I've been to this place a couple of times and I had found it ok. But yesterday I had probably the best grilled shrimp po-boy I've had in my life. It was extremely good. I'll be going there more often now.

My friend and I decided to stop at this locally owned restaurant in Buras based upon the friendly recommendation of the clerk at the Chevron up the road. Sounded like a great idea. It is not a very fancy place but it has a bar and two mounted televisions. From the cars in the parking lot, it seemed like the spot where many of the locals dined. The place wasn't very busy when we entered. Almost right away, the young lady asked if it was just the two of us and let us know that we could seat ourselves. She came over to the table with menus, however, her demeanor was more like "I can't wait until this day is over" rather than the southern hospitality that I was hoping for -- no smile, energy or enthusiasm. The first time she came to see if were ready to order she took our drink orders but seemed a little annoyed that we weren't ready. The second time I was ready -- I wanted the lunch special: red beans and rice with my choice of fried fish, shrimp or (?) frog legs. Unfortunately, they were out of red beans and rice. I thought this was strange as it was only around 1pm and the place was near empty (later someone pointed out that we had probably just missed the fishermen lunch hour). Since we couldn't order that we needed more time. She didn't seem at all pleased with the delay or offer up any suggestions (surely she knew that we had never been there before...maybe?). Well, the third time is the charm. I went for the cup of gumbo and asked for a side of corn bread. The gumbo and corn bread was pretty good. My friend's order included fried okra and a side of asparagus. Both were tasty as well. I don't recall her ever coming back to ask if we wanted our cups refilled or if we wanted to order dessert. When we initially saw the menu, we wanted to have dessert but after the bland service we decided to skip it. Overall the meal was good but I think the prices were inflated and the customer service could have been better.

The owner and waitress's in this place are the rudest people I've ever witnessed in a restaurant . Do Not go into this place and expect great service. We went with a group of 8 men. Some only wanted to drink, some wanted just appetizer, the others wanted it all. We were told by the waitress after we all ordered that there was no way she could separate our checks. We got the owner over and he basically said he didn't need our business, he was too busy for us. The food is good if your in the mood to give your hard earned money to these people!

We were driving down to Venice around dinner time, and if you have ever done that drive you would see that there arent a whole lot of choices for food popping out at you. We were starving like Marvin, so I whipped out the smartphone, pulled up the Yelp mobile app, and commenced to search. Black Velvet Oyster Bar popped up, and we decided to give it a try. Boy am I glad we did. the 4 of us Hungry Jack's each had po'boys, and they were very good. Perfectly fried french fries, and a very helpful and attentive staff rounded it all out, I will make my way back to Venice area sometime to go on a fishing weekend, and when I do I will most definitely return to the Black Velvet Oyster Bar.

Always a great meal if you're in the area, Black Velvet isn't a place that I would necessarily consider an Oyster Bar in the traditional sense that you'd find in a city but just a very good restaurant with fresh ingredients that cooks from scratch. You'll usually find a daily special for around $9 and I can vouch for the red beans & rice which also comes with a huge portion of fried chicken or catfish. The "fish bites" special on my last visit was enjoyed by a couple members of my party but didn't seem all that exciting to me. In terms of the regular menu, the Oyster PoBoy is definitely a great choice and I also enjoyed the Catfish PoBoy on my most recent visit. Corn bites are also a predictably tasty appetizer or side dish. As with most seafood places in the area, most of what you'll find here is fried - but done extremely well. I'd go back here any day, the restaurant (and restrooms) are immaculate, the service is friendly, and the food is excellent. Definitely about as good as it gets.

A buddy of mine and I were in town to go fishing off-shore and ate at this place twice. The booze are outrageously expensive. So bring a flask, or just don't drink during your meal. The food is a bit pricey as well. $40 for a steak. I had the seafood baked potato $13, and it was phenomenal. Also, the BBQ shrimp is out of this world. Great food, friendly staff. I will come here again, as it appears to be one of only a small handful of restaurants within 80 miles if the bottom of the peninsula.

The food has been really good and cooked well every time I have visited. Sometimes I would get my meal in 30 minutes, sometimes and hour. That's the only downside. Black Velvet has great lunch specials and a full bar!
