I love Carreta's even with its flaws. The margaritas (especially the top shelf, which I always order) are HUGE and delicious. The service is fast and the free chips & salsa are great. The food is your standard Tex-Mex and everything I've had there has been quite good. Now for the downside: the place is always busy and parking is horrible. Their lot is too small for how many tables they have. Also, it's always LOUD. Everyone is having a good time (and a few drinks) and things become boisterous. This is not the place to have a quite conversation. It's not real authentic Mexican, but if you want Tex Mex it's s a great place for it. Especially the margaritas.

We ordered take out from the Harahan location on Sunday evening. Upon opening the bag when we get home, two items were missing and the burrito's didn't have beans. We returned to the restaurant to pick up the missing items. They give us the two enchilada's, and instead of remaking the burrito's they give us a small container with beans for us to put on the burrito. By this time the burrito is ice cold. Not to mention, the chile relano was ice cold when originally picked up. The food is pretty good, but the customer service needs a lot of work!

If you like a nice, casual atmosphere with occasional live music, cheap food and good drinks then you should definitely visit this place. It's pretty packed almost every day of the week. Sometimes I wonder if they are giving away money or free food. I hear that people love their margaritas. Did I say love? I meant covet. I mostly come here for lunch since it is close to where I work and by close I mean 30 paces to my right. The lunch specials are $6-8. Personally, I have had much better authentic Mexican food, but I do recommend the nachos, queso blanco, enchiladas verdes, fajitas and Caesar salad.

Never had a bad meal here. Only downside is on latin nights when bar full and there are crowds listening to loud hispanic music and dancing your dining experience might be a bit uncomfortable. Now into our meals. Never made a poor choice and tonight we had chicken chimichanga, chicken enchiladas, flat iron steak. All were wonderfully tasteful. The two chicken dishes we opted for queso sauce instead of regular sauce that come on them. Carettas queso is one of the best and my favorites. Our service is always impeccable and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. We are frequent diners and will continue.

This is a simple Mexican restaurant. Located along Veterans Highway near Causeway, it's a popular family hangout. I went on a Thursday, the day that Dr. Magic performed. He's a lab coat clad magician and entertainer. People seemed to love him. But if you don't have kids then Thursday is not a good day to visit la carreta. The restaurant is very loud. The food is fine by me--I really enjoyed it. I like their salsa and chips that are provided when you sit down. The beans are meh but not awful. Expect to pay around $8-13 for an entree. I LOVE their tacos and order them a la carte as my meal. The margaritas are tasty. It's my top choice for good quality Mex food in nola!!!

Carreta's is certainly one of my favorite spots for Mexican cuisine. They do a great job with their Margaritas and the cheese dip is the best you'll find anywhere in NOLA! I visited on Saturday night as I was waiting for the LSU football game to resume (never happened.. ugh!). We started with a round of Margaritas and some of the Queso dip. You will not find fresher chips anywhere! They are freshly cooked and I find their homemade salsa to be always fresh and consistent. For the entree I had the "Enchiladas Potosinas" which is a flank steak with grilled onions on top of cheese enchiladas. The steak was a little tough, for the price and portion, it was just fine! The enchiladas were fantastic and the guacamole was fresh and well prepared. The only downsides to this place for me are the noise and complete absence of decor. I was also a bit disappointed that just about the Men's room door was a gap where I assume there used to be a window. It's open now... so one can hear EVERYTHING that goes on in there! Regardless, if you want a good, inexpensive and quick meal this is a great option!

I have been to Carreta's a handful of times in the past, and remember the food being better than it was in my last experience. I am happy that they no longer charge $3 for additional chips and salsa after the first one being complimentary. I remember that was one of the big reasons why I stopped going for a while... Lol I ordered the Al pastor tacos plate and my wife had the "steak" burrito (when ordering my wife said carne asada and the server had no idea what it was, kinda odd). Anyway, neither dish was overly impressive, I remember last time I ate here seeing a char on the al pastor like it was cut off a spicket, however this time it was not the case. The margaritas were delicious though, try the patron reposado on the rocks! We will be back because I love Mexican food and this place is authentic enough for me.

I really like Carreta's! Back in the day when I used to roll deep my church group would come in and they were able to wear like 10-15 of us relatively quickly without reservations. Of course I would try to call ahead to see if they could put together a table for us or if it was too busy. First I'll start off with the things I like. Now keep in mind this is Tex Mex food. Basically the version of Mexican food that Americans are used to eating. 1) I love their margaritas! Spoken by someone who doesn't normally drink since I'm such a lightweight. These margaritas are strong and tasty! Remember to specify if you want your margarita on the rocks or blended bc these suckers are strong!! 2) I love their queso! I usually mix a bit of the queso and the salsa together to dip my tortillas in! 3) I normally order their mushroom quesadilla, refried beans and rice. Although I'm a carnivore there are times when I eat out that I don't want to eat meat of they cook their vegetables well! 4) I like the fact that their food comes out quickly! The only negative thing I would say is that like others said it could get really loud in here. But if you're serving strong margaritas and have loud people like me then perhaps that's to be expected! And while I probably don't know what authentic Mexican food tastes like, I would hope that this is as close as it gets. Their chips and salsa always tastes fresh! And the salsa has a kick of spicy cilantro to it which I love. Queso dip is always made to perfection.. I can't stress that enough. So cheesy and warm.. And good. I order something different every time I go here.. Enchiladas, quesadillas, tacos.. All cheesy and delicious. And most-importantly, their margaritasssssss. Oh yeah. I love margaritas. I'm kind of disappointed they discontinued their margaritas by the pitcher.. I love the strawberry and mango frozen margarita as well as their regular one on the rocks. I'm pretty sure I always walk out with a nice buzz, but I'm a lightweight so I speak for myself. Lol Lastly, their service is great. I'm never waiting too long for a water refill or extra plates if needed. Everyone here is friendly and work hard together. Great team they have.

The La Carreta's/Carreta's Grill restaurant brand is hands down one of the best places to go if you're looking for delicious Mexican cuisine. I've been a fan since the first restaurant popped up on the train tracks in Hammond and I've been to most of the additions to this local chain. The food is consistent, fresh and delicious at every location and I've always enjoyed everything I've ordered, food and specialty beverage. The staff is generally pretty friendly and attentive. The service is always great and quick. This specific location can get pretty crowded at times, but the wait time is always reasonable, considering. Things you must order - any margarita, the Tortilla soup, Chili Relleno, guacamole and enchiladas. But as I've mentioned, everything on the menu is great! Also, if you're a fan of chips & salsa (who isn't?), this is one of those spots that you can depend on to offer them as a courtesy and they're usually pretty bottomless. Yes, the salsa is delicious!

Was so hoping the food would be better than just ok. The service was good, the queso was great, even with the slightly stale chips, but like other reviews my food was down right bland and seemed sort of just thrown together. Plate presentation looked nice but the beef enchilada was just a wad of ground beef loosely wrapped in a corn tortilla with enchilada sauce on top that fell apart while attempting to eat it. The burrito was just more ground beef wrapped in a flour tortilla topped with salsa, and the taco just fell apart before I got it to my mouth. Absolutely and unequivocally disappointed in this place. Based on the reviews and past experience from years ago I thought we were in for a treat. We actually drove all the way from downtown to go here after a long day. It wasn't too busy when we first arrived. Service: The waiter started off awesome. He brought my husband a pretty awful Margarita. When we mentioned something about it he said it was just the alcohol so we upgraded. For some reason after that we were charged for both margaritas and not the two for one special. The service went downhill quickly after we complained about the drink. It is always a challenge to go out to eat with a large family but when the waiter is being rude for no reason it makes it more difficult. He stopped by and grabbed all of our drinks for a refill without asking us and then charged us. $15 for soft drinks that we didn't want refilled is pretty ridiculous. I used to be a waitress and I know he was deliberately running up my bill at this point. He continued to ignore us whenever he could. We were there for over an hour before it got busy. We waited for a long time for our check. When we finally flagged him down and it came time for the tip he was a little nicer. Food: We ordered 3 entrees, 2 kids meals, and an appetizer. My husbands plate was hot but his food was lukewarm at best. My cheese enchiladas tasted like they had Kraft cheese slices melted on the inside of them. The shrimp cocktail wAs really good I don't understand what happened with the rest of our food. My kids food was decent. Cost: the kids ate free since it was Thursday. As I stated before our drinks were not 2 for 1 as advertised. The food was garbage, so was the service. My bill was over $70. Don't waste your time or money.

I have been to Carreta's a thousand times, but this time absolutely deserved a review! I came with a surprise birthday table with a reservation of 15, surprise, Carreta's, it turned out to be 25! They promptly sat us and dished out delicious bowls of salsa and chips au gratis. The service was exactly the same as if we had been a table of 2. I decided when I got there I wanted to order my drink separate from the table. I ordered the "large" Sangria. I could've bathed in this XXL margarita glass chock-full of what I assumed to be an entire watermelon. While my buddies went through 3 or 4 beers, I enjoyed my giant Sangria the entire time without it losing its deliciousness. It wasn't cheap but my thirst was ever-quenched. Now for what keeps me from drowning in my own drink...The Carreta's Chees Dip is muy bueno queso, and my go-to is the Enchiladas El Dueno, four grilled chicken enchiladas, sour cream, asadero cheese, tomatillo sauce and cilantro. I usually have some left over for a snack later on, and it comes out faster than Speedy Gonzales can say, "¡Ãndele! ¡Ãndele! ¡Arriba! ¡Arriba!" This is a great place for large groups as well as a quick dinner before a movie. I've made record time, in and out in 20 minutes, so if you're into speed dating, this is your place. It's no frills Mexican, served right real fast.

Rude waitress!!! Her name is Milla. We went here to have a nice relaxing night with some girlfriends. Our waitress was absurdly rude! She argued that we ordered a dish we didn't order. Then wouldn't take it back to the kitchen. When we got the bill she charged us for it and was watching from a distance with arms folded and a nasty look on her face. She proceeded to argue about it and told us that we ate it and she would get charged for it since it was eaten. We didn't even eat it!!!! The manager took it off the ticket and she continued to stare at our entire table with a look of disgust. She even followed our party to the front of the restaurant and stared at us with the same ugly face as we left. Milla needs a major attitude adjustment! We won't be returning to this place!! **Update to my review: Since last night's horrible service, I became very sick to my stomach. So... Food poisoning on top of the rude waitress, Milla. Came here to celebrate my grandmother's birthday with about 15 family members. We had no reservations, but we were seated in about 20 minutes. While we waited a few of us went to the bar and ordered their popular margaritas. Tried the frozen mango one and the regular one on the rocks. They come in small, medium, and HUGE size so pick wisely. These were actually really strong, idk how other people were saying they tasted weak in their reviews. Once seat we all squeezed on the tables and ordered drinks and were given chips and salsa. Their salsa is pretty addicting and so are the chips. My little cousin kept munching away like crazy before the real food actually came. Everyone really liked them as well. For the actual food I ordered the burritos verde. Just a typical burrito, tasty and satisfying, but nothing too amazing. I did like their service and everyone was very friendly. The atmosphere is bright and nice and it was cool to chill with family. This place is going downhill fast. The exterior is starting to fall apart. The service inside is rude and some don't even understand the English language. Go figure. I may have to abandon coming back here after this last trip.
Great food, awesome margaritas, great lunch specials, and everything comes out fast. I had the chicken chimichanga which came with rice and beans and asked for guacamole and sour cream. My least favorite part of the meal was the chimichanga; I thought everything else was more flavorful. The margaritas were super sweet, but delicious, and the queso was awesome but I'd wish for more cheese and less salt. We were in and out in about 40 mins and I was glad that we got to try somewhere other than Velvet Cactus. The only area in which it fails (when compared to VC, anyway) is the atmosphere and ambience. It's painted 3 colors, has nothing on the walls, and looks like a space that you'd rent for a cheap baby shower.

I used to be a huge fan of this place pre-Katrina. Sadly a bad experience at their other location made me weary of visiting this one for a long time. I'm pleased to say we had a great experience. There's something strange about visiting a place as a family man that the last time you visited you were a 23 year old bachelor, oh how our priorities change! This place seems to have grown more into a family establishment, which for us is a great thing. We came on a Friday and it didn't take too long to get a table. There were large tables of families everywhere and the restaurant was a bit noisy. Again depending on your situation this is either a good or a bad thing. Would I come here on a quiet evening out with the wife? Heck no Would I take my wife and over active 4 year old here on nights we don't feel like cooking? YES and YES The prices are very reasonable, they have ginormous Margaritas and the food is excellent.

It's not the most aesthetically-pleasing place (wires coming out of the Sheetrock, unfinished paint), but as long as you aren't planning to stare at the walls, you should be okay! Also, my phone won't let me check in here - which is a bit annoying! Yelp keeps telling me I'm "too far away," while I'm seated in the middle of the restaurant. Not sure what that's about.

Carreta's Grill is a small local chain with two other locations on the North Shore. This place is often a madhouse during weekday lunch hours and is often crowded to capacity. They have a decent menu selection and some good combos that let you sample many of their offerings. Their enchiladas actually have some sauces with distinctive flavors so those are a good choice. They really excel here with keeping you well supplied with complimentary chips and salsa for your entire visit. Its a decently average TexMex place where you get what you pay for and will definitely not leave hungry.

The first few times I went here with my friends I was in love with it, but the more I go back it just seems mediocre to me. I have to say they have the best chips I've ever had in a restaurant. Before you can even finish the basket at your table a fresh pile of newly fried ones are brought out to you. I normally go a little after lunch time hoping the crowd dies down then. They have pretty cheap margarita's from what I can remember. It's been a while since I had one since I'm not much of a drinker. The margarita glasses are a pretty decent size. I think they come out in a pretty big glass unless you tell them otherwise. Their items are fairly affordable in my opinion. I don't have a favorite dish or item here since I tend to try new things each time I go. However they recently renovated this place and revamped the menu. I tried out the Pollo Loco (I think that's how it's spelled) and it was utterly disappointing. The steamed vegetables were anything but steamed. It felt like mush as I was eating it. The chicken was a bit dry and sadly the only way I could eat the chicken was cause of the melted cheese on top. My friends were satisfied with their dishes and the only complaint was that it was too much food. It is heavy food to eat but I think when you find a favorite you'll keep coming back.

Had lunch on a sunday here with the family. Oh how I wanted to love it - how can you not love a mexican grill? Well, lets start by saying that there were not a lot of grilled options on the menu. There was an extensive ala cart menu which I used. On an upside, the 'kids burger' was at least as big as a whopper with an adult size side of fries. All in all, I have a feeling I'll be drug here again, and hope the menu gets better. On a personal note, you may want to avoid if you have sensitive bowels.

I give this restaurant four stars because I am partial to strong margaritas. From time to time, I am willing to admit that the hazy glow of just enough tequila makes me laugh a little louder and smile a little more. My husband, who is the designated driver would give this restaurant a 3. Overall: Standard Mexican fare with great service. I always know what to expect when coming here, and I never leave hungry. Comfort food (and drink) in every sense of the phrase. Large parties welcome. The Service: Hit usually, miss occasionally. In general, the staff works to turn tables with quick and attentive service. I've never gone a full two minutes with an empty chip basket. This is not to say that the staff wants you in and out. I've hung around for hours at a table with friends ordering drinks and talking, and I've never felt rushed in large and small parties. Speaking of which, every time I go to this place there's a large party of 10+ somewhere. If you need such accommodations, this is a good place. Now for the miss part, I get the impression that this business hires family. For example, last time I was there, I ordered my customary margarita on the rocks, and my soft spoken waiter looked at me as if he'd never heard of such a thing. He also disappeared for about 30 minutes mid-meal which was odd. For what its worth, he apologized on return without prompting and looked visibly shaken. I was actually concerned for him. The Food: In general, this is what I have come to expect from Mexican food this side of the border. Most dishes are standard fare. No one dish is truly outstanding, except the tequila which always stands out in my drink and does what I have come to expect it to do. But seriously, the food is budget friendly. I really like the salsa. It's nice and chunky with fresh herbs, especially cilantro (which I love). The cheese dip (queso) appetizer is also a nice splurge, but I'm sad that the smaller portion appetizer size was eliminated. For entrees, the carne asada and fajitas are my go-to dishes. They are good, but be sure to request the guacamole and such. My husband likes the chicken flautas. I think they are too crunchy, but it doesn't bother him.Hhe likes the combination of the sour cream and the cheese. My hubby cannot recommend the burrito supreme. He found that to be underwhelming. The Ambiance: The renovation was definitely worth it, and has added some much needed space. I like the fact that there are two dining areas now. Before, the room would get very loud, and I haven't noticed the noise level as much since the renovation. Also, thank goodness for off street parking, but get there early because the parking fills up fast!

Ok, after a few more meals, I'm bumping it down. The chile relleno wasnt very good. You can choose the stuffing which I really liked, but it turns out, they only put the pepper ontop of the filling you choose. It could fool you, but its not actually stuffed with meat -only cheese. And that cheese is American cheese. American cheese at a mexican restaurant is a no-no. The batter on the pepper was a thick, not crisp, doughy coating. The whole thing certainly didnt taste fresh. Considering they bring the food out within 5 minutes of ordering, I'm sure the pepper is premade, which is why its soggy. You can't premake fried food, once they sit, they arent the same! I wouldnt recommed this dish.

Husband brought me here for a birthday surprise. When we got there & I saw it was Mexican my inner Chica screamed O LAY! The atmosphere is very Artclectic & LOUD. You literally have to scream to hear one another. Tons of booths & tables & an outside seating area which is probably awesome & tons of fun w/ a group for the nicer weather months. It was a Wed. & they were PACKED. The wait was only maybe 15 minutes. The 2 for 1 frozen Margaritas made it worth it. Service was wonderful! Everything was yummy Entree my husband got these fall off & suck the bone ribs, my son (who we believe was also Mexican in his former life) his all time bean & cheese burrito & I HAD to try the Fajitas. It was tons of food that everyone took home a doggy bag & it made great lunch the next day We ordered the Nachos ice cream that I could not try b/c it came w/ cinnamon but look YUMMY. Since my husband & son wiped it out I would say my visual was spot on. The experience was okay.... But I will start off with the fact that we had a table of 14 due to a birthday. But I saw the waiter literally twice once for drinks and once for my food order. I ran out of my water the first 20 mins I was there and then 20 mins later I had to ask someone else to refill my cup. My plate was fairly good I had the tacos al pastor I won't complain about my tacos the guacamole was awful, and the retried beans were awful. The chips were fresh and the salsa tasted like it was held in a plastic container for a long time. That pretty much sums it up for my review and my experience there. I probably won't ever go back, oh and on weds they have a live band playing I don't know what time it starts but it ends @10 I believe so make sure u get there before 7 if u want a table.

My family and I love this restaurant. Its a great place family restaurant or a great place for a date. The staff is very accommodating, the food is consistently good and the margaritas are seductively dangerous! We recently took my daughter to Carretas for her birthday. We had a party of 16, so I called ahead. A table was prepared for us when we walked in the door along with tasty chips and salsa for everyone. The service was perfect. This restaurant has great service and the food comes quickly. If you order an appetizer, you may want to wait a few extra minutes to order your meal as the food comes quickly as well. It is hot, good food. I have eaten here several times, and some of the dishes will have you running to the toilet by the time that you make it home. The queso is delicious and they must put something in it to make it addicting. Just to be on the safe side, make sure you are going someplace after where you feel comfortable spending some time on the toilet depending on what you order. Make sure to order a drink with your meal when they are busy as it will help in dealing with the very noisy children that are eating with their families.

I find the food at Carreta's to be pretty boring. It's your standard tex-mex fare but it definitely use a little more mex in the mix. I've never been wow-ed by the service, it can be pretty slow, even if they're not busy. (Which is the opposite of what I've come to expect from Mexican restaurants.) They seem to be in a constant state of renovations that never really get finished. I think there are better choices for this kind of food.

My favorite place to go for quick, authentic, inexpensive Mexican food. I eat there a minimum of 2 nights a week. My boyfriend and I each get a shredded chicken burrito and an order of shrimp flautas. We always get either the bean dip or cheese dip. I love Carretas!

Honestly I am amazed at my experience because this place is ALWAYS packed. Their chips and salsa and very good but that's where it ended for me. Their fajita meat was insanely salty and other than the salt had no identifiable flavor. Their quesadillas come with literally just the meat and chess, no pico, no tomatoes, no nothing just meat and cheese grilled in between tortillas and slapped on a plate, it was a bit off putting. this offering, again was WAY too salty. Needed a quick dinner before a movie, so we decided to try Carreta. The food and everything came out fast. Complimentary chips and salsa. Nice. However, this place honestly does not impress me. Not sure if I am just not a Mexican food fan, but I did not enjoy much here. -Frozen Margarita : the only thing that was yum. -Appetizer : Popeye - a lightly spinach dip served with chips. Was just OK. I liked the chips though. -Entree : Baja fish tacos - 2 little tortilla tacos served with a spicy sauce. I was hoping to like this dish I ordered, but sadly, it was super bland. Not a kick of flavor. The lime did some justice though. Carne Sada - my date liked it. Me on the other hand, didn't think it was appetizing one bit. The meat, .. the whole thing really.. lacked something.. I probably just don't have the taste buds for Mexican food.

I like the atmosphere, especially the natural light that comes in by the bar tables. The white queso dip is so good i cant stop until theres none left, get the large! I tried it once with the sausage added and I didn't like it at all. The complimentary salsa is really good. They have a decent tequila selection and good sangria. The shrimp chimichangas, burritos and the carne asada are really good. Tacos are ok. Service is always impeccable. Cant wait for cinco de mayo because they always have great entertainment :)

I don't know if it's just this location, or what, but every time I've been here - yeah, I've been here more than once - it sucks. And now I can really say I'm never going again. Literally there is no seasoning on the meat . . . no salt, no pepper, no cumin, no oregano, nada. And the bean dip was ok, but I've had way better. The wait staff is always sketchy in that way you think they're talking about you in Spanish . . . no one is that fake-friendly, and no one calls me "amigo" or "my friend" that much - especially when all you're doing is bringing me iced tea and rice and beans . . . which have no seasoning. It's like they're not trying. It's as if they don't have any other Mexican restaurants around, which they don't. Taco Bell is a few blocks away, but that doesn't constitute food much less a restaurant. Drive a little further and go to Taqueria Corona . . . . more expensive, but you pay for quality.

The first few times I ate here were okay. Nothing spectacular, nothing to write home about, somewhat bland but authentic-ish food. I went back yesterday with a Yelp review in mind, and was pretty disappointed. The chips were nice and hot, but somewhat greasy and a slightly alarming shade of yellow that seems very not-natural. The cheese dip that I recalled so fondly seemed very heavy and thick and not-nearly-as-good-as-I-remembered. I was STOKED to see portabella mushroom fajitas on the menu, though, and knew all was right with the world when I heard the sizzling plate headed to our table. Sadly, all was not right with the world after all. The mushrooms / onions / peppers were practically swimming in grease, so much that I could only stomach two fajitas even though I was really hungry when we went in. The onions and peppers could have been cooked a bit more for my liking as well - I'm a big fan of them ending up super-sweet and caramelized. The rice was okay, the beans were eh, the fixins' were fresh and plentiful. I'm not a huge fan of guacamole though I'm coming around to it, but this version had way too much cilantro for me. Husband, on the other hand, loved it, so your mileage may vary depending on your affinity for the s.tuff. Only three tortillas came with my meal - no way possible I could have gotten all that stuff crammed into those three little tortillas. I boxed up the leftovers with the idea of tossing it all in a skillet and cooking it a little more to my liking, and had the bright idea of tipping the box sideways and seeing if any of the extra grease came out so I didn't have to deal with it later. Man, big mistake. I was pretty appalled (and disgusted) at how much came spilling out of that box and onto my empty plate. Easily three or four tablespoons, not including the little bits of veggie juice that came with it all. Just... ew. I won't be ordering that ever again. :/ Service was just fine, no complaints there. It wasn't very busy when we went in, and there were servers practically coming out of the woodwork when we walked in the front door. The restrooms have been upgraded since I've been last (it's been a WHILE) which was a nice surprise, since they were decidedly unsavory on my last visit -- kudos for that at least. Hopefully this was just a bad day in the kitchen. It will be a WHILE before my stomach-memory allows me to come back and test the theory.

Simply not good, but what was I to expect from a Metarie Tex-Mex joint? A man can dream, can't he? I had the free chips and salsa, a Cuervo margarita on the rocks, and the beef fajitas. You can't really mess up chips and salsa - chips were likely from a bag, but the salsa was tasty. I have a big problem with any "authentic" Tex-Mex or *god forbid* a Mexican restaurant pushing margaritas that are not made from 100% blue agave tequila. Carreta's is pushing super-sweet margaritas made with Jose Cuervo by the boatload. What a shame. Be sure to ask to upgrade to a real tequila if you order a margarita. The beef fajitas tasted like soy sauce. I wasn't expecting Chinese food... Now, I realize soy sauce is a common ingredient in fajita marinade, but it should never be the prevailing flavor in the finished product and man I thought I was at Five Happiness. Disappointing. The service was friendly and everybody appeared to be having a good time - and I can see why. The atmosphere was practically bawdy, as everybody had been hitting the margaritas hard and were having a damn good time. So expect some noise on busy nights. Having visited the Carretas in Hammond, I can verify that this location does not compare favorably. And that's a shame.

I love this place. I'm not a fan of Tex-Mex food, but I love straight up Mexican fare. I mostly order a la carte, have gotten the tacos, burritos, enchiladas and have been very pleased. I like the simplicity of the dishes. Nothing is drowning in sauce. The white cheese that they use is the kicker and what sets this place apart. This is also where my favorite guacamole is served. Straight up avocado, with a fresh slice of tomato, and some light garlic seasoning. Nothing to get in the way of the essence of guacamole. The bar is fully stocked, and I like their margaritas. I'm not a tequila snob, so I am fine with their basic margs. The sangria margarita is my favorite. Yes, it's a very girly drink. You can upgrade to whatever high end tequila you are into. The atmosphere is fine, very family friendly, however, it gets a little loud when there is live music or the magician. By a little loud, I mean it gets really freaking loud. At least the service is super quick, so that if you happen to be at Carreta's during Loud Night, you can get out of there quickly.

I have gone here 4 times and when i first went it was really nice and each time after it seems to get worse. Parking is ok, and the seating is ok, there under construction so i try not to let that effect my experience. The staff is nice and helpful, the chips and salsa come out fast while your waitress is getting your drinks. Chips are good, wife likes the salsa, queso cheese is ok, we got the Popeye dip, and i don't know what to say. Its spinach mixed with there queso sauce so its not bad but not that great, and served with fried wheat chips which i think is wheat tortilla cut up and fried so the texture was a little strange at first. Food was ok, my tamale was a little mushy, but my taco was great, my wife got the fajitas and loved them. she didn't like the Chile relleno but it could have just been her. Enchilada's was good and everything seemed to be ok. I wasn't impressed but wasn't disappointed. Later i my stomach started hurting and i wasn't sure if it was from the food i eat here. I took my leftovers home and didn't eat until the second day and a couple hours later i felt ill again, so i threw everything left away.

Quantity of food is great! Salsa and chips were superb, especially bc they're free. I ordered the shrimp fajitas which were yum, but def Tex Mex food. I also ordered the top shelf margarita and I had to make myself finish it. The pour of alcohol is weak and the sour mix is not fresh squeezed. Not a fan of bottled sour mix! Overall, the service and food was good and I'll probably be back once a year. But, I'll opt for a Negra Modelo instead.

I have been here several times, the salsa and guac are good, the fajitas are greasy and the menu selection is limited to greasy meaty stuff. My boyfriend loves this place. We ate there last night, needless to say, I agree with the guy who said it is not for those with sensitive bowels...I have been miserable all day! The three stars is for the fast service and the fact that the margaritas make the less than desirable food go down better. Also, if you want to talk, don't go here on a thursday, it's the day when the magician comes in so the place is full of kids. No biggie but with the tile floors and stucco walls there is nothing to absorb the noise.

The food is wonderful. The decor is awful. Its loud and voices carry. If your eyes are easily offended and you want to have a quiet conversation do it elsewhere. I lived in Austin for a few years after Katrina and I must say this is the closest comparison that I could find some of my favorite home grown Mexican style restaurants. The food is flavorful not overly spicy. The verde sauce is perfect. The queso is wonderful. The service is alright. I know not every server is on the A team. B team needs shifts too. Enjoy the food and attempt to understand the yellow walls and hot pink trim.

Ohh! I love Carretas! If only I didn't keep getting sick from eating here. Seriously, I love this place. Love the food. The employees, ehh not so much. But what are you going to do? Like any mexican restaraunt, you will get sick. Also, this location has plumbing problems. So you may go in one day and walk right out. No way people want to eat with bathroom smells all the way to the front door. Gross. So go in with an open mind. Love the hot hot chips they serve as you sit down. The meal for two is not bad. Priced well for the amount of food you'd be served. But beware, even though it is a Mexican restaraunt do not be fooled into thinking every entree comes with a side of rice,beans, pico de gallo, sour cream and tortillas. And the lunch menu is kinda pricey.

There's obviously just something about Tex-Mex that often brings out the extremes in people. I think it's the limited palette of the genre, maybe; everyone gets all frenzied when making critical judgements, because it's all about details and personal preference after a certain point. I'm from Austin, where the Yelp entries on various city landmarks of fried/larded wonderfulness are basically a flamewar of alternating accolades and curses. The thing is, those places have to deal with a pretty avid customer base with significant options and experience (and don't even get me started on San Antonio). Caretta's seems to have it pretty easy. I can't quite account for the love of this place otherwise. In short, this is neither authentic nor good Mexican food. Nor is it even good Tex-Mex. Nor is it even cheap. Nor is it atmospheric, fun, or really anything besides a crappy and wasted trip out to Metairie. Before I lived here, gumbo was pretty much chili, but with fewer peppers and more rice. That's kind of what's going on with Carreta's in the Mexican department. FAIL.

This is my girlfriend's favorite restaurant, and for a good reason. The food is insanely delicious. The salsa truly is unbeatable in the NOLA area. Most people get the Carreta's Dip (which is just some sort of Asadero Cheese dip,) but I recommend the Popeye Dip, which comes with amazing wheat chips and spinach and artichokes. Quesadillas are great, as are the fajitas. In the running for best, hearty vegetarian food in New Orleans. Try it!

I love Carreta's even with its flaws. The margaritas (especially the top shelf, which I always order) are HUGE and delicious. The service is fast and the free chips & salsa are great. The food is your standard Tex-Mex and everything I've had there has been quite good. Now for the downside: the place is always busy and parking is horrible. Their lot is too small for how many tables they have. Also, it's always LOUD. Everyone is having a good time (and a few drinks) and things become boisterous. This is not the place to have a quite conversation. It's not real authentic Mexican, but if you want Tex Mex it's s a great place for it. Especially the margaritas.

We ordered take out from the Harahan location on Sunday evening. Upon opening the bag when we get home, two items were missing and the burrito's didn't have beans. We returned to the restaurant to pick up the missing items. They give us the two enchilada's, and instead of remaking the burrito's they give us a small container with beans for us to put on the burrito. By this time the burrito is ice cold. Not to mention, the chile relano was ice cold when originally picked up. The food is pretty good, but the customer service needs a lot of work!

If you like a nice, casual atmosphere with occasional live music, cheap food and good drinks then you should definitely visit this place. It's pretty packed almost every day of the week. Sometimes I wonder if they are giving away money or free food. I hear that people love their margaritas. Did I say love? I meant covet. I mostly come here for lunch since it is close to where I work and by close I mean 30 paces to my right. The lunch specials are $6-8. Personally, I have had much better authentic Mexican food, but I do recommend the nachos, queso blanco, enchiladas verdes, fajitas and Caesar salad.

Never had a bad meal here. Only downside is on latin nights when bar full and there are crowds listening to loud hispanic music and dancing your dining experience might be a bit uncomfortable. Now into our meals. Never made a poor choice and tonight we had chicken chimichanga, chicken enchiladas, flat iron steak. All were wonderfully tasteful. The two chicken dishes we opted for queso sauce instead of regular sauce that come on them. Carettas queso is one of the best and my favorites. Our service is always impeccable and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. We are frequent diners and will continue.

This is a simple Mexican restaurant. Located along Veterans Highway near Causeway, it's a popular family hangout. I went on a Thursday, the day that Dr. Magic performed. He's a lab coat clad magician and entertainer. People seemed to love him. But if you don't have kids then Thursday is not a good day to visit la carreta. The restaurant is very loud. The food is fine by me--I really enjoyed it. I like their salsa and chips that are provided when you sit down. The beans are meh but not awful. Expect to pay around $8-13 for an entree. I LOVE their tacos and order them a la carte as my meal. The margaritas are tasty. It's my top choice for good quality Mex food in nola!!!

TEX MEX DINNER This very clean and efficient restaurant easily accommodated the seven of us. Margaritas kept most of us very happy and relaxed while waiting for our meals to arrive. Carnitas, grilled onions, beans, Pico di gallo, guacamole and corn tortillas. Served piping hot and fresh. Muy delicioso ! Nachos to me were just so-so. I prefer the olde fashion fried corn tortilla type.

Carreta's is certainly one of my favorite spots for Mexican cuisine. They do a great job with their Margaritas and the cheese dip is the best you'll find anywhere in NOLA! I visited on Saturday night as I was waiting for the LSU football game to resume (never happened.. ugh!). We started with a round of Margaritas and some of the Queso dip. You will not find fresher chips anywhere! They are freshly cooked and I find their homemade salsa to be always fresh and consistent. For the entree I had the "Enchiladas Potosinas" which is a flank steak with grilled onions on top of cheese enchiladas. The steak was a little tough, for the price and portion, it was just fine! The enchiladas were fantastic and the guacamole was fresh and well prepared. The only downsides to this place for me are the noise and complete absence of decor. I was also a bit disappointed that just about the Men's room door was a gap where I assume there used to be a window. It's open now... so one can hear EVERYTHING that goes on in there! Regardless, if you want a good, inexpensive and quick meal this is a great option!

I have been to Carreta's a handful of times in the past, and remember the food being better than it was in my last experience. I am happy that they no longer charge $3 for additional chips and salsa after the first one being complimentary. I remember that was one of the big reasons why I stopped going for a while... Lol I ordered the Al pastor tacos plate and my wife had the "steak" burrito (when ordering my wife said carne asada and the server had no idea what it was, kinda odd). Anyway, neither dish was overly impressive, I remember last time I ate here seeing a char on the al pastor like it was cut off a spicket, however this time it was not the case. The margaritas were delicious though, try the patron reposado on the rocks! We will be back because I love Mexican food and this place is authentic enough for me.

I really like Carreta's! Back in the day when I used to roll deep my church group would come in and they were able to wear like 10-15 of us relatively quickly without reservations. Of course I would try to call ahead to see if they could put together a table for us or if it was too busy. First I'll start off with the things I like. Now keep in mind this is Tex Mex food. Basically the version of Mexican food that Americans are used to eating. 1) I love their margaritas! Spoken by someone who doesn't normally drink since I'm such a lightweight. These margaritas are strong and tasty! Remember to specify if you want your margarita on the rocks or blended bc these suckers are strong!! 2) I love their queso! I usually mix a bit of the queso and the salsa together to dip my tortillas in! 3) I normally order their mushroom quesadilla, refried beans and rice. Although I'm a carnivore there are times when I eat out that I don't want to eat meat of they cook their vegetables well! 4) I like the fact that their food comes out quickly! The only negative thing I would say is that like others said it could get really loud in here. But if you're serving strong margaritas and have loud people like me then perhaps that's to be expected! 5 stars for great service, food, and price!! I love Carreta's. Everything about this place is amazing. And while I probably don't know what authentic Mexican food tastes like, I would hope that this is as close as it gets. Their chips and salsa always tastes fresh! And the salsa has a kick of spicy cilantro to it which I love. Queso dip is always made to perfection.. I can't stress that enough. So cheesy and warm.. And good. I order something different every time I go here.. Enchiladas, quesadillas, tacos.. All cheesy and delicious. And most-importantly, their margaritasssssss. Oh yeah. I love margaritas. I'm kind of disappointed they discontinued their margaritas by the pitcher.. I love the strawberry and mango frozen margarita as well as their regular one on the rocks. I'm pretty sure I always walk out with a nice buzz, but I'm a lightweight so I speak for myself. Lol Lastly, their service is great. I'm never waiting too long for a water refill or extra plates if needed. Everyone here is friendly and work hard together. Great team they have.

The La Carreta's/Carreta's Grill restaurant brand is hands down one of the best places to go if you're looking for delicious Mexican cuisine. I've been a fan since the first restaurant popped up on the train tracks in Hammond and I've been to most of the additions to this local chain. The food is consistent, fresh and delicious at every location and I've always enjoyed everything I've ordered, food and specialty beverage. The staff is generally pretty friendly and attentive. The service is always great and quick. This specific location can get pretty crowded at times, but the wait time is always reasonable, considering. Things you must order - any margarita, the Tortilla soup, Chili Relleno, guacamole and enchiladas. But as I've mentioned, everything on the menu is great! Also, if you're a fan of chips & salsa (who isn't?), this is one of those spots that you can depend on to offer them as a courtesy and they're usually pretty bottomless. Yes, the salsa is delicious!

Was so hoping the food would be better than just ok. The service was good, the queso was great, even with the slightly stale chips, but like other reviews my food was down right bland and seemed sort of just thrown together. Plate presentation looked nice but the beef enchilada was just a wad of ground beef loosely wrapped in a corn tortilla with enchilada sauce on top that fell apart while attempting to eat it. The burrito was just more ground beef wrapped in a flour tortilla topped with salsa, and the taco just fell apart before I got it to my mouth. Half way thru the meal it just looked like a ground beef explosion on my plate that had very little flavor....no bueno

Not good. Chips were stale. Food was average and that's being generous. I got a quesadilla and it was dry and no flavor. Rice is disgusting no flavor, beans once again no flavor. My boyfriend did not like his fish either. I do not understand why this parking lot is so full, the food really is not worth it and you can make better tex-mex at home really. Absolutely and unequivocally disappointed in this place. Based on the reviews and past experience from years ago I thought we were in for a treat. We actually drove all the way from downtown to go here after a long day. It wasn't too busy when we first arrived. Service: The waiter started off awesome. He brought my husband a pretty awful Margarita. When we mentioned something about it he said it was just the alcohol so we upgraded. For some reason after that we were charged for both margaritas and not the two for one special. The service went downhill quickly after we complained about the drink. It is always a challenge to go out to eat with a large family but when the waiter is being rude for no reason it makes it more difficult. He stopped by and grabbed all of our drinks for a refill without asking us and then charged us. $15 for soft drinks that we didn't want refilled is pretty ridiculous. I used to be a waitress and I know he was deliberately running up my bill at this point. He continued to ignore us whenever he could. We were there for over an hour before it got busy. We waited for a long time for our check. When we finally flagged him down and it came time for the tip he was a little nicer. Food: We ordered 3 entrees, 2 kids meals, and an appetizer. My husbands plate was hot but his food was lukewarm at best. My cheese enchiladas tasted like they had Kraft cheese slices melted on the inside of them. The shrimp cocktail wAs really good I don't understand what happened with the rest of our food. My kids food was decent. Cost: the kids ate free since it was Thursday. As I stated before our drinks were not 2 for 1 as advertised. The food was garbage, so was the service. My bill was over $70. Don't waste your time or money.

I have been to Carreta's a thousand times, but this time absolutely deserved a review! I came with a surprise birthday table with a reservation of 15, surprise, Carreta's, it turned out to be 25! They promptly sat us and dished out delicious bowls of salsa and chips au gratis. The service was exactly the same as if we had been a table of 2. I decided when I got there I wanted to order my drink separate from the table. I ordered the "large" Sangria. I could've bathed in this XXL margarita glass chock-full of what I assumed to be an entire watermelon. While my buddies went through 3 or 4 beers, I enjoyed my giant Sangria the entire time without it losing its deliciousness. It wasn't cheap but my thirst was ever-quenched. Now for what keeps me from drowning in my own drink...The Carreta's Chees Dip is muy bueno queso, and my go-to is the Enchiladas El Dueno, four grilled chicken enchiladas, sour cream, asadero cheese, tomatillo sauce and cilantro. I usually have some left over for a snack later on, and it comes out faster than Speedy Gonzales can say, "¡Ãndele! ¡Ãndele! ¡Arriba! ¡Arriba!" This is a great place for large groups as well as a quick dinner before a movie. I've made record time, in and out in 20 minutes, so if you're into speed dating, this is your place. It's no frills Mexican, served right real fast.

Rude waitress!!! Her name is Milla. We went here to have a nice relaxing night with some girlfriends. Our waitress was absurdly rude! She argued that we ordered a dish we didn't order. Then wouldn't take it back to the kitchen. When we got the bill she charged us for it and was watching from a distance with arms folded and a nasty look on her face. She proceeded to argue about it and told us that we ate it and she would get charged for it since it was eaten. We didn't even eat it!!!! The manager took it off the ticket and she continued to stare at our entire table with a look of disgust. She even followed our party to the front of the restaurant and stared at us with the same ugly face as we left. Milla needs a major attitude adjustment! We won't be returning to this place!! **Update to my review: Since last night's horrible service, I became very sick to my stomach. So... Food poisoning on top of the rude waitress, Milla. Came here to celebrate my grandmother's birthday with about 15 family members. We had no reservations, but we were seated in about 20 minutes. While we waited a few of us went to the bar and ordered their popular margaritas. Tried the frozen mango one and the regular one on the rocks. They come in small, medium, and HUGE size so pick wisely. These were actually really strong, idk how other people were saying they tasted weak in their reviews. Once seat we all squeezed on the tables and ordered drinks and were given chips and salsa. Their salsa is pretty addicting and so are the chips. My little cousin kept munching away like crazy before the real food actually came. Everyone really liked them as well. For the actual food I ordered the burritos verde. Just a typical burrito, tasty and satisfying, but nothing too amazing. I did like their service and everyone was very friendly. The atmosphere is bright and nice and it was cool to chill with family. Though it was also kind of loud. It's just a simple Mexican Restaurant. More like a 3.5, but sorry I'll have to settle with giving a 3..

Just what the médico ordered if you want Mexican food made the way most Americans enjoy it. I would recommend if you go for beef (anything) that you get the steak and not the ground beef, it isn't bad but it is so much better having steak. They recently opened a larger section into a bar area, and expanded where the old bar was (inside the main dining room) into more dining space. The atmosphere isn't the worst but it could use a little bit of tweaking. You can also feel free to ask for things to be modified off menu, and they will even make up some special hot/hotter salsa. Some good people for servers, and the parking lot is full much of the time. That is usually a good sign, and here it is. On an odd note... I have experienced a few times that when something spills, they do not come out with a mop for some reason. I've asked why, but never really ended up with an answer. I know, weird thing to write in a review, but it is a weird thing to see four or five people sopping up a spilled drink with a few rolls of towels versus a mop and bucket.

Great food, awesome margaritas, great lunch specials, and everything comes out fast. I had the chicken chimichanga which came with rice and beans and asked for guacamole and sour cream. My least favorite part of the meal was the chimichanga; I thought everything else was more flavorful. The margaritas were super sweet, but delicious, and the queso was awesome but I'd wish for more cheese and less salt. We were in and out in about 40 mins and I was glad that we got to try somewhere other than Velvet Cactus. The only area in which it fails (when compared to VC, anyway) is the atmosphere and ambience. It's painted 3 colors, has nothing on the walls, and looks like a space that you'd rent for a cheap baby shower.

Had a weekday lunch outing here. Talk about awesome filling food. They automatically bring out chips and salsa to your table. I then ordered a lunch portion fajita and it was huge!!! I used to be a huge fan of this place pre-Katrina. Sadly a bad experience at their other location made me weary of visiting this one for a long time. I'm pleased to say we had a great experience. There's something strange about visiting a place as a family man that the last time you visited you were a 23 year old bachelor, oh how our priorities change! This place seems to have grown more into a family establishment, which for us is a great thing. We came on a Friday and it didn't take too long to get a table. There were large tables of families everywhere and the restaurant was a bit noisy. Again depending on your situation this is either a good or a bad thing. Would I come here on a quiet evening out with the wife? Heck no Would I take my wife and over active 4 year old here on nights we don't feel like cooking? YES and YES The prices are very reasonable, they have ginormous Margaritas and the food is excellent.

The food's decent and maybe just a tad more expensive than I would like, but it's probably one of the better spots in NOLA! I've only come here for lunch. It's not the most aesthetically-pleasing place (wires coming out of the Sheetrock, unfinished paint), but as long as you aren't planning to stare at the walls, you should be okay! Also, my phone won't let me check in here - which is a bit annoying! Yelp keeps telling me I'm "too far away," while I'm seated in the middle of the restaurant. Not sure what that's about.

Carreta's Grill is a small local chain with two other locations on the North Shore. This place is often a madhouse during weekday lunch hours and is often crowded to capacity. They have a decent menu selection and some good combos that let you sample many of their offerings. Their enchiladas actually have some sauces with distinctive flavors so those are a good choice. They really excel here with keeping you well supplied with complimentary chips and salsa for your entire visit. Its a decently average TexMex place where you get what you pay for and will definitely not leave hungry.

The first few times I went here with my friends I was in love with it, but the more I go back it just seems mediocre to me. I have to say they have the best chips I've ever had in a restaurant. Before you can even finish the basket at your table a fresh pile of newly fried ones are brought out to you. Their salsa is pretty good too but my friends and I love to order a bowl of bean and cheese dip to go with it. It's usually packed during lunch hours and I think the same goes for nighttime. I normally go a little after lunch time hoping the crowd dies down then. They have pretty cheap margarita's from what I can remember. It's been a while since I had one since I'm not much of a drinker. The margarita glasses are a pretty decent size. I think they come out in a pretty big glass unless you tell them otherwise. Their items are fairly affordable in my opinion. I don't have a favorite dish or item here since I tend to try new things each time I go. However they recently renovated this place and revamped the menu. I tried out the Pollo Loco (I think that's how it's spelled) and it was utterly disappointing. The steamed vegetables were anything but steamed. It felt like mush as I was eating it. The chicken was a bit dry and sadly the only way I could eat the chicken was cause of the melted cheese on top. My friends were satisfied with their dishes and the only complaint was that it was too much food. It is heavy food to eat but I think when you find a favorite you'll keep coming back.

Had lunch on a sunday here with the family. Oh how I wanted to love it - how can you not love a mexican grill? Well, lets start by saying that there were not a lot of grilled options on the menu. There was an extensive ala cart menu which I used. On an upside, the 'kids burger' was at least as big as a whopper with an adult size side of fries. All in all, I have a feeling I'll be drug here again, and hope the menu gets better. On a personal note, you may want to avoid if you have sensitive bowels.

For under $10 you can grab this delicious salad to go or eat there and of course they give you fresh salsa and warm tortilla chips for free! I give this restaurant four stars because I am partial to strong margaritas. From time to time, I am willing to admit that the hazy glow of just enough tequila makes me laugh a little louder and smile a little more. My husband, who is the designated driver would give this restaurant a 3. Overall: Standard Mexican fare with great service. I always know what to expect when coming here, and I never leave hungry. Comfort food (and drink) in every sense of the phrase. Large parties welcome. The Service: Hit usually, miss occasionally. In general, the staff works to turn tables with quick and attentive service. I've never gone a full two minutes with an empty chip basket. This is not to say that the staff wants you in and out. I've hung around for hours at a table with friends ordering drinks and talking, and I've never felt rushed in large and small parties. Speaking of which, every time I go to this place there's a large party of 10+ somewhere. If you need such accommodations, this is a good place. Now for the miss part, I get the impression that this business hires family. For example, last time I was there, I ordered my customary margarita on the rocks, and my soft spoken waiter looked at me as if he'd never heard of such a thing. He also disappeared for about 30 minutes mid-meal which was odd. For what its worth, he apologized on return without prompting and looked visibly shaken. I was actually concerned for him. The Food: In general, this is what I have come to expect from Mexican food this side of the border. Most dishes are standard fare. No one dish is truly outstanding, except the tequila which always stands out in my drink and does what I have come to expect it to do. But seriously, the food is budget friendly. I really like the salsa. It's nice and chunky with fresh herbs, especially cilantro (which I love). The cheese dip (queso) appetizer is also a nice splurge, but I'm sad that the smaller portion appetizer size was eliminated. For entrees, the carne asada and fajitas are my go-to dishes. They are good, but be sure to request the guacamole and such. My husband likes the chicken flautas. I think they are too crunchy, but it doesn't bother him.Hhe likes the combination of the sour cream and the cheese. My hubby cannot recommend the burrito supreme. He found that to be underwhelming. The Ambiance: The renovation was definitely worth it, and has added some much needed space. I like the fact that there are two dining areas now. Before, the room would get very loud, and I haven't noticed the noise level as much since the renovation. Also, thank goodness for off street parking, but get there early because the parking fills up fast!

Ok, after a few more meals, I'm bumping it down. The chile relleno wasnt very good. You can choose the stuffing which I really liked, but it turns out, they only put the pepper ontop of the filling you choose. It could fool you, but its not actually stuffed with meat -only cheese. And that cheese is American cheese. American cheese at a mexican restaurant is a no-no. The batter on the pepper was a thick, not crisp, doughy coating. The whole thing certainly didnt taste fresh. Considering they bring the food out within 5 minutes of ordering, I'm sure the pepper is premade, which is why its soggy. You can't premake fried food, once they sit, they arent the same! I wouldnt recommed this dish.

Husband brought me here for a birthday surprise. When we got there & I saw it was Mexican my inner Chica screamed O LAY! The atmosphere is very Artclectic & LOUD. You literally have to scream to hear one another. Tons of booths & tables & an outside seating area which is probably awesome & tons of fun w/ a group for the nicer weather months. It was a Wed. & they were PACKED. The wait was only maybe 15 minutes. The 2 for 1 frozen Margaritas made it worth it. Service was wonderful! Apps we had queso (who has chips, salsa without queso), tamales & crawfish banditos. Everything was yummy Entree my husband got these fall off & suck the bone ribs, my son (who we believe was also Mexican in his former life) his all time bean & cheese burrito & I HAD to try the Fajitas. I didn't get a bite of my sons Burrito but my Fajitas were what they were......Fajitas. Good but nothing extra special about them. It was tons of food that everyone took home a doggy bag & it made great lunch the next day We ordered the Nachos ice cream that I could not try b/c it came w/ cinnamon but look YUMMY. Since my husband & son wiped it out I would say my visual was spot on. I shared the Tres Lache Cake w/ my husband & it was sooooooo moist & yummy We will DEFINITELY go back & this time would love to bring a group & sit on the patio

The experience was okay.... But I will start off with the fact that we had a table of 14 due to a birthday. But I saw the waiter literally twice once for drinks and once for my food order. I ran out of my water the first 20 mins I was there and then 20 mins later I had to ask someone else to refill my cup. My plate was fairly good I had the tacos al pastor I won't complain about my tacos the guacamole was awful, and the retried beans were awful. The chips were fresh and the salsa tasted like it was held in a plastic container for a long time. That pretty much sums it up for my review and my experience there. I probably won't ever go back, oh and on weds they have a live band playing I don't know what time it starts but it ends @10 I believe so make sure u get there before 7 if u want a table.

My family and I love this restaurant. Its a great place family restaurant or a great place for a date. The staff is very accommodating, the food is consistently good and the margaritas are seductively dangerous! We recently took my daughter to Carretas for her birthday. We had a party of 16, so I called ahead. A table was prepared for us when we walked in the door along with tasty chips and salsa for everyone. The service was perfect. Wait time for our apps and entrees was normal. The staff came out and sang my daughter happy birthday in Spanish. She had a blast. My family and I highly recommend Carretas!

This restaurant has great service and the food comes quickly. If you order an appetizer, you may want to wait a few extra minutes to order your meal as the food comes quickly as well. It is hot, good food. I have eaten here several times, and some of the dishes will have you running to the toilet by the time that you make it home. The queso is delicious and they must put something in it to make it addicting. Just to be on the safe side, make sure you are going someplace after where you feel comfortable spending some time on the toilet depending on what you order. Make sure to order a drink with your meal when they are busy as it will help in dealing with the very noisy children that are eating with their families.

I find the food at Carreta's to be pretty boring. It's your standard tex-mex fare but it definitely use a little more mex in the mix. I've never been wow-ed by the service, it can be pretty slow, even if they're not busy. (Which is the opposite of what I've come to expect from Mexican restaurants.) They seem to be in a constant state of renovations that never really get finished. I think there are better choices for this kind of food.

Their fajita meat was insanely salty and other than the salt had no identifiable flavor. Needed a quick dinner before a movie, so we decided to try Carreta. The food and everything came out fast. Complimentary chips and salsa. Nice. However, this place honestly does not impress me. Not sure if I am just not a Mexican food fan, but I did not enjoy much here. -Frozen Margarita : the only thing that was yum. -Appetizer : Popeye - a lightly spinach dip served with chips. Was just OK. I liked the chips though. -Entree : Baja fish tacos - 2 little tortilla tacos served with a spicy sauce. I was hoping to like this dish I ordered, but sadly, it was super bland. Not a kick of flavor. The lime did some justice though. Carne Sada - my date liked it. Me on the other hand, didn't think it was appetizing one bit. The meat, .. the whole thing really.. lacked something.. I probably just don't have the taste buds for Mexican food.

I like the atmosphere, especially the natural light that comes in by the bar tables. The white queso dip is so good i cant stop until theres none left, get the large! I tried it once with the sausage added and I didn't like it at all. The complimentary salsa is really good. They have a decent tequila selection and good sangria. Literally there is no seasoning on the meat . . . no salt, no pepper, no cumin, no oregano, nada. And the bean dip was ok, but I've had way better. The wait staff is always sketchy in that way you think they're talking about you in Spanish . . . no one is that fake-friendly, and no one calls me "amigo" or "my friend" that much - especially when all you're doing is bringing me iced tea and rice and beans . . . which have no seasoning. It's like they're not trying. It's as if they don't have any other Mexican restaurants around, which they don't. Taco Bell is a few blocks away, but that doesn't constitute food much less a restaurant. Drive a little further and go to Taqueria Corona . . . . more expensive, but you pay for quality.

Best Mexican restaurant in Metairie. The food is always hot, the queso dip is to die for, and the service is great. Try the tacos!!! They also have a lunch menu with some really great prices.

The first few times I ate here were okay. Nothing spectacular, nothing to write home about, somewhat bland but authentic-ish food. I went back yesterday with a Yelp review in mind, and was pretty disappointed. The chips were nice and hot, but somewhat greasy and a slightly alarming shade of yellow that seems very not-natural. The cheese dip that I recalled so fondly seemed very heavy and thick and not-nearly-as-good-as-I-remembered. I was STOKED to see portabella mushroom fajitas on the menu, though, and knew all was right with the world when I heard the sizzling plate headed to our table. Sadly, all was not right with the world after all. The mushrooms / onions / peppers were practically swimming in grease, so much that I could only stomach two fajitas even though I was really hungry when we went in. The onions and peppers could have been cooked a bit more for my liking as well - I'm a big fan of them ending up super-sweet and caramelized. The rice was okay, the beans were eh, the fixins' were fresh and plentiful. I'm not a huge fan of guacamole though I'm coming around to it, but this version had way too much cilantro for me. Husband, on the other hand, loved it, so your mileage may vary depending on your affinity for the s.tuff. Only three tortillas came with my meal - no way possible I could have gotten all that stuff crammed into those three little tortillas. I boxed up the leftovers with the idea of tossing it all in a skillet and cooking it a little more to my liking, and had the bright idea of tipping the box sideways and seeing if any of the extra grease came out so I didn't have to deal with it later. Man, big mistake. I was pretty appalled (and disgusted) at how much came spilling out of that box and onto my empty plate. Easily three or four tablespoons, not including the little bits of veggie juice that came with it all. Just... ew. I won't be ordering that ever again. :/ Service was just fine, no complaints there. It wasn't very busy when we went in, and there were servers practically coming out of the woodwork when we walked in the front door. The restrooms have been upgraded since I've been last (it's been a WHILE) which was a nice surprise, since they were decidedly unsavory on my last visit -- kudos for that at least. Hopefully this was just a bad day in the kitchen. It will be a WHILE before my stomach-memory allows me to come back and test the theory.

I ordered a taco salad and it was so loaded with sour cream I literally couldn't tell what other ingredients were in it. It was basically chicken with 90% sour cream. I would have been better off at Taco Bell.

I'm from Texas and I know Tex-Mex. Carreta's is quite good but I'm comparing it to the best of the best. Service was attentive and good.

I LOVE Carreta's. It's definitely my favorite Tex-mex restaurant on the Northshore. The margaritas are fantastic. Happy hour is on Wednesdays! The shrimp fajitas are delicious also. I recommend the fajitas and the Carreta's cheese dip!

Simply not good, but what was I to expect from a Metarie Tex-Mex joint? A man can dream, can't he? I had the free chips and salsa, a Cuervo margarita on the rocks, and the beef fajitas. You can't really mess up chips and salsa - chips were likely from a bag, but the salsa was tasty. I have a big problem with any "authentic" Tex-Mex or *god forbid* a Mexican restaurant pushing margaritas that are not made from 100% blue agave tequila. Carreta's is pushing super-sweet margaritas made with Jose Cuervo by the boatload. What a shame. Be sure to ask to upgrade to a real tequila if you order a margarita. The beef fajitas tasted like soy sauce. I wasn't expecting Chinese food... Now, I realize soy sauce is a common ingredient in fajita marinade, but it should never be the prevailing flavor in the finished product and man I thought I was at Five Happiness. Disappointing. The service was friendly and everybody appeared to be having a good time - and I can see why. The atmosphere was practically bawdy, as everybody had been hitting the margaritas hard and were having a damn good time. So expect some noise on busy nights. Having visited the Carretas in Hammond, I can verify that this location does not compare favorably. And that's a shame.

I love this place. I'm not a fan of Tex-Mex food, but I love straight up Mexican fare. I mostly order a la carte, have gotten the tacos, burritos, enchiladas and have been very pleased. I like the simplicity of the dishes. Nothing is drowning in sauce. The white cheese that they use is the kicker and what sets this place apart. This is also where my favorite guacamole is served. Straight up avocado, with a fresh slice of tomato, and some light garlic seasoning. Nothing to get in the way of the essence of guacamole. The bar is fully stocked, and I like their margaritas. I'm not a tequila snob, so I am fine with their basic margs. The sangria margarita is my favorite. Yes, it's a very girly drink. You can upgrade to whatever high end tequila you are into. The atmosphere is fine, very family friendly, however, it gets a little loud when there is live music or the magician. By a little loud, I mean it gets really freaking loud. At least the service is super quick, so that if you happen to be at Carreta's during Loud Night, you can get out of there quickly.

Margaritas and Queso are fabulous. The service here is always super fast and friendly, sometimes the noise level can be deafening. Especially when the mariachi band is there. Cinco de mayo is always a blast and did I mention the margaritas? Go get one. Half fruit and half regular=whole deliciousness.

I have gone here 4 times and when i first went it was really nice and each time after it seems to get worse. Parking is ok, and the seating is ok, there under construction so i try not to let that effect my experience. The staff is nice and helpful, the chips and salsa come out fast while your waitress is getting your drinks. Chips are good, wife likes the salsa, queso cheese is ok, we got the Popeye dip, and i don't know what to say. Its spinach mixed with there queso sauce so its not bad but not that great, and served with fried wheat chips which i think is wheat tortilla cut up and fried so the texture was a little strange at first. Food was ok, my tamale was a little mushy, but my taco was great, my wife got the fajitas and loved them. she didn't like the Chile relleno but it could have just been her. Enchilada's was good and everything seemed to be ok. I wasn't impressed but wasn't disappointed. Later i my stomach started hurting and i wasn't sure if it was from the food i eat here. I took my leftovers home and didn't eat until the second day and a couple hours later i felt ill again, so i threw everything left away.

Quantity of food is great! Salsa and chips were superb, especially bc they're free. I ordered the shrimp fajitas which were yum, but def Tex Mex food. I also ordered the top shelf margarita and I had to make myself finish it. The pour of alcohol is weak and the sour mix is not fresh squeezed. Not a fan of bottled sour mix! Overall, the service and food was good and I'll probably be back once a year. But, I'll opt for a Negra Modelo instead.

I have been here several times, the salsa and guac are good, the fajitas are greasy and the menu selection is limited to greasy meaty stuff. My boyfriend loves this place. We ate there last night, needless to say, I agree with the guy who said it is not for those with sensitive bowels...I have been miserable all day! The three stars is for the fast service and the fact that the margaritas make the less than desirable food go down better. Also, if you want to talk, don't go here on a thursday, it's the day when the magician comes in so the place is full of kids. No biggie but with the tile floors and stucco walls there is nothing to absorb the noise.

The food is wonderful. The decor is awful. Its loud and voices carry. If your eyes are easily offended and you want to have a quiet conversation do it elsewhere. I lived in Austin for a few years after Katrina and I must say this is the closest comparison that I could find some of my favorite home grown Mexican style restaurants. The food is flavorful not overly spicy. The verde sauce is perfect. The queso is wonderful. The service is alright. I know not every server is on the A team. B team needs shifts too. Enjoy the food and attempt to understand the yellow walls and hot pink trim.

Ohh! I love Carretas! If only I didn't keep getting sick from eating here. Seriously, I love this place. Love the food. The employees, ehh not so much. But what are you going to do? Like any mexican restaraunt, you will get sick. Also, this location has plumbing problems. So you may go in one day and walk right out. No way people want to eat with bathroom smells all the way to the front door. Gross. So go in with an open mind. Love the hot hot chips they serve as you sit down. The meal for two is not bad. Priced well for the amount of food you'd be served. But beware, even though it is a Mexican restaraunt do not be fooled into thinking every entree comes with a side of rice,beans, pico de gallo, sour cream and tortillas. And the lunch menu is kinda pricey.

Don't let all the cars parked outside scare you away. Find a place to park on the side of the road and go in. You won't regret it. This is my favorite place to eat when I'm in New Orleans. "How about Brennan's tonight?" "Nah." "Broussard's? Antoine's?" "...mmm...no." "I know...Bayona??" "I don't think so." *sigh* "Fine. Carreta's...AGAIN." "THANKS, BABY!" *smooch* This place has the best chile relleno I've ever had, and I've eaten quite a few. Delicious salsa w/ warm chips AND they make super tasty top-shelf margaritas just like your favorite bad uncle. There's also a mushroom chimichanga here that will make you roll your eyes in ecstacy. OH, and once a week, you can catch a mariachi band and a magician! ....RIGHT?!?

I absolutely LOVE their chimichangas. They have the greatest authentic Mexican food as well as delicious, and might I add HUGE, margaritas! The service from the wait staff could use some improvement. However, their food is so great and I have honestly never tasted Chimichangas like theirs before. Even Nacho Mama's has nothing on Carretas.

This place is just average and not authentic. It's just one notch above Taco Bell. The Queso and Guacamole dip are decent, but the chips are store bought. I was expecting more. I gave them 3 stars only because it wasn't my worst meal ever that credit goes to George's in Mandeville.

Should be two dollar signs and nowhere near as good as northshore carettas. You're better off spending the wasted money on toll to cross the causeway and eat at the real one. All things considered, this place is fine/adequate. We'll leave it at that.

There's obviously just something about Tex-Mex that often brings out the extremes in people. I think it's the limited palette of the genre, maybe; everyone gets all frenzied when making critical judgements, because it's all about details and personal preference after a certain point. I'm from Austin, where the Yelp entries on various city landmarks of fried/larded wonderfulness are basically a flamewar of alternating accolades and curses. The thing is, those places have to deal with a pretty avid customer base with significant options and experience (and don't even get me started on San Antonio). Caretta's seems to have it pretty easy. I can't quite account for the love of this place otherwise. In short, this is neither authentic nor good Mexican food. Nor is it even good Tex-Mex. Nor is it even cheap. Nor is it atmospheric, fun, or really anything besides a crappy and wasted trip out to Metairie. Before I lived here, gumbo was pretty much chili, but with fewer peppers and more rice. That's kind of what's going on with Carreta's in the Mexican department. FAIL.

This is my girlfriend's favorite restaurant, and for a good reason. The food is insanely delicious. The salsa truly is unbeatable in the NOLA area. Most people get the Carreta's Dip (which is just some sort of Asadero Cheese dip,) but I recommend the Popeye Dip, which comes with amazing wheat chips and spinach and artichokes. Quesadillas are great, as are the fajitas. In the running for best, hearty vegetarian food in New Orleans. Try it!
