Charming cafe located in downtown Baton Rouge. The cafe is easy to miss as it is away from the areas closer to third street and central business district. The team who prepare the meals are so professional. The Chocolates are made in house which is so cool. The ingredients are fresh. Come early as the menu is first come first serve.

Wow! Talk about Southern Hospitality! Right after I landed in Baton Rouge, I was starving and looking for a place to grab a bite to eat and a good cup of coffee. Of course, I did what any yelper would do, and searched on my handy dandy app... and thanks to all you wonderful people, I came across Strands Cafe. I walked inside to a very cute, European-style cafe, very peaceful, calming, and welcoming. Since I didn't really know what to order (I was so hungry I couldn't think straight), I asked the girl at the counter for recommendations (she is the sweetest, by the way! Such a doll!!!) She recommended the Chicken Salad sandwich, on a Croissant, and the French Onion soup as a side. I had never had chicken salad on a croissant before, but I took her word for it, and and I'm sure glad I did! The crispy flaky buttery croissant complimented the chicken salad so nicely, and the French Onion soup was absolutely phenomenal! I also ordered a Tahitian Vanilla Latte, and just couldn't resist a cinnamon roll. I was told it would be brought out to me, as it would be heated to have that "just out of the oven" taste, and Lilia (the owner) brought out hot and steamy, with frosting dripping off and strawberries (my mouth is watering as I remember how delicious it was!) As I was sitting there eating, I'm sure Lilia noticed that I wasn't really from around there and struck up a conversation with me. I just have to say, she was the sweetest, kindest, most caring person I've ever had the pleasure of meeting! She made me feel welcome, and when I asked for a to-go box for my cinnamon roll (it was HUGE so I couldn't eat all of it), she boxed it up for me, and also brought me some extra pastries for my aunt and cousin as a "welcome to Baton Rouge" gift. I was so touched by Lilia's gesture that I got all teary-eyed and gave her a hug. It was so nice to see that there are still genuinely kind people in the world that go above and beyond to make someone feel extra special. If you're reading this review, Lilia, I just want you to know that you made my day, and really touched my heart with your kindness. May God bless you abundantly and look upon you with His favor always!

Adorable little cafe/patisserie and a sweet little retreat from the everyday grind. Some friends of mine and I met here and I definitely could have just relaxed here all day long. The decor was so personal and heartfelt. Also, the people working there were so sweet and helpful! I started out with a wonderful Tahitian Vanilla latte but eventually had to try one of the gigantic homemade cinnamon rolls! Delicious and so big we could have definitely shared it but we didn't. Lol. All of the pastries looked amazing and the lunch menu looked fabulous! Unfortunately, I had to leave before lunch but I will definitely be back to try some of those!

I loved coming to this place to study during the day. Since there isn't a ton of residence downtown, especially not other students, it wasn't hard to find a table. Also if you are going to be there a while, you can purchase a whole pot of tea. Nice, quiet place for students looking to try something new.

Ginormous cinnamon rolls! They look like a big bear's paw! I liked my proscuitto and cheese croissant way better than the roll. The coffees were good--we got cappuccino. The place looks and smells great, and has really awesome service. They also give you real plates and forks. Wish they had a bigger menu though, at least for breakfast.

Whenever you can catch this place open stop on by! (We called ahead to make sure.) This places smells good enough to eat!! The menu is small, the interior is quaint, and the sandwiches are delectable. Strands has a lunch menu consisting of sandwiches paired with quinoa, spinach salad, or chips. Good luck making it past the confectionery case to place your order.....saying 'No' to any thing in that case is hard to do. Today was my first visit and four coworkers accompanied me. I ordered the chicken salad on seeded bread with pecan quinoa and it was delicious. I love it! Others ordered the Frittata Du Jour- omelet on a warm cheese scone, Roasted Rosemary Turkey Sandwich with chutney --it had the perfect combination of seasonings and rosemary (not overpowering). Jeff will order it again! Christmas decorations were displayed about and light Christmas music filled the room. There are small gifts for sale such as soaps, ornaments, plates, etc. After we dined, we each made our way back to the confection case to order cookies, cinnamon rolls, peppermint mochas, soy milk latte, and egg nog lattes. We couldn't resist. Check out my photos for a visual of all these yummy things. "See y'all tomorrow!" is what I belted out as we were leaving and then begging Jeff to take me again! I will try the roasted chicken! Nom Nom Nom Nowwwwwwwwwwwwwuh for the bad: 1. they are rarely open --we walked there three times and they were closed. 2. they are slow 2. they got the drink order wrong...UNsweet tea please 3. no sweet n low 4. they are slow 5. my cinnamon roll is now my paper weight 225batonrouge.com/112120… Oh they did!?

Adorable place with nice staff and creative pastries. Strong coffee too :) I have to come back for their Kahlua Fudge Latte

"Cool cafe & pâtisserie in downtown Baton Rouge area." A secret garden of deliciousness lies in this very cafe, so you must check it out! For months, I have seen the gorgeous creations that have come out of this very charming cafe. It was love at first sight for me, as soon as I walked in last Friday. Have you ever been to a place and was so entranced by it that you never wanted to leave? Well, that was how I felt about that place. Literally, I stayed until they closed! The interior felt like it was designed with so much TLC. Set in a historical building, the design definitely brought the historical personality back to the space. Oh the food... magnificent! The pastries are voluptuous and so full of life! I wish I had a soccer ball with me, so I could set it next to their cinnamon pastries; they are enormous! Loved the hand-made and decorated candies. My lunch was bursting with flavor - Bacon Bourbon Chicken Salad (strawberries on salad too). After meeting co-owner and chef, Lilita, I was able to connect the dots on why their logo background is of a pineapple. Can you take a guess why? Lilita was a gem to meet and speak with; such a kind-hearted spirit and one of the truest passions for the culinary arts! I will be back over and over and over again and you know what? You should to! COOL TIP: Free refills on coffee, when you dine in-house.

Second time I ate here---lunch each time and ordered a delightful and much crab meat crab cake sandwich. Do not recall the bread for the crab cake last time but today it was a croissant and I tell you what, the croissant bread is enough of an incentive to return. The restaurant smells good , has art for sale and is set up in such a way that you feel relaxed inside---definitely positive ambiance. Oh yeah pastries and desserts are available in case you want that after lunch or if you drop by mid morning or mid afternoon. And for the downtown worker, on a chamber of commerce day like today, it was great to walk there and back to the office

Charming little place, located downtown by the River. I suggested coming here after seeing the great Yelp rating. Limited menu ranging from salads, sandwiches, coffees and desserts. I was craving a turkey sandwich but unfortunately they were already sold out. I opted for the sausage egg and chz frittata with sweet potatoe chips. My friend decided on the crabcake sandwich and a salad topped with fruit. When our food came out, my frittata was huge (almost too huge for my small mouth to handle) and tasty but the chips were stale tasting. My friends crabcake on the other hand, was only wheat bread-a few pieces of spinach-and a small crab cake....what no sauce?!?! She stated she didn't like it so I suggested we just switch. I thought the crabcake had good flavor but overall it was too dry, I recommend adding a creole or remoulade sauce. Oh, and the mixed berry salad we ordered, ended up only being a side of fruit with no "salad." Again, the place is cute and low key and maybe their coffees are delicious but me or my friend won't be back.

Attention to detail with coffee and pastries. Beautiful presentation and friendly customer service!

Great place. You really are treated like family. Had a delicious pulled pork on a bed of spinach.

This is the best place I have been to in Baton Rouge. Their coffee, pastries and service are impeccable and lucky for me, it is situated right across from the hotel I stay in for work! I have yet to have lunch here yet, but I can only imagine its awesome. This coffee shop is so, so cute and worth the wait to get your coffee and breakfast in the morning. Will continue one of my go-to spots!

Coffee, a pour over, was the only thing on my agenda at Strands when I arrived this day b/c I'd given up bread for the Lenten season. The pastries looked amazing and very tempting. 1st problem, no pour overs at Strands. I should've retreated upon finding out this unfortunate news. 2nd problem, I asked for a cappuccino and it was made faster than I could wash my hands in the bathroom and too hot to sip.. I'll give Strands another chance, really wanna try their food.. Coffee and care of coffee need work.

This cafe is great but it would have been excellent if the store didn't charge as much as 8-9 dollars for a sandwich and a side. The building itself is very nice and is located near the "Visit BR" HQ. I went here for lunch during the early lunch hours, a little after 11 AM so I didn't really have to wait. Now for the food... My friend and I ordered the chicken salad sandwich (each sandwich comes with a side; I chose quinoa and my friend went for the sweet potato chips). You can't go wrong with whichever side you pick. The portions of chicken salad in the sandwich were quite generous but the sliced bread used in the sandwich was the standard size you would find in a store. I was expecting it to be bigger since the lunch cost altogether over 17 dollars. (This wasn't even including drinks). The bread was special though. Instead of the normal options such as wheat or white, the bread they bake has poppy seeds and other ingredients that make it taste great. If you do have the appetite to eat desert, try their plum tart!

Quaint and enjoyable. Not really a place I would go just for coffee, but their pastries are outstanding. A great place to nosh on buttery goodness and chat.

Great little shop. Tea with honey is done just right and the lime scone is really good. Friendly staff, an exposed brick wall and dark stained furniture make this place very comfortable to stay for an afternoon. It's very laid back. Charming little place.

A place with enough appeal to take your snobby aunt or hipster nephew and everyone in between, which pretty much represents a typical patron mix. Nice people serving good products. If you are on the north side of downtown, worth a stop. We will be back.

Had one of the best breakfasts here on a business trip. This place has great charm and for a moment I thought I was back in Cali! The iced tea was just right and my cheese scone with egg and sausage ! The owner actually came over and sat with me and told me about her family. The meal was awesome and the ambiance was even better !

This cafe is a must-visit! On my first trip to Baton Rouge this weekend, this was definitely a highlight. It is a small, family-owned business, and they are friendly, courteous and helpful. The decor is lovely--lots of small tables and beautiful photos on the walls. The food is excellent! I had a Devonshire tea service-- two scones, lemon curd, clotted cream, and a beautiful little tray with a teapot, cream pitcher and sugar cubes with tongs. My friends had coffee, truffles, cinnamon roll and waffle. The waffle especially was wonderful: crispy and sweet. I would love to return to Strands for one of their special full teas, as I've seen pictures from my friends who have been. Very recommended!

Most awesome strawberry cheesecake croissant I've ever had, and the spiced caramel apple cider was great! Beautiful tucked away and quaint location. Highly recommend to anyone staying downtown. The cafe is right next to the river and river walk as well.

I was hoping to make my time in Baton Rouge a working vacation, and my hostesses suggested this cafe since it was within walking distance of their place in Spanish Town. I wish I could put this place in my pocket, so I could bring it everywhere I go. It's a beautiful space, with exposed brick, a mix of high-top and regular tables, shelves with delft plates (those blue-and-white Dutch-style plates), framed photos and a chiming grandfather clock. All the employees are extremely welcoming and friendly, and more than happy to tell you what each pastry and chocolate is in the display cases. My chocolate croissant came out warm and flaky with a chocolate center and chocolate drizzled on top-- everything I'd want in a chocolate croissant. My vanilla latte was also delicious, but the croissant was the star of the two-item show. The handmade chocolates were tempting, as were other pastries in the case, but I didn't want to go into sugar overload. The internet's a bit finicky since they share it with their next door neighbor, but it wasn't essential for the work I was doing. Please come back home with me, Strands, so I may have your delightful pastries all the time! Or at least set up a satellite location in the Northeast? Think about it, okay?

Wow! When you don't really like wedding cake and are looking for a fantastic way to celebrate your wedding event- go to Strands! They topped off our wedding dessert table with a delicious gourmet fruit tart for us to cut with mini tarts for all our guests. So many of the guests told us how much they enjoyed this approach to that special moment of the wedding ..."They're going to cut the tart!!". Thank you Strands.

Great coffee and service!!! Atmosphere is awesome also. It's great to have a place like this in downtown Baton Rouge. This is a must visit if you are in downtown Baton Rouge. Plus, they are open on Saturdays! Their "official" site is under construction; however, they have a great Facebook page: facebook.com/pages/Stran… Enjoy, Will twitter.com/wsellers

Delicious. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with warm smiles and hellos and the food, oh the smells of the food! Warm, fresh croissants and delicious coffee. Next time I'm in Baton Rouge, I know where I'm going for breakfast!

Lovely. A treasure in a somewhat desolate downtown Baton Rouge. we had tea and dessert, not lunch but were sorry we discovered it only after we had lunch elsewhere. Dessert selections were limited but delectable and not the usual-prepared by the Australian trained pastry chef. Her handmade chocolates were fabulous.

OMG truly as good as it gets, and I have been to a lot of coffee shops. this place has the most amazing, dare I say, luscious treats! The chocolates are hand made. The coffee is wonderful. The atmosphere charming. Try one of each goodie! All the croissants are good

Very friendly folks running a patisserie in a rehabbed classic building. Decor references Hawaii (one of the gals is from Honolulu) and local history. The blueberry tart with vanilla custard I tried seemed a little heavy, but the ambiance encouraged me to plan a return trip for another something-something. Rumor has it they are trained in pastry making but downplay their professional cooking education. Tres modest.

All I can say is this place is not to be missed. I have had the pleasure of visiting some great pastry and chocolate shops around the country and I'm always amazed that we have such a stellar establishment here in Baton Rouge. From the handmade chocolate to the delicious pastry and oh did I mention they have Cuban coffee, this is one of my very favorite places to indulge myself. Every chocolate is delicious and the pastries are fresh and offer something new each time I visit. But the food isn't the only reason to visit, the staff are awesome, they are gracious and inviting. Do yourself a favor and try it yourself, you won't be disappointe

This place is so cute, clean, and fun! The staff is very personable. It was my first time in and each person took the time to explain to me not only what was on the menu, but also went through each chocolate and each pastry with me. I ended up ordering the quiche, which comes with some HUGE fresh green and red grapes! It was very delicious. Next, I tried an assortment of chocolates. Each was delectible and melted in your mouth. As I waited for my order, the staff thanked me for coming in, explained to me when my order would be available, and asked that I please return when I had more time to sit and enjoy. The vibe is similar to a New Orleans cafe, but has a Parisian influence to it. It is very clean, quiet, and friendly. This is a little gem downtown that you shouldn't miss out on!

I cannot express in words how much I love Strand's and their staff. The deserts are amazing, the service is over the top, and I would literally love to be there all day long. Great coffee, great atmosphere, great everything!

I absolutely adore this place. Family owned and operated and a very talented family at that. Outrageously amazing handcrafted chocolates that beg to be devoured but you savor them just so they hang around a bit longer. Pair it with their perfect coffee and you can officially start your day (don't judge me that I start my day with a chocolate...it's their fault). My personal favorite is the chili powdered covered truffle...spicy and chocolaty heaven. The service is like something out of a dream. This is possibly the nicest family to ever exist. They genuinely care about their customers and remember the smallest detail of your last order or conversation. You just do not see this anymore and it keeps me coming back even though I have a coffee pot about 15 ft from me in my office. The only reason I neglect to give them 5 stars is because they have very spotty hours of operation. They often close for days on end for holidays or even staff birthdays...which makes me wish I worked there but it is a bit of a let down when you work yourself up for a latte only to see the blinds drawn and a sign saying they'll be back in 2 days. I still strongly recommend them- but I'd call first to make sure they are open...if they are....make sure you treat yourself to one of their lovely confections.

Excellent little coffee/pastry shop. First rate attention to detail from the decor, to the flavors, to the presentation. A real find. Pastries all made in the shop and as good as you will find anywhere. Both sweet and savory items on offer. The provolone and pancetta croissant is very nicely done.
