Dear Mandeville Bake Shop, Your red velvet cake squares are amazing enough to justify driving across the Causeway. My dad is in love with your petit fours and bear claws. Your staff has been warm and friendly on every visit. Your Death By Chocolate cake was a huge hit with my finicky grandma and with everyone else when we celebrated her 98th birthday last year. She may be a little old lady, but based on the way she shoveled in that cake you'd have thought she was a 300 pound football player who hadn't eaten in days. I went to visit her later in the week, and she confided in me that she'd actually hidden a giant slab of the leftover cake from my cousins because, well, it was so good she just didn't want to share. I am not a chocolate cake fan, but even I thought it was pretty tasty. However, as we are celebrating her 99th birthday in just a few short weeks, I have to say I feel very let down that your cake did not live up to its name. So I think next time we will just stick with arsenic.

I wanted to pick up a dozen or so petit fours for a friend's birthday. They had to be a certain flavor and after calling the bakery in my area and turning up short on my flavor choices, I decided to call the surrounding areas. My first call was to Mandeville Bake Shop. "Hi. What type of petit fours do you have in store at the moment?" Honestly wasn't expecting this list: Carrot cake Chocolate German chocolate Red velvet Almond Doberge (chocolate, lemon and pistachio!) Praline Whew. I gained 5 pounds just typing that. I inquired about closing time and she informs me that it's at 4:30 PM. Uh-oh... It's 4 o'clock and I'm 30 minutes away. "No problem. I'll just box up your choices and wait for you to get here." That is great customer service. Even better were the petit fours. I may or may not have eaten a couple on the way back home. What?! I'm only human. I mean, I had box of pastries riding shotgun all the way back home! What would you have done? :) They were moist and delicious and decorated perfectly. I LOVED them and so did my lucky recipient. Mandeville Bake Shop, thanks for saving the day!
I already posted this review on the other Krummel's Yelp site as I understand that both Mandeville locations are owned by the same folks. Went into this shop the other day and didn't realize that my wife had filched my debit card until I went to pay. I was in line with a bunch of other folks and when I got up to pay, my other card wouldn't work. I was embarrassed and mumbling something about "will be back... need to run home, etc." when the attendant asked me if I were a Vet. I don't know how she knew, but I am, of course, so I replied in the affirmative and she said "it's on the house today." This bakery has forever earned my loyalty from that simple act of kindness. Not just good eats but good folks, too. Thanks to that attendant and please know that the free doughnuts you gave me that day will come back to you in future business many times over. Raced to get there before closing on a Friday, got there for five minutes to six, was in the building with other customers picking up their orders and was told that they were closed and would not wait on me. Very irritated but decided to give them another chance, purchased a Do bash cake 1/2 Chocolate and half Lemon cake broke in half while sitting on the table. Will never go back again, no quality they are only interested in the money, they take no pride in their work.

This bakery is awesome. It reminds me of Mackenzie's. Petit fours, cakes in every variety, iced cookies, doughnuts (even a giant doughnut!) and fresh bread. It smells amazing and the people are very friendly (though usually rushed in the AM hours). If your on the northshore and don't have a fear of carbs, go check it out!

I'm not sure if it is a good thing that the Mandeville Bake Sop is a few blocks from my house. Yes, I live close to some of the best baked goods I've ever had, but my waistline doesn't NEED those baked goods. Some of my fave stuff - HUGE apple fritters and cinnamon buns, fresh donuts, cheesecake with graham cracker crust, petit fours, cookies, and sausage biscuits (they're baked with the sausage in the middle!). All made that day, so they are FRESH. If you stop in an hour or so before they close, you can sometimes pick up anything left over for half price. They clean out those cases for all the good stuff for the next day! The place is no-frills. No fancy decor in cute pastel stripes and/or dots, no designer lighting, no espresso. There are tables and chairs, but they are very basic diner stuff. The baked goods is where this place shines. Stop in one morning, grab a cup of Community Coffee and a cinnamon bun or a sausage biscuit. NOTE: they are closed on Mondays.

The Petit Fours... GET THEM... go and get them now.... Then bring them to me. Hahahaaaaaa Mandeville Bake Shop has the only petit fours I will ever eat for the rest of my life. EVER. Whenever I am in town, I buy 2 to 3 dozen the very first day I arrive (usually on the way to my mother's straight from the airport... because I have pre-ordered them the day before my flight and they're waiting for me!! I'm one track minded that way!) and those are gone within 48 hours. They are little squares of wedding cake-almondy-fondant-covered perfection. No goofy, messy, icky jam or jelly stuck between the cake layers. Just solid cake and sugar and OH MY GOD....You see that? My mouth is watering. I've lived in several different locations over the past 10 years and I've tried bakeries at all of them. NOBODY comes close. NOBODY! Oh, they have other good stuff too. *ahem* They've got Doberge Squares and Red Velvet Squares and cookies and cakes and petit fours... Did I mention they've got really good petit fours? I did, didn't I? So, in short. Mandeville Bake Shop has good stuff. Go there and get it. And for those of you on the Southshore... YES... it is worth the drive. Buy a dozen petit fours to get you across that bridge... trust me.

I have tried many bakeries in the area, only to be disappointed in either quality or cost. I have found one that does it! Not only is the food awesome, but they have a person behind the counter in Jimmie that exemplifies new Orleans hospitality. Love it!

Ahhh the Mandeville Bake shop its been sometime and quite a few pounds have been lost since I've been here. This place was a frequent jaunt for early morning fresh made donuts, since it was just down the street from work. But the pastries are what its all about. The chocolate turtles remind me of McKenzie's. The eclairs are amazing. The King Cakes are outstanding, and the Doberge cake is sinfully delicious and as good as some of the well known south shore bakeries such as Gambinos and Randazzo's (I will post reviews for those places as well). Service is friendly and you can't miss it, just look for the giant beef cow at the front of the parking lot! (they are next door to a butcher)

So I have heard many good things about Mandeville Bake Shop. In particular, I have heard about their amazing King Cake. Still have yet to try one. But a few weeks ago I caught a ride with my brother and his wife to a family reunion. We stopped in at MBS. It wasn't much to look at as far as the facility but it was clean. The baked goods, OH the backed goods OMGAWD they were beautiful. There were Saints themed cookies that not only were decorated perfectly they tasted great too. We also got almond cookies and chocolate chip cookies. And TURTLES that tasted just like old school McKenzie's turtles. We even purchased a red velvet cake that I did not get a chance to taste. So today I had to throw a wedding shower and I got that red velvet cake. It lived up to its its rep. Very moist and the icing was perfect and I am not an icing fan. Just enough vanilla and cream cheese. I am glad I don't live all that close to this place because I would have serious problems staying away.

Dis place is da best. We were born and raised in New Orleans but moved away in 1978. SInce then, each time we return, it's been tougher and tougher to find genuine New-Orleans-style pastries in the area, especially across Lake Pontchartrain. Well this place has got 'em--the genuine New Orleans stuff. The chocolate éclairs are the real chocolate-filled items, not phony "chocolate éclairs" filled with vanilla crème and slathered with chocolate frosting to dupe the naïve buyer. We buy pastries here every time we're in the area. The real thing.
