The Robert Family's "The Cabin Restaurant" is a long-time favorite of ours. Just 2 or 4 minutes off IH-10, @ Burnside, LA, one hour West of NOLA. Try the JUMBO fried or stuffed shrimp. Near several pretty plantation homesites. Plenty parking in partly shaded lot. Historic buildings assembled from ancient slave quarters & parts of an 18th Century sugar mill. Don't you dare miss this JEWEL of a REAL Cajun eatery ! Rick

We chose this restaurant as a last minute choice and we are so happy we did! All of the food was absolutely outstanding. The Fried Stuffed Crab was very tasty and the dirty rice was excellent. Another member of our party had the Andouille Gumbo which was very flavorful. The best part of the meal however was the amazing Buttermilk Pie and Beeb's Homemade Bread Pudding! Each were very unique and had amazing flavor. The custard topping on the Bread Pudding was an excellent addition and balances out the sweetness of the rum sauce. The Buttermilk Pie was so yummy we even purchased the recipe! The service was also excellent. Our server Harley provided excellent recommendations and was charming, quick, efficient and informative. Her genuine demeanor added to the experience. The historical aspects of the restaurant add to the authentic South Louisiana ambience. Will definitely be back again! Recommend to anyone passing through!

Discovered this place by chance and a wonderful discovery it turned out to be !! Great great food !

We stopped here following a tour of the Houmas House. We showed up before the dinner rush, so we were the only ones in the restaurant for the majority of our dinner. We started with tossed salad and gumbo. The salad looked as though it had been kept in the cold part of the refridgerator (the lettuce was transparent) and the gumbo was very watery. My sister-in-law and I both had the sea food platter. We both thought that it would be steamed or boiled. It was not, nor was it specified on the menu. Instead, we paid $32 each for a plate of fried 'seafood' that tasted as though it was previously frozen. Very disappointing. The waitress confirmed for us that it did not say that the platter was fried. Also, the executive chef came out to ask how the food was. He didn't seem very upset about our dislike of the food. The others in our party had a po' boy, hamburger steak and pan fried chicken. They said that it was ok. This one star review is primarily being driven by the seafood platter. The service was adequate, but there was an external security alarm that beeped incessantly during our meal.

Consistently good. It can get crowed at times but they normally handle the crowds well. Never a bad experience.

Great place to stop if you are on I-10. We stopped on the way back to Houston from New Orleans. Overall we had a pretty good experience, the place has a great ambiance, we loved the cabin and the service was top notch after we told them we were in a hurry. We had the sampler which included fried alligator, fried crawfish and others (the crawfish was superb). I followed with a sausage po boy, which was pretty good, although I feel they could've done a little more. My partner had the shrimp etouffer and had good thing to say about it. I would recommend this place if you are passing in the area.

Get your Cajun fix with a little bit of South Louisiana history. The buildings were once used a slave quarters and there are quite a few interesting décor items you will not see in other restaurants and are worth the drive to experience. I am told they have the best fried catfish, however I am not a fan of fried foods so I usually order the Cajun omelet, grilled shrimp or oysters or the red beans and rice. The menu selection is not overwhelming but there is a good selection of the typical seafood basics. I have to say I enjoy the ambience more than the food. Closed on Mondays after 3pm

This is a local favorite for good Cajun and Creole cooking. I am not sure about the history of the place, but it is steeped in history and tradition. The food is the best you are going to get around with its no thrill dishes. Just look at some of the pictures if you don't trust me. tips: Can't go wrong with red beans and rice with cornbread. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

My daughter and her husband had their wedding dinner here of about 40 people. The staff did an amazing job and The food came out quick, was the right temperature and tasted wonderful!! Many thanks to The Cabin and all of the staff who worked the wedding 12/27/14!
(5)Jesse U.
Very unique place, great food and unique atmosphere. Eating while observing the history of the actual building ( old plantation) was quite pleasant and the roast beef po'boy was melt in your mouth perfect. In my time in New Orleans I attempted to recreate the experience of this treat, and was unable. If you are anywhere near Sorrento, I highly recommend the short venture to the Cabin for some delicious fare.

The corn bread was wonderful, but the red beans were amazing service was good will be back soon

Stopped by The Cabin on the way to an LSU game. If you're hungry and can't wait until Baton Rouge, there aren't too many choices, but this is a good one. Shrimp po-boy: authentic, wonderful. Red beans & rice: authentic, wonderful. We also had some fried gator bites for the hell of it, which were chewy and slightly expensive, but gator's pretty much always chewy and slightly expensive, so I'm not faulting The Cabin for that. The place really beats you over the head with its ambiance: drinks are served in mason jars, the building itself is riddled with farming equipment & generally old things, and the restrooms appear to be made out of gigantic old barrels. It's really straddling the line between 'enthusiastically historic' and just plain touristy. Nothing touristy about their po-boys, though, so if the decor bugs you, just eat up and don't worry about the plows hanging from the ceiling.

Good comfort food. Great option if you're leaving NOLA and about to get on I-10 going back to TX. It's not far off the highway and a straight shot.

I gave it 1 star . If you are there for lunch or dinner the foods O.K. Not worth making a detour for but it's o.k. Just be sure to watch your step. NEVER book a Large ( over 30 people) event here. They just do not do well with large groups.I say this because I've been there with a small ( under 30) group and a large group. I went to an Outdoor Wedding & Reception for 100 people there. It was horrible. I've had leftover fast food reheated fried chicken that was better. Yes, it is an old building but It's also a "slip & fall "lawyer's dream come true. There are no consistently level even surfaces once you leave the sidewalk. The Cabin had the wedding reception buffet food ( Bride had ordered mostly fried food) set up and placed in chafing dishes 3 hours before the pre-arranged reception time. The food was a Greasy, Soggy, lukewarm , mess. Most of the guest took 1 bite and tossed their plate in the trash. The Cabin Restaurant placed wooden chairs in the brick courtyard for the Evening Wedding. They tried to get the Bride to move indoors to a Silo (dark, exposed beam ceiling UGLY round) type building because the Event Manager said that she could see rain heading towards The Cabin on the radar. The Bride declined because she wanted an outdoor wedding. Then the Cabin refused to pick up the wooden chairs before they were rained on and replace them after the shower went through. They would have had to be moved if the Bride had agreed to the change to the round building. So why would they not tear down & set up the chairs after the shower? The Cabin Staffer said," we'll dry them with paper towels." One of the guest replied, " Wooden chairs retain water". To which Staff replied, " we'll be sure to get YOU a dry one" and then she walked away! They " ran out" of paper towels. The Chairs were soaked. Many of the Guest stood for the wedding. This is from Their website, "... The Cabin Restaurant cater your special event. The Cabin Restaurant is able to accomodate events for groups of up to 400 attendees on our premesis." If they can't be professional enough to spell check their own website why would you want to eat or plan an event there?

Ate there on Saturday they were out of a few items, their fine dining restaurant in the back has closed, looks like they are having financial troubles. The cornbread was hard like a rock,Wife had the stuffed crab and potato salad when we arrived home she became ill.I had the red beans and rice and it was good. The waitstaff looked like they were miserable. I think at one time it may have been great but not anymore!!
(1)Richard P.
Good cajun/creole. No complaints. Get the jambalaya. As locals, this is one of our go-to places. It's always good.
(4)Mg B.
Any time I visit NOLA I make sure to get outside of the city and stop by The Cabin for a meal. Such an interesting atmosphere, good food.
(5)Cynthia M.
Excellent gumbo, catfish, etouffee, shrimp, fries, buttermilk pie....everything!! I will most definitely go again!
(5)Brad B.
The place was very cool. The food was good and service was fair. The cheese cake was some of the best.
(4)Keith B.
My wife and I took a day drive from New Orleans and wanted someplace where we could try some local food out of the French Quarter. So, based on the reviews we tried The Cabin for lunch and are glad we did - my wife wants to go back today! We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They have taken care in the buildings they use (right down to the bathrooms made from an old water tank ;). The service was exceptional and the food was great. We will be back.
(5)Marie L.
If you enjoy history and preservation then The Cabin is the place for you. Not only do they have FANTASTIC Cajun food, but the building and property itself is packed full of history. Every inch of the restaurant has a wonderful story and part of Louisiana history and culture! A return trip is in our future!
(5)Dylan H.
An interesting restaurant with great gumbo. If the service had been a bit more attentive, they would have a fifth star from me.
(4)Simon O.
Stopped here for breakfast on the way to Austin from New Orleans. The building is very cool and the history is worth the trip alone. The food was not very good and overpriced. Te serving staff were friendly and the food came out in a timely manner. It was a nice place to stop that is not a tourist trap and I was able to take a few decent photos in the parking lot. I would most likely look for somewhere new to try with some better cajun food if I pass through again.
(3)Leah T.
We love the Cabin! Good food, good service, great atmosphere! If you are near burnside or Gonzales it is a must!
(4)Russ B.
The Cabin has always been one of my Mother's favorite Louisiana restaurants, but she hadn't been here in a while and I read some bad reviews here - I tried to talk her out of it. I am glad I didn't - it was fantastic. Great menu - all of your Cajun and Creole dishes. I tried their sampler so I could sample several different dishes. I got more than I expected - more than a sample of each. I arrived hungry - I left stuffed. I will definitely return the next time I'm in this area. And don't worry if you're traveling with someone who doesn't like to try different things - they have many "basic" menu choices too (my wife had fried shrimp - she said it was very good).
(5)Marc G.
One of my favorite restaurants! Visited this place one day while exploring the Great River Road and its several plantations. The Cabin is definitely one of a kind! Created from old slave cabin, the restaurant has some pretty amazing Cajun cuisine and the atmosphere is fantastic. The Great Dining Hall, with its four massive beams supporting the ceiling, resembles a garconnier. The food is really incredible! I ordered the gumbo, catfish, and the best dessert that I've ever tasted: buttermilk pie. Afterwards, be sure to check out the thirty-foot cypress carved alligator, nicknamed "Rock," basking in the front garden. Out back, there is a reconstructed Cajun Village containing several buildings including a school, slave cabins, and a post office. *** Excellent place to have lunch and relax while traveling the Great River Road. Be sure to check out some of the nearby plantations like Oak Alley and San Francisco.
(5)Sundancer S.
After reading all the good reviews, we were a little disappointed. The atmosphere was nice and so was the wait staff, but the food was nothing to write home about. I had the cabin special. The gumbo was okay if you poured a lot of hot sauce on it and so were the black eyed peas. The jambalaya was not good. It was greasy and had weird bits of chicken with gristle on it. My friend had the red beans and rice which was not bad but not good either. The one positive food experience was the corn bread. It was a little out of the way from I-10, so I wouldn't bother returning.

Tonight my coworker and I were looking for some grub in Gonzalez. I had the shrimp poboy and he had the sausage poboy. The bread on the poboy was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and warm all around. The aroma was amazing. Shrimp were crispy as well. The meal came with seasoned fries that were crunchy. Both were awesome and extremely filling (we were not expecting so much food). What made it more awesome was our waitress, Jodie S. Make sure you ask her if you go, she made our time there awesome. Next business trip in the area, I'm definitely going here again.

Can't go wrong with Red Beans and Rice on a Monday in Louisiana. Hubby totally enjoyed it. I had the crawfish etoufee. It was delicious. Our waitress was very friendly, but the hostess was a little off. Maybe she was having a bad day. She wasn't rude, just not very friendly. The cabin has a lot of history housed within it's walls. It really is a great place to stop. It's a little off the beaten trail from I-10, but it's worth the trip.
