To cut right to the chase...a meal at the Federal is not a trip to a nice restaurant...it is a special night out to be experienced before you die. A classic tradition in Western Mass with amazing food, a beautiful building, and staff that will make sure that you are 100% satisfied and smiling by the time you leave the building. It doesn't get better than this!

It was our first time here and both my fiance and I were pleasantly surprised. Everything on the menu was mouth watering. The wine list was extensive. We ordered the Osso Bucco and the surf and turf. The food was amazing, my one negative was that it took a long time to be served. However, everything is made to order, so a bit of a wait is understandable.

I've have always been impressed with the food at The Federal. I even had my wedding reception in this building and the service was impeccable. All of the centerpieces I had sent up were laid out, the lights were dimmed just enough to be romantic, and the cake was center stage along the wall. The food, again, was amazing and my family and friends all cleaned their plates. I can't wait to go back!

First time going but will definitely be back! The food was amazing. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. The food is pricey but worth every penny. Portions may appear small but are actually very filling, My boyfriend even had to take some home. The Risotto Balls are great and the free cotton candy is really good (because they actually flavor it- for us it was banana). The Dog Treats are also amazing my Dog loved them. Very high quality overall.

I'm going to start this review talking about the service. Notice it's a 5 star? If this place served dog food, I think I would have given it 5 stars on service alone. NOT many places would I say this about! I'm in a service oriented business... and when you can hire and train a staff of people to make them seem as ONE service team making sure that your experience is perfect? THAT'S what I'm tall king about. Whoever is responsible for this knows what they are doing - congratulations! Our server, Heidi, was absolutely the best server I have ever experienced. Really... she is a super star. That goes for the other members of the team as well. These folks should open another business for training restaurant employees. i could give you many references for potential clients! Now... the food. They started out with complementary risotto balls - at least they were free tonight - I'm not sure if they do this every night. Two of us had the fried clam chowder - WHAT?- yes... fried clam chowder. It's hard to explain, but it was amazing... I know I can't do it Justice in writing... but they had clams, fried oysters and all kinds of goodness into this chowder... of course... topped with a wonderful piece of bacon. mmmmmmy goodness... it was delicious! Salads were wonderful. I had the Cod Fish on a bed of lobster and other "things" - I'm not sure what it all was, but it was great. The rack of lamb was very good as well. The Federal does it right. I am already looking forward to my next trip back. I'm sure it won't be too long from now.

Very high prices, small portions, wierd haunted house atmospere, unprofessional staff..........Great place for the pretentious people of the area that want to let everyone know how sophisticated they are by dropping big bucks for less than avaergae food.

I am a huge fan of the food and drinks at The Federal. The service is the only thing i find lacking on every visit. We've only sat in the dining room once, and the rest of our visits were in the lounge. The service is lacking, and you rarely have the same server from beginning to end, which would be fine if they knew what was going on, but on almost every occasion they have forgotten my app, or my drink, or just never come by. The worst occasion, and the reason i've sat down to write a review, is because of one server in particular. I believe it was a Thursday night, we sat in the lounge. I went out for a smoke and saw a waitress leaning over the railing of the handicapped ramp. I went to smile at her when she wretched and went running behind the bushes. I then could continue to hear her vomiting so i quickly put out my cigarette and went back inside. She returned right after me, i'm hoping she stopped somewhere to wash her hands but i didn't see it. Then she grabbed plates of food and continued on her shift. Another waitress stopped her and told her she looked horrible. It was disgusting. Not only did it ruin my appetite, but I can't look at her the same every time i go back. I mean who does that?! There has to be a back door and a dumpster you could go puke behind. My husband and i go here as an extravagance on the rare occasion we celebrate something or feel we owe it to ourselves. We left that night $150 poorer and I was so grossed out we didn't go back for months. I hope you read this, and i really hope you washed your hands.

The Federal. Considering you'll pass establishments like "Mr. Rooter" and "Food Bag" en route, it gets extra credit just for existing. First impressions were mixed. The exterior looks more like a funeral home than a place to dine. The bar area (think crab shack wood paneling, mirrored walls straight from an RV and uncle Rocko's carpet) was full to the brim on a Friday night. Some poor chap was crammed in the corner, crooning Cat Stevens covers and vying for enough elbow room to strum his guitar. The takeaway here: Make a reservation. Once seated - safe from musical harm and swampy atmosphere - the good stuff started. Our waitress was smart, informed and helpful. She never hovered. She did recommend what turned out to be a weak cocktail. (Skip the raspberry lemonade. The Bellini, however, is terrific.) Their signature risotto balls are served over fresh ricotta as an amuse-bouche - a delicious surprise. The menu is inventive and ambitious. They seem to be trying to appeal to both "foodies" and the steak and potato crowd, particularly in the entree department. For the former, they provide curious combinations like seared tuna au poivre served over Asian-inspired noodles with sesame cucumber salad and...fried oysters? Sold me. For the latter, they offer a "you be the chef" list of mains and sides you can combine as you like. There is a peculiar employment of mashed potatoes as fixative in several dishes, including the Rhode Island-style calamari which came with another curious but not unwelcome compliment...chick peas. The dessert menu is clever. In addition to a good "eat in" selection, they offer "take home" packs of their house-made cotton candy, toffee and even dog biscuits for the poor pooch who wasn't invited. There is a decent selection of after dinner drinks, dessert wines and scotch. We had a good if not pricey experience here. In general, the house approach to achieving flavor is to man-handle rather than caress; what's served is more "bam!" than "come hither". But there's a time and a place for that. Given the options in the area? Bam! Go for it.

Can't go wrong here. Servers are great,Some of the best food I have ever had. The dishes are always so creative yet familiar. Never had anything here that wasn't AMAZING!!

Out of this world! The service was top notch and we were seated in a small area instead of the main dining room which made the dining experience more intimate. My boyfriends family and I started with the classic pizza and stuffed figs. I felt funny eating pizza for an app but it was light enough and out of this world! We also received the standard stuffed risotto ball which was to die for! I ordered the truffled Mac and cheese with breaded grilled shrimp. They did a wonderful job reinventing this classic comfort food. I brought more then half home and it tasted even better after sitting for a while. I cannot wait to go back and try the Tuna!

Awesome experience...we both commented that everything was wonderful from the home baked ciabatta bread to the blood orange cocktails...wow! Harpooned swordfish was flawless, pepperoni pesto pizza was outstanding. My only disappointment is that we were to full for dessert. I would highly recommend this place.

One of the hardest parts of moving to New Jersey last week was leaving behind our favorite restaurant. We went to the Federal a handful of times while living in East Windsor and made the ~20 minute drive over the start boarder for the best occasions -- anniversary, Valentine's Day, my birthday, our late date night in the area, etc. Only once did a meal disappoint, and even then it didn't run us off. That one time, a large party was in one of the rooms with a buffet set up. Our meals were good and edible, but didn't seem to have the same attention has other trips. That time aside, everything else was always great. We generally ordered off the night's "additions" menu, either an app or an entre. From salmon, to scallops, to steak to short ribs to the pork chop, everything is great. It's hard to pick wrong at the Federal. The kitchen staff really knows what they are doing. On the apps menu, the risotto balls are excellent. A bucket is great, but little mentioned secrete is complimentary (one per person) are sent out, so if you are just looking for a taste, the bucket isn't necessary! The apps and salads are all very seasonal, especially on the additions menu. Most recently, we had the stuffed figs and the tomato stack -- both excellent. The desserts are also great. I highly recommend the pot brownie. It's mostly a light chocolate moose with brownie chunks and berries, served in a ceramic pot. So good! The cocktails are also a much. The specials are great, but even classics are solid pours. If we ever make it back up north, we will be back!

For a restaurant in the middle of no where (residential neighborhood), The Federal certainly is a great experience. The sister restaurant of Vinted wine bar in West Hartford Connecticut's Blue Back Square, The Federal provides a large variety of foods ranging from steaks to seafood. I took the lady here for a nice dinner. We had shrimp, lobster, scallops, and throw the sirloin in there too. Great wine list and bar. Food is well made and prepared to your liking. I can easily go on and on about the food but take my word for it and give it a try! The always complete your meal with in house cotton candy! Wait staff are quick and very knowledgeable. I just wish they would write their specials on a paper rather than telling you because who the heck has time to listen and make any sense of what they're saying when you're 1 starving like a malnourished child or 2 drunk like a white girl. The atmosphere is great and certainly dressy. Unfortunately we did not plan in advance and came here last minute dressed like we just left the hoods of Springfield. It is strange because there is always a very cold draft flowing through the building. It is in an old house which was converted to the restaurant. In my opinion, it was probably an old funeral home.

The Federal is a great place to dine out if you are looking for high quality, delicious food. The menu is filled with creative and flavorful options - you can't go wrong! Dessert is a must-have... the PB & J dessert was spectacular! The service is on par as well; our waitress was very knowledgeable about the food, attentive to our table and accommodated to our every need. I definitely suggest giving this restaurant a try!

My husband & I went to The Federal for our anniversary dinner Saturday night with hopes of a romantic dinner. The table in a back room was dark and noisy with little kids at 9:15 so it was very hard to talk or hear my husband . Appetizers came before drinks but the "bucket of balls" we're very good. The amount of food for the price you pay is not worth it The staff was great & the GM concerned but we will only go back for apps.

Amazing scallops. Amazing fish. Amazing steak. The menu is not the most creative or cutting edge but sometimes it is just better to take the classic and really execute the crap out of it, you know? I mean just kill it. Best Food. Best service. Classy ambience in a really old candlelit house. Bring a hot date and wear something snazzy and be sure to keep the pinky up.

I do take what my buddy, Max H., says to heart, especially when it comes to awesome food. But I decided to challenge his bad review and try this gem out. I had bookmarked this place when I moved out here and was determined to check it out for myself. I booked a date for my fiancé and I through the open table link they had on yelp. I told them it was my anniversary in the note section. An email was sent to me to confirm the reservation. Quick, easy, and no phone calls had to be made. Love it. My fiancé and I don't get out much, since we have a young child. So we decided to snazz it up. We arrived about 15 min. early. I gave the hostess my name and she said "happy anniversary." How sweet is that? Talk about making it personal! I was also immediately seated. Score! That was where the chemistry for us began. Nicole K. was our waitress. Talk about being awesome! She was on her 'A' game. She gave fantastic recommendations, was really knowledgable about all the menu items, and was extremely attentive. I wish every waitress I had was like her! Everything from the appetizer to the dessert was perfect. The dishes were beautifully made with a handsome amount of food. The cocktails made you thirst for more! My fiancé was amazed at how quick his cup of water was getting refilled, he joked about someone spying on us to ensure it never passed the halfway mark. I ordered a plate with lobster and was amazed at the amount of lobster meat there was on there. They don't mess around here! This was the perfect place for us to celebrate another wonderful year together. Thank you for being such a great restaurant. This is totally not what I expected after I read my friend's review. I personally told him that I honestly disagreed with his review. Maybe things have changed, or maybe it's always been mind-blowing!!! I will come again... If I can get a babysitter, lol. If you haven't tried this place, you are totally missing out!

I suggested this place to my friends because I had read a lot of really great reviews about it. We decided to give it a try and I'm glad we did. The food was great, the service was really great. Our server Sarah was very professional and extremely knowledgeable about the menu. It was my first time trying foie gras which was delicious. I ordered the short rib carbonara for my entree, the short rib could have used some more flavor but it was a very creative tasty dish overall. I tried 3 different desserts but the fried banana split was my favorite. Some of the dishes are quite expensive so go with an open mind to try new things.

My wife and I decided to try this place out for New Year's based on the reviews. It's hard to believe that this place exists in Agawam which isn't exactly a 'food' mecca. By the time we arrived for our late evening reservation the place was packed with people. We were seated immediately in a nicely appointed room with a few other tables in it. The place was nicely decorated for the holidays, with gold and silver balloons in the bar area. They had a few special items on the menu, but you could order anything off the rest of the normal menu. We had the 'basket of balls' as an appetizer, and as others have said they taste great. My wife was one of the last few folks to get the lobster special, and I had the veal chop which was cooked perfectly. The greens were a little 'soupy' that the chop was served with and not particularly tasty. The salad specials were good, but nothing to write home about. I was glad to see that there was not yet another Kale salad special. Overall, a great experience with very good food. I wouldn't eat here frequently as we weren't blown away, but I could see going on special occasions.

Now if you come up this street to this restaurant don't be surprised if you seem to be amazed by what this place has to offer. On the outsets it doesn't seem much but come in & if you hit the bar you'll find a good spot whether the bar or the area of that & if you go into the dining area again you'll be very impressed. Atmosphere is very relaxing 7 music is set with Satellite Radio & when I was there had jazz covers of various tracks of today, '90's & even '60's but the music sits well & is all smooth as silk. Appetizers & entrees are very superb & get you good & to boot after you've ordered you get a risotto ball which is damn good. Prices are not bad deeming everything I mentioned & this would be a place that'll do really good if you even need an idea for a graduation for a loved one from say either high school/college. This is Agawam's best kept secret.

Still can not believe a restaurant of this caliber is in Agawam Massachusetts. The service was attentive and polite, the food was creative and flavorful. Foie gras app yum, cockle and smoked haddock chowder yum, diver scallop and skirt steak yum and butter grilled lobster yum. Very nice touch with the risotto ball amuse and cotton candy..

Great place. The clam chowder was our favorite. Steak was a bit too much on the done side but has alot of flavor. The tuna was great and done perfectly. Great cocktails worthy of any bar. The Beignet was disappointing. More like a sweet hushpuppy than a Beignet but don't let that stop you. The place is a great restaurant and we'll go back soon.

The Federal is almost an oxymoron... nice ambiance & decor but casual with all the diners dressed in jeans .... great presentation of food but non-upscale word choice on the menu... it's odd but i guess it works for them! the pastas come in half portions which was definitely more than enough for our stomachs after the appetizers & complimentary starters! --complimentary bread basket --amuse bouche: a risotto ball on a spoonful of truffled mashed potatoes... pretty tasty! i wish they gave us this before we ordered the "bucket of balls" ---"bucket of balls": essentially arancini.. not a fan of the bucket since the risotto balls are thrown on top of mashed potatoes and get soggy ---hearts of romaine caesar salad: a bit lemony but still good & the parmesan crostini was to die for! ---"pasta & meatballs": it came w/ a tomato sauce instead of a pesto sauce as stated in the menu.. not bad! ---truffled "mac & cheese": we ordered this w/ short ribs on top.. the mac was nice & cheesy and the ribs were tender ---complimentary cotton candy: a playful touch to the end of the meal! I'm not inclined to go back.. but i think its a great escape from the lack of good food in the area! NOTE: last seating was at 8:30PM on a friday night since the kitchen closes! & the restaurant is located in a little neighborhood street & looks like it used to be someone's house

A five star restaurant in Agawam Mass? Hard to believe. Best meal I've had in western Mass recently. That includes such stalwarts as Blue Heron and Hope & Olive. We (15 of us) were all crowing about the experience. My brace of quail was the best quail I've ever experienced. Beautifully conceived executed and presented. Other raves around the table for the steak, the brined pork, and for the gigantic utterly fresh scallops. The service was spot on and everything about The Federal was memorable. Good choice of wine by the glass too. Agawam? Springfield? Certainly worth the trip from the north as it is far and away better than anything Northampton or Amherst can offer.

Easily the best restaurant in the area, plain and simple. Ambience and quality go hand in hand here, which just isn't seen enough in the Western Mass restaurant scene. Truly a top notch restaurant experience, from servers to kitchen.

Maybe I was wooed early on, but cannot say it's five stars any longer. I'll give them a 3/4 but expect to spend some money. Can't say I've had a great meal in the past 3-4 experiences. Very disappointed by the Easter brunch, they literally just winged it and accepted money. Cocktail list is great, and specials are often well done. Few items on the seasonal menu are hit or miss. Pastas I've heard are excellent.

Our workplace holiday party was at the Federal again this year and I think it was even better than last year. The appetizers were amazing. You have to try the risotto balls, zucchini match sticks, scallops with guacamole sauce, and fried artichoke hearts. They were all delicious. We started the main meal with the famous federal salad. It is famous for a reason. It had chick peas and tomato and other delicious foods. Then we moved on to a fantastic pasta. I followed the pasta with the main course, filet with grilled asparagus. My filet was cooked just how I wanted and it was tender and juicy. Then I had the raspberry chocolate cake for dessert. It was all yummy. I'm still stuffed but I enjoyed it all so much.

YELP NEVER FAILS ME! Our team from NY were in town, we have been in the car since 3pm and decided that before we head back out to NYC, we should grab a bite to eat. I was appointed to find a place for team dinner and I found this place. SO ROMANTIC! Well, it was very suitable for work because they have a private room that can fit 10 of us. We have our own private room with our own server for the night. Service was spectacular, cocktails and wine were great and food was amazing! We started off with a round of cocktails and couple of bottles of wines (red and white). The Cherry mojito was refreshing and the Federal lemonade was a hit. For food we had: Bucket of risotto balls Zucchini mashed salad with toasted almonds - OMG, best dish that night A variety of sides - polenta, asparagus, portabella mushroom For my entree, I had the scallop dish that has 5 huge scallops. Wow! We ended the dinner with a few things of desserts. Unfortunately, my dessert was not that great, I can't even remember it. But our overall experience was great, so deserve 5 stars!!!

This is the romantic place my wife and I go occasionally. What is interesting is how suburban the location is. The place looks like it would be a house in the middle of neighborhood in Agawam. However, the "house" is filled with private dining rooms, a bar area, and a large public dining room where you can sit in finely draped tables. Excellent service and waitstaff are very attentive to your needs. Atmosphere is quiet, often romantic, but calm and inviting for all guests and customers. This is excellent fine dining in a random location. The frequent specials and diverse menu is something to enjoy. The Bucket of Balls is definitely the appetizer of choice, but the occasional specials and menu staples should be tried. Moderately priced for such a fine dining experience. If you do not order drinks, expect $40-$50 for a dinner for 2. Especially since this is not in a city and there is plenty of parking, this is a good, solid, fine dining experience and price. Highly recommend and it is perhaps one of the best dining locations in Western Massachusetts.

Our visit to the Federal was a long time coming. I had bookmarked it on Yelp after reading the many rave reviews (and the ones that weren't so hot were still somehow intriguing -- I kinda wanted to see the acoustic ceiling tiles and weird baby wall art for myself? And for the record, yeah, it's odd and doesn't seem to fit the historic vibe of the place), then several friends recommended it, then I snagged a restaurant.com certificate in, no lie...like 2010, but it somehow continuously managed to drop off our radar when we had the periodic "where to go for dinner" conversations. Until last night. We were seated at a table by an open window with a beautiful, spring evening breeze wafting in. Unfortunately, there were two large groups directly behind us which elevated the noise level and made any intimate conversation impossible. I wish the hostess had considered this when she opted for this table over a nearby empty two-top, as that would have put the fireplace wall in between us and the birthday partiers giving us at least some buffer from their revelry. Anyhow, the food was unquestionably five stars. My compliments to both the chef and the kitchen! We had a range of regular menu items as well as specials and found both the concepts and execution to be outstanding across the board. We started with a complimentary amuse bouche of a single truffled risotto ball with on a bed of mashed potatoes. It was delicious and I was glad that we had an entire order of them coming :) However, by the time our "bucket of balls" was finished, we were both tiring of them...what had started out as a phenomenal bite had become simply...fried and monotonous. But maybe that was just because it had to compete with the fig poppers that we ordered from the nightly specials. Oh my god, the fig poppers! Perfectly ripe black figs stuffed with gorgonzola and wrapped in prosciutto... YUM. Just as we were nearing the end of our appetizers, our server brought us a basket of bread and a bottle of olive oil (timing felt strange, because when she had finished taking our order she said that she would be right back with bread, but then never reappeared until after three different servers had brought us the amuse and two apps. I probably sound like I whine easily and try hard to find fault, but I promise you that's not the case! She was simply absent for long stretches). The bread was sub-par for what I would expect at a fine dining restaurant. Just slices of generic tasting white bread with a slightly rubbery crust, and not only was it not heated, but it actually had a noticeable chill throughout. Meh. Entrees were truly stellar. Ryan got the truffled mac & cheese with an addition of braised short ribs, and I got a roasted pork loin special. Both portions were huge, and I think mine was legit enough for two people. I brought half of it home (yay!). We swapped multiple bites and concurred that his mac & cheese was the best either of us had ever tasted. I don't even know how to describe the flavors, but they were perfect, as were the textures...chewy, creamy, sharp and mild all at the same time, and the pasta still retained a perfect bite. The short ribs (served sans bone) were fall-apart fork tender and loaded with deep, rich flavor. My roast pork was cooked perfectly and was served on goat cheese mashed potatoes with a sweet & sour eggplant caponata and (fried basil leaves?). I cannot convey how splendidly everything worked together. Each component was loaded with flavor but, when combined, they didn't clash in the least...rather, everything just perfectly complimented everything else. The caponata had the usual melt-in-your-mouth veggies, plus plump golden raisins that seemed more like some kind of exotic berry, and soft, buttery pine nuts. I'm going to have to try to recreate this dish at home. I uploaded pictures but they absolutely fall short of doing proper justice to this food. The reason I'm not giving five stars is, sadly, because of the service. Our server was friendly enough and helpful when we had questions about the menu or the specials, but she was not attentive and went missing for long stretches of our meal. Perhaps this was because she was also taking care of the large parties? They didn't seem particularly short-staffed, but who knows. For instance, I was only drinking water and my small glass was empty before we finished our appetizers... but she didn't refill it once the entire night. Not once. I watched her refill other nearby tables and kept thinking she would come do ours any second, but she never even looked in our direction. My boyfriend offered me his glass of water, which I eventually drained, but she still never came to refill. It was too bad to have anything detract at all from our experience, and hard to imagine a "Waiting 101" miss like this, but there you have it. The food will keep us returning and I can definitely see this becoming one of our favorite date-night spot.

This review is for Jan 25th a Saturday evening. One should know that this restaurant is a cut above the average and therefor comes with certain expectations and at $70pp, deservedly so. I ordered the Date Salad special appetizer, it was very good. The dates were filled with cheese and it was appetizing although I thought it had too much dressing. I ordered the Special Entree a Cod Brodo aka Cod with a broth. The entree experience was confusing and like a Guillotine quickly sheered the 5 star review into 3 stars. Here's why: The first cod served to me was the correct presentation a Cod Brodo (with or in broth). However, the Brodo was barely warm and the Cod was not fully cooked making the first couple of bites rather ...., unappetizing. After calling it to the servers attention the dish was quickly taken away and within 2-3 min. out came a new Cod, fantastic right (?) ... wrong! They plated and presented this Cod almost as if it were a different meal. I had to think for a minute what was it I ordered ... Oh right The Cod en Brodo My new Cod Brodo had No Brodo in the bowl, but was served on top of a mound (think awkward heaping) of whipped potato with some julienne veg. it was somewhat edible but bland and not a Brodo. I called it to the servers attention and I was told the first Cod should have come with the potato, and it was a mistake .... Ok ... what about "The Brodo" aspect of the dish was that re-conceptualized too?? I'm not sure what the server was or wasn't doing or thinking after I pointed out "The Brodo" was missing .. all I got was a strange deer-in-the headlight's look. For a restaurant of this caliber, price point and reputation the Entree experience was a huge disaster and should not have happened. Perhaps the Chef was not watching how his specials were being served? Dessert (the three varieties of chocolate was a bit of an over-kill). Sometimes less is more; one thing done perfectly is all it takes. 1. the panna cotta lacked flavor although the texture was perfect. 2. the frozen banana popsicle is wrong! It was a frozen banana covered with white/dark chocolate, notice I said frozen twice, more like FROZEN. I wasn't going out to dinner to break a tooth nor eat food on a stick .. FROZEN~! The accompanying chocolate covered peanut brittle was OK, but again a "finger food". 3. white chocolate mousse was the best of the bunch. Note:I mention 4 different selections and I didn't say one was delicious or fantastic. The complementary Hors d'oeuvre sent by the chef was good, it's a filled Fried Rizzoto Ball. However it's a bit strange to make it the every day give-away because it is a bit anti-climatic. The complementary cotton candy was an over-kill. It felt like I was trying to be convinced to like The Federal. The menu looks great and I like the concept. Service was very good although for the casual read of the menu the service (server's) are a bit pretentious, I prefer friendly and attentive. Regarding service: Note to server (s) ... and manager; at the level of this establishment server's should not be reading specials from pieces of paper. Is it that difficult to remember 4 specials? Note to my server, you should start out your shift knowing what the selection that changes daily is on the chocolate plate, not have to "go check". In conclusion, I don't care for the decor, a faux contemporary look-feel that is very disjointed and sterile, much like the food and service .. disjointed.

A friend and I recently dined at The Federal. We very much enjoyed the ambiance. The talented musician playing guitar only added to the pleasant atmosphere. However, we were heavily disappointed to see foie gras on the menu. This item is produced by using an extremely cruel method of forcing a pipe down the throats of ducks and geese, then force feeding them until their livers are grossly enlarged. These livers are used to make the fois gras pate. I don't know if the owners are aware of the cruelty of foie gras, but I am composing a letter to make them aware and to let them know that I will not be back until it is off the menu.

Had a large family get together at the Federal recently. First off, I was very impressed with the ambience. It was like walking into this large, classy house the owner was inviting you to sit down and have dinner in. We had a large party, so our reservations were for a private room. We got there about a half hour early and they already had our room ready. Very impressed. We had the risotto balls and the zucchini strings for our appetizer. Both were fantastic. I actually was surprised at how good the zucchini was. I also had the Caesar salad, which was amazing. The addition of the fried egg was curious, but ended up being the highlight of my meal. For dinner I had the Mac and cheese with a braised short rib. Again, very good. The combination of the sweet barbecue sauce and the cheese was perfect. The short rib was cooked perfectly, easily tearing away with my fork. Finally I had the banana Nutella crepes for dessert. Fantastic. The glazed bananas were delicious. Added to the crepes it was even better. Last but not least, the service was top notch. Starting with having our room ready early to the attention the waitstaff showed to us, I have nothing but good things to stay. If your looking for a special evening, I highly recommend the Federal.

I have been to the Federal many times, and was very disappointed last night when we were there with friends. I had to send my filet mignon back, I had asked for med rare and it was well done. That has never happened before. Also, we were at the table chatting after dinner and the hostess came over and asked us to leave the table because people were waiting for it, and to go to the bar if we wished. The table next to us was available, and when I mentioned that the bar was full and there was no room she said, when the party of 4 waiting for our table came there would be room in the bar. The bar was standing room only, and that would be tight, we were never offered a free drink or other compensation for being asked to leave the table. Also, we had been there a little over 2 hrs, not exactly a long time for a meal. I usually recommend the federal to anyone for a fine restaurant, but after this, I don't know

I had dinner here last month during a business trip to the area after discovering my first choice wasn't open on Mondays. I'm glad I did because everything about the place was great. The restaurant is in an old converted house/mansion. We sat in the bar area and was served right away. They had a nice selection of wines and beers and the items on the menu was pretty ambitious. I had the veal duo entree which was veal prepared two ways. The meat was braised with a delicious crust on the surface and the meat was moist. My coworker had the filet and he thoroughly enjoyed it. The atmosphere, service, and food was excellent. I would stop by here again if I am in the area.

In days past, I would have given The Federal five stars. It is still by far the best restaurant in a one hour radius of the Springfield, MA area. The ambiance is relaxed. The decor is understated continental without being silly or kitschy (Visit Kaptain Jimmy's, also in Agawam for a case study in every thing that a restaurant should not be.......it has a ridiculous pirate theme more appropriate for Chucky Cheese). Last night, my very young and cheeky waitress asked/scolded me with "You must not be from around here!" when I asked her if the salmon was wild or farm raised. When I asked why my entree took over an hour to arrive, she scolded again, "It's very busy tonight." She would be better suited to a diner. She's probably related to someone at the restaurant. The owner/chefs are brave and to be lauded for having opened this kind of restaurant in an area which does not readily appreciate fancy food. The Federal deserves to be a destination. The food is usually excellent. Last night was no exception. The Fra Diavolo pasta with shrimp was exquisitely done. The deserts were also exceptional without being overdone.

The Federal is a hair's breadth from 5 stars. I loved the food and the service, and I'm willing to believe that with the variety of rooms they have that If I had eaten in one of the others it would have blown me away. I came with a group of 5, we were seated at a big table in the back corner of the restaurant. We passed the bar/pub looking room and a function room, the main dining room was very buttoned up and a touch stuffy. However, most of the people eating there seemed a little older and probably aren't into the atmosphere at a place like Latitudes for instance. Despite the super fine dining vibe, they're very welcoming and whether you're dressed casual or in a suit it's an equally comfortable place, and they aren't afraid to put non-traditional dishes on the menu. They bring out the truffle risotto balls from the Bucket of Balls appetizer on spoons as an amuse bouche... if they sold them in a bathtub rather than a bucket it still wouldn't be enough. I loved them! My pork special was very nice, and though it's usually a red flag when restaurants have a make your own meal section it does work out well. Plus complimentary cotton candy for dessert! They have too many quotation marks on their menu (the meatballs in their pasta and "meatballs" is chicken and pancetta) and some of the food is a bit overworked, to the point where it's hard to understand from the description on the menu what you're getting. I did really like it here, it's a flagship that elevates the local food scene.

Risotto balls were delicious. I had the braised short rib with the red wine sauce and it was cooked to perfection. Service was excellent! We were late for our reservation on a Friday night and they took us immediately. Only downside is that it is expensive but at least when you eat the food you feel better about spending the money!

Great place to share a bucket of balls and pizza in the bar. They have a nice happy hour and the atmosphere in the bar is great. The dining room is also very nice for a quiet romantic meal. Ive always had great service here as well.

Oh, baby !! Where to begin. Me and my sister had both seen this place featured on Boston's Phantom Gourmet TV show and it really looked good, so we decided to make the trip from Cape Cod to go. Being it was a Friday night, we made reservations just in case. We were promptly seated and started the night with the French onion soup with braised short rib and onion rings. Although the portion could have been slightly bigger, it wasn't a huge concern where there was so much more food coming out. The difference between a good and crappy onion soup is how salty it either is or isn't. This was absolute perfection. They also have a lobster bisque with bacon and a clam casino pizza that both looked very promising. When they brought out the soup, they also brought out mini risotto balls to try in this cream sauce. They literally were one of the best parts of the meal. I think we could have had 20 of them. Next was filet mignon perfectly cooked to medium rare with various sides like fries, asparagus, etc. We both had it and didn't even need a knife. Only one dessert out of many was ordered and they were crepes with and apple filling and apple gelato. Again, we could have had 20 orders of just that. The service was out of this world. It was a team effort, but was headed by Adam C. who took his job seriously without taking himself seriously. Some places like this can be somewhat stuffy and he wasn't. He went out of his way to make us feel at home. For two people with appetizer, dinner, dessert, coffee and tip, the total was $137.00 and was more than well worth every dime. If you are in the area, it isn't necessarily the easiest place to find, but so well worth it.

The main dish and appetizer were probably the best I've ever had. Unfortunately, the room looked like a banquet room in a wedding hall. It was not the romantic ambiance that I was expecting. In looking at the pictures, it seems like there are other rooms that might be better. We started with the "bucket of balls". Risotto balls in mashed potatoes. Fantastic. I'd go back just for the risotto balls. I ordered the Red Wine Braised Short Ribs. The short ribs were out of this world good. The red wine taste of the meat combined with the blue crab hash is amazing. I will never eat anything that good again. My wife had the rack of lamb, which she enjoyed very much. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful. The complimentary risotto balls (they gave us two before we ordered a full order) and banana cotton candy were a nice touch. The before dinner cocktails and the desserts were good, but not in the same league as the appetizer and main dishes.

The food and service was out of this world!!! From the courteous and knowledgeable waitstaff to the delicious and eclectic food options it was an amazing experience! The bar area is cozy with a variety of high top tables and beautiful high backed booths! The dining room was both elegant and comfortable with tasteful character throughout. We were welcomed by a complimentary appetizer and enjoyed amazing appetizers and dinners that you don't see everywhere! From stuffed figs to rack of lamb and hazelnut crepes it just made this our favorite new place!! Highly recommend this place for a romantic dinner, drinks with friends, or any special occasion!

I came in from Cleveland, OH to visit family and my Aunt raved about this place. Not many people realize this, but Cleveland actually has an impressive food scene that rivals many other culinary US destinations. It's started to make me a bit of a food snob when traveling. At any rate, my Aunt said my wife and I would love this restaurant. I didn't set my expectations high since I'm quite picky, but wow was my Aunt was correct! There's not much to say that hasn't been already stated by other reviewers. The Federal would easily be one of my favorite spots if it were in Cleveland. I would say it ranks quite high even when I consider the food I've had in other large cities. Western Mass should be proud to have such a great place available. The space is beautiful and classy--a classic New England home with a splash of modern contemporary. Service was outstanding and the waiter was one step ahead of us at every turn. He knew what we needed and when we needed it without us even asking! The menu was also exciting. I've seen a lot of these dishes in the past, but the Chef's style seemed to add enough new elements that each dish went well above the boring same-old same-old. The items we ordered were also perfectly executed. I can't rave enough about this place. This will be a regular stop for me every time I visit family.

the waitstaff were such a delight. I had the clam chowder and WOW I have never ever had chowder like that in my life. My Father said the same. Truly impeccable work from the chefs. Each plate is a visual masterpiece, along with the taste! All the way down to the dessert my taste buds were singing with joy. I loved it and would go back again in a heartbeat (if I had such expendable cash of course). I highly recommend it.

This is definitely an upscale restaurant in atmosphere (an old New England style home) and upscale menu items/prices (about $70pp). There are not many upscale restaurants in the area and they were very busy on a Tuesday night, thus, clearly well liked. They are best known for their "risotto" balls, one of which comes free to each diner (as an amuse bouche). However, the best term to describes this place is unusual. My wife found the menu impossible. Everything is in quotes - meaning it is not truly what it says. For example, the "risotto" in quotes is a pasta based dish, not rice. There is another "risotto" out of beets. Virtually everything on the menu is in quotes so it was hard to figure out what anything was. Also the menu choices have a variety of ingredients but are not necessarily good together. I got their "Sloppy Joe" special, which consisted of a salad based "cole slaw" on top of pulled beef short ribs, on top of grilled scallops on top of polenta. Sound good. Individually, the items were good (especially the scallops) but the taste of these items together did not blend well flavorwise. One of our friends got the lobster and ribs dish - the ribs were excellent but the grilled lobster was tough and dry. They also provided a free "cotton candy" pre-dessert. Perhaps the best dish of the evening was the beignets for dessert Overall, we enjoyed the atmosphere, service was good, but the food was a bit off in term of the flavor profile as well as the execution. I image they experiment a lot and some are hit I would not call the restaurant bad, but I expect more from an upscale restaurant and this one didn't deliver. Probably will not return.

Three words, Fantastic, Fantastic, Fantastic! The Federal has a phenom menu backed up with excellent service and great wine selections. I enjoy their Filet often which happens to be some of the tastiest and flavorful dead cow to be had on a plate. Add one of their delicious sauces such as Truffle butter, and you have a medley of flavor in your mouth. We also enjoyed our Thanksgiving meal there and it pleased even the most demanding of critics ( my parents). I'm so thankful to have such a wonderful gem of an eatery so close to home. My wife and I agree that The Federal is worth the drive from any distance. Also, their bucket of balls will be the tastiest balls you've ever had in front of your face. No kidding.

Not many restaurants can create such a positive dining experience on so many levels. The building is a about a 17th century plantation and is decorated so exquisitely and tastefully. My wife and I were looking for a half way point to meet our friends from CT. We stumbled upon The Federal! So glad we did. The valet parking is very nice especially on a rainy night. My only negative was the fact that there were many Holiday Parties going on and it was very loud. The wine list was extensive and our waiter Richard suggested a Rothschild Bordeaux that was on special and it was amazing with the food we chose. Now on to the good. Yes the Risotto balls are everything folks rave about. My wife had the Lobster risotto and was having foodasms during her whole meal. I had the porterhouse and our friends had scallops and seared tuna. The presentation of every dish reminded me of culinary school restaurants and everyone at the table raved about their dishes. Dessert was even better and the surprise at the end is a very cool touch. I cannot divulge but it's a very nice touch. So, after 3 hours we were done but an amazing experience! If you want a truly fine dining experience and good value for your money, visit The Federal! And guys, this would be the place to take a date or your wife!! See my pics here on yelp.

Don't miss: Risotto balls Autumn Bon bons Tuna tartar/Asian style Beet risotto Truffled Mac and cheese Braised short ribs and/or veal cheeks if they are available You really cannot go wrong here! The Sunday brunch is also amazing but be sure you plan for it to be a long breakfast. It's not a place you rush in and out of.

Outstanding! Everything! The menu is diverse with more choices than you can have at one meal. On the last page of the menu you can creat your own meal by choosing the entre, 2 sides, and sauce. That's what I did- got grilled shrimp with garlic butter sauce, polenta, and fried brussel sprouts. No left overs! I was there with a party of 5, each had something different, and everyone was happy. We started with an order of the famous risotto balls- not to be missed, and ended with the cotton candy they make fresh and deliver to each table. It is really expensive. This is not a cheap quick dinner out. But the service is fabulous and the food outstanding, and for a special occasion (which this was) it is THE place to celebrate.

I went to the Federal with a group of friends for a birthday. The food was excellent!! I had the surf and turf, beef short ribs and lobster tail. You could eat the short rib with a fork. It was to die for. The risotto balls were amazing. The desserts were to due for as well. The beignets, red velvet cupcake Sunday. This place is a must try!!

This restaurant is unlike anything you will get in western mass. The cuisine all had a twist to it that makes you want to come back. It's on the pricy side but you would expect that from a primer chef. This place can compete against some of the best restaurants in any major city.

OMG, Yum this is a restaurant that is perfect for anniversaries, birthdays and any other special occasion. My husband and I went for our first visit on our 15th wedding anniversary and we were not disappointed! Yes the little risotto balls are to die for. We both had the braised ribs; the dish was very complex (all delicious) but worked really nicely together. The only negative about the ribs were that they were a tad dry, but it was an extremely busy evening; since everything was so tasty it didn't ruin the dish for me. I wanted to share a dessert with my husband...I guess I was looking for something chocolatey and cakey but the dessert menu consisted of banana bread pudding and cotton candy and individual chocolates....not what I was hoping for so we didn't order dessert.

Wow. Had one of the best meals I've had here tonight! I made my reservation right here on Yelp! After humming and hawing over the whole menu, I opted with "Be your own chef." Pick the main deal, add two sides and a sauce. I got the Filet Mignon (medium rare - perfectly done) with truffle butter (orgasmic), grilled asparagus and pureed butternut squash. I even took home my dining partner's leftovers - he got the scallop hash, so I can't wait to try that tomorrow! Everything was just perfect, from the bread, to the amuse bouche risotto balls and finally to the dessert that I was already too full for - Red Velvet Cupcake Sundae. I'm kind of ticked I haven't come before and I'm hoping to try tons more on the menu. It doesn't go that light on your wallet, though, and the atmosphere was a bit... quiet for my taste - it felt a bit like a library.

We have dined here several times in the past, on average We eat here about 3-4 times a year. I had dinner here with a friend about a month ago, we ate at the bar on a Thursday evening, it was very quiet and nice atmosphere. I had noticed at that time that my appetizer was cold and sub-par, our dinners however were good and dessert not so good with a lumpy pumpkin creme brûlée, which we did comment about, but nothing was done. We went to the federal this past Saturday night for a birthday dinner. To make a long story short, the appetizers were muscles and tuna, tuna tasted like it was sitting in the fridge and the muscles were under cooked (raw), many not even opened (dead before cooking). When the server came to take them away 3/4 not eaten she never asked how they were or what was wrong-she litterally snatched them off the table. We don't like to complain but I commented yes we are all set with those they were not very good, she did not respond and walked away.our dinners were also just ok....tenderloin tasted previously frozen for my brother in law and husband and part of my meal was freshly cooked and hot (chicken meatballs) and the other part was Luke warm (gnochi).....our dessert was yummy. Service from our particular server was not great, our bill was $300 (for 4 people 1 drink each) for that kind of money I have certain expectations that were not met in this visit or my previous one for that matter. Not sure if there has been a change in chefs or a decline in quality. We will be waiting awhile until we return and were just sad as this is one of our favorites!

Perfect. The room was full, but not loud. The service is the perfect balance of attentive yet not lingering, engaging but not intrusive. Cocktails were tasty. The food was everything I was promised. The risotto balls were incredible. I usually shy away from anything "truffled" because often the chef is heavy-handed and you can't taste anything else. That is NOT the case here. The truffle is there, but is is only one note in each dish. Do yourself a favor and eat here.

The bucket of balls and "everything" smoked salmon were delicious. I got the short ribs for my main course and that was good but nothing spectacular. For dessert we tried the trio of chocolate which I wasn't too impressed with and I do think their dessert menu could be better. It was about 4 bite size pieces of different things the best one being the chocolate cake which I would rather have had a larger portion of just that. I enjoyed the complimentary risotto balls and cotton candy. Overall It was good and I would like to go back to try some new things.

The Federal is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. I have tried many different meals on their menu and I honestly can say that I have never had a bad meal. Their menu changes every season so we try to make a visit at least once every few months. They usually give you complimentary risotto balls before your meal which is a good way to try them without committing to the entire appetizer. The Rhode Island Calamari was my favorite appetizer which had fried calamari and grape tomatoes over a bed of mashed potatoes. I was skeptical about the mashed potatoes with this dish but just trust the chefs at the federal- they really know what they're doing. I love getting the Federal Chop Salad which comes in a mason jar that you pour out into a dish which I assume helps the avocado spread to mix better. For me, that could be a meal by itself, especially if I add shrimp or chicken. I have also had the braised short ribs which were amazing, as is the truffled mac and cheese. My friend usually gets the Kobe beef burger which is always cooked perfectly. The quality of the food here is outstanding. Their prices are about $20 per dish, give or take, but worth every penny. The deserts are awesome- they usually give you complimentary cotton candy but I would recommend also trying pretty much anything else they have. We have tried the beignets that come with 3 different dipping sauces as well as the crepes and they are both delicious and fresh. The service here is excellent as they are very informative about the meals and the drinks. They are also very attentive without hovering. The Federal is awesome and definitely our go-to place for a nice dinner out.

After seeing all the four and five stars you're probably thinking this guy is an idiot! Seeing that I am intimately familiar with the person writing this I could see where at times this could be true... this is not one of those times. Im going to start off with the pros: I never have to go there again. Now for the lengthy list of cons: So to start off with we made reservations at 6:45pm on a Saturday night and we weren't seated until 7:05pm. I wasn't aware that reservations had a built in 20 minute fudge factor. Our food also took awhile lets just say that if we were at Bennigans I would have ate fo' free!!! That being said I realize this isn't that type of establishment but seriously realize its the weekend people and staff the kitchen accordingly. Our waitress was nice but that is where the compliments end. The overall word that describes the food and decor was disjointed. Like another fellow yelper said an industrial ceiling with the commercial ventilation louvers and the yellow aged recessed lighting really detracted from the wainscoting and the restored fireplace and other original like touches of the place. For art they chose pictures of babies in diapers and random other people I don't care to know. WTF!!! Either put art or nothing at all I'm suprised there weren't fingerpainting on the wall. Some of the trim at the front door and other areas reminded me of my sisters house where years of screaming kids hitting everything with god knows what has given it that unkempt touch that no one cares to see when they are paying this much money for food. I really love old buildings and finish carpentry work so seeing a beadboard on one side of the hallway with wainscoting on the other really threw me for a loop. Just because they each look good doesn't mean you should put both in the same space how they did, freaking ridiculous. Ok so on to the food. We started off with the roasted beet rissoto with goat cheese and "candied" (guess they forgot the candied part) walnuts. I thought the beets and the cheese were nice but the huge size of the walnuts made those particular bites unpleasant because all you taste is the bitterness of the nut. I would recommend actually having candied walnuts and making everything in the risotto more uniform in size. The best thing I had all night was the clam chowder. It truly was delicious all five bites of it. So here are where my problems began I paid 10.95 for this bowl of clam chowder so I am expecting a hearty serving when in fact it was a paltry amount served in a very large bowl which made the size that much more infuriating. So you know how people ask you how you are doing and if you really laid all of your shit at their feet they would be like "WOW this is akward I was just expecting you to say "Everything is great... and you", well I don't roll that way. So when the waitress asked how everything was I playfully mentioned the fact that just because it is served in a bowl doesn't make it a bowl of soup and maybe they should serve it in a cup. I know I sound like a dick but really who hasn't been let down at a restaurant, and wanted to say something. So for dinner we both went with a fish I went with salmon topped with a lobster coleslaw with a polenta and beef short rib base, my wife had the cod with some type of broth and a crab cake on the side. So to start off with both of our fish were very dry. My wife's crabcake was barely edible its kind of like if you burn toast and when you eat it the inside may be fine but all that is ruined by the charred outside... meet my wife's crabcake. After I tried her fish I told her "it tasted like 2nd day old microwaved fish" it was awful the only saving grace is the broth wasn't bad which in no way saved this dish. My dish was like me taking a crown and coke and blood mary mixing it together and wondering why it tastes like cat piss. Two good things mixed together dont make a great thing. The salmon was dry but edible. The lobster slaw was actually quite nice. The polenta was cooked correctly and the beef short ribs were subpar in my opinion for all the hype. That being said each portion of the dish by itself was ok but if you try mixing it together it was confusing to say the least. I don't know if they use a dartboard to determine what to put in the sides or with the entrees but it was all very bush league. So after our dinner to make sure the evening wasn't a total bust we went to Bottega Cucina for their creme brulee which was delicious. I have been to nice 5 star restaraunts and I have eaten from a roadside truck... with each of these experiences we have certain standards that we estabilish as the baseline which in my opinion the Federal failed on all accounts with the exception of the waitstaff. If you want good food go to Bottega Cucina or Shallots they may not be considered a fancy restaraunt but at least you don't leave feeling cheated.

It was my wife's birthday, so I wanted to have a special night out. A few weeks earlier we had gone Latitude and some people had told us that The Federal was really good and similar to Latitude. Our entire group was disappointed. It was a much much older crowd, it was a very stuffy overly formal atmosphere which lead you to believe the food would be great, but it wasn't that good. This made the all the buildup and formal behavior of the wait staff seem silly. I mean all that doesn't matter if the food isn't any good and it just fell short for me lacking flavor.

Spent this past Saturday night dining at The Federal for the first time....this must be the best place to dine in the area. restaurant was extremely crowded....but our table was ready upon our arrival. First thing we noticed was the loudness of the restaurant---way too loud crowd. While the noise level remained high we were impressed with our surroundings. its a beautiful restaurant. My Manhattan cocktail was done perfectly..wife enjoyed her glass of pinot grigio. I opted for the "fried" new England clam chowder...a ridiculously good soup. wife enjoyed her chopped salad very much. we did get a risotto ball each as an added appetizer....very very good. For the main event I had the beef "2 ways"..a nice filet mignon with braised short ribs. Wife had the "bon bons"....butternut squash ravioli. delicious home made entrée. besides the noise level..service seemed to sag before our meal came out. As I said,..place was packed..so i'm going to cut them some slack. from the parking lot young men attendants...to our hostess.....to our server.....everything was very professional and positive. bar area looked extremely interesting with a guitarist doing the entertaining. its all pricy but not as bad as you might think for what you get! very positive experience. cotton candy with our tea and coffee was a nice added touch.

It's our #1 restaurant in the area. My wife and I just get an excellent meal on every visit. Their truffled mac and cheese could be one favorite winter comfort meals of all time. But, their fish dished fit my normal, more healthier appetite. Oh yeah, and get a bucket of risotto balls!

While on our honeymoon my husband and I came here for what we hoped would be a romantic gourmet dinner. Not being from the area we relied on Yelp to guide us towards our good meal and night out. The Federal was so well reviewed we thought it couldn't get any better and made reservations. The restaurant itself is large but with a quiet intimate setting and attractive decor inside. The photographs of children on the walls was a bit odd though. I'm sure there is a story behind the artwork but without knowing it or the children it just felt strange sitting in a dining room surrounded by them. The service and food we experienced were an extreme disappointment. Our waitress was very unattentive from start to finish. It was not a busy night but she made her presence very limited. I don't enjoy spending a meal trying to hunt down your server because they disappeared. And while I don't need to waited on constantly it seems customary to ask dinners how their meal is at least once. Poor service aside our bigger problem was the food itself. We came here with high expectations not only after reading reviews but also seeing the expensive prices on the menu online. We were pleased with their signature appetizer - a bucket of risotto balls - but that was all we liked. For an entree my husband had the surf and turf - short ribs and a half lobster tail. The meat and sauce were very salty. The lobster tail looked as it was quartered not halved - the tiniest thing we'd ever seen. It only gave him three small unimpressive bites. The lobster meat did not have that succulent "melt in your mouth" quality that you'd expect. I had ordered the pork rib chop served with braised cabbage and pierogis. The chop was 3 inches thick. You would think that would equate to moist and tender meat. Instead it was an overcooked exterior and undercooked center that was extremely difficult to cut due to its shear size and texture. I would have rathered they split it and served me only half. I could not taste any of the horseradish brine or really any flavor at all in the pork chop. The cabbage was what tasted brined - then braised. It tasted so salty and bitter I could barely eat it. I like cabbage raw and cooked but this side tasted so overwhelming and pungent because of the sauce. For someone who enjoys salt and has a tendency to oversalt food even I couldn't appreciate the high sodium levels in either of our dishes. My plate was left almost half full when the waitress simply came by to retrieve the dishes and asked my husband if I'd like mine to go. We were never asked the quality of our food but I was hoping my full plate would have been a clear indicator to pose the question. Instead I came back from the bathroom and saw my meal wrapped up for me. I knowingly left it behind. I can't imagine reheating an already poorly-cooked pork chop. When asked if we'd like dessert we politely said no thank you. A complimentry basket of homemade cotten candy was served to us with the check. All that sugar was actually a great offset to the large amounts of salt we had just ingested. We paid our bill and quietly left feeling like we had been fooled into the most dissatisfying and costly dinners. I realize we could have presented our concerns to the waitress regarding our food. But when you are dining at such an upscale restaurant you tend to hope you would never have to. We were truly let down by our experience here.

The food is a work of art. It looks too gods to eat and tastes even better! The seasonings and spices blend in a magical way and it's taste bid heaven! The wine selection is superb, the atmosphere is great and the wait staff is very friendly and accommodating. I will be back often!!

My review for The Federal is long overdue. My mother threw me my baby shower here back in February and it was truly an awesome experience. I arrived early with friends in tow to set up the tables and was greeted by the head waiter with such a sweet and helpful smile, I was immediately put at ease. He toured us around and explained how the buffet would work, how the tables were laid out and even where the coat rack and bathrooms were. He let me know that he would help me in anyway with anything I needed. I WISH I remembered his name (I actually wrote it down but lost the paper). Either way... THANK YOU! The food was phenomenal as usual (I have dined here before with family) and the presentation was beautiful. I really don't think my guests had ever seen such a delicious brunch display at a shower. Everyone raved about the truffle mac n cheese and the brioche french toast. The same waiter even packed up the leftovers from the buffet and wrote my name on the things he knew were my favorite. Now this guy knows how to please a pregnant patron!! I never once needed or wanted anything that wasn't immediately offered or even preemptively brought to me. My guests had an awesome time and my baby shower was a memory I will always love to look back on. Thank you so much to the staff of the Federal for pulling off a perfect brunch for me and my family and friends. I will be recommending The Federal for private events to everyone who is looking for a really special experience.

The food, service and ambiance are superb. The mussels appetizer was excellent and really enough for an entrée. For entrees we had the scallops and the filet mignon. Both were excellent with the filet cooked perfectly. The seasonal pumpkin gelato for dessert was incredible! I could have eaten an entire quart. If you are looking for a special place with superb food, service and atmosphere, The Federal will not disappoint.

Great atmosphere and style. This is the place to go on a romantic night out. The prices may be a bit high (not that bad) but the service and food are worth every penny. Every night they have free apps in the lounge/bar where they serve samples on spoons. This is a great way ti sample the menu. Try the Kobe beef burger.

Who would ever think this little restaurant tucked away in Western Massachusetts would be so, so, so divine? I meaaaaan, we sort of had an idea judging by previous reviews, but still. Wow. Started with a tomato salad with Buratta that was so perfect, words don't even begin to describe. Also had the pork belly fries, which were silky and salty, and fried to perfection. The risotto balls = yes please! Also, try the chowder. That is it. I was my own chef for my entree, but believe it when I say, there is no lack of quality of creativity on their menu. I was feeling a little overwhelmed by the goodness of our first courses, that I need something simple, and delicious. And that it was. This theme remained through dessert, when we had the beignets, which were the proper ending for this spectacular food experience. The service was fantastic, consistent, and friendly.

Historic beauty of a building, Open Table options, fresh raspberry lemonade, great half bottle wine list, amazing salad and gourmet pizza options, with a classy and likely qualified romantic environment. The live acoustic guitar at the bar flowing into the dining room, vast mixed drink options, and mindful service staff make this likely a high quality stop for anyone in the area (20+ mile radius easily). When I looked around for other chef presented food options this really was the only one and when I went looking for it I was shocked to find it was real - the surrounding options are scary so keep this in mind when reading my review. I could easily bump this up a notch just because I was lacking alternatives of high quality.

Looking for a truly great dining experience in the Pioneer Valley? This is it. Great ambiance, a nice selection of cocktails, and a unique menu make The Federal a star in the area. The Bucket of Balls is a must, although most likely you will be presented one ball as a complimentary amuse busche from the chef. For me that's never enough. I need the creamy deliciousness of at least 3 or 4 balls to feel satisfied. The mac and cheese as others have said is to die for. Last time I went I had the tuna which was a little bit overcooked but the presentation was excellent. After the drinks, apps, and entrees I've never had room for dessert but it always looks good. Once I saw they were serving some sort of gourmet cotton candy which struck me as fun, whimsical, and something completely different so be prepared for some potentially creative desserts. There's some great restaurants in WMass so don't take this as a knock, but I 100% agree that if this place was in NYC or Boston it would be a much hotter destination then it seems to be right now.

I was happy to find this restaurant because I didn't have the same luck last time I was in Springfield... I sat at the bar since I arrived rather late for dinner. It is definitely a beautiful restaurant and perfect for a date. Ok the good... I ordered the truffled mac and cheese and it was out of this world good. If I could have licked my plate clean I would have done it. I also had their special for dessert which was a creme brulee, with a dollop of gelato nestled between two homemade chocolate chip cookies. It was super yummy. The interesting part of this was the end, in typical dessert fashion they placed a couple mint leafs on top. Since I don't like the taste of mint I moved it aside, but it was when I touched it that I realized it was crumbly like paper. I wasn't sure what they had done but decided to try it. It tasted Ahhwesome!!! So I asked the bartender about it and she said they deep fry it! I guess everything does taste better fried. The bad... The hostess wasn't very friendly, which is never good for a hostess. I thought the portions would be generous so I only ordered the half portion of the mac and cheese and it was almost appetizer size or tapas size. Which was disappointing considering the price. Oh and they are guilty of doing my least favorite thing... if I ask for a coke and you don't carry it, tell me that... don't just serve me a generic and expect that I won't know the difference. Big faux pas. Come to think of it, with their prices they should be able to afford real coke products... no, it wasn't pepsi either.

I drove almost 90 minutes each way during a snow/rainstorm to eat at The Federal and it was worth every near-death experience I had today. Long version: I went to The Federal along with the Western Mass Eat-Up Meetup group for an event. So I suppose this isn't a typical dinner experience since there were 42-ish of us there. They were really good in accommodating us though since the layout of the old house really lends itself to many dining rooms for medium-large parties. We started with their risotto balls, which I gather is some kind of signature appetizer of theirs. It was good; just like a deep fried ball of risotto should be. Their list of drinks was impressive and folks who drank really enjoyed it; I didn't drink since I had to drive 90 minutes in a winter storm after dinner to get home. Their salad was delicious. Also, their bread. I cannot take my father here because he will gorge himself on the bread basket and not order a meal and that's not polite. Speaking of politeness, this place is fancy. I'm slightly intimidated by it but it is a nice change from the more casual places I usually go to. I had the hard cider braised pork chop with caramelized sweet potato salad, smoked bacon, rocket and romesco sauce. It was really good pork. The sweet potato salad and the sauce complemented the pork very nicely and I ate every edible particle on my plate. I also had a bite of someone's salmon dish and it was great; it was a little dry, but I like my salmon dry. We got a special group price for dinner but, really, I would definitely pay "normal" price for that pork. My only two complaints were with the dessert and the menu. The dessert, a chocolate cake, wasn't anything spectacular (possibly because I had a slice of really good chocolate cake a few days ago for my birthday). But I guess I'm just being picky because it is pretty good chocolate cake; just not as good as the rest of the restaurant. Their menu also use quotation marks liberally making it look somewhat like a diner menu. I get that when they put quotes around "veal parmasan" they are implying that there's a special twist to the veal parmasan but it is still kind of annoying. That, and the bathrooms (especially the doors) are kind of run down, patched up looking, which matches the old federal house theme but not the atmosphere of the place. Besides that, this place is amazing. The service was great and the atmosphere is really cool once you get used to it. It's expensive, yes, but there are lots of under $15 options for dinner (although you can certainly shell out $30+ for steak and seafood) so I definitely would recommend it even to my employment-challenged friends if they have a special occasion or something. It certainly is one of the best places I've eaten at in Western MA and well worth it.

Here's a perfect example of what the Federal is like. We ordered their signature "Bucket of Balls" appetizer, billed as truffled risotto balls, which sounds playful and a little innovative. The app is fine: amiable little puffs of nondescript friedness with no distinctive flavors (not even truffle!?) but with a pleasant warm crispiness that's nicer than a boot to the junk. These are served over a cone of whipped potatoes that are tasty enough, made with the add-enough-butter-and-anything-becomes-yummy rule. Here's the hilarious part: before the appetizer came, we were treated to an amuse-bouche, solemnly presented with compliments of the chef. The server handed us each a single risotto ball on a spoon: the exact same appetizer we were about to be served five minutes later! So much of the Federal experience is like this, i.e. gestures that are meant to say "fancy restaurant" but are done with no real understanding of what they're supposed to mean, so they become strange, confusing little distractions. The best thing about the Fed is its shamelessly heavy use of ingredients like butter, cheese, oils, etc. in everything. I ordered truffled mac-and-cheese with braised short ribs. The truffle flavor came through here, unlike in the app, and the ribs were nicely cooked, moist and falling apart. This restaurant shines when serving this kind of comfort food, and they'd be smart to discard all their trendy ingredients and zany flavor combos and stick to basics. Somebody back there actually knows how to cook, so why not keep it simple and let that person do his/her thing? As counterpoint, the chef should have a better palate before trying to add pink peppercorns and strawberry sorbet to a warm lemon pudding dessert. Sounded interesting enough to order it, but it just wasn't good. The "Coffee and Doughnuts" dessert also had nice elements, like perfect cinnamon doughnut balls--warm and crisp on the outside, soft and light inside--but went too far with a heavy-handed coffee creme caramel that tasted like one of those low-fat coffee yogurts from Big Y. Another typical bit of Federalness: the restaurant is in a huge stately old white wooden house, worthy of the name. It's beautifully lit from the outside, and driving in you feel like you're in for something special. The main dining room has nice woodwork and a grand fireplace in the center of everything. Then above all this is...a drop ceiling with commercial air vents like you'd see in an airport bathroom. This room could really be elegant if it weren't for this one incredibly obvious and baffling lapse, so it's inexplicable and sad to see that nobody has ever bothered to rectify it in the decades this place has been around. Yet another almost-right-but-horribly wrong concept. My wife has a soft spot for cotton candy, so we were momentarily delighted when a pink goblet of the stuff was presented to us with the check. Unfortunately even this nice gesture was undermined by the fact that the candy had clearly been made a long long time ago, so instead of being light and frothy, it had developed a sticky leathery shell that felt a thick layer of hairspray. This is probably because it was a humid evening and the sugar had absorbed enough water from the air to change its crystalline structure into something more like a fruit rollup. Even though this was a nice idea and probably makes people happy most of the time, my wife found the texture so gross that she wouldn't eat the stuff, unprecedented when cotton candy is available. As I write, three more things come to mind that are so specific to this restaurant that it'd be wrong to leave them out: 1. I went to this place a long time ago when it was called The Federal Hill Club. Back then it had only African-American servers, who were dressed very formally to give the place a sort of "plantation" vibe, which in hindsight I'm pretty sure was intentional. I couldn't have articulated this as a kid, but it made enough of an impression to recall decades later, as we were being led into the dining room. The food might've been better then, but at least the servers aren't racist caricatures now. Good call. 2. Back in those olden times, the Federal Hill Club didn't have a printed menu. Someone came out, pulled up a chair, and sat at your table to describe every available dish. This was inconvenient because it was easy to forget stuff, but charming and distinctive. I've never seen it anywhere else, and it was an interesting idea. 3. The dessert menu has something else I've never seen at another restaurant: a list of candies and other portable items to take home "for the babysitter," including gourmet dog biscuits. Of course this is a transparently cynical attempt to sell even more food (to people who aren't even there!), but part of me wants to believe there's at least a mote of sincerity and thoughtfulness in there as well. This is probably the one innovation at The Federal that works well for all involved.

I've been here several times for their Friday lunches, which they no longer serve. I loved that lunch as a special treat. We were looking for a good place to have Easter brunch so I thought of The Federal. Yes, this place is pricey, but I've always found it to be worth the money and today was no exception. I do agree with the reviewers who question the decor as the pictures of children and flowers with the mirror and the banquet makes it look like a bedroom rather than a restaurant. Four of us went to brunch, and we each ordered a different item. I was really disappointed that the menu they served didn't match the Easter menu on the website, and that took a little while for me to get over. They served a wonderful backet of fresh pastries and breads that were out of this world. I do have to say that it would have been nice to get it right when we sat down rather than having to wait for out order. It felt a little like they wanted to put all the items in at one time and push people through. At $30.00 a head for mainly breakfast items, that should not be happening. They also had some off the menu items, and we weren't sure what was up with that. We stuck to the menu which offered a fabulous selection of breakfast and lunch items. I opted for the filet as I was looking forward to the "meat two ways" that was on the website menu but didn't make it on the actual menu. It was delicious, although I ordered it medium rare and it was far more on the medium side. It was still very delicious as were the mashed potatoes and the fries. My tablemates had the frittata, the banana french toast, and the egss benedict (not the traditional style). They all raved and finished every bite so I know they were not lying. Dessert was even better as I had the Tiramisu, which is one of my favorites. I have to say it was one of the best I've ever had and will for sure order it again. The service was also very solid and attentive, and they were jamming. I live here and often hear mixed review, but I have to say that I've always been pleased and never sorry about paying the price for a meal here. I will for sure be back soon.

Made the reservation online based on all the outstanding reviews. This is probably the finest restaurant I have ever been to from the professional, knowledgeable and friendly staff to the fabulous food and atmosphere. And, I have been to restaurants all over the country and all over the world. We all had incredibly wonderful dinners. The menu selection is over-the-top, meaning something for everyone in any price range. No one will be disappointed. Love this place. It's how every restaurant should be. If you are lucky, you will be there on a night where everyone gets the cotton candy. How cool is that? In addition, we were all freshly grieving the death of a family member. This was a real treat that we truly needed.

Wow. A true find for the true foodie. My wife and I ate here and the food is amazing. The risotto balls with truffle butter were a great start. I had the ravioli and my wife had the lamb. I went here last weekend and had a good time. Yes the pictures of kids on the wall is creepy and the awning and all that funeral home feel is weird but who cares. The strength of this place is without a doubt the service. Our waiter was about as perfect as a server could be. Perfect timing, courteous, and knew his stuff. The food was above average. The clam chowder is very good, and of course quite unique. The Chicken Bolognese is good, not great. I'd love to come back and try another dish. Overall a very sold restaurant and I will be back. P.,S. Awesome touch offering the Chinese food bucket of dog treats. My dogs loved them!

As you can see everyone has a lot to say about the Federal in Agawam. I will not continue with the lofty raves about this restaurant. Let it just be said that this is an outstanding establishment in the back roads of western Ma. Wonderful food, fresh veggies from their own garden (tomatoes that might be the best in southwestern New England) and a dining experience that outpaces any of the city restaurants in the area, Springfield and Hartford combined. And I dont't know where they find their waitstaff but it equals any I have come across of late. You cannot go wrong visiting the Federal. Pricey.....yes $250 for 4 with app, entres, wine, drinks and dessert. Well worth the price. If you are in the area, visiting or a local, it is a wonderful dining experience. Try it......you'll like it !

What a fun night. It was packed when we arrived and we were half hour early for our reservation so we had a drink in the bar and we even seated early. The wait staff is very professional. The wine glasses are the cheap thick ones and they don't have wine stands so the wine chiller has to be on the table, thus taking up a lot of space and even worse- the table was wobbly so we ended up putting it on the ground. We did get the free ball, we also opted for the bucket of balls, fried clam chowder, beet "risotto" and fried clams. All was excellent, the chowder was the best. Entrees we did the veal trio special - chop, cheek, sweetbread, the veal t bone, the short ribs and the scallops. Everyone was very happy with their meals. We received the free cotton candy for dessert. After that we ended up back in the bar for espresso martinis, which were not the best we have had but who cares the place was great fun. attached many pics

We decided to eat the bar boy were we disappointed. The wait services was awful. We had to ask for everything.... beverage napkins, utensils, water.... Our food was brought out in rapid procession.... we were not finished with the appetizers, when the flatbread pizza arrived. The zucchini matchstick salad was so flavorless it was awful. The "special" fig appetizer was just as bad. The figs were so hard. The flatbread pizza came and "looked" delicious. It was so greasy that the oil was running over the board. It was just a bad experience all around. Walking out we were asked how was everything.... I just shook my head.... Unfortunately I think people have been fooled by the hype of this place. Sometime people think it has to be good because it cost so much. We eat out 3 to 4 times a week...and found ourselves wishing we had gone anywhere else.

Ambiance: I dined with several friends at The Federal ~2 weeks ago. Being wintertime it was extremely dark, but nonetheless the building seemed like a rather charming place a warm house type feeling inside. Relatively secluded rooms, spaced out tables and the New England atmosphere make this a great choice for a nice semi-fancy to fancy dining location. Collared shirt is fine but anything less may make one feel out of place. Cost: For the food quality and service I thought the Federal was correctly priced. A solid $$$, you realistically aren't escaping for less than $50 a head. Please note here to be mindful of drinks -- similar to another review who commented that the restaurant used generic soda, a few of us ordered gin & tonics which were poured extremely light and with diet tonic without any comment from the waitress. Food Quality: I'm giving The Federal 4 stars, but for the most part this a tad of a misnomer since a few ho-hum dishes did drag this rating down. The drawbacks: The signature risotto bolls were fair but by no means my favorite item (several restaurants in NYC have heightened my senses on these). We shared the sea scallops w/ duck from the menu among the table and were rather underwhelmed, despite the rather unique decoration to it based mainly on too many taste pallets going off at once. The positives: Most surprisingly, I was very impressed by the pesto paper thin pizza, a nice snack to share before dinner. The clam chowder was extremely fresh, and after having it 4+ times in 3 days I can say this was the best one. The other items that were commented on as 'great' at our table included the lamb, filet, short ribs and banana Nutella crepe dessert. The most enjoyable part of the menu to us was 'you be the chef', allowing a diner to match a main dish with any sauce and sides, which would come in handy for anybody dining with picky people. Service: Good not great. Our waitress missed two people by accident when pouring wine, and did not have much of a answer to the gin & tonic mystery discussed above. Last, we came in just over an hour before close, and were completely rushed through courses by the wait staff (they actually began taking away dinner plates when only ~half of our table was done eating). Somewhat understandable but if we knew that was going to be the case we could have gone elsewhere -- if you're within 90 minutes of close make note of this. When to return: Special occasions and with friends. When making a reservation, probably plan ahead by phoning wait staff and describing your party given the different rooms.

I was in Enfield for some training and had to spend one night by myself before my wife and daughter joined me for vacation:( I decided to find a nice place for dinner and The Federal had some good reviews. The restaurant is in a beautiful old white building surrounded by trees and lawns. I had made a reservation on Open Table, so the friendly and helpful hostess found my reservation and took me to my table right away. I didn't wait long before a very attentive waitress came and brought me a menu and wine list. They didn't have many California wines, but I found a very nice reasonably priced Spanish Garnacha which I thoroughly enjoyed. I started with the Mussel Chowder with Bacon that was incredible. My entree was broiled lamb loin with so many other pleasant surprises I can't tell you exactly what was on the plate. I can tell you that it was amazing. I had no room for dessert, but they brought a complimentary cone of cotton candy anyway. All evening my waitress checked on me and made sure I was having a great experience and I did have a great experience. Dining alone is never much fun, but the folks at The Federal along with the food and wine made this a special memorable experience for me.

Expensive, excellent service but food was just ok. Arrived at 5PM on a Friday night, was asked if we had reservations, said no and they looked at us like we were insane. "Let's see if we can fit you in"...they sat us in the back room which is very pretty, candle-lit...classy. Nice table for 2 with no one else in the room for over an hour, so I guess we were lucky they could "fit us in". The complimentary risotto balls were indeed very good. I had the beet risotto appetizer which was not like any other risotto I've ever had..it was ok. Husband had the chicken meatballs and they were good, nice size portions on both. Husband had the red, white and green salad, just so-so. For dinner I had the truffled mac & cheese with grilled shrimp. Meh...kind of bland. disappointing for 27.95, thought it would be "wow, that was delicious!" Not. Husband had a special double thick pork chop with a pork belly hash...he said it was ok, nothing special. I tried it and agreed. We were both disappointed in the flavors...they weren't any! We had 2 beers, 1 glass of wine, 2 appetizers, 1 salad and 2 entrees and it came to $103, not including tip. I expected the food to knock our socks off, nothing did. Have heard great things about The Federal, maybe it was just an off night...but we wouldn't go back, not for that money.

LOML couldn't make this one as it was business only but I pushed on without her. So my group started with a bucket of balls which is risotto, truffled butter and chives. Great start and the Il Borro wine was a perfect match for the roasted cod over grilled calamari that followed. Finished up with a little caramel gelato and home to LOML. Does not get much better than The Federal....wait staff had great timing and worked our oversized group very well.

I cannot believe this place doesn't have more reviews. I was not expecting it to be this good. I did read somewhere that somebody said this place could be placed in NYC and have a line outside the door to get in and I thought,"Ok sure", but after eating there tonight I can say that is absolutely true. I was blown away by everything. The ambience and service were superb but if I had eaten this food take out in a car I still would have thought it was incredible. The portions are HUGE. After our appetizers we were already full and the complimentary fried risotto balls were delicious. We have tons of leftovers and when I got home, even after being stuffed out of my mind I still managed to take a little bite of each thing and it tasted even better than it did at the restaurant. I also loved this place, it's a very charming and romantic dining room and I loved the music. The restaurant is not on a main road, infact touching their parking lot is the driveway of a house. I think this adds to the feeling of eating here, it's almost like a little getaway when you come here. The food was so delicious, my favorite was probably the butternut squash ravioli, I got the half portion as an appetizer and my boyfriend and I could not stop eating it, we even soaked up the sauce with our bread. My boyfriend also got the sloppy joe sliders as a starter. I thought it was ridiculous that A. they would have sloppy joe sliders here and B. he would order them but they were delicious! He got the quail for an entree and my only complaint was that it was really salty with the olives and the sauce on top of it, but the flavor was great. My scallops "hash" with duck confit and sugar pumpkin puree was sweet, savory, and delightful. I can't wait to eat the leftovers tomorrow. The nutella crepes for dessert with hazelnut gelato was SO yummy and the most adorable thing about the entire meal was that they actually sell doggy biscuits for you to take home to your dog. For three dollars they gave me a cute little box with one big and two small doggy treats, and they actually smell really good (kind of like gingerbread cookies). My puppy went crazy for them. Every bite of food here was exciting and never failed to impress, which is something that is very hard to find in a restaurant especially in a very unlikely town on an unsuspecting little road in Agawam. This has to be the most pleasant surprise of a restaurant I've ever encountered. Expensive, yes, but you will not leave hungry or disappointed. If you want a romantic, delicious meal and aren't sure where to go, go here. I'm so glad we came here instead of going to a more reviewed place in a bigger city because I really don't think much comes close to this. This easily rivals the top restaurants in NYC and Miami, including Gordon Ramsay's. Looking forward to going back! Oh and private parking lot, so there's no worries about parking.

Love the Federal! My favorite restaurant in Western Mass. The food, presentation and staff is outstanding!

Love to go there for lunch on Fridays. The service is always outstanding and the food was amazing. The chef can create a custom vegetarian platter if you ask, which is amazingly good. The food is on the heavy side, but I love it. Lunch prices are good, dinners are pricey but worth the money.
