When I am home, I have to stop and get a shrimp basket with homemade onion rings! Their fried chicken is the bomb! Actually anything off the menu is great! I don't eat liver and gizzards but I have heard they were the best thing here. If you are passing through Opelousas, you have to stop.

I definitely got my gumbo fix here. I really enjoyed the rich brown roux which reminded me of my grandmother's. Now I'm not big on fried foods, but my husband is and he raved about the chicken. I did try the fried okra which was delicious. Everything was freshly prepared and seasoned well. Oh...and the lemonade....de-lish. Looks like this will be a frequent stop when passing through.

Mama's is a little fast food joint that fries up some delicious treats. Quick friendly counter service. The shrimp po boy boasted 10 medium sized, perfectly fried shrimp with some lettuce and ripe red tomato. If you know me you know I swoon over super ripe tomato. These weren't quite head over heels worthy but for a fast food joint my knees definitely buckled a little. The bread was a soft, Hawaiian type roll bread with sweetness. I prefer a perfectly done baguette instead but this sweet soft roll worked just fine. Good seasoning on the fried batter. Now I couldn't let the fried chicken off the hook, so I grabbed a two piece combo also. Yes I was on fat-ass vacation mode. Chicken came out piping, fried chicken burn your mouth nuclear hot. I let it cool while I polished off my po boy and by the time I got back to it the chicken was just about perfect. Juicy chicken with crispy, nicely seasoned batter. In fairness at this point in the meal I meekly gave up on the chicken cause I was too full. Next time I would pick one or the other. Oh...soft, dense buttery biscuits are good too, and the red beans and rice was just like my mom learned to make it while she lived in New Orleans! So I'm rounding up from 4 to 5 cause this was Opelousas not NYC, although the one negative I took with me was their damn bathroom soap smell which smelled like old lady overly flowery perfume and annoyed me all the way on the drive to New Orleans. Still, I'll take those old-lady bosomy-smelling hands anyday for some of Mama's fry-cooks' delicious stuff whenever I'm cutting through on 190.

What can I say that the other reviewers haven't already said. Finding good fried chicken is a quest in the land of gumbo and po'boys. This place is a mecca for fried chicken and well worth the trip. I stumbled across this little gem after driving through the toughest rain storm of my life. The streets of this little town were flooded and I needed something to eat. I came in here with my son and the people were SO nice. The fried chicken was amazing. I ordered the 3 piece and it was so much I couldn't finish it. I saw people ordering huge boxes and platters of fried chicken and biscuits. The lemonade is pretty good. They had just added fried dough back on the menu and my son got a treat of a fried dough pinwheel with powdered sugar. It really made our day complete. They also have a small collection of one arm bandits in the restaurant, was a bit odd, but added to the experience. This goes on my list of places to go for good fried chicken in Louisiana.

I love food from Louisiana! I don't know what it is but it never disappoints me! Every time I go to Louisiana to visit my grandma and relatives, I always make it a point to visit Mama's Fried Chicken! The prices are more than reasonable and the food tastes just like "mama made it"! The last time I was there, I ordered the good ole' 2 piece with dirty rice....Can you say YUM??? As much as I love Popeyes, I have to admit that Mama's has got them beat! My brother ordered the fried catfish basket and seasoned fries (that I kept sneaking off of his plate when he wasn't looking!) Mama's is great so if you're ever in Opelousas, LA or passing through and you want some good southern fried chicken, check them out! You won't be disappointed!

Yes I gave five stars because for a tiny place in Opelousas of all places, it is the best shrimp poboy ever. I've always only gotten the poboy even though it has fried chicken in the name. I used to Dj across the street and had to have it every time. Today for the first time I said I'm going to add a piece of chicken as my side for my poboy. Can not not have it. Let me tell you juicy and perfect spice. What a great place, wish it was closer to Lafayette. Super good. Enjoy!

I must say this is the best fried chicken I have ever had! Very tasty and just the right amount of spices... I'm not sure what the process is but it done right all the way from the marinade to the fryer... Service is always friendly and the food is always hot! It's a personal top spot of me and the wife when your looking for some great fried chicken and cold sweet fresh lemonade!

Best fried chicken ever and their biscuits...OMG! The food is always fresh and the place stays pretty busy! If you're passing through this town make sure to stop by this place, you won't be disappointed!

Their fried chicken is in my all-time top 3 fried chicken spots. The chicken is juicy and nicely seasoned. Their sides are wonderful too especially their seasoned fries. I have stated before that if I ever moved to a small country city it would be to a place like St. Francisville LA or Opelousas LA. The lifestyle here is so laid-back and peaceful. The same can be said for the staff at Mama's. They are laid-back and treat you like you've been friends for years. The exterior looks like your typical fast-food joint on the outside but the customer service is definitely not what you get at most fast-food restaurants. Look for the big MAMA's sign. You can't miss it.

Whenever I'm in Opelousas it's a must I pay a visit to get a seafood trio. It's always hot and fresh. And the homemade tauter sauce is essential

So good! Loved their fried chicken, I ordered mine with the fried pickles. Best fried pickles I've ever had. Nice thin pickle chips breaded and seasoned, perfectly fried. I can't wait to get back out here again!

I hate when I find these places. Now when I head north at the end of the week, I will never be able to satisfy my fried chicken craving. KFC was crappy enough, but now that I know how good it can be... Got the fried dark meat chicken, rice dressing (dirty rice to some), tried the mashed and gravy (real potatoes I believe), the best damn biscuit I've had this trip (glad I grabbed another for breakfast, if it lasts), and lemonade (just like the stuff at fairs). Everything was so good, I will be sure to stop back if I am ever in the area.

Super tasty!! Stopped here on the way to New Orleans. Tender and juicy chicken with the perfect amount of spice, and melt in your mouth biscuits. Pretty much everything fried that you can think of! I was excited about the fried pickles - pretty good. Onion rings are good also.

Had to check out this place as a lunch stop on our road trip to Baton Rouge ! It was awesome! We had chicken strips with dirty rice, red beans and rice and Shrimp po-boy! Everything was really good! The shrimp were fried perfectly and dressed on a nice soft po-boy roll. The chicken was moist and had a great flavor with a little kick with great sauce. Both the dirty rice and red beans were seasoned just right! We also got some biscuits on the side- big and fluffy! Definitely worth a stop and easy to find right off I49 and 190 HWY. the is even a gas station next door!

What an amazing surprise. None of us knew what to expect but what we ate was spot hitting delicious. Fried chicken all around! And of course fried pickles, coleslaw, and onion rings. Gosh darn were those some good side to complement that crispy and moist chicken. I even ventured to have the gumbo that was spot on. This is way more than the fast food looking exterior it eludes. Definitely a go to eatery in this town.

Their chicken is not bad. Pretty spicy if that's your thing (which if you live in Louisiana it should) ... but my favorite thing here is their rice dressing... If you haven't tried it yet, you haven't lived!!!

We stopped here on a vacation drive from FL back home to TX and were very glad we did. We caught a bit of the local flavor of Opelousas (an added bonus I could probably do without) and had some of the best fried chicken I've had in a long time. The fries and fried okra are awesome and dusted with a spicy powder that may contain an addictive chemical of some sort. The worst part is trying to eat everything while it's all still so hot... you won't want to wait. A "plate" (i.e. 3 pieces of chicken and a side) comes in a brown paper bag with a tray to hold a copious amount of a fried side along with a buttery / greasy / yummy biscuit that probably weighs about 1/2 a pound. Not for dieters, not for snobs, not for those afraid to mix and mingle with the locals... but you should go!

Mama's fried chicken is the best. Not only do they have exceptional fried chicken and other delicacies from the region (I am particularly a fan of their dirty rice and the potato salad) but Mama's is certainly a reliable go-to place for a special event or party. Friends coming for the game? Birthday party? Holidays coming? Call Mama's and they will take care of the food. I actually had them cater my wedding reception and couldn't have hoped for more. They were even willing to make some special items that aren't on their regular menu like jambalaya and seafood pasta. Ryan was extremely helpful and they went out of their way to honor my requests (no relish in the chicken salad please...) The folks at Mama's can cook - not matter what it is! Their fish and seafood are as good as the chicken if not better at times...Anyone new to the region should stop in and try Mama's - this isn't just fast food - this is flavor from a true Cajun family!
