I can't believe how short my initial review was! There are more things than I can count that I miss about NOLA. Loose drinking laws, City Park, loose drinking laws in City Park. But right at the top of the list has to be Fillipo's. When we lived in NOLA, I was essentially a professional eater. Maybe even some kind of monster tearing through the city eating everything I could at as many new places as I could. Believe you me, I got around. However, I always came back to Fillipo's. I've been here for basically every major holiday/milestone imaginable. Birthdays, anniversaries, graduation, New Years, Wednesday's and even immediately after a hurricane. Why? Because Fillipo's is my favorite restaurant ever. Period. First off, the food is fantastic. I dream about their eggplant parmigiana. They also have this flash fried trout with crab and a butter sauce sometimes as a special, God help you if you get between me and that. Even their bread and salad can't be beat. The portions are good do if you manage to control yourself you can score a second meal off of it. Or more likely, you'll eat it when you get home, after the car ride cleared some space. The service is very friendly, the atmosphere works for a date night or a gathering of a few friends. They even have a room upstairs if you have a big group. The chef will frequently make the rounds and clearly cares. I just love it here. Truly, I can't recommend this place enough.

Overpriced and poor wine choose choices. I think it was the servers first night ever working in a restaurant (at least I want believe it was). Asked for a substitute and was told no subs. Bread was the best part of the meal and it was store bought. Main course came out cold, over cooked, and not as ordered. I would have been better off going to Winn Dixie and getting a Michelina's eggplant parm TV dinner for $2.99 and cooking it in the hotel microwave. Worst restaurant I've ever been to in NOLA by far. You'll get a much better meal and service at City Diner. I come to town a few times a year for work and fun and stay in a nearby hotel Don't waste your money.

The food was good. It was a Tuesday night and they had a full house. I am not sure if this is the normal or not, but the service was slow. Our actual server did not take any of our orders. Drinks, appetizer, main, etc. the hostess/front of house person did most of the work. We found out that the bread is not made in house. It is made at a bakery. The downfall was that it seemed like the break had been frozen or refrigerated and thrown in the microwave. Overall, I would try them again on a night they did. It seem as busy. Maybe the service would be better.

Went here last night with a friend. Got sat down pretty quickly. The waiter came over told us the specials. We got the crab claws for $12.95. They came on pretty much on a salad plate. Way too small not a lot of them at all. We got served our salads with the appetizer which I would have liked after we finished the appetizer. The table was very crowded. I ordered House Pinot Noir. It tasted very cheap. That's the only wine you can order is house which is $6.50 or La Crema for $ 11.00 for a glass and the glass is half full. I ordered the Veal with fettuccine alfredo. The veal was perfect. The alfredo sauce was a bit heavy and I had to add salt. I NEVER add salt to anything. My friend got the veal saltimbocca. She seemed to like it. The service was just awful for how many tables are in the restaurant. We got there at 6:15pm and didn't leave til 7:50pm. The man behind me was sitting solo. He had scales in his fish. The same waiter as us said the chef said sorry. I was surprised that was the answer. The couple in front of us had asked for their waitress 2 times and had to get another waiter to get her. They really need to work on this. If I am paying these prices for a nice dinner I expect the service to be equally as good!

This restaurant is just down from my office so I have eaten here for formal lunches, events, casual lunches and even a few dinners. The food has always been consistently good. They have some nice seasonal salads (crab or oyster) that are lovely, good soups and in general find this restaurant relaxing and pleasant, a nice break from the workday.

MUST READ!!! DO NOT EAT HERE!!! To start this is SUPPOSED to be an Italian restaurant but the Italian bread was store bought, heated, and served with a quarter stick of hard butter. Not totally bad but not a good start. Little did we know this was the best part of the meal. We all had veal dishes. Salad came first. Watery lettuce with artificial bacon bits and a nasty vinegar dressing. No seasoning whatsoever. Then our entrees came out. Store bought pasta and veal which was fairly tender but flavorless. My wife ate some of hers but eventually felt ill and threw up numerous times there and has been throwing up since. When we told the waiter that the food was awful he asked, in a LOUD VOICE, "I don't know how to respond to that- WAS THE SERVICE BAD?" Are you kidding me? The food was terrible!!!! My wife is ill!!! We paid the bill and left a $0 tip because it was SO BAD and as we rounded the corner driving away the waiter had the BALLS to come outside looking for us! Looking for a fight when he should have apologized for serving us food that I can only assume he KNOWS is bad. It is a good thing we were already driving away. That would not have ended well. By the way we had our 14 year old daughter with us. Are you kidding me? I think I know good food and this was beyond terrible. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!! This is awful and considering how it ended you definitely want to go elsewhere. I would give ZERO STARS but I can't because Yelp will not allow it.

Had my flight cancelled out of New Orleans On a business trip and ended up at a hotel around the corner so it was convenient. The house salad was excellent with just the right amount of cheese on top. Had the Veal Francesco which was a nice portion well prepared and presented. The wait staff was very attentive as a group not only at my table but throughout. Bread was delicious and homemade. Made me forget I didn't get home.

As a native of California I didn't know what to expect, but the staff (and Chef Filippo himself!!!) made us feel right at home, with great conversation and wonderful service. The seafood gumbo was divine! The breaded oysters appetizer was the best plate of oysters I've ever had, and from what I was told the Bread pudding was among the best my friend has ever had. It was an all around great experience and I would highly recommend this little gem.

The food is amazing at this restaurant! Always delicious!!! In fact I utilize their catering services for my clients (medical sales) & the food always makes an excellent impression with my customers! The chef always goes out of his way to make sure my catering orders exceed my expectations & the delivery is always timely! Highly recommend this restaurant for catering & for a romantic dinner! Best Italian food ever!

Delicious food. Extremely pleasant interior. You will like it even if you have high standards. Classy and cozy. Employees professional and accommodating. Chef personally came out to offer to make my favorite dish from a restaurant in New York. Went above and beyond. Highly recommend.

I was surprised by my experience at Filippos because the reviews here had left me with high expectations. I did not find a beautifully decorated dining room but a simple room with paper table cloths and electrical wires where the crown molding should have been. The chef never made an appearance as some reviews stated although what bothered me more was that our waitress did not make too many appearances herself. There were seven people in our party so maybe that threw her off but we waited for food, drinks, wine--you name it. I ate the veal and found the marinara sauce far too sweet for my taste. It was fresh but too sweet. I would not order it again. An 18% tip was added automatically to our tab, and sadly, it was not deserved. I wonder if automatically adding 18% takes incentive away from the waiters to do their best? I would think it does. I actually question the authenticity of some of the reviews of Filippos here on Yelp. I do not recommend Filippos. I am retired and not from New Orleans or Metairie but spend time here often. I am not associated in any way with any restaurant anywhere. But I love good food and good service.

Fresh bread with mushroom and sun-dried tomato to start. The soup was excellent. A light chicken stock base with the mushroom and SDT playing off one another. I moved on to the eggplant parm for dinner - which is served on a bed of pasta. I have a very high standard on this dish. It was good. Under seasoned and bit lacking in flavor. I also found the eggplant to be cut a little too think for the "doneness". It was a little harder than it should have been. Still good though. Nice space. Wait staff is on top of it and very nice.

Came here for lunch yesterday. I had fried green tomatoes topped with crab meat for the appetiser which was pretty good. I was shocked to find out that it was the same price as my entree! $14.95 for three fried green tomatoes and some lump crab meat on top? Definitely not worth the price! For the entree I order the 'Pollo' pasta which was just chicken with spaghetti. It was seasoned well however it was swimming in butter, I was pretty shocked at first and hoped it was some kind of sauce but after dripping some on the paper table cover I could tell it really was just melted butter. The portion was big and all the butter put me off. None the less I asked for it to be boxed up to take away, I even asked the waiter to drain off all the butter however when I left the box was leaking and went all over my hand. urg. The service was pretty terrible too, everyone seemed less than interested in their job. A chef was out of the kitchen about 3-4 times not doing much and didn't ask anyone how their food was. It would have been ok if it was busy but there was only 4 people in the entire restaurant. The waiters did not once ask how my food was, this is BASIC protocol for restaurant customer service! Between the price of the appetiser, the bad customer service and pasta swimming in butter I'm not surprised the place was almost empty for lunch. I won't even go into how dreary the decor is.

Small and off the beaten path, it was a pleasant surprise to find this homey Italian restaurant. Veal piccata was decent, and it is conveniently located within a few blocks of three major brand business travel hotels.

Great calamari and the special Veal Chop was excellent. House salad dressing is a must.

Very good service, nice ambiance, its semi-fancy, not pretentious. Appetizer: Very good fried green tomatoes topped with crab meat; but a little expensive for the size of the dish Entree: lasagna was very tasty; veal parmigiana, tasty as well. The only problem is that both of these dishes tasted EXACTLY the same (minus the veal). They need to add variety and creativity if all the marinara-containing dishes are equally seasoned. Dessert: bread pudding: a little on the sweet side but very good Other: Delicious warm bread. The owner walks around making sure everyone is satisfied with their food.

I've eaten lunch here several times but haven't been inspired to sample their dinner yet. The food and service are good but this is one of my least favorite Italian restaurants in the area. It might be better at dinner but for lunch the food just doesn't make me as happy as other Italian places. The servers have always been pleasant and they play some fun old school music. Overall for the price there are many places I would rather eat but this place is near my office and will suffice if I'm in a hurry.

Definitely not my kind of lunch spot, but the food was good. If i ever go back, it will be for dinner. 90% of the menu is heavy (pastas and cream sauces) to a point where i ordered a filet for lunch. I just dont do pasta for lunch. Another interesting note, i have never been into a darker space for lunch. Oh, and the shape of the place is super small, but very quaint and intimate. One of the guys in my party got the speckled trout and said there was no way it was speckled trout, but delicious none the less. He then went on to say that he believed this lunch to be better than the one last week at Herbsaint. The bread was great, each plate was clobbered with butter, and the veggies were awesome....must have been the butter. It seems to me like this would be a good date spot. Side note: I thought our waiter was going to faint due to anxiety.

I've eaten at Ristorante Filippo twice now. This time, it was a last minute thing...attempt to squeeze one last good meal before leaving NOLA. The location and appearance of this restaurant is quite unassuming...it's easy to miss if you don't know where it is. But once inside, you're greeted with very nice, classy decor. Owner/chef Philip is also an interior designer as I was told, and he does a good job here with that knowledge/talent...it's comfy, warm, personal, and not too stuffy...great place for dates. Unfortunately, they don't have a website yet...so I do not remember the names of the items we ordered. For the starters we had the fried green tomatoes with crab meat, and this baked oyster melt/dip thing. Both were excellent. The fried green tomato slices were covered with mildly seasoned lump crab meat...we squeezed some lemon juice over the whole thing and chomped away...could hardly believe how good it was. The baked oyster melt thing was good also; however it is definitely heavy and rich...you'll have to share this with a friend. Salad was fresh and tasty. I was in the mood for something in red sauce so I ordered eggplant parmigiana...I asked our waitress if shrimp could be added to the dish even though that was not an option in the menu...chef Philip was able to accommodate and the entree was fabulous! The marinara sauce was slightly sweet, fresh tasting...and the big ass shrimp were grilled just perfect...not too hard and not too soft, and IMHO, complimented the eggplant quite well. Tanja had a risotto dish which she said was very good too. For dessert, we had bread pudding and tiramisu. Both were excellent; the rum sauce over the bread pudding was one of the best I've had. Overall, this was a superb dinning experience. It would have been easy to to enjoy a good 2 hours there for our lunch, but I only had 1 hour before I had to be at the airport. The service was great (thanks, Stacey) Chef Philip came out and greeted us by our table. Food was delicious...good healthy portion; I couldn't finish all of my dish; Tanja had some left over to take home. Price was reasonable for a higher end Italian restaurant such as this. Will definitely return.

Enjoyed the quaint ,intimate atmosphere. The staff was friendly and the owner/Chef was present mingling among the guests. The fried green tomato tower was recommended to me and it was fabulous , it came complete with a tree of Marjoram or Thyme? A fresh herb of some kind that I stripped some pieces off of and sprinkled on my speckled trout entree, that I wish I knew was going to be battered or heavily breaded and fried, that's the only thing that took away from the rest of the meal. I had the Tiramasu for dessert and it is both thumbs up !

I had the osso bucco. It was tender and tasty. It came with a side of spaghetti with an olive oil and garlic sauce and Parmesan cheese. The meal started off with a small house salad. The location makes it easy to get to from 3 different hotels.

I can't remember a time I've had better! I actually made noises while consuming - a little embarrassing. The Spedzel? Pollo (chicken wrapped with prosciutto, pine nuts, tomatoes and rolled in Italian bread crumbs) served with angel hair was out of this world. The staff was attentive. The atmosphere cozy and comfortable.

The fried green tomatoes with lump crabmeat was exceptional! Crispy, crusted tangy tomatoes paired with sweet crab...more please! The appetizer is a perfect size for sharing or alone with a salad. Warm bread but...ice cold butter. Seriously?? The shrimp gamberi was perfectly prepared with a garlic cream sauce. The shrimp were succulent and juicy (tail on) and the sauce was quite flavorful and rich. Although I had white sauce, I was still drawn to a Red wine (La Crema). Still a wonderful pairing due to the richness of the dish. Michelle provided excellent and friendly service! Not a place that seemingly draws a large crowd; it is nestled at the edge of Old Metairie and is perfect for a neighborhood dinner getaway!

Not only was the Italian cuisine delicious, but the service exceptional! We had the chicken parmesean and the chicken alfredo, the portions were great sized and the sauces were delicious. Most of all, there wasn't an employee in the building who wasn't smiling, offering service and just creating a spectacular dining environment. We recommend to anyone living in or visiting New Orleans. Very clean, quaint and worth every penny!!!

Visiting friend in town who took us to this fabulous restaurant. First comment is on our excellent attending waiter Wayne who never left my water glass go empty. Then we had the rollotini (stuffed eggplant with ricotta cheese). OMG it was fantastic! Followed by simple house salad then our entree arrived Rainbow Trout covered in capers with a side spinach squash veggie side sauteed in olive oil and garlic. Yummy! I was very satisfied but we did order a single dessert of chocolate cannoli that was scrumptious and fed all three of us. Very friendly family environment with soft lights and the owner/chef coming out to check that we were happy with our meals. Between the delicious food, warm room and fine service I can only say I didn't live so far away!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
