You know what's nice about Charlie's diner? Well, just about everything, really. Large serving sizes, comfortable seating, great attitude, fairly quick service, and reasonable prices. The atmosphere isn't special, but it is family friendly. You can't have everything, and the particular balance of elements that Charlie's has achieved suits Saint Bernard Parish just fine. If I want fine dining, I'll go into New Orleans. If I want a hearty, large meal in a relaxed spot, I could do a lot worse. I ordered a three-way combo of catfish, shrimp, and oysters. The catfish was sliced into strips, and like the oysters, were breaded and fried; both were good, and this coming from someone who normally doesn't care for oysters. The shrimp were huge and delicious. At roughly fifteen dollars, this came with greens (boiled, with bits of bacon?) and jambalaya (among other choices). Despite having worked all day, I couldn't finish the plate. Everything was tasty, but I would go with the salad over the green beans next time. My dining companions' meals were similar, and their assessments were similar to my own. This restaurant used to have a bar. Well, technically, the bar itself is there, it's just devoid of things one might expect to find in a bar. Like bottles, glasses, and that stuff that you pour from the bottles into glasses... oh yeah! Booze! It seems that Charlie's has lost it's liquor license, although they are working in remedying that situation.

Good food, reasonable prices. Really tasty stuff. I dig the breakfast steak so I was hooked. Shrimp and grits are different and I like them. For the evening I suggest the gumbo and stuffed shrimp.

Low carb diners here. Had some alligator stuffed jalapeño peppers wrapped in bacon. They were so fantastic. Just enough heat balanced with the crispy bacon. The entrees were not particularly delicious, but as good as to be expected. The fact that it is cash only is weird.

Charlie's is fantastic. If you are looking for a meal to be amazing... Try the Craw-Chicken. I always get the chicken grilled but it's just as good fried. Just think how awesome chicken would be ontop of their yummy crawfish pasta... It's like nirvana.

Best Mac & Cheese in da Parish and awesome Veal parm. I was craving Veal Parm w/ Mac & Cheese since i kept hearing about Rocky's reopening. I didn't want to go there but my craving just kept growing, so my wife and i passed by and seen the long line and said screw it. So we decided to go to Charlies since its been awhile, we live in Arabi so its not around the corner. Pulling up and walking in we first thought we had to wait to be seated but sat our self without problem. Our server Betty joe was extremely nice and so helpful. At first glance of the menu it was huge so many different things to choose from it seemed like it took forever to decide what we wanted. We ended up ordering the Special Shrimp and Mirliton casarole, Veal parm, gumbo, corn bread, and cheese fries ( yea odd combo ). When we got the cheese fries it reminded me of Outbacks but lighter, the ranch could have been a little better, but not bad overall. Then we got the Gumbo and Cornbread, i didn't try the gumbo but the wife seemed to like it, and my cornbread was pretty good, i like it sweet but overall pretty good. Then we got the main food, the Veal was done perfect enough to say Screw Rocky's, cost about the same got allot more food. The Shrimp Mirliton was good, a little dry, but good. But damn the Mac & Cheese was freakin awesome my wife which normally doesn't eat restaurant mac & cheese was tearing up i had to fight her off it so i could have some. I wished i ordered more to go. We got what we paid for and was well worth it. I would drive out of my way from Arabi to go here. Only downsides were the Cash only and not closer to my house lol. Can't wait to go back and try something else.

Had the crawfish pasta, it was great. Only reason I didn't give them a five is because it took forever to get our order. I think we waited for like 45 minutes.

Excellent home style comfort Louisiana style food. Red beans and rice, gumbo. Huge menu, huge portions and cheap beer. 5 stars On a return trip.. There was a hair in the food and waitress had attitude about fixing it. Ugh. Star demotion.

So good. My husband had the gator poppers then the bacon wrapped shrimp. They were amazing. The mashed potatoes with gravy was addictive. I would have like to try everything on the huge menu!

Wholly cow. This was totally worth the stop during a work trip to Chalmette. In fact, I've told my husband that we're going to make a trip out to St. Bernard just so he can indulge in the glorious-ness that is Charlie's. The menu is everything a southerner/New Orleanian/person could want. It's HUGE. Every classic southern dish you could imagine - and if I remember correctly, a whole page on the menu was dedicated to different styles of baked potatoes. The food was actually really good too - we started with alligator jalepeno poppers, I had the softshelled crab, my co-workers had catfish smothered in crawfish sauce and jambalaya. All of it was amazing. Can't wait to go back! Bring cash! They don't take any cards!

Easily the best restaurant I've ever been to. Anything you choose from the menu is not just ok, it's delicious. Their grits are amazing as are their breakfast omelets. Their poboys are a don't miss kind of thing. Bring cash or checks. They don't so credit cards. Worth the drive from wherever you live.

Great locally owned restaurant. Food and service was great. Crawfish sauce was the best! Best Cajun/creole I have had in a long time. Definitely worth the trip down to the parish! Just make sure you stop at the ATM on the way.

They have some of the best gumbo, and roast beef in the metro area; that includes ya mama's house! The staff is friendly too. I am lucky I live within 25 minutes of this place.

Me, my wife, and my 7-year-old daughter decided to go to Charlie's for lunch after we left the Bicentennial celebration of the Battle of New Orleans in Chalmette. We had never been, but went to it on recommendation. We got there and were seated immediately. The restaurant was what we expected in appearance. It was your basic neighborhood seafood restaurant with a few TV's going behind the bar. Our waitress was nice. The menu was huge, which I usually take as a bad sign, because restaurants that try to do more than a handful of things usually can't do any of it well, but we would be surprised in this case. We came for the seafood, not the other stuff. We ordered the BBQ shrimp as an appetizer. My daughter ordered the french toast (she likes having breakfast all day, because she's 7). My wife ordered the stuffed shrimp with mashed potatoes. I ordered the half-and-half shrimp and oysters grilled with baked mac and cheese and green beans. We also got an order of garlic bread. The BBQ shrimp were good and spicy, but not so spicy as to be a problem like you sometimes see with fake cajun restaurants. We sopped up the sauce with the french bread that came with the dish. It was quite good. Not as good as the great Frank Brigtsen's BBQ shrimp, but no one's is. We then got our main dishes. My shrimp and oysters came in a big pile, bigger than I would have expected. It was good, again spicy without being excessively spicy. I especially liked soaking up the juices at the bottom of my plate with my garlic bread. The mac & cheese was a better-than-usual variety, baked and not slathered in liquid-y cheese. My green beans were OK, but not a standout. (For standout green beans, try Harrington's in Baton Rouge). I tried my daughter's french toast. It was, if anything, perhaps too heavy in cinnamon, but she absolutely loved it. It was fine, and certainly kept the 7-year-old occupied while the adults ate good seafood. As usual, my wife ended up with the very best dish, which was the stuffed-and-fried shrimp. She loved it, and I can confirm that it was delicious because I got a bite or two of it. Seriously, you should order this. She also said her mashed potatoes were particularly good, but I didn't get a chance at them. The service was outstanding. Everything was good and some things were very good. Downsides? It was kind of pricey. Our meal came out to about $65 before tip. Of course, we ordered a lot of seafood, and you expect seafood to be a little pricey. Also, it is cash only. Be forewarned. If you want to call overly large portions a downside, then that was a downside too. The adults could not finish everything we ordered, which was just an appetizer and two standard mains with standard sides and garlic bread, despite being VERY hungry when we got in for a late lunch after spending all morning outdoors in very cold weather. We definitely never got to dessert. If we hadn't been famished when we walked in we probably would have left almost half of our food uneaten. Maybe they could add "small" varieties of their mains? Suggestions for the restaurant? Not many. How about a variety of syrups for the breakfast foods instead of just plain Log Cabin or whatever brand that was? Maybe comp some bread instead of charging separately for it? Seriously these are small suggestions. Overall we were extremely pleased. They had an ample kids' menu and serving breakfast through lunch was definitely a plus from the child's perspective, and that makes it good for the parents as well. The service was spot-on. Everything was good, and some things were very good. We don't get out to Chalmette very often, but if we did we would definitely be happy to go back.

On your way back from Violet or up from Plaquemines and need a non-fast food fix in da parish? Charlie's is the spot, especially on Sunday when Rocky & Carlos is closed! On our way back from the Los Islenos Christmas celebration, we were those people, Yelping by phone to see if Rocky & Carlos was open (I really wanted some mac n' cheese!) Fortunately, Charlie's came up, and I remembered that I had met the owner several months back when they provided food at an Urban League fundraiser we had attended. Their gumbo was standout and a real motivator to come check out the restaurant itself. Fair warning, in the dark, it can be a little difficult to spot. My left turn was a wee-bit dangerous. That Sunday evening, there were maybe 3 or 4 other diners, mostly families, intently watching the Saints game as were we. The interior is spacious, with a large dining room, bar, and a separate smaller room. The menu is large and reasonably priced, with most items being in the $10-20 range. We ordered: 1. Breaded eggplant with red gravy. I'm used to getting eggplant in sticks but these came in slices, and they were huge! The eggplant was tender although the breading was bland; dipping sauce was a necessity. Large serving sizes would turn out to be a theme. 2. Catfish Almondine. This was not exactly what I expected, but still yummy. Deep-fried catfish rather than sauteed, topped with toasted almonds. The fried catfish was some of the best I've ever had, light and flavorful. French fries were standard but the green beans with bacon were delicious. 3. Veal Swiss - paneed veal covered in gravy and swiss cheese. I didn't love it, probably gravy smothering just doesn't do it for me. The mac n' cheese was awesome though; a nice crust of cheddar over penne pasta and a sticky milky cheese sauce. The side of corn didn't taste like it was from a can either. There are daily specials (red beans on Monday, etc) and catering options. During the meal I counted no less than 5 people come by to pick up takeout orders. CASH ONLY. There's an ATM at the entrance that charges at $2.75 fee.

Every time I come to Charlie's, I always get either the Mac and cheese topped with roast beef gravy, or the crab cakes. Very wonderful food but be warned. You can never finish the food because it's so filling and so plentiful. Located in Violet, LA just about two miles past Paris Road on St. Bernard highway and well worth the drive. At Mardi Gras time, they have the best strawberry-filled king cakes in the parish. I love eating here!!

Great food, must be under new management though. Lately, the food delivery has been slower and slower. Last time I was in there, emphasis on LAST, as I will not be going back, the food took approximately 45 minutes to come out. We were apologized to several times by our waitress, however upon receiving the bill we were not discounted whatsoever. I approached the bar, where one is to pay and asked if the bill might be lowered as it took a long time to receive the food. I was immediately approached in an aggressive manner by the Owner/Manager who informed me that no discount would be given, that I was mistaken as to how long I had waited for my food and that if I did not like that we could step outside. As I told him to back off he continued to provoke me to step outside. I was able to pay the bill with the owner/manager continuing to to provoke me to handle this like a man and step outside. It was ridiculous, I have never been treated so horribly in a restaurant and will not subject myself, my family or my friends to this type of environment ever again.

Betty Joe was the sweetest and an excellent server! The food was very good. Everyone raves about Rocky & Carlos but this place blows them away. The menu is huge- steaks, seafood, ribs, poboys, salads and homestyle dinners. We will be back! By far best food in " da parish"

Ok, I have lived in St. Bernard my whole life and this place might be the best place to eat in the parish. That includes Rocky's. I usually eat here at least once a week. Their garlic bread is the best I've ever had. The cheese fries with roast beef gravy and debris are amazing and something we order every time. The brown gravy is out of this world. I would recommend the BBQ shrimp and the Craw-chicken entree. Both are exceptional. Oh, the veal Swiss is off the charts good as well. Bottom line: you really can't go wrong no matter what you order. The only thing is that they only take cash (but they do have an ATM there).

Decent food at a decent price. They'll load up your plate and offer plenty of free refills on oversized cups of soda, water or tea in exchange for what is ultimately food a little more expensive than it is good. The extensive menu strikes me as more of an unwanted challenge than a bonus. Fun as a trip a bit deeper into da parish or if you happen to be in violet. Service is nothing special but polite and attentive. Earns its three stars and could probably bump up one more with a small nudge towards quality over quantity. Cash only. ATM inside. Low end of $$. Large room, rarely crowded.
