The coffee here is so delicious, and no wonder, because they have their own roasting company in Hadley! My boyfriend and I buy their ground coffee for our own use, but that doesn't stop us from coming into the shop all the time. I'm also a fan of their raspberry oatmeal muffins, which are made in house. Only thing that knocks off a star from a 5-star rating is the fact that I have, on several occasions, gotten a latte that has a definite sour/burned taste to it. I've noticed that this happens when they're particularly busy, so I guess they aren't taking as much time to wipe down the machine. Great place to get a little homework done - if you can find a seat!

The following is a sad story.. I used to love Rao's Coffee. My first experience was in the Summer of 2009, just after they had completed renovations. The place was awesome. Whether the new owners liked this fact or not, it is known as "The Living-room of Amherst." The staff back then were extremely friendly, the individuals who came to the shop were eccentric and eclectic, and of course, the coffee was always decent. What kept me coming back to this shop day in and out though, had nothing to do with their coffee. That's what made Rao's special. The staff really made this place what it is, and unfortunately the owners, as in most businesses, didn't seem to think this matters much. As the owner began firing employees who had worked there for years, the atmosphere began to change, however I remained a loyal customer. My most recent experience though has put me into coffee exile. About a month ago I was sitting in Rao's and tried to purchase $4.80 worth of fare, when I was told by the new face behind the counter that a "credit card surcharge" was now in effect, and that I would be charged .50 more for my purchase if I decided to use my card. Upon noting that this practice in Massachusetts is illegal, and I did this very politely, my conversation was intercepted by one of the only faces I recognized in the shop. He essentially told me that it wasn't illegal, and that if I didn't like their practices to go somewhere else. Fair enough? The attitude of Rao's is now: fuck the customers, give us your money... I don't believe that's ever been an effective business model. I haven't been back since. I have been going to Cushman Market and other coffee shops in Amherst, and the funny thing is that while in "exile" I have seen other familiar faces of people who used to be Rao's regulars like myself. They have had similar experiences and have made the conscious consumer decision to avoid Rao's at all costs. If I were to rate the coffee and food at Rao's both back in 2009 and now, I would give it 3 stars. If I were to rate Rao's as a whole back in 2009, I would have given it 5 stars. The staff and friendliness is what kept me coming back. And now, you couldn't pay me to go back. I've already said my eulogy. Goodbye Rao's.

Love. their. coffee. If I happen to be in the area, I make sure to stop in for my skim latte and a lb of coffee beans. Not too sure about their food though. But then again, I haven't had any of it so couldn't comment.

Thanks Ben for introduced me to the coffe shop--The best coffee drink I had ever! I ordered a vanilla cafe au lait and it was tasty- not overly sweet but just sweet enough and the texture of the foam was so velvety! Because it is located in a college town, many students come to the coffee shop to study, so it is not a good place to meet friends or sit down to talk. However, if I'm ever in the area I will be sure to stop by and grab a cup of Joe--TO GO.

I decided to come to Rao's because I'm trying to finish my thesis after procrastinating all week. I arrived here a non coffee drinker functioning off two hours of sleep. I went up to the counter and told the really nice employee that I was looking for a tea that would wake me up. He recommended the English Breakfast tea... TALK ABOUT HIDDEN GEM! This English Breakfast tea was strong and amazing. As someone who refuses to try coffee I was very satisfied with the drink and the only thing I added was a hint of honey to take away a bit of the bitter taste. The drink was very reasonably priced (2 bucks!!!) and I will definitely come here more often to both study and grab tea. The space is really nice and there is enough background noise to force you to focus on what it is you're trying to do. :)

My first time to Rao's - solid coffeeshop, good prices, tasty decaf, nice variety of seating. But... the music. On a Wednesday night it's all bubblegum pop. Right now they're playing "As Long As You Love Me", which is the second Backstreet Boys song of the night. And the music is not quiet. Not to be a jerk, but there are a lot of good coffeeshops in this town, and if this station is playing on a second visit, it'll be a last visit.

The coffee is great, I visit every few months for a cup of coffee, a pastry, and a few pounds of coffee. The baristas are never particularly friendly, which is fine, but today was different. The barista was outright rude. I am polite, and never have an attitude, so there was absolutely no excuse for this behavior. For anyone doubting my account, my young adult children were with me and looked at me and said wow that was really uncalled for. It was not just me, it was very obvious. Time to take my business elsewhere.

This place is like a second home for me. Killer espresso, comfortable seating, pretty decent snacks if you're in there for multiple hours like I tend to be.

My friend took me to Rao's Coffee to get something warm to drink. I got the Cappuccino and I had to put in some sugar since the drink was bitter. I didn't order anything else but I saw that there were a few selections of pastries (i.e. brownies, cookies) and other food items. The place was full of college students when my friend and I arrived. But, the place was less crowded by the time we left.

I was a frequent visitor at Rao's back a couple years ago. It's nice to see they've made some renovations because it looks really nice now. It's your quintessential coffee shop: good drinks, free wi-fi, and always a bunch of people studying or conversing. Although I don't stay to get work done anymore, I still like stopping by. Coffee is pretty good, especially their iced drinks, and their conga bars are delicious. It's definitely fun to sit outside on a fall day drinking a coffee.

The coffee takes the edge off of those dreary winter days in Massachusetts. Now that I live in Seattle, a pound or so shipped out to me each month takes the edge off of the even drearier days in the Pacific Northwest. Nothing else in Seattle compares.

There comes a point when a place becomes not worth it. Rao's Coffee has hit this point. The coffee has a distinct, subtle sweet scent that is Rao's signature, and their beans are good, but it is way overpriced. It is impossible to go there everyday unless you have a brewed coffee, and I feel that they burn it and that it's not fresh often. Today's cup was bitter and had a weird sheen on the top that looked like some kind of oil. They take advantage of the people of Amherst because they are one of only three coffee places in town. And as if the prices weren't enough of a way to screw people, their servers have a major attitude problem, especially the tall, light brown haired young man who is present at closing usually. I came in once, not knowing the store was closed, and he made me aware of it in a very rude, nasty way. The place is always packed and ridiculously noisy. They blast the music; anyone who can work here clearly doesn't need to focus on what they're doing. I can't do my ear training or write a good paper here, let alone read a book. The hours don't cater to us customers at all. At closing the place is usually still full. Talk about being blind to the people's desires! Also, Rao's has regressed into a CHEAP place. They had the air conditioning off--on a 90 degree summer day! I was sweating in the store. I never thought I'd say this, but I'm fed up with Rao's! They think they can take their clientele for granted, and I won't be mistreated as a customer any longer! Support local? Not when a business is trying to stomp on its localS. Don't come here. But if you must, don't get the brewed coffee, and try not to interact with the rude servers.

Great cafe latte... pretty strong... crema is excellent. Super-friendly service The cookies are yummy! Only downside is that it's pretty crowded (depending on time you go) and feels a little crammed and slightly messy (don't get me wrong, it's clean just a gives off a messy feeling). Would def recommend trying!

Rao's coffee is one of those places where it is located right in the middle of a college town and all you see inside are students tapping away at their laptops or reading a textbook for a class(es). When we came after a hike, it was a very busy Saturday afternoon which also included alot of parents with students-to-be that are on tours of the campus. Luckily after ordering our food and coffee, someone right next to me was just about to leave and I was able to snag the table. Other less fortunate people were waiting across the room with contemptuous faces towards me but that's how the coffee bean bounces sometimes. The food was excellent and the Cappuccino that I had was excellent as well. I would go to Rao's to just take in the great aroma from the coffee and to just imagine that I was back in college again...

Oh Rao's. I have spent a good deal of my time and money there during grad school. Got the best ideas about my research, wrote the best parts of my thesis, and did the best job searches and interview preparation there. Ted.com has an interesting talk about how the best ideas are generated in Coffee Houses, and how the cafes played a crucial role in starting off the industrial revolution in England. Could not agree more. The crowd is a mix of Macsters, Amherst high schoolers, grad students and local artists. Occasionally, you will find a homeless guy or two inside as well. Can get pretty loud with all the coffee grinders and loud yelling by the baristas. The Ed's Study Aid is a caffeine bombshell and is not for the faint of heart.

  • Cris L.

The only reasons why Rao's doesn't deserve 5-stars: - Often very crowded, and sometimes impossible to find a seat - Coffee can be a bit pricey - Sometimes very loud Otherwise, the coffee and other drinks are delicious and the ambience is fun. Service is great and everyone seems very friendly. I often do work here while sipping an angry cow (steamed milk with flavoring) or munching on a sweet treat (vegan options available). Oh, and make sure to keep your parking meter full! I've gotten a ticket here by being over 1 minute on the meter (2 minutes after time expired, i arrived at my car with a ticket and meter-man nowhere to be seen). It's like they're ninjas...

  • Chris L.

Rao's has shorter lines, less expensive latte, more outlets for your electronics, and a homier ambiance than S-bucks. Why wouldn't I hang here?

    (4)
  • Zach B.

Rao's is 1 of the Amherst staples if you are from Amherst you know what I am talking about. I don't think there is a time I have been back home without stopping by, running into old friends, memories, coffee, yes yes! Also very appreciative that they distribute in Boston where I live now - whenever I get my hands on a bag, the aromas instantaneously transport me back to Amherst, amazing! Quality coffee makers.

    (5)
  • Whitney W.

Rao's is not a favorite of mine. Positives - Great music, good study spaces, convenient location, good service, free ice water in the back room. Negatives - Pricey and their drinks arn't very good. Rao's is an awesome place to hang out or study, but I rarely go there because I'd have to order a drink that isn't worth the price!

    (3)
  • Jason L.

It's surprising to see so many positive reviews of the coffee. While the espresso based drinks and food options are good, the drip coffee leaves much to be desired. As in don't over-roast the beans and make sure to clean out the brewing devices as they should be. We can all taste that.

    (2)
  • Jocelyn H.

I come to Rao's for the atmosphere and location. There is tons of available seating. It's right on the bus route. The coffee is excellent, though more expensive than I'd like, but how can you put a cost on quality? I haven't had much of their food, but I can say the almond biscotti is on point. Bring cash or be prepared to pay an extra $0.25 charge if your purchase is under $5.

  • Edmund J.

I love Rao's. I travel all the way from Springfield if I'm bored to work and study, though my college days are behind me, it gives me focus to be around so many focused minds. The music is often good, but lately they play too much of that beach music, and for hours and that's annoying. Clearly they are printing money with this business but that didn't stop them from doing away with their .50 cent refills and adding a .25 cent credit card charge to every purchase. Or is that .50 cents...I think I have heard both figures. To me that seems a little much for a business that keeps a full house. My 2 cents, I could be wrong...I have never owned a coffeeshop and have no idea what it costs...but in these hard times... The staff usually friendly and the coffee is always great.

Its really hard for me to describe this place for the Yelp audience. Lets just say, this was my first cafe I went to as a college student, I met my future wife there, and I proposed to my now wife there. Besides these emotional connections, this is one of the best hangout spots in Amherst. Good coffee, large space, welcoming people and workers. Students, professionals, and Amherst residents are always there. Loved the fact it has consistent hours and always open until 11 PM (I am a caffeine addict because of this place so I need coffee at 11 PM to function). So many great memories there, I hope everyone has great memories there.

  • Andrew J.

I enjoy this place and yet hate it at the same time. They are hardly running at the highest potential. That being said, they just went through a change in ownership and revamped the whole place. In some sense, it feels like it got neutered, having lost all its decor and distinct flavor. However, they now have much better baked goods (albeit extremely overpriced), and apparently the workers are treated slightly less like slaves. If you have ever wondered why service is brusque and civil at best, this is why. The espresso used to be crummy but its much better now. The coffee can vary, I generally find it to be too acidic, but its real coffee. At least they have ditched the crummy fake egg sandwiches. The space and outdoor seating is the best thing going for it. They attract all the weird townies, so the bathrooms are often burdened by the fecal matter of all the locals. Hardly attractive, and full of crazies. Nice place to have a chat over coffee, while saving yourself the pretense of being on an iBook at Amherst Coffee.

  • Siobhan H.

I've never understood the hype. People always rave about their coffee, but it always tastes burnt to me- and I've been there at many different times of day- it can't always be the end of the pot. Their teas are pretty good, and I like the Italian soda, but the place is over-priced and most of the staff are very short with customers. I don't expect someone to have a long conversation with me, but openly sighing and and eye-rolling when it takes 30 seconds longer to pull out my wallet than expected? Or when there's no one else behind me and I take a couple minutes to decide? No thank you Rao's.You can keep your crowded, burnt coffee, badly tempered and nasty rest roomed self.

Rao's basically has the best coffee I've ever laid lips on. This assessment is clearly shared by many locals, evidenced by the fact that the cafe brings all sorts of [weird] people out of the woodwork. Back when I was in college, I attempted (unsuccesfully) to study here a few times. This was pre-expansion into the old Indian restaurant next door, so maybe this is why people say that they study here now, but back then it was just way too packed and noisy for me. I always ended up back at the DuBois library, where it was actually quiet. I was also asked to leave several times for 'sitting too long'; they apparently wanted to make space for more recently-paying customers. They were also the only place in Amherst that required you to pay to use the restrooms, although I think they were told to stop doing that. These things are why they don't get 5 stars in my book, but like I said before, this was a long time ago, and maybe they've changed. But back to the coffee. Outstanding. They do the best Ethiopian Harrar I've ever tasted, and now that I live well outside the Pioneer Valley, I still order my beans from Rao's online. Well worth the trip if you're in the area, and you're looking for a fix.

  • Lydia M.

At Rao's, it's okay to bunker down with your laptop and just sit there for hours doing work and drinking coffee or tea. In fact it's more than okay, it's practically expected. The crowd can be obnoxious (and never go there on Sunday) but it's worth it just to have a place to do homework for hours that's not home or a campus. The only problem is that the people watching is so good, I never get all my work done.

  • Jenn X.

We went on a busy and cold Saturday. The coffee was ok, but the service was great given how busy it was. The price is a little high, but the service compensates for this.

  • Cait G.

It's Rao's, and that's about all that I can say. It has seen me through undergrad and now grad school, and it is seriously the best - moreover inexpensive - cup of coffee in Amherst. Their coffee and tea are fantastic. The only downside is that every hipster and proselytizing aging hippie in the Valley also recognizes Rao's for its greatness, so you have to deal with them as well. At the same time, it's a coffee shop, not a restaurant, so if you don't like the ambiance, then don't stick around. The coffee is worth it. Trust me.

OMG!! I used to work here in 2007... what a nice place now! it has been completely remodeled!! everything is good at this place... i loved working there. we were like a family and the barristers were great and friendly... i miss you guys at Rao's and will always love you.

Rao's is the best coffee shop in town. Great drinks and baked goods, friendly baristas, and great music on the radio (Beirut, Sufjan, Devotchka, Mumford & sons). Often busy, but lots of seats and strong internet. You'll see friends here.

    (5)

Rao's Coffee offers free internet service and it's right at downtown Amherst. Awesome coffee shop to hang out besides Black Sheep Coffee. I quit coffee a while ago, but I heard people love their coffee.

used to come here while at university before i really started to appreciate the art of coffee, and independent coffee roasters. rao's roasts their beans in small batches everyday, and their numerous concoctions apart from the standards prove that sometimes, it's okay to stray from the traditional americano. besides their delicious coffee, they also offer a variety of baked goods that compliment your beverage in the best possible way. they had this fruit tart with a granola crust that blew my mind. the only downside is that they can be extremely busy, with seats filling up all the time, 'though i'm sure they don't mind that :) if only i were closer than 4 hours away...

    (4)
  • Robin G.

Some of the best coffee I've ever had but not a fan of the food, plus it can get ridiculously busy if you plan to stay there for any length of time. I love it though, I go there whenever I get the chance.

What a change! The new owner has really spruced the place up. I'm all for a coffee houe that let's you camp and work on your computer, but that doens't mean the bathrooms have to be a discrace. The new owners really have cleaned the place up. You still have the same great coffee, but it's just.... nicer. I like the new paint colors too, it's so cozy when you walk in. Kind of like a "Cheers" of coffee joints.

Vanilla soy latte? Milky simple syrup. Ok, I'll be that girl and order a new drink, a regular soy latte, which I'm fully prepared to pay for. I've been in their shoes, I've dealt with these customers. So, medium soy latte? Milk with something along the edges of the tongue...could it be...caffeine? No, too fleeting, too weak, with absolutely no foam and a lingering Sour taste (burned beans, badly cleaned machine or frother). Coffee, especially in the form of espresso drinks, raises up on its hind legs and gallops across the palate and consciousness. A latte, done well, should in physical terms be somewhat close to: eye Pop with eyelids shifting up and sliding back into eye sockets but eyebrows stable, lids then relaxing while the corners of the mouth turn towards the ears and shoulders drop, relaxed, alert, satiated. Not at Rao's! Also, they do not treat many of their workers well, and they're dominating all other local coffee roasters and businesses. I'm also distrustful of their bean acquisition.

This is an amazing place to go if you need to get your study on with something hot and delicious. The tea and coffee are amazing, fresh, and clearly the people making it know what they're doing. Its got a great atmosphere, especially just to relax and read and listen to great music. If you're in the area, you have to stop at Rao's for a cup of coffee. Its a must.

    (5)
  • Aviva S.

The tea selection here is great, and I'm a fan of the oatmeal cookies - but it's always pretty busy, and while I appreciate area students like hanging here to study - they really camp out at the tables with 1 person easily taking up a table for 4, and looking really put out when you ask to share the space for the amount of time it takes to drink a cup of tea.

A great local coffee place that unfortunately gets way too crowded with loud self-involved college kids. The coffee is quite good, and thankfully lacks that "I taste like BURNING!" flavor that the majority of coffee in this country seems to have. As Michael K says, this place is saved by having very pleasant outdoor seating so if you find the interior vibe crowded and annoying you can pop outside where it's a bit quieter and perfect for people-watching. But you can, as many people do, just grab and go. Amherst is great for walking and the town green is a great place to sit and sip.

  • Chris M.

Cool! I remember this place from when I was a student at UMASS Amherst back in '92. I thought it closed but it just moved to a new location. Love those cannolis! Good coffee too, but who needs coffee when you have cannolis!

    (5)
  • Michael K.

Rao's, How do I feel about you? Ambivalent is the answer you're looking for. The coffee is decent, yes, but some of your staff seem very over-worked and elitist. When it isn't crowded, which is almost never, the atmosphere can be very nice. The saving grace is your outdoor seating in that little courtyard back from the street. It's very pleasant to sit out there and sip your well-roasted coffee with a friend or a date and soak up some warm Amherst rays. But those UMass and Amherst College kids could really annoy the pants off a person sometimes. Free Wi-Fi, though, so that's a plus. Anyway, I'll stop by when I'm just meeting someone to chat, but when I want to relax and sip some coffee for a while, I'll just go to Amherst Coffee. Benefriends? -M.

If you're in Amherst and don't make a stop in at Rao's, you're a bit of a thickie. The place is always jam-packed with Amherst College froshies trying to look smart while checking Facebook on their Apple laptop, so you have to be really patient to get a table, especially when the weather's cold. This is an excellent place to meet people for almost any purpose -- everybody knows where it is, how to get there, and the atmosphere is always lively. The coffee is quite good, providing a solid cuppa (or mulled cider or hot choloate or latte) at quite a reasonable price. Their baked goods are also excellent, and they have biscotti so hey, props on that. It's a local-owned place with its own beans so that goes over really well with the Valley clientele. Don't bother trying to park in that tiny little lot in front of the place, you won't get a spot. Just take the bus or walk. And remember, you bus your own tables.

They serve coffee from beans they roast. They also sell tonics for what ails you made of tea mixes They also have the obligatory cakes, cookies, and excellent (but expensive) granola. I made it through a blistering summer research internship in a building without air conditioning by drinking a concoction made of 4 shots of espresso in a mug of coffee....it's called something like the boilermaker...You will awaken and stay that way for 8 hours after drinking it no matter what. They have more than the usual amount of indoor and outdoor seating and some clean restrooms. "For Amherst" they've got parking... they have metered parking out front and nearby!

I can't imagine that a cappuccino this bad could be a fluke. I've had better from 7/11 at 1 in the morning. I was disappointed and threw it away after sipping a third of it.

  • Vilay S.

I don't get the hype. The coffee isn't that good, people loiter for hours taking advantage of the wireless, everyone is squished together, and there always seems to be screaming kids allowed to run around loose. I've also heard from former employees that the owner treats the workers like crap. On the other hand, it was the only place to go to until Amherst Coffee opened.

You know, I really like Rao's. I spend a lot of time getting work done and studying there, and the atmosphere is really great for it - just the right amount of background noise with just the right lighting. The service there is always great, and the baristas are more than friendly. I've had espresso there, and I'll be honest, it wasn't the best I've had. I ordered a cappuccino there and it was given to me with the foam pouring out into the saucer, a little bit burned around the cup. I've gotten okay cappuccinos there too, but not since my very sloppy one. But I forgive them because their mistake forced me to try just their plain old drip coffee. Drink it black - it's the best 'cowboy coffee' you'll have in the area. I've also tried a number of baked goods at Rao's and they've all been fantastic. It's a great little cafe, nestled a little bit off of the beaten path in downtown Amherst, and I like it for just what it is. I'll definitely keep going back again and again for the great service, the great coffee, and the great atmosphere.

I never would have made it through school without Rao's Ethiopian Yrgacheffe coffee and a cinnamon roll for snack. I used to hang out here so often I should have had a reserved table. I still think about Rao's, and remember watching them roast the coffee over in the corner. Also, there used to be several very cute guys behind the counter.

This is my place to go when I need to get some work done. They have excellent coffee, au lait, and chai. The pasties are not bad either. The place itself has some shitty tables, but you can sit outside which is always a plus on a nice day. The servers are kind of bourgie, 'cause they know oh-so-much about the millions of ways that coffee and drinks can be made. In fact, it gives them the excuse to act a little rude... but hey, at least they don't fuck up my vanilla au lait.

I have always liked stopping at Rao's in the summer on a bike ride. We sit outside and drink our "frozen yuppie coffee drinks" as we call them. Good place to watch people go in/out/by/around. A perfect place between Northampton and Leverett and back.

i have a really warm place for rao's. i like it because it's a coffee shop you can usually get your work done. most kids from hampshire go to the haymarket and it is just impossible there. there are a lot of amherst, and umass kids who go to this place, and it makes it so easy to concentrate. i like the setting because it's not too bohemian or anything, but just comfy enough to get your work done. pretty good tea selection also. i am mostly fancy about this place because of all the work i can get done, and drink my tea at the same time without being disturbed!

This was a favorite hangout of mine while I was at UMass. It's a great place to bring a laptop and do work with some coffee for a day, or to just grab a book and sit outside reading. Students and teachers will often run into each other here. The atmosphere is cool and relaxed, and the staff is extremely friendly. A staple of Amherst life.

rao's had the best vanilla au laits! there was always a wonderfully rich coffee aroma coming from that massive coffee bean roaster (?) w/ piles of coffee bean bags stacked up all along the walls of the cafe. haven't been there in a while, but 60% of my dinky college paycheck went to this place every week.

This was one of my study locations back in college. Its a busy coffee shop but the atmosphere is very friendly and just totally relaxing. I went back there recently and saw that they have expanded and added Wifi! Even with all the changes, it still has the same vibe

Is it more expensive than your typical cup o' Joe at Dunkin? Yes. However, it is also far more delicious and it is also fair trade- in my eyes, that's worth the extra money. I love coming to Raos as a pick-me-up, especially when the students from the 5 college area are gone. The coffee gives you a caffeine buzz like no other. I contribute this to the ethical fair trade values. It's delicious. There are usually a bunch of people on laptops here. In all honesty, who can blame them? It's a great environment, with free wifi, and an endless supply of coffee. When I need to get my work done, it's where I go.

Atmosphere is great, staff is friendly enough, cappuccino was below average. That said, if I were a hungover college student this would be my place of choice.

Let me start off by saying Rao's is the bomb. I spent practically every day here for about 4 months while I scoured the online job boards in search of work. The coffee was always delicious and the environment is so low key and relaxing during the spring and summer, perfect for someone needing some peace for concentration. Price wise id say it's on par to various other coffee shops both corporate and local but the product is above and beyond. The only complaint I ever had was that several electrical outlets didn't work which was inconvenient when spending several hours working on a laptop. But again, free wifi and great coffee in an awesome environment was worth the minor annoyance of having to find another outlet. I can't wait to come back!

The best coffee shop in Amherst for over 20 years.... The menus been the same forever, and why should it have to change... Forget Starbucks, buy local...

Came here on the word of yelpers and was so glad I did. Located in just the sort of brick walled, wood floored, kind of establishment that one (born and raised across the country, on the west coast) imagines as quintessentially Massachusetts. My mocha was latte art adorned. My espresso was dark as death and strong as Atlas. My barista was just the right combination of unaffected friendliness and speedy efficiency. In other words: spot on. The real star of the show, though, was the chocolate canoli I ordered. Ice cold, dark chocolate draped, chocolate chip sprinkled, and cream filled magnificence. It's big enough to share--but don't. Make them get their own. Chocolate + canoli = every man, woman, and child for themselves (everybody knows that). Plus, they have Emily Dickinson painted on the wall (it is Amherst, after all) Get to it!

I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but they have wonderful teas! Multiple kinds of hot and iced tea, and some very nice herbal teas. A nice place to do work. Friendly staff, a local and student favorite.

Best cafe in Amherst with the WORST WIFI in in town. If you want to sit outside on your laptop or phone don't bother because the signal is weak and inconsistent at best. There are no outlets outside either which is ABSOLUTELY MIND BOGGLING. Hopefully, the post will wake the owner up.

I have been a loyal customer of Rao's Coffee for 15+ years, but today that relationship ended. $16 for 1 pound of whole bean Sumatra?!!! With a "free" cup of hot coffee (in 80 degree weather) but if I skipped that cup they were still going to charge me $16 for something that would only cost me about $10 at Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters that would also be local/fair trade and wouldn't come with attitude from a barista ...Sorry guys, but that's an INSANE amount of money to charge for that. You seem to have gotten too big for your britches...I'm out

One of the best coffee places in the area. A big college kid hang out. Prices are a bit better than Esselon and it has a lot of tables. Parking is metered and in short supply. Off the main drag but far better than the McStarbucks up there.

Good coffee. Fast service but there are so many laptop zombies here. We had no chance of finding 2 empty seats... We would've liked to hangout and chat a bit... We will try again. Maybe summer will be a better choice.

Great coffee and a pretty wide selection of offerings. This place runs very efficiently: you order, you pay and you get your coffee in one fell swoop without much of a wait. This place is pretty big but completely filled with college kids. There is convenient meter parking right in front, large tables to fit a laptop if needed and plenty of seating. Try a pastry, they are awesome, especially the coffee cake. Definitely a fan, for sure will return.

My favorite coffee shop in the Amherst area - hands down great beverages every time. This past weekend I decided to try out a latte with a touch of coconut syrup - this may be my new favorite! Very balanced latte, and not too sweet - just how I like it! The atmosphere is cozy and quiet, but buzzing with students and professors putting in long hours on assignments. Come here on a Sunday and you can barely find a seat!

This place became my second home while in college at Umass. Wide variety of seating choices, consistently delicious coffee and snacks, and long hours. And free wi-fi, and plenty of electrical outlets, and 4 bathrooms. I'd live here. 2nd best mocha latte in Amherst.

I'm just really glad that they have really good coffee, wifi, and outlets to charge your stuff. I despise coffee shops that don't put outlets to make people with out a laptop with good batter life get out of the shop (non Mac users).

Hands down the best coffee roasters in western mass, no gimmicks just quality. The cafe is ok, when it's not too crowded, but I'll go out of my way to get Raos coffee beans to bring home.

Stopped by while visiting colleges - decided to go local rather than the chain up the street. The place was packed with students - wall to wall Macs. The coffee was very good but what put the place over the top was the pumpkin whoopie pie. My god it was the size of a hamburger - two pumpkin buns around a creamy filling. Before coming here I would have said that Verrill farm in Concord, MA has hands down the best pumpkin whoppie pies - but this was right up there and bigger...guess I do like my whoopie pies.

I spend far too much time at Rao's. This is the coffee shop where I write all of my fifteen page papers or read about essays by Joan Rivere. They have free wifi, friendly baristas and decently priced coffee. Out of all the Rao's in the area this is definitely the best one.

Best cafe in Western Massachusetts! I first went to Rao's as a student at a summer program at Amherst College 15 years ago and have enjoyed coming back ever since. My husband and I met here and he proposed to me several years later at Rao's as well. Of course the coffee is great but I like the atmosphere best. There's always plenty of tables available since they renovated several years ago. It has a great social atmosphere but it can also be a good place to curl up with a book or study. My only wish is that they had a few more non-coffee drinks available.

A single shot cappuccino costs $4.25. This caught me by surprise and is higher than other local cafes. It was bitter and the foam was like over beaten egg white. I also much prefer Esselon's coffee beans to Rao's

Rao's has a special place in my heart and always will- I've been coming through since I was a high school student, drinking mochas and pretending to be emo... My friends and I would spend hours in the formerly gritty, now redone and expanded space. This is my favorite spot in town to go with a book or a friend, to sit in a sun drenched corner and spend a few hours sipping on exceptional coffee. Do check it out!

Rich and smooth cafe latte, lots of space to sit and chat or study but still manages to create a cozy and warm atmosphere with plenty of light. Loved the artwork. Maybe it's because it is down the street from Emily Dickinson's museum, maybe it's because of all the students hunched intently over their Macbooks, but I felt a sudden need to join the intelligentsia and, like, write my first novel here.

Cute local place with great coffee and atmosphere. Very busy on a Saturday afternoon, filled with students and locals alike and it's no wonder why - yummy coffee, cute tables and delectables pastries. Am I being too hipster for picking this place over any Starbucks?

(4.5) This is my third year in the area and I have no idea how I've managed to skip this place until now. Their latte is good, the baristas are nice; there's free wifi that doesn't disconnect every two seconds and an abundance of outlets. I had a mocha the second time, which was risky because Area Four has spoiled my palate when it comes to mocha, but I liked it here! I just wish they had some rewards program (maybe I just don't know about it) because that is the only reason I still go to Starbucks with all the awesome coffee shops in the area...

We went here based on how many people were in the coffee shop and whoa we were not disappointed. We had skim lattes so I can only speak to the coffee...it was a better latte than we had just had in NYC. The barista obviously knew what she was doing. Smooth and didn't need sugar.

Terrible service. They act entitled for some unknown reason. Everyone knows the best coffee shop around these parts is Amherst coffee. Fix your service Rao's!

Nice coffee house in Amherst. I had the carrot cake muffin with cream cheese frosting. I thought I'd give it a try since it looked so pretty....and I mean the carrot cake. It was moist, soft and scrumptious. I would eat another again anytime. My partner had a coffee and the chocolate chip pumpkin biscuit. It looked and smelled inviting, he offered me a piece of the biscuit, but I knew I couldn't just have a bite so I opted out. I'll go back for one of my own in the future. The atmosphere was ok. The coffee house wasn't colorful and inviting. It was a bit yuppish. I would have thought it would have an air of culture and spice due to its downtown location. It was pleasant to hear in ear shot Portuguese being spoken behind us which was a nice surprise. I want to go back and check out other tasty treats. I found it to be overall ok and comfortable....and I mean the place!

Rao's might just have the best coffee in the Pioneer Valley. Delicious latte, and fresh local whipped cream on the mochas making for a wonderful drinking experience. Great place to study - lots of plugs and if you don't get one at first space opens up right away. Great quality coffee and a nice space.

Best coffee ever and incredible gluten free goodies! Stopped in with the family while visiting a friend at UMass. Raos is clean, funky, well run by awesome baristas, and serves a great cup of joe. My daughters and I enjoyed the gluten free blueberry muffins and a huge hunk of gluten free banana bread without worrying about cross-contamination. Looking forward to visiting again soon.

Good coffee and plenty of indoor & outdoor seating. They have free WiFi which is another plus. The place was pretty packed when we went, but other than 2 college girls loudly sharing their life stories, it was pretty quiet/peaceful. The barista was funny & friendly and they had a great menu. We also bought their beans at Whole Foods and have been enjoying their coffee brewed at home.

Love this place. Nice selection of drinks, good music, awesome people. The only downside is sometimes it's hard to find a seat during popular hours. Must try the giant cookies, especially the oatmeal one.

I come here way too often. However this is best iced latte ($4) i've had between amherst and noho. (starbucks are professionals at screwing this up) They cold brew their iced coffee which is great ($3) but easy enough at home. The muffins and cookies are always excellent, I've had the GF blueberry muffin ($2.67)several times. I also recommend Pumpkin choc walnut or chocolate chip cookie.

I have never had a prettier coffee! I didn't even want to drink it. I started my morning with a delicious latte from Rao's and it was not only delicious, but so pretty with the leaf pattern in the foam on the top. I took a picture (they probably thought I was nuts!). It was reasonably priced and delicious. I would definitely visit again if in the area.

I wasn't wowed by anything here. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I know their roasts are pretty popular. It was a nice atmosphere and they had lots of pastries and typical hot beverages. My chai was decent, although overpriced and the service was nothing to write home about. I would go back and try something else.

I don't know about many other independent coffee houses in Amherst, and I don't need to know. I've known about Rao's ever since I was a kid, and when I became old enough to appreciate it, I went there as often as I could. They have changed so much since the beginning, when their shop was smaller, and they didn't have a private roasting house in Hadley. They roast their own beans, and distribute them regionally, which is so nice, but the experience is home in Amherst center. They have a rustic decor inside their shop that smells like good coffee, and the buzz of machinery behind the counter blends perfectly with the buzz of customers' eclectic conversation. Their espresso drinks are great. When I was in my "cafe mocha" phase, I would only buy them there. You're buying quality for a little extra per cup compared to mainstream shops, but believe me it's worth it. You're getting a one-of-a-kind product and experience here. Don't feel intimidated by the liberal crowd that hangs out in there. You're there for good coffee, or else you'd go somewhere else. Hang out outside when the weather is warm, and feel like a part of the town.

Went here in an attempt to satisfy my craving for an espresso and a croissant, and I came back disappointed on both counts. For a place that gets such high praise for its coffee, their espresso was incredibly acidic and bordering on the undrinkable. The croissant wasn't very good either, lacking the light, crispy flakiness that a croissant is supposed to have. I won't blame all of that on Rao's, as croissants are frequently misinterpreted in the US, but it's sort of sad that Trader Joe's bake-off croissants are noticeably better than these. Next time, I'll stay home and brew myself some coffee in my stove top moka pot, and have some TJ croissants to go with it--it'll be cheaper and infinitely better. Also, I'm not sure if I should add or subtract points for the hobo crawling through the place (crawling, yes--you read that right), but it definitely makes for a unique experience...
