This is a great piece of Americana. Its just off the road between Baton Rouge and New Orleans and kind of hidden behind the Waffle House. When my band would travel through the south we made a point to stop at all the weird tourist traps and this place always stood out. The Coffee Shop has great traditional southern food. Beignets, Gumbo, Red Beans and Rice a fat sausage. Good coffee, cold iced tea. If you are nice to the woman up front she will take you round back and call up the "Big Boy" out of the pond. No, not a dog, big boy is a huge ass alligator that comes when called. If you are really lucky you can watch them thrown in chickens at feeding time. hrm. Around back there are a bunch of cottages, raised off the ground. I think you can stay in them. The old barn has antique tractors etc. A little pottery shop sells random tchotchkas. The weirdest things is there there are three bathrooms outside the Coffee Shop. One marked Men, one marked Women, and the third has the sign removed. you have to wonder, it is the south after all. This place is worth a stop. I revisited them on a trip to a wedding in Baton Rouge and had a great nostalgic time.

I have not had such an unfriendly experience in Cajun country! Stopped by to check out the Louisiana wine and had a grumpy women pour wine and answer all my questions in one word responses. I liked the wine but refused to buy from such an unfriendly person. Next we went to the antique shop. The clerk checks us out was civil but that's it. Finally I needed something to drink before we left. Stood at the counter at the coffee house and the checker did not look up but pushed a menu at me. No hello. No friendly talk. No thank you. I might expect this if it was closing time but this was 2 pm on a Sunday. If you want friendly Cajun hospitality you might be better off stopping at Waffle House down the street or just keep going to anywhere else in southern Louisiana.

We had a very nice time. Nice lunch and beignets and the shops were full of interesting stuff. My favorite parts were the pottery shop and the LSU and Saints gifts areas. We also lucked up by showing up for the fall fest celebration and the weather was awesome that day. Nice place, will be back.

Wonderful little shopping community for local items...very nice very friendly. Be sure to check out the bed and breakfast cottages located to the rear of the "village".

Go to the coffee shop. Beignet fingers are where its at. Pretty damn close to Cafe du Monde in NOLA. They have 2 live gators in back as well. Sit outside on their side porch on a pretty day... you can smell the jasmine.
