I'm honestly not even sure how to begin. This is my FAVORITE restaurant of all time. After eating at some of the best restaurants across the globe, this continues to top the list. From the food, to service, to atmosphere, I cannot even begin to explain how wonderful this place truly is. My parents have been coming here since they were married over 25 years ago. My dad would pick up food on his way home from a late night at the hospital. Every time my mom would wake up to sneak in a bite of the wonderful food. Very little has changed since then except for the addition of a few special here and there. I'm going to take this review just to recommend a few of my absolute favorites. Appetizers: A light and wonderful appetizer is that consists of two high-quality pieces of mozzarella. One is topped with marinated eggplant and the other marinated red bell peppers. It may sound like nothing special, but in fact is a great melody of flavors perfectly marinated with the right spices and a great light start to any meal. Fresh cracked black pepper is a great addition. A more hearty and rich appetizer is their tortellini. Though the one in their tomato sauce is good, I recommend the alfredo sauce. Even the appetizer portion can certainly be made into a meal depending on how hungry you are. They are great homemade tortellini stuffed with prociutto and cheeses, cooked al-dente, tossed in a wonderful alfredo sauce. On a similar note the crabmeat alfredo is absolute SUPERB! The crabmeat is always fresh. It may seem pricey, but both the quality and quantity of crab meat within the great dish is definitely worth the money. I recommend an order of their Lawrence Bread with any appetizer or meal. It is a great version of garlic bread made with fresh garlic, butter, olive oil, and spice on a french bread roll. You can get two pieces for a couple bucks and it's definitely worth the extra. As for dinner: The lamb chops (always a special and not listed on the menu) are the best I have ever had. They are marinated in garlic and rosemary and perfectly cooked to your specification (I recommend medium rare). A great pairing for pasta is either the normal red sauce with bow-tie if you want to take some leftovers home or even the pesto or cream sauce. If your in the mood for seafood, their grill options are AMAZING. I've taken to getting the grilled tuna marinated in rosemary, garlic, and olive oil cooked to absolute perfection! (I recommend ordering it "between rare and medium rare"- there's nothing worse than overcooked tuna). It comes with the same pasta options on the side and for the grill options you can choose to have just one type of seafood or two. If you're in the mood to mix it up, I definitely recommend the shrimp and tuna combo both in the same marinade. They use fresh Louisiana shrimp that have a wonderful sweet flavor and wonderfully grilled. If you're in the mood for something leaning towards a red sauce, the eggplant or veal (or there is a mix of the two) is excellent! The flavors mix perfectly together to create a heavenly sauce. Arancini is a great unique dish. It is a giant meatball covered in rice and fried, then topped with a tomato sauce. You can get a side of pasta to go with it, but it is certainly not needed. They also have a seafood arancini which is too superb. For a meal, I don't recommend sticking to the "normal." I find most are slightly disappointed by lasagna or meatballs and spaghetti. On the other hand, the pizza certainly tops of the list of best pizzas. Mama, who owns and runs the restaurant, is the only one who will make pizza. If she is not there sitting in rocking chair observing the kitchen and cooking or they are too busy, pizzas can't be ordered, but when you get one, it's truly a wonderful treasure. Around the world is my favorite with the perfect balance of sauce, cheese, olives, peppers, italian sausage, pepperoni, artichoke, and tomato on a delightfully light and crunchy crust like no other I have ever had. Desert: It is too is wonderful. The torfutti (I always get the name wrong) is a great chocolate cake with white chocolate and dark chocolate moose, a strong chocolate cake between the layers. It is covered in a chocolate ganache and mini chocolate chips. Great when paired with a single or double espresso! They have amazing canollis as well. The shell is always perfectly crunchy and the cream is the perfect texture and sweetness, covered in pieces of almond and a cherry on each side topped with powdered sugar on a bed of home-made whipped cream. These are definitely my top two! Though it may seem a bit pricey, you truly get a GREAT deal. It would most likely cost you more to create the same product in your home. This is a wonderful place for dates for couples, but not wonderful for big groups unless you talk to them ahead of time. Your date will be VERY impressed if you take her here with great food, and a great wine selection and bar.

The location of this restaurant always makes me forget about it during the "where are we going to eat" debate, but when I do remember I'm always impressed...and think why don't I eat here more often. I must confess I usually order the veal piccata as it's my favorite dish. But I have been swayed by a special here and there...hello, osso buco!! The Lawrence bread is a delicious, buttery and herb covered carb heaven. As for the piccata, where do I start?? They always ask if you want capers...and why wouldn't I? Then I ususally ask for extra :o) The wine prices can be a little on the high side but nothing too crazy. The parking is terrible but well worth it for the old school italian restaurant feel....and food!

Good service, pretty good food, VERY dimly lit. We had a large party and I was super early so I sat at the bar for a few minutes and got a glass of wine. Bartender was not very engaging and it was too dark to read the book I brought, I ended up using my phone flashlight, which was inconvenient. Dinner service provided by Rick was great, he kept up with our crazy random ordering and made sure we were taken care of. Waters were refilled, food came out at the same time, and everyone enjoyed the company. Being an old-school Italian place, any options for gluten free are pretty much chicken or steak with pasta on the side. I got the lemon-garlic chicken which was delicious (and swimming in the butter sauce, yummy!!). Everyone else had pasta or arancine. The table shared an appetizer of their Laurence Bread (cheese/garlic bread) and fried calamari, which I hear was good. Our table split a couple bottles of a Montepulciano, while others had a Frank Family Chardonnay. For dessert we had a birthday cake brought in because we were celebrating a 93rd birthday (!!!) I think the service was excellent, the food is okay, but the atmosphere (dark, old, not very warm feeling) really brings down the experience for me. Maybe warm lighting would help the ambience instead of what they've got now.

Sadly, everything about this restaurant was very mediocre. The saumon was grilled till dry. The yellowfin tuna very very chewy. The carbonara ravioli sauce was very average and the italian salad sported no dressing at all. And the eggplant parmegiano, while made with great ingrediences, was heavely covered in marinara sauce and mozarella, which made the parmegiano crust soggy and doughy. The only great thing was the fantastic marinara sauce. I'd sadly have prefered to just eat a bowl of marinara spaghetti here.

4.5 stars. The prices raise expectations and lower some folks' reviews, but when it comes to quality and consistency, it may be Baton Rouge's most reliable performer, and worth the $$$. For a long time, it was my one and only 'go to' place if I wanted to make sure my party were pleased and well fed .. and well, I guess it still is. A whole lot on the menu, but they do it all well .. Italian is the speciality but a place to get a good steak but with plenty of non-steakhouse items making up the bulk of the menu. Good bar. One of the best things about Gino's is that it has evolved and matured over the years as B.R. diners' palates and preferences have become more refined. This is a place where you are almost sure to encounter some or another local celebrity or muckety-muck, but not a gathering place for the fancy pants crowd. If your table gets one of the veteran waiters, your experience should be top notch.

Totally average. Too expensive for the quality but the tiramisu made me happy. It wasn't even good tiramisu but tiramisu always makes me happy. And whipped cream from a can should never be used.

First look from the parking lot - not a parking spot to be had - must be good, me thinks! WRONG - WRONG - WRONG Receptionist asks us if we will be done in within an hour because she has a reservation coming in - - RUDE Ok, we'll hold out and wait for the food. Everyone said it is the best Italian Restaurant in town - I would take Denny's Italian food over this - the GRAND SLAM SPEGGETTI - The sauce was underwhelming - no flavor The pasta was tough - Seafood was bland - On the plus side the wait / bus staff was attentive and did a great job. If your looking for a great Italian meal - save your money - do not go here.

Food was good- portions were way too small for the price you are paying. Also instead of rolls and butter on the table you get saltine crackers and captain wafer salad crackers on the table and butter lol. Sorry but if I'm paying $23.00 a plate for my food, it better be coming with some rolls. Alfredo pasta was good :)

I have never been to Italy but I'm sure this is as close as it gets. I believe this is the best Italian restaurant in BR. Be sure to get their calamari appetizer and their fried eggplant; those were my favorites. The service was also excellent and my glass was never left unfilled. The entrees range anywhere from 15-20+ dollars so it was a little expensive but worth it. I will definitely be coming back. Bon appétit!

What's all the fuss about? The food is pretty good, but I just don't get why everyone RAVES about this place. It doesn't stand out in contrast to the other Italian places in town. Staff is very nice and atmosphere is nice for a date, though.

Gino's is another one of those places- everybody loves it, so what else is there to say? Maybe I tell you why I love it and what I think makes this place special. Italian- dark space- candle lit with a good bar and a live piano. A wine list that makes you want to drink in the dark and listen to the piano- it is evocative of and era past and is so lovely you are glad it exists. The marinara is super special. Is a middle ground between Diguilio brothers (which I LOVE) and the sweet sweet Monjuni's (which I dis-love. While not currently a word- it is stronger than dis-like and not so ugly as hate). Here the middle works. They menu has many lovely things- most of which I cannot get because I want to crawl into a tub of their marinara. Here it is worth getting just spaghetti and sauce, chicken parm and sauce, lasagna- ya'know... with the sauce. The cheese bread- which is not called that - is to die for. I am so glad my sweet friend had a birthday and suggested this for her special lunch. We happened to be close and it was such a bright spot to such a long week. Bottom line: With so many great restaurants, Gino's is an institution that has stood the test of time for good reason.

The story of how I ended up eating at this place is just too long to write here... I was surprised to find such an awesome Italian joint in Baton Rouge. I tried the seafood lasagna, the buffalo mozzarella, tortellini carbonara, and their amazing bread. If you ever find yourself near this place, try it out. It was on point!

This place is absolutely amazing. I come here every other year as part of my trip to see my beloved MSU Bulldogs take on LSU in Baton Rouge. No matter the outcome of the game (finally a win this year!), Gino's never disappoints. Our service was terrific - especially considering it was a large group. The staff is super friendly. The most important part is the food. Fantastic. I had Veal Parmesan and was thoroughly impressed with the tenderness of the meat. Side of pasta with delicious marinara to boot. They have this stupid good bread that you absolutely have to get. The menu is chock full of things I want to try. Can't wait to see them again!

Gino's is a great Italian restaurant in the traditional sense. It is family owned with dishes prepared from family recipes. The service is attentive and perfect. The ambiance is quiet, personal, and homey -- creating the atmosphere that the entire restaurant is focused on you and your meal. The setting is romantic but also appropriate for a dinner with friends or for business. The menu is varied with a large assortment of appetizers, salads, traditional and specialty Italian dishes, seafood, steak and lamb. Some recommendations: Get the arancini as an appetizer. You can choose the traditional which is meat, rice, and parmesan cheese covered in a red sauce (my favorite) or the crawfish or seafood which is covered in a pink sauce (mix of red and alfredo). They have an assortment of salads with two basic salads: Gino's Italian Salad which has iceberg lettuce, grape tomatoes, anchovies and a light house vinaigrette or the Mama's Salad that has a mix of greens, carrots, red onions, capers and a balsamic vinaigrette. You can't go wrong with either. All of the Italian dishes are wonderful and you'll be satisfied with any choice, but feel free to venture out and get a seafood dish or softshell crab. Very delicious and always served with a pasta and red sauce. Gino's also has a full bar, great selection of domestic and Italian beers, and extensive wine list.

This is one of Baton Rouge's great restaurants. I remember first going here for Prom in the 90's, and ordering yes, pizza. And I've had many a nice birthday dinner here, special occasion dinner, business dinner..... you get the picture. It's a small place, so make reservations if you can, most weekend nights they are completely booked. The food is great. I get different things every time and have never been disappointed. The portions are appropriate for a nice meal, you don't leave feeling like you overate. Everything is made fresh and it shows. I'm hungry just thinking about it.

I had heard a lot about this place, as my family had been several times and have ranted and raved about it. I must say, you cannot judge a book, or in this case a restaurant, by its cover. The outside is old and dated, and I didn't think this would translate to a good interior. A restaurant to me is an experience, not just a place to eat. But walking inside, I was amazed. Very nice; lights dim; quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Initial thoughts are that it would be great for a date or a business dinner. I've ordered the spaghetti and meatballs. First up is the salad. I preface this by saying I'm not much of a salad enthusiast. If it is a good salad, I will nibble at it; never finish it. My family loves the salad; I was not a fan of the taste. But by no means does it mean it was bad. I just didn't love it. Spaghetti and meatballs is orgasmic. Tried my parents' lasagna and it was great too. I don't overreact when it comes to food; I tend to be very critical, but this is the best Italian I've ever had and I eat a lot of Italian. Highly recommend.

To simply call Gino's a "Baton Rouge Institution" is a bit of an understatement as it has been (for many) the benchmark of Italian dining in the area since the early 70's. In fact, I think I will go out on a limb and say that it just may be the best traditional Italian in the great state of Louisiana. Yes, it is classic Sicilian style food. Red sauce (very tasty red sauce) abounds- but not to worry - there are also a number of grilled item (especially seafood). The house special is the Arnicini (sort of like a softball sized meatball that has been stuffed cheese and other good things, coated with slightly crunch rice and covered in that delicious red sauce). It's available as either an appetizer or an entree and it's a MUST TRY item. As far as other entrees go the veal picate consisted of practically melt in your mouth slices of veal in a quite tangy lemon butter and caper sauce. To make it even better it's served with a bowl of pasta that's been tossed with the same sauce. The eggplant parmigiana was an excellent rendering of the classic dish - the eggplant was perfectly fried and not at all soggy (an all to common issue with this dish). It's all good! The restaurant itself is defiantly old school romantic Italian. Although it's considered a "casual" Restaurant it is somewhat "dressy". Do yourself a favor dress up a little - you will enjoy the evening even more! A quick word about pricing and wine - the prices are quite reasonable with most entrees in the $20 range. There is a very good "by the glass" wine list (most about $9 a glass) but the actual wine list can be a bit pricey (there are very few selections under $100). However the only complaint that I have is that the initial bottle that I selected was sold out - oh well, that happens. Bottom line: It's an offer you can't refuse.

Wow. First night in BR and they take me to Gino's. we started with the Arrancino (sp). It was awesome. Thought the bread was just ok, not worth paying for. My entre was incredible. Wine list is a real gem. Found a wine on there that is impossible to find but sadly we got the last bottle. Going back soon.

  • MC B.

From the street, it is easy to overlook this gem. Don't let the lack of curb appeal fool you! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the food was really good and the wait staff was the appropriate amount of attentive and distant. Tip #1- Make a reservation. The people directly in front of us were sans reservation- wait time 1 hour. There were other parties waiting on a table. And while we were a few minutes late for our reservation, the hostess showed us directly to our table as if we were celebrities. You can reserve certain tables in the restaurant. I didn't know that prior, but I liked our location regardless. The bar area of the restaurant had live music, but we couldn't hear it from where we were. Our two top was tucked away in the back of the restaurant and while the other tables were close and there was plenty of restaurant noises, it still had an intimate feel to it. The restaurant itself is rather dimly lit, so the table top candle on white linens made for a nice touch. Tip #2 I wouldn't bring a party of more than 6 here, it isn't conducive for a big group. You don't really want to be "that" group of boisterous friends at a quiet restaurant. Food wise- I snagged the Shrimp Champagne, which was terrific, and my date had the lasagna. I was a bit surprised there was no pre-salad or bread brought to the the table at all, but it was still a great meal.

  • Kathleen W.

I went here for the first time last night looking for a good date night spot and was not at all disappointed. Agree with other reviewers in that it is VERY unassuming from the street, but the inside is very nice and a "traditional italian" atmosphere. It was a little loud, but nothing that would make me not want to return. Our waiter was fabulous and took extensive time and care to help us select a bottle of wine to order, was not pushy about the super expensive options and really tried to help us find what we liked by bringing us a couple samples to try before we ordered. As a server myself, I really notice and appreciate a server going above and beyond for their guests. That guy gets 5 stars. My food was wonderful, the white cream sauce on my Tortellini Carbonara was decadent and delicious. My partner's food I did not like as much, but she did. She had ordered the Chicken Parmigiana The marinara tasted just a little funny to me. Also ordered the Minestrone soup as a starter, which was not the best I've ever had, but it was good. Overall, I will definitely be coming back - mainly because of the great service we received!

A bit overrated and pricey. Charged $2 extra b/c I just wanted sauce and no meatballs. Frankly I've had.better sauce at Carrabas. $25 for spaghetti and one glass of wine. Never again.

This restaurant is all about the money!!! We had brought guests to have dinner tonight. It was storming outside and our guest had used his umbrella to usher guests into the restaurant. Gino had come out and we mentioned to the hostess, someone should be out front helping get people in due to the rain. She just sneered at the suggestion. My husband had to ask for towels to dry our friend's clothes. I had called ahead and made reservations. We had not finished our salads and the main entrees were brought to the table. So at the point we seemed to be rushed. The waiter had mentioned it was a slow night in the restaurant. After finishing our entrees, we order coffee and desserts. The check was dropped off at the same time. Next thing we know the hostess comes to our table and asked us if we could finish up within 20 minutes, they had this table reserved then!!! There were other tables empty in the restaurant. We were so embarrassed that we had invited guests that we were still visiting at this time. As we left the restaurant my husband asked Gino if there was a time limit on the tables. He answered "No" The hostess seems to be stumbling to explain her actions. Gino at no time ever cared to ask who we were or offer an apology. We have been coming into this restaurant for years but i assure you we will never return again, nor will our friends!!

I had fond memories of this place from high school (over a decade ago), so when I was in town I took my girlfriend here for what I thought would be a nice dinner. Wrong. The first sign of trouble was the overweight black male cook who insisted on staring at us as we waited to be seated. Yes, we are lesbians, yes more astute observers would be able to tell, but we are both professionals and, as such, we dress and act very conservatively. We're not exactly the type to make out in front of Chic-fil-a and I don't appreciate the creepy stares. On to the food- we ordered chicken dishes and both left feeling hungry, as we left over half the entree on the plate. This was due to the copious amounts of fat running through the chicken breast-- extremely low quality. The service could best be described as apathetic. I left hungry, disappointed, $70 poorer, and mourning the loss of a once-great Italian restaurant. Never again.

I now live in Dallas and we don't have a traditional Italian place like Ginos. Miss their arancini. French-fare/stuffy foodies might skip this place. But it's about as good as it gets for real Italian gusto minus the fuss. It's real, it's nothing fancy, but it's just darn good. Really.

Gino's is wonderful! Have the Arencini to start.......it's a large fried meatball with rice & sauce.....but don't get the seafood one; the meat one is better! Pizza is good also. Nice place.

This saddens me because Ginos has been one of my favorites for many years...the place has gone down hill so far I won't be back. The food was not the same it was bad, cold, just not good. The decor is outdated and dusty and dirty. I am very sad about my last visit to Ginos.

A great date restaurant in Baton Rouge, which is a college town and thus, hard to find a place where grown ups can have dinner and cocktails in a pleasant environ. Great Italian food, great service, small and cozy atmosphere. If you ever find yourself in the BR, be sure you get some legit cajun and seafood first (note I said "and" as cajun and seafood are not mutually inclusive) but then head over to Gino's and get your pasta on.

Impromptu dinner at Gino's reminds you why they still pack 'em in. Other than the huge and obnoxious television in the bar area that's visible from 3/4 of the restaurant, the place was just perfect tonight. Seafood arincini, mushroom ravioli, crab fettuccine, excellent martini. Big happy crowd, excellent service. Kudos.

This place is pretty yummy. I went there during a business trip and got my food to go, but the place was bustling on a Wednesday night. It seemed a bit loud, so don't go looking for a quiet, romantic place. But it seemed like a fun place to go for a night out with a group. I wanted something light, so I got the capri salad and salmon with spaghetti. The capri salad was ok, could have used more basil, but the tomatoes were awesome. The salmon was cooked perfectly and was absolutely delicious. The marinara sauce was a little too sweet for my taste, but not bad. I would definitely go back.

Overall, I will be going back when I have the opportunity to spend a bit more time and money on a meal. I went the other day with a friend. He had a hankering for some spaghetti, and he was paying so I picked a random Italian restaurant I had not tried before. We did not know walking in what sort of experience we were going to have. It was a much fancier establishment than I would have guessed. While I appreciate the atmosphere they are trying to cultivate, I guess I was a little put off by the table bussing cart that sat within a foot of my chair the entire meal. That was a little weird. The waiter also got my friend's order wrong, though that was likely a simple mistake due to my friend's heavy Thai accent. Anyway, I tried the spaghetti with meatballs. I suppose my biggest complaint about the meal was that for $12, I expect a serving that will be enough for me to get full. I enjoyed the sauce. I could taste a bit of sweet with good balance of flavors. I would suggest trying it, assuming you are either not a big eater or planning on having multiple courses. We also ordered the bread appetizer. I am not sure why, but I always find it strange when restaurants charge for bread, especially if the bread is $4. I liked the bread, except that it tasted heavily of sesame seeds (I hope that was the type of seed they used). It wasn't bread that was worth $4. There were many other things on the menu that I would like to try. I guess I just hope I don't have to sit next to the bussing cart the next time I give them a shot.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
