SHUCKS! Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

Stopped in here yesterday after a long drive from New Orleans and BEST CRAWFISH ETOUFFE! It was delicious and much needed after the horrible food I had in the over-priced touristy parts of NOLA. My dad ordered a dozen of their oysters and they were HUGE and he seemed to enjoyed it! Loved my meal and thanks for a good meal on my way back to Austin!

Although Shucks is not near the interstate it is well worth the drive. It sits in the center of Cajan country, and serves authentic Cajan food. The restaurant is surrounded by fields of cane, rice and crawfish ponds. The owner buys all ingredients locally so the food is very fresh. Great attention has been given to spices, flavoring and presentation. For people staying at Palmetto State Park the restaurant is an easy drive.

This might be the best fried shrimp in the entire world! Wonderful! Good crab claws and salad too. Not crazy about the catfish, but that's just personal preference. I love it here so much, it's pretty ridiculous.

Myself and my wife had the pleasure of dining at Shucks while traveling through Louisiana last spring. As a professional chef and CEO of the United States Chef Association I believe I know a little something about Cajun-Creole Cuisine. In my honest opinion, "These Guys are Good". We throughly enjoyed every course including an incredible Bread Pudding......... 5+++ Stars Thank you to our wonderful hosts; David and Susie Bertrand Chef Jimmy Nadell CEO: United States Chef Association

I'm just going to start off by commenting on their Bloody Mary's! They. Are. Amazing! And the food is just as amazing. I've never been a big fan of oysters but shucks has changed my mind about that.

Best crawfish étouffée ever. People are very nice. Atmosphere is casual. Lunch crowd is busy. Great place.

I have to admit that I drove about 40 minutes to meet up with my extended family at Shucks. Was it worth it? Yes ---very much so! I like the unassuming attitude that Shucks has which can best be described as - casual dining. When I showed up around 6:30 there was a bit of a wait although luckily my family had gotten a table already. Show up early! For appetizers, we had the fried catfish, crawfish and little shrimp. They were really fresh and crunchy. You must order the oysters on the half shell if you are into those things. There's a shucking room in the back where you can watch the shuckers. For my entrée, I got the grilled seafood combo. The catfish was amazing - so tender and flavorful. I would however skip the shrimp and oysters. I was expecting large oysters like the appetizer but was disappointed after I ate the first few and the bowl was filled with baby oysters that were dripping in sauce/blackened. The bread pudding was good but nothing mind blowing. A little on the small side. Lastly, service was fine for how packed the place was. Waitress forgot my bread pudding in the end but brought it after we reminded her. A great place to visit if you are ever in Abbeville.

Now this was worth a few miles drive to get to, and it couldn't be easier to find. Right where the highway from Lafayette dumps you in the middle of town, there it is, right in front of you. I'm not an oyster fan, so I had the crab cake - just loaded with rich crab - and the fried shrimp, which were as good as the menu said. Big meaty shrimp, with a truly light batter which enhanced and never overpowered the shrimp. That being the case, what was wrong with the onion rings? Those, the batter did overpower the onion inside, and the onion itself was frequently stringy (from the part of the onion that's starting to turn into the skin). But the crab cake and shrimp were good enough to ignore that.

  • Charles J.

The staff was friendly and we were seated quickly. The seafood salad was great, the fried oysters lacked flavor and the crab cakes were filled with small crab shells. If you are coming from out of town it is not worth the drive. There are much better places along the way and Lafayette has many better selections. If you are going through Abbeville then try Dupuy's.

The wait and packed house proves just how mouthwatering good this place is! All of their versions of charbroiled oysters are right on point. Do yourself a favor and get the sampler so you can try them all out. I haven't tasted a bad dish yet and we have driven 45 minutes to get here from our hometown for many years!

    (5)
  • Myles J.

Seafood pasta and soup/gumbos are delicious! Fried shrimp is also very good but the rest of the seafood platter was just OK... including the catfish, patties, and stuffed crab (which is usually one of my favorite--too bready and not enough salt)... and they didn't give us any dressing with our salads (to-go order). I'd come back to try the chargrilled oysters but will likely go somewhere else if/when we visit otherwise.

If you live in Lafayette, do yourself a favor: drive to Abbeville and have dinner at Shucks! Their fried seafood is unimaginably delicious! And you definitely have to try the char-broiled oysters. A sampler platter is the best idea because you get to try each one of the scrumptious variations. Although you might have to wait for a table, the service is friendly and helpful. The owner/manager always makes the rounds of the tables and seems to be a great guy. My whole family loves this place!

    (4)
  • Marc R.

One word: oysters. Specifically, charbroiled. They were like perfectly cooked miniature steaks - a festival of flavor in our mouths.

    (4)
  • Luke H.

Fried Seafood. Raw and Fried Oysters. The Cajun's love this place...almost all locals. Watch the guy's in the back shuck 'em. Would be cheaper, but you can't help but ordering too much.

I live here in Abbeville, and I don't do lots of reviews but I have to tell people about this one. First, living in the middle of Cajun country sets a high bar for good restaurant reviews. I've been coming to Shucks on and off over the years and the food is simply the best value even if I had to drive an hour, which I don't. I live only about a mile away. The sampler roasted oyster platter is a must for first timers here. If you're just a couple, you may want instead to get the traditional roasted version so you can leave room for a cup of seafood gumbo appetizer. For entree, I like the 1/2 &1/2, fried shrimp/fried oysters, but a seafood platter should be plenty large for a couple to split after roasted oysters and gumbo appetizers. The prices are very reasonable, and you have to get here early on weekends, cause there WILL be a line. Just go to the bar, leave your name and grab your favorite beverages while you wait and listen to lots of local cajun chatter. Oh, and while you wait on your order, do yourself a favor and pour a few drops of the "Cajun Power" garlic sauce onto your crackers set out on a napkin. Kind of like a free appetizer, enjoy.

I LOVE Shuck's!!! Awesome cajun food. Love the Shuckafella. Shuck's is catering my wedding reception and I am so excited because their food is amazing! David and Bert are so sweet.

We ate there back in December, on our way to Texas. We had crawfish etouffee and fried catfish if I remember correctly. Definitely wasn't anything special and we won't return when we go back to Abbeville next week.

Had lunch there today and I was a little dissappointed. The place was fairly crowded, but not that bad. The staff was very friendly, but my server was just not very good. Hostess took my drink order and left a menu. Drink arrived and shortly after, the waitress took my order. She then brought me a salad, and then shortly after that, my order. Then things took a turn for the worse. The food was Ok.. That is just the best way to describe it.. At 16.95 for crawfish half and half, it is not a good buy.. I have had much larger portions, from other places, at a cheaper price. Plus the quality was not there..It was just Ok... Then the waitress pulled a dissappearing act. Once she brought my food, I never saw her again.. My water ran, out and I had to wait a very long time, to even get a check. Chacnes are, she is part of this new waitress policy thing, that allows servers to take a smoke break, when they have customers. I see them all the time standing outside the back door during busy hours. if that is so, it is horrible policy.. But something happened to her.. She was not in the dining room.. Anyways, she finally came and I left, and will probably not be back.. I think if I am in Abbeville for lunch again, I would rather try another place than to go back here.. It just wasnt impressive at all.

My family has been going to Shucks for over 20 years. This is THE place for oysters in the area...hands down. During a recent visit home, we had an oyster blowout at Shucks like no other. Raw oysters, candied oysters, roughneck oysters (these were new and DELISH - charbroiled w/ cream cheese, jalapenos, and bacon!), seafood gumbo (simply the best), and fried oysters...my head is still spinning from the greatness of that meal. I am an oyster fiend, and their fried oysters just cannot be beat! We finished our meal with the bread pudding (they can split it for you in the back b/c it's a BIG portion), and I suggest you get that too. The owner may be the friendliest person ever and stopped by to ensure we were having a wonderful meal. He said the bread pudding is a 60+ year old recipe...it was perfect! Lafayette people, make the drive to Abbeville for the best oyster dinner you'll ever have! It's absolutely worth it.

Seafood is so awesome. I had the specialty seafood stuffed flounder. Unreal. The grilled oysters appetizer was spot on. The bread pudding for dessert was as good as it gets. I want one in South Florida. Crazy good.

I must have sampled everything !! I'm so fat and happy I could lay down and die happy by the front door ... But there is a line around the building and its 6 pm on a Friday night ! Back to Maryland in the am ... The candied oysters !!! I know that sounds odd but they are great ! Stuffed crab ! Yes yes ! But wait ... The bread pudding, hands down, you got to get it !

Decided to take the scenic route from New Orleans to Houston and stopped here for lunch. The traditional charbroiled oysters were amazing! Little bit of garlic butter with Parmesan cheese, so delicious! I had the the fried catfish basket, which was seasoned so well no condiments were needed. The staff were super friendly and we really enjoyed ourselves. Now back on the road. :)

We had a little bit of everything from the gumbo, gator bites, oyster's on a half shell to start it off. The Poboy was amazing and the fried seafood platter was great. We finished off with the amazing bread pudding and cheesecake. This place is worth a weekend drive. I would come back to the area just to eat here. I loved everything about. The food and service is top notch.

OMGoosh !!! Friends took me here and HOLY Hell !!! Amazing !!! Raw Oysters, Gator Bites, and the Candied Oysters !!! Truly amazing food !!! Can't wait for the next time I return to Lafayette, shucks will be a return visit !!!

As a native Louisianian, I know good seafood. Recently, my wife and I stopped at Shucks for lunch while we were staying at Palmetto Island State Park. Hands down the oyster sampler platter had some of the best oysters I have ever tasted, (and I have eaten a lot of them!). We will definitely be heading back there when we are in the vicinity.

  • Federico S.

looks like we haven t learned our lesson, just order the raw oysters, raw oysters, raw oysters, as many as you want, as many as you can, by the dozens, by the hundreds... and forget about everything else. oysters 5 stars, everything else 2 stars, service (the girls) delightful. bloody mary at $3 and change (on saturday) doesn t need any scrutiny and should change it s name to bloody merry

Everything was completely amazing. However you order them, the oysters are the best. The staff and owners were all very friendly. The sides are all excellent.

As good as it gets, great food, great staff. We ate everything i think. Oyster Stew is not to be missed. Lots of kids in our party and we all felt attended to and staff were exceptionally nice to the kids. Highly recommend.

My mom (originally from Kaplan) and I are here from Virginia visiting family. We drove by Shucks!, and she mentioned having great memories from her childhood there. I couldn't pass it up! I had the Smoked Duck and Andouille Gumbo, and it was outstanding! Their roux is the stuff of dreams! I also had the Pan Broiled Shrimp, while my mother enjoyed the 1/2 oyster-1/2 shrimp po boy. My mouth was watering just looking at it! This restaurant gets 5 stars from this Navy brat/Virginian. If ever back, I'll definitely stop by again.

  • Buba G.

Good food, roomy. I been about 4 times, the fried alligator is tasty and the seafood pasta is excellent. Its not a place for healthy food. If you looking for rich comfort southern cuisine Shuck is the best.

  • Nate S.

We ordered the stuffed flounder and it was incredible. We had a slight bobble with sides, but they rushed and fixed it with no problems. For dessert we ordered bread pudding and may i say, it was one of the best desserts I've had the pleasure of eating. You would be amiss not to order it!

  • Katie B.

BEST RAW OYSTERS AROUND....not to mention all of the other amazing foods. Favorite appetizer is the Sassy Shrimp and Alligator Bites. Corn and Crab Bisque was to die for. Charbroiled oysters are as good as any in New Orleans. Owner is so sweet and attentive. Hard to get good service that that these days. And make sure you leave room for the Bread Pudding with White Chocolate Rum Sauce. Since this could be challenging, since the food is so amazing, do your self a favor and get it to go, so that you can enjoy a warm bowl of it in your PJs when you get home. AMAZING!!!

One of the benefits of my job is that I get paid to travel the "backroads". By backroads, I mean the non-Interstates. These are the roads that carry people and goods from small towns across America. I have been coming to the Kaplan & Delcambe areas for over half-a-decade and I am actually butt-hurt that our partners-customers have never taken me. This is Oyster Heaven; and by that I mean the place where fresh, big, raw oysters died in my belly. The oyster boats come up the waterway from the Gulf and drop off baskets of oysters almost as fast as the workers here can sort them and shuck only the best. Yes, you read that right: they actually send the inferior oysters off to places like DFW (where I live) and they only serve the best here. If it tells you anything, I ordered a dozen raw for an appetizer, THEN I had another ten charbroiled oysters aka "the Sampler" as an entree. Yum! The only way my meal would have been better is if it was not lunch (or if we could drank during lunch! :)

  • Viv H.

I know people love this place but I was surprised to get my "traditional oysters," which were huge and would have been great if served otherwise, smothered in hot butter and cheese. I like my oysters chilled and served with some garlic and lime so to cook them like that completely masked and totally killed their flavor. My daughter's sandwich was smothered in mayo and my husband's salad was pretty mediocre. The bread pudding was ok but too dense for my taste. The service was not great either. This place was a big disappointment!

  • Chad G.

I've been here several times since moving to Abbeville and it's my go to restaurant when friends visit. Always good food and service. I've had all the flavors of char-broiled oysters and they are all great. The raw oysters are amazing too. I've tried several menu items and all are good. However, my favorite is the oyster sampler and a shrimp po-boy or the duck gumbo. Yummmmmm. They also have a full bar and fine selection of tap beers. Tuesday is also $2 margarita night.

We were here on a Saturday afternoon, and the joint was packed. As busy as it was , the waitresses were really jumpin' but still friendly. Loved my oyster po- boy and homemade potato salad. And the bread pudding (homemade rum sauce) was really yummy. The corn-crab chowder was also great.

Outstanding seafood platter. I have had many in my lifetime and this is worth the trip. Even the onion rings were extraordinary. Frying is done well here.

Thanks for the great Cajun hospitality to those of us that grew up in Lafayette and have had Cajun food many times. Everything we had, we enjoyed very much. The owner came out and visited with us which was a nice touch. I would recommend this restaurant. None of us had oysters on the half shell which seems to be a specialty. We would come back here for good food. Thanks.

Always great! We drive out of our way on vacation to eat at Shucks and have yet to be disappointed. Try the fried shrimp, the oyster sampler, and the alligator.

Need to give Shucks in Abbeville some love. As unpretentious as they get, with delicious South Louisiana fare. I'm not from here, so maybe my palette isn't as refined as some, but I come to this area once a year for work, and we always make a stop at Shucks. The sassy shrimp (in the appetizers section) could be a meal on their own. It's been 2 days and I still can't stop thinking about them. I've had several entrees here, and never been disappointed. You won't be either, so long as you like seafood. If you need recommendations, the owner will be present (or at least, he's always been there when we've been there) and is happy to give suggestions, as well as tell you about the tender lovin care that goes into their jambalaya and crab cakes. Finally, order the bread pudding. I love it, everyone else I've been here with loves it, and a team member from South Louisiana (so you know he knows his bread pudding) loves it too. All love Shucks, I'll be back next time I'm in these parts!

it was a Monday evening. The service could not have been worse. The waitress seemed to know little about her menu and people arriving after us were served before us in her section and out of her section. The food was cold and there is nothing worse than cold roasted oysters or fried soft shell crab. The wine was warm-nothing worse than warm white wine. The bill was over $100 for 3 people. The entree's were priced for a fine dining experience, but the presentation was far from that. Paper napkins rolled around flimsy flatware with wait staff who were stressed, inexperienced and not very grateful for our patience or patronage. We will never eat there again.

Two words...Oyster's Shuckafella. They are simply amazing! You know that flavor you get from a perfect bite of grilled rib-eye? Yeah...it's in there. Drove from Houston by way of Lake Charles. Half shell Oysters also great, as is their Sassy Shrimp w/Sugar cane pepper glaze...YUM! Go there...it's really good. If you don't want to wait, arrive before 5pm...or wait until 8pm. Great bar, great staff!!

I had the best meal I have ever eaten in the USA in this place. The manager is really friendly and takes the time to take you through his menu. The quality of the food is outstanding and would highly recommend the grilled oysters and the gumbo. We were blown away by how good the food was and how friendly all the staff are in this place. If you are in Louisiana, you need to visit this restaurant as it's just so good. My husband and I are still talking about the lunch we had yesterday. He's a pretty tough customer being French but he told me last night that it was the best meal he's eaten in Louisiana so far and we've eaten in a lot of places in Louisiana.

Great cajun seafood and really great service from a genuinely friendly waitress! The Oyster Supreme was super. It is on the shell oyster with shrimp, crab and and sauce baked with bread crumb topping. Absolutely delicious. The flat iron steak was juicy and flavorful, with perfectly grilled vegetable medley. Go early in the evening before the huge crowd arrives to avoid waiting.

We stopped here for lunch while exploring the back roads of Cajun country in Louisiana. We could not have been more pleased. The atmosphere was just what we had hoped for-relaxed and local. The food was terrific. We ordered panbroiled shrimp and crawfish étouffée- the étouffée was the best we have had. The owner, a very friendly guy, brought us a couple of fried shrimp that were fantastic, including one with a sugarcane pepper sauce that is very tasty and filled us in on the history of the restaurant. Wish we could get back here soon but being from Oakland, CA,it might be awhile. Highly recommended.

Fantastic food, amazing oysters, friendly service. This restaurant might be the only reason I come back to abbeville. Caveat: make sure they bring you the correct side order. They messed mine up twice.

Hey all... We are foodies from Chicago that have used yelp for years to track down great restaurants away and occasionally at home. This is the first time that we have been so blown away that we were motivated to write our first review. This. is. incredible Cajun food. The absolutely best oysters we have ever eaten. Not just raw on the half-shell, but in every way beyond imagine taking advantage of the incredible depth of flavor from a large fresh oyster. Candied, char-broiled, 'supreme', 'shuck-afella', the list goes on and is kinda cheesy, but the flavors are all incredibly complex, balanced, and fresh Cajun from a local family that has been here for a hundred years or more and didn't start speaking english until the current generation. The pan-fried oysters taste like what escargot has always wanted to be, and combined with steak... OMG By the way, it's not all about the oysters... Best etouffe we have ever tasted (mother's recipe) and we have been told by the owner, David, that they have an amazing bread pudding that we are about to try shortly. (we discovered this place last night and came back today for lunch) Well worth the half-day trip from the interstate and if you make it, tell Cajun David that the boys from Chicago sent you...

Seafood salad! Oysters on the half-shell! Gumbo! Shrimp and Oyster po-boy! It was all scrumptulescent! We shared this food amongst four people and nothing was left on the table. If you don't like fried food GET the seafood salad. EPIC. Simple grilled oysters, crawfish, and shrimp in a heaping pile atop lettuce and tomatoes. No dressing necessary. The drive out there from New Orleans was even delicious...bayou back roads, red rivers and creeks, small lift bridges and then this sweet little town, with one of the best seafood restaurants I have ever been to. The staff was very sweet.

This is another do not miss in Abbeville. Excellent service and food..... all fresh and amazing flavors. Fresh oysters....raw or cooked about any way you can imagine....Excellent shrimp.....Try the stacker...We were there with 18 other people in our party on Saturday evening(had reservations). Suggest you make reservations.....or expect a wait, but worth it!

I go to Louisiana at least once a year to visit family and they are all in the restaurant business. They live in Iberia Parish and this is the only place they go for oysters. I love it. I know there are different types and flavor profiles of different oysters, but I'm not an oyster snob in fact I'm an oyster whore and these are huge even in the off season (the months that don't have r in it). They call their po' boys "loaves" here. The oyster loaf and fried shrimp loaf are fried perfectly and are delicious. The gator bites are different from what I'm used to but they are fried and a little chewy but very good with a little hot sauce. Oh and don't forget the gumbo that's peppery spicy and has sausage and lots of nice fresh seafood and white rice. I look forward to it every time.
