Wouldn't even call it Mexican food. Meal we ordered (Steak Rancheros and chicken/steak fajitas) was an insult to any fine authentic Mexican restaurant. The meat was obviously frozen just before cooking and the vegetables were greasy. To be fair, the salsa and the corn tortillas served with fajitas were okay. There were quite a number of regulars, I didn't see any of them order the steak or fajitas. So, there may be other dishes that are edible, but definitely not the copious amounts of leftovers we brought home to our dog. Try Carlos little fusion but quite well prepared and tasty, or the taqueria on Siegan Lane which is real Mexican food prepared correctly.

I don't claim to be an expert on the question of the authentic nature of Mexican or Tex-Mex food. However, what I CAN tell you is that El Rio Grande will serve you plenty of great-tasting food at a price you will love. The atmosphere, the staff, and the customers are all very welcoming, and if you don't already feel at home when you sit down, the hot, homemade food will do the trick. Forget Inferior Swill! Once you taste El Rio, you will never want their over-priced and cold food again.

Having lived in Fort Worth, Texas while attending college and making many, many trips to Mexico, I have to say that El Rio Grande has quality Mexican food. In addition to the food, the employees are the best and make it a place with a more personal touch than the big chains. You are always welcomed here by the entire staff and owners, the service is the best, and the owners treat you like family. They also welcome group meetings and parties in a room off the main dining area. Whether you are alone or with a group, you know you have come to the right place. I've been dining here since the 1970s when I first moved to Baton Rouge. It is the best of all the rest. And you don't find a better margarita, Mexican beer, or mixed drink anywhere in town, so come home to Mexican food at its finest. Quality counts!.

Absolutely top notch Mexican cuisine! As a native southern Californian I am often craving authentic Mexican food. This restaurant is going to be my new go-to place for delicious fajitas and sopapillas.

Went back for the first time in many years and it is delicious! Our group had the fried burrito, chicken quesadilla and enchiladas and it was all outstanding. Would recommend to anyone. It is small, but service is nice and friendly. Margaritas are great, and my husband says the guacamole is the best he has ever had.

Had the Beef burrito, ground beef. Just felt like red meat this time. Love chicken more but this visit had the ground beef which was seasoned, but not overly. This place has been here 50 years and still clean. I love love love old establishments that still can keep a nice appearance. Burrito had chili sauce on top. Servers were very nice. We had Grace. People have been going for years. Price is cheap. We have been 2 times in 3 days. It is pretty dang good. Parking is a breeze and in and out under 30 minutes good when you have to get back to working. Everything looks pretty tasty. Next time going to try the fajitas but can't past the burritos. Good Mexican and I don't taste the or feel ANY lard, thank goodness.

Had an early dinner here on a Friday nite, 6:30 or so. Service seemed a little slow but food was good. I had a Mexican dinner plate , taco, tamale, buritto beans and rice. Was good , nothing special. Loved the salsa ! Margarita was also very good. Will go back and give it a second try, also looks to be a good place for a weekend nite when you have to wait everywhere else for a hour or more.

Rio Grande is THE premier non-chain Mexican restaurant.... Everything is fantastic... It has been owned by one Mexican family for over 50 years and the original owner is still very commonly seen cooking there! Enchiladas Con Huevo is my ideal meal but the nachos are to die for! The Margaritas are fantastic as well! Don't try to visit on a Monday, however, as I always seem to do! They are closed :)

Service was great. Friendly and fast. Prices were good also but Mexican food it's not. I guess because I'm Mexican I expect more. Crowd is all Caucasian so I guess they cater to the locals. I was just passing by.

Now, here's a dive, a real one .. but one that does not give its patrons the feel that it's not clean or the food is all cooked in one big greasy kettle. It's by no means fine dining, and (as is the case with most ethnic restaurants) some of the standard Mex fare that diners expect to see on the menu is just pulled out of the freezer. But peruse the menu or ask the staff for something that the kitchen (is it still Joe?) takes some pride in preparing, and you will likely enjoy your meal. First ate here in the early 1980's and there have been times that I would not think about going for years, but always give it a try now and then because of my affinity for dives and local operations.

I agree, if you think that Taco Bell is better than this place... then you're the type of idiot who thinks that Taco Bell is Mexican food! It's a family-owned and operated business... a Tex/Mex family to be exact... that's been in business longer than any other Mexican restaurant in this town. They must be doing something right to be around for over 35 years. Best guacamole and cheese enchiladas in town, best beef tacos, tamales and nachos too. This a the real deal, Tex-Mex. Not California, New Mexico, etc. For what they do, they do it well. Not thrilled with the fajitas though. Regulars are treated like family... good and bad! I've been going for 30 years and it is always consistently delicious and filling, never any heartburn or upset stomach... unlike Taco Bell! And I challenge you to find a (real) Mexican working in that fast food joint here in Baton Rouge!

you know you're in the wrong mexican restaurant when not a single person in the place, customer or employee, is of mexican descent. that was the case when i walked into El Rio Grande. i should've turned around and walked back out. but i didn't. apparently, these people think all "mexican food" is a combination of four ingredients: ground beef, tortillas, canned chili, and cheese. that's all you'll get here. order tacos? you'll get store-bought taco shells stuffed with unseasoned ground beef, topped with chili and cheddar cheese. enchiladas? unseasoned ground beef rolled up in a flour tortilla, topped with chili and cheese. burrito? ground beef, cheese, and chili rolled up in a large flour tortilla. et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. did i mention i only went here on somebody else's suggestion? i'll have to have some words with them. this place is a JOKE. you're better off going to taco bell.

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
