There are great burgers at BBQ joints. I know this. In fact, I dont have a clue if the BBQ is good or not because I came for the burger and it didn't disappoint. Cooked fresh to order this 1/3# patty is really well cooked on the flat-top like I like it. Add fries that were piping hot and some iced tea and you are out the door for around $9 That's right. $9......I can't believe people eat at McDonalds. I may try the BBQ one day but for now, this place is my burger stop on the Baton Rouge to Jackson drive. Try it. It's good.

It's a Hammond thing and I don't get it. I find it greasy and bad tasting. I have friends who would crawl over hot coals and crushed glass to have some. Short on funds? You can get a sauce bun with no meat. Ewww.

My hubby and his family LOVE this place. I think it's because it's one of those nostalgic things from your childhood. He took me here when we went to visit family and was SOOOO excited and told me how AWESOME these sammies are. Eh. The BBQ sauce isn't like Texas BBQ sauce, not as spicy/flavorful. I got a beef and a pork sandwich; I preferred the beef. The meat was tender. I ordered it "heavy" (lots of sauce!) with cheese, and I forgot the other term but it meant lettuce, tomato, and mayo. I thought cheese, lettuce, tom, and mayo was kinda weird on a BBQ sammy... I also added pickles and was told I must be from Texas. (well, what's wrong with that? nuttin better than japs or pickles with bbq!). As for the atmosphere, it's just an old fast food joint, nothing special. The sandwiches were good, but nothing to write home about. The toppings ended up not being weird, but if I went again I would forgo the cheese. I can't say I understand the hype from the fam, but maybe it IS because I'm from Texas!

BBQ Beef and Pork Sandwiches, not your everyday BBQ sauce though, but trust me try it at least once. It has been here in Hammond as long as I can remember, and there is no other place around like it.

Not sure why Hi Ho causes such high blood pressure in folks. It's likely because when one thinks barbecue, you're thinking ketchupy-sweet, tangy flavors on slow-smoked meat. That's not what Hi-Ho is all about. Hi-Ho is pork or beef sandwiches, saturated in a thin sauce. Think of V-8 juice with a touch of vinegar thrown in. Hint of smoke. It's great stuff, but if your radar is set for traditional barbecue, you'll be disappointed. The buns are toasted on the grill. The meat is warmed, placed on the crispy bun, and the sauce is mixed in right there on the hot grill. (Very few places still do this!) In fact, your sandwich will usually have a darkened ring on its top--collateral damage from the grill surface. Don't sweat it, it just adds to the experience! Ask for a "pork heavy" or "beef heavy." Extra sauce, enough that you'll have to peel the soft, soft bun off the wrapping paper. One of the best moments for me is when you get your order. It comes wrapped in paper, and the spillover sauce actually serves to hold the paper together. If the package is put together properly--and they've been doing this for decades--peeling off the paper will just take the top layer of skin off your sandwich. For me this is heaven!! Perfection in paper with toothpicks. Go to Hi-Ho expecting a good, wet sandwich. Add some barbecue chips and a Barq's root beer. Let life be good again..

Stopped by recently out of nostalgia -- used to eat these little BBQ sammiches all the time when I was at SLU. Still the same, sloppy and tasty in a low brow way. It is not good food, but just satisfying. Not sure how else to describe it.

As a BBQ enthusiast I enjoy going to hole in the wall places whenever I can find them. The staff was very nice and after looking at the menu prices I felt as if I hit the jackpot. We placed our order and patiently waited a short while. I opened up my soggy pork sandwich and could instantly sense why it was so cheap. The taste was terrible and the BBQ sauce was the worst I've had in a long time. I tried forcing it down and eventually succeeded. I'm not one to hate a place after trying it once. So I went back, and same results. I'm not sure how this place is still able to stay in business.

Fuck Hi-Ho, so fucking much. This place does not even deserve one star. I have been once with a friend and neither of us will never go back. Their prices are very reasonable, but when you get your food you find out why. I think we both got pulled pork sandwiches. I'm a chef and have cooked many a cochon de lait, so I know what perfectly cooked pulled pork is. That is not what you get at Hi-Ho. The meat was nauseating with a sulfurous taste that you usually find in aging pork, and a texture like it had passed through a liquid crisco fountain. Desperate to offset the sickening taste, we bought one of the 25 cent cups of their homemade bbq sauce. WRONG! It was dyed vinegar, as near as I could tell. So now not only was I eating rotten sulfur fat-pork, I was eating rotten sulfur fat-pork with douche on top. We threw out our sandwiches and left, wiser but poorer. If you value your life, never eat here.

This is the best hamburger joint around. This place is fast and friendly. It's been here for a very long time. What a great treasure they have here in Hammond. Simple, simply. We've only had the double cheeseburger and a Barq's ROOT BEER. Yummy, yummy. Something so simple can be so hard to find.

Pork was HORRIBLE. Please learn to properly smoke, flavor and actually PULL the pork and not slice it! BBQ sauce needs work, has a bad Mr. Clean aftertaste. The staff were great and very friendly.

Loved it in college. I was in town for business and stopped in for lunch. One beef, one pork heavy (extra sauce) and a coors light. Added hot sauce and had a great lunch.

I moved away from the area in 1971, but visit frequently ... Hi-Ho is a must stop ... I ate it as a child with my grandfather; I ate it at lunch break in high school; it was an eat before frat parties in college ... years ago when I lived in Chicago and drove down I would stop at the one in Amite as it was on the way in ... now I stop in Hammond as it is on the way out ... I've been eating Hi-Ho since the 50's and they haven't changed ... some people say pull the pork instead of slicing it; well, that's the way most people do it but Hi-Ho does it their own way and that's what makes it stand out from the crowd ... many places have tried to copy the recipe but Hi-Ho cannot be imitated ... beef or pork, plain or dressed, it's messy but an eating experience extraordinaire - splash on the Crystal and let the juice run down to your elbows ... I compare it to Italian beef in Chicago or cheese steak in Philly - it's local fare unique to the area ... get it while you're there because when you leave your taste buds will be found wanting until you get back ... three, dressed, two pork, extra sauce !!
