasure and enjoy. Service is usually good, but with every place you just may get stuck with that bad apple employee. Food/drink wise... They have really good coffee. I enjoy strong coffee usually but this place has a really good medium-ish roast. In addition to coffee, they have the normal, water, orange juice, milk etc. For food, they also have the usual departments. Muffins, sausage, bacon, bagels, pancakes, toast, fruit dishes etc. To really sum it up, this place is your all-around luncheonette that doesn't take what they make to the extreme but do it well. Prices are fair to midland. Comparable prices from 2-4 diners to anywhere else in the area. Tips are welcome and expected :) S.O.

The food was awesome! Especially because our waitress Celanir was very accommodating to our very specific order, only thing though is the name Shawsheen doesn't do the place justice! Tootles

We went here after a friend told us about their "homemade" spicy pork hash. We went on a Sunday morning before 9:00 and it was sold out. The waitress reports that it sells out in 1 day. Not sure how much they make or when a day starts but it was my loss. I went with the corned beef has which was decent, not too greasy. Parking was tight, and we waited for a waitress to seat us (no hostess) and wait for a table. The process seemed unorganized. Most of the help seems focused on the the counter and not too many are out in the dining room area. $10 omlettes. However, some creative items listed on the menu such as johnnycakes. Not to many places offer those anymore. They offer dinner on Fridays until 7:00. The thing is, I don't know many who eat this day and age before 7:00. I may go back for the pork hash, if its available. 2 Sunday breakfasts: $23.00

After dropping by the Shawsheen Luncheonette, my favorite breakfast place, this week I realized I ought to review it! I've lived in the area for almost 8 years now (gulp) and have been here countless times. The service and food are solidly good. It gets crazy-busy on weekends, and there are only a few street parking spaces on 133, but the lot on Poor Street has a few more, as does the municipal lot on the other side of 28. Yes, there are snarky signs and tie-dye galore but I find this to be part of the charm. As a parent, I have no problem with signage requesting I not bringing in outside food, strollers (the place is small), or permit my kids to ransack the condiments. Honestly, I like the reinforcement that people should be courteous in public. Now then, the food. I've seen many statements about standard diner fare but I don't know that most diners have offerings like Eggs Fiesta (my fave) or Texas Johnny. The specials can get pretty adventurous, too, I remember a killer crab Florentine omelet one summer. I also appreciate some of the healthier offerings available like their current Resolution offering (egg whites, cantaloupe, and possibly cottage cheese) , whole wheat English muffins, and fresh fruit as a side. Ultimately the only time I've been disappointed at the Shawsheen Luncheonette has been when the wait was just too long and my party elected not to wait. And I only remember that happening once.

The Shawsheen Luncheonette serves your typical diner fare: breakfast items, sandwiches, specials. There is nothing here inventive or spectacular; however, the food is solid. Why only two stars? As others have mentioned, there is an abundance of signs, scolding signs, that I don't believe are necessary. If my boys want to stack the jellies at the table, who cares? There are other signs as well including those prohibiting strollers. It is a small diner so don't even bother going on a weekend. The parking is also difficult. Some of the other reviewers have attempted to shuffle these issues aside; but, they are important considerations to keep in mind. There are other diners that provide better accommodations without the prohibitions.

Overall best gourmet breakfast and lunch around. Great soups. Noisy, crowded as you would expect a diner to be. Not cheap. Specials are creative, always changing, and worth trying. A favorite is the lobster eggs Benedict. Service is fair to good.

This place has the best diner coffee I think I've ever had. I've never had a disappointing breakfast here. Omelets are huge with tons of fresh veggies. My other half gets the Shamrock Bateson and swears by it. If you can find a parking spot, you have to try it.

Totally hip breakfast spot that mixes old school coffee shop decor with some nostalgic artwork. The Johnny cakes were great (they have some corn meal vs. pancakes which don't) and I also enjoyed a giant egg white omelette with cheddar and mushrooms. Hope to get back to Andover soon!

I've seen reviews on other sites about the Shawsheen Luncheonette with various complaints about bringing children here, long wait, no parking, etc. So when I first came here, I was nervous. It's close to my house, and my old favorite breakfast place closed, so I wanted to like it. Luckily I did! And all the times I've been since, I have had none of the problems I've read about on the other review sites. Everyone is nice and pleasant, I've never waited longer than 10-15 minutes for a table, even on a weekend morning. I've walked here before, but whenever we drive, there's never been trouble finding a parking spot either in the lot or along the road next to it. The lot is small, but so is the restaurant. There are also a few street parking spots out front. There are regulars who have their spots saved at the counter for the time and days they always come. I love that about the Shawsheen. It's just a small, no-frills local luncheonette. And I can 100% say I have not experienced or witnessed any of the staff there being rude. The food is good, though not entirely healthy. I'm a big fan of the grilled blueberry muffin. Sandwiches for lunch are also good with plenty to choose from. Sundays they serve breakfast all day, and Fridays they are open for dinner. By the way, there are signs right on the door that state no strollers (undoubtedly due to lack of space) and no outside food (yes, even for children). There are also notes on the tables saying no playing with the jams. I personally don't think they're unreasonable. On another site I read people complaining about these rules. They're there for a reason, so if you're not okay with them, then don't even walk in the door in the first place if you're planning to disobey them.

They have just about everything you could ask for at a breakfast place, and more. I'm a big hash fan and the spicy pork hash was out of this world. My girlfriend got an omelette that took up the whole plate (and was delicious too). And we split a melt-in-your-mouth cinnamon bun french toast, it was to die for. I definitely recommend it for breakfast (haven't been for lunch), you might have to wait, but it's worth it!

Shawsheen has great egg white omelet's and fresh - yes I said fresh - fruit. None of that canned syrupy stuff. This reason alone is why I keep going back. Price is reasonable too at about $12 a meal. Parking is scarce and there is always a wait. Prepare to battle to keep your place in line and get a booth! Another negative: Aside from their tie dye theme, they have this one table for two set up in the most POOR location. Your stuck in the middle of an already very crowded isle, directly next to, almost sharing, another booth full of people. I've been placed there twice and it is very awkward. We asked to be moved both times.

Wish there were more places like this! Great food, awesome staff, and fun atmosphere! Wish they were open later than 2:00, but then again, it is a luncheonette!

We've tried this place twice, and do plan to go back... but both times something has been subpar. The first time, we had a good server, but most of the breakfast items we had our eye on were unavailable. Our meals arrived, and were OK, but there's something to be said for craving something and missing the mark. We most recently visited in early June, on a Friday, and despite the day it will still pretty crowded but not overly so. The food was great - my hubby had a salsa/egg dish and I had a bacon/egg/cheese sammy (I'm a conoisseur). The gal who waited on us was uncomfortable to say the least - she made very weird remarks, cracked strange, off color jokes, and basically made us cringe every time she walked by the table. I won't knock off points for her but I can only hope we get a different server next time. I hope that next time we can be truly impressed by both service and the food together!

I eat breakfast at the Luncheonette more weekends than not. It has great diner food and coffee...and almost always great service, which seems a rarity nowadays. Their veggie omelette is full of fresh vegetables that aren't over-cooked. The spicy pork hash (not always available) is one of my favorite meals...just fantastic. If you haven't had "Johnny cakes" before and you like corn muffins/bread, do yourself a favor and order some up. I've only eaten lunch here twice. Lobster roll was delicious although a bit too much mayo for me...I've had better but I also ordered it again the next time so not too bad. It came with homemade potato chips that were really yummy too. Not the cheapest place to eat in the area, but the best food and service that I've found in the area for breakfast.

Great diner food in a quaint little place. The waitstaff wears tye dye shirts, there's new age-y quotes on the walls, and the johnnycakes are great. Great service, totally reasonable prices.

I have been here a few times, always on sundays. This place is very consistent. The food is always above average. Service is decent for a very busy, high turnover diner that fits as many bodies as possible in one room. Not my favorite place in the world because of it being so crammed and loud, but obviously a good problem for them!

I have never been here and not been able to find a parking spot or waited longer than 5 minutes for a seat. If you think parking and the wait is bad on a weekend morning then you should drive down the road to Cracker Barrel. Food is above average. Prices are about right, not a bargain but not expensive either. A three egg omelet with home fries and toast is between 7 and 9 bucks. The hippie decor is kind of weird but makes this place unique. This is the best breakfast spot I've found in the area.

I'd give them 5 stars if the prices were a little lower but overall it's the best breakfast in town. You have to try the corn beef hash. It's the best I have ever had in my life

The food was good, so if that's all you care about, then this place is fine. My friend and I felt like going for breakfast Wednesday morning. She came in with a stroller and they told us to seat ourselves. We found a small table and put the stroller next to it, and we were greeted with "Normally we ask people to keep their strollers outside. I need room to walk by." So we found a booth where we were able to situate the stroller so it wasn't in anybody's way. Then, the owner/manager (not sure who she was) came by and told us, once again, that strollers are normally left outside and the only reason she'll let us stay with the stroller is because it's not busy. So my friend responded that her baby needs the stroller, so we can leave and take our business elsewhere if necessary. So then she responded with, "You can stay. There's no reason for attitude." Anyway, that started a bitter morning. The food was good, and the prices were fine, but the service left a bitter taste in our mouths. Also, the mug that my coffee came in was rather small, and I had to ask for more coffee rather than be offered it.

I lived in North Andover for 3 years, and I had never heard of Shawsheen Luncheonette until a couple of weeks before I moved. I went to eat breakfast there for the first time this morning and it was delightful. It is small but charming, and the staff we interacted with were very friendly. My companion and I both ordered omelettes, and we were both pleased with our meals. Prices are average, but you get more than enough food for your money.

This place gets pretty hyped up. ALWAYS crowded on weekends. It's pretty good, but not as awesome as people make it out to be. They cook everything right and pretty fast. Breakfast ends up being about $10/person after you get a drink. Very limited parking and space inside.

This place has a giant sign harping themselves as the best breakfast place around. Well, there is not enough seating, and barely any parking. Its scrunched inside and they have weird hippy stuff on the walls. Maybe if you grew up in Andover or something and you know everybody who works there, its more exciting. The food is mediocre for breakfast and expensive.

My husband and I eat here regularly. Everything we have had off the menu is delicious. The homemade soups are my favorite! There seems to be new specials on the board regularly. We have brought our families and friends here too and they have all had great food.

Right near my house.... we've been going there for years. This place is great for breakfast or lunch. They are closed on Mondays. The owner, Amy, is a doll, and all the waitresses remember how I drink my coffee, how I like my eggs and what I want to drink with my tuna club. Amy makes really good lobster and crabmeat rolls, and I am not a meatloaf fan, but my husband says the meatloaf sandwich is the best. The weekends are very crowded, but if you want to tie on a major feedbag on a Sunday morning, this is a great place to do it!
