The oysters were good, but the rest of the meal was so spicy, you could not taste the food itself. Just because it is cajun, does not mean it has to be on fire! I've had better!

Fried shrimp and gumbo were very good!

We stopped in new years eve. Service was outstanding. The waiter (sorry forgot his name) was one of the best we've ever seen anywhere. He was a 5star plus. Food was pretty good. Not the best seafood but ok. Jacked up oysters were good. Fried shrimp just ok. See ya next time we're in town.

This is the very first place we decided to try when we arrived in Louisiana and I'm glad we did! The food and customer service was really good. We ordered the voodoo shrimp appetizer and that was very good. The catfish was cooked perfectly and the red beans and rice taste homemade. Not to mention the gumbo......amazing! Very good food and definitely worth the price!

Ooooh my waiter... well let's just say he made the dining experience allll the better. Now on to the food: Ordering the stuffed crab claws as an appetizer, Zydeco shrimp as the entree & the non-sweet raspberry tea, c'est bon!!!! The temperature of the food was great and delivery was timely. The server also kept a steady supply of bread and butter on the table. Service was impeccable, to say the least. This Covington/Mandeville Area Don's Restaurant provides ample parking. Spacious indoor seating appears great for a party.

Catfish was extremely tasty and light. The hush puppies were seasoned perfectly. I wish that I had more. The red beans and nice were seasoned great. Neither needed any hot sauce. The bread pudding was enjoyed and the service was very attentive and friendly!

Ok, so I had this review sand bagged until now because of time constraints. What? I get to busy to type reviews all dong day. Don's has a very romantic feel to it, especially at night. The lighting is really dim and decor has a Hawaiian flair. There is an open view of the Oyster Broiler, where the shucker, shucks the oyster & broils them by adding ingredients from his bar. I thoroughly enjoyed the Jacked Up Flame Broiled Oysters. Our server, Britney, was very informative & accommodating. I highly recommend this place for romance or if you just plain out like Oysters.

I would love to say this was a good experience but unfortunately it was not. The manager Jacob was great very nice and helpful wanting to make the customer experience good. So I gave it two stats bc customer service is great, food is not. Had jacked up oysters again, small oysters with shell bits in them no jalapeños, little bacon over priced. Also had red beans- bland no flavor, jacked up shrimp- small small shrimp no jalapeños- not good. Family had other items, not good. Customer service is great, food is not- high prices. Acme or copelands are right down street, much better food.

The waitress was really great. She was real sweet and on the ball. The oysters were good on a half shell, the cocktail sauce not so good. Not that expensive. My boyfriend and I split the seafood platter and we had plenty of food left after we were full.

I was PLEASANTLY surprised at my 2nd and more recent visit to Don's. They must have gotten new Management or something. I think I went on a Monday, when every other restaurant on the Northshore likes to be closed. It was half off all Oysters and a great experience. The waitress was great and the food really exceeded my expectations. It is more than just a chain to me now. I ordered a seafood salad and was just wowed! It was exactly what I want to see when ordering a $12+ salad. It had lots of fresh seafood on it and tasted wonderful, like a damn seafood salad should taste! My boyfriend ordered the soft shell crab dinner and it looked really good as well. I tasted a piece and it was really seasoned well. Oh, and I can't forget the Chargrilled oysters! They were great too! (Although NOTHING or NO ONE beats Drago's charbroiled oysters). Also, they have a patio... Which I find hard to come by on the Northshore. So, check out Don's and I hope your experience is as good as mine was!

.@Donsseafood Although the reviews were middling, this location was next to my hotel and being lazy I decided to check it out. Happy I did. I sat at one of the high tables by the bar, and service from the bar staff was great. I had a gumbo and salad combo which was perfect in size and price. I didn't feel rushed and the many televisions gave me ample choice of where to trun my attention. Here is a quick tip: Check in on yelp and get a free Gumbo!

I would give a 3-1\2 stars. The servers were very good. We had a group of 14, I called ahead. They set aside a room set for 20. I told more people may show up, but 14 for sure. I received a free cup of chicken and andouille sausage, which was very good. I ordered the all you can eat shrimp. The shrimp was also very good. The server let us know the restaurant is going to make changes soon. I don't know if that means changes to the decor, or everything. Dinner for 3 came to $81 total with the tips. A little over priced, for what was presented. I would eat here again

Stayed next door so it was convenient. Read reviews but menus seemed a little too much fried food but figured one late night to give it a try. The spicy shrimp was really good and fried alligator was good. Got a few beers since all drinks are 2 for 1. Overall not a bad place it turned out really good and the don spice is even better than Tony Chachere

I take my son here because it's a quick, no reservation place to sit down and eat seafood. People tell me they don't like the chef, but everything I have had there has been really good. Some evenings they have $2.99 all you can eat crawfish and that's my sons favorite. If I can get a bargain like that to feed my teenage boy, I'm all in! Good food, reasonable price, great location and friendly staff make this middle-of-the-road restaurant worth checking out!

I've been here three times over the past five years, and can safely give Don's a good solid three stars. The food is never terrible, but it's not outstanding, either. The service is usually adequate, though not impressive. The food quality is so-so. I've never felt compelled to write a review because it's always just so mediocre, and I usually write Yelp reviews to call out really good or really bad restaurants. My wife and I ate there for dinner, and spent about $55, par for the course. The salad veggies could've been fresher, the shrimp could've been bigger, the cocktails could've tasted less pre-made. The catfish could've been better with half the salt, the étouffée reminded me of the general purpose brown sauce at a cheap Chinese restaurant. But it was all edible, the waitress didn't screw up any part of our order, and the table was clean. I don't know why there is a line to get a table on a week night. There are way better restaurants in Covington. But there is a certain clientele that just loves this place.

Good food, there are better options in Louisiana but definitely decent especially if you are staying in the hotel nearby.

I ordered the catfish dinner substituted the fries for shrimp etofue the shrimp etofue was good the catfish was maybe a half of a whole catfish and they cut it into small pieces it was OK. The free cup of gumbo should always be free it was terrible.. they give u garlic bread to start off with.... now let's get to the server she was absolutely the worse... she did not refill drinks in a timely manner after she asked us if we wanted refills she said it kept slipping her mind. Someone brought our food out and was walking around lost because she said she didn't know her table numbers because they change everyday! (Sad face) so we get our food finally.. but we didn't have silverware.. we were so ready to go we asked for the check immediately after we finish eating.

Been here several times and haven't been disappointed yet service is always great and the food is terrific! We enjoy there hamburger stake with cheese inside it's even better than it sounds mashed potatoes are average. The jacked up oysters and shrimp are killer and the hush puppies are on point we get a half order every time we come as well as a cup of there seafood gumbo. Prices are reasonable but you do pay a premium for certain items out of season. Needless to say if your near a location check them out for there large portions of great food.

This place was so great from the SERVICE to the FOOD the I had to create a yelp account just to leave a review for future for customers. Ate there on a Friday afternoon after checking in at the Courtyard next door to it. We had Megan as our waitress and she pretty much made us fall in love with the place. I do a lot of traveling and I have to say of all the places I've been hands down Megan provided me with the best restaurant experience I've ever had. The next day I tried another seafood place down the street and was so disappointed that after we had already ate we went straight back to Don's. The owner Jacob and manager along with the hostess, the twins, and Alexis provided with the same awesome experience from the day before and great food. Oh by the way I ate the seafood combo, zydeco shrimp, and seafood gumbo and they were all GREAT! Thank you Megan, Alexis, Jacob, Twins and the rest of the staff!

Everything here is spicy. If you like spicy food, this is the place for you. The crab stuffed shrimp is very good as is the redfish. The hush puppies have a kick to them also. But it is very loud and can be crowded especially on game days.

This location is a lot closer to our home than the one in Hammond. My wife and I were in the area, so we decided to try it out. We were seated promptly and the waitress was very attentive. We started our meal with hush puppies. OOOOMmmmmm. Hush puppies. MADE OF CRACK. My wife ordered the shrimp etoufee, while I had the chicken salad. Yes, I ordered a salad at a seafood restaurant. I wasn't in the mood for seafood, my wife was. A short time later, we received our meals. My wife loved her dish and the chicken salad was liberally covered with spiced grilled chicken. I ate all but one little bite, I was so full. If you're in the area, I highly recommend you try them out.

Let's begin with the garlic bread, that was an outstanding addition to the free cup of gumbo. Next, Meagan, Alexis, Jacob(the owner) and the B&B Twins, you guys are amazing and can't say enough about you or the service provided to us. Here is how good this place is, we ate there on Friday night for dinner and had an amazing time with Meagan to say the least. On Saturday, we decided to try another local spot that shall not be named. That place was so bad, we had to take a coworker to Don's just to show her how good the food there was compared to the other spot. Needless to say, Meagan wasn't there Saturday but we had Alexis and she was fantastic as well. The coworker was so upset that she was full from the other place and could not enjoy the good food and desert from Don's. Just so we are clear here, the only place you need to eat at if you go to Covington is Don's for seafood!!!!! The attention to detail and service is above any other restaurant I have ever been to and I am hoping I can get back down to New Orleans just to go visit Don's again. Thanks again to all mentioned in this review.

I had the fried shrimp and catfish platter. The catfish was thin cut which i love. The shrimp seemed to be fresh and tasty. Had the red beans rice for side very good. The prices are a bit high for a non tourist place in Covington La. We had a half dozen char grilled oysters good but $12.99 is crazy.

This was our first trip and we will definitely be back. The service was fantastic. The gumbo was outstanding. My wife had the grilled marinated chicken breast and said it was great. The owner came and talked with us to make sure we were enjoying everything.

Staying at the Courtyard next to this restaurant and have stopped in three times now in the last couple of days. The seafood gumbo is excellent and blackened red-fish even better. Service was great (Heather the first time, Brandy tonight) and these ladies really hustle. Could not ask for more from the staff, everything was very good!

I guess we were here on a bad day. We are traveling through going back through to Texas. I was wanting a shrimp poboy like I've had before traveling through La. It's Sunday so a lot of places are closed. This place had decent reviews and is close to the interstate so it looked like a good choice. Yeah, not so much. Even though we were the only customers at first, it took longer than i would have thought to get our food. First of all, let me say that we are not picky eaters. My husband ordered the "jacked up shrimp". Jacked up is an understatement. If you want little masses of greasy globules of butter cheese and shrimp, this is your dish. It was so unappetizing looking and tasting, my husband ate two bites and just couldn't finish it because he was afraid it would make him sick it was so greasy. I ordered the half shrimp poor boy and chicken andouille gumbo. Listen, I worked in Louisiana for two and half years. I've had some shrimp po boys, I know what they're supposed to look like. This was a half a loaf of french bread with approximately 10 small, clearly previously frozen breaded shrimp... This is Louisianna for gosh sake. At least have enough state pride to serve a legit poboy. The gumbo was the best thing about the meal and even it was flavorless... Clearly without a roux base. The manager was very nice when she realized our dissatisfaction but i'm pretty sure this probably wasn't a unique situation. Next time we are going through we won't be stopping here

  • Rob B.

Seafood gumbo loaded with crab and a solid taste of the sea with a rich dark roux. Huge portion of 1/2 fried crawfish 1/2 crawfish étouffée. Great staff at the bar, very friendly and attentive. If you're in the market for oysters this is your place. They burn through them pretty fast at the oyster grill behind the bar.

Didn't plan on visiting this restaurant but glad I did. Had to wait for 10 or so minutes so sat at the bar where the barman told us about the beers they had on tap. I enjoyed my meal although I think maybe the A/C was set a little low, did think about sitting out on the patio but was glad I didn't as all that seperates the diner from the smokers (standing) is a plastic curtain. I would go to this restaurant again.

Extremely underwhelmed. I had the seafood platter to go. I have paid have the price for much higher quality food. The stuffed crab was mostly bread with a bit of crab it it. I asked the hostess if the stuffed shrimp was the unbreaded version like on the grill menu. She said yes... I got fried stuffed shrimp which was dissapointing. They butterfly the fried shrimp in the typical fashion of places trying to make the shrimp appear larger than they are. Oysters were small and catfish was thin but the taste was okay overall. The etoufee was not probably the best thing on the plate. I also had the boudin balls which were okay but again I have had better. I asked for a side salad and was charged for it but it was not in the bag. Had to go back to the restaurant for the salad. Only went here as I was traveling on business. Will try to find a mom and pop place next time.

Born in Louisiana and was happy to be back in this part of Cajun Country, I wanted real cajun food and I needed gas. I asked a local guy where to try and he highly recommended Don's. I know this is a chain and I usually am not drawn to these types of business, but when ya do something right, it's just only smart to go again. And I was not disappointed. Parking was easy and it was not busy at all inside. I was politely greeted at the door and took a spot at the bar. The server was very polite and I knew what I wanted. GUMBO AND SEAFOOD. I started off with a small bowl of seafood gumbo and I was impressed, although a bit overboard on the fishy side of flavors, it had great flavor. Small bowl of perfectly boiled white rice was served on the side by a polite server. She all the while was busy grilling oysters. BLEEEEEHHHHH. Right at the bar. Me, not a fan.. Then the food food came, tender crispy lightly breaded and perfectly seasoned catfish fillets with fried shrimp. PERFECT. I was a very happy camper. I did not eat much of the fries, just seemed that the product was not fresh and a bit to weak for me. Overall I enjoyed the food. Could not finish it but all the same very good. The staff was in the expected southern charm as they chatted up with a guest and his 3 little girls. Even monitored 2 of them while Dad took one to the restroom. Try that in NEW YORK.... If you are in the area, give it a go.

Great spot for lunch. They offered us a couple of their new special loaded oysters with our order of a half dozen charbroiled. They were delicious, with cheese, bacon and some jalapeno heat. Friendly service. Overall, good spot.

Service was top notch. Brett was our waiter and he was very professional. We used a check in offer and got a cup of Gumbo which was awesome. The appetizer and the Gumbo was spot on. The fried catfish and fries was the entree. It was good. Needed a little more seasoning but they had some on the table to add to taste which worked out perfect. The filets were very thin and were perfect. The French fries left something to be desired. Thin fries that had a strange taste to them that I didn't enjoy at all. Almost like a smell to them. I would avoid the fries. I will be visiting them again to try another entree. I recommend the visit. I had three crown and diets, art and spinach dip, cup of gumbo, and two fried catfish and fries entrees. Was $67 plus tip.

We had a good experience here last night. Yes, it is expensive, but seafood is expensive these days. We did get a ton of food though! It wasn't the best but it was better than most and I would go back. There is another restaurant that we do like better, but they have gotten way out of line with prices. But this review is about Don's. I loved the garlic bread served at the start- you get hush puppies with your meal. We weren't in the mood for an appetizer but the waiter offered us a sample of the grilled oyster and the "jacked up" oyster. My husband took him up on it and said the grilled oyster was good. Jacked up means cheese and bacon on top. He wasn't crazy about the cheese but he said the oyster itself was a really really good one. We got a cup of gumbo to share. Again, not the best I've ever had, but for restaurant gumbo it was very good- thick dark roux and tons and tons of crabmeat!!!! Really, the only better is made at home. The children's shrimp plate was a great deal- had tons of popcorn shrimp. The little girl couldn't eat all of them and she is a shrimp monster. Greg's fried oyster plate was plentiful, crispy and he seemed happy. I got the Thursday night special which is $14.99 all you can eat fried shrimp and catfish. I figured they could eat the catfish, which they like and I don't and he could have some of my shrimp and I could always get more. The shrimp were butterflied and fried crispy. The catfish was thin and crispy. My one piece was fine, but he said his was too thin and so just tough. The hushpuppies were my only complaint- mushy inside. But I don't care about hushpuppies so whatever. Believe it or not, Greg said yes when the waiter offered him a complimentary bread pudding (it was his birthday.) He brought out a huge piece- could have fed 6 people! When I remarked the waiter said he took the biggest piece because he knew we were sharing. Ok, so he got a nice tip. Our waiter was attentive and friendly but not too much and I wish I had gotten his name. Back to the bread pudding. Again, very good, maybe not the best, but so much better than other soggy crap I've been offered. There was no fruit in it, which is good! It was creamy on the inside and crispy on the edges. The decor is nice, it's dark with booths and tables and a big bar. Old photos on the walls. I've heard about their Old Fashions, so I would go again for drinks definitely.

Hope they make it for I will not go back. Dinner for 2 almost $50. Seafood plater ($23 each) not much on it oysters and shrimp just okay - fish not cooked enough. Bread put on table first was use to hushpuppies from a seafood restaurant.

Better than Long John Silvers, but more expensive. Had seafood platter at lunch $14.00 bucks. Nothing special. Dipped in buttermilk? And then ran through cornmeal. Meh...French fries were good, but could have used a little more crispness. Companion has the seafood salad. Shrimp were supposed to be boiled, they were cocktail shrimp not a lot of seasoning. Crawfish were out of a bag, again not a lot of seasoning. Crab was okay. Italian dressing was meh meh meh! Amy, the server was good and along with the fries accounts for the two stars. I will not return.

I will have to re-review when I have more entrees, but this is a really nice place for Happy Hour. Good local beers on draft with great prices. Where are you at 5pm?

Well if you want sorta like seafood then order the seafood platter... It's pretty horrible. $35 for my whole meal... Not worth it... sorry Don... You kinda suck

Nice atmosphere and a great menu if you want something fried. I had gumbo and red beans. I enjoyed the red beans, which was well seasoned with taste sausage. The gumbo however was just a plain gravy with seafood. I recommend the red beans and Abita beer.

Food is decent but not great by any means. Everything here is overpriced as well. Service is why they are getting 3 stars as that is their saving grace here.

If you're looking for decent fried seafood, this place is as good as any I suppose. We tried it on a Thursday evening...unknowingly, it was "all you can eat fried catfish and fried shrimp". We didn't get the "all you can eat" special, instead we ordered 2 appetizers, 2 kids' meals, 2 entrees (1 which was a seafood salad), 1 dessert and 1 beer...$102, before tip. Pretty steep for mediocre food. The kids' catfish was good, the fries were disappointing, typical frozen fries. The garlic bread was good (you can put butter and garlic on practically anything and it will turn out good, am I right?), but they definitely try and push it on you in case you're there for the all you can eat seafood. They seemed disappointed that we only wanted 1 plate of garlic bread...nonetheless, the service was good. All in all, nothing special, menu is very heavy on carbs, even my fish of the day (I opted for broiled speckled trout instead of fried) only came with mashed potatoes, would have preferred some roasted veggies, perhaps. The menu variety was very typical for a seafood place, unfortunately, nothing there to draw us back.

Good fast to go! I have two small kids so eating at home is just easier sometimes. We ordered to go and we were pleased. I ordered the zydeco shrimp as my entree and it was delicious! My guys all ordered fried seafood plates of different varieties and everyone was satisfied. We will probably order to go from them again in the future.

Really good food . The Jacked Up Shrimp was good but a little oily. Gumbo good but a little spicey for our ladies. Service was excellent.

I spoke to a manager here today about our experience. Again, we didn't have a necessarily bad experience, but some of the food didn't seem to be up to par with the value. Like I mentioned: the gumbo, the shrimp étouffée, and the fried catfish. The manager was very nice as is to be expected. He was receptive to what we had to say and I, being VERY familiar with the world of customer service, felt he was genuine in his concern. This is the livelihood of his business and that of his staff we're talking about. I inferred that these particular issues would be resolved soon in the restaurant. I'm not in Covington very often so I can't test this out for myself, but I'm sure residents and guests can attests to this in the coming weeks. After reevaluating all the food, the staff, and the customer service, I'll give them a four. I wasn't paid to do so but felt compelled to do it after reevaluating our experience. In summary, this isn't the best seafood I've ever had. It's definitely not the worst, though. There's room for improvements, sure, but if the gentleman I spoke to is sincere in his work, he and his staff are working hard to get it all straight. Seafood (and restaurants in general) are difficult businesses and I hope they make good on their efforts.

Good service, but they should change the name to Butter's not Don's. Everything was covered in butter! So gross!! Gross oysters, overly salted $29 ribeye, over cooked shrimp. Too expensive for shitty food!!!

Food was downright mediocre. Jalapeño does not go with traditional Louisiana dishes the way they were doing it and it was overly greasy to boot.

Another fabulous meal at Dons. Last night me and my daughter shared an order of the Jacked Up Grilled Oysters on a half shell...the best ever! They had the best grilled flavor and just the right amount of seasoning to not over power the flavor of the oysters. My daughter had the crawfish étouffée, which she should have asked for the rice on the side (she can't eat a lot of rice) because it was a scoop of it right in the middle of the bowl which she had to scoop out. I had the grilled stuffed shrimp which was perfect & is also my favorite dish at Dons. They also allowed us to use our Yelp check-in coupon for a free cup of seafood gumbo. The waitress was pretty busy which is why I think we weren't offered drink refills. Other than that we had another wonderful dinner at Dons:)
