The food is always good, the rice pudding is some of the best I've had, but the service is hit or miss, usually (almost always) a miss. I often eat by myself, and on three occasions I had waiters who completely ignored me after taking my order. One time, on a day when I was sitting at one of only three occupied tables, I waited 20 minutes after I had finished eating for my check, and I got the check only after getting up and interrupting a group of servers standing by the cash register and talking. One last thing: the serving of rice is skimpy, and there's a charge for extra rice. A much better Indian restaurant in the last city I lived didn't charge for extra rice, and in fact the servers frequently asked if you needed any. That said, I would go here more if the service was better.

I've been here twice during my first week of my recent move to Lafayette. My co-workers have said great things about this place! During my first visit, I had amazing amazing service. Dr. Gupta (the owner who I got pretty close during a meal by myself) was nothing but kind and friendly. The second time, service was a little slower than I would've liked... but I forgive that bc the food was great. So far I've gotten the Chicken Masala and the Butter Chicken. Both awesome!!! PS get the garlic naan. Ending my review with 2 fun facts: 1. Chicken Masala = Butter Chicken. Masala is white meat and Butter Chicken is dark meat. 2. Dr. Gupta also owns Picante, a Mexican restaurant here in Lafayette. Haha!

I only go once or twice a year because if I put the effort out to go there I am doing so to drop some serious cash. I advise if you go then get the whole experience because everything is excellent from the drinks, the appetizers the entrees and the deserts. I have never ever been disappointed with the service I've had and the ambiance is one of the better in Lafayette. Definitely do some research with a friend who is familiar with Indian cuisine if you go.

When we arrived we were the only people there, but by the end of the meal nearly every table was full. Our server, Roman, was adorable. He asked if we had ever been there and when we told him no, he offered to describe the dishes and help us choose something we'd like. Considering that we have both had Indian food countless times, we didn't need that sort of assistance, but still. He was trying, in a complete non-condescending way, to help us feel at ease. We ordered an appetizer -- something with chick peas, yogurt, and samosas -- that was huge and delicious and $7. We ordered daal -- $12.50 and mediocre. Naan, $2.00 for an order but fresh and possibly the best I've ever had. We were both stuffed and couldn't finish the meal, though it was quite good. The prices are definitely too high ($15.50 for daal?!!), but considering that I have yet to find good Indian food in New Orleans, it was a nice surprise to find a comfortable, tasty place in Lafayette.

Delicious food, good atmosphere. They have a large vegetarian curry selection. I love their blackberry mojito. My wife and I go here on semi-special occasions and we've never been disappointed.

We were hesitant to try Masala Indian Kitchen at first because we had never tried Indian food before. We are SO glad that we went though. The atmosphere is very nice, very friendly waiter, and there are a LOT of vegan options compared to anywhere else we have been since we moved to Lafayette. They even put a little flower symbol next to each item that is or can be made vegan. We had the samosas as an appetizer- they were SO good. Loved the flaky crust. I think most people would like that. As our meals we got Vegetable Manchurian and Aloo Baingan. They were both very delicious, and we will definitely be going back.

No choice for Indian food but to go here. Tried three times. First time (lunch), very bad. Second time with friends (Dinner), average food. Third time (Dinner today), Chicken Tikka Masala was average (can't compare with Houston or Baton Rouge) but Rice served with it was not fresh (warmed out of freezer). Expensive too! Ambience is OK type. No Draft Beer. Service was really good. 09/09/15 Dinner time, i prefer Indian food even if its junk. To be true, not far expectations, its still junk at Masala Indian. I ordered TandoOri Platter, oh my god, what kind of food this only India restaurant serving to Lafayette. Get a new chef, Bro. Ask Houston....Only good thing here is Service....

One of my all time favorite places to go. Their major con: it's just too over priced. I used to come here a lot about 5 years ago. Now, I only go when I absolutely have a craving for it. I remember the entrees only being around 10/11$'s. Now they're around $15/16. That would be my ONLY MAJOR complaint. Appetizers: Papad cups are always tastey, I love the sauce. Samosas: we usually order the lamb or potatoes. They're always delicious. Naan: I'm not a big fan of the lamb naan, the garlic is by far my fave. Drinks: The alcoholic drinks are always great, strong enough but you don't just taste the liquor. Entree: Chicken tandoori: the only thing my husband eats since he doesn't like curry and he enjoys it Bangin Bartha: it used to be my favorite vegetarian dish but it's been tasting different lately. Not a good different. The nine jewels, and khadhi Punjabi are probably my go to dishes. Dessert: make room for it!! They're all good We've always had great service , along with that and good food I'll always come back.

If you've not tried Indian cuisine before, or even if you have, Masala is not to be missed. The favors are spot on with varying levels of spiciness. A small establishment that has a cozy, homey feeling. Every time I visit Lafayette I add Masala to my list of restaurants to visit.

I am an adventurous eater and like most anything. Indian food has always been iffy for me though. We saw the reviews on masala and decided to try it out. We got the tiki masala chicken lunch special. Check out my photo to see everything that it came with. It was awesome!! Lots of upscale business people eating here during the lunch hour. Definitely a must try while in the Lafayette area. Get the masala chicken!

I was visiting lafayette from Orlando FL in November 2014 and happened to dine at this place. The food was average. I asked for green chillies and onions as side for biriyani...which is usually given at no charge in most places. These guys charged me $4.00, which I think made the whole dish not worth the $21.00 I paid in total. Don't go here unless you are desperate for Indian food.

I was greeted by a very nice hostess who took my order. I ordered the Tandoori Mix Grill which came with Tandoori Chicken, Chicken Tikka, Seekh Kebab and Tandoori Shrimp $19.50. I really expected more food then what I ended up getting. I didn't know there was a shortage of shrimp. Those two little shrimp with my meal were just pitiful. As for the taste of the food it was okay. I've definitely had better, but for Lafayette a place that lacks ethnic food variety this will do.

I don't know what it is about this state, but all the Indian restaurants I have been to here have been on the expensive side. $16 for chicken tikka masala? Masala Indian Kitchen was one of the first that at least had a good portion size for the price. Being my first time there, I had to order the chicken tikka masala...I mean, its such a staple that if an Indian restaurant can't get that dish right, there isn't any point in going back. Well they got it right. The flavor was right on and the portion size left me leaving full and satisfied. The rice was light and fluffy as well. The Naan was a little doughy but the flavor was, again, right there. The menu is expansive and goes beyond your typical Indian restaurant. There was a good list of appetizers and I went against my servers recommendations and selected the samosa. It was good, but not as flaky as I am used to and the center of one (two per order) was a little frozen, making me think they might be store bought. Next time I am there I will try to shrimp or salmon tikka. My server was attentive without being over bearing, and gave me suggestions when I asked questions. All in all, I will be going back when I am in town. When your hankering for some Indian, and who doesn't from time to time, check out Masala Indian Kitchen, you'll be glad you did.

Tastefully prepared Indian cuisine. Owner is friendly and takes the time to chat to all patrons.

Decent Indian food. Waitress was shiite. Not checked on once during our dinner, and there were only 3 tables seated. Got my drink order wrong. If you get an itch for Indian, its worth a trip, only because there aren't many options in the genre of cuisine in LAF. Aside from that, pass on this chain restaurant service. No qualms about leaving the absent waitress a goose egg for a tip.

When I walk into Masala, my senses come ALIVE! First, the scent of incense is enchanting and makes me want to stay here all day, eating and drinking and relaxing in the beautiful atmosphere of Masala. The space is beautifully decorated and inviting. It feels clean and attentively cared for. The owner is present every day and makes sure everyone completely enjoys their experience at Masala. That is why it is so successful! I have been eating at Masala Indian Kitchen for years! I also have traveled a lot and have eaten at Indian restaurants all over! So now, I can honestly say, that Masala tops them all! Yes, in Lafayette, LA, again, we have the best food - even Indian food! The lunch special is a DEAL!! A GREAT DEAL! You get a cup of lentil soup (YUM!!), a small salad (which honestly I would prefer it to be dark greens instead of iceberg lettuce), vegetable pakora, vegetable of the day, lentil chips, rice, naan, and your entree choice of the day - which can be meat, vegetarian, or vegan. Don't you love that? Dinner is always lovely! I love the chana masala always and also the vegetable manchurian but also everything else, like the vegetable biryani, the chili paneer, the paneer makhani, the lentil soup, the vegetable pakoras, the samosas, the garlic and the onion naan, the MANGO LASSI (YUM!!!), and ALL of the desserts - but my favorite dessert is KHEER! Love this place so much, I might have to go NOW!!! Really, here I go!

Not the best chicken tikka masala but it was good. The portion was on the small side. I was full but I usually have leftovers from Indian restaurants and I didn't here. The owner came over to check on everything which was nice but he proceeded to bad talk all Indian restaurants in New Orleans which was tacky. In fact, Nirvana is better in my opinion. Its a solid option for Indian food in the area.

I am a huge fan of the food as it is some of the best in Lafayette when it comes to ethnic foods. There are only a handful of places that i say are not to be missed when it comes to the food. The slip is the service. Every time i go it seems to be a flip of a coin as to what kind customer service i get. It is rather disappointing as i think this place could easily be a 5 star !

We have been here many times and always enjoyed the food. Wonderful flavor and spices and variety. Had the Samos, lentil soup, Biryani, Vindaloo, Chicken Korma, Lamb Rogan, Tandoori Chicken, Seekh Kebab.... All delicious, service is good, atmosphere is relaxing. Always a great meal. I recommend it highly.

Pretty good stuff - average I'd say. I got the vegetable grill and it came to the table screaming hot and sizzling. Enough for leftovers the next day.

Big city taste, ambiance... & prices! Started with an awesome blackberry mojito ($5 special), followed by garlic naan & chicken korma. The food was all very good, although the chicken was a little "fatty" for my taste. I'd opt for the lamb next time, in hopes of a little leaner meat, and consider sharing a meal, as I ate only half of it. Scott provided excellent service, and the ambiance was top-notch. I got out for just under $30 (one $5 mojito over my expense budget).

  • Eureeka S.

It is my opinion that the dishes at Masala are quite satisfactory...just a little pricey. The Lassi is a rich, tasty yogurt beverage (I had the Mango) and the Hot Chai Tea with a little bit of milk rocks my world. The Samosas are a very good appetizer & I can't seem to go to Masala without ordering the Hara Paneer Tikka appetizer. It is DELIGHTFUL. As far as entrees go, the Saag, Vindaloo, Tikka Masala & Butter Chicken have treated me very well, although the Korma is my all-time favorite at Masala. A clay oven leaves the chicken deliciously tender, and I always bypass the lamb for that reason. The Garlic Naan, Mint Parantha or Wheat Roti are essential during your dining experience. For those going gluten-free, I believe that the Papadum is a viable option (double-check me on that), & I love the taste. Now for dessert: the Mango Moose is F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S & reminds me of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory every time I eat it (order it & you'll understand), the Gulab Jamun is floral, different & quite an acquired taste (keep an open mind) & I can't eat much of the Kheer, which is an Indian rice pudding dish. My friends fell in love with the White Chocolate Bread Pudding. I agree with other reviews that state the overpriced entrees (this greatly limits my ability to eat there) & the hit-or-miss service. For example: (1) I have watched servers pass my table in a nearly empty restaurant while I've waited for my water refill/to-go box/check several times. SEVERAL. Knowing this, I have gotten into the habit of tracking waitstaff down the minute I need something. (2) It would be nice if there was a consistent substitution policy so that I could budget accordingly for my dining experience, since I can easily rack up a $40 bill while dining alone. For instance, I never know when I go whether or not I will be able to get a substitute for rice. On one visit, I can sub Papadum for rice at no extra charge, the next time, I can sub it at a small upcharge, & the next visit, I am told that there are no substitutes, period. Beautifully adorned, Masala is a great place to catch up with a friend, have a birthday party or nestle in for a meal alone. Just be prepared to spend a pretty penny doing any of those.

My first visit here, and I was impressed with the quality of the food, particularly the rice. We started with Chicken 65 which was a perfect appetizer. It seemed a little unusual to be asked how hot I wanted my Chicken Vindaloo, but I went with "Hot" from the choices of Mild, Medium, Hot or Indian Hot. Having grown up in an English town with a large Pakistani community, I like my Indian food hot, so I went with Hot. It wasn't very hot, but they brought me a little pot of chilli paste to liven things up a bit. The rice was extra special - usually I am not a fan of rice but the rice in here was amazing. The chicken tikka masala was really good, although maybe a little too buttery for my taste and the naan bread and paratha were excellent! The decor and lighting and background music were really pleasant, but I did sense a slight sense of pretentiousness, but that could have been the cheap-looking vinyl tablecloths spoiling what was otherwise a sharp-looking place. Desserts were also good, but the desert tray the server brought over looked a little tacky, however his descriptions of the desserts made up for that so we both got one and we weren't disappointed. During our hour-and-a-half there, we were asked if everything was OK many times by many different people, almost to the point of irritation - they almost seemed paranoid. Overall, a good experience. We will be back.

Ok, I only get to go food. So no rating plus or minus or service or ambience. However, Matt is an excellent to-go food getter and bartender. Excellent Indian, crave it every time I'm Lafayette. All of the Tandori and Classics are amazing!

We were on a road trip and had been in the car for about 7 hours when we decided to take a break for some Indian food. We looked on Yelp to see what our best option would be, and decided to give Masala Indian Kitchen a try. We all loved the food. The ambiance was lovely, and the food was delicious! If you like spicy food, be sure to try the bullet naan!

This is great Indian Food! It is fresh and cooked to order. Watch out for the hot and indian hot dishes, but besides that it is great. We get something new everytime we go and it is good. The staff is friendly and fast.

To echo the other reviews, good food bad prices. The topas marinara sauce with shrimp and also with feta were exceptional, but the serving size was smaller than appetizer size yet priced like a meal. WAY over priced. The topas soups were below average. The Indian side of the place provided good portions, good quality, with a rice side, and a little more reasonably priced.

Very interesting restaurant. Was in Lafayette for business and I wanted some Indian food. This is not just your ordinary Indian restaurant, it's a combo Indian and Spanish Tapas place. It seems to be an odd combination but when the owner came by to talk to us, we had to ask. He figured that the Raging Cajuns in the area will not be as receptive to Indian food alone, so he had to offer tapas and Indian food in the same place. It's kind of like salads at McDonalds to appease certain kind of people. I mean, I just want to eat my two filet o fishes, so don't be a sour puss about eating healthy. It's FISH. Anyway, that was off tangent. Anyway, the story goes that there are two kitchens in the back and each set of chefs serve their food. So, we ordered from both menus. We had the tapas for appetizers and Indian food for the main course. Both kinds of food was good, but nothing stands out. If I'm in the area again, I would go back and give it another try.

Yum. The butter chicken was definitely delicious. I'm glad I read the reviews from other people. The garlic naan and mango moose were tasty as well.

I like this place, and the food is delicious. The only problem I have with this place is the price. About twenty dollars per entree, and we always order the naan as well. So after a drink or two, one appetizer and entrees your looking at a pricy bill. 15 dollars is what I would be willing to pay for entrees here, unfortunately though this is the only indian restaurant in Lafayette, so they can charge what they want. We usually get the Hara Paneer Tikka and/or the Chicken 65 which are both outstanding but overpriced. I love the Chicken Korma here. But I will say that multiple times I have been there the owner has asked us how the food was- so the service is from an owner who cares, which is nice to see. But in these hard times, we consider food from this place a real treat because of the price.

My favorite choice in the New Orleans/Baton Rouge/Lafayette region for this cuisine. It's on pricey side, but since I live in Nola, it's a treat when I get there.

Absolutely wonderful taste sensations. Butter Chicken and Saag Paneer with potato Samosas and garlic onion Naan. All I can say is - I have a very happy mouth full of dancing taste buds.

  • Naveed B.

Masala is completely average Indian food. If you're craving Indian food in Lafayette, I don't know of another place that would fit the bill. My main problem with Masala comes from the fact that the place is stupidly expensive. Even all the vegetarian dishes are over $10.00 and if you plan on getting meat expect to spend at least $15.00 a meal and this doesn't include naan. For the best bang for your buck I highly recommend their buffet, despite the fact that it is a very small buffet. If you have any vegetarian or vegan friends, this is a great place to bring them. In the end Masala isn't bad, just overpriced. If it was a bit cheaper I would have given it four stars.

  • Curt H.

I got the lamb masala and it was quite possibly one of the best things I have ever eaten! The food is wonderful, the atmosphere is great, and the price is what you would expect from a fancy sit down place. One word of caution - start with Mild or Medium even if you think you are a crazy Cajun who can eat the hot stuff. I was sweating over the hot spice, but it was incredibly flavorful as well. I would eat here daily

It's great to see an Indian restaurant surviving in Lafayette. Masala is among the better Indian restaurants I've visited, and I hope they stick around. That said... they have some issues with service. When our server brought our food, she thought she had given us the wrong entrées, and apologized by saying, "Oh, I'm sorry, I just had a massive brain fart." Now, I know the dishes looked similar, and we all get confused from time to time, but COME ON. From the casual attitude of the servers, you might expect that their prices might be casual, too. Sadly, no. They even charged me $4 for a small to-go scoop of rice.

Visit Lafayette for work once per month. Each time I go I eat at this place. Ususally get the same thing saag paneer and naan bread. I really enjoy my dining experience. I always look forward to it. Good food and good service. I would recommend this spot if you desire Indian food. If anyone knows of a good place to have Indian in New Orleans please let me know.

Great place. We had a very good server. Owner came by and made sure meal was going well. Menu was extensive. Great quality food. Loved it. Prices were about $12 to $18. We had flat bread and two great curry entrées. A truly excellent meal. Great ambiance as well. We will be going back for sure!.

The decor and strong smell of incense leaves something to be desired but if your looking for quality Indian food, Masala is the place. One hint, stay away from the buffet and order off the menu. The buffet can be bland and spice-less but the menu items have never failed for a spicy lunch. The service is above average and the menu is complete with specialty items. I haven't had the luxury of eating dinner here but I hear great things about their drink menu. Worth the trip to get a high quality taste of India in Lafayette.

  • Doug E.

OK. Indian AND tapas AND they have a buffet at lunch time? I'm sorry to be harsh, but this is NOT Indian food. Indian food is supposed to be fresh. This is basic ingredients such as chicken or beef or rice, with bad Indian style gravy in a dish on the side. It is also way overpriced. I am willing to easily spend +$100 for 3 people if the food is worth it. This food is not. BTW-This is the same family that owns Picantes, which is actually very good.

  • lindsey s.

Had a rather piss-poor first experience there. The waitress was terrible. She knew nothing of the menu and when we ordered the tapas, we ordered 5....like it says to. it wasn't until she handed us the bill after the 4th one that we caught on that the soup was included as one. she argued the fact and we eventually had to get a manager. she tried to talk us out of talking to a manager. he came over and smoothed everything over, said that the menu was a little confusing and that it would need to be reprinted to make things clearer....or at least educate the staff. he gave us a free dessert. We both really really love Indian food and despite our first encounter, we gave it another shot. Pretty decent overall, but like others said, expensive. We had the naan and samosas. My kids mauled the samosas. I had the butter chicken because I had to compare it to my recipe (for the record, mine is better) and my husband had the tandoori chicken. The butter chicken was good, nothing to write home about, but good. I found the sauce maybe a little bland. The tandoori chicken was great. Kids both had tandoori chicken and they loved it. They have a pretty decent selection of drinks too. We would definitely go again and are waiting for an opportunity to go to the lunch buffet.

I went to lunch here last week with a couple of friends that I hadn't seen in years. We all had the buffet and enjoyed everything. The rice, meatballs, and tandoori chicken were all very yummy. The nan was also very good. The one drawback is that there wasn't as large of a selection as I was expecting. I've been to some much smaller places that offered many more dishes on the buffet. Other than that, nothing to complain about. The server was very laid back, and no one ever pressured us to leave (we were there for 2.5 hours).

You, like me, probably see a restaurant listed as a combo between Indian and Spanish Tapas and think to yourself "yeah, I'll pass". That being said, if you are in Lafayette - Please don't pass up this one. While the combination of two very distinct ethnic cuisines at first seems odd, I can say without reservation that Masala pulls it off in spectacular fashion. We dined from both of the menus, yes separate menus for tapas and Indian, and each was a pleasure in its own right. I will keep this review short as I have a glass of Limoncello waiting for me, but I do want to give the highlights. First, our waiter Bryce, was outstanding from start to finish - a true professional in every way. Second, the food was amazing, the lettuce cups and naan from the Indian side were so flavorful but yet not too overwhelming spice-wise as you find in many Indian restaurants. The patatas and bruschetta from the tapas side were both well done and offered original takes on classic tapas. And finally prices, we were both completely satisfied yet not overly stuffed, and we walked out just over 40 bucks including a 9 dollar glass of wine. It might be a touch on the expensive side for Lafayette, but given the atmosphere, waitstaff and food I think it is a bargain. We will be back, often, as out of the 30 or so restaurants we have tried since moving to Lafayette this is the best of the bunch. I have not a single complaint, and that my friends is rare. Do yourself a favor, go visit Masala and sit in Bryce's section if possible.

We've eaten here many times and I've enjoyed each visit. The samosas, curried veggies, tandoori, lamb, and nan are all really good. (My only complaint: the sag paneer wasn't "bad," but I have had much better in other cities. It did satisfy my crazing.) The regular lunch buffet is a real treat, however they offer a vastly different vegetarian buffet on the weekends.

I'm from out of town, visiting for business and was pleasantly surprised to find an Indian restaurant in Lafayette. The food was really good and you can specify whether you want items mild, medium or hot, which was nice. The decor was decent as well. The only issue I had was that it took forever for one glass of wine to make it to our table. Other than that, everything else was great.

  • Mona L.

The family owners of this restaurant are lovely people originating from India and their chef, Ragi and kitchen staff are very capable of preparing delicious cuisine. The waitservice is very on and off - dependent upon who you get. There is one peculiar server who cannot answer any questions about the menu because she has not tried anything on the menu - except for one special chicken dish! She turns ANY request into a major act of congress. The nickeling and diming is endless... even for extra sauce served in a small ramakin. And, please do not ask for noodles rather than rice... the commotion caused is beyond comprehension. The food was on the table before the server delivered the wine --- BUT she said she did not forget while tending to three other tables and did not return until after another server kindly brought it over. DELICIOUS selection - but the service the last couple of times certainly is not even close to being equal to the food!
