Phil's recently changed their menu ever so slightly. No more pre-built burgers - it's all build your own. This is a good thing because now you can pick as many "free" toppings as you want, all included in the $9.50-ish price of the burger & side. Back in the day, I think 4 toppings were included, and then you paid extra for additional ones. Heck, even a fried egg is a free topping. Some are premium and cost extra, but the egg is not. (I don't know why I need a fried egg on top of a burger, but it was there, so why not). Anyway, Phil's is a casual atmosphere and always provides quick & friendly service. I also appreciate that they have a grilled chicken burger kids meal option, along with TONS of choices for the grown ups. Oh, and kids eat free on Tuesdays. Yay!

A few minutes after submitting my first review, I received a private message from the owner Phil. He remembered handing me my to-go order and thanked me for my honest review. He explained that he has been away from this store while opening the new CBD location and apologized about the potato salad and said that he would make sure that he reminded the kitchen of the proper way to make it (and that it is homemade and not from Sysco). This is exactly what Yelp is for. Phil's response not only changed my experience, I changed a lunch meeting today so that I could go back to Phil's since he cared enough to respond to my review. I had almost the same thing today, except that I added the Crystal Wing sauce to my burger and go the steamed vegetables as a side. The sauce made a huge difference and the burger was great. The steamed vegetables were great too. The waitstaff is always extremely friendly. I will definitely be headed back to Phil's soon. It is funny how something like a simple response to a customer can go a long way. So many restaurant and small business owners do not understand this simple concept and unnecessarily chase away good customers. Thank you Phil.

The first build your own burger place in the area, as far as I know. Lots of options for meat, you can go as healthy or unhealthy as you want. Beef, bison, turkey, portobello mushroom, veggie, tuna, and the list goes on. You can get as simple or fancy as you want, its all in your hands! For those that can't make decisions easily they also have a non build a burger menu. They also have a burger of the month which is always pushing the creativity limits. Lots of apps too, mostly fried stuff. Make sure you save room for a shake! Few specials to throw at you...They have a happy hour every day and a different drink special each day but these are the ones that I can remember and are noteworthy: $15 bottle wine on Wednesdays...its menage a trois brand. $5 Abita pitchers on Thursdays.

Absolutely disgusting! I ordered their burger that was stuffed with cheese then fried, and their fries. My husband ordered their sausage burger. My burger was hands down the nastiest burger I've ever eaten. Wanted to throw up. Fries were awful! Never ever do I want to return. Sad because their staff were beyond sweet.

This place is great, just wish it had "burger" in the name. I honestly avoided it for a while because when I hear "Grill" I think Bar & Grill without the drinks almost like a dive restaurant .... This place is nothing of the sort, Staff was friendly and quick to seat us on a crowded lunch time. Selection was awesome (if your a burger fan) and the create your own like this is magnificent it wasn't to much very organized and not overwhelming. Burger was cooked HOW I ASKED this only the 4 or 5th time a place cooked it just the way I asked. ( that's saying a lot) Taste was just what I expected Price was Great it was about the same price if I would have went to burgerking or McDs I will soon be a regular to these wonderful "Grills"

Phil's Grill is basically the Tutti Frutti of hamburger joints. You can put as many topping that you want just like a kid putting gummy bears, chocolate syrup, sprinkles and strawberries. You pick the type of bun, the type of meat and then all the fixings. They have all the basics plus some exotic stuff as well. If you want Peanut butter and jalapenos then go for it. So many choices and combinations that it can be intimidating! I went with a sourdough bun, angus beef, pineapple, red onion, avacodo, bbq sauce and swiss. It was really good! The burger is juicy and hot and could stand alone with nothing on it. As a side I got the thin sliced onion rings which were really good too. My girlfriend got the fries as a side instead. This is where Ithink they can improve. These appear to be of the frozen Ore-Ida variety instead of fresh cut. They were soggy and not so good. They have options for vegetarians too as the offer a portabello mushroom burger. This location is my favorite of the bunch since parking is more plentyful and the restaurant itself is bigger with more seating.

Only been here once and I can't wait to go back. "Have it your way" burgers are fantastic! I finished the whole burger...which never happens. Fun atmosphere too.

Phil's grill has some delicious food. They have several locations and serve mostly burgers. You can get off the wall burgers like duck, or just normal beef. They definitely a great choice for a burger.

  • Matt R.

What can be better than building your own burger? I LOVE having a massive selection of random, awesome ingredients to stack on my burger. They also have an awesome selection of specialty burgers and very good daily specials. BOTTOM LINE: A solid burger joint in Harahan.

This was my first time at the this location as I normally go to the Severn location. I must say Sarah really is a great bartender and manager. She knows how to make a new guest feel at home. The service was spot on as was the conversation. The food was excellent but that is what I expect from Phil's.

    (5)
  • Bonnie L.

I can honestly say this is the only place I get burgers. Not just Phil's Grill, but this location specifically. It is definitely a couple of notches above the Severn location. They have the BEST fried pickles and their turkey burgers are the best I've ever had. The service is great and we never have to wait long, which is hard to believe since everything is so customized. Keep it up, Phil!

I've been wanting to try Phil's for a while. Unfortunately, it is next to impossible to find parking at the one in Metairie. (Apparently I'm not the only one with that problem based on the number of surrounding businesses that have signs saying "no Phil's Grill parking!") I finally made it out to Harahan and I've got to say, Phil's did not disappoint! I love, LOVE the fact that they have a DIY option for burgers that comes complete with a form that you fill out yourself and give to the waitress. You pick your meat (from regular beef, to turkey, to filet, to bison), pick your bread (or bed of your choice of lettuce), your sauce, your toppings, your side-- everything. You get the exact burger you want at that particular time. Very cool. They also had a number of pre-built burgers on the menu that were pretty tempting but I decided to save those for next time. The burger was delicious. Really, really delicious. The fries were cooked to perfection. My dining companion got onion rings and they were the real deal. It was so good! My only complaints (and they are minor): They serve Pepsi products. Ugh. But, I can get over it. And, the service was a little weak. Not bad, but not really great either. The waitress took our order pretty quickly and the food was brought out in a timely manner. But, my empty cup sat for a tad longer than it should have waiting for a refill. Like I said, minor complaints, just enough to keep Phil's at 4 stars instead of 5. But definitely not enough to keep me from coming back the next time I'm in Harahan with a hankering for a tasty burger.

I've visited the Severn location several times but this was my first visit to the Harahan location despite working nearby for a while now. Things have changed slightly since I last went to a Phil's Grill. Gone are the handful of pre-configured burgers; now it's entirely build-your-own. Also the prices and what you get for free have changed, but all for the good. Basically you pick your type of burger, or chicken, or alligator (yes, there's gator), etc. and pair it with a bun of your choice. Next pick your toppings, which are all free except for the "premium" ones. Previously you got two or three and were charged extra for additional. Lastly pick your sauce. You get one free and can pay for additional sauces. Add a side and you're in business. Speaking of sides, the fried pickles are killer as are the sweet potato fries. I haven't had a bad burger yet. Everything has been exactly to order, which isn't always the case at burger joints. So if you're out in Harahan and hungry, stop by Phil's Grill.

A local favorite neighborhood build your own burger concept, choose the type of meat, temperature, bun, toppings, sauces & sides. Good beer selection on tap, rotates monthly. Family friendly, good ambience, clean. Only downfall, cooking temps on burgers, almost always fail( over cooked) Ample parking & wheelchair accessable

  • Shannon P.

Went here with a few friends after our workout. It took 35 minutes to cook 3 bison burgers and they got all three orders wrong. And no, it wasn't busy at all. The food was decent, but the wait sucked.

Update: The owner contacted me via Yelp and apologized for the up-charge for getting it on lettuce. He also said they would change it when they reprint menus. Also, since my burgers were cooked perfectly the past two visits (since my initial review), I feel I have to up my score. Since the owner has shown he cares, and they are one of the few places that regularly cook red meat correctly, I honestly feel this establishment deserves 5 stars. 10/30/2012 Overall, this is a good burger joint, but I will start with the negative. My wife follows a "no grain" diet; when she get's a burger she doesn't eat the bread. Phil's Grill offers burgers on a bed of lettuce, but they charge an extra $0.99 for the option. I get lettuce on my burger and it's free. Sure, you get more lettuce without the bun, but I'm sure the cost does not justify the upcharge. I feel like we are being taken advantage of because my wife's diet is currently hip and mainstream. It is only a buck extra, so it isn't a big deal, but it still annoys me. I have been to this location 3 times and once my medium-rare burger was medium-well to well done. Due to the sauce on the burger, it wasn't as big a disappointment as other establishments. Most places overcook my medium-rare meat and Phil's Grill has cooked it correctly 2/3 of the time, so they seem to be doing a fair job in the kitchen. The sauces are good and the service is fair. There are a bunch of meats to choose from and numerable way's to customize your burger, but charging extra for a burger on lettuce instead of bread is a bit insulting, which is why I can't give this place four stars.

I frequently stop by for lunch and have the Tuna buger. It is a very thick cut of tuna and I order it rare with viniagrette souce along with other toppings too numerous to mention. It is consistently outstanding. I have not found such a good piece of fish for lunch for the price anywhere, hence, the reason I eat there so often.

This restaurant has an interesting concept. They mainly serve burgers which you slowly build by filling in the check boxes in their menu where you get to choose the type of patty (a variety of choices), the type of bun/salad, type of sauce, type of topping, type of side, and type of cheese. It can range from being small in size to burgers that are held together with a steak knife. I ordered a side of steamed veggies to go with mine but regretted it cause it turned out to be a bowl of zucchinis and squash. Thought it'd be broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots. Server was very cheery and very helpful to us first timers.

I came here with my family last weekend...and none of us got the burgers. I know we're weird. So take my review for all the non-burger options. Nieces got the kid's grilled cheese and the non-picky one loved it and crammed her fries on her bun to make a "cheese fry sandwich." Clearly she is a genius. The picky one ate a couple of fries and the ate 1/4 of her sandwich in exchange for playing on my phone. However the non-picky kid would not eat/drink her root beer float because the ice cream had "pepper in it." The restaurant has recently switched to New Orleans ice cream (yay!) and are using a vanilla bean ice cream which weirds out 7 year olds. E had the veggie burger which was kind of gross looking (really black bean paste w/ black beans in it?) and he said was pretty bland. I had the sashimi tuna salad, rare. Tuna was OK but not great and again the cheapest ingredient (the lettuce) was tired and kind of gross looking. My brother had the grilled chicken salad and seemed to like it. My SiL had a baked potato and fried pickles. Both were OK. The service was good and ice tea refills were plentiful.

Stopped in at Phil's Grill about 6:30 last Monday and we were seated right away. They had steady traffic after that. Eventually people had to wait for a table, on a Monday night! Popular place. I had the Jackson Square burger. Topped it with a fried egg using my Yelp check in bonus. Nice treat. Had their sugar coated sweet potato fries to go with it. My wife had the burger in a bowl (no bun). Grilled turkey with lettuce and spinach w/ cheese, avocado and a pineapple slice. Different way to call it a salad. Service was acceptable for a burger place. Food came in a reasonable amount of time as each burger is cooked to order.

I think it's possible to have a good tasting veggie burger but I will not find it here. I ordered a veggie burger on a jalapeno bun with bbq sauce, lettuce, tomato, red onions and a side of fries. The veggie burger was so awful. It had the consistency of thick mashed potatoes and it kept falling apart, yuck. I thought they forgot the BBQ sauce until my waitress pointed out the few drops on the bottom bun. Speaking of, the bun was nothing too special and the fries were ok. The waitress said the veggie burger is good and I see other positive reviews about it so either I just had a bad one or they haven't had a goof veggie burger. However, I have to give a star for at least offering a veggie option (AND it's not just a garden burger or boca). I have a feeling I'll be back because my boyfriend and his roommate loved their build your own burgers. I'll try something else on the menu.

I went back the next day to Phil's and i had the sliders. It was three mini burgers but trust nothing was small about the taste and i was really full. I think i'll try a veggie or turkey burger next. Another thing i was impressed about was i received a phone call from a employee asking me was i pleased with my order. Big ups to Phil's Grill.

  • AC S.

I've been to Phil's Grill 4 or 5 times. I have tasted a few of their burgers, but every time I go I get the Uptowner. It is a turkey burger on your choice of bun (I usually get the onion bun) with Havarti cheese, shredded cabbage, and a horseradish honey mustard (which I really like). It's a decent burger but almost every time I get it, it falls apart within 3 seconds on attempting to eat. Also I'm more impressed with the sauce than the actual meat. The turkey patty is pretty basic. The one thing I am definitely not impressed with are the sides. I have tried the regular fries, the sweet potato fries, the potato salad , and the fried pickle chips. Both options of fries were OK. Nothing special. Potato salad was great! Only side item I could see myself ordering again. But the fried pickles were the worst. I've ordered them 3 times. Every time I get them I hope for them to be better and they just aren't. And it's now 3 strikes and it's out. They are always unbearably salty. I eat two of them and want no more. So I wouldn't recommend them. The only big upside to Phil's Grill is the options, which are plentiful. If you want an alligator burger or a bison burger with your choice of strange and/or interesting toppings, this is the place to be. But if you're looking for the best burger in town, this is not it.

    (3)
  • Karen H.

My husbands fave local place for burgers. It's very good build-your-own style burgers and sandwiches. The fried chicken sandwich is very good. It's also a build your own style. The fried pickle chips are delicious!

  • Jeff O.

Very nice burger . I really wish they had some way to test out some of the flavor combinations . Maybe a 'slider like' order of 4 mini burgers . But no complaints, service was quick and attentive, burger was full of flavor.

Fun creating your own sandwich from the menu! Fantastic hamburger - steak, egg and avocado on a wheat bun. The bun got a little soggy, but tasted great. The waitress was soooo friendly and really gave us lots of great tips. Got a immediate coupon for checking in on Yelp from the manager.

I've increased my rating on here because the owner of the restaurant reached out to me and offered to make it right. I really appreciate that. It's nice to know the owners truly care about the customer's experience. I haven't had the opportunity to go back yet, but I do plan on giving it another try now.

Best Burgers in town. Can't get any better family friendly service anywhere in town. Totally kid friendly. The entire staff treats everyone that comes in like family. Food choices are amazing: the burgers (amazing), fried mushrooms and pickles, my 6 year old loves the Smore's milkshakes, and my wife LOVES the chicken sandwich wrapped in crushed Zapps potato chips. Yeah that's right. You know it's good when your little one (6 years old) would rather go to Phil's Grill over Mc Donald's...

Phil's Grill in Harahan is one of my absolute favorite burger destinations. If you have a powerful 'burg spell come up on you, then this is a great place to fulfill your desires. All of your meaty dreams can come true here. First you choose your meat and how you want it cooked (regular hamburger, grilled chicken, turkey burger, tuna steak, portobello mushroom, sirloin burger, buffalo burger, sausage burger, alligator sausage burger, fried chicken made with crumbled up Zapp's chips and the big daddy fat city burger - ground beef stuffed with cheese, battered and deep fried). Then you choose your bun or bed of greens. After that you can choose a sauce, everything from the mundane to the who the hell would put that on a burger (italian dressing?) is represented here. Next you choose your toppings, many of them are free but some are premium toppings that you have to pay extra for. Finally you choose your cheese and your side. You do all of this on a worksheet which works well since I've never seen an order come out wrong. They used to have pre-configured burgers but they have dropped all of that now; it's strictly build-your-own. Here are some winning combinations 1) Angus, Sourdough, tomato, onion, sauteed onion, bacon, blue cheese 2) Angus, french bread, cheddar, bacon, sauteed onions, peanut butter 3) Sausage, french bread, bacon, fried egg, cheddar, tomato 4) Grilled chicken, sourdough, buffalo sauce, onion, jalapenos, bacon, blue cheese 5) Fried chicken, sourdough, fried egg, onion, lettuce, tomato, pepperjack 6) Fat city, sourdough, roasted red pepper sauce, fried egg, bacon, sauteed onions and mushrooms, feta Phil's also has some great sides. The spicy potato salad is excellent, it's smokey and salty and creole mustardy with a little bit of spice. It's my favorite side, but the sweet potato fries are also really good. The fried pickles are pretty good if fried pickles are your thing. The beer selection here is small but decent. They usually have 3 or 4 Nola brews available. I've seen an IPA here before but I don't think they carry one full time. They do carry the Nola seasonal for sure. Hopefully they'll start stocking hopitoulas here now that it's in cans. Most importantly this place doesn't reek of decaying organic material like the location on Severn. All in all, I think this is an excellent place to get a tasty, juicy burger built exactly to your specifications. I highly recommend it.

    (4)
  • Chrissy F.

Love the burger selections. Cheeseburger soup is awesome and I am not a soup person. The burger that is breaded and fried is the best. Zapps chicken good too. Service was decent. I like how this location has booth seating.

I just sat at the bar for the last 2 hours & SARAH waited on me & she was DELIGHTFULL. We talked like we were old girlfriends. I highly recommend sliding up to the bar & striking up a conversation with her.

Okay, how glutenous do we need to be, people? Yes, the flavors of burger combinations are good but who needs a burger that's a foot tall? I don't. I usually just order the kid's burger which is not bad! They actually cook everything pretty well here but I think the portion sizes are ridiculous.

    (3)
  • Megan H.

Though the menu has changed and become more expensive, that is understandable for the economy. The burgers are awesome and there are plenty of toppings to add. The choices for sides are also plentiful. Good place to go for decent burgers

  • Mary E.

I've been to both the Harahan and Severn locations and found them to be equally good. I love the build your own burger concept, and the variety of toppings offered is amazing. My current fave is wing sauce and blue cheese. The beef burger and the hot sausage patty are both excellent. The fries, both sweet potato and regular are both good. Every time I've been, the service has been excellent and very fast. Sometimes there is a wait for a table, as it is a popular place, but I've never had a long wait, probably because the service is so fast. A vegetarian friend I went there with said she enjoyed the veggie burger. I would highly recommend Phil's for the burger lover!

    (5)
  • Dana R.

If this is your first time going to a Phil's grill, dont go to this location. Go to the Severn one (original). They have the BEST veggie burgers ever, and their baked potatoes are great. Disappointed that they now upcharge for avocado though. I also love how you can write in your own order for create a burger. That way there is no miscommunication between you and the waiter when giving the order. The atmosphere is okay, just at this location (harahan) took forever to get the food, and the server took forever to greet us / take drink order. Severn location is way better than Harahan. I'm just sayin'....

  • J.C. W.

Today the sweetest server on the planet was there. Burgers are great...but fried pickles take the cake. I love the burgerpalooza project too. This place allows u to be creative while they do all the work. Can't beat it! @philsgrill

Whenever I have a craving for a hamburger, this place has not disappointed. Ordered a la carte, they have a whole page of toppings to choose from to individualize your burger. I need this fix once a month. So good. Sides are good too.

So disappointed tonight. I ordered the black bean turkey chili expecting another Phil's Grill quality meal and was sadly disappointed. The chili was grainy, like they had put the groud turkey in a blender and pressed purée. Definitely not the hearty chunky chili you'd expect at a burger joint. Just burgers from now on, because I have had NO negative experiences with that.

  • Sophia K.

Grilled pineapple margarita was 2-1 and was delicious. Not sure how much alcohol was in it but that's always the risk when it's deal of the day. Sweet potatoe fries lacked flavor and weren't quite cooked enough but still were devoured. The bison burger was terrific and i eat red meat about twice a year!

Awesome place... Great service, Great burgers, great beer... and I tell you I can have a field day in there. I Love burgers and I was like a kid in the candy store picking out everything to put on it. The only problem was deciding what else to throw on it! Good Stuff, I want one now! LOL

Quick, easy, yummy burger joint. I ordered the Bywater Bird (burger of the month.) I highly recommend the Bywater bird, if they still have it. Its was a TUR-DU-CKEN patty, with cheese, & cranberry. Sooo Good. Order it with the grilled veggies. Fantastic.

I first discovered the Severn location a few years ago & have always loved the fact that I can "build my own burger". Needless to say, I was thrilled when I found out that a Harahan location was to open. I've been to the Harahan location 4 times & every single visit has been awesome but my best visit was with co-workers on a Friday. We arrived about 1pm & were immediately seated. Our server took our drink order w/in a few minutes of us being seated. Our drinks were brought out very quickly & our orders were taken. Even though almost every table, plus numerous seats at the bar were occupied, we had our food in about 20 minutes. We were able to eat & pay & be back at the office w/in our allotted lunch hour. The service was excellent & as always, the burgers were hot, juicy & AWESOME!!

I've enjoyed every meal I've had at Phil's! If you're trying to "eat lean" just review the menu carefully and ask your server questions about how the food is prepared to stay on track. There are GREAT options to choose from either way when you want a truly tasty meal.

The "check-the-box" burger restaurant is an awesome concept, and Phil's was fortunate enough to be one of the first to utilize it in the New Orleans area. Unlike some of the other ones I have been to, Phil's doesn't have those "premium" topping choices, like sauteed mushrooms, for $1 extra. Rather, they are all-inclusive in the add 3 toppings for free category. A unique factor is the meat offerings: not only angus beef, but also hot sausage blend, turkey, alligator, bison, etc. The sides are pretty good - sweet fries were great; french fries were a bit over-salted; and turkey chili was a little greasy but tasty. They also have a nice variety of beers on tap. I'll definitely be frequenting the Phil's in my neighborhood.

Bison burger was so delicious. A little pricey but worth it...I ate the whole huge burger! Worth the calories :)

The food is very good. The service, not so much. We went to the Harahan location twice in the last two weeks. The first time we went the service and food were excellent. The second time we went the food was very good, but the service was HORRIBLE!!!! I guess it all depends on which server you get.

  • Melissa B.

Been here many times, but the quality keeps going downhill. $1.99 extra for 2 pieces of bacon, not sure what kind of bacon...today my burger had chunks of powder seasoning sitting on top of patty, imagine bitting into that. The quality's just not the same compared to when they first opened this location. River Ridge / Harahan folks like quality. If II'm gonna pay $13 I might as well go to copelands or cow bell.

Excellent burgers. Their slogan says it all. Wings are also pretty good. They only have to sauces but they still are pretty good. Open dining area. Prices are fair. Recommend the fried pickles also!

My friend Tracy (shout out!) and I had dinner at Phil's Grill this week. We were looking to have dinner in Harahan and she suggested Phil's Grill, which I hadn't been to before. The place was packed at 7 o'clock on a Tuesday night. We asked the hostess how long the wait for a table would be and her response was, "I have no idea. Things are really hectic right now." Hmm, ok. I was just looking for an estimate, like would it be a few minutes or an hour, but apparently that was unattainable. That being said, we made our way to the bar and took a seat there, only to discover that there was some kind of filming going on involving New Orleans Ice Cream. The service at the bar was ok. So, minus one star for less than stellar service, but I'm going to attribute it to the commotion being caused by the filming. I didn't come here for the service though, I came here for the food, so let's get to it. Just like most of the other reviewers, I love the build your own burger concept. What is cool is that unlike at other places that have an unofficial build your own burger concept (say, O'Henrys), at Phil's Grill you actually get a worksheet included in your menu that allows you to circle exactly what you want on your burger. You get to choose the type of meat you want (beef, turkey, bison, etc.), the type of bun that you want (sundried tomato, jalapeno, wheat, etc.), your choice of sauce (garlic aioli, tiger sauce, steak sauce, roasted red pepper garlic dressing, etc.), your choice of three toppings (lettuce, pineapple, pickles, mushrooms, tomato, bacon, etc.), your choice of cheese (swiss, bree, cheddar, etc.), and finally your choice of side (sweet potato fries, baked potato, potato salad, etc.). All for just $9.49! So many wonderful choices! The burger was delicious. I ordered mine medium and it was cooked to perfect. The fat patty was juicy and flavorful. My toppings (cheddar cheese, pickles, sautéed mushrooms, and garlic aioli) added some extra yum. The side of sweet potato fries was ok. I recommend getting the Smores milkshake. While I didn't have one, two little boys sitting next to be did and it looked and smelled so very delicious. Best part? The server will melt the marshmallows with a mini blow torch right in front of you. Short summary for this long review: Phil's Grill makes a good burger. Apparently people know that, so there might be a wait. My verdict is that the wait is probably worth it.

Unique style of ordering...the concept of building your burger on a pad with a pencil on a tear-off sheet by circling your choices all the way down to sauces and style of bun made it fun, interactive, and novel...and reassuringly accurate. I chose a rare tuna burger with a side of homemade beef chili and both were outstanding. The decor was clean and simple, perhaps non-descript, but the food really spoke for itself. In my book, combined with the fast and attentive service, that makes Phil's Grill a winner.

I've eaten at Phil's Grill in River Ridge about ten times and I won't eat there ever again. My complaints are under cooked or over cooked burgers... you have about a 30% chance of your order being correct. The last straw for me was a very loud talking person standing at a booth near where I was sitting. I know that this is not fine dining but it was loud, consistant and annoying..... come to find out it was the General Manager of Phil's Grill having a BS session with some people he knew. Like I said, I won't be back.

The burgers are good, but they aren't the best you can get around here. I think the gourmet burger from New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood is tastier. I think its the angus Phil's use-it doesn't have enough fat and tends to be really dry. The sausage mix burger is juicier. If you build your own burger it can get pricy. They started charging extra recently for bacon and avocado. I paid an extra 1.50 to get a 1/16 of an avocado slice and a piece of bacon. You can get a burger at Chili's that is loaded with both for less. The fried pickles are tasty, and the fried mushrooms is a good deal as well. My fav dish if the grilled chicken salad with honey horseradish sauce-very tasty and zingy. It get crowded fast so show up right at 11, or around 4:30 to get the best service.

If you like tomatoes, lettuce and onions in your hamburger, better take your own. The most you can say about the meat is that it is edible. I been there a couple of times and will not be back.

Well made burgers, fresh toppings, decent prices. The place has a nice energy about it. They aren't afraid to cook it the way you ask - medium rare for me. Crispy onion strings are a nice change from fries.

I love this place. I would give it 5 stars if for two things, it were a little cheaper and more consistant. I always get the fat city burger and I just cant bring myself to order anything else. I have been going here since I have been in town(over 5 years) and I always seem to make it once a month for my fix. I have built my own and it was good, as well. It is good for a family joint for the children, too.

Great service and great food. I love the concept of being able to build your own burger. The staff was very attentive and the food was fresh and delicious. Good atmosphere for a burger joint.

Phil's is great! A large variety of selections assures that your burger experience will be different every visit. An incredibly friendly staff makes each trip enjoyable. And, the possibility of building a burger to fit your personal fitness goals makes it a great place for anyone eating lean or wanting to enjoy a good burger and a cold beer.

The veggie burger here is amazing. The flavor is great and I love the fact you can build it however you like. The service was good and the atmosphere was great with the Saints game going on. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is the texture of the burger it was crumbly. This should not deter you though I will definitely be back.

This is the only place that I know of where you can get a buffalo meat burger as one of the selections. You can customize the toppings, buns (or no bun), sauces, cheeses, sides and have it brought to you. Great casual laid-back atmosphere. I I highly recommend..

Fresh ingredients are all they use with their famous build-your-own-burger. (If you check into Yelp, you can get a 4th burger topping free) We ordered their Irish Channel Nachos. They are short crispy steak fries covered in chili, grilled jalapenos, cheese, sliced tomatoes, side of sour cream and some type of relish they make. Delish! Burgers were jaw popping. Corn was like you were at a neighborhood BBQ. Oh, they have cilantro butter for the corn. What? I know, right. Make a point to stop here. Our waitress was friendly and attentive and seemed happy, which is a nice change from what you can get at some places. Nice job, Phil!

BLUF: In my mission to get the city's best burger, this one is very high on the list. Awesome options for building your own burger. They forgot my cheese though so they lost a star and the garlic aoli had no pop. Place looks like a burger join which I like. You sit down and tear your order from a note pad and circle what you want. I like that style. There are a ton of things to choose from. Most are included in the price and most sound amazing. Several differnt types of meat to choose from and different ways it can be prepared. All the toppings in the world (except pb which surprised me). I got the standard toppings plus a fried egg. The egg wasn't runny though which was a shame. Comes with a choice of side too and all looked great. I got the sweet potato fries and they were pretty good. I'd love to try the others. Def love the build your own concept and I loved what they had to choose from. That being said, the forgotten cheese was a major blow to the overall experience (I dont send things back). The special sauce was undetected which also was a shame; plus the runny egg. The burger was very good and high quality but the toppings were disappointing. Staff was great. It is a great burger place and I would def go back but I would keep my fingers crossed on the toppings and prob try all new ones to hopefully get a burger that popped.

Phil's Grill is a specialty burger restaurant that makes customizable burgers to your liking. You get a paper menu with an array of multiple choice options and a pen to circle your answers. You start off by choosing your choice of meat (i.e. Angus, Turkey, Bison, Grilled Chicken, Alligator, etc.) and work your way down to the selection of buns, veggies, condiments, toppings, and sides. I thought I knew what my ideal burger would be until I saw how many options there were. It ended up taking me good while to submit my test... err... I mean menu. With options such as fried egg, avocado, pineapple rings, and chimichurri sauce, one must be very careful with their selection or else he or she may develop what some psychologists call "burger envy" or "burger regret". In all honesty though, some ingredients don't work well with others so be careful. Also, if you put too many things in your burger, you'll end up eating it with a knife and fork. I ordered the Bison burger on whole wheat buns with avocado ranch sauce, pickles, shredded lettuce, shredded cabbage, sliced tomato, sauteed onions, fried egg (oh yeah!), avocado (+99 cents. Free with check-in offer), and American cheese with a side of regular french fries. Needless to say it was a messy battle and went down with a knife and fork. Good selection of beer on tap. Excellent pair with a beefy burger!

Omg the best burger place ever! Was visiting out of state. I am vegetarian so I had a veggie burger with corn on the side my husband had regular one with fries. After trying my corn he wishes he had ir too.

Way beyond your average burger joint; Phil's offers a burger-building culinary experience. With selections including Angus, chicken, portobello, tuna, bison, & alligator, there's ample room for the conservative and adventurous eater. And wholly-moly what a range of sauces and toppings; it'll take numerous visits before you begin repeating orders. Ambiance is family casual, with table booth, and long bench seating options. There is a bar section in the back with two TVs, usually tuned-in without volume, unless LSU or the Saints are playing.

This place has good food and good service, but very expensive. My boyfriend and I ate there one night and were happy with our food but, for close to $60 for two (with no alcohol and no extras) , we could go to a fancy place.

I've been eating at Phil's since the beginning, and, despite a few hiccups, continue to frequent it on a semi regular basis. The last few times I've been, the burgers have been cooked just right, well seasoned, and dressed exactly the way my table has ordered (this hasn't always been the case). The whole concept of "build your own burger" is fun, and Phil's is quite generous with the amount of toppings they serve. Their sweet potato fries are also quite good, actually among the best I've had.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Phil's Grill was our regular spot when we lived in River Ridge. The food was good, the atmosphere and we had good value for the price. I often went there with my family for a quick dinner as well as for lunch with my coworkers.

For years, I have been hearing the hype on how I need to try Phil's Burgers. Well it finally happened one day quite recently as we happened to be in Harahan and needed a quick lunch. A quick search of Yelp revealed that Phil's Grill was less than a mile from my location, and this is where my story begins. I like the idea of a "build your own" burger joint, and I think Phil's has a great concept. The menu has a certain novelty about it that is intriguing, but it works. If you've never been to Phil's, the steps to ordering a burger are as follows: 1. Choose a burger (8 options) 1.5 Or choose a premium burger (4 options) Choose how you want it cooked (rare, med rare, med, med well or well) 2. Choose a bun (6 options) 3. Choose a sauce (19 options) 4. Choose unlimited toppings (16 options) 5. Choose premium toppings (7 options) 6. Choose a cheese (9 options) 7. Choose a side (12 options) For a first timer, the menu may seem a little overwhelming, especially if there are a lot of people waiting to place their order. But it really is pretty simple, and pretty logical once you see how it works. Phil's serves up a 1/2 pound burger of quality beef, and quality beef is the key to any good burger. There are over a million possible combinations on how to make your burger. I do like that fact that you can order your burger rare, even though I prefer mine cooked medium rare. But there are several restaurants out there that will not cook your burger any rarer than medium. So kudos to Phil's. As for the food, I opted for the Lagniappe burger, which consisted of a patty made from 1/2 hot sausage and 1/2 ground beef. To me, it was the best of both worlds, as I love hot sausage, but also wanted to try their burger. It was a home run, as the hot sausage was not too overpowering and you still got that great burger taste. By checking in with my mobile app, I earned a free extra paid topping and opted for the fried egg. Talk about a home run. This burger was not for the faint of heart or for anyone with high cholesterol (LOL), but the taste was absolutely phenomenal. For my side dish, I got the spicy potato salad. I'm not sure if the heat comes from cayenne, crab boil or both; but it's one of the best potato salads I have ever eaten. The wife got the grilled chicken w/ avocado & sweet potato fries so that our son could share. I took an obligatory sample for Yelping purposes and was please with the tenderness of the chicken filet. The sweet potato fries were also pretty darn good. Unfortunately, I was too stuffed to try one of their shakes, but hopefully I can go back soon. All in all, I am definitely a fan.

Great burgers and a wide selection of toppings to choose from. Especially like the roasted red pepper & garlic dressing. I really love the Turkey burger from here, it's not dry and is very tasty. If you like burgers Phil's is the place to go.

I love that you can build your own burger. Each selection is different from the other. The service was impeccable and I still haven't gone through all the toppings.

Shit... I need to write this review before this place spoils me and my fellow elites this weekend with a VIP running of the bulls experience New Orleans-style. I don't want anyone thinking I'm giving this place five stars for any other reason than it truly deserves five stars. I've been here about a half dozen times now, but I still remember the very first time last year, and how time consuming it was deciding on my burger. With all the options, I haven't done the calculation but there's probably over 9,000 burger permutations, more if you count the sides too... i.imgur.com/205a344.gif Seriously though, it's way over 9,000... probably more like 9 million potential burger meals. i.imgur.com/Q2vVK8a.gif Be ready to spend a lot of time figuring out which type of meat you most want, followed by sauce, cheese, bun, toppings, side, and I contend this is also a requirement - milkshake. Don't fool yourself, this process could take an hour. You might want to grab something to eat before you come here to eat. Besides the incredible bounty of burger options here, the burgers are quite good, whatever combo you get. I have yet to be disappointed. I do tend to favor a few choices by this point but by all means, get whatever you feel will most match your particular craving of the moment. My personal preferences... Burger - Beef/sausage blend Sauce - Tiger sauce Side - Fried pickles Shake - Chocolate peanut butter The rest of the options I haven't settled on any one particular choice yet. Variety is the spice of life right? Well Phil certainly knows that. Another thing I love about this place is the service. We were fortunate enough to be first served by a super sweet former sommelier, and she really left an impression with us. Also, apparently the owner is very involved with the local community and I think it's awesome that there's always a burger of the month that goes to benefit others instead of the company's bottom line. That's a business model I can get behind. Basically, this is my current favorite place to grab a burger. It may not be the absolute best you've ever tried, but that could partially be your own fault by not getting the proper toppings. With the number of options available here, there's no reason you shouldn't walk out happy. If you're somehow disappointed, just try some other choices next time. You're bound to find something you love. And don't forget the shake! (...or its friendly advice concerning table manners) i.imgur.com/FNC0pTn.gif

Ate at Phil's for the first time today. Nothing incredible. I had a well done burger with a cup of chili. Burger was very dry (almost tough). Well done just means no pink not give me the oldest piece of meat and char the heck out of it. Chili was barely warm and was cold within 5 min. I really wanted to like the place because a friend of mine really enjoys going there. I'm not interested in going back.

Phil's grill is a great place for a great burger. In January, their special burger is a Venison Burger. The Cumberland sauce, lightly sweet complimented the Venison beautifully. The Havarti was a nice complimentary touch. I added Jalapenos and a fried egg to mine, both were a nice addition. I was not a fan of the Cheese Fries, too much cheese, not well grated and too few fries made for a cold, greasy lump when my burger arrived. However, this is a faux pas I can overlook with the beauty of the burger itself. The Spinach and Tomato were a beautiful dressing on the Onion roll bun. It is a crowd pleaser, that's for certain. Meet me there for lunch, tell them yer "Big Easy Daddy" sent you.. Stay Big Stay Easy, and Whose Yer Daddy?

My family had a great weeknight dinner here last week. We were all able to personalize our meals exactly the way we like which is something that wont happen at home! We chose different meats such as the phillet( tender ground filet ) and lean ground bison burger, onion bun and jalapeno bun, etc. The toppings are endless. I had a hard time finding the perfect combination. Sauces like jalapeno aoli, creole aoli and truffle aoli had me in aoli heaven. How could I choose just one? Well after careful consideration we all seem to make excellent choices and left with full bellies. They do offer a burger of the week which always sounds awesome just in case youre too indecisive. It was tuesday so the kids ate free! They finished off their dinner with ice cream shakes. I was tempted to get an 'adult shake' - maybe next time. Everything we tried from fried mushrooms to fried pickles, fries, burgers and 3 different flavored shakes were all 5 star quality. They cater to us yelpers by giving out a free premium topping like thick bacon or avocado which saves about $2 just for checking in. Word around town is this is the best location to go to and based on our visit- I wont argue.

This place is alright, I don't think it has the best burgers, well not the beef anyway. I actually prefer Perrin's burgers over this place because Perrin's seasons their burgers. This place you can put all kinds of stuff on the burgers but I believe the burger itself should be seasoned with at least salt. My husband got the buffalo burger and he loved it but I wasn't impressed with my burger, I honestly could've made a better one at home. I do think they have wonderful shakes but they are definitely over priced for the size they give you. The service I had wasn't spectacular either. I saw my server Celeste (pretty sure that was her name) when she took my order and dropped my food. She never once came back to see if I needed something more to drink and then I had to flag her down to get the check. I don't think I'll be back too often to this place, only if my husband wants buffalo or I feel like getting a shake. There are better burgers out there.

I've been all over town trying to get a good burger- but this place did it right. They have a unique menu that gives you a lot of options for building the perfect burger which is great; jalapenos, egg, bacon, bluecheese, love it. More important, the bun was fresh and delicious and the burger was cooked to spec. I'd eat here every day if the doc would let me.

As I dined contentedly at Phil's, the idea came to mind to say "I got my phill at Phil's". Until, that is, I saw the near-identical slogan in giant letters on the wall across the room. I don't need originality, anyway: this review's primary judgement on Phil's burgers comes from a guest voice, one of the diners in our party: "This is the best hamburger I have ever had." I cannot disagree. Since that first experience I've finished off a couple of child's burgers and ordered on of my own, and my companion's assessment stands. My only complaint, if it can be called that, was that there was too much meat, grilled onions, and cheese for the bun to be easily managed, so I had to resort to knife and fork. Well, boo-hoo-hoo; most burger joints would do well to aspire to this kind of problem. You can't down a Phil's burger like a 99-cent drive-thru value menu special, and that's a good thing. A visiting burger aficionado from Pennsylvania said, "this really is a good burger". That's high praise, considering that the source of that comment is also the subject of Ernie K Doe's most famous song ("she thinks her advice is the Constitution" and all that). Across multiple visits with multiple people, every burger has been cooked perfectly every time. That kind of consistency is rare (or medium-well, but my pun obscures the point, does it not?) . It's an excellent burger, and that's just the stock Angus offering. They have a grilled "philet" option we have yet to try.** The kitchen exhibits expertise in more than just beef. A "tuna salad" was offered by the waiter as a special. I chose that while envisioning the typical scoop of cold, mayo-based sandwich filler. She then asked "how do you want your tuna cooked?" That's a very good sign when ordering "tuna salad". Rather than "something just for the non-beef eaters", this turned out to be sublime (and I think lime was in there somewhere, too): medium-rare (red inside, seared outside) tuna slices mixed with a crisp sautee of asparagus, shallots, and other delightful greens in a vinegar-based dressing. This dish would have been right at home on a china plate atop white linen at a much more expensive "fine dining" restaurant. The "mahi-mahi burger" special a couple weeks later was intriguing. "Do you grind up the mahi-mahi?" I asked. "No, that's just the name; it's a filet served with mango-based sauce." I overcame my fear of overly-sweet mango sauces and was rewarded with one of the best fish sandwiches I've had: a perfectly grilled, thick slab of mahi-mahi dressed with tangy Caribbean flavor. Mango, yes; mango is all you taste, no. Phil's burger ordering system is a sheet of paper one marks up and gives to the waiter, much the same as ordering sushi. These seem a little low-class at first, but I have come to appreciate the ability to contemplate and then select from the enormous selection of toppings and sides (and even meats) without having to recount it all to waiter when it's time to order. That paper menu is forgotten when what comes to the table leaves you feeling like you really got away with a five-star meal at a three-star price--which, of course, translates into five full stars here. **For an entertaining read, go read Lee Iacocca's description of how Henry Ford II's personal chef in the executive suite once answered the question, "How *do* you make such delicious burgers?"
