Always real good BBQ. Went up there this evening (6:30pm) to get a tasty chicken platter and they were closed. Sign on door says starting March 1, they are closing at 3pm instead of 8pm (Tues-Thur). Very disappointed. Please update hours on website. Why have a website showing your hours if it's not correct. Smh!!

Atmosphere is cute & rustic. Food was good. Corn salad a must try. Waitress very pleasant.

Tuesday's Smoked Burger special was a terrible experience. The service was rude and took forever, not even busy (no surprize there). The website prices are less than the actual menu price, an automatic strike there. Every topping was an extra charge. I don't know about you, but that is infuriating to order a burger or baked potato and then get nickle & dimed for every condiment you want on it. That 2.50 potato comes out to $5 bucks by the time you load it up. Pretty B.S. money grab for a BBQ joint.

Has to be one of my favorite BBQ joints. The meat is always cooked wonderfully and don't get me started on the sauces! The potato salad has a little spice to it (I believe from adding crab boil) and is always one of my go to side dishes. The employees are always friendly and fast. I enjoy being able to see into the food prep areas to see what's going on. Everything appears to be clean and in good repair. Definitely come check this place out!

Let me start by saying this place is great. The place is clean and appears rustic. The employees are fast and friendly. The prices are modest and probably a better deal than most BBQ joints. So the place is great, the food makes it even better. I can speak for most items on the menu because I'm addicted to the beef on bun. It's prepared with care each time and they're very generous with the portions. The beef is tender and smokey. It tends to be on the drier side of my preference at times, but it almost compliments the smokey taste and slightly toasted bun. If you're still reading, and can't tell, I love this place! If you're in the mood for BBQ this is the place. Forget Dickey's. I will say Dickey's brisket is more tender, but I just prefer the flavor of hillbilly's. You won't be disappointed by any means.

I went with a co worker. Her chicken was cold and old. We sent it back. My brisqut was cold. The meets seemed like they might have be left-overs fromt he day before. I also had a side of chile. The chile had a very off putting flavor. Over all we were both very dissapointed.

We ordered some lunch to go from here recently. We weren't sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. I got the pulled pork plate with baked beans and a baked potato. The meat was tender and good. I liked that the beans had a slight kick to them. (There were small pieces of jalapeno mixed in.) My boyfriend got the combo plate with the pork and brisket. The brisket was just as good also. The bbq sauce was a bit watery. We did not care for it too much. Since we had brought our food home we had other sauces we could use. Overall, it's a simple little place with really good quality meat. I would definitely go back.

This discovery was brought to me by Yelp. I happened to be in the neighborhood and love BBQ so I thought I'd try it out. The lunch special with the sandwich was a great deal and tasty. The place was clean and on the verge of sterile in atmosphere with kitschy country styled accents. Bathroom was tidy. The staff was polite and efficient. I let myself get too hungry and was relieved they weren't busy and able to bring me food quickly. Sometimes when places are slow it takes an inexplicable length of time to get served. So grateful this was not the case. Seems to me I had a corn salad and baked beans as sides. Good selections, not stellar. The reason for 5 stars is it was exactly what I needed when I needed it. It seems individually owned and operated, I strive to support businesses like this whenever possible. There are so many chains.

This place is rated as 1 of the top BBQ locations in the New Orleans area. I can see why. The brisket was wonderful, the potato salad yummy and the baked beans delicious. The ladies running the counter are friendly and accommodating. You will be pretty sure you are lost when you look for the place - it is about as far down Hickory as you can go but it will be worth the search.

Absolutely one of my top 3 BBQ joints! Let's start with what's really important to a BBQ joint...the MEAT! Pulled pork and brisket is sooo tender and juicy as well as having a hint of smoky flavor to it. The ribs have their own red rub that has some spice and leaves them very moist and juicy. There are 2 sauces that mix well with the meat...regular and sweet. Both are vinegar based and very tangy with a little spice. The only difference between the sauces is the sweet has brown sugar added to it. Either way, the sauces are fabulous. Hillbilly have 6 sides....some unique. The potato salad is different from anywhere I have had as it is made with some kind of mayo or sour cream base that resembles remoulade sauce with red bell peppers and red potatoes. Highly recommend it! I also love to accompany it with corn salad that is corn mixed in some kind of vinegar with green onions and tomatoes. I have never been anywhere that has anything like it! Slow is crunchy and has some kind of vinegar to it and is also unique. Baked beans have a real sweet and smoky flavor to them. They also do baked potatoes and hobo potatoes which is the baked potato in a cup. Beside the BBQ, the one special that they do only on Thursdays that people really beat the door down to get is the Smoky Chicken Salad! Best chicken salad ever with a smoky taste and mixed with the same ingredients as the potato salad. There is one complaint though with Hillbilly...stay away from the chicken! The chicken salad is amazing but the smoked chicken is poor. It makes no sense how a place that does pork, brisket, ribs, and chicken salad and sides so well can do smoked chicken so bad. So stay away from the chicken except for the chicken salad! Even if the chicken is bad, every thing else is so delicious and unique...it only deserves a 5.

The ribs and beans were excellent. The chicken was horrible. It was so bland and terrible tasting that I had to return it. I don't remember last time I returned food at a restaurant. They were fast during lunch and the customer service was good.

great food and service. Meat is smoked with sauce on side. Ribs were so good they do not require sauce

Hillbilly is alright. They moved to a new location, so there is more seating than before. Service is still definitely hit & miss. The food is good, but nothing spectacular. I do like the coleslaw, since they make theirs with vinaigrette instead of creamy slop. Probably the best BBQ in the 'burbs, anyway.

Heard about this place from a Food Critic. My wife and I decided to try it out. Glad we did. Brisket and Pork Ribs are very tender. Actually, better than the bbq we had in Memphis, TN. Don't forget to try the Potato Salad and Baked Beans. The meats are cooked at low temps., and slowly. Very good food.....Will continue to visit often!!1

Stopped in for dinner on a Saturday night. It was the first time we had visited the new location. We were greeted by the smell of hickory and the sounds of country music. We went up to counter to place our order. Figured I would go with what I knew, a platter of beef brisket, but they were out. We settled for the pork ribs. There was plenty of meat on the ribs and they were very tender. Had their sweet sauce on ribs. My sides were BBQ beans and a potato salad that was distinctly different. My wife had the beans and the Cole slaw. A very basic dinner roll came with the meal. Soft drinks are self serve. The restaurant was clean and sparsely decorated. Business was mostly take out. Some people were sitting and eating. Good food for a fair price, but the service is hit or miss. The restaurant is closed on Sunday and Monday. And they close early (8 pm) rest of the week.

Occasionally stop at Hillbilly for lunch. They recently lost their lease to their old space and moved to a larger new location. The new location feels a little less personal but it is also right next to a shooting range and a biker bar so if you want to have a super American afternoon guns, bbq, beer - this is as good a place as any. The service is erratic at best but the food is pretty good. The pork is where its at for me. Whether platter or sandwich it is your best bet. I am not a big fan of the brisket and the chicken. The spicy sauce is good but the regular one is a little too sweet for me. Coleslaw is my favorite side - the rest are typical que sides.

Stopped in here with my baby daddy last weekend after lunchtime before dinner. We were both pleasantly surprised. The building feels new, bright and clean with plenty of seating. We seated ourselves and were waited on immediately. The staff was friendly and the food came quickly. I thought the food was pretty tasty, pork was tender and juicy with a nice crust on the ends. The beans were as good as any I've had around here. I really liked the potato salad, plenty of mayo and a nice cajun spice kick. The sweet bbq sauce is yum and always has a kick of spice. Not too hot just right. Not to mention the prices are really reasonable and the portions are nice sized. I will definitely hit this place up again.

Hubby and I went for dinner a couple of nights ago, arrived a little after 5:00. Cars in parking lot must have been for the bar next door. We were the only people in the place. Went on and ordered, I had brisket, baked potato and baked beans. Hubby had ribs, coleslaw and baked beans. None of the food was hot, baked potato was not done. I have never eaten in a barbecue place where the brisket was cut in cubes and not sliced! The flavors were good, would like up try one more time but hubby said he will never go back. Also, no one else came in the entire time we were there even to pick up go orders!

Went here today for lunch because I heard their smoked pork chops were to die for. They were out by the time I got there so I had the beef brisket platter with bbq beans and potato salad. Brisket was tender. Good stuff. The beans and potato salad were very good too. It's decent bbq if you're craving brisket or ribs and in the area. Menu is pretty limited. Only like 3-4 choices of meat and 6-8 sides. They do have daily lunch specials though.

I'm very disappointed with my visit to Hillbilly Bar B Q. Even with some of the warnings in Yelp reviews about slow service I wasn't prepared to wait over 20 minutes for someone to come take my order. I even went up to the counter thinking maybe that's what I was supposed to do but I was just told to have a seat and someone would take my order. What really makes this bad is that it wasn't a full dining room for lunch; I had gone early hoping to avoid the crowd. The staff consisted of two people: one guy in the big, open kitchen making all the plates by himself and one woman running the register and occasionally going to tables to take orders. I wound up ordering to brisket and pork combo platter with slaw and baked beans. The slaw was a red vinegar based slaw and tasted good. The beans were pretty good as well, but nothing special that I couldn't get out of a can at home with a bit of spices added. The pork was juicy. tender, and delicious. The brisket was dry and the bark kind of bland. Other reviews are right, Hillbilly passes out sauce in small containers as though it were a restricted substance. I barely had enough for my meat. Rounding out the platter was a bun that was slightly stale. Overall I won't be going back. The service was horrible and the food not good enough to overcome that.

This place is just "ok" BBQ and they are similar to but slightly below Corky's for a BBQ experience. They give you a very good portion of meat on their plate specials BUT they dole out their BBQ sauce, like it is liquid gold, and you only get a tiny little cup of it that isn't nearly enough to go with your meal. The brisket is very similar to that at Corky's but it isn't the moistest and is more on the dry side so it certainly needs some sauce. They also only give you ONE napkin and I'm always suspicious of any BBQ that doesn't take multiple napkins to eat. They do have some of the most FANTASTIC vinegar cole slaw I've ever had and I've rarely enjoyed eating such marvelous fresh and crunchy stuff as this with such amazing flavor. Besides the slaw I would probably not return here again as it is so similar to Corky's and the location is far out of my way.

Definitely on my list of top BBQ places. The staff is friendly and food comes out quick. Try the pulled pork and potato salad! The baked beans are phenomenal! The new location is very nice, clean and spacious.

Hillbilly is excellent barbeque - pulled, not sliced and very tender. Barbeque beans and potato salad are excellent. They moved to a new location that offers more seating, better parking and access to other venues such as "The Kamp" whose building it shares. However, I will miss the hole in the wall origins of the old location. Portions are large. Service is unhurried; so don't expect a fast food experience. Denver Mullican

Delicious BBQ chopped beef sandwiches. It's like a tornado lifted a BBQ joint out of central TX and plopped it down in NOLA. The employees and customers look like they came along for the ride. Good stuff.

I'm not giving this place 2 stars because of the food. I think the food is excellent, when you can get it. I used to order take out pretty frequently from there. I started to get very annoyed when every time I would call and place an order for me and my family, they were ALWAYS out of something. I'm an understanding person, but the last 3 times I called, they were out of pork, baked potatoes, AND beans. It's very frustrating to have a big order of food for many people to find out they're out of half the menu items for the day. If they can't cook enough food to stay open for dinner, they should close for dinner. And I agree with the reviews above regarding the sauce. They barely give you any. I'll be going to Corky's for my BBQ from now on.

Food is always great. Service is always slow. I know that and I still keep coming back but today I walked out. Customers were watching their food get cold and frustrations were high. The lady behind the counter had one speed, SLOW, and seemed to have a bad attitude. This will be my last trip.

I literally have never waited for food in my life as long as I waited there. After 45 minutes, i was told it was going to be at least another 15 minutes. During the 45 miutes I was there, only one table out of the 7 or so that were full received any food at all. I had to end up leaving before i even received my order due to a previous engagement. There were three young employees there that seemed to lack any sense of urgency or food preparation / serving experience. I had been there before and had enjoyed it, but next time i'll be sure and place my order a few days ahead of time so that i know it will be ready.

I really wanted to love Hillbilly BBQ, I don't want to say I didn't like it but, I'm not sure it was love at first bite either. I'd give it THREE & HALF STARS if I could. To do the fair review I felt like I bought the joint out. I ordered a combo (beef & pork with two sides) along with a couple of ribs and a couple more sides. First, the staff was very friendly and helpful. When torn between the traditional BBQ sauce & sweet sauce he put two pieces of beef on a slice of wax paper and handed me both bottles of sauce. Both were good (and I took both). On a side note, he did tell me they are moving to Hickory and I think there might be a temporary move between where they are now and Hickory...so if you are going to try this place CALL AND FIND OUT WHERE THEY ARE LOCATED! On to the food. The beef was good...maybe a little on the dry side. The pork I thought was better than the beef, the ribs (the dry type) were ok, not a ton of meat on the one I ate and it did have a good bit of fat on it. I thought the meat was very smokey. I like smokey but, I like to actually taste the meat too. If I had to rank the meats I tried I'd say the pork was best, followed by the beef and then the ribs. The sides I ordered were corn salad, potato salad, baked beans & slaw. The corn salad wasn't what I was expecting...I was thinking more along the lines of the corn stuff from Voodoo BBQ (which I love!) and this was a cold corn salad with tomatoes and a little kick...it was good. The potato salad really had some kick...it was good. The beans were ok. The slaw was not creamy like most places but, I think it was a vinegar based...good stuff. I think those were their four normal sides. One thing I have to stay about everything was it all had a lot of Cajuny (I'm making up words now) kick to it. Sometimes I think places can go a little too far with the Cajun seasoning...this might be the case here. I don't own any Tony Chachere's and it's really not something I want to taste when I'm going out. Just my personal taste here. Overall, I'd try it again. I wanted this to be my "go to" BBQ place and it isn't it. I know a lot of people don't like Voodoo BBQ but, I do it because it isn't overly smoked and always solid (I thought The Joint was a little too smokey too). I think Hillbilly BBQ was good and I'd try it again but it's not my #1 BBQ place. I'd give it THREE AND A HALF STARS if I could.

The best pulled pork in the Nola area. Make sure you bet the corn salad, it is great along with the baked beans. I've eaten here many times and when in the area always have to make a stop. They have the best sauce in town and wish they bottled it. Sweet yet spicy is a great combination.

  • Barry F.

The good is the portions were large. The boudin was very good; first time I had tried and I enjoyed it. The alligator sausage had a great taste and the beans were really good. The brisket was dry, pork fatty and slimy, rib full of fat. I am sure there are better BBQ joints to try.

Cheap and casual barbeque. Meat is good and very tender. I enjoyed the sides as well. They close pretty early, so be ready for that. I saw them do a take out order and that seemed like a pretty good bet. Best BBQ I've found in NOLA so far.

  • Robert H.

I'm not going to go out and say this is the best bbq in the metro area. I still think ms.hysters and podners are far better, but this place is pretty damn good. That smokey kentucky style is something that puts this place pretty high on my list of Louisiana bbq joints. Too bad we don't have much of an original style of bbq here, or at least a popular one.

    (4)
  • Ryan W.

As far as the meat goes, this is the best BBQ in the metro area. The sides are a little weak, but when you get such an absolutely scrumptious brisket sandwich, you don't care.

  • Michelle P.

I used to be a big fan of the brisket but the last several times I have gone they were either completely out of brisket or the pieces they gave me were little more than fat and gristle. The hobo taters are tasty, the coleslaw is good, but the stupid roll they give you is a throwaway. As for service, they always seem overwhelmed and annoyed that you are there, so don't expect any warm fuzzies from this crowd. When the brisket is good it is really good, you just have to get there at the beginning of the week. They also will give you bones for your dogs for free if you ask. The bbq sauces are really good, especially the sweet one.

  • Kathleen R.

Really enjoyed the food here. We had ribs, great flavor with lots of meat, the pork, very moist, tender, and good portions. Both BBQ sauces were good, but I liked the original better. Sides were solid. We had the BBQ beans, delicious, potato salad had crab boil flavor but it wasn't so strong that it overwhelmed. Cole slaw was nice and light with a vinegar base dressing. Baked potatoes were also good. I will come back, but be sure to check the location as the sign said that they were moving to Hickory Ave. Service was polite, friendly. Decor was blue collar comfortable.
