Deeeeeeeelicious! Im not usually a fan of roast beef but the roast beef po boy was AMAZING. So juicy and flavorful. The seafood platter and crawfish pie were also great. The crust on the crawfish pie was so delicious. The place is hectic and dated and a bit messy, but the food and service are fantastic.

Meatball sandwich with cheese, Roast Beef gravy fries and Italian Salad -Awesome!!! This place has been around a very long time. That in itself underscores that they are doing things right. It's been around for over 20 years. Not much in the atmosphere department, but what it lacks therein is made up in the excellent food fare--very extensive menu. This place won best roast beef po boy one year and I can see why. This, however, I ordered the French fries with the roast beef gravy-which has plenty beef in it-- was awesome. I also order the Italian salad with olives and the meatball po boy with cheese --this is very hard to beat. This is one place I never get bored with, let alone leave disappointed and not full.

New Orleans, Portland Or. and San Francisco have a lot in common. All free spirited and all is where a good restaurant is a curse, because so many great restaurants. I think I could move here just to eat at R&O's. A great neighborhood feely divey place that knocks out killer food. Although I only ate here once, I saw so much food coming out, to the ooo's and ahhhh's of the customers. I just wanted to go from table to table picking at dishes. Service was friendly not fancy. So happy with that. I ordered the Roast Beef Po Boy w/Debris and dressed. Firstly the bread was fantastic. The roast beef was plentiful and rich, rich, rich debris sauce. The whole sandwich filled me up, that dinner that evening was out of the question. So my Roast Beef Po' Boy was at least dietetic to me.

I haven't been here in several years and coming back was almost like discovering a new place. My friends chose this as our meeting pace since they were back in town visiting and remember going here for po-boys back in the day. When they asked if they were still as good as they used to be, I didn't have an answer, but I do now, and the answer is YES. It's still a bit of a dive and hasn't been updated as far as furnishings or design. It still gets crowded, and loud, but that's kind of part of the charm. The food is still excellent and really affordable- perfect for the whole family. I said I wasn't too hungry and ordered the fried eggplant appetizer and have 2 things to say about it- 1. It was a huge order that must be shared, and 2. It was perfectly cooked with the homemade (really, really delicious homemade) Mariana on the side for dipping. It was divine and my friends said the Roast Beef po boy and the R&O PoBoy specials were even better than they remembered.

I would go to R & O's as a young Moe begging for dollars to turn into quarters and play the arcade games in the waiting area. Today I find that nothing has really changed, and they're still chock-full of young'ns and older generations hodge-podging tables with no less than 4 people and as many as 20 with waitresses seamlessly navigating this terrain of this longtime Bucktown establishment. While there seemed to be a ton of people waiting this last time, we were seated within minutes of our arrival. The table is already cluttered with your very own roll of paper towels (1,000% necessary at a joint like this) condiments, butter, saltines and really large waters. If you're starving, my Bucktown trick is to put a little hot sauce in the butter, mix it up, and put it on a saltine. There are never any saltines left by the time the food arrives 'cause of this delicious little trick... We ordered the Italian Toss Salad with olives, 5 pounds of crawfish, and each a po'boy of our own (mine being the Italian Roast Beef, I'm sorry I can't tell you what makes it Italian...). I also ordered their Homemade Bloody Mary at $6.25 that was really just meh, and at a place like this, you should stick to a good ice cold beer. The Italian Toss Salad with Olives ($8.90) is my favorite of everything. It's soggy as hell but delicious. The olives are more of a muffuletta olive salad, not black olives. A large can feed 4...with me enjoying two good servings. The crawfish we find out is around $8.50 a pound, and we almost ordered 10 lbs...Lawd. It's Market Price so just be aware. The size was there, and the flavor was a decent spice, but I don't feel like we got 5 lbs of crawfish served to us and there wasn't much in the way of extra fixins besides a mushroom or two. The crawfish and the po'boys came out nearly on top of each other, and our table is beyond full at this point, like the quarter game where you're just waiting for something to fall off, whether that be the discarded crawfish skeletons or the toss salad plates, or saltine cracker wrappers. I don't think I will be ordering this po'boy again since I'm not a fan of soggy bread, and when the dish arrive, the bottom bread was already in mush mode. I get that it's a debris po'boy so this may be my fault, but it was a hot mess of bread and roast beef debris. The flavor of the meat was also not there for me. I need to switch it up next time. I say next time, because there will undoubtedly be a next time. Regardless of the fact that there was an overwhelming number of babies, our table wasn't cleared of any plates till we left, and I may not order some of the things I got this time; I still like the atmosphere of R & O's. It's got a family vibe that I feel like is so genuine to this place. You know these other patrons probably come once or twice a week with their babies and grandparents, and you all know I love some good people watching. So sue me if I want to make faces at a baby every now and then, or watch some waitress drama when an OG waitress gets caught behind a newb trying to figure out who ordered what from her humongous tray. So some tips for next time: go with a cold beer, maybe wait till the price of crawfish goes down and ask if they could add more fixins if their in the pot, the shrimp remoulade has always been tasty, and maybe get a po'boy that's got a lil' less goin' on juice-wise.

I wasn't all that hungry but was in the area, so I thought I would give it a shot seeing that thrillist named the roast beef po'boy their favorite for New Orleans. Ordered a cup of seafood gumbo and the half portion roast beef, dressed with swiss cheese. Seafood gumbo was excellent and I wished I ordered a bowl instead of the cup. Unfortunately the roast beef was much tougher than I was expecting, so the po'boy experience bordered on awful. This is my first roast beef po'boy this trip, but I can't imagine this is the way it is supposed to be.

I was starving and in the area so I decided to finally give it a go. I've always seen this place's parking lot super packed with a line out the door on weekends so I knew it had to be pretty decent. After all, it is sort of a well-known staple restaurant in the Lakeview/Bucktown area. We got a cup of gumbo, crawfish pie, and a seafood platter with stuffed crab. The gumbo isn't as thick as I personally like it. I like my gumbo with a darker, thicker roux. But as far as taste and flavor was concerned, it was right on target. I like to add a dash of hot sauce to just about anything and everything, but this gumbo certainly didn't need any additives. The crawfish pie was a small little nibble we just had to try out after looking at the previous pictures on yelp. It was very good! Like a flaky little pastry with a crawfish filling. So worth the extra stomach room! The seafood platter was HUGE....and although we got the stuffed crab option instead of the soft shell crab, it was pretty reasonably priced at $18. In fact, it was probably one of the more generously plated seafood platters I have ever had (and I've had a lot). Now, I will say I personally like my seafood sort of more lightly fried and this place does a pretty heavy fry on their seafood. Nevertheless it was very good, well cooked, and you could tell the seafood was super fresh. I definitely want to come back and try out their po-boy sandwiches in the near future. It's definitely a divey sort of family place. The service was good but a little slow. Just remember people "ain't got no where to be" when they come here and feast on giant portions of comfort food...so don't expect any snappy quick food service.

Roast beef po boy was tasty - though very "bouquet brown gravy mix" tasting. Good toasted French bread. Would try meatball sub next time - it looked very good. Shrimp po boy tasted fresh and well seasoned. Fries were a mess - we asked for crispy after having a previous bad experience at this place and fries still came out very mushy. Hushpuppies were delicious. Casual dining.

I give it 3 stars mostly cuz the gumbo was good. And, the service was good. Also, it's a fun, neighborhood kinda place. Fun to go with friends to socialize. That said, the food is not in keeping with NOLA standards. A better choice for this type menu is Mandina's or Fausto's. Onion rings were hot and tasty but too salty (Truth be known, I'd rather salt them myself.) shrimp poboy's bread was hard & dry, like ready for pain perdu hard! The eggplant parm was too salty & overwhelmed by the red sauce, which seemed to disappear somewhere between the plate and my mouth... I feel this joint has potential. People go here, so it definitely has appeal. But, all our dishes had too much salt, and for a Saturday night, bread should never get hard!

One of my top five favorite foods is the oyster po-boy. In my view R&O is hands down the best anywhere. I rent a car when I'm back in New Orleans foremost to get to R&O. By no means is it healthy, but it's sure good. R&O gets the bread just right, as well as the balance of what needs to be in a fully dressed oyster po-boy.

OK... After the best spaghetti and meatballs I've ever had there I'm bumping my review up to 5 stars. Plus it is always a fun dining experience. See my prior review for more details and definitely take a walk along the Lake levee after your meal. You'll need it.

Amazing true gumbo. The place was recommended by my son a senior at Tulane. It's very friendly but a bit divey. It may be called a pizza place but the food is much better than my idea of a NYC pizza place. He strongly recommended their classic po' boy, but since I'm not a fan of roast beef I tried the muffaletta w side of fries, gravy on the side. Excellent & huge. Gravy amazing beefy flavor.

Saw this place on Anthony Bourdain and thought it looked awesome. But it's far afield (outside NOLA city limits) if you're visiting and car-less. We rented bikes, rode up to the NW corner of City Park, then ventured over. There are bike lanes the whole way, but it still felt treacherous. It was, however, totally worth it. We got a pound of boiled crawdads that were sweet with a satisfying heat that didn't overwhelm, and the R&O special roast beef po'boy, which was exactly what we wanted after a long bike ride. Lunch for three was a comically cheap $40 total. Favorite meal from a four-day trip to the city.

Here's the story...I had read Brett Anderson's review of the best roast beef po-boy in Nola. I am born and raised in here and have lived in NYC for the last 9.5 years and was absolutely feening for a RB po-boy. So our plane lands. Our hosts graciously ask "where you wanna go for lunch?" I say..."R&O's for a roast beef po-boy!" We arrive half hour later. It was maybe half full for lunch on a Wednesday. Our waitress was sadly a mess...not rude per se but definitely inattentive. Took 15 minutes to bring out the Barq's. Took 45+ minutes for the po-boys. I don't get it. The po-boy itself: bread was great. The roast beef however was LUKEWARM and not very good. I don't know what Brett Anderson's experience was...but I was disappointed with the service and the food. It is not the R&O's of my memory.

Went here for lunch today with my hubby to be. We were short on time, as he's only allowed an hour for lunch. We picked a table, attempted to flag a waitress down, and finally one came. She gave us our menus, asked for our drink order, then immediately asked what we wanted. We asked for a couple minutes to look at the menu, so she walked away, took another table's drink order, then immediately came back. We asked for a couple more minutes, and had to flag her down three times for her to come back. Strike 1. We ordered the $7 crawfish pie; I stuck my fork in expecting there to be filling. There was filling....at the very bottom. The top was a pocket of air. Strike 2. But, I let that slide, as it was his favorite place for roast beef poboys. We waited for our lunch until he couldn't wait anymore. He asked the waitress if we could pay and just have our food boxed so we could leave. She leaves his card at the table and goes to the kitchen to "check our order" (mind you, it had been over 45 minutes). He has to get back to work, so he left WITHOUT HAVING LUNCH TO EAT and I waited for her to come back. She finally comes back, 5 minutes later, food in hand, smiling. I told her he had to leave to go to work, and asked nicely for boxes. The smile left her face and she not-so-gently put the plates on the table and walked away for boxes. She comes back to the table with 2 small boxes, grabs MY sandwich off of my plate with her bare hands and throws it in a box. Umm, excuse me? I can handle my own food! Then she says one won't be enough for his and storms off to get another. I quickly grabbed his sandwich, and stuffed it in the box. She comes back, I told her I was able to fit it, so she grabs a fist full of pickles from his plate, holds them up to me and says, "Do you want the pickles, too?" Not now that you've put your hands all over them!! Strike 3! I'm sure that's a health code violation or two right there! She took my card to run the bill, $30 for a crawfish pie, half shrimp poboy, and a whole roast beef poboy. Oh, and his diet coke, I had water (which I'm sure they would have charged for if they could have). $30! It took another 10 minutes to get the card back, and she sent another waitress to bring it to me. Strikes 4 and 5. I called when I got home to speak with a manager. The girl who answered made me repeat everything to her twice. She told me the manager/owner wasn't in. On a Friday. At lunchtime. Yeah, okay. Finally, the kitchen manager called. He was nice-ish about it, apologized a couple of times, but said he would have to have the dining room manager call me. Well, here it is, after 10 pm and no call back. Strike 6. Definitely NOT going back, and would highly discourage anyone else from going. Unless, that is, you're okay with your food being touched and picked up by a waitress who deals with dirty cash and dirty dishes all day. Disgusting.

I've been coming to R & O's ever since I was a small child. The food is good, nothing fancy but it is rich and authentic. It is crowded and noisy, but the price is right. The seafood is the real reason I come here, and I miss the seafood gumbo the most when I haven't been home in awhile. The crawfish pie appetizer is delicious but positively small, not sure it was big enough to justify the price. Tonight I was especially impressed with the host, Travis, who was actually taking better care of our table than any of the servers were.

You know why you're here, so cut to the chase. They boast the best roast beef poboy in New Orleans, which puts it in the running for best poboy worldwide. The service was a "C", but that didn't matter because the poboy was as advertised. Do yourself a favor next time you're in New Orleans and leave the French Quarter to try this Metairie treasure.

My buddy, who was born and raised in New Orleans, swears by this place. After visiting, I can definitely see why. R & O's definitely seems like your typical divey family restaurant, but the seafood is definitely a cut above most seafood restaurants. You can also watch the chefs make the pizza from the window looking into the kitchen, which is definitely a good way to keep the kids entertained. The restaurant was quite crowded, even though we got there for a fairly late lunch. That definitely speaks to the restaurant's popularity and the customer loyalty. We ordered the fried shrimp po' boy, and the fried catfish platter with fries. There was plenty of fried shrimp on the sandwich, and the bread was definitely quality as well. The fried catfish was also a substantial portion, and came in large, meaty filets. Heh. Fries were pretty standard, but delicious, and you just gotta have them. I didn't get to try the pizza or the italian dishes, but looking around, everyone seemed very happy with their food, and the dishes looked delicious. Service was generally attentive and pretty chatty too, which made for a "friendly neighborhood" atmosphere. I was surprised at the attentiveness too, because the place was definitely crazy busy. I saw all of the negative publicity that the restaurant was getting from the recent episode of "Mystery Diners" and I have to say I didn't get that vibe at all, so I'm reluctant to think that was real at all. Seems like you'll just have to come and try it out for yourself.

Wonderful restaurant that we visit often. It's not fancy at all, but the food is top-notch. We've had a great time taking out-of-town guests here too for an authentic New Orleans food experience.

We thought that R&O was known for its Seafood and Italian dishes. So we were surprised when we ordered one large pizza with Italian Sausage, Mushrooms and Onions. This was the best pizza we have had in a long time. The sauce was unassuming and it won us over. We don't like sweet or tomatoey tasting. It was delicious. We also ordered a Small Thick Cheese Pizza. It's my daughters favorite. She loved it too. I think we will have be coming back on a regular basis. Yum!

If you go try the BBQ Beef! It is so legit. They also make homemade hushpuppies. This is a real treat in NOLA. They have great onion rings. They place is big and the people are helpful. Lakefront food old school style. Give it a try and your taste buds will thank you.

I ordered onion rings and a shrimp poboy. The overpriced onion rings were a bit too salty and there was a hair batted into one of the rings. When I showed the server, she pick up the order and a few minutes later brought back a new order that seems to be rushed. The better was not sticking to the onions and the it look like it was not cooked as long as the first order. I was disappointed to see the onion rings still on my bill. You would think a comp would be in order here, but no. The shrimp poboy was ok. It was by no means an overstuffed poboy. There were not even enough shrimp to cover the surface of the bread. I was rather disappointed.

R & O's is a good solid family oriented restaurant. The menu is actually extensive, despite being a single double sided sheet. Appetizers, po boys, plate dinners, pizza and specials. It's all here. I love the little crawfish pie when they have it and the boiled shrimp when available is awesome. We also like the po-boys. Generous servings and always good. Recently the place has added a new floor - taking up the time worn carpet. It is a good improvement. Food is always good and if there is ever an issue (rare occasion!) they never hesitate to fix it. It appeals to young and old - you can come here by yourself or with a party of 20. You'll get the same good service every time.

Don't know why this is called a pizza place, this is a fine example of a local New Orleans seafood and poboy joint. We came here last December for the voted "best poboy in New Orleans." For appetizers, we had some gumbo (just average), and I had a stuffed artichoke. The artichoke is steamed then filled with Italian bread crumbs ham and shrimp, olive oil, Parmesan cheese, and oh yeah garlic. This is classic Sicilian New Orleans. It was delicious. Now back to the roast beef poboy. This really can't be called a poboy (and R and O doesn't call it that. They call it a roast beef sandwich) A real poboy is only on New Orleans crusty French bread. R and O uses an Italian roll. The roast beef was tender, but the brown gravy was too brown--way brown. It had a good flavor though. We also got a seafood platter, which was outstanding. For great off the grid local seafood, you must find your way to Bucktown, by Metairie.

I've heard this is the best Roast Beef Po Boy w/gravy in New Orleans... Not the case! Maybe I caught them on a bad day but it tasted like roast beef stew. I've had better at O'Henry's which is a chain restaurant. I will not be going back anytime soon!

Nice local hang out. Pizza, some New Orleans specialties. I has the gumbo (very good), and crawfish pot pie (excellent, and freshly prepared). Very friendly service. Obviously this is where the locals go! Not fancy, nor what I would call "date night". But clearly loved by locals.

The last time I was at R&O's was when the area was still called Bucktown. Prolly early 90s when it was full of yats and wonderful seafood smells. Since moving back home over 3 years ago, I'm still on the hunt for the best roast beef po-boy in town. Of couse, R&O's is usually on the top of everyone's list. So I knew I had to get it to see if it would be as good as my memory's. I didn't want to dine-in the other night and ordered it to go instead. Along with a side of onion rings (go big or go home, right?) Well, it's definitely not the R&Os of year's past. The meat? One word- gross. Looking and smelling like canned dog food, it definitely wasn't appetizing in my Leidenheimer's French bread (seriously, why ruin an excellent base with sub-par meat?!) Since I spent over $8 for the sandwich, I had to take a bite- and promptly tried to give the rest to my two pups. They both gave me a look like "what is this S@$H!" One of them actually sniffed the air contemptuously and turned her back on me the rest of the night! (So they're a little spoiled....) I had to content myself with their onion rings. They were good. But definitely not the price they were asking. For a 6 in. po-boy and onion rings, it was $21 not including tip. Yes, I'm one of those rare people that tip on to go orders. My 10+ years in the service industries ensures that that will not change. And when I was there waiting for my food (20 mins.), I got a chance to observe the environment of the restaurant. Servers were almost rude! They snapped at their tables and definitely didn't have the friendly yatty air I remembered and expected. Soooo glad I got this to go.... Now I know why they were featured on Mystery Diners! And now I can officially scratch them off all my restaurant/po-boy places.

Mediocre at best. Over priced like crazy. Not many options gray aren't fried. Chicken salad doesn't have enough chicken at all. It was soaked in Italian dressing thay tasted like something out of a giant tub.

We had the R&O Special. Roast beef, ham, and Swiss cheese. It was very good and worth a trip out of the French Quarter of you have a minute to travel off the beaten path.

We came here for the roast beef po-boy since Thrill List said it was the best in NOLA. The bread was fantastic, but the flavor was more like pot roast than roast beef. Still good, but a roast beef po boy should taste like ROAST BEEF. Service was excellent once I got passed the receptionist, even though they were very busy at 2 o'clock on Sunday.

Very disapppinted The two stars are mainly for delicious onion rings. The seafood platter was disappointing nothing had a distinct flavor. It all tasted the same. The two young cleanup guys were having fun spraying cleaner on the tables while the dirty ceiling fan sprayed it toward the customers sitting at nearby tables. The fans are dirty & need lightbulbs. It was very tacky to see the staff eating at the bar while waiting tables . Our waitress disappeared after we received pur food. This place needs a good cleaning, cleaner workers, & better food. I think the owner needs to pay attention to what is happening.

Serves a complete choice of New Orleanian favorite seafood and Italian dishes. While most of the menu is fried seafood, there are grilled fish and salad options as well. Everything was prepared and presented well. Service is always attentive, friendly and patient despite all the demands placed on the staff. This place is always packed with local families, and seems to attract large groups. The serving staff works the room efficiently and with a sense of humor. It is noisy, in a fun way, just families and friends having a good time and meeting neighbors. It has been like this for decades. I recommend this place for locals. For tourists, It is off the beaten path, but an experience you'll enjoy. I'd tack eating here onto a walk along Lake Ponchartrain, or City Park. If you seek a quiet, intimate, romantic evening, this is not your place, unless you have Zen-like focus and balance.

Delicious po boys! Saw it on the travel channel, so had to check it out and boy am I happy we did! This was probably one of our favorite meals in NOLA. We tried the R&O special, Roast Beef, Eggplant Po Boys and gravy fries and an Italian Salad. Everything was delicious and filling.

Worst food ever!!! This restaurant was highly recommended and was a huge disappointment! The seafood platter was so salty it was inedible! The artichoke appetizer was nasty! To be fair, sort of, couple with us had spaghetti and it was okay - and said its hard to mess up spaghetti!

Well, I hate to say this: You don't get much for your money here by any stretch. Went to this well-known dive thinking we could get outta there for under $50, instead it cost my husband, me and our 7-year-old over $65 with a modest tip included! And that is without alcoholic beverages. All I was thinking while I ate at this dive is, "We coulda gone to Drago's." The food is OK, but I can tell they skimp a bit on the seafood. My husband's boiled shrimp didn't look like a pound (plus he got only 17 when waitress told him there would be at least 22). So, me thinks some must have fallen off the plate on the way to the table. My baby got a fried oyster child's plate for around $9 and her juice wasn't even included; I think they charged about $2.50 for a cup of juice. And I cannot believe the meatballs and spaghetti entree was almost $12 and did not come with a side salad, vegetable or ANYTHING healthy, just a basket of bread. I had a cup of gumbo to start with. The gumbo I rate the highest of anything we had here because it really had a good taste, but it only had some shrimp and crawfish in it and absolutely NO oysters or crab. So, they should call it "Crawfish and Shrimp" Gumbo, not "Seafood" Gumbo. The waitress was nice, and we were well taken care of. In short, OK food at a VERY high price - skimpy portions, too - and if you don't take nutrition seriously then you won't mind not getting a side salad or veggie with your overpriced entree! I say, "Save your money and go to Drago's!"

I like poboys just as much as the next guy. Here is the thing...they are so simple that it is hard for one poboy shop to completely blow the next out of the water. These are good poboys, dont get me wrong; but anyone who says they can tell a huge difference between the other shops is full of it. (this is based off of people going only to good shops) i really liked this place. no tourists. very cheap. very good. big place cuz it can get busy. i would go back if i was in the area and was craving a poboy

R & O's is a local institution in Bucktown. For a Texan with family all from Louisiana, it is a perfect fit. Where else can I go and be called dawlin and sugar and enjoy a great cup of gumbo, and then order a pizza and not be judged, all in a heavily Saints themed restaurant while country music is playing?????? Its pretty much my graceland. It gets packed and for good reason. Ive had nothing but great service everytime I have been, no matter how busy it gets.

This is the kind of place I'd recommend to visitors in lieu of the hassle & crowds of downtown/uptown restaurants. I don't have anything to say that people before me haven't covered. Family friendly, big menu, great food and really casual atmosphere make this a great go-to on a weekday also! Service is good even when they're slammed.

Weird that it says pizza place because I don't think they serve pizza lol. Best roast beef in town though! Dear lord is it amazing! Their onion rings are beyond yummy. Had their shrimp poboy which was also really good! No place compares to their roast beef poboys!!!!

Went here for the first time a few weeks ago. It was busy, but mostly large parties, so my party of 2 was seated immediately. We wanted an artichoke off of the appetizer menu, but they aren't currently carrying them or tamales. :-( We ordered some fried stuffed peppers that weren't very good (they came cold) and the portion was small. The waitress was inattentive and seemed annoyed. When we asked her about certain items on the menu, she never really replied. The pizza was decent, and the side salads were tiny and over priced. The beers seemed cheap, but they are served in tiny glasses. It was far too expensive for the caliber of food. If you are in town to visit or if you're a local looking to try something new, I would suggest trying something else.

Liked the food, but it took waaaaay too long to come out (40 minutes for sandwiches and fries???). Our waitress was nowhere to be found and never gave us any updates on our food. I know it was Mardi Gras weekend and they had a full house, but it shouldn't have taken that long for such simple orders. I can say nice things about their po'boys and gravy fries though. Pretty unique and very delicious.

BLAND, bland, bland. Fried and greasy. No taste. Wish I went to Pizza Hut. The crackers were better than the pizza.
Don,t know how anyone can eat from here saw a mystery diner that that were on and there was a fat waitress that actually rubbed the hamburger bun on her breast and served it to a customer .I would be concerned what else she has rubbed on her body parts!poboys are average I,ve had better roast beef at many places.

Really great place if your looking for good casual food. Try the R&O special sandwich. It's one of my favorites.

All customers, both NEW and REGULAR, should watch the "Mystery Diners" episode about this show. It's on Food Network and available On Demand until the end of the year. After you see this place KNOWINGLY employees people who rub your food on their naked bodies and then stand around and laugh while you eat it, I don't think any review of this place will get you to eat here. The owners not only KNOW this type of behavior exists, they EXCUSE it because most of the workers are RELATIVES. I kind of feel sorry for Uncle UJ, but as the person on the show said... "You have to have some non-negotiable standards." Obviously Uncle UJ doesn't.

Boisterous and crowded neighborhood place, about as casual as you can get. Really good roast beef poboy that comes dressed the way it should. Crisp and firm bread helps hold the mess together, but expect to use a fork somewhere along the way due to ample filling. You'll see their roast beef poboy sometimes billed as the "best in New Orleans." It's surely in the running, but I do have other places in mind that rate better (Parkway, Tujague's). The tender cuts of beef seemed to be simmered in that sort of powdered McCormick gravy mix you see in the grocery store, and if you've ever spent time in Midwestern diners, you know the flavor and color immediately. But hey, the proof is in the bottom line which must be deep into profit if crowd size is any indication. Expect to wait for a table and then again for food to arrive. If you're with a group of friends and family, this won't matter much to you. Friendly service, fairly attentive. The busboys, however, are positively violent in clearing tables which adds a great deal of unpleasant commotion to the existing din. Upon my return, and yes I'll surely go back, I'll try the scrumptious-looking shrimp salad, prepared in a simple way, as well as the gumbo, which I could see was rich and had a heady aroma discernible from the next table.

In a word, delicious. Cup of gumbo was great, as were the hushpuppies. However, the R & O special, a ham and roast beef w/ swiss po-boy, was beyond excellent. Wash it down with a Barq's longneck, and you got yourself some good eats. BTW, I don't know why everyone keeps complaining about the service; the waitstaff was very prompt and attentive during one of their busier lunch hours.

After reading an article claiming R&Os had the best roast beef po-boy in all of NOLA., I put it to the test. It was very loud and busy during a weekday lunch, but we were seated and served quickly. I asked a couple questions about the menu and the waitress was RUDE. When we asked if they had sweet tea she said no, and explained that its a "hassle" to deal with. "which one is sweet, which one isnt." But back to the roast beef. It was good but I wouldn't agree with BEST in NOLA. I was eyeing some thin crust pizza and that looked amazing. I will have to come back and try it for sure.

examiner.com/article/mys… Would never eat here. I advise that you don't either. Dee-Dee, the waitress, needs to be investigated for harassment and tainting the food. There is a hefty fine somewhere in there and people like her need not work in a restaurant.

I LOVE R and O's...I've been going here for years, and will keep going back. It always struck me as strange it's listing as a pizza place though--the po boys, seafood, and gravy fries are where it's at. I can't reiterate that enough about the fries..the gravy fries are crispy fries smothered in brown debris gravy with chunks of roast beef. Will they shorten your life? Probably. Worth it? Definitely. The one downside to this place is the lack of a bar, which makes it a little difficult to watch a game and a bit awkward to eat alone.

R & O is a laid back New Orleans style restaurant. Located in world famous (not really) Bucktown, R&O is a great place to get some New Orleans style food. We arrived at opening (11 a.m.) and were seated immediately. We had a large party, but this place handle it well. We received very attentive service despite the fact that the restaurant quickly filled up. I started with the seafood gumbo, which was very good with a rich roux. We also sampled the hot tamales, onion rings and crabmeat stuffed jalapenos. These were all good, but the onion rings were very good. I ordered a shrimp plate for my entree. It came loaded with fries and had about ten perfectly fried shrimp. On prior trips I have had their po-boys. They use an Italian style bread which is different from most places, but they are very good. The roast beef is messy and tastes great. This place is definitely worth a trip if you're in the Lakeview/Bucktown area.

New Orleans is my town! Having grown up in southern Louisiana, I know what a good shrimp Po boy should taste like. R & O knows how to make it. The shrimp were huge! I also had the oyster soup which was absolutely gorgeous. It has a very light and creamy consistency with tons of flavor. Too bad I was working or I would've had a couple of beers with my lunch. That would've made my day.

Best roast beef po-boy in New Orleans. Nowhere else comes close, aside from Parkway. Been eating here for 20 years. Seafood is great, shrimp po-boys, gumbo, marinated crab claws, everything. Service tends to be slow as they are ALWAYS busy when I go. If you are going for lunch on a Saturday or dinner on a Friday or Saturday- forget it, you will have a long wait to get seated. I like to go on weeknights because I hate having to wait more than 15 minutes at any restaurant and there are always other good places to go in the NOLA area. Overall great food, and a great place for locals, tourists, or if you want to take an out-of-town guest.

The atmosphere here is very laid back and the place is a family style restaurant. This is a good lunch place and I mostly order to go from here. They have a good selection of po'boys, great fried seafood and the menu seems to have something for everyone. I have tried most of their poboys and they are all very good. Their gumbo is very tasty and flavorful, too. As their name suggests, they have pizza as well. If you are looking for good classic NOLA style food, then try R & O's.

I went in with a party of 27. We called ahead to tell them we were coming and when we got there they did not have our table ready. When we were seated there weren't enough seats and members of our party had to find chairs to use. The food was mediocre but the biggest surprise came with the bill. They added a TWENTY FIVE PERCENT gratuity to our check and because of that I will never be going back.

We came here on a bustling Friday night... three couples and four kids under 3! We got a good table and had a great time. The food was good, the service was good... everything went smoothly. BOTTOM LINE: A great Friday night, family friendly restaurant just off of Lake Pontchartrain.

I want to start this review by saying that R & O has delicious food. Great fried seafood, great boiled seafood. BUT, tonight we went for father's day, and we had some of the worst service ever. Our waitress was very short with us from the start. She got our drinks out in a reasonable time frame, then she went missing for 30 minutes. I actually saw her grab her purse and leave the restaurant. Finally, someone brought us our appetizer pizza, which was pretty tasty. Once again, this review is not about the food, it is about the asshole service. We finally get our food an hour later. We wait another hour for the check, after asking several times. We ask to speak to the manager because the check has 18% gratuity added on. Mind you we were 4 adults and 2 three year old children. The manager, Sheila I think, comes to our table and tells us that if we don't pay the added gratuity she will call the cops to "haul us off". She was rude and hostile. We kindly told her that 2 of our party were 3 year olds, she changed her tune and removed the gratuity. I will NEVER return to R & O, and I suggest that you do not either.

Frozen in time. Which is perfect sometimes. For those times that you want veal parm or a greasy pepperoni pizza, each with too much cheese, with a cold beer in a noisy room, then this might just be your place. Its certainly the sort of place that use to be more common - even rampant - in New Orleans.

Waitstaff is shit show. (This visit they were Loud, obnoxious, not super attentive but we got our food & drinks timely. No check back or bussing of table) BUT THE POBOYS are the BEST. Not a fan of the gumbo (tho I was excited based on other reviews). It tasted like it was a bad batch. Go here for the poboys. THEY ARE DELICIOUS. If you're adventurous try other items.

R&O's is a fabulously unpretentious, family-style New Orleans eatery with a full bar, a few beers on tap, and lots of dining options; po-boys, pizza, salads, and a selection of Italian favorites. The place is covered in holiday and sports related decor, complete with home-made "Who Dat!" signs, and, instead of napkins there are rolls of paper towels on each table; a very casual down-home atmosphere. I recommend the onion rings(they are light and flaky and NOT the pre-fab frozen kind), the Italian tossed salad and the large po-boy of your choice, but only if you have someone to share it with you. Actually that is probably enough food for 3 people. You have been warned.

This place is nostalgic for me. My grandparents used to take me here when we lived in lakeview in the 80's and 90's. Ive returned a couple times and ordered to go food(oyster soup) in the past decade but recently dined in and this is why Im writing this review. Everything was the exact same as I remember...the haphazard decor, menu options ranging from pizza to poboys to Italian dishes and the yatty waitresses. The only thing that changed were the prices. They are comparable to Drago's prices if youre familiar aka expensive. $9 for onion rings? Is the same 3 star food with the funky decor but I'm walking out paying $50 for lunch. No thanks.
(2)
Kim K.
The food here is not bad, but the portions are way too small for the price, especially when it comes to seafood. I can get the same 9 inch soft shelf crab po boy somewhere else for $10.00. The gumbo is all roux and no seafood.

First time here in 20 years, and it's funny what I remembered vs what I got. I ordered a cup of gumbo and a shrimp poboy and two things happened: one, I remembered the gumbo being super spicy and really amazing, and it was just okay. Two, I remembered the poboys just being ok, and it was amazing. Go figure. They make their own desserts and their oreo cheesecake is awesome! After sampling a few different places, this was my favorite poboy I had.

As a member of the r n o family, the foods amazing. I have been eating it since I had teeth and it's still just yummy. DeeDee is not real. She was an actor on a tv show. As part of the mollere family, I would know if this woman was my cousin and or ever worked there. It was tv and should not hold you back from trying the amazing food we serve!

Odd hours, missed being opened by 1/2 hour. Anthony Bourdain reviewed this place so we decided to give it a try. Went next door and had GREAT meal ! We came back the next day and had the Muffeletta and the soft shell crabs. Very very good. I'm glad we came back !

I have heard many good things about this place for years . My personal experience was not very good . We sent for take out , I had a muffaletta , my complaint is that the sandwich was heated with the olive salad on it , every muffaletta I have ever had , has had the olive salad cold , now I know why . I also had a small Italian salad that was drowned in dressing which made all of the vegetables very soggy , maybe its just me and I'm anal , but I was disappointed. I would recommend that anyone ordering a muffaleta order it without the olive salad being toasted with the sandwich

Classic New Orleans place of the type that seems to be harder and harder to find. Extremely simple decor as this place is all about the food. The menu is very comprehensive with something for almost everyone including seafood, poboys, crawfish pie, and Italian food (with good pizza). Maybe because the food is so good and I love to eat so much of it my bill is usually much more at R & O's for lunch than other casual dining places and I spend nearly as much as I would for lunch at Commander's Palace but I'm much more full (and far more sober without the 25 cent martinis!!!). The Italian Roast Beef Poboy is one of my favorites of all time!!! The gumbo is extremely tasty with some of the best flavors of any I've experienced and if you're nice to the waitress she will drown you in gumbo crabs and keep asking if you want more. You also really need to sample the hot tamales (actually sample everything). They have daily lunch specials and so many good things that you can go for a LONG time and keep eating new things. They also have great salads and cold beers so a great place to eat lunch by yourself or go out with a big group and enjoy (also extremely kid friendly).

R & O's Pizza with these toppings: SHRIMP, SOFTSHELL CRAB, FRESH TOMATOS and GARLIC (thin crust). Best pizza I have EVERY had. Shrimp and soft shell crab are fresh, not pre-cooked or fried. This is a very RARE OPPORTUNITY TO EAT SOFTHELL CRABS WITHOUT THEM BEING FRIED and the shrimp are awesome being cooked on the pizza instead of boiled first. You will not see this on the menu but Roland Jr. said "he will cook a pizza any way his customers want it" and this was awesome!. Testimonial from JD.

We have been a regular customer for over 20 years. After the other weekend, we'll won't go back. Food was late & luke warm. When we pointed this out, the manager took no responsibility and then his old man relative (dad?) got involved, the manager stepped away while the old man cursed us out and threaten to call police. Coincidentally, that night their "Mystery Diner" episode came on. First time I saw it, so, now having interfaced with their family, I can see why that the restaurant is in a nose dive. I hope they pull out. I used to like to go there.

Used to be 'The Place' to get seafood. Sadly, it has gone down in quality. I usually dont mind loud restaurants but the noise level in here is unreal. Service is usually poor. Needs an overhaul

The must-have meal on every visit to the City. Fried shrimp, crawfish pies, stuffed peppers. Our faves, though, are the shrimp & roast beef po-boys. Haven't seen the Food Network thing everyone's talking about here. It usually takes a little while to get our food, but nothing unreasonable since it's not pre-fab like the chains. Service has always been great for us.

R&O's was at one time a good restaurant. Their fried seafood had one of the best batters in town, and their marinara sauces tasted fresh and robust, and you could taste the light touch of herbs in the ingredients. I ate there often In the last two years I've been there three times, and I can now say with no reservations that their food is in serious decline. The fried food tastes greasy as though the oil has been used too many times, and the food has sat out after being cooked. The marinara sauces have tasted burned each time I have gone. Now for a place that claims to specialize in pizzas that does not bode well. The pasta was well cooked on one end of my plate, but at the other end it was crunchy. To me this means they're using heat lamps to compensate for being understaffed in the kitchen. The worst part of all is the food took 42 minutes from the time we ordered to the time it was served (this last time), and it cost two adults and a child $37 to eat a 3-plate lunch with water and no appetizers. I simply cannot in good conscience recommend this place to anyone. You will get better food by going to Mandinas or Liuzzas in Mid-City.

I really don't get why this place has such a following. Got here around 1:30 and even the waiting area was packed; ended up waiting around 45 minutes. In my opinion definitely not worth the wait. Service was seriously slow. 52 dollars for lunch for four with an appetizer and cup of gumbo wasn't bad to me so I don't understand the complaints on expense but with better restaurants out there I wouldn't wait that long again fro mediocre food. This "famous" seafood gumbo was bad I mean REALLY bad! I've never sent a dish back before in my life but I just couldn't eat it. The appetizer gravy and cheese fries were pretty decent. Tried the meatball poboy which was pretty good. Didn't care for the spaghetti however. Roast beef poboy which is what we went to try wasn't that good. They serve their poboys on some kind of toasted italian bread or something that I just didn't care for. I just don't like my bread quite that crunchy! I personally had the shrimp poby with roast beef gravy which is my favorite at my usual poboy shop. The shrimp were huge and would have been great if there more of them but there was too much empty space on the bread , the bread was too crunchy and the shrimp were too salty. If I had to go back I'd probably try a fried shrimp plate though!

We went here for my Sister-in-Law's Birthday last weekend. It was decent Americana/ New Orleans homestyle food. I tried the Roast Beef Fries and they were okay - similar to taking the drippings from a po'boy or steak and rubbing your fries in them, but the fries themselves were nothing special. My husband had the most expensive thing you could get - a stuffed crab Parmesan dinner. It was good. I thought it was decent though a bit pricey for dinner. I liked the laid back atmosphere, but it got fairly loud (we sat near the front door and the place was PACKED) I'd say for a place that we went to a few times as a kid, this restaurant has stayed true to it's style and roots even after Katrina, and I appreciate that. But be aware that you would need to get there EARLY if you want to eat on time and don't expect to just "drop in" and eat right away.

Our server was not nice. It is the restaurant's policy that nobody can split their checks, which was dicey with our 7-person group. Speaking of our group, the restaurant tacked on 18% gratuity for our meal, which was, as I stated, served by an unfriendly worker. I had the crab sandwich which was quite good, but for $9 without fries doesn't seem right for the price. For our 7 people the bill was $85. 6 people only got half-sandwiches and no fries for $12. Whaaaat? I wouldn't go again.

The owner Roland of R & O stopped by the track one day and left a roast beef poboy that was shared by me and a co-worker. This was one of the best I ever had, real homemade roast beef tasty with a bread that was divine. So we decided to go back this week and get it at the restaurant, big mistake. The meat was good but dark as if it was cooked days ago and continuously reheated. The bread was not toasted as well as before either. We had onion rings which were onion rings and dessert that was good but over priced. This place stays packed probably because of its seafood but it is definitely not because of its roast beef.

When we lived in New Orleans--we were there from 1995 to 2007--R & O was our favorite place to take out-of-town family and friends for a little taste of local fare and flair. We always thought R & O (in Metairie's Bucktown, on the lakefront) hit the nail on the head on several scores: Most importantly, it served a large line-up of all the New Orleans down-home standards (po-boys of all sorts, gumbo, New Orleans-style red-gravy Italian, etc.), almost all of which were easily better than the average around town. The prices were reasonable. The service was always competent and friendly. The super-casual atmosphere could be loud and almost rowdy, but at the same time completely family-friendly, a combination you find only in New Orleans and a few other places. It can be a bit of a zoo, with the tables crammed tightly together in the overdecorated dining area, the beer flowing freely (at night), everybody seemingly having a good time. Compared to some of the tourist-heavy stand-bys in the Quarter or Uptown, R & O is patronized almost entirely by the natives, so it offers some serious local color. Based on a recent visit, all these qualities still hold true. If R & O's seafood gumbo doesn't rank among the best in town, it's still excellent stuff, bold and satisfying. Same goes for the po-boys: R & O might overcook and/or overbread your shrimp or oysters just slightly, but everything in the sandwich tastes quite fresh, and it comes out hot. Only reason not to go with five stars is that the food, while mostly great, falls just a little short of that. P.S. Don't be tripped up by the name "R & O Pizza Place." I'm not even sure the proprietors use it anymore, and I think the sign on the roof of the barn-like building says simply "R & O Restaurant." And this place serves far more than pizza. That said, the little pizzas aren't too bad by N.O. standards.

Love, love, love this place. This is one of my favorite lunch spots in the city. I love the down to earth, friendly atmosphere. They have all the foods I love: New Orleans food, pasta, and pizza all under one roof!!! So awesome!!! I must say that their pizza sauce has got to be the best in the country (tied with this Greek pizza place in Anchorage, AK)!!!!!!!

Back in the day, a part of the Lake (Ponchartrain) front in New Orleans was called "Bucktown." I'll leave it to you to find out why. Bucktown had bars, restaurants, businesses that catered to the fishing fleet parked on the shore. Today, Bucktown is mostly made up of the Corps of Engineers Levee (now, new and improved!), and a few restaurants have survived. About the only one with a sense of longevity and continuity, is the R&O, which says on the front of the building "Restaurant and Catering" and says on the menu "Pizza Restaurant." Identity crisis? In fact "no," and most people go to R&O for boiled and fried seafood platters, piled high with local goodness - oysters, crawfish, shrimp, crabs, fish. Used to the restaurants here would take the seafood right out of the Lake, but these days, product comes from around the local region. In addition to the seafood, R&O has a complete Italian dinner menu, sandwiches and pizzas, so it's pretty high on the family dining list, with something to please most every one. And since it's an oyster outlet (down here we say "er-ster", tho), there is always an ample supply of saltines on the table to shut up those rugrats. But I go for the pizza. To my tastes, it's one of the best in New Orleans, which is not exactly pizza heaven, despite the large influence of Italians in the region, and a great many excellent Italian restaurants. In fact "pizza" and "dearth" go together here, in my mind. R&O's has a great thin crust, bubbly/chewy on the rim, crispy inside, cooked on a standard gas two-decker, like Blodgett or Baker's Pride (I didn't peek). New Orleans is a great town to get Italian sausage, and the hand-pulled chunks on R&O's pizza are no exception. Excellent texture, seasonings, and cooked to perfection. Real cheese and a mild red sauce (here we call it "red gravy") bind it all together. The cheese melds together so well, that if you attempt to remove a slice immediately after the pizza has been served, that cheese is going to pull away. Wait a minute! The whole experience will go better. During the seven years I lived here, I search uptown, downtown, all around for a good pizza, and R&O became my consistent choice.

The red gravy on my spaghetti and meat ball on their lunch menu was spicy and delicious. There was enough heat that it stayed with me for awhile. Delicious and rich! I ordered a cup of gumbo and it was superb. Rich and brown with a flavorful and delicious seafood flavor. Easily some of the best gumbo ever. Prices for their lunch menu were mostly well under $10. The other folks at our table had lasagna and a roast beef poboy and were as enthusiastic as I was about their meals. I will certainly be back to try more of their menu.

Went on a crowded night following Jazzfest. Although we had to wait an hour it was worth it. As everyone has already commented on, the shrimp po'boys are great and the gumbo is rich and tasty. Heopfully, it will be around for years more.

This is one of my all time favorite Bucktown places. I am back in my hometown, visiting from VA, and R & O's was one of the top "I cannot get back on the plane until I eat there" places. The food is excellent, inexpensive, and real. It was as good as I remembered it. I ordered the shrimp po boy, dressed of course, and a bowl of the gumbo. The gumbo was sublime. I have eaten gumbo in 4 other places in the last 3 days - yes, I am a junkie - and R & Os was the best. Great dark roux. Perfect balance of rice to seafood. The shrimp po boy was huge. I couldn't finish it.....until I had it the next morning for breakfast.....cold. And, it was outstanding that way, too. I am thrilled to see this traditional New Orleans place alive and thriving. It will always be on my "must eat there list." R & O's.....how I will miss you when I am back in VA.

i have been going to R & O's restaurant for over 35 years. I will never go back again. Before going there you may want to Google Mystery Diners and watch the clip of hidden cameras. One relative, of the owner, a niece who is extremely overweight actually took the customers Food and rubbed it on her breast before she served the customer. She was fired for this and rehired after the show left. I think the health department needs to be contacted. The fact that the owner would put up with this is unbelievable. It is such a sad day that this once great restaurant has fallen so far.

Would not eat here! On mystery diners they caught a family member rubbing a sandwich bun on her chest because she was angry at the diner. They let her stay as an employee! If they think that is forgivable because it is a family member, what else will they allow to happen? Totally disgusting! She should have been fired immediately!

Watched the episode of Mystery Diners and an employee took a hamburger bun and rubbed it on her breasts. And served it to a guest. It is appalling and disgusting. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. So un-sanitary!!!!

Ok. To PUT this to rest once and for all. The episode of MYSTERY DINERS that was shot AT R N O is fiction. It is a scripted show. The actress who played dee dee "the waitress from hell" is an actress. Her name is Deena Castleberry. You can google her or look her up on IMDB. The place has great food and the real waitresses are friendly. Give it a shot.

Best marinara sauce in town, hands down. I order the Chicken Parmesan almost every time I go, but the roast beef po-boy is also excellent.

Used to love to eat here when I was in high school, but when I returned after a bit neither the food nor the service kept up. The pizza's bland, greasy, and flavorless and the pricing for some of their offerings are off the wall expensive for what they offer in quality. Avoid.

The quinticential N'awlins local "joint." The ambiance is strictly "yat", but what brings the young, old, rich, not so rich, plumber, electrician, doctor, lawyer, etc. here every day is the absolutely fabulous REAL old fashion New Orleans food! There are no others that come close!

This place serves up a great combination of classic New Orleans fare and tasty Italian dishes. The fried oysters are amazing, and I love that they are served with all the fixins' to make-your-own cocktail sauce. But the dish I always order is the stuffed crab parm. I crave this dish all the time. Just writing about it makes me wanna head over there now...

Really fun, great food! We went Friday night along with a whole lot of other people, but R&O handles the crowd with great ease! Tables are close, but people were very friendly. The food is outstanding - super gumbo. We had the shrimp plate - best we've ever tasted, and bread pudding - hot and yummy! We will be back to try more!

Unless Dee-Dee The Demon Waitron is still there or is allowed to return. Otherwise, it's got to be ZERO stars. My rating here is ONLY due to the uncle firing Dee-Dee, the Nasty Niece. I used to live in that area, and I have never seen a waitperson like that horrible woman. If I had witnessed her behavior, NOT including the bun incident, I would have demanded an immediate talk with the owner and manager, even if it had to be over the phone, and even if I had never seen Mystery Diner. Even if I had been able to speak with the owner, I still would have left, food on the table or not (I would have paid for it, however, including a tip, unless my waitress had been Dee-Dee). The uncle seemed hesitant about firing her, which, to me is utterly appalling! People need to read the reviews that address the issue about Dee-Dee, even if she is allegedly no longer working there. She actually contaminated the food of the mystery diner, and that should have merited the uncle removing her, permanently, from the restaurant, for good.

On my visit to the big easy like so many others i was in search of some authentic creole cuisine. I tried this place on a recommendation from a native Louisianan I met while in Alabama, and apparently he had been away from home too long and forgot what good Cajun food was. I ordered a cup of gumbo ($5) and a half shrimp/ half oyster po boy ($12) include tax and tip and your lookin at $20 for a 2 star meal. The gumbo was decent but the oysters were pretty bad, they were filled w a not so tasty green substance that I assume was it's own byproduct and the shrimp could have been from popeye's.

The soft shell crab was tasty and moist. Kind of weird eating an entire crab, body and all, but it was good.. with the exception of the skin that kind of detached from the rest of the crab. THAT was disgusting. My wife (and other members of my party) got burgers, and they were gigantic but otherwise unremarkable. My father-in-law got pizza, which he thought was pretty good. ...Yup.

Wow, after reading through all of these negative reviews, I can honestly say that I am SHOCKED! I go to R&O's all the time. The roast Beef Po-Boy is to die for and hands down the best I've ever had! If you don't like crunchy French bread, then just get it on a bun! Of course that would no longer be considered a po-boy which clearly means you shouldn't write reviews on po-boys period. The seafood gumbo is the closest to my family's recipe I've found and is delicious after adding a little salt. How anyone in their right mind could disagree is beyond me. The only thing I could come up with is that they are not true New Orleanians and are not used to Gumbos and soups being prepared with a rue. The one thing I can agree with, is the super crappy service from one particular server. A young blonde, usually with a pony tail. This girl is NEVER, ever in a good mood. My husband and I took a friend of ours to the restaurant because he'd never been and we wanted him to try it out since all we did was brag about how good the food is. I got a Chicken Parm Po-Boy and unfortunately it was burnt from the chicken crust to the cheese and then finally the bread. It was so burnt, that it had that strong scalded flavor poisoning the taste of the sauce all together. I don't like to complain so I kept turning the sandwich around biting all around it hoping to find a spot that didn't have that nasty scalded flavor but I had no success. When the waitress came back I notified her and she went off on me about, I should have said something sooner and I shouldn't have bitten it more that once if I didn't like it. I then made it clear to her that I wasn't looking for a refund or a credit and she replied even more rudely than before "Good, cuz your not gonna get one" I was humiliated that my friend had to witness this behavior for his first visit. She still works there although, I don't know why because she's bad for business. Whenever I return to the restaurant I particularly ask to not get her mean little ass...

the most amazing gumbo and seafood poboys anywhere in the world! my grandparents lived in nola for 30 years (until Katrina), and now every time i am within 60 miles of new orleans, i must make a visit to r&o's. my favorites are the fish or oyster poboys (dressed, of course), but i can't live without their seafood gumbo! highly, highly recommend!! (since Katrina, they have had limited hours. call or drive by to find out their hours.)

I know everyone has there favorite place to get gumbo: this is mine. Right around the corner from my old place and just as good as I remember it. There is some kind of magic when their seafood hits mayo which hits bread. Good stuff.

i question my judgement going here today, wanted a casual place with some seafood.I hadnt been here in years,we got the BBQ shrimp for an appetizer and it was barbeque sauce, not the usual New Orleans style bbq shrimp, some were cold.My son and I both had the seafood platter, very greasy and the shrimp, fish,ss crab apparently was frozen from the taste or lack of! Dont do it...

Located right in the heart of Bucktown, this is absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in New Orleans. I have been eating here since the early 1980's when it was just a four-top hole-in-the-wall located on the lot next door to where it is now. Now it's a huge restaurant full of New Orleans goodness. This is the only place in town that I know of that uses an Italian-style French Bread. I know there's a name for it but I can't think of it offhand. My faves are the Chisesi's ham & swiss cheese and the Roast Beef. Get the R&O special which is a combo of both. Wow so good. They have good pizza here too but it's not great for take-home because the grease makes it soggy in the refrigerator. Great gumbo and in-season boiled seafood. GREAT for kids because IT'S LOUD!! GREAT for takeout. Weird hours so check ahead of time.

Unpretentious and affordable. Big portions and home-style cooking. I like how family-oriented this place seems and the red and white checkerboard vinyl table covers are the perfect embodiment of this place's aesthetic. Big flat screens if you want to watch the game and lots of seating.

Well another trip to NOLA means another trip to R & O's. Had some of our usual, tamale "balls", which are awesome and QUITE different from anything you get on the west coast that is tamale'ish. This time for an entree I went for pizza ONLY, a first for me. Again, a consistent pie, nice crisp crust, not too greasy, the perfect amount of their tart and spice red sauce and the perfect amount of pepperoni. Should be back in NOLA for Mardi Gras and there will MOST definitely be another trip to R & O's!

Great local place. The barbecue shrimp is so good you just want to sop up the sauce with the bread. I was probably the only non-local person for miles. Place has a nice low key atmosphere with good food and good service. The bloody marys are apparently pretty strong, I was buzzed after one bloody mary. Definitely a place you'd want to go if you're non-local

A friend took me here after showing me where his parent's house used to be before Katrina. This place is big and on a Sunday afternoon it's busy. My friend and I had shrimp po' boys and cups of gumbo. Both of which were excellent. My wife had a half muffaletta which I thought was one of the best in town. I ate some of that too. Eat where the locals eat. It's worth the drive. I think it's only a lunch place so call first.

so here I am in new orleans. finally able to take a few moments to relax and I did my way to r&o for dinner on my last night in town. place is pretty busy for a Thursday night but then again I don know how thursday nights are in this neck of the woods. the place is just what I would imagine it to be: a bit beaten out of the way on my way along the beaten path. square lacquered wooden tables semi logically spaced in rows with ceiling fans spinning along fitting well with the distractions of the chitter chatter of the patrons. forgotten christmas lights, tinsel and saints memorabilia celebrating recent super bowl victory will line up the rest of your field of vision in this incandescently lit hall of an eatery. my table has bottles of crystal hot sauce and that o so familiar mcilhenny co. tabasco sauce. there is of course some parmesan (it's a got pizza in the name) and salt and pepper too. least you think you're in a place for fine dining you'll be reminded this isn't so with a roll of paper towels standing tall on your table. you're here to get your hands messy. I ordered a refreshingly tall and cold coke that came in an ice filled plastic cup... bottomless! I wish this were the case back home. anyway! on to the food. the platter came bigger and larger than i thought. fries line the bottom of the plate. fried oysters on one side. fried shrimp on the other. fried fish in the center and on top? a gloriously batter fried crab. taste one... taste the other... it's hard to distinguish because it's all battered and deep fried. tartar sauce and hot sauce added that extra flavor, but really...really... it's not all that much to celebrate in the meal. you're here to eat and not indulge in the fine dining. it's good, but you'll leave with your esophagus greased and ready to take anything else you want to take down like a slip 'n slide party in your panties. come once... and be done. OH. before i forget, they're charging an extra $3 for soft shell crab.

We went here on a Sunday afternoon in late March. We arrived at 5pm, just as the doors were opening. The 1st thing that caught my eye was the sign declaring "crawfish special". I asked our server about this and she declared that it was 2 pounds of boiled crawfish for $12. I was floored and asked her to repeat the price...2 pounds for twelve dollars. Now, if you're from out of town, you might not know that that is an obscene asking for boiled crawfish...I don't care how good they are. When the season starts early each year, the market price is $5 per pound for boiled crawfish (that's the highest I've EVER seen it, and I've lived here my whole life). Needless to say, we skipped the crawfish. My wife and I split the artichoke heart & lettuce salad. That was VERY good and left me wanting more. My cousin and I split an oyster po-boy. I'd been hearing such good things about this year's crop of oysters, so I was anxious to try them. The sandwich was good. There were a fair amount of oysters, but they weren't seasoned at all in my opinion. I used probably a full tablespoon of Crystal hot sauce to make up for this. My beverages were ice water and a bottle of Barq's rootbeer (can't go wrong with that...yummy). The place feels old, but in a good way. The service was good. Our kids split a pizza too. I tried a slice and was impressed. Overall, we'd probably go back again, but the prices were a little steep in relation to quality (hence, my 3 stars).

The R&O Special is the best po-boy in all of New Orleans. I go back to R&O's every time I visit New Orleans, though sadly I have not been back since before Katrina hit, so I hope R&O's is back to its former glory.

for lunch today, i had a dressed r&o special (found in the sandwich section). they sure didn't skimp on the ham or the roast beef. the ham was perfect, but i found the roast beef a little salty. the restaurant has a nice neighborhood-ish charm to it. the wait staff was pretty prompt and cheerful, even though the place was super packed. definitely good for the money.

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.
Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.
Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

(4)Kate B.
(2)Bob R.
(3)Baldwin L.
(5)Bob L.
OK... After the best spaghetti and meatballs I've ever had there I'm bumping my review up to 5 stars. Plus it is always a fun dining experience. See my prior review for more details and definitely take a walk along the Lake levee after your meal. You'll need it.
(5)Minas C.
(5)Caleb M.

Great seafood and a fun place. The crawfish is amazing and so are the fried oysters are phenomenal. Coldest beers in town!
(4)Charlie N.

(4)Steven B.
(4)Eric J.
(4)Jared W.
Wonderful restaurant that we visit often. It's not fancy at all, but the food is top-notch. We've had a great time taking out-of-town guests here too for an authentic New Orleans food experience.
(5)Vickie M.
Yum!
(5)James W.
If you go try the BBQ Beef! It is so legit. They also make homemade hushpuppies. This is a real treat in NOLA. They have great onion rings. They place is big and the people are helpful. Lakefront food old school style. Give it a try and your taste buds will thank you.
(4)Scott L.
(2)Michele C.

(2)Glenn G.

(2)Mark D.
Mediocre at best. Over priced like crazy. Not many options gray aren't fried. Chicken salad doesn't have enough chicken at all. It was soaked in Italian dressing thay tasted like something out of a giant tub.
(2)Joseph N.
We had the R&O Special. Roast beef, ham, and Swiss cheese. It was very good and worth a trip out of the French Quarter of you have a minute to travel off the beaten path.
(4)Matthias F.
(4)Dee m.
(2)Mark W.
(3)Kaitlyn S.
Best roast beef poboy you will ever eat. I love this place. Been living in New Orleans my whole life and have tried many (not all) roast beef poboys from many different places. This one is still my fav ever.
(5)Amelia R.
Tourist trap. Food is bland. Hours are odd. Building seems like it's about to fall down. There is really nothing special about this place it is the mothers of lake view.
(1)Lisa P.
The crawfish was cold! At 6.21 per pound boiled after Easter they should have come right out of the boil! Fries were soggy.. Not very impressed
(2)Rose M.
Went back with a big group of friends. I had the fried catfish poboy. It was perfection!! Going to put R & O's in my regular rotation. It deserves it!
(4)Puck Michelle B.
Salads are great and the stuffed artichoke is amazing, however the roast beef Po boy (dressed) was seriously lacking.
(3)Francesca D.
(5)Charrie L.
(1)Bonnie B.
(2)John T.
(4)John M.
(4)Maura Z.
(4)Ashley F.
Weird that it says pizza place because I don't think they serve pizza lol. Best roast beef in town though! Dear lord is it amazing! Their onion rings are beyond yummy. Had their shrimp poboy which was also really good! No place compares to their roast beef poboys!!!!
(5)Kelly M.
(2)Brian D.
(2)Haley B.
BLAND, bland, bland. Fried and greasy. No taste. Wish I went to Pizza Hut. The crackers were better than the pizza.
(1)Stan S.
There has been a lot of bad press about this place of late, some bad behavior of the wait staff that got a lot of attention. For more documented info find a show on the Food Network call Mystery Diners, go to season three, titled "All in the Family", pretty shocking. I personally have noted a drop in the quality of the food and in particular some of the old standards like the gumbo have been served with a burned roué. Not sure I can recommend it anymore.
(1)Jerry G.
(1)Matthew B.
Really great place if your looking for good casual food. Try the R&O special sandwich. It's one of my favorites.
(4)Cassandra M.
(1)Steve C.
(3)Danny P.
(5)Tiff D.
(3)Joie P.
examiner.com/article/mys… Would never eat here. I advise that you don't either. Dee-Dee, the waitress, needs to be investigated for harassment and tainting the food. There is a hefty fine somewhere in there and people like her need not work in a restaurant.
(1)Andrew L.
(5)John L. H.
(4)Michael L.
(5)Seth C.
(4)Harrison L.
(4)Wendy G.
(2)Miles S.
girlfriend took me here while visiting new orleans for a wedding - she is a local and loves this place. turns out i loved it too! had the roast beef po boy - amazing! service was a little slow, but what can ya do.
(4)Matt R.
We came here on a bustling Friday night... three couples and four kids under 3! We got a good table and had a great time. The food was good, the service was good... everything went smoothly. BOTTOM LINE: A great Friday night, family friendly restaurant just off of Lake Pontchartrain.
(4)Cord M.
(1)Ryan W.
(4)Rootie M.
(3)Jen B.
(4)Kris A.
No thanks.
(2)Kim K.
The food here is not bad, but the portions are way too small for the price, especially when it comes to seafood. I can get the same 9 inch soft shelf crab po boy somewhere else for $10.00. The gumbo is all roux and no seafood.
(3)David M.
(4)Nicole L.
(5)Chuck S.
Odd hours, missed being opened by 1/2 hour. Anthony Bourdain reviewed this place so we decided to give it a try. Went next door and had GREAT meal ! We came back the next day and had the Muffeletta and the soft shell crabs. Very very good. I'm glad we came back !
(5)Sam P.
Dee dee still works here so if you want your bread rubbed under a over weight ladies sweaty breast then this is your place. I hope this place closes down.
(1)FE504 ..
(2)Shannon S.
(4)Christa D.
(5)bambam f.
Beyond bad! Worse than terrible! Any joint that would knowingly employ workers who rub food on bodies should be condemned. And sued!
(1)Eugene F.
(1)Gene G.
Used to be 'The Place' to get seafood. Sadly, it has gone down in quality. I usually dont mind loud restaurants but the noise level in here is unreal. Service is usually poor. Needs an overhaul
(3)Caleb M.
(5)Reg H.
(1)Kaitlin T.
(2)Elena O.
(3)Jackie M.
Roastbeef po-boy and artichoke heart salad ..... delicious .... A must try ... you have to try the gumbo ....!

Don't give this place low star because of dee dee if we never are there before. That would not be fair. She's a miserable person!

Great simple food. Debris SANDWHICH I can eat all day with extra pickles and crystal hot sauce.... Thanks for the experience.

(1)Bonny D.
Would not eat here! On mystery diners they caught a family member rubbing a sandwich bun on her chest because she was angry at the diner. They let her stay as an employee! If they think that is forgivable because it is a family member, what else will they allow to happen? Totally disgusting! She should have been fired immediately!
(1)Zenella B.
Watched the episode of Mystery Diners and an employee took a hamburger bun and rubbed it on her breasts. And served it to a guest. It is appalling and disgusting. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. So un-sanitary!!!!
(1)The D.
(5)Lois R.
Best marinara sauce in town, hands down. I order the Chicken Parmesan almost every time I go, but the roast beef po-boy is also excellent.
(5)Inquisitor M.
Used to love to eat here when I was in high school, but when I returned after a bit neither the food nor the service kept up. The pizza's bland, greasy, and flavorless and the pricing for some of their offerings are off the wall expensive for what they offer in quality. Avoid.
(2)Joel H.
(5)Molly B.
(4)Ed E.

(2)Chip K.

(5)Greg m.
Fantastic. You have to eat here. Shrimp po-boy is awesome. Sweet potato fries! Thanks to my brother David for showing me this piece of heaven.

great neighborhood restaurant.. awesome po'boys and sweet potato fries!! one of my must eat at places everytime im in town... luckily my aunts house is right down the stree!!
(4)MJ D.
Crispy french fries with brown gravy filled with beef. Fried shrimp poboy dressed. If a bus hits me tonight, I'll die a happy man.
(5)Scott B.
I know everyone has there favorite place to get gumbo: this is mine. Right around the corner from my old place and just as good as I remember it. There is some kind of magic when their seafood hits mayo which hits bread. Good stuff.
(4)susan e.
i question my judgement going here today, wanted a casual place with some seafood.I hadnt been here in years,we got the BBQ shrimp for an appetizer and it was barbeque sauce, not the usual New Orleans style bbq shrimp, some were cold.My son and I both had the seafood platter, very greasy and the shrimp, fish,ss crab apparently was frozen from the taste or lack of!

(5)Glenn F.

(4)Benjamin C.
(4)John H.
(4)Steven L.
so here I am in new orleans. finally able to take a few moments to relax and I did my way to r&o for dinner on my last night in town. place is pretty busy for a Thursday night but then again I don know how thursday nights are in this neck of the woods. the place is just what I would imagine it to be: a bit beaten out of the way on my way along the beaten path. square lacquered wooden tables semi logically spaced in rows with ceiling fans spinning along fitting well with the distractions of the chitter chatter of the patrons. forgotten christmas lights, tinsel and saints memorabilia celebrating recent super bowl victory will line up the rest of your field of vision in this incandescently lit hall of an eatery. my table has bottles of crystal hot sauce and that o so familiar mcilhenny co. tabasco sauce. there is of course some parmesan (it's a got pizza in the name) and salt and pepper too. least you think you're in a place for fine dining you'll be reminded this isn't so with a roll of paper towels standing tall on your table. you're here to get your hands messy.
(3)Katy K.
Good french fry po-boy and cheese fries. I am not a fan of the pizza.
(3)Patrick B.
(3)Bill S.
The R&O Special is the best po-boy in all of New Orleans. I go back to R&O's every time I visit New Orleans, though sadly I have not been back since before Katrina hit, so I hope R&O's is back to its former glory.
(5)Cynthia P.
for lunch today, i had a dressed r&o special (found in the sandwich section). they sure didn't skimp on the ham or the roast beef. the ham was perfect, but i found the roast beef a little salty. the restaurant has a nice neighborhood-ish charm to it. the wait staff was pretty prompt and cheerful, even though the place was super packed. definitely good for the money.
