This is a nice restaurant. I love the vidallia onion sauce on my steak. This place reminds me of an old lodge that has been turned into a restaurant. The service is good, but this place is expensive. It's where you would go for a special occassion or business meeting. I've only been for dinner and usually have a steak when I dine here. The oysters with the chipolte cream sauce are really good! You get about 5 to an order and they are a nice treat to start your dining experience. Sides are a la carte (of course) but can be shared with another dinner. There is an extensive selection of sides and sauces/toppings for your steak. They also have a good selection of grilled fish offerings and other seafood dishes. You won't be disappointed by the food. It's a nice place and can accommodate private parties...there is even enough room for a small band if you're planning a large event. The bar area is adequate with tables, couches and two big screen TVs. A stay at the Parc England Hotel and dinner at this place would be a nice weekend getaway. The golf course is also very nice.

This is very conveniently located for a dinner after arriving via airplane as it is right outside the airport property. I stopped here upon arrival to Alexandria and before my drive to Leesville since I knew there was nothing between the two cities. This was a restaurant trying it's best to be upscale. I was seated in the bar area because I was "casually" dressed. The waitstaff was very attentive (although I wouldn't expect anything less since it was a Monday evening and only 2 other occupied tables). I started off with the tempura fried green beans which were good, but the oil probably needed to be changed as it had a strong taste of seafood. For my entree I had the Jumbo Gulf Shrimp sauteed in olive oil, butter, lemon, garlic and herbs; it was basically shrimp scampi. I wish I had ordered the creamy cilantro sauce instead as I believe this would have been better. The entree came with their sensation salad (which was iceberg lettuce and a couple of croutons) w/ their house balsamic vinaigrette which was just ok and potatoes of the day. The best part of the entire meal was their potatoes of the day...amazing! For dessert I had the mini pies and they were ok. My entire meal came to $50 which is a little above average for what I expected from Alexandria.

I have eaten at the Bistro about ten times over the last six years. I really like it and would eat here more often but I live in Yuma, Az. First you need to recognize that it was not purpose built as a Bistro. The building was the officers' club when this was the England Air Force Base. That said I like the setting. The is plenty of parking. The dining tables are well spaced. The setting is linen with good china and flat wear. The servers are often you people as opposed to more mature servers. The seem to have reasonable training and the do a pretty good job. I disagree withe those who contend that the food is over priced. I don't think that it is, but that might be a generational difference. The quality of the food is consistent and good. The wine list does not have huge selection, but the quality of the choices is excellent. The noise level is not bad. There is a lot of generally unused space because the very large dance floor. This does lead to a bit of a feeling of emptiness. Overall, excellent.

I stopped in here to try something different. I sat at the bar. The ribeye steak was perfect and delicious. Everything else was desperate for help. It's 2013 and I have to order drinks from the bartender and food from a waiter? Really? I'm one of two occupied tables and it takes 45 minutes? Also, they are charging nearly $40 a plate and the place was last updated in 1991. You are a "fancy" restaurant and you have a plastic Spuds McKenzie on the wall? You have weird place mats from Marshall's? You have weird tiger paintings in broken brass frames on the walls? I'll eat the food any day, but the decor belongs at the Goodwill. I know it's Alexandria, but a little effort would be nice. This place could use a visit from one of those restaurant flippers.

Googled a good place to eat and the Bistro on the Bayou came up as number one. It really is.

I stopped in at Bistro on the Bayou after arriving at the nearby airport and was accommodated without a reservation. After mentioning that I am from California, the maitre d' shared that 'California cuisine' didn't scare him a bit and suggested that 'The French Laundry' had nothing on him. His comments gave me high expectations ... but then I saw the menu. Obviously said maitre d' was joking or isn't familiar with fine dining in any city of even a moderate size. 'Steak England' (steak topped with a Bernaise sauce), French fried onion rings, and creamed spinach aren't what good cooking is about these days. Ultimately I ordered a salad and seafood and the results were disappointing. It was edible, but it was more the quality I'd expect of a decent hotel coffee shop ... NOT that of a quality restaurant. While fine dining can be had in Louisiana (Bayona comes to mind as one of a good number of places), sadly this state is filled with eateries trying to live up to Louisiana's reputation via traditional local dishes that are often beyond the abilities of the chef. It's very tricky to offer the elements of Louisiana cuisine with skill and balance and more often than not a dish ends up being a large scale disarray of texture, flavor, and saturated fat assaulting one's system. This is what I found at Bistro on the Bayou. The Bistro needs more talent and imagination before it calls itself a 'fine' restaurant. As it is, this place is what American dining was 50 years ago, not today.

Great quality comfort food that is worthy of a Louisiana style restaurant. Unique creole style menu items that make it a true destination. Very courteous wait staff but don't be in a hurry.

This is not only Alexandria's best restaurant, but easily the best dining experience in a 100 mile radius. The Red Fish preparation is unequalled in an even greater range. The service is fantastic and sincere. If you are a business travel to the area, stay at the Parc England Boutique Hotel next door and you will have the ultimate experience.

Had dinner here one night and was really disappointed. Prices are way up there. . . . and you don't get what you pay for. Portions are small and the food is just OK. This place is trying to be something it's not. . . . a Five Star Restaurant. They are half way there as the prices are comparable to a Five Star. . . . but the food is subpar.

As another yelper said in their review, this place is trying to be a high end restaurant, but the only thing really high end about it is the prices. I was going to order the Maine Lobster over Macaroni and Cheese, but they were apparently out of lobster (strange seeing how this is Louisiana). So I ordered the deep fried catfish instead with a "Bistro Salad" to start off with. The bistro salad was simply iceberg lettuce and nothing else. For $7 at a "fancy" restaurant, I would expect the salad to have a nice mix of leafy greens, possibly some radicchio, croutons etc. But nope, it was just iceberg lettuce and dressing. So my main entree arrived and I dug in. The breading on the catfish was kind of bland. Also, I didn't realize it until later, but there was supposed to be tartar sauce on the side, but they were either out of that too, or just forgot to give it to me. Perhaps if I had some tartar sauce to liven up the dish it would have been a bit better. As a side note, the waiter that was serving me was friendly and fairly professional (even though I didn't get my tartar sauce), but there was a guy loitering in the dining area who I assume was either the owner or the manager on duty. I could hear him giving the waiter a hard time and reprimanding him within earshot; very unprofessional. If you're reading this, you should worry more about the quality of the food, and less about how your staff is performing.

Remember to put Bistro in perspective of where it is located. It is a wonderful and ambitious idea next to an equally gutsy hotel. To try and be a serious notch above anything else close by it scores well but to try and compare to major cities including even nearby Baton Rouge or New Orleans is apples to Oranges. The food was very good. Portions were right size for quality restaurant but won't make "bubba" happy if hrs looking to loosen his belt after dinner. I can say that ads I'm born and raised in the South. It was more about taste and sauces. This is Louisianna after all. It is not inexpensive but in line with a nice dinner. Reaction to the prices are from those use to eating in places that have multiple locations. This is good, local, high end dining that was refreshing to find. I would recommend it and return myself.

I never thought I could get seafood so fresh in central Louisiana. The waitress said they get pick it up from Baton Rouge daily. Shrimp poboy was excellent! Seafood gumbo was very flavorful. Will definitely hit this spot up when I visit. Decor needs to be updated and some light jazz music would be great great during lunch.

This place is very good. Yes, the prices may be high for central Louisiana, but you're not going to find a better steak locally. I had the rib eye, and it was delicious! Wine list was decent, though could have been better. Decor is okay but dated. All in all, it's a great meal.

This place is extremely old school in heritage. Enjoyed my Malbec and always love a place that serves wine at room temp and in nice stemware! I had the Chilean sea bass blackened which was delightful! The only negative feedback: the restaurant could definitely improve upon the house salad (Bayou salad) which lacks color and taste.

The food is absolutely fabulous! My kids got one thing, my husband another, and me yet another. We each sampled one another's and we all were in agreement. It was all fantastic! If you enjoy fine dining, with a relaxed atmosphere, great food, and spectacular service this is the place for you.

This is an amazing restaurant across from the Parc England Boutique Hotel. They are owned by the same gentleman who personally greets all his guests. Both are on the grounds of a former Air Force base, off the beaten path, but easy to get to. The restaurant is actually the former Officers Club. The food was outstanding, the service was excellent, including the bartender who personally takes your drink order. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Great lunch; if not on the menu, just ask and they will prepare it for you, Dinner is always great; and love the warmth of the lounge.... So warm and cozy! Service is wonderful! Must try it!

I have not been to an old-school dinner restaurant (formerly dinner clubs when I grew up - similar to many country club atmospheres in which I have dined) in a long time. I grew up with this style of fine dining and miss it - you certainly cannot find it in DC. Full and friendly service and the food is absolutely some of the best I have had (I have lived in Chicago, DC and eaten all over the world). I have to say that this was the highlight of my visit to Alexandria, Louisiana and I would return just for the food and the ambience any time I can in the future. Kudos to the owner for keeping the finesse in fine dining. The staff was also great - well-versed on the menu and had great suggestions - my favorite treat was there steak done in the "steak burns" style - Steak Burns style is when the meat is rolled in cracked black pepper, sauteed in olive oil, topped w/ parsley fried in hot brown butter and sliced chateaubriand style. To die for - thanks for two fantastic meals during my stay :)! 2 Thumbs Up, Sarah Dodge, VP of Government Affairs for the American Wood Council

Quaint, 2 large dinning rooms. One with a bar and tv, another fine dining but both have the same over priced menu. Not gluten free vegetarian friendly, but owner worked with us to create dishes. Close to airport, not much else around. Not worth the money.

Celebrated my birthday here at bistro. Wonderful atmosphere, food, service. And no loud or blaring music! Could actually carry on a great conversation without noise and distractions. Would definitely recommend this restaurant. And by the way, we were actually quite full when we left.

This is a little pricey but it is such an awesome place with awesome food and adult beverages. Mr. Fred is wonderful and greets you at the door. Never say"Just one" to him when he asks "How many?" It's always "Party of one". That was the first lesson learned when I went the first time. The lounge is homey with comfortable chairs and a big screen tv. The food is expensive but well worth it. Presentation is amazing! Bloody Mary's are to die for. And the grits ... You haven't lived until you've had the grits. Never disappointed.

My favorite place in Alexandria to enjoy a nice evening of dinner and drinks :) And a great place to host an event!

A bit pricier than I usually like and small portions, but nice atmosphere and great staff. Great beer, wine and drink selection. The food was very good, but small portions for the price. A nice splurge on occasions.

Who knows what the food tastes like...it's been 2.5 hours waiting for a salad. This is absolutely the worst dining experience I've ever had. For the price point $$ this situation should never occur. Fine dining is an impossible description for this place/-it would necessitate food
