I wanted to support a local restaurant on Veteran's Day and was pleased with the great service and delicious food. I had the cream of shrimp soup and stuffed burgers. Yum!! The owner stopped by the table and chatted with us. I love when they do that. You don't come across kindness like that much anymore. I will definitely come again!! The chocolate cake was to die for! !! All the food was made from scratch. A must eat for sure! !!

This is THE place to go when visiting Alexandria. I grew up in LA and every time we visit we have to stop by The Cottage. The red beans and rice with sausage is to die for and of course the shrimp bisque and spinach salad. I have not had anything else there because that meal is my favorite. Yes, the decor is a bit dated, but I am glad they put their hearts into the food because it is what we go there for! Thanks!!

I had the shrimp and avocado salad and it's always perfectly dressed & so fresh! You must try the shrimp soup as well. Probably my favorite place for a great lunch every time . And do not forget about dessert. I suggest the crepe :)

Perfection!

The food is over priced. The actual restaurant looks like it came out of the early 70's. Atmosphere is terrible. If you go here do not expect quality food. It's very average.

Upon walking into The Cottage, you can tell this is a regular meeting place for locals. The atmosphere is that of a basic diner that hasn't been updated - ever. It feels like a clean greasy spoon. As everyone has commented, make sure to get at least a demitasse cup of the cream of shrimp soup. It's great and the other menu offerings are good too. It's not a fine dining experience by any means but the food is always consistent, quick and delicious. I've had the chicken salad plate and stuffed snapper - both very good. My lunch companions also raved about the shrimp and avocado salad. It's funny to be in Alexandria (especially this place) and learn that they do not serve sweet tea, however, they offer almond tea, which is a little sweet. They also have "half desserts"...in case you need a small sweet treat and not a full size serving. Overall, the food is good and you can get in and out if needed. The menus glued to the tablecloth and the fake flowers in vases make me laugh....It's as though Marie Baronne (from Everybody Loves Raymond) designed the place. I like to think of this as an old people cafeteria as the lunch plates typically include a small piece of sweet cornbread, which is wonderful and crumbly and a small serving of fruit cocktail...like the kind you may have eaten in school. Go for the cream of shrimp soup and some dessert!

Splendid lunch! Spectacular wraps, spinach salad and an incredible tomato pie, memorable deserts bread pudding warm & delicious and strawberry crepe Yummy. Don't miss this place! Wonderful staff, Lisa took care of us, Neil is their fantastic Chef and the manager is Linda. All were just so nice to us, great food made our visit an experience to remember. Try it, you'll like, I promise!

A gem for Alexandria. My favorite spot for lunch. The shrimp bisque is to die for. The best corn bread i've had in LA so far. Perfectly sweet & salty and moist. Salad's are good.

I like this place, have liked it ever since I moved here. It is a locals place, with a set menu and daily specials. I like that the staff knows all the locals and will give you your favorite table if it is available. I have eaten a many meal here. I like the chicken plate as well as the shrimp soup and the spinach salad. Love the desserts. I like most everything they serve.

Hot chicken on a croissant with a side spinach salad. Don't forget that strawberry crepe. The Cottage is a lovely little lunch spot. It's small, hometown atmosphere makes it feel like you are having lunch with the fam! I forgot to mention the almond tea...delicious!!!

The service is wonderful. Very kind and they can get you in and out quickly. I love the shrimp bisque it's what pulls me in every time. And the shrimp avocado salad amazing!! I've been eating here for years. Only down fall is the hours of operation. Oh and don't for get the almond tea so refreshing!! I highly recommend to all.

They are absolutely my favorite place for lunch! Their shrimp soup is a secret recipe and I understand why! I don't even eat shrimp and it's worth buying for anyone. You can even ask them for shrimp soup with no shrimp. It's amazing and I would eat there everyday if possible

the creamy shrimp soup is the thing to order - everyone at my table had at least a cup of it. it is not thick like chowder, it's a broth base with lots of cream. there's nothing in the soup except the cream broth and shrimp, and yet it's still so amazing. creamy with just enough spice to cut through the richness. it's served with cornbread that's slathered in melted butter. my sister had the tomato basil pie and that was unique and tasty. it's a savory pie with lots of cheese. the flavors were like a margarita pizza. it was delicious, but doesn't approach the flavors of the creamy shrimp soup.

If there are ladies who lunch in Alexandria, I think this is where they would go. It's larger on the inside than you would expect from the parking lot, and it is clean and feminine (not fancy feminine) on the inside. I was told the gumbo was the way to go, and it was tasty. It also came in the teeniest cup. But there was a slab of cornbread on the side, so I dug in with relish. My lunch choice was the chicken salad, which came as two scoops on a bed of lettuce with a side of onion, tomato and pickle slices, plus some canned pineapple and peach pieces. Strange sides. I cannot recommend the chicken salad because, I swear, it tasted like tuna salad. And I abhor tuna salad. I was hoping for nuts, grapes, apples, celery... something. But it was just mushed up 'chicken' in mayo. The salad also came with cornbread. So... gumbo and cornbread good. Half orders of dessert good. The rest... well, I'd try something else next time.

YES! Finally! The home-cooked goodness that I was searching for during my recent road trip. Soups were excellent (as everyone has stated). I had broccoli because I'm not a fish person. Came with cornbread that was great! And I don't even like cornbread!! For lunch we both got roll-ups (or wrap ups or something) which is like a deliciously amazing mix between an egg-roll, a taco, and a sandwich. The beef one is SO GOOD!! SO GOOD! I'm getting hungry writing this review and longing for another trip just to have these! The ham and cheese ones were very good also, but just don't compare. We had peanut butter pie and the strawberry crepe. The peanut butter pie was excellent. Service here simply CANNOT be beat! Everyone at the restaurant cares SO MUCH about your experience and about the food. I will definitely be here again, even if I have to go significantly out of my way to get here! Be advised- they are only open from 11-2!

Always looking for unique restaurants on our road trips. It is wonderful finding home style meals with the same kind of atmosphere. After arriving for a later lunch, I was walking thru the restaurant to see what the meals looked like. Everyone's plates looked like they licked them clean. Another waitress stopped and asked me if I needed anything. I was busted. The staff was so friendly! I even got a quick look at the kitchen window (where the food comes out) after stalking their customers. We had the broccoli soup and shared the humongous stuffed burger. AMAZING!

ALWAYS MAKES ME SMILE. I've been coming here for 25+ years, it seems. The owner is always onsite and she runs a tight ship. The food is yummy and the service is friendly and attentive. Its definitely part of the social circuit in Alexandria. My favorite things are: - Shrimp Bisque A++ - Crepes A++ - Grilled Chicken breast A++ (I LOVE the way they season it--it has a little tang!) - Desserts A++ Whenever I'm in Alexandria, I always eat here at least twice! Enjoy it and know you are supporting a locally owned business.

Just amazing! It was great! I see why they only are open for a few hours on the weekdays. their food is great!

Espresso Cup Sized Shrimp Soup (Demi Shrimp Bisque). Half Portion Desserts. Roasted Potatoes in Crab Boil Oil. Grilled Chicken, Stuffed Burgers, and great desserts. This is the premiere Louisiana style tea room on a restaurant scale. One of the two places I have to visit when I make it to Central Louisiana.
(5)Tracy S.
My friend and I was on our way to Baton Rouge for a seminar and used yelp and we found this place. The wait staff is great!! The food was so good. You have to get a demi of Cream of Shrimp which is so good. We had the stuff burgers which were so good. We could only eat half. We each had a half strawberry crepe which was also good. If you are passing through during lunch time you must stop here to eat!! They are only open for lunch. If we pass through again we are going to stop and enjoy a meal!!

This place is only open from 11:00-2:00 and is a local business. However, this restaurant is very clean and has great food choices. The service is also great. The food choices includes items from salads, soups, to hamburgers, fish, potatoes, steak, etc. The side is usually bread and potatoes...no fries! I had their famous Stuffed Hamburger...Amazing!! Also, the prices are cheap (you will spend around $8.00-$10.00). The inside resembles an actual cottage and has a large dining area. The Mayor likes to eat here for lunch, as well as other important people. Try not to come between 12:00 and 1:00 ... the inside will be SO PACKED that you probably won't find a table to sit. This is a nice place to have lunch with your 1 or 2 friends!! This place is located behind Krogers off Jackson Street in a small strip-mall area.

By far my favorite place to eat when I come home for a visit! Amazing gumbo, shrimp soup, spinach salad, stuffed burgers and chocolate cake!
(5)Frank A.
Ugh! I am not sure why people rave about this place. If you like sitting at card tables with plastic flowered table clothes with the menus glued behind another plastic table cloth, with nasty fake flowers all over the place and food that isn't even hot, then this is the place for you! Total hole in the wall, with NO atmosphere. Service was good, but that's all they have going. Maybe that's just how Alexandria is?

You ask anyone in Cenla and they will tell you that the best thing on the menu is the cream of shrimp soup. They serve it in 3 sizes, demis, cups and bowls. I've got to where I eat a bowl for lunch and it's plenty. Adding a little splash of tobassco or pepper makes it very nice. And the side of warm and delicious cornbread makes this little dish sensational. If you come to lunch with an appetitie, the stuffed cheeseburgers are another staple. These are so juicy and flavorful and surely will fill you up. the potatos that are served with them make this feel like a gourmet burger, which it is. The rollups are nice and the salads are wonderful. A great place to eat for lunch. Give it a try!

This restaurant used to be in a run down shopping mall but has recently moved to a brighter and more lively location. It is only open for lunch but does quite a business. This time I opted for the burger which people have raved about and also comes in a stuffed variety (cheese and bacon inside). It was a pretty good burger but certainly not the best that I have had by a long shot and it was barely above room temperature. It did come with some pretty good home fries. My girlfriend got the chicken breast with mushroom sauce and spinach which was good as usual but a smaller portion than I remember. This is a good place to grab lunch and pretty good food, especially if you are looking to avoid all of the chains.

when i'm in town, i love to eat lunch at the cottage. this place is quaint, cute, and tasty. i've had the stuffed cheeseburger (stuffed with bacon and cheese), soups, salads, grilled chicken breast, desserts, and those yummy potatoes they're known for. the food is awesome and the staff is friendly and familiar. this is probably one of my favorite parts of visiting home.
