The BEST in town!! I usually order either the ham and swiss or the shrimp po-boy. Both are outstanding. I call ahead for take out and hope there is a parking spot in the front! The place is packed and the parking can be a little hairy at times. It is well worth it though. DO NOT bother with any other po-boy place in town!!!

When I visit this area, it's mandatory that I eat at Bear's. The roast beef poboys are simply THE BEST!! I can never eat an entire sandwich. It's so big. I've tried many poboys and Bear's is simply the best. It's worth $8. Do yourself a favor and GO!

I'm no Po Boy expert but if everyone else says this place is good, I'll go along with it. Make sure you call in your order because this isn't fast food. We ordered on the spot and waited almost 20 minutes to get our po boys. The roast beef is good and juicy. The shrimp one was pretty standard.

I'm in LA for about 10 days for work. Went around from NOLA to Monroe. After all is said an done the po boy here was the best one I've had and overall probably one of the best food items I had. I got the Fergie which is ham and roast beef with swiss. The meat was cut really thin and was super juicy. The bread maintained some nice crunch and was super solid. Final thoughts: Check this place out if your in the area and it would probably be worth it to go a bit out your way for it too.

Food is great as always but for reasons I dont have a clue on they changed their debit system and now charges you 1.39 unless you spend $20. The 1.39 isnt a problem but its the audacity of it because to me, its a racket of a processing company to get an extra 1.39. Wont visit here again just on the principle of schemeing your already loyal customers. SWITCH YOUR CARD PROCESSING COMPANY OR SOMETHING!

Moved to Covington a few months ago and needed a new place to get good po-boys. Luckily, Bears is just down the road from us!! Honestly, for months I'd seen the place, but wasn't sure what it was--thought it was a convenience store. After hearing they had great food, I still was put off by the service station-like appearance and how they seemed to never be open. Our painter overheard me lamenting the lack of po-boys and brought me a Bear's BBQ roast beef to try. I was astounded. It was absolutely THE BEST BBQ BEEF PO-BOY I'd ever eaten. The sauce is remarkably good. They put so much on that it gets all over your face and hands--and your shirt, too. I like it "plain," (no lettuce, tomato, pickle) but do add light mayo. The mayo changes the flavor, adds complexity, and takes down some of the heat. Their fries are well-seasoned and tasty, too. The saucer-sized cookies look homemade and are tasty. I like that I can get an Abita root beer in a bottle. A lot of folks order the fried shrimp po-boy, too. You can get all the sandwiches on a soft bun rather than French bread, if you prefer. That seems to be a popular option. Maybe they aren't as messy that way?! During lunchtime, it can take a while to get your order, but at other times it takes just a few minutes. Some folks complain about the thin sauce making the bread soggy. Yes, the sauce is a bit thin. It requires that you eat it quickly for an optimum experience. It's best eaten hot anyway, though. I live nearby. Maybe if I lived far away and needed them to travel, it would bother me. My only complaint is that they close early--at 3 p.m. But then, having to wait seems to make them just that much better.

I ventured to Bear's off reviews I read on Yelp (muchas gracias!), and I was not disappointed! This place is rustic, quaint, and family owned and operated. But, don't let the exterior of the building or 'mom and pop' feel scare you away. Walk in and walk directly up to the counter and order... simple as that! Credit cards are accepted for orders of $20 or more. I ordered the half shrimp poboy along with a small fry. The poboy was the perfect size for me, and honestly, I didn't need the small fry because the poboy was plenty filling. The bread was about 5" long and filled with freshly boiled shrimp smothered in this amazing, almost cheesy, Cajun sauce. I ordered my poboy 'dressed', meaning it came with onions, tomatoes, and pickles. This was probably the most hearty sandwich I have ever had! This place gets really busy for lunch, and the service suffers because of that. I would recommend getting to the restaurant early or calling in to order.

This is our neighborhood favorite. The burgers are huge, juicy, and delicious. Salads are fresh and portions are big enough for two. Every meal we've had, and there have been many, were outstanding.

We made the trip up from New Orleans and it was worth it. If you're heading to Abita for a visit, stop here before or after.

THIS RATING IS FOR MANDEVILLE BEAR'S ONLY!! A few weeks ago I patronized the Bear's in Mandeville and experienced AWFUL service of which I wanted to share with all past, present, and potential customers. I'll try to keep the details concise. On the way home from work, I stopped in and ordered a roast beef po-boy and fries to go. It was about 7-ish and empty (I was the only customer). When the order was ready, the waitress (Emily) brought the bagged food and the bill to my table. I paid the bill ($20 for a poboy, fry and tip seems a little steep but that's a discussion for another day) picked up the bag and left. When I got home 10 mins later--exhausted after work and ready to chow--I opened the bag and discovered it contained only the fries. (Nooooo!!) So disappointed but not too terribly angry I called Bear's, spoke with Emily and she said "Oh yeah! That was me and you left the po-boy on the table." Although I was confused about why the po-boy was NOT in the BAG, I didn't say anything or make an issue out of it b/c Emily told me "no problem," she was going to put a note in the cash register (so a voucher of sorts) for the next time I came in to the location. "No problem" I was told repeatedly. About a week later, I begin to head on over to Bear's with my husband to pick up my po-boy (that I PAID for but never received) as we were on our way out of town to the beach (we were looking forward to splitting it on the road). I call to place the order and coincidentally it's Emily who answers the phone. "Yeah, I remember!" she says...this time with a big "BUT" added to it. "I'm not authorized to give you a po-boy." I'm going to skip over some of this part which just includes me being confused and asking "What'dyamean" type questions. As we were already pulling into the parking lot, I just walked in (with her still on the phone, comically) and she continues telling me "Sorry." I ask to see the manager. I could see Emily talking to a woman in the back, who I presumed was the manager, and Emily came back out--Hello, unbelievably the manager would NOT come talk to me!!!-- and said, essentially "The manager says we can not replace your po-boy; we did our job; you left it on the table; it's not our problem." Uhhhhh...What?? Is this a joke? I say to Emily, "What happened to you putting the note in the register, it'd be no problem, blah, blah, blah. "I never told you that," lies Emily. I finally press for her to actually--myself--physically speak to the manager who BEGRUDGINGLY comes from out of her cave to tell me IN PERSON the same refrain: We did our job. It's not our fault. Too bad. No po-boy for you. It only became Too Bad So Sad for me when I BELIEVED the Bear's employee who told me there would be NO PROBLEM. This is WHY I did not drive back to retrieve my po-boy that same night. But yeah, you're right: It's my freaking problem now. I told the manager I wanted to speak with the owner and she said he comes into the store infrequently, on his own schedule and that she couldn't give me his contact nor did she ask me for my contact info for him to follow-up with me. Also, to add further insult, while I was talking to the manager I could see Emily and two other employees laughing and giggling about the situation. Thanks, Emily. You're doing a heck of a job, Brownie. Needless to say this has left a bad taste in my mouth. (Alas, not roast beef.) If this is their level of customer service, I have no interest in going back--and the overpriced menu certainly doesn't help either. This location is a far cry from the level of service and food quality I get from the Covington location. Let me say again: Won't be going back.

If this is what a po boy is then they are good. They are filling, and they make you want to go to sleep. I would not recommend eating on in the middle of the day. You will suffer the consequences. But people seem to love them.

SO GOOOOOOD!!! THE BEST Roast Beef Po-boy ever! And trust me, i've been around. It is made to perfection. The actual place is a hole in the wall and is always crowded, so call in advance to order your sandwich. And FYI, the Bears in Mandeville does not taste the same as the one from Covington. Go to Covington! Also, they have weird hours and take random days off, so call ahead.

I'll start out with what everyone thinks when they go to Bear's: It's really really expensive. If you hadn't already eaten there and went in, the prices may actually deter you from eating there. However, If you've had bear's before, you know the craving. Like a druggie getting your fix, you will pay the exorbitant prices for some of the best po boys to be had anywhere. My personal favorite was always the french fry po boy - french bread packed with loads of fries, then topped off with roast beef and gravy. Fully dressed too, please! The ferdie is amazing as well, and the bbq beef... ok, there really isn't any po boy here that isn't amazing and totally worth the arm and leg they charge. Highly recommend it to everyone. They really need to get better hours though, as they are generally closed anytime I do manage to make it down to covington.

I grew up on the lakefront in Mandeville and I can still remember when Big Bears was close by in a shed in front of a hardware store. You would have to take a number and wait in your car for long periods because they were always so busy. But let me tell you...this is hands down the best roast beef poboy I have ever had. I've been living in New Orleans for almost 20 years now and I always compare every poboy to Bears. My husband is now hooked on the Ferdie, so we have to drive an hour to get our fix. All these years later, it still can't be beat!

I Travel Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida with work. I live 4 blocks from Bears in Covington. there is no place I have ever tried in my travel that can come close to having a sandwich or PoBoy that taste as good as Bears. This place was recommended to me & my family when we moved to the area in August 2010. We were iffy because it looked like a hole in the wall...BUT so glad we tried it! BEST friggin mouth watering Roast Beef Poboys ever! We moved August 2011 & we make the drive to get that delicious Poboy!!! I do wish they were open a little later than 3pm and Sundays would be nice too :) Also, if your meal is under $20 they only accept cash and check as payment, no debit or credit. $20 and over you may use your debit/credit card. They do have an ATM inside.

I work a couple of blocks away and don't eat there as often as I would like because the lines are way long- it is THAT GOOD. Next to a dingy little laundromat, you would never guess it. But a shrimp poboy with an Abita rootbeer is one of the best lunches ever. When we order from work, we make sure we get the call in before 10:30. I did eat there on Friday and went in around 2 (they close at 3) and it wasn't too bad. The worn taxidermied bear is a great conversation piece while you wait. This is worth the drive across the bridge to come to Covington.

This place gets the full five stars based on the food alone. The rest of the place truly lacks, but who cares. Here in the Deep South Louisiana area, where the best food in the world is found- it's all about the food! In other areas of the country, you have to take into account things like decor and atmosphere- because that's what compensates for the lack of food taste out there. (admittedly, I'm a little biased) When I lived out of state, trips back to La were planned, in part, because of the Ferdie Poboy Bears offers.No kidding.

It has been a WICKED long since I have gone here. I went when I was on a trip in the sixth grade (I am now a senior in college), but the deliciousness has haunted me ever since. I think I had a ham or some sort of pork sandwich and it tasted like yummy bacon. I remember the sandwich's juices dripping down my arms yet it being so very very yummy. It is definitely a hole in the wall but as my relatives who took us to the place say "the hole in the walls are where the good po'boys reside." So please go! For arguably the best po'boy's around, Bear's is the place to go. It's a small, drab restaurant, but the food is excellent and you will receive true southern hospitality here. The guy at the counter was really friendly and took the time to explain to each of my 23 friends exactly what was in each po'boy (my friends have this habit of not listening the first time :-P), but the waiter wasn't frustrated at this at all. They will gladly tell you what they think is their very best po'boy (shrimp and beef). But if you choose something other than that, don't worry - it will still be excellent. As a heads up, they don't do oyster po'boys. My friends and I were introduced to this place by a woman whose house we gutted last year - this is one of her favorite places to eat. They're only open short hours - from 10 - 3pm every day except Sunday and Monday (I think).

My favorite northshore hole in the wall sandwich shop. Where to begin??? The signature of course is the Roast Beef Po-boy. You will need a roll of paer towels to accompany this sandwich. My favorite is the BBQ beef on bun, it's a very different barbecue sauce - don't get me wrong it isn't out there, but it's not ye old Frenchman's BBQ sauce in a jug either. My point, it's damn good. Fried shrimp and oyster po-boys are "very nice" as Borat might say. Oysters and shrimp will fall out of your po-boy because they don't skimp on them one bit. The Ferdie is shamefully good, I love it like a fat boy loves chocolate cake. The French Fry with debris roast beef po-boy should be called "Heart Attack on French" but you know it's got to be good too!!! The building was once a convenience store so yes it's a dump, but a clean and tidy dump. You don't go there for the atmosphere. The place is always packed and parking can be a little tough sometimes, but it's worth it. Prices are great for the amount of food you get. Do yourself a favor and go to Bear's! It's food porn.

Great subs and Po Boys. I came here twice on a 1 week trip. The BBQ sandwich was awesome, and the shrimp Po Boy was not as good, but still hit the spot. The portions are huge, so get a large and split it with another person.

Hands down this is the place to go for a mouth watering, melt in your mouth, wanna slap your grandma poboy. Every time I come home to visit my family, I have to make at least one stop here. It doesnt look like much on the outside/inside, but you will not be disappointed. They are known for their Roast Beef PoBoys. I also enjoy the BBq and the shrimp. Must try this place if you have never been. Just wish the hours were a little longer. Now, Im craving one, almost makes me want to buy a plane ticket now. Not to mention it is snowball season in Louisiana. I really wished California had Snowball stands and Roast Beef PoBoys.

After I came here for the first time, I ate here four more times and every single time it was delicious. The Roast Beef (debris) po boy, the shrimp po boy and the Ferdi do not disappoint. It's hard to order out of those options since it's so yummy you don't want to mess with it. The bread is to point, the po boy is moist (ugh I hate this word) but not soggy, and the blend of flavors is just perfect. The debris fries come with melted cheese and a "side" of beef debris you can dip or pour on top of your fries as you wish. All of those things make Bear's in Covington hard to beat. Do yourself a favor and come here, just watch the open days and working hours.

Some say it's the best po-boy place on the North Shore. I had the roast beef, dressed, and it was very good. The bread was certainly fresh and the meat was lean. It was served with plenty of gravy on it and was very filling. And I only got the 1/2 po-boy! My friend got the fried chicken po-boy and said it was excellent. The prices are budget friendly. The fries were ok, nothing special. And the potato salad claimed to be heavenly and homemade. I believe the homemade part, but was not impressed with the taste or texture. So I'd skip it. No fountain drinks - just stuff in cans. But they do sell Abita Root Beer, which is locally made and has a sharp bite to it. The dining area is very small and you may have to get your order to go. Otherwise, eat up and move on as people will be hovering and eying your table. People start arriving about 11:30 am and by 12:30 the place is jammed. The locals love it. Parking will be a challenge as the lot is very small. Many people park along the street or down a block or two and walk over. Makes the odds of getting trapped in place by illegal parking much lower. In short, this place has awesome po-boys. But it is recommended that you call ahead to place your order, and then park somewhere and go in and get your order and then go to a park or something to enjoy your lunch.

Not sure what all the hype about this place is. Po-boys were average tasting at best, and kind of pricey for what you get. I got the roast beef poboy at the suggestion of many reviewers. Not even close to the best I have ever had.

Bear's definitely wins the best roast beef poboy on the Northshore! Oh wow, it was delicious!! Last weekend we drove across the Lake to go to the Whole Town Garage Sale in Abita Springs. After walking around Abita Springs half of the day we were ready for a good lunch. We attempted to find lunch there in the little town, but seeing as it was 12:30 and everybody else was thinking the same thing, all the restaurants there had people lined up out the doors. We remembered that we had not ever tried Bear's in Covington and since we were nearby, we decided to drive over there. Sadly, they were packed also. The line for the counter to order was long and there was a line to wait for a table to eat there too. We decided to just wait it all out. The place is very small. There are only about 10-12 tables inside. The table area was actually a mess.. All of the napkin dispensers were near empty and the floor needed a good sweeping up. We had to wait at least 30-40 minutes before our order was up. I ordered the roast beef poboy dressed, and my boyfriend got the bbq beef poboy dressed. After the long wait and everything else, we bit into them and were amazed at the quality. It was outstanding. The quantity and price were a great value too.. We have eaten at the Bear's at Gennaro's in Metairie before and their prices are higher. I will definitely stop in for another poboy if I'm in the area again. (I think I would call ahead and get it to go though...lol...)

My husband and I ate there. The food was very good. Since we live in Tennessee it is a rare treat to eat a po'boy. We each had the shrimp and it was very good. The bread is what made the sandwich. The shrimp was plentiful. Almost every bite I had to eat a shrimp that had fallen out of the sandwich. The only downside was the cost. A full po'boy and a one half po'boy with 2 drinks was over $20. To me, that is pretty pricey! We can't wait to go to visit family in Mandeville so that we can eat there again.

This was the first time in a while that I recall taking a bite of my po-boy, then setting it down while I paused to contemplate what I just experienced. It was like having angles caressing each of my taste buds. As I'm thinking about it now, I'm drooling just a little. And that is saying a lot - I was a founding member of a super exclusive po-boy club back in the day, so this was definitely not my first ro-deo. We tried both the roast beef and BBQ and both were fantastic. I don't think it would be worth the trip from NOLA alone, but if you were in town for an event, say the abita brewery tour, it would definitely be worth your while.

I'm a vegaquarian, but I have plans to pick up a roast beef for my boyfriend so that I can stare at him and ask SO HOW IS IT? midway through his first bite in that completely not annoying way that he just loves. If you are in Covington and see this restaurant is open, do yourself a favor and eat here. It's that good. For some time I have been trying to come to Bear's, but our schedules never worked out. Either they were closed (Mondays and after 3 pm) or I was on the other side of the lake. Well a few weeks ago I was off on a weekday and I finally got to visit. Let me start by saying that I hate made up words. One such word that I see in a lot of reviews is the term "Amazeballs'. I ridicule people who use such ridiculous terms, but I have to say that in this situation it is applicable. Bear's is amazeballs. Now that I've gotten that out of my system I will move on to what you really want to know. Bear's roast beef is a serious contender for best on the Northshore. You won't find any sliced beef here. The shredded beef on my po-boy was rich, garlicy and had a flavor I can only describe as deep. It was much more than just pan drippings converted to a gravy. There was something about that sauce that really set it apart. I will probably never figure it out, but I loved it. From what I've heard the shrimp is just as good as the roast beef, but I don't know if I could ever bring myself to order it after sampling the roast beef. Bear's is an order at the counter and wait for your number to be called type place. That isn't to say that service was poor because it wasn't. The lady behind the counter was sweet, friendly and even offered suggestions on homemade desserts that I politely declined. The last thing I want to mention is actually one of the other reasons it has taken me a while to try Bear's. I don't know if this location is affiliated with the Bear's grill locations, but this restaurant is so far and above better than those places that I would be surprised if they were affiliated. The grill locations are OK, but this place is stellar. Get to Bear's. You will not be disappointed.

I was hanging out on the Northshore with an out-of-town guest and a local New Orleans friend checking out the Abita brewery, state park, and Covington. We were getting hungry so I hopped on yelp and found this place. 36 reviews and it's 5 stars? Gotta check this place out! I mentioned to a Covington native we were headed this way and he said, "Yep, that's the right place to go." And off we went! First off all, it was packed. No spots in the lot so I started to drive off when--gasp!--somebody was pulling out! I turned around and started heading back when--double gasp!--somebody pulled in the the spot off the street. NOOOOO!! Then, what, she saw that I was headed to that very spot and kindly pulled out so I could have it! Foreshadowing to an excellent culinary and service experience much? Little did I know the excellence that was being prepared for me... Walked inside and, despite the small (but stellar) menu, I was still having trouble deciding what to get, since apparently "One of everything!" was not an option. I asked the woman at the counter what she recommended and she said the roast beef. No arguments here, I love me some roast beef po boy! Full, dressed, side of potato salad, DONE. My eating companions got the Ferdie and the cheeseburger po boy. It took a while for us to get our food, meanwhile I'm drooling over other tables and looking lustfully at their meals. Finally our number was called, and frankly, if St. Peter ever calls my name to get into heaven, I'll be happy because THIS PO BOY WILL OBVIOUSLY BE WAITING FOR ME THERE! Cue several minutes of noshing sounds with the occasional "oh my gosh this is so incredible" from the table. I was practically lapping up the roast beef gravy from the paper. Don't judge me, it's THAT good. I'm now considering investing in real estate outside Bear's door so I can enjoy this place constantly. I cannot wait for my next visit. This place may have ruined all other food (and possibly men) for me, but it was worth it.

If I could give this place a zero star I would. What they call a poboy is a joke. Bread was tough probably week old bread. The roast beef was tough and the bbq beef had no flavor. Don't bother on ordering fries either. If this food is prepared fresh I would be astonished. The food was only the beginning of my issues with this place. Service counter was disorganized, looks like a family run business who else would let their staff stand around while customers are waiting to be helped. The lady who assisted me appeared annoyed and rushed. Customer service is definitely not a priority here. They do accept credit cards, but they run it through as an ATM so expect to pay more for your food with a bank fee, their delightful convenience fee, and to top it off they don't run it through for the actual amount. Don't bother stopping here. There are establishments with more to offer.

The BEST in town!! I usually order either the ham and swiss or the shrimp po-boy. Both are outstanding. I call ahead for take out and hope there is a parking spot in the front! The place is packed and the parking can be a little hairy at times. It is well worth it though. DO NOT bother with any other po-boy place in town!!!

I'm no Po Boy expert but if everyone else says this place is good, I'll go along with it. Make sure you call in your order because this isn't fast food. We ordered on the spot and waited almost 20 minutes to get our po boys. The roast beef is good and juicy. The shrimp one was pretty standard.

I'm in LA for about 10 days for work. Went around from NOLA to Monroe. After all is said an done the po boy here was the best one I've had and overall probably one of the best food items I had. I got the Fergie which is ham and roast beef with swiss. The meat was cut really thin and was super juicy. The bread maintained some nice crunch and was super solid. Final thoughts: Check this place out if your in the area and it would probably be worth it to go a bit out your way for it too.

The 1.39 isnt a problem but its the audacity of it because to me, its a racket of a processing company to get an extra 1.39. Believe the hype about this place! It's the best shrimp poboy not only in Covington, but the entire Northshore. It looks like a complete dump when you drive up, but I've learned many of the best meals I've ever had have been in places that look like dumps. You can call in your order if you're in a hurry, because it does take a while when you place your order. They get VERY busy for lunch. I always order shrimp on a bun dressed and add hot sauce and ketchup. The shrimp are perfectly seasoned and crisp. They DO NOT skimp on the shrimp either. It's so overstuffed they are falling out all over the place. I've taken all of the shrimp that are falling out and put them to the side and eaten them for dinner long after my sandwich was gone. THAT'S HOW MUCH SHRIMP IS ON THIS SANDWICH. Ya heard? Sweet baby Jesus it is good. Fantastic! Do yourself a favor and get to Bears!

Which makes all the Po-boys quality tasting. The place is always packed, because the food is 5 stars, but the parking lot and building are way too small for the business. I've traveled a decent amount in my life...and hands down, Bear's is my favorite restaurant in all of the world. When I lived 1,000 miles away and would fly in for visits, I would plan my flights to ensure I arrived on a day and time that it was open. That's how serious I take my addiction to this place. I've never had a bad meal here. Family favorites include the shrimp poboy, bbq beef on a bun, meatball poboy, the potato salad. I could actually name my entire family's order from memory since we go here so much. The bbq sauce is so amazing that another local restaurant bought the recipe and now sells it bottled in grocery stores under a different name. You can actually buy gallons of the bbq sauce directly from Bear's though. That's right. This bbq sauce is so good people buy it by the gallon. Do not underestimate what a line at Bear's will be like. It will be long. You absolutely must program the number in your phone and call 25 minutes before you arrive so that your food is waiting for you. The phone line will be busy the first few times you call. Don't let this deter you. Let this be a reminder that this place is seriously the best and everyone wants in on the action. This is a family owned restaurant at its finest. You will not regret a visit here.

There's a review on the wall that says it all. It goes something like this. "The roast beef po-boy is somehow, and improbably, the juiciest roast beef sandwich you're ever likely to have." This, while completely true, doesn't do justice to the sandwich. It's like the juice from a french dip is in the sandwich instead of on the side, yet doesn't make the tender, crunchy bread soggy at all. If you're lucky enough to be in the area, get one to share with a friend. You won't be disappointed.

Moved to Covington a few months ago and needed a new place to get good po-boys. Luckily, Bears is just down the road from us!! Honestly, for months I'd seen the place, but wasn't sure what it was--thought it was a convenience store. After hearing they had great food, I still was put off by the service station-like appearance and how they seemed to never be open. Our painter overheard me lamenting the lack of po-boys and brought me a Bear's BBQ roast beef to try. I was astounded. It was absolutely THE BEST BBQ BEEF PO-BOY I'd ever eaten. The sauce is remarkably good. They put so much on that it gets all over your face and hands--and your shirt, too. I like it "plain," (no lettuce, tomato, pickle) but do add light mayo. The mayo changes the flavor, adds complexity, and takes down some of the heat. Their fries are well-seasoned and tasty, too. The saucer-sized cookies look homemade and are tasty. I like that I can get an Abita root beer in a bottle. A lot of folks order the fried shrimp po-boy, too. You can get all the sandwiches on a soft bun rather than French bread, if you prefer. That seems to be a popular option. Maybe they aren't as messy that way?! During lunchtime, it can take a while to get your order, but at other times it takes just a few minutes. Some folks complain about the thin sauce making the bread soggy. Yes, the sauce is a bit thin. It requires that you eat it quickly for an optimum experience. It's best eaten hot anyway, though. I live nearby. Maybe if I lived far away and needed them to travel, it would bother me. My only complaint is that they close early--at 3 p.m. But then, having to wait seems to make them just that much better.

I ventured to Bear's off reviews I read on Yelp (muchas gracias!), and I was not disappointed! This place is rustic, quaint, and family owned and operated. But, don't let the exterior of the building or 'mom and pop' feel scare you away. Walk in and walk directly up to the counter and order... simple as that! Credit cards are accepted for orders of $20 or more. I ordered the half shrimp poboy along with a small fry. The poboy was the perfect size for me, and honestly, I didn't need the small fry because the poboy was plenty filling. The bread was about 5" long and filled with freshly boiled shrimp smothered in this amazing, almost cheesy, Cajun sauce. I ordered my poboy 'dressed', meaning it came with onions, tomatoes, and pickles. This was probably the most hearty sandwich I have ever had! This place gets really busy for lunch, and the service suffers because of that. I would recommend getting to the restaurant early or calling in to order.

THIS RATING IS FOR MANDEVILLE BEAR'S ONLY!! A few weeks ago I patronized the Bear's in Mandeville and experienced AWFUL service of which I wanted to share with all past, present, and potential customers. I'll try to keep the details concise. On the way home from work, I stopped in and ordered a roast beef po-boy and fries to go. It was about 7-ish and empty (I was the only customer). When the order was ready, the waitress (Emily) brought the bagged food and the bill to my table. I paid the bill ($20 for a poboy, fry and tip seems a little steep but that's a discussion for another day) picked up the bag and left. When I got home 10 mins later--exhausted after work and ready to chow--I opened the bag and discovered it contained only the fries. (Nooooo!!) So disappointed but not too terribly angry I called Bear's, spoke with Emily and she said "Oh yeah! That was me and you left the po-boy on the table." Although I was confused about why the po-boy was NOT in the BAG, I didn't say anything or make an issue out of it b/c Emily told me "no problem," she was going to put a note in the cash register (so a voucher of sorts) for the next time I came in to the location. "No problem" I was told repeatedly. About a week later, I begin to head on over to Bear's with my husband to pick up my po-boy (that I PAID for but never received) as we were on our way out of town to the beach (we were looking forward to splitting it on the road). I call to place the order and coincidentally it's Emily who answers the phone. "Yeah, I remember!" she says...this time with a big "BUT" added to it. "I'm not authorized to give you a po-boy." I'm going to skip over some of this part which just includes me being confused and asking "What'dyamean" type questions. As we were already pulling into the parking lot, I just walked in (with her still on the phone, comically) and she continues telling me "Sorry." I ask to see the manager. I could see Emily talking to a woman in the back, who I presumed was the manager, and Emily came back out--Hello, unbelievably the manager would NOT come talk to me!!!-- and said, essentially "The manager says we can not replace your po-boy; we did our job; you left it on the table; it's not our problem." Uhhhhh...What?? Is this a joke? I say to Emily, "What happened to you putting the note in the register, it'd be no problem, blah, blah, blah. "I never told you that," lies Emily. I finally press for her to actually--myself--physically speak to the manager who BEGRUDGINGLY comes from out of her cave to tell me IN PERSON the same refrain: We did our job. It's not our fault. Too bad. No po-boy for you. It only became Too Bad So Sad for me when I BELIEVED the Bear's employee who told me there would be NO PROBLEM. This is WHY I did not drive back to retrieve my po-boy that same night. But yeah, you're right: It's my freaking problem now. I told the manager I wanted to speak with the owner and she said he comes into the store infrequently, on his own schedule and that she couldn't give me his contact nor did she ask me for my contact info for him to follow-up with me. Also, to add further insult, while I was talking to the manager I could see Emily and two other employees laughing and giggling about the situation. Thanks, Emily. You're doing a heck of a job, Brownie. Needless to say this has left a bad taste in my mouth. (Alas, not roast beef.) If this is their level of customer service, I have no interest in going back--and the overpriced menu certainly doesn't help either. This location is a far cry from the level of service and food quality I get from the Covington location. Let me say again: Won't be going back.

I'll start out with what everyone thinks when they go to Bear's: It's really really expensive. If you hadn't already eaten there and went in, the prices may actually deter you from eating there. However, If you've had bear's before, you know the craving. Like a druggie getting your fix, you will pay the exorbitant prices for some of the best po boys to be had anywhere. My personal favorite was always the french fry po boy - french bread packed with loads of fries, then topped off with roast beef and gravy. Fully dressed too, please! The ferdie is amazing as well, and the bbq beef... ok, there really isn't any po boy here that isn't amazing and totally worth the arm and leg they charge. Highly recommend it to everyone. They really need to get better hours though, as they are generally closed anytime I do manage to make it down to covington.

I grew up on the lakefront in Mandeville and I can still remember when Big Bears was close by in a shed in front of a hardware store. You would have to take a number and wait in your car for long periods because they were always so busy. But let me tell you...this is hands down the best roast beef poboy I have ever had. I work a couple of blocks away and don't eat there as often as I would like because the lines are way long- it is THAT GOOD. Next to a dingy little laundromat, you would never guess it. But a shrimp poboy with an Abita rootbeer is one of the best lunches ever. When we order from work, we make sure we get the call in before 10:30. I did eat there on Friday and went in around 2 (they close at 3) and it wasn't too bad. The worn taxidermied bear is a great conversation piece while you wait. This is worth the drive across the bridge to come to Covington.

Here in the Deep South Louisiana area, where the best food in the world is found- it's all about the food! It has been a WICKED long since I have gone here. I went when I was on a trip in the sixth grade (I am now a senior in college), but the deliciousness has haunted me ever since. For arguably the best po'boy's around, Bear's is the place to go. It's a small, drab restaurant, but the food is excellent and you will receive true southern hospitality here. The guy at the counter was really friendly and took the time to explain to each of my 23 friends exactly what was in each po'boy (my friends have this habit of not listening the first time :-P), but the waiter wasn't frustrated at this at all. They will gladly tell you what they think is their very best po'boy (shrimp and beef). But if you choose something other than that, don't worry - it will still be excellent. As a heads up, they don't do oyster po'boys. My friends and I were introduced to this place by a woman whose house we gutted last year - this is one of her favorite places to eat. They're only open short hours - from 10 - 3pm every day except Sunday and Monday (I think).

My favorite northshore hole in the wall sandwich shop. Where to begin??? The signature of course is the Roast Beef Po-boy. You will need a roll of paer towels to accompany this sandwich. My favorite is the BBQ beef on bun, it's a very different barbecue sauce - don't get me wrong it isn't out there, but it's not ye old Frenchman's BBQ sauce in a jug either. My point, it's damn good. Fried shrimp and oyster po-boys are "very nice" as Borat might say. Oysters and shrimp will fall out of your po-boy because they don't skimp on them one bit. The Ferdie is shamefully good, I love it like a fat boy loves chocolate cake. The French Fry with debris roast beef po-boy should be called "Heart Attack on French" but you know it's got to be good too!!! The building was once a convenience store so yes it's a dump, but a clean and tidy dump. You don't go there for the atmosphere. The place is always packed and parking can be a little tough sometimes, but it's worth it. Prices are great for the amount of food you get. Do yourself a favor and go to Bear's! It's food porn.

When the order was ready, the waitress (Emily) brought the bagged food and the bill to my table. I paid the bill ($20 for a poboy, fry and tip seems a little steep but that's a discussion for another day) picked up the bag and left. When I got home 10 mins later--exhausted after work and ready to chow--I opened the bag and discovered it contained only the fries. (Nooooo!!) So disappointed but not too terribly angry I called Bear's, spoke with Emily and she said "Oh yeah! That was me and you left the po-boy on the table." Although I was confused about why the po-boy was NOT in the BAG, I didn't say anything or make an issue out of it b/c Emily told me "no problem," she was going to put a note in the cash register (so a voucher of sorts) for the next time I came in to the location. "No problem" I was told repeatedly. About a week later, I begin to head on over to Bear's with my husband to pick up my po-boy (that I PAID for but never received) as we were on our way out of town to the beach (we were looking forward to splitting it on the road). I call to place the order and coincidentally it's Emily who answers the phone. "Yeah, I remember!" she says...this time with a big "BUT" added to it. "I'm not authorized to give you a po-boy." I'm going to skip over some of this part which just includes me being confused and asking "What'dyamean" type questions. As we were already pulling into the parking lot, I just walked in (with her still on the phone, comically) and she continues telling me "Sorry." I ask to see the manager. I could see Emily talking to a woman in the back, who I presumed was the manager, and Emily came back out--Hello, unbelievably the manager would NOT come talk to me!!!-- and said, essentially "The manager says we can not replace your po-boy; we did our job; you left it on the table; it's not our problem." Uhhhhh...What?? Is this a joke? I say to Emily, "What happened to you putting the note in the register, it'd be no problem, blah, blah, blah. "I never told you that," lies Emily. I finally press for her to actually--myself--physically speak to the manager who BEGRUDGINGLY comes from out of her cave to tell me IN PERSON the same refrain: We did our job. It's not our fault. Too bad. No po-boy for you. It only became Too Bad So Sad for me when I BELIEVED the Bear's employee who told me there would be NO PROBLEM. This is WHY I did not drive back to retrieve my po-boy that same night. But yeah, you're right: It's my freaking problem now. I told the manager I wanted to speak with the owner and she said he comes into the store infrequently, on his own schedule and that she couldn't give me his contact nor did she ask me for my contact info for him to follow-up with me. Also, to add further insult, while I was talking to the manager I could see Emily and two other employees laughing and giggling about the situation. Thanks, Emily. You're doing a heck of a job, Brownie. Needless to say this has left a bad taste in my mouth. (Alas, not roast beef.) If this is their level of customer service, I have no interest in going back--and the overpriced menu certainly doesn't help either. This location is a far cry from the level of service and food quality I get from the Covington location. Let me say again: Won't be going back.

I'll start out with what everyone thinks when they go to Bear's: It's really really expensive. If you hadn't already eaten there and went in, the prices may actually deter you from eating there. However, If you've had bear's before, you know the craving. Like a druggie getting your fix, you will pay the exorbitant prices for some of the best po boys to be had anywhere. My personal favorite was always the french fry po boy - french bread packed with loads of fries, then topped off with roast beef and gravy. Fully dressed too, please! The ferdie is amazing as well, and the bbq beef... ok, there really isn't any po boy here that isn't amazing and totally worth the arm and leg they charge. Highly recommend it to everyone. They really need to get better hours though, as they are generally closed anytime I do manage to make it down to covington.

I grew up on the lakefront in Mandeville and I can still remember when Big Bears was close by in a shed in front of a hardware store. You would have to take a number and wait in your car for long periods because they were always so busy. But let me tell you...this is hands down the best roast beef poboy I have ever had. I've been living in New Orleans for almost 20 years now and I always compare every poboy to Bears. My husband is now hooked on the Ferdie, so we have to drive an hour to get our fix. All these years later, it still can't be beat!

This place was recommended to me & my family when we moved to the area in August 2010. We were iffy because it looked like a hole in the wall...BUT so glad we tried it! BEST friggin mouth watering Roast Beef Poboys ever! We moved August 2011 & we make the drive to get that delicious Poboy!!! I do wish they were open a little later than 3pm and Sundays would be nice too :) Also, if your meal is under $20 they only accept cash and check as payment, no debit or credit. $20 and over you may use your debit/credit card. They do have an ATM inside.

I work a couple of blocks away and don't eat there as often as I would like because the lines are way long- it is THAT GOOD. Next to a dingy little laundromat, you would never guess it. But a shrimp poboy with an Abita rootbeer is one of the best lunches ever. When we order from work, we make sure we get the call in before 10:30. I did eat there on Friday and went in around 2 (they close at 3) and it wasn't too bad. The worn taxidermied bear is a great conversation piece while you wait. This is worth the drive across the bridge to come to Covington.

This place gets the full five stars based on the food alone. The rest of the place truly lacks, but who cares. Here in the Deep South Louisiana area, where the best food in the world is found- it's all about the food! In other areas of the country, you have to take into account things like decor and atmosphere- because that's what compensates for the lack of food taste out there. It has been a WICKED long since I have gone here. I went when I was on a trip in the sixth grade (I am now a senior in college), but the deliciousness has haunted me ever since. I think I had a ham or some sort of pork sandwich and it tasted like yummy bacon. I remember the sandwich's juices dripping down my arms yet it being so very very yummy. For arguably the best po'boy's around, Bear's is the place to go. It's a small, drab restaurant, but the food is excellent and you will receive true southern hospitality here. The guy at the counter was really friendly and took the time to explain to each of my 23 friends exactly what was in each po'boy (my friends have this habit of not listening the first time :-P), but the waiter wasn't frustrated at this at all. They will gladly tell you what they think is their very best po'boy (shrimp and beef). But if you choose something other than that, don't worry - it will still be excellent. As a heads up, they don't do oyster po'boys. My friends and I were introduced to this place by a woman whose house we gutted last year - this is one of her favorite places to eat. They're only open short hours - from 10 - 3pm every day except Sunday and Monday (I think).

My favorite northshore hole in the wall sandwich shop. Where to begin??? The signature of course is the Roast Beef Po-boy. You will need a roll of paer towels to accompany this sandwich. My favorite is the BBQ beef on bun, it's a very different barbecue sauce - don't get me wrong it isn't out there, but it's not ye old Frenchman's BBQ sauce in a jug either. My point, it's damn good. Fried shrimp and oyster po-boys are "very nice" as Borat might say. Oysters and shrimp will fall out of your po-boy because they don't skimp on them one bit. The Ferdie is shamefully good, I love it like a fat boy loves chocolate cake. The French Fry with debris roast beef po-boy should be called "Heart Attack on French" but you know it's got to be good too!!! The building was once a convenience store so yes it's a dump, but a clean and tidy dump. You don't go there for the atmosphere. The place is always packed and parking can be a little tough sometimes, but it's worth it. Prices are great for the amount of food you get. Do yourself a favor and go to Bear's! It's food porn.

Hands down this is the place to go for a mouth watering, melt in your mouth, wanna slap your grandma poboy. Every time I come home to visit my family, I have to make at least one stop here. It doesnt look like much on the outside/inside, but you will not be disappointed. They are known for their Roast Beef PoBoys. I also enjoy the BBq and the shrimp. Must try this place if you have never been. Just wish the hours were a little longer. Now, Im craving one, almost makes me want to buy a plane ticket now. After I came here for the first time, I ate here four more times and every single time it was delicious. The Roast Beef (debris) po boy, the shrimp po boy and the Ferdi do not disappoint. It's hard to order out of those options since it's so yummy you don't want to mess with it. The bread is to point, the po boy is moist (ugh I hate this word) but not soggy, and the blend of flavors is just perfect. The debris fries come with melted cheese and a "side" of beef debris you can dip or pour on top of your fries as you wish. All of those things make Bear's in Covington hard to beat. Do yourself a favor and come here, just watch the open days and working hours.

Some say it's the best po-boy place on the North Shore. I had the roast beef, dressed, and it was very good. The bread was certainly fresh and the meat was lean. It was served with plenty of gravy on it and was very filling. And I only got the 1/2 po-boy! My friend got the fried chicken po-boy and said it was excellent. The prices are budget friendly. The fries were ok, nothing special. And the potato salad claimed to be heavenly and homemade. I believe the homemade part, but was not impressed with the taste or texture. So I'd skip it. No fountain drinks - just stuff in cans. But they do sell Abita Root Beer, which is locally made and has a sharp bite to it. The dining area is very small and you may have to get your order to go. Otherwise, eat up and move on as people will be hovering and eying your table. People start arriving about 11:30 am and by 12:30 the place is jammed. The locals love it. Parking will be a challenge as the lot is very small. Many people park along the street or down a block or two and walk over. Makes the odds of getting trapped in place by illegal parking much lower. In short, this place has awesome po-boys. But it is recommended that you call ahead to place your order, and then park somewhere and go in and get your order and then go to a park or something to enjoy your lunch.

This was the first time in a while that I recall taking a bite of my po-boy, then setting it down while I paused to contemplate what I just experienced. It was like having angles caressing each of my taste buds. As I'm thinking about it now, I'm drooling just a little. And that is saying a lot - I was a founding member of a super exclusive po-boy club back in the day, so this was definitely not my first ro-deo. We tried both the roast beef and BBQ and both were fantastic. I don't think it would be worth the trip from NOLA alone, but if you were in town for an event, say the abita brewery tour, it would definitely be worth your while.

Bear's definitely wins the best roast beef poboy on the Northshore! Oh wow, it was delicious!! Last weekend we drove across the Lake to go to the Whole Town Garage Sale in Abita Springs. After walking around Abita Springs half of the day we were ready for a good lunch. We attempted to find lunch there in the little town, but seeing as it was 12:30 and everybody else was thinking the same thing, all the restaurants there had people lined up out the doors. We remembered that we had not ever tried Bear's in Covington and since we were nearby, we decided to drive over there. Sadly, they were packed also. The line for the counter to order was long and there was a line to wait for a table to eat there too. We decided to just wait it all out. The place is very small. There are only about 10-12 tables inside. The table area was actually a mess.. All of the napkin dispensers were near empty and the floor needed a good sweeping up. We had to wait at least 30-40 minutes before our order was up. I ordered the roast beef poboy dressed, and my boyfriend got the bbq beef poboy dressed. After the long wait and everything else, we bit into them and were amazed at the quality. It was outstanding. The quantity and price were a great value too.. We have eaten at the Bear's at Gennaro's in Metairie before and their prices are higher. I will definitely stop in for another poboy if I'm in the area again. (I think I would call ahead and get it to go though...lol...)

My husband and I ate there. The food was very good. Since we live in Tennessee it is a rare treat to eat a po'boy. We each had the shrimp and it was very good. The bread is what made the sandwich. The shrimp was plentiful. Almost every bite I had to eat a shrimp that had fallen out of the sandwich. The only downside was the cost. A full po'boy and a one half po'boy with 2 drinks was over $20. To me, that is pretty pricey! We can't wait to go to visit family in Mandeville so that we can eat there again.

If you are in Covington and see this restaurant is open, do yourself a favor and eat here. It's that good. For some time I have been trying to come to Bear's, but our schedules never worked out. Either they were closed (Mondays and after 3 pm) or I was on the other side of the lake. Well a few weeks ago I was off on a weekday and I finally got to visit. Let me start by saying that I hate made up words. One such word that I see in a lot of reviews is the term "Amazeballs'. I ridicule people who use such ridiculous terms, but I have to say that in this situation it is applicable. Bear's is amazeballs. Now that I've gotten that out of my system I will move on to what you really want to know. Bear's roast beef is a serious contender for best on the Northshore. You won't find any sliced beef here. The shredded beef on my po-boy was rich, garlicy and had a flavor I can only describe as deep. It was much more than just pan drippings converted to a gravy. There was something about that sauce that really set it apart. I will probably never figure it out, but I loved it. From what I've heard the shrimp is just as good as the roast beef, but I don't know if I could ever bring myself to order it after sampling the roast beef. Bear's is an order at the counter and wait for your number to be called type place. That isn't to say that service was poor because it wasn't. The lady behind the counter was sweet, friendly and even offered suggestions on homemade desserts that I politely declined. The last thing I want to mention is actually one of the other reasons it has taken me a while to try Bear's. I don't know if this location is affiliated with the Bear's grill locations, but this restaurant is so far and above better than those places that I would be surprised if they were affiliated. The grill locations are OK, but this place is stellar. Get to Bear's. You will not be disappointed.

If I could give this place a zero star I would. What they call a poboy is a joke. Bread was tough probably week old bread. The roast beef was tough and the bbq beef had no flavor. Don't bother on ordering fries either. If this food is prepared fresh I would be astonished. The food was only the beginning of my issues with this place. Service counter was disorganized, looks like a family run business who else would let their staff stand around while customers are waiting to be helped. The lady who assisted me appeared annoyed and rushed. Customer service is definitely not a priority here. They do accept credit cards, but they run it through as an ATM so expect to pay more for your food with a bank fee, their delightful convenience fee, and to top it off they don't run it through for the actual amount. Don't bother stopping here. There are establishments with more to offer.

I was hanging out on the Northshore with an out-of-town guest and a local New Orleans friend checking out the Abita brewery, state park, and Covington. We were getting hungry so I hopped on yelp and found this place. 36 reviews and it's 5 stars? Gotta check this place out! I mentioned to a Covington native we were headed this way and he said, "Yep, that's the right place to go." And off we went! First off all, it was packed. No spots in the lot so I started to drive off when--gasp!--somebody was pulling out! I turned around and started heading back when--double gasp!--somebody pulled in the the spot off the street. NOOOOO!! Then, what, she saw that I was headed to that very spot and kindly pulled out so I could have it! Foreshadowing to an excellent culinary and service experience much? Little did I know the excellence that was being prepared for me... Walked inside and, despite the small (but stellar) menu, I was still having trouble deciding what to get, since apparently "One of everything!" was not an option. I asked the woman at the counter what she recommended and she said the roast beef. No arguments here, I love me some roast beef po boy! Full, dressed, side of potato salad, DONE. My eating companions got the Ferdie and the cheeseburger po boy. It took a while for us to get our food, meanwhile I'm drooling over other tables and looking lustfully at their meals. Finally our number was called, and frankly, if St. Peter ever calls my name to get into heaven, I'll be happy because THIS PO BOY WILL OBVIOUSLY BE WAITING FOR ME THERE! Cue several minutes of noshing sounds with the occasional "oh my gosh this is so incredible" from the table. I was practically lapping up the roast beef gravy from the paper. Don't judge me, it's THAT good. I'm now considering investing in real estate outside Bear's door so I can enjoy this place constantly. I cannot wait for my next visit. This place may have ruined all other food (and possibly men) for me, but it was worth it.

Believe the hype about this place! It's the best shrimp poboy not only in Covington, but the entire Northshore. It looks like a complete dump when you drive up, but I've learned many of the best meals I've ever had have been in places that look like dumps. You can call in your order if you're in a hurry, because it does take a while when you place your order. They get VERY busy for lunch. I always order shrimp on a bun dressed and add hot sauce and ketchup. The shrimp are perfectly seasoned and crisp. They DO NOT skimp on the shrimp either. It's so overstuffed they are falling out all over the place. I've taken all of the shrimp that are falling out and put them to the side and eaten them for dinner long after my sandwich was gone. THAT'S HOW MUCH SHRIMP IS ON THIS SANDWICH. Ya heard? Sweet baby Jesus it is good. Fantastic! Do yourself a favor and get to Bears!

I've traveled a decent amount in my life...and hands down, Bear's is my favorite restaurant in all of the world. When I lived 1,000 miles away and would fly in for visits, I would plan my flights to ensure I arrived on a day and time that it was open. That's how serious I take my addiction to this place. I've never had a bad meal here. Family favorites include the shrimp poboy, bbq beef on a bun, meatball poboy, the potato salad. I could actually name my entire family's order from memory since we go here so much. The bbq sauce is so amazing that another local restaurant bought the recipe and now sells it bottled in grocery stores under a different name. You can actually buy gallons of the bbq sauce directly from Bear's though. That's right. This bbq sauce is so good people buy it by the gallon. Do not underestimate what a line at Bear's will be like. It will be long. You absolutely must program the number in your phone and call 25 minutes before you arrive so that your food is waiting for you. The phone line will be busy the first few times you call. Don't let this deter you. Let this be a reminder that this place is seriously the best and everyone wants in on the action. This is a family owned restaurant at its finest. You will not regret a visit here.

There's a review on the wall that says it all. It goes something like this. "The roast beef po-boy is somehow, and improbably, the juiciest roast beef sandwich you're ever likely to have." This, while completely true, doesn't do justice to the sandwich. It's like the juice from a french dip is in the sandwich instead of on the side, yet doesn't make the tender, crunchy bread soggy at all. If you're lucky enough to be in the area, get one to share with a friend. You won't be disappointed.

Moved to Covington a few months ago and needed a new place to get good po-boys. Luckily, Bears is just down the road from us!! Honestly, for months I'd seen the place, but wasn't sure what it was--thought it was a convenience store. After hearing they had great food, I still was put off by the service station-like appearance and how they seemed to never be open. Our painter overheard me lamenting the lack of po-boys and brought me a Bear's BBQ roast beef to try. I was astounded. It was absolutely THE BEST BBQ BEEF PO-BOY I'd ever eaten. The sauce is remarkably good. They put so much on that it gets all over your face and hands--and your shirt, too. I like it "plain," (no lettuce, tomato, pickle) but do add light mayo. The mayo changes the flavor, adds complexity, and takes down some of the heat. Their fries are well-seasoned and tasty, too. The saucer-sized cookies look homemade and are tasty. I like that I can get an Abita root beer in a bottle. A lot of folks order the fried shrimp po-boy, too. You can get all the sandwiches on a soft bun rather than French bread, if you prefer. That seems to be a popular option. Maybe they aren't as messy that way?! During lunchtime, it can take a while to get your order, but at other times it takes just a few minutes. Some folks complain about the thin sauce making the bread soggy. Yes, the sauce is a bit thin. It requires that you eat it quickly for an optimum experience. It's best eaten hot anyway, though. I live nearby. Maybe if I lived far away and needed them to travel, it would bother me. I ventured to Bear's off reviews I read on Yelp (muchas gracias!), and I was not disappointed! This place is rustic, quaint, and family owned and operated. But, don't let the exterior of the building or 'mom and pop' feel scare you away. Walk in and walk directly up to the counter and order... simple as that! Credit cards are accepted for orders of $20 or more. I ordered the half shrimp poboy along with a small fry. The poboy was the perfect size for me, and honestly, I didn't need the small fry because the poboy was plenty filling. The bread was about 5" long and filled with freshly boiled shrimp smothered in this amazing, almost cheesy, Cajun sauce. I ordered my poboy 'dressed', meaning it came with onions, tomatoes, and pickles. This was probably the most hearty sandwich I have ever had! This place gets really busy for lunch, and the service suffers because of that. I would recommend getting to the restaurant early or calling in to order.

This is our neighborhood favorite. The burgers are huge, juicy, and delicious. Salads are fresh and portions are big enough for two. Every meal we've had, and there have been many, were outstanding.

We made the trip up from New Orleans and it was worth it. If you're heading to Abita for a visit, stop here before or after.

The BEST in town!! I usually order either the ham and swiss or the shrimp po-boy. Both are outstanding. I call ahead for take out and hope there is a parking spot in the front! The place is packed and the parking can be a little hairy at times. It is well worth it though. DO NOT bother with any other po-boy place in town!!!

When I visit this area, it's mandatory that I eat at Bear's. The roast beef poboys are simply THE BEST!! I can never eat an entire sandwich. It's so big. I've tried many poboys and Bear's is simply the best. It's worth $8. Do yourself a favor and GO!

I'm no Po Boy expert but if everyone else says this place is good, I'll go along with it. Make sure you call in your order because this isn't fast food. We ordered on the spot and waited almost 20 minutes to get our po boys. The roast beef is good and juicy. The shrimp one was pretty standard.

I'm in LA for about 10 days for work. Went around from NOLA to Monroe. After all is said an done the po boy here was the best one I've had and overall probably one of the best food items I had. I got the Fergie which is ham and roast beef with swiss. The meat was cut really thin and was super juicy. The bread maintained some nice crunch and was super solid. Final thoughts: Check this place out if your in the area and it would probably be worth it to go a bit out your way for it too.

Food is great as always but for reasons I dont have a clue on they changed their debit system and now charges you 1.39 unless you spend $20. The 1.39 isnt a problem but its the audacity of it because to me, its a racket of a processing company to get an extra 1.39. Wont visit here again just on the principle of schemeing your already loyal customers. SWITCH YOUR CARD PROCESSING COMPANY OR SOMETHING!

If you are in Covington and see this restaurant is open, do yourself a favor and eat here. It's that good. For some time I have been trying to come to Bear's, but our schedules never worked out. Either they were closed (Mondays and after 3 pm) or I was on the other side of the lake. Well a few weeks ago I was off on a weekday and I finally got to visit. Let me start by saying that I hate made up words. One such word that I see in a lot of reviews is the term "Amazeballs'. I ridicule people who use such ridiculous terms, but I have to say that in this situation it is applicable. Bear's is amazeballs. Now that I've gotten that out of my system I will move on to what you really want to know. Bear's roast beef is a serious contender for best on the Northshore. You won't find any sliced beef here. The shredded beef on my po-boy was rich, garlicy and had a flavor I can only describe as deep. It was much more than just pan drippings converted to a gravy. There was something about that sauce that really set it apart. I will probably never figure it out, but I loved it. From what I've heard the shrimp is just as good as the roast beef, but I don't know if I could ever bring myself to order it after sampling the roast beef. Bear's is an order at the counter and wait for your number to be called type place. That isn't to say that service was poor because it wasn't. The lady behind the counter was sweet, friendly and even offered suggestions on homemade desserts that I politely declined. The last thing I want to mention is actually one of the other reasons it has taken me a while to try Bear's. I don't know if this location is affiliated with the Bear's grill locations, but this restaurant is so far and above better than those places that I would be surprised if they were affiliated. The grill locations are OK, but this place is stellar. Get to Bear's. You will not be disappointed.

I am going with five stars on this one. The.roast beef sandwich fully dressed is really good. Bread it's on has a perfect crunch to it, not dried out. The meat again not dried out it.had a perfect moisture to it along with delicious taste.

If I could give this place a zero star I would. What they call a poboy is a joke. Bread was tough probably week old bread. The roast beef was tough and the bbq beef had no flavor. Don't bother on ordering fries either. If this food is prepared fresh I would be astonished. The food was only the beginning of my issues with this place. Service counter was disorganized, looks like a family run business who else would let their staff stand around while customers are waiting to be helped. The lady who assisted me appeared annoyed and rushed. Customer service is definitely not a priority here. They do accept credit cards, but they run it through as an ATM so expect to pay more for your food with a bank fee, their delightful convenience fee, and to top it off they don't run it through for the actual amount. Don't bother stopping here. There are establishments with more to offer.

After I came here for the first time, I ate here four more times and every single time it was delicious. The Roast Beef (debris) po boy, the shrimp po boy and the Ferdi do not disappoint. It's hard to order out of those options since it's so yummy you don't want to mess with it. The bread is to point, the po boy is moist (ugh I hate this word) but not soggy, and the blend of flavors is just perfect. The debris fries come with melted cheese and a "side" of beef debris you can dip or pour on top of your fries as you wish. All of those things make Bear's in Covington hard to beat. Do yourself a favor and come here, just watch the open days and working hours.

Some say it's the best po-boy place on the North Shore. I had the roast beef, dressed, and it was very good. The bread was certainly fresh and the meat was lean. It was served with plenty of gravy on it and was very filling. And I only got the 1/2 po-boy! My friend got the fried chicken po-boy and said it was excellent. The prices are budget friendly. The fries were ok, nothing special. And the potato salad claimed to be heavenly and homemade. I believe the homemade part, but was not impressed with the taste or texture. So I'd skip it. No fountain drinks - just stuff in cans. But they do sell Abita Root Beer, which is locally made and has a sharp bite to it. The dining area is very small and you may have to get your order to go. Otherwise, eat up and move on as people will be hovering and eying your table. People start arriving about 11:30 am and by 12:30 the place is jammed. The locals love it. Parking will be a challenge as the lot is very small. Many people park along the street or down a block or two and walk over. Makes the odds of getting trapped in place by illegal parking much lower. In short, this place has awesome po-boys. But it is recommended that you call ahead to place your order, and then park somewhere and go in and get your order and then go to a park or something to enjoy your lunch.

Not sure what all the hype about this place is. Po-boys were average tasting at best, and kind of pricey for what you get. I got the roast beef poboy at the suggestion of many reviewers. Not even close to the best I have ever had.

This was the first time in a while that I recall taking a bite of my po-boy, then setting it down while I paused to contemplate what I just experienced. It was like having angles caressing each of my taste buds. As I'm thinking about it now, I'm drooling just a little. And that is saying a lot - I was a founding member of a super exclusive po-boy club back in the day, so this was definitely not my first ro-deo. We tried both the roast beef and BBQ and both were fantastic. I don't think it would be worth the trip from NOLA alone, but if you were in town for an event, say the abita brewery tour, it would definitely be worth your while.

YUM. Expect tasty goodness. Receive it. Be happy. I had a shrimp, dressed, and it was stuffed to the gills with huge perfectly fried shrimp. I'm a vegaquarian, but I have plans to pick up a roast beef for my boyfriend so that I can stare at him and ask SO HOW IS IT? midway through his first bite in that completely not annoying way that he just loves. I went at around noon on a weekday. From getting in line to receiving my deliciousness, it took around 20 minutes. Worth it x 1,000. I found my new hangover food! Blessed be!

Bear's definitely wins the best roast beef poboy on the Northshore! Oh wow, it was delicious!! Last weekend we drove across the Lake to go to the Whole Town Garage Sale in Abita Springs. After walking around Abita Springs half of the day we were ready for a good lunch. We attempted to find lunch there in the little town, but seeing as it was 12:30 and everybody else was thinking the same thing, all the restaurants there had people lined up out the doors. We remembered that we had not ever tried Bear's in Covington and since we were nearby, we decided to drive over there. Sadly, they were packed also. The line for the counter to order was long and there was a line to wait for a table to eat there too. We decided to just wait it all out. The place is very small. There are only about 10-12 tables inside. The table area was actually a mess.. All of the napkin dispensers were near empty and the floor needed a good sweeping up. We had to wait at least 30-40 minutes before our order was up. I ordered the roast beef poboy dressed, and my boyfriend got the bbq beef poboy dressed. After the long wait and everything else, we bit into them and were amazed at the quality. It was outstanding. The quantity and price were a great value too.. We have eaten at the Bear's at Gennaro's in Metairie before and their prices are higher. I will definitely stop in for another poboy if I'm in the area again. (I think I would call ahead and get it to go though...lol...)

My husband and I ate there. The food was very good. Since we live in Tennessee it is a rare treat to eat a po'boy. We each had the shrimp and it was very good. The bread is what made the sandwich. The shrimp was plentiful. Almost every bite I had to eat a shrimp that had fallen out of the sandwich. The only downside was the cost. A full po'boy and a one half po'boy with 2 drinks was over $20. To me, that is pretty pricey! We can't wait to go to visit family in Mandeville so that we can eat there again.

Best Roast Beef Po-boys on the Northshore, hands down! The Shrimp Po-boy is way over stuffed and really delicious. They use a traditional New Orleans french bread. Which makes all the Po-boys quality tasting. The place is always packed, because the food is 5 stars, but the parking lot and building are way too small for the business. It would be nice if the Establishment was a bit larger and a nicer experience for a sit down meal. So, we always get it to go! I can't express how great the food is, you must try it for yourself...

I was hanging out on the Northshore with an out-of-town guest and a local New Orleans friend checking out the Abita brewery, state park, and Covington. We were getting hungry so I hopped on yelp and found this place. 36 reviews and it's 5 stars? Gotta check this place out! I mentioned to a Covington native we were headed this way and he said, "Yep, that's the right place to go." And off we went! First off all, it was packed. No spots in the lot so I started to drive off when--gasp!--somebody was pulling out! I turned around and started heading back when--double gasp!--somebody pulled in the the spot off the street. NOOOOO!! Then, what, she saw that I was headed to that very spot and kindly pulled out so I could have it! Foreshadowing to an excellent culinary and service experience much? Little did I know the excellence that was being prepared for me... Walked inside and, despite the small (but stellar) menu, I was still having trouble deciding what to get, since apparently "One of everything!" was not an option. I asked the woman at the counter what she recommended and she said the roast beef. No arguments here, I love me some roast beef po boy! Full, dressed, side of potato salad, DONE. My eating companions got the Ferdie and the cheeseburger po boy. It took a while for us to get our food, meanwhile I'm drooling over other tables and looking lustfully at their meals. Finally our number was called, and frankly, if St. Peter ever calls my name to get into heaven, I'll be happy because THIS PO BOY WILL OBVIOUSLY BE WAITING FOR ME THERE! Cue several minutes of noshing sounds with the occasional "oh my gosh this is so incredible" from the table. I was practically lapping up the roast beef gravy from the paper. Don't judge me, it's THAT good. I'm now considering investing in real estate outside Bear's door so I can enjoy this place constantly. I cannot wait for my next visit. This place may have ruined all other food (and possibly men) for me, but it was worth it.

Believe the hype about this place! It's the best shrimp poboy not only in Covington, but the entire Northshore. It looks like a complete dump when you drive up, but I've learned many of the best meals I've ever had have been in places that look like dumps. You can call in your order if you're in a hurry, because it does take a while when you place your order. They get VERY busy for lunch. I always order shrimp on a bun dressed and add hot sauce and ketchup. The shrimp are perfectly seasoned and crisp. They DO NOT skimp on the shrimp either. It's so overstuffed they are falling out all over the place. I've taken all of the shrimp that are falling out and put them to the side and eaten them for dinner long after my sandwich was gone. THAT'S HOW MUCH SHRIMP IS ON THIS SANDWICH. Ya heard? Sweet baby Jesus it is good. Fantastic! Do yourself a favor and get to Bears!

There's a review on the wall that says it all. It goes something like this. "The roast beef po-boy is somehow, and improbably, the juiciest roast beef sandwich you're ever likely to have." This, while completely true, doesn't do justice to the sandwich. It's like the juice from a french dip is in the sandwich instead of on the side, yet doesn't make the tender, crunchy bread soggy at all. If you're lucky enough to be in the area, get one to share with a friend. You won't be disappointed.

Absolutely LOVE the roast beef poboy. I wish they were open on Mondays since that is my day off from work. They're only opened for lunch which kind of sucks when I want a poboy for dinner. There's one on hwy 22 also but I like the convenience of this one since its closer to my home.

I've traveled a decent amount in my life...and hands down, Bear's is my favorite restaurant in all of the world. When I lived 1,000 miles away and would fly in for visits, I would plan my flights to ensure I arrived on a day and time that it was open. That's how serious I take my addiction to this place. I've never had a bad meal here. Family favorites include the shrimp poboy, bbq beef on a bun, meatball poboy, the potato salad. I could actually name my entire family's order from memory since we go here so much. The bbq sauce is so amazing that another local restaurant bought the recipe and now sells it bottled in grocery stores under a different name. You can actually buy gallons of the bbq sauce directly from Bear's though. That's right. This bbq sauce is so good people buy it by the gallon. Do not underestimate what a line at Bear's will be like. It will be long. You absolutely must program the number in your phone and call 25 minutes before you arrive so that your food is waiting for you. The phone line will be busy the first few times you call. Don't let this deter you. Let this be a reminder that this place is seriously the best and everyone wants in on the action. This is a family owned restaurant at its finest. You will not regret a visit here.
