Gio's is a fantastic restaurant. My wife and I had reservations here the Saturday after Valentine's day after waiting for about 20 minutes with no action at the Maitre d' area where we saw our name in the reservation book, we walked out and ate across the street at Carmelo's. Gio's was crowded the day after Valentine's but my wife was upset so we split even though I really wanted to try Gio's out. Fast forward a week and we decide to try it again. We just walked in with no reservation and the woman running the joint said "Oh Gio said no more walk-ins tonight but I can get you a table." I was shocked when we entered the dining room, it was half-empty. There maybe only like ten tables in there. Seriously, are they really only interested in serving 3 or 4 couples at a time? The ambiance in the restaurant is nice, you first enter into the deli, then step into the bar and then into the small dining room. It looks like it be a great restaurant which is what it is. In the dining room there are photos from the 70's and 80's with Gio and all sorts of Vegas celebrities like Elvis, Don Rickles, Wayne Newton, Mohammed Ali, etc. and some Vegas magazine covers where his restaurant won best of the year awards. Apparently this guy had a phenomenal restaurant from the 70's to the 90's in Las Vegas. How Gio landed in Mandeville? Who knows, Witness Protection Program? The restaurant has the vibe of a real Italian restaurant, great atmosphere. Now on to the food. Everything was had was simply fantastic. At first glance Gio's menu looks like standard Sicilian/Southern Italian fare, calamari, putanesca, lasagna, osso buco, etc., but after reading the detailed descriptions on Gio's menu, you realize that he puts his own touch on each dish. We had the calamari to start with which for once was not fried but in a garlic/tomato sauce and was incredibly delicious. For entrees my wife had the lasagna and I had the putanesca pasta. Words can't describe how incredible they both were. With putanescas you normal get hit in the face with a baseball bat with the strong flavors of anchovy and capers. I like that and that was what I was expecting. Gio's putanesca is incredibly refined, you can taste the anchovy and capers but they don't blow out the other flavors in the sauce. Instead of being hit in the face with a Louisville Slugger, Gio's putanesca gives you a relaxing facial massage making your taste buds feel awake and alive, not beaten down and burnt out. I never realized how much more incredible putanesca could be. They don't have a large desert menu, just Italian Ice, Ricotta Cheese Cake and Cannoli, the waitress said Gio makes them all in-house (they're not frozen stuff ordered from the Sysco catalog). Me and my lady went for the Ricotta Cheese Cake and again it was a piece of culinary art for the appetite. Light and fluffy compared to normal cheese and delicious. I can't remember the last time I've been to a restaurant where every course blew me out of the water. This place is incredible. With regards to the service side of the dining experience, it was good but you need to be prepared to wait a bit for your food and have a relaxing dinner, which isn't a bad thing if you are having a romantic date. I can see why they had trouble when the restaurant was crowded and why Gio only wants to serve a half full house. It really is a family affair in there. It looked like there were only four people working: Gio and some other guy in the kitchen, Gio's wife acting as Maitre D' and server and Gio's beautiful daughter waiting tables and singing arias (she's an alto). I am so glad that we decided to give this place a second chance. We will definitely be back and my goal is to try everything on the menu, Gio is a fantastic chef. It is a little pricey with entrees in the $20 range and apps around $10 but it really isn't more than Carmelo's and is worth every penny. Gio's food is on a totally different level than Carmelo's. Gio's is in the Stratosphere. Phenomenal and highly recommended.

Wow. Fantastic experience, all around. Found this little treasure on a whim... Great wine selection. Intimate surroundings. The chef is incredible and personable. We will be back as soon as we head out for a date night. Thank you chef for a lovely experience.

One of the top 25 chefs in America! You definitely have to come here! His wife and daughter are the wait staff and are totally excellent at what they do. They have a very interesting back story but the bottom line is how exquisite the food is. Absolutely fantastic experience! I love everything about this place and will never go to a different Italian restaurant and if you visit this place you will feel the same way.

Another great meal by Gio and his talented staff. Although veal is the specialty here, every dish is superb. The lasagna last night was deserving of its reputation as amongst the best of New Orleans. Once you give this place a try, you'll be coming back for the rest of the menu as well as the variety of delectable desserts. You might become " "regulars" like us!

Had a great family meal with Gio overseeing every dish prepared. A true family operation and one that takes pride in the quality of food served. Great conversation and story telling with Gio and his wife. True Sicilian cooking down to the sauces.

The food was very good but took FOREVER! They had one waitress for the whole restaurant and the owner trying to help and he was going back and forth to kitchen to help cook as well! Hire another waitress and be more efficient! The food was very good though and I think on the high end for the quality of food. Another huge issue is, if you have a restaurant in the south and you serve sweet tea, then you need to drive to the Winn Dixie buy some Lipton and actually brew the sweet tea fresh. Serving Arizona tea from a gallon jug does not work. Especially if your going to charge for it!?! Yuck!!! We had the lasagna and fettucini with chicken. Was pretty typical, lasagna was lacking some sauce. Noodles I believe are fresh made which is a huge bonus! Not much meat though, don't think we had even a whole chicken breast. More like a chicken tender and for that price we should have the whole chicken! . Also turn some lights on, people using their cellphone flashlights to read the menu. Which was quite hard with black lettering on a dark background. So turn up some lights. Decor was nice but a bit messy. I would go back again but maybe another night.

Romantic date night, or intimate gathering; Gio's Villa is dining perfection. Italian food in genuine form is a language in itself, and Giovanni communicates on a level that is hard to imitate. We began with a bottle of wine from Venice, Gio's eggplant antipasti, a primi of the rigatoni and a main course of the Bisteca. It was all brilliant. The cannoli, hazelnut gelato, and espresso at the finish was only a pale delight compared to the impromptu operatic performance by our waitress (and Giovanni's own daughter). Seriously- what more could you want from an Italian restaurant? Ingenuity, flavor, and performance. Don't come here if you're pinching pennies. This place is meant to be genuinely enjoyed.

Chicken parm was very pounded out and not your normal version. Very good. The lasagna was quite good too. The waitress sang opera!

Outstanding Italian restaurant. Small intimate and almost like being in Italy. Plan to spend a couple hours and enjoy with a bottle of good red wine. Great menu and large portions.

We went back to Gio's after after a 5 years absence. The food is still the same...mediocre at best. The service is so so and it looks like they're getting ready to close. Too bad the food was flavorless at best.

Gio's is the best Italian food in Louisiana. Just like my mom made when I was a kid in in Pennsylvania. Food is fresh and terrific and the service is great. Gio is the real deal and a friendly guy. Small and cozy-better on inside than outside Great for special occasions and Gio makes you feel like you are his family

Gio does it right-he is always on and the food has such great flavor. He should open in a different spot so that he can put some of the other restaurants in the area out of business.

This place is simply amazing! We were able to get a late reservation which was very nice. The atmosphere is relaxing and unique, with drawings that Gio has done himself. The plates are something out of a Italian movie and set the mood. We ordered the lobster ravioli and the fettuccine alfredo with shrimp. It was honestly the best lobster ravioli I've ever had. The bread with olive oil and red wine vinaigrette was simple yet perfect. Found out that everything is made from scratch and prepared by Gio only, and it really shows in the quality of his food. The service was great also. We will be back!!

My boyfriend and I went here just after the holidays with his brother and sister-in-law for a double date. We loved the wine, the appetizers (bruschetta and eggplant), and our meals. Each entrée is made in-house, from scratch, and to order by a chef right from Sicily!! Delicious and rich food...huge portions. We enjoyed being serenaded by the chef's beautiful daughter who doubled as our server. Family-owned, quaint little business. Can't wait to go back!!

This was my second visit. Unfortunately we were seated in the bar area again this time, too much traffic and noise but the food was very good, the service was ok but it was just the chef, his wife and daughter. I recommend reservations.

My fiancé took me to Villa Vancheri for our first date 5 months ago. We had a great meal and enjoyed ourselves. Four months later he arranged for us to eat there again, at the same table, so he could propose. He made 9pm reservations for a Saturday night (they were advertised to close at 10). Well as we were on our way over there at 855, the hostess called to see if we were still going to make our reservation, explaining that the chef was closing the kitchen. !!!!! My fiancé ended up proposing at Del Porto that night and needless to say we will never return to Villa Vancheri.

This is the best Italian food I have ever had! LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Not only is the food perfect (I had Lasagna) but the atmosphere is intimate and the waitress (the daughter) of the owner) treats you wonderfully. She is also a beautiful Opera signer and you might get lucky enough to be serenaded. This is a family operated business and it seems like nothing but the family works there, so it is very friendly and you feel "at home." You will also be greeted by Gio himself at some point in your meal. Do not expect to be in and out of this place in 45 minutes. I loved that each entrée was spaced out and my husband and I were able to enjoy each other and our bottles of vino! If you are in for a romantic night, have some time, want some incredible food...then load up your wallet and go to Gio's.

What a gem in Mandeville! My father and I found it by accident. Great food and what nice music. It was like going to an actual Italian restaurant . Gio came out several times to check on us and then he watched over food prep. Yoko made sure that our needs were met. The soup was awesome, like back in Italy. You have to go!!

Great food, friendly staff, and Gio happily presiding over the food preparation. Our group of four ordered a veal/eggplant dish, chicken dish, salad and fish - all tasty. The meal was delicious, and the atmosphere polite and comforting. The price, including a bottle of wine and cocktails was average, which I consider a value based on our enjoyment. Recommended.

Very small but romantic little restaurant tucked in beside a Chinese restaurant in Mandeville. The server said they have been there for about 10 years, but they do not advertise...guess that's why my husband and I discovered them only a year or so ago. Finally went to eat there; we had read that the servings are large, so we each ordered a house salad, which was very good, and split a serving of lasagna (and yes, it was very large!). The lasagna was very tasty; my husband thought it was excellent, but I have never had lasagna with green peas in it...didn't care for that in my dish. Other than the peas, it was one of the better lasagna dishes I've had. Service was friendly but a bit sporadic, even though the restaurant wasn't busy. The chef did come out twice, but only visited at another table where the people were obviously friends of his. Good meal, nice atmosphere, but price-y.

We love this place! Everything here is delicious, and we go at least once every 3 weeks. There is a fabulous bruschetta. All the pasta dishes are flavorful and huge! Their eggplant specialty, the lasagna, spaghetti bolognese...all is delicious! And then there is the charming Gio who always stops at the tables to say hello and thank you for coming. So nice! This is a place to relax and enjoy a fine touch of Italy.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
